[Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh i think it's safe to say heidi will not be seen on cbs today 30 years after the fact we do know that this one will be seen from start to finish the jets and the colts from the rca dome a look at the standings in the afc east jets tied for the top spot with miami at six and three they are undefeated in the division hi everybody ian eagle along with mark may on paper yes a mismatch but with bill parcells he doesn't take anything for granted and he told us yesterday mark this jets team point blank is not good enough to just walk in and get by on reputation alone well bill parcells knows to go deep into the playoffs you have to have a run game and you have to also win the games that you should win this is one of those games for the new york jets but curtis martin has to have a big game his best is a jet 144 yards against the colts but his last two weeks combined less than 100 yards and less than two yards of rush and if they're going to get to the playoffs and deep into the playoffs they've got to do a better job running the football and the colts have had success against the jets new york has not swept indianapolis since 1986 colts back in that all too familiar role of spoiler and we'll have the kickoff coming up jetson colts from indy after this [Music] back of the rca dome the jets and the colts wrapping up their season series jim morris club one and eight his 12th year as a head coach in the nfl had success in new orleans and understands that this is a work in progress here in indianapolis with a young quarterback and a young team bill parcells second year with the jets this team has destiny in its own hands six and three in the division four and oh in the afc east that six and three record overall looking for their fifth straight win last week impressive showing against buffalo colts have won the toss john hall will kick it off one of the best in the nfl 13 touchbacks this season lamont warren along with aaron bailey warren averaging just under 20 yards a return bailey will be the deep man for the colts and i am with the leg strength of john hall the kicker he's got enough leg strength and distance he could kick it out of the end zone from where he is right now in warm-ups earlier today he was just fooling around out there and he was kicking the ball 65-70 yards jets started last season at six and three as well only to go three and four the rest of the way trying to change that in 1998. bailey will take an e and hall doing his job to start play the indianapolis offense led by peyton manning 18 interceptions that is tops in the nfl but he is the only quarterback in the league to take every snap for his team offensive line the payton protectors youngsters like glenn and mckinney and meadows mixing in with manderich and luenberg marshall has had success against new york and a first and ten from the 20. [Music] manning off of play action and a gain of one on first down the jets were ready defensively and this is the defense that peyton manning will face on the defensive line no not big names but jason ferguson and ernie logan are making names for themselves doing a great job against the run up the middle linebackers of veteran group brian cox stunning a two-year extension with the club otis smith yet to get burned for a touchdown this season [Applause] and if it stands it's one of those plays that indianapolis has to have their offensive coordinator tom moore they really want to emphasize the rush on first and second down and getting marshall faulk positive yardage early in this game holding offense number 78 10 yards remains second down mike carey our referee holding called on tara glenn the second year pro out of california first round pick last season and tara glenn's one of those guys when we talked to jim moore said that he has improved the most as anybody on this offense he's been doing a good job of drive blocking pushing people off the line of scrimmage and here he does a good job of pushing the defender down the field he just falls on him i don't know if that's a holding call for me an offensive lineman can knock a guy five yards off the ball i'll take that every time until they'll back it up second and 19 now from the 11. using the point wide open he couldn't make the connection to marvin harrison [Music] and peyton manning wishes he had that pass back had marvin harrison wide open in the middle of the field a nice deep post pattern by marvin harrison they wanted to use his speed and get him out there here he is on the outside he's going to hit make his move for the post right there and turn and look for the ball he's wide open that's a touchdown if that ball is put to the inside rather than the outside behind manning over through the pass aaron glenn was faked out on the play colts will go with four receivers seven defensive backs for new york on third and 19. manning operating out of the shotgun they've been using that quite a bit this season and the play never gets off flags [Music] delay on the offense five yards third down the stakes mistakes and another penalty against the colts in another holding call that's what's really killed this team it's a very very young football team they have 20 guys on this roster with two years or less experience and particularly on offense so they have three rookies as starters and mistakes has killed this time third and 24 for indy first possession of the game manning has time [Applause] and he's brought down as he crosses the 15-yard line by corwin brown a nine-yard pickup on the pass play and the colts forced to punt with chris gardacki taking the field a marshall falk is their go-to guy he's going to touch the ball more than anyone today leads the team in receiving yards leads the team in receptions and rushing yards he's on pace right now for a thousand yard rushing and thousand yard receiving season and only one other person's done that in the nfl and that's roger correct leon johnson inactive for the game today so dietrich ward will return punts johnson out with that sprained knee good field position for the jets to start off with marcus pollard making the stop on special teams and vinnie testaverdi the top-rated quarterback in the afc after 12 years in this league test of verdi getting noticed the numbers speak for themselves the 15 touchdowns three interceptions what a tremendous ratio parcells has not been happy with the guard play todd berger and matt o'dwyer but they are the starters curtis martin under 100 yards combined in his last two games both though were victories brady in motion on first and ten from the 43. just like one week ago testiverny's first throw at interception it happened against buffalo we'll see what the flag is jason belzer with the int [Applause] it works against new york and the colts will have the football to start this playoff it's a poor fake to the running back curtis martin no one bites on the play fake but it's a great job of reading the play by jason belzer he moved from free safety to strong safety a position he played in college but hadn't played in the last seven years and he did a great job of reading the eyes of quarterback vinnie testaverde belzer's first interception of the season and how about that test of ernie picked off by buffalo last week on his first pass same holds true today manning looking to make something happen on first down what a grab by henderson but it's incomplete the officials say he trapped it jerome pathan the intended receiver great effort by henderson that's as pretty of an effort as you're ever going to want to see but you got to like what jim moore is doing he's going right for the throat on this play they get the turnover and go right for the big play one-handed stab at the ball look at this what a great effort not an interception but a tremendous effort we got blocked off by otis smith on that look at it but it never appeared like he had full control marshall gets the call henderson with a tackle and just like a week ago the jets calling on their defense to stop the opponent they've done a great job of doing that over the course of the last six games they're one of the best in the nfl it's bill belichick he's got great packages he knows how to utilize his talent brian cox uses them inside uses them outside they don't blitz a lot because they don't have to because they play great coverage deep and they get a good pressure by the four guys up front they know how to collapse the pocket marshall faulk has a chance to become the second player in nfl history to produce a thousand yards on the ground and receiving in the same season roger craig the first man to do it for the 49ers [Applause] and that's pretty if you want to see somebody walk a tightrope marshall faulk does a great job of balancing act down the sidelines but they know that they're going to have to go to marshall fall the jets know it the colts know it he's their go-to guy he's the wagon guy hitch him up he's gonna pull the load look at the move he puts on henderson here to the outside now watch him right down the sidelines get the first down tremendous effort by marshall bill parcells talk to us about the skill position players that this colts team has he thinks they're as good as just about anybody in the division but the club is one and eight overall trying to go up the middle ahead to the 20-yard line game tackle there after a pickup of two some words exchanged after the play it'll be second and eight coming up there's some words exchanged after the play you have to know that 51 brian cox from the jets has got to be somewhere close to that problem and he's a guy that truly led this team he's had a checkered pass on the field to play but i'll tell you what as a player he comes up and shows every sunday and they just love it he's been a pro so far this season he's kept his mouth shut and has done most of his talking with his play on the field tauren small checks in as the third receiver for indy on the pitch looking for blockers [Music] [Applause] third and two coming up for indy it's a new little wrinkle for this team they use the tall sweep they pull big glenn out and have him pull and circle the tight ends block and lead it downfield but he's got to get a block to give marshall faulk a direction to go but it's a great play by the indianapolis colts this is what the jets did to the colts in their first meeting this year the judge used that tall sweep and just decimated the coach defense and burned him for over 300 yards rushing three carries 12 yards operating inside the red zone with a third and two motion [Music] [Applause] colts will face a fourth down and the field goal unit comes on to the field and that's the situation on that last play mo lewis blitz and he's hot you're going to see him on the right side blitz the quarterback right here and what he does is he puts no pressure on quarterback peyton manning and his hands in the face that peyton knows he's not blocked he's got to get rid of that ball but your wide receiver on the outside marvin harrison he's got to break free and make a move and he's got to get open instantaneously and he didn't on that play mike van der jack the rookie out of the cfl will attempt a 31-yard field goal trying to get the colts on the board first the kick straight through and indianapolis off of the turnover produces three they take the lead here in the first [Music] deja vu for vinnie testaverdi a week ago he was intercepted by the buffalo bills on his first pass attempt and the same holds true here jason belzer with the pick it leads to a 31-yard field goal for mike vanderjack seven play 19-yard drive and the colts with a three-nothing lead 10-17 to play in the first van der jack kicking off giving chris gardaki a breather today on kickoffs kevin williams and aaron glenn deep this is the rookie williams williams has an opening couldn't break the tackle at the 40-yard line monty montgomery got him low or williams would have been off to the races a 31-yard return jets with strong field position with their second possession when we return to indy colts in front three to nothing [Music] the nfl on cbs is sponsored by southwest airlines proud sponsor of the nfl and official airline of the super bowl chrysler engineered to be great cars and by 10 10 220. [Music] three nothing colts have the lead for the second time today the jets will start out at their own 43-yard line they've done a terrific job in both coverage and returning on kickoffs curtis martin spilled out on his first carry tim houck applying the pressure with tony mccoy the colts defense lots of changes for jim morris team including bernard whittington moving to the outside mccoy and johnson have been the two best defenders for the colts linebackers michael barber andre royal both of those players were not on the roster during the pre-season and a change of safety tim howe getting his first start since 1994 just the fourth start in his nine year career mark looking for an opening and nothing there the colts were once again prepared jeff burris the first man to get there setting up a third and seven from the 46. jeff burris was first to get there but tony mccoy the defensive tackle is growing sideline to sidelines on both those tall sweeps they're having the defensive tackle from the inside follow the play down the line of scrimmage as soon as he sees the balls tossed plus the linebacker player of the colts they have a new different linebacker core than they had the first time now they've got elijah alexander on the outside michael barber on the inside andre royal on the other side and they've got more speed and athleticism at the linebacker position play fake steps remaining on his feet across the 30-yard line everybody knows the jets go to wayne corbett on third down and it doesn't matter he's amazing i'll tell you what on third down he's the guy that's going to get the ball runs a simple crossing pattern goes behind the short zone and vinnie tessa verdi sits in the pocket and just pitches on the ball for the first down but you have to know wayne forbes he's in the slot here he's wide open it's a crossing pattern somebody's got to cover him he's the number one guy to go to if i'm indianapolis i put a guy in him one-on-one in every third down situation this season that leads the nfl martin looking to get on track michael barber was waiting for him time right now for an nfl today report we go to new york at gymnasts all right ayan how about this miami the co-leader with the jets opening drive 92 yards they go they get 56 on the ground by abdul jabar who pokes it across seven nothing let's go back to ion and mark jetson dolphins will certainly be keeping an eye on the scoreboard today both are tied atop the afc east at [Applause] driving ahead to the 20-yard line michael barber again the middle linebacker making the play matt o'dwyer applying the block