there are places where time stands still were the same spirit that forged this village more than a century ago still thrives meticulously preserved protected amid that laid-back southern lifestyle on a masterpiece that took a lifetime to perfect pure genius in the sand hills of North Carolina where 15 years ago the mystical powers of Pinehurst first cross paths with a US Open Fame stored as the 19 but that one moment in time one man made us never forget how ha inspiring one can be if you've never stopped believing it all lasts forever among the brilliance of its Pines and through its endless sands of time we're pinehearst in the latest road to another US open meet again expect anything different the United States Open this is the greatest golf tournament in the world and I'm proud to win it Donald Ross designed more than 400 golf courses in its lifetime but called Pinehurst home he opened the number two course in 1907 and lived in a house just off the third hole the renowned course has held elite amateur tournaments and major championships for more than a century nearly every golfer of historical significance has won here after 100 years the US Open finally came to Pinehurst and it was a championship for the ages Payne Stewart holed a dramatic 18 foot par putt on the final hole to edge father-to-be Phil Mickelson and capture his second open title Stewart died tragically just four months later but his memory and legacy live on Pinehurst was again home to the US Open in 2005 when Michael Campbell held up a hard-charging Tiger Woods for his first major championship win in 2014 the USGA and Pinehurst partnered on an unprecedented venture hosting the US Open and US Women's Open on back-to-back weeks in the same course in preparation for the historic double bill Corr and Ben Crenshaw oversaw the restoration of number two removing more than 35 acres of rough and reintroducing natural sandy wire grass areas for the hopes of bringing the course back to how Donald Ross originally intended for it to look and play for the first time in the history of the championship more than 10,000 entries were received evening showers gave way to glorious sunshine for the start of the 114th US Open Phil Mickelson was the biggest story coming into the week a six-time runner-up in the championship he was looking for the elusive US Open title to complete the career grand slam starting at the par-5 10th he got off to a nice start a wedge to five feet setting up a good chance for birdie and Mickelson converts his last minute switched to the claw grip paying dividends early and he'd keep it going on 14 fill after a perfect tee shot only 141 to the hole golf course this morning is gettable see ball stopping quickly shot see the roars of approval Mickelson to the top of the leaderboard again at a US Open but after missing long at the par-3 15th he had trouble negotiating the turtle back greens wow that is Pinehurst right there in a nutshell Mickelson would give back another shot and open with an even par 70 I played well today and you have to play well to shoot around part of the US Open I I felt like it should have been for 5-under par I didn't make any of the of the pots that were makeable any of the 15 20 footers that that I had get really good opportunities Rickie Fowler in search of his first major title grew up idolizing the 99 champion Thursday he honored the Stewart legacy by wearing a pair of plus fours Fowler started his round on the back nine powering his first 10 holes looking to get something going at the 2nd a birdie at the typical par four to move to 1-under then looking to get another one from the front of the green at the 8th dead in the center but a rotation short like Phil and even par 74 Fowler runner-up this year at the Masters 20 year old jordan Spieth hope to become the youngest US Open winner in more than a century playing with Fowler Spieth off to a fast start with a birdie at 10 and then this at 13 that moved to 2-under a drop shot on 15 but a chance to get it back on 16 after a brilliant approach on opening 69 for the two-time US Junior Amateur champion the 2013 champion Justin Rose trying to do what no one has done since Curtis Strange 25 years ago defend his title starting at the 10th Rose was already 2 over at the 17th a 6-iron right at the flag but it rolls over the green leading to another bogey it seemed to be getting away from Rose but this putt at the first to get back on track an inward 933 to salvage a 72 for the defending champion the 2010 champion Graham McDowell looking to get off to a hot start following a bogey at the 4th the man from Northern Ireland had this putt for Eagle to get into red figures at the 5th after 8 straight pars from 146 yards Graeme McDowell a US Open champion at Pebble here on 14 gorgeous shot a birdie to move to 2-under where he would finish the first round Bubba Watson the Masters champion for the second time in the last three years was outspoken early in the week about how he thought Pinehurst