seen young gunslinger Jeremy Mayfield Cool Hand Jeff Gordon had the points leader of the pack Rusty Wallace [Music] they're all primed for this Texas Stampede once the roundup starts pilgrim only one cowpoke will stand above the herd [Music] [Music] in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports presents the Texas 500 over 200 million dollars has been expended over 200,000 race fans are here it sold out Texas Motor Speedway and expectation is in the air throughout these dance but apprehension hangs like a dark cloud over the 43 drivers who were about to race for four million dollars in purse the second annual Texas 500 memories of yesterday and crashes memories of crashes and practice and qualifying and memories of a year ago on this track [Music] one year ago where you can see everybody trying to get in single file right at the first rate debris on the main tackle on the sand truck dark one then crash in the center of the field collecting two three cars as they broke away [Music] in all ten cautions eight for Rex 73 laps under yellow a year back and was Jeff Burton climbed out of his car ready to sing god bless Texas as he won his very first race hello everybody and welcome to the Texas Motor Speedway what a race we have for you today this is the one that's been talked about for days because of the track conditions seepage through the track what will happen we don't know you're going to find out in the next four hours of 500 miles of competition here on this facility we've seen all kinds of brilliant action and yesterday it was a great moment when one of the old names in racing and a new young face came together for Victory Lane and there was a very Det proud dad you know you raced quite a while before you really accomplished a lot but he's done it and a pretty pretty good style they race right up there when winning the Daytona 500 a feeling I have inside and I'm proud really proud of him and Dale jr. just when I turned used his handed he gets a little excited sometimes on the radio I reckon like I used to he does a good job and he stayed cool air run friend run good dirty and beat joke with some tires but he had fun - good all day tracing hard and I think he's got the points late now so I'm at that hold him down over there and keep him calm for the record books Dale Earnhardt jr. his first career Grand National victory comes at Texas Motor Speedway well there you see it that's the track the whole nation is talking about and for more about this track and about this race let's go to stock car racing magazines dick Berggren up at the front row can and what an interesting front row it is to young drivers neither of whom has ever won a Winston Cup stock car race starting on the outside of the front row number 42 Joe Nemechek and what a great day he had here yesterday in Texas finishing third in the Grand National race and starting on the pole 28-year old Jeremy Mayfield but the last practice session yesterday was eliminated because of problems with the racetrack so he didn't get a chance to try the chassis setup underneath this race car well we've got a guy who never won a Winston Cup stock car race driving a chassis that's untried starting on the pole how's that going to work out well we've made it a you know plenty adjustable and these guys are really good you know we sit down yesterday and spend a lot of time resting idea together in both teams on what we were gonna run and man both of us got a lot of different stuff underneath our car and a lot of adjustments so it should be exciting day for everybody well there have been three stock car races here the history of this racetrack two of them have been won by men who had never before won in their respective divisions could be a third today let's go to Bill Stevens Rusty Wallace is leading the Winston Cup chase by one point over his teammate Jeremy Mayfield he's qualified six but rusty you're competing against the racetrack today as much as the other drivers yeah just as much as everybody we it's been giving us a little bit of problem but I just drove around it just a little while ago to track literally nice and clean and smooth and we'll see what happens got a hot day with no practice and I'm sure everybody be making adjustments today well last week to track up the better of Rusty he only got a hundred and sixty laps in and then went out this year he's looking for some frontier justice right now Ralph Sheheen is with the driver that's number three in Winston Cup points that is Jeff Gordon he is also the only man to have won two races so far in 1998 but Jeff you start 17 today pretty deep in the field will you try to make up all the ground yourself you can let your pit crew the Rainbow Warriors help you out of pit road well I certainly I don't think I could do it on my own it's gonna take a total team effort for sure and I'm gonna rely on those guys a little bit in the pits today for sure they've been cranking out some great pit stops hopefully I can help them out a little bit though - and we can kind of work off of each other today that's the luck to you Jeff Kent's choir you know a second game down pit road is good for at least 50 to 60 yards on the racetrack and track position is going to mean everything when it was over a year ago on this track Jeff Gordon finished 30th well let's go to the folks they're going to make the call on today's race Buddy Baker Ned Jarrett and Mike joy thanks Ken and hello everybody Burton Smith has spent over 200 million dollars here building and improving this track to make it fan friendly the drivers though still just making their it's acquaintance rains in Texas have been heavy over the last two months double the norm and that's why we have water seepage out of the track and that's why NASCAR will throw a caution flag before 30 laps so teams can check the setups they did not have a chance to preview during happy hour yesterday afternoon Ned Jarrett yesterday in the Busch race we saw teams take on no tires two tires and four tires on pit stops and each of those strategies work pretty well from time to time yeah that says a lot for the tires they have here Mike and also it says something that they can look for to do today I think we'll see all those scenarios sometime during the race today because track position is so important on this racetrack they've learned they try every trick that they know to try to get up towards the front because it is a difficult race track to pass home and the fact that they didn't get that last practice yesterday afternoon which is so critical they have unknowns under their car don't know exactly what they'll do bless the fact that they worked on the track overnight made some patches up in turn four we'll give them a little bit of an extra challenge as well and Buddy Baker the Ford Taurus has won at the rather has led two thirds of the laps this year about today well you know they've really started a real turmoil in the garage area but Chevrolet's won three times for tourists only twice in pontiac once but that's where it all ends 42 top tens for the ford taurus 14 for chevrolet and 4 for pontiac and then after atlanta they took them all to the Windtunnel nascar evaluate it took a little spoiler off the fort and made them very equal now well we'll see some of the drivers we'll watch today this is a track that favors first-time winners Earnhardt jr. yesterday Jeff Burton one year ago today picked up his first Winston Cup victory at this racetrack there's a look at Burton's number 99 Ford out of the Jack Roush ops one of five cars from the Jack Roush team in this field today I want you to watch Dale Jarrett today his driving style suits the racetrack that you have to have patience owned he and his crew chief they know how to setup a car for long run look for Dale Jarrett today another guy we can look forward to is Bobby Labonte he were in third here last year he has won three out of the last four races at the Atlanta Motor Speedway attract is very similar to the Texas Motor Speedway so look for him to be up front during the pre-race our pit reporters pulled the drivers on what they would expect and what they would watch out for during today's race we're on the same boat we all have the same obstacles out there but I think just being real careful is going to be the key out there and staying out of trouble you know every racetrack we go to has has you know its own obstacles and you know this one it has thrown us off for loop I think the lack of practice is going to be tough on us it'll be fine I mean you know the concerns about water or they sure that's not you know not not a concern the degree of difficulty this racetrack is at at attend but that is not changed much by any little bit of water or something else my preference I'd redo the transitions to the corner you know coming I'll turn forward the wall for me needs to be moved out a little bit will give you a little bit more racing room yeah you can race on it like it is but it's just it just makes it a tough facility but maybe we can blame this on El Nino really that's what the cause of all the rain about here is is just coming out of the race track so El Nino get out of here getting set to fire off the Texas 500 let's go trackside [Music] generally with [Applause] [Music] I'll be back to bring you the starting lineup and roll them off for the Texas 500 after this in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 is sponsored by Pennzoil specially formulated for today's stop-and-go driving stop go Pennzoil Miller Lite who remind you that anything can happen at Miller time and by autozone the best parts in Auto Parts [Music] 200,000 race fans on hand for the Texas 500 it's a lazy hazy Texas kind of day outside Fort Worth 67 degrees humidity's rather high light breeze and just a light haze and a lot of sunshine the asphalt is 101 degrees and it's nearly that inside the race cars as they roll off for the first 2/3 pace laps have a look at the starting lineup second career pole for Jeremy Mayfield who's second in the points Joe Nemechek front row Joe is right there Brown over 2 or Burton's seventh in this race last year with rookie Kenny Irwin chat little third time in its career top-five start and Rusty Wallace the point leader mark part knew what at Las Vegas a month ago and Robert Pressley David Green starting in the top ten and Gary Bradbury a career best start row six Atlanta winner Bobby Labonte and Mike Skinner who led ten laps here last year Dale Jarrett Jarrett winner at Darlington and Rick bass pole sitter at Rockingham John Andretti along with Kevin LePage in the eighth row two-time race winner Jeff Gordon this year with Brett Bodine Ernie Irvan six the Daytona ricky rudd pipped here last year Sterling Marlin and teammate Wally Dallenbach in the 11th row Jeff Burton who got his first win here last year and Randy Lajoie subbing for Ricky Craven Bobby Hamilton and Kyle Petty in row number 13 Johnny Benson pour straight toptenz with Craig sacks in the 14th row to veterans and ports geoff bodine at Ted Musgrave Kenny Wallace at a Ford and Ken Schrader's Chevrolet [Music] mcenroe 17 Hut Stricklin and dale earnheardt to Daytona winner Darrell Waltrip made the field on time driving her an Hart's car for Richard Steve Bart and Dave Marcus his second start this year Provisionals led by Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott both former Winston Cup champions veterans Jimmy Spencer and Michael Waltrip forced into provisional starts as were Dick Trickle who crashed in qualifying and Steve Grissom Blake speed at a qualifying wreck and he takes the final provisional start there were five drivers who failed to qualify for of the Texas 500 and a couple of those drivers were victims off the water that started coming up through the track when they had to postpone qualifying on Friday afternoon manufactures breakdown in the field today there'll be 22 for 16 Chevrolet's and Pontiacs and Chevrolet is leading in the manufacturers championship today's race with 43 cars starting it'll take three hundred thirty four laps to cover the 500 miles these cars can go 60 to 70 laps on a tank of fuel that's 22 gallons last year Jeff Burton inaugural winner a lot of caution flags though average speed slowed to 125 miles per hour you see the cars coming through the quad oval part of this racetrack it is a mile and a half in length will start at start/finish line five degrees of banking go down into turn one and two twenty four degrees of banking five degrees down the backstretch into turn three and four where there's twenty four degrees of banking then back to five to the start/finish line trouble spots here so far I've been in turn one with the water seepage down there we don't expect that to be a problem here today turn four there's been some repaving done down there so that's going to be a challenge for the drivers here today that's a turn we'll watch you field warming tires and being split into led by the pace car at pit road speed you're with Jeremy Mayfield the Mobil one camera riding along with our pole sitter today and his teammate Rusty Wallace the Miller Lite camera in Wallace's Ford starting sixth he has a one-point lead on Mayfield mark Barton and the babbling camera that's inside car number six one of the Jack Roush Ford's Martin will start seven week ahead a teammate Chad little there another of the Roush cars is Jeff Burton the defending champion of this race the Exide batteries camera in the car that starts 23rd for Jeff Burton Ricky Craven on the mend Randy Lajoie is the substitute driver for Craven the Budweiser cam ins for the frogs there's a Randy Lajoie he will start 24th today okay Louie Jeff bodean starting 29 in the Phillips twenty-nine starter and a learn art they taunt a five on her champion and the proudest father in Texas today his son one yesterday Earnhardt will start 34 and our first plus financial camp rides with Bill Elliott today former Winston Cup champion starting in 38th position Wallace holds a one-point lead on Jeremy Mayfield four of the top five in the standings former Winston Cup champions and that's that's how they got there was getting an early start getting up there in the point standings early Wallace with five top fives and six races this year n vo record Mayfield right with him let's go to Ralph Sheheen Paul Andrews is a crew chief Jeremy Mayfield's Paul winning car earlier this week his 28 year old brother Rick the youngest of three was reported missing off of the Southern California coastline he is a boat captain they found the boat but not Rick they called the search off on Wednesday Paul Andrews is racing here today at Texas with a very very heavy Andrews was the crew chief for Alan Kulwicki and eerily five years ago - near the day from Alan's tragic loss in a plane crash Paul Andrews brother is lost at sea [Music] field is packing up for a start Jim Roper is on the flagstick in 1949 he won the first sanctioned NASCAR race for what was then the strictly stock division and it became Winston Cup he drove his Lincoln from the Midwest to Charlotte to race it on the old dirt Charlotte Speedway and couldn't drive it home because NASCAR tore down the engine they had to tow it back and I got to see that race he is on the flag stand today NASCAR's 50th anniversary celebration green flag the Texas 500 back straightaway challenge for second spot down on the inside war Rick's that Pontiac I'm a field [Applause] is strong their turn one cars go slamming to the wall my luck behind them reminiscent of last year's left one branch Burkhardt Senate Jeff Gordon's in it luxe of race cars got banged up there's Hut Stricklin along with Earnhardt down on the track apron pinned to the wall John Andretti and Rick mast climbing out see Rick mast coming out the right side of the car there John Andretti now coming out of the car he's undoing his radios likely fuel pump breakage on Andretti's Carwin that car slapped the wall fire crews quickly on the scene and just as in the inaugural this racetrack takes its toll at lap one [Music] and I suspect it probably started because there were cars still running side by side and that high groove there's Ted Musgraves car you see a lot of damage on it let's see Hut Stricklin is out of his car now you see Earnhardt moving around and his evils to get his car to go chaplains talking to earn art trying to give directions as Earnhardt tries to see if his car will steer remember at Daytona a year ago in turn are flipped the ambulance got back out gotten his darrell waltrip comes to the pit road and that cheer you hear from some of the crowd is because Jeff Gordon's car is torn up and coming to a halt on pit road lot of damage on his Chevrolet the only two-time winner this year one last weekend to Bristol Tennessee they'll get that car repaired and getting back out there but it'll be a long time dick Berggren hard damage to Jeff Gordon's car he has shut the engine off much of the damages in the right front corner tremendous sheet metal damage up front this is