welcome to Ames Iowa over 55,000 that packed Jack trice Stadium for this big 12 showdown between the Texas Longhorns in the Iowa State Cyclones hello everyone i'm brian cuts alongside my partner Robert Smith and submitting this one has got some big ramifications because Iowa State needs a victory to become bowl eligible meanwhile Texas they control their own destiny if they went out they could find themselves playing in the big 12 championship game at seasons in in the long Lawrence they're gonna rely on the arm of the man who has the most touchdown passes in the conference and a wide receiver who's one of the best in the country yeah and they're not just gonna rely on that arm of Sam Ehlinger though this guy is an absolute tank so he's dangerous running the football as well more than four hundred yards rushing on the season he does throw the ball extremely well and the way that I've described it he's like a more accurate version of Tim Tebow a very versatile player he's got a great weapon on the outside Devin Duvernay he's built like a running back 5 foot 11 210 pounds very prolific catcher 11 catches in the second half alone against LSU you know I love talking to track guy yeah you do 10 to 7 state champion in 100-meter dash in the state of Texas Wow they got that speed in Texas meanwhile the Cyclones will listen they got the big 12 passing leader and a dynamic freshman running back yeah and Brock Purdy has been great this year fifth in the nation in total often so he can run the ball as well he's done a really good job most of the time take tear up the football this season I think that's what you're going to need to see from him today Todd Orlando the defensive coordinator for Texas is really going to change the looks up rock Bernie has got to do a very good job of making decisions one of the decisions it's easy hand it off to this guy Griese Hall didn't start the beginning of the year but look at those numbers over the last four games that's fit among FBS running backs in that time spans been great to watch that young man fell and right there Texas in third in the big 12 and then Iowa State here right at 500 looking for another victory to become bowl eligible it's 49 degrees here at Ames by the way since the start of the 2014 season Texas is only played in five games with temperature under 50 degrees at kickoff last time they play the game at kickoff with the temperature under 40 degrees was December 7th of 2013 in Waco while the last time they practice it it was earlier this week though it was cold down there in Austin I live in Dallas you know the wind chill got into the you know the low teens like even down 12 at some point so they were practicing in some cold weather I would say won the toss they defer paddock to kick in Texas will start at their own 25 and here comes Sam I am Ehlinger Austin native Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist tied for second in career TD passes with 60 he needs just 52 yards of pass Vince young for second all-time in passing at UT and he is thrown or run for a touchdown in 16 straight games I love the picture of him throwing up the horns when he's like 2 years old this guy a UT guy born and lots been made about this Iowa State defense defense coordinator John Hancock the three-man front and people say how can you have a three-man front against a big line like that we're going to talk about that defensive structure a lot today they get a lot of extra bodies up in that front to slow it on the run Devon Duvernay is in the slot Ehlinger to the outside complete come Marcus Washington but incomplete bowels it was a good throw there by Ehlinger rose it on rhythm or the receiver turns around just hits him right off of the chest plate there I got to get those hands on that thing can't let it get in all the way to your chest plate once it hits that chest plate bang it's bouncing off so krishna gar will Punk things away tarik milton is back deep for Iowa State standing at his own 35 [Music] fair catch is cold you can see how the wind blowing at 15 to 20 miles an hour here in Ames it's going to come into play here 31 yard punt so Iowa State now will take over here comes the sophomore the big 12 passing leader Robert and Brock Purdy six nationally in the country in passing to four career high five TVs last week against Oklahoma he averages Basu 310 yards passing no Iowa State quarterback he's ever averaged over 300 yards passing per game and the Cyclones go with three tight ends and here's Greece all touchback Joseph osai makes the stop but not before the six yard pickup and Iowa State offense one of the biggest weapons is at the tight end Charlie Kohler flees the team of TV catches he scored at least one touchdown and eats up the last three games this is Hall again left side he's got a first down and more Ami's in Longhorn territory JaJuan Mitchell makes the stop and then long horn defense it's big it's fast is led by their senior defensive end Malcolm Roach coaches called him their best defensive player but it's on the back end they're kept in Brandon Jones leads the team in tackles plays safety sometimes you'll find him in the nickel as well and that Texas defense has struggled at times this year but remember they had a lot of turnover from the team allotted from a year ago nine new faces on that defense and a lot of injuries in the secondary Paul on the