versus the New York Jets 76,000 fans another sellout at Giants Stadium the Jets and the Dolphins sunny skies brisk weather temperature in the 40s and winds gusting to 30 in the AFC East Miami with five straight wins tied with Buffalo atop they beat the bills earlier this year the Jets with two wins and their last two outings have a chance to go five and five with an upset today if they do they can entertain real hopes of a possible wildcard later on hello everyone Dick Enberg with Bill Walsh Don Shula has built a new defense concentrating on stopping the run well they have stopped the run thus far not playing great opponents but playing with intensity really this team's playing more like a championship team than any I've seen since 1984 Dolphins leading the league least yardage allowed lease points allowed and the most sacks the wind today you heard it rustling through the microphone of Bruce costly on NFL live how will it impact today's play well it's bound to it's gonna gust up to maybe 40 miles an hour this is a coach's nightmare because all the subtle decisions you have to make during a game third and three to you pass or run do you go for the long field goal all kinds of things like that drive a coach crazy and a team crazy alright yesterday we visited with a Jets they've already matched last year's win total of four Bruce consulate has an upbeat camp he really does it's camp is enthusiastic they really work at it they're following his lead he's building everything it takes but he really doesn't have the personnel yet to win today they're going to have to make a big play from out of nowhere much as they've done the last two weeks and there is Koz let who was hired by paul brown and the expansion days of the cincinnati bengals as a backup tight end coached by bill walls and later it was wall gave him his first coaching job in 1980 with San Francisco then moved to Cincinnati the next year Don Shula second winningest coach of all time yet have to make you pleased for the 60 year old giant of the game that he once again has a top grade team seven and one how good are they their only lost was here in the Meadowlands to the Giants earlier this year and the Giants handled them rather easily on another windy day in Marino didn't throw well we'll see how he does today story on abyss who has not missed a field goal all season long we'll kick it off to the Jets and Terrance Mathis and Don Odegard two speedsters are back Mathis the man who returned a punt 98 yards for a touchdown last week and he takes it at the 5 [Applause] and down at the 20-yard green jersey jets and number seven quarterback ken O'Brien Friz well in Haven Iowa connection on the left side swing yet Center managed and Miller the right side of the offensive line in front of O'Brien Blair Thomas the Penn State number one draft pick Brad Baxter a Bulova blocker tune and more the outside receivers more from Syracuse Marc Boyer tight end he goes out along with those two backs and they go to their four wide Freeman McNeill comes in along with Chris Burkett and Terrence Mathis dick look for the jist to throw on first down to catch this team off balance and come to hell too music man has a first down out of line as tuned has now caught a pass in 71 consecutive games crossing patterns that seems to be the vogue in the NFL this year people breaking across the field and finding the other side of the field and his own defenders not seeing them coming you'll see tune coming across really the defense couldn't respond to the side which he broke starting out very very well and I think O'Brien was able to get one off before that pressure got to him descriptive plays of baz luhrmann it support back back through fumbles and scramble in the Jets backfield in New York recovers by the vanilla brian himself or frizz well 61 jeff prismo the left tackle fell on that loose ball cause allah wants to establish a ground game and i don't think he's going to get it done pres well from Sears Barrel Iowa town of 150 in a lot of corn fields see a lot of people waiting for that ball everybody's there comes right out this is what we've been talking about with a new difference it just was really lucky to have that ball bounce too much loss of a couple delay in the gift of Blair Thomas he's to the 40 and that's all and it's a swarming dolphin defense Blair had to break completely away from his blocking Jeff cross made that tackle there's Turner lien cross the starting front three with Briggs offered all Odom and green grapes and Odom give the dolphins that physical kind of play that they have lacked the last few years Makai er the cornea diner and brown are at the corners and the safeties too young and two outstanding safeties in Williams and Oliver there's Jeff cross nine sacks this [Applause] four wide receivers on one side of the field Brian looks the other way and finds wide open Dale Dawkins and Dale Dawkins has his first catch as a pro what do you call that formation that's a high five I know it's this five receivers on the field four on one side and if you're in man-to-man defense you have to find out who your man is and then sort through him to cover but the Miami Dolphins were really in a zone defense so they're unable to do anything Allen winds up short of a first down by a yard and a half and so Joe Pro cough and boy the kicks are going to be an adventure today he's kicking into the wind Tony Martin deep for Miami he keeps it low got a bad idea and wins with a fair catch at the 17 my a me with a ball for the first and their footing and there's our anemometer that measures the wind velocity you can see now at about 12 miles an hour but it will gust up to 30 now that's the wind on the floor of the stadium that has actually opposed to the direction of the wind high atop the stadium where it is really whipping and starching the flags web and sends the rookies on the left side you learn a Galbreath and Dennis the oldest lineman 20 Paige the exigent and Sammy Smith when I receive white said Jenson Martin and banks come in and hitting marks flaky for a first time they would appear out of the 29-yard line Jets defense reads this way Stallworth mercero bird the leading sack maker and laga men they used the 4-3 set mock Clifton and Kelly Clifton the leading tackler Tony Stargell has been picked on rookie corner hasty on the other side courtesy of melon the safeties are displaying today for planting Washington injured when they go to their nickel Michael maze and Don Odegard come in his expertise well Stargell was hit right away their plate is going to be after Stargell all days a rookie and he's he's not playing with a lot of confidence give us the Sammy Smith slashing out the left side for a big game to the 37 a pickup of eight before hasty and Curtis Smith coming in with a slightly strained knee so we may not see as much of them as you normally would just breaking up through the outside and the Jets lost leverage they didn't contain him that time play designed to go outside but Smith's running a little gingerly today two games versus the Jets and his a young history 3.6 average the Jets are allowing five yards worst in the NFL defending the rush to caught in the backfield and ripped down by Scott versa row [Applause] Connecticut number 94 this jet defense is identical to the defense at Minnesota with Floyd Peters has been running for a number of years and Pete Carroll the defensive coordinator work with with Minnesota for five years so you'll see this team with eight men near the line of scrimmage virtually every down almost forcing Marie knodel caryl he's 39 looks much younger doesn't he he's one of five defensive coordinators in the league that are in their 30s [Applause] Moreno through the hands of Fred banks number 80 [Applause] Moreno had to get rid of that ball that's not what he wanted to do but Washington number 97 was all over him he had to make that quick release and get and use that release it has to get rid of the ball before he got sacked so thus far you'd have to say Jackson yeah up to the occasion and ears robo use really kicked well the last three games over a 45 yard average there's Mathis man who tied an NFL record with a 98-yard touchdown return of a punt against Dallas last week Rovi has the wind at his back [Applause] weeks out to the 20-yard with ten manning in a scoreless first quarter phantoms farm is there and by Mazda cars and trucks Mazda it just feels right from the World Trade Center across the Hudson into the Meadowlands ancho and stadium and the chips are lost Cincinnati where Bruce consulate worked as an assistant of his ham whites the last seven eight years using that sideline huddle and right to the line of scrimmage come the New York Jets and ken O'Brien much better than his eight years here with the Jets but tough competitor always ready to answer the bell and he hands off to Brad Baxter the 235 pound for back to short and we'll take a look at our 10 minute ticker today and the score is yet and we can expect Vallon November in December where the weather became a factor that we'll see one of those zeros longer into the first period teams really have to adapt at this stage of the year to cold weather to the wind to the elements then maybe toughest of all for a coaches the toughest no question second and seven mark boy you're the tidy on Indianapolis emotion Brian underneath to Boyer and he stopped at the 27 yard line that'll be shy of a first-time buy three yards let's compare the Miami Dolphins defense with last year when they allowed nearly 24 points a game this year an NFL low under 12 again and yardage from 356 down to 227 well it's really a tribute to a Shula to his staff but personnel-wise just better athletes cross Odum added to the team Griggs added to the team these are intense guys but they've got the strength that takes to dominate a blocker to stop the run they stopped in here but too late first down picked up by a brad baxter old Amandla tire with a tackle Odom really stuck Baxter but he got through quickly enough to get the first down this defense is attacking it's hitting for the eyes open hitting clean now they'll get a first down but look at the hit itself clean shot right up underneath and this is earmark the defense it hasn't played this way for probably 20 years former teammate weeks ago on first down play-action O'Brien David Griggs number 92 his brother was a former jet Billy a Titan and Shawn Lee were in on O'Brian who is sacked to the 24th time this year well O'Brien's got to get rid of the ball did you can't hold it that long nice fake look at the clearance he's got throw throw throw look at this well I don't care who you're playing you can't hold the ball for four seconds right now meanwhile Jeff Ross getting lots of attention double-team he's got a guard he's handling with two people reading his rush three people those that don't have anyone particularly block I'm sure they're looking over for Jeff second down and about 20 [Music] [Applause] and throws it away he did have Blair Thomas in the area well altoon tried to cross a nichelle across the kind of pass he caught right at the start of the game the first play and this time Miami was waiting they just shut him off right at the line of scrimmage that's why you