nice job by the offensive line up front now a lot of penetration there's only four guys on the line of scrimmage but curtis martin's going to feed off his blocks of his right guard and center right there beat a tackle right there and take the ball down the football field that's what they have to do with this jet offense they want to get curtis martin involved but they need to run the ball they have to force the issue they don't want him to cut back they don't want to make two plays like draws on first and second down those are the plays they need to get curtis martin four or five yards of current third and two two tops keith in the game as well [Applause] was it picked off is the question no jeff burris had an opportunity incomplete the indianapolis defense has come to play this afternoon the jets bill parcells was afraid of this game he knows that one and eight he can't overlook this football team and the indianapolis defense is a different defense vinnie testeverity forces this ball he's got one-on-one coverage but it was a great break on the ball by jeff burris that was close to being an interception you hear the fans boo they see it on the replay machine here up on the screen and they think it's an interception but it was a great break on the ball by jeff burns jets though with a chance to tie as that pass was called incomplete john hall 37-yard attempt for hall it's good we're all tied up 3-3 6-39 left first quarter from the rca dog [Music] in a season where just about everything that vinnie testaverti has tried to do has worked he's looked shaky so far in the early going here in indianapolis one of three throwing the football 26 yards one interception and another one that was nearly an interception but the jets and colts are nodded up at three there's a situation where bill parcells challenged him all week and asked him hey vinny what are you going to do when you're challenged in your blitz and they throw different schemes at you how are you going to respond we're going to have an on his opportunity paul the kicker forced to go to the outside and squirrel him out of balance john hall came over to make the hit flag down on the play that was at the end of the play john hall stood here just pushing him out of bounds swung him out of brown and threw him and john hall's not a little guy very physical he's fourth on special teams and tackles personal foul unnecessary roughness a great job of aaron bailey hitting the hole at full speed watch him he's going to take the ball follow his wedge makes one move and bam hit through the hole and go straight down the field make a turn to the outside but here's john hall at the end just push him out of bounds right here let go no he slings him out of bounds hey that's 15 yards makes no sense whatsoever he was already out of bounds and hall just tried to make sure of it and he got caught for it that's bailey's season-long return 44 yards then you tack on the penalty and the jets with a first and ten at the new york 40. [Music] tied at three here in the first quarter [Applause] laying out the block in a six-yard pickup this is what jim moore the head coach wanted to see from this football team wanted to see how they respond over the debacle last week only 57 yards total yards in the first half against miami wanted them to come out with more emotion and they set the temple [Applause] the indianapolis colts a one and eight football team showing some confidence here in the early going but that talent level was there and that's what bill parcells was most concerned about with his team especially play the marshall fox the marvin harrisons and you've got a great quarterback and peyton manning but the offensive line is doing a tremendous job and he really liked tara glenn and he liked the right tackle adam meadows in their second year saying hey these guys can really hit you in the mouth on the line of scrimmage and get movement and they're not playing like second-year players five carries for 23 yards on first down it's manning out of the shotgun fakes the inside handoff sidelined marvin harrison another first down for indianapolis and marvin harrison on the outside watch this move it's just a simple move he's going to press it down the field as soon as the defensive back turns his shoulders boom makes his head to the outside look at the catch right there on the sidelines first down had possession of it when he hit the ground both feet boom boom what a great catch by marvin harrison peyton manning so far four of seven 30 yards harrison comes out of that class of 1996 of receivers keyshawn johnson included in that group the first overall pick that season first and ten from the 18. attack the jets had an opportunity to bring him down early in the play rick lyle missed it instead the play goes for 11 yards you talk about sweet feet in the backfield and breaking tackles marshall fall gets hit in the backfield and watch the feet of marshall faulk here he's going to get hit it's a draw play lyle has him stops on a dime moves to his right plants again and turns up field then starts taking it to the sidelines what a great job by marshall faulk that's determination of not being stopped in the backfield that's his sixth rush 34 yards in the first quarter first and goal from the seven thought just keeps turning the feet as it gets it inside the five marshall fox on pace to have an outstanding season something that hasn't been done in an awful long time and only one person's done it roger craig right there thousand yards rushing thousand yards receiving he's on that pace in addition mark he really came across as a veteran he's a young man 25 years old but with all the younger players on this team he's understood his role has changed from last year to this year it's like the old analogy it's not the age it's the mileage he came out of college at 20. this is his fifth year he's got a lot of miles under his belt second and goal from the floor manning plenty of time aaron glenn was all over it good concentration by small and small one over the top for this touchdown this place has erupted and we talked to jim moore yesterday said hey we need more veteran leadership in there we're going to get torrent small involved well they do right off the bat goes over the top for the reception and just takes it away from aaron glenn tremendous catch by torrent small third touchdown of the season for small the extra point from vanderjack this is not what the new york jets expected 10-3 colts have the lead here in the first [Music] the nfl on cbs is sponsored by nasa max and by pizza home of the stuffed crust pizza the most fun you can have with a pizza peyton manning touchdown pass to torres small to give the colts a 10-3 lead with 325 to play in the first they watch tayden he's going to get pressure here and it's supposed to be a bang bang play watch peyton manning he's supposed to be a quick play he's going to hit this he wants to hit the slate right there it's not there feels the pressure rolls to his right to make something happen creating a new pocket but watch terence small go over the top right there over the top of aaron glenn and make the touchdown reception kickoff from vanderjack [Music] [Applause] a 22-yard return the colt and their fans juiced up here at the rca though 10-3 indianapolis [Music] coming up tomorrow on cbs doctors aren't supposed to give into temptation but ted danson is being put to the test don't miss the new hit comedy becker tomorrow on cbs curtis martin gets the carry on first down todd berger providing the block and a gain of 10. jeff burris the tackle nice job by the offensive line and creating a seam on the right side for curtis martin to hit he hit the hole hard cleanly and turn it up to the outside the jets attack the colts in their first meeting this year by putting pressure on the outside at the defensive end position the offensive tackle position and outside of that on their sweeps and that's where they got a ton of yards against this indianapolis colts defense they'll bring out the sticks see if it was enough for the first down [Music] not quite just a little bit short it will be second in inches coming up for new york but he did seem concerned about this matchup you look on paper you say well what's the big deal the colts can't beat anybody their loan victory against san diego this season but parcells seemed a bit concerned yesterday when we spoke with him well this talent on this team particularly offensively with the colts and he's been in this situation before the jets have played at such a high level the past four and five weeks they play teams with winning records teams that are hoping to go to the playoffs all of a sudden in the back of the player's mind they see the colts at one and eight and he knows psychologically that he's going to have to keep this team at a high level for this team because indianapolis always plays well at home regardless of their record at one and eight they play every opponent tough at home it all began for vinnie testaverti against this colts team week three testa verdi getting a start for the first time in the jets uniform glenn foley injured at that time now he's cemented as the number one guy brady in motion second in inches inside handoff keith byers first down to the 45. uh nine yard gain for the fullback and it's just excellent blocking brady kyle brady coming in motion a quick hand off to keith byers there's no one out there he just plows straight ahead if he has his eyes open he could have gone for 10 or 12 more but keith baier second carry of the season he's mr utility for this team he's a leader on the offense leader in the locker room 13th season he can go on and on and on in plays in magnificent condition and what he's asked to do he does a tremendous job at it he blocks reads well a great short yard situation originally gerald soul was the starter at fullback byers has supplanted him test of ernie it'll dump off for martin and a modest gain on first down as the colts sniffed it out tony mccoy the first man to get there and then a host of tacklers in on the play tony mccoy has been sidelined to sideline in this entire first quarter he hasn't stopped what a motor on this guy talking to bill parcells he said the three big guys on their defense the indianapolis colts we have to worry about ellis johnson tony mccoy the two defensive tackles and jason belzer the strong safety movie from freezing keep in mind leon johnson not available for the jets inactive today because of that strained knee that he suffered two weeks ago against kansas city on the pitch vermont and he is met by jason at the 49-yard line jason bell's a really nice honestly watch right here here's brady watch the block he's gonna make coming in motion coming down the line of scrimmage they're moving him around to get penetration for the offensive line to create a scene for him look at him block four or five six yards down the line of scrimmage i'll tell you what cal brady's been magnificent the last few weeks catching passes blocking putting them in motion doing different things and moving that tight end around to create a different look for the defense alex van dyke checks in five receivers for the jets johnson the motion man on a third and six quick throw and the catch made at the sideline richie anderson second reception of the season and a first down for new york nice job by anderson of coming back for the ball squad and getting by the first down marker just enough comes by look at him squad he's going to sit here's the pass he's got to go back a step to get it and bend down low to get a great job of concentration by richie anderson final seconds of the first quarter anderson really has not been involved much this season yet to carry the football and now just his second touch of the 98 campaign end of the first quarter 10-3 colts letting the jets will return to indy after this message [Music] back at the rca dome i and eagle along with mark may 10-3 the colts have the advantage as we start play in the second quarter jets with a first and ten at the indianapolis 44. the play never gets off flags come down movement by the jets you just have been fantastic before the snap fall start offense number 19. five yards remain first down that one's on keyshawn johnson nine the jets have been fantastic in the second quarter i mean you know we used to call this the m quarter the momentum quarter this is where you you put the pressure on the the opposition and score more points to them so when you're going at half time you got the lead and you go into halftime with all the momentum and the jets do a tremendous job of putting up the points in the second quarter they've outscored their opponents 70-43 in the second quarter the colts with only 25 points this season in the second [Applause] jets trailing by seven now with the first and 15 to start playing the second quarter on the dump that flag comes down martin with a cut curtis martin breaks to the open field for the touchdown nine that's coming back madel dwyer in the center of the offensive line he's the right guard he's going to be called for holding on that play tackle tony mccoy from the back and this is unlike bill parcells team to make mistakes like this holy offense [Applause] [Music] we talked about tony mccoy before he's been a handful in the interior line the defensive tackle from the colts beat matt o'dwyer and you're going to keep an eye on number 70 at the right guard position matt o'dwyer he's up there he is over there and tony mccoy's across from he beats him to the outside right here now he's got to hold him he's got to let go he's wrestling to the ground hey that's a clear holding call once he gets to the outside you've got to let go bill parcells has not been content with the guard play he was toying with the idea of activating doug karzewski and alex bernstein a pair of rookies both are inactive so he put his faith in burger and odwire and o'dwyer with a costly error a 49-yard touchdown pass brought back martin on the ground [Applause] and i talked about that before the outside speed of the linebackers on the outside keep an eye on them they're not the same linebackers that just face the first time royale gets penetration up field more speed by these linebackers out of the colts the second time around facing the jets but it's the penetration upfield by andre royal and there's another linebacker elijah alexander from the other side topping the play off but these guys will not let the jets get to the edge and circle the defense gents moving in the wrong direction a second and 29 airing it out with a catch touchdown jets [Applause] that's just staying with your wide receiver tribette runs straight down the field splits both defenders both of them look at each other and quebec goes right between both defenders on the outside jeff burris and jason belzer split them down