didn't quite suit his game and it showed early after bogeys at four and six his approach at the 7th misses back over at 7 Bubba Watson laid back short of that big bunker you see their mark this is his second and this one is well to the left Peter a bogey there and he came to the 18th at +5 on the round a wayward Drive would lead to another bogey for Bubba an opening 76 left him in danger of missing the cut in 2010 and his only prior open appearance Brendon de yong shared the first-round lead at Pebble Beach he started slowly making bogeys on his first two holes at Pinehurst but a 14 looked to get one back very good there he tapped that in and add birdies at 16 and 17 to go out in 34 here at the par-5 5th to go to 2-under a solid 68 Purdy on the 2012 FedEx Cup champion and one of the best putters on - or Brandt Snedeker out early on Thursday morning and he got things going at the first a lawn birdie to get to 1-under at five for birdie and another one finds the bottom a chance to get to 3-under at seven and he curls this one end and then at the 8th from 200 yards to within three feet setting up his fourth birdie of the front nine but it unraveled quickly he bogeyed the 10th then found the fairway bunker with his drive at 11 dead left now he's got to get lucky that would lead to a double an up-and-down round of 69 for Snedeker one of the last players to make the field based on his World Golf Ranking Kevin Na took advantage in the first round hole high in two at the par-5 5th not shipping for Eagle on opening round 68 for na but everyone was chasing Martin Kaymer the 2014 players champion found Pinehurst to his liking in the opening round a good angle for his approach at the 1st that would be a birdie discard his round he turned in 34 then really got it going on the second nine at the 10th Martin Kaymer with his third it's just a wedge look for this to be a little more aggressive there we go nice timer no problem to get to 2-under after three pars a wedge approach at 14 the yardage is 115 even had the great angle on the left side another birdie to take the lead then at the difficult par-4 16th plane at 517 yards Martin Kaymer second or just another fantastic golf swing very steady over the ball not a bad shot either Wow nice Martin Kaymer for birdie after that wonderful second shot another one to get to 4-under use it at the next tool the 213 yards 17 were the 6-iron very very good his fourth birdie of his first nine a par at the home hole would get primer of 5-under 65 and a three-stroke lead at the end of round one the 65 the lowest round in a US Open at Pinehurst McDowell the 2010 champion highlighted a group of for three strokes off the lead in all 15 players broke par other names in the mix included Fowler and Mickelson and even McIlroy and rose were one and two over the world number one was plus three and two-time champion Ernie L shot 74 more than an inch of rain soaked number two overnight creating favorable scoring conditions for those players out in the morning including the leader who started his round at the 10th his third at the par-5 he'd make that to get to 6-under timers mastery of the treacherous greens was on display with long birdie putts at both 13 and 16 opening up a big lead at 8-under after rolling in a couple of bombs timer showed he could do it with a driver two at the 315 yard third Wow a shot Oh a two-putt birdie would get into 9-under two holes later at the par-5 5th Kaymer from short range to get to 10-under the sixth player to reach double digits under par on a US Open bogey 365 left him in the driver's seat 336 eight shots it's it's a lot but you know 50% of the field that's enough to go out and play a play the second round so we will see where I'm ending up at the end of the day hopefully still leading it's about the mindset that you know the third and fourth round in a major I usually don't get easier so you have to set out your own goals and play very solid and don't make any silly mistakes mental wise if you keep playing and try to challenge yourself on the golf course you know that you don't think ahead or or relax too much Snedeker whose opening round featured six birdies three bogeys and a double looking for another birdie to start Friday's round at the 10th a beauty from 25 feet Thursday he was derailed at 11 and more of the same Friday at the same hole his approach would roll off the front of the green leading to his second double in as many days but that would be his only flaw on Friday scorecard looking to connect from long range at 16 perfect speed for Snedeker who would add two more birdies and finished 2 under on the day - 3 at the halfway point Adam Scott the top ranked player in the world was pre championship favorite for many but 34 putts in round 1 led to a disappointing 73 looking to make up some ground in the second round from 6 feet at 14 back-to-back birdies gets Scott to +1 always considered one of the best ball strikers of the game he was looking to take advantage of the forward