right side another six yard pickup two Quan Graham makes the stop so far they've bid Hall in the freshman 7 yards seven yards and now six they've really done a great job up front Iowa State you talked about the size and that defense in front for Texas Iowa State has controlled the line of scrimmage they've done a good job getting the tight ends moving them around and getting them involved in the run game second and four hurting the pass to the outside Pitt way makes the catch and it's a first down does Sean Jameson with the stop another seven-yard pickup for the Cyclones that's coordinator Tom Manning he's done a nice job here bang-bang-bang with the run and then the throw outside to Pettway really mixing things up and he knew he was going to need to do that today and he knows that that guy right there Proc Purdy he's gonna have to be involved with to be run at some point Charlie Kohler we talked about and he's at the top of your screen now in motion [Applause] and they go to three tight ends party to pass down the sea and he overthrows tarik Milton three Saul was able to make the block on that one on our side and that's a match up the top manning said the offensive coordinator for iowa's states that they didn't want to see a lot of today didn't want to see him matched up and he did a pretty good job right there along brock to get rid of that ball there's Matt Campbell fourth season here at Iowa State oh and three against Texas it's the only team in the big 12 he has not beaten yet and he would be the first big boy that the first Iowa State coach to beat every team in the big 12 during his tenure if he can get a victory here today perdy again back to pass and again to the outside and again to pet way Anthony cook is in coverage and Anthony cook he's playing for Jalen green Jalen Green is out for the first half targeting last week against Kansas State so the sophomore getting the call and again is pleased hall and bridge saw he's got a first down breaks another tackle inside the five brought down at the three by Brandon Jones 20 yard pickup for the freshman we talked about briefs all in the open just a true freshman but does such a great job understanding exactly where that play needed to go but a nice job walling off defenders again by Iowa State for the opening birdie looking for Cola got him touchdown [Applause] [Music] Brock Purdy 21st TD pass of the season for him a new single-season record for the Cyclones and for Charlie Kohler another touchdown catch he's got seven on the season Connor Oh Sally for the extra point and the Cyclones strike first seven nothing our score perdy Kohler Cyclones up 7 nothing here in the first charlie Kohler now with a touchdown catching four straight games meanwhile that's at least one TD pass in 10 straight game for Brock Purdy another school record that was a matchup that offensive coordinator Tom Manning liked with this team and it's the difficulty that having tight ends that can run block and catch the ball they're just so dangerous because defenders get their eyes in different places they come up titans' gonna block you number Leeson getting wide open Mike Koehler did right there paddocks kick goes out of bounds so that's a flag Sam telling earlier just a junior but by the time he leaves Austin he could have just about every quarterback record in Austin third passing yards total yards but second becomes a touchdown pass and the handoff Ingram bottled up behind the line of scrimmage by sack Peterson who has become what a pleasant surprises replacing Jaquan Bailey look at the way that he fights through the block on this one just a high effort guys all kinds of talent forced a fumble recovery last week against Oklahoma and ran wide about 60 yards on that one that was a piece of film John Haycock the defensive coordinator had to pull up as an example Hellinger keeps it quote a back run micros comes up and makes the stop [Applause] third down down with it great throw on the outside here to Duvernay not just 21 catches now on third down third most in the nation for duvan a 18 yard pickup right at midfield [Applause] Ingram left side Johnson with the stock and to give him about three yards listen at 6-foot 220 pounds last year as a true freshman about 200 205 and he's put on the weight really hasn't lost a lot of speed he's really developing into the very talented and multi-talented back got the speed and the strength the size you could see him turning the legs right there a lot of fun watch him run this is a physical run attack with a running back and a quarterback that can get it done here is Ellen girl keeps it knocked backwards Marcell Spears led the attack Mike Rose was right with him they gave him a two yard pickup we talked about the versatility of this defense you know it's a three-man front but they get extra hands down from the secondary in a great way and there are people a lot of defensive coordinators even up into the NFL that are taking a look at what these guys do they get extra hats down QB Ron is normally so effective because it changes the equation with the numbers advantage not so with these guys they get the hats there see Ehlinger reading the defense Duvernay in the slot at the top of your screen he's looking up top and out-of-bounds who has drawn it for a Brennan Eagles brought some pressure made Sam throw the ball earlier than he wanted to