ball first a very very pleasant pleasant afternoon here in Charlotte North Carolina when you look at the weather at different parts of the country you better believe a beautiful day here in 50 fields in perfect shape but again the Jets better get ready to play some flawless football nick full getting set to kick it away deep Martin Kenyan Barner not get a chance to rub this one out of the end zone and so the Panthers will start at their own 20-yard line with Cam Newton completing 62% of his throws 20 touchdown passes 11 interceptions he's also run the ball for almost 500 yards and six touchdowns kind of like a machine then well and a very large machine that's what you talk to every member of the New York Jets who very rarely see the Panthers you just it takes you a while to adjust to how big a man Cam Newton is six five he looks closer to six six nearly 250 a quarterback and linebackers body he's gonna throw forward to about the 23 yard line Carolina's offensive line anchored by senator Ryan Khalil in his seventh year out of USC and Newton has plenty of weapons among his backs and receivers fullback Mike Tolbert six touchdowns to lead the scene for rushing and receiving Greg a good look there at the maturity of Cam Newton when he breaks out of the pocket he saw two Jets there knew that there was no way was it going to take a big hit gave himself up the wet down that's a play that I think in his previous two years he had tried to break a tackle a big slam and take this [Music] pushed down across the 30 plus football and he's going to be whistling down at the 31 yard line the official was very definitive in ruling Williams now by contact good move they're getting away and he's down on the ground and it looked to me like the knee goes down the knee is down he still got the football double so it's a first matter for Carolina at their own 31 tries the right side for about for the Jets run defense second only to that of the Panthers in the NFL Muhammad Wilkerson with ten sacks and interception the veteran linebacker Calvin pace in his 11th year from Wake Forest eight quarterback sacks and in the secondary Antonio Cromartie with concussion symptoms in the game against Oakland last week clear to play today and just cleared earlier this morning as he was in the NFL's Parish and protocol which meant from an outside physician had to clear him to play he passed muster this morning beyond speech Smith all day this is Williamson Williams straight ahead to about the 38 yard line Cam Newton coming into this game with more than 2700 yards throwing 495 yards rushing and add to that a few that he had to start this game what does he would a season he's putting again well yes and it's it's the maturity that he's bringing to the position now and it's it's been fun to watch him grow I know it's really been fun for Panthers fans to watch him grow but it's in every aspect of his game he's improving that's all you can ask curtain two he's going to know where he loses yardage back to the 36 yard line in Mohammed Wilkerson leading the charge well this is a an extremely talented defensive line and this play takes so long to set up and you can see the tight end Greg Olson tried to block Mohammed Wilkerson and Wilkerson just throws him on his backside and makes the play talk about a guy on his way to a Pro Bowl season that is Mohammed Wilkerson one of the premier defensive lineman and foot grad Norton putting it away to Kyle Wilson Wilson on the run lets it bounced up the 20 and it takes I'm Carolina roll down to about the 11 or 12 yard line he knows Smith and the New York jet offense take the field for the first time after this in the jet huddle Geno Smith who goes to sleep and wakes up thinking about ball security 20 interceptions for lost fumbles and yet he in the jet still thinking playoffs [Applause] from their own 12 yard line this is ivory for a couple on the offensive line four-time Pro Bowl center Nick mangle the steadying influence upfront and his eighth year from Ohio State and we will keep an eye on zand Tonio Holmes who set the bar high this week by calling the Panthers secondary those weak link in their defense [Applause] at some point then you have to answer for a comment like that he he really wasn't trying to be derogatory Smith outside that catch is made jeff cumberland who breaks free to the 20-yard line the panthers own the second ranked defense in the NFL charles johnson the team sack leader with eight to have a chance to see one of the fine young linebackers in the game and second-year man Luke Kuechly out of Boston College and Carolina kicked off 16 passes this thus far this year safety Mike Mitchell with Portland there is Keith Lee who is in words of many a tackling machine well he's such a wonderful athlete so fast so quick sideline to sideline this coach Ron Rivera says the quickest first step he's ever seen [Applause] sniffing on the rug with a block towns across the 30-yard line you know last week and the Jets win over Oakland Geno ran the ball five times for 50 yards he ran for a touchdown and and he talked about that that's just part of this whole process of him relaxing you know when you come out on a naked bootleg