the middle and both of them looked at one another to the right of screen watch vinnie he's going to have a play action pass to curtis martin he's just going to wing it out to quebec look at him splits right between them nobody covers wayne krabat on the play an easy play for the new york jets that's just blown coverage by the indianapolis colts 63 yards as hall adds the extra point the longest reception of the season for wayne grebet his fourth touchdown and just like that we're tied at 10. [Music] two catches 89 yards for wayne corbett including the 63-yard touchdown the longest td score of krabet's career and what a career it's turning into it was big plays the first meeting between these two teams that really killed the indianapolis colts and they just have to eliminate the big plays to stay with the new york jets because the jets are just taking it right to the colts when it comes time for a big point chris hetherington on the return and that play just quieted down this colts crowd in situations where it's second and third long someone's got a match up with wayne crevette here both defenders did not even look at him they looked at each other and he split the defense straight down the field wayne corbett he's a magician when it comes to those long plays of second and third and long i match him up i put my best defender my best one-on-one guy out there on him either tyrone cool or jeff burris should always mirror wayne [Music] tied up 10-10 marshall brought down quickly brian cox firing in on that play a gain of maybe one on first down that's a nice job of brian cox just filling his gap filling his whole area not letting the running back marshall falk hit the hole and he came up and gave marshall falk a good stick colt's tied with washington and carolina for the worst record in the nfl they've suffered four straight defeats jets have won four in a row and remain undefeated in the division bootleg off the play action incomplete had jerome pathan in stride aaron glenn able to get it on the play and jar the ball loose and that's a nice job by aaron glen of timing this defensive play down the ball is in the air should be a reception right there as soon as he touches the ball that's aaron glenn putting his arms around the wide receiver and stripping him of the ball jerome patham right there as soon as he touches the ball the defenders if you're close enough grab the arms and strip the arms jim looking for more consistency from pathan and his other rookie receiver e.g green [Music] third and nine for the colts seven defensive backs for the jets get it off before the play clock ran out [Applause] we'll see where they spot the football not quite enough for the first down ken dilter was a weapon in the past but they hadn't used much this season here quarterback peyton manning rolls out to his right but they need to get ken diller more involved in this offense he's a great receiver but protecting peyton manning he's been involved in pass protection schemes the entire year chris garcia the putter averaging over 44 yards per pump this season dedrick ward waiting for the jets and his own 16. fair catch signal made [Applause] chance will have the football when we return to the rca dome tied at 10 in the second the nfl on cbs is sponsored by the all-new honda odyssey it's one big happy minivan the united states marine corps the change is forever and my first union your guide to the financial world [Music] the indianapolis colts trying to play that role of spoiler as they're tied with the jets 10 10 12 15 to play here in the first half jets have the football a first and ten from the 18. that's the verdi under some heat able to find keyshawn johnson with a sideline route and a first down for new york 22 yards through the air i like the way that the jets are using cal brady in motion but here keyshawn johnson from the outside keith byers is going to clear the corner back out here he's at the bottom of the screen he clears that section out so keyshawn can run his out pattern great throw by vinnie chester area dropping that ball in here where keyshawn johnson can catch him johnson and crevette turning into quite a tandem and if you toss him diedrich ward the deep threat as the third receiver jets are dangerous throwing the football first and ten from the 40. mr verdi he's got the first down into indianapolis territory and lots of room to work with for gravette after he makes the catch well they had the empty backfield where nobody was in the backfield line and it's five wide receivers look at that there's no one back there you gotta match up on the outside or call timeout krebetz on the right side makes a move inside hints on the inside knocks the linebacker down and comes to the outside what a move by krebet they've got to find somebody that can match up one on one with wayne corbett or he's going to kill the colts the rest of the afternoon trivette with his fifth career 100 yard receiving game three catches 104 yards testaverde's numbers now picking up after that interception to start play from jason belzer buyers lined up as a tight end martin tripped up as he crosses the 40-yard line good pickup on first down and now the jets offensive line creating some holes for martin to work with well not only that iron they're moving the line of scrimmage that's what they hadn't been able to do thus far in the game they're pushing the defenders back and that's giving curtis martin a two-way go he can cut it inside or outside on that play took it to the outside but that's when they had the most successful those big defensive tackles jumbo elliott and jason favini can get on the defensive end and get a push on him it gives curtis martin a two-way go eight-yard burst on first down a second and two from the 37. floats one out to the sideline johnson is there keyshawn johnson great catch on the sideline tyrone poole with the coverage outstanding concentration the maturity and the development of keyshawn johnson keep an eye on him and watch his hands at the end of this play he's got to get a push off there but watch just before the pass comes look at his hand he's going to get a push off right there and go for the ball but that's growing up as a wide receiver those are some of the tactics that big time wide receivers use that little push-up right there allowed him to get the separation from the quarterback tyrone poole for the first down did you think it was a catch though was the knee dragging on the sideline i thought he had position that was that was a great fake tester [Applause] and bill parcells isn't happy about that this is a gimme look at straight in the middle of the screen baxter's in the back of the end zone you're supposed to tippy toe get in front of the line there's no one next to him he's already in the end zone watch his left foot right there he's out he's out again there's no one look at that no blue jerseys around him he's got a ton of room to get open and bill parcells look at him he's not happy because he knows that was a gimmick baxter will go to the sideline it was a great call by the coaching staff no points to show for it second and goal mark stutterstep able to spin his way down to the two-yard line ellis johnson able to get him low it'll be third and goal coming up from the two this is the area where the new york jets have had problems when they had to mash it and play smash mouth football in the goal line in red area and right here curtis martin does a great job of stutter stepping and going around the block but they have been they have not been able to press the issue just take the ball right off the tackle and smash it into the end zone and that's what bill parcells wants to see from this offensive unit martin three rushing touchdowns this season gerald soul has checked into the game for new york [Applause] what a break for new york fred baxter heads up in the backfield to recover the loose ball michael barber jarred it loose tessa verdi under some heavy heat after taking the snap and he does a great job of timing this look at michael barber in the middle no one touches them curtis martin ducks his head you've got to see him to hit him and michael barber does a tremendous job of coming straight through the middle going after the quarterback's arm and knocking that ball out of there john hall is on for the 40-yard field goal attempt he hit from 37 yards earlier got it and the jets have their first lead of the day they don't get the touchdown they settle for three 13-10 in new york the jets with a three-point lead 831 to play in the second quarter the nfl comes alive on cbs sports line log on to the players chat thursday night 9pm eastern chat live with jaguar's quarterback mark brunell at cbs.sportsline aaron bailey awaits the kick from john hall 13-10 new york bailey from the six brought down shy of the 30-yard line by dwayne gordon on special teams a 23-yard return for bayley tomorrow on cbs is raymond a prisoner in his own marriage that's the big question find out as king of queen star kevin james drops in on everybody loves raymond it's all part of shameless crossover monday right here on cbs [Music] colts with a first and ten at the 29-yard line they had a 10-3 lead they now trail 13-10 play-action manic fires a pass to harrison across the 30-yard line not much of a gain through the air on first down what makes this play go is the fake to marshall faulk they have to respect him here's brian cox reading the play he's going to drop back he sees it's a play-action pass but he had to step up first he's going to get there and make the tackle but he would like to get there a lot earlier but that's great determination on a linebacker going across the field and getting beaten and suckered in on the fake the running back marshall fall on [Music] brian cox makes the tackles it's not just a tackle he makes something happen on attack he doesn't want to just tackle the guy he wants to really impose hurt and pain on a running back and let them know that hey if you're going to come in my territory you're going to pay the price not enough for the first down it'll be third and one time ticking away coming up on seven minutes to play in the second quarter double tight end set with dildor and pollard heatherington in the backfield gets the call and he's got the first down [Applause] the thing about marshall faulk that i like not only is catch receiving ability he'll line up and slot the one wide receiver pattern to line up in the backfield and carry the ball of course but when it's short yardage and goal line a lot of times you'll give it to a fullback they don't have a fullback today they're going to use marshall faulk he's going to touch the ball about 45 times today adam meadows was slow to get up and now the medical staff from indianapolis comes out onto the field meadows the second year pro out of georgia second round pick in 97. played left tackle last season now playing right tackle waverly jackson will come in to replace him when meadows is ready to get off the field and that's going to hurt this offensive line he's playing at a very high level second year in the nfl and here's a guy that started left tackle last year moved to right tackle and they really thought and they think and they know that he's got a bright future ahead of him but whenever you can get a young player to respond in the nfl in the second year that's a great draft we'll step aside with 6 45 left first half 13 to 10 jets the nfl on cbs is sponsored by the new 1999 tl luxury performance pick 2 and by the nasdaq mx market group the market of markets back in indianapolis 13 to 10 new york has the lead with 6 45 to play in the second quarter adam meadows appears to be okay he's walking on his own on the sideline replaced by jackson on a first and ten manning throwing to the sidelines they're calling that a catch marshall coming out of the backfield brian cox was in on the coverage here you're going to see in the front of the screen tony manders pulls to the left and blocks out on anthony pleasant brian cox has marshall flock one on one he does a great job of coverage but there's no way he's going to hang one on one with marshall fox one of the best receiving running backs out of the backfield in the nfl 71 straight games for marshall faulk with at least one reception second longest streak to start a career behind kellen winslow cox with another tackle brian's doing a little bit of john out there he's doing a great job he's just mirroring marshall faulk wherever marshall going there's brian cox and he's getting everybody fired up you got to love brian cox you got to play linebacker nfl you got to be mean and brian cox is a mean linebacker he's the only guy i knew that applauded when mike tyson bit evander hollyfield's ear off for part of his ear off and he loved that got five tackles already this afternoon and there he is blitzing through making the tackle and telling marshall fog i made that he applauded he applauded he gotta love that stuff you know this for a fact lineman and linebackers yeah [Applause] that's a nifty job by otis smith jerome pathan just falls down here it is one on one with otis smith jerome payson has to get up if you're going to fall down oda smith running for him stride for stride he makes his cut right here he's got to fall he's going to get his foot stepped down but otis smith stays with the ball stays with the ball he gets his feet tangled up with smith but odor smith is a veteran enough he's been playing and nothing long enough to know to keep your eyes on that ball you can make a big point inadvertent contact is that what you think oh they were just got their legs mixed up stepped down sometimes that happens it's not intentional and they're going to let them play and that happens on the outside 20th career interception for smith off the turnover martin first [Music] and a pickup of five to five minutes left in the second jets lead at 13 to 10 after an inauspicious start new york has bounced back quite nicely martin and buyers in the backfield that's brady in motion on second down chester off of play action jackson breaks out of the would-be tackler and into colts territory tyrone poole may have gone for the ball and forgot about the man and this is a job of a big man going against a little bag and you little man using his body look at the turn right there just shields him off with his body tyrone poole does not have a chance on this play kishon johnson has stepped it up another level he keeps getting better each and every week and that's just a great play using your body against a small defender three catches 73 yards for johnson and a first intent at [Music] [Applause] getting back to the line of scrimmage time now for an nfl today report as we head to new york and gymnasts all right ayan along with the jets one of the hottest teams in pro football the tennessee oilers and steve mcnair has