for over 50 years these railroad tracks first the northwestern now the Norfolk Southern have been transporting goods from the southeast part of the country to other parts of the nation you can almost feel the history associated with these tracks at the same time there's a piece of real estate about 25 feet from these railroad tracks it also represents another part of Americana first built as a dirt track in 1947 now it's one of the finest pavement tracks in the country here's dr. Jerry punch for nearly four decades the fans have enjoyed coming to this picturesque facility in Martinsville Virginia from its manicured grass to its brightly painted curbs promoter H Clairol described a bill one of America's premier short track show places but don't let looks fool you with just 12 degrees of banking and a combination of concrete and asphalt in the turns this track is one of the toughest it takes a very special man to conquer this place one man has done that 15 times well Jerry of course you're talking about the King 54 year old Richard Petty won his first race on pavement right here in Martinsville 1960 his 15th win here coming in 1979 but the guy's been tearing it up is three years younger than Richard and he's standing by with a couple of younger drivers here's the fella everyone's talking about three Winston Cup victors in a row Harrigan hey hey I got me a uniform can I Drive the seat belt around you what are we to see Bo repay to drive this car you know you like you need to Major Lazer's their wages that's it well what about now wait a minute Bill's I can get in my uniform here I like getting this thing here I'm still in my fifties and I believe I could drive this thing I want you to take it okay I think it'd be fun little apart me bow Harry understand this is about to you I wonder if I could take a couple up with you night how was your first get out here how is your first [Music] P n the world's leader and Motorsports coverage protects speech world today live from Martinsville Speedway in Virginia it's the goodies 500 Winston Cup race and you could ask for more beautiful weather cool temperatures bright sunny skies and no chance of rain good afternoon everybody I'm Bob Jenkins and welcome to Martinsville the 24th race of the Winston Cup season for 1991 we have the third tightest point battle in NASCAR history going on the quest for the Cup standings show you that Ricky Rudd is only 36 behind Dale Earnhardt some bad luck by Ernie Irvan Davey Allison and Mark Martin have caused them to fall in the point standings when you talk about luck though there's one guy that's stealing the thunder from the points race for more on that here's Ned and Benny Perry again is definitely the talk of Winston Cup race he has won three straight the wild hare has been winning three straight the points battle some fellows have just went away Mark Martin has fallen out of the last three races he's now 335 points behind you got to cross him off Davey Allison troubling two out of three he's now 205 points behind it's an uphill struggle and Ernie Irvan Christ last week he's 177 behind I don't think Evans got a chance Ned I think it's number two car race for the championship I think you're right baby but you know Ricky Rudd needs to win here or cook for next week if he has the chance we know why and why a Winston Cup champion has not won the championship in the modern era with house winning on a short track and Dale Earnhardt is the only one of those in the top four that's one on the short track this year I think it's going to you know play a factor here you know baby feels good to get in these uniforms again zone ain't it you look pretty good might I say you both look marvelous as we get set for racing here at Martinsville let's take a look now at the diehard starting lineup for today's race the pole position belongs to Mark Martin his third in a row here at Martinsville in the Folgers Ford at ninety three point one seven one alongside his Brett Bodine in the Quaker State Buick car number 26 in the second row it's Darrell Waltrip in the Western on O Chevrolet car number 17 and alongside second in points two-time winner here at Martinsville Ricky Rudd from speak Virginia in the tied Chevrolet number five then Dale Earnhardt the points leader in the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet and Alan Kulwicki in the hooters Ford car number seven going a row number 4 it is Rusty Wallace from st. Louis Missouri to Miller Genuine Draft Pontiac car number 2 and Kyle Petty in the mellow yellow' Pontiac car number 42 in the fifth row you'll find Ken Schrader in the number 25 Kodiak Chevrolet and Morgan Shepherd in the motor craft for car number 15 the sixth row consists of Bobby Hamilton one of the rookie candidates in the country time Oldsmobile car number 68 and then Harry Gant in the skull Bandidos will be car number 33 as Harry goes for his fourth consecutive Winston Cup win let's take a look at the rest of the starting lineup here you can see that some of the top competitors are in the middle to lower portions of the starting thread 32 cars at all will take the green flag in just a moment and begin 500 laps of competition above all of those from 17 film fact will be pitting on the backstretch today there are some good drivers over there that maybe have cars capable of winning this race today but pitting on the backstretch will be a disadvantage for them car may be awesome estate Becker Davey Allison of course comes into this event as the fourth in the Winston Cup points 200 by behind the leader Dale Earnhardt here's Richard Petty who begins in row number 15 and Ted Musgrave who and Sterling Marlin who both took professionals to get into the starting lineup in car cameras today we have three of them working for you as we head down the front stretch and go into turn number one on our warm-up lap there is the world cam that will be on Dale Jarrett that go forward for today's event Geoff Bodine will also carry the in-car camera he has won twice in a row here's we've been both the events at Martinsville last year and he is the defending champion of this event now the Martinsville Speedway is just a little over a half mile in length the bowl speed was 93 point 171 at a time of twenty point three to four seconds we'll go 500 laps in the field is separated by just a little more than one half second the pits are on both the front stretch and the back stretch here at Martinsville and as Ned told you the first 16 will be on the front stretch and the rest of the field on the back stretch in turns number one and two the banking is at 12 degrees not much of a Bank and in turns three and four also that turns our banked at 12 degrees and the banking on the straightaway well there is not there being wet down the pit area on the backstretch and 35
