2022 Buyers Guide for Small Tractors

whether you are purchasing a tractor for the first time looking to trade your old tractor in for a new one or just looking to add a small tractor onto your property i'm going to give you helpful tips that will make your buying experience a lot less confusing number one dealerships the number one most important aspect of your purchase is the dealership you purchased through here's some questions you can ask to spot a reliable dealership does the dealership provide service repair and parts for the tractors they carry does the salesperson understand the product they are selling are the people at the dealership friendly is the dealership willing to let you take a test ride or do a demo will the dealership demonstrate the capabilities of the tractor to you if all of these questions can be answered with a yes then you probably have found a quality dealership number two warranties warranties advertised by tractor companies are almost always powertrain warranties meaning the warranty will cover the engine transmission and other parts that will help power the tractor however all tractors come with other warranties as well namely attachment and manufacturer warranties attachment warranties cover things like the front end loader and bucket if the tractor comes with one manufacturer warranties cover the entire tractor for certain accidents and damages also some tractor companies like john deere will allow you to purchase extended warranty plans the typical powertrain warranty on tractors is about five years the tractor with the best warranty is yanmar since they provide a 10-year powertrain warranty for no extra cost to the consumer number three sub-compact compact and mid-size small tractors are categorized into three brackets you have sub compact compact and mid size as long as you are purchasing a tractor under 100 horsepower it's considered a smaller size tractor mid-size tractors typically range between 60 horsepower and 100 horsepower compact tractors range between 30 horsepower and 60 horsepower and sub-compact tractors are typically between 18 and 30 horsepower however horsepower isn't the only difference as you move up in category you will also move up in tire size ground clearance frame size and lifting capabilities many homeowners with 5 to 15 acres can rely on a sub-compact tractor for most of their needs around the homestead subcompact tractors also usually come with a mid-mount pto giving you the option to add a belly mower underneath the tractor number four diesel particulate filters nearly all tractors in the us that are 30 horsepower and above feature a diesel particulate filter better known as a regen system this is important to take into consideration if you can't decide between a subcompact or compact tractor most sub compacts won't have a regen system saving you money and in most cases removing a need for a computer module tractors above 30 horsepower will have both a regen system and a computer module so if you are the type of person who can work on a tractor yourself choosing a tractor under 30 horsepower is a great choice because it allows you to work on that tractor without having to worry about system checks or upgrades now the only tractor that you can get that's over 35 horsepower without a regen system is the solus tractor so check that out if you're interested number five is transmission types in the past the most commonly used transmission on small tractors was the gear drive transmission the gear drive transmission is usually the most affordable option and allows for maximum performance to the pto however they are cumbersome to operate since they use a clutch and gearbox now hydrostatic transmissions are the most popular type of transmission that come on many sub compact and compact tractors today hydrostatic transmissions use no gearbox and shifting and instead have a dual pedal system allowing the operator to more easily maneuver and drive the tractor these transmissions make loader work easier and many times they also come with features like cruise control now what about the power shuttle shift transmission well the power shuttle shift transmissions are another common transmission that you'll find on small tractors a power shuttle shift transmission combines electronic controls with hydraulic clutch packs allowing the operator to seamlessly transition from forward to reverse while these are typically more expensive than your traditional gear drive transmission they can offer improved reliability and are often easier to maneuver now there are more advanced transmissions as well like the cvt continuous variable transmission which are the most reliable and powerful and easy to operate however they are difficult to come across and can be expensive if you are looking for a tractor with this type of a transmission check out the yt-347 and yt-359 by yanmar it's time for me to move on now to the next thing however i'll have a link in the description below where you can find out more about transmissions for your tractor number six standard features if you want four wheel drive a rear differential lock cruise control a front end loader with ergonomic joystick positioning or a hydrostatic transmission on your tractor make sure to find out if the tractor you are looking at purchasing comes with those features because if it doesn't you could end up spending thousands of dollars extra to get those things added on all tractor manufacturers have different standard features so make sure you have a good idea of what you need before you go to the dealership so that you can get the tractor that is right for you number seven manual hydraulic and pto powered attachments you should never blow all of your budget on the tractor alone because attachments for your tractor are just as important and can be extremely costly attachments for your tractor can require no energy source like a box blade or hayspear these attachments are usually less expensive than ones that run off the pto or hydraulics the attachments that are powered by the pto or hydraulics are usually more expensive because they have moving parts and they're specific to their application and they're extremely effective as well here's a list of attachments you can get for your tractor that are powered by the pto and here's a list of attachments you can get that are powered by the hydraulics of your tractor take a good look at both of these lists so that you can get a good idea of which attachments seem right for you now i have to mention that many of the hydraulic powered attachments will require you to have a certain amount of hydraulic lines to connect to and you will likely have to purchase additional hydraulic lines to use these extremely useful attachments give your dealer a call tell them what attachments you want to run and they will tell you which tractors you can run those implements on number eight attachment style putting on and taking off attachments for your tractor can be extremely difficult to do especially on the back of your tractor where the three point is thankfully there are solutions for that you can get a quick hitch or a jiffy hitch which i just came out with a video on these will allow you to easily connect quick hitch compatible attachments like box blades road graders rotary cutters tillers and more but it doesn't stop there let's say you don't want to do any manual labor to get attachments on and off the back of your tractor well like i said before the jiffy hitch is an advanced three-point quick hitch system that will allow you to put on nearly all attachments including ones with a pto shaft from the comfort of your seat similarly many of the front loaders that come with tractors today feature a quick disconnect loader this will allow you to attach and detach the entire loader quickly and with little effort the implements that attach to the loader like the bucket also have their own attachment style the most common is the universal skid steer style quick attach however many sub-compact tractors come with a pen style quick attach as well now you can still find a wide variety of pin style quick attachments they just aren't as common as the universal style also john deere has their own patented quick attach for their loader so you're stuck buying john deere's own attachments which cost more money for the same performance number nine cab versus non-cab cabs are extremely expensive and typically found on compact tractors and up you will have a very hard time finding a sub-compact cab tractor however depending on where you are located a cab might be the best option in my opinion if you can afford a cab they are well worth the extra cost okay because tractor bobs is a dealership i'm not going to sit here and tell you to purchase one brand of tractor over another but i will say this myanmar tractors are without a doubt one of the most reliable tractors on the market today and are almost always less expensive than comparable quality tractors like kubota and john deere so just keep that in mind when you're looking for a dealership near you thanks for