an aerodynamic track and this is a very very difficult way to start the race today particularly for the guys who had hoped for championship like this one a texas-sized twister in turn one Earnhardt's driving back to the pits Mike Kenny Wallace has gone to the garage area with a lot of damage that's Darrell Waltrip with one car and you can see Earnhardt coming back for attention from his crew he had a feeling that car would still run does he wants to get it back so they can fix it worked on him getting back out there he knows it won't be competitive but he wants to make [Applause] penny the crowd is going nuts we'll take perhaps nine cars out here's who we have involved Kenny Wallace Kevin LePage buck Strickland Dale Earnhardt Rick mast John Andretti Ted Musgrave Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon now Earnhardt is going behind the wall and back to the Winston Cup garage area where the team will need him try to get that car back out if he can return to the racetrack every position he gains gonna be worth another three wins to cut points at the camp worked on the cars right now back the red flag is out now they can assess the damage get themselves prepared to go to work on it but the race has been stopped this red flag now they cannot work on the cars until the cars roll again good point net the cars on the front straightaway that we're not involved in the incident can receive no attention from their crews so to make it fair to all the cars that are parked in the pit and in the garage area likewise can receive no work now the mechanic can look at the car talk to the driver evaluate the damage get every tool they need in position but they cannot touch the car until the red flag is removed what happened going to turn one looked like a couple of cars side-by-side and once it started it just became a chain-reaction type of a deal the first two cars up to the wall there goes Kenny Wallace and in the middle John Andretti Rick mast as Kevin LePage there in the 91 he was also in the very start of this accident and let's show you the view from Dale Earnhardt's root camp [Music] alright now I give his own race car Darrell welcome over the course from Randy Lajoie trying to sneak through [Music] motor spins around haven't hit anything yet it's been safely out of harm's way he said wool boy there's another look top of your screen still is hard to tell what actually started it you can say john andretti come up and hit kevin lepage and then the yellow car of Rick mast in the middle of the screen look to me Ned to be the first car sliding up toward the wall it did look that way and certain that the accident started rock where he was running and in the garage Larry McReynolds Dale Earnhardt his arm around Larry McReynolds talking about the damage and everyone looking to find out what it means that's exactly right excess in the damage you can see a monolith under there bill Stephens with Kenny Wallace he's hot he's unhappy and may have seen how it started Kenny well I don't know I mean I just first of all just can't believe this you know is everything was fine and the 78 car got out of shape first I seen that I dope clear to the bottom of apron and then somebody somebody red as you can see here drove all up over me and then the cars really just got artificial damage here but they won't let us work on the car because it's under red condition I don't know you know I'll let I'll let everybody else talk about the racetrack but I can't believe it the bush guys ran great all day yesterday we can't even make it one lap but squirty's a great sponsor Mobil one I just want to get them in there I'm sorry brother my guys are going to work hard we'll get this car out there we'll all the talk about crashing guys it's almost self-fulfilling prophecy back to you saw Eddie too hot their team manager rolling a tire into position for Kenny Wallace 78 was Garry Bradbury and he may have been low on the apron has that incident started perhaps we'll have another look we'll be back to Texas were under the red flag welcome back to Texas Motor Speedway two laps have been complete the firsts under green the second caution for an accident that's involved nearly a dozen cars down in turn one very reminiscent of the start of this race last year involved Darrell Waltrip Dale Earnhardt Hut Stricklin Ted Musgrave Jeff Gordon Ernie Irvan John Andretti Rick mast Kenny Wallace Kevin LePage were all involved and this accident may have been triggered by Gary Bradbury's car shooting across the track and way down low on the apron let's go back and have another say Kenny Wallace down on the inside there we're going to see some three-wide racing but this is not the cause of the accident as receive Kenny Wallace backs out there we're going a little bit further around the track as the camera picks up turn one watch a car down on the apron save the card that went out of your out of your screen down all day for that was Gary Bradbury Mike when he came off a turn for coming around for the first lap to finish the first lap he was very high most of he was not able to get back down coming off the turn for and then but the time he got to turn one he had got down on the inside of the track and really went down on the the hate for an off the racetrack going into that so whether that's spawned this whole thing I don't know know that let's show you what Jeff Burton saw the windshield of his number 99 Ford a ride with the defending champion of this race [Music] but you saw bradbury down to the apron just before we don't know if he was a it's not part of the contact you're right he was down paddled away but know whether somebody reacted behind him because of where is going thinking they might spin back up off the track most of time you go down on the flat part of the racetrack you're going to come back both the the banking but he did he stayed down there well as they thought he was coming back he saw Rick mast car on the wrecker let's go to Ralph Sheheen he is caught up with a Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt damn can you tell me what happened out there I'll say 275 fire spinning up front of us and I started checked up well everybody was in front checking up they all got to record well I went to the high side which I thought I could clear part of it but I knew the 75 was up there somewhere but when I went to the high side they started coming back cross track the eighth car got me in the door drove through in in the car into the wall backwards so we just got hung up and it just I don't know what happened with the 75 but somebody looked like spun him or got into him and there's just a big rectum and as if I was every man for himself how about is your car can you get back out it's pretty bad frame damage on the rear we're going we're going to work and do our best to get it back out we got a little damage on the front but most of the damage on the rear thanks to he'll get to work kevin lepage his car being hauled back to the garage here's bill Stephens with another driver who got all too good a look at what happened Ted Musgrave and Ted you think it was the racing surface pretty much not responsible for this I don't think it was the water I'm not really sure but I don't think was avoiding water down there it just said there's only one groove you know you get out of that preferred groove right on the bottom and there's nothing out there to hold the car I'm not quite sure it could be a replay of last year and see anything that you know I haven't seen any TV one guy might have just been trying to get down in that groove you don't got tapped and turned around and like I say there's nowhere to escape here because he get out of that groove and a car just takes off anyway and that's kind of what happened in Earnhardt and I we went up to try and boy to round the outside up on the top but once he get up out of the groove you know there's there's nothing there to make the car stick to get turned back down around an accident I was going for Dale was going in that's how we ended up but hey if you turn around a prankster our team's gonna get this thing back out and I'll guarantee you we're gonna be out there four points they were luckier last year when that first lap crash happened at all was behind them Ralph Sheheen well Dale Earnhardt is out Dale Earnhardt's car is out Darrell Waltrip driving Pennzoil car what happened I don't really know I told the guys on the radio when we started to race there I said boy that first turn looks slick he could tell they've been you know some work going on down there and I guess that's probably what started everything I was behind Hut over here and he checked up because he saw people reckon and I got into the back of him and then others hit me after that but you know it's a beautiful sunny day to think that we're all in the garage wrecked like this the car count here the torn up car count here isn't in surmount I've never seen so many torn up race cars from one weekend you take the Busch cars the Winston Cup cars and now this we've torn up I'd say over 30 cars here this weekend it's it's that what do they have a massacre down here somewhere I forget what it was called the Alamo the Alamo x/y the word yeah well this is about like the Alamo and I don't know who's going to win my car may not look too bad for this day's over with Ken Squier well in all Derrick's some 35 cars Darryl have been collected out here red flag is out around the track lap number one let's take a look not only at this year but at last year now last year Darrell Waltrip was instrumental in that wreck that's where it started this was lap 1 and 13 cars were collected right there in turn one word happened again this year among those Bobby Hamilton who also got hammered again this year there were 13 in that Jeremy Mayfield was in at Kyle Petty Jericho Sachs Bobby Hillin Robby Gordon now there's this year's wreck just moments ago and again Bobby Hamilton pinned against the wall with Rick mast at Strickland in it Musgrave Gorton Kenny Wallace got caught the rookie Kevin LePage Bernie Ervin's car torn up and Garry Bradbury may have been a part of it but he was able to keep going let's go to dick Berggren Jeff Gordon's car sits silent on pit road John Hendricks team manager for this car brother of Rick Hendrick who owns it how bad is the damage on this thing we're not real sure right now how much damage it is Ray's plan is to try to keep it on a lead lap as as as much as we can he's there working on the car we don't know how much damage they're gonna see just told Jeff he was going to check the tow in the car make sure that was intact and we won't go into a stop back out feel like it'll take a while to clean this up under caution give them a chance to work on the car and it's not a team and a better than the rainbow lawyers to fix this ball oh they got a lot of work to fix to build Stevens yeah there's a lot of work right in front yeah that's ernie irvan's front end and just beside themselves down here trying to assess the damage for any urban you're really looking for some luck and so far the season has been just not a whole lot of it yeah that's it's a shame you know because you know the team's the skittles Pontiac um they've worked so hard to you know get a good race car for here we had a decent qualifying run and well I felt like we had a good car and I'm you know just we don't get to show it today what did you see from where you were well I mean all I can tell you is the 78 car was up on the outside everybody else was kind of single-file in front of me and a 78 was up on the outside and he was obviously trying to come down and um kind of bunched everybody up and got everybody running into each other it's pretty bad it's a bad deal you know it's definitely a bad deal Terrell shrieking well Rick mast you're out of the race and you had more than one problem first to crash and then a fire what happened you know you got one group racetrack man and you get hung up on the outside you try to get down well coming off three and four the 78 car we're still hung outside and then when we come through the trial of whatever I looked up I saw the 72 get crossed up I mean I don't know what caused that Gary's a very good race car driver I mean you know those things happen and so the cars around me in front of me eased up I got out of the gas and eased up the 43 behind me eased up everything is gonna be good and somebody ran over the 40 30 hit him hard that knocked him into me and turned me around that it was just on you me brick doesn't miss to drive on the highway we've driven in bumper traffic we've gone to more than we should in speed wise we see the Busch cars get through there star how come this did what what is the driver on the street am I missing I don't have gluten I know one thing I'm glad NASCAR will sanction body when you go start hitting these walls like this for safety you think man I'm glad it's NASCAR I'm walking forward but I don't know these things happen to me again it's a one groove racetrack it's a very tough track I mean it's very demanding and you know we've all complained about it but I that didn't have anything to do with the wreck you don't mean these things happen like I say when the 78 car got crossed up and again Gary's a great very good racecar driver who got into him what caused that but when that happened well you have a wreck at any racetrack I don't care if you're Texas or Daytona or the first lap or second lap of the race if somebody towards the front gets crossed up it's gonna be a big mess you know and it happened here just luckily thank you everybody everybody survived everybody's okay and you know my room can bullets a little mangled right now but we'll get him at Martinsville Mike joy thanks Ralph you just saw Rick mast car over 75 being dragged back to the garage area ten cars involved in the second lap crash it's nowhere near a record they had a 37 car wreck at Daytona in 1960 we're under the red flag we'll be right back it wasn't until 1985 that a NASCAR driver had a chance to clinch a million dollars in a single afternoon but at all red-haired boy from Georgia Bill Ali had won two of the sports three biggest races and then came to the venerable Darlington Speedway in South Carolina in winning he clinched the Winston million 1 million dollars four million dollar bill between turns one and two where the fire Upton from fuel from Rick masks car and John Andretti's car also catching flame they have washed down that area so as not to damage the asphalt and the reason for that is that's a foam that you see on the top part there and they have to watch that down it's very slick little bit of speedy dry down at the lower part of the racetrack and up top once again Dale Earnhardt's view as he rolled off into turn number one to start the second lap of this race [Music] Wow that hurts [Music] earlier today about the water seepage that has plagued this track this weekend due to heavy rains over the last couple of months we spoke to NASCAR had Bill France at Speedway had Eddy Gossage well we've got a couple of problems that we've had with a track we've talked to the their senior management Bruton Smith and humpy wheeler per se there is concern as we are there go they're planning on getting everything resolved and fixed we're gonna have any trouble today we're gonna be the whole Texas 500 en we feel and I guarantee is that tomorrow we're going to go to work and we're going to find a permanent fix this is just a band-aid it's going to work today we're going to make this thing right on the complaints from the different competitors about the the transitions coming from the bank back to the back to the to the straightaways that that may require a whole lot more engineer and that may take a while but they're interested in having the drivers loved in this place like they you know and enjoy them coming here red-flag is still out here at Texas for the last 21 minutes repairs from that turn one incident they cut grooves in the track to aid in drainage in a y-shaped down to grooves leading to the bottom of the racetrack but that v-shape at the top cause a groove caused some of that asphalt to chunk out yesterday and so they put an epoxy patch in last night right there and that seems to have held up quite well let's go get back to the garage area and Rock they have just brought John Andretti's car back in here and John I see your car covered with all the dust from the fire extinguishers what's it like inside when you have a fire I never took the time to hit the button not fair it's bad enough the way it is I'm just get out get away from it so I didn't even do anything but it's one of those things I don't want to I don't want to get burned and I know we can fix the car so you just climb on out what happened out there from your perspective he looked like the 75 car got turn sideway our 78 car got turned sideways or our got sideways going to turn one and everybody started slowing down and and unfortunately the cop behind me didn't slow