they've been camping out at Rupp Arena and Lexington since last night it is a packed house better than 23-thousand turning out and what could be a battle of June of the Bakke players in the country here in Harrison of the Wildcats had Marcus Paige of the Tar Heel charmers for the tie [Applause] this a matchup of two of the winningest college basketball programs in NCAA history that char hills of North Carolina facing the number one team in the nation the Wildcats of Kentucky hi everybody I'm Marv Albert along with Greg Anthony there's bad news though for Kentucky and and their fans late Thursday night John Calipari telling his team they have lost junior for Alex Poythress for the rest of the season either way severe [Applause] a major loss for Kentucky despite the depth that they have yeah the depths there and his numbers won't blow you away in terms of his impact but he's a guy that was an emotional leader and really one of those guys that makes the momentum swinging plays that could be the difference in a tough ball games oh he will be missed for Kentucky at a very popular player with teammates and and fans let's take a look now the AT&T fast analysis then let's start with Kentucky from a defensive standpoint folks this team is extremely long at times no one on the floor will be less than six six in height they're also very they attack you on defense and they're gonna have to do that today against the preseason All America Canada and Marcus Paige he's had his struggles at times or offensively but he's got to be the catalyst today both whip the ball and off the ball can he get that silky smooth scooty stroke going if he does maybe the Tar Heels get the victory and Marcus has been saying there's something funky going on with his shots both Carolina and Kentucky coming up [Applause] all this history now Microsoft Microsoft on the court as we check out the starting lineups from uptown Thomas Kennedy Meeks the bays nature's loss of weight off to a terrific start Africans 14 points and 10 rebounds JP tokoto makes this team go and does it at the defensive end what is Paige still looking to get into his brew but a major concern is Kentucky this f.push platoon 610 freshman trade while starting for the injured Alex Poythress they are very strong a front with Willie cauley-stein confidence challenge and the Harrison twins in the backcourt with Andrew at the park John Calipari in a sixth season his head coach of Kentucky he's taken five teams to the bottleful won the national title with the Wildcats in 2012 and at the other vent polyphenylene Williams in his 12th season in South Carolina he's 12.0 captainship swatted North Carolina and one at chances the officials for the green Pat Adams and Doug Jones and we are such as I should say Roy wants to it yeah North Carolina the Tar Heels at six inches they lost the bucket in the battle for Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas hasta Ottawa at this Chapel Hill while Kentucky of Jena no and they joke they come off a Hilary tough win against Columbia here at home John Calipari said he had no energy Columbia scores the first 10 points to lead by two at the half with Kentucky able to turn it and came up with the victory Carolina off all of last week's finals week tour then haven't had the kind of practice ordinarily we were getting for the week off but they're gonna have to be in sync here today against the Wildcats at North Carolina [Applause] as always in blue Kentucky and honed white and it's controlled by Kentucky's Andrew Harrison comes out immediately in a 2-3 zone to try to confuse a lung young wildcats here a little bit to start which is Alison which six foot eleven freshmen but in that play there it was the signature of north carolina's for years they were as good as anybody at attacking you after a mate and that was an example over that's an area where I think Carolina can have some success in transition against Kentucky because of all that sighs the question oh can they contain that defensive back where they struggled all year to do it Kentucky is as good if not better than anyone in the country from that attacking the offensive able to get down for Danaher that's a foul is called come on take a look at this justice on this play here really Marcus takes it up on a good job of selling that at it and think that Harrison had extended the elbow although the call does go for Carolina this is Marcus page tokoto and excellent passer [Applause] we're gonna put a home and that's gonna be important you saw the defensive attention that coca-cola he's also got a handsome fine there by Jackson on the interior the price once again Brice Johnson with the pocket Kentucky a team with overwhelming size and yet particularly abrupt numberland NBA prospect which is easily the case for the Wildcats off the steel dresses not a bad looked at my Jackson but one more pass and he would have had page on that wing for an uncontested triple Willie cauley-stein every tenth part seven rebound playing for the injured Alec Porter and while you don't get the same impact defensively with is more about that coming up with the steal Harrison's privacy laws the foul we're about to complement what he can do from an offensive standpoint here the quick hands comes up with the steal and immediately locates his guard they're in transition which allows Harrison to get to the free-throw line foul committed by Justin Jackson Andrew Harrison a 70% free throw shooter averaging seven points shooting holding about 39% you're not gonna see he's strong averages because John Calipari's goes to this lateen system it was a great point and an impressed that all the guys had bought it I mean it is way with rhythm consistent load in terms of minutes but his kids continue to compete and really it was warded him so hard to turn over the ball back to Kentucky when the turnovers here at early on the adjustment hasn't been made by North Carolina in terms of dealing with that length and athleticism of Kentucky in the halfcourt Byrd turnover for these Tar Heels Brett what's your feeling about these but we're teaming system Wireless runs out although it changes slightly with the injury by Poythress is toe to toe with the jumper plan he's going to be important listen I think you can do it and have some success but I don't think you'll ever be as good as you would be if you played the eight but you know Calipari doesn't have that luxury he's basically because he probably didn't expect a lot of these guys as you see the second platoon if you will check it in returning for school it's been a little bit of a challenge but listen it all boys that balls out how do the kids respond and thus far they have responded well but I would be surprised if this continued over the course of the season particularly when they start to get into conference play and start having those true road games this stated as the second platoon came out of block a comfy the dimensional not department to a different style a change of pace that heals how about here the great contest there and it even to gather that defensive rebound and then you list with the terrific read to Lee there on that finish Ulis really is the pure point guard on this roster the guy that gets you going and really attacks you full-court defensively fearless and Devin Booker who also came out with the second unit did not play in the last game against Columbia because of coquito try to set it up and was tough to handle it's been a 9-2 run here by Kentucky been really that when you play in the half court if