definitely a throwback Darrell he is his old school and he's you know he's bringing a different approach to Buffalo and that would be a process to as he takes this team and tries to flip that culture and what he's looking for all that accountability like you pointed out Tony a little bit of old school in doc Maroons approach he's got that attitude too [Applause] the Bears have won the toss they elected to defer so Robbie gold will get things started CJ spiller back teeth for the bills and we talked about the defense at the tops of the Bears how did they improve the other big question mark for the Bears coming out of pre-season with special teams and not just having a new long snapper having a new partner but their coverage units really struggled 21st season of the NFL on Fox is Mills will start from their 20-yard line onto the field by the second-year quarterback out of Florida State EJ Manuel started 10 games last season and I don't think people really understand you know how beat up he was during the course of his rookie season he he tears his meniscus in the preseason then again in week 17 he enters his LCL on early October he was never really healthy last season at any point during the year first and ten from the 20 yard line this is Skinner [Applause] let's bridge the seven-time Pro ball in on the tackle of story games a couple late getting 40 Glenn in to training camp so this is a starting 5 that never really had an opportunity to play together through the preseason so their first go at it as a starting unit CJ spiller the big explosive runner right there and and you've got those playmakers he talked about on the outside Robert Wood Sammy Watkins talked to Bob Bell the wide receiver coach before the game he could do everything that wide receiver spot this is star of secretary here's that front that was really overhauled Jared Allen Lamar Houston and you're going to see that step pursued that's warming to the ball but they've still got some questions here DJ Williams think that that's one of the big answers but Shane McClellan his transition and then here in the second there we all know how good these corners are but that safety position we're action only two minutes to both game yards on the ground way of seizure suck it out at five inside handoff detection he's been only just running back the National Football League 33 years of age takes it to the 49 setting up a slowdown at two for Buffalo but very impressed with what he does you see that yards per carry right there at 4.3 that that's a very nice average for a guy for career and the season and everything and it's that is what's gonna have to happen it because what into this situation right here gene if you're down in addition to hitting in the fan in short situations bring the shaver Shepherd out at two [Applause] side and his bullets who makes the catch and has finally brought down by Conti inside the 20-yard line of the Bears a firm tooth guard connection and I think that you're going to start to see the development of the trust between quarterback and wide receiver this is van de man one-on-one coverage on the outside EJ Manuel said we've got to take advantage of these situations so you have to trust to throw that ball up and let Robert woods go get it it's a little behind but it's in a great spot because he can adjust and Tim Jennings can forty receptions for woods - rookie let the bills for in creation with 15 well to a good start today wait watch it two bills get the staff with time on first down five anyone [Applause] and he's out of bounds around the 15-yard line so manual able to pick up six and he's somebody that wants to learn from the players that have gum before him and EJ Manuel spent a lot of time in the offseason talking to other quarterbacks and you know one of the things that he was told was in a situation like that it's it's not about getting that extra two yards you've got to be smart you've got to learn how to slide you've got to learn how to press that sideline and get out about it's going to be paramount that he stays healthy makes good decisions in the running game along with the passing game about was sound advice when he received from Colin Kaepernick they work out together darling off extra blocker Chris Hairston second down and four mrs. Jackson van McClellan Lamar Houston and on the tackle I tell you what right now watching this bears defense against the run the one thing you are seeing is a lot more pursuit to the ball they're playing with a lot of passion right here in this course will Sutton on the inside getting in disrupting that right away look at all the bear defenders Ted Williams every man held it off Brett Jackson third down and two - Sammy Watkins the rookie out of Clemson mix up a Bills first down his first NFL reception and talking to Rob Moore the wide receiver coach for the bills before the game very very impressed with Sammy Watkins really his entire wide receiving group and really challenging those guys to be helpful to EJ Manuel and he said the sky's the limit for Sammy Watkins he's never seen a guy at this stage rookie coming into the NFL with the ability that he has where will save us went to the right side first of all for the bells the Fred Jackson he takes it down inside the two they're not getting away from this run at all they're gonna challenge that middle that defense all day long is the value that you've talked about the linebackers one thing get caught up but if you start playing the run a little bit too much that play-action really comes into play in the open field it's been a nice drive here toner they've thrown a lot of