hamstring as the seven on three Chiefs leading the AFC West go against the 82 Buffalo Bills a half game behind Miami in the AFC East hi everybody I'm Marv Albert and we are delighted to welcome Mike Ditka to the role of color commentator making the transition from the studio and Mike looking down the roll this certainly a game that could determine home-field advantage in the playoffs yeah I think it's very meaningful in that sense but I think you got to worry about the playoffs first I think both of these coaches and stress let's get to the playoffs we let her own field take care of South a little bit later well as Marv levy of Buffalo said our first concern is making the playoffs Buffalo has won the toss they will receive they have the rookie from Memphis State Russell Copeland and the veteran Don Beebe back deep Nick Lowery will kick it off Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday loss to the Bears 1917 to snap their home win streak at 8 she's held to three points and the second half of the Russell cooker or stay right there the Buffalo Bills will start from their 20-yard line an offensive line that has held together although four of the five starters have been hobbled at one time or gets the call and it's a short pickup Phillips and Sutter hula combined to make the stop Marv the first play they just went with the old option screen they got Thomas out of the backfield just try to get effect is a running play we try to get to four or five yard put him in a good second down situation we were talking with Dave Adolph the defensive coordinator for the Chiefs and he said the idea the Kansas City is to force Thomas to one side way you must make him bounce now right here he's got it straight up the field and you must make the man bounce left or right and then you hope people can come up and get to him because if you let him hit the gaps that quick he's gonna make some yardage in you body wash made the stop but Thomas has moved the chains and as a first down for Buffalo you can see what they did is they just went to type of a draw they enticed the linemen to come forward turn him and he just picked the gap there was a force down at 44 Thomas took the hip from Ronnie marks it is a a short quick which was right there every receiver out there keeping note backs in nobody in to protect him but that was a pretty good whack that Thomas took on that play right there yes Thurman Thomas is shaken up Thurman Thomas has been one of the more durable banks over the years in a sixth season out of Oklahoma State we'll get another look at that hit by number 51 got everybody out again everybody is out on the play all they're doing is trying to protect with the five linemen it's an underneath play and he gets caught in a bad position Jim got the ball a little high to him he's kind of you know he's in a vulnerable position there he gets whacked in the ribs it looks right Thurman Thomas Mike involved in the first four plays two receptions and two rushes Marv he's 37 38 percent of their total offense is Thurman Thomas they have to get him this hope that this isn't very serious but it looks to me like he got it in the back of the ribs I think I don't see any problem with his legs or anything I'm sure the winds not got him he should be okay Lonnie Mart's with the big hit Ronnie marks and his fourth year out of Tulane has taken over as a scholar making the successful transition from safety sequence for scar running backs last couple of weeks Smith Barry Foster Barry Sanders all suffering injuries second down and seven as we resume Kelly could not find any and this is what they have to do they've got a pressure they got to keep somebody in front of Kelly they've got to be in front not so much from the side and back but up from the front and that'll stop him from stepping up and finding the receiver and apparently Thurman Thomas is alright as he makes his return it'll be a purr down and seven from the 37 two minutes gone by in this first quarter with no score for three and B be our flight to the left side hooks to the near side that's read emotion again Kelly can't find his receivers and frozen that's just good defensive play the defense played an outstanding they matched up a linebacker men the man with metzelaars they're going to take their chances and cover the tight end with a linebacker that's going to free them up to put more people in the secondary to cover those outside receivers and get a heck of a job of their right there so Chris Moore will come on the checking in for Buffalo of the dangerous Dale but it is 21 Kansas City's first round the school a Tennessee favorable pounce Tamar bets a play that's got to be fair part regardless he had plenty of time the fair catch it wasn't time to come up and catch the ball and that will go down as a 56-yard punt for Chris Paul aunt Anna making his first appearance since October the 31st in the starting lineup coming back from the second pulled hamstring injury of the season of bloody assault sot grunt hard shields and Ziggler a very physical offensive line Montana and quarterback Marcus Allen now in the starting lineup along with people Anders at the run fast Davison pays off the receivers and they go to what Marty Schottenheimer refers to as the hoop for sale cheap cash as the second tide an Kansas City from at 7:00 to the offense for the first time [Applause] you couldn't have better timing I don't know that fed ball is thrown any place that can be throwing because James Williams on the coverage as you look at the Buffalo front seven handsome right and sniff apart Bennett patent go genious and the lineup for the injured Mark Maddux and the secondary Williams Adam Jones and Kelso backstep second choice second at 2:15 [Applause] of the first guy Phil Hansen the left defensive end making the stop so Kansas City forced to go a long way off that favorable role from Chris Moors Pine Hill caught a let it go it went for 56 so Kansas City started at their 7 yard line and then people don't realize how