given him the lead now he connects with willie davis for the touchdown and it's now 10-7 with 329 before halftime back to you tennessee oilers a couple of weeks ago they knocked off pittsburgh it's giving them some momentum [Music] and the oilers and jets will meet in nashville next week [Music] [Applause] yard line enough for a new york first down and curtis martin does a good job of moving his feet in the hole watch him he's going to juke and jive it's a nice little draw play good lead block by keith byers right there but watch the moves avoids two tackles right there and just takes the ball straight ahead and tries to run over tim hopkins the big block thrown by keith byros was enabling curtis martin to get through the hole and get positive yards past the line of scrimmage he wasn't touched until he was six seven yards down field he got off to a slow start here today now 12 carries 46 yards martin had 144 yards in the first meeting going up the middle he's a workhorse bill parcells has been questioned about that using martin as much as he has no leon johnson today gerald's soul would then be the backup running back and parcells now sees seoul more as a rudder as opposed to a fullback when he acquired him from green bay [Applause] one more play before the two minute warning [Applause] second and eight testing [Applause] and that ball was thrown just a little bit by wayne corbett here he is in motion plants goes downfield makes his move and the balls throw him right behind him he's got to go over his opposite shoulder but that's a ball wayne quebec usually comes down two-minute warning here in indy 13-10 the jets in front jets with a three-point lead a minute 59 to play in the first half here at the rca though connie mandarins getting a little breeze his team trailing 13-10 jets third and eight and the receiver fell down there's the flag michael barber appears to be the guilty party see michael barber on that flight look at wayne quebec it was a wrestling takedown move michael barber gets up and looks around who me he didn't think it was him he looked around and he got away with it for about five seconds and the flags start flying in from each and everywhere holy defense number 53 automatic first down that's when the acting skills really come into play oh you've got to be a thespian here now you're going to see barbara here i think that's him right on the outside there watch quebec come across he's got to hold him there look at the takedown move oops grab ahold of the jersey take him right down but at the end of the play michael barber looks around not me wasn't me with that in mind i have a feeling that you were an olivier i wasn't bad i never got called for holding at least in my mind about 10 times in career if you're going to listen to your quotes to check the record books yeah that's the ticket minute 55 to play first half jets get the first down off of the penalty martin bouncing to the outside for another new york first down very close to the marker curtis martin's got to thank tim howe the free safety from the indianapolis colts on this play because he gets a block on the defender here's curtis martin trying to make a move he's almost tackled in the backfield a nice cut to his outside right here now right there look at number 50 he's got a hold of him elijah alexander but he gets picked off by his own man tim howe and curtis martin takes advantage of it and takes it down for you [Music] they'll spot it just shy of the first down even less than second and one second in inches in motion brainy fires straight up the gun inside the 10-yard line and a new set of downs for new york to work with coming up the nasdaq amex halftime report jim nats marcus allen brent jones and george seifert will get you caught up on all the scores and highlights plus a preview of the franklin templeton shark shootout final round that's all coming up on the nasdaq amex halftime report down to a minute 20 and counting first [Music] this time the colts were ready for it buyers is bottled up by tony mccoy along with tim howe keith pires that's his third carry this afternoon and he only went into the game with one run so they're calling out his number a lot but it's a straight ahead block right here just a full back dive in the middle of the field keith byers forces the initials in this issue and slams it right in the middle of the pack pickup of two under a minute left now first half tenth play of the drive fires this time lines up as a tight end on a second and goal prevented motion [Applause] happy about this here he is in motion keyshawn's going to the outside gives a hint a push-off right there on pulp but poole had a little hand on him corvette's turning around looking for the flag no flag i think the officiating crew is doing a good job of letting these guys play today [Applause] nearly intercepted by blackman keyshawn johnson in double coverage [Applause] and parcells will send out john hall for the field goal attempt robert blackman should have had this interception but keyshawn johnson forces his hands and his arms through at the end of the play to knock that ball out right there it's in his hands but keyshawn's right on the plane this should be an interception vinnie with a play-action fake forces that ball in there and right there it's in robert blackman's hands no question that's got to be picked off hall is two of two already there's a 25-yard attempt for hall splits the uprights john hall has been perfect on the day three of three and the jets extend their lead 16-10 with 22 seconds to play in the second quarter as mentioned the nasdaq amex halftime report will be coming up momentarily the crew back in new york will get you caught up on all the highlights and scores from around the nfl plus we'll have that preview of the franklin templeton shark shootout final round that's scramble format mark all coming up on the nasdaq amex halftime report and that's when i'm at my best when i play golf i've got to be a scrambler if it's best ball and i have to play my own i'm not going in those tournaments i think you're just scrambling to find your ball when you play golf i'm the only guy that goes on the golf course i probably got five times more balls than i do clubs in my bag and it's just in case and i'll tell you what i'm i'm not going to play fair i'll tell you that right now sometimes you should get together oh no no i'll i'll take a pass on that thank you but the colts nothing seems to go right for them talking to peyton manning yesterday and that last interception it should have been an easy pick he said hey if a ball is going to be tipped we're almost assured we're not coming down with it it's just been that type of thing it's going to happen when you're 1-8 paul kicks it off bailey will take a knee coming up tuesday on cbs jag officers fight for justice this week one of their own will be accused of a horrible crime don't miss the trial of the century an all new jag tuesday on cbs [Music] competitive football game and bill parcells talked about it yesterday in our meeting with him and you know you feel like just kind of touching him on the side of the shoulder and saying come on now level this you think you're gonna blow this team out right he won't give you that kind of nugget oh he was absolutely right he knew this team they would fight and scrap and they haven't given up in any other games manning on first down brought in by pathan jerome pathan out of bounds at the 39-yard line with 15 seconds left first half a 19-yard pass play it's one of the things about this offense and jerome payton and the youth of this offense you'll come up with big plays because of the athletic ability but the experience is in there and they'll make mistakes on reads make mistakes on routes but they'll give you a play like this that just makes you want to drool saying the abilities there for our players to make big plays nathan has shown glimpses this season his 28th catch of the year both teams with three timeouts remaining only 15 ticks of the clock left that's now manic tried to flip and nearly cost his team dearly mo lewis had a chance that was ugly that was one of those plays that you really don't want to run it started with a snap it was a little shotgun snap peyton's got to go down to get it now he's going to try to make a big play the rush is upfield he's got nowhere to go and he just loses the ball i think that's a funnel i don't think that's an incomplete pass because his arm wasn't going forward it was just a pick the he just tried to pop that ball in front of marshall falkland now that's one of those things that the cults are living with that's growing people because the reward is not greater than the risk not at all and they know that this is going to bear fruit down the road but it's just patience now final seconds manning on a scramble holds on to the football and runs out did time run out yes it did end of the first half they may put a second on both teams were ready to run to their respective locker rooms in fact some players are being brought back and parcels is high rate and that's nothing new in this situation by bill parcells but like i said about this indianapolis colt team they will not give up peyton manning makes a wise decision heads to the sidelines here's our clock in the bottom right there's one second left on the clock great job by the officiating crew they've been on top of everything the entire game so the colts will get another crack at it they're going to try a field goal 64-yard attempt this would be an nfl record jason elam tied the nfl record last season [Applause] now it's 63. mike vanderjet definitely has the leg to make this this is to tie the record 63-yard attempt from vandergen it's up and well short returning it aaron glenn remaining on his feet glenn [Applause] do you believe that [Applause] now that was incredible that's poor coaching and poor hustle by the field goal protection team your talk if that ball is kicking it short you go down and cover it and make sure it's down for the indianapolis colts they didn't do that they watched it they stood around but the jets took advantage of the situation and they did not give up on this play look at the guys stand around in the back watch it okay it's no good let's go into halftime let's just jog over to the sidelines no but aaron glenn's smart enough to pick it up and say hey i'm not giving up on this play i know i can make something happen these guys look at the block and he gets downfield one there at the end of the play watch he has any pleasant boom right there at the end of the play smart play by aaron glenn i mean a tremendous play by aaron incredible 104 yards you just don't see that well you know it's coaching and i said it goes back to coaching it does you have to cover this kick it's not a dead ball it's still alive aaron glenn's smart enough to pick it up and make something happen but he gets great blocking downfield you see the guy falling on the ground right there that's anthony pleasant getting the block wearing cox out in front leading them and parcells has got to be happy about this look at this he's saying hey that's me over coaching my special teams and making sure they know what to do each and every play from one moment where the jets are content just going to the locker room hoping that time ran out to the next moment where the jets are celebrating a touchdown what a turn of events here at the rca doll and that's definitely picking up the motivation iron they go into halftime with a big time lift over the indianapolis colts that's hard to believe 23-10 end of the first half the nasdaq amex halftime report will be coming up jets with the lead how do you describe it after a word from your local station [Music] back at the rca dome 23-10 the new york jets leading the indianapolis colts at halftime iron eagle along with mark may and one of the most bizarre endings to a first half that you will ever see mike van der jack attempting a record-tying 63-yard field goal only to have aaron glenn return it now the field goal almost acts as a punt unless it goes out of the end zone which it did not he came up well short glenn knew it was a live ball and jets took advantage of it absolutely but smart play by the new york jets let's take a look at bill parcells he's coaching his team on the field get back he's telling aaron glenn here him get back he's going to kick it deep get back and he's pointing to him and there's parcells just saying hey i'm coaching you guys pay attention here's the kick here's glenn moving back there he is right there listening to head coach bill parcells and watch the kick and i want you to watch the line of the colts i'll tell you these guys if you look at this they're not paying attention bill parcells has his team in the right place at the right time but the culture standing at the line of scrimmage and not covering the kick you have to cover the kick if it's not downed or not kicked out of the end zone it is a live ball like a punt here's the kick they're going to kick it down aaron glenn is smart enough to feel this ball and go with it now look at all the blue jerseys way up at the top and look at all the white jerseys that are down there helping them block the blue jerseys are just standing around the white jerseys are going and seeking blocks and look at the blocks right there nail pepper johnson just knocks somebody down bobby hamilton down the field and here's brian cox look at him leading him down the field getting the chip on the kicker i mean that's just smart play on and you have to give a great deal of credit to aaron glenn who didn't speed up and just tried to look for the first opening and take it down the sideline aaron glenn used the field correctly saw that there was a wave of blocking to his left took advantage of that it is the longest return off of a field goal miss in nfl history al nelson had the previous long philadelphia eagles back in 1971 and you know the added element to all of this mark is that the jets were ready to just walk off the field peyton manning stepped out of bounds with just a fraction of a second left on the clock and the jets take advantage of a play that really most teams would probably just fall on the ball and end the first half in that fashion instead they get a touchdown and i think that goes back to one coaching bill parcells a very well coached team and two the key element the veterans these guys have been around long enough and they've been through a lot of scenarios like this where they're used to the situation where a lot of the colts are young players they haven't been in this scenario before it was a 16-10 lead prior to that play now the jets in front 23-10 and vanderjack to kick it off [Music] aaron glenn from the goal line and glenn is twirled down at the 20-yard line ray mcelroy making the tackle [Music] halftime numbers jets got