like that and you have that kind of success you move the chains but it did give your offense confidence and it makes everyone on that defensive side of the ball to slow their pursuit justice done ivorie a couple of tough yards and Rex Ryan knows that Geno Smith has to use his legs if he is not going to be the team by just being a drop back quarterback you know Geno was never known as a great runner in West Virginia that wasn't you know running the read option wasn't part of his deal but he's a good athlete and as he saw right there more than capable may come outside the box here's Tino Smith now on second date face of a rush he gets it away Holmes dropped it and wouldn't you know it the guy he makes a comment about the Panthers secondary has one bounce right off his chest and you can work it against the rookie Melvin white he just schooled white with that route can't say didn't look good in and just went right through his hands the bald is ate him alive third and eight with Bilal Powell now in the backfield for the Jets alongside [Applause] and he'll go down inside the 25-yard captain motherland' coming off the corner well Marlin is going to come in from Gino Smith right side and you can there he comes off the corner other than picking you know there weren't enough people to pick him up the Jets did a great job of picking up the interior blitz and everyone along the line that's Gino's hot read and he wasn't able to deal with it Carolina continues its streak now no touchdowns on an opening drive in the last 18 games that's the longest streak going in the NFL there's only 33 yard line 916 to play in a scoreless fourth quarter Carolina welcome back to Charlotte here's Ron Rivera in his third season as head coach of these Carolina Panthers he once played for buddy Ryan the father of the head coach that he won't just run a number of the great bears teams in the middle 80s Super Bowl raised champion with the first down at the 43-yard line of the tight-end breakfast and that's prague Olson's 59th catch of the year he has become a real target for Cam Newton and that's a good look at why that the soft supple hands the ball comes right in there not even a jiggle once he gets it between both his hands and again Greg Olson is actually the biggest downfield threat for the Panthers it's not Steve Smith it's actually gray gold I said first down at the 43 yard line mr. Tolbert and over to about the 45 yard line it was interesting talking to Ron Rivera and to Rex Ryan about how far back their history goes oh absolutely and it does it goes all the way back to the 80s and Ron Rivera at the weight that buddy Ryan taught him did just didn't teach him you know to play linebacker taught him every aspect of defense and the opportunity that he got to pick buddy's brain and you know I think you know reality of it is is it Ron Rivera's just one of those guys that was destined to coach it was in his blood six or seven offensive plays have been on the ground throwing 25 inside laughs ow the fourth-year receiver out of LSU and you got to be a man to run down field like that because you know that there's a safety waiting for you in this case it's Juan Landry Melissa LaFell does not take his eye off that football he looks at in he knows what's coming Landry comes in with a shoulder that's a good clean legal hit but Brandon LaFell holds on to the football kudos to you 36 yard pickup to the 19 of the Jets how about that throat left side place of the 15 you know that grow by Cam Newton we all everybody wants to focus on how big Newton is now he could run when he gets out in the open field but he has a tremendous throwing arm and he's got touched and he's got accuracy you know this this is a big time throw look how tight that spiral is it is in perfect position to a player going right down the middle to feel that that's a throw that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady would have been proud to throw on second and six fits inside the 10 close to the 8 yard line before Mohammed Wilkerson makes the stop there's Ken Dorsey the quarterbacks coach shoe that's who Cam Newton hears in his ear and cam gives him all sorts of credit working with him of course Mike Shula the offensive coordinator now was cams coach for two years so one of the things that cam has gotten to enjoy is continuity here in his first three years hey buddy first involve for tonight left side and not need to get back to the line of scrimmage well one thing the Jets can do and you talked about it earlier Gregg they can defend the run these are the two toughest teams in the NFL to try to run the pigskin down the field and it's because of the quality of their front seven these are two in the best front sevens in football miss jet defense comes in giving up less than 83 yards again rushing the Panthers give up less than 80 a game well the difference is the Panthers defense hasn't been put in many of the compromising positions in judgment on a second and goal intended receiver Williams coming out of the backfield he he had the screen setup and cam just tries to flip it he tries to just flip it over the top of the jet defender ain't D Milner came in on a blitz oh that is good