hard that is on an offense through the start backed up all the time I mean that's why they came out with a pass in the first down mark but there's a statistic that shows if you make the other team go 80 yards or more seven times in a game at least seven times 95 percent of those games are just an interesting fact it doesn't mean you always will but if you do longer you make the other team go something Bad's going to happen and the Chiefs did pick up the first down just get pick it up it's a first down at the 17 yard line answer City Gone underneath man or he's going to kill you and right here they got completely mixed up on the movement Hayes was wide open Montana hit some big game they're out of a bad field position right now they're Rice and it was really effective for because it really opens up your office and let you do so many things when you have the dimension on a tight end who can catch the football and a timeout is called discussion about hamstring injuries people not familiar with the hamstring well the hamstring doctor did good is made up of muscles in the back of the upper leg and that is the main muscle team Isis with a change of direction of the ship for a loss on the play you know it kind of looks like a give up play right there Marva do you have to run the football in some of the unpredictable situations like second and we've got to keep the other team off balance or else you got to get in worse trouble how they gain nothing on the play but yet there was effective running that play believe me Joe Montana was telling us yesterday too soon two occasions with that pulled hamstring because ability eight years old it doesn't heal as cook at just the fact that way I can't do it as quickly it's a third down Tim Barnett try to make the turn and could not hold well throwing a little bit behind he started to get a little pressure that's the first time he has really had pressure on him Bruce Smith came around the outside and did put some pressure on so he had to get rid of it but that ball should have been caught but it you know what the guys trying to make a play out there it's easy to say he should have been caught he's trying to his best I don't think he would have made the first down anyway it's a lot easier up here down there I'm sure he feels a little different about it than I is a great read by Kelly because really he picks the it's really insulting coverage but he picks the man it's playing Lucius in his own he takes advantage of a cab he just runs attorney those operating out of the Thomas is stop their clogging up the lanes pretty good right now Marv but they can keep doing that they're gonna limit his effectiveness but you know it only takes one play for him to make it happen this is a buffalo franchise dramatically changed its style the previous seasons they the explosive offense now they become a defensive force bar of a ball control team that is up the hand of read incomplete and even their their short passing patterns give the effect of a ball control offense yeah I think the Grafton did we were talking to Marty about is they're not scoring as many points this year as they did last year they've been playing much better defense in our yards because the defense is getting turnovers there is a significant difference from a year ago her go hey tackle on firma tux hey one thing that's got to happen on this game mark for the Chiefs to play better defense they're gonna have to get into Kelly's faith now I'll say it's going to be hard because terry made the stop and mike that's good for 12 more I think kelly talked so much about peanuts large yesterday in the meeting you know what a great football player he's been hearing he's doing his you Kelly did everything right that you could possibly do and and and the way they designed their plays the offense and looks perfect for what they're trying to do and there's some very poor tackling there too but it's good running by Kenneth Davis good blocking by that offensive line who's playing outstanding football and given Kelly time to throw block by the white tackle the man they call house [Applause] six minutes in four seconds and here is Christie for the extra point so Kenny on that drive goes 6 / 7 Kenneth Davis finished it off by running it in from 9 yards out for 14 remaining 1st quarter the bills 7 the Chiefs nothing back to arrowhead stay in Kansas City capacity crowd better than 77,000 on hand for the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs Buffalo with a 7 nothing big Steve Christie [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all the returned [Applause] I want to show you what happened on that touchdown they ran the counter gap to the strong side metzelaars watches blocker everybody angles down you got two pullers here you got a counter step now watch what happens Metzler completely dominates Neil Smith now watch Davis maillard come around blocked and Davis does a great job of running over somebody get in the end zone Wow executed play you can't draw enough any better that you could next 13 plays a TR Buffalo had it for six minutes and four seconds Joe business he takes such pride in playing the game and in place it was such great zeal and I love to watch him play he was right exactly what they did is they load up the crotch Smith way outside turn somebody inside and then as we saw what a great throw watch it as if he throws it normally the looseness is going to knock this ball down or intercepted he threw an underneath his arm [Applause] so Joe Montana very happy about a seventh touchdown of the season Marcus Allen telling us yesterday admitting that is his final years for the Raiders he just lost his passion for the game and that he said has been his biggest asset as competitive fire but he he says now the fire is back he said it's back he said the people here are so enthusiastic about the football came through this is the great sports time for football I mean they love the Chiefs I mean we saw the show before the game here Marv it's