2011 Bristol Speed Trials Part 1 of 2

get it wrong here don't buy the prize places fast it's not about one peanut guys reasons your eyes don't deceive you today we're going to bend time and go for record speeds at Bristol Motor Speedway hang on everyone the Bristol speed trials are next welcome everyone to the world's fastest half-mile we know how the NASCAR cars get around this place but what about cars of a different kind it's time for the 2011 Bristol speed trials at the world's fastest 1/2 mile I'm John Roberts alongside of Larry McReynolds and Larry we're gonna see some speed today yes we are we're gonna do it on two wheels four wheels we'll do it with a wing we'll try with a street legal car and the driver of that street legal car is David Ragan he's with Bob Dylan er all sorts of race cars here at Bristol during this speed trial David Ragan you're behind the wheel of a street car what's the game plan Ford Mustang go fast now this Mustang it's a little bit more than a street car it's it's got a lot of horsepower 5.0 supercharger in it so no nothing crazy I don't have my six point harness so just a normal seat belt go have some fun make a few labs and and we'll have the record alright david ragan keep an eye out for now for him he's going for broke in the Mustang Bob thanks the warm-up laps are continuing here Larry Mac we have a bunch of different drivers from different disciplines but the goal is the same go fast around the world's fastest half mile yeah we've got six different drivers five different cars what you're trying to do is break a record that's been standing for 11 years set by Sammy Swindell back in June of 2000 over a hundred and thirty-eight miles per hour back then and that is flat-out flying around this little racetrack but right now we're going to take a look at some of the guys that are gonna compete today one of them being Bryan Clauson who is in a sprint car that is owned by Tony Stewart if anybody knows how to go fast it's stored but right now Bob Dylan er is standing by with the only entrant into the speed trials it's going to try this thing on two wheels in all my years of racing and coming here to the Bristol Motor Speedway never did I ever think we'd see a two-wheel machine on this high bank half mile oval Scott Russell a lot of people thinking you're just plain nuts I think it goes with a motorcycle crowd and Hanahan you know we are a little bit but you know pretty calculating stuff that we do and today I'll just kind of run around at a pace that I feel comfortable with I mean I won't get a second chance if it goes wrong so keeping it on track and just kind of you know having fun with us while I'm here today you're a five-time Daytona Bike champion is this the craziest thing you've ever done this is definitely out there on the list you know and I've I've been out of it for a while so that's maybe the crazy thing I'll tell you a star nice guy as well this is going to be fun to watch no question about that Bob crazy is the key word here today as Tony Stewart comes out on the grid and he's going to be keeping a close eye on his driver Bryan Clauson who is the first driver out and Larry Mac he is fast right away yeah this is a USAC sprint car and I think to break that record you're going to have to run around this racetrack this half-mile track wide open the question is will your car let you run around your motto and Ryan Clausen won the prestigious turkey night Grand Prix back in 2009 that USAC racing and the record is going down already in the first lap yeah this record as I mentioned it has stood for 11 years set back in June of 2000 by Sammy Swindell looks like the me he's going to be even quicker on this lap junior and you got to be fast if you're driving for Tony Stewart because he has won a championship and everything he has ever driven and also Bryan Clauson has the pressure of racing for Tony but also for himself and trying to smash this record as he's faster even up even faster on the second lap and Tony loves getting his hands on these things word is this morning he and one Pablo Montoya we're working on a skid plate or a belly fan for ground effects on that car so Tony Stewart likes what he sees so far but he knows his driver can do a little bit better this is a one-hour session and we are very early in the session so far as Bryan Clauson will be making many more runs as they try to work on that car and get a little bit faster great left it's definitely going to get faster it's going to take a lot faster than that to break this record coming up next these super mods will take their try at breaking the record here at Bristol but also we'll see a two-wheeled attempt as well the speed trials continue welcome back everyone of the Bristol speed trials as we are watching records fall in front of our eyes and Larry McReynolds here is Brad Knopf singer who started his racing career at age 16 driving his family's car tracks around California and he's just get little warm-up going on yeah Brad has been a Sprint Cup Series driver he's also been a crew chief and a spotter in the top NASCAR series what this is is an is ma super modified car boy look a lot different than what we were used to seeing here at Bristol and also a lot faster as he's