national championship live coverage today on racertv.com is brought to you in part by motorcycle mechanics institute i'm rodney tomlin along with landon wolfe to give you the call and you know throughout the years we've seen amazing battles and back to back championship sweeps by many different athletes and coming off a win in 2019 is caleb russell we had a chance to catch up with him coming into this opening round and after seven straight championships it's a little weird knowing that this is uh the last start to my professional career and you know i'm kind of shutting the door on myself behind me but no it's good i really enjoy this place and uh it's been pretty wet up this way so this place is usually when we come here and race it's usually dry and hard packed and dusty so we'll get a little bit of you know one last my last time around it'll be uh probably some of the best conditions i will have ever had here so i'm looking forward to the race and looking forward to the weekend and looking forward to just starting the year and getting it uh you know underway it's it's a long season and it goes by really fast and you know the last 10 years have gone by on a blur and i'm sure this one's going to be no different you know you you know we uh we're standing here today and it's the next thing i know i'm going to be turning around and uh we're going to be leaving iron junior trail boss jared bolton to give us an overview of what this weekend's track's like [Music] thanks guys well it's time to kick off the 2020 gncc racing season and what better place to do that than big buck it's been a tough week everybody's been wondering about the weather it's been raining on and off it's been a little wet but guess what the woods are actually really awesome there's been so much pine needle and leaf cover out there that really the rain has never got all the way to the dirt dirt's been really hard packed so what rain did get to us really ran off we could see some epic dirt this weekend on an epic course this course is really good we've got a super long track this weekend we've added a few more miles of what we normally do there's something for everyone out there and i know what you guys are thinking you're already kicking off this year saying the same thing you say every race but that holds true at big buck there's fast stuff there's grass track there's tight bike only sections there truly is something for everyone at the big buck and that's why so many people love to come out and go racing here thanks jared now let's get a word from our sponsors and we'll up and of course the announcement of caleb russell in his final season as he will call it a retirement at the end of 2020 however he wants to win one more championship but there are several guys on this starting line that want to dethrone him including thad duvall including stu baylor including josh strang also the 127 at jordan ashburn and everyone on this line wants a piece of that first place action the big question is will they be able to take caleb russell down in his final season well i'll tell you right now caleb russell's coming and he's ready for the gun and my friends he is certainly poised and ready for the attack that is about to come his way because he knows in announcing that retirement so many folks are going to want so much more one minute folks one minute as ricky towery lets these riders know that we are one minute away from getting things off and rolling here at the vp fuels big buck tncc the next time ricky towery gives these riders a cue it'll be the waving of the blue flag which will be a dead engine call and it will also signal 30 seconds for the start of this race all eyes bearing down on ricky now as they begin to tighten and of course staring down that start line like staring down the barrel of a gun the blue flags are out we're less than 30 seconds and shut them down shut them down shut them down and with that i gotta ask you south carolina [Music] welcome back to gncc live on racertv.com i'm rodney tom along with landon wolfe and alicia mccormick as well as we bring to you the coverage of the opening round of 2020. 46 years we've been at this and wow i'll tell you each and every year it gets special something special about this year there are a few changes there in that xc1 pro pits had uh had a pretty tremendous year last year and won a lot of races and was really consistent and it helps a lot you know it just gives you confidence and and you know you belong up front but um yeah every every start of the year is always kind of a weird unsettling feeling you know uh just unknown you don't know how everyone's gonna stack up and uh but i'm i'm confident in myself and uh in the training i've been putting in and yeah just just doing all the work it uh it gives you confidence and it makes you feel good and uh yeah i'm just gonna go out there and ride like i know how and and not worry about too much and just see how it goes from there and taking one race at a time yeah this year here at big buck it's it's nothing like we've ever seen here before i don't i don't think um you know in the past we've always raced here in the in the summer time you know it's always dry um yeah we'll get two months here without rain in the summer so it's always dry and dusty here and uh this year the soil ended up being perfect it rained all week and then you know it's been good the last couple days so it's it couldn't be better and you know the spots are usually a little bit soft or a good bit softer this year with all the extra rain so you know that's going to make it pretty interesting but uh all in all i think it's going to be a great day how's it going guys stuart baylor here round one gncc's big buck obviously not far from the from the house and we're looking forward to it new team so different colors than anybody's ever seen me on because i've only been on one color my whole life so you know i'm looking forward to it to see what we can do and obviously gmcc is a whole whole different beast so you know with that being said i'm looking forward to it and hopefully we can mix it up with the best today and maybe put caleb and thad behind me and put a little gap on them that would that would sure be nice so we'll see how everything goes and you know i'm just looking forward to highlighting these bikes and seeing what we can really do with them at a gncc live coverage of the 2020 gncc series on racertv.com is brought to you by mmi get there faster smarter specialized specialized turbo e-bikes it's youth only faster and by rocky rockymountainatvmc.com get ready ricky russell so both brussels there is looks to be lane michael these guys are well into the first lap there is andrew delong josh uh these guys are headed up and it's making short work in this uh this hill so right as we open up right to action we're joined here in the booth by tyler shepherdson tyler uh we're uh we're dialed in here we've got to see the start we saw that caleb russell with a massive hole shot in this xc1 class there is stu baylor the 514 now here's weird scherko machine after his entire career on ktm you know those of you at home watching that saw those interviews coming in a lot of changes in the soft season and now that was one of them right there but the hype is real this year man yeah absolutely just as you mentioned a lot of story lines coming into 2020 as we kick off the the season one here at the vp fuels racing big buck gncc now as you mentioned stu and grant baylor where here goes little brother grant going to uh the hill climb right here but obviously them making that move to the factory sureco machine we got ricky russell switching over to the coastal racing husqvarna team lane michael is now on that ampro storyline going into this is this is going to be caleb russell's last first race yeah absolutely you know and caleb russell's been a staple in this series for many many years so for him to uh make the announcement just a few short weeks before the season opener that this would be his last season a full-time competition that was a bombshell dropped on the fans uh you know obviously it's something his team was aware of we're seeing xc2 work their way through we saw mike watkowski the 282 another riders change teams there now to the factory uh yamaha nfab and pro team uh new to that team after several years with the factory beta squad so here comes your xc2 guys can't make out the numbers on all these guys but man they are just wheel to wheel battling and always an exciting class to watch that xc2 but um yeah you know so many changes in the soft season so folks at home you know a lot of different colors a lot of different numbers a lot of new riders uh joining our top xc1 and xc2 classes so it's going to be an exciting day and we're going to fill you in as it goes and as all the action unfolds but uh as we saw on screen right when we came back from commercial break there after our starts caleb russell still appearing to be leading there uh ricky russell in second and uh you know just a lot of battling and action going on up front in that xc1 class caleb russell grabbing the whole shot there i believe uh it was another writer who grabbed the whole shot in xc2 but mike witkowski made short work of him and had the lead as soon as they went into the woods pretty much immediately so so many things going on um so many story lines to follow and think about it folks this is just round one of 13. the hype is just getting started but for 2020 the hype is very real yeah we saw a couple red bikes coming through in the in the front of that xc2 class as well as they make their way up the hill climb here uh jonathan johnson i know he got a decent start i don't know if one of those was him up front we also got cody barnes on that beta so a couple of red bikes that we notice as we take a fly over here down our pro rose this uh presented to us by vp fuel so awesome to to see and finally be here finally be here at round one kicking things off we missed last year at big buck uh this year we didn't get rained out it actually came out to be perfect as we uh switch over here looks like these are these are some riders further back i thought we were getting a shot of our leaders but uh this is actually back quite a ways back from where we were just watching them at the at the uh fmf hill climb there but uh yeah no i mean that uh a lot of hype coming into this weekend a lot of people pumped up for the race and then of course there's always those naysayers that uh think that it's gonna be too bad there's gonna be too much rain it's gonna be too muddy but apparently they've never been to the big buck property because this place could take just inches and inches and inches of rain and minutes later the track could be really good and uh never had any doubts about the track coming in a lot of concerns last year revolved around the parking that's what had to happen for the cancellation just weren't able to get the big rigs in and out um but as you said 24 years uh first year racing here was 1997. and uh this is a shot of the fmf powerpoint this is the creek jump up and over the famous big buck creek down here at henry turner's big buck facility and it looks like we've got our leaders coming tyler yeah absolutely looking like he's making his way over and those are actually looks like our leaders have already been by here as we see the white number plate so this is some of our a class riders making their way over the creek but johnny you raced yesterday and you've been racing here since big buck has been around have you ever seen better dirt at the big bug farm than what we're seeing today no uh without a question of a doubt i mean that's kind of what i was getting at there was a lot of the chatter um coming in to the last two weeks was you know the forecast was calling for rain um it was just rain on top of rain the cold temperatures everybody's saying you know we need to cancel this we you know we can't we can't have this we can't ruin our rig we can't run our machines and uh you know i was pretty adamant about the fact that uh based on the weather forecast i saw we were gonna have perfect dirt and great racing conditions and man i'm glad i turned out to be right um you know the dirt literally as you can see there in that shot could not be any better these bikes are not at all muddy there's a ton of grip in this big buck soil and uh it's just provided for great racing we saw yesterday in the atvs we've seen it throughout the youth races throughout the weekend and we saw it again this morning in the 10 a.m race so the racing action has been fast it's been furious the grip in the track has been amazing uh the track is held together better probably than it ever has when it's dry and dusty it's we're not getting those chuck holes so it's what it's doing is it's allowing more riders to kind of stay in battle for those those top positions and it's uh yeah it's just great racing great conditions and i i don't think we could have scripted it any better than what we're looking at here on screen no i think you're absolutely right and actually got the opportunity to jump on an e-bike and cruise around the track yesterday with xc2 pro trevor barrett so got to see the track first hand and one thing that i also noticed about this track it seems like this year big buck we could see the most lines opening up and developing throughout the race as well a lot of different lines a lot of open sections and taking that year off to heal i think really for the land to uh develop into what we're racing on today so i think that's going to be a key to the race is really staying off the the main lines and and finding a shorter way around the track yeah absolutely no question i mean if you uh if you look at this course and and the woods and the condition that they're in you know giving this place one one year off was just what the doctor ordered um you know obviously the the gncc crew does a phenomenal job of reclaiming these racetracks uh to allow mother nature to take its course and you know put some leave betting down and they even plant grass in the open areas to kind of knead the soil back together but uh you know this year having the one extra year off obviously we're all upset to miss big buck last year it's a staple in the series um but that extra year has really just brought the most out of this ground and uh again not just the dirt itself um the entire facility has never been in better shape it's just been phenomenal uh there's just been tons and tons and tons of people here throughout the weekend you know the spectators just keep pouring in as you can see from the shot here at the creek jump and uh everybody's everybody's having a great time and um you know to your point about the lines i i think uh you know granted we used to race here a little later it was typically early to mid april um and obviously south carolina springs come a little bit earlier than what we're used to up north or what i'm used to but i think one of the big factors here is there's less vegetation than we're used to seeing here so that's what's opening up those lines oh here we go and this is a no no you do not roll the creek jump uh this creates this creates a real issue here um you know you don't want to roll off into that or you will get stuck trying to go up the other side if you're going for it you got to go for it if you're not going to go for it you got to go around like that guy's finding out right now oh he was he was sideways oh it looks like judging by the crowd's reaction i don't think he landed that um i don't we're gonna they might turn around but you know the arms were up you could see the jaws drop and it was kind of a delayed reaction so i'm guessing that that gentleman sure is okay but i think he might have landed a little bit sideways a little bit topsy turvy i know we're in there and uh looks like they're now pointing people to go wide so i'm thinking he might still be there picking up that machine uh this is always such a great feature here at big buck people love the creek jump um it's uh it's a spectator and fan favorite um it's uh it's just great viewing and you get to see these riders kind of send it over the creek yeah absolutely and johnny i was actually gonna be racing the open b class in this race and this creek jump right here left left me with nightmares last night so not totally uh uh excite or i'm not missing too much by by not riding it i'm much safer up here in the booth but uh just like you said where we saw that guy go up and stop there is no rolling through that i mean it's a straight drop down on one side and the landing is a straight drop up so it's either all or nothing as we see jojo cunningham right there on that kawasaki he was our youth champion last year he made the move up at the last few rounds and did well as far as top amateurs and in that a class so this will be his first full season as we see him hit the creek jump right there looks like no problems for jojo yeah there's uh definitely a lot of riders that uh seeming to second guess their decision when they make that left there and then they take a look at that creek jump and decide ah you know what there's a bypass here i'm going for that and it's not all that much longer it's about uh maybe 10 to 12 seconds to go around there so not huge time made or lost by going around um but you definitely don't want to come up short on that um i saw some skid plate marks in that yesterday so i'm assuming some people came up a little short and i could only imagine that uh that was a pretty rough landing so it sounds like uh as we're looking here we hear some bikes running in the background we're just near where you're looking at this drone shot uh we're actually pretty close to there is our racer tv booth we are just out of camera so we're watching from this drone shot and it looks by the way they're angling the drone we're expecting to see our xc1 leaders pop out of the woods here uh they'll come right between that ampro yamaha rig and the factory fmf red bull ktm rig and those guys are in there they are there is your leader and it looks like it is still the number one fmf red bull ktm of caleb russell hard on the hammer and headed down vp fuels pro row so there's the second place rider it looks like maybe thad duvall will have to uh we'll know soon enough because they're going to be coming right to the finish here in about 30 seconds rodney yeah and i'll tell you that thad duvall got off to a great start there there's no doubt about that uh uh we saw a good start also by lane michael one that anne pro yamaha is some invigor i think he's invigorated ricky russell on his new coastal racing uh uh husqvarna was right there with lane michael those were the top four going into that into the woods section anyway well it'll be interesting to see how this is all sorted out especially with the new life that's been breathed into so many programs and all the changes so far this season yeah speaking of that rodney i mean have we ever seen this many changes from riders and teams and and new sponsors and and just all the hullabaloo and the and the hype coming in the silly season really was and that's the funny thing i i was trying to think the same thing i don't recall ever a year where we've seen as much change across the board as what we've seen and it happened on both the atv and the motorcycle side of things that's the interesting point i think yeah i think like you said i mean clearly i think we have to acknowledge the biggest news in gncc racing uh would have to be the change of stu and grant baylor to that sureco team on the bike side of things for sure um you know those guys have been uh grant obviously did uh did a year or maybe even two years with the emperor yamaha team a few years back right um but stu baylor has been an orange pilot orange bleeder ktm guy since he was on 50s um so for him to make a change go to that blue and yellow and white um he said he just felt like it was the time he wanted to help those guys develop a bike and uh you know this is this is what we're seeing on screen right now now there is caleb russell the number one fmf red bull ktm and hot on his heels i'll tell you what i can't see the number but i'm going to bet that's daddy ball it's either faddival or ricky russell if we can get scoring to refresh there and find out because they did just go through the finish line checkpoint yeah it sounds like we got word coming in that it that is the 989 the rockstar energy husqvarna of thad duvall which when they came through the pro row we saw that pit road or that pit sign coming up from the husqvarna rig but thad missed the last couple rounds last year but no doubt he's been rehabbing and training that knee up coming in strong as he's currently in that second place spot at round number one you know i had a chance to talk with him and uh and like he said you know i say this every year i feel better i feel stronger i feel more on point than i have any year coming into it you know and and though that may sound like a broken record in one sense of the matter you got to think about it i think that he is telling the truth each and every year i think we are seeing advancements out of out of thad dubal each and every time so every time he says i feel better i'm do is we recognize that throughout the season and is racing yeah absolutely and i think that goes across the board for all these guys you know the level raises every year and just to stay the same you have to be better um so to be to be better in comparison you have to be that much better and fad looking really good here so far today uh right hot on the rear wheel of caleb russell um we'll see if we can get uh some timing and scoring up here soon hopefully so we can tell you exactly what our running order is for the top five top ten have they come to the finish line yes they have come through the finish but that was weird just watching them leave the finish line on that camera shot so we're not uh we're not having it uh update here but we'll try uh try and get you guys an update as soon as we can if you're watching at home hopefully your live feed is working there we just saw that live shot of jordan ashburn coming through the woods there as he makes his way into this finish line