pretty impressive everybody here has got their red and this is what the NFL should be all about this is this is an outstanding state they put a nice packet in front of their main course it helps when you have a record of 70 it helps a little bit [Applause] across the channel they talked about that I talked about special teams this is just want to I mean you can't coach this either this is strictly wanted this guy wanted more than anybody else and he's the outside guy really which is a guy that's unaccounted for you don't he peeled in and made the play great play Betty Thompson in his fourth year out of Grantland spent three years with to Kansas City five seconds left in the quarter we made it make him bounce without getting into the hall clean he got a chance he'll spit with the stop on Thurman Thomas so that's the end of one a spirited first quarter here in Kansas City will get credit for the sack again you got nobody in the backfield mob nobody I mean you got everybody coming up now it's the man-on-man situation they just beat their men Joe Phillips got put beat his man and cleanest you can be and he got around and made the play that's what you that's what you give up when you don't keep somebody in the blocking it back this could be a big turning point here Chiefs have seven defensive backs [Applause] makes the catch right near the marker Kevin Ross on the stop I think what you're going to see on this and this is just a great job by Pete staying in the seam I think we've got we got a double zone on to play and what happened you left the tight end running up through the seam did a great job an excellent job of finding the hole no actually it's not indicate that and I think if the situation dictates that later in the Kansas City might get ahead I think he might use Carter for a few offensive plays Marty said he like - he's really enthusiastic the Kansas City well what that's that's out of seven first down plays now that's six passes for Kansas City in one draw play so I would say their game plan is to throw the ball on first down and to negate the rush of the Buffalo Bills that past play going for nine it's a second and one out of the 42 just underway in the second quarter the Bills of the Chiefs are tied full force down we'll step out let's go to chip laughter in New York and we'll take you to the Kingdome to look at a little john elway magic after a scoreless first quarter Elway gets the Broncos on the board turning the Seahawk blitz into a 50-yard touchdown pass to Shannon Sharpe that makes it 7 nothing Denver over Seattle and Marv we think Mike sounds pretty good is he remembering to watch his monitor little shot from the studio from your pals it's a first down at the 47 Marcus Allen so a short pickup by Adam stop by Cornelius Bennett yes that is a a huge offensive line for Kansas City all suck run heart shields and Ziggler going up against what would have to call the other side and I think that's the reason they go they know so much straight ahead because those guys are so good it's hard [Applause] and penalty markers throw it off the movement it's a second down and seven at midfield here's Dale Hamer well start prior to the snap number 76 of the offense five yards still second down that's the something on defense and he goes with a quick pass he looked like an audible again you saw the back shift into split backs and he just hits a short 5 yard out I mean this guy is reading what he sees again that's a great job by the Kansas City lying inside I mean they're just they're just really standing up to the bucket second and three up to 32 inside the 30 to stop at a first down for Kansas City straight ahead power football and you've got to like it really second and three and I guess coaches have their own opinion what you do in that situation I think you get the first down and try to go on to the next first down situation we've been watching John all operated left tackle he has had a most interesting a series of matchups this season look at this lineup that he is faced and the only two guys that really have good games against him I mean our guys with with quickness and O'Neill Hallman bent those guys with its outstanding quickness and actually the other guys too I mean Bruce Smith or Anthony Smith Tony Bennett Quahog those guys have quickness too but he's going up against the best [Applause] now the Chiefs didn't pick up the first down John last year fought back from preseason back difficulties to earn a trip to the pro ball a six foot eight three hundred and seven pounds and his 10th season [Applause] for the Chiefs the barrage of chiefs [Applause] has the Titan Keith - who is covered by Henry Jones [Applause] marv watch how they're handling smith here all gets and watch what happens now boom boom and actually I'm not sure that that's Michael when he's in contact with somebody else that cut him below the knee but they're double-teaming most every play neutralizes while they say just short unless just outside the 20 [Applause] that is a first down Marcus Allen [Applause] I guess you would call this in-your-face power football I mean I mean I don't know if that's holding dancing or what that is that's a good tackle on go genious there but that's just right at your cloth that's you gotta love watching that stuff I do anyways and Marcus Allen is certainly getting the activity last week 16 carries like a few more than then 16 carries 78 yards two touchdowns he's handling eight times for 22 yards - kibble Anders and he's tripped up by Phil Hansen well I you know I think Marty's just done such an outstanding job here if you look at that you know and I think it's evidenced by the number of people in Stadium this stadium never sold that good he came here and they started winning football games they put on a great program him Carl Pearson have done an outstanding job here and they've brought in the players they needed to make this organization better Marty's and I think he's one of the best teaching coaches in the business as well as