you Carolina against this Kentucky team the margin of error is going to be very small at swatch transition and early offense would be so importance today you loosen up by tokoto clicker and this is not a good three-point shooting game but Carolina comes racing back as Jackson is able to score but they do have guys that can shoot and you and Aaron had their moment sees three-point shooters Booker is a terrific shooter it just hasn't all come together for him yet and I think a lot of that is because of the Platini that rhythm we talked about just hasn't in there nice ball movement he looks for prey and on the backpack to get it down on the holy page behind the back and then kicks it out talk each other to save there's Jackson on the rock the lockdown offensive foul the song Kentucky a team that hasn't shot the three well that hasn't been an issue for him early on here Kentucky rolling [Applause] [Music] Kentuckians come out sharp they have a 16-8 lead and the last five meetings between off Carolina and Kentucky has come right down to the wire back in 2009 John Wall leading the Wildcats to a two-point win off Carolina with a two-point win the 2010 Kentucky beats North Carolina with a trip to the bottle on the line 2011 Anthony Davis Watson John too late to give Kentucky a one-point lead and last season Marcus Paige with 21 second half points to let the Tar Heels to a five-point victory the all-time corrected 2313 in favor of North Carolina Marcus Paige had a terrific game last year in Chapel Hill he a 23 point 21 of the second half and JP tokoto seven attackers and both those guys are gonna have to play well here today and then the turnovers early on an issue for the Tar Heel the second platoon is on the floor for John Calipari and again the good ball movement [Applause] Marcus Paige went for the steal and almost came up with him but he also left open the best shooters on this Kentucky team and Wofford he makes him pay second three for the freshman Devin Booker there's page on a fadeaway way off the marmots been about that defense when you get in that half court they're so long and we talked about at the top and so active and then they do a terrific job of turning that defense into offense the hands the ability to contest and also still controlling that defensive backboard really impressed with him here they using the screen not able to hit wrongly bodies kept alive and the fittest I price Johnson at 6 points for Johnson and he's played was run the floor extremely well that's an area where through Carolina you want to continue to emphasize but they've got to be a better job of taking care of the ball and getting out a new open floor hooker turn by the old kitchen put the block from the side new old cheese has come on for the first time for North Carolina this is Britt putting move buffer able to stay with him Johnson backs his way and over the hip that's something you don't see often is guys look against Kentucky the ability to score get back to the basket and that's starting to settle down as Carolina on the road seven-point Kentucky late seven minutes gone by in this first half fabulous [Applause] got it might Hey and a foul let the fastest scores and updates for North Carolina Kentucky and all teams of the CBS Sports at the fastest happen the sports fans download the CBS sports app and you can do it now the file is called on jeans of North Carolina and dakari Johnson Willie is the one guy that has that ability to be a low post back to the basket score at this very bar the talents will continue to get better in that area Johnson does a terrific job was establishing that post position and Kentucky record recognizes that and does a solid job of those post entry opportunities for him last season dakari Johnson out of Brooklyn New York was the starting center for 18 of a final 20 games for Kentucky's plate about 14 minutes ago if you had to give the offense [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to the right hand Britt at one point was auntie this concerns her but his shooting now he switched from shitty left headed to right headed over but he he still shoots three throws with you know I've never seen I've seen big guys do it because typically they're shooting the ball in the pink but for a tour player and be confident enough to make that adjustment is really impressive folk said you just don't see this every day not a great shooter but again to still have the confidence to make that adjustment and he's gonna have to be a difference maker on the defensive side here for Carolina as well another player who has pulled that off Booker comes up short the draws the foul Tristan Thompson at plate his cot is long all-american at University of Texas now to the sleepin Cavaliers and playing very well he made the switch in his he's got it successfully he went from left to right and how about he's shooting two footers it's a little easier to make the adjust [Applause] okay mostly it's your right mostly from short range and I've seen it done by big before I've never seen it with a perimeter player especially a point guards okay good start here by Booker accounted for eight of the last nine points for the Wildcats they now redefine teams and as good as Kentucky as look at you start in a sense Carolina getting a better feel for how to deal with the size about Kentucky in the halfcourt [Applause] [Music] down low and Meeks on a fadeaway Florina eight-point lead for Kentucky on North Carolina a reminder Monday on CBS these penises don't fit in the world but they're the only ones who can save it a new episode of Skorpio that's Monday at 9:00 8:00 central only CBS talked about a team that's really struggled from beyond but the two guys who have shot it pretty consistently all season for Kentucky have been Ulis and Booker and they've gotten good looks in rhythm here to start this game and that's a huge boon if you're John Calipari that's the one area as you can see what they have struggled mightily on the season boy if that starts consistently lights out I mentioned Ulis being very successful from three-point land he's not 9 for 17 from from 3 the county leaks on the line touched on earlier the fact cometh wait he has lost to me a year ago in total nearly 50 pounds since he arrives at a Chapel Hill and he's had an excellent evening off this field and already we've seen a little bit of everything from North Carolina its coca-cola to the knock down that slipper we've seen the two-threes all we've seen the man we've seen the two one two extended full-court pressure that forced the turnovers and all of a sudden now Carolina as I said getting the rhythm back in this game here in Lexington yes fourth baby has won the last 12 place whether to gets looking to stop a losing streak that actually began when these cars group of players work we're back in grade school sucks the pistons for our Kentucky silence scissor then it does not most kept alive by quality size well the sky [Applause] traffic and was able to get it back out and the issue really that's been the same all season for care I mean that defense was as good as you can play but they give up the two offensive rebounds there will ultimately Kentucky's able to convert apparently a delay of game called on on Kentucky Marcus Lee returns as does Devin Booker has have a hot hand including three from downtown light pressure being shown here by the Wildcat pension moves it across the steel fence and firing one high off glass a freshman from Britain saw amongst Carolina North Carolina's connected on their