[Applause] still to come track and field competition gets underway at the bird's nest with world champion Tyson Gay of the US beginning his Sprint towards the 100 meter Crown challenged by Jamaican Stars asapa Powell and Usain Bolt plus the world's best kayakers navigate the Rapids and Race For Gold welcome back since its spectacular debut at the opening ceremony one week ago the National Stadium here in Beijing has been relatively dormant or so it would appear the reality inside Fierce preparations have been in progress to transform the infield from the form you saw at the opening ceremony to its current competition-ready state and today the revamped Stadium awakened with the fastest race on the Olympic program immediately taking Center Stage here with more Tom Hammond Louis Johnson and Otto Bolden it's opening day for deck and field at the bird's nest with the beginning of competition in the men's hundred meter dash and his action begins in the hundred the big question mark surrounds Tyson Gay the American who is the world champion we last saw him on the track July 5th at the U.S Olympic trials in Eugene Oregon he had won the hundred here he is second round of the 200 when he pulls up with what would prove to be a strained left hamstring Automotive you won the four Olympic medals competing in the Sprints for Trinidad and Tobago you've been in situations I'm sure like this what about his status for the Olympics well Tom this injury took me out of the world championships in 1999 any hamstring injury to a sprinter in the Olympic here of course is a devastating injury he has since said that he thinks his hamstrings 100 but he has not competed at all in Europe no Olympic champion has ever won the Olympic title without having European preparation so the first couple rounds are going to prove a lot about just exactly how right is Tyson Gay's left hamstring we saw him there back on the warm-up track here in Beijing and of course he not only has to contend with his injury but also with the presence of Usain Bolt the world record reset that record beating Tyson Gay earlier this season in New York 9.72 is clocking using the match against Tyson Gay as motivation in New York I was going there to be Tyson keep beating me year after year every season I look at him and say I'm coming next year [Applause] I never looked at a car when I got Ambassador I looked and I was like oh it's me all the gold medal is better than becoming very fast man and there is Usain back on the practice track hard to miss him he's six foot five just one inch shorter than me and I'm six six and you know Tom I was Trackside there in New York when he broke that world record there was already one false start on the field then bolt rumbles down the track into history and I believe he comes to Beijing with the confidence of being the world's fastest man let's just remember he's only 21 now but in age 15 He Set the World Junior record in the 200 so he has pedigree as a great Sprinter but can he manage the pressure can he deliver the gold for Jamaica that's the pressure he's under now you mentioned pressure we've forgotten about another man asafa pal the former world record holder his presence means we have the three fastest men of all time and for asafa Powell the pressure is off and Tom of the three of them the only one that's been here before is of course asafa power who was only fifth in Athens he's had a label lately of being able to deliver when it counts and Jamaica has put a lot of pressure on both him and asafa Powell and Usain Bolt because they expect them to be one two and possibly break the world record all right competition begins in the men's hundred and Usain Bolt will be in the first opening round Heat so here is the first heat in the men's hundred meters the opening round of four with the top three from each heat plus the 10 fastest times over the Heats to advance to the quarter-final round and Usain Bolt is the first of the favorites to be on the track the world record holder at 9.72 towering over the field at six foot five and has been begging his coach Glenn Mills for a long time to try the hundred and wow he was right Tom scarier than 9.72 is the fact that a lot of people myself included think that his best event may eventually be 400 meters he's already said the hundreds fine he's really looking forward to the 200 but he is doing the double and we'll see him here out of Lane three all the great sprinters Jamaica has had over the years they've never had an Olympic champion in the hundred thank you bolt runs in Lane three with Lane One open and all these opening Heats in the 100 meters already one false start charged to the field foreign start Usain Bolt did not get away that well but now is coming on and easily strides to the front so Usain Bolt easing up crosses the Finish Line to move on to the next round in the 100 meters so the favorite didn't get out of the blocks exceedingly fast but uh in a couple of strides was in front and Tom I was actually a little bit surprised that he started this poorly but I think because there was a false start Usain Bolt knew I have to be very very patient didn't want any accidents with a false start he really was the last out of the blocks but when you have 9.72 speed you have a lot of work you have a lot of uh reserve and we see him seize control at the middle of the race and just jog in a very very easy 10.20 for Usain Bolt I would expect that he would have started a little bit better and I'm sure his coach Glenn Mills told him to begin to work on his start but with that false start not wanting to take any chances and a very very easy 10 20 for both boat leading the automatic qualifiers from that heat joined by Daniel Bailey from Antigua and Barbuda and by the Brazilian national champion Vicente De Lima and now here's Bolt's country I'm an assafa pal the four quarterfinal round continues in the men's 100 meter dash and this heat including the race favorites Usain Bolt of Jamaica the world record holder and just a few moments ago an odd thing as he was jogging out of the blocks in his warm-up watch this [Music] can you make anything of that on him you know he's got to pick those feet up he's got some really nice looking shoes on there but he's got to pick those feet up and sometimes though that happens to the best of us sometimes you're just out there and you know taking in the crowd and getting ready for what you have to do and you forget the most important rule of sprinting get those feet up well he didn't get his feet out of the blocks very quickly this morning he sort of just walked out of those starting blocks and yet was able to win his heat what did you make of his race in the opening round this morning well I was just absolutely amazed this morning at Usain Bolt in this first round he did have a false start so of course the entire field was on the caution and he spotted everybody about a meter and said okay now I'm gonna run to control of the race at about 60. and now you see him start to look around comfortably qualifying in first place [Music] so both back for the quarterfinal round now tonight I wouldn't advise him to spot these guys and meter that's a different round now and uh 972 or not these guys are going to be running a lot faster than they were this morning well also in the seat Francis obiquelu of Portugal the silver medalist in Athens that time I saw this guy at the Olympic Village and he says since when Otto speed five for a sprinter a big deal four and three quarters of an inch what's the big deal so the silver medalist from Athens uh we have the the tallest race here with these two guys six four and three fourths and six five and of course that makes six foot doc Patton of the United States look a little puny standing next to obuilu and on Down the Line lightning bolt doc Pat has run like one of the big guns making the U.S team in the 100 really a 200 meter specialist before that stage chance now to get to the semi-final to work on his start start the setup the start he wants to get in the final right now sir and a false start it was obina made two of Nigeria out of the blocks early and I saw something very interesting right there from both he's actually cocking his head which is not what you want to do third from the left you see Bolton the yellow and green of Jamaica and he's bringing his head up right at that start command called back into the blocks now after the fall start Usain Bolt folding himself into the starting blocks underneath the stadium that's asafa Powell his countrymen the former world record holder who is trying to be nonchalant but I suspect keeping an eye on things on the track that's the thing you want that balance of I have to focus on my race but I want to see what the competition is doing as well that Fair start bolt started better than he did this morning Usain Bolt Ober quailu Patton here's bolt just freezing to the front Patton was second and oh wailu third and Tom let me apologize on behalf of everyone who has never broken 10 in their life I have never seen 9.92 look that easy did he stop running at about 40 Lewis it was unbelievable he's looking over left and right at about 40 to 50 meters which I've never seen and he didn't get a great start a good start by his standard second from the left of the yellow and green of Jamaica and he has such power in his stride that at 50 meters he is looking left he's looking right 9.92 just