team ground at the par-4 3rd hole-high setting up another birdie then looking to get out of trouble at the 5th from the native area beauty and now to take advantage of the great recovery shot his fourth birdie of the day a 3-under 67 to get the Aussie back to even par for the championship Rory McIlroy who knows a little something about big leads at the US Open trying to get himself back in contention at Pinehurst an opening bogey at 10 dropped into +2 for the championship but a chance to get that shot back at 14 and he's back to +1 another birdie at 3 and then this to move into red figures at the 5th a second round 68 and a two-day total of 139 henrik Stenson to 2013 FedEx Cup champion had never cracked the top 20 in his 7 previous US Opens he stumbled with two early bogeys but recovered nicely with consecutive birdies at the 5th and 6th improving to 1-under closing his round at the 169 yard 9th with a 9-iron he's within three feet for another birdie in a second consecutive 69 Charlotte resident Brendon de young looking to build off the momentum of his opening 68 an 8-iron at the par-3 15th this is one of those putts that were all about 15 on the step meter Shawn an even-par 70 for the young in the second round Brooks koepka who qualified for the championship over at Walton Heath in England for birdie at the 3rd gets it to go back to even par he'd make another birdie at the 5th then this to join the group at 2-under a 2 at the par-3 9th to finish his round tied for fifth long hitting Dustin Johnson who has won each of the past seven years on the PGA Tour looking for his first major title at Pinehurst from long range at the 15th and Johnson to 2-under he drove it in the greenside bunker at the third nice play from the bunker setup another birdie just short of the green in two at the thin well judged we get a tap-in birdie and a 36-hole total of 138 over at the 8th this is Kevin Na from way down the slope this is one of the more dramatic drop-offs around the back of this 8th dream that you'll find anywhere on pioneers number 2 and Kevin Na has no problem with it that is one of those shots you make 1 out of 50 so that's show us how good it is and now continued his fine play at the 11th he would make that to move to 4-under after a bogey at 13 na looking to get it back at 15 and the big swinging putt drops a 69 on Friday for na 3-under for the championship but the closest pursuer to Kaymer was 28 year old Brendon Todd who grew up playing junior golf less than an hour up the road in Cary North Carolina he got hot early converting short birdie putts at 3 and at 5 to move to 3-under and looking for more at the par-4 13th up the hill got to carry to the hole now to capitalize on the good approach Brendon Todd playing in his first US Open in front of his friends and family a bogey-free 67 to play his way into the final group on Saturday trimers back to back 65 the lowest 36 hole score and US Open history he had a six-shot lead over Todd Snedeker and nah were another back a group of five others were tied at 2 under par 8 strokes off the pace those not making the cut included recently crowned Masters champion Bubba Watson as well as the reigning PGA champion Jason Dufner three other past champions on hell Cabrera Geoff Ogilvy and Lucas Glover failed to make the cut Kaymer ascended to the top of the game quickly a PGA champion at just 25 two years later it was his putt at the 18th hole that gave the Europeans a dramatic come-from-behind Ryder Cup victory he had accomplished so much so soon but in an effort to change his swing so he could work the ball both ways he found inconsistency he missed the cut in four of the next eight majors and had no worldwide victories in 2012 or 2013 but his game was rounded into shape in early 2014 an opening 63 led him to victory at the players and his six-shot lead at the midway point admirers had people making comparisons to the record-breaking performances of Tiger Woods in 2009 Roy in 2011 could he continue to dominate or woody falter opening the door for others on moving day the sentimental favorite Phil Mickelson was doing everything he could to get it going but Pinehurst in its famed turtle back greens at other ideas from the greenside bunker at six so is it gonna stop man Mickelson hole high and the drivable par-4 7th got a little bit unlucky probably should have stayed in the bunker there but he tapped that in for birdie but it was his only 1 of the day in order to Baldy contention he really needed to go low the long putt at 9 was to save par and Phil with a third round 72 rory mcilroy never got it going either early bogeys at 2 and 4 moved him back to +1 and his struggles continued at the 5th this balls coming back into the bunker VIN is fourth from about the same place tell you what that one's got to go he knows it he's frozen up try to get a mark on it he's salvaged a bogey there and even the shots that look good were rejected by pine her screens and you could hear the crowd cheering they