last five shot attempt and used to see as we talk about the rhythm offensively the comfort level now with Carolina and it's a key in the halfcourt Tar Heels with him three [Applause] again a pretty crown all about Devin Booker with ten points this time able to score on the cup good job moving without the basketball there in solid execution Rock Kentucky we're looking for a angle Paquito good play by Macaulay Johnson illness and a foul and we was with a nice fine they're off the dribble drive for it dakari toss that Euless really that the true point guard on this team and say what it looked like the defense was said they're on that possession they just don't get the call that's Carolina Isaiah Hicks picked up the foul here's the khari Johnson back to the line Caroline hurry up along with a tutor bizarre yes and both teams tend to play a lot of guys obviously Johannes the ball exceptionally well here in this game it's just been there the turnovers in the second teams opportunities that attempt Kentucky in the lead here and see the pressure on the inbound shooting has not been a strength for either Club North Carolina in fact only 28% from the from the Fila that loss to Iowa and they bounce back quickly against East Carolina sapphire tilted their way off nice touch by Kentucky that was a little bit force there by tokoto on that shot you see here with the contest and they're gonna say that that's on the pathology on us in there what we call the Steinbach on the floor [Applause] set up a region is called it is oculus see John Calipari not pleased with that solo 20 remaining in this first half Hey played by Judas who got picked on by Johnson and the ball if you pluck it out really probably the best all-around frontline defender in college basketball it does a great job of just moving his feet laterally against the smaller quicker page to force the tunnel six turnovers committed by North Carolina [Applause] now guarded by Joel berry less than point guard for North Carolina [Applause] cauley-stein on the shot clock well not to those I discovered by parties contact with the rim so it is a shot clock violation he had best all-around possession defensively though for Carolina Valley defended that entire possession but then didn't get hurt on that offensive glass their sign with an opportunity or not able to convert Baro Anthony towns returning coming on for the car Johnson for Kentucky [Applause] don't forget it's inside what's a gold tents so Bryce Johnson with the bucket he now has ten point and when they've been able to get the ball on the Block they've had success clearly as towns comes open the weak side the goal Timothy when they've been able to feed the post consistently in a half court they have gotten rewarded North Carolina let's just see if they can maintain an over the course of his games nice pass off the bounce by just a great feed nice little give and go action there between he and cauley-stein and get him to the line foul on Brice Johnson cauley-stein has improved his free-throw shooting from last year at 248 he's up to 63% at the line there we go you have that ability why am i just providing suffice John Calipari saying that he thought what we call inside we believe for the NBA he was surprised that he made his return he finished junior season yeah you know coming off that injury where they didn't have him you're the final 40 he felt like he just from sweet as his development on this well follows on wild and a ton about six-point lead for Kentucky excellent shooting for two teams not noted for their shooting ability 10 of 17 from the field and how about 9 of 14 for Kentucky to the odd stat or lack of the stat no block drops to this point by the Wildcats of Kentucky they had them and I think you got a credit Carolina I think they're starting to establish their identity they're getting away from the three-point shot and I think that's been critical to their success that we took seven threes that win old Eastern Carolina and your ability to make shots off the time is determined by the shots you take in the shot selection much improved in this game they got to the rim they got out early in transition and they've developed a rhythm here offensively even though Kentucky is also shooting it at a high level how about North Carolina for their last set from the field over the last six minutes you see that defensive field goal percentage allowed by Kentucky and for me again I get back to the discipline that showing you the shots legends are better if they can take to better care of the basketball they can have to test twice Johnson when he hit his first five shots and off the battle for the loose ball now on Kentucky we talked about the energy and activity of Kentucky coming in Carolina started to display a tremendous amount of activity winning some of these loose ball battles being the aggressor here the last four or five minutes foul on Booker that is his second on the balance page getting it digoxin he now has 12 Hornet and a terrific screen was set there by tokoto to free him up here on that baseline [Applause] the foul is called cauley-stein the previous play but then cauley-stein beautiful finishing and execution within cauley-stein after the offensive rebound here playing the passing lanes that's just impressive when you think about a guy at 7 feet tall with the kind of lateral quickness and change of direction ability that he possesses that's one reason why this Kentucky team defensively has been so impressive sohcahtoa committing a foul tuesday night Tennyson it's a conversation unlike any other as elite women of sports share their perspective on today's hottest topics don't miss We Need to Talk that's Tuesday night at 10:00 only on CBS Sports Network the 24 hour Home of CBS Sports nine points out with cauley-stein he needs Kentuckians scoring average in chat box along with seven rebounds seven minutes development Spurs head snaps in that shot deflected short Tar Heel still with it Tokiko by Jackson Jessica Louis meets but in the [Applause] [Music] I thought it was the right note pause towns tried to sell it by falling great strong need that move there to say about this there's rise [Applause] who will go to the line she leaks here physically could match up and you see watch here yeah that's definitely a little bit act in a cell that play good no call by the officials by the last two possessions though for Kentucky now they're starting to have an impact on that offensive glass foul committed by Brice Johnson North Carolina that's his his second so his trey lyles who was in the starting lineup [Applause] with all the Kentucky players wearing a mop jerseys and they they scope the guys on the bench still had Vermont with wearing number 22 point versus number and many fans in the stands doing the same this kid has really just connected with his Kentucky faithful and this there's been another offensively down there by town they double up on town Andrew Harrison albatraoz Kentucky to fight to the neck few possessions for the lifecast at home it is put gone by Kennedy news [Applause] just under six remaining first pack Andrea's Mallinson and Britt wants to rocks able to get back [Applause] it's done by brick [Applause] this is warning Kentucky given Carol a little affair all great kick ahead 25 shocker [Applause] that's his first Faysal of towns away from the basketball you see there [Applause] double bonus [Applause] [Music] double bonus the other way Kentucky's at the line [Applause] yes ulis nihlus fighting in space and then back in the