name the original building in the heart of the campus of Penn State University 1861 the first graduating class came out of this old building eleven people well today Penn State University claims over 300,000 living alumni the opponent in the football game being played on this campus today is Michigan Michigan claims more than three hundred and thirty thousand living alumni these two schools are well represented around the world now Michigan has played a thousand and ten college football games they've won seven hundred and thirty-four that's the most in Division one a Penn State is fifth among the all-time wins in this category today the Penn State Nittany Lions will have their 1,000th college football game and believe it or not finally Michigan is the opposition these two teams have never before met so come on let's go watch some college football history as ABC sports college football presents an association for the college football association a Big Ten [Music] the Penn State Nittany Lion for the next install but in our continuing feature on what he'll in the world of sports fans [Music] the Nittany Lions always formidable and especially in their Happy Valley 5 and oh this season ranked 7th in the AP poll Joe Paterno's 28th season the inaugural season for Penn State in the Big Ten Conference tied at the top of the standings with Ohio State in Wisconsin they have beaten Minnesota and Iowa and Penn State has a favorable schedule for the rest of the way especially if they can get past the Michigan Wolverines today Penn State will kick-off to the Michigan Wolverines then deep people are for Michigan or Tyrone Wheatley number six and Derrick Alexander number one and Brent Conway Lilburn Georgia kicks it off for the Lions the first time ever these fabled institutions have in the game of what and it's a good return for the Wolverines back to the 28 yard line for Derrick Alexander now the people in the trigger positions in this ball game Todd Collins number 10 you see that he's thrown only six interceptions in 279 attempts he's a junior three of those interceptions came against Notre Dame the backs and receivers in the ball game for Michigan of course Tyrone Wheatley is the key man Daring's Aleksandr is back healthy one of the best wide outs of the country when he is healthy and here's your first play of the ball as the thief man out of the formation and they send the tight-end number 80 moving behind the quarterback back and forth he goes like a windshield wiper they give the ball the Wheatley and this is a man that kept Joe Paterno and his staff awake all week long he's one of the great running backs in the country the offensive front for Michigan Runyan Miller Miglia Marinaro and Sullivan there are no returning starters in that offensive front and they have not gelled as yet but getting million injuries is a great big plus because mark is the guy that called the blocking assignments once the play has been called he's the leader of the it is a first half on the initial one bi-weekly October 41 [Music] move too soon Mike Sullivan the right side a redshirt freshman seemed to be the man who moved too soon the referee is Jim Kimberley the Penn State defense will line up with Reuben Fadi leading the four down linemen and these guys are about as good as anybody's I mean they are really outstanding two of those Misha the Penn State linebackers our exporter backs Gill Heiser and Homburg and the defensive secondary is made up of a bunch of headhunters I mean they will knock your head off if you get in their neighborhood we fashion the hip knockin football game this afternoon in Happy Valley first down at 15 after the penalty here's another flag home and the wedding way is good for the 40-yard line repeat sweetly carrying and once again the referee Jim kimerling steps up and I think this time it was Toyota Jacksons who got caught in the neutral zone offside Penn State [Applause] [Music] Gary Moeller who is a bit beleaguered this year because there was so much conversation coming into this season that Michigan was capable of challenging for the national championship but he's had so many injuries have lost so many people five linebackers alone are gone the offensive line has not come together as yet a lot of factors involved of course Joe Paterno is in fact a living legend in this part of the country John Ritchey he's in the backfield now for the Michigan Wolverines the up man number 40 and Collins first pass of the day [Applause] Eric Bana and the strong safety or the hero back as they call it guts enough of the wheat later take him down that time you saw a little bit of that turf chunk up when he made his cut Collins has got to have a good day and we mentioned in the opening that the running game needs to be productive at least to take some pressure off of him and they can't get the ball to Wheatley running the ball little swing pass as you saw that last they'll be very productive it is second down [Applause] at walrus myth in motion handy to the end John Ritchie Ritchie is a freshman from mechanicsburg PA he got away and went off to Michigan to play his football story the game for Michigan can their offensive line control a very strong and tough defensive line that defensive line is fifth in the nation against the run and for Penn State their third rushing offense in the nation against that battered Michigan front that'll be the story today Wheatley goes into a plank position J Foster is the single back read about with this align [Music] Derik at the Penn State 35 yard line first bet on Wolverine Hammond's an outstanding coverage guy this is just good coverage Hammond's can't do anything more than this three deep zone Alexander keeps it wide to the outside of the field and the bow is thrown wide it's also like a curl or it's called a wide slant or wide poles to keep it away from the free safety two for two for Colin the ball restaurant on the 35 first down for the Wolverine [Applause] mercury haze is the man in motion he's the speedster give the ball to and Richie's powers the senior route of access will pick up three yards down to the 32 yard line last week in the game and the loss at Michigan State the Wolverines ran the ball 23 times and gained a mere 33 yard 23 times in a game rushing for Michigan is an all-time record low and 33 yards production on the ground is the first time and well 28 years gained that few yardage in ball game second down and [Applause] with white outs gonna be tired time today's over [Music] certainly caught by a money number 18 the sophomore from Concord California he went down made his plant in front of Marlon Forbes the quarterback on the field side and it's another Michigan first down so they are marching down the field to well coached teams Keith and two teams offensively for Michigan they're doing what they need to do throwing the ball playing pitch and catch and running defensively for Penn State they're not doing anything aggressively setting back [Music] [Applause] weekly they'll call him down after a yard Shelley Hammonds came over Bona the strong safety committed early and plugged the inside lane before Wheatley and he had