saw O'Brien looking looking and then having will come out to his left Bruce cosmic where did you find him on your assistant at Cincinnati before the game I just tried to recall 22 years ago dick this guy was a good football player university of pacific tried canada and then it sort of given up football and wear the bangles as a young assistant i called him on the phone and we made a deal over the phone well he was working in a tire factory for the summer the yardage needed and he doesn't defensive play by Glenn who broke up the pass to rookie Terrence Mathis Miami's own is just attacking short receivers so as the ball gets there the Miami defenders are getting it good design of a play but to see toon working underneath but you see people all over the short defenders then attacking the ball but you know Bruce was spending the summer working to get enough money to get going to graduate school I called we made a deal Paul Brown gave us the authority to make those 14 thousand dollars a year for Bruce the $500 bonus broke off to Tony Martin on the mark by a few green shirts but finally has brought down 58 Joe Kelly in on the tackle and it will be the jet starting from about their forty two or three yard line check that the Miami from the 42 or 43 as we look at the quarterback comparison Moreno against O'Brien and the punishment they've taken we know sack less than a sack for game course they Miami's Little League nine straight years counting this when O'Brien 284 set harvested delivery in their quickness [Applause] first down at the 44 for the dolphins go score midpoint first quarter team's having trouble moving the ball early underneath incomplete the guns the ball short lady won't drop many of those 23 catches this year on that ball and it travels such a short distance Clayton didn't have a chance to adjust but now that's two drops per mark he's not having a super year 40 of course they're not throwing him that much but in this particular game with an eight-man front although the Minnesota Vikings that Carroll's put together the past should be dominating the game plan for Miami the wind or no 123 toys Stratford on the back field behind [Applause] with Scratchy and the Jets offside and Moreno throw mr. mark known that duper of late the first signal was he waved it out of play no cash no they talked it over but did jet just can't afford to make any mistakes that off offside it did they say he did catch it gains his mind and they rule it a catch up at the Jets 46 you'll see an offside on the left that's pretty evident Dan's gonna time a an out pattern to the left side and there's one there's a drag that he got it that's fine real pro kind of catch no question about it but the Jeff's Jets can't make any mistakes even an offside like that Oh five-yard penalty the piddly is accepted 5-yard penalty repeat the down second down at a second and 1 they took it at second first and 5 for second and 5 it would have been third and 1 the contact is the referee sometimes you can question decisions I'd have to question that one I don't know what they had in mind there yet you're playing a pretty confident game when you give down and give up a four yard gain for a down but the Jets can't make any mistakes they're outgunned here they're out man their enthusiasm has to offset intensity of the Miami team that can sense a great season [Applause] grunting - - tub jet defenders streaking up from a safety decision number 22 they Joe Kelly the linebacker now Macmillan and Curtis both coming from the secondary the Jets are trying to hide what they have in mind but they're going to come up and force this play from the inside out there's Macmillan good shot hasty getting in on it the enthusiasm and his jet team has a dramatic departure from a year ago major factor Miller News led the Jets and interceptions eighth and sixes first two years but only two this season his role has changed he's making more tackles there's a tail underneath to Jensen and a first down as Jensen the third down receiver comes in and Moreno finds him even though everyone in the ballpark knows it's going to be Jensen before the game I just got some stats together he caught his 12 third down passes and this is number 13 in this season I think it's only about his 20th catch so he comes in on third down and they throwing the ball on third down only his 18th catch in the he is the 18th bread and butter guy and third down I sort of pushed Jim Jensen into this role I coached him there are we coached him in these seniors we didn't put him in the game at Boston University [Applause] laughs Sammy's Darrell Davis Scott mercero with a tackle again as poster 5 at the 39 of the Jets you know you talked about developing personnel Don Shula Jim Jensen now how could you ever think at all angular quarterback would ever be a past receiver in later years and play as many years as he has 10 years they had a great special teams oh yeah and that's how he volunteered to be a kickoff man with with Shula because he was so bored standing on the sidelines as a third quarterback they let him do it he made a great hit from then on he's been valuable marino down the middle the clayton is that interference yes it is Tony Stargell a little early on the contact of Clayton look like Stargell was going for the ball it really did maybe they have a better angle on where we sit he was breaking on the ball he wasn't playing the receiver he was maybe was maybe our angle is in terms of the condemning evidence so Miami now and striking territory inside the Jets 20-yard line at about the 16 mil market the Jets defense number 45 first-time judges have to keep the game close and when I say that any game you'd want to you'd want to give that reference point but in this case if they get behind they don't have near the offense against the Miami defense to overcome anything so they've got to keep it closer to the second 17 yard line first time for Marino seasons [Applause] emotion and gives the Smith Smith recovers his own mistake good defensive play reaching in and stripping him away it appeared to be Kyle Clifton Clifton fill the hole as soon as he saw our that guard in front of him blocked down you'll see him come flying you see the guard block down he flies into the hole takes on page and makes basically a stop although that ball came out of there little early Clifton is having a great year page is having a great year and both of these guys some years ago were drafted by the Jets and routine said Spanish biggest surprise Moreno almost sacked and unloads it a receiver in the area Troy Stratford it was nipples number 77 with the pressure the Florida State well that quick-release got Moreno a fighting chance here because in this case if O'Brien were in this position he'd have been sacked Moreno gets the ball off and that's the difference in the two quarterbacks Nichols had the grasp but not the control of it dick I'll bet there's a hundred sacks along the way O'Brien's taken that marina wouldn't have taken under similar circumstances [Applause] complaint - duper and he struggles for the first down duper charges to the five goal the Jets went all out for Marino down the backed up like this they sent everybody is that slant pattern is thrown so sharp and so hard that it really couldn't be stopped and you notice where he caught it into his body it wasn't thrown out in front Marino is almost pinpoint inaccuracy Marino loving duper second effort as he dragged on Odegard the rookie defensive back in extra points in the first and goal play of this Drive no score minutes left first quarter and Sammy to the one-yard line here is a recent company dragon you know there was a time when the dolphins were at their best in 1984 when they'd get in this position Marino would throw three straight passes to get the touchdown that's the difference between this team in the last great one that said Don Shula head now they're willing to run the ball and what a what a benefit that is for Marino takes all the heat off like sure last time with a wrinkle well twinkle in his eye yeah he's been changing past play [Applause] [Applause] trying to play pass instead the old habits they almost revert to them here Dan Marino's gonna run a run a playpen see this he's holding on maybe not watch the play pass there was a playful could even get the fakin Dennis Burke number nine the Jets want to call timeout go inside the three to 26 left Miami with a big third down ball coming up Atlanta takes the early lead at Soldier Field the wingless hungry for a win up by 7 against Indianapolis and Tampa Bay scores first in the Superdome here no score but Miami at the two and a half yard line their tenth play of this Drive and the Jets called a timeout to make sure the proper defensive players were on the field well the Dolphins have got four wide receivers in the game the Jets had to adjust to it quickly look for Moreno the hand all by himself there's a girl quarterback Kronos three charge the the Jets line the touch isolated everybody to the outside then ran a man in motion Moreno tried to drop away but it was in goal so in a strategy backfired on him too dolphins have sort of left what they do best to try to outsmart somebody and the Jets were just playing too aggressive they weren't about to buy something like that raised on perfect Pete's Toyota Vitz 12 for 12 this year this one a 29 yard make that a 24 yard attack and he's 13 for 13 and leaves three nothing and a half first quarter they work on their defensive schemes across the way with the New York Jets kicking into the wind now as Odegard and Mathis will deploy the return and it's blowing hard enough now that said Jarvis Williams has to serve as a holder for stay on of it so it takes only a five yard run-up you know this really was a sort of a moral escape or moral victory for the Jets to give up only three points when Miami had first and goal with that running game they've developed so the Jets are staying with it just by those tactics three point six over 20 okay jr. the bed I was special to you for the tackle reminders NBC Sports next Sunday it'll be 12:30 of course for NFL live and there's your lineup featuring San Diego at Kansas City at Kansas City with that great defense special teams a block five punts this year they're looking for a win that would set them up for the rematch against the Raiders two weeks from now and the Chargers have been playing well there's the AFC West the Chargers with a victory today they too could be at five and five and flirt with a possible wild card is three wild cards in each conference this year so that would keep it wide also back to the end you know Kansas City isn't so good that San Diego can't beat them and Kansas City is yet to get enough offense so they can they can routinely win tough games they're still struggle and seen egos defense could give them all kind of trouble they're just not there yet so see see and egos certainly in the striking distance so by the rookie [Applause] right at the goal line but you read the Dolphins are coming up the field so hard that the blockers can't get to them that time the guard and tackle pulled and and the defenders had penetrated so far they couldn't even block them so the balls knocked out of there almost immediately