hands of new analysis terrific play by Ulis got caught in the air but had the presence to see he had that lob slay they're just not able to convert the oxen Evan again in close could not fit trouble with the handles there on this possession when they have not been able to get Marcus Paige going here in the first half yet to convert a feel role try to set it up with a lead had very little room that Booker to his right and a timeout taken Kentucky with a 38 one night read on North Carolina coming up on AT&T if 1/2 Adam Zucker Davis what's going on today pal advanced phone sets will tell you about 10 things that he has learned so far this season that's coming up on TMZ break I know you have maybe two or three things yeah I can't have that I can't go that out but I'm gonna start with youth in their freshman as heralded as any class in the country they've been impressive Arizona you don't get a chance to see them out west led by their freshman phenom Stanley Johnson and the big 12 just continues to the show consistency had an opportunity here Lexi to see this Texas to domineer even though they lost they didn't have that point guard Isaiah Thomas you know Huggins has done a great job down at what to that conference is strong and will be a force all season long now's the CEO of Carolina and the bonus double bonus situation for Kentucky Tar Heels facing pressure once again they've been doubled and that's exactly if you're Kentucky what you want it you want to speed even Oh Caroline wants to play fast they didn't want to go that fast on that possession and they made Carolina there and then force him into a difficult opportunity even though they had numbers they had the wrong guys trying to convert on the numbers tonight turn over to North Carolina Kentucky with five [Applause] coming up on three minutes remaining first half there was contact Andrew Harrison on the drive by Hicks Isaiah Hicks caught on the foul Aaron Harrison sophomore out of Richmond Texas Jeff site outside of Houston a hero of last season's winning three pointers of ugliness Kentucky's mr. Vick shop Monday on CBS a special holiday episode of NCIS Los Angeles photo surprises everyone would be talking about it a kid a jolly mood MC is Monday at 10:00 9:00 central only CD and set time of year the holiday season now the one thing about getting to that free-throw lines for Kentucky it allows him to set up their pressure full-court defensively and you've seen Carolina's struggled with this at times I should point out you mentioned the holiday season we'll get a shot eventually of the pants that you have selected to go along with your CBS apparel this afternoon it will a few comments from people healthier resident neutral let's say and Marcus came with his first bucket the nice attack at around he's also had his struggle gone pencil to come down and drills the triple point lead for Kentucky as this come about two and a half and the first half marketer off the stove other draws the foul take a look as Kentucky here in transition just a great job of coming across and reading the defense there you see how tokoto commits to that penetration and it allows the brothers who have that terrific chemistry to read one another and get that triple laughs all talk together 74% a couple of changes sohcahtoa was a guy like cauley-stein who had his troubles at the free-throw line a year ago 50% much improved in that area although unable to convert on the first Justin Jackson has come back in Jackson cinemas a senior out of what's the North Carolina vacant his bunk Patel hits one of two big stretch here for Carolina from the defensive standpoint four point game because you can cut this into about a six eight point lead here you gotta feel good about yourself one in the Hat time when you struggle with turnovers and Marcus Paige unable to get on track one of the chief to the point hello Andrew Harrison is on the floor Ulis gets it out his Hornet of the game eight points and conventionally mystogan opportunity of near Kentucky to put this thing out of reach minute 45 here for both teams aah couldn't throw over this shoulder pass to King that about Blanche touched by Aaron Harrison nice fine there they're just unable to gather on that possession was pretty wild checks back in Aaron Harrison sitting job party foul on Fatah here it is on Joelle Jean and yet you know karl-anthony town didn't get the benefit on a couple calls earlier there he does as he draws that offensive foul Joelle James go 610 about Chu eating again last season as a starter for North Carolina that injury set him back minute and a half remaining first half Marv Albert great Anthony for at Rupp Arena and Lexington Kentucky that will be a traveling violation called an Andrew Harrison lost the ball carried out of bounds also traveled one thing you do know the stove with Kentucky where Ulis is in the games their offense seems to have a lot better rhythm when he attacks the rim he's attacking to set up his teammates when the Meritage tend to do it their teammates if they can't get it in it about Venus [Music] [Applause] hey stop my illness got a piece of it Sahil is keep it alive sentence without hit that it's tipped home basket fast they're both Carolina's distant past in the momentum here of Kentucky 12-point differentials final minute first half [Applause] yes execution they're the half-court we'd buy Harrison and utilizing that pin down final seconds of the half Hokuto he has struggled in this first half came up short but tight on the clock did not get the official indication that the half is over [Applause] I think Kentucky misread McLaughlin thought it had ended you know the shot clock horn had gone on the war Williams complaining about that right now the rock so 7.6 that that's not correct they also have to determine in terms of the five let's take a look here you saw it the clocks off in the clock distro so they have to determine whether or not there was or how much time was still on the clock when Kentucky got possession so here's Kentucky Greg with 49 points against North Carolina in the game this past Wednesday against Columbia 56 points for the entire contest let's take a look here the clocks at 9:00 and see where it stopped and stopped right there I said probably about one and a half seconds roughly left on the clock the officiating crew Tony green and Pat Adams and Doug Shouse over it's always tough to determine because we're going slow my that day we were going real-time here and see the clock then you know what though the issue though is there was no timeout call by Kentucky so I don't know if you can then reward them possession because they basically threw the ball down the floor that's what Lori Williams is talking about he say look they didn't call timeout they were trying to advance the basketball that should be in the end of the half [Applause] [Music] and bookshelves coming over to explain it it'll be Kentucky ball from their backcourt and they've determined four seconds that is a huge break for the Wildcats that's plenty of time to get an opportunity special with a guy like you listen Towson Aaron Hansen fire what happened [Applause] that has been on fire from downtown I tell you he got a pretty good look how about that I mean he shot that in rhythm from about 32 feet almost knocks it down and that would have possibly been a little too much for Carolina toll to come on the road but as it is it does not and let's see if the Tar Heels can regroup Kentucky with a 15-point lead here at the half and Lexington now let's go to