[Music] you thought we forgot didn't you you thought we weren't gonna do the Corvette zr1 but we have to this is the biggest baddest Corvette ever welcome to your zr1 the last special edition car for front engine Corvettes so what do you do if you want to make the new king of the hill car and you realize your last zr1 head 640 horsepower your current co6 has more than that in a fantastic moment of pure American ingenuity you take all the dials and just turn them to more I'll have more of that a lot more of that but have a lot more of that oh look there's the winged one turn that way up look at the wing look at the craziness the front end is almost completely open and the splitter has huge corners because it needs it so the designers added a lot of carbon fiber they added this halo hood on the front and it sticks up almost Cano starts blocking your vision this zr1 has head lip implants this is how they've solved the cooling problem is to kind of destroy the front end and make it a bunch of weird little fixtures and lips and curls up it's trying to do duck face no one looks good with lip implants and that includes the zr1 it looks evil in grey you can get it in other colors I'd like it in grey it's properly deaf grey but you know it's still a Chevy this little trim piece over here it's kind of loose wiggles everything else is bathed in Alcantara because you spend 150 grand on this car so we're trying to make it nice [Music] - the ctk track pack you get the giant airplane laying out back what's cool about it it's not just screwed to the sheet metal it's like the c7 our race car it's bolted to the chassis now you can get this car in two setups you can get it with the full wing and the low wing don't buy the low wing go all the way get the big blue this supercharger has 52% more displacement than the LT four that's in the 0/6 we drove seven hundred and fifty five horsepower 715 pound-feet of torque [Applause] the throttle response on this car is speed limits jail you're going to speed limit and now you're in federal prison 200 plus miles an hour in this car which means a hundred is sort of like alright you know it's like boxer cracking his knuckles like okay we're just getting ready to go like that's a hundred but this is one of those cars where you really meet her out when can I actually go full throttle as the universe aligned is there nobody around for 45 miles cuz that's the kind of space you need luckily nobody's around it's quiet well it was quiet [Music] that's enough of that you've got to be joking me the car broke loose in 4th gear it breaks it loose in almost every gear the capability of this cr1 is truly shocking I cannot believe how powerful this is this is up there with the 911 gt2 s I mean they're really absurdly fast stuff this has come to play with those guys you want to talk about a car that exceeds your driving capability and yet you can buy one you can order one and it comes with a warranty you should have to show some ID some race licenses some quality of driving before you can throw it out and buy this car there should be a category because you're gonna hurt yourself and probably someone else and you're gonna cackle as you die in flames dental records won't matter you'll be going so fast it it won't matter yes it still has all the normal modes here so actually touring is pretty comfortable in this car but then you turn it to sport and the sports setting right here opens up a portal to the center of the earth where you can actually hear the magma I'm in sport mode right now which feels about right for a road like this this has got some bumps in it there is track mode if you'd really like to jar your teeth out of your head this car makes me feel like I'm driving slow and I'm not pretty much mocking me every corner that I drive through it just it knows and go faster who knows with this massive amount of power you can gain speed blindingly quickly the carbon ceramic brakes you can lose speed incredibly quickly the thing that's amazing me the most though is how much it hangs on to speed all the while with that voice in the back of your head going that's not nearly as fast the car could take car can take a lot more than that there's a constant devil on your shoulder in this cr1 going the faster I can take more and the car is just shrugging at me I'm pre evaluating much of what I thought I knew about myself already I'm just kind of going back to that Wow I'm a responsible adult right the fatal flaw of the zo6 which is wildly powerful to begin with is it actually had a tendency to overheat on the track that same engine went put in the cts-v cadillac also had a tendency to over keep on the track so we're trying to have the be-all-end-all corvette here but if you wanted to track all day you've got to figure out that cooling problem so they added four radiators your car probably has one maybe two this has 13 because you know if nine is good 13 is better right they've succeeded in fact I know that because they ran for 24 hours straight to vir they ran they're only changing gas and tires in the car ran for 24 hours straight and accidentally broke the track record oops in fact they accidentally broke the track record that had just been broken the week before by the four times more expensive for GT [Music] the zo6 felt like the pinnacle and now we cranked it up again to a place that is candidly just silly [Music] this is a truly irresponsible purchase and I love it I think this is a child's fever dream of a car you know what it'd be awesome we took the zo6 we made it more go things that [Music] the question my mind though is where do you go from here I mean this does feel like the farthest we can take this front engine rear transaxle long-nosed architecture that has always been the Corvette the next car could very well be more horsepower but it's not going to have the speed and the drama and the excitement and the noise and the crazy and the trying to break out of its straightjacket kind of feel never again will it feel like that this is the mad hatter of automobiles it's bigger broader more absurd and yes aloma that same Corvette zr1 die happy that's where we are don't part these cars don't wait for these to go up in value I hope there are no 2019 CR ones that ever appear on an auction floor as new undriven with the front-engine Corvettes the way they are I think we've kind of peaked this is it this is the pinnacle of this idea we have to try something else completely what's crazy is czar Duntov was pushing for that mid-engine corvette from the beginning from the c1 finally it looks like we really are going to get one they might even call it the Sora [Music] [Music] everybody needs a 500-horsepower car in their life [Music] there's a lot more here than we've been led to believe [Music] if you want a Corvette and this affects you like it does me your god that's bad [Music] you [Music]

