First Le Mans I ever watched thanks to it being on free to air TV here in Australia. That’s back when One HD was a sports channel. Unfortunately that was short lived and I now pay to watch it.

[Music] long straights and smooth roads define the track the great teams that have won here Mercedes Jaguar for Ferrari Porsche define the history and exhaustion elation hope and fear define the experience [Music] this race was first held in 1923 the idea was to have an event which would enable many Jerzy to demonstrate the toughness of their cars now it's all about speed the race has changed from proving ground to battle today howdy and Pujo renew a year ago when the French team finally broke Germans Street of five straight wins for both teams in fact for all the teams this is the race that determines how they'll measure their a single day all or nothing yet knowing all the while that the ultimate effort incurs the ultimate risk there are two classes four prototypes and two for GT cars mix of fast and faster a glittering array of machines taking the storm then pushing hard to the long summer Twilight and into the gathering dusk I rush into the night right beams of light reaching far ahead 200 miles an hour forehead is where you are about to be the stretch from dawn to finish is excruciating tiredness clawing at you we've come so far can we finish many cars are out because of things beyond two teams control another drivers mistake the failure of a tiny part faint stalks the few who are left finally there's the finish and a great wave of people washing down rejuvinated all that lies ahead as the 78s running of the 24 hours of them all max as you've just seen this amazing event has something for everyone it pushes and pulls in ways beyond belief it is the ultimate test of endurance and speed of course it is Lamar and speed is delighted to bring you live and exclusive coverage of the 78th running of the world's most renowned sports car race so pleased you could be with us folks lead iffy here along with Calvin fish Bryant ill Dorsey Schrader Andrew Mary and Chris Neville Jamie how and we have two L'Amour winners on our team this year Justin Bell and glad to welcome Scott Pruett on board as well well we've got all the story lines here the eight-time winner Tom Tom Kristensen is back Nigel Mansell and his two sons are here a third-generation Andretti is on the grid second-generation drivers from the frost and Brabham family and almost 20 drivers with Formula One experience there are so many story lines here and yes that familiar one of Peugeot vs. Audi Cal this is going to be an amazing 24 hours it will be leave this is a pressure cooker right now this is game time think about the budgets involved Peugeot and audi reportedly spent a hundred and fifty million dollars plus per season for their sports car and but right now the pressure in that is in the hands of these drivers and the mechanics and crews not to make mistake here to do today Scott a break Travie onboard what's it like being at Lamar for the first time evening it's incredible the Daytona 500 8500 the only way you put that in perspective for the viewers that are out there from from the the pageantry the history the excitement is all incredible it is wrapped up right here 300 thousand people it's going to be incredible 24 hours dorsi I'll tell you what guys it's not just the drivers it's the cars and the teams from all over the world doing battle for the next 24 hours let's talk about the cars there are four classes two for Prototype two for GT and almost for the first time in multiple decades we almost had the largest field with 56 however we lost one gt2 car the car that defending gt2 champion Mika Salo is in that Ferrari for a of course a heavily damaged so the now traditional 55 cars will start let's show you some practice and qualifying highlights because for the first time the guys got extra practice time with a four hour session straight up on Wednesday afternoon that gave them a little extra time to get used to the tracking conditions but let's talk more to the point about qualifying / Javy outtie this was thrilling however the liens prevailed they certainly did the Audi's chased arc but ultimately as this man Sebastien Bourdais who captured the pole for the last three years as one of the other pirjo drivers Stephane Sarrazin who was the chosen one this year all three / Jose went for it and they came out on top one two three that was qualifying what will the race pace be here today and it couldn't be a better story Sebastien Bourdais hails from LA more he's a hometown hero and he starts from our position in that number three Persia and you could say that the two non expected cars for POJO an Audi were the fastest with number three for Persia number nine for Audi that gives you a snapshot but let's get to the man at the moment when Sebastien Bourdais with that electrifying time he's standing by with Cristobal howdy versus Pujo we've waited an entire year to see the next chapter of this epic battle and it is finally here Sebastien Bourdais in his third year with Pujo and probably your best chances for win last year this team looks so relaxed so confident they got the win again the team very confident in the 908 looks faster than ever how is this race gonna play out I think it's gonna be one of the toughest race ever I think the quality of the seven walks cars are unbelievable and we don't expect an easy race by any means but we we did everything we had to we feel very well prepared so we don't know what they will show but there's no regret on the outside we did everything we could you finished second twice for Pujo is this finally the year for you tell you on Sunday well after qualifying outies press release red Audi banks on efficiency Justin does that mean they don't have the pace of the Pujo well I'm not gonna I'm not gonna watch the man that just got out of the car Alan's just finished his reconnaissance lap and yeah certainly Audi have looked a little bit shaky this week but their confidence is up and I'm standing here on the starting grid I tell you what the atmosphere is magnificent a little bit of Audi bonding here Alan your final preparation before the race obviously you've still got the same excitement as you did when you won here 1012 years ago I've got the same excitement is when I first started my Formula Ford career with you Justin you know this place brings you back when you see all the flags when you see the grandstands and the people the atmosphere there's absolutely no question L'Amour is still the number one and of course a nice do you remember two years ago I remind you it was ten years between wins and you look to me with that little look you got but nice consolation is that only six times in history is the pole-sitter won this race so I think we can still be in luck mate but obviously you've got a real strategy to play here because you don't have the ultimate pace no we don't we've got to be clean and tidy we've got to attack but we've also to make sure that we keep this car in one piece all the way to the end teams got to do some good pitch stuff and we've got to drive fast so this seems similar to 2008 to me well we certainly know that the Audi team can pull it together meet we are with you all the way brilliant back to you guys yeah it's gonna be thrilling isn't it and then you heard from Alan there they do not have the outright pace but they certainly know how to win this event we have American drivers on hand at Lamar this year some are rookies some are well experienced and we start right at the top with Marco Andretti his father his grandfather have started at this classic now it is young Marco's turned a lot of American drivers represented in the gt2 class and in total there are 12 from the US flying the flag let's talk more about Marco Andretti with Jaime is making its 24 hours of the mod debut the third generation of in 22 December mark oh you're right in the middle of your open-wheel season what is it about this event that made you just have to come out and play well I mean first off I'm so fortunate to be able to compete you know in two huge events you know 8,500 and obviously the mom I mean two awesome events I mean the crowds are what what makes these these events so I think you know right now just just happy you know able to be competing in this stuff so you know right now just hopefully we could have a long steady race will see more surprising when Nigel Mansell and he's with Andrea great to be back at the mark fantastic to be with while the motor Racing's all-time heroes Nigel Mansell well he's had a night always placed game somebody tends to pull the microphone cable he's done it for years Nigel absolutely fantastic you're making history here racing with your two sons or what are your emotions right now well a bit like yours we need to settle down a little bit but it's fantastic isn't it I mean we're here we're on the starting grid and only a few minutes ago I don't know weather weather conditions are playing into our hand but you know it's amazing to be part of them on 24 hours 78 year history and I'm making history on the 78th LeMond race is just incredible and anything has this compare with Monaco with Indianapolis you've won the great races how does this track compared to the whole atmosphere way it's incredible I mean first thing I got to say to the boys in our team we haven't had an hour off yet they've rebuilt the car all through the night we didn't you know hit anything yesterday but we had a major problem with the engine installation and the a-frame which was broken and so we've got a big challenge this morning trying to set the car up but everyone's worked so hard and I think that's the difference to a normal race because no one gets any sleep you just working flat out all the time and it's a longest race isn't it one of them in the history of motorsport so it's incredible nigel mansell making history here LeMond and it is a quite fit nigel mansell who has lost some 20 pounds in the last three months with thanks to his two sons pushing him hard on the fitness side and the driving side there's a battle within a battle within lmp1 this is one of the front running petrol powered cars as opposed to the diesel powered cars up front by Audi and Peugeot the Aston Martin was the highest fishing petrol powered car last year with a fourth overall we'll see how good the Aston Martin boys can go let's switch gears let's talk the second prototype class p2 and more famous racing names here at Lamar let's start with Brabham and America's high crop racing team in lmp2 they are on the view at Lamar but the lmp2 competitors are putting this car this team Cal on top as far as the benchmark they certainly are the HPD look very fast they're three engines the first three spots on the grid and this team strike a racing claimed the pole in the hands of Danny Watts he laid down a cracker of a lap 333 for lmp2 is just sensational stuff but the race is a different matter let's take a look it's a little bit like the football World Cup isn't it England versus the US in lmp2 two British teams in striker and our ml one and three up against America's Pycroft racing it's pretty much that's how it will play out now earlier Chris Neville caught up with David Brabham the defending race winner David Brabham has claimed victory the last three years twice in gt1 last year overall David a new challenge this year trying to get a victory in lmp2 that would be four consecutive victories what would that mean for you well Chris you know this place is really special we were talking about it earlier and it's been so good to me and we're not far from the podium where the last three years I've stood up there and it's an amazing experience something that you can't even describe in words so to win four in a row would just be a massive thing for me yeah there'll be unbelievable good luck today David thank you and we rewind the clock twelve months to June 2009 and those magical moments it was in the same year the 50th anniversary of David's father Sir Jack Brabham where he clinched his first Formula One world Drivers title and David got to do what he's older brother Jeff did and that was win for Peugeot at L'Amour a truly momentous occasion for the Brabham family and for David personally we'll see if he can get that fourth one in a row this year Jean taught Jean a lacy wishing him well and this is a big moment for Jean a lacy paired with Formula one test and reserve driver Giancarlo Fisichella in the AF Corse Ferrari we're going to talk more about Ferrari more about GT 2 the reason why our boys from Corvette Racing are there it's a big year celebrating 50 years since their first run and win at LeMond will tell you more in a moment speeds coverage of the 24 hours of lomarr to you by BMW the ultimate driving machine the countdown to the start continues we are getting ever so close until we see the famous trick allure fly to signify the start of the 78s running of l'amour this year Bruno Maia the CEO of Rolex and jean-claude key the administrator former skiing champion former 24-hour driver will wave the trick allure to signify the start we're switching from prototype to GT cars and this is the final time we'll see the gt1 class at Lamar part of the new 2011 regulations sees a no more GT one we will talk more about that through the class and we congratulate Thomas anger again yet another class pole position this time in the only Aston Martin in GT one for the young driver AMR squad now there are a couple of Corvettes there for Lou Cal fun but where are our Corvettes the familiar yellow and black machines will they've chain classes have a made therein gt2 and in qualifying and practice boy they're worth in some things to talk about here Olly Gavin yan Magnussen sits a pretty good pace so to the BMS Scuderia Porsche BMW there as well there's an overlying and an underlying story here and big headlines Cal involving the defending champions absolutely there we see Rob Bell taking their Aston Martin for a spin of the art cars back great to see those colors of the Ricci Ferrari they were the fastest but they expect it after the qualifying session take a look at the graphic and you'll notice a special note there that red arrow yes the 82 fails scrutineering post-qualifying scrutineering in the tech inspection Chris Neville will tell us more about that in a moment that elevates the two Corvettes to the front row there are Corvettes there are Porsches there are Ferraris there are BMWs this is going to be quite the battle in gt2 let's check in first with Corvette and Justin Bell on the grid is obviously where the Ricci Ferrari should have been but for that little infringement on the rear wing which put them to the back of the grid of course a nice inheritance here for the 60 Volk of it Oliver Gavin just getting in are you ready ollie ready so you got a message for the American fans yeah Corbett's gonna win do you know and if history is anything to do with it if this lanky little Englishman can do it anyone can let's move on down here obviously all of us got this incredible success in American LeMans arisen for Corvette but over here standing Johnny O'Connell four times winner of the LeMond 24 hour it's almost a 50% winning record Johnny that's the way I put it you must be very excited you know what you are this there's nothing as special as this place when you're a race car driver and you know and to be here with two great Corvettes and representing Chevrolet man it's a huge honor and we just want to you know it'd be be great to get another win for all my friends back in Flowery Branch I know you have a huge following but tell us as you're here on the grid you know that the racy Ferrari is starting from the rear they have been a significant competitor a week I mean at what point you expect you might start to see them well you know hopefully we don't you know those guys are all are so strong you know they've won here a couple times and in the states they always push us hard so I'm thinking that you know hopefully we don't run into them but you know they anything can happen in this race and and I'm sure they're banking on that and I'm sure everything will Johnny good luck today America is watching ok look over here guys this is I don't know if I'm actually gonna be able to have a quick chat but inside here is John a lazy Formula one Ferraris star who obviously is pretty composed right now gingka vista calories driving with him this is a really great moment to see Ferrari getting behind the the Ferrari teams here in GT and obviously a great contributor to world motorsport and he's here and support the fans have been nuts about this I'm gonna have to leave you in a minute because everybody is in the cars and it is like five minutes away from the start but remember this this is the start line for the LeMond 24 hours there are 300,000 people up there there's about 70,000 English people 50,000 Danes which means if you want to invade Denmark this is the weekend to do all of you guys let's get this race start it's understandable too because Justin has won here in class and his enthusiasm is infectious the BMW it's got such a history at this event artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol have put their art on the BMW's and again we have a BMW art car in this field jeff koons is the artist he said it has been an absolute honor to be involved let's hear more from Jamie BMW Motorsports makes their return to the 24 hours in law after 11 years of being away at the 79 car bearing the art car graphics this weekend dart burner you have the honor of driving that car but it's also your first time at Lamar what's going through your mind as we go green well I'm just amazed you know being in LeMond and top of that driving the odd car is great experience for me and jeff koons came yesterday we'll be here for the whole race and he is success oriented so I think in his spirit we will try to bring it home on the podium good luck with that today thank you it's the 17th time there's been a BMW art car at Lamar we're going to stay with GT too because that big story line is the two-time defending champions recent competency only being sent to the back of the grid Chris tell us more of the specifics about exactly why they were sent back well Lee and gt2 the rules stipulate that the rear wing must have a gurney on attached to the back that is 15 millimeters high a minimum of 15 millimeter when the car went through tech it was a little too short since it was too short the car has to go to the back of the grid Giuseppe Ricci has steered his car to two victories the past two years Giuseppe you've got those two victories but you've never had to do it from the back of the pack is that going to change your strategy no if any we're just going to have to change our strategy in that we will let the front runners set the pace and then a way to attack a little later on rather than us at the pace and let them attack us good luck today thank you very much the enormous ly successful Houston based Ferrari car dealer and team owner and he's looking for his third consecutive from the ACO mr. Daniel pisano waving the green signifying for the boys to roll off the grid we do need to tell you that one of the American cars has experienced a problem the flying lizard Porsche with Darren law Jorg Bergmeister Seth Newman had a flat rear tire we don't have any more to update you on at the moment but they did experience some adversity on the initial out lap so let's hope they've been able to get it back get a fresh tire on and they are back out there and ready to roll there is another American team here as well it is Jaguar RSR the rocket sports boys small gentilozzi and his sons and it's a magical year for jag the most successful British market L'Amour celebrating its 75th anniversary of making and racing cars jag Γ€r back atlas off you [Music] long straights and smooth roads define the trial the great teams that have won here Mercedes Jaguar Ford Ferrari Porsche defined the history and exhaustion elations hope and fear define the experience [Music] for so many decades people couldn't mention the 24 hours of Lamar without mentioning six-time winner Jacky Ickx that has now changed now we cannot talk about this event without mentioning the eight-time winner Tom Kristensen he is mr. Lamar and part of Tom's ritual each and every year is speaking with our Calvin fish prior to the race Tom I believe you can hear us go ahead and speak with kau me Tom its Calvin great to see you down there on the grid mate then it looks like you and the boys and work tirelessly to develop a very strong race car however is it fast enough to beat the Lions here today or do you need to rely on the excellent execution as you did back in 2008 we will try very hard there's definitely we know the speed we've done in qualifying we will take that right into the race we've improved the car and we feel very strong for that if the Lions can keep the speed they're having qualifying then we are in serious with the troubles but we go for it and 24 is a long race and I think this one goes out and turns out and will be the fastest ever in history mate Allen is starting the race he stated before this weekend that the first lap would really be a good indicator as to the true potential of this race car in the race today what do you look for in these opening laps with Allen behind the wheel I look out I mean in the beginning we we now we start on a median time we were close to start on the soft Alan will will take the car through the first laps and I will join in and take the steering wheel second and then dude in the third we we feel we have a strong car but we feel everyone has told so much about the favorites from from Persia of this year but we we just want to go go hard every lap expect the unexpected and just be absolutely doing a serum the serum problem job and you stand the other