Adam Zucker in our New York studios a 15-point advantage for Kentucky as we head to the second half Marv Alvin Louis Greg Anthony a very impressive performance by the Wildcats in the first half and John Calipari was concerned after the announcement of the season ending a loss of Alex Co press a very important player for the Wildcats he didn't know how his guys were going to react because he thought it was a very emotional situation well you know what they react it would probably their best half a basketball offensively and you know they've done the job in all seasons defensively and they did it again in this game they've been able to turn over North Carolina they force 10 turnovers in that first half that soak late led to 13 and that activity but what also for me has been really impressive is convened their ability to knock down that three point how about at 14 that shoots under 30 percent there's 6 of 12 in this first half and really credit Tyler Ulis with a lot of that this guy's got four sits there in that first half no turnovers and those forces all led to three-point mates you see the the excellent shooting North Carolina also has a shot globe of the six of 12 from downtown really stands out for team that shoots 28 percent during his course of the season a look at our microphone Microsoft Surface first half the statistics and we're ready to go here in the second half two things are going to have to happen in terms of the rebound and Kentucky's born a half from impact there at leaf but if you're Carolina you've got to do a better job of taking care of that basketball and secondly you've got to get Marcus Paige going offensive the other feeling he's Walsh's confidence I don't think there's any question is far more tentative and his decision-making and even his attack with the basketball and that's a huge issue when you're talking about the best player on your team so North Carolina in possession as Paige guarded by Ulis and you know starting this second half as John Calipari continues to shuffle the rotation Paige lost possession that recovered his Johnson [Applause] leaving University from Kentucky John Calipari has planned the guys who played the test this is the goose that really allowed them to create some separation in that first half and he immediately starts him here in the second and that includes the curry Johnson who is just throwing that pass on the bounce along the baseline and puts Trey Lyles who who did start the game Tyler Ulis remaining at the point Devin Booker have a hot hand early [Applause] letting a blocked rocket was actually of the game for a team that a second in the nation in lost Chuck knew Elias call for this foul and a good job at the car a Johnson coming over on the weak side and see Lau's there catches him across the floor on there and Johnson who was terrific really the one bright spot for Carolina net first have won six of seven to the line the Kentucky is second in block shots these are huge donations in bra shops are their colors red if is their scarlet in there's down it is unle work of course these point guard on you at LDS 1990 champion team what I what I would call most you play the entire season with a boat until my duty and I started yeah there's something you saw that it extension of the pressure there by Carolina to force the turnover where they had success remember earlier happenstance in a Lana was really do it running after makes and misses and it hurt Kentucky can turn the transition in here that kick ahead there before the defense can get set allowed for the attack there in Carolina and Ulis thought for the foul and now there will be changes made by Kentucky Willie cauley-stein has checked in with karl-anthony towns the Harrison twins [Applause] they say timeout having difficulty inbounding Kentucky with that all right Greg let's take a look at the 82 fence analysis kind of a revisit from your earlier point we felt coming in that good margin stage that Paxson put his imprint on the game and unfortunately he has not been able to get it going only the one made field goal here in that first half and just not having the kind of game that he's gonna have to have for this Carolina team if they want to have a chance here and he's the first to say that he just feels he he's off there's something funky going on with his shot perhaps he says he's not holding his pot okay here's its feel Paige was reaching in there's no call but now the the foul is called as Andrew Harrison took it the hill the rent first one can't be lazy with passes across the port against the went up Kentucky you can't play east/west basketball fuel you got to be in attack mode off the dribble towards the paint otherwise they're gonna get deflections and steals and you know getting back to Marcus Paige one of the issues and me watching him is that his shot determines how he plays if he's not making shots it's affecting the other area of his game and as a junior you can ill afford to have that when you're the best player on this team your best player can't be your question right now as terrific a career he's had that's been the issues for Carolina Justin Jackson coming back the foul at the tej try to not get away from Andrew Harrison and now six points with those two prints off biggest lead of the game for the Wildcats of Kentucky there's pain yes a free from bought this page and let's see where he takes that shot from here on a great point in a terrific play design and meets with a nice delivery on the frost hand cross left foot pass keep in mind last year against Kentucky Paige had 21 in that second [Applause] again after a basket carolina and a great look ahead there by paige johnson continues to run the floor and they have hurt kentucky consistently with their bigs being rim runners kentucky not doing a good job of transitioning from offense to defense now that goal ten naked 15 points for brice johnson got off to the quick start [Applause] in the starting lineup and much playing time he now has five points at all [Applause] series of moves down low to the power Kovach Larry Johnson trippin Ali and reunion show that'll be Wensley starting at 8 7 central only CBS has slowed down and running the floor averaging about nine point six worried about this season playing about 18 minutes again I mean those numbers if you project out are spectacular really and he's got one guy at this stage that consistently can score lepak to the basket and he also does a great job of drawing fouls in his postgame as well they drift back on the floor [Applause] right again another box for ha Harrison that's my father's paid possession bill games has had catches but could not Corral them at the rent wide-open three Paige on the drive kicks it out and whoop came up short another opportunity more hisses hey with the three and that's a great recognition there by total dough to get Paige this shot he's knocked down two triples in a row here and again a 16 point lead but just under 16 minutes so tons of time if you're Carolina the question now in this second half is can they get stops defensively against the Wildcats [Applause] away from the ball hold holding foul on trip and Kentucky hasn't always shot at well this season but one thing they do well is attack that offensive glass here Klaus with the putback it'll be the CBS Sports twenty second vote North Carolina and Kentucky will be involved next weekend in Chicago at the United Center North Carolina will take on Ohio State and the Wildcats play the Bruins of UCLA and say what bat Mata continues to be