[Applause] [Music] Martin's second ernhardt third Martinsville Virginia September the 23rd [Music] Earnhardt second Martin third North Wilkesboro North Carolina September the 30th Martin wins Earnhardt second Martin has earned almost 39 hundred points Earnhardt a mere 16 behind will today's mello Yello 500 be the championship buster stand by [Music] the mellow yellow' 500 is brought to you by Coors towards the Rocky Mountain original and by today chevrolet who invites you to see why nobody's winning like the heartbeat of America and by havilland superior great motor oil white sludge protects engines and by Goodyear tires Goodyear because there really is a difference [Music] look at this crowd it is the largest sports gathering in the Carolinas it's race day at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the 500 for 31 years they've come every autumn on this weekend to enjoy Winston Cup racing hello everyone I'm Ken Squier and welcome to the 31st mellow yellow' 500 $765,000 at stake 41 drivers are at the ready to run some 334 laps on this mile and a half track to make the 500-mile distance a lot of stories have been developing the past couple of days my colleagues with Johnny Hayes from the great driver Neil Bonnett let's get right to what's going on here John Kidd in the final Winston Cup practice yesterday Harry again hit the wall hard in turn 2 destroyed his race car he has had to go to a backup car as a result of that he has to move from second starting position all the way to the rear of the field car has been having trouble all week in two turns Neil what do you think is causing it Johnny you sir come as no surprise to us we've seen it all week long here car slipping and sliding all over the racetrack in the past I ran the bias ply tires Charlotte which is a more forgiving tire the radios are here now these tires don't have any forgiving area when the car slips a little bit they break completely loose the cars are gone there's another factor compounding the whole problem we have here up in turn four the track is Burgess slipping down this ripples all through the corner the track painted a little red line so you can avoid it but you can't avoid about 160 miles an hour along with the radios dodging the ripples they're going to have their hands but we're going to see if these drivers can open ago she ate those two problems at the same time all day long let's make some more of our broadcasting team right now and go to the STP fifth center standing by is Mike joy Thank You Ken this is a festive day but with a somber tone 22 year old Rob Barroso the Busch grand national champion and the leading Winston Cup rookie driver died late last Sunday night in a two-car highway accident Tammy Williams the driver of the other car involved also perished we mourn their loss today on the kind of day Rob Moroso liked best a race day in the Carolinas let's go now to the front of this starting grid to the editor and publisher of national sweet sport news Cristiano Mackey thank you Mike I'm alongside the man in the car that was the Machine and driver to watch in May is this driver car combination brekford I'm going to be the car to watch today shall we hope so Chris and I was like the state Bill's been so good here in the world six hundred came up a little short to making it to the end and we don't want that to happen today we got to make it all the way to the 500-mile Drive and hopefully we're the first guy to cross that start/finish line Brett would the focus on the championship between Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin which one of those two men are you concerned about mulch well I think Marcus will run extremely good and you know it bail is going to run good anywhere he goes I'm not concerned about just those two cars I got 39 other guys behind me that are running awful good we've got to worry about all of them and you know it's the kind of race that you got to be around at the end of you got to have a good combination at the end hopefully we'll have a good place to stay good we'll be watching now let's go back up pit road to my globe-girdling colleague Bob Varsha thanks Chris Dale Earnhardt brings his famous black Chevrolet number three here to Charlotte with a chance to become the richest driver in Speedway history more important he trails for driver Mark Martin by just 16 points for a possible fourth Winston Cup championship and it's billion dollar bonus but Charlotte has not been kind to him particularly this rate dropping out being a first man out last year costing a shot at the title his last nine starts here have yielded an average finish 21 now what's it going to take to get your recent run of bad luck turned around here in the 500 and it's your net for hunt I don't know we got bad luck here but still that's not one of our worst racetrack it's one of our better ones always run good or the car is competitive here so if we just can stay out of trouble and I have any bad luck with the car itself we've you know gotten wrecks here and broken camshafts and engines and things and just keep that bad luck away I think we'll be okay your title rival Mark Martin starts five rows ahead will you be watching him or just going for the checkers well I think it got a lot of other guys right around me I need to watch start with if it's been like the last several races we got to come down to racing that sixth car to n so that's what I'm looking forward to the end of the race have a safe race Dale you've met the Chevy half of this classic Chevy Ford confrontation now let's go meet the Ford Starr with Chris economy key well I'm with Mark Martin the man who is leading the point bet on the closest fight for the championship in NASCAR history as this green flag waves today mark what is going to be primarily on your mind well just finding the spot to run and let the racetrack get it in condition that it's going to be in for the most of the race and then relate to the crew what the car feels like and what we need to do to adjust to it this racetrack is very temperamental to the Sun and to the heat and we figure it'll be a chassis game all day long you know working on the chances what about that championship that in the back of your mind well if we can win this race we'll take care of the points thing if if we can't we always do the best we can to take the Folgers thunderbird to victory lane and you know that's what's on our mind the points will take care of themselves well good luck to mark fine let's go back down to Mike joy they fire the engines out on the grid upstairs Neil Bonnett resident premier driver expert and I've got my own ringer here in the STP pit center championship crew chief Barry Dodson Barry they're driving as fast as they can every race it's pit strategy and pit stops that are winning a lot of these races it is going to be Mike the difference here today the radial tires something we didn't have in May we're right in the midst of a duel for the championship also you got a lot of good teams a lot of good drivers that need to win and Barry will have his unique viewpoint with us as the afternoon goes on you've met our commentary team save one let's go all the way to the other side of the fence and Mark Pfister thank you very much Mike there's over a hundred and fifty thousand plus fans packed into the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the mellow yellow' 500 today they come from oh gee 50 different states a dozen different countries and they're ready for a great race now if you know somebody who's here from Hawaii we get to meet anybody from Hawaii or Alaska give us a call give us their seat number and we'll be looking for me we'll talk to them on the air light afternoon again boys he's asking for a job and a half I think it was 30 May in fiction vision well there you see the field ladies and gentlemen will show you how they qualified then tell you the remainder of that story in a moment here's how they'll line up for the mellow means and Michael Waltrip well back today row 19 is Eddie Bierce well and Bobby Hillin in the car number eight in row 20 is Dave Marcus and Mark stall and the provisional starter is Alan Kovac now remember that the man who qualified outside the front row his car yesterday Harry Gant now relegated to the rear of the field as they get set for a start ken Schrader trying to win this race this afternoon in car number 25 make it back-to-back only three other drivers in history have done that Ken something has happened that I think can change the whole complexion of the race become real cloudy we practice all week in the sunshine everything's been nice hot sunshine now it's getting clouds great assortment of cultural events take place here the child of motor speedway is part of the warm-up to this great race are about to see in this extraordinary time and here's the 1990 entry into the annual AJ wheeler Film Festival sparkling performance by Sparky Spangler falling about 200 feet you know they give Emmys and they give Grammys they give Oscars well here 4h a humpy wielded the man who puts it all together they give the humpty-dumpty award here's this year's winner Brian Carson not the subtlety of this from one looks like mold buddy God for domes to hardens the top Google cars he walked away folks wants to come back and try it again because he did hit the end of the receiving ramp trying to jump 300 feet in a Cadillac Seville unbeliev all right now you see the new assortment of the front row is Schrader moves up to just move up that outside row leaving Brett Bodine on the pole for the first time in Schrader alongside as we settle down for a start and come to the line and the axmen now gets real serious here for 334 laps standby for TBS live coverage of the mellow yellow' 500 from the Charlotte Motor Speedway [Music] five drivers have won this race in the poll what I'm trying to make it six Lorenz and it isn't sixty five blocks back here most recently Harry gasps back in 1982 only one person what I'm from here an here extremely strong a year ago here's the man to watch number four coming to the bottom Ernie Irvan and they stack bun three wide as they fight him down in a straightaway these pictures from pod number 66 trickle brings the bike the first time Redfoo dying in the car number 26 falling back to Ernie Irvan up in front the Chevy of Ernie Irvan the Morgan McClure car now goes into the lead and guess who's tacking along as you wise now with Brett Bodine in second spot old car during the Quaker State in-car camera coming out of a straightaway this is the battle for the lead completely like too earning certainly didn't waste any time showing what he had so he's going to probably go out try to leave a little bit since I take care that car because that cars really strong third is Davey Allison and then the old back there in court for the moment Lodi they shuffled Martin back here's Earnhardt charging to the inside on ricky rudd and number five [Music] for the track you know kid wall director watches that John said earlier the tracks under different conditions we went from the green flag to their overcast to saw it out now so to switch back and forth all day but earliness race these guys be sorting these cars out it's a long way to go but Ernie Irvan scooter showing a lot of strength early traffic right with him comes earn life as far as the track right here is what all the guns are really having to deal with all four we don't overemphasize it but if that's the place to be gathered or unfair to get rid of a checkered getting off turn four without any problem up in front it's Ernie Irvan on the number 4 car he works the fifth lap with Bret Boone I'm in the second spot reviewing for two baby Allison continuing for third down the back straightaway swapping positions there's the leader there's second place in turn for search he is part of the track you see them beginning to battle now for second place Davey Allison is getting challenged the dill here you are right he was behind as he tried to close in again on Ernie Irvan Ernie had made the statement earlier in the week lose all the sports bell going on he thought he had a shot at winning the race and he wants to search that car right now who's that boy coming up Davey Allison floss number nine Elliot in the third Elliot on the charge he started nice on the event now open third place for the league [Music] I think a lot of fans wonder where did brett bodine come from why is he all of a sudden so awesome did he find a miracle yeah see in the miracles name is Jim Brooklyn he headed up the Buick v6 horsemen greatly good friend now he's concentrating his time on the 26 car driven by Bravo dial great battle with the lead three cars in the fight here comes bode I'm back on the inside curve and runs wheels away with it Eliot pulls up Allison just lined into the black car Ernie Irvan goes back in front here but what's the biggest thing you've learned this year in the Winston Cup circuit well the biggest thing I've learned is the same thing I forget really the NS patient I learned patient and that's the hardest thing I've learned in my career racing but it's a quickest thing you can forget so long as I keep my head on straight keep thinking I think we're win more races back to the line comes bowtie then first and down comes Elliott for second urban back to third Jimmy Bruce man this up here is to General Motors cars to port product cars going at it Ford Chevrolet dick in the back straightaway run five bars now Alison bowtie Strickland getting in there's Richard Petty we've just completed 25,000 miles of competition at the shop of motor speed as he came through last number seven completed twenty five thousand miles in this track Richard Petty working his way to the field after a good qualifying run will follow his story this afternoon here in the mellah yellow 500 often front it continues to be Brett Bodine Bill Elliott Ernie Irvan maybe Allison Jeff Gordon fighting it out we'll be back with more the excitement of the Bella yellow 500 on CBS in a moment [Music] you but yes we have true you have true value anti max looks good cause you'd rather the little mountain okay [Music] kay let's guard really wannabe please papa you [Music] one two one two three four five later in today's race somebody by default will win I was going to do true value and then at IMAX audio method yes sir okay [Music] at Charlotte Motor Speedway quick look at the true value of hard charger standings for the season Earnhardt with a commanding lead unlike the Winston Cup point chase today as hard as charger gets $1500 from True Value Hardware stores also will be looking with our Timex speed tracks at a time X fastest lap of this 500-mile race while we were away in commercial break Bill Elliott took his board to the bottom of the racetrack underneath Brett photons coming up out of 4 made this pass for the lead Elliott now is stretching it out on the field let's go back to live action with Ken Squier as they work the 15th lap back to live action and here is Elliott in front and drawing away from the field getting a tremendous advantage of is the surprise in the early going has ernie irvan's number four saves in second place 35 car lengths to the leader there is bourbon in that Kodak car number for one in a second and then the number 26 acres take our breath away scribbled is Rivest is viewing developed by Bobby Allison pulled itself into 52 seven cartridge by Alan Kulwicki 33 car driven by Harry and he started all the way to back or up to 20 and 21st position right now so those cars are working well moving through the front [Music] here you see Elliot up in front running on radials today putting your radials are making their Charlotte they do this weekend folks what Bill Elliott had to say about the future of Radio Times [Music] more than hope going right here as he continues to draw away from the field car is working perfectly safe a lot more than hope to make that happen second spot is Ernie Irvan third spot is Bodine fourth is Strickland this is Davey Allison and success rate P&V alien has always been a dominant part this racetrack I think did hit the perfect set up but it does not surprise me to see Oh forward or Vallely and leaving a trace this track has had characteristics for the court ages for the past few years that the cars really accelerate off the corner here we will have a good combination and seem like the track change a little bit of corfu races until was all they've got it back on track now Dehlia clamoring down to get around lobby handles and put him a lap down are they Hamilton showing his new colors he'll be flying in 1991 and Winston Cup racing we just got word that car 57 has a tire going flat and I'm sure he's going to try to wait for a caution if something should happen but if you can't and something that quick he's going to come in on his own to get it corrected Jimmy Spencer number 57 and the entire problem that's one thing that you get into with the radios the tires are so strong feeling that you can have a target or low and run on the inner ladder for a while the inner tire if you're not careful the thing will blow out and you know he's got to be careful to see if you get in with sight let's take a look at this battle a little further back here's the 27 car that's Rusty Wallace he's working in eighth spot with him his bow dine and now Wallace has just moved around but I knots 4/7 Wallace in the black cars in seventh and look at the wig wag it goes Wallace just float on to the inside trying to take that spot and I think that's a perfect example with the weather change the cloud cover a lot of these real good Winston Cup cars point leaders are just not working real well in these conditions and they're just hoping to get the income down pit road to make the changes they need to make 75 car is running in ninth Rick Wilson and Ricky Rudd is in 10th continue to follow this battle for seventh fire it's a dandy woloson number 27 bow nine and eleven swapping it back and forth 20 laps complete you also have to understand when you run side by side back that way you slow all cars down so it gives a leader chance to pull further away from you these cars need to get in single file but they're not going to live because bowed I'm done well rusty by him rusty dead will float on by and notice that the six cars tailing these columns here Mark Martin is running in 11th place Dale Earnhardt is currently in 14th you know doesn't end that right there with Mark Sutton like he is that's kind of his characteristic their game plan to stay in the hunt and then to come on over at the end the race what the concern should be that Earnhardt is not making the movement you think you would he always goes to the front he's not be there doing the other one making the movement Walter he started in 25th he's now up challenging out here just behind the 27 notice the old right there Darrell Walker crashing through this group trying to come three wide down to the inside Waltrip Wilson right in front of him and as they come by the 27 Wallace save seventh Bodine is a rut is nine Wilson ten Waltrip now 11 Mark Martin is backed up the 13th Kyle Petty has taken 12 I don't think that marks cars working as well as you might wish I don't think so either if it's in the same shot right here if Geoff hood on and he seemed to be faltering a little bit and yesterday afternoon in practice he was probably the fastest car on the racetrack in practice would go right back the same thing we've got a different date in position four we thought yesterday the race track changed drastically almost every 30 minutes or every pit stop I think we're gonna have the same kind of is going to be able to people win this race will be the people have like buried oxygen too kruky know how to adjust those race cars there's Kyle Petty in the 42 nipping down to the inside to pick up another spot right now comes to 8:00 in the number-5 car and right behind him is Rick Wilson of the 75 Oldsmobile and still charging up to tenth comes Darrell Walker for his 20 good starting position trying to speak they're all running that well we know he's recovering on a daily basis that certainly good to see him have that kind of run here's Mark Martin in the six remember that he is running in 13th position and he's trying to get around will died and for good reason because just few car lengths behind him number three Earnhardt is on the move battle for the championship you see the 3 car Rowley right in there and getting a 1 car interval in between them Mark Martin now 12 load I'm thirsty and Earnhardt for seniors sometimes after Winston Cup racing as to how they're collected here we are going into the last races of the season 16 boys depart Earnhardt to challenge it to Mark Martin the leader in this a little bit different let's be weightless the three in the sixth part of the leaders this is the first time that American visa have acquittal the point they're struggling the rustic our getaway [Music] Dale Earnhardt three-time Winston Cup champion Villa Elliot 1988 Winston Cup champion stays in front of Brett board I in the pole-sitter Elliott just running away from the field collecting better than two and a half seconds in the early going now 28 laps complete and he's on a thrash hey billions mother no red attended this rain firmly afterwards he had a devastating stroke but is left for very many didn't fully recovered and she's here today to watch bill this is her first race is one years old a bomb better than three seconds as they weren't xxx left with Ernie Irvan maintaining third Ken Schrader and course and hot Strickland the early going at fifth Davey Allison six and Wallace is in seventh here at the mellow yellow' 500 live coverage on TBS of this Winston Cup Classic so if you fly into the front [Music] annika clock first a second and one day to put thank you for Sparky you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] they're at 33 laps complete 33 laps out of 334 CBS sports brings you live coverage of the mellow yellow' 500 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Bill Elliott now ranges five seconds in front of the field