different things at the Bears defense really kind of kept off-balance throughout this drive again three receivers to the lead second and goal manual into the endzone touchdown [Applause] this is really well designed you put trips out to the wide side of the field you're gonna run your zone read it really kind of put people in a tough spot I want you to watch the tight end on this he stock blocks right here at the bottom of your screen look at that that's a walk in for EJ Manuel so all the attention goes to the defensive left side with that trips formation you get the zone read get everybody to commit and EJ Manuel makes an easy decision to pull it in scamper into the end zone that could happen those linebackers been on that fake Concord to the extra points the bills punch down field try the game manual touchdown add the finger roll [Music] the big thing is the problem you have to account for is that guy in the backfield I'll be your play fig guy but all of a sudden you lose sight of him and he just drifts into the flat and look at all there sell that a little bit more allow your receivers to get down the field Wow those secondary players to kind of bite on that play action they didn't fool anybody in the Buffalo secondary you can one last bridge the tackle wha-wha was made in the Buffalo area when EJ Manuel was not elected to be a cat that Brandon Spikes Cory Graham two guys first-year players in Buffalo were designated and a lot of people wondered why and I loved his response you know hey I've gotta earn my stripes you know just because I'm the quarterback doesn't automatically mean I should be designated captain and he was he was four and six as a starter last year he says I've gotta prove to my teammates that I earned that right to be accountable off the fake to Jackson rolling right checking it now right summers rack down by Ryan Bundy setting up a third down and five and I think this is one of the areas where we'll hopefully see that improvement from EJ Manuel this year a lot of criticism in his rookie season as being a check down guy always looking for the safe throw underneath you need to know where that check that is but you I expect to see him this year take that next step understanding the coverage is in the NFL all has to go getting it down the field a little bit more than then when it's not open checking it down for a first down by Sammy Watkins crosses midfield 25-yard pass play really nice timing on this throw it's a deep in round it's going to be a staple of this offense look at the in and out change the direction right there by Sammy Watkins in the ball thrown right on time right on target EJ Manuel is definitely going in turn and if he keeps throwing balls like that I mean actually he got you down for next week yeah our next week exactly receptions for Watkins [Applause] snort in the backfield depression he goes back at the 43 yard line and really loved the former Detroit lion loss of seven on the play good pass rush my Willie young coming from the top of your screen number 97 is gonna beat Sean trial Henderson EJ Manuel feels it but it's a little bit too late he's not going to be able to break away but a good job of getting down covering the ball don't take a bad play and make it a play that can change everything the game at this early stage don't give him a turnover on your side of the field check it out - chip Jennings [Applause] well that's a really nice job by Tim Jennings Eric piers the right guard is going to go out there and Tim Jennings is able to make a move on him and make the tackle because that that was a well designed play was set up well there's a lot of room for Fred Jackson to run but Tim Jenny makes a heck of a play right here Eric here is trying to get out there but those guys are a little bit more athletic where's alignment exactly just get body make them do something but don't whip on be delivered one in girl there in the first quarter bills must get to the Chicago 40 takes off and he's out of bounds at the 14th or about 4 yards shy of the marker [Applause] I think you can see the confidence from last year to this year in ej manuel on that play right there you know protection breaks down he's movement to his right goes to the right he's right-handed looking downfield the entire time knows where the line of scrimmage is does his best to get the first down he gets out of bound safely first quarter comes fit this scheme very well we've seen Willie young disrupt the bills offense a couple times already now so if you're worried about Jared Allen from time to time but you're going to have Lamar Houston made by the former cowboy Danny but prey so the pills will send out the field goal unit now that's the second time we've seen a screen setup with an opportunity to have some success but this time it's it's now at 7:00 [Music] rough season for the Bears defensively in 2013 and that's an unbelievable graphic right there you look at four of them last year four in the previous nine seasons but there's been some big changes here defensive coordinator Mel Tucker I think tried to keep a little bit of that system in place in 2013 have an overhaul this year with new players a new coach in our story Kate City and a great start for the Bears offensively today well a great start for the Bears offense but the big question we have is about the defense how are they going to be what is their role going to be this year and with ten points given up to the bills I don't think it's any time to panic right now I think they're playing well we've seen some good plays by Willie young who's one of the new additions Jared Allen's ollie