off to a very slow start including on the first play from scrimmage for new york a vinnie testaverde interception jason belzer with the pick but testaverde picked it up 166 yards passing in that first half manning with 79 he did have the one touchdown toss to torrent small during the return illegal block in the back on the return team number 58 10 yards first down james ferrier last season's number one draft pick for the jets eighth overall out of virginia and that's one of those mistakes the jets don't want to start off in a hole in the second half they've got the momentum after that big play going in at halftime they want to retain the momentum in the second half but you know ridiculous penalties on kick returns right off the bat they don't help their calls i don't know if you can have more momentum after that kind of play and there's only there's less than a second on the clock and all of a sudden parcells was angry at the time because he thought the half was over he wanted to go in all sudden boom they get their hip return and it's gone they had to call players back from their respective locker rooms first down just shy of the tank curtis martin cutting it back and moving ahead to the 13-yard line tony mccauley with the tackle three-yard pickup on first half the only way the colts can come back from that adversity they face just before halftime is to make the jets go three and out here they need those tackles like big tony mccoy in the middle of the field to make big plays stop curtis martin on first and second down and put him in a third and four plus or third and five plus situation and come up with a big play defensively and get good field position that's the only way to retain momentum in the second half four yard average so far for martin on the ground 15 carry 60 yards colts give up 4.7 yards per run and now curtis martin running with some consistency here this afternoon jason belzer and michael barber collaborating on the stop nice job at the left side of the line todd berger turning his man inside jumbo elliott turning his man outside there's nobody left there curtis martin gets five yards before he's touched michael barber has to grab him around the ankles to bring him down to the stomach another new york first down keyshawn johnson laying out a block and johnson will talk quite a bit about his blocking skills he's proud of him he's doing a tremendous job that's one of the areas where he's really risen his level up and above more than the average wide receiver straight ahead for martin bertrand berry making the tackle martin getting across the 25-yard line four-yard pickup on first down spreading it around most of his runs though have been up the gun martin who had a string of four straight 100 yard performances up until a couple of weeks ago against kansas city and then buffalo combined he fell short of 100 yards in the two games brady the motion man [Music] this is bill parcells football get the lead and just use as much clock as possible via the ground bill parcels is a master protecting league at the top of the screen watch 95 he gets blocked by the tight end kyle brady and they've been putting kyle brady in motion the entire day long they'll bring him down the block out of the slot they'll bring him down to pastor tech he'll bring him down to run routes in the middle of the field and he's been instrumental in this game plan hasn't caught a lot of balls today but he's all over the field making things happen four plays so far here in the third quarter for the jets all four have been to martin nobody in the backfield on this first and ten from the 37. airing it out for keyshawn johnson jumps the football and takes a lick [Applause] [Music] jason belzer [Applause] and tim houck involved and this is the ball keyshawn johnson should have had it's in his hands right there he's open he's by the defender he's covered by a middle linebacker elijah alexander and he beats him but he can't bring the ball down and all the blue jerseys converge around keyshawn johnson but they got exactly what they wanted they put keyshawn in motion brought him back from fake motion and got him one-on-one with the linebacker he did his job he beat him but he just needs to come down with that [Music] now a reception and 10. in motion brady three receivers deep drop for test of hurting trying to go over the middle ellis johnson getting involved stops the clock with 11 59 to play in the third first possession of the second half that's a nice job by ellis johnson a defensive tackle of reading this screen video testimony drops back curtis martin just hides in there it's a little middle screen but there's johnson right there johnny on the spot to knock that ball loose there is this unpredictable nature for the jets both offensively and defensively and it's been part of the reason why they've had so much success you just don't know what to expect from them on either side of the ball third and 10. the puck loses the football as it is [Applause] it's just as you said you don't know what to expect out of this jet team it's almost feast or famine it's big play or it's a mistake and that was a great pass rush by the defense of the indianapolis colts but watch vinnie test a very smart play he gets nailed from the backside but he's smart enough to come up with this football and bert berry gets a stick on him and knocks the ball loose but vinnie disparity comes back with a football john kidd whose job is in serious jeopardy his first punt bailey the return out to the 43-yard line 39-yard punt 13-yard return colts football when we come back 23-10 jets in front with 11 28 left in the third quarter colts with their first possession of the second half marshall fought [Applause] getting close to midfield to the 48th we talked about the colts not catching breaks here was a missed opportunity mark mike vinnie tessa very the ball gonna hit right there and bounce right back to vinnie tessa verde and we talked to the colts and peyton manning said it doesn't matter where it bounces it's not going to bounce to us as indianapolis colton when teams are winning good things happening lux on your side and right there good bounce for the jets and right and then he tested very smoothly we talked about the unpredictable nature defensively a lot of it has to do with that man bill belichick long count for manning crossing into jets territory and moving across the marker for a first down indianapolis winning with defense 6-1 over their last seven games and the numbers play that point out only allowing 13 points per contest now obviously keep in mind in the first two games san francisco and baltimore did a tremendous job offensively since again the defense has done the trick and belichick who is the heir apparent to bill parcells if bart sells decides to hang it up after two three years may get some falls about a head coaching job this off season that's the kind of job he's done for new york and i think he definitely deserves it i think the first time around when you're a head coach you go through a lot of growing pains he did in cleveland i think he learned a lot from the situation but you know talking to moe lewis the other day he's saying the one thing about bill belichick and his defense is once he finds out what you can do and if you can do more he'll let you do more if you can do more than that he'll let you do more than that he'll keep giving you more and more to do with his defense and expands the defense right to the knowledge to the brink of your knowledge as a player and i think that's tremendous as a player he'll let you do just about anything you can do as long as it fits in the scheme second and eight after the two-yard gain for marshall thought manic deep drop wobbly pass intended for harrison james ferrier was applying some pressure in the backfield [Music] and no one touched james ferrier to the top of the screen peyton manning doesn't have a chance he's hot on the outside no one blocks him peyton manning's back his turn he knows he's got to get rid of the ball right there good job of just throwing the ball away but that's a heck of a stick put on peyton manning by james faryon colts will go with a four receiver look as eg green checks in the rookie this is third and eight manning checking off out of the shotgun inside handoff and the jets stack him up at the 45-yard line and you hear the booze in the background corwin brown did a nice job of sniffing that play out not only corwin brown but the guys in the middle of the defensive line for the jets did a good job of stuffing the hole that's what defensive tackles do they don't make the tackle but they'll stuff the hole up front and they'll keep the offensive lineman on the line of scrimmage and carl hanson right there does a great job of stuffing the offensive linemen allowing everyone else to converge on the top the punt from gardaki fair signal made by he lost the football and again the jets retain possession [Music] dedrick ward filling in for the injured leon johnson just did not bring it in cleanly they say catching a punt is one of the hardest things to do i could never catch one but we know that that doesn't make it hard 23-10 jets [Music] what are you going nuts at it was it was the nfl on cbs is sponsored by southwest airlines proud sponsor of the nfl and official airline of the super bowl mitsubishi motors the all-new 1999 galot wake up and drive and by the united states postal service the colts going the conservative route here in the third quarter trailing 23-10 on a third and long and inside handoff instead of possibly throwing the football down the field i understand the logic behind it they get four wide receivers spread the defense out but when you have marshall faulk in the backfield the defense is going to be wearing they didn't catch the defense off guard bill belichick knew that he was going to keep somebody on marshall fall and they stuck the point so they give the football back to the new york jets vinnie testaverde celebrated his 35th birthday a couple of days ago and one of the best birthdays of his life the way he's been playing [Music] [Applause] he did a nice job of breaking on that ball that ball was out there nice out pattern good move on the outside by dietrich ward he beats him initially but tyrol pulls into the hip pocket as soon as he makes his outrage watch him break on the ball right there and reach out and knock it knock it away good job by tyrone [Music] six straight incomplete passes that goes back to the first half fire sets up on the outside johnson goes in motion on a second and ten standing tall in the pocket uncharacteristic drop from wayne they rule it incomplete they had quebec crossing across the middle they had what he wanted he had a step on the defender should have been a first down that's uncharacteristic absolutely right away for bat but the jets look at the formations by the jets no one in the backfield empty backfield right here wayne krabetza catchable ball but the jets are using formation over formation against the indianapolis colts four wide receivers five wide receivers two backs one backs they've got an offensive scheme against indianapolis coach defense baxter had a chance to catch a touchdown pass in the end zone couldn't get it done because his foot was out of bounds johnson missing on a possible big play over the middle earlier this quarter and now wayne prevette that's the verdict under pressure and goes down bernard chasing him down for the sack third sack for the colts defense what happens when you put no back in the backfield and they come after you and blitz you everyone's got to hold up on the offensive line they run a good tt stunt up front with the linebackers but it's just hustle vinnie's looking around to see who's going to hit him he's got to look downfield and throw the ball and not worry about the rush but good hustle by bernard william chasing him down for the sound john kidd coming out of his own end zone good puck from kid bailey bouncing off a tackler into jets territory to the 49. 51-yard boot a 12-yard return john hudson the tackle 23-10 jets [Music] eight minutes left in the third jets in front 23-10 coming up tomorrow on cbs it's shameless crossover monday the stars of cbs monday shows they show up on each other's shows beginning with cosby followed by the king of queens and monday's number one comedy everybody loves raymond then ted danson stars in monday's newest hit becker followed by an all-new la doctors tomorrow on cbs colts have it first in 10 from the jets 49 manning has not been sacked today and just throws it away brian cox getting into his face brian cox is playing like a young player he's coming off the line of scrimmage those old legs are doing a great job you're getting the guard you're getting the tackle adam meadows that's supposed to come out behind the tight end and block him he gets a hand on him but brian cox forces peyton manning to roll out of the pocket he's got seven tackles today he's been a man on a mission this afternoon three pro bowls to his credit back in his miami dolphin days 14 sacks back in 1992 that's when he was considered one of the best linebackers in the nfl coming out of blitz [Applause] to the 45 james farrier tackling him low and third down coming up for indy i think indy's got to take a shot downfield they haven't thrown a pass over 30 yards all afternoon they've got to get this defense to respect them they're throwing the outs they're throwing underneath packages they're dropping it off to marshall fall they've got to go downfield because this jets defense will not respect it they'll play a little closer to the line of scrimmage let peyton manning complete the short stuff and just tap him colts again will go with the four receiver set harrison in motion movement on the left side from tara glenn left tackle jumped up and down for a moment before the play got going mike carey will get the official word and pass it along neutral zone in fraction on the defense jumping the news [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one of those new rules if a defensive player jumps in the neutral zone to try to get an offensive lineman to move the penalty goes on the defense you cannot draw them off here you go right here watch these two guys there's 78 tara krillin the offensive tackle but soon as the defender moves like that and the offensive lineman moves that's not on the offense anymore that's on the defense and that was anthony pleasant jumping in the neutral zone timeout has been called by the colts they will face a third and one when we come back 7 14 to play in the third and a 13 13-point new york lead [Music] the nfl on cbs is sponsored by acdelco automotive parts if you're not asking for it you're asking for it and by metlife get mad at pay labeled as a game the jets are supposed to win they lead the colts 23-10 but mark we have