guys in the back of us here I'm sure they will service is very fast fuel and tires like today have a great run Thank You Cal hi everyone enjoy the race there is mr. Lamar Tom Kristensen a great friend of ours great friend of speeds and he is going for his ninth win let's tell you about how you can stay with us here right throughout the race it's either here on speed or speed comm will be with you here on speed up until 12:30 p.m. Eastern then we switch over for coverage on speed comm we need to go away for some other broadcasting and some other coverage we will be back with you at 6:00 p.m. Eastern right through until the finish and beyond all right let's talk more about this eight and a half mile monster with a man who has won here Scott Pruett take it away you came out of the pitch go up to the dental after 175 miles an hour this is a very fast very fluid track down to ten Rouge 155 up the Mosel on straightaway up to 215 miles an hour you a fifth or sixth gear to Panama gears you have any car down to bull on down in the corner 55 miles an hour back up to 215 as you approach Indianapolis I've been to slowest turn on a track Arnage down to about 50 miles an hour straight back up pushing 200 miles an hour as you enter the Porsche curves down to the port to Kade it's fun it's fast it's 24 hours man let's go race it we're talking numbers we're talking figures Brian bring us those important stats well it's everything that everyone's talked about it's the emotion it's the drama you can feel the ghosts of competitors past when you walk into pit lane because it is LeMond and take a look 55 cars 165 drivers 14 hours maximum drive time and we've seen drivers do it in the past if one of the three drivers becomes ill or whatever 3,000 plus miles 30 plus pit stops you want competition this is it speeds well over 200 miles an hour it's going to be exciting Lee Doe let's put your wet ahead on how's that looking it's looking beautiful I'll tell you what and I guess our guys and gals in the pits are going to love this only a 30% chance of rain tonight 10% today tomorrow's beautiful 72 degrees you couldn't ask for better they do not drop anything on the circuit you ride on board with one of the paw shows up throught the lights out on the pace car it will be the 78th time that the green flag will wave here at the circuit lisara and the drama is about to unfold Puzo's one two three and four three of them from the factory one up from from Orica and it is all Diesel's up front warming up tires right now we heard allan mcnish say it's about efficiency but he also said attack he really did in last year we saw Allen doing outstanding opening lap to get amongst those Persians as this year seems like the Audi has the same straightaway speed as the Persia how hot will they push in these opening laps pace car on pit road we are green Atlas our pushes take the lead McNish will he fight back side by side with his young teammate Timo Bernhard McNish takes over the point for the Audi contingent but we chose up front the three factory Persians with my extra three stars followed by the our commercial element nish lots of defend don't worry about that smoke if you were wondering about the smoke at the beginning right there remember these are Diesel's right now they're cold they'll put out a little girl have that white smoke and then they'll be clean and you talk about cold right now the tires on these lmp1 cars they are cold McNish takes a look to the inside of the Orica down into ten throughs you'll now trying to get into the drop terrible appear he's driving that not before Erica the brightly colored Persia fall in line and qualifying the hing speeds about 215 miles an hour on the approach to the first you came this will be the very first time guys that the group of cars this massive group of cars will encounter top speeds in in amongst one another that air disturbance off the car in front they're feeling really right now for the first time McNish looking racy as he ran there behind the kikuchiyo taking a look you ride on board with allan mcnish he's thinking hard about it taking a look at Kidd he's anxious to go cuz he can win this race in the first lap well that's McNish it and we watch him every year he's a terrier and he just lets it go he's now on the outside for braking for the second chicane the second chicane goes the opposite direction to the first see if there's gonna be a little fight the wheel here that's it girl smart move this is exactly what the factory Pirjo team wanted they wanted a berth come forth car in this field just to give the Audi's a little harder time plate maybe a little pushing today look it out and getting a good run right here me uses the draft well they may do here they don't have a push to pass but but they can't written up the fuel mixture and that just gives you more horsepower these diesel-powered machines you see those guys already I mean they are lean on each other look push and shove action there's a move up into boson quarter the efficiency that we see right now is the efficiency the determination McNish we've seen it in years past fighting from the get-go and McNish now looks to the inside of Lapierre the turkey gets a couldn't pull off the back of the pooja really does but not enough to get alongside in the brake zone that was tight there is the little kink now words that very fast right-hander before Indianapolis that has an amazing piece of the racetrack down the couple of gears about 110 kilometers right there then down to the slowest part of the racetrack I know it's 50 miles an hour right here apex right now Allan McNish may actually have a faster race car than Lapierre in front but he cannot get by and one of the things that Alexander works at said this year when then the Audi's have the straight-line speed this year we do not want to race them on the track we want to race them with strategy have you see dr. Ullrich watching McNish still taking the fight to the push out in front and right now Timo Bernhard holding on in the second Audi they see who's the sho'nac who's the faster the man behind the scenes for ARCA he now has the responsibility of entering one of these / Jose for the world's most famous sports car race and obviously on home ground in France for him these diesel-powered cars are so quiet they don't make the engine noise you can actually hear the tires squealing the understeer as they turn into the corner on some of these cars something you just normally don't hear with prototype race cars they're starting to get some heat in the tires down you can see the few shows really starting to stretch out a bit even the flight to the head between between the to show and line and McNish sees their strips strips narrate Lily heated tires now they're looking like they're gonna be able to stretch stretch some legs they came through those final set of corners before chicane that's what you need mechanical grip that's where the aerodynamics are not really nailing the car to the blacktop it seems like the Persians have really strong through there ow he's worked very hard on the aerodynamic package they didn't have the straight-line speed last year to compete with the / Jo's this year they've really got the cars trimmed out how's that gonna work at the conditions get tricky here over the next 24 hours Pedro Lamy out in front in the number three push oh the red mirrors on the number three as you're right on board the number to push Oh right now Frank month a knee behind the wheel larmy with over a second on that first lap over his teammate janae and a problem for the 19 one of our American LeMans Series competitors Spike Lewis starting the race here today for the Otto Kahn team but here we see the purges once again going through that first you came Lapierre has done a tremendous job here remember he had minimal experience in this race car currently running fourth you know what I love about lamothe eyes the speed it's not like American tracks where they try to hold this feedback you really Hall a male when you go to this place it's incredible I mean when you go down to bowls lawn and and then when you head up head down the backstraight Indianapolis it's incredible how fast you're going I mean when you're over 200 miles an hour it's just a great ride one of the things I think her job Willie on keep in check here today and the egos amongst their driving squad remember only two of their driving team mark Sunday and Alex Bert's have wins here all the rest of the boys are really really hungry and one of those guys is bond to me currently in third one of the fastest drivers on their squad we saw the problems for the number 19 of Mike one Ameri American Lamaze series competitors who made the trip up here it's great to see them back but Chris Neville problems in the early going what's going on with the nineteen Brian I just chalked in with Otto Kahn and they said it looks like an apparent gearbox failure they've had problems all week long trying to get out there get some track time get that car up to speed and now more problems on the first lap of this race Mike Lewis stuck out there if he cannot get the car back to pit lane their race has done disappointing I'm early in potentially for the Otto Kahn team they ran so well at Long Beach Tommie greasy behind the wheel running up in the top three and now the long trip all the way to France the time the investment looks like it may not pay off as you see Michael Lewis stranded on the side of the road seven diesel-powered prototypes flashed by for Puzo's three Audi's and we get to the first of the petrol powered cars the Aston Martin of Stefan mukha the double-oh-seven so a quick shot there Olivier canal is the new technical director a pleasure he came on board at the end of the 2008 season with immediate success and there we see his cannon fodder outtie dr. Wolfgang Ullrich but I tell you what the good news for the Audi boys is beginning a last year's race the persons were stretching away at three seconds a lap today it looks a little bit closer and get the lap times on the board Lommy continuing to pull out just a bit over the second-place Pujo but they are lined up in lockstep in the battle that we've seen early on from La Sarthe it will rage for 24 hours throw your remote control away we'll bring it to you all right here on speed or speed comm we'll see you the battle has raged from the very beginning here at La Sarthe the 78th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans strength is in the diesels up front but in order to win this epic event you got to have the keys to the race so let's take a look at the BMW keys to the race door see what are your thoughts well I'll tell you crisis management you can't run this whole race without something going wrong the team that's best prepared to fix the problem quickest will win after qualifying you know where your car is speed wise in relation to the competition you make a game plan stick to that game plan to win this race and I think another key Dorsey is keeping the egos in check we talked about amongst the peugeot squad there's a lot of Formula One Grand Prix stars and bucks they really want to get that first Lemar win so we have to keep those egos in check and think about the course of the 24 hours and then having the juice remember fuel economy is such a key part of running and winning one of these races that's why the leading cars are running the diesel with their great fuel efficiency however we'll have an ax lap advantage over the Persians and how frequently they have to pit hip-hip-hip Lane also for the drivers in the Cruze this is a long day that race doesn't start till 3:00 in the afternoon most of those guys will have been out nine hours already you're gonna be looking at a 40 Aston potentially before you hit your bed tomorrow night I think it's pretty simple no mistakes not on the crew not on the drivers part you cannot damage a car and don't try to find an extra second in pit lane at the risk of getting a three minute penalty work your plan plan your work get it done no mistakes and you talk about no mistakes and we talk about the battles here well they were being waged before the green flag ever flew take the look here at the start look at the double-oh-seven the aston martin fourth car gets together with Bessler in the audi before they ever come onto the front straightaway that was pretty wild then we see Allan McNish and Timo Bernhard the Audi's they're side-by-side Timo gives that spot away and you can see the sporting directors there for outing and Peugeot they're watching this stuff that's incredible action there is more to me look for the inside line it has been Guiding already and we're only three laps in to the 24 Hours of LeMans pedro lamy who runs out in front just about a second gap over Frank Montana his teammate and second then Mark janay then the fourth Pujo by Orica entered by huge the short neck and his team the Orica team Lapierre behind the wheel then we get to the three Audi's but the good thing is when we look at that lap times right now 3:23 nines to some 320 threes Pedro Lamy actually montseny the fastest car on the racetrack but the Audi's within a second or so of the clue shows that's what they're gonna need to be able to keep the pace Cal yeah and I think they're probably going to be a little bit disappointed I would think that the Audi's would have wanted to be within one second you look at that lap the Ponte means lay down at 3:21 5-pole was only a 19-8 or nineteen seven so they have an incredible race pace here and I'm sure that they're not happy about the fact that the gap is not a little bit smaller at this stage of the game but the question is which tires are the Puzo's on you heard when we were talking to Tom he said they thought about starting on soft but when they went with mediums could it be that there's a different compound and could the compounds be spread amongst those three Puzo's that we see in front absolutely I mean what a lot of the teams will do in these early latches really just get try and get a read on their fuel economy will probably see these three cars stopped on different laps certainly the Audi's they've done that in the past and also the tires they'll probably want to run at least doubles on these tires but sometimes they'll take the tires off some of the Michelin tire engineers that are equipping all of the Persians and Audi's here today can take a close look mana to that we're over the first stint and then make decisions from that point on back into the car obviously they're now pushing the cars as hard as they did in qualifying right now but in qualifying on Wednesday and Thursday one thing I really noticed is the fact of the ADIZ really moved around a lot was very twitchy this is really a different design than we saw with the r15 last year and the amount of testing that they've done they did 230 hour tests they've done over 40,000 miles of testing but talking to the engineers they're still saying they're trying to figure out what that back-end is doing and it looks like the drivers really have their hands full when they're pushing the car hard so keep an eye on the backend of the Audi's when we talk about tire compounds what we're talking about is the degree of hardness now a soft tire it will give you the most grip but it will wear out the fastest it also will succumb to heat at a lower temperature a medium compound which is what the Audi started on well it's more resilient it can handle more heat they can handle more laps on them and it's not quite as fast then there's also a harder compound that you would get if it got blistering hot outside and then you go into rain tire so compound all it is it's a chemical composition of the tire and the tire responds within a certain heat range and gives you grip on bearing level getting back into the gt2 battle right now the two Ferraris in the back of your screen the hand cook injury the black and white Ferrari on the left and then the red the number 95 having a good go out of two very different cars as far as the tires go we were talking about compound 10 Cook has really come along with their tire they really have a mean Dominic Fonte pocket drive in the car I mean they've done a tremendous job here this year and coming back me they learned so much last year the carp is really really strong over in Europe they've got Li keen on board this year he's really developed into one of the leading GT drivers I believe now in the whole world I mean he is just such a competitor now obviously our 2009 Rolex GT champion he shared that lie with the burner of course but here we see the Corvettes making the transition from GT 1 to GT 2 with the media success they scored a win last year at Mosport they've been fast right from the get-go here on the whole this week galvan talking to the corvette boys on thursday they were so happy with Wednesday night they said Thursday you know what we're just gonna go out they're gonna take it easy the cars are the most incredible things we've ever driven well they go out Thursday night and they try going fast and we saw Gavin put it on coal and Magnuson got all excited he wanted to stick his car on pole and he had a 58 going which would have put him up there but he got caught in traffic and the Porsche curves so that team so confident really going away from their initial plan Thursday night ain't going for that pole which they didn't anticipate when they ought to be confident we talked about the move to gt2 from GT one the one thing that they didn't take with them or they didn't get affected with in gt2 I should say is straight-line speed because we looked at trusty had the other day guys and literally the fastest GT car out here gt2 or GT one was the Corvette yeah they are absolutely fine they've done this sums and that you have to wonder if they've really been showing their true hand I mean this is the most important race of the year for these teams the Corvettes were clocked at 182 miles an hour down these long straightaways towards the first chicane and down into Indianapolis and the fastest gt1 cars about a mile and now short of that we look at some of the other chief gt2 runners the Porsche was at 180 Ferrari 180 BMWs 178 so they've got a lot of straightaway speed that are not getting right now so 182 miles per hour for the top GT that's you know up against 250 mile per hour for the fastest of the prototypes so that gives you kind of an indication of how that's going also Doug Feehan the manager of the Corvette Racing team says without question these two cars are the best two cars that they have ever ever built if they have polished every single part of what they've learned on the GT one car improved on those areas and then of course in gt2 dealt with the new class rules in the car is fantastic back on board with Frank montseny and the number two Puzo understanding that the 82 Ricci competency OD Ferrari has picked up eight positions from the beginning in these first four laps in his eleventh in GT 2 right now so a strong run towards the front in a long way to go Justin we were doing over 210 on the street in a gt2 car but the lap times they are now so now they're doing 30 miles of walk 20 miles an hour slower on the street and yet their you know their lap time is so much been okay back to you I can see a crash cart Oh Mansell there he's got turned around was it a tire go down you can see loses it there I think that's the run down to Indianapolis they're retired chunks are at least debris chunks out there and we see that some props with a breaking engine frame maybe something broke on that car but there's a big here that is very fast probably in that car approaching 200 miles an hour on the run car looks in pretty decent shape I think it's there we go which already done its damage it's spun it's gonna contact the barrier here left rail looks like it's down left rear wheel looks broken in it commit from the contact on the other side of the road I agree with you Calvin it looks like from the run from Mulsanne corner down towards Indianapolis is where the problem has taken place very fast but you could tell by the skid marks on the road that that accident started way up that road from where he ended up GT traffic now coming into play montseny right behind la me that's Pedro la me in the leading Kujo right in front of Watson Yee and you can see now the traffic is really getting thick 55 cars out here and when you start working GT traffic the closing speed the cornering speed becomes intense I'll tell you what these boys are pausing this GT traffic will yellow flags waving I mean we saw Lambie definitely possums et to cause there with yellow flags in the background so what have to wait and see if there's any kind of penalty there and they're really just prepping these cars is a very fast racetrack the sooner you get the information to the drivers on the circuit there's a problem further around the racetrack the better of course yellow flag is a no passing zone from the point where the yellow flag is to and beyond the accident you saw the pace car that would be one of three pace cars that they will use this year at the 24 Hours of LeMans early world champion Nigel Mansell we'll get this sorted out and we'll come back to the circuit lisara and the 78 grunting of the 24 Hours of LeMans under caution for the first time on just lap five at the 78th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans a la Sarthe here in france see one of Nigel Mansell's sons looking on listening to the radio trying to make sure that his father is okay after the crash he just sustained on the run down towards Indianapolis corner let's check in with Chris Neville on the ground well Brian you said that it looked like one of Nigel's sons is trying to listen on the radio and hear if everything is okay and that's the problem I just spoke with the team they said they can't speak with Nigel right now they say he's on the worst