amazing I think one thing is clear that no matter what happens in the semi-final in the final it'll have nothing to do with ability it'll all be about the mentality of this guy because his physical abilities are unbelievable well he'll look to Bob newmeyer now as he comes off the track you're saying we noticed you were watching Tyson Gay's heat what were your impressions oh it's good uh it doesn't really look like himself but I'm open he's going to run himself uh you're 21 in the world record holder what are your own expectations well I'm not looking for just coming here and copy to my best send us do my best my best good enough for me and I was happy myself [Applause] well it seems crazy to say an easy 992 but that was it for Usain Bolt it looked like the easiest 992 you can imagine doc Patton also moves ahead to the semi-final round over Quail as well and now sopha Powell takes his turn on the track when we come back NBC's aerial coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games provided by Goodyear the tire company with a track record of innovation Goodyear get [Music] trespass the halfway mark in the Olympic women's Mara swims in two finals we also have the race to determine the world's fastest man the semi-finals and the final of the 100 meter dash took place at the bird's nest last night in Beijing and here's how Tom Hammond who is everywhere along with Otto Bolden and Lewis Johnson called semi-final number one on the track the semi-final round of the men's 100 meter dash with the top four from each of the semifinals advancing to the final later tonight and in the first eat dancing with the music in his head Loose as can be 21 year old Usain lightning bolt world record holder who after his quarterfinal he's had people just shaking their head an amazing Tom I've never seen someone run that fast that easily he looked phenomenal last night but today's a new day if he's feeling the pressure he's not showing it he looks so relaxed back in the car room just 21 years of age the pride of trelawny Jamaica and his uh mother his mom Jennifer is on hand too see you same race [Music] that's next to Usain Bolt in fact about almost a foot shorter is Walter Dix the Florida state five-time NCAA champion and Tom Bolton 6'5 Walter Dix is 5-7 look at the differential in the height there is that not obvious or what here's another guy who's young first time on the big stage is 22. and when I talked with his coach Terry long I said you know how do you think dick is going to handle the pressure he said well the first step he handled pretty well with the Olympic trials he wasn't shaken as he made the team in the 100 and the 200 before this is a different deal here you're standing next to the world record holder you're standing at an opportunity to make the final and waiting his turn on the track probably with an eye toward this one asafa Powell and Tyson Gay here are the lane assignments in this first semifinal top four to the final tonight Walter Dix is in Lane six Usain Bolt Lane seven and Tom make no mistake about it this is the easier of the two semi-finals because the one to follow would be the one that I would not want to be in that's going to be a burning no sir and it's a fair start and Usain Bolt is there also Mark Burns Derek Atkins but here they come with both taking command sprinting to the front Knicks post with Burns for second and third 9.85 the Olympic record is 9.84 set on probably the fastest track ever and he just jogs 9.85 and it's and there's a slight headwind I am just over the moon as to this young man's potential just an average start for boat but remember he's six feet five inches tall Mark Burns to his left property got the best start from Trinidad and Tobago but look he's already looking around there's nobody next to him this is going to be one heck of a final bolt is in Supreme form this is where the line forms for the Olympic gold medal the relaxation that this young man is displaying at 21 years of age this is his first year running this event and words cannot describe how easy he made that look you have to understand you guys I have a little bit of pain watching this my personal best in my whole life was 9.86 so he basically basically just dropped my personal best and made it look easy well he sent a message to Tyson Gay and the others with that performance just as he did in his quarterfinal Race So Tyson Gay knows he must not only contend with the world record holder who's looked so great but hoping that injured hamstring will hold up Usain Bolt 985 Walter Dix of the United States will be in the final Mark Burns third and Michael freighter the other Jamaican in the final strayota's National clearance event tonight's gold medal Spotlight brought to you by Chevy [Music] and the sold out bird's nest heavy with anticipation as we're ready to choose the world's fastest man and apparently it's come down to two Jamaicans asafa pal former world record holder and his countrymen the younger Usain Bolt the current world record holder they're the two fastest men ever they've raced twice before and to this point the matchup has been a split decision tonight all of Jamaica waits to see who'll come out on top in that decisive third round and if one of their own can finally claim Olympic gold at 100 meters foreign [Music] Caribbean island the famously relaxed pace of Life lies in contrast with the beautiful swiftness of its athletes it's a place where speed runs in the family where children learn to compete in bare feet on grass tracks it's home to a man who used to be the world's fastest the sprinters are the ones that are really doing the best here in Jamaica so they're more recognized we're doing so well you know we're doing great things for the country when a sofa pal wakes at his home atop Long Mountain he descends toward Jamaica's capital city of Kingston and drives past the home of the man who took his world record that's just the way it goes here you go to bed the world's fastest man and wake up hitting some kid who lives down the street a young man they call lightning Usain Bolt is a 21 year old freak of physics and physique a monstrously long specimen who explodes from the blocks and gallops to the finish line he broke Powell's 100 meter world record in just his second race at that distance I told my coach if I got a perfect race I can break this where I can say don't worry about it so uncomfort's gonna come let's go there and do your best and then surround and stay focused I did just that well it was a great feeling though definitely now the 10 fastest 100 of them have been run by asafa pal or Usain Bolt the two have raced head-to-head only once before matchup transformed the Jamaican Olympic trials into the nation's sporting event of the year in the hotly anticipated final Powell LED early before easing up allowing bolt to jog to victory in a time that would have won Olympic gold four years ago I can beat everybody all season if I don't do it the Olympic fence it's like it doesn't really count she become a good Champion somebody's got away four more years to beat you everyone wants to be the winner everyone wants to be number one but when you're out on the truck where competitors you know maybe you know see each other on the street or go somewhere and have a drink but on the track we're really at War at these games a proven champion and national hero will be challenged by his neighbor the emerging phenom the 100 meter final could go down as the fastest foot race of all time and nowhere are expectations higher than in Jamaica where life for the world's fastest people will stand still for just over nine seconds [Music] good so with Tyson Gay hampered by that injury unable to make the final it appears at least on paper to come down to the two Jamaicans and auto Boulder you're the only one of us that's been in this situation under the stadium awaiting the call to the track for the 100 meter final what's going through their mind well I think Tom for asafa Powell he has to overcome what happened to him in Athens he started as favorite in Athens and only ended up Fifth and for bolt he's never been at this level before he's never been in a 100 meter Olympic final but he knows he is the world record holder and Jamaica is counting on him to deliver and up for grabs the title of world's fastest man tonight's gold medal Spotlight has been brought to you by Chevy an American Revolution it's time now for the Chevy gold medal Spotlight event it's the men's 100 meter final [Music] and the runners on the track now taking off their warm-ups in preparation for this power packed 100 meter final Usain bolts the world record 972 Donovan Bailey the Olympic record 984 both those marks could be in Jeopardy tonight and Tim I think it's almost certain that the Olympic record goes everything in my head tells me that the world record does not fall in the hundred meter final in the Olympics but history has not seen the likes of Usain Bolt before he could not have looked better in the quarterfinal or the semi-final race a huge favorite but this is the test of nerves and a lot can look different in the fam in the final his mother seems to be very loose there she is right there doing a victory dance already Jennifer if my son looked that good in the semi-final 9.85 shutting it down very relaxed I think I'd probably be confident too don't forget about a sofa Powell with that fast start and he is one