chicane and we can see that the the green number plates signifying that xc2 class that they've already worked their way up physically so as we got the results here we'll turn it over to rodney and see our run in order well that is caleb russell and ricky russell is who we have checking in in the number two spot on board the number 212. jordan ashburn who had some phenomenal races in the latter half of the season last year on the 127 babitz online team green kawasaki he's running in the number three spot there's lane michael top four position right now as he's running fourth andrew long in fifth josh string in six jonathan garror he's an xc2250 pro rider he's up to seventh place already uh stu baylor is eighth place on his circle ben kelly and ninth and thad duvall all the way back in 10th yeah we've got some bad information there folks that is not thaddeval in second that is ricky russell ricky russell i thought it looked like ricky on the 212 uh coastal racing husqvarna is the rider in in caleb russell's shadow and they have yarded third place jordan ashburn by 25 and a half seconds on lap one and those two are checking out and pulling away at the moment as you said another three seconds back lane michael and another nine seconds back andrew long that rounds out your top five so fedeval was up there off the start but currently ninth and uh looks to be 32-39 uh looks like he is about a minute and uh what a minute and 17 seconds behind the leader so that you know those those improvements you were talking about in the offseason he better put him to work here soon because losing a minute 17 on the first lap does not bode well that's not going to work out well for me also see another surprise to me is ben kelly back in the ninth place position who himself is uh only about 10 seconds ahead of of dad duval so he's got well over a minute that he's got to make up too and and knowing the strength of both of these riders i'm not saying that neither one of them can make it up especially early in the race right now but i think it's odd that two players that we expected to see battling for a win today are all the way back in ninth and tenth place positions yeah and i don't really know um i don't really know how to handle this one with ben because um i've heard some rumors um i don't know what he said in his pre-race interview but as a few days ago um i heard he was not racing um he's he's had a big crash and uh he's dealing with some things i guess it's all hearsay but we'll let him bring us up to speed when he feels like it but ben kelly i can tell you was not anywhere near 100 or even 75 percent or probably even 50 coming into today so maybe he chose not to share that i didn't see the pre-race interviews um but uh yeah he's he's had a big crash early this week and uh he was definitely under the weather physically well let's uh check in with him and see uh check in with the guy see exactly what is uh well what they were thinking coming into this i know we talked to him now it's a chance to hear what they said how's it going i'm ben kelly and here we are at the first round of the 2020 gncc racing season and uh yeah it's my first official rookie season in the xc1 class so excited to get out there and see what i can do had a really good year last year and and moved up early and was able to win the last two races so i definitely have some momentum working in my favor and just going to go out there and try to do the best i can it's the first race it's a long season and uh yeah everyone's chomping at the bit to get out there so just gonna go out there and uh do the best i can yeah i feel pretty solid i uh i'm not 100 kind of had a crash this week and uh yeah i'm not in the place i really want to be but uh we'll see how it goes after tomorrow and uh so just gonna go out there and race it's what i'm what i'm here to do and it's been a long offseason and i've been wanting to go racing so uh yeah just gonna give it a try tomorrow and see what we can do still a lot a lot of details on necessary injuries or anything like that but he did admit to having the crash and not being a hundred percent so like you said johnny i mean that's where we are right now with him and and you got to wonder also with that i know we talked about he had the knee injury at the end of the year and i'd talked to him he said i don't think he was going to have surgery or anything like that on it so like tyler said rehabbing that knee all year you have to wonder if the strength is back in that too because uh that's a pretty nagging injury once you get it yeah it's hard to know for sure and again you know nothing no reason to panic if you're a ben kelly fan or a fad duval fan and those guys seeming to be a little off where we were expecting them on lap one i mean this is a three-hour race folks 180 minutes there's plenty of time for them to get back up in there and and battle for top positions or even get a lead and pull away um you know as as far as ben goes i i i you know i is as bummed as i was to hear that he was injured i'm glad you know that that he's acknowledging it sometimes it's a tough situation for those guys they don't want their competitors to know um but again i knew from from some people that were there at ranch russell he had had a big one um he's been to the doctor they've checked him out he knows exactly what's wrong um they they can share that at their will but um he is not 100 um and and again i think there was a serious discussion as to whether or not he would line up today based on his injuries um or whether he would focus his efforts elsewhere um but it's awesome to see him out there and glad to see him out there doing battle and um it i will say from what i know of it it is something that is overcomeable um we could see him back at 100 very soon-ish um but not not in the short term wow that's a tough break for a kid that's got such a uh such a great future ahead of him there's no doubt about it well right now as we're checking it out we're one lap down working on lap number two about uh 40 minutes into this one now about 37 i guess 38 minutes into this event and of course with that we are looking at i think still a lot of great racing ahead only a couple seconds separating the russells of caleb and ricky and of course another 25 back to jordan ashburn back in third lane michael and fourth and andrew delong in fifth as we wrapped up that first lap we'll be back in just a few moments to pick up the rest of the action to find out what is going to happen here at the season opener ah [Music] inside every yamaha lives pennsylvania and visit our online inventory at www.lojax.com yamaha yz it's why we ride well i got the whole shot and then the first lap i kind of took it easy because it was a little slick and then i and then i jacked jack joy passed me and we were just trying and then he wrecked pretty hard then after that i put my head down and pulled away and the track was really good race this morning i tell you early on in that race a really good battle between a couple of kawasaki's out there but when the checkers finally flew that was some total domination but here we are back here lap number two vp fuels big buck gncc rodney tomlin along with uh tyler shepherdson today and also johnny gallagher our own johnny g here with us and i've got miss spartanburg with us today this is lindsey burl and lindsay comes to us out of uh uh okay so you're you're right in this uh close in this area and everything and of course with that um we uh note that you are miss spartanburg we talked to a miss sparkle city yesterday and that's a little different isn't it sparkle city is one of the official nicknames for spartanburg so i am a spartanburg admin native so born and bred born and bred so you get to represent your hometown then huh absolutely and that's such an amazing thing to do uh spartanburg is a legacy title so if i'm correct i'm the 66th miss spartanburg to represent us at miss south carolina wow so how many miss spartanburgs have made miss south carolina ooh i know about two years ago miss spartanburg was miss south carolina the past miss spartanburg also was second runner-up so spartanburg has a it's a pretty pretty hefty name to hold at the miss south carolina wow you got some big shoes to fill it sounds like when do you go for that that will be in june so an entire week of june in columbia south carolina we will be competing for the title so when they ask you a question tell us miss lindsay about spartanburg what's so great about spartanburg i love spartanburg because the county itself is made up of these small you know towns like inman so spartanburg is extremely special to me and you know it's a community like the racing community that i've grown up with with my dad and my brother racing yeah speak of that a little bit your dad actually a flat tracker and your brother they they track right yep so uh coming in today was extremely nostalgic this is the coolest appearance i have had thus far and i don't think i'll have one cooler for sure i've been texting my father all the photos of the people i've gotten to meet and take pictures with and he is so jealous absolutely that is great and you're also studying broadcasting you're junior right yes sir i'm a junior at winthrop university in rock hill south carolina awesome and what are you thinking about broadcasting i mean here you are how we doing you're doing great i absolutely love it i actually do an internship at levine's children's hospital for the ryan seacrest foundation the crest studios so i'm used to interview uh radio as well so it's awesome that is great that is great lindsay it is such an honor and a treat to have you here and thank you so much anna thrilled you're also going to be on the podium later today yes passing out the awards so uh thank you for being on hand and uh of course anybody here at the racetrack wants to talk you take pictures or whatever absolutely come and find me are you going to be a future miss america yes it will be for the miss america organization so our future miss america i'm going to go ahead and and put it out there put it out there you want to talk to miss future miss america right here she is she'll be milling around the pits but thank you so much tell your dad and your brother to and you guys come over to steel creek and check things out all right absolutely thank you so much all righty that's uh miss lindsey burles again uh uh great talent as far as beauty queen and great talent from the broadcast career i think and and more importantly in my heart she's a moto fan she loves the off-road she loves motorcycle and atv racing so you can't beat that johnny gallagher joining us back in here as we're about 20 minutes or so johnny i think from possibly seeing a completion of lap number two but that's not necessarily the big news right now i think just basically what we're looking at is erin hamrick nice to have you out here my friend all righty mid-east uh guru himself mr bjorn hamrick stopping by the racer tv studios to tell everyone hi johnny back at this one not a chance to keep an eye on what's going on out here on the racetrack right now and of course uh caleb russell ricky russell these guys really going at it and here we go is this a little bit further back here at a little bit further back here sorry i grabbed the wrong mic this actually is our um fmf powerpoint this is our hill climb here and uh this should be the next spot i believe unless i missed him while i was away from the screen here this is where i should see our leaders next wow this uh the crowd down there today is pretty phenomenal right i'll tell you what it was cold this morning and i had my concerns as to how many people were going to brave the elements to come out but come on folks i mean we got to be pushing 60 degrees now and uh glad to see that these folks all came out and made made the trek because there's heavy racing action and uh always great great great crowd here at the big buck henry turner's big buck farm 384 riders in this afternoon's race nearly 400 that's one of the bigger afternoon races we've had in quite some time you know if we get 300 or so in the afternoon we're doing pretty good now seven eight nine hundred a thousand riders in the morning not necessarily a big huge deal i mean it is it's cool sure but uh i think uh nearly 400 in the afternoon like this is that's pretty impressive to me so i'm pretty stoked on that i can't figure out which one can you no i'm on the right one this one just doesn't fit my head right i'm trying to make the adjustments and uh yeah no it's uh when you see that number 385 in the afternoon that is a very very solid number for an afternoon race and awesome to see um i mean absolutely amazing to see like you said a phenomenal crowd here of spectators and also of racers here this weekend i talked to some folks yesterday coming in they said it took them an hour and a half just to get into the gate they sat in line from out on the highway and that wasn't because they were slow it's because that's how backed up they were that's how many people were trying to get into this place yesterday yeah i really i can't say i'm surprised i mean you can see by the spectator areas here i mean this place is just beaming and brimming with people um you know it's great i mean it's uh it really goes to show um you know we talk so much about uh wanting to people get people outside side more and have more outside activities and gncc fill in the void um you know year after year just growing the numbers and uh spectators riders and speaking of the racers here they come the number one fmf ktm of caleb russell jumping down off that bank look at that never touch in the water caleb made some statements and said he was going to come out he was going to set a pace that he didn't think anybody else was going to be able to match well right now only one guy can the 212 of ricky russell and ricky surprise well i won't say surprisingly but ricky russell was walking was working that pace at the end of last year quite often as well so ricky really picking up where he left off and i think the amazing and cool thing about that is is being able to do that on a brand new machine and a brand new ride like that not that there's anything wrong with the machine but just switching brands like that oftentimes can take a little adjustment time under race pace you know you might have practice pacing everything down but man i mean he picked right up on race pace and that's pretty impressive i mean probably as impressive as anything i've seen out of that young rider out of duval washington yeah absolutely i mean you know the fact that he's been able to come out on a new machine new team um and he'd been on that uh you know he had been on that yamaha squad for a couple years there was comfortable on that yz450 um obviously lane michael taking over his spot there but see ricky russell come out on that uh on that coastal racing husqvarna and right up there matching the fastest man on earth in the woods you know that is a statement and uh you know caleb russell trying to get away right now ricky russell not letting him and i believe unless i'm mistaken that was our second place rider or a third place rider jordan ashford now josh strang looks to be up to fourth place unless we missed lane michael obviously the camera panning back and forth there was a rider that came through the shot but judging by the line he took i believe it was a left rider that went around the outside there here we see the 410 phoenix racing honda andrew delong uh wasn't that fifth place spot looks like he needs to be there baylor making up ground on that factory sureco and there goes that worker on the outside that was bad to ball focus and there is ben ben kelly right there wow so there's those guys that's gotten around ben kelly and starting to open up a little bit of a gap there uh how about the other johnny t right there johnny garror he's uh leading the xc2 pro lights class and uh currently running in seventh place overall that's uh pretty impressive we've seen him some in the xc1 class but dipping down in the xc2 he might have found the fit on that 250 man yeah absolutely you know and there was elaine michael coming by so we didn't miss him uh he wasn't fourth looks like he has dropped back now to about a ninth place position and i believe we've got uh we've got tyler shepherdson down in the pits yeah working or speaking on behalf of that new factory sureco team that houses both stu and grant baylor uh tyler you got an update for us down there yeah absolutely so we're down here pitch right now i know you've been wrenching on these machines what all done what all goes into bringing a brand new factory effort out here to the gncc's well a lot of it you know uh gncc's requires a lot of durability and these bikes are going to last so just trying to make everything bulletproof trying to make everything like any issues that they had during practice or testing you know just kind of address all that and make sure that we're uh covering all the bases making sure that the bike's gonna last really good that's the biggest thing you don't know uh a circo has never raced to gmcc in its existence at the level that these guys are racing so you know it really takes a lot of time and effort and uh you know for this first round we we got it together and i think the you know they're running okay right now and if we get through this round and they finish really well we'll uh we'll push forward for more all right good deal and we talked to stu baylor and one thing that stu was adamant about it that the ergonomics and the main things are all the same so he said he's getting pretty comfortable on the bike as well as grant and they both had good showings at the the national enduro and everything so what's the expectations going forward from here you know right now it's just kind of seeing where we stack up against the competition you know everybody always the first round is the biggest biggest push and you know you're wondering is your training right everything right so our expectations are just to come through here and uh and finish solid and then just regroup and then go into florida you know florida's the one round that's nothing like anything else we do so you know if you can last through that now let's go gncc racing after florida and uh and then kind of put it all together for that point further all right well good deal thank you and there you have it straight from the sureco pits one to a team to be watching out for for the rest of the season all right thank you tyler good scoop there from eric's rotten uh former uh last year's phoenix honda team manager prior to that many many years with the jcr honda squad out west as well as several years here in the gncc that man has a lot of experience dialing in motorcycles and making them gncc ready so great move on behalf of uh the factory sureco team and the baylor boys to bring eric sheraton on board he's got a lot of knowledge when it comes to spinning wrenches and making machines exactly what the rider wants and those guys developing a new machine it's going to be a tall order for them but they're young they're driven and they've got a lot of good backing behind them well you know talking with stu baylor earlier today you know he seemed rather hum not humble that's a good way to put it but realistic about how things are going but i almost have to think you know i mean some of the things he said led me to believe that he was already a few steps ahead further on this bike than than kind of what a lot of people might be expecting him as he says there's a lot of the components and things of that bike and ergonomics of the bike that are similar to what he's already used to so uh it's actually fitting his style quite well and he said you know kind of really off mic he said you know he says if i can ride this thing like it feels like i can ride it you know what it feels like whenever i'm riding i should have a good day out there you know but again you don't know until you're at race pace and you got to be proven that race pacing and you know how well the bike's going to handle and how you're going to handle the bike under those conditions yeah absolutely you know and i think uh you know shurco obviously has a phenomenal reputation in hard enduro and and in europe but in some different stores formats and styles of racing you know the bikes are fast the bikes are good oh look at that had a nose wheelie up into the crowd and then wheelied off there to the side folks that is why you do not take the big buck fmf powerpoint he'll climb for granted uh he hit that rock ledge at the top and threw him up on the front wheel and he was just along for the ride after that there's tegan temple the 525 ktm machine these are xc2 riders that were coming seeing through here we did see uh johnny gerard uh mike wikowski a number of riders already come through i saw evan smith 347 machine many of our top players in that xc2 class have already come through on screen jesse ansley the 328 trail jesters ktm all those guys came through while we were chatting there um but yeah with the sureco i think the major question on a lot of industry and players minds is you know the baylor boys are known for not being easy on equipment and how are these machines going to hold up not questioning them based on the fact that they're sure co it's just something different than they've ever ridden before so again we are absolutely pumped to have sureco here fielding a factory team with two top riders in the um the baylor's squared grant and stew and uh you know we're gonna see we're gonna find out today um right now at last check we had stew baylor and eighth i can tell you from our camera shot here at the fmf powerpoint a little higher up than that i think he made his way up to seventh possibly even sixth in the running order and was within striking distance of a couple guys in front of him so i think within another lap or so here we could potentially see stu baylor battling with inside the top five i agree i agree he's not exactly sure where grant is but uh you know i i think if they could get two both these bikes to finish and ideally both of them in the top ten i would i don't know how you feel