edge going too early and edge guarding too late if i could pick two mistakes that a lot of people tend to make when they try to go off stage for a kill i'd definitely go with these why i would ever be put in a situation where i would get asked to choose two of all numbers edge guarding mistakes players make i have no idea but just so you know those are them that was then this is now i read that book in middle school it was pretty neat okay this is awkward moving on see edge guarding at the wrong time is problematic because it often results in people getting reverse edge guarded when they wanted the exact opposite outcome now trying to edge guard too early is when someone greedily tries to hit the opponent off stage when they have too many resources at their disposal and edge guarding too late is when a player attempts to hit the other person out of their recovery when it's too close to being over to work to demonstrate what both these scenarios look like i'll be getting help from my friends ness and luigi let's say they're playing a typical run-of-the-mill game exchanging hits back and forth and not doing anything out of the ordinary that is until ness gets sent off the level see before the match started luigi had this amazing simple plan for how he was going to edge guard nest to score an early kill and get a lead but because he did so at the wrong time it just didn't work out let's go over two of the most common reasons for why this would be the case edge guarding too early in this clip luigi didn't consider the fact that ness could use a large variety of moves offstage and merely assumed he would just upbeat thus luigi's vulnerable positioning gave ness an opening to get back to stage for free while sneaking in a little bit of damage if luigi wanted to go low like he did and actually land his edge guard he should have made sure that ness was forced to pk fender too to do this he would have had to steal his double jump and send him far enough away to where airdodge wouldn't reach the ledge people can find themselves edge guarding too early against any character not just ness for example someone might throw a little mac off stage gets super excited to him since anyone who knows a thing about little mac knows that when he's off stage he doesn't get paid minimum wage cause he's dead but as soon as they jump out there to try and hit him without a plan he'll use an instant side b to get them off of him resulting in a slightly embarrassing failed edge guard there are many more situations where people will edge guard too early but they all involve players making the same mistake not considering enough of the opponent's resources if ness is thrown off the level there are surprisingly a lot of mix-ups he can go for to either avoid opponents or hit them away he can fare up air double jump at a bunch of different timings double jump with fare or any other aerial drift either back or onto the stage as he double jumps air dodge magnet just recover low while he still has his double jump pk thunder won the stage before snapping the ledge pk thunder 2 twice yes i have played this matchup far too many times the fact that ness a character known for having a supposedly mediocre recovery has this many options for getting back to the stage to keep track of may seem discouraging to anyone who wants to get good at edgeguarding but don't worry it is still possible the main thing you're going to want to do is force the opponent to recover with less resources in a more predictable way now pause i should warn you that this won't always be possible as recoveries in this game are much better than they were in previous smashes so you'll probably want to learn how to ledge pressure as well but there will be opportunities to edge guard people occasionally so it's important to learn how to recognize and take them which we'll get into right now pay attention to any punishable recovery patterns the opponent has if they constantly double jump right after you send them off the level you'll want to keep a mental note on that and eventually start punishing them by stuffing it out if your opponent tends to air dodge whenever you get close to them you should try to punish that as well this time by waiting for it and delaying your attack even if the opponent likes to recover very low a lot of the time which seems safe if they show no signs of stopping you can still hit them for it since they are leaving themselves vulnerable before they upbeat now nobody's born good at paying attention to people's habits in smash so the best way to improve at it is to simply do it more focus on the opponent either as much or more than yourself over time you'll get better at recognizing and punishing their patterns and will start to find players doing things that you wouldn't have noticed previously the reason you want to punish the opponent for their recovery patterns besides the fact that it lets you hit them is because it could afterwards force them to use one or more offstage resources meaning they might soon be forced to upbeat which could possibly result in them losing their stock if you continue to edge guard if you punish someone's whiffed attack for example they might get sent far enough to where they have to air dodge off stage which could very well allow you to punish it or hit either their double jump or up b afterwards worst case scenario you forced them to use their double jump but they still made it back to the stage you at least got some more