just getting warmed up right now but already very fast yeah you got to believe when you're trying to run around this half-mile track this fast that you at least want to feel it out for a lap or two as I mentioned earlier Junior I think to do it and he shuts it off pretty quick there you're going to have to have this car to go around near wide open mike lick tea is coming up next he is another is ma super modified driver but one guy we're keeping an eye on today has been fast so far and that's Jason blonde here's one bad to the bone looking race car sprint car on my high banks of Bristol here Jason blonde yesterday in warm-ups you were the fastest car a 13 point - second lap can you even do better today I think we can maybe get a 13-2 or we'll see there's quite a bit of more rubber down - but yesterday we're already glued to the track and can you actually feel from the cockpit how fast you're going oh it's just amazing it just feels like a Daytona Indianapolis 500 the car feels like an Indy by Super Bowl today he's going for the world record and Bob we're already seeing the world record fall on just about every run so far these guys are fast Larry and Mike Lichty now has the record we're seeing the Sun fall starting to see shade and turn two and turn three the cooler gets the quicker it's going to be here's Bob Dylan ER with owner Tony Stewart who isn't going to give up until this thing's over you got to love open wheel machines especially of the ushak kind Bryan Clauson pretty darn quick in that car right there his team owner is Tony Stewart and I want to know what do you think about this speed trial here at Bristol I told Brian I think he's crazy for doing this but he's doing a good job I mean it's this place is fast it's intimidating and especially when you're going out and it's not about going to beating other guys you're racing the stopwatch today so it's it's as fast as he he can go so for a non winged car I think he's doing a great job I mean we're running comparable times to what the winged cars are doing that's a this is with a lot less downforce so he's definitely up on the wheel now Lichty with the wings super modified there is fastest so far but I just talked to your boy there and he said he might be able to go a little bit faster what do you think yeah that's why I've been standing way behind the car here and I don't want to listen to anything he's saying because it's it had me nervous watching him practice last night so if whatever he can do he can do but it's a like I told him there's no points and my order today but it's pretty cool I mean it you know it shows it shows a talent that he's got to get in here and come to a track that you know these cars I've never run and do what they're doing it's pretty impressive you saying that Bryan Clauson has more cojones than Tony Stewart today yes absolutely I got no problem saying that so you get remember I'm older I've crashed a lot harder a lot more often and I know what it feels like so he's in he's around me he runs these cars every week so I don't think I'm the right guy to do this there was way more sir Tony Stewart it's got the car on her hat on today Bob here comes our favorite is Jason blonde an 18-year veteran of sprint car racing he's driving extreme sprint series sprint car Larry but I think what Tony Stewart said pretty much makes the statement it's not about points it's not about money it's about saying I'm the fastest man on a half-mile racetrack and these guys don't care what the prize is but they come here to win as Jason blond is letting it all hang out in his winged sprint car 120 1.81 and as you heard Bob Filner's say this was the fastest guy the fastest car in practice last night just cool to look at this Larry isn't oh no I hit the wall there to start finished and Ian still ran a 13 62 what kind of damage do you think that did to the car Larry he actually hit it with that right rear awfully hard there there's a lot of things that are lightweight back there I've got to believe he bent something oh that is disappointing for Jason blonde as we take another look at what happens gets a little loose into the outside wall let's go down to Bob Dylan er who is standing by with Jason blonde to see what the effects are going to be on his attempt at setting a new world record taking a look at the right rear of the Sprint car of Jason blonde you could see the chassis right here the panhard bar mount this bar right here that holds that mount bent in from where he hit the wall so Jason Bohn I know you got to be disappointed with that does that ruin your day here pretty much we just talked to Jerry Kelly here he works on the number two car he said we can get a TIG welder and maybe fix it we only got now around off we can get her done but you know gotta thank dirty engines bio base steel performance American race tires I hate it for all the guys because I think we'd have been down 13 2 s was it jitters it might be a little too exciting to excitement for me very exciting down here on pit road watching these cars on the track and not too much excitement right there as those guys will go to work we have some two-wheeled action coming up very soon now as mr. Daytona himself Scott Russell will attempt a two-wheel record