about it rodney but i would call that a win for the day yeah and i think honestly i think that team sureco would look at it like that i mean you come into a thing like this i mean the idea of winning is kind of a dream whenever you come in now it's not a far-fetched stream because you've got the baylor boys that are there that are manning the machines but at the same time uh you know anything in that top 10 is going to be a great ride anything better than a top 10 like a top five it's gonna be phenomenal so if they can get a top five either one of them get a top five or even get on the podium i think that they'll probably do better than what they anticipated what they expected and i'm sure that the team and the manufacturer is going to be completely stoked in knowing that they were right uh in knowing that it was time to make a move with gncc yeah absolutely you know and we've seen this so many times over the years when you get a uh you know a new company a new manufacturer involved that uh you know they they kind of get their feet wet um usually typically i mean it was a bold move for for sureco to get two high-profile riders like the baylor's you know typically we've seen teams come in and kind of get uh you know some some established maybe some older riders that can help them develop the bike um that maybe aren't quite at the pinnacle of their career um you know but to take two riders who have both won gncc overalls you know and are we know them to be threats for a podium every time they get on their machine uh you know and last year i believe stu if i'm not mistaken was the third overall finisher third or fourth overall finisher for the season um in points so you know that that's definitely top tier talent there so kudos to them for coming out swinging in a big way and i definitely hope it pays off for them we're looking here at vp fuels pro row from our skycam this is a drone shot here no we don't have a helicopter we've got one better we got a drone fly in the woods it can come right down on top of these rigs and it gets us the shots like these to show you but rodney look at that dirt i mean could you ask for better no i i have been watching this dirt develop since thursday you know i was i'm not going to lie i didn't know what the weather forecast was actually going to turn out like i know there was forecast but i didn't know what the weather was actually going to do because it changes sometimes but on thursday i would have never guessed that we would be under the conditions that we were on friday night and definitely not the conditions that we saw yesterday and certainly certainly not would have expected to see what we're seeing here today not just on the trail the trail i wasn't worried about but i'm talking about everything as far as the trail the pits everything involved i mean this place unbelievable how much uh how much it's taken and how much it's uh still able to to bring us all right look at this we got caleb russell looking over his shoulder heading down the vp fuels pro row now and of course uh look at this we're gonna get an off off sequence fuel stop here ricky russell stopping on lap too caleb russell bypassing the pits wow so that might have been what he was doing looking to see if ricky was going to stop for an mmi pit stop there and uh of course get a little extra fuel now gotta wonder uh this could play big dividends for ricky he may be thinking and i don't know if it's a fuel mileage thing or whether they're thinking let's just go ahead and pit early and then when caleb pits he'll be able to to maybe make the pass on because i think that ricky probably feels confident enough and they feel confident enough to think that maybe ricky can catch back up to caleb but that's going to be a tall order to fill i think especially now that caleb can't be seen he might be ready to wick it up and usually a few extra lines he wasn't using with ricky right behind him yeah i mean obviously that's uh always the goal i mean caleb has said that many times in post race interviews he likes uh he has a race strategy that includes um you know a lot of tricks in his in his repertoire of tool belt but uh you know realistically when he can get out front and pull a gap he likes to do that if he can't he'd rather not let those guys follow him so he'd rather you know slow down and let them lead or kind of control the pace and then put in some sprints to try and shake those guys loose uh two laps into this one he wasn't able to shake ricky russell loose we saw caleb russell slow down coming into vp fuels pro row and grab a drink bottle um there is that's aspirin yep the 127 of jordan ashburn on that babbitt's online uh monster energy kawasaki team caleb russell now out in the finish line chicanes coming to the finish but uh you know he took a look back over his shoulder when he saw that uh there was a rider there and it was ricky russell he took that drink bottle and then dropped the hammer and uh i'm sure by now the pit boards have told him that ricky russell's gotten fuel because he looks to be riding with a whole new sense of urgency and i believe he might be trying to go ahead and pull that gap you were just talking about there rodney a 31-minute lap time on lap number one we're down to a 29-18 so nearly uh two minutes quicker that last time around as we are now one hour and one minute into this race daddy ball now checking in through the pits it looks like a last check we had him back in 10th place we saw him i think as high up as ninth and maybe now pushing for an eighth place position so bad the ball will be interesting to see just exactly what he's been able to do and muster up here on lap number two uh ricky russell checking in he's only 16 seconds back so he lost 14 seconds on that pit stop i think that he's capable of regaining that 14 seconds if necessary and especially as this race wears on and uh especially when uh caleb russell makes that pit stop unless caleb's able to stretch it out even more i mean that was 14 seconds at the finish line like we said now that he's by himself it might be time to let it rip you know what rodney i think we're going to get that stopwatch out we're going to need to use that clock that counter there the race clock on the top we're going to get that stopwatch out we'll see these guys on screen hopefully the racer tv crew will give us those static shots let us watch both riders come through we can use a tree folks you can play this game at home you can use a tree a banner whatever it is for reference and you start counting when the rider comes by and we can pass the info along to you but if you want to do it yourself it's a fun little game to play i like playing it there we see our third place rider there is jordan ashburn he's checked into scoring now with two laps complete and i can tell you by the lap times rodney uh unless i'm miscalculating we're gonna be looking at a six lap race here i'm thinking so we're right around that uh 30-minute mark and that would make sense and that should put us right at three hours or just under if they stay in this 29 minute range or so with what we're looking at right we've got something going on here we got the rear wheel off the 410 phoenix honda machine uh tyler shepardson if you're down there if you're able to get us an update on exactly it looks like they might be changing out a rear brake system looks like they're trying to break that master cylinder loose on the rear brake and they are trying to remove that entire rear brake system uh those guys hard at work those factory honda mechanics they've got the rear wheel ready to go back in andrew delong holding that bike a heartbreaker for delong uh i said he was as ready as he's ever been coming into this season and looked really good yeah he did i mean he started out strong a solid top five there at the end of lap number one looked like he was riding consistently there in lap number two until whatever issue this was that popped up has brought him into the pits uh rear brake issues i guess like we're assuming right now but we'll get the full scoop on that with tyler shepherds and t-ship here in just a moment and yeah i believe that's exactly what we're looking at and they've got the other system ready to go but they can't seem to get that other one off there so uh i mean obviously it's a better choice to go ahead and take the time the extra time to get that brake system switched out than trying to ride without i would assume correct yeah i mean you you would think but i i gotta be honest with you this switch has taken far too long um i mean these guys uh you know no no air to or no impacts no anything like that you know definitely need to uh that's something that should have been off there in about half that amount of time um unless it's possible he showed up they weren't prepared maybe they didn't know and in that case you know definitely don't want to be hard on those guys these are some of the best in the business but you know in a situation like this you can see andrew actually stepping in there and and taking over um you know it's a situation where if you have the time to be prepared ahead of time you want to have all the tools laid out you want to have the parts ready to go right you want to be ready to just slam that thing in and slam that thing out there they're they're now they're really getting on track they're going to have that wheel back on andrew certainly should be able to salvage some points on today but this is definitely going to affect his race for sure yeah no doubt heartbreaker there might be inspiration for round two when we head to florida here in just a few weeks knowing how well things are going for him right now and to see kind of the wheels come off for just a few moments there before he gets it all uh put back together uh right now as we watch these uh laps turn in we've got uh russell and russell and ashburn one two and three josh strang up to a fourth place position now thad duvall up to a fifth place position uh looks like uh stu baylor is sixth place now lane michael after two in seven johnny g uh garror johnny garror in the xc2 eighth place overall leading the xc250 class ben kelly still in ninth place mike wikowski now second place in the xc250 pro class 32 seconds behind your leader of johnny johnny g so looks like a good place for the new ampro yamaha rider mike watkowski two in a second place position right now yeah absolutely you know impressive ride for for mike there in uh second place in that xc2 class and tenth overall i mean uh you know this this early in the season to see the xc2 guys that high up in the overall uh this early in a race really shows the pace that they're pushing obviously johnny gerard and mike wikowski hard on the throttle yeah and doing everything they can i'll tell you i'm you know two laps into this one to see ben kelly in ninth uh given the severity of what i understand his crash to have been and and the uh you know the the shortcomings or injuries as as i understand them uh to see him battling inside the top ten shows a lot about his grit and his character you know this man is is basically running on three cylinders out of eight and and for him to be out there um you know again it is something that is rehab-able it is is recoverable from we've seen racers ride race and win with similar injuries but you know he himself said it was early this week so he's he's bought four days from this big crash in this injury um you know to see him out there battling valuable points in the ninth place overall position and i wouldn't be surprised to see him move up as the day goes on because he's a tough tough kid well we're obviously watching the action up front with caleb russell ricky russell jordan ashburn josh strang thad duval stu baylor and lane michael to see what's going to be going on with those guys but let's take a look back in that xc2 250 class and of course oh mercy down there in the pit still they're still working on this thing that's a hard rear brake change this is just going horribly yeah it is a six lap race for being told so gerrard leading mike wikowski in second craig the long only 10 seconds back now behind wikowski jonathan johnson who's a new rider there for the phoenix honda racing team and fourth in that xc2 program class and ryder leblanc rounding out the top five cody barnes also from the beta team running sixth he's just moved up from the xc3 class liam draper that tele energy ktm ride the 198 in seven snodgrass is running in the eighth place position looks like maybe some lost time there for evan smith as he drops back to ninth place on his husky and ben nelco in that number 10 spot rounding out those top 10 in the xc2 250 pro class with that we're going to take a quick break and hopefully andrew has his breaks completed by the time we get back from our break and we'll pick the action back up here from the season opener this vp fuels big buck gncc born of friends at motorcycle mechanics institute i'm rodney tom along with johnny gallagher tyler shepherdson also out with us and speaking out with us talking about the brakes a few moments ago before the break uh andrew delong got his brakes back on and back out in the race and we head over to tyler shepherdson in the phoenix honda racing pits with an update [Music] all right thanks rodney just like you said i'm down here in the phoenix racing honda pits with andrew delong's mechanic here now we saw him come in and we saw that whole back brake assembly system get changed talk us through it and what happened and uh how are you able to get it changed uh man andrew had a good start hey fifth place and uh it seems like uh one of our guys one of our crew said he had a real brake problem so we just could win and got ahead and changed the whole thing just to make sure you know he won't have any more issues out there all right so obviously you guys got a stack field out here andrew like you said was running top five but uh looking to get right back in it but um how is it having the whole rig here and having the whole team out here all four riders oh it's uh it's a handful uh for sure but i mean we got the right crew with us and uh we're we're definitely uh making it happen all right well good deal and thank you and good to see those phoenix rights and hondas out there well thanks a lot tyler great update and uh so a rear brake problem they weren't real sure what it was so they changed the whole assembly which kind of makes sense i think the only unfortunate thing was it was a little bit of an issue getting that getting that changed waiting on our leaders right now here at near the six and a half mile marker aka the monster mile now talk a little bit about this monster mile johnny i mean when we look at this it's a nice smooth path coming into this and i mean there looks like a hill or something there past this but what really happens in this monster mile so just before it it's actually a hill coming up out of the bottom there's definitely some soft uh ready sections down in there comes up but this is this is typical hard pack big buck soil right here um you know and this is what this uh the rain and the moisture and the snow and everything else that we've had has really helped out let's put some grip into this normally it's almost a polished blue groove hard pack uh this year there's actually some traction we hear the leaders should be coming to the shot pretty much any moment even the monster cans getting excited and swaying side to side caleb russell and ricky russell there he is the number one fmf factory ktm of caleb russell you can hear him revving that lapper he's hard on the throttle and he's headed into the monster mile now that's a long tight section of trees there we'll wait and we'll watch uh and we'll see exactly what kind of a break we last know that it was 14 seconds rodney at the uh at the finish line and i tell you what i think it has stayed about the same yeah we're so maybe somewhere i didn't see the time but i'm feeling maybe 20 seconds or so yeah he it hasn't grown too much so ricky russell has done a good job of managing that gap now keep in mind those of you folks watching at home you saw ricky russell pull in that was what we call a scheduled fuel stop uh ricky came in got fuel being that he did stop on lap two and we know the range of these machines there's no way that he's gonna be able to go to the finish on that fuel that he has he will need to stop one more time he can stop any of the remaining laps and that would give him enough fuel to make it to the finish line caleb russell on the other hand with three laps under his belt if he makes it back to the factory fmfktm rig he will only have to stop one time in a six lap race and he'll gain just those few valuable seconds of only having to pit once uh this is a little longer track the conditions aren't really bad as far as i think creating a a havoc situation where gas mileage will go down or anything like that so um i mean looking at the big picture there i mean do you think that maybe uh they figured uh ricky russell's gas mileage maybe he uses a little more gas than other folks and maybe needs that extra pit stop well there's a lot of possibilities there it could be a situation where ricky um is is either they felt they were close on the timing or the distance available to them in the fuel the ktm or the husky does have a slightly different fuel tank than the ktm i don't know the capacity of either but it is a possibility that maybe a slightly smaller tank on the husqvarna there is ktm the number one caleb russell he's out in those chicanes coming back the other way after the finish line and he is hard on the throttle head there is your third and fourth place riders the teammates of jordan ashburn and josh strang uh both in tow basically in that third and fourth place spots and looking good for that babbitt's energy kawasaki yeah josh uh seemed to have some struggles a little more struggles last year than what uh that jordan seemed to really mesh with i don't know necessarily program the bike or just the things just came to easier for him there towards the end of the season or whatever the case may be but something uh inspiring josh strang it looks like i know he's been riding with a few different people and so forth in the off season um maybe it's a new life for him because i mean he's starting out strong here today and having uh his teammate right there could be a good point to to key off of as this race wears on yeah absolutely there is thad duvall and quickly behind him there i believe that was lane michael possibly yeah um i but i didn't see steve baylor maybe that was stupid it definitely wasn't stew up here stu right here no this is lane so i don't know who that was directly behind uh behind the wall there um but anyway there we see so now lane michael has come through i did not see stu baylor i don't believe that was him because the rider that came through uh definitely had a camelback under their jersey which stu baylor wears a chest protector uh always always has probably always will so unless he changed that up i don't think that was stu um but regardless looks like our top six or seven have made it by this camera shot here and they are working their way towards the completion of lap number three here and uh here is ben kelly the 530 machine yep there he is ben kelly so he was last check was ninth place spot um and now we should be looking we're waiting and watching for johnny gerard mike watkowski and uh i'm going to assume that i missed stu baylor that now here maybe we'll get a better shot here jordan ashburn the 127 machine out in those finish line chicanes we know when we last saw uh his teammate josh trang was right behind him and there he is in that bright blue fly here and then cutting ahead now to the fmf powerpoint caleb russell up the fmf powerpoint and we'll see now it was 1850 when caleb pressed at the top of the uh powerpoint so we'll see if we can get a time back to ricky one hour 18 minutes 50 seconds caleb russell over the top oh look at this oh that wasn't was that ricky yeah it is ricky so it is 17 seconds so he's kept it almost identical over the course of almost a full lap of racing so ricky russell on the hammer not letting caleb russell get away caleb russell will have to pit this lap so that's going to be at least you know eight nine ten seconds there now is this a bike only section we're looking at right no this was the power point from yesterday as well um we went up that that same hill climb there oh okay this oh this is the creek jumper yeah okay creek jump goes the other way this is the the big hill climb with the rock lights at the top ah yes i'm with you now i'm with you a lot of fans down there that's the beauty of being down there man i mean you got some really cool things to watch in real close vicinity there for for the race fans yeah they can walk literally side to side and and catch quite a bit so we'll see what we can get here as far as who are we know uh our third and fourth place riders are ashburn and strang uh thad of all we believe in fifth and there was another rider kind of attached to him may have been baylor uh just didn't really look like baylor so um see who that was and exactly what the running order is as they come through here in just a matter of a few minutes we have seen just the top two through here we've not yet seen uh ashburn and strang so wow a torrid pace for caleb russell and ricky russell as we are now approaching two minutes back to third place spot well i guess we're at a minute and uh basically a minute in 40 seconds oh okay um wow minute 40 it is right now man they've gained 30 seconds on third and fourth place in this last lap alone they had a minute and nine seconds it separated when they came through the finish line at the end of the lap number two yeah because remember it was it was 118.50 at the top of the hill we're at 120 50 right now so we're at two minutes and there's jordan ashford so just over two minutes back now from caleb russell to the second or to the third and fourth place machines of jordan ashburn and josh strength caleb russell and ricky russell are stretching this thing out right now strange start looking kind of aggressive out there mike he might be starting