were excited to see that stick there perhaps for a 10 12 footer for birdie a 74 by McIlroy dropped him out of contention Kenny Perry made it in the field by virtue of his win at the 2013 US Senior Open Kenny Perry oldest player in the field at 53 made the cut working that big sweeping draw of his from it and look at this man Kenny what native ruff 220 yards with a hybrid the shot of the championship by Perry who finished with a 74 on Saturday Dustin Johnson with 8 pars and a bogey on the first nine looking to spark his round at 10 yes first birdie of the day for the long hitting Johnson and back to 2-under for another one at 14 looks good an even par 70 left him tied for fourth the 2-under DeYoung started his round at 2-under had his putter working for a birdie at the 4th but at the 7th gave it back missing the short par putt up at the 198 yard night young seven back at 2-under he's even on the day a couple of birdies couple of bogeys he converted that to get back to 3-under but he found trouble at 15 with an awkward stance in the bunker that would lead to a double bogey and too young ended the day back at +1 henrik Stenson who ended his round with a birdie on Friday picking right up where he left off at the first good start for Stenson but he'd give it right back at number two you can't land it short of the green with that Club comes right back to you despite the miscue and even par 70 left Stenson in good position tied for 4th the feel-good story of the championship 34 year-old Eric Compton who qualified just to be here but it isn't just his golf abilities that make his story special in 2008 he drove himself to the hospital because he knew his heart was failing it did he collapsed when he got there I believe that I was gonna live forever with that heart and I tried to get back to normal life but it just it was like a blown out tire I mean I couldn't do anything that was the end of his second heart his first only lasted until he was 12 the initial transplant saved his life but his recovery was painful both physically and emotionally but six years later he became America's top junior golfer and now in just a second major he is living a dream that never seemed possible you know I have been through a lot in my life and a lot more adrenaline pressure situations and then hitting a tee shot on 18 so putting things in perspective a healthy starting the third round at even he bogeyed the third but had this for Eagle at the fifth and Compton suddenly into red figures he followed with a birdie at 7 than this approach at 8 it's really swinging well it's a very simple swing and Compton from short range for birdie to get to 2-under just the second time he's played in the US Open missed the cut his only other try back at Pebble Beach and look at Compton the two-time heart transplant recipient is on a great run here a par at nine to turn in 33 and he kept the momentum going on the back erik Compton playing his third shot here to the par-5 well that's a good one controls the distance nicely you're at Compton chance to reach 3-under par and does what an amazing story and he'd look to keep it going at 11:00 with this long birdie attempt get a 3-under round going holy and want a par if you can and looks good make it for under and going the best on the course by three shots for erik Compton who moves to 4-under with his fourth birdie in the last five holes a 3-under 67 left him tied for second heading into Sunday felt really comfortable out there and then I picked good targets and aggressive swings pulled off a lot of great shots in the front nine and and then you know I'm just really happy to be here you know when I was walking down 18 it's like you know you try to keep yourself focused but you're emotional and you're you're in the competition and look it's just it's really great great to be here and I'm looking forward to tomorrow Fowler who like Compton started the day it even began to make his push at the 3rd from 181 yards he's got a good pair of hands he spins the ball really well like that guess it was a good spot that's best shot of the day he'd tap that in for birdie then at the short par-4 13th Rickie Fowler with a chance to get back to 2-under and does his fourth birdie of the day against two mogees he followed that with three straight pars before this birdie look at 17 Fowler looking to move up the board one more notch Rickie Fowler one of the most popular players in the field he ties Compton for low round of the day and secures his spot in Sunday's final pairing well first of all I'm happy to be under par that's it was a grind out there today I didn't hit his as well as I would like to Joe it a little bit poorly other not just hung in there hit a lot of great shots into the greens and I got the ball up now when I needed to Kevin Na playing in the second-to-last group with his second at the par-5 5th asking for it to go that landshort it should chase up so Kevin Na will have a chance to get to 4-under par heed to putt for birdie then