it was Griggs who forced the fumble in the Jets recovered almost a safety against the Jets there's Gregg's who's made a couple of big hits already that's one of those physical players plays Chula thus far this year well Gregg's in Turner came up the field so hard that there wasn't anybody there to block him when you see them come up the field all the way to the ball here it is the ball is knocked out almost immediately by Griggs but there's nothing there those kinds of place just aren't going to make it the Jets fortunate to wind up with a ball play action and Bryan hits gets him off the Golan that would have given a first Conchas Hector slipped and fell or they'd have gotten their first down you see people sitting there waiting for it three people making content this is the difference on the Miami's style of play this year a year ago they'd all been sitting back and have gotten blocked Miami with a three nothing lead in the final seconds of this first period and remember the Jets are kicking into the wind if they are not able to come up with a big play on Thursday 15 [Applause] mantas so with 17 seconds left in the quarter comes Jill Pro comp to try to get a hold of a long one but in this wind it's very difficult to get any distance especially left to right and so Miami should come up with excellent field position Tony Martin is back to standing at the Jets 40-yard line O'Brien had time he's never had before just by chance all of Miami pass rushers widened out ran past him so he was he was in a position really to complete that pass and was nervous I think because he assumed he'd get hit great kick against the wind driving Martin back and he fumbles he mustn't we cover at the 40-yard [Applause] well as ice dick we spoke about it before the game and and a coach crazy and drive players crazy that ball suddenly took off and was almost impossible to judge these the kinds of breaks that the Jets need Joe broke off he got the ball high enough so that the high wind carried it I know it the field goes right to left but they predominant in this stadium then you're going to get a little carry which he did wide receivers for the Jets they can open it up right at this point rattled or not McNiel charging to the 36 yard loan the 31 year old veteran from UCLA giving Lana still holding to that Davis field goal of Chicago and the older other chains Minnesota has scored at the Silverdome to lead the Lions 7 nothing Joe Pro puffs into that capricious win a 50-yard punt a big play the muffin by Martin and the recovery at the 40 by the Jets who position themselves now for a chance to attack Miami's three nothing lead as we open the second period it's a little game going on on both sides Bruce consoles keeping his team on the sidelines and breaking up without a huddle that means Miami has to wait to see who's coming out to know who the play on defense McNeal [Applause] there was a whole no question about it McNeal didn't have to make any kind of move in the hole he just turned it on the wham play by the halfback black in the nose guard splits people and brickworks up the field but there was something there all four Jets both carriers are averaging over 40 yards to carry this year like over doll just didn't feel quickly enough after this time this week well shut up Jarvis William one of those talented safeties came up to help out new green 50 both safeties are able to come up like a CFO coming you see the break to the outside you know if someone it could be legislated to eliminate one place football is that off tackle play by the tail but every team runs it almost to get a breath between making the kind of calls that will win the game he's kind of up at elite white that averages less than two yards of care [Applause] and process another one [Applause] like clip Odom let's go back to the awful play why is that not working well everybody gets to it's there before the ball carrier does now here's another case of that lead play they just they just ran and Oprah doll is blocked by the guard and it took Adam to come across and make the stop they're pointing right at them but that I formation playoff tackle that inky from who was Aniki woods from Cincinnati made popular a few years ago everybody's calling that almost to give themselves time to use other tactics because it goes nowhere team after team use it i drives me crazy [Applause] back [Applause] he and his teammates a slow B was [Applause] it looked like you could go for the goal line and he got three offers he got the first down he breaks outside and tries to fake the pass but to no avail but he did get the first down through the night through the 14 yard line the Dolphins Miami leads free nothing 1220 in the first half inside the ten the state it was the project last year when the Jets development squad and consulate said he improved more than anyone players since I've arrived Bruce came in he really wasn't so long ago he'd been an 11th round pick by Minnesota and released his interesting colony players are even late round fix released and finally find a new life related to the system and maybe their maturity [Applause] the first time Dolf a defense counting the first quarter today has shut out the running game from the in John 21 quarters in fact the last touchdown against the Dolphins on the ground was Otis Anderson here at the Meadowlands Miami was to New York Giants objects are playing a good sound to fool this is when the italic finally fits there will be a winner Hector that off-tackle slannen a little bit out of it the plane before and repeated it now on comes the field-goal unit that means veteran pat leahy second oldest in the league at 39 Joe Fergus one great year with the NFL this all America soccer player at st. Louis University has had another big year 14 415 never been to the ball that's amazing over the years the 40 great career but once you get locked into the Pro Bowl often it's the same kickers every year that keep coming back and they don't really give consideration to new people at least this guy's hardly new so just like [Applause] the three old ten to the go first and so field goal by Leigh and it is absolutely not true ladies and gentlemen that old football coaches will retired take up other toys once their football let's take it away this actually has supposed to be serious now tell me about it well Larry Bechtol calls his team what they wrote great great greater greater bigger machine to win the championship but right now he's got Road graders and they just got three points he actually has a road grader in the offensive lineman's of quarters where they study film to remind them that that's the kind of blocking he wants it'll be Miami starting at the 20 as we go to NFL Barnard in this update with Bob Costas dick New England is trying to break a six-game losing streak at home second quarter in Foxborough they have a seven nothing lead on the Colts after this one-yard touchdown run by Marvin Allen and since you seem to be so amused by them dick will be sending you a GI Joe and the Remco sneaky pete magic set for christmas yeah you ruined the fun I had that on my list how did you ever get that tree all well grid is round the sidelines at the moment as Miami goes to work man it's there for Sammy Smith Ron stalwart and Dennis Byrd the tacklers well the longer that Don Shula States refrains from using the pass the more optimism I'm sure the ocean that jet side line because no question the running game for Miami is much much better but the passing game where the jet defensive backs having to deal marouk with Moreno and his receivers is really the way that underneath it goes short too Tony fades affirmative fullback at the 28 where we'll be third and two as Miami operates behind a very young line Richmond Webb the number one pick from this year Keith Sims from Iowa State they're number two pick EULA make is only in his second year as you can see Galbreath and Dennis in the right side the oldest men in and Dennison there just 25 so the future of this offensive they're already good and that's partly [Applause] first down right behind the block of Sydney's mystery the first down out of the 30 reishi Tony page leading into the hole we'll see him break through to make a big block to page the full-back will break into the hole right here there is a beautiful block inside and Clifton had to try to stop it these two guys Clifton and Paige drafted together rooming together with the Jets many years ago each other in the left side turns it down to the Jets 48 [Applause] beep bets finally get him out of it's a 21-yard well fortunately for the more than one runner but here's the lead play inside with Paige again making a great block is Smith breaking to the outside Smith's lost 12 pounds from a year ago so he's much quicker than a year ago much quicker Pastis he made the pact the first down at the 48 of the Jets misdirection and no action at all bird number from Tulsa Canadian player from Mustang Oklahoma first their best player he's in a position Maillard plays for the Vikings that critical position over the guard and he has similar dreams of abilities but this jet team is attacking and not sitting back and reading they're going after people with real conviction a loss of a yard bird hands Logan so at second any level [Applause] the deflection right there was Travis pertussis crowd Edwin's caught that same ball a week ago and went all away with it or virtually all the way right down the middle against a double rotation this time the ball was just a little bit behind them later than 11 Edmonds and full ball player started out so slowly this year they thought he needed replacing but the last couple of weeks [Applause] depends [Applause] wide open but Martin misses it through his hands that would have been a first down this is the kind of thing that's happened for the jet the last two weeks and they've won against superior opponents there's a ball it should be caught it was sort of being forced to the ground by the wind but these are the kinds of things that started to developing the last two weeks for the Jets and they've come away with two wins it could happen today we're in cheer OB the punt ference Malthus back at the 10 [Applause] [Applause] eight six hurry to meet your opponent a more intimate basis Eric McMillan and Tim Jensen a fairly intense a little hard of hearing the milkman came up real close to punctuate now there's a great returning feeling between players and they carefully no cats is the quality our angles if he had that one the turbot was thrown behind him see how he has to reach way back for he had that his hands wrapped around it as he bounced to the turf but apparently it might have been one of those quick hops really an excellent move for the ball he's got it there tucked it away uh father perhaps a good women not going to be overruled from the 24-second into fake reverse Blair Thomas of a 28 yard line they had me fooled ik the Tim Keady is throwing his second touchdown pass of the first half bills lead Kansas City were the first points the NCL has been tied that there's what's got into the Ewing leave tied Tampa Bay [Applause] we spotted third down and five from the 29 Oh Brian this far four four eight only 35 yards Sampson worldwide [Applause] Nino