gonna grab attention that front is strong they felt that way during the preseason but the questions were linebacker and safety I think the linebackers and the safety position has played well up until this point bills were given a short field following the Marshall turnover kick a field goal and lead the Bears 10 7 I'll Tucker and his second season as defensive coordinator here in Chicago first and 10 from the 20 yard line it's the tide bed there is a flag [Applause] pass interference offense number 85 King Guard penalty first down trying to add Mathew Mulligan I wonder if this was a rough play where Matthew Mulligan is coming in and he's going to create a pick for Martellus Bennett so let's keep all right here's Martellus Bennett coming across there there's the block right there right here you've got Matthew Mulligan making contact before that balls thrown downfield they raised his hand and really your eyes right to him you can't do that if you're gonna go and rub off the arms down low and try to get way but a streaming a very good acting job oh no easy little Hollywood forcing the Bears back to the 10-yard line Jeffrey I'll shot they come out in the next series and they and they run a couple you know that the flea-flicker and things that I really didn't like I think they got away from you know what was working and I think because of that they gave this defense a little bit of help I think that you know confidence is on their side right now say they got a battle back in this thing check it out at 17 [Applause] 25 yard line Forte Preston Brown man to tackle the game 15 yards so the bears now facing a third down and four and they've kind of been their own worst enemy at times - Tony you know coach Trestman talked about the opening game of the season there's a little bit of unknown because not everybody is going to show what they do during the preseason so it's about fundamentals it's about technique it's about discipline and since that opening drive the Bears have kind of had some mistakes that have cost them the opportunity to maintain the ball turnovers bears must get to the 30 [Applause] now to the 48 yard line 70-yard pass play Luke Williams finally brought him down and this is what we talked about with location in accuracy look at the throw by Jay Cutler out in flow our tunnels Bennet catches it in stride and is able to make a play down the field got a player down right now but also a lot of a lot of helmets on the ground now they've all been to Buffalo we've seen one penalty Hansen face but the wing on punt they tried to put me out of one cut that wasn't ours goose is still trying to catch one the intercepts it sets up the bells offense first and goal and take it in front touch down by CJ Keller Nathaniel hacked the offensive coordinator for the bills is calling a really nice game right now he's really thrown a lot of different things little misdirection here again we've got CJ and maybe a different personality this year than last year not having the open rapport with the media and Buffalo as much as he did and Spiller picks up a first down it was a teammate of yours at Syracuse University he was and I can tell everybody that that's in Buffalo Doug is the same person today that he was when I played with him back at Syracuse University and and he wears his heart on his sleeve he loves the game of football he loves the state of New York I grew up on Long Island he's a tough guy and you know he understands that there's a lot of pressure here there's a potential through new ownership is coming there's what's going to happen with the stadium he understands Rob Kazinsky being fired so we talked about the pressure DJ manual is also pressed on the ground since coach I think he's changing the culture he's holding everybody accountable in Buffalo and we've seen it today you know there was a lot of questions about this offense coming on the road against the Chicago Bears here this afternoon and they've played ball that got themselves tied up here in the fourth quarter with six in a little over six and a half to go around the head coach at Syracuse before you sucking air with the pelts since James honest and works his way to the pears 35 yard line as we approach six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter here in Chicago on kickoff weekend we talked about the play call in the first half of the Buffalo Bills kind of kept Chicago off balance they they haven't been able to get that rhythm here established in the second half dr. Rowan and his guys have kind of struggled here Chicago really dominating second half of this game so far [Applause] those were committed seven in the second half [Applause] spectacular cat [Applause] I thought he elevated too soon Tony I didn't think he was going to be able to suspend in the air the way he did to make this catch coming from the slot he floated there for a little while I mean I thought he jumped too soon right here that's just tremendous concentration no.1 the big hit is going to come from Chris Conte he's exposed he's vulnerable with a safety lurking great finish by Robin works on a five yard pass flight [Applause] throws away [Applause] let's go back and take another look at this it looks like he's gone up too early and he just kind of hangs there and as he's coming down I mean the full extension and there you can see how he's exposed he knows that Chris Conte was in the area nice job holding on that ball Chris copy hit it a little bit but he held nothing against his body did that catch that's a big play right there second out of 10 good shot hand off diction is met by Jonathan Bostick flirting