they settle the three here for 39 to play in the first it's a three and up in Carolina lead back in Charlotte three nothing Carolina and Kyle Wilson awaits the kick upcoming from the Panthers as we come up on four and a half minutes to play here in the first quarter but with all the attention given the rich Ryan and his job status he sure isn't upbeat gun time he doesn't know any other way I think it's refreshing this without the end zone so the Jets will start from their own 20-yard line as we check out the updated NFC playoff situation Philadelphia a winner or loser Chicago a winner in San Francisco won but they need an Arizona lost in order to clinch a playoff spot meanwhile Carolina with a win here over the Jets today can shut the 49ers into that first wild card slot forced down from the 20 and be changed that little incomplete Gregg party was on the jet quarterback barely got rid of it well the Panthers bring such pressure off the edge here's Hardy down here at the bottom Charles Johnson's on the other side but these two guys could be dominant then you can see he got around the brick Assaf Ferguson Ferguson did a pretty good job of holding him out Geno was on the move I thought his knee might have been down before he got really long it was really close second town for about five to the 25 Mike Mitchell coming up from his safety position to make the tackle now that's one of the things Jets have to be aware of is it just innate pass rushing skills of this front unit of the Panthers just you know you it's not unusual for a team to have one really good edge rusher but to have two and that's what they have in Johnson NRT third and five [Applause] to the 40 ones if David Nelson for a first down David Nelson looks like he's a little shaken up as he hits over to the Jets sideline you can take a look at the working against straight in Florence number 29 and Florence you know he's looking at Nelson the whole way and just really slow to break on the football good crisp throw by Gino good shark Grove the practice squad and on about across the 45 yard line blazing speed and blazing speed this is a guy who's run up 40 before in that 4 2 range is not has no NFL experience I don't think he's got great hands but the brick right smart that's one way to get the ball in his hands get him out the open field the one thing you know for sure nobody's gonna catch him from behind David Olson back on the field second and three this is chris ivory the ivory cross midfield to the 47 and that's a first down well here's Luke Kuechly he's coming over he sees at Santonio is getting into it with captain Marlon number 41 and Kuechly being the the kind of guy he is he's going to come over and try to let Santonio Holmes know I'm watching I see what's going on but he's a really nice guy to talk people II pay what he is it's the best a middle linebacker in the game of football in his second year pushed out for the Jets inside the 40-yard lines of Nelson once again and this is a good illustration of what the Jets coaching staff likes about Geno Smith when he gives an opportunity he can drive the football you know then this is not bad coverage here by Drayton Florence he's there fairly quickly but he thrives it that ball is leaving a paper trail on his way in another first down was went to the 36 yard line in the Panthers [Music] keep leave making the stop on that one you know David Nelson giving this receiving for much-needed lifts and Stephen Hill went on I are well it's a it's a receiving core that doesn't have a lot of playmakers the good news for the Jets is that they got Jeremy Kerley back after he missed three games with a dislocated elbow he is he is a security blanket for Gino's no second date at the bottom of your screen is Greg Hardy and he just gets inside the rookie left guard Brian winners that's just winners has had a real up-and-down year but he has got to stand his ground at the left guard position you can't give the inside to a guy like Hardy who gets right into the grille of your quarterback not good now third and 14 well short of a first down that paths completed to fill out Powell and on to the field will be the field goal unit and this will be a long field goal 50 plus 50 for baby before it is let's see if they get it off before the end of the fourth first quarter that was critical drag that they got that kickoff before the end of the quarter because they had the wind at their back that is a season-long 54 yard field goal for Nick Pope and we come to the end of the first quarter with a 3-3 time back in the Charlotte right after this you got a fella on CBS we get set for the start of the second quarter there aren't very many teams that score a lot of points on the Carolina Panthers in the first quarter coming into the game they had allowed just 21 in the first quarter the fewest in the NFL now nobody scores many points against the materia as they lead the leak of an appoint 14 and a half points a game that is that is really low this is short covers it in junior looks like he may have recovered a little more exciting than it needed to be so it is Carolina's ball but deep in their be taking these Jets as seriously as maybe they should