to put some pressure trying to pick the pace up but with jordan ashburn to uh try to bridge some of that gap back yeah and uh it's looking like they're uh he's either that or he's just seeing that third place position there he's saying he wants to be on the podium and that's always a tough situation when you're you know your teammate i think those guys at high voltage last year came down to the two of them the last couple turns looked like ashburton was going to get his first podium of the year and strang wrestle it away from him there with uh just a few inches to go well so i would almost say there is there now that was that the ball that was definitely that ball and it is it's the baylor so i didn't i didn't recognize me looked a little bit different but there is stu baylor now up to the sixth place spot um right on the rear wheel of thad duval so those guys fifth and sixth and they are through at the powerpoint lex next up we should see and there he is the 523 of lane michael on the blue machine that just came through our shot there so that is your seventh place rider and uh that's a left rider there next up should be uh ben kelly on that 5 30 ktm machine seeing some of the circo guys down there good to see the new teams and new shirts out in the woods for sure the riders that made the decision to to pit in that first lap so coming through on the second lap ben kelly he actually hit it uh couldn't see all the way down to the kawasaki pistol but uh it's cool to see jordan ashburn and josh drank both pushing each other as they try to close that gap on the first and second place riders uh one thing about strength strang is actually the only other competitor in the xc1 field that has won an xc1 championship so no doubt he's using some of that veteran knowledge to help push his way up through the pack as i'm sure both of those guys are very hungry for a podium here at round one yeah you know josh strang obviously has his teammate there uh and jordan ashburn it you know and those guys they're gonna go a little bit easy on each other in terms of how they're battling but uh you know they're definitely not uh definitely not gonna go easy on each other with a podium on the line you know with the podium on the line they're gonna push each other they're gonna push hard and there is grant baylor so that's the kind of one of the first shots we've seen today of the 314 machine and uh looks like he has got the 282 of mike wachowski hot on his heels now has winkowski made the pass i did not see johnny gerard oh okay maybe he i think he might have came through when we were when we were doing our mic switch and our chatting there so we'll assume we missed him until we find out otherwise uh but he was about 45 seconds of back of johnny gerard last week knew and johnny gerard leading that xc2 class on that trail gestures ktm back machine johnny was another rider too that uh as we mentioned before he missed a lot of last year so it's awesome to see him jump right back on the bike and pick up right where he left off we saw him get a podium and snowshoe um he was really excited about that the year before last and then what really wanted to keep that momentum rolling into 2019 but unfortunately had those injuries that kept him sidelined there for a little bit but clearly has been training hard and working hard to get back at it as he's leading this xc2 class and then mike wakowski making good work of that bike switch jumping on that uh 250f which last year he was on a two-stroke all season so i know uh he said earlier preseason that he was very excited and a lot more comfortable on a four-stroke machine so awesome to see him putting that to work and running top 10 overall here yeah absolutely a great run for mikowski and you know that's a crazy story with johnny draw um i i've heard some bits and pieces of it would love to someday get the the rundown from him on exactly what happened it was uh not actually injuries he had some uh he was having some medical issues he went and got checked out ended up being uh from what i understand anyway not speaking for him a crazy misdiagnosis where some uh a mass that showed up on an x-ray they believed to be cancerous and and they felt they several doctors diagnosed him as as having cancer within his lungs and and it was leading some other issues and it turned out to be i don't remember all the details but it turned out to be something completely unrelated uh it wasn't it wasn't cancer and he spent all of last season or several months uh undergoing you know treatment and research from what he thought was a serious life-threatening illness and and ended up to be not so great news you know and he's just excited to be back racing and doing what he loves and to be able to do it well as we roll through this when we are working still i believe on lap number three here we should be within just a couple of minutes i know last check uh we were seven minutes out so we're probably within about two or so at this point as we wait patiently for the arrival of our leaders at the the finish line how far has caleb russell been able to stretch it out over ricky or is ricky been able to to match that pace and keep it pretty much where it was or maybe even gain some ground out there but also i'm very interested to see what's going to be going on between ashburn and his teammate josh strang there is they've got a whale of a battle going on and about 30 seconds back behind them was that duvall but i think that that may be bridging some of that gap right now also yeah it seems like stat is on the charge and i think he's trying to get back up in there and interject himself into that battle for a podium uh you know that obviously wanting to win today uh but surely you know starting off the season on the podium especially being as far back as he was at one point early in the race we saw him back in a 10th place spot one so to battle up as far as he has up to fifth you know a phenomenal charge for him uh but i would like to i or i would think that thad double rider his caliber determination is not done yet but i mean that is that is the murders row of gncc in front of him strang ashburn russell russell i mean none of those guys are going to roll over for him but you know pads got the chops to get the passes made and get the work done to get up there and battle for a podium or potentially even a win so um you know but right now caleb russell ricky russell two-minute lead over third place jordan ashburn uh they are absolutely shredding rodney really curious to see how this plays out with the fuel stops because caleb russell is going to have to stop this lap they do have vp pro row ahead of them uh yet before they complete the slap number three uh which will be basically the halfway mark of the race um curious to see how this pans out because caleb's gonna have to give up at least you know eight to ten seconds they're coming in get fuel getting a drink of water and uh and getting that new uh that fuel and then after that you know they're going to be basically um you know you would think close to wheel to wheel and back battling over that top spot with ricky russell only being about 16 seconds back he'll be in the same corner with caleb and uh it'll be a whole different race from there so definitely interesting to see how that plays out rodney i i think you're absolutely right so i think we're going to uh send tyler shepherdson over to vp fuels get an update on that uh this situation caleb russell will be able to get out of the pits ahead of ricky russell or how that plays out yeah exactly that's what i'm kind of interested in so we're sending t-ship over to get the bird's eye view of exactly what's going to be taking place and who's going to get by and if anybody gets by caleb russell in that what we expect to be pit stop this time around when he comes through the vp fuels pro road next time around and we'll go down there for an mmi pit stop and see just exactly what transpires can he get in and out fast enough to keep ricky russell from making that pass and when he does how intense are things going to get i mean i i think that but you know and and here backing back up and and going back to the case where ricky actually pitted a lap earlier what we expect was a lap early and gonna have to pit again i would imagine that caleb's probably keying in on that same exact thing yeah you know and oh there he is caleb russell on screen and this section right here is on the back side of the start crazy i could recognize that that quickly yes i did race it yesterday but it was just a couple trees so he has got about two more straightaways until we're gonna see him pop out here into the ktm fmf red bull ktm team pits and those guys are gonna be ready and waiting with everything that he needs to rejuvenate both himself and that machine for the last hour and a half of battle here one hour 28 minutes 58 seconds into this race and this race is gonna come out as close as close can be to three hours man the track crew did a phenomenal job here he is folks caleb russell into the pits see his wife chandler with the water bottles his mechanic john there with the fuel jug uh team member chuck there another mechanic uh with the fuel are also giving caleb some stuff and what do we got for time rodney uh we got waiting right now so we'll watch when he pulls out all right let's throw it down to tyler and see what's going on anybody get by is uh is ricky coming by yet all right so we're down here caleb russell in the pits as we look at ricky russell going by right now so ronnie that answers your question they were able to get caleb russell in and out of these factory ktm pits quick enough to still maintain what seemed like right around a 10 second lead as ricky russell we saw him pit after lap two so he blows right by his pits and back into the woods this battle is a lot tighter well if that was the game plan for ricky russell to try to capitalize on this pit stop certainly didn't work out for him but he was able to gain a little extra time and so far today the only person we're seeing that's able to match the pace that caleb russell is running is ricky russell uh and those guys have both got well ricky had uh well over a minute well two minutes over the third and fourth place battle so i mean not saying a lot about the pace that those guys set early on i mean i know that we always see this pace but wow was that pace maybe even a little quicker than what we saw even last year did ricky up the game that much i i mean it's definitely possible it's hard to know you know i've uh i've spent enough time around caleb to kind of read through his words sometimes and um i don't think i've ever seen him with quite the um i don't want to say swagger but quite the the excitement to get the season started you know usually it's kind of like hey man you know we're going gncc racing yeah i'm gonna do what i do but this year you can tell by his posts on social media and even what he said in person like it was his goal to come out and to make a statement at these first couple rounds speaking of making a statement josh strang has made a statement that he wants that third place position he has wrestled it away from jordan ashburn there are your third and fourth place riders they just came by on screen there uh and they are now on their way to vp fuels pro row but the battle is on for that third place spot ashburn still right there and close on the rear wheels now switching to the finish line caleb russell on the number one machine railing that rut oh both feet off the pegs never lifting off the throttle this man is on a mission to try and get back out on ricky russell after that fuel stop we saw him take what was about a 14 second lead stretch it out to a little over 20 that lap and then obviously have to give a little bit of that time back uh in the pits to get some fuel get some goggles and get a little bit of a drink now ricky russell we're gonna wait and see rodney he should be checking at the finish line pretty much any moment here in fact he should have already checked in i would say um we don't see him on screen yet though johnny down in the pits we got uh jordan ashburn comes by so he's close on the heels i did see jordan go by still waiting on josh down here but in the pits of thad duval we got a pit board that says mamba mentality so no doubt paying a tribute to the late kobe bryant as he shows him that sign when he comes by to really push him to dig deep and dive through because as we know this is thad's first race back with that knee injury and here he comes now wow interesting there as that goes by good good update there tyler appreciate that interesting if tyler missed josh strang or whether he we lost josh strang in that little short piece of time from the time we saw him on the last camera shot till till he made it to the pits yeah i'm almost thinking in the chaos he may have missed him there because literally it's only a few hundred yards from where we saw that string had made the pass on ashburn and was into that third place spot um but it is possible i mean you know there is a little wood section in there anything could have happened uh we'll see here in just a few moments because i'll be checking in at the finish line i sort of expect that we'll see josh strang still in that third place spot and uh it'll be jordan ashburn in the actual fourth place spot and then again thad duvall back in fifth um but these guys are just so hard on the throttle right now i cannot believe how hard caleb russell and ricky russell are pushing the pace they are just making it look easy out there and they are really pulling away from these the rest of the pack well as we see right now down in the mmi pit stops looks like we're about ready to see a pit stop with uh stu baylor as we're expecting him in we're going to take a commercial break here in just a moment we're going to stick around for just a second though to see how these pit stops all unfold for some of these guys as they are anticipating the riders in at any given moment again caleb russell and ricky russell have made their way through with three laps complete still waiting on jordan ashburn and josh stranger should say josh string and jordan ashburn at last check no pit stops there just a pit board for your sixth place ride of stu baylor as he makes his way by and looks like a pretty big gap between he and thad duval so stu baylor's lost quite a bit of time or has not made up very much time i guess i should say since the last time that we saw these guys out on the course so with that being said looks like stu is rolling cold right now to see whether or not he's going to be able to make things happen on the new circo ride meanwhile caleb russell still the man to beat stick around we'll find out if anybody can do it as we continue with more live coverage from the vp fuels big buck gncc in just a moment born of family values and a homegrown duval is over in the pits tyler shepherdson's headed that way right now to try to get the lowdown on this does not look good right now as johnny gallagher joins us and this now we know he's got a knee injury from last year um our producer's saying he thinks it's his foot but i almost have to wonder if maybe we aren't looking at a situation where maybe the knee is giving us him an issue and this is not a good sign at all uh for thad duvall to see him off in the pits i mean he doesn't look to be in a lot of pain but very frustrated and let down right now at this point yeah and uh you know we've got tyler shepherdson headed over there tyler if you can hear us just give them a little bit of space obviously let them let them figure out what's going on and if uh if we're able to get an official comment that would be great um but definitely don't uh we don't we don't need to uh yeah we do they're still trying to figure out exactly they'll figure it out we'll stick that microphone in there tyler nonetheless that's that's a heartbreaker for thad we're gonna hope it's it's nothing more than a twisted ankle or twisted knee or whatever it may be and that we'll see him back on the bike here in two weeks uh that's definitely a heartbreaker you know just uh just a few moments ago we were talking about his charge up from 10th all the way up to that fifth place spot uh where we had just seen him um he was all the way up to fifth and and now we're showing him on screen in sixth but we know that he's actually sitting in in the pro pits and uh we'll certainly wish him the best and and when we're able to we'll give you guys an update on what's going on there now uh stu baylor was able to uh take advantage of the situation right there i do have something to point out there was only uh eight seconds that separated those guys but get this dude baylor up the fifth he's only 17 seconds now behind jordan ashburn in the fourth place position ashford is about 10 seconds back behind josh strang i'm telling you stu baylor might be able to take that sureco to a podium position finish and how how huge of a ride would that be today man if he can keep that motorcycle underneath him for three hours and put that thing on the podium i'll tell you what belton south carolina sue doesn't live in belton anymore but they're gonna party anyway so sorry to interrupt you there just a few moments ago becca but anyway we were talking to you about the school visits but uh i just want to talk to you about your favorite track the big buck and you know what is really cool you always said that the big buck gncc was your favorite track and you never won here before till today yeah um i people ask me have um people have asked me a lot frequently like what's your favorite track and uh big buck is seems to be the first first name out of my mouth and i think it's because um every time i've raced here in the last five years i would say like there has always been such a great battle with the top women and it's just always such a fun track with so many different line choices and so much variety and like we had some mud sections today and uh that kind of tossed it up a little bit but yeah i just i just really like this track well tell us about this race today that was a real nail biter i guess yeah um i was i was in second pretty quick off the start and then i fell back to fourth actually and had to make the pass to get back to second i had to pass rachel and tricker and um so it's pretty tough to get around them but once i did i i caught up to tayla and uh her and i just kind of rode the track together and i was just able to follow her and um i was just feeling really good and uh she unfortunately made a mistake and and i just made the pass and um i'm just feeling feeling really good i was just having such a great time out on the track uh the dirt was so good and um i i was just really feeling a flow out there and i'm just really loving the yamaha and right i was gonna and i was getting ready to point that out we talked about the season of change uh you made the change in the offseason too yeah um i decided to make the switch back to yamaha i rode yamaha's eight years prior to for eight years prior to switching to ktm which i only rode for three and the yamaha just feels like home to me and with my suspension team at jdp suspension and just johnny and tyler you know like we really have the band back together and i think this year is going to be a really awesome year for us and and for yamaha awesome that is great well congratulations to you on the season opening win you did it in style got the overall as well as the wxc win um and just a phenomenal day of racing good memories for you as well yeah for sure thank you um the women's class is going to be a really good one to watch this year we've got a lot of fast girls and there's going to be a lot of good racing all righty well becca thanks for stopping by good luck to look to you it looked uh forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the season and we are looking right now on screen as we should have our leaders checking in now johnny gallagher yeah there he is caleb russell you know rodney it's just crazy to see you know year in and year out how uh the track true can track crew can do such a phenomenal job with this place i mean you know this year we've seen the torrential rains we saw snow on thursday and uh you know through all of that they're still coming back oh look at this ricky russell he is closer than he was last lap yes we know that caleb uh did uh pit for fuel there and he gained a few seconds back but i think ricky might have chipped away a few seconds on his own as well but uh just to see you know like like becca was saying with just how how this track shapes up with the so many lines with all the variety that this track has you know it's throwing a lot of curveballs these guys and these two are just you know you don't want to be on the on the russell be it ricky or caleb uh bandwagon this early in the season but man right now it kind of looks like these guys are on another level it does it certainly appears to be that way and you know something to point out here you know we talk about this especially past the halfway point a lot when things start to stretch out or start to tighten back up we talk about the lapped riders today we've got nearly 400 riders on the racetrack that's almost double or actually it is double often times what they're used to riding when oftentimes there are 180 to 200 riders on the track we got almost 400 out there so literally double what they're used to out there so that means there's going to be a lot more lap traffic out there how do you think that's going to play out in this one yeah i mean that's something that's more kind of uh more like a morning race like you know what uh the girls and and and the top morning riders both on saturday and sunday deal with you know the morning races many more amateur racers out there and it's just a whole different dynamic you know becca how does that affect you know your your last couple laps there when you guys are battling for the lead is is it kind of like having moving trees out there with all the lappers do you do you really just kind of have to look ahead you consider that part of your race what goes through your mind when you're battling through lappers