win and one loss head to head against Usain Bolt and Tom I think this guy has the physical ability to really put pressure on both he can win the whole thing make no mistake about it but right around this time when you come out here 91 000 people in the stands you know billions are watching at home now is when he starts to think about Athens a little bit and about the collapse that he had there he started his favorite there was only fifth if he can overcome some of the mistakes that he's made in the past four years after 60 liters he too has a chance to be Olympic champion here tonight and Walter Dix in his first Olympics has made the final Walter Dix has proved himself to be tough not only physically but mentally making the U.S Olympic team in the hundred and the two and he's shown himself you know really to be able to manage the pressure of what's Happening Here but now is the big moment for this young 22 year old so here's the lineup in lane two lane one will be open lane two Michael freighter from Jamaica the three-time All-American at TCU silver medalist at the world championships 2005. leadership and in Lane three his former TCU teammate doc Patton of the United States fourth in his semi-final edging out Tyson Gay for the final spot here and Usain lightning both the precocious youngster 21 years old all but begged his coach to let him run on the 100 in addition to the 200 and the result well he may be the one to rewrite all the records if he's feeling a lot of pressure he's not showing it he has been so relaxed throughout these rounds Lane five is Richard Thompson from Trinidad and Tobago third in his semi-final equaling his personal best number one Collegiate spreader in the United States this year for LSU I spoke to him last night he is ready he feels like this is his time it's a new generation he's one of the youngest men in this field the NCAA champion from LSU Lane six is Walter Dix who resisted the temptation to turn pro before he got his degree from Florida State and has since signed a lucrative contract after the U.S Olympic trials nobody is in the final no matter where he's seated Tom he always seems to run above where he's expected to finish Lane seven pound of Jamaica the son of two ministers back home sometimes plays the guitar at the Sunday Services a national hero in Jamaica he wants to prove to the world that he can win the big one and Tom this is the only person back from the 2004 Final in Athens but he brings that baggage but as I said before so talented I think even with all the hype about bolts still has tools to be the best ever Inland 8 is Mark Burns Trinidad and tobaga three-time National Champion there and a former Auburn All-American good sign for him he started extremely well in the semi-final he's one of the best closers and he can start the way he started in the semi-final he gives himself a very good chance to win the whole thing in Lane nine shirandi Martina Netherlands Antilles All-American at Texas El Paso fifth in the hundred meters at the world championships in Japan last year round again to shake just at the right time 999 and then 9.94 in the semi-final [Music] is on six foot five Usain Bolt at Tom there is nothing that sprinters love more than for the whole world to be as it is right now stopped watching focus on these eight Lanes in Beijing because when you travel the world after people remember you by how you did in the Olympic final and what about the gamesmanship the bolt showing just how loose he is seemingly unconcerned and that is to play to the psyche of the gentleman around him in particular asafa Powell because bolt knows the one guy in this race that can really Rain on My Parade is this gentleman right here asafa Powell because he has such a great start and you know it was a soccer pal who told us just days ago that the one with the level head will win this Olympic title and so that's the question can he keep his head level I can tell you right now bolt certainly looks more comfortable in this situation so much pressure all of Jamaica looking at this race it might take a world record to win the gold [Applause] all right [Applause] reps and a fair start asafa Powell Usain Bolt is also out well here they come down the track Usain Bolt Bulls daylight and setting a world record 9.68 the wind is okay new world record how easy was that Tom Hammond the hundred meters is running a straight line but Usain Bolt just turned the corner and the line starts behind him it no longer is good enough to be something they have now gone into the realm of video game times 9.69 for Usain Bolt and he made it look I have never seen another 100 meter Olympic champion run that easy he dominated this field this has never been seen before in Olympic history ever remember he begged his coach to let him run the hundred we have to remember Tom this is his first year running the 100 meter dash and team bolt his mother and family celebrating in The Stance what would he have run Tom and Lewis if he had run through the tape he's running I couldn't believe the celebration with at least 20 meters to go hands up to the side celebrating what might the time have been with his mom Jennifer and his family over there the time adjusted officially to 9.69 world record time and asafa Powell finishing in fifth place as Richard Thompson took second and Walter Dix claimed third wow [Applause] pretty impressive performance by a couple of guys that were just recently Collegiate Tom this young man on your screen Walter Dix was only fourth at the NCAA championships and comes out here tonight as usual runs ahead and above what people thought he was going to finish and get a bronze medal and the silver medal to Richard Thompson from your country Trinidad and Tobago and you can't tell that he didn't win the gold because as the NCAA champ a lot of people thought he was over raced but he is celebrating as though he won the gold and hopefully to Trinidad and Tobago it is just as good as gold look at the Celebration by Richard Thompson and of course at the other end of the scale asafa Powell was failed to deliver once more at a big meet and we just need to think that at a year ago it was Tyson Gay and asafa Powell that were figuring that they would be matched up in the Olympic hundred meters Tyson Gay nursing the entry didn't make the final asafa pal winds up Fifth Tom that's why we watched and that's why the whole world stops there is so much entry Tyson and asafa nowhere on the metal Podium tonight as Bolt continues to celebrate I have no idea how Osaka power would pick himself up from this and continue looked like he was flying down the home stretch just as he was during the race Usain Bolt I really thought would be challenged from the gun by these sprinters Richard Thompson out of Lane five got the best start but once Usain Bolt gets to that top speed he was in a league of his own Richard Thompson hangs on for silver and Osaka power for the second straight Olympic final finishes in fifth look at both dirt from your right right here it's even but once his Superior top end speed comes out he leaves the rest of the world it's not even close he's able to celebrate 15 meters from the finish and still destroys his own world record of 9.72 okay here he is just gazing around already has raised his arms will pound his chest a couple of times no problem still a world record s it's just the performance by which every other Sprinter in the past and in the future will be measured look at him 15 meters out his hands are out he's decelerating pumping pounding his chest and still breaks the world record I think he possibly Tom and Lewis threw away a 9.59 and if you thought his celebration was exuberant check out his mum Jennifer [Applause] foreign nobody is safe from a hug strangers get involved get out of the way she's trying to get to her son who of course creates history for Jamaica their first ever hundred meter Olympic champion male or female [Music] glance but you see Tom and Lewis to the right he's looking for asafa Powell because he knows that's the one person that can challenge me and he looks he says asafa is not there no one's there I'm in the stratosphere no one's around and the celebration begins both in Beijing and in trelawny and Kingston Jamaica and here is the pose for that new world record time 9.69 Usain up to his nickname lightning in Beijing tonight we'll hear from him and from Walter Diggs when we come back to the birds nest [Applause] back at the bird's nest where Usain Bolt has thrilled the crowd indeed the whole world with a showman-like performance in the hundred meters setting a new world record and a hug for his mom and anybody else that's close enough look at some of the Chinese bands they're getting in on that Olympic moment Usain Bolt becomes the first Jamaican Olympic hundred meter Champion 9.69 world record performance Richard Thompson becomes only the third different individual medalist in the hundred at the Olympics for Trinidad and Tobago Otto boldum is one of them and Walter Dix recently of Florida State claims the bronze medal for the United States well 969 it's a world's record and Olympic gold medal your reaction well uh I'm not I'm not really worried about aware because I'm Olympic gold medal so I'm just happy right now what could you have run had you not eased up over the last 20 meters I'm not even worried about that really I'm just happy I won what about winning the