log up coming under five minutes remaining of the fourth looked as though EJ Manuel on that one should have should have pulled that on that zone read it on the outside to account for him [Applause] fans on their feet here at Chicago fir down a [Applause] down dumps it off it's Jackson and Tim Jennings brings him down at the 15-yard line five yards shy of the marker so the bills will send out the field goal unit timeout is taken by the Bears but I like this decision right here you've got an opportunity for points the Bears do a good job with coverage down the field check it down give Fred Jackson the opportunity to break a tackle and get the first down if not you put yourself in the position to attempt the field goal to take the lead EJ matters does a great job of going to get that ball also bad snap from Erick hood but kept it in play little things like that make a huge difference Doug Marrone chatting with the bills new backup quarterback the former Air Kyle Lord who was traded away from Chicago to Denver in exchange for Jay Cutler and Kyle Lord looking for the opportunity to get somewhere to work with the young quarterback and he knows that EJ Manuel last you missed some time the opportunity in his need to his career to get on the field he felt Buffalo was the perfect opportunity for him to come last year in Dallas 3 Rd chap dead earlier from the right hash Smith place it down carpenters kick is good so with just over four minutes remaining that soccer field the bills have gone back on top as they capitalize following the first interception of Kyle Williams nine-year career back in Chicago Bill's back on top they have scored 13 of their 20 points off turnovers they covered throwing two interceptions Brandon Marshall Bennett a turnover back in the first half and it's the bills by three well going back to what Marc Trestman said the opening week of the NFL season there's so many unknowns and it's really what you do how you control it being disciplined fundamentals technique these Baer turnovers have been their Achilles heel this afternoon so Jacob leaves the Chicago offense back out onto the field 28 of 37 two touchdowns two picks in our Chicago offense which averaged just over 28 points per game last season under Marc Trestman in his first year an opportunity with four minutes remaining now by three well this is why you build your team the way that Marc Trestman is building his team that have the opportunity to win offensively late in the game and Marshall in the slot they're stolen out all shot Jeffrey [Applause] four pairs first down he is very smooth in the open field he's got that style that looks like you glide there's only been one player that I've ever watched that that really has that ability and that's Gale Sayers where it just looks like everything is so effortlessly as he moves forward and Heat Gale Sayers is in the stadium today introduced to the crowd prior to the game able to come down at balance well we talked about Stephon Gilmore not being in the lineup today because of an injury and Corey Graham stepping and he has done a heck of a job he's got one of the interceptions that led to a touchdown for the bills and has played really really well all afternoon hard fall right there no more forceout rule that went away a couple of years back still waiting for that one situation where you carry the layer out of bed it's called catching carry we've never seen it know that we ever will never seen that radar that's true that's true let it down at 10 and his forte but he is by Brandon Spikes he's mean the intangibles of being in New England and knowing what what it takes to win a championship bringing that preparation that style here to the Buffalo Bills and then and then the ability to make plays like that what a great feel of seeing that develop hitting in the backfield and making the tackle third down and two three minutes remaining fourth quarter [Applause] bears must get to the 40 Hey it's Brandon Marshall / Chicago first down up to the 45 but there is a explanation of why that offensive holding was picked up really never got the explanation from the officials just said we're gonna pick up that flag and then play continues well the Bills have capitalized on all three Bears turnovers Buffalo scoring 13 points off takeaways and they lead by three two minutes remaining fourth quarter bears facing a third down and one probably the truest statement we've heard all weekend visiting with the Bears and the Bills was what Marc Trestman talked to us about and the week one opener there's so much unknown the opponents not going to show things we haven't showed things so how do you react to that unscaled look what you haven't seen on film the way you do that is make sure you're you're fundamentally sound your technique is great and you're very disciplined in those turnovers which are the difference are the result of not following that procedure [Applause] the toshka for Chang [Applause] first down 39 I like that call you know it's 30 short and you know sometimes a lot of people say let's get downhill I'm the other way let's get outside you've blocked down from the outside you pulled your mom Bushrod out and you give the ball to extra yards you should probably go and find where he is and covered try and take him out of the game cuz right now he's just taken home with this coordinate right yeah and J Carlos seems to know players have their eyes back they're looking at the ball they're making a play contesting the point of the catch it's a good no-call by this crew what Cory Graham has done a heck of a job stepping in for Stefan Gilmore gilligan