down and hit us really hard and got it got the whole thing going I don't know if something happened behind him or not but thought I was in good shape and feeling pretty good about where I was gonna go and ended up getting spun down to the end field and then unfortunately the car turned again and went back up the banking and I was real fortunate that another car was coming through crashing up against the wall and got me going straight again so all in all I'm pretty fortunate John you were one of the quickest cars here in practice and now you're crashed out of it you've seen both the good and the bad of this place should we be racing here well I look at it and say the racetrack doesn't drive the race cars drivers do so you know I mean the track can take all the blame I mean drivers have to we know we're going to get a caution in lap 30 NASCAR's told us is they're going to give us a caution on lap 30 you know why don't we race into a race into caution you know there's no reason to get over anxious and that's coming from a guy that usually is way over anxious so I mean I would just settle in in a matter of fact I even let the 75 car in front of me at the start because there's there's no sense of making him sit out there and struggle and maybe get crashed in the first 30 laps for now it's real unfortunate purpose it's just that 30 laps it's 30 laps and pit stops are gonna change everything anyway so you know hindsight's pretty pretty obvious mike joy thanks for out the other car Andretti spoke up was Rick mast that turned him straight who looked like Ernie Irvan was the car that got back got into him to turn him just as Jeff Gordon got into the back of the first car to go around and that being Rick mast up in the high groove track repair continues now this is from the accident not from any water seepage they want to make sure this track is clean before we go back to green we'll be right back [Music] welcome back to cBS live coverage of the Texas 500 under the red flag and I misspoke a moment ago when Jeff Gordon got into Rick mast it was his mast was going up toward the wall look at the right supporter of your screen there CrackBerry right there you watch him meet back straight right now he goes down on the apron get sideways everybody behind you starts checking up and there's contact right there it's John Andretti into the back of Rick mast as everyone tried to slow up there his mast went up toward the wall he collected the nose of Jeff Gordon's car and a total of 10 cars are involved Darrell Waltrip Dale Earnhardt Hut Stricklin Ted Musgrave Gordon Ernie Irvan and ready mast Kenny Wallace and Kevin LePage and actually there were a couple more including Randy Lajoie that spun around but I don't think he hit it then he was very fortunate bill Stephens Hut Stricklin just got back from the infield care center how you feeling well I'm bruised pretty bad then my left side you know I was I got took a pretty good lick last week at Bristol and you know got re-injured today a little bit somewhat but I'm okay nothing's broke or anything like that but you know I just hate it for everybody at Circuit City and Kendall and Carmack's and all our sponsors uh you know you know this Chevrolet Monte Carlo I mean we weren't really hard on it thought we had a good race car today but just not gonna get chilly today hot you were qualified on the back half of the field this is one of the concerns starting a race like this back there isn't it well it really is I mean you know it seemed like you know this week start you know at this racetrack whether you start up front or back where we start you know everybody's having a tough time and it's just gonna you know I think the racetrack is gonna be fine if once we can complete you know 15 or 20 laps and kind of get a groove worked in but you know it's it's it's just a little tough right now getting started on it that's gonna dick Berggren Bill Davis car is on the front of this grid Warburton will take the green flag as the leader bill you have watched car after car get bent up and demolished here how do you want this guy to drive once the green flag drops the Lord's only got one speed in that spot open and he's that front where he needs to be right now considering the conditions so hope our car stays good we say up there right now some of the engines are firing on pit road periodically at least we hear a motor fire up they've had to spread speedy dry here on pit road because so many of the cars have been leaking fluid as they have been towed back to the garage area that has about been cleaned up hit road looks good right now but I'll tell you what Mike those drivers in the cars are hot those cars have been sitting still on pit road there's very little air moving they are sitting in cars many of which have black interiors and I'll bet they're sucking the water right now and dick they're all windshield facing the Sun right now [Music] one of the drivers injured in a crash here last year Ricky Craven is now sidelined with post concussion syndrome from that another accidents last season ken Squier sat down with Craven to get an update on his condition I feel fine now there's days where I feel less than 100% and and everyday activities but typically it's not until I get into a dynamic situation in our racing situation practicing that I began having trouble the senses that you depend on your vision or your balance the his things are so sensitive and when you consider how close the field is now you can't perform without it Talladega terrible crash awful crash you walked away and waved it off Texas of a year ago on this track practicing is this the one that fits you I think they all contributed and then I think a few others belong along the way if maybe if I had taken the advice of the doctors and sat out a month for two months I wouldn't be facing what I'm basic now which accelerated all that and they say hey you know now you've built up numerous concussions you're gonna sit down and relax a while we can correct this but it's going to come at the expense of some time what are you going to climb back in what's the expectation when I feel like I'm able to come back to Winston Cup racing like I in the form that I was in in 1995 when I came here then I'll push the button I'll be back I'll be raring to go and I'm excited I'm the one good thing about setting out is that it's made me appreciate what a wonderful thing I had and when I get back my attitudes gonna be better my focus will be better and I'm gonna I'm gonna challenge my two teammates for some wins clean up nearly complete up between turns one and two we're at Texas Motor Speedway CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 will continue after this message and a word from your local station in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 is sponsored by the 6200 napa auto parts stores nationwide and by first plus financial we're working first for you they are fired off the cars and those that can begin to roll mic in 33 cars still on the track 9 in the garage and 1 on the pit road Jeff Gordon they're working on the cars as we speak Ralph Shane Paul Andrews is a crew chief for Jeremy Mayfield Paul they've started the engines what have you said to your driver well you know we Bulo lose there at the beginning a really loose just have no control over the whole car like to retract control dirty we're pretty sure that was a problem [Music] we gotta make it to the first real a few little Robert the track cleaned off but that's the main thing we got to get some laps under under everybody's built here without any caution so we can look at all have real good rest and race - bill Stephens I'm with Jack Roush Jack Roush with five cars in the starting field all in all you're pretty lucky yeah we were pretty lucky the front end must raise prime star car got caught up in it it's got the front snout bent it's going to be hard to get it back but the other four cars got through clean a lucky break for the guy who has pretty much defined the multi car team in NASCAR Jeff Gordon rolls out that mess but he can drive it he worked it is you can see in front in sideways that means re-written houses so it's not tracking at all this turn sideways going down into the corner there you can see it now Gordon wants to say on the same lap with the leader that's why they left the pits before repairs were completed as under caution he will come back in here's Terry Labonte in for a change of tires a lot of cars on pit road right now that's a very smart thing to do if you run through a wreck of that size and Terry Labonte was in the back of the field there he feels he run over a lot of metal he's making a pit stop now change Terry from bottom to top Lake speed the next red car is Randy Lajoie and spun Kenny Schrader is in here comes my body out Michael Walzer Steve Grissom this Jimmy Spencer have all made pit stops on this lap if we're to say that the wreck when it started that's right you say that's very smart there is Lajoie now his car they're working on that front valence the front spoiler when he's spun down from the 24 degree banking to the flat apron that spoiler may have gotten been under adding lift to the nose which Lajoie does not want but not a scratch on the race card selfish he mounts in very good shape Jeff Gordon has taken his car to the garage after one lap don't be surprised to see him back out later in in 1960 at Daytona and the modified sportsman race Canadian dick Foley looped his car and behind him 37 cars piled up Foley was not one of them he went on to finish 10th in that race that was NASCAR's biggest Brad what happened to Jeff Gordon in this race last year take a look Ernie Irvan runs in the back to Greg Saxon here comes Gordon running him to the back off Ernie Irvan two years in a row Jeff Gordon's car gets rumpled and crumpled here at Texas Motor Speedway Ward Burton is your leader Joe Nemechek start at second is running there Kenny Irwin jr. that's the black car number 28 is third the rookie right behind of Jeremy Mayfield for top fives in six races for Mayfield just one championship point behind his teammate at the top of the standings right behind Mayfield is Rusty Wallace in fifth place the point leader there's a look at Wallace those two cars are painted identically only the decals are different between Mayfield and Wallace sometimes they're hard to distinguish a lot of times it looked like one car out there because they usually when you see one the other would very very close and big red Pegasus on the side of Mayfield's car the prime distinguishing mark between that and rusty Wallace's now Wallace's number two car is owned by Penske South that's a triumvirate of Roger Penske Rusty Wallace and Don Miller the 12 car of Mayfield is owned by Michael Cretu ffice and Roger Penske who bought out Crenna puces original partner Chicago businessman Carl Haas so they are teammates in the sense of the world until you look at the title to the car I guess it's not like brother-in-law I guess without think you're right you're right behind them is Chad little in sixth place vii Robert Pressley eighth Mark Martin ninth is Mike Skinner and tenth is Bobby Labonte Minh Dale Jarrett Ricky Rudd Sterling Marlin Wally Dallenbach Gary Bradbury whose car went down to the apron and may have triggered the accident remains on the lead lap in 15th Brett Bodine is 16th Jeff Burton is 17th Bobby Hamilton Kyle Petty Johnny Benson the top 20 rusty wallets champion an 89 looking to repeat some nine years later five top fives in six starts what a way to get the season start remember prior to this year he had never finished I think in the top ten at Daytona much less the top five and always started the season behind in the point chase this year he starts way up front he's had a great year so far consistency of course he had an engine problem last weekend for Bristol Tennessee which hurt him but he did hold on 2-point lead even though pimp the Daytona 2nd at Rockingham third at Las Vegas for darlington getting set for a restart we go back under green in Texas brings them down [Music] would strung out to the front straightaway clean restart there no that's well sir playing for that was started bought in the past Ricky we took over the position Nadia second Chevrolet third Kenny Irwin in Ford buddy baker said at the top of the show he thinks between the three banks I think you have I mean Pontiac one in Atlanta that's the sister tractor here single father beginning to get a little ragged looking at juicy Dale Jarrett just under there sterling Marlins looking to the inside and that was the race-winning pass yesterday get underneath the car coming off turn four hey Bob people buy these cars pushing up just a little bit coming out of the turn he just wants to rock him a good place to ride here keep that car somewhere at the top 52 way after a 33 minute red flag crash on lap two Burrage on CBS a Joe Nemechek Kenny Irwin [Applause] the Rusty Wallace and ruckus it close the door and get your turn three [Music] a rather going her when turn one yeah that's he knows he's not going to get the traction up there he might lose turn three have rescued Jeremy Mayfield meanwhile moves up to third he has passed Kenny Irwin with Mike Skinner in 31 running Rusty Wallace well keep it matter doing something silly NASCAR indicated because our practice yesterday was called due to seepage in the track they have a caution sometime in the first there did you see that telemetry a hundred right away there 180 already and they're just starting into the natural telemetry almost 200 miles an hour [Music] to the back straightaway Nemechek towing Jeremy Mayfield the pole sitter it's almost 200 again before he backs off at over 8,000 are [Music] right on the bar named attack me in the 40 [Music] into the turn if you does so they feel makes the pass takes over second even though they are gonna stop Jeremy made the second important thing [Music] and he has because second place has been battling about the word could be receipt passing since we have seen here at the last people at four and second we'll see if he can run down or last lap it was eight tenths of a second the gap it stays constant dick Berggren grand national car that he ran yesterday and exactly the opposite problem it wanted to push in the turns so he wasn't able to transfer a whole lot of one got there - today's race car finished third yesterday in that race running third today Mike front row Joe bright blue car with the rainbow over the sides of the hood as Nemechek right behind him Kenny Irwin jr. just behind him Robert he's really trying to make a move towards the front they pick look they're kept little on in couldn't make the pass he's running a sixth-place she had little running in fifth okay this is an animation that we have to show you what push is you notice the front the racetrack that now when you hear loose [Music] this is loose or you could call this a wreck if you ever get this loose you're in big trouble but down into the corner you can see the back of the car losing traction going up towards the outside wall that's big trouble right there something you hope to never experience in your streetcar [Music] and the green number 97 taking a look at Kenny Irwin jr. in car number 28 Robert Pressley who's had a lot of success in the Busch grand national series not all that much in Winston Cup is in that 77 car with his best start of the year eight trying to move forward Martin's in the picture on the right side of your screen and expect him to be in the thick of the battle all day he's seventh you're in the seventh place car of Mark Martin right again SIA from the grave track look top this racetrack the to come out of the turn course what they start dip right back down there drivers have complained about sleek is that radical bump endurance everybody is chasing down that be closing up let's go to Ralph Sheheen for an update on Jeff Gordon as you can see the crew is working feverishly on the rear end of the car they're just about set to put this entire rear end underneath the car this is it it's all set to go here the truck arms this will connect to the frame the springs will sit right on top of this a complete rear end all set to go as soon as they get the old one out it's all on both but here it comes they'll slide this in five more minutes the rear end will be in that speedy service the part either the rear end or one of those trailing arms was bent that's why they had to replace him by this what net the Mayfield is down to about four targets an hour later Warburg [Music] flats all season those coming in the 22 that we've completed so far see Burton's car moving up the racetrack just a little he's beginning to get sohara granted the first and Jeremy pack very didn't his tires quite as much a little bit he's moving right in on Mark Martin had a notion to try to the inside of Robert president thought better of it is surrender battle for the leaf because Mayfield has caught race leader ward right there Burton's