first gold medal for your country you know that's brilliant I told him I'm coming here uh to come do this and that's what I did so I know the country must be going crazy right now so I'm just happy with myself your mama's here cheering you on what did she say to you what about the victory laps Etc that's where I stopped the first time I stopped so just happy with me and I'm just happy myself also I've only competed in 100 for less than a year how did you pull this off uh 400 back gun chain I would say I've been working hard over 400 so he helps helps and I had to speed up first so I'm just happy with it yeah relations enjoy the moment thank you [Applause] are you saying saying that the world record didn't matter it was winning the gold but he did set the world record and my question Otto is how fast could he have gone well Tom 27.1 miles an hour for Donovan Bailey in 1996 in the Olympic final was considered the record but I'm sure he hit somewhere in the 30 mile an hour range because right at about 82 meters he starts to shut it down he probably threw away 9.59 for 100 meters and what about the performance of young Walter Dix in his first Olympics Tom the Olympic hundred meter final is about a fight and Walter Dix is a fighter look to his outside no fight in asafa Powell he finishes fifth for the second consecutive hundred meter final in the Olympic Games and Bob newmeyer caught up with Walter Dix well a proud Walter Dix runs medalist tell us about this third place run Walter oh it was a great run um you say it ran great so to Richard it was a great race and it's a good competition I'm glad that I came in third you had a quiet confidence about you all week I asked you about the big names you said I'll just run my race oh that's all I could do is run my race those guys have been practically good for a long time you know I just hopped back into things but I came back and I ran strong and got a medal one comment about bolt 9.69 never seen anything like it not really never any nothing I get nothing against nothing like that but um the guy can run to say the least congratulations Walter with the understatement of the night yes Batman can run the bird's nest crackled with electricity as the men's hundred meter semifinals and final approached but in the semis the lingering hamstring injury finally proved to be too much for world champion Tyson Gay who failed to make it to the final that left the two Jamaicans world record holder Usain Bolt and former world record holder asafa Powell as the favorites but it was no contest the youngster bolt made it look easy exploding in the final meters to break his own world record despite the premature celebration it was a stunning performance sure to go down in Olympic lore Usain Bolt at Jamaica truly the world's fastest man yeah Tom and keep in mind that Bolt's better event is supposed to be the 200. we'll see what he does in that race over the next few days speaking of World Records coming in a bit of a buzz of anticipation at the bird's nest as the men's first round of the 200 continues and the buzz because of Batman Usain Bolt back on the track for the first time since he electrified the bird's nest and the world in the hundred meters [Applause] [Music] new world record how easy was that this has never been seen before in Olympic history ever [Applause] we'd say he's having a good time but that would be an understatement Usain Bolt and now he switches to guys his better event the 200 meters and I have all over my desk at the hotel the numbers for what he's gonna need at a for a shot at 19.32 Michael Johnson's world record which I myself thought would never be broken 10 12 on the turn and 9 20 to go home and I'm telling you guys he has a good shot at it but he cannot do the celebrating that he did in the hundred Usain Bolt I think with all rep with all respect to his competitors is really raced against the clock but he's got to successfully get through these rounds because the seven rounds that he's gonna have to run prior to that 200 meter final I think could dictate whether he gets that record or not well you can see the progression in the 2004 Olympics in Athens he was eliminated in the first round of the 200. by last year's World Championships in Osaka he's finished second took the silver behind Tyson Gay and begging his coach to run the hundred he did and Electrify the track world and here he is in the 200. [Applause] Usain Bolt in lane four both has been a star in his native Jamaica since he was 15 years old and won the World Junior Championships there in Kingston he is legendary in Jamaica and of course that 9.69 solidifying that legendary status at age 21. so Usain Bolt blasts out of the blocks and immediately makes up the Stagger and running the curve into the home straight away and taking it pretty easy just wanting to qualify and still recovering from his hundred effort he'll just look around and cross the finish line actually in second place to move ahead behind uh Cirillo of Trinidad and Tobago it appears and Otto he has such a beautiful stride a beautiful Long loping Gate and he comes off at this third I've seen people warm up faster than this he looks maybe at about 30 percent effort guys just absolute control content to just qualify safely I've seen Tyson Gay look around at 100 I saw him actually shoot a glance here at about 80 meters so not quite off the turn but such is the dominance of this young Sprinter from Jamaica bull jocks his way to a second place finish and a qualification to the quarterfinals tonight and here are the key qualifiers including all three Americans Crawford Dix and Wallace Spearman Spearman a winner in his Heat to make it on to the quarterfinal round so Wallace Spearman will be there with Sean Crawford the defending Olympic champion and with Walter Dix coming off his third place finish in the hundred meteors but all must contend with Usain Bolt's don't look Usain Bolt how great is it to be 21 and on top of the world Spearman caught him as they left the stadium together but everything for you saying both these days a thumbs up the bird's nest at night with the Olympic flame burning High and the Ling long Pagoda in the background and inside the sellout crowd in anticipation of seeing the hero of track and field so far in the quarterfinals of the men's 200 meters that of course would be Usain Bolt of Jamaica here in the quarterfinals the top three from each quarterfinal heat will advance automatically plus the next four fastest and there is Usain Bolt his victory in the hundred has made everyone rethink the Sprints his competitors call him a freak of nature six foot five with ungodly speed 21 he's established his greatness but still unburdened by expectations he covers 100 meters in just 41 steps three fewer strides than those left in his wake of the numbers add up to a world record the fastest man in history and a swift path to super stardom a lot of the game one has enjoyed himself more than Usain Bolt has here and some say his useful exuberance is compelling and some say it's bordering on poor sportsmanship how do our experts feel Auto well I thought that given what he did in the hundreds it was a little bit too much I'm all for celebrating Lord knows I celebrated when I won but run the race first and do everything else after you know Ottawa as I've experienced it live and then we look back on it I still stall him in a moment of pure joy I thought it was just pure joy I know he knew it about 60 meters that he was going to be Olympic champion and then with 15 meters to go stuck his hands out hit his chest once I just thought it was just letting out the excitement you know four years you wait for an opportunity to become Olympic champion it happened and I thought it was absolutely pure joy well it's wonderful to have fun certainly and we all want to see and we all have enjoyed seeing his Antics and his fun but during the race you don't want to mock your opponents that would be the only thing I would say and Tom I think the minute you turn around to look in your competitor's Direction in a race going in One Direction I think you're then grandstanding and trying to show up the rest of your competitors a little bit and even while experiment in the past has said to him hey guy you got to cut out the looking over the shoulder but he is a joy to watch and he's obviously enjoying himself by the way the defending Olympic champion Sean Crawford is in this heat he's in Lane seven with bolt in lane four there's Crawford your eye just naturally drawn to Usain Bolt at six foot five for the golden shoes flashing and here he is already making up the Stagger and Sean Crawford running pretty well too into the home straight away bold in command already looking around Sean Crawford is second Here Comes both just jogging seemingly so easy cross the finish line I don't know how he does it I truly do not know how he does it because he makes 200 meters seem like maybe about 150 155 he simply does not exert himself is he sweating he doesn't seem like he's sweating to me Sean Crawford is one of the best turn runners in the world Usain Bolt in the yellow and green of Jamaica dominates him off the turn and then starts to look to his right and then just shuts it down 20.29 and that's about as fast as he needs to run to be quite honest a dominant performance Sean Crawford also on the outside he's a veteran he shuts it down look at the contrast