[Music] you want to be able to bank like that you've come to the right place [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] welcome back everybody today I would like to show you how I line up a one rail bank shot which also works for a one rail kick shot let's get started okay in this first example we're going to try to bank the eight ball here into the cross side pocket in order to measure where on the opposite side rail the eight ball has to contact to Bank its way into the side pocket we have to understand that the distance between corner pocket the side pocket is four diamonds starting here from the corner pocket you would count one two three four including the side pocket and then starting from the side pocket you would count one two three four going to the corner pocket the reason why you have to know that is that there's four different measuring lines that I'm going to show you and one of those measuring lines is going to help you figure out where the eight ball has to hit on the opposite side rail in order for it to go in the first measuring line we're going to look at starts here at the corner pocket take your cue and lay it across the table from corner pocket to corner pocket and you should already know that the distance from this corner pocket to this side pocket is four diamonds so ask yourself what is half of four the answer is two so take the tip end of your cue and move it over one two diamonds this line here shows you that if there was a ball underneath that line that at diamond two on the opposite side rail that is where the ball would have to hit in order to go here into the cross side pocket the next measuring line we're going to look at is one diamond away from the corner pocket so how many diamonds away are we from the side pocket one two three and what is half of three one and a half so now take the then WQ and move over one and a half diamonds now we have a line that shows that if there was a ball underneath this line then where the tip end of the cue is shows where on the rail the ball would have to hit in order to go here into the cross side pocket the third measuring line starts here in between the corner pocket and the side pocket so now how many diamonds away are we from the side pocket one two and what's half of two we all should know it is one so take the tip end of the cue and move it over one diamond now we've got another line that shows that if there was a ball underneath this line we now have where we need to hit on the opposite side rail in order to Bank the ball here into the cross side pocket and for our last measuring line we're only one diamond away from the side pocket and half of one is a half so we take the tip end of our cue and only move over a half a diamond giving us our fourth measuring line that shows that if there was a ball underneath this line we know we're on the opposite rail the ball would have to hit in order to be banked here into the cross side pocket now that we have those four measuring lines what you want to do is find the line that is past the object ball in the direction you want to bank and is the closest to the object ball so to bank this eight ball here into the cross side pocket let's start from the very beginning from the corner pocket we are four diamonds away and half of 4 is 2 but this line is not past the 8 ball in the direction we want to bank so let's move to the next line here we are three diamonds away half of three is one-and-a-half but we are still not passed the ball in the direction we want to bank so let's move over to the next line - diamonds away from the cross side pocket half of 2 is 1 and we are now past the 8-ball in the direction that we want to bank this is also the line that is closest to the 8-ball because if I were to measure here being only one diamond away half of one is a half we're still past the 8-ball in the direction that we want to bank but we're not as close as we possibly can be that's why we use this line to diamonds away from the cross side pocket half of 2 is 1 so this is where we are now that we have this line what you want to do is shift this line over the 8-ball by shifting the line I do not mean picking up the butt end of your cue and just moving only the butt end of the cue to where you are over the 8-ball nor do I mean picking up the shaft and every cue and moving over to where you're over the eight ball because now you're back where you're started by shifting the line over the eight ball we have to take the line and move straight over to where now we're over the eight ball and we now have a point on the rail where we have to make the eight ball hit in order to Bank into the side pocket let's see how that works right into the heart of the pocket now I'm going to demonstrate a series of bank shots in either direction for this first shot I'm going to bank the 8-ball here in the cross corner pocket so let's find the closest measuring line this time starting from the side pocket we are one two three four diamonds away half of four is two one two and we're already past the 8-ball in the direction we want to bank so let's shift the line over the 8-ball to give us where on the opposite side rail the eight ball should hit in order to go into the cross corner pocket for this shot I'm going to bank the eight ball here into the cross side pocket only this time I'm not going to bother measuring from for diamonds away three diamonds away or two diamonds away because after enough practice I'm well aware that neither of those three measuring lines will be past the eight ball in the direction that I want to bank so I'm automatically gonna start here one diamond away from the side pocket half of one is a half so I will move the shaft into my Q half the diamond over and I've now passed the eight ball in the direction that I want to bank as I shift the line over the eight ball so I can see where on the opposite side rail the eight ball should hit in order to go into the cross side pocket for this bank-shot I want to demonstrate that the same system also works when you bank the length of the table from corner pocket to corner pocket the distance from corner pocket to corner pocket is also 4 1 2 3 4 just like how it is from corner pocket to side pocket so let's find that closest measuring line and try to bank the eight-ball into the cross corner pocket starting from this corner pocket we are four diamonds away half of 4 is 2 1 2 but we can see that this line is not past the 8 ball in the direction that we want to Bank so let's move to the next line this time we're three diamonds away half of three is one and a half one and a half and it looks like we're past the eight ball in the direction that we want to bank so now let's shift this line over the 8 ball to show us where on the opposite side where L and the 8 ball should hit in order to go into the corner pocket now I want to show you how the same system works for one rail kick shots in this example of an 8 ball game I'm not able to shoot the 8 ball directly because I am blocked by the 14 ball so I'm going to use the same measuring system to find where on the opposite rail to kick in order to knock the 8 ball into the corner pocket only this time I'm not looking for to close this line past an object ball I'm looking for the closest line that has passed the cue ball in the direction that I want to kick so from this starting point being for diamonds away to the corner pocket half of 4 is 2 1 - but I'm not past the cue ball so this is not the line I want to use the next line being only three diamonds away and half of three is one and a half so one and a half and I'm now past the cue ball so now I'm going to shift this line to be over the cue ball to show me where on the side rail I should hit in order to kick the eight ball into the corner pocket just be sure that you call it so that way you actually win the game so what do you do in a situation like this when the eight ball is not sitting in front of the corner pocket that you want to kick it into well I like to use what I already know works and what I mean by that is I'm going to find the measuring line that allows me to kick the cue ball into the corner pocket and then I'm going to make an adjustment so from here I'm gonna go ahead and start two diamonds away from the corner pocket because I'm well aware that four and three diamonds away is not going to be the right measuring line half of 2 is 1 so I move the shaft end of my cue to diamond 1 and I can see that I am past the cue ball so I'm going to shift this line over the cue ball and see where the cue ball would have to hit in order to go into the corner pocket but if I shoot this I'm not going to make the eight ball because I have to make the cue ball go a little bit longer from the corner pocket in order for it to go in so what direction do we think I have to adjust in order to make the cue ball go long from the corner pocket I hope you don't say to the right because if I go to the right that means I'm going to come short of the corner pocket so that only leaves one other direction and that to the left so from here when I shift the line over the cue ball I now have a spot that shows me where I should hit in order to go into the corner pocket and now I'm pretty much going to make a guess by adjusting to the left so that I know that I come long I might be guessing but at least I'm guessing from a point that I know works and with enough practice sometimes a guess is not a guess well that's all for today I hope I was able to clearly demonstrate the system that I use for one rail bank shots that also works for one rail kick shots there is one more important thing you do need to know about banking a ball or kicking the cue ball off of a rail and that is how the outbound angle is affected by how hard you hit the ball or if the ball has any side spin every shot that I demonstrated today I hit at about a medium pace now had I'd hit the ball a little bit harder we would have seen that the outbound angle would have caused the ball to come short of the pocket that I was trying to make and had I'd hit the ball a little bit softer we would have seen that the outbound angle would have been a little bit wider still causing me to miss the pocket now as far as how side spin can actually affect the outbound angle I'm actually going to cover that in a future lesson when I get to the point of shooting a ball with side spin in the meantime if you found this video helpful give it a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe take care everybody