the job at Ohio State we know about the impressive resumes and programs that Kentucky in North Carolina and then Steve Alford even though he lost you know two guys exactly from the beam Jordan Adams and a lot of talent from that camp that UCLA team they have reloaded they've had struggled earlier on but I think this find their way the game against Gonzaga to Arizona to overtime last week coming up on five minutes gone by in this second half Lewis Britt lost his balance [Applause] I'm killing like he just doesn't make maketh play always seem to make the right decision with the basketball 555 freshman from Lima Ohio who has been very effective shooting for free thank you please put three from downtown in the halfcourt execution by Kentucky only just good job of screening and also good screen recognition here is Michael and as mentioned earlier Kentuckians shooting coming at you today from three-point range just 28% Reinold running hook by games file is called in as I'm Kentucky is Marcus Lee picking up his first [Applause] good job in terms of trying to come up with that defensive bag for but Carolina look you're not having one of your better days but they'd showing flashes in this game [Applause] Harrison it's number 2 1 & 2 Harrison Stein comes on the Marcus Lee Spalding Stein has had a solid game takes eight handles against unis there's page two three yes so he has hit three of four from the field has been from downtown Brooklyn at the save and jump in the hands of caves tokoto his passes have been awful came into the game bleeding that was an encore and a great job with Johnson running the floor and Ulis worth of delivery Junction [Applause] welcome back in Kentucky starting to impose a will defensively in here nice kick a hit by Harrison didn't you list with the nice delivery to the rim run from the Carrie Johnson the chemistry that this group is showing so difficult to play as many bodies as John Calipari is playing but even though Ulis is not what Anthony Davis was it's in a lot of ways he's a guy to gives him great balance on the floor and tries to keep everybody happy on a team that says low head has the Wildcat strong move North Carolina very just gave our table destroy North Carolina despite trailing 64 48 shooting 50% and close to 60% from downtown bread on that foul has his second yet they're getting blown out well the two things they're getting killed on the on the on the free-throw line you know they're they're - 13 17 or 21 is Kentucky they've only attempted six and in the turnovers you know 13 turnovers that led to the run-out opportunities for a team in Kentucky that you cannot give those many opportunities to Devin Booker calls to the traveling violation so North Carolina back in possession Joel berry freshmen three-time misfit basketball in the state of Florida good bang and that's something you would not have seen a the ability to have that second jump here after the Miss and that's really because of the ability to lose all that way he is far more active in athletic drill this off on a three part of 10 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right out of it and you know as good as Kentucky's been 14 points not insurmountable great effort here how about the block Bob Meeks coming in showing again that athleticism and then in the open floor here with the attack job area John Calipari Kentucky officials last night and earlier today asked two fans here at Rupp Arena to be respectful in North Carolina this obviously a cloud hanging over the fortunes of the Tar Heels the revelation of the investigation by one-time federal prosecutor and several media outlets who have claimed that North Carolina has kept football and basketball players from early football and basketball academically eligible through classes that were quote as Hulk boldness carolina officials are now waiting to the result of an NCAA investigation was outside condense ability hired by the school and a one-time federal prosecutor to made the charge which says he does not feel that hitting coach Roy Williams had anything that all argue with this to talk about earlier with Roy who's saying what a sad situation it is and the school and obviously all this certainly putting the disproving process but we all have to wait and see what Keith and Holly is of the investigation yeah you know I definitely want to comment on that the little way here is Carolina showing some fight cutting it down to 12 here against Kentucky CBS sports college basketball coverage is sponsored by Jared the Galleria of jewelry Microsoft Surface m5u and celebrate the holidays by experiencing the new Buick the Kentucky lead over North Carolina is down to 12 at one point the Wildcats led by as many as 19 as we headed to commercial we're talking about the the charges and some of these statements that were made regarding North Carolina and the academic program at Emory has lit words to say about there's no doubt that there was an issue in terms of the academic fraud that was committed but it comes with a basketball program you keep in mind Roy Williams was at Kansas when this stuff is alleged to have all occurred and the fact that there has also been accountability we've had it with attorneys officials who've lost their [Applause] one of Lachlan my time with is impressing literally similar to the one we showed at the top where he comes over provides that help and it just times it beautifully there he could have literally grabbed that one out of the air beautiful play by the big fella but listen there's been accounting processes job the academic let's just say yeah let it be written countless others and the process still has to play out but I don't necessarily think it's fair to just say that this is a problem that Roy Williams had there's something has a pull and they lost six of the top eight dismissals well the price to defend it is another turnover committed by Kentucky here they seem of just lost their mojo a little bit the energy and activity not nearly as good as it was as that first half was ending and you can see Carolina's confidence starting to grow here with Ennis again with Marcus cage beginning hit shots early on in this third quarter that's Paige with it a rainbow and the tip on weeks weeks getting inside on a box out and it down eight unanswered points by the Tar Heel by far the best stress that they played in finding gets to your point Marcus Paige has done the job you know four five Harrison able to get inside for that finish MAOIs is finishing with the reverse this is Vincent owing glass I don't know what hits from three-point land Kentucky's lead is now 66 to 57 and it doesn't allow Kentucky to build momentum they just score on one in and then immediately you're it let's push it back down and get that in transition ten minutes to play second half Lumis but the shredder sent moved by by ulis and now Fowler scalded Ulis took her shot to the calf but we talked about let's hope the young man is okay because he is so important to what Kentucky likes to do on both ends he really changes the pace defensively this looks a little more serious I couldn't tell if he caught a knee to it or if you can't or it's the hamstring let's take a look at that moving a little bit better now oh that's just kind of buckle donning a little bit there [Music] and Gilles has been a major presence seven assists only one turnover then you know what mark for me he's been he's not their best player but he's their most important player because of when you have that much talent and most of these guys are