I think it's apparent by now they got a ball game under Smith out there and this if Cam Newton is the sparkplug of this Panther offense Smith is well Steve Smith in many ways the leader of this team look at he the way he's goes back it just stabs that ball with his right hand and then redirects it back towards him if milliner would have been a of this drive that's the very good news for the Jets Wilkerson Harrison and Sheldon Richardson that trio up front they are three stout athletic guys a lot of teams are jealous off front well then you put coke holes and paste on the outside of a mute got side even now anything at a third and fourth 25 2028 yard line we were talking with Antonio Cromartie Steve Smith is talking all the time and we asked Antonio do you talk back and he says I don't ever talk no he doesn't he says that he could talk all game I don't care but I'm not I just never respond at that time Steve Smith may the Antonio Smith has three receptions of 20-plus yards Greg Olson now has 11 of those now that is who would suspect that the tight end would be the go-to guy on the big plays a big passing plays the chump plays instead of Steve Smith first down fights his way cost 25 yard line when we watch both of these teams attempt to him or the football up in there they both know it's going to be tough sledding but you've got to do it you've just got to do it you're gonna make your passing game viable I don't think you have expectations of running the football for 150 yards today but you've got to make the attempt even if it's even if it's only 2 or 3 yards at a time to have to play here in the first half well he's only got one blocker out in front of him travel Wharton his left guard number 70 here he comes and watched this block he just crushes Antonio Davis Damario Davis excuse me and a kid Wharton what a block on Davis and he just puts him on his back and the Jets were overloaded to the other side excellent call coming back five minutes 15 seconds on County a lil about the 6-2 Steve Smith uh-huh good against loose and life Smith to say that ball was a little hot this is this was not a outstanding red zone team you can see they ranked fourth but 25 touchdowns and 40 trips this being their 41st trip into the red zone now at 62 and a half percent those are numbers that are the envy of most teams in the NFL third and three [Applause] whistle jets are going to make this Saima charge timeout so the Jets take a timeout we'll take a break with 8:20 to play and the hamster is knocking on the door watch Antonio Cromartie number 31 he realizes nobody has come over to get on top of Ted Ginn who was in the slot Cromartie was going outside for Steve Smith he realized that nobody was in the slot good smart play by chrome art although rich Ryan is upset that appears to have been a good call first and goal and that's where sometimes there's just no substitute for being big and strong you have no fear you see it off the corner blitz it's one layer deep in the middle and Cam Newton looking gets in behind warden and then each has knocks warden out of his way now that's when you're a big strong quarterback when you can't turn your 310 pound guard into a projectile and send him forward first and goal [Applause] we're in the backfield stop Olsen drifted into the end zone that was covered up well covered the Panthers have run this play before and it's taking advantage of Cam Newton's tremendous height and the ability to make that fake and then see over what's going on up front but the Jets were all over that yeah privately to seven and a half mil get the free so the jet defense stands tall see if Mohammed Wilkinson had a say in this just take a take a look at that Jordan gross Wharton the left guard there's it there is nothing in there again he runs right into the back of Ben Hartsock back up tight end and credit the guys in white they stood their ground they won that battle in the transferred ago Brooke no soon [Applause] now let's see what Ron Rivera does here he's been known to go for things on fourth down but it looks like he's sending the field going in an arc and as much as he hates to do this I think he might be sensing that you know given that he's playing the Jets and not a team like Carolina that's real explosive offensively but this is frustrating this is exactly what they did last week against New Orleans and a losing effort their first two scores were three-pointers 20 yards out so Carolina to trip to the red zone settled for June field goals 646 to play in the first half six three pamphlet we have six 46 to play here in the second quarter and the Jets are about to get their hands on the football for the first time in this quarter 15 plays into that take his time Nelson now with three catches for 44 yards off the left side - sorry by Mike Mitchell why is that a good look and play and talk about being well blocked on the left hand side D'Brickashaw Ferguson gets a huge block taking Greg Hardy all the way down to the inside and that misdirection right there gets Kuechly caught up in traffic that was really a nifty little piece of ball handling and beautiful 135 yard pickup and here's Garoppolo and pollens and to the nine