not for the first down got six [Applause] Jeff cross made the tackle Miami's nickel defense is somewhat different they really run three lineman and each a junior who was in here at this position but they're vulnerable really to the running play with just three linemen you see EJ being picked off by the right tackle Miller and there's a hole so that was part of a plan I'm sure that three-man defense of mine schon wieder could be trapped and just third four or five [Music] buying some time then throws it away [Applause] Green was putting on some pressure and Jeff cross as well flushing him out of the pocket there's a look at Bruce's scripted place I'm sure that they're not much good if Kenya doesn't hit the receiver in that time of Brian it looked like he had a man and he disposed the ball too long his consulate his son right behind him is only a sophomore in high school JJ 6 4 and 220 pounds playing both ways as a tackle I was a head coach a bit later in life was full grown by the time I got a job Brian on the screen for the 40s for the I managed Odom made the stuff as I mentioned a while back the Bruce Paz lit as a coming to the Bengals an expansion he planted late eight years pollinated with Bob Trumpy and from my phone call not taking any credit for it come all full circle for Bruce being a head coach to the National Football League the one thing he brought to the Bengals at that time he brings to the Jets he's extremely bright very very assertive guy he's a quick thinker got a clear mind and his paid off as a player but even more so now he's approaching 35 O'Brien [Applause] there's the sack by EJ jr. the second of the game [Music] has five on the year former number one pick of the cardinals an 81 overcame a cocaine problem now speaks highly intelligent guy to young people about his problems he called it stinking and thinking to get involved with drugs but he's made a comeback and is really contributing with the dolphins this year you know he was beaten out by David Briggs because they thought Briggs was just a more physical player than you Jake but then he's found his spot as a situational pass question and he really comes off that corner or can act as a Blitzer and it's gotta be a rebound career troy Radford from the 15 and he's out of bounds down at the 26 so Tony amar by Don Shula uses Stratford on this occasion pretty good return but it's going to be called back because of a penalty apparently 48 yard punt by Pro pop 11 yards on the return and out the contact will announce the penalty you know they keep a statistics on everything in the National Football League how many kicking plays would there be and then a penalty involved they've better 60% because the officials can see every player those players are trying so desperately to help their team they'll do anything there's only one return we will penalize half the distance to the goal line it will be first down plenty of time 351 but plenty of distance for Shula when we return here at 3:00 all Miami and the Jets and the Dolphins with just under four minutes left in this first half we'll begin from their 10-yard and touchdown passes puts him to work [Applause] Nesmith trying to pickable get down to the 14 or it'll be second down 186 his value dipped a value of an Eric McMillan coming in Smith actually broke the line of scrimmage and McMillan just comes over your finishes him off you know what a difference to have those big safety been able to come up and make those stops Nolan 6 2 in 200 was a teammate with the Tigers of Missouri of Jeff Ross has become the star defensive line met on the pitch braixen as Nicholas it appears that one's going to be back I think I saw a face mask along the way on Smith like Kelly reached out got part of a face mask we have face masks on the deep end five yards first down very good bill Walsh and so they run does count and plus five yards I could always spot the facemask nothing else there's a reach look at that block by the young tackle web just really cleared out the way and finally the tackle from behind the Travis Curtis first down less than three minutes ago [Applause] makes the catch at the nope no cash control well that was a clever move though by Clayton as marina was running out of territory going out of bounds Clayton watch what he does here that comes all the way back well this is really a design play Moreno coming to the outside with a blocking setting up to getting him away from the pass rush and Clayton breaking late to the outside but they're not candling the ball it would not have counted even had Clayton caught the ball because he had stepped out of bounds and that announcement being made right they can't act now this Pete Carroll has done a great job with his jet defense he really has he looks like he's 25 you couldn't take him seriously but he's 39 years old but he's has a history of being one of the brightest people in the game the coach of the Giants who works here on other Sundays [Applause] [Applause] and it's true right at the stick that's going to be close to a first down Clifton makes the tackle a flag is down again it was a broken play by the Miami team Moreno is just not executing this team is not executing and moving the ball is taking broken plays to get yardage and of course this penalty negates even then I give the holding offense number 78 10-yard penalty repeat sit down second down I can see how the Jets have won some games with your victus by this tenacity bamm-bamm Richmond Webb from Texas A&M the number one pick guilty of the whole Ray Bentley the line back where the bill said this guy Webb is so big he looks like an eclipse then you put Sims next to him who's even heavier 305 and 300 that's not a good sign quaint the last several years [Applause] second and 20 who catches one the 32-yard line well Clifton who leads the Jets in tackles as he has for the last six years makes the stop as we approach the two-minute timeout with the score stoic Kapoor and Tony Martin has replaced him in the lineup terrific athlete Clayton does you know those stories in college in Louisville where he jumped the full length of a ping-pong table on a bed he leads the dolphins basketball team in the winter for 60 points [Applause] two minutes ago the ball might have been off side they have the pass incomplete that's a shame as Fred banks been able to get to the ball it appeared that Marvin Washington for the second time had leaned offside and Moreno another play Moreno does a beautiful job with his Cadence's now sides defensive number 97 five we beat them down there down third Nate Moreno historically has done things and Washington just has an adaptive effects for that case [Applause] than typical over so right up into that finest image right now machine go back [Applause] backers underneath the has complained the Stratford right at the sticks about a yard shy this time it was Jeff Waggaman there was off Sun they might measure first to see if it's a first down before the Dolphins elect to either take the penalty or the play both sides defense Hillary is declined first down that's why they declined Bruce consulates young defense self-destructed there they had Miami stopped would have gotten the ball but to offside penalties although the second not effect of the pass complete anyway the pass was incomplete on third down washing things off the second [Applause] Martin or did that call sale Martin looking for it in front of him in the ball five yards behind it I must say that it all are a true but in the running game the Miami pass protection is not what it used to be maybe they're not giving it as much time I'm sure that's a factor but Moreno is having to release that ball that's why it's just inaccurate enough not to get the good catch off it that time when Washington was right there and the Jets feel that the one player they need going into next year is a impact pass Russia they've got some good Russia but they don't have for especially [Applause] away from pressure and pushed shot by Marino [Applause] putting on the heat in there as well wouldn't it be something with all the improvement on defense improve running even though you can't pass can't pass like they used to but that's what it looks like so far today their wings somewhat of a factor but they're just not getting open and the linemen are giving too much ground in the face of Marino so he can't go to own that receiver 1:43 left this is third and ten for marina [Applause] Travis [Applause] three people down his poop [Applause] in Washington hit him just as he released of all for Kurtis his second interception of the year and this was an outstanding defensive play [Applause] and so with plenty of time 33 seconds the underdog jets with a chance for the lay they start at the [Applause] Falls to the 40 [Applause] there was a muff hunt that led to the Jets first field goal jet shaft it now this is the part of the game that is almost the last to develop the two-minute often so they one minute office it just takes years to really develop it and find it like the 49ers now have it the Jets are so young don't expect too much in this situation [Applause] thirty-five on the sidelines that's why the plays design he gets it by trues up the sideline jumps out of bounds and they have to call a time Jetts call time that with one time on in 50 seconds to take the lead Lansing on the sidelines [Applause] a few seconds to go looking to the leader the 35 McBeal passes to the outside seem to really now forth and what what does consulate do is you're going to go for it apparently too far for the field goal try be about a 52-yard field goal with the wind if there is such a thing the way this crazy went operate swirling in giant Stadium [Applause] get it before gift [Music] and it ruled it a can't so let's look at [Applause] his hands underneath the ball between the ball the carpet well you don't see him drop it his hands are right up for it looks like you dropped a dick it looks like in Fountain the Dolphins with 36 seconds left at their own 35-yard line the choice of place is dear bruce's to my hearts the choice of those last two plays wasn't very good you'd think on third and short at least they'd try a play fast to get thro the hooking pattern to try to pull linebackers up but instead they tried to drop back passes and to the outside both pastors have had brutal times trying to complete a pass breaking to their outside because the winds affecting the throw or especially the low balls you could just see that when just force the ball lower than O'Brien had intended everything sort of bouncing to play is being reviewed that's why we have the but terrific angle that we didn't see those are the best that we had those two angles and they really don't show and so there's no evidence to overrule that if they were gonna go for a dick just run for it twice they've got one yard I know Miami has electronic defense this year but those are sort of low percentage passes where this wind stands you're under the ball and that view looks like a catch one of the other ones didn't quite look like not indisputable law missions felled on Tuesday good for the Jets Miami from the 35 thirty-six seconds might be enough they starts with the screen to Jennsen and has block [Applause] Miami