but go up in flames but the Cowboys have shown signs of an offensive resurgence and are still alive in the NFC East race they could take a big step towards saving a season turned sour by defeating Washington today Redskins coach Norv Turner looks to continue his mastery over his former team and win for the fifth time in six tries led by Terry Allen the Redskins hope to avoid last year's late season collapse and make a push for their first playoff berth since the days of Joe Gibbs [Music] cool sunshiny day in Texas you're looking at Texas Stadium in Irving Texas halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth the home of the Cowboys for this rivalry between the Redskins and the Cowboys as they continue and over the years John madness has been one of the most intense rivalries in the history of the NFL and there was hate involved they were all kind of insults involved as that kind of rivalry still exists you think I think so I mean you know there's just so much history here I mean you think of Tom Landry and George Allen and Joe Gibbs Jimmie Johnson now Norv Turner was an assistant coach here with the Dallas Cowboys bringing his team the Redskins in there he seems to have their number and I've always said that to have a rivalry game it has to be a division game late in the season in November with some playoff implications and that's exactly what we have here today when you look at these NFC East and these not that the winner of this game is going to be in the playoff but I think the winner of this game is going to put himself in position to really make a run at it the Giants have already won so they'll retain the leadership in the NFC East what about the Redskins what I have to do today well you know anytime you play the Redskins you know that you're gonna play a big offensive line and they're gonna run the ball I mean Terry Allen has to have a big day running that offensive line has to control the line of scrimmage now having said that and you know Norv Turner is not the type a coach that is just gonna run every down that they're also gonna take some shots they're gonna throw deep and no one Norv Turner he has some plays that he is going to get some guys open when they go deep but the key I think is gonna be Gus fought when the guy does get open Gus fought hitting them that's a big key just for rot lately now what about the Cowboys their chances they're five and five they're not out of it yet well no they're they're not but they're gonna they're gonna need a win here today and I think I think they're gonna have a makeshift offensive line I also have to be able to run the ball they're gonna use a lot of two tight ends today as we're talking to Troy Aikman yesterday you know you have Chris Dishman over there on one side you have Daryl green on the other side of corners it's going to be hard to throw to the outside receivers the Cowboys are going to use two tight ends and he says the key to the passing game is going to be his hitting the secondary those two great corners Deion Sanders and Kevin Smith and Woodson and Mary and Dee Deion Sanders out there now on Westbrook Michael Westen wrestled to the ground by dexstar Coakley as he tried to cut it back it will be third down for the is about seven these cowboy linebackers have Carrie Allen has zeroed in on in the on the first play randall godfrey really hit him and misdirected out of bounds and the Cowboys will take over at the 38 yard line their own 38 just a little friendly conversation now that's what you get in a division rivalry a division rival you know we were just talking about that they play each other twice a year and they know each other better than they know other teams Troy Aikman nine-year veteran and in front of him a makeshift offensive line Hegeman and Tony Hudson starting his first time ever Allen Newton and clay Chivers Center Emmitt Smith and Herschel Walker in the backfield with Anthony Miller and Michael Irvin why bjornsen the tiny are they 29th against the run but you don't score a lot against him and there's Mike Nolan he's a he's a defensive coordinator and and they play a gap defense and on that play they're in that defensive play there everyone had their gap and there was no place for Emmitt Smith to run to the outside that gap was taken and all the inside gaps were taken for cut backs third and three two tight end set up going the first time they have the ball they'll have to punt you know it was interesting before the penalty the Washington Redskins were in man-to-man coverage so they did have man-to-man then they got the five-yard penalty then the went into his own defense I think Troy Aikman was expecting a man-to-man coverage good kick by going Ryan Mitchell fair catch at the 16 that's where the Redskins will start their second possession the either club's offensive unit able to manufacture much in their first possession I don't think either one of these teams have been very good this year on their first possession I think they're you know teams that want to establish a running game and they know and they have from if you stop that run and usually do stop the run early I mean in