it'll be first and goal Mike Mitchell made the tackle there and all of a sudden this number-one-ranked rush defense is getting gay just old-fashioned power football that time left guard Bryan winters gets a good trap block Mangold willie cologne good job on the inside and all of a sudden right now you know these guys are Carolina's oh wait they're not used to this on first and goal ivory in the backfield okay the yard or so Clinton Michael coming up from his safety position to help it to stop and we check down and that is number 77 Austin how're the right tackle Austin Howard was able to walk off the field by himself being looked at Vladimir Ducasse number 62 as replaced him at right tackle as the Jets now from their own 10-yard line on second and goal the Panthers have only 16 touchdowns this season that's the terrific in the red side Smith well the Sun field Santonio Holmes covered by Drayton florence of Santonio Holmes is beeping to the to the side judge and he didn't get the call here and there's you know there's no doubt that florence has got his hands on it and and Holmes he's really trying to sell it I'll give him credit for that he's throwing himself backwards ain't going to look like Florence whoosh ting come away from this with a touchdown rather than flips it out to this side that is incomplete intended football the backfield a good blitz Peter is a screen but that time Gino was never able to set his feet because of that blitz and he wasn't able to direct them a very good throw and you knew there'd be bad blood this week when Santonio Holmes made that comment about the Panthers secondary being the weak link he he's the least surprised person in this stadium that they'll be drawing on him the entire game but he'd better he'd better produce today fourth and goal 28 yard field goal attempt by Nicole delay of game will back them up five yards Rex Ryan is not happy about pre-snap penalties against his team but in this situation that's no big deal it's really not a big deal back him up five yards with this is still up what should be in ship shock field that's the 48th pre-snap penalty Jeff they lead the in that category it's good and so just under 350 to play we're tied at 6 Gino Smith was looking for more than that back to Carolina at the moment he gets a d milliner and milliner doesn't get off that block milliner has got to fight his way to the sideline to keep that from happening 70 yards great job of selling the screen to the left by Camp Nou before he comes back to the right the extra point is good not much time off the clock at all on that drive was there here's the Angela Williams who's going to come out after the faith but I want you to look at and read Cam Newton sells his screen to this direction look how much he moves and read and then head read whose centerfield takes a bad angle and right there comes in behind DeAngelo Williams instead of taking an angle to cut him off and force him back to the middle but Cam Newton talked about moving the free safety he moved and read a good 5 yards was selling that screen to the going to get a hit start on the team and head into the locker room right there it looks like maybe his right foot angle but there's no question Cam Newton's in pain so he gets a head start for the locker room and Cam Newton is a pretty stoic guy that is unusual for him to be that expressive in showing some pain he's big tough guy you know a paper cut under the nail well we could catch a million shots of you making that face and that would be news work pal Wilson so Gino Smith and company will start from the 20-yard line and you really don't expect much more than Jets running out the clock here and going to the locker room trailing by 10 well the Jets not a turnover Panthers don't either a Geno Smith does have a huge arm if they just wanted to launch one down the field but they're not this coming on the heels of his best first half of his career 224 yards passed and he was on his way to a big play and he got dragged down from behind by Sheldon Richardson and he's been evaluated by the medical staff at halftime we have not yet received a word from the Panthers but there he is warming up that's a live shot of Campbell over flat line looking like a guy getting ready to come in on the Panthers he gets ripped by captain muttering well that is at least the third time and there may have been four where captain Marlin has come on a corner blitz off the edge and that time comes from the backside Gino senses it fortunately about a half a second before he gets there so he's not completely surprised by but even then you saw the ball come temporarily just a little bit loose fourth to stay in bounds and move the sticks and the Jets right here are up again so already flew scores behind seven straight completions thrown by a winner but this is the answer to the outside and out of bounds at the 14 D milliner ran him out and Mike Shula mixing up the play calling very well right now well he lost one of his weapons to Jonathan Stewart who's got an MCL injury in he's one of the out four and in determined an undetermined amount of time but DeAngelo Williams in his eighth year still still getting it done so first