at the 8th not coming in from 178 doing a twirl like he loves it and walking after it asking for the Big Bounce about 15 feet below the hole for just a second birdie all day at 8 the slow might move at it right to get to 4-under in Compton he ran off 4 straight pars then from 15 feet for birdie at 13 he hit it if he hit it yeah wow what a good putt so close but now would remain at 4-under at the next hole however he misjudged his second shot and faced a difficult shot from over the green that would set up a double at 14 he'd make another at the 16th and what seemed like a round with so much potential ended with a 73 plane in the final group local favorite Brendon Todd was hoping to make a run at Kaymer from the front of the green at 2 that needs to slow down that could go off the green Wow that would lead to a bogey his pudding woes continued with a short Miss at 3:00 and this slip out at 6:00 four bogeys over the first six holes for time and it got worse at seven after a pulled drive into the native area a recovery shot that found more trouble leading to a double and a third round 79 that dropped him off the first page of the leaderboard starting the day with a six stroke lead Martin Kaymer seemed in control of all aspects of his game but after missing just three fairways over the first 36 holes his driver was shaky to start Saturday's round missing right on the 2nd leading to his first bogey in 30 holes and left at the 4th this is bold oh man that could go anywhere you'd better get lucky he inspected his position and then discussed his options with USGA officials ultimately decided to take an unplayable instead of risking a big number by attempting a bold recovery shot he pitched back into the fairway played his fourth to 15 feet and had this to save bogey took an unplayable ended up paying off for Kaymer after another missed fairway at the 5th Kaymer in the native area from 202 yards this could go in that marker right in front of them and they got a pretty good piece of it it's pretty solid for the Eagle a little bit left started the day with a six-shot lead appears to have struggled through the first four holes and now the lead is seven he then hit the green at the par-3 6th and faced this long birdie putt he gave this a pop he gave this that's off the green boys that led to his third bogey in five holes to drop him back to 9-under but he settled in and had this for birdie at 14 hold right there then at the last for a closing birdie this for a five shot 54-hole lead in the US Open man right in the middle that's a good way to say good night at Pinehurst number two birdie the 18th post 8-under yeah very I mean I made it made a couple of bad swings in the first nine put myself in bad positions but I only made made bogey which the switch is okay only want one birdie and one one Eagle so I'm happy you know 8-under par after three rounds is a good score still a 72 gave him a five shot lead over Fowler in Compton heading into the final Sunday Stenson Johnson and Snedeker were the only others under par after 54 holes several tee markers were moved forward in Sunday's final round to entice the players to take risks and reward bold well-executed shots traditionally the final round of the US Open has been played on Father's Day a lifelong bond shared between fathers and their kids spending time with in many cases the one that first introduced them to the game it's a special day for the players to Fowler arriving with his father rod Fran Quinn with his 15 year old son Owen catting for him throughout the championship and Jim Blair who planned the 81 US Open himself throwing on the caddie bib for a walk up 18 with his son Zach preps the only player in the field that is a grandfather Kenny Perry at 14 where he hold out for Eagle on Saturday nearly does it again a tap-in birdie and an even-par 70 which tied him for 28th there were plenty of great shots from this group his playing competitor on Sunday Zach Johnson a 7-iron at the 172 yard 9th the 44th ace in US Open history and Johnson celebrates with a fans in the gallery on his way to the green Adam Scott struggled with his game for most of the week but got things rolling at the 3rd a birdie gets him back to +2 after a bogey at 4 over at the 6th Adam Scott see if he it's a good one that's a good looking shot there a birdie at the most difficult hole on the course then looking to close with another at the 18th Adam Scott that's a good way to finish a 69 for Scott tied for ninth is eight top ten in the last 14 majors the defending champion Justin Rose looking to make a Sunday push first at the third a birdie back to +1 then at the fet Justin Rose but for an eagle enough the slope and then along the side of the ridge moving to the right got a lot of speed Justin Rose gets to 1-under par with the first Eagle of the day recorded here at the par 5 but he was unable to recapture last year's glory but his play in the finishing hole paid homage to the 99 champion Rose for birdie this moves pretty