like caleb russell and ricky russell are about to be doing here the last hour of this one yeah it really is tough um you never really know what um skill level of lapper you're lapping sometimes especially in the morning and sometimes they take lines that just run into yours so it's super important to be patient and try to really pick good lines and that's why this place is so good because of all the lines that develop here like even if it's a longer slower line you could probably make it around that lapper so um it it definitely you definitely have to take that into consideration for the morning race and um just just make it happen safely and smoothly i i actually had a pretty bad get-together with a lapper on lap three and had a really bad crash um unfortunately like for him i think he made it through but unfortunately for me it took me a second to get up um but you know once you get up you just gotta do it again and uh hope you can get around each lap and we've seen that play into the afternoons as here we see our third place rider that is josh strang on the 114 babbitts racing monster energy kawasaki he is now appears to have broken clear of jordan ashburn rodney i believe you said it was 10 seconds at last count there uh looks like it may be slightly more than that now and the rider that we're going to be watching for is that 514 machine of stu baylor on the sureco he was making inroads towards that fourth place position of jordan ashburn and it looks like he's not only made inroads it looks like he oh no there is ashburn and there is baylor so he is on his rear wheels rodney so that is a battle that we're watching unfold and that would be over the fourth place spot but back to that lapper thing rodney think about last year we had the battle between caleb russell and thad duvall decided by lappers at two different races on the last lap both times going in favor of caleb russell or i'm sorry going in favor of thad duvall and and caleb russell being the one to have the issues so you gotta wonder is that weighing on caleb's fine right now knowing ricky's right back there and thinking man i gotta try and close this thing out with this many riders on the track i can't have a get together with one of these guys well i'm sure as he gets thicker and thicker into the lap traffic i'm sure that is beginning to weigh on his mind but i'm sure also he's hoping that these guys are are not going to wane so easily to second place ride as he makes his way up but uh you know like you said usually the first guy lets them it's the signal they know that the pros are coming so they start looking for him and they start being a little a little nicer i guess to the guys coming up fast behind him so that may play huge favors for ricky russell here today and it may also help out a couple of these other guys to to close that gap on ricky and caleb because there is a little bit of time in between those first place guys so maybe maybe some of those guys will get out and slow it down just a little bit for that second place ride which would tighten up the third and second place so hey you never know i mean we're still an hour and ten minutes away or so from a checkered flag we're looking at a six lap race lane michael on screen so that should move lane now up to a sixth place spot physically now look at this i just noticed rodney look at our overall we now have four count them four xc2 riders in the top ten actually more because that duvall is still on screen there right so we've got johnny gerard leading jonathan johnson's second that's a big change for him uh craig delong up to third and mike watkowski dropping back to that fourth place spot there is grant baylor so there is the other of the sherco baylor team uh he is there in we think he's about eighth in that xc1 pro class and here comes it looks like another rider on the gas hard to tell who it is from there and of course our screen for us um but uh there is that is mike watkowski there that is jonathan johnson so those guys are shaking it up that may have been craiged along so man i'll tell you what that second third and fourth place battle in that xc2 pro lights class is uh is really wheel the wheel two seconds between first and second two seconds between second and third right now there you go that's a battle right there yeah so looking at the the the next riders in the line of uh top ten uh i would almost have to think that maybe possibly we've seen elaine michael actually move into a top 10 overall position as we do see thad duval out of this one now so lane might be back in the top ten overall now just uh for uh just to let you know he is running in the sixth place position as far as the xc1 pro class is concerned but right now 11th place overall with time adjustments so that's where the differences happen the light looks like we just saw another one of our top riders checking through there just a moment ago with that red background number plate so uh here to monster miles still plenty of things going on as we are joined back in booth now by uh tyler shepherdson and tyler here with us and of course uh a lot of things going on down there in that pro pit area vp fuels pro row and i know the mmi pit stops uh man they they they're really off sink i mean riders are not pitting riders are not pitting when we expect them to or pitting before we expect them to i mean so it's a little different down there it seems like at least in this first round yeah rodney you're absolutely right i mean we've kind of seen every team's pitch strategy a little bit all over the place but i just came from the rockstar energy husk varna pitts obviously thaad coming into the season as always he's a title contender he's one of the guys going after the title and uh uh no doubt he would be up there in the running we knew he was coming in with a little bit of a knee injury we saw him pull off wasn't able to get back there and talk to him but the the 989 machine is on a stand and the pressure washers are out so undoubtedly it looks like thad duvall's day here at round one is coming to an end which uh is a real bummer to see especially with the title implications on the line but just as you were saying i mean all these teams have been kind of scattered back and forth between when they're pitting we saw it seems like half the xc1 class pit on the second lap and then the next lap comes by the other half pit so now they're on this alternating schedule and rodney i really think a big part of that is this track is a lot longer as far as mileage is concerned than what we're used to typically seeing so i think people are trying to play that strategy every way they can to get an advantage well gas mileage should probably be a big question there i mean obviously conditions i don't think are bad enough to warrant the fact that they're using a lot more gas than they normally would i mean the course itself is is perfect i mean it's not too soft it's not too hard i mean it's it's right where it needs to be i mean you don't get this very often you can't order this you can't make this half the time be like it is and uh to to know that uh you know uh puts a lot of ideas in your mind as to what can happen and uh and of course gives you a lot of speculation a lot to speculate about so that's what we that's that's the point where we are right now speculation for a lot of this but uh we do know uh in the speculation or not caleb russell man on a mission last season uh going to retire uh all these other guys are really hungry to beat caleb because they know if he leaves and leaves on top then he won't be they'd be beaten and i have to think if somebody like thad would win the championship the year after caleb retires there's always going to be that looming over yeah but if caleb russell hadn't retired would you have won that championship and that's the thing that that duval and many of these guys ricky russell all of them want to beat down they want to be able to beat caleb in his last year so they won't have that looming over their head when they do win a championship in 2021 yeah absolutely and and to your point there that's kind of been my own personal biggest storyline coming into the season is exactly what you said caleb has came in and said that this is his last year in xc1 which for one kind of leaves the door open for what the plans are for 2021 uh we know he's got that teammate and former gncc or ryan sypes is kind of doing whatever he wants to do so maybe that's an option there and he likes a 125 i'm just kidding i'm just kidding but yeah so i mean coming into the season exactly what you said rodney this is every single person on that front lines last opportunity to dethrone caleb russell the most winningest gncc rider of all time seven straight championships more race wins than anybody that's ever done it and this is the last year that anybody will have a chance to dethrone him and as we mentioned earlier there's only one guy in this field right now that has won an xe1 championship that's not caleb russell and that's josh strang who we see up there in that third place position wow i didn't realize that but you're absolutely right we've lost all past champions done there now it seems like huh yep so no doubt a little bit uh a little bit of extra oomph on those uh championship runs this year from everyone that's out there on that front row well give you an idea on the stats caleb russell has 60. 60 overall wins in gncc racing which puts him top of the leaderboard in the all-time wins records for the bike side of things however bill balance has 67 atv wins he's second in the atv ranks and chris borge is first right now in the atv ranks with 75. so you start looking at numbers like 75 67 and 60. man these are the elite of the elite in our sport of racing and whether it be atv or bikes either way whenever you compare wins that's impressive stuff but going back to just caleb russell's impressive right here i mean scott summers the great scott summers only had 46 wins rodney smith 33 wins eddie lojack 26 wins he's tied for fourth and fred andrews also tied for fourth there with 26 overall wins uh good to see all these guys well rodney smith set the track today he's with beta you got ed lojack out here with low jacks yamaha and he's got bicycles he's also helped some amateur riders out there freddie andrews and team green kawasaki i mean just some pretty cool things going on there as far as as these record holders and you have to wonder will caleb russell be sticking around here i know his son's due to start racing here pretty soon also talking the crew today he asked me the question why do you take what do you say 10 seconds [Laughter] i've had some good conversations with that boy but that kid i was talking to him friday and he's ready to he wants to go racing but i was also talking to dad caleb he says i told him when he can pick his bike up and start it then we'll start racing he says i don't expect him to start racing until later this year maybe not even until next year so uh you know so caleb's probably focusing on this last year a little bit and then he's going to focus i would say probably a little bit of like what you're talking about hinting towards and then also being a race dad i think that would be pretty cool too absolutely and uh you mentioned crew dude i mean part of gncc is the the activities that go on after hours in between races and one of the things that gncc does is the the stasic bike races and crews been out there racing those as well so no doubt he already has that competitive spirit but just as we were talking about everybody wanting to beat caleb russell imagine how he feels coming into the season knowing he can wrap up eight in a row and retire on top yeah and that that number that number is unbelievable i mean barry hawk has eight championships but he did it seven on an atv and one on a motorcycle very eight time and uh you got nine times there by by by bill balance but again that was on an atv uh competition and things obviously a little bit different so caleb even at seven is sitting in an amazing position because that's two more than rodney smith and and also uh scott summers and i remember when uh when caleb got his fifth championship scott summers came from out of nowhere he came in didn't tell anybody he was coming he kind of snuck up to the finish line whenever caleb won his race he congratulated him and just kind of faded into oblivion and i think that was the coolest and the classiest thing i've seen in a long time i want to see scott summers around the track a lot more but i think that was so cool the way that he did that oh you're absolutely right i was there and witnessed that as well and here we got caleb on screen now but i think perhaps one of the more impressive things about this too is the time frame that he did it in i mean no disrespect to any past champions all of them guys are absolutely insane at what they did but uh back then it was it was roger bike occasionally and show up on sunday and race and now the level of training the level of fitness uh with all the different supplements and nutrients i mean it is a full-time job to train for sundays the race is one during the week it's a science it's turned into science too i mean uh just like you said i mean uh the guys say you know uh back in the day i mean here we got caleb russell coming down at vp fuels pro row barry hawk the way he got started on the motorcycle was he was following in his footsteps of bob sloan the iron man that named the iron man gncc after where he did uh atvs and motorcycles and he used a motorcycle to train for the atv and that's kind of what barry was doing and he learned so well on and uh i mean just got word i'm sorry you got interrupted there but ben kelly i guess is another writer that's out right now so that's another heartbreaker there and we know coming into this one uh he was a little down after the interview talking to johnny i mean it was obvious he had a pretty bad get off so i'm sorry sure he's pretty sore uh he still might be able to score some points today at least in class if nothing else so be interesting to see how this day pans out for him so uh there it is we've got uh dad duvall out we got ben kelly out that's two key players in our top three or top four overall that we were expecting to be buying and battling for podiums today so that's got the door wide open and you know josh strang i ain't saying he's taking advantage of a situation but josh strang actually put himself in position before the incident where thad duvall found himself out of the race so rodney here we got ricky russell coming into the pits this is on the third lap here so ricky russell as he continues to hunt down caleb we saw caleb come by a while ago he grabbed a bottle but didn't pit this lap ricky did pit so this is where we're seeing those pit strategies unwind and this is where it's really going to make the difference as caleb comes very very quick pit stop there in the mma pit stop there for uh ricky russell but uh not quick enough uh not gonna be able to bridge any gaps two lap cart is out on that one look at that two hours is what we're into this race two hours like 21 seconds i mean we are on target for a three hour exact uh time there that was a 30 minute and 15 second lap time and just to give you an idea this race has slowed down the pace has slowed down about 30 40 seconds for caleb russell on the last lap or so and i think we can lend the part of that to the fact that that lap traffic's out there and he doesn't have that pressure being applied by ricky russell but i think black traffic probably has as much to do anything with it as anything else oh no doubt about it but right there what we just witnessed is a lot of the reason why caleb has done what he has done we saw that drone shot coming through the finish line chicanes there caleb is just so smooth and so fast in those sections we saw him with an open track right there made quick work of the one lapper that was there as he heads off into the trees and back into the woods going into this second to last lap we're still waiting on ricky russell to make it through the section of woods that's right after the vpp vp fuels pro row and make his way into the finish line section but uh yeah the russell's both they're they're running away with it today no doubt about it josh strang very impressive ride for that former uh gncc champion string i've been trying to get back into this winning waves for a few years i think uh some injuries a few years ago kind of like took the wind out of his sails and he just kind of i don't know just kind of i don't want to say faded into oblivion there's been kelly now as he makes his way back behind the ktm pits he's obviously in a little bit of pain don't know that he necessarily had a crash but whatever the the issue is it's enough for him to say that's enough for today yeah and as johnny gallagher alluded to and ben even told us in his interview he he came into this one not at a hundred percent so it might be that pre-existing injury that he had coming into this round forcing him out as we just get word that uh caleb russell as ricky russell comes through and checks in at the finish line a minute and 25 second difference right now yep that's a pretty impressive stance that we're seeing posted up by caleb russell um you know after talking and listening to what johnny had to say about caleb and his mindset coming into this season i almost have to think that these guys might be in a worse position than they ever have whenever they go out to race against caleb russell because right now caleb's putting absolutely zero pressure on himself he's out here to have a good time and to me that could and if this is any indication could spell a big road of hoe for these boys to try to beat caleb he's going to be kind of untouchable this year if he keeps writing like this yeah and i i personally i mean i do a lot of things uh outside of gncc but i catch a lot of slack for this whole caleb russell thing i'm a huge caleb russell fan and it's because of what he's done and what he's been able to accomplish and i know people talk about talking about him a lot but he's given us every reason to talk about him a lot i mean and and that and the naysayers are honestly i hate to say it they're just jealous i mean i mean don't hate the player hate the game you know what i mean he's just doing what he's paid to do what he's always wanted to do and that's to strive to be the best and that's what he's achieved so don't hate him for that no absolutely not and and not only that i think if you go down the pro row and ask everybody what makes him to the level that he is it's not ju all these guys ride a dirt bike fast all these guys ride a motorcycle unbelievably fast i think what is different is just like you alluded to is in between the ears of caleb russell he knows when he needs to push and he knows when he can maintain and i think uh he just has that that race smart and that race iq that gets him out to the front at the end of the the race and it took it took him a couple years to learn that you know i mean you have to learn how to win and it takes some time sometimes for those guys to do it uh josh strang has checked in now he's a minute and 45 seconds behind ricky russell there is stu baylor now up to the fourth place position as he's gotten around jordan ashburn not sure what's going on there 26.2 second difference there there's grant baylor going through the uh pits there and maybe taking an mmi pit stop for himself there but wow things are changing up as we head into the final hour of this race and this is where the big changes usually take place tyler as we roll into lap number five of six it's caleb russell ricky russell josh strang stu baylor and still waiting on that fifth place ride which i think is going to be jordan ashburn checking in 25 seconds now behind stu baylor that's the top five stu baylor's got that sureco on rails right now looking at lap times a 30-31 for him a 30-32 for josh strang at the moment he's not gaining time on strength but is a podium looming for the new circo brand and stu baylor in the air force here today i don't know we're going to have to find out stick around find out with us gncc live continues after this born of family values and a shepherdson and johnny gallagher and that is the phoenix honda racing team as they're waiting on their rider at least one of them andrew delong coming in a few moments ago well a couple laps ago with a complete brake system change on that rear wheel but they've got big things going on in that xc2 class right now their rider actually uh was running in a top ten and currently still is in a top ten position he has dropped to the third place position in the xc2 250 pro class now he drops from uh for second to third and from eighth to ninth overall but it's still johnny gerard uh craig delong now into the number two spot johnny jonathan johnson who's made that switch to the phoenix honda racing team into that ninth place position uh lane michael just to give you an idea is still running a uh top six position in class he is in the tenth place position overall right now but still a stellar ride by lane michael i know that 10 doesn't look can appear so well behind those xc250 guys but a stellar ride and a great performance today by elaine michael yeah absolutely and and lane is another guy just like we talked about with stu baylor ever since stu has been riding a dirt bike he's been on ktm lane michael's kind of in that same boat he's pretty much exclusively ridden a ktm or a husqvarna which they share they come out of the same factory right um so they're pretty similar and i think he did a brief stint on i want to say a honda but it was another japanese brand and then he made the jump over to yamaha this year with also xc2 teammate mike witkowski and i know that uh them two and josh drang have actually been spending a lot of time with those three training together that might be what's helping josh strang out a little bit here too i mean reinvigorating that program for him right now as well wayne eller standing there and of course as we uh look down and see these mechanics biting time and wondering and waiting as to what's going to happen you wonder how