This car just doesn't do it for me and this is coming from a guy who loves the C7. The performance for the dollar, the usability, the looks, the sound, I love it all in regards to the C7. The Z06 to me is as far as I'd go though. I have a want, a need, for a Z06 unlike anything else but this? I think its a little too much and I'd rather get a Z06 even if I had the money for a ZR1.

I don't think the price increase over a Z06 is worth it personally. Yes the performance value proposition is still good but I think its tapered off a bit in comparison to a Z06. The wing, big or small, aesthetically doesn't do it for me. I like functional wings but it isn't pleasing to my eyes. I enjoy the Z06 spoiler much more. The revised front end also doesn't do it for me. I don't mind it, I know its functional, but I still prefer to look at the front end of a Z06. I also believe that no matter the value proposition at a certain point the interior has to change. I can accept C7 interior material because the performance increases for every model up to the Z06 are very reasonably priced, the ZR1 is 40k more then a Z06 and once you've reached 150k for a car, 755hp or not, a plastic center console and cup holder divider is not cool.

Still a cool car though.

I love everything about the ZR1, honestly. The looks are ferocious, carbon fiber is bloody everywhere, the wing is awesome and extremely well designed, the exhaust is like the fucking world is ending... Itโ€™s just an amazing car. Itโ€™s a shame that GM hasnโ€™t really done much with it; I know they set a few lap records with the ZR1, but the car hasnโ€™t really taken the car world by storm like I had imagined it would. Hell, the ZL1/1LE was much more of a, โ€œholy shitโ€, when it first came out compared to the king of Corvettes.

In any case though, this thing is a damn super car through and through, and is an excellent swan song for front engine Vettes. The only thing that I wish was that it was either a fair bit lighter than it is, or that GM made two separate versions of the ZR1: a more GT style road friendly car, and a fucking mental, 1LE style track car with the same amazing shocks and hardcore suspension from the ZL1 1LE.

I know the look is polarizing but man I love it. I have a Z06 on order and I think that's an absolutely stunning car with all of the carbon fiber ground effects and aero. But man something about the ZR1 does it for me.

Couldn't justify the cost though. Especially for a daily. It doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from the Z06 for the cost. I think the only real people that get the ZR1 are die hard Corvette guys or people that just want the feeling of owning the "best" version of something.

ofc this is all personal and subjective but looks wise, C7 ZR1 is the only C7 I like. It feels like it really starts to justify the angles of the C7 that never really bit for me otherwise. But only in darker colors that don't clash with panels that don't get painted. And I feel like it will look dated much sooner than a dialed in C6 Z06.

I finally saw one in person and they are menacing. I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything out there right now that has that kind of presence, no matter the price.