spot on the racetrack for radio communication they're assuming that that is the issue and that's why he's not responding so hopefully everything is okay with Nigel and he gets out of that car and can make his way back over here he was really excited about this race lead if he and I ran into him on Wednesday and he's all excited dropped 25 pounds in training was just elated to be running with his boys obviously this is not the start they were looking for not at all as you see the double O 9 the Aston Martin with Darren Turner behind the wheel come to pit road right now and the pit stop strategy is one that we'll talk about throughout this broadcast one Marazzi samhancock Darren Turner sharing the Aston Martin three pace cars at lamothe this year and that is different from years past yeah essentially this three pace cars which will be spread around the racetrack but we'll leave that pit out one believe down at the second chicane and one will leave for Manoj well on speeds coverage for the first time want to make sure that you keep up with barrett-jackson the world's greatest collector car auction on speed this is a time it comes to Orange County hundreds of restore in rare cars be auctioned off to the highest bidder three days of lights coverage with expert commentary barrett-jackson Orange County kicks off June 25th exclusively on speed we talked about the three pace cars and the difference this year and how it'll affect pit stop strategy Calvin give us some idea of how that'll work well basically as I mentioned briefly you're going to have three pace cars so you've got such a massive race track and a lot of race cars out there they're going to leave from different spots pit lane the second chicane I misspoke is from Indianapolis the third one and basically you have to go behind the pace guys we've seen one of them right now now when you come by the pits pit lane is always open so as soon as the yellows come out unlike our sports car series here in the states the Rolex Series and the America Lamar says you can pit at any time however you may not rejoin that same segment behind the same pace cars you can't wait for the next one to come around now pace lap around here is about six to seven minutes so every segment of a pace car is over two minutes typically under green flag racing you can make a pit stop get your service done in about 90 seconds who talked to the teams this week they said believe it or not we'll be better off doing a pit stop under green than yellow this week Olivier canal Pujo looking on and talked about strategy one of the American LeMans Series teams probably one of the best teams on pit road with strategy and that is Corvette Racing right Jamie managed this year and gt2 compared to in previous years and that's because this year the ACO has opened up the use of telemetry in the gt2 class what does that mean well that means that the car can now get tell the crew everything that they need to know and Corvette Racing built this car knowing that they had that experience in GT one the car actually has 200 sensors on it that they can send information back to the crew with but here for the 24-hours and Lamar they are keeping it simple the only thing that they're monitoring great pressure brake temperature brake bias temperature pressure all four tires the car cockpit temperature you see it there on the board that's what the crew is looking at that's where they get their information it can play big big and safety as well during the course of the race all right Dorothy did you really want your team to ever know that much about my day they it was beyond that even because they could actually adjust the car from the pit lane they don't allow that any longer but they could actually read the telemetry and then turn down the RPM or they could adjust things mixture on the car while you're driving I didn't like that because they could slow you up or speed see one of the Michelin tire technique engineers out on pit road measuring track temperature ambient temperature we talked about this opening stent really being a test for these teams testing different compounds if you're running multiple cars and isn't that the strength of a multi car team that's why we see Audi and Porsche are both running three cars absolutely we get varying weather conditions properly and they're going what the car almost become as like a guinea pig they'll try different tire compounds is it too wet to go back to slicker example on a drying racetrack they may bring it the car that's in a bad track position have that try to go out analyze over two or three laps what the car is doing looking at the lap times and then bring in their lead car and make the change when it's the optimum time so it's really just using all of your cards and playing to the strengths it also helps of course on the multi car team that you get one of those bars if not all of your different cars on of different fuel setting fuel window so they're not all diving for pit lane at exactly the same time it's really critical of course not maybe why you know we may see these guys spread their pit starts right now particularly in early part of the race when the cars are close together for example if all three of those purges come in together it is very tight down there in the pit boxes to get your car into its spot without any problems as they remove the damaged number five of Nigel Mansell off the race course we continue under full course course caution from the 78 running of the 24 Hours of LeMans Vendrell ami continues to lead the 78 running of the 24 Hours of LeMans POJO a lot of folks at home might have been expecting cars to pit under this first full course caution with just five laps in there are the pit windows for the different class cars out there so perhaps strategy just not working quite right right now Justin well who knows what their strategy is because these are very clever guys who have actually planned for every contingency so I know as soon as the yellow full-course yellow came out everyone huddled a little and then settled down so I imagine that you're gonna see something all chaos break out in the next 15 20 minutes but that's why I wanted to show you what actually happens down in our office for the next 23 and a half hours and that is this is obviously in the pit lane this is like for example the Peugeot pit so you can see the Simon pasmo number tree car but just look how well-prepared everything is massive fuel nozzle here to put 80 litres in in literally a matter of seconds into the diesel car and the reason I really wanted to show you is because while the action goes on on track it's all about preparation out here and over there are the pit boxes for where they call in the stands here where obviously all the engineers all the telemetry all the real-time stuff happens but there's probably four times more equipment than that back behind and certainly Persia we can never go near it the perhaps the most coveted sind that we're at Lamar is on this roll eight o'clock over here you can see it counting away 23 hours 26 minutes and 20 seconds left and that my friends is really what this race is all about there's an awful long way to go and that's why prolly no one wants to get out of sync Bryan because if they get out of sync now he really does throw you know maybe another 28 pit stops out of sync so Chris has got a bit more well Justin's just circling back down to that story on the Rishi Ferrari this is one of the spare rear decks for that Ferrari 430 and this is the rear wing on the car and as we talked about this is that gurney it needs a minimum height of 15 millimetres and when this was measured at Tech it was a little bit too short and if you look on here there's actually a part number so this is a part that comes from Ferrari so obviously they got the height wrong that's one of the reasons that the car went to the back of the pack but the the scrutineers here also said that because every other bolt was not bolted in that was another reason that the car went to the back they felt that sits in qualifying with not all of these bolts in that there's possibility that that gurney could lay back a little bit on these long straightaways so really two reasons one being the height number to every other bolt was not in its place you know what that part number means don't you it costs a lot of money alright we see the field behind the pace cars right now and we talked about three different pace cars as we look at the timing scoring screen we see an effect in these three pace cars have had already Calvin oh this is huge right now we'll look at a time and scoring votes and the Audi's just got split from the lead four per shows they're now three minutes behind how did that happen well we talked about three different pace cars imagine the racetrack as a clock and at noon high noon is where the pit entrance is there's another pace car at four o'clock another pace car 8 o'clock around the circle of the racetrack what happened was the Persians got grabbed by one pace car and then they got split from the Audi's so right now the Audi's are a complete one third of a lap behind those lead / Jose that's three minutes okay and we're only seven laps into this race this is a huge huge moment in the very beginning of this race unbelievable stuff I'm sure the ADI crew are really frustrated right now and we talked about it amongst ourselves since it's the first time that we'd air this three pace pace car situation the ramifications of what if what could possibly happen well in seven laps to be three minutes down that's that is staggering staggering indeed right now you look at the foods they circulate around on the via canal Kujo looking on riding on more than number seven right now remember that is Allan McNish leading the charge for Audi here one of the more experienced drivers without E and we certainly have seen the fire in his eyes as you see the rest of the Audi's split by as well of course when we go back to green flag running that number will be reduced it's three minutes right now running at these speeds so obviously get up to racing speeds it will still equate to about a minute and 10 seconds 330s for the lab and you see all the work going on the racetrack right now a very good indication of just how big the impact Nigel Mansell had repairing the guardrail on both the right and the left side so I believe you're right Calvin the left-side rear probably was cut down shop Mansell off to the right and that's where the contact happened we talked about problems early on for several other cars well unfortunately our American Lamaze Series competitor paul gentilozzi and his Jaguar team having problems early on as well in the garage right now and that is not where they need to be you see the crew paying attention to the power plant up front they really felt like they were getting a handle on the engine on this jag but right now problems have arisen very early here at LeMond yeah they had clutch problems immediately when paul gentilozzi went to pull the car out for the opening practice session on wetness the afternoon and it's been a tough road for that team here but they'll rebound they learn a lot here from their first entry at lamar and they'll come back next year even stronger I'm sure Lamar is a celebration of man-machine technology desire drive and emotion it doesn't all happen on the racetrack as well the fans they get plenty of it in the celebrations they are everywhere throughout the week scenery in France yeah it's beautiful this time of year we'll be right back back at the circuit la Sarthe you see the medical crew bringing nigel mansell back in after his tion and dr. Wolfgang Ullrich standing by we talked about this three pace cars how they've been split from the Puzo's Chris how are they gonna recover from this well dr. Ulrich is in charge of outtie sport in dr. o ik we're in the first hour of this race your cars have been split from the Puzo's up in another segment of pace cars is that very detrimental in the first hour it's not nice for sure this is really bad luck because this costs at least one minute and with the time difference between the burgers and a spur left you can imagine how many hours it would have taken to make up one minute so this is just bad luck but it's what the hell - well he's led this team to so many wins hopefully they can strategize their way through this one still a long way to go obviously 23 hours and 17 minutes to be exact so a little hiccup early on a little bit of a technical problem there we apologize for the technical problems with our pictures obviously a long way to go to bring you the sights and sounds of lamothe the 78 the running of it we also talked about problems for the Jaguar and paul gentilozzi Justin Bell what do you know well what I know is is that Paul has certainly had the LeMond Charles and Tribune this week bull you have made a bull you know Justin since we got here the car has been wonderful in its handling but we've been fighting an electronic gremlin that we can't find what happens the Drake trigger that fires the ignition runs along about eight volts suddenly we get a hundred volt spike and it defaults the system we've had every expert available come by and talk to us thank you proven system sometimes it lasts three-quarters of a lap but you don't go hard and last the whole lap but mark did really one and a half laps and it defaulted again let's talk about more exciting stuff on for Sheila more really was its hammered you this year but believe me some of the biggest teams in the world to come here and and been turned away at the gate on the first time but you made such a good showing in Laguna you're probably excited about this old Lake when you get back to the states and the car handles really great and Jaguar is a brand that people are passionate about so you're obviously on to something this was a brave move coming here well to bring a car here in its fourth race is a daunting task we knew that was a problem we've gone to Road Atlanta to to really successful days almost a thousand miles the first day we never took the hood up we thought we're ready for LA well I'm sure you've got an early dinner reservation somewhere and you can you can watch the battle from above but pull would rather be behind the wheel guys certainly you would rather be behind the wheel he talked about his Electrical gremlins well obviously we had a couple of our own here at speed so let's go back to Chris Chris Cole said on the gap that we kind of lost there from dr. Ullrich what was it that he had to say and how are they gonna fight back Oh Brian I couldn't believe you couldn't hear the interview that was probably the best interview I've ever had you look fine well well what it what he says is it's definitely taking a hit to lose that much ground so early in the race you know I think I think he said they're gonna lose at least a minute so losing a minute you've got to make that up now and and they're gonna have to have luck swing back the other way to try and catch them back up the good thing they do have is time on their side but you lose that much time boy they're gonna really have to pick up the pace or do something to try and catch back up to those who Jose which are already a quicker car and just to clarify we spoke about us three minutes right now with the cars running slowly as essentially a third of a lap at speed they've been running 320 330 so just over a minute maybe a minute 10 will be the gap once we get back to a green flag running so the bad news is you can't defend against it I mean the next time we get a yellow it can happen again you've got to stay close to your competitors or risk being split by those pace cars your son Nicolas Lapierre at the end of pit road he had been held there waiting for the next pace car in line crews already trying to take a break on pit road but there plenty more stories down there Jaime how what do you have we mentioned at the top of the show Brian that the American favorite vine lizard Motorsports had a bit of an issue on the reconnaissance lap in their Porsche and they did they actually got a flat tire from one of the pieces of gravel that's around the circuit the gravel around the horse is very sharp and as the gravel gets pushed onto the the problem of getting flat tires that was the bad luck that they had early on but the teams already pushing back through they're up to seventh in class right now in York Bergmeister reports on the radio everything in the car feels free we talk about it every year the sharp stones here at Lamar picked up pieces that look like arrowheads you have to endure if you want to taste the champagne at the end of 24 grueling hours from the circuit lasar the 78 the running of the 24 Hours of LeMans back to racing Atlas R at the 24 Hours of LeMans cars have left the circuit and we're back under green as you see the flags waved there we are working hard to get you an update on Nigel Mansell who had the crash that brought out that first full course caution cook but nest me Pedro la vie that was onboard would hit him off the restart they talk about endurance right now these boys are on it I'll tell you our Livie a canal they're looking at that monitor would not be happy with that Sean they have the lead at the big margin over these boys the Audi Brigade and you don't need me taking those sort of risks I mean they're gonna push flat out here today dorsi but traffic is really the critical factor you cannot afford to touch another car I'm not too sure I'm a great fan yet of this three pace car situation when they went back to green the circuit is off cluttered with groups of cars of different classes and you saw that move up through the inside in the grass I mean this oil boy you know how cautions breed cautions now we got three times as metal exactly what you're gonna have as slow cars go back to green with the faster cars coming through so it's somewhat disorganized is really area there for these guys to thread their way through I think the other thing too is we talked to Alexander Burks the other day and he said you know meet won this race last year by not running over curbs not putting a wheel off and in fact our other two team cars had to change front splitters twice we didn't have to change it at all and yet we see Pedro Lamy early not even an hour into this 24-hour event going wide drop the wheels off the shoulder to go around cars on a restart we asked Alex how much lap time can you gain by using the curbs and he said probably half to one full second but he said you know the other car that it changed the splitter twice last year this year that splitter has been changed in it design but these boys really are up against it right now the three outies running linus turn and they have a lot of ground to make up to get back on an equal footing with the Persians up front and you know we talked about the stones here and how they they're almost like the arrowheads you know when you start dropping wheels off it just brings more and more that flag up onto the racetrack these tires are very very sticky and gummy they'll pick up any of that stuff you look at we're doing a puncture hurt an upright brake and a shock absorber I mean these curves it's just like getting hit in the gut in the fight it will take you out sooner or later those body punches the Audi crew looking on as well as Olivier canal and of who Joe sport as you watch Pedro Lamy and Frank montani as they flash through the Ford chicane back on to the front straightaway to complete yet another lap just one of many that they hope to complete here in the 24 hours this would be 11 laps and they'd put on the board so far now remember they also had the formation lap so it is people I would suspect these guys would have been in pit lane but with a diesel door see especially on the yellow you save fuel under yellow under caution with any car but with a diesel even more so they make fuel when you got am idling around and tell you what I'm so efficient I mean that's one of the strong points they have they make massive bushfire massive torque in they're very fuel-efficient last year we saw the Purdue's run 11 and 12 lap runs the Audi's were doing 12 and 13 and when you read into the press releases from Audi Chris mentioned it in the opening of the show they talked about efficiency I would have to think that now they are thinking they can get one more lap on a fuel stin then the Persians car can't here today what that equate to - it would be - less fuel starts during the course of 24 hours what does that mean in terms of pace about half a second do you have to run faster to make up for them see the welter lmp2 car on pit road doing their pit stop go Mandi Shalini and Shalini behind the wheel sharing that car here this weekend we're kind of in the window right now we would normally see cars come in and do that first exploratory pits my legs etc get the cautions of course have played into that but we're right there look like our teams with fret making moves through there this is one of the our tenses of the car that won several years ago of course with great success this is run by the Carles racing team that you see the second of those two cars and these cars have not been restricted this year the other diesel-powered cars the factory cars have a smaller restrictor including terms of throttling the engine down they also run less boost this year but because the Kaulitz cars are not deemed as factory cars and the latest technology they don't have to run with that restriction of the rebellion cars on pit road as well beautifully turned out machines run by speedy racing team Siva last year it's rebellion this year but Seba still is the organization behind it that does all the mechanical work on that program and really they've turned out a good program that is the team that Marco Andretti is running with here yeah they're based in the UK fully in little it are the formalist