calls the timeout 26 seconds to go still at three but the Dolphins are at methey [Applause] Jennsen again but only a gain of a couple I'll clip them right there well if the Jets can get out of this without a score what a break again now is be a 30 minute game instead of a 60 minute fan on the middle in by troy Stratford four seconds in a desperation play for Marino maybe it's just about a play early to say this but the job that Pete Carroll's done here with this defense as I sit up here and look at it it is a masterful job it really is this is one of the bright young guys that's going to certainly head coach sue several years the defensive coached with the Minnesota Vikings and disconsolate made that choice will right away timeout touchdown late [Applause] four seconds to go the left side and then throws the other way to Stratford some blockers and finally covered in the 40-yard two players selected two years ago in the draft was a tight end in junior college out in California Riverside City College went to the University of Missouri and played all the defensive line positions but he was only at 247 pounds linemen so no one had any idea this guy would grow into an outstanding bro well this is where the scouting comes in because 245 250 pounds in college played three different positions and former tied in but Don Shula is really proud of the fact or pleased with the fact that he can get to the passer if he beats the blocker he's so quick he can get to the pasture and take advantage of it the new faces on that defense most of them selected because of their physical nature and then Makai are coming across as a great cover man in the two quarterbacks brown on the card giving them good man covers second half marked Higgs returning out to the 30-yard line for Miami let's just take a look at Miami success with the ball in the first 30 minutes getting only the one field goal of the possessions one ending an interception but just just can't sank now if they're going to stay with Miami they just can't let down in any way because at least let down and Marino's gonna one touchdown to make the difference Matt on the ground and Logan breaks through a hole and out to the 37 yard line if they come up about 600 Mott from Iowa made the tackle well Moreno is going to be happy when this thing is over you'd like to take a win and run back to Miami because he is not enjoyed any success in six quarters a giant stadium this year remember against the Giants that great campy fence and he muffled his attempts and the have a good frying day in the are nothing spectacular the former jet who is the leading receiver for back in town and it may be a roughing call against the Jets on Marino yes it is so they'll tack on another 15 from the spot where the play ended at the 48 the Jets are running line stunts crossing the charges of their defensive lineman and they're coming out with unblocked people write down Marino's throat that time the 15-yard penalty first down god mercero the ball is well off and that's about no question about it I think more of those kind of things should be called by the he knows Moreno doesn't handle the ball no question about that what right does he have to who shot the guy at the 37 of the chips [Applause] he went in on the stop Tyla Clifton did a beautiful job Ian Paige are having a match up they can't believe back barrel edmonds with a grimace only offense number 18 10-yard penalty repeat the down first down oh there's well the arm got outside almost by mistake by Edna's I know Monte Clark works with the tight ends for Miami and Edmonds has got great power but technique-wise is he probably will never become the real sophisticated tactical blocker but throughout this game Tony Paige and Kyle Clifton have been meeting in the hole time after time and again whistling that fastball of his right three of the urns a mark Logan Kelly and put them were there now get work from down below on mark flaky of the Dolphins sprained knee will not return today let's hope it's no more serious than that but this an athlete was yeah joy to what and they're still working on Tony page as they wrapped it appears his upper leg doesn't seem to become as serious well they need page he is the leader of this ballclub offensively and defensively the Miami Dolphins voted him who is our most valuable player page one hands down underneath the toys operator to the 41 years and down in about 13 another tackle well here comes Jim Jensen so in Tony Martin here they come so these are the guys that most likely will get this ball that middle screen was very effective earlier [Applause] 4:56 trying to get this crowd and dancing out of the back [Applause] May's an expert defensive back there for the Jets and Miami won't have to punish Gary Stevens the offensive pass offense coach for ma'am he must be going nuts upstairs because there have been dropped passes all over the field something Miami is has not had any history of it all until maybe this season if people are taking their eye off the ball there's Gary Stevens on the sideline former Miami assistant coach at the University people feel is that a head coach of the future excellent football mind and of course he's filled big shoes coming into Miami and working with the Rainey Roby handles the high staff into the atmosphere Malthus waiting for it to come down and no they say covered by Miami attest the jet it touched the jet in my Greg Beatty recovered number 84 at the six yard line [Applause] [Applause] dick we talked about the wind before the game here's another case of it where the fair catch being attempted but the ball falling crazily to the ground you can't judge it the pot returner can't he has to get out of the way and it bounces off the pot returned man paired the hip James hastily hits a speed 40 right on the right leg as it came down as he was preparing the block just can't make the judgment on that ball it just takes crazy angles coming out of that wind go big break for Miami 19 seconds 19 seconds on the play clock please thank you in the first half Tony Martin muffed the punt for Miami covered by Burkett at the 40 led to the Jets field goal Malthus trying to get some room pushed his teammate and pushed him right into the flight of the ball he just wasn't aware at all of where that ball was coming down but you almost count on the fair catch and when they didn't get it then the ball was going to bounce crazy and it hit hasty Tony Paige is back in the huddle Miami is to call him Polliwog when he was a teammate here with the Jets he says he likes TP Tony pay the total package I can run and I can catch and I can certainly block [Applause] he leads the way for number 20 mark welcome to the 4 yard line Dennis verb with a look for a page to lead the ball carrier and look for Miami to run the ball because the last time they were down we talked about them sort of leaving their game plan and right away being willing to throw in this situation logan appears to be holding the back of that leg a possible hamstring let's check the tackle as Logan injured on the play and with it a timeout 1202 left in the third period character of the young defense of the Jets a goal-line stand for them Miami I sure was going to try to force that ball down in there with a runner the last series in this situation they threw they had a quarterback draw tried to throw a pass all I got was a field goal [Applause] the middle touchdown pony pay paid to etat only 18 passes and his best year previous six seasons and now is right at number thirty on this year as he's become a primary target from Moreno well he crossed me up a very evident I didn't think they throw here they go right back into the shotgun letter just going to the pass down short Paige is their best blocker also one of their best pass receivers a guy's a throwed you in that situation down in close that means they'd have to have all kind of confidence in his fourth touchdown reception more than any wide receiver for Miami so Jana vyx with the extra point and thanks to a left putt at the six yard line Miami has the LAN said we're dying breathing nice we're up Erika's wheels fine Radio Shack America's technology store nobody compares for Christmas shopping and buy andhe maker of fine quality automobiles test drive a Honda at your local dealer today Tony Paige roommate of Bruce Smith at Virginia Tech he was a short guarded touchdown man for the Jets three years with the Lions no touchdowns a plan B acquisition by Miami and he's delivered three rushing touchdowns and two rushing and for receiving to lead Miami and reception scores you know I visited with Don Shula last night both of us agreeing how could anyone give up Tony page no matter what kind of offense they ran he's a football player Mathis Oh appear to be cool Road Rick laughs perhaps 90 Jim Kelly's three touchdown passes Buffalo stole leads by 7 Seattle in front of Kansas City at Arrowhead in Chicago trying to go 8 and 1 on the year New England looking for a victory against Indianapolis medicine lead cut to 3 New Orleans by a fish every day James hasty just in the wrong spot on that putt when the ball hit his easy store from Miami disappointed on the sidelines and now the Jets the mistake contemporary layer of Thomas for the 27 yard or it was the second player picked in the draft gorge by Indianapolis and then Thomas by the Jets roaring 32 the first time a jet runner has carried those numbers since Emerson booze with Joe Namath area well this could be the best of a bunch and they've had some great ones free making training McNeill included Bruce Kozma thinks he has unlimited future I think most people do he combines everything gets it again [Applause] the longest play of the day for the Jets a reverse the reverse was open in itself to the outside and you get a beautiful running play the reverse actually affected this fashion for showing defense you'll see a fake reverse coming around this way to hold people and then Thomas keeping the ball on his sweep to the outside there's the fake to the outside pulling guard beautiful job at cutting down by Trevor mantich beautiful though first down from midfield shakes three still on then smothered after a yard game John in his four years with Miami makes the tackle and now entrepreneur he has his own bagel business and I hit those cinnamon raisin bagels are going big you have to wait in line up to a half hour downtown Miami Dubai well you get a franchise down in San Diego I'll get one in San Francisco and we'll be set this keep me out of the kitchen [Applause] the former Syracuse star out of bounds first down at the four here's another guy that the Jets feel has a great future supplemental draft number one pick Beach strong nice move there for a guy six foot three that's pretty darn good duo vibe grew up in Hampstead they're just three miles from the training camp of the Jets look at this everybody's after cross they still three people only controller Raymond McNeil thirty-six first time he's happy today with rece ela his alma mater his major up season yesterday they deny the Huskies any hopes of a national championship I've always felt this guy was one of the very best in Turkey he combines power and elusive III thing and where Thomas is very very similar of course