Brett Bodine is in the runner-up spot with Ken Schrader third Ernie Irvan fourth it's Ford Buick Chevy Chevy Ford on the top five leaderboard now Elliott continuing to draw away from the field to knock before the last on the number 44 Bob Tullius car goes into turn number one demonstrating great running ability here no harder than we've ever seen him go this early in a race must feel good Jinja this is kind of surprised we've been points battle points battle just got lads that got past it early it just slipped out there decided to drive off the field he's got that thing rolling right along one thing it's important to where everybody doesn't stay in Bill Elliott found the combination about six or seven races ago and he's been real competitive everywhere he's being rammed right on the short track I expect him to run through for the rest of the year wouldn't be surprised then get another couple wins running on radial tires for the first time at the Charlotte Motor Speedway here's what Elliot has to say about them I think the future is very new we need to learn a lot more about the power and we've had some good run if we learn a lot of Alice's season but I think he's coming along very well [Music] apparently he's learned something some others haven't in the way of coin here at this point Dick Trickle giving is this a helmet calm shot she's a number 20 in memory Robbie Rosa look at him bounce over that number four area Neal damn that's exactly what we were talking about there's ripples right there coming off the floor turn and if anybody thinks it's nice blue that looks time to smooth that there's a good indication a lot of time the shot from inside the car is a fixed camera that's mounted solidly this right here is what the torso the driver is doing spelling around the entire time this is mounted on top of his helmet and it's personally up to them if you'll follow the car right in here the car is going really move around and about a hundred yards right here the car really gets the bouncing and that's the thing that's been given the drivers are fit all week long get lined up over those ripples good straight shot the thing I love about that leo Bonnie just eat his heart out cause he's not out there how much fun it is to do that that really does not look I just don't know how they could be that much fun deal well you see the angle world right there sideways the world straight to me now can't recognize anything always would get sadly I was Dick Trickle back to 21st in the early going not all this change in position in front ken Schrader defending champion who started fourth he bringing for Rick Hendrick Chevrolet up in the second spot Brett Bodine Buick Falls to third to green and white number 26 and from bogans vanish see how they look this shot right here is oh you want good shock absorber these race cars out here's the car with all the suspensions that's absorbing it the driver goes the bouncing around but these guys evidently this car here when is set on the pole they certainly got the right confidence you can see his hands didn't move his bad you didn't seem to be bouncing news much I think crystals cars not working as well as his car is and Bodine was rather a trickle was running a much higher line we're seeing Bodine Bodine is much closer to the bottom of the racetrack down there in Ford and what we saw a big circle in 66 when you race cars running good like this this car said on the pole you can drive the car but whenever the cars off the car drives you trickle has got a car carried him around Alan Kulwicki has been the man on the move a recent and car number seven remember he started all the way out back look at Ko a key now as he moves around Geoff Bodine in car number 11 and comes into 13th spot this is from dead last it's been green all the way if you're just joining us and coalition started as a provisional starter worked his way up into the 13th position that doesn't surprise anyone on pit road Alan Kulwicki was one of the fastest cars in practice and everyone thought he may have a shot at sitting on the pole but he had trouble with this car when he went after qualified never really got to run a lap so that's why him Kancil so he had to start at the back at the race but he really has a good race car [Music] so I'll tell you what Alan has the track record at this racetrack the overall track record and like you talking about John they thought he had a shot at the pole do you see Ernie Irvan putting a lap on Mickey Gibbs in the days in oh one putting him down a lap that is the urban car that's lying in fifth spot there you see hot strickland running in six and a good battle that continues to develop for 18 place there's a rather eighth place as you see number 17 that's darrell waltrip around ricky rudd while dripped from 25th up to eight rut from sixteenth up to ninth number 27 the black car from 12 up to ten running tenth here in the frame he and Jimmy Spencer did finally come down pit road he's on pit road now with that tire going down he did have to stay out he waved it waited but he finally had come in [Music] so Darrell Walker who took great pride today in the fact that he started out to be introduced to the crowd on crutches and he finally said to heck with it click to crunch up and wave did it folks he got a great response you know I need a crutch out here right now angelic being here missus Waltrip I saw her at the hotel last night it was really neat to see her again she looked great such a sweet lady so Darrell's mother and father here in doing well so I think these boys are doing a little bit for their mamas today is doing it to the nines at the present time he is leading and continuing to draw away his advantage amazing for the early going in this race 334 laps will marks the distance here is rut coming back around another time and car number five to eight position Wall Street falls back to ninth and into the clutches of Rusty Wallace just behind him you see Rick Wilson running 11th in the car number 75 and there goes to black number 27 that's while it's taking the high side close again [Music] record speed for this race 149 48 mile an hour average just a year ago by freighter walleston coming back on the inside of that Chevrolet and the Hendrick cars running almost side by side he elects to just nip back in behind number five as they cross the stripe to complete their 46 left everyone better get going in fact that they can and not take it easy goes Bill Elliott is coming quick and he's getting ready to lap a bunch of good cars when you come to a racetrack like this it's a handling racetrack it just takes one guy hitting on the right combination you can vary half of the feel that there wasn't for Bill Elliott the other guys is so far back the few cars left literally it is capable of lapping a lot of real real good race cars until I get that first caution and get the car over thank you look what's happening here my bike is getting into the frame Mike Martin to the bottom out of turn four as he begins to fight his way up the six car Ronnie 11 can you know we were talking earlier about seemed like Mark was weighing back lay back a little bit they're calling on a radio I'm sure telling them every lap how far back or what feels close a move like this that shows you he's got a little bit left there pacing herself right now Darrell Waltrip made his comeback in Richmond just four weeks ago on a TBS telecast after a wreck in Daytona back in July we asked him why he got back in his race car without being fully healed don't have to carry our clothes we just ride it the and I think I don't know if that's a good analogy or not old football players certainly play hurt with the fractures and strains and bruises and basketball players even golf you know they play with bad backs tennis players play with bad elbow so I think it just maybe they're more obvious here because of the crutches and the limping that goes over hell with with the injuries we have but I think most athletes that are really dedicated to what they do care about what they do love what they do they perform hurt a lot more than the average person may realize you know we're very lucky right now to have our very glossy the leaderboard in 50 laps very much how long can he fuel stop will be looking these guys coming on green stuff yeah we're going to be looking at like from 55 to 60 laps you got to be concerned about with a regular hire inside or staggered or any of these cars that are Fuji like the one of us Wallace right now that mileage is going to go down [Music] we'll be finished in the next five or six left a lot of times becoming only the horse I'll make sure a philosopher will be coming up pretty quickly with normal pit stops remember made by Kulwicki take a look at number 33 here's Jan who has qualified on the outside of the front row in the number 33 car well now he pulled himself up to 15th spot he's challenging number 11 Jim 4/9 440 and he shepherded Harry Gant told me this morning that he was disappointed the tragedy of the car but this is old house the gold favorite car and he's won two races with and he said boy it's going to be good to get back no Alf again I think we'll have a shot at he said if we can't run from the back of the problem [Music] yeah yeah government that doll growing arrogant up to 14th position Phil Elliott continues to lead with Schrader and second more from Charlotte shortly [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] they also found quarter three way your way yeah ghetto cam steady use the status onion mine's working good Nilka status in the passage to first [Music] [Music] well here you see Bill Elliott leading at the 57th lap of the 330 four laps to be run in the mellow yellow' 500 in Charlotte Motor Speedway as Richard Petty comes on pit road for right-side rubber the lead is a healthy one better than four seconds Elliott over Schrader there's Petty's number 43 on pit road getting serviced now getting back out to this race as we watch number 11 the bowtie car in 16th position challenged by Dick Trickle and from our truck arctic onboard camera back in 17th spot the challenge for 16th [Music] great picture of their going through as they covered this mile and a half track take a trickle back once again up on that 17 degree banking and closing in another time working to the inside Rusty Wallace is just coming down pit road so all the top cars are starting to qualify here's one of the best pit crews in Motorsports Chris economy is there wow they're making a chassis just on the Left where Wallace's car is going in and there he goes and that was a quick field that were rusty one of the defending champion sanctionable when he came in he was in tenth position Buddy Baker in pity rusted changed two tires a couple people before it changed for be interesting to see if these top cars take two or four it's a buckle radio even though they've had some trouble with the tires get away from up a little bit there's good wear with the tires it's not a lot of difference to speed with us over here so two tires lightly built along when I think a lot of these teams will take two and hope that Bill Elliott takes four because he had two big lead so that will help them get away from him a little bit there's a leader catching up Bobby Hillin going down the back side here is Davey Allison on pit road Brett Bodine is in Mickey Gibbs there's derrike copes number 10 coming down off the jacks Mark Martin is now fitting car number six Mark Martin interest was running 10th Chris's there again the champion just left here's water the black mark Scarlets me we've not happy with its handling right sighs that almost went over the hose that would be a penalty but he didn't and he's off on a fine stop okay there was a finer adjust but it looked like about one round in the left rear so when you're all fake right that's right a lot every day off is particular kind of fine-tune if they don't know where they want it Ricky right is sitting here you see Schrader on pit road tensley pitting the number 20 car ernhardt maybe getting ready to come in reported he may have a bit of a problem Co which is in a number 7 car and he's been in there a little long he's the only one I've seen so far for four tires or foot four tires of woodland car here's Alan Kulwicki coming out a dirty urban pits Morgan Shepherd is video it's all under green and we're now working the 60 second lap I wasn't overly assertive and I think you were listen to him because there are definite road wired open now what's his pit crew work I'm Abed you can change to mop arches there Dale Earnhardt over suits the pit just event that's not going to make it easy on Kurt Selma died in the voice is suffering from a bad horse it hasn't lost position but he is definitely losing ground because Bill Elliott is absolutely flying Elliott was expected in shortly and Earnhardt is going to have to get that car now he falls it Earnhardt is now and Elliott now he fired it away there was Richard Childress for the live rear as we were talking about bark bark where one rail Childress protectorates of authority up so they're all facility leaders coming down pit road number nine Elliott roles in trickle is also fitted now now if your car owner you hoping he could change four tires Bob Barker's waiting on Phil le Bill Elliott pools the course village for to a stop and the crew goes to work a drink for the race leader not many adjustments that I can see no go to put the tires in they're going to fill it up with gasoline Elliott is betting a scalding made here today he's got a full load he's away I make that stop about 13 seconds for part dry without the trailer if anybody card original record is broken split their little fingers he's was a good photo I don't even work he did just change to tire so he once got there and lap a bunch of these other cars of the people that came for there's no fees in big trouble Harry Gant is just kid as a 33 here's Waltrip after this very stout run in the early going he comes in at lap 64 let's go to Mike joy very docile take a look at this pit stop with us and called as a pie crew goes to work okay it looks like Zeus hires Mike I don't see any Jack your judgment Darryl was doing a great job moving from the back to the front how do you make that call to tires or four well Bill Evans or the gorgeous take hold for the thing is as far was good enough he have you got a lap down he could make it up that's the thing when you're running as well as so a good running car in this situation first pit stop would get only - exactly okay and that's the word for one of the courts prettier cruzi very don't also in a few sleep a situation like it just announced a theory of new and there that you're going push bumpers cars fitted off the fourth serve jimmy means getting caught by car number eleven Jeff will dine and spun windshield popping out at Jimmy means automobile just about three hundred feet shy of the start/finish line caution is out at lap 66 well where do we stand with the pit stops with 26 Ford some of those does I don't think a bit they'll pick roof did they left over the leaders whether if it's like shake it out for his Dale going to be interesting just after the majority of cars had come in and made a green flag stop we get a caution as Jimmy means gets tagged by the number 11 oval diamond spun just all the way out of turn four is what I'm coming back to the line let's look at the replay Neal see what happens here we picked it up 11 cars but already stamped the rear give me things like Jeff we're just low I got together to gave a little show their targets back with the wind chill blows out over there [Music] well Jimmy means is back underway there is a full-course caution let's take a look from another angle [Music] it's like Jeff got a good strong run up off the corner get the got into the rear Jimmy jerking around right there it's hard to tell what the set of circumstances worth bleep into it but it may be ran upon him in a hurry or maybe even though Jimmy was get ready to turn down pit road 67 laps are complete we are now under caution here in the mellow yellow' 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway back with more live action in the moment [Music] [Music] [Music] hi-yah go to my what Fred yeah yes what says the drought was awful because now it's a conversational bonnet to take to Xena don't do it - fold these over because when they get taped down and messes up this okay thank you [Music] you I have that lead down my hand Fred [Music] first winter smoking real bad citizen vote and their other look at this winner yeah [Music] back with you once again here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Hut Stricklin has just pitted car number 12 the Allison car after it had such a good strong run earlier first caution of the day after an incident turn number four Jimmy means got turned around by what was the lead car at the time Jeff would I you know in our business we get to talk to a lot of athletes and that's fun but it's different wonderfully different when a driver talks to one of his own our intrepid Neil Bonnett set off with camera crew in tow and here's the result Dale it seems like every year if you're right in the middle as points battle you want to think three times and some of these battles have always kind of got out of control you know the deal with Waltrip he'd make a few barbs and you'd come back with him on things in it at times it got kinda out of hand the fans would blow it all out of proportion and it got to be just a fun deal for y'all this is probably where the cleanest horn spell has ever been your mark get along real well and this thing but the fans are just enjoying the racing without the bad side of it and it's got to be a good feeling for you also I think it is I think Mark and I have got a lot of mutual racing respect for each other and we're both competitive races and we haven't remember each other skin so to speak for less than an hour just erased a lot together I knew out far I can go with and racing with him and he knows how far to go with me and we respect each other for that and we're doing you know it's an enjoyable Bible because they were compared everybody's race each other hard and yet we don't get to third paid advance good clean bam one of the unique things about the point championship this year is in the past there's always been those little verbal Barb's between the COO two or three guys were in for the points battle iron hearts been in those deals with Walters and stuff and here you and Dale are in a battle we can and we got you're the two guys that are setting up front mixing it up having two raced wide open trying to not only win the championship but win races and y'all been able to do it without a lot of hard feelings and you're still good friends and it's kind of unique to see that in a sport running this hard if you can go down to the wire one of you guys win a championship at the end without some hard feelings that's going to be a tree yeah like it's really going good on a racetrack Dale has always been fair with me on the racetrack I've seen the way he deals with certain situations and I don't put any situations that mean that I feel like good cause problems as long as you write del earthly relationship especially if you build up a pattern and we built the pattern and I see that I see some other guys that have trouble with every time that they get close to them and I see one and you know I'm going to try not to do that because you know we our deal is we're going for the championship and if it if it came to that we'd have to we have to get right in the middle of it and do it and we don't want that we want to race hard we want this thing to go down like it's going and be great for anybody for the sponsors the manufacturers the teams the fan this is the way it's supposed to be and I think it will continuously I don't I don't foresee any problems you're a darn good reporter bought it great interview there you see those guys there's the number three car in 19th position Earnhardt 20th right behind you Mark Martin remember Martin leading by 16 points over Earnhardt as we come to this bathroom up in front now as they come around completing 70 laps takes car is coming in front of the field looks like this Bill Elliott will bring the field down to the line leading there's a car just in front of him Bobby Hillin on the lead lap at tail end of it and then straighter is second Ernie Irvan party chef Brett Bodine ate Davey Allison night Harry Gant said Waltrip 11th Sterling Marlin is in 12th with Rick Wilson 13th there's the break well now we've got to make our adjustments on our racecars and maybe we can see what these things are going to do for the rest of the day there might get their first shot at trying to dollar car you see what the little drivers don't think I was earlier they've got that far riding a job of everybody else and those kids to get there as soon as that car right there are you surprised he's running [Music] you've never seen Elliot show that Hardiman to get tremendous comfort great comfort level in the car and that's what's this lead instructor what you can do what he fielded this mayoral race cars hood in the car avoid you're running a good place which is easy to do in space the risk without the hood court trying to keep up that's what it looks like right now as you see Bill Elliott in the number nine drawling away once again a car length the lap at the present time Schrader back there is a point five bar just behind Hillary there you see the free in the six find a weave their way through this project yep look at that man I think I Drive real hard to be a period that Lee's not have to be in that junk I mean everybody's going everywhere a lot of times you hear people say they're to for spell they're going to be conservative because that the Conservatives up in the middle that rather argue for the third about you but how do you do it I mean there's a car in every line I you see how in our judges and he gets knocked around a little out there the 41 car moving up into him lay leaders from out of Hartford South Carolina