can you do that well i'll tell you how you can do it you can go to motorcycle mechanics institute and you can be a motorcycle mechanic yourself and if you think well why would i want to be a mechanic i'll tell you what to catch up with lucas staton from ampro yamaha and you'll find out what's so cool about it [Music] so i've raced i've raced all my life i think i started doing gncc's with 2008 probably and i have been the mechanic for probably six years now and uh i raced xc2 for the gcc series for three or four four years and i went down with the impro team just to train and stuff and then i got my foot in the door and started helping here and there and then all of a sudden it's a full-time position and i love it i wouldn't want to do anything else and uh you know i've been i've been doing it for six years like i said and i love it i enjoy every minute of it like i when i was racing i always wanted to work in the industry i never wanted to work a normal 40 hour week like digging ditches or whatever i always wanted to do something in the industry and luckily i found this and and i i don't mind getting up every day and going to work you know it's pretty cool been an xc1 mechanic for the really the past five years i was with ricky russell last year i was with him for three years and this is the first time i've actually worked on an xc2 guy and you know it's it's pretty much the same it's a smaller placement engine and uh you know i have this would be my first race so i haven't had an xc2 race yet but i hope it'll be the same and i think it'll still be good my name is lucas statum i work for the ampro yamaha team and this year i'm mechanical for mike witkowski and xc2 class [Music] oh man the motorcycle mechanics institute uh spotlight feature there that's going to be a great thing getting to know some of these mechanics here in 2020 uh we we kind of did dabbled a little bit with it last year but uh that's just one thing that we really want the men behind the men you know what i mean the guys that that really helped make things work out there uh talking there just a few moments ago obviously we've been focusing a lot on xc1 and xc2 people were wondering what's going on with xc3 we haven't mentioned it since the whole shot and that was jason rains taking the early lead in that one well after three laps of racing complete those guys do in the next few minutes reigns had a two second lead 1.8 seconds over cole madison and then hayes the number 722 in that number three spot chase colville in fourth on that new beta ride the number 318 machine was only five seconds out of a podium position uh jake froman the 862 on the husqvarna rounding out fifth place then logan kiddick in sixth place on the 59. uh morse de los furtere and zimple rounding out your top ten and look at the healthy numbers we got nearly uh what was it 16 or 17 riders i mean we were looking at eight or 10 riders last year so the class is starting to show a little bit of improvement a little bit of growth and i think that's a pretty good sign if you ask me tyler yeah absolutely rodney that fmf xc3 class it it was built as kind of two different things it was for past champions to come back and be able to race guys like jason reigns and also built for up and coming riders developed that truck i'm sorry didn't mean to cut in on you but i just saw this right here mike witkowski has taken over the lead in the xc2 250 class and uh johnny gerard now into the number two spot uh he's 16 seconds back craig the long only one and a half seconds behind him jonathan johnson another 3.6 seconds back in that fourth place position so if gerard has found some problems he's in a tough position trying to recoup he's got to get it done pretty quick because he's got two fast young guns coming in hard and fast in both the long and of course jonathan johnson yeah absolutely and i think right now uh gerard the main thing he ran into is mike witkowski hunting him down on that ant pro yamaha which we just saw our mechanic spotlight there that was with lucas statham who actually turns wrenches for mike watkowski's yamaha machine and uh the the yamaha team they've helped me out several times in the past including just a few weeks ago as we see caleb coming into screen here but uh they actually helped me out with some parts and lucas told me he's like he said man wait until you see mike witkowski on this yamaha he said you won't believe it and uh kind of going back and forth he said it's unbelievable what he's been able to do and mike is proving that statement to be true as he moves into that xc2 there was so much confidence whenever i interviewed him this morning it wasn't cocky it wasn't arrogant nothing about it this kid really seems to like the yamaha he likes seems to like working with randy he seems to like working with the whole ampro yamaha team i mean not that he had anything bad in the past but this just seems to be something that fits him a little bit better obviously anybody that has the opportunity to work with the great like uh randy hawkins i mean heck he was already working with rodney smith i mean you can't take anything away from that but randy hawkins hall of famer man i mean you you can't take uh you gotta say that's a great golden opportunity why not try that right yep and just put it in perspective we mentioned jason reigns well jason rains actually does the yamaha demo days he travels the country and does those and that is right down the road in traveler's rest from the the ampro yamaha team and to put in perspective mike wikowski has been putting in miles and miles every day on the road bike and he's actually been living in a camper at the yamaha shop wow so he is 100 committed he is 100 in and we're seeing the the benefits of of all that labor that he's been putting in over the past few months all righty got plenty of things going on out here let's see trying to check back with some of these other classes caleb russell due in in about 10 minutes or so for a white flag ricky russell now a minute and 25 seconds behind how quickly that changed yeah absolutely and we're looking on screen here we got the graphics going through jojo cunningham on that kawasaki he was our youth overall champion last year that we mentioned and he's leading that four-stroke a-class was that josh strain we saw no that's just too far back to be josh strange josh should already be ahead of this area here so that was i'm not sure because we saw ricky going through there's uh stu baylor coming through frank okay okay this is okay okay i'm i'm i'm lost i'm sorry so that would it could have been exactly what we were expecting so russell russell strang in third stu baylor in fourth and i think jordan ashburn should be checking in here soon in the number five spot he had dropped about 30 seconds back behind stu baylor on the 127 machine i don't know if he had an issue maybe a crash a mechanical problem i don't know what the case may be but jordan dropping from third down to a fifth place position over the course of the last two laps or so yeah i'm interested to see what happened there i was actually speaking with jordan on his way to the starting line so he came out last year rodney at the end of the season that uh the the dust round at mason dixon and lead about seven eight there he is right there of that race as he as he comes through now so no doubt that jordan has a speed he has the ability uh not sure why he dropped down a couple positions there but it looks like he's on the hunt to try to reclaim his spot back we'll head down in charge and trying to make things happen right now as we take a look at some of our uh amateur classes as you look there on the left there four laps complete for our senior a40 plus class smiling frank messina leading that one that guy won the championship last year from not mistaken also mr ryan in the number two spot jim stoles is third larry sylvia in the number four spot then jimmy miranda in the number one spot of the open b bank class that you're checking out there jonathan mcgee the 726. he's running second we just saw on the other side of the finish line area these riders come up out of the woods through a couple chicanes and back in we saw josh strang come by just a moment ago but stu baylor has made up some time now josh came by less than 10 seconds ago as stu baylor is in hot pursuit as he heads into the woods he is almost close enough to smell josh strange he's getting ready to say he smells it i mean he's he's like an old blood hell man he gets he gets on your trail and starts tracking it's all over man it's it's uh it's it's gone it's on so this is going to be good there is grant baylor now it looks like grant may have made up a little bit of time himself not as far back it appears as what we've seen him in the past now that still might be back as far as 10th or 11th place there is mike wikowski checking in now that's your sixth place overall right so grant physically in the lead are not in the lead but physically in front of whitkowski right now which would probably put grant baylor in seventh place if i'm not mistaken in the xc1 class but he's all the way back in 12th after the time adjustments from the xc2 250 pro class and those guys got up front early as josh excuse me as jordan ashford makes his way so this is that same backside of finish line that we just saw teammate josh string and then stu baylor go through as jordan makes his way through now got the team green kawasaki guys out there throwing pip boards so both of these guys in hot pursuit like you mentioned don't know what happened with jordan but it looks like he is uh well on his way to closing that gap and getting back up there in the mix well that this is the one thing that he needs to do i mean seeing him fade off like that if he can strike back and push back and k and even if he doesn't catch uh josh strang but or uh stu baylor who's ahead of him if he can gain time on him i think it's a lesson learned and a plus and a positive as far as this race day is concerned yeah i mean i i think uh coming out at round one you cannot win the championship here at round one no matter how hard you try you got 12 more rounds after you could lose it you can lose it you can let it slip away which we may have seen that happen from a couple of our riders they're the only thing they can hope for is stellar results for the rest of the season and maybe some misfortune for some others yeah and it kind of stinks resorting to that especially when you start to think about the rockstar energy husqvarna team they got bollinger out bollinger i think underwent surgery either this past week or he'll be going under surgery this coming week as we take a look here at lane michael he's the next pro rider that we saw go through there lane looking like he's on the edge so uh he came through there hop skipping and bouncing so i think he's really trying to to dig in here and make his way back up through the pack but yeah he's sixth place in in class right now again he's 10th overall but sixth place in class he's a minute and 22 seconds behind jordan ashburn physically on the racetrack right now as we look at adjusted time right now wikowski is looking at two hours and five minutes and 38 seconds whenever he checked in and lane michael looking at two hours and six minutes and 13 seconds so really uh well 38 that's about a 36 second 32 second uh difference 30 35 or so seconds difference i'm in quick math i could figure it out if i stopped long enough but nonetheless plus 30 seconds anyway somewhere around there somewhere around there so uh that's not too much to make up for lane michael especially if he finds a little breath of fresh air here late in the in the race and one thing i know and mike wikowski has been an amazing trainer as well and it's going to come down to fitness i think in this last lap and a half laughing a quarter whatever's left here it's going to be the fitness level and the one thing that lane does have on his side that he is very fit the thing that he has working against him is so is mike wikowski so on adjusted time you know if they're fighting for that overall position on adjusted time yeah and and as we mentioned earlier those guys obviously being teammates they've been training together uh they both know exactly how hard to push each other and they're used to riding with each other like this so maybe if they can link up there physically they can use each other to help push into farther up into the overalls as we're taking a look here at the fmf power point can't quite see the number place there i think that's one of our amateur riders heads looking at the 258 bike class on the left side there when we look at the leaderboard we see that jonathan johnson's little brother brodie johnson also riding for the phoenix honda team leading in the 258 class so phoenix boys are doing pretty good today i haven't heard a lot about heath harrison yet though as we just looked there mike wilkowski and lane michael just going up the hill wheel to wheel so we were kind of just alluding to that a second ago they have linked up together there no doubt they're going to be pushing each other we saw grant baylor make his way up the hill just before that so these riders are attacking this hill climb and i gotta say given this land an opportunity to heal over the past year it looks like that was johnny drawer right there your second place xc2 rider and there is evan smith on the 347 now uh evan is is not running in third in xc2 he's actually broken a bone in his hand he had 30 minutes on his bike in the year of 2020 coming into this race so that kid is tall he's tall and he's tough i can't believe he's out there racing i saw his hand on the starting line for the 10 o'clock race man i couldn't pick up a drink let alone go out there and race a motorcycle for three hours so that's determination right there that's hunger desire will i mean and that's the love of what you do yep and evan i think is one of those guys that was in the mix for this xc2 title i mean it's kind of been a dominant run in that xc2 class we saw trevor bollinger win it in 2016 2017 it was josh toth coming out of nowhere and taking the win there and then obviously we saw ben kelly win two in a row last year one of the most dominant xc2 seasons we've ever seen and so it's kind of always been a clear-cut front runner in recent years and now i think that xc2 class is wide open i think you got guys like johnny jarrar mike witkowski craig delong uh jonathan johnson and i think evan smith as well as liam draper who we haven't heard much from of today i think between those guys every weekend we're gonna be saying every single one of those guys names because you don't know who's gonna win i'm i think you're right another name i think we ought to throw in there as the season wears on is of course jesse ansley yep yeah jesse anthony's gonna be one to keep an eye on throughout the course of this year we already mentioned uh evan smith but uh cody barnes cody barnes coming up from the xc3 class he's riding on a beta uh i think he's gonna be one to watch as well yeah absolutely i don't know how i forgot about cody i was talking to him earlier he said man i'm excited he couldn't wait to get out on that track but yeah just as you said he was in that xc3 class jesse ainsley kind of the same situation in xc3 he's won the last two and now he moves up into xc2 leaving that xc3 class kind of open but jesse he won the youth overall and then he won a couple 200a championships and now he's been racing xc3 so he's pretty much spent all of his career on a two-stroke so now he's on that four-stroke uh ktm and he's moving into that xc2 class and i think it's only a matter of time before he really figures that bike out and before he's up there whoa as we got a kawasaki rider trying to take the short line across the creek bouncing up and over i can't see the numbers on his bike that's an amateur writer i don't see the numbers either it looks green grass 178 double check here i think that could be yeah that was linden snodgrass so lyndon snodgrass just got the call rodney a couple weeks before the season started to come over from australia and get a ride with this team green kawasaki team he's been staying with fellow aussie josh string so coming out here and so far he is lighting the world of off-road up on fire i mean it's been insane what linden has come out here and do and this is his first test at the three hour and uh that creek got it well just to give you an idea we to mention the names we talked about the names in the xc2 class that we expect to see as caleb russell makes his way now through another section we're near the end of another lap of racing but wikowski jarrar delong jonathan johnson lyndon snodgrass in fifth cody barnes and six liam draper and seventh ryder leblanc and eight evan smith and ninth and looks like devlin in the number 10 spot jesse ansley by the way 12th place in this xc2 250 class uh i'm sure he and many others might have expected more out of him but like you said switching from a two-stroke from his whole career into it now onto a four-stroke a little bit of adjustment that he's gonna have to make under race pace i think yep and caleb russell heading down here down vp fuels pro row he had a pit board i couldn't quite see what it said on it but jesse ainsley he's native to florida so he's been down there riding in the sand as have a lot of these riders but our next stop is going to be in the sands of florida and i think that's when we're going to see jesse ainsley have his first kind of breakout in that xc2 class but uh trying to figure out the bike here and obviously been riding a little bit different soil could play a role in it but no doubt like i said once he gets more comfortable with the changes i think he'll be running up front there as well as we're sitting here looking back at the shot waiting for ricky russell to come into frame i think he'll be the the next rider that we see here on our racer tv broadcast i'm watching right now trying to sort this out is do baylor going to make a podium position i know right now that josh strang is riding a dream ride that he's been dreaming of riding for quite some time i mean this is one i mean we've seen josh i think on the podium late last year like you said but this is one of the more consistent stronger rides i think i've seen out of josh and in quite some time not that we haven't seen strong rides out of them before but they just haven't been consistent enough to keep him in in a great position throughout the entire race like what we're witnessing here today in the opening round yeah and i think a big part of that too is josh i mean coming off not this past year but the year previous uh an australian isde world championship he was part of that gold medal team down there and he's no doubt got the sprint speeds and i think between a few of the injuries he's been battling and then also changing over to that kawasaki as we mentioned kawasaki coming back into off-road uh it's been jordan ashburn and josh strang so i think between time off the bike and uh getting used to everything changing we uh i think josh is finally now putting it all together as we see ricky russell coming down pit row here and caleb russell coming into the finish line chicanes as ricky towery drops the white flag signifying one lap left to go here we go here we go as ricky would say ricky towery have you ever heard of that's one of my favorite lines oh trouble from caleb russell going around the turn swaps out both feet roddy flying off of the bike over the seat but in caleb russell fashion he saves it looks back shakes his head and off into the woods he goes i mean how often do you see those things happen out there i mean we don't get a chance to on racer tv but you listen to those guys they talk about things like that all the time and and to see him do it and at that speed and still be able to recover the way that that's impressive stuff going on right there impressive it it makes no sense to me if you go stand out in the woods if you haven't had an opportunity to come out to a gncc it looks like we got a replay that we got of uh of caleb russell here so let's take a look at how this is all gonna work out coming through i mean whoa he just got a little more air and cocked sideways i think he was like leaned over getting ready for the turn and wasn't necessarily expecting to get the air off of that one scrubbing off the breaking bumps there it looked like [Laughter] accidentally i think honestly i think he was just trying to set up for the turn and got the air that he wasn't expecting but that was a pretty uh pretty neat little slip up but also very impressive on how he was able to keep his momentum moving forward and keep the machine upright at the same time still waiting on second place position ricky russell to check in 25 seconds back is what we were looking at a lap ago and i think tyler you're saying that you think that's him right there just checked in hey i believe that is who we're looking at right here is the coastal racing husqvarna of ricky russell on the 212. i'm seeing a two at the beginning and our drone is following it so i do believe that is ricky yeah that's him i'm pretty sure too so um is that gap still a minute and 25 seconds he has lost even more time it's now a minute and 46 seconds it didn't seem like that long but i guess the little swap out the replay and stuff like that kind of shorten our time span up in our mind but wow a minute and 46 seconds russell is still gaining two hours excuse me two hours and 30 minutes 57 seconds and whenever he checked in for the fifth lap complete remember what we said about this is going to be like an exact three-hour race 30 minutes and eight seconds so right now if caleb stays on this same pace 30 minutes and eight seconds or 10 seconds or so it's going to be like three hours and a minute and 15 seconds or something like that i mean that is pretty phenomenal uh how consistent they've been able to turn those laps that close to 30 minute lap times yeah and one thing that i didn't find out until later in my racing career is that uh they actually take the first couple laps and then ricky towery are our scoring official out there uh he actually