car on her bill Davis and his wife Gail came out here on their motor side [Music] to Texas with the Kyle pennies and [Music] in the corner but it really [Music] 23 laps complete thirty if there is not a caution flag prior to for an incident so that the teams can check the setup stick with the last hours practice yesterday afternoon due to water seepage in the track there is the gap they feel to spend within tenths of a second of Burton who has led every lap in part 22 [Music] he drops to half a second behind Burton just on that one slide over the six position looking at his Racing stable Chad little in the green car Kenny Irwin fourth Joe Nemechek thir [Music] room down there yeah room but he's got to get up there where he hears he may not want to pull over and let him go [Music] 26 laps complete here is the race from fourth on from left to right that's Irwin in the green car of little and Pressman Dale Jarrett gaining on think they're just sitting there riding not taking it I think some of these cars has Mayfield dashes into the lead he went by Ward Burton like war [Music] Jeremy Mayfield the polls to lead a lap pick up five bonus points and now you know five four points the radios they adored they married [Applause] complete 549 still with a look at chat little nothing there there's your leader may feel now in second in the potty back to Nemechek Chevrolet third Martinson Presley Shepard and and the constant will wave this time on race leader Jeremy Mayfield this is the caution that NASCAR promised chance to check their setups under the car see how tires are wearing practice yesterday afternoon after the Busch grand national race said this like we've seen it many times in NASCAR Winston Cup racing because of certain circumstances no practice because of weather whatever the case might be NASCAR will allow to come in check their setups as you say I've seen how that power you can tell a lot about the chassis on how the tires are wearing you cannot have a practice you what race conditions are any better this so in 31 laps were under caution interesting that Jeremy Mayfield's said that he and Rusty Wallace have completely different setups under their cars they trade a lot of information and seem to drive a similar style and sometimes like the same setup it's not today but he said that they build the lock into the would make it adjustable the in the springs that are removable Springs stronger of course they can make sway bar track bar adjustment there's a lot of things that they could do to adjusting economy Petros I think every car on the field pace cars gonna be lonely out there he's gonna be out there by itself [Music] but it won't be for long because they'll make the back 20 second pit stops Bobby Hamilton here's Ralph now the leader Jeremy Mayfield is by taking out one [Music] the body and worn her that's the second group there [Music] got out right behind you commander not very long here and we talk about that's the top of the show that we might see some of that just to get track position I think that's what happened with those two pace car picks up the leader the Chad lifts up their realign Belmar car here's their burgers eighteen point seven seven from Ward Burton that was a good pit stop Rusty Wallace on the other hand had a very slow pit stop the problem they tried to adjust the chassis by removing one of the spring rubbers that slowed him down then just as he was ready to leave the pits two of the crew members from Robert Presley's pen who had been working right in front of him were in front of Rusty as he tried to leave rusty had to back onto the throttle and as a result he had a perfectly miserable pit stop that came out second chair car number 97 they are behind Mark Martin and there think they're wondering did I beat you across that the event road which was there sooner that sort of staying up there beside it now this is interesting from a strategy standpoint Jack Roush has five cars in this race did he have two cars take two tires and three cars take four tires we'll be right back the Texas Motor Speedway this CBSsports race summary is sponsored by autozone the best parts in Auto Parts [Music] 33 laps 49 and a half miles complete three different leaders thus far lead changing three times at an average speed of only 128 we've seen them clocking well over 180 and 200 miles an hour in the straightaway but it was that incident in the early going that costs 10 cars a chance and a win there those are the ones that were knocked down a peg coming to green and let's go to Mike joy the big winner on pit stops good place Terry Labonte started 37 raced his way up to by taking on two tires Labonte is in and that's what you smoke over the top of the show drivers and deeds would use strategy and the bits to get up front for him that down the back straightaway down for a cat food look at Jeremy Mayfield moving in and for [Music] for the first time today Roush Racing teammate [Music] second and getting it and we haven't seen too many drivers on the outside going into turn three stuff it in there not that brave yet that changes today goes on all righty but right now everybody realize the actual start of the race everybody knows what the ever card set up like you want him now [Music] under green schedule headstock [Music] that's it [Music] Jeremy Mayfield penske Cratylus number 12 [Music] [Music] you bet you right now when you have to make it on schedule stop tearing Livadia just followed by [Music] the two tires I don't know what [Music] is a good gamble but he's dropped from since the restart [Music] another lab at least [Music] and it explained how the handling changes when you take only two tires we talked about pushing a little bit ago you have a car that's very tight coming off the forces received a Marcus going back there now the Brennan wants to push up towards the wall back he only put on two tires that loosen powers a little bit and the car-free are going through the turn it really can tires routine gentlemen this is the right rear tire that just came off the Jeremy Mayfield's car now the depth readings are taken in here three thirty-seconds of an inch is what they normally are right where is two and a half all the way across that is good time and he's up front whatever they guessed on that chassis dick Berggren mark Greene did a his stop the Goodyear engineers put their stopwatches on him 50 laps later he was running the same speed it didn't drop off at all everybody else around here saw it as well we're going to see some very interesting pit stop strategy some of it has unfolded already Jeff the 97 all [Music] so far at least about suscribers all operating independently [Music] thanks dick that answer my question no team orders on their own here's one of them you're riding with Jeff Burton last year's winner Jeff coming up through the field you can look right in in front there his strong suit is off the part look to the inside [Music] I think he's faster than Kenny is right now especially through the [Music] first time Winston Cup winner one year ago [Music] no that's a one proof racetrack and say Kenny Irwin to pull over come upon him in the middle part of the corner realize [Music] Dale Jarrett ruins are now behind him fourth place rather behind Mayfield Mark Martin and Chad little he started 23rd Jeff Burton field so he has played a Marquart second place car got a good view of those but hurry there's only six left I think I'll get him [Music] Chevrolet number 96 and that's back at 18th position as you heard wallace did not he was running in tenth one position sometimes the other way around that he gains in [Music] getting in the car get the little Gator [Music] and Jeff bodean as we said made that unscheduled two laps down [Music] there by himself one is the leader of the race during the night bill comes off the turn four Jeremy making-of do it about the same thing he driving up there all by [Music] Bayfield currently enjoys a 1.2 second lead and another eight tenths of a second back another half second to Chad little then Kenny Irwin Dale Jarrett Ted Musgrave back in the race after that lap to crash there is the gap first a second [Music] where the tunnel of turnt wanna a quarter seconds Randy Lajoie chasing Johnny Benson our 25th position make repairs to his spoiler and let's put him to the back of the field in yesterday's Bush Grand National race started last and finished on the lead lap insects damaged car on the they're at the inside [Music] [Music] that's wall-e dollar back to green a black car just ahead of Johnny Benson Benson has had a great season since missing the day under that yellow car just [Music] top fives and two more top tens since Daytona CBS sports live coverage of the Texas 500 will continue after this 56 laps 84 miles complete here in the Texas five Taurus and astrology is the sign of the bull and they're on a stampede here in Texas the first seven spots are Ford Tauruses Mayfield Jeff Burton Mark Martin Chad little Kenny Irwin Dale Jarrett and Robert Pressley or Kurtis Pontiac is the first GM car and followed by Joe Nemechek Chevy and [Music] domination of the then finished in five the tourists and who might be back to the Dale Jarrett has passed Robert Pressley principai is filled up to Jared he depressed adjust passport burped in a moment ago to take over the seventh position and he's called up to Jerry racing for position for some time [Music] is theft Derek in sixth rustling seven inside ted musgrave number 16 that's the way they'd rather do it something inside Reggie it's a loud reception from the fans some cheers so not Barton returns to the racetrack after 34 minutes garage he comes out of the onto the track in 35th position that yes sir yawn believe bill Stephens well as you saw after that first test top tenon started drifting backwards at first they thought that the two tires they saw were bad to go but they left them up because Perry radio Petrucci Vandy great saying I think I got to lose tie rod or a broken shock [Music] they can fix if they will but at least 96 1984 Winston Cup champ Vonnie new paint job his home state race five Chevrolet Jeremy Mayfield watching top favorite Durrell [Music] came to Sadler racing in Nashville Tennessee as a [Music] at the Winston Cup level tapped by cale yarborough to drive his wit stone cup car has now moved over to the away from he got around him as Owens not showing all of his cards he's got a pretty fast race card the crew just wants him to take it easy this is also the first time there Robert not impressive Wallace cars racing since - he had to ganglion cyst removed this week one from his right wrist one from his right foot he's at home watching the race on TV dick Berggren and he's do it really well Kenny Irwin is having a great day today giving away his weekend started he began the weekend [Music] get the work done on the car he has one top-five finish dick that coming at Atlanta Mike Skinner Jeff Gordon back on track he's not making laps he came back out that position would be hard or attrition he'll Stevens Jimmy Spencer started at 39 from foods up to 17 crew chief Donnie wing that please with the last pit stop they had because they made the car a little bit too tight now they want to loosen it up on the next pit stop and thanks though buddy Darrell Walker comes back in the race he was also you're watching from Rusty Wallace there's a look at Waltrip a little more black than yellow on that day look Teresa Burkhardt on the machine but a hi Steve Park wrecker driver that car last week and [Music] Jeremy Mayfield has now opened up 4.2 second lead on last year's winner Jeff Burton [Music] they lost the reins on that horse in that car just sticking right down on the inside of the racetrack thank goes where he wants it to go both Musgrave and Waltrip have been black flag for speeding down pit road after coming back in the race Musgrave has already served his stop-and-go penalty that that is one time that one father DW he's been out forever and ever so one more laughs the other the phrase adding insult to injury comes to mind trip is not up to full speed but [Music] Darrell Waltrip bill Stevens well Darrell Waltrip not having a great day but you got a feel for his crew chief Felipe Lopez with Steve Park of Britain Atlanta Felipe Lopez went home and found out he speed jets there in the nine car and one thing they don't want to do go a lot down so he turned up trying to keep from getting laughs but the way Mayfield I don't think only boss like speed that rent machine with the cartoon characters [Music] just miss being involved in the incident at lap 2 Mike Skinner earlier thought he had a tire going down pitted four right sides at lap 64 he's back on pit row as Mayfield continues to eat up this field let's show you in replay Gerry Mayfield's view of that bump he says Oh guys please please don't let anything happen and it didn't yes they didn't bother poor monkey on that corner battling away buddy jump sit next to me I thought they bumped [Music] a great race car there's terry labonte trying [Music] Terry Labonte labonte runner-up himself a lap down on the early here at Texas here's our telemetry on Jerry [Music] trouble to cater Kadir one tor look like a single car at turn two terry labonte got his back caution is out laughs 81 Erwin rookie driver former USAC champ and graduate of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series brings out the third caution of the day in the Robert Yates for number 28 listen what happened bike there is right there at a pit road see the escorts coverage of the Texas 500 will continue after this message and a word from your local station [Music] ken Squier still under the second caution of the day at lap 83 we're celebrating NASCAR's 50th birthday this year and here's one of the fellows that help like that very first candle 50 years ago on a three quarter mile dusty track down in Charlotte North Carolina Jim Roper won the very first race and what would become the Winston Cup Series sure is different today hi Jim great today Jim ropers from Texas been writing here in the dallas-fort Worth area now when he won that first race the reason he won and he got a right to protest they said he'd been two or three laps down but he had a way of figuring exactly how many laps that car of his had run that day how'd you do it we had a camera Flint Dunaway and he came out the winner congratulations on that first win and getting all this started nice to have you here thank you sir Jim Roper who did it first Charlotte North Carolina fifty years ago Kenny had one of the first sponsored NASCAR cars also because they tore down his engine in technical inspection after the race the Mecklenburg Motor Company in Charlotte the Lincoln dealer gave him a new one to put in the car to drive all the way home to the Midwest if they put their name on the side of his car for the rest of the season and he do Wow interesting story bill Elliot after pit stops Eliot is up to six plates starting at 38 today Jeff Burton is the race leader from Jeremy Mayfield Mark Martin Chad little Robert Pressley and Eliot go ahead the 99 car of Jeff Burton beat everybody out of the pits so he has become the leader as we get ready to restart here Jeremy Mayfield is in second place I was just looking at Jeff Burton suggested there back out front again right now yup still believe a couple more Mike Skinner is trying to get one of Green Skinner is three laps down make that now - as he is out in front of leader Jeff Burton that purple and black for [Music] cars on the lead lap at 85 127 miles this is the most fun step that we've seen in for a while [Music] it's downtown Danielle so was far back in the field and he tires he's got himself up at the top team six Ford's lead the Pontiacs of Ward Burton [Music] turn [Music] with him down north there been three stock car races NASCAR races on this with NASCAR [Music] Mayfield's back in front [Music] [Applause] mark Barton closing in from third and Skinner will remain three laps down on that luminous Chevrolet Nemechek battle if the green car let's be a Marcus is one lap down at number 71 qualified at Daytona and this is only Marcus's second start of the year buying it on time [Music] twenty-one moving right sex number 98 Redbury he is right forces five ways got off this pitstop that's the car number 78 that you're saying going around Marcus and there's David Green also having a good run in car number 96 going around Marcus that's the 20th and 21st place car also on the lead lap Johnny Benson Terry Labonte is back on the lead lap after finishing top five 50 and Rudd's dayglo orange tailed number 10 black to mention that terry labonte was back on the lead lap we saw him get left but as he came around to get to pass him jeremy mayfield backed off let Lombardi get back in the lead lap or courtesy to you [Applause] [Music] Randy Lajoie scar the camera sits right on top of the rear would be [Music] [Applause] [Music] he's dropping back just a little bit I don't know what kind of father