to top let me have smart mark mark me is he's right behind Earnhardt so he knows Earnhardt might hit but he just fought with fucose Earnhardt always makes Bruce I think I just say you would do martin using earnhardt for a dozer blade here as they cut through traffic here's the number three continuing michael waltrip that puts them 15th and 16th when the sixth car clears number 35 before we know realizing that he's got a horsepower absolutely oldest or Zeta most of the markets evolve generality 75 laps complete and with the amount of French remember there's a million dollar bonus and it's going to be decided between Earnhardt and the freemartin in the 64 those drivers keep their poise under the kind of pressure exerted getting bounced around out here at better than hundred seventy-five miles an hour straight right into the sport into these two individuals Elliott has Ronald you a 35 car way in a matter of about 12 laps you see Martinez Elliott in the minecart going down [Music] and he's just waving bye-bye to the rest of the field straighter back urban third quartile penny fit look at that interval John that's incredible well he is hooked up no doubt about it but like that they'll give it to her yet [Music] take now the funds come out a little bit peeking in and out so it does change track condition and at this part of the research facility or that little Ford folders for today I'll see you if you've got a lot of mechanical picture for long that's one thing we have a doctor who used to company's got an ear for traffic terrible I track these factories have went to work they built the board guys built lahia to avoid over sort that Chevrolet those wanted rid of the big dresses there's no such thing as early on rpm are pulled out torquing these guys to prove the power right where they will be this far right here is your fabric this is about a race car into this place let's go to the SCP pit Center and Mike joy Elias is the light combination can and that is tougher to find with bias-ply tires you slow up down side rear to get more stagger on the back of the car a very different situation with these radio it is like here you have a tire an inch and a quarter bigger you could inflate you could deflate we made it an inch and a quarter bigger so it got around the corner this is what happens with a radio five eight built into the tire nothing you can do about it you can put all the air in the world you can do away with all the air in the world this is what the car wants to do with [Music] [Music] right setup is so hard to find but Elliot's kind of nailed right now there's what you need Neal you need that crew chief Neal is up you're driving this race right beside us here and you need him down up here with you yeah what I'm not sure wish I have buried eyes of everybody needs two motors even there right there the radial thing this really got people scrambling and it's very sick people car boy air pressure with air pressure it does anything to start your cook factors like sprint later take a little bit it was back there to work with French stuff to help assist and make more let's talk to another crew chief right now far far too sandy - one of the best fellows Dale Earnhardt is out there fighting a very ill handling race car Richard Childress was calling in south to the bishop we able to get a family problem sorted out we don't know and had any good clear laps yet but yes Jay is saying a car we've been real tight off before over here in this [Music] what you're seeing a bill Elliott's up party thing you're to be able to deal with him for the day his son I know he's been awful thrown all week in France we know [Music] or make one thing perfectly clear in Richards late life calls all the shots but Kirk Kilmer dine is really the crew keeping calls all the time but he let Bridget in there because he's got all the money and he'll let him wear that yeah yeah richard has TV Kurt's overtime is demand here comes that number 9 car back in front by a building an even greater margin as we watch the six car clearing Buddy Baker in the mighty that sixth car Martin in 14 third part just in front of him in Turkey Wilson 12th Darrell Waltrip is in 11th we're at 82 laps complete [Music] so Elliott draws away to three and a half seconds over second place Raider working laughs eighty-three here in the mellow yellow' 500 live on TBS [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] you for so essentially [Applause] [Music] give [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] unbelievable [Music] [Applause] looking off the back side of car number 26 Brett Bodine running in seventh is av Allison in the 28th and 8th and Harry Gant try to close up on him out there we've completed 87 laps were at the Charlotte Motor Speedway live on CBS the $700,000 mellow yellow' 500 that has Bill Elliott drawing away from the field he's at the entire field covered since the outset of the event and from the dick trickles car number 66 with that helmet camera on a camber actually on his helmet kind of rock and roll around this track Neal Bannen in there right there it's the fast way to go right into the bottom and wanted to like that but still that thing is pretty rough in there respect straightaway there's a crossover right there with a big bounce was in the middle race records across over for the campers on the back straightaway I think I now understand why racecar drivers neck has to be strong when you're on high bank racetrack see I swear in his neck out jerked it around so I see why these guys have to have big strong neck trickle in the 66 car running 17 here's the man of the hour Bill Elliott in car number dying plotting those red and white colors by now four and a half seconds over everybody else on the field thirty fourth win out the back of Brett board I give you another sense of the thanking you're on this mile and a half at Charlotte here we go up on the merry-go-round around turn wanted to it into the backside here are the lap leaders to date in the race what I Knopf the pole quickly than Ernie Urban took over but I thought they had a great craft in Elliott took over and from lap 68 on hey it's been all Bill Elliott hope to help you understand where we are in the race we've had that one caution when Jeff Lodi and got into the back of Jimmy means and spun it does anybody ever put anybody out to bring out a flag other folk in it I don't know you'll just told me you've done it for that hundred times in your career all I want to know what you've already paid it before that I know Jeff didn't do that on purpose just got together accidentally but I dunno 7 watts goes up in smoke for Wallace Jimmy make our now suing that cars very doctrine very more about that later but the moment here's the story the 27 car running is plenty of positions while it's backing out of it on the pit road the cause still under seem to be under power so this occasional animal very good when something like the motor still running plus we could fix for Miller Genuine Draft cars in in hot Strickland's number 12 as the 27 comes to stop there you see Strickland model 52 flipping on by the Raybestos car Bobby Allison goes back on the track the 27 car in unscheduled stop for Wallace and Barry Dotson let's get you into this story okay we're going to take the lost affairs is what it looked like I happened to be watching the car on the camera when it went to court they had the same problem early as week same problem to face have been Winston over here did we came back we played a red sticker about something just crossed up from time to time I'd say he's probably done Chris Akana vacuum there with the story Chris was a problem with car 27 Rusty Wallace isn't oily and they got to first find out where it is and then figure out how to fix it not easy there's a hot engine was right now everybody possible is over the wall working on it right now rusty is waiting impatiently the hood ISM and he saluted around Rustin right here so oil leak a number 27 that's the problem Neil's spare what they're doing is people don't realize the plumbing on these race cars that thing's probably guys running 50 Joyner foot all arms and it used to be quite a problem provided yeah it does Neal and we both know how brittle those fittings are feet the tire could come up a rock or anything and break one I see what you're doing right now Hera Lillian's making some rags to try to stop the leak wherever it might be so now going three laps down is Wallace and let's go to a report from our man in the stands mr. Pfister thank you very much can medical science from Charlotte left her husband at home today to come out watch a great race and your man's doing fine who are you pulling for mail Alan got a five-second leave can he hold it sure no problem now do you like coming up in the races by yourself sure anything to pull for Bill Ellen mark that if you sleep aside there's other husband's there's a couple it will be getting straight in front of the second spot trying to find Bill Elliott who now again is that I've got a spinner coming down on a 4-1 car looping is going to may not even bring out a caution as the age of two comes to a halt mark storm out of San Diego California takes a wild 600-foot ride out of turn four gather stuff there's no caution and if you're just joining us thus far we have only had single caution on the day just one everybody on that racetrack except go quick wrister would like to be able to do a little bit of work there you see Wallace and the smoke still coming out what about it very Dotson as you watch the 27 year old car going down the backstretch and he bangs there well they strombel these things at the blade and it's a it's so competitive right now if you have any kind of problem at all it shows up and he's definitely got one it's not the bearing problem we talked about earlier but something 1988 winner of this event Rusty Wallace out of st. Louis who had very dachshund [Music] next year as this very here's the nine car now with a five and a half second please here's more bad news for the rest of the field can usually our timings fastest lap of the race come to the first two or three laps of the event Bill Elliott just flicked went off at thirty two point six six seconds our time X speed track of new stat to one hundred fifty five point three four miles an hour and that happened after the caution flag pit stop so not only a million chances car on the racetrack he's faster when he was when he started this event if that holds up as our fastest lap his whole crew will get time XP track computer at the 1989 Winston come here Rusty Wallace is back on pit road another time I think that might well be the knockout punch for 27 Wallace this afternoon he'll try to get him back out there and score some points but for the moment it's a long hard day at Charlotte or st. Louis Missouri zoasty Wallace over a hundred thousand people on their full feet watching Bill Elliott leaves [Music] okay we got two here in front of got a car crashing right in front of us Jimmy means head-on with Chad little Jimmy Spencer I'm sorry Jimmy Spencer [Music] Spencer offensive board got a whole spread [Music] Jimmy Spencer's getting out of 50 70s okay I would say [Music] probably litigation backhoe line our girl is so gorgeous right if you get a chance I can do a thing on that new safety vehicle too okay got the air force card there second caution today is just out as they came to the 100 lap mark of the 334 making the distance of 500 miles on this racetrack it's trial of North Carolina Bill Elliott was in the lead the incident that has put the number 57 Spencer Carr and Chad littles car out of commission happened up and turn four we're picking it up a little after it happened they go I have to see the 57 car come on before got a little sideways he looped it don't wear for Chad little going just really brought in the front car got loose played a little swish left and right in a head straight back across track with time Chad little got their Richard Petty number 43 dodging the bullet another angle here we see the top of the frame up here that cars already sideways again he backs it in the wall pans against well the same time Chad Lowe gets there looked like the rear broke loose on the 57 car coming off of turn four got a little bit away from it down to a Chrissy Connor of a key with Chad little all right Chad you okay oh yeah I'm fine Chris thinks just it's a shame you know we were I thought were running pretty good today and Jimmy got a little sideways coming out of four in lost it and then um know where I could go you know he's completely sideways in the track and uh I started to go low and then he stayed in the groove and I figured he was gonna start swinging up high and yeah the cars really tardive it must have been quite a hit there's nothing like Richmond about a month ago though has for sure well you're in good shape for your I have to - shame because the bullseye car and hi Sonali Farms car was running really good wedding better luck next time Thank You Chad little out of it okay Spokane Washington's Chad little walks away from the second wreck in a row that we've seen here on TBS that first one in Richmond a hard lick in the wall to Richmond International Raceway and today head on into Berwick Pennsylvania Jamie Spencer coming out of turn four here in Charlotte it's become a tradition on our TBS Sports coverage of Motorsports to shine the spotlight on a member of the racing fraternity with our US air force reserve commanders performance award in an incident on pit road involving ernie irvan's number four and i believe the three car was also in this bob barker is right there right in front of me Ken Ernie Urbana the number four came down the pit lane son I don't know whether he was hit or not but he spun right into Dale Earnhardt's car which was still upon the jacks getting serviced fortunately none of the crewmen with their backs for the oncoming car Dale's car took a look at the right rear corner no one else involved Ervin's cars parked at the pit exit everybody else is out but I wouldn't be surprised we got Dale Earnhardt back in here his crews going to want to see what's the matter with his car now Bob Barcia I have to see that getting Ellen quick II was coming down pit road he's leaving his pit area the four car came out quick he got together did shot the four over into there you were at but they touched the quickie car in this car here got to go their own pit road okay well I'm going to stay down here in the Earnhardt pit vehicle gordon has got the Billboard out there they're going to bring Dale back in and take a close look at the car here he comes now ernie irvan's car had been up in third spot there's Earnhardt's number three and they're checking that car back to Varsha they bring the car back up it was on the right side Jack I cannot believe the car didn't come off the jack when it was wrapped richard childress is there with Kirk's jailbird I'm Jack van David Smith the rest of the crew looking at that right rear corner what a blow this could be to Dale Earnhardt recall a year ago in this race he was the first man to drop out finished 42nd and an essentially cost him a shot at a fourth Winston Cup championship that went to Rusty Wallace fourth and right now he's got to be sitting behind a wheel that car thing what have I got to do to get something out of this 500-mile race in Charlotte the crew is not in any obvious hurry and that is always bad news you guys might have a better look at it from up there Bob from this side it looks like sheet metal of the tire that came over the car didn't look like it sustained a real big lick it looks like it gave the sheet metal in on the car maybe that's the only problems loans it took a blow the rear housing you should be ok I think that's the key thing if it did not knock career in housing sideways a few inches or so I think you'll see you escape but you can see how the other car is torn up in that car hit Earnhardt you can see how that car is destroyed well that think of our hearts is known to dude what the hell below they know taking it but then they took a pretty good shot right there alright we stay under caution with now 105 laps complete let's go to the fifth Center Mike joy is standing by with a good year racing update Thank You Kenny lots of weekend action to cover yesterday here at Charlotte the past is 40 of 100 entries squared off in the sportsman 100 the only half of them we're running at the finish of that event let's have a look at it here on the start Robby Fagor goes to an early lead but crashes like this one eliminated nearly half the field Maggert led the first half of the event seven cars out in this wreck there Swaggart moving up through the pack in number four he and Dennis Setzer rather in for each led about half the race 75 Robert Huffman waited to the last lap to make his move he came home with the victory Setzer hung on for second Jerry Knowles took third up at Nazareth Pennsylvania Rick Mears won the Indy car Marlboro challenge and the quarter million dollars that went with him Bobby Ray Holland mirrors have the front row for today's IndyCar race if you can't get it up racing in a day go to Road Atlanta where practice is underway for the FCC a national championship run off next weekend they'll run 27 feature event races to decide the National Amateur champ that's it for this good you're racing update here you see the Ernie Irvan car coming in on the hook the California native who has scored one wind out of risk all Tennessee and was running so well early in the going getting bunted and then spun on pit road into Dale Earnhardt's number three and as the wrecker brings him back other cars are taking advantage of this opportunity to do additional work Richard Petty again is on pit road as his Jack Pennington rest of the field is out and will see Bill Elliott in front trader in second Kyle Petty in third Brett Bodine fourth Morgan Shepherd in Fitz when the race resumes Earnhardt is making another pit stop in number three as work continues on his car Jenny stop don't ever what he's been doing is going on catching up the rear that coming over left and I think they've got the car pretty well under control they're just going to take a little small Bend right now if there's been a major problem with our housing or the rear panic bar or something they have been couple of jack stands and working on it but looks like you're just trying to make sure there's no metal flying where they get blackleg after the restart so there you see the work continuing and you see the anguish historical look of Dale Earnhardt one great thing about Earnhardt you cannot tell if you having a bad day or a good day the look stays pretty much the same baby's new yeah he's all business way set since Edelen think you know if they get it straight that hippy are well here comes the field by and the three car slips back out so it does not go a lap down they're clearing pit road safety crews still working out there as we continue to look back to the field as to how they were all running we came to this incident 107 laps have now been complete of 334 the 44 car is taking a pit stop here Jimmy Horton in the Box Ilyas car still Elliott is playing the role of the Dominator today here in the mellah yellow 500 can he keep it up [Music] fail for the entrance up nothing about once again comments where's the three-car in the on newest 20th on the tail in the lead left last car pace car is coming in they're about to go green again at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with 108 of 334 laps complete Elliott bringing the field down with Schrader second Kyle Petty third Brett Bodine Ford Morgan Shepherd fifth as they come to the stripe Dale Earnhardt in the number three car is running 20th on the tail end of the lead lap the mind Alan Kulwicki in 19th as they bust loose and ere you see immediately Elliott jumping out to a three or four car lengths advantages dr. - and down the back straightaway Raiders days second [Music] behind those leaders [Music] let's go to a critic Anunnaki who was in her heart okay a lot of time confusion therefore pitstop how's the car now think not damaged too badly it's punctured the right rear required we had to replace that again and do little sheetmetal work I don't think it's been three render experience period some of those last shop he said was just fooling around trying to get it right from stand by that wasn't correction to damage it was making the car better right we have some time to try to straighten things out Institute so we you okay thank you very much to pump it up it rode the bus park in the garage area well mechanics was hard at work on ernie irvan's car trying to get him back in the rain Ernie what happened let's exchange Kodak film duck our image Chevrolet was running off a good day and the other car that could not run us on a racetrack before in front of path to down pit road he got into grass when he did that he got loose lid over the top of me and knocked me down into Dale and fortunately no but nobody in the fifth got hurt I don't know how but uh people to handle this definitely based on what you see right now you're going to be able to get back out before we get back out no we said your father was run to the top five all day and now we're gonna have to ride around Bernier when going laps down you can sense this frustration one of those cars involved was Alan Kulwicki in the 19th position and is in the leave I'll try to poke you fighting with like trying to do it again right now for the first time this afternoon someone making a dent the car number nine straighter and the hand Rick Chevrolet is closing on the board yeah that's exactly what I was the first time all day long we weren't even any the pace that he has it might be that Phil is run at the same place traitor click their Facebook all day well I think you're absolutely right Neil but bill Elliott's going to take care of his car all but he's already found out you know we're going to have cautions things like that so it simple oh we got better Horner mark in the wall up and turn for something