I AM HERE TO PROVIDE CONTEXT FOR THE SONGS OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN--SONGS THAT WE KNOW AND LOVE AND SING ALL THE TIME. I AM HERE TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT MAKES RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN, RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN. THEIR SONGS REMAIN AS POPULAR TODAY AS WHEN THEY WERE FIRST WRITTEN. THEIR LAST SONG, WRITTEN 70 YEARS AGO, WAS EDELWEISS. THESE SONGS ARE STILL PLAYED OVER AND OVER. THE NAMES RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN HAVE BECOME ESSENTIALLY ONE WORD. BUT BEFORE THEM, THERE WAS ROGERS WITH HART. AND THERE WAS HAMMERSTEIN WITH LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE, INCLUDING JEROME KERN AND SIGMUND ROMBERG. SO, EACH HAD LIVES BEFORE THEY WORKED WITH EACH OTHER BEGINNING IN 1943. MET OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, HE WOULD STILL HAVE BEEN THE PRE-EMINENT BROADWAY COMPOSER OF THE ERA. HE STARTED OUT IN 1925 WITH A SHOW CALLED GARRICK GAIETY, WRITTEN WITH LARRY HART, HIS LONGTIME COLLABORATOR. EVEN IN HIS FIRST SHOW AT THE AGE OF 23, RODGERS WROTE A SONG THAT WOULD STAY IMMORTAL: "I'LL TAKE MANHATTAN." HE AND LARRY WROTE SONGS THAT REMAIN PART OF THE STANDARD CATALOGUE TODAY. THEY WROTE "MY "FUNNY VALENTINE," "BEWITCHED, BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED," AND "BLUE MOON," AMONG MANY OTHERS. EVEN THOUGH THEY ENJOYED AN UNBROKEN STRING OF SUCCESSES, THE RELATIONSHIP OF RICHARD RODGERS AND LARRY HART WAS CRUMBLING. RICHARD RODGERS KNEW HE NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING. NOW TO MOVE OVER TO HAMMERSTEIN. HE STARTED HIS CAREER EARLIER, IN 1920. THROUGHOUT THE 20S HE DID WELL. HE HAD TWO LARGE HITS: "ROSEMARIE" AND "SHOWBOAT." BUT THE 30S WERE TOUGH FOR OSCAR. HE FOUND THAT BY THE END OF THE 1930S PEOPLE DIDN'T WANT TO WORK WITH HIM. SO, LIKE ANY GOOD AMATEUR, HE NEVER STOPPED WORKING. HE KEPT WORKING FOR HIMSELF. HE STARTED BY TRYING TO ADAPT BIZET'S OPERA, "CARMEN." WHILE HE WAS WORKING ON THAT OPERA, WORLD WAR II RAGED, AND PARIS FELL TO THE NAZIS. OSCAR WAS SO BROKENHEARTED ABOUT THIS SITUATION, HE FELT HE HAD TO WRITE SOMETHING TO COMMEMORATE HIS FEELINGS-- ABOUT WHAT HE REMEMBERED IN PARIS. SO, HE WROTE "THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS." THAT SONG WON AN OSCAR. FOR OSCAR, LOOKING AT HIS OSCAR WAS LIKE LOOKING AT A RETIREMENT POCKET WATCH. IT WAS, "DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT." WHILE HE WAS WORKING ON "CARMEN JONES" BY HIMSELF, HE GETS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR. THE KNOCK WAS RICHARD RODGER INVITING HIMSELF OVER FOR LUNCH. IT'S 1942. RICHARD RODGERS POURS HIS HEART OUT TO OSCAR AND TELLS HIM THAT LARRY HART, HIS COLLABORATOR, IS KILLING HIMSELF WITH DRINK. