If you don't get what is going on like me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHorauG1oP4 (0:20-1:10)
I didn't know the shot before was defensive shot.
I used to play in Hollywood Billiards (in the basement, before the Northridge quake wrecked the place) for fun, and after a while, got to be pretty good - at least within my circle of lamers. There was this guy there that we all nick-named "The Shark" .. he must've been in his 60's, and we called him "The Shark" because he was always scouting around the tables, looking for suckers to play him for the next round of beers. A real player, in the truest sense of the word. I always avoided playing against him early in the night, he was just too damn good .. but as the night (mornings) wore on, I'd get the druthers to give it a whirl. It became sort of a thing among my crowd, whether one of us could ever beat "The Shark".
He knew I was just some lame amateur punk out to get drunk, but nevertheless, he treated me real fair - he'd play one handed. Well, I found out that the only way to beat "The Shark" was to goad my friends to start the session, lose 3 or 4 games to him first, buy the rounds, get him real, real drunk. Even then it was a major challenge. But I managed to kick his ass in the last 2 or 3 games (of 10) and my reward was that he'd take my cue stick, re-do the leather on the tip, shave away the fuzz and make it nice and new. It was worth it, coz that cue gave me the edge over my lamers.
Anyway, he used to make Z-shots like this, like on the regular. It was always amusing to fight to get him set up in a bad situation, and then he'd just "plonk", tip-shot his way out of the minor hells I'd place him in, and voila .. time for another round.
Man I miss those days. Hollywood Billiards was great before the quake. Nothing quite like crawling up those stairs out of the basement to discover it was Sunday afternoon and the Mongolian BBQ was open across the street .. and that was another place the quake destroyed .. one of the saddest moments I ever felt was seeing their massive gridiron bbq, formerly installed in the front area by the window, was now placed right across the street having torn the place to pieces. Kind of a z-shot, come to think of it. Anyway, Mongolian BBQ Hollywood never came back.
Yeah, "The Shark" and his Z shots got me through some good times during those halcyon days ... always wondered what happened to the old guy. He was definitely from a different era, which closed with the quake.
. .. ... EDIT: "The Shark"'s real name was Teddy .. Teddy "The Shark" .. and he sometimes used to play handicap with a broomstick, for real! This little detail courtesy of my new pal /u/justsayin65 who also was around in those days, and who reminded me of the broomstick details .. nice one /u/justsayin65, that sure sweetens things up!
I want to sit in a dive bar on a Tuesday afternoon where they play old VHS recordings of pool and bowling tournaments
There's a reason he's called "The Magician".
I love how casual he looks.
Why didn't he have to sink the 9 ball to win?
Any Efren Reyes video is a click for me because I know it will be incredibly impressive and entertaining.
I would always see Reyes at the Commerce Casino during the pool tournaments in the mid 90's. He would be walking around the pai gow section with a little rope across his chest and a customized Leather Pouch holding his customized pool sticks, smoking and wearing that golden shiny Rolex. Cool dude.
One of our greatest sports heroes in my country. Everywhere he's called the magician, but here we call him simply "Bata", the kid.