takes the average of those times and then then they determine how long or how many laps the race is going to be and it looks like he hit this one right on the head as you said we might end up right at the three hour mark yeah there's a lot of things to to to take into consideration when you're sorting that stuff out but uh yeah the guys and ricky and all the folks down at scoring and timing do an amazing job of getting that all sorted out right now as we watch our yamaha sky cam and we wait patiently here as we roll through the final lap caleb russell has checked in ricky russell has checked in another couple minutes before we'll see josh strang and stu baylor who are within about 20 seconds of each other now there is josh drain checking in on the 114 and let's just stick right here for just a moment before we go to break and and see where stu baylor is in this hunt as we said last time around it was about 25 seconds on the clock uh of timing and scoring i have it at about 20 and the last time i saw him so we'll know now whether or not stu's been losing or gaining even more time regardless it's been an impressive ride in the first run out on a sureco today no matter what happens from this point on for stu baylor and the sureco team they've made an amazing presence out here and amazing push in the opening round of gncc like you said roddy no matter what happens from this point forward shurco has proved that they are here and they are ready to do battle with the best of them one thing when josh strang was going through that corner we saw his uh one of his mechanics trying to hand him a water bottle he actually missed that grab which that is that is a heart breaking gut wrenching feeling when you miss that bottle going into the last lap especially when you got stu baylor on that sureco machine hot on the heels looking to make the pass in the third but uh stu baylor is now 16 seconds we didn't we were watching uh uh i believe we were watching the 114 uh making his way around there a few moments ago but uh right there stu baylor with 16 seconds 16 seconds so he gained 10 seconds over the last lap looking at lap times now as we put this into perspective a 10 second faster lap 16 seconds behind if it stays this pace he'll finish just behind josh string by about six seconds but i have to think once he gets him in the sight once we get into the left traffic the gloves are off these two are going to be going at it and it's going to be old school g and cc out there these guys are really likely going to get physical out there in the woods not to the point where they're going to beat each other up but they're going to be going against each other hard and both of these guys want that top three spot out there today i think josh wants it for redemption purposes stu wants it for a lot of good reasons and that is to prove that the move to sherko was a smart move on his point yeah just like you said rodney i mean each one of these guys wants it a lot and it's going to come down to this last lap and as you mentioned you can look at the the paces and everything before but once they come around and see that white flag and know that there's 14 miles or so between them and that checkered flag it just goes into a whole another gear and traditionally what the stew baylor do is the race goes on it's like a diesel just comes on stronger exactly he just gets faster and stronger as the race wears on and if he if he's consistent oh he looks like he's down right here oh that's grand baylor yep yep grant baylor uh down on the 314 machine grant seems to be uh riding uh strong as well not as strong as i'm sure he would like to but nonetheless still keeping a solid top 10 position out there in the xc1 pro class and that's saying a lot for both these uh both these uh circos out there brand new machine unproven in the xc1 class i'm not going to say they're unproven in gncc like i said they do have some championships and some amateur classes so we know that they they know how to go in the woods but they've never had the baylor boys on them so they're proven to hold up man i think we might have a a pretty bulletproof machine out of these sureco machines after all yep absolutely and i mean just looking down pro row it was just a few years ago when there was only two and sometimes three factory haulers on pro row looking at it now we got honda bringing in a factory effort we got kawasaki bringing in a factory effort shurco bringing in factory effort i mean it just keeps adding and growing and i mean you couldn't ask for anything more than growth of the sport caleb russell ricky russell josh strang stu baylor jordan ashburn your top five back in the number six spot overall is mike wikkowski leading the xc250 pro class will he be able to break the top five himself today what's going to happen in that battle tyler shepherdson and johnny gallagher as our monster can dances for the riders as they make their way through the monster mile here is um almost taunting them i think as they head into that section through this uh part of the racetrack two hours from 43 working on 44 minutes into this about 16 minutes out 17 or so minutes out from seeing a checkered flag and anticipated checkered flag with caleb russell if he continues at the pace that he's running at right now ricky russell running second josh strength third but closing in slowly is sue baylor looking at the lap times according to what we've seen right now josh should have stu covered as far as that third place position but as we pointed out once uh stu gets uh uh gets eyesight all all bets are off at that point and stu's gonna definitely dig deep so we'll see whether or not that's going to be the case jordan ashburn is still back in fifth mike watkowski six grant baylor seventh overall lane michael's up to eighth overall now and that makes him seventh in class still so we've seen some some pretty good transitions there it looks like for for lane michael as he was able to move back up into a top 10 position there here late in the race and hopefully he'll be able to take that and not be bumped out of it by um johnny gerard or craig along there i know that uh still waiting on them to update on my score system here now they may have already been through and if so i do apologize and that may have changed already but lane's still putting down some laps and laying down some law out there i think yeah absolutely and also looking at our graphic over there on the side our fmf xc3 class looks like jason raines made his way back to the front and caleb russell that that number one on his bike seems a little bit bigger and a little bit bolder than it has in recent years it's uh it's a pretty wide one he's got on there but he comes through the monster mile nevertheless and uh working his way through i know the the end is inside about 15 minutes to go before caleb russell starts to make his way to the finish line here at round number one been an impressive day and i have to ask you tyler anything like what you expected uh yes and no i mean obviously the the big story is thad duvall and ben kelly i mean that has been the one that has been able to run with caleb consistently and even still wins away from him and then ben kelly does what he did in xc3 couple overall podiums moves up to xc1 at the end of last year wins the last two races so i kind of expected that battle to to be a little bit heavier um but obviously very unfortunate as uh injuries coming into the round ended up plaguing them but other than that i mean yeah it's it's uh it's been it's been a tough race and that's really what i expected coming into is how tight that race is going to get especially in that xc2 class and then stu baylor he obviously he got his first win of his career at big buck a couple years ago first round and then last year he came out and won the first round down in florida so he's always strong in these first races as well so it does not surprise me at all that he is battling for a podium as we speak out there and johnny gallagher same question any surprises in this opening round for you you know yeah actually there's a few rodney and as i'm looking down here just basically looking at the at the top 10 or top 15 top 20 even as they currently run overall here is caleb russell coming in he is in this open section here on the other side of the finish line he's looking across the way and he's saying you know i'm almost there i'm going to see you guys in a couple minutes and and i'm going to check hopefully check off another win for himself um we're back here to the monster mile we're waiting and watching but just running down the list right to the top 20 caleb russell surprises me doesn't surprise me he's leading doesn't surprise me that he has the potential to obviously win this race there's ricky russell on screen the 212 coastal racing huss barnard rider there's a surprise right there right to me not no i didn't believe me by no means am i saying that i didn't think ricky russell was capable of winning races of podium i knew that but new team new bike switch i did not expect to see him as strong at round one as he is today i have to agree with you on that for sure and the thing that surprises me about caleb russell is the margin right now that you know the the race that he's put in and uh you know caleb normally like i said a pretty quiet guy doesn't get real enthusiastic about things but if you follow him on social media his posts have been let's just say leading the last couple posts you've made things like i'm getting ready to make a statement i'm gonna i'm gonna put some guys in the hurt locker i can't wait you know and when caleb says stuff like that you know he can come off as arrogant but i think that was a little just mental mind games and he told me the other day he said i'll tell you what i'm ready i hope they are but i don't think they are so when you hear that kind of confidence in his voice i i expected him to battle for a win i did not expect to see this margin going into the final lap uh you know to uh a win like this minute and 45 seconds plus right now that's you know that's kind of uncharted it's happened before for sure but at round one like that i mean stu baylor did it a few years ago for sure here at big buck um you know so whether or not he can back it up week to week but i didn't expect to see that i didn't expect ricky russell to be as strong as he is just running down this josh strang on the podium in third phenomenal ride great day for him in that monster energy babbitt's team um you know obviously having jordan ashburn sitting back there in fifth two riders in the top five great day for them great day for that team didn't mean to skip over stu baylor fourth place man for it you know tyler you're just pointing out battling for podium first race new machine new team and completely new machine to gncc racing um that's uh you know that's huge i mean that's a that's a big statement for him that he's here to play um coincidentally i'm just gonna warn everybody stu baylor said to me i was riding in this place on wednesday he said hey if grant and i both finish it's gonna be wild here's caleb russell up the fmf powerball sideways wow barely saves it and he is stopped on top of the hill no major sense of urgency there he's got a pretty solid lead but that could have been bad rodney yeah it could have been real bad especially whenever you got uh ricky russell so hungry back there in that number two spot there is stew is he did we see josh strain that was strange no that was stew i thought it said 114. all right it was it was a shark though yeah it was always a sure you got three four or five fourteen we must replay coming all right we're gonna see that we're gonna watch that replay of caleb russell going up that hill and we'll try to sort it out about josh strang here in just a second but look at that just i mean getting the drive and so many bumps i mean that's it looks oddly similar to his uh he was huck a buck out here after after the finish line yeah and what's hard to see on camera there's that's a rock face yeah he was sideways on that's not dirt up there um that is actually just complete shale rock you know so for him to save that that was some serious thing on the fly yeah that was two impressive saves on one lap so on camera and replayed hopefully here at the bottom of the fmf powerpoint we'll get to see like you said we'll sure to sort out that josh strength yeah ricky russell we'll see next though would be the next rider we see on screen running down the surprise of the day um you know stu baylor again battling for a podium position here on the last lap not that we didn't think his speed was there but to see is the machine hold up completely new team to gncc impressive to say the least these guys are gonna be players for a time to come grant baylor currently sitting in ninth place overall stu told me if they both finished stu was gonna disrobe and run through the pits in his birthday suit oh boy so if everybody wants to go ahead and hide your kids hodge wives is planning on getting wild if he and grant will finish this race and right now not only are they both looking to finish they said becca you're standing right here i don't think he'll actually do it but i think stu baylor is going to be on another level this evening he's going to be over the moon especially if he can put it on the podium you say that but we also have steve baylor just post race interview in his underwear in the past there's rough and rowdy up and over the top there rodney all righty now i will say this i'm going i'm starting a new podcast and we're going to start interviews i'm headed to over to the stu baylor farm tomorrow i'm heading down to amro as well as over to phoenix honda to talk some of the bike guys over there so this will be an interesting story to talk with him about coming up tomorrow for sure i'm just going to give you a little bit of advice maybe don't go to stu's tomorrow um he's going to not be feeling the greatest i think there's going to be a lot of adult beverages consumed tonight if he puts this thing on the podium maybe i'll go to stu's tonight that's a great idea if you won't have a good time but not if you want to get any quality content that being said you know another couple more surprises here real quick trying to make quick mike wikowski leading xc2 new team new machine new to a four-stroke he's killing it um not josh strang but close though green machine um mike wikowski leading xc2 that's a surprise jordan ashburn don't want to skip over him great ride in fifth place johnny gerrard coming back from a season off to be up there battling still within striking distance of the win 31 seconds back at the completion of the or at the white flag and great ride for him jonathan johnson oh new team phoenix honda racing those guys have put so much effort into this team this year and jonathan johnson looking to today reward them with the podium um if you look back craig delong little bit of a surprise there expected him to be battling for a win back in that fourth place spot only 11 seconds out of a third place spot still potentially a podium and could even move up higher than that but a little uh disappointed in what i expected from craig based on his results coming in and how well he'd been riding um going down through another one that i'm i'm really surprised by linden snodgrass you know this guy is a world-class you know sprinter um to see him out there in xc2 um i mean he was in many of the tests at the at the sprint enduro two weekends ago he was second fastest to caleb in fractions of a second off he was second overall for most of the first day um there is that looks to be josh strang you are right tyler we missed him there is string the 114 machine um there he is look at him i tell you what great day for him he's he's got to be pretty pleased with uh the way things are going and again that right line's getting sketchy yeah it is look at this guy here he is the 514 the blood's in the water and the shark is on the hunt he can see strength different line no time lost up the hill for him there man talk about momentum up that hill i think he might have gained a second or at least a half second on josh strange just going up that hill right there yeah for sure coming into this last lap go ahead coming into this last lap rodney what we talked about is that 30 second gap that uh was in between uh stu baylor and josh drang and as you can see that is now closed up yeah we're down it was down to 16 went from 30 to 16 and now it's closed up i think even tighter than that johnny on on what you're saying i have to say ditto uh all the surprises that you're talking about are the surprises i will say this i kind of expected maybe and not that he hasn't done well today but i kind of expected that we were going to see the uh 127 of jordan ashburn maybe battling a little more solid for a podium position i don't know why it was something about late last year that really turned me on to what jordan ashburn has going on yeah but man i mean this class is so tough right now and it's it's all about being an on day jordan you know was up front running a third place spot much of the day uh riding solidly i think you know jordan's gonna improve as the season goes and for him to come out if he keeps it in the top five overall i think you know i think that's a phenomenal race one uh huge improvements for that monster energy babbitt's kawasaki team from last year and uh really pumped to have them here and their great interjection into the series obviously second year back um but man so many new teams so many new rides so many new riders and uh it's it's just so awesome to see it all unfold here today um you know one one other surprise um like i said lyndon snodgrass uh part of that australian trophy team that actually won the world trophy a few years ago this year he was on the junior team that won the junior world trophy i mean this guy i'm not going to lie i expected him to be leading the way in xc2 really um i really did it's nothing against obviously uh any of the other guys that that are doing so well today watkowski gerard johnson delong all those guys i knew they were going to be contenders but i expected lyndon snodgrass to be up there leading the way at the very least early in the race sprinting away from those guys didn't happen today not to say that it still may not but a little little underwhelmed with with his performance here today i do believe this might be his first actual like cross-country race here in the states though so it's different um it's a completely different dynamic here is jordan ashburn so still in that fifth place spot for the number 127 machine and a great ride for him today for sure for sure for sure and about 14 minutes little less than 14 minutes we should be expecting to see caleb russell nearing the finish line ready to capture checkers for win number 61 in his illustrious career and of course embarking upon championship number eight here there was your xc2 leader mike wikowski the 282 here is grant baylor so baylor now up to baylor now up to sixth in that xc2 class or xc1 class and uh physically seventh overall i think he's running ninth on time correction at last check i gotta give grant baylor a tip of the hat on that one he went like he was gonna go the right side and then crossed over to the left side of that hill michael's had some struggle there don't know he did end up making it but lane michael really struggled on the left side and he is within striking distance of of grant baylor there so he is seventh physically in that xc1 class and and i think uh 10th overall on uncorrected time as we're looking at it we'll see how that plays out with those xc2 guys that's always a always a shuffle there at the end of the day to see where those guys fall in i think actually lane is and now down to an 11th place position so there has been a few little changes there but when you look at it it's not by much right now so we'll wait and see what stories unfold here and what uh things unfold as far as this last lap of racing is concerned is this one of our xc3 riders here here no this is uh this is a lap rider but i'll tell you one other thing i'm looking at here our screen currently shows jordan ashburn fifth overall mike wikowski sixth based on the gap when they came by mike watkowski has eaten into that gap jordan ashburn had and he is going to be physically our he's physically sixth and is going to be um fifth on corrected time i do believe now here comes those phoenix honda boys that was there is the 342 uh and that is craig delong that's why i've been missing to long all day no wonder i've been wondering who that was all day i mean i knew craig but um yeah missed him so there's de long so it looks like he is now behind right on johnson uh johnny gerard was just ahead of them so that battle still continues that's two three and four in the xc2 class and rodney nothing worse than that i mean good in a way but you know one of those three guys is going to be off the podium right there and they're all within sight of each other they've worked so hard 180 minutes pushing it to the limit and you cross that finish line one of them is going to be just off the podium and that's going to be very inspiring for one of them i think as well so i mean this right here opened up a pretty nice can of worms as far as the competition you know i i've been saying it all weekend uh a year of change you know a new decade a new era in gncc and i think that my proof my point may be starting to be proved right here at the first round and that's just in the results that we're watching here today again it's just the first round lots of crazy things can happen and this change that i'm talking about it's not going to be instant but i think we're witnessing the beginning of it right now i agree with you rodney a lot of changes going on and uh and one other thing to say about mike witkowski um you know i'm going to be honest with him this didn't really pop into my mind until just now you know tyler you can say with your podcasts and you know all this stuff there's a lot of off-season chatter everybody's talking who's going to do well how are they going to adapt to the new bike and i'm not going to