scorers you gotta have somebody that gives you the balance out there and that's what u.s. does offensive the foul is called Brooklyn try to get to Meeks and it's called for the block yeah good job there and turn to the execution by Carolina day is setting a double screen up top for Paige trying to free him up look they're just glad to fight through it Kentucky with their six team fouls rejected his high mountain put the block and suddenly but blocks are coming yet I think that one was by that was the car here comes over and gets that one again he can throw I do like how Carolina is executing here shaking much better scare the basketball playing forceful as they fight to get back in his name [Applause] and suddenly things are becoming black for the Wildcat as soon as you start to compliment Carolina on how good they were offense will be there they get the turnover paid gets it in the traffic and gets double team in Kentucky with a terrific job of making you pay that's what area that they seen have improved their ability to turn those mistakes into opportunities in the open floor Isaiah Hicks checking back in for the Tar Heel just under nine minutes remaining secondhand [Applause] Andrew Harrison Britt chasing him to that baseline routed by just being on Jackson uh clock down to four [Applause] a North Carolina is on it Brett for the front door [Applause] hey heating it up in the second half get this second half reminiscent to what he did last year folks 21 in that second half in the victory for Carolina and also keep in mind without you is offensively Kentucky not getting the same type of dribble penetration and easy looks than the half-court and similar to Kentucky no Carolina struggles which include they also cheat with 28% from downtown this way with that size able to get the angle at the elbow there and in mr. terrific read [Applause] Chuck call is gone that's an hour let's see possession arrow favors Kentucky Marcus a silent major factor but Kentucky something like that check of the game summary both teams shooting very well Kentucky at 57% happen for three-point shooting by two teams that have struggled in that area and that the difference has been at the foul line 17 to 21 at the line for the Wildcat yeah I think that's been one of the big stories in this game Kentucky's far more aggressive but in also I think the Devin Booker's giving him in terms of how well he's shooting the ball basketball but also how well he plays without it again the his movement without the basketball has been critical to their success no doubt about it their best shooter in terms of range with the three-pointer but he doesn't dominate the basketball and I think now you see these guys understanding that strand that he's had a couple games where he's shot as well but not against the elite level competition like he's seen with Carolina and that is a really positive sign when you factor in the loss of Poythress for this young Kentucky team Devin Booker with a good outside touch and with his range stretch with ploys the guys can play the tuba plays in three and has been outstanding here today how about North Carolina they have been criticized in some quarters for lack of toughness certainly not the case here this afternoon they've been physical and I think they've matched that physical toughness up Kentucky but they just have not had an overall look or what the setup is called you can see the courage Johnson's of self-deport explanation it's his second foul so one on one coming up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] for both Carolina's jasmine Hubert six times Caesar has not played much today way off got a piece of the glass that of all back to Kentucky that's did not hit the rim so an opportunity lost because they're allowed it so infrequently able to get to the line in this game that it does allow them to set that press and they're able to come up with the turnover off the shield that Dauntless blocked by cauley-stein even though he missed that free though it was a dead ball which allow Carolina to set that precedent great effort there by cauley-stein and hope it open Carolina will maintain possession [Applause] couldn't find anyone call for a timeout Tokyu Kentucky now five blocks in this second half littles important and has not been a friendly room well they shot it well you can giggity gone left me on that one maybe his time of Ulis back on the floor Julis kicks it out they're gonna swing it a little reset with 15 on the clock is a great job they're presently pulled a foul foul is on the hitch it's it like something happened to Roy Williams on the sideline [Applause] take a look top right camera here you see them right up here this goes down [Applause] don't want to start speculating on what that could be but obviously it's not a positive sign as if it were a bleep spanx certainly hope lawyers all right he's back sitting down now Silas charged to grips with North Carolina [Applause] great coaches and history in college basketball hall of fame 12th seasons at North Carolina 27th as it as a head coach he's run two national titles through seven bottle tours North Carolina 730 wins at all that's nine points for Lyles thanks Brett making his way into a crowd and turn back foul committed by Aaron Harrison yeah but you know you look at this Kentucky group they're gonna miss pointers but with Booker and miles they're two guys from a skill standpoint with that ability to shoot it at a high level but it really just opens up all kinds of possibilities for John Calipari and Gregg you know with Poythress a sideline the two platoon system began to change here today head Lyles out there with both for terms and how you maintain happiness with a roster that consists of nine McDonald all Americans who get back to that in a moment because I know Dave Letterman is very upset if I did not react on Monday Dave's all new with Emma Stone plus a top 10 from the Heisman Trophy winner and then Craig counts down to his final show all new Monday on CBS his answer is all in the toothless we system once you get down to the good girl the lady you know what there have been teams that have played ten guys before not necessarily people attune a lot of success with the kids of water here the design on the Pope Kentucky hitting you with one of those impressions first how about this emphatic finish about a big trouble the entire Kentucky French came out his brief Willie cauley-stein for the hustle play able to get to that loose ball diving on the floor of these Wildcats ranked number one of the nation's record of 10 of those have opened up a 16 point lead on the Tar Heels of North Carolina cauley-stein is really versatile defenders areas of the country you're not gonna see a guy at 7 feet that has that kind of movement and agility but I think a lot of that helped when he played football this district it had played wide receiver in high school you imagine that target in this right I'm thinking a car might be a long time with another four engines I thought when you lined up to block an extra point or willing to call the start that would be intimidating start line tonight to call these line 15 points five rebounds two blocks and four steals meanwhile North Carolina's made some changes with this game getting out of hand after they have made a move thanks for the hot shooting of markets a foul is on Jackson Simmons and you know Kentucky made that statement early on when they just gave it to Kansas by 32 but I gotta tell you I'm more impressed with this performance in this game