a much younger guy they can do the same kinds of things you could give it a Rob Horn of there this time it's the fullback and he's to the thirty first downs yes [Applause] well we have a moment here marty glickman the announcer for the Jets on radio and a longtime friend of us at the NBC for the first time in 25 years has missed his NFL assignment he's suffering from a viral infection couldn't call the game today and watching at home here in New York we sent our best to one of the great sports voices in the United States Marty back in the satellite sure next weekend jets trying to go five and five Miami Ripoff six wins in a row of toughly PFCs with buffalo ten three Miami the Jets driving its Baxter again short yardage the Jets are going to take it right to Miami even though the results are real spotty frog they've got to get a score on this Drive because offensively I don't think they're going to be able to drive like this very many more times they've got to get three points out of this and Schuler's defense fourthly last year to number one coming into this game and until this drive had really shut down the Jets attempts with the ball this has been their most impressive yes back there what a good Miami Lois Oliver number 25 the biggest and the fastest of the dolphin defensive backs made the initial hit Lois Oliver is one of a new breed of safety man that can come up and make a play they're so big and so strong that he'll come flying up into the play and make the stop it seemed coming from the outside and at 225 pounds you see he just can take most ball carriers and push them right back toward their own goal line see a lot of great guys McMillan's like that of course for the gym oh here's their their high five offensive formation four wide receivers at the bottom of the screen [Applause] it open was number 89 and have a lot of time well the problem with this kind of thing it's fun to play around where this plan of draw X's and O's with but once the ball snapped with these four receivers we'll all break in different directions the problem is really the quarterback trying to find out which one is like a covey of quail moving out which one do I throw the somebody's going to be open but he has to make his decision to put - let me sort themselves out I will not go for the field goal on forth and a long seven and to the wind that would have been a tough place shot going to be longer now Brett Miller number 72 the right tackle misread the count step that'll draw five they've got a wind problem right you can't really tell from on the field just lucky guard often number 72 five-yard penalty still fourth down it's really hard to tell where the winds going about 30 or 40 feet into the air so in that boat if that wind is carrying above everybody else you really can't tell what's going to happen to it so Prokop will try to drift one down inside the ten yard line Chris Russell is the up back in case they have any fake plan when grabs it and the fair catch just inside the ten yard line but Froy Stratford Miami by 7 or and inside to tan Moreno to the tight end he has a first hand made the tackle well montt was covering edmonds all the way earlier in the game Edmonds went into the flat the ball was thrown to him this time he goes into the flatten up so you see idioms break this way marked right with it then Edmonds will turn up the field and lose Mont and makes an excellent play down the field now meanwhile you did a blitz from the outside from Curtis all the way so they tried to exchange Motte for Curtis and mock couldn't cover Edmonds beautiful throw by an three in the third quarter for after the home from college star this tripped up at the 35-yard line oh you never trip up this guy let's go to NFL live and Bob Costas now you're putting the pressure on me Richard here's the first play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff of the second half at our head stadium in Kansas City and Dave Craig slings it out to Jeff Chadwick 54 yards later Chadwick is in the endzone for the touchdown and Seattle has turned a 6-3 deficit into a 10-6 lead over Kansas City Decker alright Bob and there's another plan B from the Lions producing with Seattle Jeff Chadwick Marino for the first time James hasty made the tackle Casey doesn't get a lot of calls they usually throw the other side of the field because he is an outstanding cornerback in his third year from Washington State hasty is in pretty good shape then he leaves his man just a little bit and duper smart enough to get whipped so again it's that experience against a very young hasty these corners are really tested but Farina can't get the ball to him today his receivers HD with five interceptions of the rookie in the state [Applause] for reaching out very with a fingertip can be averaged beautifully defense that time dick they showed an eight-man front and then backed into his own you see people coming flying out of their hasty was in position backward wanted to run an out enough thinking that Kelly was covering him and he was right there in his own now that's beautifully done that defense was masked and it even fooled somebody like Dan Marino aids the Jetson past coverage with the ten deflections and three fumble recovery [Applause] in the ground the Sammy Smith out to the Jets 49 yard line Nichols around the ankles with the tackle Radford coming back after serious knee surgery last year now let's go to the ticker and check on other scores quickly third down and long Seattle's lead cut to the 33 just one in the flowery if the field goals to beat the Raiders has three more today and Orleans now big against Tampa Bay long three [Applause] underneath complete the Stratford first down at the 43 Curtis and Michael maze with the tackle has an option on that play to break in or out is up to Moreno to read that great strat for the course is breaking the defenders that are there now Stratford will end up breaking inside but he also has the option to break out according what the defense does now Moreno reads that right with Stratford he'll break in sit down and catch the ball Tony Nathan do that so effectively effectively many years with Miami 22:50 now me leading Tim three Bradford again is six catch of the game James hasty with a tackle possibly the Dolphins have an answer to this eight-man front because they shifted Edmonds to the outside they put Rockford in a wide receiver position in a double win and when they shift out there's their tight end here's their running back and that's forced this defense to spread out and go into an automatic zone to see a zone defense stratford pivoting to a stop and catching it another first down again they're shifting to the same thing trying to spread that defensa and shifting into the slot left [Applause] really pressured just able to get that one out of his hands his pals Lipton Joe Mott were right there Clifton 59 was high school ball state Texas quarterback II feel that that's really helped him in reading deep defenses through that middle linebacker did you know when you check on these guys backgrounds so many of them were the first to star athlete on the team and often the quarterback he Carroll you know Little Crow back by erikak villain another case of defensive strategy Macmillan looked like he was going to be deep and came right up and stopped that screen in Marino never son just a beautiful job Marino's gonna go to his right look back at mitla McMillan has slipped inside of everybody that's listen to Macmillan apply the leather [Applause] that'll make Ernie Macmillan Papa Ernie a Pro Bowl tackle where the Cardinals are the only father-son Pro Bowl combination in NFL history Ernie pro-bowl safety [Applause] the pressure was on in this bird and Marvin Washington surrounding the boy that wall started out Nisan and decided that tumble end over in his Armour said as he threw it might have brushed it against the blocker mark Dennis stewey on of itch is going to try a 54-yard field goal and he with the wind at his back certainly makeable he has a fifty free honor this year and last year here kicked a 59 yarder [Applause] to the right [Applause] 102 left in the third nothing to be embarrassed about missing from 53 yards so Jana Allstate soccer star in Michigan the Detroit area a nice cool Justice Pat Leahy was an all-america soccer player st. Louis University and this well with a missed field goal to just get decent field position after 36 billion Kenneth [Applause] intercepted picked off by Makai er the former 49er [Applause] Oh [Applause] the deflection him has his third intersection of the year Makara was just standing there in the ball came to him really not a very good pass there's a winter from the outside the ball bounces straight up in the air to the tire who was in the atmosphere in the area was the intended receiver well covered he does fall in bounce wait was he out of bounds when he released that ball up he'll be a replay on this is not a bounce when he's out let's see if the injury it'll take another look at that we would think that boy it looked as though that one angle we've had that he lost the ball before he went out of bounds they are reviewing it's gone yes that's going to be the Jets ball number 34 Hector's going to fall on it here and that will be the Jets ball I would think but after what we saw last week let's hold off well that may have been a whistle that's the only thing that would save them that is pretty pretty evident right but right eva's evidence and Don Shula was right there saw it and he's the way he's curling his lips of the jaws he's talking that the characteristic of Shula can't be happy by mataira just had it stripped away a little didn't tuck it to his left arm it's gone that's it unless when it was in the air the jet player 80 Boyer had his foot out of bounds in which case it was a dead ball closing in on the time limit this is a crucial call that will either be Miami at the 34-yard line with the ball or the Jets have a first down at their own 34 well the ball was clearly fumbled and never left the playing field but hit somebody who was out of bounds apparently it will be the Jets ball that'll please this Jets crowd who should let out a big roar when they hear the news is this the matter of where they're going to spot the ball that's what the conference is about now they're using the replay make sure they have the ball spotted correctly Moreno of the disbelief get the nose [Applause] [Applause] so much higher with an interception in a high note for Miami with a 10 free lead and then has it stripped away and Johnny Hector alertly fell on it when it appeared the play was over Decker didn't take any chances it should be the 34 yard line that's what they're discussing [Applause] right on the 34 to made a decision I would plan now to go back again there is an official dick that was that came upon the scene why didn't he come upon the scene earlier if he had a different view of it they must be saying that whose foot was out of bounds the ball must have hit him but why didn't the official just come up and say that in the first place the play on the field was ruled the player out of bounds we had an inadvertent whistle oh the old it launched to Miami first down the Erland inadvertent whistle trick why