percent on them and could very well be in a good spot to ledge pressure another thing you can do to get people to expend their offstage resources is try to bait them out to do this you simply need to follow the official banana boy three-step baiting process first make the opponent want to use the resource that you're trying to get rid of second position yourself to punish said resource while avoiding it if it's a threat and third well punish them i'll just give some examples of this in action to help it make more sense going back to our nes and luigi match let's say luigi wants to bait out mrs double jump there are several things he can do to pull this off but this time he's gonna stand at the edge of the stage with his shield down this will make double jump fare seem to nest like it'll get him back on stage with some damage to boot ness takes the bait and luigi jumps over his attempt to go for the forward air he then punishes his lag to send him off stage and proceeds to punish his upbeat when he's forced to the bait worked because it followed all three of the steps my genius self came up with jokes aside luigi made double jump fare seem like an appealing option to ness avoided it once he took the bait while still being in position to punish and then hit him afterwards here's another example if you're against a cloud who tends to get pretty aggressive when you go off stage always throwing out an aerial when you get close to him you can jump out there and make it look like you're about to get into his space once he gets antsy and pulls the trigger you can out space the attack and punish him afterwards he might be forced to double jumper air dodge making it easier to continue edge guarding him as we all know cloud's recovery isn't the greatest see it's the same process cloud's opponent made him go for the option they wanted position themselves to punish it and hit him one important detail here is that i said the cloud tends to recover aggressively if you notice that your opponent has patterns of going for aggressive recoveries defensive recoveries or any other recoveries that they're ultra fans of i'd suggest baiting those out specifically because it'll obviously be more likely they'll take it there is one instance where i'd say edge guarding too early would be fine and that's if the opponent intentionally uses their last resort move which is usually upbeat early in this case yes it's totally acceptable to just go out there and hit them it's worth noting that some recoveries are extremely hard to punish regardless of whether the opponent is predictable with them or not chic doing a fast fall bouncing fish rising up air and using an upbeat while holding down against a fox is a good example of this like good luck hitting that fan in this case my best advice would pretty much always be to stay back in ledge pressure since there's really no point in trying to edge guard a recovery that's almost impossible to mess with anyway kinda sucks but it's ultimate still this shouldn't discourage you from punishing the offstage options that your character can deal with finally if you go for an edge guard and it misses which will happen at some point to every player your goal should be to get back to this stage faster than your opponent if you pull this off it'll ensure that you maintain stage control and don't put yourself in the opposite situation you were just in you'll see mk leo do this a lot when he misses his edge guards making sure to recover as quickly as possible and he'll afterwards immediately switch to ledge pressuring his opponent now there are a few ways to edge guard while putting very little stage control on the line for one you can go for what i call a passive edge guard which is simply just throwing out a hitbox below the ledge while double jumping back onto the stage as you can see here you can also shoot projectiles so you don't even have to get off the level additionally you could try to to frame people with a down tilt or something similar which again lets you potentially hit the opponent out of their recovery without leaving the stage just make sure to watch out for moves that hit above the ledge like ken sure you can or crumbs up b if you do this what leo often does is he simply recovers faster than his opponent which might have something to do with joker but also he's a god of the game so it's probably both regardless if you do go a bit deep offstage try your best to get back to the level as quickly as possible if you miss it won't always be possible but it's something to aim for and that's edge guarding too early and how to fix it next get hit by spk thunder 2. most people who have ever played the nest match up for like two games have had an experience like this at some point they'll notice the nests recover with enough b react at the last second then go for the edge guard anyway resulting in themselves getting untechabled at practically no percent this mistake although very common just like the last one is a lot easier to explain how to fix so this part will definitely be shorter to stop edge guarding too late you first need to acknowledge why you're doing it for my personal experience i found that three of the most common reasons it happens are because people hesitate react too late or time their edge guard too slowly so let's go over how to fix these one by one if you tend to hesitate and second guess whether you should edge guard the opponent or not resulting in you stuttering and being too