time tonight a Carolina Drive goes at least 50 yards Kenyon Bonner in the backfield now with towles escape and throws it away so it'll be third and to look at statistics yard drug they look at the balance there by Carolina five Russians four passes that time Cam Newton when he came out he was surprised to have Mohammed Wilkerson right in his face and that was some little some little move he put on Wilkerson to freeze him and buy some time to get to the quarterbacks it's your running around for your life back there it's pretty it's impossible to see all of your guys on all parts of the field I think that's a quarterback you got to get over it happens of coverage yes illegal though it may be pass interference defense number 23 automatic first down since these homes makes his inside moves and right there white nose he's finished if he doesn't grab Richardson's a hero back here in Carolina nine play drive 86 yards in 446 and Sheldon Richardson scoring a touchdown the Jets down three 22 yard line three minutes to play in the third quarter on fourth down Ron Rivera and the Panthers went for it didn't make it the Jets came right back with the pick guy for the touchdown a rare touchdown scored on Ron Rivera's defense and that explains why he's comfortable going for her on fourth and 2 he you don't figure the Jets are gonna go 86 yards inspark touchdown that's awesome quick glance at the NFC playoff picture Seattle is in New Orleans losing big Philadelphia a loser today Chicago a winner Carolina with a win here would leapfrog San Francisco the Dallas Cowboys all winning as we speak the surprise in that little bundle was the fact that New Orleans is getting pummeled by the attention he has for going for it on 4th now and he was he was very honest about he's any deep to take the temperature of his team but he also has a pretty talented offense led by a pretty talented quarterback that he believes it when he went back to the last couple of years and and looked at situation he every single one of them where he decided to eschew going for it and kick a field goal and he he said you know what I realized that I made poor decisions on Sardo and mr. Dale's gonna pay err on the side of being aggressive this is medium right side time to learn that breaking tackles that'll be a first down for Carolina DeAngelo Williams is running hard take a look at this the old fashioned sweep got a good block by a Center Ryan Khalil and then he runs through a couple tackles and that's that's Demario Davis who's a really good tackler and the Angela Williams runs right through that attempt so Williams with a breather on the sideline now as you look at the total yards put up set today by Carolina total gets the handoff changes direction comes this way to the 40 well they call that leaving through the back door although we've got a flag thrown and it's coming back offense number 67 10-yard penalty first down it's Khalil the center the Pro Bowl Center and again he looks up at the video board to try to figure out what he did because he doesn't know what you lineman is to do the honest to goodness what did I do well of course so at what other what stance would you like him to take there right it's not like he just has to do a victory lap walking around saying I'm sorry I'm sorry I yelled the guy I think you guys look up at the scoreboard and go which one did I get close for hey sometimes they called you that it was the other guy at home first in 20 deep drop for duty running out of time down there run for there's a penalty he cuts it back it is not that about sort of midfield and you feel like this is coming back offense number 70 10-yard penalty that's workin kiltie of the whole man and when the Panthers really need a calming Drive that you put to to let their defense gather themselves after getting gassed a little bit by the Jets to have you know consecutive holding calls there there's work number 70 you can see that he's got the arms all around loose a dutiful and then you get the feeling with the time running down here in the third quarter that we may be seeing a little momentum shift down on the field well certainly that's what Rex's team did when they scored a touchdown and now facing a first and 30 now if you want to see momentum shift if the team gets out of the first 2:30 it needs to change that's demoralize and almost through the pic at the 40-yard line it Reed made the dive for it in the second and third and you know there have been there have been various times in this game where Cam Newton has been forced to hold the ball for a long time and you see his arm got grazed right there Harrison put a hand on it on his forearm while he was throwing but Newton has struggled at times to find open receivers now he's struggling because his receivers aren't open so give the Jets a lot of credit there but he's he's been standing in that pocket for long periods of time sometimes taking the sack loans at times they gonna hit with a living down got the snap off give mr. Taylor extreme fired up fired up hopefuls and David Harris combined as the clock will run down here in the third quarter what is the fourth quarter hole we played three air in Charlotte the third