to Kim Collins next to him from Saint Kitts and Nevis and devinish on the right of your picture really struggling and they both qualify safely well if there's an olympic record for winning with seemingly no effort Usain Bolt has said that as well another easy victory for Usain Bolt he doesn't even appeared to have extended himself and his celebration continues it wasn't a sweat at all actually no one makes it look easier the star of these games thus far is halfway through to the 200 meter finals Usain Bolt sticking to business right by Bob newmeyer didn't stop to talk he wins in 20.29 as Sean Crawford and Ken Collins also move ahead to the semifinals foreign the men's 200 meter dash in the world of track and field still talking about the lightning bolt that hit the bird's nest last Saturday Usain Bolt's winning by daylight [Music] new world record how easy was that this has never been seen before [Applause] [Music] yeah and Usain Bolt now in a position to make some history to become the first double spread winner since Carl Lewis did it back in 1984. eight men have won both 100 and 200 at the Olympics so he's two races away this is his semi-final heat and Tom Michael Johnson the world record holder of course has gone on record as saying he doesn't think bull can get his record he's predicting 19.5 for him in the final should he get through this I'm not so sure my number is a lot closer to that world record in this heat with Usain Bolt in fact right next to him is Sean Crawford who is the reigning Olympic champion from the United States of course has a gold medal in Otto every now and then I asked some of you medalists where do you keep those things and Sean had this crazy story he said that when he was living in Raleigh he had a 90 gallon fish tank he found a little mini treasure chest and put it in the bottom he put his gold medal there the four by 100 meter silver medal on top of it then he stopped the tank with piranhas and slapped the sign on it that said fish at your own risk Sean now 30 years old and looking for back-to-back gold medals bolt sees all the flash bulbs flash as he is introduced to this crowd so Crawford is just inside him and two bolts outside is Wallace Spearman Jr former Arkansas Razorback who does have a career Edge nine to five over Usain Bolt this is history's fourth fastest 200 meter man at 19.65 bolt has left him that's the best way to put it because they competed neck and neck for so many years bolt has just gone into the stratosphere a lot of Spearman Jr having some injury issues recently but he says those are fine and we'll see how he goes in the semi-final here are the lanes Crawford five bolt six Spearman seven and make no mistake about it this is a difficult semi-final look at five six seven those are three men many think can be on that Olympic podium after the final said and done and we saw Lane nine is empty and if Wallace Spearman does not hit this turn he's going to leave himself in a in a situation where it may be too much to overcome oh there's the gun those big long strides of Usain Bolt already passing Wallace Spearman Crawford is also moving up as they come to the home straight away Usain Bolt has it but Crawford is right with him Crawford and bolt together Crawford still holding off bold whose spirits to ease up as Spearman with a spurt gets the third spot okay what a nice little duel we had there coming up the finishing straight away by two of the world's best 200 meter runners in both and Crawford a little bit of Mind Games going on there I think Crawford wanted to assert himself and so listen no one over here is afraid of the big bad bold Crawford actually leads off of the turn and puts the hammer down just a little bit bolt glances to his left just to see how much energy he's putting out and both of them know the top two get the preferred lanes and they're content just to stay right there onto the finals for bolt and Crawford both in the yellow and green Crawford on the right of your screen the best turn runners in the world look at Wallace Beamer just getting left to their outside he's leaving himself too much work Bolton Crawford sees control starts to look around look at Wallace Spearman having to run from behind and that weighs so much energy well in spearmint a little bit of gamesmanship and those two are great friends we saw them clowning around in the back and while the spearman's with Bob newmeyer what were you joking with Usain Bolt when am I not joking with both sister warm-up walking to the tunnel we went to go check in he came around the corner and scare me after death so it's a buddy he's been a friend of yours for a long time you've competed against him he had some good luck with him in the past what about now hey he has a share of wins I have my share of wins we'll see what happens in the finals good luck thank you bold Crawford Spearman and Collins in this semi-final will advance to the final and by the way Wallace Usain Bolt has scared a lot of Runners around here all three Americans make it to the final Usain Bolt though is the man to beat and here they are in that walk out to the track earlier still clowning around they need to get their own show they'll put on a show in the finals but gains of the 29th Olympiad on NBC are brought to you by the Home Depot proud sponsor of the 2008 U.S Olympic and paralympic teams by Subway restaurants Subway eat fresh and buy Coca-Cola sponsoring Unity at the Olympic Games for 80 years foreign bolt standing on the verge of History perhaps Tom I think all the elements are right tonight he's in the right lane no one's ever run anywhere close to the world record in an inside Lane he's in five that's a good Lane draw for him and this young man what he has to do tonight have an honest turn and then don't celebrate before he gets to the line I think he has a very good chance he's going to be up on world record Pace when he gets to 100 meters the question is is he going to get off of the gas and perhaps give a little bit of that time back 1932 was a serious record Michael Johnson has said he thinks 1950 I think he can go faster I would not be surprised if he breaks this world record but he's got to keep going all the way through the line in lane two Kim Collins from Saint Kitts and Nevis the world champion at 100 meters back in 2003. he's better at 100 but he does start well and could give him a little bit of a problem from lane two in Lane three Christian Malcolm of Great Britain the British champion he was 58 years ago and now he's back again in the final out of Lane three he's gonna have to hold on to Sean Crawford to his outside in lane four there is Sean Crawford the reigning Olympic champion now 30 years old he's in lane four and he has to think he's not going to get too many more chances to be in the Olympic final I think this guy is capable of mounting that Podium for sure tonight the question is can he give bolt competition coming off of that turn there is the man of the hour still clowning and he can climb before and he can clown after but during the race if this young man wants to go down in Olympic history and make himself a legend tonight he has got to keep the hammer down all the way through 200 meters bro here's his introduction when you have 9.69 speed you've got a lot to work with Lane six's Brian zingai representing Zimbabwe went to college at Florida State and he's been the surprise find of these 200 meter rounds I think he's been running well enough to really be in contention but he's going to have to set a personal best if he wants to get up there with the Medalist Lane seven is to Randy Martina from the Netherlands Antilles carried his country's flag in the opening ceremony he went to UTEP and after that fourth place finish in the hundred his confidence has got to be very high and he can be dangerous out there in Lane seven he's going to get off that turn quickly and he has nothing to lose in Lane eight is Walter Dix winner of the bronze medal at 100 meters went to Florida State just off the college circuit graduated this spring and he's such a gamer this is finals time this is when Walter Dix shows up doesn't matter what the rounds have looked like you better believe the three people will not beat him this evening and on the outside lane lane nine is Wallace Spearman Jr the former Razorback who does have a career Edge over his good friend Usain Bolt but not so much in the last couple of years well this guy used to dominate Usain Bolt but Usain Bolt has taken it to the next level he had has the best Lane draw possible I'm sure when he saw this Lane draw he thought this is a great Lane draw for me he hates the turn doesn't run the turn well well guess what he has the least amount of turn to run tonight Usain Bolt he's got 9.69 speed if he runs around 10 flat off of this turn 9.3 or better for that last hundred will get him home in world record time but he cannot deviate from the goal ahead keep your eye on the prize and he's got a shot here that there's the start and bolt with those big long strides off to a good start he's flying around the curve Walter Dix is there and spearman's hoping to kick it in and Crawford but Usain bolts in front and he's pulling away bold has the lead widening the margin all by himself across the line both 19 3-1 who says lightning doesn't strike the same place twice Usain Bolt struck in the hundred and now he's struck again world record Usain Bolt