against the 49ers this has been a busy couple of weeks for Chargers head coach Dan hemming and GM Bobby Beathard there was the trade of unhappy Pro Bowl lineman Lee Williams to Houston Marion but second leading rusher in the AFC last year was a holdout for almost all of the preseason last year's starting quarterback Billy Jo Tolliver lost his job to untested John fries and then was subsequently traded to Atlanta then this past Tuesday Henning fired his offensive coordinator Ted toner and assumed those responsibilities for himself joining us now from San Francisco is former NBC insider now GM of the Chargers Bobby Beathard Bobby this club has been 6 and 10 three consecutive years Dan Henning has made some moves which could be called controversial is he on thin ice himself well I think Dan knows his position and that's been written of about several times here in San Diego but I think Dan he's a bright guy he knows what it's like to be an NFL coach and and not win so I think he's a heck of a coach we're trying to give him give him all the support we can right now and with all the distractions or would seem like distractions I think Dan's held the squad's attention quite well and probably had our best week coming into this 49er game is it fair to say though that this is a make-or-break year for him but another 6 and 10 or a 7 and 9 would put him in jeopardy I think it's more how we play if we don't play hard if we play well and lose close games and make look like we've made progress I think then after the season we'll make that we'll evaluate the whole situation and see then I think it's too early to say the Cowboys supposedly had made an overture to Ted toner to be their offensive coordinator so his duties were upgraded before this year then after the first game Dan has a change of heart toner is fired were you uneasy with the way that situation came down even though you supported Hennings right to make the move well I think it was uneasy for everybody around here I went to school with Ted and this should not be a black mark on Ted toners coaching he's a terrific coach a dedicated coach and I think he has a bright future in this league what happened it's I kind of compared it with would you would you ever see Joe Gibbs giving up the offense to one of his assistant coaches that just wouldn't happen cuz Joe feels comfortable in there with him he's a hands-on coach well Dan's very much like that and he kind of divorced himself from the offense and was kind of an overseer and I don't think it's sat right with Dan I don't think he felt comfortable and there was a little bit of philosophical difference between Ted and Dan it wasn't the matter of one's a good coach and one is and obviously Billy Joe Tolliver was not your guy you didn't draft him John Freeze was a draft choice of yours you preferred as a talent evaluator freeze-over Tolliver so Tolliver is demoted and then dealt but the question is after getting a fourth round pick from Atlanta that could be upgraded depending upon how he plays to a third do you second-guess yourself from maybe making the deal too quickly because in week 1 Cunningham goes down Craig goes down and guys like Pat Ryan and rusty Hilger gets signed if you'd held Tolliver back a while it seems like his value would have jumped well it was the feeling of the staff that if this happened if John fries did win the quarterback battle then Billy would not be the type of guy to stay around in a backup role and I don't mean that a knock against Billy is a very competitive kid a tough kid but that was a decision made before that even happened and actually it's a fifth-round choice that could be a fourth they don't have a fifth right now so it's a fourth but when they get their fifth will get a fifth for him it was we put ourselves in a pretty in a precarious position John not having much experience Bob Galliano a veteran behind him so we're training Jeff Graham on the developmental so we hope in time that we are injury free and come back with three quarterbacks that can win games for us but right now we're in a pretty tough position Bobby thanks a lot good to talk with you again