a shop Alex peski is the owner big racing fan and he owns a couple of them the company that we see involved their rebellion is a wristwatch and Lemos and electrical connectors or that's the company that he basically brands the winds so big racing fan and I mean they've really jumped around the last couple of years and now running with the big boys that was the third car in the shop we were looking at the 12 car that we were referring to the Michael Grant Andretti will saw one of the engineers with a pyrometer checking the temperature of the pitlane to see what track surface temperature they're dealing with right now it'll help them make decisions on which tires pressures etc that they're going to run as the Puzo's run up front we were talking about rebellion racing Jamie can tell us more one of the drivers for rebellion racing he was saying that for the team if they could just finish in the top five that would be almost like winning for them with the battle between with diesel-powered cars and they packed the petrol gasoline-powered cars it's really not a fair battle so their hope for rebellion racing is just to try and beat the fastest petrol powered cars they're actually calling [Music] well you see the double-oh-seven and the double o9 Aston Martin those beautiful Gulf liveried Lola Aston Martin's the v12 in there there's not a better sounding car at the circuit fan-favorite for a couple of reasons I mean certainly the paint job is good it's a beautiful car but that wonderful v12 does it sound good when you watch these cars on the racetrack door see where they coming at you from a little bit of further away you really see those high front fenders it really brings you back to the old GT 40 days the original time that they ran here in those golf colours like the Audi guys getting ready to pull one of the cars in for a routine service closing in on the gearbox of Pedro Lamy up front he's really held the lead from the pole position that was grabbed by his teammate Sebastien Bourdais now in qualifying Olivia can L sit go for it boys whoever into the pole gets the pole what's he saying now just barely an hour into 24:00 is he gonna let him race this early on or will they run lockstep I would assume they'll stay that goes like this back to my keys of the race game plan I'm sure he's got a game plan and they're gonna stick to that if it's a no passing situation unless the other cars in trouble whatever it might be these guys are completely fully involved it looks like everybody on pit lane is getting ready to do something and go ahead and make note that number three I'm Pedro Lamy has the red mirrors and runs out front now you see the eight on pit road Chris we see Marcel Fassler just gonna take fuel here doesn't look like tires Brad Kepler at the front of the car Brad typically works with the young new drivers at Audi he's doing that again this weekend spoke with him right before the race he said I just told these guys hey let's be really smart out there you guys can't get wound up you gotta be patient you got to take your time that's what hurt them last year the young crew and obviously in this first run hasn't heard them yet looking at that pit stop you saw the first thing that happened the car comes in driver shuts engine off that's mandatory you can't touch the car to the feelings done so the fuel man went to work dumped the fuel and that's all they needed for that stop so then when you go to refire the car you have to start it on its own battery and it has to proceed from there 81 liters is what the fuel capacity is on the diesels 90 liters for the gasoline-powered p1 machines and here we see the ARCIC on the second of the ARCA entries might have done a shock absorber adjustment or changed here they were up on the hood didn't quite good to see what they wrenched on maybe the drive was failing the front bottoming a little bit just work on the right height there you don't want to be done that over 24 eyes Oh literally beat the car to death we've talking to you to shore knock the other day about running to p1 cars he's running two very different one the pujo and then also the open cockpit petrol-powered car but Dunlop's on the open cockpit car Michelin's on the pojo so he has his hand fold down they're not only dealing with the engineers on the two different types of cars he said they're gonna work really hard to keep the tire engineers apart I try to keep everything secret Justin actually guys you only caught the end of that shot they nothing to do with the driver I don't believe they had a fastener issue on the front clip so they changed it off so they just replaced it another one went on he's only like a surface plate but right now here comes the number two Persia I think it's coming in this is the first time we've seen the Peugeot in here definitely the most beautiful car it is only gonna be fuel remember the one boys incredibly strict about who comes over the white line over there so the guys clean in the front windscreen the driver assist who you just saw in there changing the drinks bottle out shirts must be pretty humid he has is not counted as allowed to work on the car so now all goes calm back behind the wall obviously as much fuel as they can get in take the win three [Music] they're not allowed to spend too many wheels here at LaVon they get a bit funny about that but the first time stop for Peugeot and it's clean and safe so the break reset fuel board up the reset fuel is through the ECU through the computer there's a button on the dash that you zero back to a full fuel load and it will come down right accurately - when Europe it's so critical especially with the diesel you can't afford a run out of fuel they can't even switch over to a different fuel pump so talking to the Ali Squad now we see Allan McNish you'd have to say this is the number one car quote the favorite car in the Audi camp everything seems will be built around this amazing threesome of drivers they've got 13 L'Amour winds behind them and they're looking for three more to add to their resumes here this weekend Calvin they're gonna stretch the nine car it looks like one more lap McNish I think it's just gonna take fuel they did set up tires on the other side of the white line but it looks like they're just gonna take fuel on the number seven car now now this is one aspect that pusu feels that Audi is beating them the point from pulling that fuel out of the car - the driver hitting that starter in out of pit lane they said that's where the Audi guys are making up time on that stage they've really picked this thing apart so much that they're looking at the time from to launch up to 37 miles an hour they say howdy is actually picking up a little bit of time there it's interesting to note once again we have that very long for of course caution and certainly these teams want to get some information in the book so not surprising to not see people come to pit road under that first of all of course caution but it also shows exactly what we talked about and that is you lose less time under green flag stops now then you do from behind the pace car stop pitting under a full-course caution yeah the difference between though we saw a little bit of debris get kicked up there by that forward as it came through ten rouge the difference coming down pit lane as opposed to staying on the racetrack forget the servicing of the race car cost you 42 seconds and then you have to add refueling to that which on the p1 machines is typically around 28 to 30 seconds so that's a big number right there minute 10 just bringing the car down pit lane refueling that would be the difference to staying out on the racetrack and just to reinforce the rules here a little bit we saw a couple of people over quote the white line in the Persian pitstop they are allowed to clean that windshield and but perform the normal driver assist George so one disadvantage you'd have if you have a closed cockpit car and you won't allowed to clean that windshield low cost you a few seconds on a few lonely stops so certainly they try to plate everything and equalize everything with the rules they're your leader on pit road Pedro Lamy comes to the pits that is at the end or the beginning of his 14th lap so he's got actually 14 laps in the books not surprising but the long yellow that we had to write now Lonnie to his marks [Music] the three is in the one is in right behind him it's a very clean pit stop at the MoMA member they they always plan for the unexpected so there's always a set of tires out next to both cars but as you just said Calvin these regulations are so tight and you don't want to go a step down especially got a bit of a lead so the instant that fuel nozzle comes off the driver literally pushes the button and the car starts to move in a well develop the launch control system and there goes the sister car on the number one display so far isn't it by Peugeot fluid indeed and in fact if you look back a couple of years Pujo lost this race on pit road more than once with mistakes that were made and they have certainly gotten their strategy and everything sorted out Lommy in a hurry to get to the pits when he came in working his way it's much around the racetrack part of pit in and trying to carry as much speed the time that you can lose on in-and-out laps is substantial yeah but the time you can lose for penalties in the pit lane are huge this year I mean they really put a stringent amount of penalty for the law for making any kind of mistake while on that bitly I've been a change of position they're here we're looking at Lommy who was the leader part of the pit stop I'm not sure but I thought I saw a pers Oh Rivera's flash through which would have been born to knee [Music] outtie on pit road that'll be the 90 Moe Bernard behind the wheel Chris now in this car stretching the same amount of fuel as that Kujo number one and number three now it looks like they're just going to do fuel on this car - they did bring slicks out the Michelin tire engineers took a look at the tires gave everybody thumbs up so Timo launching out of pit lane there Dorsey you were talking about the different ways that these drivers get these cars going essentially as soon as they come in they shut that car down the driver then is sitting and waiting to hit that starter button and getting it to go again now they do have the clutch that they have to release and all they need to do is release it nice and easy and the car just takes off on its own and that is where the pugio guys think the Audi guys are beating them that little bit of a launch they're up to 37 miles an hour it's not just tens of second on the racetrack it's pit lane that counts as well in these teams doing all they can to find a way to win one of the world's most prestigious sporting events the 24 Hours of LeMans Alami continues the lead in his Pujo the battle is heating up today on speed it's not just about the 24 Hours of LeMans toughest trucks as they head to Michigan we're bragging rights are on the line because whether you're for Chevy Ford Dodge or Toyota only one can claim victory don't miss the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series live from Michigan today 1:30 Eastern only on speed the big story of the morning was the problem that nigel mansell had out on course earlier a big crash that brought out the first and only full course caution that we had only got video of the tail end of it looks like it was heavy impact back on drivers right absolutely we have to believe that the left rear tire went down he spun back across the racetrack here we see the medical crew putting Nigel into the ambulance we just gotta hope that he's okay and Jamie how I know you've been down on pit road trying to find the story and find out just how Nigel is doing what do you have we hear that he is absolutely okay that here in France you do get a lot of medical attention when there's an incident like that and we became still in the medical center his wife Rozanne both sides Leo and Greg Koch exit it's good news to hear that he is doing okay when you think about some of the things that he has been through in his career he crashes that he's had right from the get-go when he started racing he broke his neck within a year or so broken again back injuries from Indy car crashes leg injuries in the like and anytime you get a little bit older like I know what he feels like that's what the centuries come back to haunt you when you have a big hit great to hear that he's okay he's a look at the strike of racing HPD car right now zipping around the circuit and those boys have been fast and they've been experimenting with that lamothe down force all season long in LMS that's right they've been running over the first two rounds of Ricard Spa with the LMS series and they're running exactly the same configuration of cars the high Kroft car but right now this is Johnny Kane is really scorching his way out in the front of the p2 pack right now too stretched away from David Brabham since the last caution parents who both cars running very well currently one to several seconds faster than the rest of the field so I would think that both of those teams right now is the question of pace and making sure that you're the round at the end of 24 hours don't stretch the car too hard in the early going watch Danny Watson qualifying the car and I'll tell you what boy I mean you could tell he was going for a pole no question about it trouble gear this could be where that bodywork came to dress possibly it looks like you just want to run off areas this is the car that I drop the front body were creek lipped Orica take a look here the world feed going to show us what happens a little bit of traffic perhaps was there was the hit that's why they had to repair and that's what we talked about just taking chances in traffic he got away with one there just a quick spin the car refire and he brought it back to pit lane but you can't afford to do that during the course of this race it was Jacques Nicolette in the number 24 Oak racing Pescarolo that he got together with and that is not what you want to see class on class battles right there p1 car trying to get around a slower p2 car and just not room for two cars well you would have thought and I would have thought that he saw you coming but you can't assume in this game in this sport there goes one part of the cone that was trapped up underneath there one of the two cones they got knocked over your crew getting ready to be bringing us the pictures here from lamang moving around showing us the different competitors in the different battles on the racetrack so we'll follow their feed throughout this event and as we move to speed calm as well I was assuming that was an incident from earlier in the race and we'd seen a pit stop off the wall but looks like this might be a second incident we see the crew getting ready haven't seen that replay but maybe they're confused like we wolfy just throws up these replays and they're you're not sure how early event to happen so he'll they re behind the wheel of the number six Orica out there right now so I'm thinking that he wants to stay in the car for a long time because if he gets out of it now you know the Shawn akka is going to be there to have a word with him so I'll just keep driving around for a while and maybe he will calm down a bit you can pretend the radios not working but we can't do it eventually you're gonna have to get out of the car so gt2 cars heading to pit road as well two of the Ferraris one of which may have been the 80 too hard to see and it looks like there's still some of those little markers the apex markers underneath the front end of the number six right now confusion here the pit guys almost like they didn't know he was coming see the white line there on screen left that essentially becomes the pit wall that's not the smartest way to stop the car with your foot no but it is the bravest man on the crew there with the board you know he stuck his leg up there could go underneath that spoiler underneath that splitter and this is a talented group of drivers DDA Andre somila re and the Merrick in that car Merrick we've seen at ALM s races running with dice and Racing's of getting a taste of Lamar here but we also understand it was indeed the 82 that was on pit road Chris what's going on down there well it was just fuel for Jamie MELAS really quick stop for these guys they squeezed out what looked to be about 15 laps there and the interesting thing that's a couple laps more than we saw from both the 63 and the 64 Corvette and talking with Rick Mayer before this race he said I think we could easily run 14 laps on multiple different fuel mixtures with the Ferrari the question is if we really lean it out can we run 15 laps and one other thing he told me guys change he said they're capable of picking up eight tenths to one second just on pulse on by just rich ended up giving that thing some more horsepower direct-injected engine this year so their injection system not only adds good power but I think it's also very efficient here is their pit stop and I should say this is the car core so we started at the back his movement moved its way up to seven place right before this planned pit stop and that's great news Booker's remember this year the Ferrari is running a bigger tire and wheel packaging has really created a much bigger sweet spot for the cars not so much on the fine line in terms of having good handling through the course of the race good clean pit stop there but when you run the bigger tire combination you have to run more weight hundred feet back hallway there's 220 pounds and also you get a bigger restrictor at the same time more power going to the engine which you would think would hurt mileage obviously that direct injection that you're talking about brian has really counted that what Chris was telling us him is though that the engine has a lot of adjustability in it if they can move the fuel mapping that much to make that much of a drastic difference well then it's got it's got a lot of latitude well I mean any and you make your choices you think about it you get more power but you get more weight you've got more rolling resistance of the tires but obviously Ferrari has looked at this and said that is the way we want to go we also saw the Orica pitstop seem to be a little bit of confusion down there Justin with cute Hashanah clothes give me an update on that pit stop and you know he gets very aggravated when his drivers getting bold even if it wasn't their fault believe me I've said in those briefings when he says I will not tolerate any mistake you must be fast safe you'll don't crash and win which is the nice briefing to have but when the car came in obviously they went to look at everything and they did change tires there Calvin and you brought that up resembling you into it is because you mentioned the sharp stones off the edge of this track and he really did some damage to his you know to his tires when he when he did that so you know the michelin's can't take a spinning round to get back into the right direction on that it's almost so abrasive is like Paul sprayed there you know sandpaper so uh but there was no real damage they're just still inspecting the tires so but you know Q that you were right if I was him I'd stay in the car for a while they you see the tire engineers going over the tires really look to see if anything's cut down that's really just the smart call you can't afford to bring them pit lane do on the servicing and then suddenly halfway around the next lap the tire goes down you're better to take that time right now yeah when it's an eight and a half mile app it's a long way to come around it is important to note Calvin had the sharp eyes early on that the car that you see in front right now has the white mirrors on at the pujo with the white mirrors that is the number-two Pujo and then the red mirror number three right behind it so montseny has indeed taken over the point pedro lamy dropping back to second place oh good call early on sometimes so difficult to see it can change in pit lane when a change huge on the racetrack can take a look at this hog today they he's not far behind but Lamy has a great run here and is just the traffic the ebb and flow of traffic Frank pulled a little bit they're going through tenth Rouge for a costume exit speed lamby has a run no play it real easy I mean but if it's an easy drive bypass it'll be okay if he pushes issue they'll just both back off at the safe level too early to be strapping with your teammate too early to be scrapping with your teammate indeed and we talked earlier about how the hand cook shod Ferrari was running and running well and it still is which like Dominic Hornbacher is on pit road let's get a word with him yeah Dominick farm biker just handed over to his teammate Allan Simonsen Dominic the big question is is is the can the Ferrari on the hand cook tires run with the other cars in the class on the michelin's of course I mean yes you see we drove up from form eight position to second place and uh it's really good I'll car tire just performs very well the only question mark really have is if our tire can handle a double sim so we're just making sure we're making sure every double sinem so that's that's the question for the extent how many stints will you do before you start trying to double stint I think I will if I go in the next time I will do a double sim so let's see well that's the problem they had last year they saw a lot of speed out of these tires but every time they tried to double stint the hand cook tires they had blowout so that was the big question mark for 2010 and what they really wanted was the weather to come in because they have an exceptional intermediate and rain tire remember this is a team that won in class at the Nurburgring 24 hours finished second overall with that tire and that car combination