I knew that he had the speed to do it he just had to keep the hammer down and we wait for the official time and it's even better 19.30 and listen to this he did it into a minus 0.9 headwind this is the greatest performance perhaps that we have ever seen in a track and field event he broke Michael Johnson's world record and had a headwind in his face to do it what a performance by Usain Bolt thank you Martina was second Spearman got third [Applause] [Music] [Applause] imagine what he could have done Tom and Lewis at a hundred meters if he had kept going all the way all week I've been listening to people say that he could not approach this record but you have to understand a month before Michael Johnson ran 1932 in Atlanta he ran 1966 at the trials bolt ran 19.67 about a month ago so he was ready but the question was did he have the focus to do it he came off of the turn and at about 150 he started to grit and I said okay keep going and he did and his result is 19.30 the world record that I thought would be the record at 200 meters on the day I died is gone Lewis and Tom in 12 years he makes history becomes the first double Sprint Olympic winner since 1984. breaks the world record and you have to think it's just the beginning that's the scariest part of it all what will he do next Usain Bolt in Lane five made this look easy because he dominated the turn I knew he would be on the world record Pace at 100 my doubts were the second hundred look at the focus this is what was missing in the hundred he starts to grit his teeth he's pumping he knows he's 15 meters away from history and he runs all the way through the line a lead at the tape and he's got it 19.32 in history 19.30 is the new 200 meter world record what a turn by Usain Bolt I can't wait to get the numbers on this because he came off the turn miles ahead and then kept going and just think there are some people who still think his best event might be 400 meters in the hundred he was cloning around at this point on the track not tonight all the way through and he's got it Usain Bolt cements himself as the track and field star of these Olympic Games with his second world record in eight races how did Michael Johnson in the BBC Booth feel about you saying obliterating his record [Laughter] I don't know how he did that because I from doing the math Lewis and Tom I was like this guy is capable of running 969 clowning around you have to think he can run nine two or nine three for the second hundred remember Michael Johnson had the golden shoes in Atlanta when he had that historic double set the world record by winning the 200 and Usain Bolt matches his golden shoes and breaks his record here in Beijing [Applause] Bo just led the greatest 200 in history five men under 20 seconds all that and he get danced hey you know that dance he's doing right now goes along with the hottest new dance song in Jamaica no linga which an island speak means no lingering or no hanging around and there was no hanging around on this 200. I am number one I am number one nobody can argue with that [Applause] and there's his good friend Wallace Spearman there's gold silver bronze but well they haven't put it up on the big board yet but our computer here our Olympic computer here says that Spearman has been disqualified now it hasn't gone up on the big board and he obviously doesn't know it but our computer says he's been disqualified let's see if we can pick out what happened and usually this means that someone has possibly stepped on the line let's look at Water Spearman in Lane nine on the outside he's okay here and now he starts to head towards the line and look right there he takes it up on the line and the rules in track and field are very clear one step on the inside Lane and you are disqualified this is coming off of the turn about 100 meters to go there's another step right there by Wallace Freeman on his inside Lane then another step right there so Wallace Spearman has been disqualified for running on the lane to his inside well he's been celebrating that bronze medal on a Victory lap with Usain Bolt it looks like someone just told him he said what now he's looking at the big board and now it is up on the big board and he sees that he has been disqualified from third place no bronze medal for Wallace Spearman that'll move Sean Crawford up guys I'm not sure Wallace Spearman is the only athlete in this race guilty of stepping on that inside Lane let's see if we can take a reverse look right around 50 meters into the race there's sarandi Martina in the red on the right and right there there's a step on the inside Lane by him and again the rules are clear one step on that lane on the inside and you're disqualified here's a hundred meters to go right there there's another step by Sir Randy Martina and then another right there so grounds to disqualify sharandi Martina from the Netherlands Antilles as well for running on the inside Lane So based on what we've seen to Randy Martina could be disqualified as well should a protest be filed he's in his Victory lap but a protest could be filed and he could be disqualified from that silver medal we do know that Spearman is out which means that Sean Crawford now being told about it as the American flag reached Usain Bolt he can take the Victory lap he has at least a bronze meanwhile spearman's with Bob newmeyer Wallace here running around the stadium with the American flag thinking of the bronze medalists only to be disqualified when did you find out right now was he fixes Lane I didn't know that I guess so what's the emotion there is none right now we'll see protest of course I wouldn't you think you were okay in the race I didn't know so we'll find out [Music] so we'll have to see if a protest is filed meanwhile there is no question about this Usain Bolt world record 19.30 so here are the results on the day before his 22nd birthday Usain Bolt 1930 a world record is second gold medal Martina at least for now the silver Sean Crawford moves up to third with a disqualification of Wallace Spearman and he takes the bronze medal and bolts with Bob newmeyer we're the gold medalists did you come out tonight to break Michael Johnson's world record uh when I after I finish the one is Emirates out of saying I can get this but after doing two rounds I was like huh I'm not so sure no more but I told myself I'm gonna come out here I told my my roommate I told everybody that I'm gonna come out here I'm gonna leave everything on track I'm gonna go out there and let's give it everything I got left so I just did that people thought this record would never be broken did you believe it could nah I'll tell you over the years I've been saying uh this is not possible that's far but I came out I came out this season when I changed 100 I was feeling good I've been doing well so I'm not proud of myself Shane you make it look so easy and you're clowning around you're joking around do you feel an ounce of anxiety or tension before these races well yeah you do but I just trying to enjoy myself I just do I just really enjoy myself that's all pretty much congratulations all right thanks serious moment from Usain Bolt meanwhile USA Track and Field has indeed found a protest of the disqualification of Spearman the jury of appeals is examining the video now the women's 400 . we're back at the bird's nest for the opening heat in the men's 4x100 relay top three from each heat the next two fastest will advance to the final and out on the track the U.S team will be in this very first heat with Tyson Gay set to run the anchor leg and Tyson gave finally on the track Otto you know got to be feel good to be back out here after the big disappointment in the hundred we have not seen him since the 100 meter semi-finals I'm not sure if he's up to 100 and we I'm not sure if he's gonna be the anchor in the finals but he certainly is good enough to get the U.S through at this stage of this competition of course the United States has won 15 of the 21 gold medals awarded in this event except 2004 they were disappointed Maurice Green the anchor getting the Baton but they can't overhaul the Brits Great Britain wins the goal of the U.S settles for the silver medal one of the few times the U.S has not been able to win the 4 by 100 Olympic relay oh let's go I'm doing so here's the U.S lineup now as gay will run the anchor leg leading off will be Rodney Martin and Martin ran in Osaka collected a silver medal there with the United States team Travis pageant runs the second leg there's Travis fourth in the hundred at the U.S trials third leg is Doc Patton and then Tyson Gay will run the anchor and is this a gamble by the U.S to put Tyson Gay out there I think the only reason you see Tyson Gay here is that the U.S coaches are a hundred percent confident that he can carry this baton for 100 meters even under stress because this is not an easy semi-final the U.S is in Lane seven here and next door Lane eight is Trinidad and Tobago Otto's home country and they will have as their anchor the very capable Richard Thompson who took the silver medal in the 100 meters here earlier 9.89 he ran in that final and Trinidad and Tobago coming in with the second fastest time in the world but their first leg you see there keston bledman is a replacement That was supposed to be Daryl Brown the 2 300 meter silver medalist leg but he was injured in those 100 meter rounds so Trinidad a little weekend