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT IT? RICHARD RODGERS ASKS IF OSCAR WOULD BE WILLING TO GHOST WRITE FOR LARRY HART, SINCE HE CAN'T WORK ON HIS OWN. OSCAR SAYS "NO, I WOULD NEVER GHOST WRITE, NOR WOULD I EVER BREAK UP THE THEN MOST SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATOR DUO IN BROADWAY HISTORY. BUT," OSCAR SAID, "IF THERE EVER CAME A POINT WHEN LARRY HART COULDN'T WORK AND YOU NEED SOMEBODY, I WOULD BE GLAD TO STEP IN AND TRY TO BE HELPFUL." SO, THERE WERE FIVE CHILDREN, A HALF A DOZEN COUSINS RUNNING AROUND THE PLACE DURING THE WAR, MAKING A RACKET, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO WORK. SO, OSCAR, ON THE FARM IN BUCK'S COUNTY, HAD A SET OF FLAGS HE WOULD FLY OUT THE WINDOW. AND A BLACK FLAG MEANT, "STAY AWAY IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE." A RED FLAG MEANT, "ANYONE WANT TO PLAY TENNIS?" THERE WERE 8 OR 9 DIFFERENT

HAMMERSTEIN: FRESH ON THE HEELS OF THEIR ENORMOUS SUCCESS WITH SOUTH PACIFIC, RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN WERE APPROACHED BY A SUPERSTAR AT THE TIME NAMED GERTRUDE LAWRENCE. GERTRUDE LAWRENCE WAS SUCH A POWERFUL FORCE, SUCH A SUPERSTAR, THAT WHEN SHE APPROACHED THEM, SHE WAS APPROACHING THEM ESSENTIALLY WITH A STAR VEHICLE FOR HERSELF. SHE HAD BOUGHT THE RIGHTS TO THE STORY OF "ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM," THE STORY OF A TEACHER AT THE COURT OF THE KING OF SIAM. SHE WAS SO IMPORTANT, THAT HER NAME WENT ABOVE RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN IN THE PROGRAM AND IN THE SHEET MUSIC--THAT'S THE KIND OF ROCK STAR SHE WAS. IT'S FUNNY--THE FICKLE FINGERS OF FATE! WE DON'T REALLY REMEMBER MUCH OF GERTRUDE LAWRENCE, BUT WE CAN'T NOT REMEMBER THE KING, YUL BRYNNER. YUL BRYNNER HAS THE MOST INTERESTING I COULD POSSIBLE SHARE-- I'M GOING TO TELL IT TO YOU. HERE'S HOW HIS LIFE BEGAN: HE WAS BORN IN RUSSIA, EDUCATED IN CHINA, HE WAS THE SON OF GYPSIES AND LEARNED TUMBLING, ACROBATICS, AND CABARET SINGING. HE DID EVERYTHING IN THE CIRCUS. BUT HE HAD A BAD FALL AS A YOUNG MAN AND, AS A RESULT, HE BECAME ADDICTED TO MORPHINE. NOW, WHEN YOU BECAME ADDICTED TO MORPHINE IN THOSE DAYS, YOU'D "DRY OUT" IN SWITZERLAND. SO, WHEN YUL BRYNNER WENT TO SWITZERLAND TO "DRY OUT," AND HE RAN INTO (ALSO DRYING OUT) COLETTE AND MARCEL MARCEAU, WHEN THEY SAW YUL BRYNNER, THEY SAID, "YOU HAVE THE EYE OF THE TIGER, SIR. YOU SHOULD GET INTO THE THEATRE." SO, HE CAME TO AMERICA AND GOT A JOB AS A TRANSLATOR FOR THE U.S. PROPAGANDA DEPARTMENT, BECAUSE HE SPOKE CHINESE, RUSSIAN, AND ENGLISH. THEN HE GOT A JOB AS A DIRECTOR FOR A TV OMNIBUS SERIES, WHICH WAS VERY WELL REGARDED. SO, THAT WAS HIS STRANGE RESUME SO, THAT WAS HIS STRANGE RESUME WHEN HE CAME TO AUDITION FOR THE WHEN HE CAME TO AUDITION FOR THE ROLE OF THE KING. HE CAME INTO THE AUDITION, DICK AND OSCAR ARE SITTING IN THE FRONT ROW, HE'S WEARING PAJAMA'S, HE PULLS OUT A SEVEN-STRING GUITAR, SITS CROSS-LEGGED IN HIS PAJAMA'S, WHACKS OUT AN OPEN E CHORD AND START'S HOWLING LIKE A WOLF. [LAUGHTER] OSCAR AND DICK TURNED TO EACH OTHER AND SAY, "THAT'S OUR KING." BUT THEY ALSO RECOGNIZE THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE A KIND OF A "TRUTH-TO-POWER" STORY, WHERE THE WOMAN STANDS UP TO THE KING. NOW THE KING IN THE ORIGINAL ITERATION, THE REAL KING, WAS MORE ALONG THE LINES OF A KIM JONG-UN--UGLY AND MEAN, LIKE THIS. BUT WHEN THEY SAW YUL BRYNNER, THEY WERE LIKE, "THAT'S OUR BOY, BUT WE'VE GOT TO MAKE CHANGES." SO THEY WENT BACK AND REWROTE IT. IT WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE A LOVE STORY, BUT BECAUSE OF THAT AUDITION, TO A GREAT