so it is a very potent combination so when you think about it putting pressure on the michelin's that says they have done their homework indeed this Dominic's father host Vaughn Bob Cruz runs that team and he has to be one of the most shoppers and engineers in the whole paddock area so certainly they've got great crew behind the driving squad as well watching the 4vets run and run up front as we have seen many times before here at lamothe Penn Corvette their 50th anniversary here at Lamont can they take another victory in class we'll find out right now on front stoop ojos Frank Montini continues to lead the 78 running of the 24 Hours of LeMans not the only battle on the racetrack don't forget three other classes running in as well one of the most competitive is certainly gt2 when the number 76 EMSA performance Matt Moot Porsche is leading right now the poor vets had been up but now it's Porsche Justin drivers with Michelin look really closely at where patterns and also even looking at the casing internal tire we've been cutting open during the week so it's been a little bit of a science with LeMond the speeds are so high we don't want to take too many risks but there is the availability to double stint the tire so if we can save 25 30 seconds without changing the tires the way the regulations have changed in the last couple years it is a benefit but we weren't just ready to do it our first hit yet so obviously first driver out in the rotation for a long race hopefully ahead what describe what it's like in that opening stage of the race actually quite calm as I remember once you start to get the leaders come near you game it really does caught up doesn't it yeah it's been a balance I don't think I've started a race at the same here you really want to get out there race here with some great teams and some great drivers and the ego sometimes get the best of you but right now I'm at a place in my seven have less to prove in the first hour I really want to give good feedback and see what the tires are gonna be like through a stint during the race and not a sprint race because we all want the TV time at the beginning so no it was good mark and I were just keeping an eye on the bets they're very very strong those guys have been working hard but we think we might have something for them either way we're having a good time we're going to see the unwind I'm shoulders and I trilliant stuff Chris I said number 11 cars in Johnny car got to get behind the wheel they've done fuel and they're just finishing up the tires on the right hand side just finishing up that right rear and then they're gonna send him back out talking with Dale white who runs this team this weekend he said you know our program has run well all weekend long bringing in men Willie Piro has really lifted everybody he knows so much about Lomov he's really helped the team and guide them in every way trying to find a setup on the car they said the one thing Manuel he wants to do is get the card and continue to go faster and faster push it to that edge and we kind of had to read them in a little bit because Johnny's new and also called racing is a gentleman drivers so we couldn't get that car reeling up on a knife-edge we had to make sure that man really realized we have to make a go our that both these other drivers can drive - Wow is all I can say about what we were seeing on screen the re 7e selling answer everyone you're right about that not looking at mirrors or whatever but I mean that was a high speed end of the circuit and to be banging like that at 200 miles an hour is just not really advisable paying attention Dorsey it had to be I mean there's no way that you were to close the door though so the speed seanix not gonna be the only person who I was to have a word with him when he comes back last year I'd be finding a way to get that driver out for right now and put somebody else in some to talk about this because that was one of the high-speed parts of the racetrack here on the run down to Indianapolis in qualifying at 214 215 miles an hour the next right hand real corner coming up doesn't have a name is the probably one of the best corners on the racetrack and it has no name this one right here down a couple of gears the drives on the left foot brake a little bit here settle the car down down through Indianapolis short squirt down to our nage slowest corner on the racetrack 50 miles an hour right here that's where we all like to go down and watch and you look at the hillside there and you tell we're not the only ones like to watch from that area from Indianapolis and Arnage one of the spots where you need to pull down on the belts and be brave that's right here the Porsche curves coming up we heard the poojas are doing that flat that's unbelievable this one sort the men from the boys have typically come down again and then through this section here he qualified at least flat out through that second spectacular stuff just threading the eye of the needle through there that night brings in a whole different perspective as well and it's so difficult when you ride on board either the push o or the Audi to determine how much of a breed or whether there is a gear change because they are so quiet this came here through the Ford chicane and on to the front straightaway you're just talking about the cujo's one flat through the Portia curve - it was pretty interesting to read some of those pujo releases and them saying that because of that new pavement in there it is so smooth that those guys are able to hold those cars flat out through there and watching their hands the info onboard cameras they're just using no effort at all to steer those cars just so easy in and out and to realize they're doing that at about 200 miles an hour just an absolutely mind-boggling the French speed has given us some curb hopping looks here that's okay to use the leading edge of the curb I mean you're gaining some time like that no question about it but slamming across are letting the tub get hit by those by those bumps is not what you want Corvettes looking really good right now currently running one two in the gt2 class so the Porsche is looking strong they've made some pit stops in the last couple of laps now it looks like the two yellow machines are back out front Olly Gavin leading the way in the 64 car we only see that run is number four in the US and number three but it's 64 and 63 here for Lamar and that is the problem as you watch your timing and scoring monitor if you're watching at home as well with almost a three and a half to four second lap you can lose a guy coming into the pits very quickly we talked about how close it's been on the racetrack in the contact that we've had I mean take a look at the paddles we saw this moments ago so Gila yari in the Orica a Stephane mukha there on the aston martin trying to go down through the inside there and that is huge that's about a hundred and eighty miles an hour right there now yari just closed the door on him Justin [Music] you can see this on the fuel here on the gas car then it is on the diesel so there's quite a big difference not just in the capacity obviously 19 litres but you know this is a firm favorite uh very popular team as you mentioned earlier the Gulf livery is probably one of the best sold merchandise is up in the business village and obviously a very well run team so they are pushing hard and there's two races in lmp1 isn't there there's the diesel race and you can't really blame stuff on Luka for that incident because he certainly had to speed and he was on the right place in the racetrack to make that pass stick a yarek just not really paying attention mirrors I think you know just maybe kind of gather himself up from that last wall and something any case that could have been catastrophic at that speed you need to get it gathered up with you here at 200 miles an hour around this racetrack there's a look at the pit stop for the double-oh-seven the crew chief there woody on his headset just watching all of the action and then gives him the go-ahead on the radio and then that renowned little finger wag go go go and there is the aura composure now remember the other car the open-cockpit car running the dunlop tires on petrol the Orica whole one chassis but then the Pujo as well and the great team thing for that team we talked a little bit about it earlier is that noob - on ack in the end oracle squad has a three year program with Pujo and they will always have the latest and greatest that push up builds a new car they will have a new car and this is the exact same spec who'sa factory is running and that's slightly different than what we saw last year with NRI pest control on running a POJO as well that's right off the last year's result when they finished fifth very close to the Aston Monza's best-in-class the essence of course entering the fourth they're just off the podium puke was asked by his sponsors that was awesome how do we get it to the next level and he recognized the fact well I need diesel technology and he went to Persia and they formed an immediate collaboration and he said he's getting a lot of support he's been fully integrated into Peugeot sport they have five personnel from Peugeot sport webbed into his team and they're really showing a great performance here so far running forward right behind the factory cars early in the girl riding along here with Allan McNish in the Audi is who go down the backstraight you can see the speed difference Oh shortcut that is not what Patrick long wanted to see that is his teammate in the 76 the Empson Matt boot car it had been leading in the GT category I wonder if his foot slipped off the brake it looked like he was slowing down and up and all of a sudden he took to that infield area like his foot slipped off the brake and the D cell did not stop there yeah I think you're exactly right there Dorsey and a problem that is not what you want to see and did he flat spot the tires we'll have to find out remember that entire EMSA Matt mooks squad very talented indeed rain Eric Patrick lon both have all OMA victory under their belts and certainly lots and lots of talent on that team this is from onboard the BMW take a look [Music] way too late that's Patrick belay one of the four factory drivers you very surprised to be a mistake from him you know surprisingly lace with all that speed the tires weren't locked up the brake was on because they like sunlight say all four tires were still rolling now tell you the other thing I saw is smoke out of the back of the number seven that was a little surprising watching that going away shot there on Allan McNish now obviously the diesels will always smoke a little bit but that seemed to be a bit odd let's go back one more time and look at this incident the Patrick pilet look at the back of the Porsche you'll see the brake lights on and a lot of speed on - even in slow motion you see he's got way too much corner speed but he's not locked down Calvin no he is and you have to wonder maybe the door was closed on him in a little bit but that is total commitment and you don't need to be doing that second hour into this race see the flying lizard Porsche as it zips by Allan McNish about to zip by and there's a pretty good indication of the closing speeds from a p1 diesel to a gt2 Porsche riding on board with Allan McNish 0-8 and the Aston Martin the signature plush Lola asked an on pit road the battles continue from here at La Sarthe just an hour and a half in we got a long way to go like I said throw your remote control away speed will take care of you today whether it's on TV or online all right race fans if you can't get enough of the 24 Hours of LeMans feed calm with uninterrupted live streaming of the race from the green flag to the checkers we'll see every thrilling moment just go to speed comm and search keyword 24 hours I told you you remote control away we've got you covered the entire way from green to checkered any from here at lisara miss a moment that why are you wearing a pajama I've got my little racecar slippers on right now Timo Bernhard behind the wheel of the number 9 Audi and we just saw Nicolas Lapierre flash by in the Peugeot the Orica POJO actually for Timo I think that was probably kind of depressing he caught him up in the braking zone went right past him and off he went adios and the four cars in fact made two pit stops of the leading diesel-powered cars it's the only one that's made two pit stops here today so they are certainly doing a great job they're in support of the factory Persia's the cocky run one two three led by montani [Music] one of the big things that the Audis worked on since last year they had to find more straight-line speed you can debate whether the open-cockpit versus closed cockpit is more Aero efficient one of the things they felt they were down on pound they certainly worked on that in terms of getting back and those strictures that were placed on them by the a CEO of the organising body here this year in trying to slow them down they've got their power back we spooked a burette ski the engine man for already said yes we're back to the same powers last year when the aero department Dorsey they've really trimmed this car ride to make it more air or fishing down these long straightaways we saw from the track speeds this weekend that they're really on par with Persia but still don't have the lap time your mileage is one way to win this race if you can actually get that elusive one extra lap you know over your competition like you talked about earlier in the show you know get that one lap and then spread that over 24 hours and so on timo trying to hold on to the back of the Pujo in front of them and we got a great indication of where the advantages are and you saw the smoke right there coming out of the back of the Puzo did he rich it it up pop it what happens down here in the brake zone between the Pujo and this Ferrari Toni Vilander behind the wheel of that car and tema goes down the inside Tony didn't want to run out of room tried to turn in and just misjudged I don't think I was a big hip you see those fences there on the rear corners of the Audi they are susceptible to damage Justin yes the leading number two people farmers in town including a great job on the front of the field there they just clean the windscreen there is a little Frenchman good job' is little because he's half way around upside in the cockpit they are she I think he dropped the drinks bottle onto the floor oh my goodness that isn't part of the program but they analyzed the tyre wear that was a big thing they had the new michelin's up on deck and at this point in the race can I go double can I go triple stick which means three sessions all of those tires has not been actually been able to be explored until race time all the data they gave to practice of course he's done in 15 starts because it's not a clean run so this is really the first real tire data on a double stint in tyre coming up to two hours one hour and 44 on those tires I mean could smell that so they're actually I'm sure very analytical right now of how this is play out through the rest of the race this may be the first indicator of what the fuel efficiency is in the respective camps because montani stopped on lap 13 he just stopped on lap 25 and McNish is doing the same thing so right now there is no advantage for Audi in terms of the fuel stakes he's none that they're showing and that is not good news now the Audi's had closed back to within a minute of the fujio's up front from that three-minute gap that had been initiated by the pace cars but still they need to find some advantage right now it doesn't look like they really have one Chris what you see on the Audi stop roaming this is still sitting here guys and he's still feeling up as the 8 car is coming in so this is going to slow them down homing dish just in time just in time gets out of pit lane he would have had to Holly been pushed back to get his car out so that saved them probably at least a good 3 4 seconds as the 8 car came to pit lane at the exact same time the key there is communication between the crews what they mapped on the pit Wallace Ozzfest ahead to really slow it down a little bit down the pit lane or on his in lap to create that space for Allen we saw it last year with the purge they didn't do that in the early and we saw it with corvette racing at Sebring this year if you'll remember and you know what a disaster it can be when things are right ourself s look back underway in the number-8 there's less time lost by festered slowing up in pit lane and who would be at the back there with McNish in the pit box and the children after work it out by pushing forward or back one of the pitlane officials they're actually walking in front of the car one of the problems with that launch control is basically it's holding the throttle open now the driver can dump the clutch a little bit and use the brake obviously to miss anyone but it gets very crowded down there particularly at the end of the race particularly with the factory cars there's a ton of photographers we're off asleep down there with the TV cameras and everything else and is very easy to someone be asleep at the wheel and walk right in front of these cars they're exiting so whether they are lucky or they're good they dodged a little bit of a bullet the timing was perfect for the Audi crew on those pit stops right there but somebody who did not dodged a bullet with twelve Otto Kahn team and Chris what have you found out about about their hopes of getting back in this event are they done [Music] well it looks that way as the team is packing up the garage and Brian will man who's looking forward to his laps here and the mama Brian that's not going to happen what happened with the Lola we believe the gearbox has failed Mike city lost all Drive the quads you need which after the gearbox and differential we don't know who had a transmission failure [Music] we struggled all week although we thought we had in hand car ran well this morning ran well okay Thursday during the day so it'll be some time before we can hold on find out for sure this is a tough place but I didn't expend any quite this though obviously very frustrating for this team having to bring all their equipment over from the US and then out so early Justin what's going on at you're in well the poacher number Wanda the number tree just came in and it was exactly the mirror pits don't both the others but I just want to show you something that showed us around the preparation every headstone of every practice session and near freak qualifying the run this week is videoed and then the team actually watch it and you can bet it's all about time emotion I have to say our dear our various states has been probably the best example that everyone has ever watched of how to change tires on the car and have new people around so Peugeot howdy-hi crough they all watch and the team that you're very competitive they sit back at the shop watching the pit stops time time again come in so fast and get out so clean Chris Timo Bernhard in the nine car back into pit lane this is the final Audi to do its second pit stop Michelin engineer walking around the car looking at all the tires it looks right now like he's probably gonna give them the thumbs up not to put tires on the car so this is gonna be a fuel stop just like we saw with the 8 and the 7 and then Timo Bernhard gonna do his his final stint in the car won one of the crew members I didn't see reach in on the right front corner and pulled some debris out of one of those tunnels and that's one of the things we saw him last year debris getting caught up in those radiators and the cut the team having to push the car into the garage blow out the radiators so the team really taking their time making sure those radiators don't get clogged up and that diesel milder not overheating it felt revised system this year we saw it last year it's a great effect how the Peugeot has had like those filter screens that they change during the course of the race I already has something similar this year and they even went to the extent of during some of their testing soiling down the racetrack to try and simulate a dirty wet condition here at Lamont just to see how the radiators and the intercoolers would deal with that kind of condition pit lane getting busy right now and the strategy is beginning to unfold disappointment of course for Otto Kahn I think I identified them as the number 12 car that they run at under the American LeMans series remember different numbers when you come here to France you don't get to run the old tried-and-true that you run back in the American Lamar Series competition and look at this Wow that was unbelievable Allan McNish the little Terrier he knows this racetrack like the back of his hand and he had to use all of the racetrack and some more there to get around those two slower cars that was sensational stuff course Otto Kahn one of our United States entered teams could have fixed that car that had they chosen because the rule state you can you can fix the gearbox you can fix her in you could have fixed the input shaft as long as it didn't split the case as long as it didn't break its way through the outer case of the gearbox or the differential you can fix those things but they've just deemed it too much McNish Wow confidence dedication commitment those are words that certainly describe him if you don't believe it from the races that you've seen him run so far just go back to what he just did moments ago you want to see confidence and dedication you're looking at it right now from the circuit law source it's diesel power that leads into 78 the running of the 24 Hours of LeMans it's pujo power indeed that is up front in the hands of Frank Monson ye you won't miss a minute of the action today live on speed 8:30 to 12:30 so we'll be with you for a bit longer