on first leg they'll be expecting much from Aaron Armstrong and this guy right here keston bledman very young but has shown a lot of promise [Applause] follow your Roblox Tyson waiting his turn he's running the anchor for the United States remember he did not qualify for the final in the hundred the world champion and many questions about his Fitness and his hamstring he wouldn't give it as an excuse but most everyone agreed he was not right and you have to think with the kind of games that Usain Bolt has had what is Tyson Gay going through mentally these days because he has seen what seemed to be a clear road to 100 and 200 meter gold here totally changed and now here he is anchoring the U.S in the 4x1 and there's the gun they're on their way the U.S Rodney Martin running lead off here comes the exchange to Travis pageant and Trinidad Tobago having a little difficulty they have great pass for the U.S look at Travis Padgett down that back stretch for the USA making up Ronald Trinidad and it's a big already and Doc Patton will run the curve for the United States U.S on top Tyson Gay awaits the Baton he'll run the anchor leg here's the Baton exchange and Tyson Gay hadn't didn't get it and the USA is out the stick has been dropped Trinidad takes the lead Trinidad and Tobago will win it Japan in second U.S is out of the relay the Baton exchange between doc Patton and Tyson Gay did not happen and the U.S is disqualified and we've seen this in so many years when the U.S starts a four by 100 meter final 50 out of the 21 times in the Olympics they win but they have always had issues and part of the problem is you have so much Personnel sometimes they don't get a chance to practice together so you can have the fastest sprinters in the world but if you can't get that baton that is only 12 inches long and an ounce and three quarters exchanged in the zone you're out and we see right here Tyson Gay puts his hand back I have no idea why this stick is not passed and the next thing you know it's on the ground the race has already passed them by doc Patton had to jam on the brakes to get the stick to Tyson this is shades of Osaka last year and he simply did not make the pass happen and this is the fourth of Darvis Pat you have to put the stick in the outgoing runner's hand before anything can happen Nigeria also dropped the stick so it's tough enough to get the stick around with these young men going at these incredible Paces but in addition the rain out here not making things any easier and disaster for the United States Trinidad takes control of the race because they were behind but doc Patton here in the USA blue having to jam on the brakes and not a steady path and he lets the stick go before it's in Tyson Gay's hand that is the Cardinal rules of relay running well Tyson gave 2008 began with such bright prospects for him maybe the double world champion would have Olympic gold in 100 and 200 and marapps are relay maybe three gold medals in Beijing and he will leave empty-handed he's with Bob newmeyer I like Tyson exactly what happened in that uh would-be pass from Doc Patton and I have no idea he said it was in my hand and it slipped but I can't really remember much man it just hasn't really been a good Olympics for me or the U.S period is this something that you've practiced have the coaches emphasized the passing of the Baton because this seems to creep up Olympics after Olympics yeah we practice digs you know a couple days ago there was on point really sharp but for some reason it just didn't come together you know Tyson does this kind of symbolize the year for you I mean when you came in as the world champion 100 200 4x100 out here yum they're funny you know all the metal that I got last year I didn't get none this year you know so it's kind of difficult to go home with you know no Hardware but you know I'm gonna suck it up and chill on the rest of my teammates it's part of the disappointment knowing that you had a chance if healthy to run in the final and maybe make amends from stuff that happened earlier to you yes um it's very difficult to know look at that especially Usain Bolt as great as he was running you know my head goes off to him you know breaking world records and I wasn't you know a part of that you know I'm a little upset thanks a lot tough time for Tyson Gay in the U.S team as Trinidad and Tobago wins it 38.26 Japan and the Netherlands also move ahead [Applause] in the United States dropping the stick and here's what happened the exchange from Doc Patton to Tyson Gay stick drops to the ground and the U.S is out a lot of problems for these relay teams but dejection for gay and Captain USA out of the relay Coca-Cola is proud to celebrate [Applause] back at the bird's nest in the opening round of the men's four by 100 meter relay and everyone will be looking with anticipation to the Jamaican team which will be anchored by asafa Powell how powerful this country has been in the Sprints and so you'd have to expect their relay team would be Top Notch too you saw the lineup Thomas freighter Carter and asafa Powell and Tom after having watched the USA drop the stick if I'm the coach I'm trying to get a message to my four guys be conservative with the passes because there's no sense in trying to stretch the zones and then having a drop like the United States and taking yourself out of what looks now for Jamaica like a clear path to the gold medal the reigning Olympic Champions are in this heat That's Great Britain Craig Pickering will anchor the British team Williamson Edgar devinish and Pickering and this Great Britain team defending Champions but this is not the same Personnel that won in 2004. this is a brand new team and what you're seeing is the new breed of British sprinters anchored by Craig Pickering young and up and coming British Sprinter and he will be counted on to deliver for the Brits only Marlon demonish who runs the third round was on that gold medal winning team in Athens Great Britain in Lane five Jamaica in six there's a look at the Jamaican leadoff Runner Dwight Thomas and under the stadium the man we expect to see in the final yeah that confirms it see you guys tomorrow Usain Bolt will run the anchor leg for Jamaica tomorrow and Tom you have to know that these Jamaican men have to be under some pressure because they want to deliver for Usain both his third gold medal and they know if they don't get to stick around they eliminate that chance for him and it's all about moving that stick through the Zone The Exchange zones are 20 meters long and it's the Baton that has to be exchanged in the zone for it to be a legal pass [Applause] foreign so into the blocks the first three in each heat the next two fastest advance to the final make no mistake about it Jamaica has had issues in the past with getting that stick around they probably should have had the measure of the United States last year in Osaka but some bad handoffs from third to asafa Powell on the anchor probably put them out of gold medal contention safely around to give Usain Bolt a chance tomorrow for three gold medals oh and this is a Fair start so they're on their way Dwight Thomas for Jamaica Simeon Williamson for Great Britain here's Connex James first exchange good for Jamaica and an awful pass by Jamaica they're a little bit in the hole but Michael Freda not trying to make up some ground down the back stretch and he is making it up despite the rough exchange there's a successful pass to nestic Carter in Jamaica now they'll go to a sofa power Great Britain is also in there as Pickering runs the anchor leg and look at a sofa pal just looked to the lead right by Pickering asafa Powell Jamaica wins it Great Britain in second and now we will see Usain Bolt in the four by 100 meter final they'll slide Dwight Thomas out move straighter to first and I expect to see both on that second leg Jamaica did not have the best of passes here's first to second look at Dwight Thomas run all up the back of freighter that is not how you're supposed to pass the stick but they do get it off and freighter heads off down the back stretch this is second to Third and this is a little better but look at all the confusion for freighter does get it over to Nesta Carter and then third to Anchor was probably the best exchange for the Jamaicans a good call asafa gets the stick safely and then kind of cruises out of the Zone because he knows that he and the Jamaican team are into the four by 100 meter finals so asafa pound is brazing to victory for the Jamaicans in Great Britain passing to their anchor Pickering close to being out of the zone and maybe out of the Zone on their pass they're looking at the replay as we speak [Music] let's take a look at Great Britain definition Pickering and the stick has to be passed before that line right there and it is not and right there the Brits are out and they will not see the four by 100 meter Olympic fight and they are the defending Champions if that stick is not passed before the second yellow line right there they are out and there will be a new Olympic champion for the four by 100 meters for men so even without Usain Bolt Jamaica looks good winning in 38-31 Canada Jeremy and China to join them in the finals Great Britain and Italy are out so the finals are set and the man's four by 100 meter relay headed by Jamaica but get this the Athens medalists Great Britain gold United States silver Nigeria