broke I think he caught a tire the way that mean they have been tagged but he has slapped the wall and their lives number three in the center of the track the pre time Winston Cup champion in big trouble gents are fired and have got to bring it on by by in forgiving a standing ovation you just can't beat that man down he just keeps coming back you just keep coming back get the lip rear cave there now to make the right side so they've got their work cut out for he is still only slammed so if he can get around and get this thing to you able to stay on the lead lap so there is the third caution of the day it comes for Earnhardt in the number three as he was pressing out of the back of the field let's take a look at what happened to Earnhardt will get picked a shot up he's already sideways luckily right there the other we just barely got best we get him that left front that would have been the end of when hit those front wheels you know it didn't look like anyone was right in front of him maybe he cut a tire down again you know Kurt shell merdeen said earlier that when he went around they put a new town and he cut it down and had to come back in maybe there's something underneath that car that cut a tire down would you cut the Superspeedway like this the fender clearance is everything a real real close for the high speed runs we do and when you lose something over a little bit it can't start over and we see the right front that's destroyed on the car but they can thing when you lock the wheels until it blows the tires a short distance on the track you makes be seen a million dollar dribbling through the fingers of this car number three team here after this later incident in turn four we'll be back for more involving [Music] [Applause] [Music] will fell off what number three and a tires rolling to turn one the tire is still rolling down through turns one and two friends in the grass and pull the lift on so we didn't get a chance tighten the lug well dick they did a two-tire or right side it probably somebody took the lift off they didn't know it it's a standard deal or pitstop pull your left side off with the right they just put the right back over that's the left all see both lifts were left off it's going to be about three or four left's at this house the rail have to pick him up so you can't pick up either in because both ends like this of the wheel will probably take a rollback to get it and you're coming to me then until you do it on on this monitor okay and Fred I can be out of it you're codependent I go to bury him and they'll go to bury [Music] misfortunes started in turn four it's just been compounded in turn one left side tires lug nuts not tightened up and they've come off number three car Earnhardt lies at the bottom of the first turn Dale a rather kneel from a driver's standpoint tell us about how this thing feels it's normal procedure to pull lifts we've got very doctors better let's let him tell you what happens with a pit stop like this you know everything is hectic meal the same thing happened to us in 87 here Oklahoma's 500 we called it one pit away Michael Waltrip screw put the lug nuts back on as you said earlier defenders are real tight on the Speedway maybe they thought they could make you back around they were concerned about getting lapped and it caught up with them there you see it again it's certainly not the first time has happened Asbury sets happened to them it's it's happened with a lot of major teams the guy pulls the left side off you don't get the lug nuts back only drop the key to the driver is when the jack goes as you leave it isn't when we got in trouble with it we had just put a guy on the left side and it was my mistake I called two tires forgetting that my little brother was over there it happened and it'll happen again well here you see the children's crew coming out with two tires but already they brought a service truck to pick him up what's the rules here gentlemen that's going to be the question will they let us put on a barrack and these guys take these things down here and put them owner there's a better tour to bring it back to the bids I'll tell you what that's going to be a touchy situation all the pit work is supposed to be done in the pit with a championship on the line this will be interesting Neal you pointed out earlier that they couldn't pull it in with a record that has to pull it with the flatbed why is that well we've got to tire off each unit the race car if they pick it up with a front they drag the fuel sale if they pick it up to the rear they pull the front suspension out from under the car the only choice is to drag that thing up or that flat back flat bits off record the problem is going to be a lot of car to storage what they do that Chris is with Richard Childress a record tough break what exactly happened well the car was jumping around after rear houses got knocked out plenty of air and he jumped out from under and coming here and was going to take you know change all four tires and he seen you know he just wanted to take off at that time you know we just had a miscommunication right there and took off we had two left sides loose we just have to make the best out of a bad day right how long is going to take the fix we don't know you know we got to get the car back initially what we've got to do a lot a lot of work on it up there is no huh we're just wanting to try to get it fixed we don't tear it up loading it on the trailer okay tough break car owner Richard Childress Dale Earnhardt owner unfortunately a potential million-dollar miscommunication the other day here at the the it bill they had a big press conference between market daily and they posted there's no rebound tire this late in the season four races to go something like this can really be a bad stroke for the championship you know if you got eight or ten races left you might be able to overcome something like this they got a lot of work ahead up now and this was me this was mean like a 90 point lead for Mark Martin if this finishing position stays like it is you're at Charlotte Motor Speedway where they start 40 something race cars if you're at a Wilkesboro where it's a 28 car field in your last year 28 here you can see in the 40 numbers and the points really go down Charlotte is not only a good place to win it's a bad place to have a look well the last time something like this happened with such calamitous results wasn't it David Pearson and the Wood Brothers who had miscommunication in Darlington the left side came off the car it ended up with David leading the ride and Neil weren't you the fella that stepped into that seat yeah but it's such a touchy situation on the driver standpoint you know the crew guys just like Richard said he lifts up man jumped over took the tires off in a hectic situation don't tell driver wait a minute wait a minute the key always for the driver Jack goes down you leave and they'll both they were doing the rides only and they got it fired off now maybe maybe get it back around or they got a lot of work with there to get it worse mobile hello while they gentlemen just this morning Dale Earnhardt was quoted as saying I want to race Mark Martin for the championship we don't want this to be decided by a crash or getting collected by somebody else or having something go wrong in the pit little did he know that today that's exactly what would happen and hopefully it won't cost him the championship we just got a big roar from the crowd Dale Earnhardt must be still out there fighting them he's coming back on the track Barb and Chris Akata Mackey is standing by with Jack Roush I'm with Jack Roush Mark Martin's car on our principle strategist Jack with this tough luck that's befallen your archrival are you changing your race strategy oh no we want to try to win this race in quite a couple folders out leave Thunderbird up Burt we've got a lot of adjustment left of the far and it's responding to the changes we've made so far we had to go way back in order to get right there race' pretty much gone as we'd expected we really feel bad about the three-car falling out that's not the way we want to race for the championship I do hear it from number six power jack routed through sportsman earnhardt down four laps as he comes back in we're still waiting for word from nascar about this working on the car down here in the first turn there you see the number six car and that is Mark Martin's Ford now running in 11th position in my opinion I don't see how they could penalize them for going down just to put tires on a car to get it back around but we didn't pick up the speed to get around even if they do penalize them it's almost worth the penalty because the car reverse would be destroyed just dragging it up on the record so it's going to be a judgment call and it might be one of those calls that even though you're penalized it's still a better end result well let's see what happens or one lap away from taking green with 122 laps complete as you watch the Earnhardt car now falling five laps down Elliott leaves Raiders second brett bodine third in these unusual circumstances at Charlotte North Carolina which very well could decide the Winston Cup title and the million dollar bonus for 1990 you see the drivers that have won that Winston Cup title and the mellow you love 500 the same year petty back in 75 remember all those years he was here in 1960 and finished second wait until 75 to finally win it and then went on to take the title one of seven that he earned I'll tell you know early in the week I said I talked about these guys and both up sincerely meant that they'd like to win or lose the championship on the racetrack the way the seasons with we the two guys it doesn't even decide with something like isn't it when usually jack roush they'd be hated to see it happened you can believe that Jack Roush is a racer he wants to beat up on the racetrack not with a three car so there Peter another thing you could see the distress and ernie irvan's face because he is the car that hit it and started all these problems and it hurt ernie to see sail that way well they're putting the caution out for still another lap amid all the excitement amid all the pressure all the Gaiety this weekend is here at Charlotte there's also sorrow after the tragedy of last Sunday involving Robbie Moreau so we'd like to take this moment to say a final goodbye Robert James Moroso ran a solid race last Sunday at North Wilkesboro finished 21st hours later he was killed in a traffic accident two miles from his North Carolina home he had just turned 22 in a recent interview Rob contemplated what his future might well be and so when I think about my future you know I want to be the best and I feel I can be and I think what when I get to that point if I do I'll feel bad like I do now so it's hard to believe that it's happening Rob Moroso a tragic story of what might have been he succeeded in everything he tried as a high school student Rob did his homework in the lunch hour so he could work on his cars after school at 16 the minimum age for a NASCAR license he graduated to the charlotte daytona dash series and he won two races in his rookie year next it was NASCAR's Busch grand national in that series he was the only person ever to win three consecutive events here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway his defending race winner you'll find Rob burrows picture on every grand national ticket Moroso claimed four victories and twelve top-10 finishes last year at age 21 he became the youngest Grand National Champion in the sports history this year backed by his father's support he was a runaway leader in the Winston Cup rookie standing [Music] Thursday Rob's family friends and peers said their last goodbyes at a memorial service here with the Charlotte Motor Speedway he is well remembered Robbie Moroso will be missed well if Robbie Moroso was here his key thing would be hey remember me good remember the good things let's go race we're back to racing we're under green just a lap with 124 Bill Elliott is putting car number three Earnhardt another lap down with Elliott comes his major challenger it is straighter in the 25 the defending champion in this event traitor moving into challenge Bill Elliott Ford versus Chevy for the lead but the championship story of 1990 may have been told right here in the last several minutes on miscommunication for the Dale Earnhardt 4 to Childress combination and they have been bulletproof on that kind of thing [Music] well the fun part of the thing here we now have a rate cut Reiter has picked up the pace and he's able to keep up with Elliot seems to be gaining on him because some of that advantage might be going away and we might be getting into contracted here the last caution flag we saw straighter bidder his race car this type of baits for change isn't it he picked up the piece even in just being to see if he could stay there after a long run behind this pair running in third is Brett Bodine he sat on the pole and we started this race at an average speed of over 170 [Music] wind came earlier this season on the Winston Cup circuit Morgan Shepherd has brought himself from thirty third in the bud more car up into fourth position and Kyle Petty his fifth Walter fly six Jeff bodean seventh Harry gap is now in eighth place while Davey Allison is ninth and derrike cope is up to ten Dick Trickle is in 11 he's a to pick the pace up the spider cars either picked it up or bill paste itself but they look like bill has one consistent time point I don't think he would change that I believe there may be straighter can sandwich when he did kneel on our watch and that last green flag run he was a very consistent thirty two point twenty five one hundred sixty seven point four miles per hour they made that car better yet last lap just before Schrader began to move up on him Elliott came across at thirty two point O seven second one hundred sixty eight point three eight miles per hour on the timex speed track it computes it automatically and that is fast to me Elliott I'm amazed that car just gets quicker every missed up I joined some of the things are it if Schrader has picked his pace up maybe early seen what that letter did we could possibly have been paid for that course hard to believe he could make the speedy we do it but he's picking up speed like it now tweeters put a little heat on him he's got something live ken Schrader in the Kodiak Chevrolet and the number six car the points leader puts a lap on Dale Earnhardt the second placement out in turns one and two now it's seven laps down being reported on car number three Earnhardt and there are a total of 19 cars remaining in the lead lap take the long way he tried oh Dale earnheardt off but it makes the odds a lot longer [Music] take a look at this here's Martin Shepard number 15 the red and white car the Ford running just in front of Kyle Petty the number 42 and closing is Walter Walter qualified 2050 mate one such bar in the way we completed three caution periods here comes water once again behind Waltrip is Jeff bodean in the number 11 thought when I say in the middle he is a bit yeah [Music] leaving the body sorry and spent the money they're going to make that one of the best teams in Winston Cup racing it already is right on the verge [Music] Morgan the first person was right at the middle of appointment flat for storage of always went well at the place where he might not put up big numbers qualifier he's always got a good race competition for this track he looked well they put had been his lone forged on this Morgan Shepherd who is one here in Grand National races is challenged by Kyle Petty another time [Applause] [Music] here's petit in the 42 down on the bottom or fourth further back take a look at this scramble it's going on there's the number 10 car and just barely in front of him is Ricky Rudd's number 5 Rudd is running in tenth derrike cope in the 10 card 11th and back side-by-side 42 to the inside Kyle Petty trying to take fourth and making the hole while strip stays right in there as well fourth fifth and six located 40 oil terminal and laughing 135 Waltrip in the film Eliot stays first traitor save same between those two actually works in Elliott's favor by an extra ten car links at the moment see what happens [Music] excellent job in place run well in the lead lap which multi-and go huh Schrader is backed up yeah way back though [Music] retired away out here Davey Allison is running well - he's quietly coming to the front straight to say like about if we have any trouble or for take the benches maybe we'll get away with that front yard [Music] it must arrest of emotion [Music] [Music] that's got away [Music] [Music] at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Bill Elliott continues to try and extend his lead let's see how the complexion of this race thus far has affected the Winston Cup point standings Mark Martin came here just 16 points ahead of Dale Earnhardt Earnhardt now multiple laps down as a result of that pit lane incident and losing the two left side tires off his car Bill Elliott has a chance to gain some ground on Geoff Bodine and Rusty Wallace despite that smoking engine and a lot of problems came in here 220 points ahead of sixth place Kyle Petty so there should be no change passed the top five but that Earnhardt Martin battle may balloon big as a result of the pit road incident let's go back to Ken Squier Johnny Hayes in Tijuana two and a half seconds Mike separation between first and second near second place with Brett Bodine straighter who was there has fallen back to third if the position is piled any further back here's the dandy battle developing they can look at number 66 Dick Trickle running cloth Rick Wilson of the 75 13th and Mark Martin running 14th on car six remember Mark Martin needs to get a good penny he has not had a dominant car year I don't know if he's just riding they're saving it but this is where he needs to get that pop-by opinion so he can really spread the interval between himself and Earnhardt 141 of 344 laps complete [Music] marking to the inside on Wilson [Music] just talking [Music] he does have a handling problem [Music] they were concerned with winning this race Leo's out of it for his horse home we got a car with sideways Sterling Marlin with sideways and from the field coming out of turn four he's picked it up and continues and grunting very slowly we saw 21 in another time count Wallace out on this one still have 19 cars in the lead lap and sterling Marlins machine 20 or just back up about five spot here's that battle circle drops to 13 roost there he had the tail-end all just behind Mark Martin in six michael waltrip has told himself up to 15th place he qualified 36 today and look at michael waltrip in the 30 making his run on car number six Marty you would wonder about Martin running that far back [Music] here's a great call you can get be him please number two Brown car do you like and he's filling in for dick Moroso and is driving the heck out of that race car he did the lead lap is past a bunch of cars and has now run this whole group of cars down so he's really got that car hooked up and just behind this six car John is the Hensley effort today in the Robby morolto number 20 and he is putting on a great race there you see him in car number 20 Jimmy Hensley started in the 23rd spot and he has locked that car along very nicely as we come towards 145 laps this time and his name shown in the lead lap maintaining 16th position you were talking earlier about art you know we want to be that far back there you know the further back you are the more cancer or something happening product.you so I'm sure that they pick the place of us or to do that Brett thought I in the Quaker State car looking from second place up through the field as he comes down this main straightaway or this capacity house every sequence main grandstand sold out is the one without the helmet camera because you can see the picture he's nice move the car look like it's driving real well swapna positions your Schrader has gone back into second benign finds himself third Kyle Petty fourth is that battle can see SOT over the past 10 or 15 laps and for the moment now Schrader just drives away and he's about to put another lap on the hapless Dale Earnhardt I don't think he'll like that if us talking about closing a door stretched it back out there Lucky's the cable that all day long he's got the second place bills really working on we know it Bill Elliott birthday this week you know so he may got his mother year birthday another big birthday Lula Rosa has a birthday this week all have got a bunch of birthday boys around here we ask Kenny Schrader's number 25 how long is Rick Hendrick's patience when it comes to his Winston Cup teams I don't know we haven't really tested their I haven't looked at the rippy and see how long his patience left we've had a good relationship and we've thrown away a lot of cars in last couple years Bunton where my fault now that's up pretty quick when I get out of with a my fault but you know they put you in there to try to go fast there once while you go fast but you don't do it right you lose the car but the support asleep you know I don't danger of getting sent down the road yet sure hope not one so I mean I think as long as you know he hires the people that he has confidence in and as long as you're doing your job he feels your and you've got that team attitude and I think you're half right a flip-flop are true can I check with jack roush Mark Martin's car owner about that loosest problem recorded they're waiting on a pit stop to work on the car because the problem is when Marcus another car up behind him it gets that back-end and makes the car loose when he got his own says browse he can go as fast as you want to while for the moment I don't think he's going as fast as he wants to here you see Hensley in the 20 car moving around it back in second place straighter getting some pressure from Kyle Teddy's Pontiac Ford and first Chevy's second Pontiac third and at number 42 Pontiac