right they're trying to double back shoulder throw wasn't able to complete it they dialed up the pressure and got home and did what they wanted to do you you ought to affect the quarterback and slow down his processing and speed up the time that he needs to release that ball that's exactly what happened third punt of the day for Texas they averaged three punts a game Milton makes the catch but was surrounded by Longhorns that's what the crowd was responding to but no flag Iowa say football wouldn't we come back seven to nothing our score here in the first quarter Tom Herman you know spent three years here and Iowa State names as the offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2011 Paul Rhoads brought him in here in fact Iowa State's only beaten Texas twice one of those times was because Tom Herman helped them when he was the offensive coordinator that was the first time the Iowa State at beating text that was in 2010 [Applause] his party plenty of time throws touching up Sean Shaw jr. huge that's a 12 yard pick up a first down for the Cyclones we played one quarter here in Ames it is the Cyclones with a seven nothing lead and looking for more we start the second quarter and Iowa State is racked up over a hundred yards of total offense look at the first down they've dominated Jonny Lang is chipped in party throwing DeSean Jameson read it and picked it off and look like Jameson read this one when Pettway he's probably supposed to continue on the slant route right there Jameson continues down and I believe Purdy thinks that Pettway is going to keep moving to the inside but he stops Jameson keeps going and is able to pick that one off third interception of the season for Jamison and the eighth interception on the season for purring Shawn Johnson is back in he gets the call left side Lawrence white the king of other cyclones make the hit Johnson falls forward he's new to that running back position but he's been nice and physical they go at tempo second in five Ehlinger now looks over for the play and we're taking a look we talked about all the different looks that this defense can give you to see if they're able to take advantage that's a first down Anthony Johnson makes the stop they felt they had the numbers advantage over to the left-hand side of the line of scrimmage there and remember with a three-man front so important that you get those second and what third level players up to fill the gaps properly with those run Fitz and Johnson was just a little bit late reacting to that one trips at the top of your screen and once again is Johnson Johnson powers his way and again it's white with the stop Johnson was an early enrollee and Rowley for UT converted to running back basically one week before the season opener against Louisiana Tech hey it's a completely different mindset Tim Beck said the offensive coordinator late I saw him in there pass blockin like yeah these are running back now most important job that you have is a running back is protecting that other back field mate the quarterback here's kiante England brought down Bob three yards shy of the first and a humble pulls the trigger to and he makes Sam Ellender slow down and then the cavalry is able to get there it's not always your job to make the tackle it's our job sometimes to affect the ball this is a guy who is rushed for over a hundred yards and three of the last four games the buys comes and make to play on that one break3 yes I am State offense then a great job mix it up looks today down Toller has just set a school record for receiving yards by a tight end and Iowa State tied in here in a season brought the Blitz from the outside from Brandon Jones good play design and Brock Purdy does a nice job throwing on time right there getting it out to my man charlie Kohler a nice accurate throw to the outside once again [Music] from their own 41 [Music] Paul again gets a push and a six yard pickup drive estate get by with a little help from his friends right there staying vertical sometimes that could be a little bit dangerous because extra people are coming in to take the shots but he had some of his helpers right there all around him nice job with the initial push from that offensive line once again and on the physicality meter you'd have to say at Vantage Iowa State best fall party wide-open Shaw down the sidelines first down in Lordran Mitchell knocks him out of bounds he's in horns territory ten yard pickup you see JaJuan Mitchell he's going to take a shot on Shaw as he's coming across the middle here to kind of change his path but then he just lets him go you can't just hit him you're there for coverage it's nice getting him out of his route but stay out of over to minute checks Allen another one of those tight ends for the Cyclones now they'll go and temple all of these tight ends of former high school basketball players Alan is another one Allstate and basketball football and track you're hurting to shot a Jones now they don't leave the team in catches and receiving yards picks up five nice tackle by Chris Brown on that one want to get the ball in Shante Jones hands there [Applause] had a lot of catches this year but you try and get the ball into his hands early on the outside there and see if he could make somebody miss Chris Brown wasn't having it nice secure tackle from the lawnmower 28 30 again the pass under pressure