2004 Iowa at Penn State Highlights

and here come the Nittany Lions less than one minute now to kick off as Penn State looking to win its first Big Ten game of the season Joe Paterno get ready once again to take on Iowa and welcome to State College on this Homecoming afternoon I was coming off a huge 33 to 7 win over Ohio State last week they are actually underdogs today against a Penn State team that is still looking for its first Big Ten win hello and welcome to Beaver Stadium Pam Ward along with Mike Tom Zach and if you're a Penn State fan you're absolutely thrilled the number twelve Michael Robinson's back in the lineup missed the last two games or the concussion he really should be first referred to as mr. Robinson Joe Paterno's ordained him as one of the best players in college football why he lined up a quarterback running back and receiver five touches per quarters or gold today in order for Penn State the effective number 12 has to have the football really their only big playmaker for Iowa what a story they lost their first four top tailback so you're down to this guy he's hiding behind the camera that Sam Brownlee is a sophomore he'll be hiding behind the offensive line afternoon the offensive line is going to make Brownlee go they're fierce they're competitive they're physical and they have the right mindset historically Iowa's offensive line it's been a test of time they always seem to put guys into the NFL let's go down to the third member of our team Dave Ryan Pam thank you it certainly has been a long week for Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz and his families six days ago his father John at age 84 passed on your Pittsburgh Pennsylvania after a long illness so after practice Tuesday and Iowa City Kirk Ferentz some of his family members headed to western Pennsylvania to help make arrangements for the funeral which took place yesterday he missed two days of practice and last night I asked him will that affect your game plan he said absolutely not I completely trust my players and my coaches to get ready as for son grandparents a starting guard Pam on this team Brian here's to all the practice on Thursday and fly he's preparing for today's game against Penn State that's gradual kicks that's a penalty I can't kick at the ball like that but he had the right thought good tackle by Anwar Phillips's Clinton Solomon catch and he's upset with himself because he realized he made his break before he got to the first down marker looks like Coach Farage is elected go for a field goal here I'll slicker in for the field goal attempt hit 7 of 9 sophomore kicker first-year kicking as he's replaced Nate Kaeding on the best kickers in Iowa history get the first trickery that time that's David Bradley the putter who acts as the holder and Bradley makes the big play first down Hawkeye's this is a check with me by the holder and a kicker so here comes again what we assume will be a few more attempt this time Penn State got shocked by that fake field goal that Iowa was successful on they only allowed three yards in three plays nice job by the defense responding to an adverse situation lining up for a field goal attempt to Iowa 27 yard attempt to super and Iowa has taken the lead so Iowa trying the fake field goal previously they held on the ball a little bit longer and ultimately came up with the three Kirk Ferentz his team has its first lead of the game terrific player while Rhino was talking to lie down look the offense is moving a couple Mills is it too short Kanchana with an injury and he rumbles all the way down to the 10-yard line softly or have it the tape goes down tackle down by a terrific defensive stand for Penn State first down from the difference I've had one punt locked already one snap go over the punters head for a safety it's been a disaster on punt game why not go for a free kick here we're only block one because again give up to give up points I just I just I just don't like to do it again because you get a field goal I was offense isn't doing anything anyway so you probably figured they're not gonna score again in this game we have to know the situation I think Kurt fares spent enough ballgames to make the right call on there and situational football these coach get paid big money big dollars for making decisions like that but not every decision these coaches make turns out to be the right one well at this point time is the right one because they're still leading six to four well now Penn State has the football you can't score a bit over football unless you can see the safety all right Michael Robinson he goes up top so we were thinking that we might see Anthony Morelli they come back out with Robinson and he throws to pick I justify my case I stand let's send it to the jury to put the mirrors in the fourth take three guys get the screen off Aaron nickens his fall back and is able to pick up a first as wiped out a lot better leaves it breaks away and nickens gets a huge first down for Iowa fourth and - they're not even going to try the field goal to try to maybe draw them off sides or get it first flag the wrong count by take both sides of jumping why would you do that fourth down I know coaches preach it it's up to the athlete to accept it that looks like defense all the way but we'll do it and again you know as we mentioned you're going in there you have to anticipate as a defense they're going to try too hard count you and draw you out sides and that's exactly what take dude well and great and Kirk Ferentz we see him emotional on the sidelines again as his dad passed away six days ago we went to the funeral yesterday in Pittsburgh and Brian Ference his son to white guard what an emotional week for the Barons family and the heart goes out to oh man what a great win now it might just be hitting him now the football game is over he got the win his dad had been ill for quite some time his mom is still alive they were married for over 60 years John Ference and Elsie Mae and there is a John who passed away and norm Parker the defensive coordinators of John Ference was a guy's guy just a regular old guy this is the same as true of Ference and for the fifth straight time Iowa has beaten Penn State Kirk Ferentz you know he's grown man it's okay for grown men to cry this is the emotional week for him his team knew that his team probably had a heavy heart as well they try to go out here to have a strong performance but it's a dogfight today for them so Iowa is going to go to 3 & 1 in the Big Ten and Penn State will drop to O and 4 stayed next week has to go to Columbus to play Ohio State Iowa goes to Illinois so Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes win with a couple of Kyle Schlicht field goals from 27 yards out in the first half Penn State settles for two safeties and Iowa wins it by the final of six to four I can say Penn State had no chance today Pam is back to the drawing board for this football team two times they were 1st and goal from inside the 10 and they came away with 0 points I was first win without scoring a touchdown since 1990 as AI wins it by the final of 6 to 4 they're not getting much productivity at the quarterback position there's an opportunity look at this thing long and hard alright let's go down to Dave Ryan Kirk I know you're a very emotional moment ago at the end of this game it's been a very difficult week for you how can you put it into words sir I really can't I just extremely proud of our team and uh it's just a great effort by everybody involved is this a heck of a game heck of a team win for us a couple guys up in having pretty happy today I promise you that sure our five turnovers and five straight wins now for Penn State over Penn State the defense today was that the biggest key for you well you know two years ago we're up down a field both teams up down the field scoring and uh yeah today was just a great defensive effort on both sides just a fantastic defensive effort you want to take that safety at the end with your punter he was at the right decision at the time yeah to me when you kick out from your own one that's automatic three for the other team there's no sense doing that we're playing great defense you got to go with what's hot and we just have great faith our players they got a lot of heart next day all right so Kirk Ferentz again he's a dad passing away last Sunday Brian Ferentz his son and his brother and his brother also is there coming up next college gameday now For anyone wondering for cliffs we were up 6-2 in the 4th quarter and intentionally took a safety to make it 6-4 apparently confident PSU couldn't even get a field goal. They didn't.

I was at this game and have never before been more frustrated watching a game than I was for this one. Robbie Gould missed like 3 chip shot FGs, any of which would've won the game, and then had the audacity to become the most accurate kicker in NFL history.