not seen the big effort from new york fortunate to be up to 13 points coulter a touchdown away from getting right back into this one play action setting up the screen and he's got the first down brian cox combining with pepper johnson the two veterans in on the play [Applause] nice job by peyton manning moving the pocket of fake to his running back marshall fox but he rolls and moves the pocket and dumps it off to his tight end dildor but brian cox on the ball i mean he's following this from play one he's found marshall faulk now he's going out to the flat to get to the titan dildor good hustle by brian cox they move the chains a first and ten from the 38. pump fake manning [Applause] marvin harrelson beat the double team jerome henderson on the play you're going to watch it and aaron glenn he beats the double team i said they've got to throw the ball along to get respect will they finally throw it deep and throw it downfield good call by tom moore there's harrison beating the defenders he's by aaron glenn he beat him on the play but here's peyton manning standing strong in the huddle and lofting the ball i said they've got to take a chance of stretching the defense well they did and what happens they get a touchdown and they get themselves right back into the football game the extra point from vanderjack lots of time left we're in the third 23 to 17 new york [Music] marcus pollard leading the cheer for the colts fans here at the rca dope 23-17 the jets have the advantage and the difference right now is the wild play that we saw at the end of the second quarter mike vander jack missing on a 63-yard field goal attempt and aaron glenn bringing it back 104 yards for the touchdown with no time left this is kevin williams [Music] and williams brought down to the 25 22-yard return robert blackman was able to take him down peyton manning ties an nfl rookie record with seven straight games with at least one touchdown pass dan marino david woodley and jim plunkett the other three rookies with that kind of number on the board and there's one thing about last year this year's draft going into the draft you knew one thing was for sure peyton manning was a sure bet you didn't have to worry about his maturity level he didn't have to worry about his athletic skills you knew what you were getting with peyton manning that's going to pay off for this indianapolis school franchise testaverde was supposed to be a sure bent back in 1987. 12 seasons later testaverde is now finally getting recognition on the handoff for martin extracurricular activity following the play elijah alexander and van tunney will be given credit for the tackle on martin a three-yard pickup on first down what i really liked about that play the way the defense converged on the tackle you saw seven or eight blue jerseys around curtis martin making the tackle they're hustled to the ball the emotion is there they're pushing the jets offensive line back and look at all the blue jerseys on the top all those blue jerseys 19 carries 87 yards for martin that's a 4.6 average gradient motion play action [Applause] in some traffic and keyshawn johnson comes up with a first down grab 15 yards on the pass play and that's what the height and the athletic ability of a keyshawn johnson gives you you can split defenders you can go up and grab passes like this look at the job he goes up and does and holding on to this football after he gets tattooed when you're 6-3 and you're taller than most of your defenders it's easy for you to go up there and make that type of play but he holds on to the football he gets nailed down to play by belzer and tyrone poole testaverde has just gone over 200 yards through the air one touchdown one interception from the 43 fires the motion [Applause] he's got baxter into colts territory and sprawled out at the 35-yard line a 22-yard hookup baxter runs a simple route just a skinny post right down the field he's on the left side of the screen it's just a skinny pulse makes a move at the post and just goes straight down the numbers and he's wide open you've got to love the way vinnie testaverde orchestrates his offense goes to baxter the back up tight end goes to brady the starting tight end goes to quebec goes to johnson goes to anybody out there that's open everybody on this offense has to be ready because vinnie testifier will find a way to get you and everybody in this offense is happy which is something that's very rare he's getting everybody involved one out to the sideline a timing pattern keyshawn johnson the intended receiver step for step jeff burris was there as was tyrone poole good position by tyrone poole forced keyshawn johnson to the outside and kept him past the numbers and keeping him out there by the sidelines making sure if he catches that ball it's going to be out of bounds and if he comes back into play he's got to run over tyrone poole for the penalty clock stops 406 to play in the third ion eagle and mark may with you from the rca dome the jets looking for their fifth consecutive win colts hoping to avoid their fifth consecutive loss on a double-tight end set martin on a sweep martin crosses the 30-yard line inches closer to the first down marker time now for an nfl today report we go to jim dance in new york all right and it is flutie time in buffalo to his tight end riemer smack and the bills have a 10-point lead and we've already begun the fourth quarter let's go back to you new england banged up and buffalo what a carpet ride they are on this season led by doug fluting that new england team has really gone backwards over the last three or four weeks even though they've got injuries a lot of teams use that for an excuse but you cannot do that you've got to play throughout the adversity of the season afc east tight as a draw testaverde on a third and three incomplete kyle brady was there andre royal and steve morrison were in the vicinity the defensive secondary does a tremendous job of not letting vinnie chester verity throw long he's got no one to go to with this ball tries to dump it off to his tight end cal brady but you see there the blue jersey in the screen they are all over the entire field putting pressure andre royal was on the coverage putting pressure on every wide receiver and getting many tested very space hall has not missed today this will be a 47-yard attempt the kick no good why to the left in an attempt to make this a two possession lead the jets fall short bill parcells knows this is a big play in this game he's just not getting the emotion out of his team that he's gotten this team probably came into this game a little bit flat looking at the record of the indianapolis colts at one and eight but they've gone through a whirlwind of playing teams with winning record time but mark how do you combat that because you can talk about it all week long this team is better than one and eight you can't take them for granted but then you show up on sunday and you see this a lot i think what you have to do is you have to be determined during the week and you can't lit up one iota and you have to let this team know from day one they're going to be in a dogfight against this team tennessee coming up next week for the jets in nashville were they looking ahead fox had his hands on it that's just a drop james farrier was there defensively that's an uncharacteristic drop of marshall faulk but they got what they wanted they got marshall faulk out in the flat one-on-one with a linebacker covering him james ferrier and he just couldn't come down with the catch look for mismatches out there and that's the mismatch they want they'd love to get marshall faulk on the linebacker because they know he'll win that battle nine out of 10 times remember no craig hayward here for the colts he will miss the rest of the season after having successful surgery earlier this week a benign tumor removed from the base of his skull now under three minutes left in the third yet well soon zest man craig hayward is a heck of a guy i've known him for an awful long time we went to the same university wish him and his family nothing but the best and future success and hope he gets healthy and hurt zestman of course is a reference to his very entertaining soap commercials i'm iron head that's not bad forget it i wasn't expecting that from it we might have to get some other impressions by the end of the day talk about uncharacteristic [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 15 yards and that's peyton manning making something happen what's most impressive about peyton manning his ability to throw on the run is a big man he gets flushed out of the pocket right here runs out of the pocket but he's always looking for a wide receiver he can throw on the run just as well as anyone else you usually don't see this from a big man the accuracy but marvin harrison doesn't give up on the play when your quarterback's flushed out of the pocket find a way to get open make a move find a spot settle down and get open that's what marvin harrison does first down indianapolis colts four catches 70 yards and a touchdown for harrison and this drive remains alive under two minutes left in the third straight back manning it's harrison again another 15-yard pass play and marvin harris is just getting wide open here they're dropping back in the zone but aaron glenn has him and look at the cushion look at the separation between them marvin harrison's just going to stop and receive the ball for another first down you can't play that far off the number one receiver from this team and that's marvin harrison he'll find a way to beat you if you're going to give him that type of cushion he'll get over has been getting better each year he's been in the league now this is third campaign first and ten from the 31 play clock winding down manning looking for it all harrison was there incomplete aaron glenn with the coverage they exchange pleasantries as harrison heads back to the huddle i like the call by offensive coordinator tom moore marvin harrison's hot go with him he's one on one with aaron glenn he presses at the line of skirmish but marvin harrison gets a step on him and almost comes down with a touchdown reception good job at the offensive line of giving peyton manning the cushion of sitting in the huddle and firing downfield but look at this ball it's right in his hands just at the very end he can't come down with the reception change on the offensive line right guard tony manderich on the sidelines replaced by tom mizelinski on the ground stutterstep move as he got across the 30-yard line and ahead to the 27 james farrier the tackle a four-yard gain marshall faulk's a man i mean he's really carried the load for this indianapolis colts football team offensively with his receptions with his running he determines on what's going to happen as far as this colts offense goes that's as far as marshall faulk can take this offense he's the guy that's got to have the ball in his hands coming up on a contract here wants to have a big gear he wants to touch the ball as much as possible 17 carry 62 yards a big third down with time ticking away in the third manning out of the shotgun jets were coming on a blitz torrent small has the first down for indianapolis kevin williams forced him out of bounds 10 yards on the play nice job by peyton manning of reading the blitz feeling the heat and getting rid of the ball in a hurry kevin williams comes on the blitz tour and small breaks it off right at the end comes up with a reception and makes a good move for the first down that's the end of the third quarter 23 to 17 jets back to indy after this message in a word from your local station start of the fourth quarter this is not a comfortable lead for the jets 23-17 tom moore offensive coordinator for the colts we're seeing peyton manning blossom before our eyes today he's made some big throws and some big decisions play action on a first intent from the 17. manic throws it out of bounds and that's one of the smart decisions by peyton manning and we had him the first week of the season and that's a play that peyton manning would have tried to force that ball in there six seven weeks ago now he's smart enough and he's grown through the growing pains to throw that ball away come back and live for another day ninth play of the drive coming up just underway here in the fourth jets trying to remain undefeated in the afc east 4-0 in division play entering today loses the football and it's kicked around loose at the 36. and the colts very fortunate that marshall faulk was able to scamper over and get it a flag down marshall faulk he's the savior of this franchise this year wherever a play needs to be made offensively marshall faulk finds a way to get in the middle of that play we'll see what the marker is holding offense number 67 that penalty is declined results will play as third down it was tom mizelinski in for tony manderich wisely the jets decline it and set up third in a mile and peyton manning just loses the ball he steps up in the pocket gets good protection he tries to bring it back and just loses the handle on the football and that's one of those things that happens to veteran quarterbacks it's not just a rookie mistake those things do happen but he's got to have more concentration that ball is probably a little wet out there he's going to drive his hands the fourth fumble of the season for the colts that is the lowest total in the league third and 33. manning works out of the shotgun guns one and it's broken up by corwin brown brown wanted that pick torrent small the intended receiver across the middle and that was an easy play to defend because peyton manning never looked off he never wavered he looked straight down the middle of the field he had torrent small eyed he wasn't going to take his alpha torrent small but it was a great break on the ball to break that play up defensively for the new york jets but that ball was an easy ball to break up defensively when you watch the quarterback if he never looks you off and goes to a second or third receiver break on that ball chris garcia he'll punt it to dedrick ward who fumbled earlier in this game and was able to recover play clock runs out this will give gardaki a little more room to work with as he will probably go for the corner growing pains for this young football team jim mora combining with president bill pauline offense five yards remains fourth down turn this organization into a winner new york city native bill paulian what a job he did with the bills and the carolina panthers both in their first seasons with this team the colts it's a high punt ward will let it bounce takes a roll into the end zone [Applause] jets have the football they'll try to add to their lead when we come back to indy after this [Music] [Applause] iron eagle mark may returning and the rca deal 23 to 17 jets have the