but if food go back yes he lost a lot of time up there buddy doing that apparently his car is not working too well battle for seventh place the inside of Brent Brandes writing at the 27th position scoring now showing him one lap down Oh be careful danger squeezing by the inside there botanas ahead back straightaway look here jerk Jeff Burton has retaken to me [Applause] ninety two laps [Music] 25 cars still on the [Music] that's in a safe spot here this car change I think they get to work on the [Music] pretty hard you can hear the car he's not backing off way early turning down a stay I think he has a match up there [Music] different severe pressure we'll make a whale of a difference in how that car handles I have done this before the about four tough right Jeremy pull it back on in just a little bit Jeff Burton there he jumped second ago maybe his car is tightening up as these tires get hotter and he's a match [Music] the pursuit second-place car from leader back at Jeremy Mayfield [Music] [Music] patty the Shafi of Nemechek that's your top ten [Music] not Strickland's back on the for fourth place as a mirror build by Robert Pressley Robert Pressley very very strong in you can seem close up on a cab little rap there if they come up on Jeff rap card there we had to check up he lost momentum parotid still quarter of a second between Burton and Mayfield we mentioned that Strickland back out on the racetrack hall so he's just passing back into the pits but he's going back out again and judged that all laughing it just like you can say Jeremy Mayfield moving in within [Music] but just behind him there's a teammate grouse car coming up you can to view their bark party on our pole-sitter and second-place car here's Ralph Paul Andrews is a crew chief for Jeremy Mayfield what did you do on that last dog and house [Music] thanks pretty good next pitstop do laughs 172 if we standard green they were last in at lap 82 Jeff Burton is not liking what he's seeing in the mirror right now whose condition which [Music] [Music] the racetrack [Music] put pressure on him but it looks like a pretty well [Music] Burton right now how concerned are you with looking in the mirror he's got a clean racetrack created a problem for the mark buck is coming up back is gaining on the lead new laughter just in front I'm going in to turn while adapted to Walter own team r17 has been sold Texas businessman who will take about a four to five month hiatus ironheart needed a full-time substitute or injured rookie driver Steve Park to fill the seat as sort of strange bedfellows those guys get it's free days worked out good it's a good we have situation promote [Music] on the right side of your screen we'll be right back to Texas after this this CBSsports race summary is sponsored by Texaco a world of energy [Music] 106 miles complete six laps 100 miles why Changez escalated to 137 miles of you see those trash victims from way Paige is still working then the Irwin is suffered and there's your new leader its Jeremy Mayfield out in fronted with more the call here's Mike joy while we were awake Robert Pressley also past Chad little that was for fourth place let's show you how maybe you'll got the lead back you can see man feeling really cut down in front that much and he just dropped back there and the captain mouse game continues and look like Berta did he have a hand in the air there it really looked like he pedaled it yeah I think he pedaled it and just just let maybe we'll go on by blues back behind him there and he didn't like the feel of the racecar so Jeremy Mayfield is out front you're watching live now [Music] bark-bark mister fourth chat littlest bin Rusty Wallace in the number two car Joe Nemechek just to have Bill Elliott [Music] in about 30 and a half [Music] right out of the inside that's a good example you can see the two car Wallis very very cool when Mike Skinner a good race car it's if rusty had caught the 31 of Skinner in the straightaway he could have gone on by but he caught him in the corner and had to wait to get a run on that the next clear street same thing happened to Bart when we were watching him a little bit ago the leaders and then he caught it that they got by going in a second on that little you could say Jeff Burton there caught up only out Mark Martin same problem he caught Marcus going into the corner not on the straightaway putting the last time by the start/finish tribe Mark Martin of Jeff Burke [Music] one point three seconds from second to third so he lost more than a second so it's not just a matter of working the traffic it's where you catch them solutely and when you have tight groove like they have here your time your you can see if you get caught on me out down or you get sideways an all trick of David Pearson easing the car down one straightaway to catch the car coming off the next corner and passing him Pressley who's having a career day today dears dick Berggren he sure is bike his best ever career finish at Winston Cup his fourth Michael McSwain is his crew chief where is all the speed governor in fourth right now we run this kid all year the jack ranges for we're sucking up today he's hurt a little bit from Brisbane he's doing a good job boy just been working hard all the boys this is paying off the drivers working hard too and doing a great job to Ralph Sheheen buddy parrot is a guy who is in charge of Jeff Burton but he is just Clark changing dramatically when he has another car behind him we had to take some tape off the grill while and that tends to make the car run down a little we're skating off him we've led a lot of laps this year we'd like to lead the last one part Harkins is sitting down in our well the race started I'll tell you what [Music] the point situation [Music] exhibiting patience here he let leader Jeremy Mayfield go by here's ricky rudd in the 25th place they're 25 cars on the the rent caught up behind Darrell Waltrip there coming off the corner that'll cost him over [Music] slow em down [Music] down the straightaway speed if you joined us late a lap to crash took ten the track darrell waltrip Dale Earnhardt buck Strickland Ted Musgraves Jeff Gordon along with Ernie Irvan John Andretti Rick mast Kenny Wallace and some of those cars have returned those retired [Music] Marlon and Jimmy Spencer 412 place those Felix uh bodies Chevrolets with Jimmy Spencer we're ready [Music] let's check the bills demons thirty-eight they did not want to be there an abbreviated Friday qualifying session this is the car they ran last year at the Brickyard 400 and crew chief Joe Girardi said but changing everything on it to get it to run right but he says this car this week has been like going to school learn something troubles earn three one car spins at the wall its Musgrave they have just contacted the wall now happened right in front of the vendor caution is out as Dale Earnhardt returns to the racetrack leaders have the caution damaged bus craze did not before the spin out to really happen to it aerodynamically it got him up there he was in the lap to rat fourth caution flag of the day here's a look at Dale Earnhardt 22 laps to repair Earnhardt's car he is right now in 43rd position you'll pick up four of those spots by completing a lap [Music] more points ernhardt in west of what would be a record 8th Winston Cup championship the other two cautions were a NASCAR mandatory coffee coming on the 30th clap because of no our practice yesterday the teams wanted to check their setups and then on lap 81 Kenny Irwin crashed by himself in turn two you see that red flag green Fleck of that that was open [Music] and everyone who was last in at lap 82 should come in ricky rudd had just been over lapped by the leader he will stay out along with the other cars that are one or more laps down all cars on the lead lap there are 24 of them are in this is big break for some drivers we mentioned that Spitzer and a couple of those are back there Sterling Marlin we're 20 seconds behind have around a wedgie the track for a little bit they're gonna change for the same thing [Music] just about even the life of Mayfield pulls out ahead see little jostling for position that final the pitlane her today 18.8 second pit stop for Jeff Burton 19.2 for Jeremy Mayfield amen leading Randy Lajoie [Music] dynamic problems well he came up home in a hurry [Music] the guess Musgrave did not realize that he was coming for that bottom proof like see there with the leader they've happened right in front not the leader watch for Mayfield number 12 [Music] there is going by there Randy Lajoie was trying to lap past must brave on the inside [Music] no more inside racetrack ramen [Music] viii must praise go up he was running a very slow pace Randy Lajoie has right front corner damage to his Hendrick Chevrolet we'll be right back to Texas after this [Music] line go to keyword CBS Sportsline [Music] Jeremy Mayfield won the race off pit road ahead of Jeff Burton Dick Trickle is up to learn drove a brain race today in third place a rental car up near in fact the other day Judy Don levy you have to feel good he back off they want you back at the racetrack and fast for the main Jeff Burton back to the front last year's winter here comes trickle at second place [Music] at an age when a lot of folks have owned up their health you can say chuckles Cartman [Music] the back straightaway [Music] is an absolutely heroic run by Dick Trickle he did demolish his car at time trousered recall there was on this day before the green flag dropped today he is running in third the bills even written and the reason they're doing so well after that last pit stop a two-tire stop Tommy Baldwin jr. just told me hey we roll the dice but so far it's coming up our number he's dad an accent in the modified Tour race today at Thompson kinetic Robert Pressley the Washington for to make that pitstop fight but he dropped back to the ninth position on that pit stop so he lost ground [Music] Dale Jarrett to the inside on Dick Trickle makes the pass now Tara I thought you need on levy had painted the roots of all his cars green because he had trouble finding him on television check on that [Music] Jeremy Mayfield to play with the track bar and wedge to tighten him up for the leader Jeff Burton they're playing with wedge and air pressures to get the same result they need to tighten him up a little bit so they adjusted the air pressure [Music] yeah but you can play for he's trying to tighten that car up they don't jump sideways coz there [Music] one point two seconds ahead of Mayfield Dale Jarrett Chad little Dick Trickle Mark Martin that six scores Joe Nemechek Chevrolet Rusty Wallace and Robert Pressley the top 10 24 cards still on the lead lap Randy Lajoie big crash damage repairs under that caution cave well we were impressed with Bill Elliot's pit stop two pit stops ago helped him get into the top ten in the last pit stop under yellow have to come back in again they had to take out those doughnuts they stick in this the suspension they forgot to do with the first back in and he's off the pilot 20 second place for Elliot [Music] really hurtful Elliot some cars are going to be awfully hard to pass back there here's one up toward the front that's looking awfully hard Dale Jarrett is coming pardon the wall turn to no other contact everybody slows up Sachs was what up those 24 cars on the lead lap [Music] 100 winner named by a poll at Stafford Speedway is one of the top 50 modified NASCAR drivers of all time I'm having a tough day today other drivers in today's race that made that list work Jeff bowtie which should be Spencer that you really hold your breath for a driver when they hit the outside wall and come like Greg facts just did very lucky a car was not coming down in the corner to under not a lot of fluid as what Taurus take a second and to congratulate a couple of first-time winners in NASCAR this weekend spent weekend of first-timers just saw at the top of our so Dale Earnhardt jr. won the Busch Grand National race here yesterday over Elliott Sadler and Joe Nemechek yeah about Rick Crawford from Alabama driving a Texas own truck won the Craftsman Truck race over Jack Sprague yesterday let's see what happened here to Greg sacks [Music] middle of your screen that's correct fact trap they are getting into the corner tell me under Jeff Bodine and they make contact [Music] slams break into the wall [Music] let's ride along with Bill Elliott through that one Saxon bow-tied old adversaries from the modified circuit getting together her helmet a little better so you saw that car go to the wall right back on that gas to get out of there as quick as good buddy shows pretty clearly just how close to the edge of control these cars are all the time well you know he went down in the corner very low there Breck sucks did made very little contact with the boat on a car on the outside but when he turned to straighten the car up it took a set and turned it hard right that was the hard impact to the outside wall radial tires will do that they'll take a set and just just shoot you right straight up in there they get such a good grip and when we say take a set it means the tires which were sliding suddenly the slip angle of the tire comes back to the tire gets a grip and if those wheels are turned hello wall 137 laps completed Texas we'll be right back [Music] welcome back to Texas Greg sacks has taken a hard hit to the outside wall and turned to after he and Jeff bodean made slight contact rescue workers right now are removing the roof of saxs car so they can help get him out and put him on a backboard it was a hard shot with the side of the corner of the car up into the turn to wall and the window the side windows are so small on these cars that sometimes a healthy driver finds it a chore climbing in and out of these cars so to get a driver out sometimes the easiest way to help a driver from the car is to take the roof and the upper roll bars off and that's what's happening right now [Music] get an update for you on Greg sacks just as soon as we can at the right side of the car is what went into the wall bye and folks not to alarm you this is not an indication of serious injury just that it is easier to help break out of the car with the roof and the bars removed since apparently he cannot climb out under his own power NASCAR and Speedway rescue officials there on the scene move the pieces necessary to break out they have a backboard out for him see the damage to the right side that fender Bush did way past the tire or the rear end perhaps may have gotten locked knocked loose in the crash we're at lap 140 of 334 in a race that has been be sent by cautions five of them so far today today was great sex 258 career start in this division three years ago or rather 13 years ago in his racecar but with a Robert Yates Chevy engine he won the Firecracker 400 at Daytona Gregg drove the need for several several races after I got injured 1988 identified now racecars [Music] again we'll get you an update on Greg sacks just as soon as possible number of drivers have made pit stops as we roll under the caution flag here still 23 cars on the lead lap many of those cars back towards the back of the pact including Dick Trickle who was running up there in third place at at the restart he made a pit stop sack screw watching as we are [Music] the monitors that are now in the war wagons long pit lane as rescue work continues I'll put drag on to prevent any further injury [Music] the seats in these race cars wrap around the rib cage there are supports to wrap around the shoulders and both sides of the helmet and then extensions to the seats which are fabricated from double wall aluminum partly for strength that also so they'll give in the case of an incident like this but all that protection for the driver also makes it a little more difficult to remove him from the car if he's not able to climb out under his own power there's not much room in there to work and the reason that room is taken up is for safety risk they have a hydraulic shear that they use to cut through the rollbar tubing that's been done you see on the upper right and the bar across the top of the windshield a great Sachs car under caution for the fifth time for this crash in turn number two [Music] a team owned by three-time Winston Cup driving champion our borough Jeremy Mayfield was Cal's driver [Music] friend of his hospital now front of his Penske John Andretti went over there in fact that crazy dress year before last his first win last [Music] but describe the seats that are in these cars davleen camera inside mark Martin's car scene that seat come right up under his right arm pit [Music] well you can see up on the very top of here around the side of the hill also down part to keep the legs from going out this way also right around finding that's the back of the seat right there the whole Saint wraps the driver up that makes it very very tough it's the drivers maybe shakin to get him out of the car the steering wheel