here on speed and then speed comm will pick up the coverage from 12:30 to 6:00 Eastern Time and we'll be back live on speed 6 p.m. all the way to the checkered flag and a little post race celebration as well so as I said early in the going throw your remote controls away you won't need them just you your television in your laptop and maybe some of your favorite beverage at home and you can enjoy just as the fans around this 8.4 miles worth of beautiful racetrack through the French countryside are enjoying as well the competition it's been a tense all weekend long as it always is when you come to the four classes well represented this year and a problem for the art car the BMW stopped on course right now the driver out trying to get an idea looking underneath the back end of that car perhaps some type of a drive issue to mule ax who was driving that car cording to timing and scoring and something's gone adrift in the back end of the car getting a replay we don't want her braking just go straight wonder if it broke the next stop it did give it a little wiggle Brian this car does run to a different specification with the rear suspension to the ones being campaigned in the American Lamar series by the rehan Letterman group and also though schnitzer matina campaigning these BMWs here in the LMS as well so certainly the cars don't have a lot of running on them they've only built those cars in that specification about five to six weeks ago we spoke to Charlie lamb the other day who's the leader of the Schnitzer group running these works factory BMWs and he said we don't have much time on these cars but we're going to give it a go every didn't want hurt the paint job all throughout the labra competition 50 number saline out there having a good battle with one of lulu golf on Corvettes and there's the team BMW right now through Indianapolis the keys they're baduk is that he has to stay within 10 meters of the car if he abandons the car which is deemed if he go just over 30 feet away from the car the car is effectively out of the race he needs to stay close he'll be looking underneath the car maybe feedback in radio communication with the group you saw him pit lane to see what's going on he's under way again no he's not you saw him get back in the car and that's what he did Calvin he got back on the radio to report what he was looking at a meet the car to see they'll want to give him some tips and things to try to do if it's a broken an axle or whatever it's something you drive by in the back he can work on a now he has got it going look at electric eyes oh yeah that's the problem trying to get that car all the way back around it not shed that carcass and turned it basically into a large saw blade that can do damage to not only bodywork but suspension components brake lines as well he might have just had a puncture and he felt it wiggle down there we saw it wiggle on a fender brake zone and the tire wasn't completely flat yet he's looking underneath the roof and it goes flat on that shows his experience he wanted to check full the car overlooked Ron diagnose what is wrong with the car before I go any further that is awesome stuff and now the job get it back to the pits as quickly as possible without the saw blade that Brian was talking about cut in the back of the bodywork off now we have Ferrari versus Porsche Wilander versus Leitz right now and this is a battle that has been raged throughout the American Law Series we've seen it with Ricci competency and their Ferrari versus the flying lizard here we see it amongst LMS competitors as well and it looks to me like the ACO has done such a great job we're coming up with a real package here to make these two cars competitive in fact gt2 probably one of the strongest classes in the boss series type competition throughout the world leets looking to the inside of the will hitch crash one of the Fords 70 has had a big crash look at the rearrangement of the pack into that car Shawn system I can see looks like the rights up for our left subframe as you're looking at it you can see the tire wall how it has been moved to the side that is the VDS racing Ford GT one of the very quick 4G T's that we have seen good results from an LMS competition look at that guardrails hit that rut on the right side where the tires are all missing that tire water bundles a bundle of tires is where that cadre of that kit we had placed it right to the right there you can see that portion of the racetrack just after the Dunlop curves help this car if we get a full course caution Bueller getting then getting the art car BMW back around and yeah that was down heading down towards from the Dunlop bridge down towards tete Rousse where the problem was for the Ford and I believe Miller out of our NAS right now so he'll have to get down through the Porsche curves and of course one of the problems about driving a crippled car through that very fast section of racetrack it's difficult for the prototypes coming up to see you as you're well off song that's why those flags is so important to spread around this racetrack that you see them he's getting the blue flag it's like think he knows this car everybody's faster than me right now now can the carcass just stay with that rim that's the deal I mean as long as it stays hooked to the remedy can go around it's not hurting the car to do what he's doing right now that's the key remember Michelin's really had their technologies so in place if you did have a puncher that the card really stayed together wouldn't just shred itself to pieces by getting it back to pit lane this car on Dunlop's of course with BMW and Doug done a great job in slowing the car down enough better to spend an extra minute getting the car back then 20 minutes worth of damage to the bodywork and I think there's a bad news for him as well because I don't think he was out of our knowledge I think he has much further back down the racetrack than that so a long way to go and probably wishing you had that compact spare in the back of most of the BMW 3-series cars that are out there so that is a bit of a problem for him but as Calvin said you've got to get the car back so that can be worked on we talked earlier one of the keys in the race I think of us from you Dorsey minimize your mistakes this is a great battle right here between that Porsche and the Ferrari the felt amaya Porsche regarded as possibly the strongest Porsche in the field three factory Porsche drivers wailing at Richard Leitz behind the wheel right now and Tony Wilander taken over from Jean Alesi in that Ferrari and the Corvettes are in the pit lane two hours into this event it's team Pujo up front with Pujols running one two three and four and then the three Audi's running 5th 6th and 7th Mormon racing lon 10th Road the number 63 Chris and just finishing up the fuel in the car the car goes up of the Year 63 car en Magnuson handing over to Johnny O'Connell this car running about 12 seconds behind the sister car which will likely be in a pit lane on the next lap this team taking no risks after the crash at Sebring so they're making sure that they pit these guys different laps very quick Binstead once again by the Corvette boys and Johnny O'Connell's down in a way they really have this deal work government when you come here to the mall you're only allowed one gun and two guys working on that wheel change as opposed to four guys in two guns in the America Lamar series and what they do is they really keep it simple they work on the same corner at the same time they don't sort weights switch around and loosen one nut and go to a different corner I love this because they may lose a second from the ultimate pit stop but you're not going to get a penalty and they're still done in around 20 seconds as fast as anyone up and down pit lane and you're not allowed to burn out your tires leaving the pit lane like you see in the United States that's not allowed you saw Johnny slip the clutch get the car rolling and just thunder on up the road hi Croft racing on pit road as well and one of the things that Danny peeks it is we do exactly that the KISS principle keep it simple stupid something done faster and then make a mistake hi Croft racing team having to adapt to those pit rules as well we watch them trying to come up with the perfect combination of tire change the other day and basically what Danny being said said was we do it exactly the same way we do it in the a LMS we just changed one side at a time and by doing so we don't have to relearn any type of different method when we come over here you see the Fuji oh come off the corner with some smoke out the right you're right we've been watching that you're not supposed to see smoke off these diesels and definitely come out of our nog each time every time they accelerate from the low-speed it's blowing black smoke out of both pipes left right side bangs it's Marino Franchitti behind the wheel right now as the 26 the hi croft racing HPD heads back out on track and you know they have such high hopes after the problems they had at Sebring this year they want to make sure that they take the big one we understand the art car has made it back to pit road Mueller along the long lap probably the longest lap he has ever had around Masaryk but he is back in and the car looks to be in very good shape for the problems that he's had a testimony to him but also to that Dunlop tire to hang on like that for so many miles Justin yeah just watch what they're doing there apart from the fact he made it round which the sensation is business as usual when you get back here the whatever the damage the refueling has to be done first you couldn't go in the garage you have to get the feeling done before the car is lifted up on the jacks the safety thing here a little more in case you can falling away which I don't think you'll do with that tire that I'm looking at right now it is absolutely shredded but it stayed on the rim there you know I mean the rim stayed on the car and as you were just saying that is disasters in a GT car if you lose wheel torsional rigidity in the chassis to be able to handle three wheel driving as easy as a prototype can but they are checking inside the wheel arch they're orbiting all the suspension pickups make sure nothing has been thrown around damage and even at that speed obviously flight rubber can not the heck out of bodywork and actually this rather beautiful paint workers obviously withstood the test of the ultimate of you art in motion certainly has been art in abuse round here but the rest they will have suffered from that but don't count this team out they obviously have you know a long way to go but I just said all that and they just dropped it onto some wheely things and they're putting in the garage so you know what the great thing with me guys is kind of ignore half what I say itself they're pushing it in I'll give you an update what I know what's happened the error was showing through that fire no question this car is taking a substantial get no question I see a lot of damage except for GPS the 74 GTO boss Linder he had his problems out on the racetrack as we continue here in the 78th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans it is Greg Monson he in his Pujo out in front continuing to lead action all around this racetrack and it will be that way for 24 complete hours when we come back from the break we're gonna take pitstop to ourselves lead if he will be here with you and we'll see you back at the mall and the lien lmp2 car for the British striker racing team as the electrifying Danny wants behind the wheel all three of these drivers in this car very similar in physical stature two of them very equal as far as ability and the team owner Nick Levin is coming up to speed very very quickly hi folks lead me back with you Scott Road also on board here with Calvin fish as we say thanks to Brian and Dorsey for a great opening stanza and we need to update for you down at the BMW Motorsport pin the tip ships are boys Justin tell us more to build the Korean they removed the central undertray not the rear diffuser part you can see right now but under the middle and when they took it off that is aluminum that was completely cracked guys across the middle I don't know what caused it obviously if it made that impact something underneath has been broken and so that's where they are right now so that was not just a blown tire that was the effect of something that was obviously a bigger off they hit a curb or something ripped it apart underneath guys we will continue to follow that story each and every year at the 24 hours of them are there is the traditional ACO the Automobile Club Bill West who run L'Amour have their Thursday press conference typically at this press conference the next season or maybe two seasons ahead the next rules package as well as various other points of news is released well this year was a particularly interesting press conference because the new rules and regulations for 2011 Kris were released and I know that you're standing by with the CEO of the Panos Automotive Group the series mr. Scott evident to tell us more yeah Lee just like a racecar driver keeping their eyes as far down the road as possible Scott Atherton is always going to be looking to the future in the American LeMans Series Scott this week the rules coming out for 2011 big thing about lmp1 and to the cars that currently racing get to be grandfathered in so that's great these cars aren't going to go away but some of the rule changes we are going to see for p1 and p2 let's discuss those well you're right it's it's good news that the cars that are currently competing will be again eligible next year in lmp1 they are going to essentially make the engine specifications consistent with what today is LM p2 LM p2 goes to a new format which will feature exclusively production based engines with a very significant but workable price cap so big changes coming in the prototype categories they're also going to do away with GT 1 something American the mall did this year the focus is going to be on GT 2 something that we have great racing in the America of them all series tell us about GT 2 I think it's another example of the ACO frankly following the lead that we had you know we made a decision a year ago that we were just going to recognize GT 2 they've added a little subtle difference that they're gonna have a single GT class but a pro and an amateur and we found about out about this just recently ourselves we haven't really decided yet if we're going to incorporate that the reason being is you say we have spectacular GT racing in the series and we also have the benefit of the GT Challenge class another series and you know class within the series that's working very well from our perspective right now it's a don't fix it if it's not broken and also the Intercontinental Cup now this is a change that's going to have a great impact for everybody in the United States it's the new global series that the ACO is developing this year fatigue loom on October 2nd will be the first example of the Intercontinental Cup and having an American event part of that so expect all of the international entries out Apuzzo Aston Martin many of them that you find here at Lamar also at Petit next year it's been expanded to seven events the biggest news is that they've included the 24 Hours of LeMans series that something the ACS the other big difference of course is the inclusion of sebring so that will be the first event of the Intercontinental amar Cup next year we're fortunate because we have two of those events in the American LeMans Series season sounds like we have some great stuff on the horizon for next year absolutely enjoy the event thank you very much it's great to be here it's a great race yeah there's this several points and you can find this online folks at speedtv.com or the mall org as we see Marino Franchitti about to be overtaken by the Peugeot 908 the other one is - Calvin is that the traditional test day is being reintroduced and it will occur at least a month before the event yet I think the sky had the turn the American masters that will certainly have a factor on their schedule for next year they really need to create a window for the American LeMans Series team the us-based Yves you want to come here to the 24 hours race and compete to be able to do that without having to buy second cars and things of that nature where the cars would just get out of control so they're go look at that closely see when the ACO announce that tes takes every will need to be here and then trying to adapt their calendar accordingly if you've just turned onto speed welcome to our coverage we have got former GT one 24 hours of lamont when a Scott Pruett onboard with us this year Scott you and I have been sitting back in the green room watching what have you observed what do you like what you see I am surprised at the aggression already I mean you seen a lot of guys doing some stupid things and as we talked earlier you just can't make those kind of mistakes you tear up a corner on a race car you rip off a rear corner tore off even it down a down plane I'm up front you're gonna get yourself in trouble just the first couple hours you see all that stuff going on just it's just surprising to me this is the AF Corse of Ferrari with Toni Vilander behind the wheel and you will see Toni and Giancarlo Fisichella at the American Lamar series round in Salt Lake City which is exciting stuff they'll be running alongside the resi Coptics journey team this is I remember right at the top of the show we said we were going to start the event with 56 cars what was the sister car this one when the mecca silo was occupying that was taken out with a severe crash not Niki behind the wheel and they were unable to repair that and also one of the drivers in the car was not going to be passed by the doctors at Lamar to be suitable to take the start of this race so that's what brought us back to 55 cars to begin this race from all reports all you have to do is look at the point standings but from all reports from their rivals that a of course a Ferrari and in particular Chicago Fisichella has been driving that car brilliantly in the Lamont Series in Europe [Music] seventy-six cargo for a bit of a wild ride earlier in this race with Patrick peel a behind the wheel and he's trying to break or overtake one of the BMWs down into the first chicane but it looks like the car is running strong right now right in front of the Corvette but boy that Corvette you won here with a Corvette team in GT one Scott but to make this transition to a new category they seem to be bringing every lesson that they learned in GT one to the plate this year that's what's makes those guys just such a hard team to beat here at Alamo I mean you learn so much year after year after year I mean it's like our team going to Daytona there's always those little bits and pieces they made the change from Goodyear to it's a Michelin after I had left there and they just taken one step further now making GT one - GT - but as you said cowling I mean everything every little bit you learn at this race you take it to move forward - to get on to it Chris you got something with you on yeah yeah Nagisa just got another 63 car yeah I know you've been so happy with this car all week long tell us about the opening stint in the gt2 class we came in just took fuel was a little bit of a problem with overall grip and the balance of the cast we need to worried a little bit on it but so far so good I think we're in for a fantastic race previous years you always had to compete with the aston martin now you're looking at ferrari BMW Porsche how is the Corvette against those three makes good open instead [Music] NASCAR Sprint Cup fans mags will be making his Sprint Cup to view next weekend at Sonoma and he'll be racing for the Phoenix racing organization of course aboard a Chevrolet this is the mark videus racing team and you saw Mark Van der Stratton the team principal in the pit box earlier watching bears line does do a brilliant job to nurse this heavily wounded car back to its pit box now if they get this thing turned around it'll be a miracle it's there's a lot of heavy damage on that Ford GT and it was kind of strange where they got off and it was not a typical place where you would get off here LaVon a lot of damage on that car and what was what was interesting as we saw here on TV we kept coming back to shots of him limping away and it was way to go this is where the driver gets out and the team manager beats the heck adam thanks for coming back I didn't want to come and find you for our Canadian viewers this is the team the mark VDS racing team this is the organization that Scott Maxwell races with in Europe in the FIA gt3 series let's get back to pit road [Music] the team is just pushed the gt40 the garage drop the car onto the skates dropped it into the garage and looking at the back end significant significant damage at the back end of the girl the back end of that car and then you can even see up at the front where the bodywork just isn't fitting together because so much energy went through that car and pushed that frame around some of those body panels up front just don't come together as cleanly as you would typically see a car running at lamothe taking a look this this team is going to have a lot of work to try and get this car back on track I'll be very surprised if we see it later in the race they're a very diversified team they currently complete a compete in world FIA gt1 they compete in FIA gt3 they compete in Rally Raid and Moto 2 yeah formerly the 250cc world motorcycle championship now gone to the different tech specs and different bikes so they handle both two wheels and four chicken with Justin standing here with David Brown drive with a high cross team David he got out of the car just now you look very calm and collected