steps up throws it to hug it all maybe a couple of yards Chris Brown makes the stop you can see minute 17 until the half keep in mind on West 8th will receive the football to begin the second half third and three here party over the middle crossing route first down nodes not the biggest but he's fearless night across the middle there takes a big hit a little high-low this is the 12th play of the drive coming bernie is hit six in a row on this ride down the sidelines incomplete he's looking for Koehler nice job by Chris Brown watch them use this isn't Brown here if you're gonna see Brown up over the top their coverage on Koehler does a nice job forcing Koehler back to the sidelines with his body getting a little bit of help from the sidelines right there need to do against those big guys like that use every tool in the tool kit in the toolbox against a guy like that because it's a big size disadvantage this is Hall inside the 20 and wrapped up helmet comes off he'll have to come out [Applause] big right here in for Texas of course you are limited to three get your offense back on that field and try and get something quick try and get some quick points here at the end of this board into this half cyclones are converted on 22 of the last 24 red zone possessions : throw it for the end zone in short almost intercepted Coby Boyce the sophomore at Corinth Texas nearly came up with the big boys does a nice job here you can see them matched up with Pettway the whole way and this is just a timing thing no one went to get the eyes back you're reading the wide receiver right there and those back shoulder throws can be so difficult defending but he turns around and turns around in the Ames 10 to 7 is our score Bryan Custer alongside Robert Smith and you know you look at the first half and Iowa State was just methodical in the offensive approach of Reese hall just pounding away at 82 yards rushing and Texas had done virtually nothing offensively in the last 30 seconds that goes 75 yards and finally get on the board and Iowa State was just more physical and I loved what John Haycock the defensive coordinator said he said rah rah and weather is not going to beat Texas let's take a look there our first half leaders Rock Purdy 116 yards through the air 16 of 23 what touchdown I went to Kohler and then that one interception that way he's got five catches 37 yards and Kohler three catches 18 yards and the TD Cyclones to start from their own 25 10.7 our school Shantay Jones in motion under pressure spins out got him to Sunday Jones and they're not going to catch him touchdown Iowa State right under the gate 75 yards [Applause] you're gonna see deshante Jones just sneak out on the backside right there and what happens because rock birdy breaks free you have defenders from the secondary coming up four run support but you have to understand as a defender in the secondary who has primary support and you cannot just leave your responsibility free because you know grok birdy has the tendency to scramble to buy time not just to take off downfield with that man Brock birdy has gone over 3,000 yard mark for the season and what a way to hit that mark with this 75 yard bomb to deshante Jones his second touchdown of the season leads the team in catches and receiving yards and you see why did such a great job escaping the pressure right there and you saw three or four texas defenders converging on birdie spins out to his left finds a little bit of space and makes a difficult throw back across his body and of course great deal and accuracy on that one that's one for Jones the prepper who seemed like it hung up in the air forever just waiting for that one to get down nobody home defensively from Texas yeah I recall when we were talking with the defense coordinator of Texas town Orlando he was telling us they've got to win on third down I will say it off the field but he said no explosive blaze we talked about all those new faces on defense and all those young players on defense that's been a real problem the inexperience so here is Sam Eleanore down 10 see them in an empty look right here they certainly want to start driving the ball downfield over the middle off the fingertips of malcom-x reached across his body to get it [Applause] Braxton Lewis in the coverage Helen girl 101 yards passing touchdown du Vernay was his main target v 448 Ingram checks into the backfield Ehlinger crossing route and another drop this one by Eagles a little bit low on this throw from Sam Ehlinger but Eagles got to make that catch we have opportunities to get somebody open like that you see just gets that head turned up field just a little bit too soon gotta concentrate make the catch first Texas needs something big to happen right here but can't be foolish turn the ball over in your own territory third and ten to see if they go to Duvernay that's low for Eagles keep in mind texas started the first half with three three announced and they go three it out here to begin the second half back deep street milton again Texas averaging three putts a game already with six Milton the fair catch Cyclones an explosive first play not the football second offensive possession for Iowa State here in the second half it was 75 yards coming into this game that Iowa State's offensive line against the defensive line man-for-man not a great matchup and they've done a great job