to go all the way to the sideline first possession of the game Penn State has yet to have the ball [Music] no gain on the play caught up second down and [Applause] as a single day [Applause] room in the middle and the game is to the nineteen palm bird Rob Homburg the France spirit over the Penn State from the Naval Academy and the reason he did it basically is because the cuts are being career future about 25 today [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it is his time College swanny lynn swann will Keith the official called the timeout because coming into this end zone the student section sits right to the left of the Michigan offense and they are making a tremendous amount of noise that is going to be a factor throughout the ballgame for what they're going to have to do is call the play [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] people can hear me this is the old crowd noise rule indeed the knowledge football you can hear this is what their official does first time it's a second time referees using public address announcer notify the crowd five yard penalty after exhausting in a five-yard penalty traditional time [Applause] take off my hips there is there is some kind of a there is some kinda helping address announcement [Applause] Claire [Applause] now Kimberling has said to Colin run to play [Applause] he dinner it's Penn State for the time at the charge steaming he wants to talk to the official but his time out his charge against Penn State vini on ESPN clashing in the first quarter both squads struggled with their special teams Michigan missed left on a 31-yard field goal attempt and Kent State missed right from 25 yards out yet as the first quarter progressed Penn State's field goal kicker Craig Biak redeemed himself converting on a 40-yard attempt to put the Nittany Lions on the board with the first points of the game so with the score of Penn State three Michigan nothing we now rejoin the action at the start of the second quarter right here on ESPN Classic p.m. [Music] State [Applause] thrush hasn't bothered [Applause] is a single night [Applause] forward surge may have been just enough both lines wind cave down the 30-yard strike [Applause] sixteen to the left is Gil Heiser right there yeah buddy nesting there's a look at Sandusky the defensive coordinator that's the gravy the linebackers getting to go over the top the tough work was done by the defensive line in the offensive linemen [Applause] [Applause] who've been Fadi number 55 works along the fringes along with KOCO Jackson and Eric Claire bent body is six three to seven days from Green Pond to Jersey well you don't call his name very much I can assure you that he is occupying the time and energies of two Wolverine taking his 43rd they also [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Derick fauna gets him for the cocktail that brings him down was a look at what happened in the first quarter both teams had the ball twice this pin state was 16 plays to 14 nothing really big difference in nowhere 106 yards 274 time of possession about the same no turnovers in Penn State with the one field go and both of them had a Miss defense is not playing too poorly offenses not getting it in the end zone they're down with powers Ricki [Applause] wide open it's tumor [Applause] first down Michigan [Applause] good protection for Todd Collins little play-action on third and short middle of the field was wide open and Todd Collins throwing the ball very well and getting some nice time to throw by that offensive line they Sandusky's gonna have to turn some bleachers loose here is he down guys don't seem to be able to generate much pressure if Davis [Applause] he's the sophomore out of the fort collins lets it fly Derrick to the corner no pink up there Eric Claire and knock-knock comments found that the ball is long gone tonigh Scavo Keith you're moving the ball you're inside the 45 yard line and the defense first down play-action you throw along sometimes defenses don't expect you to throw the ball deep when you get across the 45 40 yard line inside the 30 because of the back of the end zone they think you're not going to throw deep so first down pass go deep stretch them out a little bit you've been throwing underneath nice call Todd Collins first miss we use back form those in step down we must have been intended for Walter Smith he was the only Ella where was that wide receiver screen Keith and gelles Heiser number 16 saw it coming all the way watch Gayle sizer he's right here now as the lineman head out yells Heiser is gonna head right that way also and you'll see coming from the left side outside the picture he sees it all the way that could have been a nasty collision the ball rests at the 41 yard line of Michigan where it is third down and 10 for the Wolverines Penn State leading in the ball game by a score of three nothing [Applause] Cullens grows underneath the basket [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's you boa code at number 43 and one thing you can always say about a Joe Paterno coach team as they can all they will always tackle well he always has good people blocking and tackling never go beyond I mean they always got a lot of tension - blocking attack you can talk about X's and O's and nickels and dimes and spreads and all that other stuff but they'll always be able to block and tackle here all right Chris Stapleton checks in number Ten's Bobby Engram you just saw he's waiting for the punt and a CH tableful trying to hit the sales if I don't [Applause] there's a powder right [Music] each team possesses a leading rusher ball carrier and this is what the two leading ball carriers for the respective teams have done so far in the game see that Wheatley has had it six times more than Carter four times more four times when I'm sorry Carter thirty-two hey all one aware thirty-two don't think they supposed okay to the day computer is carried by Brian O'Neill who is a senior from Cincinnati and he'll pick up two yards on the carry it'll be second down and eight Cincinnati he went to the same high school as Roger Staubach Neal had some injuries earlier this summer had a foot problem and a head of disc in his back he is a tough he has a tough fullback Keith doesn't get to carry the ball enough he got three good tail backs and they got three tailbacks and three bull back Carrie [Applause] stuff into his hand whatever it takes and that'll be a first down for the net Hugh's job [Applause] [Music] that'll send you to the supper table and a woman this is patina [Applause] we'll pick up another and state first now it's just a great run Keith everything was boxed in and he just took off of the sideline he is second in the big 10 in rushing in 6th in the nation right there averaging 122 yards per game his quarterback helped him around the corner to gave his body through a block you know this offense is without their starting quarterback at the beginning of the year and one of their top wide receivers Tyson Thomas injured in Dion wide receiver not here is handed inside [Music] [Applause] or famine State [Applause] [Music] we talked about talk about the