against many of his former teammates purge out at one who was intended for homes again it is Graham on the covers for the bills of the Bears will send out the field goal unit to try and tie this game this is man-to-man coverage you are all by yourself with the game on the line working right here you can see why Jay Cutler is upset with the way they're calling the game this year that could have been illegal contact beyond the five yards here is Robbie cold hit from 40 water earlier this will be a 37 yard attempt he's made 16 in a row here it's 30 seconds remaining has tied the game at 20 [Applause] [Music] well kickoff weekend Darrell you talked about some of those other games the Browns have come back to tie the Steelers Eagles have tied up the Jaguars same story here in Chicago yeah it's been a great game and you know you get here you have an idea what you think you've read everything you've watched your film you're preparing for the game and then you come here and you meet with the Bears and you feel good about their chances then you meet with the bills and you feel good about their chances and then you come here and watch the game and it's been as entertaining as we hope that would be and the questions that we had at the top you know what does the Bears defense going to be like that they make enough for the right changes in the offseason how is EJ Manuel gonna play in his second year being healthy and I think there's positives on both sides I think for the Bears fans this this defense has played well I think the linebacker level in the safety level which were really kind of the two big question marks coming in have done a nice job EJ Manuel has has taken a good first step here in opening weekend in 2014 so I think there's a lot of positives for both fan bases to be excited about America's game of the week coming up following the bills and the Bears most of you will see the kick boys 49ers we are tied at 20 here in Chicago bills with two timeouts remaining interesting you see whether their approach will be right this time I would expect them to to run the football and get into overtime and take your chances there I don't want to make a mistake here with Robbie Cole thinking for the Bears he's got he's got a big leg dark maroon will be happy with the effort his team has put forth at this point and take his chances in overtime okay Cindy we're gonna sit so on kickoff weekend we are headed for overtime here in Chicago bill scored 17 consecutive points in the first half after falling behind seven nothing bears tie the game at 17 in the third quarter and carpenter 33 yard field goal with just over 4 minutes remaining in the fourth to give Buffalo the lead and then Robbie Gould tied it moments ago though a reminder both teams will have the opportunity to possess the ball at least once during overtime unless the team that receives the opening kickoff scores on a touchdown or if there is a safety during that opening drive and each team receives two timeouts at all replay reviews are initiated from the booth if they are still tied after 15 minutes of all the time it goes in the books as a time you interception so a couple of costly mistakes the terror deceptions led to ten bells points Braille receivers to the left first down again a 15 the other thing Tony we talked about his production but just the conditioning I mean he's got to be consistent in tremendous shape now here we are going into overtime the opening week of the season and he's just he looks like it's the first quarter yeah in the offseason for Bears fans how much better than our defense get four bills fans is EJ Manuel going to take that next step in year two and here it is right here for the taking hope both sides Stiller comes to the outside let's up a first down and bodily forced out of bounds by Chris Conte Spiller picks up 14 yeah and they gave up contained to the left CJ spiller you have to understand how dangerous he is Jared Allen down at the bottom right here he's going to get turned inside and then Charles Tillman comes inside right there number 33 instead of coming off the edge to secure it pass contain allow CJ spiller to get outside that Jared Allen's got to go up and press that corner get up the field a little bit blew his head back inside we gonna hit that bubble of the megavision for your linebackers [Music] but the 35 on first down and slow it not much picks up one setting up second down and nine this would be a huge confidence boost for EJ Manuel in this situation take that next ball up the seam and Mike Williams is gonna go get it now here's the guy that makes all the difficult catches now you know Chris Conte is sitting there and he's zooming in right on you you go up you make the catch you can see Mike Williams he's already located Chris Conte he gets that ball secure takes the hit holds on battle second overtime game of the NFL lost to Atlanta last December this is Jepson through the 49 brigade of five pounded it down the field this is what we saw early in this game Darrell and I like I like to play call and I like keep it on the ground short passes and go 20 and that that's the right word Kenny they stunned the Chicago Bear is it you know a team that we knew what their offense was capable of we were we were questioning how good their defense would be what role they would play this season and and they play well this this afternoon that had some issues but really the offense for the Bears on an afternoon on opening weekend where the mistakes can really bother you too many critical mistakes by that Bears offense so the Pels win it now to Atlanta overtime Falcons