lead and they have the football indianapolis wasting a golden opportunity momentum appeared to be on their side now the jets can answer back with prevented motion martin approaching 100 yards on the day taking it straight ahead pickup of two two and a half alfontado involved in the stop and the clock will continue to move you expect bill parcells to try to keep this on the ground if possible and resort to the pass only if necessary or if he goes to the pass it will be a very short controlled completed pass but this is bill parcells at his best he's got the lead in the fourth quarter move the change time let's find out if our running back is better than your defensive field 97 yards rushing for martin johnson in the three receiver look kesta stepping up in the pocket and going down tony mccoy and al fontenot combining on the sack we talked about tony mccoy all over the entire field early in the game and elephant note the hustle this is the fourth sack by the indianapolis colts defense this defense came into this game tied for last in the nfl with washington for the least amount of sacks given up by the defense washington and tennessee with 15 sacks they've got four against the new york jets down for the 17th time this season and now the jets with a third and ten call to the dime package roll out for testaverde throwing across [Applause] it appeared robert blackman made a great play with his left hand but the problem was his right hand was on the back of wayne curbet it will work against blackman pass and it's the right hand of robert blackman he goes up with his left but look at his right hand it's already on wayne corbett's back and that's what the infraction was first down for the jets ball spotted at the 30-yard line granny and byers in a double-tight end set prevent the motion [Applause] floats one up in the air and incomplete it was johnson on the sideline he was looking for a flag to no avail [Applause] the colts defensive rush is getting to vinnie testeverity putting pressure on him at the end of the play the ball is uncatchable but tyrone pooh just takes out keyshawn johnson on the play [Music] clock stops with 12 50 to play in the fourth jets lead it 23-17 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yard line time now for an nfl today report gymnast standing by in new york all right thank you watch this now new england getting back into it against buffalo to tony simmons the rookie from wisconsin for the touchdown but as we speak now the bills have been picked up in the end zone so they stopped the bills drive back to you tight one there tight one here jets have been unable to put away the indianapolis colts martin after coming up shy of 100 yards in each of the past two games goes over 100 today on a first and ten testaverde puts it in the air keyshawn johnson a whirling dervish trying to make that catch at the 45-yard line they say no catch incomplete that was a pretty acrobatic catch by keyshawn johnson but he was out of bounds juggling the football they're putting him in putting him in motion and getting the matchups they want because he can get enough separation from the defender while he's in motion that he can break free of him and vinnie testaveri can get him the ball teeshaw johnson extending that left arm i'll tell you what i think that's a catch it's close very close doesn't go the jet's way so it's a second and ten testa quick throw over the middle to johnson to the 45-yard line five-yard pickup and a flag on the play so the jets will have this play backed up it's always a situation where the jets seem to get something going that they shoot themselves in the foot this afternoon illegal shift on the offense number 66 76 was going down while the other man was in motion five yards second down jumbo elliott called for the illegal shift sixth penalty costing the jets 50 yards today here's jumbo right here he's got to stay stationary he can't move he's going down going to the three point you saw keyshawn johnson moving already when jumbo was going down he knows he's got to stay set before any she can move in that offensive side of the ball so now with second and 15 for new york [Applause] three receivers martin with a head of steam able to cross the 40-yard line but the jets will face a third and long they need to get to midfield spot the football at the 42. curtis martin his career has averaged 100 yards a game facing the indianapolis colts this is the eighth time he's faced him he's got over 800 yards rushing this is what he needed to pick up himself personally 23 rushing 114 yards but the killer is vinnie chester milking the clock running the ball picking up yards and he'll take this clock down to about three seconds before they snap play clock is down to three down to two [Applause] a sure first down if baxter holds on to it [Music] and the jets are forced to punt then he gets good time in the pocket gets to step up and complete it but baxter's got to catch his ball that's his second drop of the afternoon and i guarantee what bill parcells is thinking in the back of this nine all teams have this machine called the jugs machine where you put a ball in there and it fires it to you about 100 miles an hour he'll be working on that this week he'll probably be catching a couple hundred balls a day bacter's just left his feet and couldn't bring it in kid the punt bailey retreats to the nine yard line fair catch signal made goats will have it pinned back at the 9. we're back after this the nfl on cbs is sponsored by chevrolet trucks the most dependable longest lasting trucks on the road budweiser now is the perfect time to enjoy a fresh cold beechwood aged budweiser and by energizer advance for me no battery lasts longer 23 to 17 jets in front with 10 55 left in the fourth aaron bailey electing for the fair catch inside the 10 instead of maybe letting the ball bounce into the end zone marshall going up the middle and nothing much there rick lyle jason ferguson check out the nfl on america online at keyword team nfl and on the web at nfl.com log on tuesday night at 9 00 pm eastern to chat live with jets quarterback vinnie testaverdi on america online the difference in this one the wacky play at the end of the second quarter aaron glenn a 104 yard return for a touchdown off of a missed field goal from vanderjack marshall faulk hitting the hole hard coming up shy of the 20 though and that's where he has to get to for a first down james ferry or the tackle injured jet on the field it's ray mickens so the clock stops with 1001 to play in the fourth we'll step aside for a moment colts on the offensive end trailing 23 to 17. vinnie testaverdi undefeated as a starter for the new york jets this season 6-0 record the quarterback comparison with peyton manning the interception came on the first pass of the game for testaverde the touchdown to wayne quebec manning with a pair of touchdowns one to small the other to harrison and ray mickens able to walk off the field micken's so valuable in the nickel defense that bill belichick uses very opportunistic three interceptions this season big play ray they call him he'll be replaced by henderson in the nickel with kevin williams as well both safeties [Music] out of the shotgun manning sets [Applause] [Music] what a tremendous throw and a tremendous catch on that play peyton manning put that ball over the head of brian cox only where it could be dropped into marshall falcon a good one-hit and stab by marshall fall the play is over his shoulder watch this brian cox can't get there but a one-handed stab by marshall fall that's a pretty play that's as pretty as you're ever going to see by a veteran quarterback much less a rookie quarterback five catches 40 yards for and it gives the call to first down inside handoff and the jets were ready for fog dwayne gordon applying some pressure on the interior it'll set up second and 12. what surprises me about this indianapolis offense is they were very good on the screens early this season and they haven't gone to the screen that much with marshall fault it's another dimension of their offense that they need to use they've got to get him in the open field with the football double todd and [Applause] short of a first down aaron glenn making the stop but a 10-yard hook up leaving the colts with a third and two big day for 10 g ken tilger catching the football blocking today he's usually at pass protection now they're going to him with the passes forced reception today for 22 yards but nice route by ken dildor coming down with the football now this is something they haven't seen from ken dilbert this year he's usually a blocker in passing formations protecting the franchise peyton manning he did have a 156-yard receiving day against the jets back in 1996. manning on third and two [Applause] at the 35 and a new set of downs for the colts james barrier spun him down and this colt will just not get up they've bitten the tiger by the tail and they won't give up that's one great thing about young football teams if you can teach them to fight play in and play out that's what jim moore has done they don't know when to quit or how to quit and they hang in football games to the very end lamont warren now in the backfield with chris hetherington the fullback they're splitting two receivers for manning to work with from the 36. manning deep down the sideline intercepted [Applause] morgan harrison the intended receiver [Applause] it almost appears as marvin harrison gave up on the route aaron glenn stayed with the ball halfway through the route marvin harrison stops for a step and that's when aaron glenn stayed with the route here it is here's the movie looks back for the ball he stops the play isn't over you stay with the play aaron glenn does and comes up with the interception that is such a huge play with 7-eleven left in the fourth manning who has done so many positive things here today that's a negative and you look at those interceptions by peyton manning that's one that's not his fault he's got a lot of interceptions this year and a lot of those aren't his fault but that's just aaron glenn smart veteran playing the ball and going after the ball and never quitting into the whistles but his 20th int of the season that leads the nfl and now let's see what the jets can on do first and ten from the 20. [Applause] martin right up the middle and a good burst on first down matt o'dwyer laying out a block for martin to use can the jets put this indianapolis team away the lead is just six they haven't put them away yet they need to put that last stake into the coffin that last nail to bury him but this team just doesn't seem to be hitting on all cylinders they keep leaving an opening for the indianapolis colts but the colts haven't been able to respond but bill parcells knew this was going to be a tough game now it's time to milk the clock move the chains don't give them another chance try to get a long sustained drive and don't even give indianapolis another chance to get on the football field [Applause] using that play clock no secret what they'll do curtis martin ahead looks like they'll spot the football just shy of the 30-yard line we'll see if that's enough for a first down steve morris in the tackle 25 carries for martin 123 yards [Music] and this is great work for the new york jets an area that bill parcells wanted to work on he wanted to find out if they had to press the line of scrimmage if they had to force the ball against the defense and come up with big yardage could they do it and that's the sign of a playoff team and you've got to have a situation where curtis martin cannot always look to cut back he has to force the pressure point of the offensive line putting it on the defense extending the chains by a hair [Music] [Applause] curtis martin came in today averaging 3.2 yards per carry today just a shade under five yards per click time of possession new york jets control at their second in the afc they've done a great job that's bill marcel's football dominate the line of contributing and run the football pivotal third down time of possession doesn't mean much unless they can get this first down fires in martin on the pitch martin tripped up but had enough to get ahead for the first down very lucky on that play i don't like the call when it's third and short like that slam the ball in the middle of the field that just shows you don't have enough faith in your guards inside that you've got to pitch it outside and try to get to the perimeter you've got to rely on curtis martin speed and keith byers blocking to make a play he almost gets tripped in the backfield on this play hey you can't live on that type of play when you have to have it when it's third one he was tripped by his own man jason fabini the right tackle from fort wayne indiana has 200 friends on hand here today at the rca doll i hope they paid for their own ticket i think they did jason's just a rookie [Applause] five minutes left jets have a new set of downs martin stumbling ahead across the 35-yard line a pickup of about four on first down elijah alexander with a tackle and that clock continues to move colts have two timeouts to play with jets have three just grind the football out time give it to your featured back and curtis mark and run behind jumbo l and curtis martin still looks for that cut back when he forces the ball in there that's a question mark about this offensive line can they do the job and the last play he had to cut it back that ball was featured to go to the right side he had to cut it all the way back to the left behind jumbo elliott's cut off second and six field that's quebec in motion johnson the other receiver quick little out and a first down for new york vinnie testaverde making the connection to wayne crevette and wayne ferbet's amazing goes into motion plans here's his hand he plants and goes to the outside he's smart enough to know where that first down marker is and he's not going to be short but waiting for bet what can what more can you say about him he always comes up with that first down reception four catches today 112 yards and a touchdown that one went for 63 yards 4 13 to play in the fourth three receivers as ward checks in for new york motion man is quebec curtis martin calling a gain of three with belzer and mccoy combining on the inside second and seven for new york the guys up from indianapolis we talked to jim moore the other day he's making lots of changes in the defense he likes his two tackles but everybody else positions are almost wide open they want to find out what they have on defense before they go into next year's free agent market in the draft they haven't given up on defense but they need to know how deep they are linebacker how deep they are in the secondary and if they have defensive ends that can play nfl caliber football for what they see to the indianapolis folks second