any game it is more difficult to run the football early it is later in the game so if you're going to establish that a lot of time to run they just ran into a wall what the hex is all about this is a wave I haven't seen a wave in a long time LarryBoy to the 25 north Turner was telling us that Larry Bowie is really making a difference in this office it's not only a blocker but he's also now becoming a runner you know instead of giving it every time to Terry Allen once in a while you pop it to Larry Bowie but he's also becoming a pass receiver it was a lot like he had when he was here with the Cowboys a lot calls his own place what he's trying to do now by running Bowie is taking that key off of Terry Allen because the first time the Redskins had the ball you could see that they were just key in Ontario this play from the beginning here's Leslie Shepard we get a blitz here and no one covers them the closest guy is right there's bill Bates he comes out and lets him go he runs right through the zone get a linebacker who runs a four-four and you play them at safety so then when you need a safety or a cover guy he's back there and when you need an extra run guy they have an extra line back from [Applause] Allen Terry Allen gets another it's good first down Terry Allen's not known is one of Faraci choice receivers but they usually bring in Brian Mitchell on that third down passing situation that time they left Terry Allen but you'd see how aware he was he was running right at those first down snakes we've been talking about that all day all you have to be aware where the first down marker isn't getting beyond it so on Terry Allen did it perfectly that time first down Redskins at their own 42 - sure again emotionally again back to throw [Applause] that's incomplete bounces it was to the 49 you know one thing that Terry Allen was talking to us about last night he's always liked about Norv Turner is it is it unless they get way behind he'll stay with the run and a lot of these offensive coordinators they love to pass and once they pass it's very difficult for them to come back start called running play they all say we got to be patient and that's what being patient is of gotten away from yeah I may be you know I think that what they're trying to do is they were throwing that so much and not loosening them up that they want to try and loosen them up down this will Michael urban can do just by using his body and it's all position I mean christen Dishman is right there but all Michael Irvin did is when he got that right shoulder turned then he gave Troy Aikman a those fourth and short situation will you ever forget two years ago in Philadelphia third and short they went for it didn't make it fourth and short they went for it again and didn't make it you know and that's that that's a tough one because they want to run the ball they want to run it behind their best offensive lineman Larry Allen which brings you to the right side but it also makes you run it that is Troy Aikman that is also good pass protection because Michael Irvin was able to do this see that Troy still had the ball and come off a pattern stay alert and keep working and give Troy Aikman and he says I'm going to take my chances with that battle they look like they're even they looked like they were fighting I'm gonna take it good Troy Aikman right there then he's giving them a talk and they all put their hands together here you can just feel in that meeting in that group you can feel a sense of urgency 97 yards to tie the game the Redskins first intent of their own [Applause] hopefully shoves him out of our [Applause] this is what deep but the Cowboys have to be thinkin now is to is do is to give the ball back because they have their timeout and I would think with this field position that the Cowboys would be using the timeouts on defense if the Redskins don't go out of bounds and the Redskins should be thinking do we stay at bath or do we force overtime Pass is incomplete I think when you're on the road you force overtime Turner Turner is linked in that right now you go for a pass where do you go an incomplete pass of course would stop the clock and incomplete run would make him use a timeout he's putting his fast receding unit which includes Brian Mitchell Chris Thomas into the game I wouldn't be surprised to see him ruin that play [Applause] what does this comeback do to the rest of your season and the diss save your season today well it probably saved us I mean this games this games it was a big game but we don't go on to take care of business from here then this one we won't really matter too much but I think we all realize that in order to keep our hopes alive and get back in the race and have any kind of chance we had to win today even the way the offense was performing early did you fear at one point that maybe this just wasn't going to be the day well we struggled we you know there's no question about that as frustrating it's been frustrating all year but I think in sign of a good football team was going to say to the battle back we were able to put you versity behind us and come up with a football right