inside line back there's another play inside watch right here as a tight end is going to come and get the block and he's going to go inside but right off the tight end block Brady 81 that's powers 95 good blocking a lot of green grass and no white shirts on there for a minute wonder yep 8 carries 92 yards [Music] where's a guy like Carter misson tackle well the history dictates here at Penn State that the home crowd fully understands and will lend their Frede appreciation loudly to the running backs because they watch them I know what they can do and they're watching a good one in Kijana Carter Mike Archie is now in and he but the defense he's no bargain either he's 206 pounds Terry Collins [Music] [Applause] now his crow again inside the 35-yard line draw it down deep Engram No is his eighth touchdown in six five and a half games really outstanding 933 to play in the first half ladies Michigan Brett Conway will kick it off for Penn State as the lead by a score of ten domestic with nine and a half in the first half kid Conway Keith is a true freshman taking some of the pressure off of fayek was the number two kicker in the nation last year State Wheatly to get it he's got any [Applause] and this is how it [Applause] [Music] behind the from behind the offense it's a good cause we mentioned inside the 35 40 yard line the balls woven under thrown as Ingram's eighth touchdown reception of the year you know alfie birch kind of lost [Applause] [Music] [Applause] more sent out last year let's it go to Darren one gets up across the 35 and that'll be first I don't think so not quite a first down [Applause] now we're gonna peddle the flag can't be the clock to still have 13 seconds remaining on the step clock so here's Jim gambling to tell us what happened [Applause] here's a look at Michigan in the Big Ten this year versus last year you can see on the left side they were total defense and rushing defense the offense is down below they led in all of those categories and this year not quite as good of course they lost their entire offensive line and Elvis Grbac and the defense has been hurting with all of those injuries to the inside linebacker so it's been a little bit different than goalie [Applause] [Applause] let's it go got a man over there on the sidelines the passes completed up around the 38 yard line to Derrick Alexander the senior out of Detroit Shelly Hammonds cornerback made the hit on in number 21 Shelly how much was a running back when he first came here then he went to the defense and he went back to the offense and wound up at defense and he's a good one he's an outstanding player a couple years ago against Boston College he gained over 200 yards in the second half alone but he still wanted to play defense and that's where he is [Applause] he's gone when he made his cut not a lossless pudding turned it back inside Lee Rubin the had him in his sights he slipped as Ruben missed him but he didn't get much of the top ten today we're early so there not a lot of these games have started yet but that's a look at the AP top ten you see sports is pretty real rippers [Applause] a bunch of good ones third down at seven today [Applause] to us [Applause] finally its he's taken down at the 45 by Willis Smith an inside linebacker for Penn State and I think he got just a little short of his first down I'm really impressed way the Michigan offensive front [Applause] [Music] a few sacks with Penn State at 18 coming in that it's going to be just short Michigan good to put it away again Stapleton will be kicking - Bobby Engram Stapleton's two points 28 and 38 that's a good kick it's high anger this wall is down the inside sometimes it'll go in and sometimes it won't they did the right thing the yard [Music] the football is going to be marked and put in play from right about the five so let's call it the 5-yard line where the ball was move right in there and stop just like a good will hit 7-iron Mike Archie and John Whitman will be the running backs for Penn State now on this snap this is be careful country Penn State leading 10 to nothing Collins gives it the Archie he'd bang his way into the middle and goes to the 10 that's a five-yard pickup little more than five the other tailback for Penn State is Stephen Pitts we haven't seen him yet one of the things Michigan likes to do Keith is slant their linemen you can see it real well right here watches the white shirts will slant to our left the linebackers and fill the holes nice block there by the full-back Whitman Penn State's ready for that slam Archy again trying to bounce outside can't get away Bobby powers a good play for the junior from River Ridge Louisiana powers is an overachiever he's an outstanding young man he's six foot only 231 pounds 13 tackles last week against Michigan State and he's one of those linebackers that are filling in on the inside in there for Michigan loss on the play to make it a third down and six now as O'Neill comes back into the backfield he's a good pass receiver [Applause] Gary Collins couldn't find anybody to throw to turns it upfield runs it out of bounds and that was trying to get the ball to the 15 which is where he had to go for his first down laureen's would not let him get there more than anything Keith that's a safe call when you're backed up in your own endzone you get outside you're not going to get sacked in the end zone first of all and secondly you get outside where you can see and not throw any receptions Vijay Mozilo comes in a junior from Long Branch New Jersey that number one you just saw dropping back as Derrick Alexander he's gonna give Michigan very good field position to be handled football Lucilla's putt is out of there Alexander takes it at the 48 yard line [Music] [Applause] Michigan 48-yard foot return but there the Wolverines get a big play special teams both teams are very good at returning kicks [Applause] number 52 but Smith Willie Smith the linebacker backup linebacker for Penn State can't bring them in like turn that thing around yeah it's gonna take him some time yep this is Elizabeth for the extra point [Music] and it's good he hooks up it [Applause] at 5:14 to go in the first half it's now attend the seven ball game Penn State Michigan schedule is gonna Dane they ranked third or fourth in the country Michigan three and two coming into the state and the ball the Pyro's wheatley as he's got about six hours Penn State does not play Wisconsin the Badgers name and that future alignment for them and they finished the season at Michigan State which couldn't be a bump in a row but their first problem right now is to win this game Michigan Wolverines laden with history you know they played in the very first collegiate bowl game back in 1902 the Rose Bowl fielding Yost's lads defeated Stanford 49 to nothing that was what set in motion ostrich racing and Chariot Racing [Applause] man hurt Harry killings committed Tyrone Wheatley and Wheatley is stuck just short at the 30 yard line now here's Lynn Swann with a report on Michigan's halftime message Keith I talked to cam Cameron the offensive coordinator he said of course they want to stop the penalties they