slow you'll simply want to stop doubting yourself and commit fully just go for the edge guard you have in your mind you're not going to perform a backflip off the diving board if you don't confidently apply every step of the process quickly before hitting the water you're not going to win the poop race if you don't apply proper squatting form and eat fiber before letting it out so make sure you treat edge guarding the same way just do it oftentimes it's that little starter that forces you to screw up and you would have hit the edge guard if you were simply more confident commit to your edge guard 100 and you will almost certainly find more success now this doesn't mean you should be too fast though as that's an issue as well and you should always time your edge guard appropriately according to the speed of the opponent's recovery and also you definitely won't want to try and cover the opponents up b when they have a million other resources at their disposal and are likely to do something else since we just went over why that's not the best idea but when you are in a position to realistically hit the opponent out of their recovery don't let your hesitation be the external factor that prevents you from achieving your wildest edge guarding dreams cringe if your problem is that you react to the opponent's recovery too late my suggestion is to preemptively predict when they're going to use the move you want to hit them out of so you can be more prepared a great way to do this is by taking away the opponent's different offstage resources most importantly their jump so you can know when they'll be forced to use a certain option which is usually their upbeat that way when they let it rip you'll be fully ready and it won't come as a surprise keeping track of the opponent's recovery patterns and their timing also helps if the opponent always uses their upbeat a few seconds after throwing out a double jump up air that will make it easier to time your punish better for example but if you notice someone recovering within .00001 seconds before they snap the ledge your best bet is almost always to just stay on stage finally if you simply time your edge guard too slowly you might just need some more practice against that character which you can get in many ways this includes but is not limited to finding people to play online around your skill level of course showing up to tournaments when they're back and getting help from a good friend if they're willing to grind edge guarding timings with you another thing that might help is going off stage a little earlier i've seen a lot of people who will jump off the level to edgeguard fox once he's almost done ascending with his upbeat if those people were to simply get off the level a little sooner they would have had a higher chance of hitting him other issues i've seen have been people fast falling too late throwing out their attack too late or jumping off stage when it would have been faster to run off the side if you can identify what your specific problem is you'll be well on your way to fixing it also as a quick little tip preemptively holding the ledge might help if you edge guard low recoveries too slowly since it puts you closer to the opponent than if you were to start on stage this is especially good if your back air is a solid edge guarding tool now i have seen some people who edge guard too early or too late a lot not because they hesitate or do anything i've previously mentioned but because they simply want to always go off stage and end people's stocks no matter what even if the opponent's recovery is next to impossible to mess with or their timing is way off they still go out there and try to hit them see you don't have to go for an edge guard every single time the opponent gets sent off stage there's no pressure to your opponent every stock in fact it's often next to impossible you're not a failure for not landing or even not going for an edge guard this game wasn't designed for them to always work and top players know that as they hold back on theirs quite often cu ledge pressure is an amazing thing and a big part of what makes smash ultimate unique therefore if you can learn to get good at that while still taking realistic edge guarding opportunities when they present themselves you'll definitely become a much more well-rounded and overall successful player and there you have it i may have spouted a bit too many words from my mouth in the past however many minutes this is so i'll end with a quick summary don't edge guard too early i.e don't go for a punish on their upbeat when they still have a lot more resources at their disposal that they're likely to use try to get rid of the opponent's resources by keeping track of their offstage habits and baiting them ledge pressure if you can't edgeguard for whatever reason get back to the stage faster than your opponent when you miss an edge guard don't edge card too late meaning don't hesitate react too late or time your edge guard too slowly and remember that you don't have to edge guard all the time but still go for them when you can hey honestly guys i really just wanted to take the time to thank you all so much for the support over the past few weeks and the ad revenue my landlord is probably no longer threatening me with eviction and i'm now down to only 80 thousand dollars in late rent fees so that's progress anyway i guess i'll see you all later bye [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] go