bronze none of them Advanced to the final and Tom the number one rule of the incoming Runner do not let go of the stick right there until the outgoing runner's hand is closed on it Darvis Patton did not and the USA is out so the Americans throw away any chance of a medal in the four by one cube in just a bit but right now we'll put the focus once more on Usain Bolt who set a world record in the 100 meters last Saturday as you know then another in the 200 on Wednesday he went for the trifecta and the Sprint Relay last night and with the call Tom Hammond and there is Usain Bolt still clowning around he's the lightning bolt that has electrified these games [Music] all eyes on six foot five Usain Bolt standing on the verge of History [Music] how easy was that with his second world record Usain folks immense himself as the track and field star of these Olympic Games [Music] Amazon [Music] wellato we saw him there with two of the all-time greats Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis should we be mentioning Usain Bolt with those people Tom I don't think it's a stretch even at this early stage he's just turned 22 to be mentioning Usain both among the rest of the all-time greats what's missing from his resume so far is the longevity but the games he has had already so far 9.69 shutting down in the hundred meters and then that great world record 19.30 when you won two World Records in two races at the Olympic Games with billions of people watching you can be considered one of the greats already all he has to do now to really start to be mentioned above someone like Carl Lewis is to have the longevity because King Carl did it for a very long time well Usain will be on the track with the Jamaican team in the 4 by 100 meter relay tonight but it all began with the hundred meters and that was just an absolutely dazzling performance Usain Bolt third from the right front by by the race 60 meters he looked around there is no one there 9.69 new world record celebrating halfway down the track what would he have run had he run all the way through but then it was time for the 200 Michael Johnson's 19.32 stood as the greatest record in the Sprints and both came off to turn in 9.98 seconds and there was no celebrating this time he grits and he gets to the line and then puts a zip at the tape 19.30 and Michael Johnson's world record is gone there was no time to celebrate but there was a new 200 meter world record [Music] you might think Hussein would be the anchor but off his victory in the 200 he's going to run late three that's the period I do not envy the other third legs who have to match up against this young man because what he has been able to do here in Beijing has been nothing short of phenomenal and there are the Olympic and world records are they in Jeopardy we're with Usain Bolt on the track one never knows we'll find out tonight and here's the Jamaican lineup running the lead off leg is Nest to Carter and at 998 he's used to running the third leg but they've asked him to run first he was on that third leg for Jamaica silver medal winning relay in Osaka last year background Michael freighter runs the second leg freighter probably better on the turn but using a little bit of strategy here and he will run the back stretch 997 sixth place in the hundred meter finals he will hand it to Usain Bolt and I ran the third leg at times I'm glad I'm up here and not running third leg down there because that is going to be a woo leg when he gets that stick man the Jamaican anchor will be the former world record holder asafa pal Tom after finishing that disappointing fifth in the hundredth final he was seen sitting on an athlete transportation bus by himself staring at his cell phone this guy the great Jamaican Talent has no Olympic medals does it get one here tonight Jamaica has been so strong in the Sprints men and women thinking back to the women's 4x100 it looks like the only thing that can beat them is themselves well the three things that could take you out as a relay team especially when you're this talented one pressure two in discipline we saw that with the Jamaican women Quran Stewart leaving early and three not being familiar now Jamaica has made some moves both usually runs second so these four have not passed in this order at this level for and that does raise some issues also the pressure is on them they know they start as favorites here through Jamaica and although the team from your home country Trinidad and Tobago highly regarded and especially their anchor Richard Thompson Richard Thompson was the silver medalist 9.89 the NCAA champion from LSU but he has been called upon to deliver because on that first leg Daryl Brown is absent because of an interest and the team from Brazil and when you think of seeing Russia just now winning that gold medal in a shot surprise over Jamaica Brazil is that kind of team if Trinidad and Jamaica falter Brazil will be ready and here are the late assignments with Brazil in three Trinidad and Tobago in four Jamaica in five the USA with nine of the fastest 11-4 by 100 meter Runners race has ever run absent from this final Jamaica Trinidad Brazil the favorites bolt awaits the Baton running leg three and there's the gun Nesta Carter runs the lead off for Jamaica and keston blemen from Trinidad Tobago trying to keep up but what a leg fighting that's the purpose Jamaica in the lead from the gun first baton exchange now Michael freighter and he's flying down the back stretch now Usain Bolt handoff to bold and he's on his way around the curve look at both go with those big long strides Jamaica the lead asafa Powell runs the anchor here's the handoff has him and he's way out in front Jamaica with another roll a stop of Powell in Jamaica with a devastating performance 37.10 a new world record when you put two of History's fastest men on the track that's what happens 37-40 has been there since 1992. it's one of the best records in track and field and the maple just took that record down by three tenths of a second they obliterate the men's four by 100 meter record what an Olympics for Jamaica world record for both times three now in the 100 the 200 and now in the four by one he has at one of the greatest Olympic performance ever Michael Phelps like before Usain Bolt three races three goals three world records and the scary thing is Jamaica did not have particularly good handoffs their hand off especially from third to Fourth both the Powell was not the best but when you have 9.69 and 9.74 to work with on Third and anchor you are able to do something that has never been seen before and how about a sofa pal disappointed the other night second time fifth in the Olympic Games in 100 meters not living up his to his potential and now he looks around the stadium as an Olympic gold medalist finally at Trinidad and Tobago gets their first medal ever in the four by one Richard Thompson able to haul in silver four Trinidad and 38.06 the second fastest time they've ever run the first time Trinidad and Tobago has ever won a medal in the four by one at Olympic levels and Japan took bronze thank you better the world record pose this is Nesta Carter coming into Michael freighter this was a decent pass you see the high hand and Michael Frader was off down the back stretch headed into Usain Bolt On Third that's full on his way the hand is back not the prettiest of fastest but he does get it off you see Freda stepping to the outside Lane and both did some damage on this certain Edge and now they were only really running against the clock asafa Powell awaiting the anchor you see him yell sick and he runs up a little bit on asapa pushes him through that zone hollering at him to get through the zone and once asafa Powell got it it was only Jamaica against the clock and that 37.40 by the United States had no chance Jamaica wipes away one of the best records in track and field bolt chased him all the way down Usain Bolt looking up yes the world record three races three World Records good night Usain Bolt you have to think where would the USA be at this point but when a soft Apollo got that stick there was nobody in the frame look at the focus and the determination on him he knows he's got a shot and yet another world record but this time in the men's four by 100 meter relay and you have to think that both and the rest of these Jamaican men wanted to do this for asafa asafa has become the Forgotten man in Jamaica with all the success of Usain Bolt pile anchors the world record as Jamaica goes in 37.10 Trinidad and Tobago and Japan collect their first ever Olympic medals in the four by one how to measure greatness it's always difficult and subject to debate for Usain Bolt three gold medals while breaking some of the Sport's most sacred world records in the storied history of Olympic track and field there have been many memorable moments but there has never been a more impressive performance Usain Bolt leaves an indelible image one will never forget can't disagree with any of that Tom the exhilarating and exuberant Usain Bolt with a week on the track that could not be bested and now this morning in Beijing comes word that the 22 year old who has taken some shots for showboating will donate 50 000 American dollars to the Red Cross earmarked for victims of the Sichuan earthquake earlier this year a spokesman for bolt told us Hussein has had a wonderful time in China and he just wanted to show