but it was anything but calm and collected in the car he went through some cycles on the same set of tires that were a little bit confusing to the team yeah confusing to me as well believe me that was bigger to begin with we're carrying a little too much downforce at the moment but we could trim that off as the race goes on and all of a sudden it felt like I had either a puncture or the rear suspension failure or something it was it was the weirdest thing happening on in the red was just after the Mansell accident as well so I don't know whether we picked something up from that and it got lodged in somewhere because the car was an absolute handful but over a period of time it did slowly get better and better and then you know all of a sudden I could put more load into the tires get the temperature of the tires back up because I think I lost a minute tire temperature as well so we're in a bit of a catch-22 business situation and then it sort of you know came a lot better so I've no idea what when we're all scratching our head to the moment well you're here yeah you're scratching your hair around me but Marie knows in the car now brookey here really in a prototype like you and racing with a mentor like yourself what advice did you give him when it comes to getting out there in the throws of obviously you know the race in there in lmp2 but against with the faster cars and slower cars what advice could you give him well I mean no Moreno is pretty experienced I mean you know he's no he's no rookie himself and he's been out in his career he's been other tribal sorts of different cars which really help in this type of racing so he knows what it's like to be the GT car those ones like to be in a bastard car and he's got a lot of awareness so you know it's just little bits here and there but it's not not like I'm trying to go into the drain job so finally he obviously you you've won a lot of three in different categories when you look at this race unfolding you haven't had the perfect start all you can do is stick to a plan from now on but not have any more setbacks well yeah I mean obviously we've lost some ground but it's very early in the days which is what we're still learning about the car will be making adjustments as we go a lot we knew this was probably going to happen we'd like to think after you know four or five six hours into the race you know we'll have a pretty good handle on and so we just have to wait and see where we brilliant and of course led by Duncan Dayton there this is America's hot favor here at the race okay back to you guys yes we wish Marino Franchitti a good stent we know that his Indy 500 winning brother Dario will be watching so Dario you wee brother is doing a good job and his first run in a prototype at Lamar as Fred begins his run for four in a row we are back and this is what out he wanted to see remember for pirgos versus three Audi's drum up for the number three per show of petrol ami remember these guys are at the very end of a triple stint we've just saw mountainy make a pit stop one lap ago and change tires that's obviously the strategy did he lock that right front outboard has he had contact there to cause this damage that's a lot of smoke coming from the left it's gonna be right front can't really seem to make it out exactly what's going on there right now he might even seven actually she's a doubt Allah either he's caring a fair amount of pace here well you can see look at the black mark notice on the ground tires down absolutely see that and I think he's going to Fosca I mean you know you see that rub that he's leaving on the tarmac behind him I mean he is carrying a tremendous amount of speed and even when the damage race caught the downforce just forces that now and at that nose down onto the ground will be dragging that and if you have to change one of those that's gonna cost you significant time in pit lane that's one of those things where experience and just pacing yourself you just you know you can keep grinding off the splitter on the bottom you're tearing up the race car you potentially tearing up a tire at that thing come apart rip off some bodywork that's what you've really got to slow down difficult to do but it pays dividends when you get back to pit lane and stop rubbing your hands together here he is the diminutive Scotsman Allan McNish within sight of the oricon I know right this is still Nicolas Lapierre behind the wheel and although it's in different colors it is as good as a factory Peugeot it's the same as the other three the tonal Peugeot sport you ride on board with McNish now coming out of Mulsanne e puts the pressure on him he'll try and get the draft here is the number one car now hits pit lane for its pit stop [Applause] so yes the pitlane was getting very active in anticipation of the you know the week number three coming in but it was standard pitstop with you said Montaigne just come into the number two car so they had to wait for the number one to come in they are prepared though for the number three to be wheeled into the garage I just saw them signal to the mechanics inside to move the body work the spare body work out of the way so I guess they're going to try and get it in there if they ground that front away the top shell if you like on the bodywork imagine it like it's two cars from the front bodywork the top bit is easy to take on hope it's the spread to the main superstructure if you like the deep three car comes in is an awful lot of excitement out here amongst the mechanics the Marshalls and Holly every French Marshall is absolutely [Music] you have to fuel the car before you do any work on it otherwise almost on the schedule driver change I mean they drive it the next time it's not even gonna get in because there's no point at the moment they're going to will into the garage so I will give you an update in a minute there's a lot happening out on track but right now hojo have got an unexpected hand be Delta okay the car is being spun around on those special floor jacks into the garage and I'll probably have to wait awhile to get more access guys both Valdez are in look at this this is crucial this is important this is significantly ala Magnus just did a 13 lap run that's one more than the Persians have been doing today Chris yeah Calvin I noticed it too the nine car was in while we're at break and going back to that last pit stop McNish was in first and then the nine car came in so obviously they're trying to stretch out that seven car right now Tom Kristensen getting into the seven car Romain Dumas getting in the nine car here so both these cars enough room in pit lane here shouldn't be an issue as both cards want to get out it looks like the nine crew a little bit quicker right now than the seven crew behind them watching the team on the eight car that was in there really looking over these cars right now they're looking down the tunnels making sure there's no debris and those radiators and make sure everything is okay now they're gonna do tire changing as soon as they get these tires it you would not believe the amount of engineers pulled out E and Michelin that are looking over these it tires looking at temperatures looking at pressures and both tech cars get out it looks like the nine is going to stay in front of the seven Justin what do you have oh my god we have French government the mechanics are throwing their headsets across the floor I reckon they're not letting me get near it but it's obviously worn away perhaps the lower wishbone mouth I can't see everybody hit the leap mechanic he's kicking his stuff all over the place [Music] I reckon they just had a terminal situation there the tub is worn away underneath as far as I can tell it's not a very friendly environment down here but Eddie's the downside guys of the bodywork Chris Chris well I just wanted to show you guys as these tires are coming off the Audi's that we're looking at the nine team right now both outtie engineers and Michelin engineers taking a look at these tires Scott I know you've done so much tire development over your career in IndyCar and in sports cars what exactly are these engineers looking at these tires coming off their first stint in this race well they're looking at temperatures and right now with these failures that they're having like we saw on a number of car especially with the pugio they're looking at any anything that's a suspicion they're looking at then pressures are looking at where they're looking at shoulders tires shouldn't be feeling they're looking at really stretching this I mean three stints is quite a while we see the Pujo going back together at Cal and I are just we're just talking about this I think some of that could be related to how fast it came back to pit lane I have to Andrews door a little bit yes he had a problem but the speed he was carrying down that straightaway I mean he had to be doing 150 miles an hour and that's just gonna push the monocoque and everything down onto the ground and you know certainly the team were watching it too it might have been the team manager there he's just saying calm down slow down just get the car back here so we can take a look and that was a dejected Sebastien Bourdais he had his helmet on there he is that is for de who was about to climb aboard and Simon Kesh no and Lommy it's data we have a rule in our team and Ganassi if you have a tire problem you go to pit lane speed period because it's so difficult as a driver to be going 200 miles an hour and go 100 miles an hour or 50 miles an hour because you think you're going slower than you're out then you've been and you truly are because so much damage can happen it feels like you take forever to get back to pit lane but here you go it means a perfect example to see if you would slow down and take care of it we don't know for sure we're assuming that this is going on now but there's a good chance that because you're carrying all that speed you just grind in everything off the bottom of that race car you saw up all day just dejected the team member just holding him on the shoulders the man who still lives just 10 minutes away from this race circuit finished second here twice and had an awfully strong car put the car on the pole and he didn't even get to see any green flag action here today when the mechanics were venting their fury you saw a gentleman go in and push the bodywork away and have a look that was Bruno for me the technical director to make that final decision and although we have not heard from anyone from the Peugeot sport camp yet the actions say it all now one thing that we have to think about did something fail on the car to cause the car to be down on the deck maybe three the problem was already there with a barnacle maybe some pickup point pulled out so don't want to give a too hard time to fedra right now but you know the speedy came back at looked excessive but maybe something that failed prior to the smoke we were seeing we did see through driver changes executed one was Frank Montana for Stephane Sarrazin the other was Mark janay for Anthony Davidson Anthony the young British driver ex Formula One driver has been drafted into this squad because David Brabham was can under contract to race here for high crop David was able to race for Pozzo last year because high crop didn't have an entry so Davidson got that dream phone call and he already had a dream ride really because he was driving for Aston Martin Racing and he got the dream phone call and George Howard Chapel said Anthony you've got to take it this is your one big chance to drive for Peugeot and Lamar they were looking at their rally star Sebastian love to potentially fill that spot on the squad for his schedule looked a bit too hectic to him to be able to do all of the testing and the development that was necessary to be here he's obviously here on race day so his schedule was open this weekend they didn't feel like could fully integrate him into the program and obviously Anthony got off to a great start with that win at Sebring but right now you'd have to be thinking if something did fail there with the pickup point what are the personal team thinking we've got two other cars out there right now something else gonna go amiss with those cause they are taking a good close look at it but from the way that the mechanics came away from the car it was more it kind of gave me more of a view one whatever happened was terminal without without question and - is it something that that let me because if you fail a suspension part typically you can you can change and you're changing up right you can change those pieces in parts there's something more severe that's taking place hopefully we can get a deeper story I mean we're assuming a lot at this point in time of what's good going on we're still kind of thinking that you know potentially a tire went down come back to pit lane too fast but until we get the true story of what's taking place we don't know for sure but whatever it is just makes for a bad day for an unfortunate so far Stephane Sarrazin leads away from Anthony Davidson Nicola Pierre there is Rakhi Mike Rockenfeller then Romain Dumas Tom Kristensen so it's three versus three three pojos left against three Audi's [Music] and it's been absolutely no shortage of drama in this year's 24 hours of Lamoure involving a lot of big teams if you've just joined us we lost Nigel Mansell and their genetic earlier with a crash with Nigel behind the wheel in the opening hour the American auto can team retired within the first hour there's been very close racing on track and we've also had some pretty heavy crashes the most recent form of drama involving one of these works / Jose with Pedro Lamy behind the wheel allan mcnish was out there and that early still and he was fighting as hard as he could and now he's standing by with crystal [Music] yeah and the second Allen was done with the car he immediately comes over to the pit wall to work with his engineers Alan you guys really got hurt by that pace car coming out put you over a minute back now the cars about a minute 45 back any way to squeeze any more pace out of the Audi's do you think we're on an economy run now we're pushing hard there's no question about it the pace car basically it put us a minute bank they also dropped us from just being behind them so they load them to focus just keep getting away through just a minute pressure from them we've just got to keep on pushing and see I mean son unfolds as it goes on saw you working over here with your engineers how many changes do you think you might try and do during this race to get some more speed out of the car I don't need any he can adjust a car through a race you've got to keep on going that was the more don't load infer right what we're going to do afterwards I think I'd have to disagree just a little bit cuz you continually kind of make changes I mean you can make tire pressure changes you kind of monitor what's going on this could be some disinformation from him at this point in time looking at a good scrap here between Frank value and guy Smith guy is in the front car there the gold rebellion and then this is the double-o I signature push car Andrew what do you have [Music] well they have just won here in the break covered on the number three car you can see it now completely with a cover on they're not doing any work this car it's finished about the hardware said sure what a devastating blow for Sebastien Bourdais you know the local man for the more he so wanted to win this because he took the power position but they had this problem in federal army was at the wheel he's done too much damage and they are not working on the car as you can see I think it's history for the number three the first blow for Persia indeed meanwhile in GT two things are looking great from Ricci competency only the defending champs in GT to two-time defending winners work their way up in the third place behind the Corvettes which is an outstanding performance so it's three American Lamar series teams in the top three positions this is the Jay LOC Lamborghini and yet again more tire dramas we talked about a Brian talked about the gravel traps here have these very sharp stone so if everything anyone goes off the racetrack and drags any of that debris back on they'll lay around there if you go off line a little bit suddenly you'll catch one of those stones now literally slice like a razor or slice through these tires and also we're seeing a lot of these teams starting to push a little bit more we saw with the Persians and the Audi's all of those squads on triple stint on the tires and it literally wears them down you don't have as much rubber to deal with a cut one of those stones yeah it's pretty amazing to me that we're seeing all these tire problems this early on and the fact did I mean I think it's it's all somewhat reasonable to have the confidence to triple step personally I probably would a double stint take a good look at the tire see where I'm at especially with some of the other teams out there having the issues they hit they they've been having they decided not to do that and now we're seeing some tire issues so that's definitely going to be a continuing story that's going to continue to develop and unfold because at this point in time we're continually seeing all these issues which is just a surprise at this point in time there we see the two Audi's Tom Kristin just got around remar dumar he's now running in fourth spot right behind the two factory / Joe's than the arc of Persia so TK now up to fourth and dumar just on the second bag very very sorry seen inside the Peugeot cap car three the pole sitting car and Sebastien Bourdais being consoled it was quite the move that Kristensen put on dumar while were in the commercial break Romain did not do his teammate all that many favors as they come onto the front straight once again there you see where the traffic can do through the four chicane tonight we do my Tom Kristensen he wants by right now you'd have to say if you know the speed the only campus ain't sure where you go we're gonna try catch some Street burgers up front this is one of those situations where I hope the team manager for Audi's going you know what guys let's let's go let's work together whoever's faster let's get them in front to see if we can work together so it's a it's one of the situations where this is you know you've got to be smart the worst thing that can happen these guys have any contact with each other we've seen some awful cook within the last couple laps who seems a really hard race between these guys boomer is certainly one of the feisty earth drivers on the Audi squad because he and Timo Bernhard being loaned to outtie by Porsche for this year as they were last year one thing they haven't this year we see Timo shadow under the DTM stars for Audi running in GT 2 in a Porsche so you'd have to think the favour was repaid there a little bit and maybe they haven't Emo's toes dipped a little bit in the water this year to learn the track maybe we'll see him while their sports cars in the near future Stephane Sarrazin Anthony Davidson Nicola Lapierre one two three four Peugeot and then the Audi's of Christmas and dumar and Andre Lotterer and then Adrian Fernandez the best of the petrol powered cars for Aston Martin Racing is in seven NASCAR race day built by the Home Depot returns tomorrow at 10:00 in the morning 10:00 Eastern that is and makes his race debut to break down the fallout from Pocono that is NASCAR race day built by the Home Depot tomorrow and ten from Michigan and the tracin racing follow being pushed backwards into the garage Johnny Cocker stepping from the car and just communicating what is the drama and race and racing we'll have to find out meanwhile the Corvette the 64 the class-leading car with oliviere beretta behind the wheel a multi time winner here at Lamar had so much success with Orica and now is a firm family member with in Corvette Racing and it's been so far so good for the boys from Corvette Racing first and second in gt2 just being overtaken by the p2 leader danny watts for striker racing two and room area with an update on persia down there stand with Bruno Fuhrman who's the technical director Bruno just get you what was the extent of the damage this means you have to retire this certain of the three car we got damage on the top fix it what's the car brought back into quickly travel back into the toilet did he bring the car back to past the original because he said hope to win this race yes for everybody on this town is true but the other two cars going very strongly I don't know everything is okay we hope like that father to remaining gone merci merci there you go that sounds more like something out else failed on the car now they have concern with all the rest of you goes out there and you can hear it his voice and kind of get some understanding Chris Bo's got him down the Drazen camp just checked in with Dale wife to see what the problem on the 11th car was he said they picked up a vibration about a half an hour ago they initially brought the car to pit lane they did a tire change they were hoping that that would cure the issue after Johnny Cocker took it back out on the race track for a little while he said that vibrations still persist so they brought the car into pit lane they didn't want to see anything happen on the racetrack still so early going in this race if anything occurs out there and they can't get the car back they are done so they said let's bring it into the garage we're gonna put man Willie Piro behind the wheel and we are really going to look over this thing we can see them shaking the suspension looking over the drivetrain really trying to figure out if something is loose somewhere in this car before they send it back out on the racetrack well they lost an engine on Wednesday evening which meant they really lost a lot of valuable track