didn't they say that in the first place yeah that's what that is upsetting him for coaches it must drive you crazy if that was the case they knew it immediately why did they even review it inadvertent whistle well dine Shula got a break there was right in front of the veteran headmaster of the dolphin from the 34-yard line I agree with Ruth you know Burton whistle in the instant replay maybe we could make a package and just give that to someone there must be a needy country for needy a team or if the area does give it to someone this is our our society sophisticated society I guess but why didn't the official just comp see I blew the whistle and that's all it would have taken there we'd even had a replay meanwhile Stratford with an outstanding run final second third period burritos thinks he saw the safety up in here to blitz is going to throw the ball complete [Applause] appears to have a first down the end of the third period of 10 3 Miami we'll be back after these messages from your local station Dick Enberg wolf dick I swear I can't it's I think the instant replay is this we've created more problems kind of is they had a chance to clarify something but why would a man who blew the whistle wait until all that process is completed then come up say I blew the whistle because I think the instant replay has really taken some of the decisiveness away from officials on the field at this point I can argue hey side of the fourth quarter [Applause] down to two as Moreno brofist tracker jackers all the way to the two yard he's be with attack become the big play man in the short game of Dan Marino here in the second half that's his seventh reception Thank You Nate Marino's taken advantage of an automatic defense the Jets fake the Blitz then rotated into his own defense when Marino audible but in doing so they let Stratford open on the sidelines so it was a beautiful job by Marino and an excellent audible the Jets I'm sure are sort of in a stupor right now after what just happened at the Ty's Stratford's career-high they catch as he comes out Logan is in and they split Logan out to the right and pony pays who has a touchdown with a cash flowing up the middle but not for much he said he's a seven-year guy that just feels like a rookie now with Miami Tony paid good-natured talented radio now had his own show in the Washington DC area for about three years you know he can exert himself as a leader because he feels he belongs previous clubs each year he was ready to be cut in his mind how can you be a leader when you're not even sure you can be around second goal [Applause] I'm Melina [Applause] just a little over a minute played in the fourth quarter Miami trying to add to a seven-point lead where the ball was the line judge whistling is dead and bruised consulates team giving up one easy score when had a punt hit a jet players leg at the six yard line and now at his second and goal at the two [Applause] formation Jensen the other way to Logan recovered at the 1-yard a year ago dick we were here to do that the jet buffalo game what a difference in the New York Jets this would look at the character this team is starting to develop all the bad breaks they've had and the miscues to hang in there year ago they were just a waste of time Roy Foster's come in and we'll play a tight end so they're announcing is eligible to see their number 61 [Applause] all right this should be Baxter over the top with just inches to go in Bricktown just didn't get in with a second effort mark Logan another plan B Tony Paves leading the way with a block they hand him stopped there for a moment but it was Paige pushing in front of him yes got it in official who called the no fumble inadvertent whistle has the touchdown call strictly second effort because he was stopped or that is a good effort by a little played at Kentucky and the extra points right there 17 the Jets three with his second touchdown of the year for the Dolphins and a 17-3 lead and Miami through to its performance on this year allowing only three points and a total of 130 yards to the Jets and the defense now has a two touchdown lead with which to work in or dick the pushing them acquire fumble but the past itself that led up to that was bad the receiver was covered it was thrown too hard and it just bounced right into Mike Hyers hands but that's what's killing the Jets is their passing game just isn't being seen more I guess to to get it right trouble is quick and runs into his own land the Jarvis Williams another tackle is a 39 check the Xerox 10-minute ticker Buffalo now in a run away against Phoenix we'll go eight and Kansas City leads by six all these in the fourth the bears buy a couple of touchdown New England as Patriots with a rare opportunity for a win this year and the obviously Bank won against the sample Dave started so well and here in the second half of the year Tim Jensen is the injured dolphin left of your screen look for number 11 Jensen there he is that's really sacrificing herself right into two players he's okay that's why they call him crash we coached him in that Senior Bowl so many years ago and we have Neil Lomax and everyone wanted to see Neil and the Senior Bowl coming out of Portland State Neil Lomax was unproven his first chance to play against major league college players so Jensen was sort of the sacrificial lamb never got to play with Don Shula's got his rights and here he is is a pass receiver and a special teams guy ten years later in Johnny hooker [Applause] Oh Berean clearly doesn't know where to throw the ball he stood there for four or five seconds that time normally he'd be sacked but just by chance the pass rushers went to the outside but look at all the time he's taking look at this and he finally finds somebody right the last minute normally that's a sack so Ken has to get the ball off quicker maybe it's a new offense but historically you've done the same thing [Applause] [Music] more six-three that kind of steep he can go cars passing itself can do that that's a beautiful pass tribes are deceptive he was pulling away from you know they say you know that's expressing he can jump out of a building more actually can in the NFL test for a vertically they couldn't really measure because he hit the ceiling of the underneath your gain David attacking commences Malthus the rookie from New Mexico where he set an NCAA record 263 catches there is one Mantha says the futures as the return position the older that receiver and you get a guy like this the sixth round you've done [Applause] thirty third of the came into this weekend leading just holding the ball too long just can't make up his mind what do we look at this look at this now he looks around and sees a passenger he's been sacked so many times I was like he's ready for it 26 times this year they had brakes is from there sure is a pan talking that's a family [Applause] but covered well had trouble sealing the wall but was saved by Jarvis William next Sunday NFL live starts things at 12:30 and San Diego Kansas City will be a featured game for most of the country got a chance of you to see high powered houston and warren moon that the top pants offense in NFL against the Cleveland Browns new coaching staff we on the Buffalo Jets Indianapolis NFL live at 12:30 shop mentor taking over that Cleveland clouds the run-and-shoot all June shopper can do is to stabilize situation particular some of the anxiety breaks the tackle there equivalent and outside where he gets him out of a dan Marino it's been a ball control offense this year for Shula not that deep down the field Moreno style that produced the big numbers in previous years wide receivers only forward over Mark Clayton injured though in the first half has not returned tight end 1 and 14 throws to the running backs the zone defense the wind so Dan has gone to the people most likely to be open that's a credit to where the Jets really that last play Macmillan team from that safety spot and stop the play again [Applause] the offensive star the second half for Miami close down the villain with Washington the tackle Dennis to the flying start at that time as did Galbreath on the right side of the line that little delay draw broke to the outside and that just came up to feel so hard it couldn't help but make yards there is one choice transferred to bakery has eight catches in this game that isn't a surprise to Miami fans in the last three years Stratford is second only to John Elway receptionist that was an injury [Applause] get it off comes ready Robi everything well it takes physical effort in intensity and desire they do everything well related to that now from a technical standing and the execution standpoint there's still some distance from being a so-called polished football team especially the passing game the effort part of it the organization beautiful 70-pound this feels it at the 30 the Jets Oh Miami I'll tell you this man 'this is a tough guy not only good at look how much courage he's gotten laying right up between people and his lowering his head taking on those big guns look okay the tackle on the kickers gender 89 pull the runner down to the facemask 15 yards where the Queen tackle was 40 Ezio university of pittsburgh if cotesworth coach Dan Bellino all for the penalty in 50 yards to the ticket to the well time is running out so they can have to get in conference they can do it 31 JB brown James heroin Marylyn a twelfth round pick a year ago writing tune on the play Brown has had a great year caste interference missus TV for three hours first down the brown a twelfth round fit Don Cho said we've just kept him around on athletic ability alone he came in without really a lot of sophistication or skills but in one year they've taken this guy pick in the last round made him a starting cornerback in a good one my bro Koval [Applause] to Jeff cross for his 10th here's Jeff cross at 272 pounds and very quick he's halfway blonde dick I mean it's not as though he's beating his man at the line crosses a fine player and the best pass Russian on the Miami team but Oh burns has taken too much time you can't do that and then the other thing Kenny's doing is taking his high office receivers and looking at the pass rushers once he does that he's abroad for he's not a quarterback imitates again David Griggs at the 36 yard line where it'll be third down Koya he and 16 tough to call the plays and stuff the fruits I'm not sure whatever he's gone that pad there's too much chlorine because the timing isn't there in the passing game everything else effort concentration response to the coach wonderful management by Steinberg Vick Steinberg beautiful job of scouting that the passing game just isn't quotient [Applause] intercepted by Jarvis Oh absolute Oliver Oliver and he's all the way to the 40 yard line before Freeman McNeil who's spinning on about well they were hoping Rob Moore that leaping ability could get up higher than the Miami defense but it wasn't to be more was wide open no question about that it looks as though an O'Brien really can't see him he's got the pressure on him so he just throws it down there is he's open he didn't go for the ball my Xerox the document company and fine Mitsubishi bringing you a full line of award-winning