is on a quick release hub that comes off the driver to climb in and out under normal conditions once again this is great sax car we're lap 142 here in Texas Motor Speedway sacks crashing in turn number two after slight contact with Jeff bodean his car got loose and as he turned to correct the slide the tires took traction and sending the car to the right and hard into the wall with the right side [Music] say they're working very carefully but very fast as well he's waved an arm to the rescue workers apparently right from what we can observe is alert and talking to the folks who are from the car Ricky Craven first car with Randy Lajoie aboard has made a pit stop Dale Earnhardt has also been in barring crash damage see him while lifting his arm up over his head you have three inch wide shoulder harnesses to move that's what the arrestee worker going out of the way there unhook of the radio gear and also perhaps drink tube and sometimes tape to that harness [Music] the most direct way to remove the driver is straight up but they still have the seat with Greg sacks there they got him on the part of the stretcher there buddy that's a an excellent precaution being taken by the track safety crews if there is any fear of injury to bring the driver out in the seat get him to the infield care center where he can be looked at rather than risk further injury by trying to pull the driver up and out of the seat that's that's an excellent precaution let's take a look back and see what happened as seven car of Jeff boat on that blue car on the left and brakes acts that black and red machine right behind on the inside their sacks get together right there they make very light contact you'll see the back of in sideways he stares at and it takes he locks a break up and goes front into the outside wall [Music] now again the seats in these cars make full contact with the drivers ribcage area and his hip and all the way down the right leg there's an overhead view she has to come down off the track down to the inside [Music] inside wall of its it and those seats were the same kind of support on both sides try to help spread the load of impact all along the tour so here we are arriving to the turn if he sees that in front accelerates up [Music] so the car circulates slowly under caution CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 will continue after this message and a word from your local station [Music] in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 is sponsored by autozone the best parts in Auto Parts and by Wrangler [Music] welcome back to the Texas 500 Jeff Burke under caution leads Jeremy Mayfield and Dale Jarrett were under caution for the wreck by Greg sacks welcome back everybody Mike joy with Buddy Baker and Ned Jarrett the track has held up well no water seepage no problems other than the drivers negotiating these tricky turns Ned at the top of the day we talked strategy no tire pit stops two-tire stops for tire stops we've seen them all yes we have and don't think it's working quite as good today as it did yesterday bike of course these cars are 100 pounds heavier than the Busch cars we saw run yesterday plus the fact that they have about 200 more horsepower get into the turns faster so it doesn't look like that the two tire changes that we've seen works nearly as well as it did yesterday we also talked at the top about the Ford Taurus as how they have led two-thirds of the laps this year and buddy for a lot of the day the top six or seven machines out there have been those bulls I'm telling you the Ford Taurus right now seems to be a little quicker in the corners and the General Motors cars so maybe I don't know you're gonna hear them thing when this race is over though let's bring you up to date if you joined us late on lap 2 much like the start of the race last year here at Texas in the inaugural a big crash down in the corner Gary Bradbury was way up high swept across the track to the apron and behind him ten cars piled up if somebody just started checking up someone got into somebody who did check up and it just became a chain reaction type of a deal half of those ten cars are in the garage the rest are dented but running here's Ken Squier thank you very much bike 220 miles now are complete here sitting alongside I'm very honored to have one of the gentlemen who has always considered not only one of the hardest charges for one of the most respected drivers in NASCAR three-time Daytona 500 eighty-three Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison you've been here since Thursday and since Thursday nobody's been talking that much about the athletes they've been talking about this racetrack your opinion what are your thoughts about this model and I have well it's it's a tremendous facility certainly it has its own little differences you know spots and these guys are going to have to figure out they had the water problem which is really unusual I've never seen anything like that but it's something that has to be recognized and dealt with the event yesterday showed that the track can produce a really tremendous event eventually seem today direct results of guys making mistakes not the racetrack you know it's a tough place no doubt about it but if they fix the track it drives for everybody they keep talking about the transitions here maybe they should be brought up a little you've driven on all kinds of tracks everywhere what do you think should they change now I don't think they should change it let's go back to the race okay like Bobby Hamilton said this week they're racing the racetrack here in Texas 149 laps we go back to green was able to get by the left traffic jerry was not able to get back [Music] [Music] single file close to the wall that yellow car of Bobby Hamilton hey you just said Bobby Hamilton me right where you do not want to become you can save drop it back here the pedal since Baris backing up we wide around him he was way high on the racetrack Jeremy Mayfield behind Jeff for the lead taking it these young turks don't wait long Jeremy May [Music] nobody's around in nearly twenty eight-year-old Jeremy Mayfield from Owensboro Kentucky [Music] [Applause] a long gap back to the third place car Chad little working around the lap car of like speed there they are caught up behind boat blade speed and Mike Skinner and that has cost him a lot of time speed in the nine car the red card has little gets on the inside of him the green car of down to the inside here comes Mark Martin summer 88 that is tough on the restart trying to bust through those laps they're trying to get back in the lead lap and run near plan too racetrack it just perfect great for these guys that are alive have no chance of getting their laugh now because the leaders are long gone out in front yes on the inside of lexpay the protocol when you're a lap car stay to the inside stay to the outside wrap the heck out of the way what yes they in the grass now he realizes he they can't lap up so we both to the high side here comes Rusty Wallace in a two car when they get down to the corner right here and Roskilde rattled up beside him here comes water now those are lead lap cars [Music] number ten is racing speed for position and place there the blade speed one to run as hard as he could to get away from the cars that he's racing with not necessarily to try to get what the leaders have run off the men at least opposition - Ricky run [Music] five cars officially out of the race when Strickland masks and Freddie from the wreck on lap 2 that forgive me spelling with 20 very funny Jimmy Spencer a five year but he has really really matured as here in this field has run a good race qualifying for this race not very indicative of performance nine cars attempted qualify on the afternoon when the rest of qualifying was canceled due to water seepage everyone else ran the next morning most of those cars were fast cars had to take provisional starting positions to make the show ever placed are there Robert Pressley been up front all day long now he's trying to get good track position to get back up in that top 10 where he can hang on Zoe Graystone Presley number 77 best career finished fourth at North Wilkesboro North Carolina in 1996 car run by Andy Petree moon Allen's Kenny Schrader's car and Leo Jackson where's David Green black and yellow 96 entitled any Schrader the 33 in terry labonte that race is 411 on back 14 Garrett Bradbury in their 16th position in 41 car state prison at the 26 of Johnny Benson those cars are racing for position in the green number eight 21 [Music] most of the leaders last stopped at lap Bill Elliott Johnny Benson and Michael Waltrip all came in and topped off under this most recent caution laps 135 to 147 1:37 Marland Lajoie Benson Michael trickle Terry the body were in so pit-stop sequencing has been separated out wide another pitstop comes up for the leaders they know their car Cardoni as they had him to turn one everybody makes it to their very big before [Music] the what gamma [Music] [Applause] once those front cars passed late he has really moved back in the back last minute around thirty so about lap to 20 still 23 cars on the lead lap before he has got one up he's being shown in 28th place one lap down great Nick stop awhile ago now he's back in the field that's because he stopped again buddy to pick up the other two tires so had trip is coming back to the front Chad little and Green and right behind him Jeremy Mayfield and Jeff [Music] about four seconds was involved in that lap too was listed last in the running order thirty-eight 22 and continues to gain points and positions the number seven his three laps down 31st position you might wonder why would he go back at their Earnhardt those but three points per position that's 15 points where's Victor Jeff Burton re-entered the race in 35th position he's gained only one spot and his 62 laps down a long way to go to pick up another position and here's Kenny Wallace is 99 laps behind in 37th place he was also a victim at the lab to crash right we're a corner where they have central pit stop for Randy Lajoie he's in the dense crash damage that just sheetmetal and replaces that right front tire [Music] I'm looking at Randy Lajoie such as a pizza Terry Labonte was the car out there we're headed Lise a twig [Music] we saw this earlier in the day it's pretty strong right now they are five seconds behind leader chair [Music] and 3.8 seconds behind second place car Jeff Burke for two seconds I hear as the leader takes the halfway sign let's have a look at what happened earlier between these two with the past Jeff Gordon tries to get on the inside isn't handled the dirt right now the grass that's Cohen there right up to the center of the hood there's a little conversation on the roush radio channel about that right now strategy is developing in mark Barton's pit Mike they had some tire trouble during practice year so when they started today they really weren't chachi said it was going to work and Jimmy fennec says it's not yet time this car this number six car has much more in to build Stephens buddy Becky has said Jeremy Mayfield likes to run out front he also likes a little extra walking around money after that last restart is Paul Andrew said hey you the halfway bonus Tyrell Janine there's a brace rubbing the tire for Randy Lajoie that's the problem 250 they're trying to get that away toy running in 28th place too despite a spin to miss the first crash of the day and then being involved in a later one did Mike Ted Musgraves uphill we talked a moment ago about the German might be able to checked out [Music] once again where she went out there got there $10,000 some babies say fishing closing in on the leader once again Jeff Burton works around the outside of Musgrave [Music] and they catch Jeff Gordon in a spot that slows up Mayfield [Music] forest traffic and Holly third fourth fifth and six is three cars Chad little right behind him Mark Martin as they catch Ted Musgraves and work underneath and two more cars are about to be in that picture Dale Jarrett and Rusty Wallace these two Green and the number six of bumper coming off turn four there's Kara the right side of your screen and the white his rusty wallet you can lose diploid didn't do anything wrong he's running down the bottom of the racetrack [Music] Mike I'm gonna point out something back justice just a little while ago [Music] we're just past halfway a Texas Motor Speedway that 12 of Jeremy Mayfield leads the 99 of last year's winner Jeff Burton we'll be right back this CBSsports race summary is sponsored by Wrangler [Music] 267 miles five different leaders 12 lead changes average speed a very slow we have seven cars off the track in a major story developing let's go to Mike joy leader appeared to cut down a right front tires he went into turn one he had led five times for 105 lat and had to come all the way around the track and reduce speed before he could come into his pit let's have a look here that's how to turn forth let's go yeah he's got a lot of rubber flying off from the front of that right we push the right front fender hopefully it didn't knock out the inner panel we're smoking or and he was fortunate that didn't happen going into the turn he was able to get the car slowed down geared under control get it down on the apron and bring it back to the pits you can see him driving it up close to the wall in case it did happen now he knows he has it under control Rachid that just came up this is that right front tire we'll check the see but if there's any damage that inner panel it did have some damage to the right front fender as well so the aerodynamics of the well we'll check another pair Jeremy Mayfield apparently lost two laps making that pit stop to replace right-side tires he's in 27th position what a nice save right here at start/finish just coming through the first of the two dog legs that's why we call this a quad oval now mocks certain - that puts him off sequence with that here's the leader Jeff Burton who has a comfortable lead now about half seconds that 50 mob sequences for fetched up to concern that this thing goes green for a good while he'll be able to make up at least one of those left when others have to make a pit stop Mayfield had led 105 of the 183 laps so far for when pit stops are due for ninth place Kyle Petty number 44 Robert Presley's been in the top ten most all day in 77 [Applause] behind them there you see terry labonte car number five 4:26 does that go by rickie read the car number 10 are there fighting for position as well which is a six laps down 30 to 35 laps before pit stops for the lead cars out of sequence 23 and 136 when some of the cars the lead lap came here campouts up there in turn very very high right front on that car is down [Applause] there's something happening here guys that's that's causing those powers to go down that we've heard about talk about pushing at times and whether or not Mikey yep big crowd the game stop it exactly have no brakes Bert Jeremy Mayfield of now Jeff Burt maybe maybe the break situations what what if he lost brakes going into the corner right you can see them pulling out the sheet metal on the right rear also so he did get in the world [Music] learn about the take him back behind the wall work on this car breaking the breaks she went into the wall the rattlesnakes have been biting the leaders here in Texas first Jeremy Mayfield now Jeff Burton Chad little leads his first race of the season okay there have some guys that have backed off the accelerator a little bit since we've seen these two cars these two leaders have problems Chad little hadn't backed off Mark Martin is backed off Dale Jarrett is backed off Rusty Wallace is backed off chant little all three of them well his bumper brought before this happened and now he's [Music] he heads down [Music] [Music] that Bert had a plan [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] if that wall pretty good and fortunately Chad little was not right behind him you can say part of the brake burner and stop bouncing behind the car that's a big steal part of the brake system bouncing behind the car Rusty Wallace is in Ward Burton is in these teams want to check these right-side tires so they're they're pit stops early absolutely they don't want to Walter get a chance those towers house there's Wallis just in front pulls away and the leader cat little is a you have little come down pit road cars pitting under green four-tire stop for Rusty Wallace my crew chief captain the Ray Charles on the left side this when the leaders change for which everybody else is going to do the same thing the first nine in the pit road already stalled the car little small that that lacrosse on that pitch top thanks dick Dale Jarrett is it as well made a pit-stop as all the leaders it's your party went two laps down because he had to come all the way around the back on a flat tire good even putting back on left maybe the telly once these pit stops are made Jimmy Spencer