is making the move well you'd expect freedom to be among our true value hard charger employee was that and primary affiliates led the most laps he gets five points for each one of those the traitor history class that he's running second at a hundred laps Eliot 468 trader 276 head Ernie Irvan who's now the garage Geoff Bodine and Davey Allison all getting true value hard charger points as they pile up all today we're now 11 laps away from the halfway distance and a $10,000 bonus in the race this looks to be very much in Elliott's pocket and that smoker continues to be Wallace he stays out here now several laps down and they keep bringing him and he keeps working on the car but it's not going his way for a formal winner of this event you know this part they're good to have to call Barry Judson and we're talking about the six car when someone gets behind it so we do a lot of it just very were quickly the best thing with someone's right behind the car to correct a problem what they'll do Neal as you well know when they come to end up beat the rear spoiler up that would get the car low downforce especially when it turns entering the corner and if the car is pretty good as far as which they may take a little wedge four up to get it nailed down or cousin or take you kyle petty the inside run went straighter back to third kyle petty now goes to second place warner winner of the 600 year kyle petty on a roll in the second spot and we're ten away from the halfway distance there's Davey Allison's number 28 he's trying to stay with darrell waltrip bike and with Morgan Shepherd Davey Allison's number 28 for the Robert Yates machine into the back straightaway behind him is Morgan Shepherd here is Waltrip beginning to tear he moves around Waltrip moving in getting by number 11 beau dying and he gets himself to seventh place ready to go after Shepherd of the 15 this is Darrell Waltrip number 17 now the seventh place Jeff would ID and eight my sister has a story boys there's a lot of celebrities Ken who have their own successful line of clothing and some of them had clearly don't this is Michael bison from Ohio and he's put together I think probably one of the nicest Darrell Waltrip alphas I've ever seen in my life I want to take his put this thing together I wrapped created every year I started out when he first got the tag car well this looks gorgeous you got a little car moving around up here Darrell's even Vesta and to show us what time it is real quick been o'clock well that's a beautiful outfit I thought we'll be cleaning in the mall right for me accents understand man mark with us I got that scar on top as his experience like here is the 17 dropping down for a moment to the bottom and you see with you right no I am merrily the spin cycle isn't working to all of 17 right now he drops another spot Waltrip back to ninth and Harry Gant is closing on him the 82 winner of the event again he said when he wanted in 1982 it was just like Christmas it's like he's trying to wring some more bells today remember he's qualified second started dead last ever he lost his car day ago on pit road comes Terry the Bobby's car number one which is the one in 19th position the tail end of the lead lap 157 laps complete this time buyed has been the Bill Elliott story all day here at Charlotte [Music] that one this is over the key right what I didn't say anything thank you [Music] read out the I can't call Barry one over I can use talkback I don't have it on the spare with the network okay [Music] Hockman favor city started in officially how far we can raise your kids sighs yeah it's very daunting how far we're on regular stuff the I just felt Darryl came in come in I don't know if it's regular wood I lost track on that last caution with the problem a day oh really no we're not getting lapped number two so got hurt we'll put might 160 [Music] promotional fees and consideration have been paid by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company makers tough motor oil fill ally has been on a tear here at Charlotte Motor Speedway for half 1951 the Winston million no Ernie Irvan clicked off a lap at 167 point 7 800 miles per hour quickest on our time XP track has been Bill Elliott 168 point four zero as he continues to extend that lead little later on ken Squier will have our Goodyear pit race recap soon as those stats are available right now let's go back to live action we are five laps away we were premature by five five laps away from halfway and the interval between first and second Mike is now three and seven sent to the second is Sterling Marlin the young man who won his first Grand National race yesterday the All Pro Auto Parts 300 is getting laps early Marling's going down one too far number nine that leaves us with 17 cars in the lead lap Darryl Waltrip has just pitted I think that was a little out of sync John yes Terry Labonte also I think those cars had to come in early because they had trouble the Rusty Wallace has the critical metro and he's behind the wall running on the pit road a car jack Penningtons number 41 is fitting the number 90 going on another lap down Rick mast driving for Travis Carter here at the end of the season as they go into turn number one lot of changes there for Rick mast them doubt with a new team a year from now excited about and poor Dale Earnhardt from number three it's mowed down but Bill Elliott another time has to be hard to be just riding out there now just trying to grind out the point and when you go out there with one of these cars prepared at its best you got the vehicle this is Olaf he might be running slow but he's running as hard as I Carl go right now and that's a terrible feeling if we sit there especially watch they've got his flower rental bike on the attrition for today's race taking a look at attrition on today's part we can pretty much we have three cars officially down and the 27 car they're trying to get it back in because it's just behind the wall it may be they'll try to roll it back up but for the moment it's gone to the garage area so call it four cars out of the 41 starters that have retired as we come to halfway in the event crater is coming down pit road third place car Schrader is on pit road second place at the moment is Kyle Petty it's about time for regular stops here God the Father just killed with suicide food tires again Bob arches there and recruiting crew goes to work on second place car Kenny Schrader's quick and pretty uneventful I got my free card spinning and crashing out of turn number four the 83 car was I believe the first car to go and he was almost caught that was Phil Parsons going around Chuck Bown was right there so with Phil Ilyas right in the middle of it and was able to get through it well there you see Chuck Bown who won six Grand National races this year and lead for the Grand National standing line in the graft he's able to get her fired Briggs are back on car number 97 and that's the colors you'll be carrying the Kellogg colors for 1991 the 83 parsons is also back out very Datsun this short comes at the right time for all of these crews are getting a little anxious about fuel and tires out here as we come to halfway and sure does a lot of cars needed adjustments the nine car stayed pretty consistent and I tell you what you got to keep your eye on Brett Bodine he's back there you take a look the end car camera he's real comfortable I got a feeling he might show up a little later on let's take a look and replay it turn for well coming off the corner here the car broke loose in the bottom lane you just lost the car I think loops around if you're watching to smoke this is going to be the time car come front through the middle the nine car going through with a car spinning on the outside of it go right through the middle think he's lucky here's Kyle Petty right down in the apron and the grass in the middle of the trial woman going across the yellow riding right there the first and second place cars barely got through the accident here's the way it looked at Elliott a lot of smoke right there he's totally blind he places Judge McCauley follows that car back to the right excellent job of driving or some help from somebody else but an order was here's Kyle Petty and he's just headed out for the for the grass or anywhere to get out of the way of anything that might be coming down off that asphalt that's what you need Toro is a sponsor that could help you at the grandstand Chris account of a key like a rocket vacancy when it's going to come back in again whether that trip to the lawn mother they want to remove we'll be back in a minute here's Kyle Petty making his 300th Winston Cup start here today winner of the 600 on this track back in 1987 love to again his fourth win in this event Pal is always always run well Charlotte ran its first race here practice year big time Winston Cup and he's always like this place feels like it's home to it the $10,000 bonus for half way is in the pocket of Bill Elliott and it came in a very dramatic fashion as we just saw more from Charlotte shortly [Music] [Music] [Music] teacher number yes can i daddy Conti the graphic one thing all and again cilantro [Music] [Music] and there's a partner [Music] mr. Spock Carol Waltrip is down a lap we're talking the pizza we're waiting for 17 we're about to go back to green first here's our Goodyear mid-race recap six lead changes among five drivers the three caution flags have slowed the average speed to 133 miles per hour 23 laps so far hundred caution very low attrition only three cars out of the race Ken Bill Elliott Hulse story thus far Brett Bodine sat on the pole good skirmish was frayed at the beginning and Elliott took over and motored away we're just completing the fourth caution of the day with Johnny Hayes alongside and Neil Bonnett we're top sight just past the halfway mark coming to 171 is they'll take green we'll get somebody else to take a shot I think they'll feel the fit out front all day long Schrader tried the 26 court right now Cowell was moving around the rest car then was in college and stay in the basic middle of it boarded first Pontiac second Buick third Chevrolet fourth as they come to the stripe in the belly of 500 live on CBS Eliot has led 145 of 171 lat let's see it's Kyle Petty in the number 42 can change those circumstances somebody get after pill he'll turn us to a leopard every time this picks up replace work that Timex watch one more time let's go to Chris economy and Kyle benefits okay we went Gary now from I already make that riding lawnmower and he totally damaged in the grass their cows had a grill food and so far you know first couple laps the car looks real good so we bet he didn't feel any bumps or anything he just had to avoid those cars of extending and he did a good job what about his ability to take down the leader well the car has been a little bit tight all day and we've been waiting for a long run to see if it will even out and it looks like the longer we run the closely gets Elliott we don't know whether to adjust it now you know later in the race where he'll be under loosen it up a little bit okay thank you Gary now it's a number 42 54-mile penny on how it's going Jimmy Carr has a very characteristic over France the glitter got started for the Elliott down a little bit right now to restore he's tied the 46 car brother or if they're going to make just like his head or either the car destroyed along brick would hit the road okay and once again the 9 car needs to do to everybody just drives off into the sunset here there goes the Datsun bill flash awesome bill from Dawsonville Georgia Italian just wheeling away from second place man Kyle Petty who has this mitt full of car number 26 Brett Bodine is back in that Buick knocking on the door for second place Mark's all going another lap down on the inside the high bow dine with Brett Bodine with Ricky Rudd in fourth and fifth is Jeff would hide in a junior Johnson number 11 sixes Morgan Shepherd seventh is gasps Nathan straighter and austenite is number 30 michael waltrip again we're having a pretty good raise of it right here if you dip the knife our Vietnam button to blossom brother look here we have the brother Bo Brett let's see if they would get together it's family let's see if the big brother let the little brother know hey I'm the race car driver I was here before you are here just follows little brothers Morgan Shepherd has moved into sixth position Kent Reiter has fallen the seven carry Gant is eight maybe Allison ninth Alan Kulwicki comes back to 11th spot with his so number five that's run running fit here's number 17 remember poor Walter Pharaoh's gotten blacked out got himself 19th position after that switch around on pit stop yeah Darrell had the bad luck of having to come in early and made the stop and maybe got laugh but look at this struggle going on for the sixth position Morgan Shepherd in the 15 and would them Ken Schrader in the 25 and here's the battle for second spot 42 Kyle Petty on the outside Brett Bodine tried to take him low and wood in comes Jeff Wood item number 11 and the bow dine brothers trim those cars right there nose to tail down the main straightaway let's see if Jeff goes with his brother or with Powell came in this traction situation I don't know feel like Ricky Rudd's going to jump on the outside and make it a good for way back [Music] there's the pictures from the Quaker State viewing Brett food I give it as the shot like we're a Wrestling Federation here the bowtie brothers tried to pin for Kyle Petty and car number 11 coming on the inside Jeff hood I'm working Ricky Rudd [Music] there's fourth spot for number 11 rut in fifth [Applause] over there that's a good exit out with that corner big long going in three-year these cars are really it's way down in the corner [Music] the first one is until we were concerned about the radio tired good years right on top of these like they're working good today [Music] here's Bill Elliott number nine continuing to draw away Jill Elias gives us his opinion of this Charlotte track when Charlotte's a difficult racetrack it's always hard to set up bar called one and two normally different reinforce three or four always change its place during the day you just got to give it your best shot hope you got it ride in this place is old change as much as any race race we go to throughout the day and that's the thing you have to work toward now it's running the lady empowered here for the first time we'll make nice different Oakland Elliott in front continuing to work his way over way on the rest of the field Kyle Petty and second and then it is Brett Bodine running in third 181 laps are complete [Music] the 10 car derrike cope twice the winner this year moving on Michael Waltrip and just getting around him derrike cope taking over in 11 Michael Waltrip falls into 12 like lines of Mark Martin the point leader there's that battle for second place heating up again Brett Bodine takes the Buick and barrels down the inside putting tile pennies Pontiac grip won a third chip load on turning down pit road the fourth plate clock number 11 Jeff go dine on pit road he's coming in slowly it's almost like the motor is off looking out the back of Breton Bodines car going under the hood with the number 11 to float on Kyle Petty's number 42 low angle shot and a fat one here for car number 11 the jr. Johnson team [Applause] forty-two Kyle Petty settles in for another run [Music] Bob Marsh is down there I am here they're looking down into the edges well and it appears that it's a drivetrain related problem they're rocking the car back and forth trying to find out what the problem is they're poking the block underneath the air cleaner it appears that I might have lost the spark plug have some now the distributor cap comes off evidently its electrical problem Declan I'm Chuck Bown his spot there is no caution out he is fun into the grass down here at the start/finish line on the playing field directly across from us and he's back under way Jocasta home is he also to his way off the Dragons liver the rear quarter of my side has to take Powell car Chuck fifties his first outing in this car as you can see when he's been at that tire smoke rubbing against the fender he'll have to come in and try and get new tires he'll take a couple of laps deficit here [Applause] second place our number 42 Kyle Petty for the mullet and Ken Schrader's that is for third place Kyle Petty in third ken Schrader in for record I to second Bill Elliott out in front this is the battle [Music] my joy at the SDV fit center with Rusty Wallace is out of this race when they finally find with your car really did something knock normally never breaks it broke all for a mob so this is nothing like you know to make a pass at a kid today when you had a chance to run with these guys in this read last year Elliot's car can anybody catch him and what is he filed that nobody else has today well I don't think anybody catch them right now basically what he's found is a good combination for a new radio car all the aggressive drivers child at myself been able to use before pretty well out the window now drive these tires straight you can't break them loose and bill found a route could set up we come back that's what we're gonna have to work on so the smooth guys like Elliott Brett Bodine Ricky Rudd this break may come to them it might come to them it looks that way it looks like I'm going to have to tame myself out and follow with a lot of others but the chassis setup I had to car was an awful tight set up - very very of it 57th back in that area but you know Jacque camera setting spring shot all that type of stuff a lot of judgment depending Winston Cup champion out Edwyn for Rusty Wallace and I hopes and they all went up in smoke we saw time after time bringing that car back on the track to no avail vodka [Music] like being preside greenly over Bill Elliott combination to this race like you have really stress or bed into a rocket today what's your secret we've been really good here last couple weeks know aligned over program is what I call a program we danced it up here you know he's very handsome markets are ran you know it's their finer place male you know he's out there to be a hopefully we can I you know harried everybody on my campus selim have a nice Drive here's Eliot staying in front and again the story is he drives away from feel just leave them out there watching Bobby Hamilton's car go back to the garage area and Hamilton's car will be the six retiree from the event Hamilton now out of it he has this report just in case you're hungry that's right and we all know as a basic for food groups are but when you come to a NASCAR event you just take that and throw it right out of the window because here the four basic food groups are grease fat starch and sugar and we found them all to one stand it's called the funnel cake stand what they do is they take this funnel as you can see them putting it in the grease right now they drop it in there and it fries it up they throw the sugar on top of it and it's just a beautiful tasty treat got a big one here for you and Johnny and a kneel up in the booth I think you guys will like this one a lot I don't think it'll make my diet at all I tell you what that is about the best-looking thing I've seen you final cake I first hand my first one a Pocono Pennsylvania and it was a magic moment for me and I follow the foam cake man around up cleaning for five pounds opinion that's the problem you saw car number 11 being rolled back Junior Johnson far the pork s for diet at the controls has gone back to the garage area he would be the seventh retiree from the event they can't bring it back out who pushed it back to the garage knocked over the larger Eliot stays first brett bodine second ken schrader third Kyle Petty fourth Ricky what's it maybe Alison is in six Morgan Shepherd 7:30 Gant eight Alan Kulwicki up to ninth derrike cope tenth with Michael Waltrip 11th running 24th in Richard Petty and Carter 443 194 laps are completed 334 that's the story at the present time Eliot first photon second Kyle Petty third grader fourth and Ricky rotten fish [Music] anybody want one one I'm sure what [Music] [Music] something that the ballpark is Paulo factor it said that three cars go by him in a road [Music] see something's wrong with it [Music] six dog yeah bad wrong you must have a tire going down either that has got odor because it's uh looks like a motor [Music] it's motor so he didn't come down pit road Earnhardt's throughout the kitchen and he's going to have to be so I did a few straight with that be happy while on archaically mark for a previous boss [Music] [Music] they learn art fans don't be despondent just yet there appears to be something happening remember if you're just joining us the Earnhardt is running seven laps down he had some major problems at the mid distance out the race got hit on pit road by Ernie Urban's five lost them last but now it appears that number six is backing up and backing up dramatically I don't know what happened the last couple laps is about three or four cars fill that part pretty easily looks like he's off the pace of the ear the destroyed way maybe someone could get into fits and if either what's wrong with it and remember we're just hathir it 199 of 334 to be run with three races left on the tour this year after they come here looking forward to Rockingham and Phoenix Arizona and Atlanta Georgia if Martin starts to back up into the clutches of Earnhardt down a few laps that race in the championship is not over however if he is able to stay up we have his work cut out with just three to go but here he is not running at the pace we saw earlier well as soon as we say that he picked the pace back up he was dropping back real slow and now he needs to be running with his cart it look like the office had some major problem because three cars went by me way behind every table stay right there with them Rick Wilson Dick Trickle and Dale Jarrett I'll just spit by him here's the 28 car Davey Allison underneath Ricky Rudd and taking fourth position