good to the right about that tribute to Payne Stewart Justin rose with a birdie at the finishing hole plus three for the championship tied for 12 Jason Day has three runner-up finishes in the majors the 2011 Masters and US Open and again last year at Marion he was quietly hanging near the top of the leaderboard his approach at the second excellent swing out here yeah this is one of the better swings on the tour if you ask me John powerful but yet in control and that's a beauty they're one of the better ones we've seen today Jason Day with a chance for a rare birdie here got it another solid finish in the US Open per day a 68 to settle in a tie for fourth the 2011 PGA champion Bradley looking to rebound after a third round 76 at the 3rd Keegan Bradley for his birdie to pars to start and a birdie so Keegan Bradley back to +3 and looking for another at the par-3 9th that's the way to play it you might have another red number on his card now the Keegan Bradley make they can make it two for two so Bradley makes the turn and - Warren on his round with the tee markers move forward at the par-4 13th Bradley looking to take advantage a gorgeous shot within six feet Keegan Bradley with a chance for a 2 here at the par 4 got a strong finish for Bradley a final round 67 to move into a tie for 4th could henrik stenson be the one to put pressure on Kaymer after a good approach at 3 this to go to 3-under and with that birdie the Swede seemed well positioned for a run at his first major but that charge never materialized as Donald Ross is famed and treacherous Turtleback greens got the best of Stenson on Sunday like at the 4th when his seemingly fine approach from 222 yards didn't quite hole and then ahead at the 13th when putting from below the undulating green that led to one of five bogeys on his car of disappointing 73 / Stenson to finish in a tie for fourth dustin johnson made birdie the first three rounds at the 10th now to make it four straight so Dustin Johnson to 2-under par but that would be his only birdie of the day after a bogey at 15 from the native area at 1600 whoa that club got caught up in that wire grass went through the lines left that is that is across the 17th fairway he went on to finish in a five-way tie for 4th after a Miss green at the 1st Fowler plane in the final group with Kaymer to save par despite opening the final round with a five shot lead Kaymer wasn't playing conservatively early on Sunday his tee shot at the short par-4 3rd he's taking it up and across and very much on the same line as Ricky's well cured it up on there Wow Paul's got a stopped wow you think it's just kind of his week maybe another foot that mom who stops the back of the green a two-putt birdie for Kaymer to get him to 9-under after three straight pars to open the round found her a second at the fourth I was going right well right trees gallery Wow so after all of that he does that Wow that was a just thrown away a great break he pitched out just short of the bunker and faced this fourth got nothing but ball oh you're kidding me oh no way from bad to worse he was able to advance it to the green and face this 20 footer for a six good but again it shouldn't have never got to that position with Fowler's second man what a nice recovery but he drops back to 1-under Compton playing in the second-to-last group and now in second place alone for birdie at 5 got it when I start for the University of Georgia grad Fowler meanwhile looking to rebound from his double at four firm enough yes Rickie Fowler and a nice comeback after the double bogey back at four putter saving him yesterday and today after Kaymer missed the fairway and bogey the seventh Compton to save par and close the gap ah man a three-putt bogey unable to take advantage of climbers miscue but he looked to get it right back after a great approach to the difficult eight just seven birdies at the hole over the weekend and Compton made two of them back to within four the leader continued his aggressive play but on the seventh he ran into some problems from the native area now this left with Compton surging himer lost a stroke there but he would respond immediately at the 9th they have been filling this another one of those chefs you gotta make birdie on so within six feet and this for birdie little break to the left here that was not an easy fight folks Compton looking to keep pace at ten this for birdie erik Compton completes a brilliant up-and-down from behind the green to get back within five then Kaymer at the same hole after playing his third just over the green opting for the putter he hits this one too hard that would lead to a bogey on the easiest hole on the course climber back to 8-under but even when he made a miscue his closest pursuers also falter pharmacist by founder at eleven and Compton at twelve lept Kaymer and full control on the inward nine but Fowler kept on fighting for birdie at 12 and he was back into red figures but Kaymer was relentless executing every stroke to