said they need better blocking from the right side of their offensive line and the only thing that Penn State's doing that they had not anticipated was a nickel defense with that fifth defensive back floating in the middle on the defensive side they feel that could just need to tackle better but they are feeling the pressure of Penn State going after their inside linebackers alright swanee that's Derek Bona down on the field shaken up on the last play it would appear that he wanted none of his appendages are damaged though he's pointing to his right ankle apparently that's the problem let's take a look at the first half offensive leaders for Michigan Todd Collins played well 99 yards Wheatley ran 472 Alexander had four catches for 48 yards Alexander had the punt return for the touchdown first half possessions they had five of them they really didn't do a lot after the first possession of ten plays as I mentioned the touchdown that Michigan had was a punt return by Derrick Alexander Eric Bona is walking off the field four-year starter tough guy yeah he is a [Applause] first intend for the Michigan Wolverines and ster Wheatley and weekly we'll have fun hi oka Jackson most of that sample you can see Wheatley expressing himself walking back to the huddle looking for some fire after it's been a little flat after last week when he played Michigan State with that stunt for three of George perlis he only gained the 33 yards all day today he's got some Running Room and he's pretty excited about [Applause] Wheatly again at the 43-yard 44 yard line lift Dingell making the tackle for Penn State he's open place of Derek bunny [Applause] number 46 we just saw there a moment ago is another great story at the Penn State Marlin for local yeah and it was on a Navy ROTC scholarship get that it finally got the starting [Applause] on first down [Applause] for 43 yard line of Penn State Billiam or Kony voted down he's the junior from Mario take a look at penn state defensively in the big 10 they leads in the defensive categories six out of seven of categories they are number one so this drive of Michigan going against a very good Penn State defense [Applause] and the offensive line surge with powers caring's pretty good the offensive front for Michigan has played quite well today Thank You number forty you see there John Richie the fullback from Michigan he's from Pennsylvania right around here as you take a look at ty oka number 97 right there Jackson plays off of Jenkins number 97 the thing about it Keith even when Penn State is making a play they're still falling [Applause] get six in a row [Applause] and this time it's Ricky excuse me and biopic Jackson one more time Aoki is from Forestville Maryland as we said earlier in the first half very good defensive football where it's six to 265 pounds but Jackson is a defensive end and sometimes colleges will list these guys as defensive tackles of [Applause] I think it just sounds better to him mr. say now be sure you here the defensive end there's a defensive tackle sometimes telling a big sack fail physics in that Russia's the pastor Delhi Suri [Applause] - the Lions 29 yard line of the Wolverines may have something going here [Applause] we say he's a pass rusher he gets upfield here tyr's LJ cos 97 just takes him out the play went inside of him of course his responsibility on that play was containment and he certainly did turn the thing in hours again never really got started sort of stumbled or before he got to the line of scrimmage will pick up maybe three yards on the carry and the Michigan offensive line doing a very good job in this possession against the Penn State defense correct Keith doing a nice job Runyon 6957 is Miller Neely of the Center number 67 has been out the last two weeks with an injury and having him back difference in the line [Applause] they doesn't get it all that many times but he punches inside the 24 Derek fauna has not returned the lineup as yet at quarterback offense a jury standing however on the sidelines there's a look at Gail sizer number 16 the inside linebacker he was a that's why he's got Highschool Pennsylvania [Music] [Applause] yes and they're going [Music] bread 94 [Applause] [Music] and they changed this rule a couple of years ago that if there is any doubt as to whether the arm was coming forward or whether it wasn't that it was going to be an incomplete pass [Applause] about it sorta reminds me at that time when the chest of [Laughter] this is man sign [Applause] is respond and to some wind to in his face penalty flag [Music] and see about the thing gonna be against Penn State it was fourth and five offside against Penn State there's a look at the breeze pretty good breeze it's going mostly it's quartering but it's coming but anything gets coming at the kicker question is is that enough for a first time take a look at the bottom of your screen Penn State [Applause] first down that's like a turnover right there certainly is it is a first down critical mistake right there Illya was Hammond and get some pressure well in the last two weeks the turtles troops have blocked two kicks and they've [Applause] [Applause] fellers [Applause] what's happening what's happening here Keith is Collins is checking all a great deal Gretchen my left turn around [Applause] at least 11 this is weekly and they stop in at the 16th so they'll be looking at third and about eight I think with Jenkins in the ball game number 77 Roselle Jenkins the Michigan offensive front may be functioning just a little bit better of course they've got Melia back this week to rot pain at the step in their last week I think Melia back at center is making a big difference as far as the line call [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I couldn't tell it [Music] [Applause] well here he is here he's going to go down and run and they think the man that you were just talking about fauna is right here and he's going to get beat to the corner the outside man runs a little out to occupy the corner the slot man Hayes runs an out pattern that is Bona number 35 who just came back in after that ankle Levesque is in for the point and it's good and the michigan wolverines for the first time today [Applause] pulled against penn state of offside that gave him the light on the first down [Applause] who don't scoring drive you see there but biggest play [Applause] sorry that was a good call there's no doubt about it that Penn State had stopped him and it's like a turnover like we said that was an 80-yard Drive first drive of the second half to Michigan and they had missed the field goal try oh yes it's big so Michigan lead 14 to 10 Hamilton gets it off and the Tartar wait for it visit Ian's own no return oh that one here's another look at the touchdown [Applause] Heys is number nine the inside receiver outside receivers going to break out just to occupy the outside corner bottom number 35 is just out of this out of the picture to the right side right there all snow to the late it could have been there sooner nice cats official is there Vishal is there doing his job there's another look at it there's the short receiver breaking