star wars is undeniably one of the most wide-reaching entertaining empires in history enough so that just about everyone wants to get cast in a star wars movie one way or another i'm josh from whatculture.com and these are 20 actors you didn't know were in star wars number 20 justin through the last jedi the in first canto bite sequence in the last jedi is such a busy sensory assault that you would be forgiven for missing a fleeting cameo from justin through as the master chord breaker briefly spotted at one of the casinos gaming tables as an added bonus as well model and actress lily cole plays the companion on his right as much as the cameo was a dream come true for the actor he also stated that the part was originally supposed to be much bigger saying quote it was one of those things ryan called me a couple of years before making it and said hey there's this character blah blah blah and i think over the course of the making the character became reduced as they sort of locked in on what the overall thing was and what number 19 sofia koppler the phantom menace sofia coppola might be better known as a filmmaker these days but back in 1997 she was still primarily the daughter of filmmaker francis ford coppola and infamous for giving a razzy nominated performance in the godfather part 3. that didn't matter to george lucas though he was described as being like an uncle to the actress and while cobbler was originally only planning to tag along and watch lucas shoot the phantom menace the director ended up offering her a cameo role as one of queen amidala's handmaidens given that her face is largely concealed under ceremonial garments she is tough to spot which seems to be very much what coupler intended as she noted that quote it seemed like a good vantage point to watch without getting in the way number 18 joel edgerton attack of the clones and revenge of the sith years before he became a mainstream actor joel edgerton played a younger version of anakin skywalker's step brother owen lars who anakin crosses paths with in attack of the clones while seeking out his mother shmee he reappears in revenge of the sith as he and his partner end up taking custody of a young luke skywalker hilariously edgerton has spoken about how even this minor role opened doors for him saying quote star wars allowed me to bluff my way into any meeting i wanted i'm in star wars but i'm not telling you that i'm only in it for five minutes and i don't have a lightsaber number 17 kevin smith the force awakens and the rise of skywalker nerd supreme kevin smith managed to score himself cameo roles in both of the jj abrams directed star wars sequels in episode 7 he provides a voiceover for one of the first order stormtroopers on takadana who outside maz kanata's castle shouts we have incoming a 28.6 move but smith actually has an in the flesh cameo in episode 9 appearing as a kajimi inhabitant who poor dameron walks past during the mission to extract the sith text from c3po's memory sensibly though abrams kept smith's face concealed from view because nothing would break the immersion in a star wars movie quite like silent bob popping up out of nowhere number 16 dominic west the phantom menace a few years before he won the career defining role of detective jimmy mcnulty and hbo's dwyer dominic west made a brief cameo in the phantom menace west played a member of queen amidala's palace guard who anakin has seen asking to be granted access to amidala's chambers despite the inconsequential nature of the role west's character actually does have a name in star wars law that being jairus yannick number 15 daniel craig the force awakens the incredibly conspicuous daniel craig was obviously never going to get a front and center face bearing cameo role in a star wars movie but for the force awakens he was allowed to make a sneaky helmeted appearance as a first order stormtrooper and ingeniously craig isn't just some rando he's the stormtrooper who reflexes her jedi mind trick powers on convincing him to loosen her restraints unlock the door and then drop his weapon the only tell that this is actually double 07 himself is the fact that we hear craig's voice for a few lines as he calls rare scavenger scum and dutifully complies with her commands number 14 keisha castle hughes revenge of the sith years before she played obersand on game of thrones kishi castle hughes was best known for playing the lead in the 2002 film whale rider even earning herself a best actress oscar nomination and at the time being the youngest best actress nominee in academy history at just 13 years of age though the actress acted only sporadically in the years that followed she managed to snag herself a cameo role in revenge of the sith playing queen appalana of naboo appalana is padme's successor and briefly seen attending her funeral at the end of the movie castle hughes recorded her part in a single day seven of hours of which was spent in the makeup chair number 13. karl urban the rise of skywalker carl urban is another actor whose face is just too damn distinctive for a close-up cameo so jj abrams opted to conceal his mug underneath the stormtrooper's helmet in the rise of skywalker but like daniel craig he was given a small voice-over role and can be fleetingly seen and heard immediately after kylo ren fixes his mask and walks through the bowels of the ship with the knights of ren urban simply says knights of ren in an odd tone and yet despite the actor's notable kiwi twang the cameo largely went unnoticed until the summer after the movie was released when urban confirmed his part number 12 brian blessed the phantom menace if you ever need an actor to provide a bellowing voice there are few better than brian blessed whose presence you might have nevertheless missed in the phantom menace the larger-than-life actor voices boss nast the gungan leader who speaks briefly to qui-gon and obi-wan yet because blessed performs the role with a gungan accent and vocal pattern to match he sounds a little bit different to his typical booming velvety tenor number eleven joseph gordon-levitt the last jedi in the last jedi ryan johnson gave cameos to several actors he had worked with earlier in his career such as brick lead actor joseph gordon-levitt providing the voice for alien character slow in law slow and low appears briefly on cantor bite and his name is actually a reference to the beastie boys song slow and low you can kind of tell how they got from point a to b with that one gone leather was basically duty bound to appear in the film given that he's had some sort of cameo role in all of his pal johnson's films similarly showing up for a brief voiceover in johnson's most recent release knives out number 10 roseburn attack of the clones this is another cameo that's not at all hidden but so