time and with the rules say you can only have two engines for the whole race week that really curtail their development of the car on Thursday evening so they didn't qualify as well as we'd expect and they'll certainly check to make sure there's nothing obvious and then Pierrot has so much experience here they'll send him out and see if he can analyze what is wrong with that car and here we are one of the rare times when you've seen the 82 Ricci competence you own a Ferrari this is great to see this car and what a comeback story it is GN marina Maria broody Jimmy Bernie as we like to call him behind the wheel right now different combination in this car for the past three years the stable driver is Jamie Mello the others have changed around him but the rest of the team is rock-solid led by Giuseppe Ricci and Rick Mayer these guys its enormous ly gratifying to Giuseppe Ricci to represent Ferrari and his Ferrari of Houston organization and beat the European Ferrari teams on their home turf and they're trying to do it for three consecutive years I mean they are unbeaten in all of the big endurance races syllabuses Lamar to today they want petite that year they went see bring the next year they want 40 in 2009 they went Sebring this year no matter stellar run when you talk to Giuseppe Ricci about that level of success he said it's all about putting the right people in the right places Scot and that's the same at Ganassi and then you have to let those people do their job don't look them over the shoulder don't try and double-check everything they're doing give them the time and the resources to do their job and that's what you seppius done so well with this car and they've done such a great job this is such a wonderful story with them having to go to the back of the pack working their way back up it looks like they got a better put a bit better fuel mileage strategy then what Corvette has sounds like they can go at least one lap longer which as you and I talked about earlier that pays pretty big dividends at the end of the day overall kind of surprised with with a lot of the turmoil that's happened so far in this race I wouldn't have expected that at all I mean especially this early on we're only a get three hours in and and yet we're seeing a lot of issues here we see them the BMW art car how they make this way out of [Music] that's seen any action since that pet star been putting in the garage and Dirk mule and that problem down in the first chicane we're obviously lost a tire ball saw something in the under tray as worldly it's always hard to follow we got the problems for the twenty eight beached will it be able to get going this was the last entry into this event this was the sixth of 56 entry Marat Stan and Ralph met three engines running you can hear that question answer and this this potentially could be some of the issue because you can just see some rocks dropping out from inside that fender they get that car back up on truck on track then you get allow those sharp rocks back up on the track and that could be what's causing a lot of these issues we've seen from the tires we're coming back to Lamar as a winner is a special feeling one guy who knows it as we watch this replay check this out there was contact with the crown Ferrari the Tracy Krohn Ferrari and the 28th came together the rates performance prototype and the receipt crown Ferrari Tracy Krohn behind the wheel currently and just getting back to the BMW our cars now 19 laps off the pace oh I would assume has been in the pit lane since we last saw her in the garage and effectively taken them out of the running you cannot come back from that sort of deficit with the competition that was in this class this year getting back to that point earlier saying coming here as a winner as a special feeling Alex verts knows it all too well Andrew lucky shoes on years ago Alex when you were just the youngest man ever to win this race I remember you had your lucky different shoes on yeah that's true but I didn't f them all my f1 career I'm gonna let you were they know they didn't let me exactly are on then his and Frank Williams didn't get their idea of it Thank You Lamar I can do what I want and last year they were lucky again why you been concerned about the problems with the number three car was a big disappointment for Sebastien Bourdais yeah big disappointment for the whole team [Music] to be honest at the moment not just focus on my car because that's my job continued Davison doing a good job out there the moment it's such a long race and we tend to look at the first few laps and hundreds of a second difference that race tells you many stories over the 24 hours if to just be patient sacrΓ© markings go is lucky she's on Chris [Music] we can see the Crone car getting pushed back into the garage from some pretty good damage up on that left front corner I imagine probably Traci feeling something in the steering wheels into the garage get it up in the air take a look at it and just in front of them the 63 Corvette team was setting up for a pit stop so they were obviously trying to encourage the Crone car to get pushed back as quickly as possible and it just went into the garage as we see Johnny O'Connell making his way down pit lane here it looks like it's just going to be a fuel stop here Danny banks up on the 63 sign guiding Johnny O'Connell to hit the spot this car going 14 laps right now so you guys were talking about fuel in GT too we saw a 14 lap run by the ricci competency on a Ferrari right now I'm looking at that team watching them the Corvette through do this pit stop and this car just did a 14 laps dent Danny Binks said they did a 13 lap run this time they're doing a 14 lap run so we might not see that big of a Delta between the Ferrari and the Corvette at this point in time Johnny o gotta get them hitting the high side get that Corvette back out on the racetrack remember in their LMS series they run the e85 fuel so it's certainly a learning curve for that team to come here with the same engines essentially but running the different fuel is the same fuel for everyone in gt2 when you come to Lamar's even drawn out of their own fuel tanks down below pit lane see on screen one of the film - Maya Porsches and that's a little bit of a surprise I thought the seventy-seven would have been higher up in gt2 the olfactory lineup of lead bleats and penslar and it's just dragging its heels a little in comparison to the Corvette's and the racy Ferrari it's not quite there it was one of the more fancy cars coming into this event Marlene Tommy earlier this week at scrutineering boy we learned last year we know if you think a problem that was amended immediately they were out within the first two hours of the race last year so team filter my approach on Porsche now to make amends speeds coverage on the 78th running of the 24 hours of Lamar can't in use beautiful weather for this running of the endurance classic and if you've just turned on let's bring you up today it was pirjo at the start the next three positions filled by Audi and I got a completely clean start there was contact early on so two for Nigel Mansell crashing out we believe it was a tire that let go and although you see Nigel being carried from the car to the ambulance we understand that the former f1 world champion is okay crazy here between the jock Nicolay and Suhaila yari just not seeing each other and an awkward accident patrick pillai just went a little too long a little too deep i was able to escape in the aims of performance mat mood porsche look at this between Stefan Bucher and Suhaila re not looking in his mirrors and making it very difficult but deeming is talking point of the race so far is that this number 3 works Peugeot 908 out of the race the tub to severely damaged petrol army behind the wheel watch the reaction from the mechanics they know that there 24 hours of lomar 2010 is it done that would and this just happened a minute ago Peter dumb brick and Fred de roca in the normal judge for Pegasus racing coming together in the Porsche curves and that was close because there was an Audi right behind ya top Kristin right in front of the C he may have cleared through the traffic there maybe got someone offline we're talking about some of these tire issues you can see on a racetrack there's so many problems that have taken place accidents and on and offs and every time you get on and off especially to these gravel traps all these cars are bringing up all this debris back up on the racetrack which just causes havoc with with tires this is daruka trying to get this winded nor my job back to pit road and he is there he's as good as there anyway and see how stiffly this these cars are sprung there's not enough suspension droop like that left front will not come down far enough to touch the ground just the way the suspense is are set up on these prototypes for the amount of downforce that the cars create they're almost like a little go car as you can see they're not a lot of suspension movement as the right rear drops down on the ground so as he makes his way back to pit road if you're just turning on Stephane Sarrazin for peugeot leads away from teammates Anthony Davidson and Louis d'Ivoire for the Orica 908 then Tom Kristensen remained in my Andre Lotterer the next three works out he's Adrian Fernandez is the best of the petrol powered cars from Aston Martin teammates amp and comping guys Smith is the best of the two rebellions in 9th place overall and the first of the college outings the art is Christian Albers leads the way over Neil Yanni and in Frank value and Americans Scott Tucker in the second Thomas Audi runs 13th overall the Orica Persia sits third let's hear from one of its drivers [Music] Andrew Olivier panis sir beautiful summer's evening out here in France but your car going really well for sure the car doing very well I mean when you have a pusher here I think is one of a bigger opportunity to us to doing a good result the car looks pretty well Nico did Street in three stint on our friend doing a very good job wait and see no now you're on a slightly different strategy to the other cars because you came in earlier the Mansell incident well we have a bit different strategy because on the beginning of the race Nico have a problem with real tires we don't take any risk beat changes and again we stopped before maybe I owe your long probably one courage you really enjoy the moral which is are still preparing for tomorrow [Music] Theresa mean and the car is beautiful thank you very much back to you in the booth great way to open the Lamar series earlier this year and the pestle a and Paul Ricard in France and they finished within the top five and troubles and spa but that baraka 908 will be one to watch great to see the high craft racing HPD with Marino Franchitti behind the wheel currently second in class they're still chasing their fellow HPD car of Dany Watts who leads the lmp2 class force tracker I think they've really got a good strategy here they've had so much success of course over the last three or four scenes in the air America Lamar series and they just had a game plan coming into this week not many of that team has actually been here to LeMond before but they're certainly a very experienced crew led by Robin Hill and they just said all we want to do all day long is ties and fuel tires and fuel and I think they've got drum that through the whole team that is their mantra right now and even though the Stryker cars out front by a little bit run across the lap times does David Bratton said in his interview we have a lot of downforce on the car right now that's the safe way to go for now until we get through the traffic more effectively you got more braking ability with the race car in that frame and if they need to find a little bit more speed they can take some of the arrow off and bleed it off a little bit Scott and then be faster at the end of the race when it really counts just gotta be smart you've seen so many teams make it just huge mistakes here and it is so costly and we're just gorgeous in the opening stages of this lap I mean it's race it's just I'm just for the family and friends of the hi Croft racing team members we should all be very proud of them some of the members had never been out of America and here they are at long as we see the Audi's come to pit road all and just get caught in between that film of my Porsche a reminder to you that our coverage here on speed continues to 9 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern live when we farewell you at the bottom of the hour will be with you all the way through on speed comm back here on speed later tonight at 6:00 p.m. Eastern the Audi's are in the nine and the seventh do mile caught that gt2 car leaving its pit lane there's Tom Kristensen looks like they're on the same strategy remember they triple spin with Alan McNish he takes off cleanly and looking for doom out there a little bit of a traffic situation right there so tight down in those pit box if the car in front of you has made a pit stop make it really difficult particularly if they've got the tires set to do a tire change Jamie what you see there was no tire change for either the number seven or the number nine cars just fuel for both of them is very uneventful very clean execution of both of those pit stops even see some of the photographers were in the way but these guys get in and out of the pits which from a driver standpoint frustrating I've had these guys and every good nasty guys are young I mean it's frustrating that's really tough on some of these prototypes too because they have that launch control system and not really you know effects a lot of things it's not the driver just with his right foot on the gas pedal there all the electronics are taken over at that point to take another closer look maybe a little slow-mo on this Pujo see if we can diagnose it a little bit closer here we are they pushed it back take a look at the left-hand front tire I thought it was flat coming in but it as we look at it getting pushed back in the garage we'll keep a close eye on that it's tough to say it's certainly not shredded it's up on the jack so the little dolly there's not gonna be pressure on that right front corner when they wheeled it back in but it certainly looked like it wasn't shredded or anything so I'm not starting to think that maybe the bottom wishbone pulled out of the top or something and that put the car on the deck and then he just knew that what the tire issue hits that's why he had the speed in the car bringing her back and if that's the case for peejoe that's gonna be an issue they're gonna continually watch with the other three cars I certainly hope it's not something that's gonna come out to bite bite him in the end first thing I'd do if I was the team manager be certainly they haven't looked and assess the damage to that car keep the rest of the drivers out there off the curbs because that will certainly do it t if you start running these curbs really hard you may gain half a second but they'll take its toll on the chassis if there is a weak point on pit stop rotation Anthony Davidson got his number one car the defending race winner out in front you just were riding that with Stephane Sarrazin who regains the lead of this race aboard the two and already at this very early stage in the 24 hours of lomar we of course have had retirements most notably that of car number three the Peugeot 908 of Sebastien Bourdais Pedro Lamy and Simon Pegg know who was so excited about this race this year the or Mansell Ginetta SciTech of Nigel leo and Greg we lost the auto con Lola the 74 GT and unfortunately the rocket sports jag is Alan Wong this year a reminder that you can reach into the race and ask the biggest drivers the questions you would like submit your questions to Mycroft Racing flying lizard race and racing and speed comm get the answers for you get more at speed calm 24 hours for more info hey speaking of speed calm we're coming up with live streaming at the bottom of the hour for many hours right through until 6:00 p.m. Eastern tonight so you won't miss a thing from lasar for this year's running of the 24 hours of them all and here's a good race right now in gt2 first it's went by second was a Ferrari and third you see all three three leaders first second third and gt2 right they're going at it yeah this is a fascinating battle and is gonna seesaw a little bit we're talking about the fact Ferraris getting slightly better fuel mileage Corvette have come here with an awfully strong race car and put the Danny banks his crew chief on the 63 just said the car is awfully strong is it I am confident that nothing will break if the drivers don't hit anything out there one of the superstar line ups in gt2 the Ferrari is in Jamie [Music] [Music] driver change it looks like at this point in the race they're doing single driver changes only with a driver change no tires on this particular pit stop they have left pit lane Andrew what's under it well you'll like this story Jamie because you perhaps know for the first time in almost 20 years remember racing and the star master series in oh seven well probably they've got a problem at the moment with electrical or on the Ford GT but I just want you to contemplate something only fifty ladies of ever raced in the history of this race coming to this weekend now we've got the three more in this board but in 1935 think about that 1935 the word ten ladies racing in this race those ten ladies nine of them were pretty sure let's go back to the booth to contemplate and what you hear to see that race and driving while certainly racing is in the bloodlines with Natasha her cousin is actually formal current form on one driver fatah Rosso Sebastien Buemi and then grandfather George competed here some fifty years ago back in 1960 so certainly she has a great heritage behind her as we see the president of the FIA Jean Todd on the left there in the middle we should just give an update that's just great to happen attach a gas tank here because she broke her legs very badly after a huge crash in the world gt1 championship at Abu Dhabi earlier this year so she's getting around on crutches when she's not inside the car two wonderful efforts speeds coverage of the 24 hours of Lamar is brought to you by Porsche there is no substitute [Music] once again reminding you that at the bottom of the hour we'll be switching to speed comm if you want to follow Lamar coverage all the way through speed comm for live streaming you won't miss a thing I'll have a couple of extra little features as well during our webcast and then we'll see you back here on speed at 6:00 p.m. Eastern tonight where we will start their world you again until the checkered flag flies and we'll have some post race coverage as well where will we stand when that flag flies so many more stories to be told Scott Pruett I know that you're alarmed that already we're not even at the four hour mark and we've already lost five cars from this race the attrition rate has been mine I'm surprised and I actually have to take a step back and say that I don't think there's as many tire issues as we as we initially thought oh then we see a lot of rocks and debris and stuff on the track which which caused a bunch of issues and I don't want to get throwing to blame out there where it shouldn't be I mean some of those things are going on up there and I've been more than anything when we talk about getting into a 24 hour race you know you really need you know settle in and set your pace I mean run strong run hard but run smart and I'm just not seeing it going on out there today the double-o 8 signature + signature + Aston Martin Christian al was there in the 15 car and it spoke to him it's crude and airier Leah this week and a real character contouring the MCUs Salah modest I was good for a story and talked to him about where he expected this season to go and he said I really had high hopes of being one of the Audi factory drivers either at either in DTM or in one of these fifteen pluses that didn't happen so he's back with the collar squad and they said are you gonna run anymore in our LMS and he said no the car quite honestly is not up to in terms of having the pace needed to win races so we don't believe we're going to compete anymore in LMS this year and with that car that not being a factory car of course it does have the old regulations for the diesel technology so it's not as restricted as both the Peugeot and the ar-15s this is work going on inside the sonorous Spiker squad Peter damn Rick was involved in a heavy crash with a p2 prototype and Cal just to go back to that kalus car put a period on that a bizarre occurrence overnight with Oliver Jarvis and Christian backer ood were victims of theft at the track last night backer ood lost his suit and helmet as long as well as his bicycle and Oliver Jarvis lost his helmet his hands device to race students basically his whole driving outfit he was able to get together some spares he didn't have a backup but it was all stolen from the commissary motor home they got those new regs this year at Lamont gotta run the latest and greatest generation of safety helmets which some of the manufacturers are charging like five grand for he spent the Johnny O'Connell he said I've got a heck of a deal in about twenty seven hundred bucks which absolutely broke his heart of course and absolutely I mean there twenty five hundred dollars on up this is how it stands at the moment car number two Nicolas Minassian Frank Montaigne and Stephane Sarrazin well in control over the sister car of verse and Co and in p2 it is thus tracker HPD boy their number one goal is to try and be high cross so far so good the Pycroft boys won't give it to them easily the Ford GT former f1 driver grows your and much doing really good work and if you're a Corvette banners looking great for our