lie to you i i although i think a lot of people were expecting good things out of mike wikowski i don't think he was even on the list of five guys that people thought were gonna win round one and xc2 i really i really don't think that i i'm going to say now mike i expected a strong performance out of it honestly i'm going to say i did i expected really i did that's the one thing on the list of surprises that you were talking about that didn't surprise me i kind of anticipated that and you know one reason is um especially after talking with him earlier today caleb russell on screen coming through this is it folks he is coming to vp fuels pro row get out on the edges if you call my post a month or so ago when caleb announced his uh pending retirement i said if you haven't made it out to a gncc recently or even if you have make sure you make it out though this one at least one this year as caleb russell has announced he will be done racing gncc full-time or racing full-time at the end of 2020 and this is what you need to see this guy is pure grit pure determination and he puts it all out there for two hours and you're getting to witness it right here right now in the neighborhood of three minutes left to go here before the checkered flag flies and win number 61 for caleb russell as he makes his way down the vp fuels pro row watching high above from the yamaha racing sky cam caleb russell on his way to write another page of history and set the standard for the 2020 season as he's going to be the one to beat once again for another championship so johnny gallagher making his way down toward the podium in the finish line region and he should be uh ready to capture our winner here in just a few moments talk to caleb russell talk to ricky russell we'll be second and of course josh strang who we anticipate to be the third place position but again that one's still up in the air we got stu baylor back there and we don't know what's going to unfold there will still be able to bridge the gap make the pass on josh string the gap seemed to be a little larger than what i expected it to be from the lap previous so maybe stu's lost a little bit of time this time but regardless stellar day it may not be a number one win in the win column and a w in the win column for stu baylor but for sharko this and stu baylor in this new program a huge win as they will finish a solid top five today in a fourth place position and a second rider in the top ten with grant baylor back in the ninth place position of the overall but i think he's like seventh or eighth in the uh xc1 pro class and we see ricky russell going through frame right now still holding down that second place spot and rodney last time we saw the battle between josh strang and stu baylor for that third place spot was at the hill climb where they were down a lot but here comes caleb there it is folks caleb russell fist in the air as he makes his way through the finish line chicane just a few more turns and wins 61 belongs to caleb brussels he takes the vp fuels big buck gncc wow mercy sakes alive my friends look at that i mean so calm so cool and you know caleb's not usually a celebrator or anything like that but i think he's feeling it he wants to feel every moment this year he wants to soak it in and why not and of course second and third place position should be making their way in here in just a few moments ricky russell josh strang or stu baylor who's he going to be we were within 10 seconds i believe yeah i said it stretched out but i'm wrong it was down to 10 seconds so stu had actually started closing that gap up on josh string there as we look into the eyes of what appears to be a rider on his eighth national championship look at that what i mean other than the two little miscues that we saw him out there we think he had his perfect day out there but he's got his shirt ripped again so obviously bumping into a tree catching a branch or something like that out there that's uh that's the way it goes for a gnc seer man and a lot of miles out there 12 14 miles of racetrack out there today i mean there's so many obstacles these these riders have got to contend with throughout the course of the day uh here's our first sight of josh string coming through camera as we're panning back looking over the 5 14 of stu baylor in hot pursuit don't see it don't see it going on just yet so i think that or did he go by i thought that was him that went by okay maybe he did maybe he did i apologize to you i was looking a little further back there was a couple of bikes that i may have missed right there now you got me confused i thought i saw him going on the outside of those two lappers there it no i mean you very well could have my i need new glasses i still need new glasses from last year i said i needed new glasses and i do but regardless we'll know more here in just a few moments ricky russell though working it through the checkered flag in the second place position and third place position is what we're waiting on right now we're looking for the 114 of josh strang to check in with that third place position now as we wait with baited breath here and the finish line region now and what is going to be a very historical year of gncc racing and to post yourself on the top in this first round of racing is a an amazing performance in this day of racing in this era of racing and the way things are unfolding here for this new season ricky russell you can see uh the great ride there for the coastal team he's doing a lot of bench races you can tell he had a lot of fun out there today really enjoyed that and talking about all the swapping and stuff i mean the track really really uh given these guys quite a few obstacles so wow we still got uh we should be seeing uh third place come in here pretty soon i think right that's what i'm very interested in seeing is this this battle for third was very close behind looking to see who's it gonna be that 114 kawasaki or the 514 sureco machine this battle is coming down to the wire such big implications on the line for this final podium position ricky russell again still celebrating we're still waiting and we should be seeing this uh come through here in just a few moments and get the update on things as uh there is the 114 of jo no that's that is the 114 of josh strang all by himself there now as josh strangle do it on the babiton line monster energy team green kawasaki he'll take third place here at the opening round and not far behind you were right that was stu baylor within five seconds there at the finish line so though it wasn't a podium though it wasn't a win it was huge and monumental in the program of stu baylor and the folks there at sureco just finishing off the podium today to kick off the 2020 grand national cross country championship presented by your friends at specialized e turbo bikes an ama national championship and of course look at that you can see and that almost looks like a face of disappointment a basic disappointment where he expected hoped and wanted to be maybe even a little further up now they're cutting his jersey off and maybe although outside his jersey that's a camelback they're cutting off right there maybe just a little winded than uh a taxing day i have to think this track was brutal for these guys and and uh very challenging and let's take a break real quick we'll be back with uh podium interviews and uh winner circle interviews in just a moment [Applause] [Music] wow uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] inside every yamaha lives the heart and soul of a competitor the dna of a champion when you ride with us it revs your heart and becomes a part of you too this week in yamaha history it was the opening round of the 2009 gncc series and everyone came into florida's river ranch gncc hopeful and hungry writers like chris borge and adam mcgill were still young guns with lots to prove against the seasoned veterans of brian cook johnny ockerman chris biffle william yoakley bill ballas wayne johnson and so many more pennsylvania's chris borch who was just beginning to pave his road to greatness jumped out to the early lead soon the then number three of adam mcgill found his way around and into the lead and looked ready to capture a huge opening round win however lurking in the shadows working his way into third place yamaha's taylor kaiser was in hot pursuit by race's end taylor kaiser had made the pass and amassed a one minute and 13 second lead over the rest of the field this gave kaiser his one and only win that season but setting the stage for many more battles for the top spot in gncc and that's this week in yamaha history you see live here on racertv.com rodney tomlin tyler jefferson johnny gallagher down near the winner's circle as he gets set to talk to our overall winners today all right folks we're here with caleb russell today's winner round one 2020. caleb some semi-bold predictions some might say on social media here recently making comments about making people hurt and making people pay came out today backed it up and uh grabbing a win number 61. how's it feel to start off with the season for a win and what were the intentions coming into today yeah there's no way i was gonna lose my last first race ever so i put the hammer down and got the whole shot led wire to wire felt really good i came in really prepared i was um you know been dialed in the last seven weeks and just training hard working hard finally coming to you know the season 100 healthy and ready to go and i feel like i'm back on 2015 forum where uh you know the race comes to me easy i'm you know felt real really good at the beginning and really solid and i i just kept a pace and uh that i i thought would wear those guys down and um i just i just held that pace uh through the whole race basically so i didn't try to like manipulate it and you know hang back and uh wait for the end you know i just went straight from the get-go just a really solid solid pace that i knew would be tough to hang on to and uh was able to pull it in so about that you said your last first race you made the announcement for those watching at home that haven't heard that this will be your last full-time season at least of competition does that change your mindset at all for this 21 2020 season or is just business as usual for caleb russell yeah it's just business as usual um you know i'm here to try to win and do the best i can just because it's my last last season doesn't mean i'm gonna take it easy if anything it's gonna you know fire me up and uh you know make me work a little harder which which i feel like i have so um awesome day awesome weekend i'm uh it's gonna be bittersweet at the end of the year but uh it's uh it's been an awesome career and uh like i said it's my last big buck and uh happy to go out on top this place is awesome i gotta thank uh henry turner for always letting us come out and doing a great job with this place i really like it and gonna miss it for sure so getting the win today one thing that uh you know i think surprised a lot of people at home was how strong ricky russell was early obviously thad deval was giving you a little bit of pressure at the beginning but you were able to kind of break away from him and it was tough for us to see but that first lap that the spotters kept telling us that duval right on him thaddeval that wasn't bad that was ricky there on the first lap were you a little bit surprised to see him hang with you for the first part of the race or were you expecting him to be fast today uh yeah i was expecting ricky to be fast you know he was fasting last year on the yamaha and i knew uh maybe a little smaller bike that 350 might suit him a little bit better and he's kind of coming in as a rider you know he's he's turning around as a rider so he's definitely you know stronger better he works hard so um yeah i wasn't super surprised he's built like i said he's been uh you know he rides good so i'm happy to see some new guys up there cool and like i said we'll just try to keep doing our own thing and set that base well there you go folks the changing the guard may be on the way but it's not today the man that's been on top for many years on top again today win number 61 wins the season opener in dominating fashion nearly two minutes and uh congrats and we'll see on the podium here in a few thanks well i tell you what pretty impressive stuff there caleb russell coming in making that statement and some of the comments he made there during that interview pretty stellar uh my favorite one there's no way i was going to lose my first my last first race and uh that that's that's that obviously you know means a lot to him let's head on down to the winner's circle for second place ricky russell phenomenal day for you here big bucks season opener 2020 getting the season off started on really on the right foot battling for the win for much of the race with caleb russell coming into solid second place position new team new bike new you how about it tell us about the day from your perspective yeah no doubt i got an awesome start by our top three actually then i got behind caleb pretty soon thad uh had a big spill in front of me unfortunately i hope he's okay i heard he might have hurt his knee again that was no fun but um anyways just caught back up to caleb after that and just kind of we were just kind of going and picking smooth lines and i didn't feel like i was overriding or doing anything crazy and like felt good i was just able to kind of cruise there and then i kind of forgot we didn't know our mileage at the top because we haven't uh raced this bike yet and we pit early two laps in and i lost side of caleb for a little bit and i was trying to give a good push to get back to him because i knew he had to pit that lap and then uh fortunately i had one lap with two big spills within one mile hit my head pretty hard and i was like okay cool down man just ride your own race you got a good gap on third and just try to pick off laps and hopefully come in for the podium and that's what we did so super stoked the bike i had a super stressful day yesterday we had a couple little minor issues and team worked their butts off all night all morning to get the bike ready to go i think timmy and barry for making it happen and making obviously the bike worked awesome and able to come away with second well if this is ricky russell on the first ride on this new team in this new machine how much stronger do you feel you can get throughout 2020 i ran the goal is to keep getting better and we're only one position from being where i want to be so just uh we're going to keep pushing and like i said uh this is the first setting of suspension i've had on this bike and i've i've been stoked with it so just just jiving with the bike up really good and it showed today absolutely so there you have it folks ricky said he's only just gonna keep getting better and better if second place is the starting point there's only one more spot to go from there well congratulations to ricky russell uh stellar ride like johnny said coming in on a new bike new team and everything but at the same time like caleb russell said he's a smaller bike might fit his style a little bit better so he wasn't too surprised out there so uh wow what a day for both those riders and how about it for this rider good to see josh strange back on mark and let's head on down to the uh the winner's circle once again all right josh strang third place overall today coming in you know last season a lot of questions you had some good races some not so good races um but the team looks really strong this year you guys came out swinging you and jordan both running in the top five there you guys battling over that third place position what did it take to get up there run in that podium spot and get a good start to the season like this and basically how'd the race go in your words today yeah this is a uh i mean compared to the last few years this is the perfect start for me so uh finish on the box uh not too bad so uh the start of the race i kind of just settled in behind a couple of guys where i probably should have tried to make a couple of passes earlier maybe i could have stayed a little closer to uh i guess uh caleb and ricky the two russells so uh um but now overall man i had a good day the track is probably the best one of the best big buck dirt wise we've had in man i think we worked out on the weekend it's my 14th season so i've been at it nearly as long as you so uh the dirt here was good this place always gets rough and it was rough today a lot of people turned up which is good for gene to see you know there's heaps of people coming racing uh we get we all get to keep our jobs and that and i had a blast actually uh i just tried to enjoy the race there was some people on the side of the track i was yelling at and having some fun with and uh when the lapis would get out of the way i'd give them a kui say thanks and uh overall i mean it was good so i had a fun fun day and it's good to start with the third place man uh i see thad crashed early so there's a couple other guys out but i think i i have a speed i just need to put put the star the race together and i can be up there every weekend i reckon no you definitely look good today and you know as a former champion in this series you know you can't win the championship at round one but you sure can lose it and uh for you to come out of here with the podium today i gotta imagine i don't know what your goals were coming into today but uh you know you can if you can keep making improvements from here you know really put you in contention for wins going forward and i'm sure that's the goal right yeah i mean like i said i've been at it for almost 14 years now and and at this stage i'm i'm just here i like to have fun i want to do good and i put in the hard work during the during the weekend before the season and i i'm at the point where i i can still be competitive and get good results and podiums and hopefully wins but at the end of the day i want to have fun doing this and uh and that's what i did today i mean i had a blast and and i want to sell kawasaki so uh last year was the first year back for babaton line uh the kawasaki team and and already this year you can see more kawasaki's around the air around the pits at the races so i feel like we're doing our job and the bikes are the bikes are really good they're uh they're it's it's a hard market to crack into when there's other manufacturers here that are really strong but i believe the kawasaki's uh are just as good or better than the than other brands so uh i'm excited to represent that brand and uh hopefully we can keep selling blocks and and make them make their presence bigger very cool well there you have it folks josh strang says he's just out here having fun while having fun today put him on the podium with the best off road riders in the world clearly he's there and wouldn't be surprised to see him grabbing wins here soon back to you rodney no doubt about it johnny uh pretty impressive right and now hey he sold me i want to buy a kawasaki now that's for sure josh really putting it together uh his teammate even though he finished back a couple of spots also putting a great ride together an amazing day today for the russells the two russells as as josh pointed out in josh string and of course uh stu baylor putting a great ride together in that five seconds only behind out of third place position hey mike wikowski an amazing performance by that rider today finishing i believe fifth place overall on the day and winning the xc2 250 pro lights we're here with mike winkowski new ride new team first race of the season first win of your career just in a few words how does it feel right now honestly it's surreal i never really thought i'd get to this point i honestly give all the credit to the bike and the team and pro yamaha team and uh just the 250 fx is honestly incredible um and the dunlop tires i give huge credit to you today because it's so slippery and um just it just works so good i'm i'm happy all right so mike a lot of people were that we were talking about this on the show you can go back and watch it a lot of discussion surrounding around who's going to win the opening round in xc2 who are going to be the players you're i'm going to be honest with you your name was in there as a player not many people had you pegged to win so was this a statement ride today were you letting everybody know that they better put you on their radar for the championship this year yeah definitely i mean i'd rather come in as underdog and uh just prove a point to everyone and i think we did that with a minute lead and honestly i was ready for four hours if we went um but honestly yeah it's just it's surreal um i told myself last night before i went to bed i was gonna win today and i just had that feeling you know and uh we made it happen all right well great ride today for mike witkowski first win of his xc2 career this man's been at it for a while gets the job done today in the first ride on a new bike and a new team starts off the season in a big way back to you rodney in a huge and monumental way congratulations to you too mike witkowski and wow what a day today uh tyler shepherdson want to say thanks to you for stepping in and helping out and mikey wayne's his absence in the course and we'll see you back i guess again in georgia also but uh your quick take on today's race man unbelievable track conditions unbelievable weather turned into an unbelievable day of racing i think that's what it boils down to and uh it it's it's got me it's got me giving goosebumps that round one has started and it turns out to be like this i mean everything's up in the air and it's a great season of racing coming at us it most certainly is and with that uh wow all i can say is wow a lot of big changes coming into this season we expected a lot of crazy things and exciting things to happen and we got just exactly what we were looking for look for more coming up in two weeks as we'll be heading to the the wild boar gncc in palakka florida until then everybody have a great day on behalf of all of us here at racertv.com tyler shepherdson johnny gallagher i'm rodney tomlin good day everybody you