out to occupy Forbes number 46 ball has thrown to the deep man is he in yep look at that nice call by the official knee goes down and critical possession of the ball yep this is Kijana Carter for Penn State and Michigan gets in it about the 26 yard line dijanna six yards on that Gary I'm trying to fight back now down 14 to 10 with 5 minutes and 20 seconds by of the third quarter chief Jackson Bob Griese and Lynn Swann miss Pelican and if you wonder why Joe might have some gray hairs is because of that last series he had him stopped they were going to go for the field goal they missed the field goal he jumped offsides and then they get the touchdown harder hit the line of scrimmage turns it up for a couple of yards with Mike Archie in the backfield now number two good receiver Archie Terry Coleman we she's writing a playbook again as a look at Lloyd card offensive coordinator for the University of Michigan he's been trying everything this year to hold this defense together as we mentioned if you weren't with us at the beginning five inside linebackers are hurt and out including Steve Morrison the leading tackler from last year and also this year before he was injured Freddie Scott who comes from Southfield Michigan number 31 as in as the white out bus picture and Collins back looks for him and lets it go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to play football at Penn State [Applause] big play for the net alliance [Applause] it's single coverage again Michigan trying to stop the run with ten [Applause] situations can't tell from their mother [Music] [Applause] the only thing that you might see there is the you can't see the left hand I don't know where the left hand is the left hand is is not on him it was earlier it was earlier yet him before them from those shots that we saw it was hard to see if there was anything there but doesn't matter too late now but every time they throw why they're getting one on one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to completion with Grady and the Nittany Lions of trying to respond the Michigan touchdown ran gainer there on the left the offensive coordinator Joe let him call the plays for a while and then you say well let me let me take it over for a while as you live it Florida out in front of a thousand nuts Bobby Jerry you'll get Bobby later on in the year [Music] pull back and that's a loss on the play as Garrett irons number 37 and Trevor price number eight make the tack and second away we go to John Saunders kids do you know Michigan and Penn State have their eyes on the Rose Bowl how about Wisconsin Darrell Bevell 19 yards to mark Montgomery they lead Purdue 28 nothing bevels 12th touchdown pass of the year and they're undefeated key [Music] [Applause] [Applause] like Archie and Brian O'Neill [Applause] and lets it fly it was late [Applause] [Music] look to be like to be a very good call to like long hitting for boy even got there [Applause] twice in this penn state possession [Applause] [Music] pressure I couldn't really tell from that [Applause] pass interference on the defense first down official that called that play was probably the same one that made the call down in the endzone for the touchdown permission I'm not sure about that but he won't get a Christmas card compiled off 22 this is Archie started again and that second start got it about four yards total of about six on the parish let's go back and take a look see if we can see anything differently [Applause] that's still it's really hard to tell we didn't see the whole thing the official was there check it down call it five [Applause] [Applause] Michigan man taken up the defenders on that corner took a couple of hits and then these two that's people look like [Applause] take a look at the offensive line for stand-up for Penn State that's the 81 is Brady blocking on Stanley O'Neil out there the full-back nice block by Brady he's a 256 pounds at six six blocking on Stanley who's about to 83 and the tight end won that one how would you like to have a tight end way of 256 at the conclusion of the ball game today as we have been doing for a quarter century the Chevrolet most valuable players will be chosen from each team with each University getting $1,000 from Chevrolet for its general scholarship fund time remaining in the third quarter to 24 timeout for the injured player and it's a 14 to 10 Michigan lead the injury is to Matt Dyson number 91 and the problem is his own teammate is going to come from the left side as this play develops and roll right into him that's Henderson 79 and those types of things are just going to happen sometimes in football you just they just can't be avoided he's walking off gingerly but he's had problems all year and he is one of their best players he was an All Big Ten player last year that's a big loss for him loose oh yeah they've lost those five inside linebackers this is a Morrison Marcus Walker Dave the breath Redmond Thomas and they hold of all gold [Applause] and its first down [Music] [Applause] penn state i [Applause] when you have three high-quality tailbacks get it down to this point of the game we sold a conversation on the other side Paterno's talking to ganon urns just saying Alyssa just don't do anything fancy just run it in if he takes two or three plays we got a first down don't take any chances easy handoffs we just watched it that's down yes what's fried on the fullbacks with Archie at the table back in the line [Applause] O'Neil and time the Kerry Collins were not on the same page Collins all the time sometimes part of the problem is on the bench over there getting the play in too slowly are sending the substitutes in and then by the time you get out there and get the line get up to the line of scrimmage you don't have that much time so in deciding which play or which personnel use up all the [Music] 1:39 left to play in the third quarter Penn State with a threat here sitting just inches away from the Michigan goalie these are games that offers the ticket to the Rose Bowl games as they come along you see that on October 30 Penn State and Ohio State in Columbus on the same day Arizona and UCLA that game could become enormous in the pac-10 and of course Michigan Wisconsin with the Badgers undefeated and then the 6th of November at Madison Ohio State those calling against those cops Mo's yellow numbers on there are the rankings of the teams Arizona does not play Washington this season see la gave is coming up later on some of your ABC stations and on all right Penn State fine [Applause] one of us speaks the are most he almost didn't get that ball Keith sure looked like he was reaching 14 I've said it before what happens is the center duck says we're in to go block the quarterback does a double take Michigan defensive line good surge there this is all you want to do straight ahead especially if it's first and go on the you can do this again back straight ahead he's not moving anybody in there no this is good tough football and this is what you expect from a guy it's been the same for this era whatever if there was ever a big ugly game this is it down in the trenches no Bates