unexpected that you couldn't really be blamed for missing it especially if you haven't revisited attack of the clones much over the past decade a few years before she began to break into hollywood in earnest in films such as troye sunshine and 28 weeks later roseburn appeared in attack of the clones as domi padme's handmaiden because much of the film was shot in australia just about every jobbing aussie actor auditioned for a part in the film so it's a little surprised that a few of them went on to become name actors in their own right number nine jeff garland the rise of skywalker jeff garland will forever be known for playing larry david's manager and best pal jeff green on hbo's curb your enthusiasm but due to his friendship with jj abrams he was able to secure a small role in the rise of skywalker garland appears under heavy makeup as jungkook bint and while he more or less blends into the scenery of the film a still image makes garland's distinctive facial features that much more noticeable underneath the makeup garland apparently spent four hours in the makeup chair for this transformation presumably aided by the fact that only his face and hands are visible outside of his jumpsuit number eight clint howard solo star wars story in one of the most hilarious and unexpected cameos in star wars history beloved character actor clint howard made a brief appearance in solo a star wars story as rallichili the droid-hating degenerate who ran the droid fighting pits on vandal and was confronted by l337 the sheer presence of the b-movie veteran is of course easily explained given the fact that his older brother ron stepped in to finish directing solo after phil lord and christopher miller were dismissed from the project number seven sally hawkins the phantom menace years before sally hawkins became a two-time oscar nominee for her superb performances in blue jasmine and the shape of water she made her movie debut as an extra in the phantom menace hawkins who was still in drama school at the time and managed to snag a part in the film thanks to a friend played the role of a random uncredited villager as part of the crowd in the film's climactic celebration scene hawkins is admittedly imperceptible among the throngs of people and perhaps as a result later admitted that she's actually never watched the movie number six john ratzenberger the empire strikes back john ratzenberger is best known for playing cliff on the legendary sitcom cheers and also having had a voice role in almost every single pixar film to the point where he was dubbed the studio's good luck champ most prominently he voiced ham in the toy story franchise but back in 1979 the very year that pixar was founded coincidentally ratzenberger made a brief appearance in the empire strikes back playing as security chief of hoth's echo base sadly for the character's brief reappearance in return of the jedi he was recast with an unknown actor number five ben schwartz and bill hader the force awakens though you'd be forgiven for assuming that football ship droid bb-8's voice was simply generated artificially in a synthesizer it actually had a significant human influence with jj abrams bringing in two beloved comedy actors to figure things out parks and recreations ben schwartz and the great bill haider were employed as quote-unquote vocal consultants for baby it which amounted to recording voiceover for the droid which would then be transcoded into a droid voice for the final film number four richard armitage the phantom menace richard armitage is undoubtedly best known for portraying thorin orkinshield in peter jackson's hobbit trilogy but amitage's first movie role was many years earlier in the phantom menace where he played an unnamed naboo fighter pilot stood behind padme's decoy during one scene the character was later given the name tonra in the 2019 novel queen shadow though this link isn't strictly canon number three jessica henwick the force awakens jessica henwick may be best known for playing colleen weighing in netflix's marvel tv shows and portraying nemiria sand on game of thrones with the very same year she came to prominence she also appeared for a few moments in the force awakens henwick played resistance pilot jess tester paver yet despite the character surviving the climactic space battle and the actress expressing a desire to reprise her role in the rise of skywalker she sadly never did curiously hedwig spent many months auditioning to play rare but abrams liked her work enough to offer her a smaller role as a consolation prize number two lin-manuel miranda the rise of skywalker lin-manuel miranda needs no introduction having created and starred in the broadway musicals in the heights and hamilton the success of which eventually put him in touch with jj abrams miranda was drafted in to compose two of these songs heard in mass ganata's castle in the force awakens and seemingly as payback for this he was given a cameo role in the rise of skywalker miranda appears for a few seconds in the film's climactic celebration scene playing a resistance pilot who embraces a fellow pilot it's easy to spot if you're paying attention but at the same time he is in the middle of a crowded frame so you could also miss him as well number one john nguyen a new horp and we've definitely served the weirdest cameo for last because you probably never knew that john freaking when technically makes an appearance of sorts in a new hall while wynne didn't have any direct involvement with the production his voice was certainly included in the film during the scene where the moss icely spy guerinden informs the storm troopers where luke obi-wan and core are his voice is nothing but a garbled synthesized collection of indecipherable sounds well that's what we all thought except that sound editor ben bert later admitted that john wayne's own voice served as the basis for that sound saying quote we had that character that looked kind of like a mosquito from the first star wars that we found we needed a sound for and i was wondering back a few months ago how i did it and i discovered it was an electronic buzzing which had come off my synthesizer that was triggered by a human voice and i listened to it and i realized it was john wayne i had found some loop lines in the trash from the studio that hadn't been thrown away so the buzzing was triggered by some dialogue like alright what you doing in this town or something like that end caught so that's our list i want to know you guys think down in the comments below how many of these actors did you already know were in star wars and how many of these have taken you by surprise could you also give us a like share subscribe if you enjoyed this video and also head over to whatculture.com for more lists and news like this every single day i've