with their technique guys are bigger stronger you got to use great technique and heats a good play calling as well getting people into the right position Dante Jones first down down the side the shot dick Jones is drawn Mitchell pushes him out of bounds 21 yard pick up this time and he's gonna motion into the slot and then backs up into position right there get some blocks on the inside from Pettway and Koehler great play design once again from offensive coordinator Tom Manning he could see why he's up for that Morales award a nice job by the Shantay Jones walking the tightrope getting a few extra yards out of that one even after getting pushed one sidelines josepho side the injured long horn walking off this is the fourth 100-yard receiving game for deshante Jones this season the senior out of Cincinnati [Applause] first in ten from the long horn 28 [Applause] spins not behind the line of scrimmage cadence turns he was last season's big 12 freshman play of the week of the year I should say a year man he was and he was injured a lot earlier in the season he does a nice job right there going after this guy briefs all couldn't be getting his name thrown around and freshman of the year conversations nice job right there by Stearns you could see why this Texas defense missed him for his experience and his sound tackling as well off the hands a breeze Hall and almost into the hands Adam Arvin over Sean a little thing like that and we have to get the ball on two running backs he kind of throws it on that back shoulder you know it spits to any and he throws it a little bit high and you know quarterbacks need to know you have to get the ball down a little bit more for running backs because the shoulder pads are a little bit bigger it's harder to get your hands up over your head quickly so he throws that one a little behind her to a six on third down perdy - hi he was looking for Sean Shaw he took a shot Jalen Greene who's seen his first action of the day keep in mind he wouldn't he missed the first half after being suspended for targeting against Kansas State last week fresh legs coming in didn't play any snaps in that first down because of the suspension starting to get some pressure there on Brock Purdy speeding up that clock in his head and affecting his mechanics this is Brandon Braden Arvidsson from 48 season long is 45 he's one of three on the season it's low and just like 4080 order for the redshirt freshman out of Scottsdale right up onto the ladder and up into the air for the freshman 17th meeting between Iowa State in Texas it is the Cyclones with the 22 7 lead here in the third quarter the kick Jamison caught it dropped it across the ten and gets it out to the 19 who's Hellinger five live plenty of time that's complete in a first down Duvernay 13-yard pickup such a nice job on that once he turns back to Sam Ellender he doesn't just stay there he understands where the defender is gets a little separation by moving to the inside and gets a window for Sam alligator delivered the bow another completion to Ingram underneath Ryan Vance brings it down coming up on two minutes left in this quarter doing a nice job there they're being patient this is what offensive coordinator Tim Beck talked about because of the scheme that Iowa State plays you just have to take what they give him and that can mean check downs a lot of times and that's exactly what you saw right there to the outside and complete valve on teh water third and five [Music] [Applause] [Applause] that scoring driving CL ago other ten drives not so much Duvernay in the slot comes across the middle that's Duvernay he's got the football he's across midfield lowers his shaker on Lawrence white that's a 13-yard pickup by Duvernay no taxes for the going whoa buck 30 left in this quarter [Applause] plenty of time underneath again and the Ingram well Ryan Vance makes the stop five-yard pickup you've got to be patient hey if they're gonna give me the underneath stuff just take it yeah absolutely and Tim back again talked about being patient about these being progression type reads and understanding the way that Iowa State plays defense you could have zone in one area man in some areas and so when Sam's going through his progressions he's looking for route combinations that are put in to beat either man or zone depending on what they're getting for the defense that one into coverage John Burton was surrounded by three cyclones another third down coming for Texas [Applause] not a lot of separation right there Sam just trying to trying to get the ball in the bird he throws it a little bit wide not the easiest thing in the world that's why the positions not that not the easiest or the most difficult position in those sports trying to read the defense on the run and deliver a good ball consistently to an eleven on third down that would tip and a flag 35 Jakob first down for Texas right there oh yeah that's an easy call grab that left arm it was an easy call but Duvernay was going to help out the ref anyway and hectic child and start spinning out of that ones like they should catch this but let's not take any chances 30 seconds of to Miller's quarter swings ball and Sam Ehlinger is really doing an excellent job of locating the area of the defense to get the ball and doing a pretty good job delivering Jamie endzone and complete a little high on that one