you know you you're coming in after the heartbreaking news about Alex Poythress you're playing a Carolina team that has shown that they're going to be affected this season and they didn't play poorly and yet you come out with this kind of performance the unselfishness the ball movement the defensive nature in terms of how they attack you it's impressive and Karl towns non-factor one point two rebounds you wouldn't know it by how well they played but that just speaks to the death of this roster the temperature right here bison trucking karl-anthony towns is some players 611 freshman out of Piscataway New Jersey and he is so smooth and so polished for a first-year player he is and you know does it not Shelley you see he was go down there but not necessarily getting the same accolades nationally that you get from Villa before but in part because of the team who plays on he's not the focal point he could have every bit the impact that he went and played on a roster that is not as loaded as the one at this Kentucky team has her outlook is the cooker just fire what up butcher on the other side got pasta pen in contact between Justin Jack citizens Anzu Harrison foul about Jack [Applause] some football it is high school days in a wave a Texas that's fully lined up against I think he blocked it it's impressed I mean you know people look at this guy they talk about well he doesn't have that polished offensive game you know in basketball there are guys that you can win with you'll look at your team and say you know what we can win with this guy and then you have guys that you win because up Willie cauley-stein is a guy you win because up he does so many things well on the basketball floor to help you win out in a lot of ways not to the level that you got with Anthony Davis but in some respects similarly because he could not score a point can have as much impact on the game as anybody else because of the defense to shock rock in the rebound willing to communicate defensively in the decision-making which is improved vastly from a season ago so well James will head to LaVon my geographical advisor and I always feel his travels and his ability pointed out that Willie cauley-stein is from Olathe can't yet I said that's a power out you say yes like you actually know well I knew the outside of the Kansas City I didn't know you something he's got an amazing story to in terms of we don't miss life advisor there well yeah we still do there are several places geographically in America that I am not necessarily familiar with so that's T common core [Applause] that this these are two teams moving forward their outlets and everyone knows how great this Kentucky squad is and I think they will continue to get better but for North Carolina even if they lose today that there's something pop listen Marcus Paige started to look white Marcus Paige offensive and if that happens for this team they're gonna be a factor no doubt about it in the ACC that guy is so important to their success he's the table setter in terms of his ability to scored and assisted but then he gives them confidence as they're gonna get a hook kill against Kentucky and possession goes back over at Carolina miss government has been all Carolina Tuesday there at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and then they have the game at Ohio State diving centers in Chicago at CBS Sports classic and then back home William and Mary Kentucky with a is very difficult schedule following today they tell you CLA I cannot wait for that and Kentucky is heated and I believe he had another tunnel over there by Carolina oh poor baby seal leading to the foul air Harrison unable to finish with the harm there but will get to the line but it's a that's gonna be a heavyweight battle when those two teams you talk about two Spears with programs and communities that don't like each other Louisville in Kentucky foul committed by tokoto fallacy a 70% free-throw shooter [Applause] medic you a record of 11 and old [Applause] Carolina by 40 points to East Carolina coach one time I saw they had lost to Iowa Cutler's in fact I appeared to my eyes [Applause] and that was exactly what took place really an impressive performance on both even in Carolina is a good defensive team as well I mean they've had some terrific stretches to this season just have had their struggles in making plumber' shot timeout is taken against an 80 to 66 lead but a while here the key remaining games on the schedule for Kentucky would you see as a possibility of defeating the one clip well you know honestly I think everybody's gonna happen off to the SEC is down there's no doubt about it but you're always going to get the best on the road when you're the number one team to the country UCLA is going to be a challenge I'm looking forward to that one next week neutral site but then also that lovel game that we touched upon in Florida is a much better team than their record so they've had a lot of struggles here early on but I didn't think Billy Donovan's gonna get that thing turned around they'll be a factor once conference play gets on Gillis about a bank at home Carolina without a two minutes five seconds remaining in this second half I know SIF Davis in the studio took a shot at my sheriff you encouragement he said they will not make the tour but what was one of his in the 10 observations they had under observation about feces so it's very the leave pass access topics to the rim is it nice when tokoto is another guy who's having a pretty solid season not one of his better games today but again a lot of positives Victor Carolina's moving forward Charlie Hills going to the trap first from the backcourt now up front of timing running out it's a 14-point advantage for Kentucky and the foul is called on tokoto the Jaypee would like to have had a few more of these opportunities in the open floor such a gifted athlete very explosive just not wanted as you mentioned that one of his better games today mom you made the point earlier too this is an area where we talked about that often to Levon about Kentucky's ability also to live at the free-throw line as you see Alex approaches it's been a nice amount of applause on the crowds but they because of that size and the way they attack they do a terrific job of getting to that free throw line they put a lot of pressure on your defense in the open court 23 of 29 at at the line one of the major differences and the blocked shots came in the second half 0 in the first half mask indictments fix able to get inside final minute a 14-point lead for Kentucky [Applause] move made by Willie cauley-stein he has been outstanding now on Hicks [Applause] thanks to our producer Jonathan Segal a director Jim Cornell and a statistician Brian Taylor [Applause] arming may be coming up Hurons on CBS down to 45 seconds to play and Kentucky feeling a bit better about things after the squeaking by win over Columbia Columbia did a terrific job to come out that struck first 11 points here in Rupp this past Wednesday they they lead by two at halftime event Kentucky took over in the second half and again by 10 this time of the year Jackson voltage dive at the rebound in Lexington the rest who's here that rope [Applause] over North Carolina [Applause] before we sign off certainly hoping that wrong Williams is okay we saw him take a a still a stench during this second half able to get right back up and sit back on the bench next to his assistant don't you that's the final score of Bob Alvin Greg Anthony from ruff will be back interviews