come terry labonte Kenny Schrader's and Robert Pressley this Joe Nemechek I'd be the first Chevrolet delete he'll be drivers used to have a little door a trapdoor in the right front so they could look at their tire wear not anymore yeah they need before night races we had a lineup wait a minute a common life where you can stop the trend and actually see it Wow and Nemechek will surrender the lead coming on to pit road Johnny Benson will be the races new leader jobs continue here in Texas 200 of 334 laps complete Johnny Benson is the race leader Benson Michael Waltrip and Bill Elliott topped off their tanks at lap 147 to the cars on the lead lap Dick Trickle and Bobby Labonte stop so they are out of sequence with the cars that just made green flag pit stops and are Johnny Benson forth the plaza zip that Bristol last week and two other top-10 finishes and six races joining the Jack Roush team here's Nemechek battling robber position at stake there pit stops he Hamilton has stopped just now while he don't and now Bobby Labonte sterling Marley those tires look coming off a chav little skull parla the silver car Bobby Labonte and green how the leaders coming in Johnny Benson so the waiting for schedule stop Ralph Sheheen Mike Steve Neil the crew chief told me that we're gonna else major threat suspension work to this Arriba taking back you twice [Music] Dick Trickle is on pit road as into the lead right there Jimmy Spencer is one lap down trip and Bill Elliott in this sequence there's Dick Trickle service coming back update on brakes axe the driver who crashed hard in the turn has been taken to Dallas Parkland Hospital for observation but he is alert and could be with his caregivers and take you to the hospital Mike Skinner makes a stop are posted on the lead lap michael waltrip number 21 year leader Bill Elliott Dale Jarrett chat little mark Barton Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd has not stopped during this sequence so rod has got back on the lead lap as a consequence long time since rugs been so he'll be do within the next 15 laughs tires right now and Jimmy Spencer has been in the pit very closely here come to me Spencer the path Texas Hold'em going on right now if you leave Michael Waltrip and Ricky Rudd out there and Bill Elliott you hope a caution comes out reducing the number of cars on but if you draw the wrong than the lead didn't mean the air guys but Spencer went in that card sideways [Music] bill Elliot is in Eliot pits in surrender second place go Walter stop Brothers play another card here well the [Music] that leaves Michael Waltrip and Ricky Rudd not to pin among the leaders [Music] looking up and down it's waving he's coming in a big wave dispenser he drops low down toward the apron off speed and here's your race leader on pit road winner of the Winston all-star race but looking for his first Winston Cup points race victory here's walked up to the Wood Brothers bill Stevens Michael Waltrip is in the pit they're doing the whole deal here then it takes a wedge out of the back right side tires warm fuel to the left side of the car it's going up they're not adjusting the tire pressure on these the par there stand pat there and he goes back to work Dale Jarrett takes over the lead chat little with this little rusty wallace up to third [Music] before too long five bonus points and then it puts a whole bunch of cars back on the lead lap with Michael Waltrip stop including David Greene who is right in front of Dale Jarrett Greene is in the 19th position he actually went to the made pit stops was behind Jared and he is past him since then and has been trying to stay out there knowing that now we're updated on Ricky Rudd he did make a pit stop during the caution for Greg sacks at lap 147 though he was not on the lead lap at the time another 20 laps or so should he choose to try to stay on the lead lap he's in fib 212 laps complete a Texas we'll be right back lap traffic has been the Nemesis of lead drivers Chad little and Dale Jarrett who just traded positions Chad little just kind of he was far as Jared took the careful way Chad little just threaded the needle pensive the lead aggressively but we'll work for you [Music] speeding on the pit exit will cost Rudd who was in fifth place behind the rusty wall quite a bit he's in third right regrets the off turn two one in the car Justin pulling up on brett bodine [Music] straight away to get my vote you can say here on the front two cars here are the leaders chat little and Dale Jarrett [Music] this track has not been cried to leaders today Jer [Music] skaar seems to be who's coming off the turn we managed to hold on several times one car gets up close behind you sometimes that will so where does Dale Jarrett what he wants to get up design be the parent to turn their baby back into the next one this is roses right up on his back bumper Marcus was down below on the inside Garrett Hedlund that game in a second and leader Chad little Wallace just one and a half seconds back Mark Martin nine seconds behind the leader an 8 second gap fact Joe Nemechek Johnny Benson Jimmy Spencer and Robert Pressley 8d cars on and it's to scoot out ahead of the race leader's Ken Squier laps running down here getting I've still got Chadd littles number 97 earlier this season was going nowhere nowhere last his last good year 1995 wounds make some changes last week led 10 lakhs of Bristol grand 7th all day crashed late in the going rustling Jarrett here just 10 laps ago and they swept it out for the lead this is a new Chad little that's leading here in the Texas 500 let's go to round can the one problem for chat little as this is the best Dale Jarrett who's run all day under the guidance of crew chief Todd Kerr English conditional however they finally hit it right on the last pit stop they made no chassis adjustment till they are ready to go racing Dick Trickle has made a pit-stop unscheduled as he was in just about 20 laps ago speaking of Dale Jarrett he is up from 40 a great game this year Menem is on his side I think he's being very very cautious right now look in the center far as the corner that car is rocketship dick Berggren what's the story on tires it's always Mike it is a big story jack roush just hand-delivered this tire that had come off Chad littles car at the last pit stop they took a look inside the tire what's going on is to go fast here in Texas you want to run as little air pressure as possible but to do that you get extra stress on the what happened to Jeff Burton too much stress on the sidewall the tire failed so they wanted to take a look at chance to make sure they're okay well they're pretty okay but they are having have been a problem both shat in or seeing these little tiny cuts show up right around here around the inspection holes now that really won't hurt the tire at all you'd rather not have that happen but these little cuts of the reason Martin had been cooling it earlier in the day they have been waiting up on the racetrack before he really went flying so they don't really have a tire problem to say but they sure are watching the tires real close in the Roush pits dick just how thick is the tread depth of the rubber that they can run on those tires before a cut like that becomes a real problem well this cut mike is not a problem at all because it's look at it here it's in about the depth of the inspection hole so as such it's not a problem it becomes a problem if you lose enough of the rubber so it would knock the tire out of balance and so far nobody's really terribly worried about this are worrying about the possibility of the side wall failing and for whatever reason the tire pressure gets too low thanks to lead chains in the making their side by side down the first was just behind they're back buffer Rusty's been closing and he brought the numbers suddenly it's a four-car battle for the lead from left to right [Music] here on board with and right behind him why Tauruses a baton this time he looked in the mirror well you know any racetrack the drug 200 miles an hour down the very high turn to that this draft over the front car creates a turbulence and like just the second cars riding in that vacuum and when you come up on the side of the vacuum it pulls that second car forward Dave marques makes a pit stop at 231 of 334 laughs Dale Jarrett sure new leader this CBSsports race summary is sponsored by Texaco a world of energy [Music] as we move toward the drama of the line 100 miles with two as complete a hundred forty nine miles to go one tea leave Jane speed at 130 two laps and well over 180 five cautions thus far and here are some of the drivers who have been caught up in crashes today in this second Texas 5-under John Andretti Rick mast all retired early beg crash number two buck Strickland poor car battles it could be Mark Martin see let's go back to Mike joy with a call Steve Wallace have been battling for third position there while we were away that spot changed and yeah Rusty Wallace had got right up behind they just once you say the front hand pushed up honey coming off of that turn you had to back off so here's Martin now right up against the back bumper of second place Chad little looking down to the inside not taking the bite out of that grass this time let's show you the pass for third place just about three laps ago right side of your screen our carton draws a bead on Rusty Wallace [Music] I want to make a point here we talked about Jeremy Mayfield's he make that unscheduled pit stop awhile back as these cars really get in heavy traffic and he went two laps down he's in 17th position but the leaders are coming up on him now he's not too far in front of them of course he'll have a pit stop coming up here before too long because he at spent a while since he made that kids 178 meant when he had that too right front tire so he has run 62 laps since me so the there Jeremy coming okay he's coming in right and he's way off sequence as you said and has lost a bit of right front fender that was likely damaged when that tire was cut down as he was leading the race yes [Music] also Jeff Burton who was the next leader to cut a right front tire and slap the wall in turn three Burton is back in the right here with Rusty Wallace Ralph Sheheen [Music] Jeremy Mayfield's crew already under the car they're going to make a chassis adjustment to the left side they will change four tires remember he has damage to that right front fender major problem that right side where the fender was damage to the tire let it go stop getting even long had to tie down that right front fender that NASCAR would not let him leave that flapping out there on the racetrack a 48 second pit stop William - and perhaps three lakh Dale Jarrett your leader there's the interval to the second-place car the green and yellow 97 of Chad little yeah four six okay and here's Rusty Wallace coming up for third place little insect bites get passing Jared and Brian here's a battle for the fifth position Johnny Benson has they are number 42 of Joe Namath as a matter of fact they're about ten seconds behind but they're battling for their own positions over 20 lead changes today that's already one more than in the inaugural Texas 500 last year the traffic as kyle petty dropped on to pit lane that's to turn one he is it lap traffic right now we're out there getting off the corner extremely well remember Elliot there's his red car with the and a lengthy pitstop and that's dropped into the tail end of the lead lap about to be lapped more on Jared here's Ralph well his crew chief is Todd ferret Todd you have worked on this car all is it finally where you needed to win this race yet right now the car seems to be pretty good I start up grab enough gas car seems to be good she's got a little less than 100 laps to go let's see what close to you that you're gonna be on fuel I don't think he's gonna be close enough to gamble right now anyway but we got a good driver he can save a little bit of fuel what he's talking about is if this thing goes green the rest of it they gotta make another pit stop can they stretch it far enough so they can make that last run home tanka fuel I think so Ned with 87 laps to go right now yes anyone who stopped from here on would probably make much over about 70 lie I'm sorry 87 lat you're quite right depend on when they stop you're watching the leaders Dale chair CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 will continue in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 is sponsored by Texaco a world of energy by the Home Depot where low prices are just the beginning justice Rusty Wallace came to pit road to make a stop Mike Skinner crashed here in the dogleg coming off turn number 4 Road the front stretch wall down near the start/finish line you see Skinner is okay caution is out Mike Skinner got hurt in Atlanta with a crash on the outside wall you can see him getting his breath back there he's sitting on the window sill of the race car Tech Morin hammer and nails to fix that one he has used up the right side we're enhancing you mentioned Rusty Wallace had come into the fifth alert they just changed two tires got him back out he stayed on the lead lap now net as I misspoke before we went to break at 87 laps to go great I was thinking miles they could make it from there according to our pitstop window of 60 to 70 laps drivers would have to wait to lap 264 to pit to have a good chance of going the distance and we're completing lap to victor to run Mike Skinner complaining of a sore neck the brace put on but he's standing talking to the caregivers there at the scene Ralph Dale Jarrett brings his car to a stop they go to work on the tires they will change [Music] [Music] no chassis changes take Bertrand no chassis changes on Martin Martin's car either Oh Jarrett just Beach about where Jarrett's going to assume the lead when the green comes back on again no chassis changes on Marquardt's car either but they were having some conversation about tire pressure it is the discussion of the day down not that stops becomes very important here and again according to our calculations be possible to go the distance from this fuel stop I'll show you what happened to Mike Skinner while we were away Skinner was running about two laps down but just outside the top 20 Wow apparently let go something happened on the right front of that car and it just shot up it you can see how hard he hit really just bashed that right side and the right front [Music] gets it again Skinner the former Craftsman Truck Series champion driving that second Richard Childress car it's not a good place to have facing that wall already just go and then it shows that when you run down on that bottom line of the racetrack and something happens that concrete's a long way away Skinner got the bad luck Jeremy Mayfield had his tire go down on the straightaway and right you could see just a very small piece of that and there had come up to worry about there's a piece right there the favorite itself as we showed you earlier they cut the asphalt for drainage so that any water seepage would drain that way and a little bit of asphalt lifted up that's hot patch right there the really dark part of that asphalt that was added this morning so that part of the tracks still in pretty good shape here 253 laps complete laughs wind down we're back under caution we'll be right back [Music] [Music] 255 laps completed Texas cleaning up after this caution the six of the day Dale Jarrett leads Mark Martin and Chad little Joe Nemechek Jimmy Spencer the front five or Ford's in a Chevrolet the Pepsi 400 is coming to CBS sports the fourth of July and for the first time ever they'll run stock cars under the lights at Daytona in February we got a sneak preview there we go off and running with that flip of a switch NASCAR president bill France illuminated enough light to light city streets from Daytona Beach to the field of dreams in Iowa then they sent Dale Earnhardt Daytona's winning his driver out there with radio to talk to the lighting engineers about what he saw in this first tour of the track first time I came to Daytona and seen the racetrack in 1976 I was a while how big this thing is when I ran out of the pretty impressive face it has been there what you saw was with just the outer lights installed it'll all be ready Saturday night fourth of July fireworks in Daytona on track 8 p.m. Eastern Time CBS Sports will present live coverage the Pepsi 400 that should be something to see we've seen racing under lights in Charlotte Bristol and Richmond Virginia before at 200 miles an hour Wow can't wait we're under caution here in Texas for the sixth time today we'll be right back in what lap we'll go back to green flag racing 257 are complete Jeremy Mayfield has been in and out of the pit several times on here that right front fender stop at lap 256 means he would have to 78 laps to the finish on this tank of fuel as you watched from ova1 Camp David Green stopping to top off as Racing in a lap bobby