Walker gets a piece toppled on those hell sir [Applause] why did they give it to you in the first down he the one [Music] either there's no question you go for it on at least you leave them down there on the one foot line but I think this time I dry something on the corner started I wouldn't pull anybody but I'd try something on the corner Joanne Whitman comes in now he's the blocks the better block [Music] [Applause] Station but here from the old school and you come up the tough way the hard way you run the two plays inside of the quarterback sneak I think that's right then you try and send the tailback over the top I think that was the right call and now I think you go off the corner either either Roy your quarterback out Dyson is back in which is good news for Michigan you roll your quarterback out to the wide side which is left and you got a right-handed quarterback or you give it to your tail back off the corner but you don't pull anybody out of the line because defensive men will run through [Applause] six inches [Music] the curtain left act right time [Applause] [Music] has been kicked around and good events this year but this time there who was trusted is forward he's going to get in there nobody's gonna blocky write down the man in the secondary [Applause] [Applause] just to the it was sweet to the outside [Music] [Applause] the clock never moved [Music] doesn't [Applause] this is still a critical time right here now I mean in state still has its where the ball is and he got him on the one-yard line Michigan needs to do something to get this ball out of there it's not the one-yard line it's less than that it's [Applause] touching the goal [Applause] they gonna take some time here to adjust the clock because it had to use some time on that fourth down plate Penn State had 13 plays no points and the Michigan defense is really jacked right just take a look at this here are the two inside tackles now let me show you what they're going to do they're going to slam to the outside all the defensive men are going to slant outside and the two linebackers are going to step up in the inside now what that does is if you're trying to run the ball here everybody's sliding to the outside you miss half your blocks so Lloyd Carr defensive coordinator was guessing they weren't going to run the quarterback sneak up the middle if they would have run the ball up the middle before the linebackers got there the quarterback would have been in but that's what you guess on the islands you pinch some and you slant him out some and that time he guessed right [Applause] but they've run off three seconds on the clock it is now ten seven that game is being played at over Kansas State [Applause] maybe near the one-yard line he is a true freshman and he is from right around here yeah he was recruited very heavily by Penn State has some bunch of family and friends he said he didn't expect them to be rooting for Michigan State but I mean Michigan the Penn State was one of the schools he visited [Applause] these slams up to the three so it'll be third down about eight and Wheatley now on 21 carries has 101 yards [Applause] Ryan Monaghan say Newton what's the VA thirty-six [Applause] to real estate through the middle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Reuben the free safety number 39 [Applause] it's pause a second and look at the numbers after three quarters pretty much the same Penn State has eight more plays 51 to 43 and a few more yards no turnovers in the game in the time of possession pretty much the same Michigan punting team coming in stapled [Applause] but at four times today the last one was 66 yards that is I mentioned Penn State has bought two kits [Applause] but for the return no block didn't get all angry for the good separates against [Applause] hi I have an apology to me that's me in the sedan the one who caused the Gawker slowdown on your way to that client dykes on ESPN Classic took a look at they quarterback comparison both the Collinses Todd on the left from Michigan is 12 or 15 and a hundred and twenty-eight in a touchdown carry 10 of 19 in 140 pretty similar results on first and ten Terry Collins and they take him out of bounds just about the line of scrimmage Bobby powers would have none of it he Bowers was right on his heels the whole time it'll bring up second down to look at Bobby powers what is Michigan done here in the second half to shut down the Penn State running inside the powers is playing better at andirons the other inside linebacker is has ten tackles on the day throw that the alleged weakness of Michigan has not powers step again throwing up this time could lady the tide in pick up is about six yards on the quick pop Shantae people's takes him down strong safety normally you'll find the strong safety shadowing that idea Keith one of the other things you do is you blitz this linebacker that was the Lud that the linebacker and he's going to pop the tide in right in the area where the linebacker I think it was powers this time and Brady saw him blitz so did Collins and he popped him in the open area [Applause] my car emotion going in this series [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] that's the wide receiver screen with the Lyman jumped in behind the lineman but Keith this is really a take a look from from behind watch the linemen on the left side pick at 79 the all going downfield hello he just dodged that defensive lineman that was coming back and so they moved the chains and on first down this is my car [Applause] [Music] at the 17 this drive is really a continuation of the one that got stopped a few minutes ago because Penn State defensively stopped Michigan on three downs forced him to punt it they took over on the 39 yard line of Michigan now they're just picking this drive up again I'll tell you what clear he was a fire guard well he has the fresh laked I think Carver in the first half kind of ran out of gas because he ran so much look at this that's Bobby powers having to come off the field now he's very very big in the second and third quarters of that [Applause] [Music] he's got it again this time jason horns searches him out and brings him down and he did not from it the first half it'll be third and about that's at least a yard mr. yard can have [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] all this is next for Alabama too third down at least one RG ten yard line [Applause] [Music] he's a founder we give credit to the offensive line the Harding's and Rivera on the strong side of that line number 15 as you see there's Harding's really the center powers attempt to come out again - vacation with a pin and inside the 10 he picks up the better part of five yards on that carry sometimes keep it's easier as you take a look at Penn State rushing Carter is 120 Archie now has picked up 42 a lot of that sometimes when you get inside the 20 it's easier to score the further away from the goal line that you are so when you get full so the choices are lots of tests show that Mills carrying the ball there and not much for him he bangs into the middle and then surges to the left and trying to ride behind