EXTENT BECAUSE OF YUL BRYNNER, "THE KING AND I" BECAME A LOVE STORY. I CAN THINK OF NO ONE ON EARTH WHO IS MORE IDENTIFIED WITH ONE ROLE THAN YUL BRYNNER. ONE CAN'T THINK OF THE KING WITHOUT THINKING OF HIM. BY THAT POINT THE COMPETITION HAD GOTTEN THE MESSAGE. WHAT I LIKE TO SAY IS: "RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN SHOWS-- NOT REALLY BY RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN--WERE PROLIFERATING: "KISS ME KATE," "GUYS AND DOLLS," "MY FAIR LADY." AND IN THE MEANTIME THEY WERE STRUGGLING TO KEEP UP, WRITING "ME AND JULIET," "PIPE DREAM," AND "FLOWER DRUM SONG." SO, ANOTHER FACTOR IN SUCCESS IS PLAIN OLD "GOOD LUCK." IN 1957, THEY WERE APPROACHED BY CBS TELEVISION, WHICH HAD HAD AN ENORMOUS SUCCESS WITH A SHOW THEY HAD BROADCAST WITH MARY MARTIN: "PETER PAN." REMEMBER "CLAP FOR TINKERBELL?" WELL, THEY WANTED TO REPLICATE THAT SUCCESS, SO THEY APPROACHED RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN ASKED THEM IF THEY WOULD WRITE A CHILDREN'S OPERETTA OF "CINDERELLA." THEY HAD NEVER WORKED IN THE TV MEDIUM BEFORE AND THEY SAID, "SURE." SUCH WAS THE STAYING POWER OF THEIR FAME, THAT WHEN CINDERELLA WAS BROADCAST IN 1957. OF THE 175,000,000 WHO LIVED IN THIS COUNTRY, 107 MILLION OF THEM WERE WATCHING THAT SHOW ON 30 MILLION TV SETS. THAT IS TO SAY, AS THEY BROADCASTED "CINDERELLA" ON CHANNEL 2, CHANNELS 4, 5, 7, 9, AND 11, COULDN'T SELL ADD SPACE AND RAN TEST PATTERNS DURING THE PRESENTATION. AT THE VERY END, CHANNEL 4 PIGGY-BACKED ON THE SIGNAL, SO YOU COULD WATCH IT ON BOTH CHANNELS, IF YOUR RABBIT EARS WERE GOOD ON ONE AND NOT THE OTHER. [LAUGHTER] AND THEN THERE WAS MARY MARTIN WHO HAD BOUGHT THE RIGHTS TO A STORY ABOUT A GOVERNESS WHO HAD FLED THE NAZIS IN AUSTRIA. SOUND FAMILIAR? SHE ASKED RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO SOME OF THE MUSIC. EVENTUALLY THEY SAID, "SURE." THAT SHOW WAS "THE SOUND OF MUSIC", WHICH WAS A BIG COMMERCIAL SUCCESS ON BROADWAY. BUT REALLY, WHAT MADE RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN LINGER SO LONG IN THE MEMORY OF AMERICA IS THE MOVIE, MADE IN 1965. IN 1965, "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" CAME OUT WITH JULIE ANDREWS AND CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER, AND HELD THE RECORD FOR BOX-OFFICE REVENUES FOR 10 YEARS, UNTIL IT WAS FINALLY OVERTAKEN BY<i>JAWS</i>IN 1975. [LAUGHTER] NOW I'M GOING TO SHARE THE SECRET OF THEIR SUCCESS. THE METAPHOR OF "THE CHURCH ON A HILL." YOU WALK UP A HILL TO A CHURCH. YOU DON'T ENTER IT. YOU LOOK AT THE CHURCH, YOU LOOK THROUGH THE WINDOWS, AND THROUGH THE WINDOWS YOU CAN SEE WHAT'S INSIDE AND ALL OF THE OTHER WINDOWS, TOO. NOW SAY TO YOURSELF, THOSE WINDOWS ARE THE SONGS, AND THE CHURCH IS THE STORY, AND WHEN YOU LOOK IN THE WINDOW, YOU SEE THE STORY AND YOU SEE ALL THE OTHER SONGS, TOO. THE REASON FOR THE SUCCESS OF THESE SONGS ISN'T JUST THE FACT THAT THEY ARE BRILLIANT AND INGENIOUS-IT IS ALSO THAT THEY ARE SET INTO WONDERFULLY, WELL-WRITTEN STORIES THAT PEOPLE WANT TO TELL OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THE SECRET OF THE SONGS IS THE SHOWS. SO WHY DON'T WE TAKE A LITTLE SPIN, UP THE TOP OF THAT HILL WITH JULIE ANDREWS. THANK YOU. ♪♪ ♪ THE HILLS