near perfection for birdie at 13 solid stroke slice of party's over but Fowler refusing to concede not a hard putt but you just can't get frisky just worked it in the right side so good up-and-down for Rickie Fowler two in a row to climb back to 2-under it was an impressive and memorable week for the 25 year-old who closed with a 72 for a 279 total 1-under par for the championship in a tie for second his best finish in a major but Kaymer kept pouring it on for another birdie at 14 well hey doing double digits how you doing with an eight-shot lead if it wasn't already it was now clear that the final four holes would be a victory procession for Martin Kaymer ahead at the finishing halt a fitting end of a true cinderella story boy what a beauty just as he stroked at the chives Kaman can't think of a more appropriate way to finish for erik Compton an emotional odds firing week a final round 72 to tie Fowler at 279 a runner-up finish for Compton in just a second major appearance ever but this day and this championship was all about the near flawless execution of Kaymer he led from start to finish after a pair of opening 65s and never looked back lapping the rest of the field at Pinehurst closing with a well-earned walk up the 18th to the applause and appreciation of the gallery looking to end the championship in style for par at the last grams at home and Martin Kaymer is a US Open champion pinehearst ah nine under total and an eight-shot win the fourth largest margin of victory at US Open history an absolutely dominating performance by the German who becomes the first player to win the Players Championship and the US Open in the same year Compton and Fowler tied for second and were the only others to finish par or better 5 finished at +2 and for the rest of the field it is wait till next year when the open makes its debut at chambers Bay overlooking the Puget Sound USGA president Tom O'Toole jr. presented the newly crowned champion the coveted US Open trophy and Jack Nicklaus medal Kaymer now with two big wins this year spoke with Steve sands about his amazing run in 2014 Martin you won the players on Mother's Day you've now won the US Open on Father's Day last month in Ponte Vedra Beach you held the lead after every round this week here at Pinehurst you held the lead after every round what is that pressure like well it's a lot you know especially if you play on a different continent but again at the players the fans are very fair and the same here this week so when playing with Ricky today I know it's gonna be very difficult he's a very aggressive player and he can make a lot of birdies if he wants to but overall it was a very nice week very nice day and again you know a lot of credit to the fans and spectators because it was very fair to play how would you compare the way you're playing right now with these two huge wins in the last month two three years ago in 2011 when you were the number one player in the world well I didn't make many mistakes you know the last two two wins that I had in America especially this week I played very solid the first two days and they gave me a very nice cushion for the weekend but a shoot only one over party and pinus on Saturday and Sundays it's good you know the way I played I was very happy the way I kept it together yesterday and that they gave me a good cushion for today growing up in Germany you idolized bernhard langer playing golf he's Germany's greatest golfer of all time he's won the Masters twice you've now won two major championships what does it mean to you to match his major championship resume right now it's just 29 years of age well we have almost a German Grand Slam almost there's only the very show of missing but you know to win to win the Masters it's a it's a huge thing and obviously that's why I need to adjust a few things on my swing in order to play better golf there so winning the PGA winning this one now I hope it will make banner proud I'm sure it will make hole Germany proud and you know it's nice that I could win on Mother's Day maybe it was at four five weeks ago our Father's Day was already a couple weeks ago in Germany and I didn't get anything for my father that day so maybe there works certainly a nice gift right here with that trophy congratulations one thanks very much bye nurse number two the Donald Ross masterpiece in the sand hills of North Carolina the home of American golf for more than a century and hosts to one of the great championships and iconic moments in US Open history the pre championship headline was phil Mickelson's quest to win a championship that he'd finished second in a record six times but that storybook ending will have to wait for another year writing his own comeback story was erik Compton who left Pinehurst with more dreams to fulfill while the popular Rickie Fowler seems finally on the brink of a major breakthrough of his own but the week belonged to Germany's Martin Kaymer who won the second major title of his career in decisive fashion