at four to Davey Allison scoots down beneath the Chevrolet there's the Tullius number 44 down on the bottom of the racetrack to solder driving and to the outside here's trial Petty's number 42 trying to come back to life drop a sixth position in the fifth position goes tile in the 42 period else will told us earlier fifth that the car work better over the long run car with suit idle fresh tires I've got that long run going down he's coming just like you did before back up through the field I think we got to check in with very Dotson on something like that the expert on how those things loosen up tighten up during the race yeah we're getting down to if it goes green two more pit stops what they'll have to do if they get a caution to spree Kyle's car up he cannot afford to give up that much distance on restart hold the rest of the field up let Bill Elliott get away Barry what do you do besides council acts when the guy like Elliot is his duck and he is today and he just driving away from everyone I'd say what if he finishes it looks like he's going to win it you can make a few adjustment but he's just too strong it should be hard to be what's making the difference what's making the difference on the car that's leading the 40 to the 25 426 all of that I think rusty hit on a key point while ago Bill's driving style has a lot to do with it and these guys looks like a perfect chance to set up thanks to Mike Payne once we look here we see the 28 car Davey Allison in fourth then Kyle Petty in the fifth position number 42 running well down from that leader there is Elliott out in front there's one thing that there's some real nervous people on pit road and it's Bill Elliott screwed this is cute tiny drive away like that you just know you've got the race one if it if the car will land then you start wondering what will happen to that car Neal if you've gone through that with the Dover one big league we both get said slow down slow ever slower with I finally called back to commit slow rate points a fella can't slow down or we are motor broken tire chain I fell out of the race sometimes the easiest ones you got your bread something apparently over here you see Schrader in the 25 running second in the bottom of racetrack and you're pulling around him and going into second spot rater falls to third now we falls behind Davey Allison and he backs up another spot raters covered their pit road pit stop schedule perhaps wasn't a little out of sync anyway with the field we'll see Chris economy is there as number 25 defending champions of lol 5-under to crater on pit road this one has been under the hood from smoke melting out of the left hand across like an engine problem of some sort was BAM honking at it higher now the probable causes of hood integrated running up with the leaders most all day long now has got problems require the lifting of the hood to service the man is still looking get quite tell can he just it off and he takes the net down he'll be jumping out of the car maybe we can get a word with apparently the car is dunzo today a substrate for castrated chakras individual and republic penetrator the chevrolet didn't started in fourth the defending champion Schrader being rolled back to the garage area and he becomes the ninth retiree from the event on here's number six Mark Martin who's running in 15th what find out what's going on with that car Bob Archer and Steve mail the crew team manager I should say has talked to his man on the wild air part came to be flowing a little bit if you got a problem yeah I wish I could say we're just protecting our boy played with us man that's as good as we can do we've been real bad loose all week we're still real bad news with just half an implement got a ways to go yes the way feels right have we got he's running real - what's our Alice Championship is obviously a long way complete you bet he's running 15th you thought the tail end of the lead lap but he may fall out of that lap as Bill Elliott continues to just walk the field he pulled out to an eight second advantage at this time for the kidney trader situations the perfect example we just talked about having the best card here something happened it's not that happened to Billy we have ten different cars you can win this race both already the cars are pretty much committed fulfilling indeed he is there you see him and you see this big advantage that he filled up here he is just coming down across the start/finish line now let's go back to the second place where we've got a battle building between the Buick of Brentwood I'm the green to white party outside and Davey Allison scoops down the inside for second place so that makes Ford 1st and 2nd out here this afternoon Ford running water to Brett Bodine back in third Ricky Rudd in the fourth position there's the Votan car position seven the polar 174 miles an hour we're of young bowtie not the youngest was younger than Jeff [Music] in the feedback we get to the hits while ago that part was real loose when we saw the cars pull up behind him although old steady slow to let him buy we're going to lose conditions certainly know anybody on that back bumper it really complicates the problem so when somebody's behind it moves over let the father he grass there for a while he's a really smart race car drivers who he will not put that car in gibberish on purpose redwood I fix you down through here's the 42 cause it's running in third several car lengths behind 42 Kyle Petty then in fitness e Ricky Rudd remember that Waldrop is running one lap down in 16th position the number 5 car rut is in fifth Walter frigate really giving it a good run all day but we had a man look down tire here beneath the run we got a little bit loose there run Jeff back under him Darryl let him go by Darryl walk [Music] let's go to Chris Takata Mackie we're here in the garage area with a disappointing telling about the tracking curve and what should life well when you hit the bumps the wrong way and it takes you loose a little bit but I'll tell you what the tracks real slick let the Goodyear Rado doing a good job I really really like the way that felt for the first time here our car was a little too tight that's what had us a little bit slower but felt good nobody can touch bill right now I'm going to ask you to do what you can spray out there well yeah if we were too tight we hoped we could loosen up and get enough speed to get you but it was going to be a rolodexes right now he just plain old got everybody covered you weren't saving anything up well we I wasn't really saving anything so he's always just hard Yolo family get me even a stick with your decision to stay out of the open-wheel car except to actually have a roof on them I don't know it half a classic with a pretty good out there in Phoenix so we'll just have to say that pretty much we're going to fix okay Kenny crater out of the danger face back to the booth sixth place car number 15 Morgan Shepherd the but more car and behind him comes Harry Gant in number 33 has had a good run he had to go all the way to the rear Ian qualified second and broke his car yesterday here's the 15 in that six position and there you see the 33 car Gary Gant running just behind it there's gas again closing up and behind gas comes the the number 10 car in line actually the 8 car is in there Bobby Hillin who's running back in 17th spot one lap down there's Derek coke he is running eighth on the field behind this two-time winner this year is Alan Koh wiki's number seven the wiki would be next time you see the interval back to Co wiki running in night and right on his rear bumper first there is Michael Waltrip in tenth position the 30 car Michael Waltrip's Pontiac 10 and Jimmy Hensley driving for Robbie Moreau so today in car number 20 would be next back in the 11th position there's Hensley coming into your frame he's praised by Rick Wilson in 12 with the 75 machine there's the 20 of jimmy hensley doing an outstanding job and with him comes Rick Wilson in 12 so that's how the front of the field is deployed with 216 laps complete on 334 to be run this afternoon in the mellow yellow' 500 billion takes the role of Dominator in this event [Music] because of medals that one is grilling or about ladies pink [Music] what [Music] the camera will exhibit three film seconds real gotcha gotcha gotcha gotcha give me a second I got anything with my truck with you our battles over [Music] one two three four five six seven eight yeah there is something in Scrooge complete with [Music] make the car run hi okay [Music] [Music] I be mr. hot dog wrapper off [Music] promotional fees and consideration have been paid by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company makers of Goodyear Eagle high performance street radials the best-selling performance tires in the world and by first brands corporation makers of STP racing products and by the US air force reserve over the years we've saved thousands of lives so complete 221 laps are complete and Bill Elliott sleeve continues to build here in this race he puts a lap on Richard Petty and number 43 now being shown in twenty first two laps down look at that grill it looks like a piece of sheet metal very there's a piece of aluminum stuck on the grill of the car very dr. nathie very beautiful education editor there is no put overheat in the car I don't think so the Alissa piece of paper it appears to us and that boards got so much cooling in the front it will reflective it all this happen to a little fancy like coordinate but the qualifier here you got got him closed off [Music] mark mr. hot dog wrappers and bikini park sister find out where the epicurean scientists found himself recently mark Thank You Kenneth some of the nicest adjectives I've ever heard used about me in a long time we are back up in the Speedway club showing you the real four basic food groups and there you can real well up here you got your salad you got your potato salad carrots beans just real good food upstairs but I'm going to take you to my favorite part of the Speedway Club it's right on the other side follow me real quick and this is my favorite food group strawberry cheesecake now we're talking goodie I like it you're good man mark yeah I see I knew he wouldn't go here the window to life great he had right with the desserts there well mark was a historic over the place Rosen really for a spigot SIG's car is off the page just lost a cylinder just got a report pit road they just said you lost a cylinder Lord be the sports thing is crazy he'll be respected for second fourth wouldn't it be something if after all of this that engine goes up in smoke and guess who's still running out there Hillel is just getting great trying to put him a lap down watch this as they come around here is dill Elliott in the 9 pudding Mark Martin one lap down the key to this right here is what is broken is is a piece stay up with the bell cover a piece to stay in the galley with a liqueurs or not get better the lore Assembly of the Ancients and lock it up let's talk to the expert about that Barry Dotson what do you think he's got a nurse at home he has no choice he could run faster he doesn't need to do it they love pretty much close to 100 laps to go for the net he's just gotta finish is so important what do you tell the driver right now when you're the crew chief on pit road Barry make it easy don't abuse it watch the gauges let us know if anything changes it's a terrible feeling to be in a car like that but think you know you want to can finish if you want to run as fast as possible even though they're telling you the radio the fact that they snap if they walk a little bit harder did you self-destruct the crew chief has got to make you work with it here is the other problem earlier in the day where the wheels came off of Dale's car and were sent here with Mark Martin having a problem what else can happen that they blew fourth leaders remember he had spun earlier and crashed up in turn four he'd come in took on rubber miscommunication and a million dollars may have flown with that tire down off turn one but now the circumstance changes again and the man in trouble is the man he is challenging for first place for standings mark mark in the six but nobody is challenging this guy he's making it his own show to Bill Elliott show we kind of quiet around the pool hall in Dobson Ville Georgia this year it's about to change they've got the old fire siren all wild up by now ready to turn or loose if it keeps going the way it is thus far Krista cata vacuum right here with these male bees I understand you Marquardt's lost the cylinder if that's the case what to do to the speed of the car and how long can you stay out there I don't know we go to this lay off for a while try to run as long as we can got about 100 laps to go we like to think we should make it but no we just have no idea what's broken we're pretty sure whatever it is we can't fix we just want to ride around take it easy make sure we can finish the race as we had to erupt oh yeah he lifted a bunch yeah we're not running hard all of your clothes let's get this mess over with okay female Mark Martin shooting for the next camping they're having to take it easy and I think that's a perfect quote for him and how disappointed because they could have closed this thing out today or put Dale in deep trouble and now let's just get this mess over with and go over the next race 230 laps are now complete Alan Kulwicki is pitting and there you see Martin falling back into the clutches of others now he's gone a lap down Alan Kulwicki is rather a Mark Martin is one lap down and Alan Kulwicki is lost in front of him in that lap down quick he is running 14th Martin is falling to 15th and Darryl Waltrip is ready to challenge Martin and take that position away from him and put him back to 60 we have 13 cars running to leave lap as Bill Elliott is out in front and green flag pit stops are coming up here is Kyle Petty coming on pit row Morgan Shepherd coming in Bill Elliott continuing to lead Bobby Hillin pity it is a green flag pit stop situation with 231 laps down we'll be back with more of the mellow yellow' 500 problem Charlotte shortly already moved out again ordered by the University yes I am that yes I areas will pick up a second maybe a couple of things [Music] number two - checking at intervals there oh okay we need to know that for not easily [Music] now we got to find it most laps for buyers [Music] [Music] +6 most is slower slower right on a wide shot right to Michael main target at all later on pit road [Music] leader on pit road lap 235 Bill Elliott comes in leaders all taking this opportunity Martin has come in remember he has gone a lap down the leaders all coming in and the stop is made by Bill Elliott back underway dominating this race who has dominated it before we go back to 1966 Leroy Yarborough driving for John Cornyn Haddad led 301 laps that year this man Bill Elliott could break that record with the domination he showed here's Bob Marshall they'll learn how to bring the car in the crew has gone to work looks like it will be right-side tires now they come around the left side David Smith throws the jackdaws in the car remember the four-time world champion big room and they are really earning their money today has a gentleman still out there right between that of calvetti and Bill Elliott moment ago Felix the baddest cow petting car owners on the I of my team Bill Elliott fruity took the white handkerchief out of his pocket and waved it over him head then gave out a big laugh well course lawyer to give their saints like says Marcus head in trouble did they love food ounce or put a little bit harder see if they changed their strategy since their hello trouble they're gonna pick up the pace with their car [Music] that's a good story that perhaps they learn hard is putting more pressure on now it's running slaughter for a while he was just making time trying to stay out here and score whatever point he could from attrition but now he realizes that Martin is backing up [Music] 238 laughter completing after these pit stops under green guess what they'll be guests at all Bill Elliott continues to lead Davey Allison however is second Brett Bodine is third Kyle Petty is fourth Ricky rut fit Morgan Shepherd is six and Harry Gant is ascending has a a good year racing update got a spinner out turn number two believe that might be a Rick Wilson's car that's come to rest out there and auction is coming out right after this period that's the second type of thing that happened today right after they make these green flag stars we get a caution fly Eliot took four tires were most efficient here comes number seven [Music] caution of the afternoon the precaution of the day comes at lap 240 that'll put the field all back together with 13 cards showing in the lead lap Bill Elliott stays first Davey Allison second so it's Ford 1 & 2 a Buick of Brett Bodine 3rd and Kyle Petty's Pontiac is 4 it back once again under caution at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with 240 laps complete in the mellow yellow' 500 and let's get out of the pit center with Mike joy Kent that's good you're racing update we have Busch grand national and IndyCar racing yesterday is $400,000 all Pro Auto Parts 300 started by point standings but it didn't stay that way long Bobby Labonte in number 44 took an early lead but Dale Earnhardt swept up through the pack taking no prisoners with him and taking Bobby Hamilton and Dale Jarrett up along for the ride toward the front of the beam as we came to the halfway point there's Earnhardt getting against Steve Grissom recovered kept on charging then it was Sterling Marlin dad learn hard and go to the front and take the $25,000 halfway bonus then 15-minute halftime while the crews made adjustments when we came back Marlin and Dale Jarrett in 32 traded the lead back and forth close pursuit by Ward Burton up and comer in number 9 Cecil units blown engine that was the only caution in the second half Marlin as Greg sacks there at the wire by 12 car lengths to win it Jarrett was third Chuck Bown finished 13th but his pursuer and the point race Jimmy Hensley was a lap down bound extends his lead with just three races to go in the season on the cart IndyCar circuit Al Unser jr. sewed up the championship emerson fittipaldi won the grand prix at Nazareth Pennsylvania / Mears and ray Hall unser involved in a minor collision went to the hospital with a mild concussion but sewed up the Kart championship and finally today here at Charlotte Ford Motor Company honored Chris econo Mackey with a lifetime motorsports achievement award he'd already got to immortality he's got his own max race card happy birthday and congratulations Chris let's go back upstairs let's go alright - Chris economy you standing on his soapbox down there on pit road well I think that there's so much incentive laid about women and men sports I've got to say a few words on that water racing for years was a man's four till Tony Hulman the person he don't have a sport of always get off for the game Chris get off your soapbox right now women a number of years ago mr. Ferrell get off your soapbox women women are my compartment personal automobile racing these days Chris up yes there's a gentleman up here named France bill France wants you to get off that soapbox right now you something to tell you well you tell bill France said nobody's going to get me off bite so well he is right now this is important stuff okay I'll listen Chris on me I'm listening on behalf of all the NASCAR members from all over the United States we wish you a happy 70th birthday and you've been a great credit to this sport well that's very nice of you bill thank you very much but I'm not going to get off my cell phone obviously we're talking about about women in sport the locker room scandals and so forth and women there but automobile racing today it has very much a place for women our pit reporter yesterday best to Shack an extra woman i producer this show is patty wheeler a woman there's some fine women racing drivers patty police with the same game years ago Gannicus clearly won out a Laurie John and in the pits here that's probably as many women as there are men of the 41 cars it took the green flag today 21 of them are being scored by women and 20 by men I want to file a line for Maurice Chevalier thank heaven for little girl first on behalf of all the past our members we agree with you for the one of the first times in your history that women are welcome at NASCAR and go to school thank heaven for little girls but you can't get him off his soapbox bill is impossible he's a great man thanks for coming by for a moment just can't stop that economy once it gets on a roll let's get back to the race we're back under green another time here and as we do happy 70th birthday father economy on the backstretch Bill Elliott days purse Davey Allison in second Christopher decides he's going to deliver from his soapbox it could be the president it could be Bill France you're going to go straight ahead Hani oh he's hard to do what is the peace award in the third spot as we get back into the race Morgan Shepherd Harry Gant is in port Michael Waltrip 5th derrike cope is in 6 244 laps are complete about 90 to go because I just laid in third spot is so it's open look here he's 417 or third spot over the racetrack there all sorts of muscle there like the freshness of this pack yeah Darrell Waltrip running a lap down of the 17 trying to get back a lap here he's only showing one lap down but for the moment it is still Elliott dominating this race as we haven't seen it a carnival Dick Trickle quartered annual and Bobby Hillin getting hit the 66 car the Trop arctic car bouncing off the wall and then he collects Hillen in the 8th Helens car is directly below the start/finish line pointed in the wrong direction up toward turn number 4 and look at the side of that savage after that 160 miles per hour crash coming out of turn four the field is racing back to the lie number ranges pull right out across the start/finish line like triple got