labonte Kenny Schrader's is in so his Ward Burton Ricky Rudd Bobby Hamilton Dale Earnhardt last year's winner Jeff Burt oh my god say these cards right here are thinking that oh the rest of the way they're coming at a topic that fuel splash should go to gamble on track position cancer in that group yes 14 cars on the lead lap as he watched from Dale Earnhardt whose car was taken out of contention in that lap to crash [Music] 4030 is to 37th place pleats the clips rake sacks and move up another night bill Elliot was on the lead lap most of the day got laughing just prior to this caution he fifteen place one lap behind as you watch from our first lesson Ansel cam Randy Lajoie got in a bump with Ted Musgraves down in turn number three after spinning to miss the lap to crash and Lajoie has made numerous pit stops Budweiser cam shows you that look and Mark Martin start at 7th currently in second place as we get set to go back to green Karen Martin Chad little Joe Nemechek Jimmy Spencer the front 5 good making it up Wow three wide while they dolla back 46 on the left of your screen took a spot for Bill [Applause] and the green car the second drink are the great new yellow car they're made of poetry [Music] in shape [Applause] [Music] not much later but we're saying in here right now but these all the cars out there they dried out for their secrets now there's the shadow and turn number one from the grandstand and sweets on the inside that's Chad little moving past Dahlan back and just behind them Jimmy Spencer has moved on in the corner Nemechek in the 42 [Music] looking back at Jimmy Spencer who's on the lead lap that yesterday the seepage in turn one was occasioned to have had continuous running tires running over that area keeping the track surface having a problem there Jim expensive move down to fourth place job today they're very patient but countin right now he boots contention here Spencer started 39 up front it's Dale Jarrett like I took a look at Dale Jarrett's last set of tires as they came off the car those little cuts to that stick Burton was pointing out before I spoke to the Goodyear Tire technicians about what they call Smiley's because of their little hook to they said on Dale Jarrett's car they're not deep enough yet do they have any idea what's causing them is it the abrasiveness of the racetrack what too much grit Mike as the car goes into the corner it slides up on the track and this racetrack apparently has good grip on the tire and it's rubber is what is doing he's actually just pulling off the tire they say that is what's happening to it and that's what causes those Smiley's sounds dead like if you push down too hard on a pencil eraser and drag across you can tear the rubber in the eraser these tires the radial tires do get tremendous grip a relatively new asphalt like this is spraying on the cars puts a lot of strain on as a heat buildup actually that rubber out like the we used to call a cluster now the Kabul smile Dale Jarrett is opening up a leave as he comes past the start/finish line a complete 266 laps one seven seconds over chat little three car lengths behind little well that cap dispenser on the last lap Jarrett was 1.9 seconds behind says Chad little on the first lap because he got by the lap traffic going into turn one Mark Martin was running second in Japan he got caught up on the traffic and it really costs to go uptown right behind these front three Jimmy Spencer looms and forth closing bill Stephen sicinius I'm with Donny Wingo the crew chief you started 39th or fourth but the question is you have to come in again before the end give me done a good job he's been painting all day and stayed out of trouble [Applause] that was in what we can do patient and Jimmy Spencer is that an oxymoron no Jimmy's a smart guy yes he does and he's closing Spencer is 3.2 seconds behind the leader for the last time around so he's picking up about a tenth of a second to lap there's the gap Dale Jarrett to his closest pursuers chat little and mark mark and Spencer about another two seconds behind them just behind the second life battle there hell in the corner bar let's go trackside to Ken Squier 100 miles [Applause] you don't think there'll be a problem down here in the shadow of turn one but no two days ago this is the time [Music] [Music] and the big question is [Music] we'll be back to Texas after this [Music] this CBSsports race summary is sponsored by autozone the best parts in Auto Parts [Music] miles left to run with his 334 lat I'm leader 22 lead changes average speed at 134 point one eight seven six cautions many of the biggie and there you see the rest of us Darrell Waltrip is finally sooner crashing just moments ago here the Bay Jeff Hinz ignition is fail building for the drama of the in the second Texas 5-under Jarrid leading once again here's Mike joy thanks Ken Warburton has made a pizza though the distance premiere we believe number 22 and I was kidding bills with bills demons a bit ago oxymoron is one more it describes two words that are used together but don't go together like Spencer in patience perhaps neither their Joe Nemechek Robert Pressley and just by look at Presley clone Brad I folded back buffer give the moves he wasn't he wasn't even check back bummer right there [Music] they're racing for fifth place and here to lead battle for the lead Chad little inside of Dale Jarrett who will have to give way goes back in front don't know if Jared has backed off in conserving fuel but he's raving backed his lap speed off here in the last Martin closes right in there's the third place car [Music] four words in the first three spots Yanks and rauch the owners actually it's Jack Rouches mom is listed as the owner of Chad littles car only to race teams Pressley 77 inside and he's going to move up past Nemechek two more for exports to the front Johnny Benson going behind the 26 on the bar Nemechek very loose coming out from Rusty Wallace as they battle on from rusty had a good run Fatima check closed off the bottom lane guys are racing hard I don't think Nemechek silver race friendly when to get a car directly behind it he turned five he had me check up to keep from running in can spawn a spark Barton has closed up on Dale Jarrett that's going to be a long way to go from [Applause] Ralph Shane well there's actually two reasons he's backing off one is to conserve fuel you're exactly right now their calculation trying according to grandparent who does all the fuel calculations is that if he pushes he'll come up about ten laps short so he's trying to conserve that the other reason he was liner vibration in the right front tire he's trying to ease up those tires save them so these got not only fuel but tires not to be in dick Berggren Jeff Hammond has 143 times as a Winston Cup crew chief every one of those times was with but today with Chad little as his driver Jeff Hammond is in the lead you guys got enough stuff bring Chad we'll go first Chad Lula right now you know if we go you know put all the heck of a run here today I'm so proud of his team I don't know what to say about I'm happy to [Music] ecstatic do you have to stop again yeah we're gonna be a bit short all the way so everybody's pretty much in the same boat so you know we're right now we don't [Music] get all the words gonna be gassy Joe a great job behind the wheel can all the guys if just really worked really hard I hope we get this one because they really are it's going to be a fun finish to bill Stephens dick one of the advantages of a multi-car team just a little while ago Jack Roush said since Ted Musgrave is out of contention we'll use his car discuss tires the effector ken Squier fired earlier we was taking some jobs on radio he was looking for things to do raus puts him in here with Chad little they're up in front battling with the very best here they come against Jarrett of an experience in Winston Cup racing can take a great deal of the credit right pitstop to go ken Chad little believe tonight on CBS in the world do they still subject kids to cruel and inhumane treatment in forced labor camps in the former Soviet Union that's 60 minutes tonight followed by touched by an angel and the CBS Sunday night movie the patron saint of Liars starring Dana Delany and Ellen Burstyn Chad little Leeds Dale Jarrett Mark Martin Jimmy Spencer and Robert cress one fuel stop remains CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 continues after this message in a work for local station in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 is sponsored by the 6200 napa auto part stores nationwide genuine chevrolet the cars more americans trust and buy mobile one synthetic motor oil nothing outperforms mobile one we're just north of Fort Worth Texas of Bruton Smith's beautiful speed plant Texas Motor Speedway and after 291 left Chad little leads Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin Ford's are in the first six positions ahead of Joe Nemechek Chevrolet knock ten cars out of the the garage the rest continued after damage repair 30 a NASCAR caution because of this yesterday out so the teams could check tires and setups Kenny Merlin's crash brought out the yellow so to Ted Musgraves break sex and Mike Skinner's all single car incidents since that 250 142 laps ago on the tank of gas he now has Burton at last to seven and so it's a couple of laps down even these cars have to make pit stop they should finish ahead of the chat little green and yellow machine ahead of Dale Jarrett and Marquardt and for more on track conditions here's my crew chief Todd Parrott radioed out to his driver Dale Jarrett to get a report on the conditions Dale those little granules clinking up underneath but he still feels the big bump in the race buddy we talked before the break about scuffing tires you know when you say your stuff to Darren let me explain what they actually do it they're putting the tires through a heat cycle with your that heats a rubber up and they actually harden up at fourth place sleeeeep moves up into a position equalling here as he passes Jimmy Spencer they're running about nine seconds behind the leader 6/10 bhai Chad little but little as traffic to deal with here Joe Nemechek now he's trying to get back up as with the front there's your separate place turn Rusty Wallace walks that position to get back up front Wallace was thirty third last week at Bristol first race he's finished out of the top he is currently shown at eight here are the left input place car Steve bristling hook number 21 waltrip was leading this race head and the last of the race leaders to pit under the [Music] safety fuel cells of these cars hold 22 gallons of but the fuel pickup cannot all of those 22 gallons so means the team's can go in the range of 100 miles on a tank of gas now we didn't think anybody else but Warburton could make him now remember that Bob EULA body right there at the end mat last caution so those cars there I think that they're going to the cat or not that's different Ned those cars include Jeremy Mayfield David Green Bobby Labonte ken schrader and Bobby Hamilton right here give me sport to running in fair number 26 but I can find out the [Music] [Applause] first rates for the new team but he has come back we of vengeance xxx the Rockingham and then for top-10 finishes two of those great gains for Johnny Benson Ken one year ago the first Texas 500 the big upset Jeff Burton wedding here be the same situation which in Washington today we'll number 88 Dale chair Jeff Burton's just seven points in front of him and they he could make a big jump in the points the Woolmark Martin come through and let's not forget eleven seconds back here comes what could be a caution flag Dave Marcus has lost a motor and Skinner's off into turn number one down the track serpents Dave Marcus was able to get to the outside of the racetrack and not all about the racing surface itself the corner to caution is out and Ken Schrader's may have banged the wall now panda gets a lap back or brick prime - but didn't make as they race the leader back to the caution flag Warburton who stopped with a cut tire earlier unable to gain back on the lead lap you see Chad little going past him to re-establish the order as the pace car picks up the field and the right front is down on Ken Schrader's Andy Petree Chevrolet did he hit the oil or did he run over something cut the tyre did the tire go flat is resulted from heaving the wall or did it they'd run over something I cut it caused him to get into the wall not sure that's a car owner Andy Petree changing the right front tire yeah he's still a good tire changer that's how he came into this business pull out the sheet metal for tire clearance and he's looking to the left for the rest of the field coming around making sure Schrader does not lose another lap [Music] the fuel strategy now has gone out the window yeah we're just fixing to say we're going to see who has a real muscle now adjust to end the lap the left raised to watch 12 cars are on the lead lap and we expect that they will all stop yeah there right now 31 last laps left to go in Texas we'll be right back the Texas 500 is under caution for the seventh time for two incidents that turn out to be unrelated Ken Schrader and Dave Marcus both come to grief here is Schrader turn for right front goes flat hurt into the outside wall coming off turn four and Dave Marcus something happens to his engine apparently as you see all of that smoke as it goes down into turn one he does get it up out of the groove drives it up next to the wall see those cars going by down on the inside the Chad little you race leader right under Marcus there another look here at Marcus's number 71 running and only at second start of the season he's attempted to qualify for each race [Music] and something let's go does a lot of oil of a hot parts of the engine and chassis and a lot of smoke [Music] 29 laps to go CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 will continue after this word from your local station 28 laps to go mark Barton leads Chad little Robert Pressley lined up third the Chevy of Joe Nemechek Dale Jarrett Johnny Benson in Fords Terry Labonte in a Chevy Jimmie Spencer's Ford Bobby Labonte's Pontiac Michael Waltrip Steve Grissom Rusty Wallace are the top 12 and they are the 12 cars on the lead lap as you look over this crowd 200,000 strong and look outside the actual Speedway you see some of the hundred million dollars Bruton spent the spent since building this track in improvements more paved parking spaces than the Magic Kingdom enough gravel roadways around the property to drive to Oklahoma all to help ease the traffic congestion we had here last year and it's working a quarter million dollars in overhead signage on the property for people to pick the correct lane for where they're headed brand-new condominium in turn two and a speedway club to go ride alongside 72 condominiums 66 sold range of 300 to 600 $25,000 and the place just keeps growing right now 150,000 seats and a packed infield we'll be right back - Texas Motor Speedway after this [Music] in celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary CBS Sports coverage of the Texas 500 is sponsored by Texaco a world of energy first plus financial we're working first for you and by Miller Lite who reminds her that anything can happen at Miller time [Music] 25 laps to go what happened on these final pit stops let's start with dick Berggren an awful lot happened on the final pit stops and it may determine the outcome of this race Mike Chad little came in as the leader he came out second he took two tires Mark Martin also took two tires Rusty Wallace gambled and four fresh tires was going to help him but he got caught speeding on pit road and he shoved to the back of the line nail Jarrett took for Robert Pressley took two Nemechek took two as well Ralph what happened near you well dick as you said Dale Jarrett took four tires he was a little loose they went half a pound down on the air pressure on the left side the biggest thing with Dale Jarrett is he wants to get back to green and go racing with four tires he's hoping to wear out the other drivers with just two tires on the car the more yellows the better the advantages for the drivers with two tires bill Stevens Jimmy Spencer came in and took four tires but I gotta tell you the right rear tire was really hammered not a blistering on that tire in fact they took it off the car and spirited away before they did I got a good look at it let me tell you he was running up front and if that tire went Heda picked up the check for the whole day gasps Dale Jarrett has four tires should what should give him an advantage but the disadvantage is going to be see where he is back there and then that line he's on the fifth row outside he has to get by all those lap cars mark Barton's going to be gone before he can get up there here they come we're back [Music] she Pollux J HM little trying to clear Chad little has too [Music] right back on the