automobiles Mitsubishi the word is getting around 34-yard return by Lewis Oliver with his third interception of the year and from the 40 Miami gets four on first down Royce tranfer Gilligan isn't careless to be a rookie coach you got young players to brendham and mistakes that's happened today for the Jets I mean there's just no place to hide you've always got to be alert they come at you from all directions well for just a second he took his mind off what was happening in the game of protected himself well you were there I was there the same kind of games this team the jet team reminds me of the 49ers in 1980 where there was real improvement and we won some games our share of games but frustrating because you don't have a complete arsenal a real boy right now for the Jets and their passing game just take time [Music] as he can and trying to steal the ball I'll be third and 4 to look now at our 10 minute ticker Buffalo breezing still in doubt in Kansas City Bears still lost just one New England gonna win their second of the year Minnesota now has the win 17 7 against the Lions New Orleans apparently will make it 4 and 5 Indianapolis Colts have had a stormy season again you know Buffalo must be for real all that agitation early in the year after Miami beat them we have murdered that team because it now they're stronger every week let's go back to the defense of Miami because that has been the story thus far on this 1990 year figure out the may in the town last year - OH - 72 and 90 they no name defense of the unbeaten seasons of the season of Miami where I compared everything played the full schedule yet we'll show you what's ahead yet from Miami there'll be some the total package gets the bat 11 in the first down well the gypsy plays very few teams that have impressive records that won't be the case for Miami the rest of the way including well there's the last five wins for the Dolphins each team no one had a winning record at the time at the Dolphins beat them Steelers Jets Indianapolis Phoenix and that would be what's ahead will be a more impressive challenge including the Monday night game they finally sold one out after some twenty dates of Joe Robbie so that's good news next Monday that will be the Raiders then at Cleveland at Washington Philadelphia is there and at Buffalo some who have worked hard on adrenalin and spirit start to add that taken out of them a little bit starting will absorb the punishment observe the blockers but Don Shula with all his wisdom has taken such a solid approach condition insurance it's a threat of Toronto's T each game you get better and now they want to capitalize on their progress capitalize on it not so much stop and look back but capitalize on where they are because they know the tough part of the schedule is upcoming but his hope is and it's pretty evident that the team's improving every week meet that competition later in the year they recount vs seven catches not eight wide open his pony mark he's out of the ten not that pitoni stars old number three graphic from Tennessee State they know that he's been thrown into the fire right from the start and had been nice to have been able to save him let him learn behind someone but they learning with his mistakes on the field being tested but they feel much like a STIs going to be a solid cornerback you know they should be pretty good at cornerback in the future hasty and Stargell naturally seasoning by Stargell a lot of the elements are there for the gesture Oh combo by Logan recovered by the Jets at the nine logan having trouble we'll try to get the name with a Jets player that picked it off so they Jets will get it at their own nine yard line with just 248 left of the clear to be Joe Kelly 58 who got the ball obviously there's Kelly and he except the three one at the 9 yard line want to welcome those of you watching in England on channel 4 as you finally NFL action each week for Bill Walton Dick Enberg and all our crew please do join us in a fit if you have any ideas on a thesis how about the inadvertent whistle as a topic Samantha 24-yard second cat Thomas an extra DB from Miami with the tackle 2:41 showing fourth-quarter 17 free Miami and guess a quick summary go see if you agree a Jets defense good enough to be on the field with Maya they played well gets offense against a good team that's the way to go effort and intensity on defense efficiency offensively it does the back of Robby Thomas look I wonder he hit him was intended for Mathis offensively it takes years to get into shape you see the San Francisco 49ers now that's taken really 11 years of the same system of off swing style of coaching we go back down first year second year third when did you finally realize hey we're now a playoff team about midway or 2/3 of the way through our third year because the first two we had losing records but about two-thirds of the way through the third year women oh we're not bad or liquid bubbling and Perry third down and about four with a Berea hoping he might strike for something but of course they dolphins got three men way back member sack for Griggs he has two and a half cents today he's from Virginia where he plays the Jeff Lachman with a Cavaliers bogman they starting defensive end for the Jets what what a transition between the two games the giant game in this one Messi Jay King do I believe he's holding a knee and that's been the bad news for Miami Mark Clayton in the entry has not returned Jr now holding a lead Logan went out with an e bracket Bryan almost intercepted there was Mathis and so is what tired and Miami takes over on down well Don Shula has a team what do you think they are compared to the AFC I think no question they're in the top four or five teams in the division it's just going to be interesting to see how he matches up with lost of the Giants are only lost now he's got to play those other tough customers in the NFC East Philadelphia Washington and go to Buffalo for the rematch in Buffalo staying with him stride for stride both the 8 and 1 after I think Miami's so close now I think weather conditions would have a lot to do with in with anybody they'll play very well in bad weather but they're going to have to have Marino's passing I think we win the championship first weather has a factor Logan Curtis 47 and the Jets will spend a timeout so they're looking at the scoreboard with their hearts Kamik Iyer as an interception and almost another today and with that timeout let's pause for this word whenever my brother Tommen is he does the greatest of all time at thing with you just beautiful to watch and I'm a nerd is Bashir the retired numbers here you bank the coach little guy tough to bring down McMillon was their first well the bills have to said oh you big guys picking on me New York chefs will expand their tail surprisingly one top motor I'll enough is one top guarantee ask your participating service that are about Quaker States top lubrication guarantee 250,000 miles or ten years register your new car absolutely free at a participating service center use only quaker state have all instructor chains as directed at a service center and if any lubricated engine part suffers an are related breakdown you're covered Quaker State guarantees it in writing the big Q is with Buffalo with an overwhelming lead against Phoenix their seventh in a row they only lost two money AME so Miami with that victory that's the difference in the division but Buffalo and rich stadium will host Miami the second week before the end of the season the Jets will go four and six in their hopes of five and five - the bit but a schedule ahead that should provide the Jets with more wins and this - are big and the two boys are at home of Miami NFL live standing by they'll have all the highlights of this day all the standings anew so stay with us right after the final gun Tony page came back to follow his former teammates the Jets with his blocking primarily and it don't often get a chance to really credit the man in front of the goal Karen page is so good in the past few years the Dolphins haven't had a blocking back guy that would pay the price this guy's naturally suited for everything they do a pass protector a receiver beautiful run blocker can block the linebackers and give them leadership they're just outgoing leadership enthusiasm their Washington area was on the same high school team with Mike Johnson the line Beckwith Cleveland and Steve Smith running back the graders was a backup of high school to another timeout and that'll be all for the Jets well their determination of youth they're not going to knuckle under until that final might cost a gun no question Don Shula's calling inside running plays and fighting the time go but the judge won't let him do it we look at the other scores late to finals now New Orleans a Detroit of one and now a final Indianapolis defeats New England so the Colts in the fourth quarter score to go three and six and New England now at this bold one Annie the AFC East pretty well determined now as to eight ones Buffalo Miami Jets four and six Indianapolis three and six in New England hey others going to sit on the ball now before we hang up for the day I just want to get my love Dorothea Shula a special person they go down feel that fight and who goes to mass every morning every morning Catholic man's this is the old amok football coach this man has everything he and the vince lombardi would have to be considered in any error the very very best ever and the enthusiasm he has even when his team was wasn't very good in recent years Peter Richman and the National had an interesting feature on Shula this week and he said he has a face that belongs in footballs Rushmore against the Hall of Fame coaches there's a Shula's record he deserves to be in that list doesn't it oh he's right at the top or right with Lombardi to me at the top of course different eras Paul Brown certainly and any number of others 120 to go in my lifetime this is a man and I had the most respect for and football players those who played for him with Miami and with the Colts and those who played on a Pro Bowl team with him say boy what an experience just to be around it but let's see how you have a little we got a little time here best record against this is the hundreds and the 11th coach consulate that he is coached against his best record 12 and 1 is were stolen six kind of surprising who those are for the best record against a Hall of Famer norm Van Brocklin his worst record was unable to beat Tom Flores and the Raiders only six we add it all up and you look at how he's covered generations of football with the same enthusiasm he adapted from a running game to a passing game now back to a running game and very cute portraits of this there's the final play of the game on the kneel down by Dan Marino and Bruce consulate will go back to work his young team played hard and determined but they also made mistakes today and that led to a 17-3 Miami win as the Jets could not dent the NFL's the number one defense well Bruce shaking hands with Shula would be the start of his career in the sense he's now in the big leagues when we say he's got to just have patience with his team I think he'll do that but he has to have patience with the press