into the wall up the middle three or four came off the wall villain got into him he sendeth terrible place over racetrack black can really get you hurt he was lying down there against the wall here is the 66 car in trouble up there and that turn four which has been a critical part of the track nails Helen Helen had nowhere to go and dick just couldn't hold it against the wall he was trying to hold the car against the wall man just the steering probably broke on and just pushed right in front of traffic and you got to remember that Dick Trickle has an injured leg mediatek all hard he went across driver dr. bill crusher so he's he's to having a lot of trouble with there's the end car 245 laps complete when this incident took place showing 247 on they come by this time this car right here is the one that had the hit gamble the hill but that that thing was running with his happens you go to see what a joke this was he's some kind of impact on car number 66 the Trop arctic car of Dick Trickle as he begins to unhitch climb out of that thing here it is again it already cut into the wall one time a little further back the car goes up takes a straight shot in the wall Bryn's knocked back to the right on the car right now he's hanging you know the right fronts destroyed the right rear is knocked back and he can't keep the car where he wants to go the car is gonna go in any direction it wants to go with a right front ripped off and this time Dillons coming here nowhere to go well right in the left side or what the car Hill in the victim of circumstance and full speed from the in-car camera here we go here's the in-car camera let's loosen the top of the track trying to hold it back the natural thing to do is steer the ride try to correct the car car got a real big bike back in there's a second playful villain that was a real strong joke to the left of the car there's their dick shifting gears going people I'll be fine without his present look at him pitiful he drew though out there you can't hurt these old guys a 49 year old winner of 1001 the first race he was ever in and Dick Trickle out of Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin walks away from a bad one here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway here's Bobby Hillin moving away from carnival rate we'll be back with more live on TBS of the 500 in Charlotte on this autumn afternoon welcome back to Charlotte Motor Speedway we've all had our head Robbie Moreau so in our minds this week there's something that I'd like to say ricky rudd really said it better than anybody could I'm just going to let him speak for all of it Rob had a tremendous future well I say Rob was a human being he made a mistake but by no means should you hold that against him I mean you know he lived a good life he was a good person but here you got a talented racecar driver let's not let's look at it like this you know the best drivers in the world Rob was one of them he couldn't handle alcohol and driving why should a young kid on the street think he could do it when you've got the best in the world car's driver Merritt couldn't do it kids shouldn't try it I'll tell you what we've been talking all week long off and on about the radio stuff let's go down to pit center Mike Joe and Barry Dotson they've got a update on this horse but now let's take a look at the differences between these two tires you stand them up here's what they look like when they come out of the mold the bias ply tire has a very definite look before you mount it up in the radio very yes it does a bias ply tire has a dip right here as you can see you can inflate that tire but this dip actually won't come out until you're maybe at the end of a run 90 miles by then you've worn these edges off this is an 88 inch right rear tire on Neil Bonnett race car at the end of that 90 mile run it might be 89 inches it's an inch bigger than it was let's take the radial straight across you can sit a can of STP right here it won't go anywhere this tires 88 inches at the end of 90 miles it's still 88 inches like Bill Elliott said it's a great product we just need to learn more about it the big plus for the radial it's almost puncture proof so when this bias ply tire grows an inch over the course of that run and the radio stays constant if the car is really hooked like Elliott says today it stays hooked that's exactly what you see in when number nine and we've been seeing it all day long let's go back upstairs man you know we've seen that happen a lot of times and you'll see during the course of the day our guy take the lead he might drive off and also need paint when you get into the radial tire the guy that's dominant it's going to stay dominant we're seeing something Johnny there's one thing I would like to follow up on the Ricky Rudd quote you made recently and Ricky Rudd asked us to make sure that everyone out there watching knew it one of the major newspapers in North Carolina erroneously put in that Ricky Rudd has been arrested for driving under the end and it went in the paper and everyone immediately started pointing fingers but in real the real case made the front page made the front page of the paper but in real case they picked up the wrong ricky rudd it was not ricky rudd the racecar driver and he is sick about it he's negotiating contracts he's doing things and this could kill someone like his reputation ricky rudd does not have traffic problems he's never been drinking and driving he just want America to know that hey they picked the wrong guy and he worked real hard to live the right image speaking of work I will see if I I think let's go to own the paper before this is over if I see one of the sports editor sports editor know maybe go down help you front the paper every now but that was a bad shot he was so upset let me tell you what they learned our touchstone at a press conference the other day you know they jump on the drivers when something like this happened I say racecar drivers do this do that they don't see the time that your Children's Hospital the jury raising the other night on Monday night we raised 112 thousand dollars for charity here in Charlotte every one of these drivers participate in some way away from the racetrack trying to help the general public and then when something like this turns around this kind of a bitter shot but the only thing we keep doing is working our side trying to help it everywhere we can and hopefully this is hurt for good but but I think the point is I think the point is as much as anything here that when you live life in the fast lane when you have all this notoriety that you have to accept if you become a big-time racer that it just improves everyone involvement for Fiat in the press be at the mechanics be at whoever to be on your guard and to be ever vigilant about if you care about this board about making sure its reputation doesn't get tarnished all right let's move on here we're at 252 laps complete we're getting set on a restart it will be one lap to green let's go to Bob Barcia fellas during all the hubbub no crew has been busier than the Richard Childress Racing Goodwrench crew for Dale Earnhardt behind me he has paid for stop they have changed the springs on the back of that car and I think the question you'll Baden asked earlier they have definitely changed their strategy now that they hear Mark Martin running around on seven cylinders out there they have softened up the back of the car because all the bodywork damage on the number three Chevrolet has made it very loose they want to help Dale go as fast as he can but they know now that he can make up ground on Mark Martin thank you Bob as we come down to the restart after this sixth caution of the day I know this will come as a shock to many but somehow Bill Elliott remains in front he's only missed 15 laps being out on the point all afternoon he has Davey Allison directly behind him Morgan Shepherd in 3rd so it's Ford one two and three as they go back under green in the mellow yellow 500 here charlie they're all got the jump for him a little bit bills going now drive is hard to be can answer he'd love to have this lap back put it back in contention indeed his life laughs look at Darryl work cord on the bottom of that Chevrolet [Music] seem to have the advantage waltrip not giving much ground as they come around to complete this lap at speed [Music] in there I thought for a second we might be to take them three wide and hit these but Davey Allison's running will rant we'll all we contracted pushed up a little bit there you're going to dare back nobody able to contain Elliott in the number 9 car [Music] 33 days Marcus on the bottom remember he's driving injured he's been on crutches since July down there at Daytona Shepherd in third Harry Gant in court back in fifth is beau died in that green and white Buick number 26 Kyle Petty at six cope is seven Dale Jarrett falls to a tricky when just moving around him rut takes eight Dale Jarrett now nine Alan Kulwicki tenth and Michael Waltrip rounds out the cars in the lead lap running a very dot submitted earlier when he filled like our benefactor destroys I do also that car has been strong all day might not be able to point that is sitting right there defensive he could be a factor of his race before it's over and so Ricky Rudd in the five prime do you see the 75 just in there rich worsens every spot earlier off on the backside 26 is in fifth in Cajun wonder what that is only thrown out the great car that that's a yellow river by parties yellow ribbons to put inside of these race cars it honor the young the guys overseas and also certainly got a yellow ribbon one on one out here's the black like in vanilla they will not here's Elliott drawing away once again is bidding a dude the rest of the field as we take a look at the running order for you're a fan all the participants still out here motoring in this mellow yellow' 500 delegate stays first [Music] and stays burst and stays first it's Facebook he's just locked up easily Toby over there here's Eliot and first av Allison now 30 car lengths behind of them diggin long to get out in front that's what scares you about so fun to race against the guy is that strong when he can open that kind of lead and just sit there he's got some busted you know he's got a struggle to get away from you but did that take the tow three laps if Phil's got the distance he won't then he slipped it comes Dave and they're feeling a little build on the inside I don't know he's going slow or did you let him go by nice pick the pace back up you know I don't know no he's come down pit road must have cut a tire - he's got the lose of course got the tire mr. Carter number nine who has dominated a race Elliot on pit road what I love about race fans he probably got the loudest ovation when he started the race and introduction they were all for him he just got a standing ovation for breaking and coming down pit road so they changed during the race sometimes if you stink up the show if they look a little better he was running away with this one ability he had him covered now Davey Allison's race to win in the 28 he's changing four tires and he's going to run a real float it'd be close on getting left he's going to go out no way about it other than a lap down but the hips of all the people at the field he's the most lucky to be able to get left back he's still he's gonna be way more than a lap behind 260 laps complete of 334 to be run he could get himself a cocky and gets hitched up he could get back into it and you watch old Darrell get out of after Davey Allison it was the crafty old better and come and add him and he won't get back now he didn't get it back from Bill but you look into that picture who just drove right in it there's Davey Allison in front and here comes Waltrip trying to take that lap back Davey Allison how would you describe the way Charlotte has treated you in the past good and not-so-good and we've been here 1987 we should have won both Winston Cup races here and we let problems get the best of us I got you know I'm blew an engine and both of the races in 1980 87 in 1988 I got myself in a wreck had fast car both of them should have won the Winston here in 1988 and the throttle stopped backed off and held the carburetor from Gorham wide open so I ended up finishing third in it you know there's some good and some bad and that a good is that we ran good the bad is that we didn't finish good and you know we feel like that Charlotte owes us one but we know that had never given point away yet I don't know who's keeping up with a topic last lap deal but they better get to watch out because Elliott you're going to show what it's like to go to the rear of the front he's had inside out fat doing it on a straightaway then the quarters East line I was watching the same thing it looked like everybody else's decide to the race track once he gets to this group of cars to be interesting to watch until he is just driving by like everybody else there is number 28 here's number 9 this is Elliott who's running a lap down Bill Elliott in the tail end of that and he just getting ready to get some cars but I just want you to watch how fast he goes by these are great cards and that is a great car that is the 21 Dale Jarrett that's been running seven he's insane the top ten and a little I mean he is skedaddling running at Bert style as he comes around he came out on the racetrack about a quarter mile behind these guys he left his Russell down he'll go clicking up through that hurt remember he's running from a lap down and he is running he in the 13th position Waltrip and Rick Wilson run in front of car number nine one lap down ten cars now on the lead lap the lead lap is Allison and 28 first Sheppard second Gant third Brett Bodine fourth changed that put Gant up into second now as he just goes by Morgan Shepherd Harry Gant taking over in second then Morgan Shepherd third Brett Bodine Ford Kyle Petty fifth Ricky Rudd six Dale Jarrett seventh pulp is eight kwikki ninth Michael Waltrip ten we were joking earlier about Harry Gant when somebody says they're going to make you go to the front room and put him in the back of my construction that's very strategy he's always known to be set back there oh so they just had to win the race where who shows up again these came from blast and brought in confusion here he is in the second spot trying to close on Davey Allison his main goal is to beat Miley Walter pit road Oh time to second time in the last eight laps for Elliott on pit road Bob Archer bill only it brings the number and I back in I think the problem is a broken wheel he's got terrible saving on the inside of the wheel at the left rear another one comes off a new set go on the left side no adjustments to the race car other than new tires and some more fuel it will take another close look the left rear wheel is going very bad on the number nine car if that's the case though we might as Barry Dodson but there's a possibility that's up front with a with a caliper the brake calipers something sees the wheels up it's going to be a problem causing yeah it could be and when you get in that vagrant hurry it could be a loose wheel you don't know if there's one that will come loose first like we did with us lamp you're trying to win a championship it was the left rear it tries to come loose it drives against it so we'll have to wait to see what happened here just a tough break for bill but like you said Neal if anybody can make up the ground he can do well now he's almost two laps down Davey Allison has closed up behind and there you see Davey going into turn number one before this great throng then the lap car of Darrell Waltrip that is riding in 11th place one lap down the 17 car and moving up behind Davey here comes 33 Harry Gant closing in that 33 Oldsmobile car that started from the rear of the field Morgan Shepards number 15 his third Brett Bodine is in fourth right behind him in fifth is Kyle Petty actually is about 10 car lengths between Brett Bodine e-file fifth Elliott led 242 lat when he pitted ten laps ago like we did earlier like when that happened something would go wrong here's guy leave the race we're just bragging I feel that as this drove will fit Kirkbride one has another from its egad in the 33 continuing to quite a cook time away from Davey Allison in the 28 as the complexion of the race has had another major change a major change in the championship battle earlier as the wheels literally fell off the effort of Dale Earnhardt in a championship race now Mark Martin has had problems he's backed up running in 14th position and he's running on seven cylinders Davey Allison has taken over in the lead Harry Gavin's second Shepherd in third here's your leader but that Ford is beginning to feel some pressure from the Oldsmobile of gas the 1982 champion here there you see the interval from first back into second position looks like a welter don't lose we have a problem sunspots are starting to blacking out our picture it will come back shortly but audio will stay good so don't turn us off we're going to be right back here in minutes who's on get thee sunspot you're going to fix the Delian nASA has reduced that's why they call me Johnny fun once a year they'll always seem to have a Charlotte lilia don't pit road again we're serious problems Eliot back on pit road [Music] and so for the second lap Down Goes Eliot in car number nine let's go to Bob Archer apparently what's the problem with Eliot are is his left rear tire equalized brought the bodywork in the car down to the point where the hub was actually wobbling and wearing out the inside of the wheel obviously a chronic problem is going to take them a while to get something like that thick if they can fix it at all so with 270 to 300 34 laps complete the day that looks so golden for Bill Elliott has earned another sad hue [Music] well we're back with you once again at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with 276 laps complete and we understand the sunspots have gone away I guess they must happen only on a chrono Maggie's birthday or something anyway here's Davey Allison out in front is race to win now with victory in sight for that court there by Robert Yates here's the 26 car just getting around the 15 that's Brett Bodine moving into third and Morgan Shepherd falling to fourth Harry Gant is staying second on the field see a lap car in between there the 75 yellow car Britt Wilson is now 12 incidentally Jack Pennington has worked his way to 13th and the rookie is one lap down from the leaders in having a very good luck and he's having a good run that he's been working to achieve on several occasions from on parent forth for the rear and really hung out on the car the cars not just like he wants it but he's running very well [Music] shifted over filtered a via this Darrell just barely in the shot that Dara was on the bird to get his lap back and he has been able to get up there where they get Ernie Irvan going another lap down the nose all saw his clock they explode right away Doyle car going down into turn number one and if it is the 12 and Hut Stricklin a good start here today and then got backed up and amidst the race see what that is indeed it looks like Bobby Allison park number 12 it's on the bottom of the racetrack but is not bringing out a caution at this moment I know that Billy is several laps down now but he's older versions of get one of those back he's given up on Darrell he'd be right that called Davey in the racing business there are a lot of different situations out on the track we asked Davey Allison what the worst situation could be the worst thing that could happen would be to be sitting in the middle of the racetrack you know with oncoming traffic racing back to the yellow flag that's a word plane that could happen and you know the suspense would just tear you apart hopefully nobody would hit you but you know that's one of the most frightening things about this business when you sit down and think about it scary so I put it out in my mind I don't think about don't ask um kind of question well that's the worst situation for him I think the worst situation I ever saw was when he went across the guardrail at Darlington rusted in fire who L knew is in the car is dead he pulled up stop jumped out of his car went in and stuck his head in a burning racecar to save his son and David already hit the road so it scared me to death I know it did it did but we saw Davey Allison out here describing a moment ago what was the worst moment for him and that's indeed the moment that the Bobby Hillin lived down here at the start/finish line and I know Neil bottoms come through in Gertz truck let's go to our Marc Fisher who was really hot thank you very much and we're up on the roof now at the top of the show we told you about 150,000 floods that showed up for the race today well they had to get here somehow as you can see behind me here's most of the cars for the race and at 5 bucks a pop pumping wheel is going to make some cash now highway 29 is behind me real easy traffic going right now but in an hour when the race gets over and you're stuck in it you better pack the lunch because you're going to be there along we've got all those things about a hundred and sixty troopers to try to get them out of yet all the time they do the best job anywhere in racing I think get people in and out they'll block a highway four lanes one way and four lanes the other way they get you out of here well I'd really like to thank partner mr. because he brought cake over from the rich people over the freeway cliff to Neal and it made us both bigger people I'll take back so for the best that that said about far to the past just some of them look at number nine down here we can see where Harry gears makes a pit stop with E coli entire DeLorean had some with equalise Merrick several of the drivers have had the same trouble why are tired suddenly equalizing I don't know whether Barry got a lot of into that point oh this is the open let's look at the Barry he's been there he's working with a higher force where do you know