Rivera and Harding's ball is put now at the 8 yard line they've got to go inside they need the headmistress so when that all offensive goes all offensive lineman's partings in Rivera [Applause] Archie and mill lined up behind Terry Collins [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he was lucky to get this ball away as a blitz the to date on the laughter come again but and birch [Applause] who can face guard in college you certainly can no foul they're nice ketchup nice no call by the official 25-yard field goal from 25 the first quarter made from 40 this room mister where's the one with 851 35 yard line for the kickoff Alexander's number 1 for a touchdown earlier today 14 to 13 Michigan leading and that kick will go out of bounds 4:35 Michigan will half the ball out here they foster in Taiwan Michigan leading by one this procession from the and weakness across the 40 under get him up to about the 43 this is the best starting point for a Michigan possession today whoa 14 to 10 Auburn Auburn Auburn has really had a week schedule but nothing weak about Florida can't see him though their own probation they elected to take their penalty this year Oh TV [Applause] almost contact along the line of scrimmage and man at the line of scrimmage just took his leg away and picks up the first down Gail Spicer now has 14 technicals in the ballgame it's a quarterback ex-quarterback you like to see that tonight now you a quarterback sir he's a leading tackler coming in mentioned earlier about Jim Kelly and Joe Paterno we had lunch with him yesterday was telling us about he's really he said is enjoy I mean Jim if you don't play quarterback there's other positions you could try be alive did well [Applause] all is handed by thought Collins Tyrone Wheatley and number 89 Eric Claire is right there when the handoff occurred and there's no gain we haven't called the names of Jackson Claire and Ben Fadi a whole lot today but as we said there's a reason why at Penn State the line backers gets em into tackles and normally the reasons are those three big dudes hunkered down in the trenches in front of fest that is so true and the premier position here at this defense his linebacker it's like the old days at Southern Cal was the tailback Wheatly again [Applause] to the fire just enough of his shirt [Applause] [Music] State 6e and this could be the marketplace right here is this a big play Michigan needed to do something of course 39 Reuben is going to come and make the play but watch the blocking ahead now get caught from behind very often watch mover number a shortcut [Applause] [Music] in a davis he comes off the pinch ice cold and they stick it in his hands and he is brought down by Brian Monahan number 36 Wheatley out getting a breather 26 carries on 167 watch them watch the block of Foster number 33 the full-back on Dingle to help set it loose right there bingo was coming up making the force that Wheatley hasn't been caught from behind more than two or three times in his career [Applause] [Music] [Applause] calendar says wrong here I'm not paid to make these decisions straight to the coach six minutes even to play in the game 6 / x 1 alright class was about to run out that's why [Music] [Applause] now Michigan has the ball second down always over here the 7-yard line at the tailback position Michigan [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we've given them all up [Music] maybe just inside the five and they'll unwrap them and find Eric Claire with his arms wrapped around the legs of Tyrone Wheatley I'm sure that molar would have loved to have seen Wheatley score that touchdown when he was running free that's why that tackle by Reuben if he would have scored a touchdown they've been up by eight points now he still got to get it in there and he's field goal puts him up by four [Applause] but you don't want to lose the field goal by doing anything silly down here but his field goal kickers missed twice today already [Music] [Applause] here's foster right here the tight ends going to go in here and take all the defenders with you and right out here in the flat go to fake it up the middle tight in takes three guys with him that's a hell of a call right there Elisabet for the point [Applause] you've got five minutes in 12 seconds [Applause] the CSP it's a happy sideline fosters the man who caught the touchdown pass and the Michigan will kick it off now to Penn State and state will have Shelley Hammonds and Kijana Carter as the beat people Hammonds was involved in a most critical play in which Michigan took the lead that caught him off sides instead of missed field goal a bullet down all of a sudden Michigan got a first down and stuck it in the end zone you know he wants to do something to make up for that buddy these two guys are dangerous back here running this kickoff back now the ball keeps rolling off the tee that's the third time it's happened five twelve to play at the ball game now they're probably somebody come over Walter sit the Mormon hold it possessed the pack [Music] the record of five and Oh Michigan three and two coming off a loss at Michigan State last week when it's a kid witness gave they may say the seasons the touchdown pass his first of the season and only his third catch of the year that may be why he was so wide open [Applause] [Applause] [Laughter] all right here's the hi [Music] [Applause] no return after the 2002 thumb first now let's go back and take a look at the series when penn state could not get in this a first play the defensive line is pinching quarterback sneak no gain defensive line is everybody did and quarterback sneak no gain third play give it to the tailback Oh game [Applause] and because the line was slanting out there were several missed walks and Penn State didn't score they did come back to next series and get a field goal but no touchdown now Kerry Collins pitches outside the Kijana Carter Carter who's up for the 26 yard line second down and four coming up but the point is Bob the Michigan defense which has been the soft spot on the team as truly surely stepped up today it's a big point Keith if Michigan goes on to win this game and Dyson is back on the field it'll be because of that defensive stand down there on the goal line and it may carry him the rest of the season we talked about the beginning this was going to be a character check for Michigan Terry Collins down the middle [Applause] had been no turnovers so far today on first down Kerry Collins to the sidelines little off the hands on Justin Williams number 27 he had a man short of Williams he chose Williams and he couldn't get to him I don't know that wind may be strong enough to be affecting a ball thrown in that direction because the flags are just stiff they are at the top of the stadium and whenever somebody kicks off from left to right into the wind it's always been a squib kick four minutes in 22 seconds to play in a bowl game 21 13 Michigan leading [Applause] all is at the 42 for Penn State and turned up field got away with it Pass is thrown to Bobby 20 how does that win feel to you on the sidelines day well the winds blowing right into the Penn