and seven [Applause] five receivers and the pile pushed ahead to midfield yard gain and a timeout called by the colts they'll have one remaining 3 21 left in the fourth jets clinging to a 23-17 lead the colts offense just hoping to get back on the football field tony manderich will not be going back nursing a back injury on the sidelines lewinberg cheering on the indianapolis defense new york facing a third and fourth from the 50-yard line jets looking for their first sweep of the colts since 1986 brady in motion roll after testifiers and incomplete jets forced to punt with 3 17 remaining in the fourth nice play by the offensive staff of the new york jets vinnie tetsaveri move in the pocket rolling out to the right but that ball is tipped right at the line of scrimmage by a colt defender good pressure by the colts of moving with the pocket with testoveria not letting him get a free look downfield important punt for john kidd bailly will let it bounce takes a roll into the end zone chris hayes with one last gas pepper trying to save it colts have it from the 20 when we come back [Music] the nfl on cbs is sponsored by ibm are you ready for e-business and by enterprise car pick enterprise we'll pick you up [Music] [Applause] ian eagle and mark may rejoining you from indianapolis the jets lead it 23-17 colts with a first and ten from their own on the cross marvin harrison [Applause] and a flag comes down i can understand of making a good play in the big play but intentionally fumbling the ball forward trying to advance the football manning waits officials trying to sort it out jim mora trying to tell the officials that he was already down they don't buy it not at all and i understand trying to make a big play but in this situation less than three minutes only one timeout left you have to play smart the illegal forward pass by the office number eighty eight two involved out of bounds also down [Applause] got to use your head mark you have to in this situation he's trying to make something happen but intentionally trying to fumble the ball and advance it they're not going to cut it the officials are all over this call they've done a great job the entire afternoon payton has done just about everything he can do to win this game it's been the surrounding cast around him and haven't filled your potential but he knew it on second down manny throwing on the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] once again aaron glenn with the coverage nice job of peyton manning rolling out of the pocket throwing the ball on the run and that's a catch that is a catch there's not even it's not even close not at all he brought that right in and they're talking about it over on the sidelines right now maybe one of the other officials had a better look at it but i don't think anybody right there that's close it looks like it hit his thigh and he came back there you go my eyes aren't as bad as you claim them to be i'll tell you what though that second replay it appeared as if the ball may have fallen down to the turf very tough angle to see that's close it looks like it hit his thigh though looks like he cradled it into his stomach the colts get the call and the clock has stopped with 247 left in the fourth first and ten for indianapolis from the 38th shotgun for manic over the head of torrance small and out of bounds it'll be second and ten the jets have not won a division title since 1969 that year they went undefeated in the old afl east they're currently undefeated in the afc east at 4-0 and they've been on quite a run four consecutive victories trying to make it five in a row here this afternoon defense for the most part has been there for new york behind bill belichick do the colts kevin williams the coverage otis smith got his hands on it and a penalty it's going to be a holding call on right tackle adam metals offense number 73 he was trying to hold the defender away from peyton manning when peyton manning rolled out of the pocket he rolled with him and you have to take your hands repeat second down a young football team including a young right tackle only in his second year you're going to see him to the right of the screen behind the goal post once a defender leaves you you have to take your hands off right there he's got a lock on him and that's moe lewis so it backs the colts up to the 28th seventh penalty on indy second and 20 for the colts with 231 left in the fourth operating out of the shotgun incomplete and almost picked off by otis smith had an interception earlier today the 20th of his career second on the season for smith and almost had his third the colts problem is they have problems converting they can't convert on third downs and today they've had problems and they've had opportunities against the jets but when you look at jim moore in this team you have to get the feeling that this team is the future they are going in the right direction what they're doing third and 20. harrison in motion three receivers here come the jets on a blitz manic unloads harrison brings it in [Applause] twirled down shy of the 40-yard line and well short of a first down ray mickens brings them down to the turf it'll be fourth and ten for the colts and there's no question a one and eight team this is an opportunity to knock off a playoff contender fourth down you have to go for it [Applause] stranger things have happened including one of the most bizarre plays that you will see in the second quarter with no time left but if the jets stop the colts here new york will have a chance to just run out the clock colts with only one timeout remaining fourth and ten for indy they didn't get the playoffs they did not get the play off before the play clock expired and that's the problem with the young team you can't teach experience delay on the offense five yards fourth down so make it a fourth and 15. and it happens a lot in the nfl when you make a decision to go for you have to make your decision automatically you can't hesitate or deviate you've got to go for it right off the bat a lot of teams get caught in the same situation where they use too much time eighth penalty on indianapolis fourth this quarter alone fourth down 15 yards to go manning out of the shotgun good protection throws to who's open will try to run it for the first down breaks a tackle he's got the first down in the jets territory as we hit the two-minute warning [Applause] two minutes left jets with a 23-17 lead on the colts coming up next the franklin templeton shark shootout from thousand oaks california that's coming up immediately following this game jacobson and cook currently the leaders two shots better than roka and hoke and norman and elkington never a dull moment when these two teams meet normally at least one of the two matchups turns out to be very close over the course of a season series colts have won six of the last eight over new york jets looking for the sweep they crushed them back at week three manning throws incomplete small across the middle second and ten coming up torrance small did his job he got open but peyton manning throws this ball behind him if the ball's thrown on the money it's a reception in the middle field he's got to reach back behind him in front of otis smith but he did have otis smith beaten on the play a minute 56 to play [Applause] shotgun for manning manning [Music] [Applause] the rookie jerome delivers makes his move on the outside one-on-one against ray mickens a little push-off and runs a little out catches the ball gold's just pushing the pile ahead minute 25 and ticking [Applause] and manning spikes the football colts still have one timeout left and lots of time to play with marshall faulk out there kiddingly slaps peyton manning having a little fun telling peyton to calm down relax there's lots of time got a time out got a minute and 21 seconds left there's plenty of time here just be patient the jets every season try to get rid of the same old jets tag in the new york area and it's games like this that bring it back [Music] [Applause] yard line not quite enough for a first down down to a minute three left clock continues to move this is third in inches manning's first down for the colts across the 25. and now indianapolis looking to call the timeout and they do with 52 seconds left that is their final timeout coming up tonight on cbs see how annie sullivan sacrificed her life to bring light to helen keller in the sequel to the miracle worker roma downey and maura kelly star in the monday after the miracle tonight on cbs colts might be trying to pull off a miracle of their own jets had countless opportunities to put indianapolis away they could not do it new york in front because of a 104 yard return from aaron glenn at the end of the second quarter that was off of a missed field goal from 63 yards away mike van der jack only one second left on the clock it was jim mora who decided to go for the field goal it came back to fight indianapolis but now the colts hoping to have last laugh with 52 seconds to play they trail by six but what a shot in the arm this would be for the indianapolis colts jim warren and staff in this young football team to beat a playoff contending team in their own backyard and do it with a come from behind fashion 13th play of the drive no timeouts remaining first and ten from the 24. shotgun for manic throws twirled down across the 15. [Applause] and another indianapolis first down clock continues to move punk fake manic incomplete he was looking for dilger in double coverage and the clock is stopped 30 seconds left 23-17 new york strategically at this point of the game tom moore has to look to the outside marvin harrison one-on-one jerome payton one-on-one they've been eating up the middle of the field against the jets running post running slants across the middle have been very effective now it's time to take your shots on the outside because the jets are going to look for a pass down the middle the collar a little tighter on bill parcells expecting a tough game from indianapolis don't know if he expected it to be a game in the fourth quarter it is second and ten manning throwing marcus pollard the colts are an extra point away from taking the lead 23-23 he's got it colts lead by one and an outstanding job by peyton manning he's looking to the outside hold this wide receivers on the far outside of the double team watch the move by marcus right there a little twirl moving to the inside and look at him lunge into the end zone over otis smith for the touchdown tremendous play by the quarterback and his tight end and marcus pollard of dragging oda smith into the end zone but peyton manning the rookie looking to his first wide receiver on the outside his second wide receiver then going to his tight end that's fighting to make a move and that's excitement out of a guy that's taking the ball in a two-minute drill down the entire football field against a playoff contending division leading new york jet football just 24 seconds left for the jets they have all three timeouts the lead was always shaking it never seemed like the jets had control of this game and we talked about this earlier in the game the emotion for the judge is just looking there on the sidelines it was almost a ho-hum attitude that we've got the lead will bury this team well this team of the indianapolis colts they're young they bit the jets on the back side and they haven't let go since jets led it 23-10 at halftime they have not scored in the second half colds have outscored the jets 14 to nothing since halftime 24 seconds left vinnie his unblemished 6-0 record as a starter very much in jeopardy kickoff from vanderjack glenn a yard deep from the end zone aaron glenn trying to get to the outside [Applause] to play marcus pollard what an effort for the colts and not only that you've got a big 260 pound tight end against a small defensive back he's dragging him into the end zone no way he's going to be denied you could have put an elephant on his back marcus pollard was not going to let otis smith deny him of the touchdown 30 years ago jets fans were unable to see the ending of the jetson raiders because of hiding we will stick with you for the final 19 seconds trust us 24 23 calls tessa verdi throwing jumps in the open man down to 12 seconds left jets have time outs and they take one with ten left on the clock two timeouts left they're giving kishan too much space on the outside but they are letting them catch the underneath pass so they can catch it tackle them in bounds but that's just too much space to give them tyrone poole is playing too far off this is a one point game you can't let him get down the field and have a field goal attempt you've got to keep them on their side of the 50-yard line i understand you're playing it safe defensively rusty tiltman defensive coordinator but if you want to win the game you've got to get these wide receivers mustache john hall's longest field goal of the season 54 yards only 10 ticks on the clock left jets have it just shy of their own 48-yard line they put a second back on the clock there's some coaching going on out there bill parcells a councilman coach but he's making sure that vinnie testimony is quarterback and everybody knows exactly the scenario that he wants to happen if it's a completion if it's an incomplete pass he wants them to know now this is what we're going to do plain and simple [Music] 11 seconds left jeff's trailing by one testifier this game is over a damaging loss for the new york jets bill parcells is sick on the sidelines because you can't let a game come down to a muff snap a bad exchange between quarterback and center how could you let it come down to this this is a very basic play fundamental play bad mob bad snap quarterback center right there here come the folks look at those blue jerseys converge on that ball vinnie testified he had it but the colts defense knocked it out of there and al fontenot came up with a big fumble recovery bill parcells just hoping that his team had the football they did not he was trying to call timeout [Applause] [Music] parcells knew wow he knew the scenario he knew this team was right for the picking of his football team after playing against winning football teams the past four weeks and playing at such a high level he was afraid of the indianapolis colts playing at home a 1-8 football team when these two teams match up against one another you just don't know what could happen over the years the maturation of peyton manning leading his team to a victory and handing the new york jets a pivotal divisional loss colts 24 jets 23. [Applause] new york six and four the colts now two and eight for mark may i'm i and eagles sing so long from indy we'll send you to jim nance in our nfl today's studio right after this message and a word from your local station colts come from behind 24-23 the final [Applause]