what's going on with that well you don't know about an equalized tire the bad thing is it puts you in a predicament like Bill might have been and you have to get forward the car vibrates so bad you can't pick out which one it is what it simply is from the tire air container tire gets the outer car just cannot stand you see Eliot piggyback one of those laps that he is down the car number nine isn't giving up till Elliot getting right back into this thing taking one back or caution putting him right back in this hunt big time Darrell Waltrip has closed up real tight on getting his lap back I think David's car has gotten a little loose but it looks like Darrell is about to get a shot to get his back we got to remember Bill Elliott has new tires and new rubber so he does have better rubber foot looks like they didn't slow down a little bit as Elliott had the field covered now on new rubber at rocketship number nine is gaining two and three car lengths per lap there are 200 86 laps complete 334 is the distance here you see Elliott's number 9 drawing away from the 28 a lap in that distance back here's the 17 Walter trying to get his lap back for that Chevrolet Darrel's really got a lot more to gain right now that bill bill is a couple of laps down Darrell is birthday Darrell gets around he's back in contention in he's won a lot of races appreciate the situation on Mark Martin he is running two laps down and is in 14th position [Music] we give you a little more insight award that is with Jo lamp-wick mark since they hit the last concert Park and Dale are still to have a Kade bill has been complete the lamp of all hearts of heart stays in the same lamp will fail so go wherever they stood before they're just about that level Mary Mary Gannicus has a great record on this track one year and 82 he's had a couple of seconds out here at second here he is quoting another time getting right back into this thing in that second position and closing again on the 28th 28 left him for a while now he's finding him another clue you can feel pit road Harriet's crew standing over the wall side man's they're waiting for me to come in but so I guess here he feels like he had a problem carpet night school and off again so maybe they don't have problem the Oldsmobile of Harry Gant trying to find any advantage to close on Davey Allison what he'd really like is a caution flag right here and try to get his quote Winston Cup career wins the Charlotte Motor Speedway we'll be back with more as we move in on the finish of the mellow yellow' 500 for 1990 on this great mile and a half facility we need to get down here now we've got this should be pay-tv we're educating special state we've got Barry Dodson down there we're starting to go take advantage of it by Jordan a they're going to lightness on some of this frontier rear steer so well Neal we've explained front steer where the steering linkage is in front of that crossmember at the centerline of the wheels and rear Stuart's behind a bear is going to show us what that means to the tires on the race car as it goes around the track basically the steering box doesn't know where it is line right here on the front skier it's ahead of the tires it's up here on the rear steer it's back here in the back the biggest difference I've seen and Neil Bonnett has probably felt this difference a front steer cards a tie rod right here holds the front of this car in as you go in the corner it starts dragging this tire you feel the whole tire it gives you a good good feel especially with the radio over here with the rear steer you see the tie rod it's in the back it's not in the front you go into turn push it out use this part of the tires I don't think you used nearly as much it's a loser race car it doesn't feel quite as good this is our favourite this is what we won the championship with this is what's leading right now a very isn't there a new combination being made of like a rear sphere somehow you know there's a new combination and it belongs to Bill Elliott he was over with it he ran fifth at Martinsville with it he's had some success you might wonder if he's incorporated some of that and today he's running cuz he's office : very he has what you throw up me a picture that centage of the house just like to do that with I'd say what it's a two-door whatever he's doing meanwhile car number 33 Gant has made an unscheduled stop he is gone a lap down Harry Gant in car number 33 now finds himself in 11th position one position behind Waltrip a lap down [Music] nine cars are in the lead lap michael waltrip is that ninth in Kulwicki eighth Coke in seventh the sunspots came back folks I hate that I thought I had them cleaned up just listen to us we'll let you know exactly what's going on and I have this thing fixed in about two minutes takes about two minutes for them to go by well no I I control sunspots and I didn't realize that you know this was the big thing and I didn't know Christmas having a birthday I'll get it straightened out seriously folks there are some sunspot problems today and it's interrupting our signal some and they expect them to go about a couple of minutes and clear out again situation is this Davey Allison's 28th his first Morgan Shepherd is second Brett Bodine is third Kyle Petty is fourth Ricky Rudd fifth Dale Jarrett six Alan Kulwicki seventh Derek open eighth and Michael Waltrip in night and now there's a change of position as Michael Waltrip goes up to eighth and Derek hall or Jericho fall into that ninth position more of a mellow yellow' 500 from Charlotte after these messages our coverage still has the problem of sunspots folks we're at 300 two laps here at the mellow yellow' 500 Charlotte Motor Speedway with Neil Bonnett and Johnny Hayes I'm hence flyer topside watching as the 17 car at Darrell Waltrip makes his lap back and gets in the lead lap going around the outside and Davey Allison is ready to make his final pit stop he's coming down pit road as he completes lap 303 to make this stop final time in let's see if it's going to put a rubber on or just pop the tank get right sides up there right now going with the right I don't see if working on the website it must be go write that over we stopped 11 and a half seconds for a couple of tires and fuel and away goes Davey Allison back into the hunt one thing about 11 and a half second stop there's no way they could have gotten that car full again Perry hands off the pace on the backstretch in serious trouble but he was just in for pit stop Harry GAD is idling back in and since we're still having trouble with sunspot let's pause for another commercial message and hopefully if the return will be ready to bring you pictures live from Charlotte of the finish to this exciting race coverage from the satellite is being bothered by sunspots and continues at this time for which we apologize but there's not much we can do about that except tell you that we're at Charlotte and we're watching a dandy race from 307 laps complete pit stops are the order of the day Davey Allison has just fitted and that gives Kyle Petty a shot at first place with his Pontius Pilate now first Michael Waltrip is showing in second third as Erich Koch forces Bodine and we're into a period of Fitz off Dale Jarrett's number 21 has pitted once and is pitting again Davey Allison has come to fifth with 309 complete and now number 42 Kyle Petty is coming in for fuel and tires when we saw the 21 come in this is his second stop it did not take on rubber now let's come back in the second time they're taking gas only they're so on fire 42 Kyle Petty and politician chance only taking the gamble 334 the distance free can complete this time by Neil Bonnett what do you think Lord you know the desert different I will count naked missus but you'll expose about dating Judas burn it but the only problem is baby has tires own so these guys are stark employed strategy in the pit well down here the pitch is getting interesting Davey Allison when he stopped got to tires squeal dreadful dying cat Susannah Kyle Petty if you oddly outliers economist Chris Hobson Georgia Scotsman coming down right to the wire not for 30 Michael Waltrip takes the lead late in the going the Maxwell House country time carnival 30 Pontiac of Michael Waltrip finds himself in first place as he wastes about in second position the 28th Davey Allison third child Petty and fourth Morgan Shepherd now 310 complete in the Mike Walter and carry the body on their own little competition going Walter started bagging 36 spot they've been battling for the ketchup award all season silly $557 in this race the guy gets opposed to those all year just money grant so Walter kind excited the body for doing too well in qualifying for this race Terry started up in the 19th position so Mike stands to gain a lot more spot he let Jerry have it on that one 11 lead changes among 9 drivers today let's see who's going to be next to come on pit road as Michael Waltrip Earnhardt is back in another time if you just joining us the wheels literally fell off his campaigns the national championship when the lug nuts were not cited up on the left side they weren't tidied up they came off and one wheel roll all the ways return to it put him 7 laps down but then mark Martin's number 6 lost the cylinder and Mark Martin is backed up into 14th spot on the tail end of one lap down almost two laps down Kim this is a great time forced to say hello to our friend a boy who was injured in a race in Wisconsin we just say hello to and make sure that he knows we're thinking about him and can't run away from the skinny boy he's not going to walk for a while but but he's ready to race he's going to race he said absolutely he'll be back in April and we're tickled bed to hear that but I'm just just want to make sure that we said hello and all the race car drivers crew members eight they would like to know they can't wait to see buddy buddy get back out or we get this whistle okay Ernie Irvan whose car got messed with rather severely and is running without any of the front panels or the as number four back on fit world and other time and Michael was it for the moment as the field covered number thirty days out here you just need to find out when his pit crew is going to bring him in and seal him up maybe Allison second comment any third Morgan Shepherd Ricky Rudd fifth Darrell Waltrip six red bowtie 8:59 those are your cars in the lead one left out intent is Dale Jarrett followed by Rick Wilkins to lack sound now is Jack Pennington and flopping to three last sound is March Martin even 30 and this is how far to the Finland I could tell you what michael waltrip our new race leader is coming in the team plans to bring him in on last 342 seven laps right now of course they're praying for a caution in this seven laps interim and he has a big advantage on the rest of the field he has them covered by about a third maybe a half a lap at this time over 28 Davey Allison in second it what helps will be there but stretch it like this the longer he'd stay up the listview I'm sure to be a fuel only stop and he'll probably go right back to Atari well I just make sure you guys know that I my guy just called me he did take care of the sunspot for me so everybody's watching again so you don't have to talk too much in crochet that's a relief for everybody Michael Waltrip in front Davey Allison in second and the interval is about half a lap to decided here there you see the number 30 car of Michael Waltrip looking for that first Winston Cup win he has to make a fuel stop and it will come six laps from now girl waters comin down pit road who is actively laughed at this foot effect again running in sixes number seventeen comes on pit road they're taking dad's only also it'll be interesting to see how how he does with the other gun pit stop so he's taken gentleman 81 winter back out and for the moment Michael Waltrip stays in the lead Davey Allison's second Morgan Shepherd third but Michael will have to pit with 318 of 334 complete ready for this pitstop that will be a quickie on michael waltrip [Music] there's a leader way back to that line before you find Davey Allison as soon as you make that pit stop it's put a turn around in the other direction do have done in Davie Allen still is in command of this race whoo nice Michael make you stop Navis going to pick up that 10 or 12 second later on the interesting you see how smooth and how steady he's going to be with the pressure pulley on and that pit stop after laughter 160 miles an hour TVs that car on pit road this final time after all this activity here's baby Allison in second spot lapping Ernie Irvan atlases fence bills michael waltrip never water Winston Cup race is now broken in on the grand national circuit and tasted victory a few times has the lead for the moment but he is faced with a quick pit stop late in the going Davey Allison lurking there in second spot and behind him times in Morgan Shepherd number 15 and third feel getting spaced out a little T into this the 30 of michael waltrip there's a team that has really come on a course next year they change sponsors and they expect to be even more formally picked up considerably more money with Pennzoil coming into Winston Cup racing for the first time and here comes the leader on the pit road Bob Barcia is there Davey Allison is entering turn three it's good of you [Music] there was a gas only stuff for Michael Waltrip and he leads here like a top fuel dragster but I bet that nozzle wasn't in there for more than a second and a half if he needed that gas I'm not sure he got it up I see it the same way I don't know if they got any gas in the car at all or it's really close though if it's mileage he could be in trouble 322 of 334 complete at the number 30 comes back to speed but he's given up first place Davey Allison is first Morgan Shepherd in second very ducks it'll be the first one to team that you pull it off your hero you fence on a deal like that look that that's the only thing you do in a situation like that they're comparing exactly right that is best shot right now spend a lot of times you can on pit road it takes about six and a half seconds to jump 11 gallons and I think they were probably in the car maybe a second than happen to most it's going to be close how much fuel can you dump a second into these cards Barry we can get the two gallons right at it just if you got good chance and a good dance man like Norman was born that wouldn't carry into the finish going to be close there was well one thing how much was left in there before he put it in but to cushion to the hell [Music] officer they'll be glad to see the play pick the black ball that was yellow car still right now there's the leaders Davey Allison deployed in first Morgan Shepherd is in second Michael Waltrip is third Kyle Petty is fourth Ricky Rudd fit Co wiki six Brett Bodine seventh derrike cope in eighth those are the cars in the lead lap any ver swells car coming by run strong all day at the person time outside the top 18 only by that brand new water tower they're constructing over here on the backside of Charlotte Motor Speedway you see Davey Allison flicking off another lap 326 of 334 complete this time by Richard Petty's car number 43 on pit road unofficially shot at 18 double checked out on Richard Petty's position car number 43 as we watch Davey Allison backside continuing to work on a victory in his 115th Winston Cup start he has collected seven Winston Cup checkered flags thus far in his career has one win this season that of Bristol Tennessee on the high high banks bass sprang on those 35 degree Bank he came home victorious try to add to some two million three hundred thousand dollars he's collected since he went into Winston Cup racing Borden forest board and second Pontiac three Allison Shepard Waltrip top three [Music] see the 28 car now we go back to Morgan Shepherd gnorga driving for budge more and having a great afternoon here Morgan Shepherd really showing but mores card to the nines in this event [Music] take a look at that interval another time between Morgan Shepherd in the 15 and this 28 car out in front out of 4 that is the 3 second interval that's a lot three seconds to the punch maybe Alison may be on his way to winning at Charlotte wasted his dad one father won this race on three occasions and here's Davey Allison the number 28 trying to duplicate that beat this afternoon what a great victory this would be for Robert Yates his car owner also they struggled they lost their engine man tragic dad's and Robert had to jump in and take control back over this would be a great turnaround with you it sure would you know they'd be great good they worked with Bristol rage that they best fit their highlight of the season the rest of it they had a lot of downside to it it ain't holt ain't me the good shot the officer Davey Allison Stan oneness and 71 came back and wanted again in 72 one of only three drivers to wind it back to back wanted to get in 78 now here's a battle developing for fifth spot Ricky right in the five and Alan Kulwicki in the seven had developed and it went away just that quickly at kwikki motors on line and from Ricky right Rohan well from getting it you sterling the pitch in a little bit Ricky and Alan have gotten together before on the racetrack Ricky Goodin 3:31 incomplete now to finish these two are letting each other go maybe Alison stays in first Morgan Shepherd in second as the laps trickle down grumbles one was a position on the racetrack said wait a minute the alarm clock gone off here this guy found gotta go back to work BC Allen run up on it but really really using the traffic Andy handsome traffic in front of him but he will use that traffic and he will plant in that rearview mirror that you discussed that program on how it work this track will wear you down to this right there the cars and the drops are worn down Davey Allison with a couple to go scoots around out of turn number four and brings that Robert Yates sectional hassle and car back to the line white flag is out on Davey Allison well as dad won this race for but more wanted for a Holmen moody wanted for junior Johnson one time I'm sure Davey Allison's going to want to win this and for Raymond thought yes indeed Raymond Fox who built so many great engines over the years were so many great teams and was lost the week of the die hard 500 on a Telugu this year down to the line last lap checkered flag getting ready to fall on Davey Allison waving as he crosses the stripe and the Robert Yates team with Davey Allison the Alabama gang and look at this battle coming alive seven and five through this clock wheel the wheel to the stripe they hood quicken is supposed to addicted Ella Toria this place to Alan Kulwicki solicitors they do elect a line Morgan Shepherd yet second so Ford get first and second Michael Waltrip where the dandy day has third Kyle Petty fourth Alan Kulwicki as you saw in fifth Derek : 7th and Brett Bodine in 8th a lap down in ninth the stripe will be Darrell Waltrip excitement for this Robert Yates team they've worked long and hard and this is a big win for them we'll be back to me Davey Allison the guys on the crew man they they have just given me everything I've asked for you know we've had some tough times but we've overcome them Roberts the best parlour you could ever ask for you know I think he's probably a tile with my dad but I got to drive through my dad yet I may have one day right now Roberts best you know that you ran a lot of the top guys into the ground you and the racetrack how was your card in the closing stages car was perfect we started off a little bit too loose and Jake told him guys what to do to it to tighten it up and we made some adjustments on three different pit stops and car got just right and all we did was put tires on it from there on and just try to run smooth you know I hate to see Bill Elliott have problems but that happens in racing we lost to hear because problems that we should have won and we'll take this one truck closer to the heavily guys role here it's a big day for you got enough energy to celebrate tonight you better believe it okay there it is from the winner a great job by Davey Allison will our time at speed track computer got a real workout today first Ernie Irvan up there at 167 point seven eight miles per hour but the fastest lap of the day on this watch was Bill Elliott 32 point oh seven seconds and time XP track computes that to 160 8.40 miles per hour all of bills crew will get a Timex speed track stopwatch we'll have other things stuff they'd hear from the Charlotte Motor Speedway let's go to Bob Barcia Michael Waltrip a fine third-place finish today Michael you kind of rolled the dice there at the end and it didn't quite work out well we had a plan and it was a great plan when that caution was out at the end we decided to come in give up from track position but get me some fresh tires and get some more fuel because fill it up to the top and we knew if we had to make a green flag stop it would be a brief one and that would catch us right back up and it worked we had hoped to run a little bit better and maybe caught the front Pooh but I'm real happy we ran strong as the day wore on got better and better and it showed at the end this is a special day for our whole team our car owners Chuck and lo ran through up and turned one watching us and all people from country top of my class are here too so we're real happy this is our best finish of the year and a third and fourth at Charlotte so hopefully it seems getting closer to win everybody asked you that you never know what to tell them because especially here I started 36 and I couldn't hardly say yeah I'm on I'm getting real close to win starting right there we proved that we're tough and we're going to be around for a long time third place finisher today Michael Waltrip will be back to sum up the results of all the action from the day's events here at Charlotte after this but he's continued for Davey Allison as for Bill Elliott though he may not have won the race he was a runaway winner of our true value hard charger