State offense Keith and sometimes it'll change direction and be blowing from left to right so it can definitely affect the pass thrown on the line to the sideline third and ten coming up the last two passes by Kerry Collins have not been very pretty and he's going into that Brees whatever you know the consistent wind is not bad but when it swirls is tough [Applause] throws to the sidelines I won't get it done oh that's five yards off he threw it all the way across the field of chip La Barca and it's 4th down and 5 [Applause] did you go here four minutes in ten seconds and do they put it yeah and is too soon [Applause] Lucilla's fourth kick of the day [Applause] Eric Alexander counting people he wants all a healthy together we grab that ball it takes a straight sideways bounce and crystals out of bounds at about the 41 yard line so put it on the 20 now for Michigan and all they want to do is fit it around all down come pick up a first-timer stance Baylor the first step Phase III they could probably run [Applause] [Music] I earn weekly loss is the 35 gets to the 36 a 16-yard pickup for weekly cliff dingo the tackle and here's Lynn again well Keith when we started the ballgame one of the stories was this sod field that was rolled in just three weeks ago and throughout this ball game that was held up tremendously well every once in a while when the player makes a cut on what is a seam it lifts up just a bit if I shoot the look at this field it's in great shape weight these days [Music] but it again to the 40 that's about a three and a half four yard pickup TRUCKING long at three playing the game 21:13 Michigan and Florida has come back to leadoff in 2214 there's a field goal and the Mystics the point there both teams have two timeouts left I guess they kick [Applause] sweetly [Applause] this is very simple old basic philosophy right here when you've got a good horse riding and that's what they're doing I'm permitting we'll have the thrifty Car Rental postgame report flow yield scores and highlights lock continues to run 2:35 they'll need another maybe to go first down see the clock [Music] [Applause] to see their team to go davus Vanessa for [Applause] don't need the teens the Chevrolet most valuable players of the game are Tyrone Wheatley 29 carries on 190 yards of Miss still some time left Brian Gill had gelts Heiser 14 tackles for Penn State he's play the Super Bowl game and with the ball resting at the 45 of Penn State a timeout is charged to Michigan as Sean Miller shaken up and the left guard has to come out [Applause] an offensive line in michigan we we said coming in it would be critical going against the penn state line they've answered the questions about that and Gary Moeller with a what I think an outstanding call down here Keith the touchdown pass to shave foster only his third reception of the year Forest Penn State to go for a touchdown and not a field goal and it's is a big guy Foster the full-back he's of 240 pound sophomore and he's down close to the 40-yard line now Penn State's gonna have to start spending their time's up well fence title unless something terribly dramatic happens we problem with a loss Ohio State playing Michigan State later they're in for pretty good late Wisconsin's gone away and they're gonna be three and old we know that so either Ohio State or Michigan State their numbers will change before the supper-table for them well as we said the Michigan had their backs to the wall this is a critical game they had to win to stay in the race they've done that Penn State with a loss is not out of the race and Wisconsin going to three and O is as they're tough from tougher games ahead of them this is Davis carrying a sophomore from Detroit East at the 38 yard line Tyrone Wheatley is on the sidelines right now he has a hundred and ninety yards to the ball game today the last division 1a player to rush for 200 yards of the ball game Bobbie Humphrey 1987 versus Penn State you got to give credit than that offensive line Runyan Miller Miglia Marinero and Sullivan and also Jenkins so the Nittany Lions as you see your top ten they're gonna probably tumble out of the top ten depending on what happens in the games behind not necessarily but they're certainly about to absorb worse loss in talking with the paternal yesterday he said you know we don't know about our team you know we played some teams this were stepping up a notch in caliber to play Michigan they really didn't know how good a team they had but I'd I'd say they looked very much like a Big Ten team right here tough physical you know defense run the ball special teams ninety six thousand seven hundred and nineteen people came to see it they saw [Music] hit him hard buckle down game Wheatly is back in the lineup it is third down and three Todd Collins gives up the Wheatley he cuts it back into goes for the marker and he's close but he's not quite there so it'll be fourth I think and a half a yard Penn State has used its last time I don't have any more they can't stop the clock anymore it is fourth down in a short one and Michigan it will probably go for it and if they get it that was surely sealant as the clock continues to tick away I think it's a good call I think it's a good call going for it you go turn the ball over if you pun it you may not if you run for it you don't make it the field positions not that bad [Applause] it was wheatley carrying and the clock power will stop a two-second [Applause] penn state say they didn't make it so does Jim Kelly actual official State will [Applause] Michigan sale the pickup that when you their scheme aim is not over down eight points they have 52 seconds and no timeouts remember in college football's of until they moved to change [Applause] [Music] came out did it all came out [Applause] came over and worked it [Applause] [Music] and complete both quarterbacks the Collins boys have thrown the ball very well this blow is right on target it looks like a completion to me and a fumble couldn't see though from the other side he may have been juggling it [Applause] the ball is on the 35 at its second out of ten [Music] though the Penn State Nittany Lions need a miracle was 40 seconds mr. Brady Brady [Applause] you can't be throwing the ball - you're tied in and filled in this situation [Applause] [Applause] that'll be a first ban the fastest part by Stephen Pitts out of the backfield [Applause] that should move the change and it also stops the clock with 18 seconds to play we showed Geographic earlier Penn State is last in the conference in passing the football they came in averaging 157 yards a game that been mean he can't duel they just preferred a runner [Applause] [Music] he sits there [Applause] [Music] [Applause] first of the year Michigan is over and to very much at the race to the Roseville 96,000 [Applause] nineteen new record crowd what's the game they start a mile away those of you at home look ahead to the games that are coming next to your area [Applause] very important game just as important as this one probably will do justice good as this one has been we'll take away [Applause] defeating Penn State [Applause] sports it
