1989 Week 6 - San Francisco at Dallas

[Music] and welcome to a sold out texas stadium in irving texas for today's game between the defending world champions and the dallas cowboys the weather in a word is hot almost 80 degrees already they're expecting it to get into the low or mid 90s and good afternoon everybody welcome to dallas texas i'm tim brandt it has been a wild week in the lone star state as a matter of fact the nfl owners were here earlier they could not decide on a commissioner then the herschel walker trade that still has this town buzzing but the players here in dallas say hey they're glad it's over with they want to get on with rebuilding now and try to win a football game meanwhile on the other side of the field san francisco has some problems of its own as we turn to dan jigets now and it appears joe montana has not recovered sufficiently from the elbow injury he suffered last week and will not start i talked to joe before the game you know he popped the burster sack in his the elbow over his throwing arm he says it's very painful and while he understands that you know the decision not to start him at quarterback today from a medical standpoint from a competitive standpoint he wants to play and the other key for the 49ers today though is they've got to get their running game going this may be a good opportunity with steve young starting at quarterback we'll watch the running game we'll also watch the passing game because dallas is very thin in the secondary as a matter of fact they're thin and everywhere they'll dress only 40 players four of them are brand new just in from the vikings through the herschel trade and darren nelson says he will not report and play for the dallas cowboys so the depth is a factor with dallas well in the secondary isaac holt is one of those guys that came from the and he will play today as a matter of fact he may be pressed into service in the nickel situations but the real key today for the cowboys is how will steve walsh play they say that this offense is a quarterback oriented offense now well now with herschel walker gone we will see all right dan we're all set roger roosevelt will be kicking off for dallas and deep for the 49ers terence flagler and spencer tillman and we'll talk a little bit more about flagler as this game goes on it'll be flagger at the six that's a block and there is a flag on that block as flagler carries it out to the 18-yard line and that's where the 49ers will start things off the tackle was made by manny hendricks and hendricks will get a start today for dallas because of the banged up secondary there we'll wait to see what the flag is 49ers most successful road team of the decade and ben dreith the referee today tells you that it's going to be a clip against the 49ers number 89 on a receiving team illegal block that's 10 yards first down that's wesley walls who had the push from behind right side of your screen wesley walls number 89 is going to come in and push the defender from behind you see him right there that's where you pushed it right in the back and you cannot do that that's out come the flag comes out you know a lot of times when those defenders are running down on those kickoffs they just get a little bit in front of you you want to still get your block so you push them in the back can't do it first down 49ers inside the 10 for steve young his first pass of the game and it's complete to rathman and rathman goes out of bounds up close to the 15. take a look at that offensive talent for san francisco steve young does get the start and he'll be playing with the rest of that veteran line bubba paris number one pick back in 82 guy mcintyre jesse sopolo took over this year for randy cross colley barton and brent jones who took over with john frank and heller gone craig and rathman are the setbacks rice and taylor out wide and on passing downs mike wilson will come in along with harry sydney [Music] second down caller four young to throw again does has the completion and the first down tackle on craig lockhart got there along with randy shannon the rookie let's set that defensive lineup for you for dallas tony tolbert gets the start his first nfl start on the outside to move ed jones inside along with hamilton on the other side of course jeff coat the linebackers jack del rio eugene lockhart been very steady in the middle and randy shannon the rookie who was just in on that tackle walls hendricks horton albritton bates and holt come in in the nickel and dime situation holt really pressed into action early here he went over time yesterday at the dallas facility first down for the 49ers craig bounces outside lockhart gets there to make the tackle but not before roger craig picks up four tim one of the keys for the 49er offense today is going to be number one how will their guards get out and block on the dallas linebackers to get that running game going for roger craig and how well is tom rathman blocked today searching out the middle linebacker when they run up inside or going outside wide san francisco as i mentioned been the hottest team of the 80s 49ers have won 17 of their last 19 nine straight on artificial surfaces and that's what they're playing on today second down and five the other side of that coin is dallas which has really been struggling and lost 17 of the last 19. lilly scrambles straight ahead and has another 49er first down up at the 37-yard line tackle made by tippins and ed jones gate of 11. problem there for steve young as they had eugene lockhart watch him number 56 he's going to rush the quarterback right up the middle of the offense and as a result steve young is going to get flushed out of the pocket because this play comes right up in his face now you're going to see steve see he sees eugene lockhart he says hey i got to take off the one thing that the cowboys told us they knew about joe montana was he like to run straight up the field when he scrambled they were concerned about steve young because they felt that he could get outside on him well that time he just took her right up the middle of the defense you see the numbers on young it's first down and 10 for san the francisco up close to the 38. roger craig left side with a hole to the 47-yard line before randy shannon can trip him up sir roger that time when he hit the corner guy mcintyre is leading him outside one of the things that's difficult to do for running backs is to get timed up with their guard so when they pull it's like a swinging gate when that guard makes his block that running back and hit the corner and get along the sideline roger craig and guy mcintyre have to get in concert on that along with bruce colley so when you hit that sideline you get the block from your garden that brings you up the field you mentioned how sensitive the 49ers are about their running game it has not been as successful as they wanted they also have not scored many points in the first half second down and won [Music] has time and dumps it off to craig who's into dallas territory to the 47-yard line before jack del rio can trip him up there [Music] del rio got help from vince albritton jack del rio i'm sure is watching the world series very carefully he was a catcher at usc and guess who his first baseman was who was that mark maguire who's now playing for the athletics of course up in oakland and i'm sure jack is following the series very carefully still a very big baseball fan eugene lockhart is along the same lines lockhart was drafted by the giants quite a baseball player in his own right opted instead to play football he says here you can hit people and get away with it first down the 49ers steve young now three for three in his start fires this one over the head of rice rice knew it was over his head and didn't extend himself for it because manny hendricks was right behind him and ready to drill him in the middle of his back well jerry rice ran to the first down sticks and then made his turn and as he settled down there you watch him he's gonna just run down here he sees the first down stick settles down in there and gets ready to make the reception it is simply overthrown by steve young well he was a couple of yards short there but still it was way over his head he's about two yards short of the sticks he's now three for four so he's not showing any signs of rustiness craig and rathman of the setbacks on second down and call it 10. [Music] i don't know what drew him but barton fired off quickly and unless he was drawn which i doubt very seriously this will be the second position five yards second down harris barton is going to be right on the left side of your screen watch he's just going to take off almost done while they were sitting back in the huddle he just took off he had a nice down block there though he was going to come down on it two tall jones legs robert williams and ron francis are both out of that secondary for the cowboys so manny hendricks moves from the left side to the right side in second and 15. [Music] steve young rolls that way and the play is whistled dead there's a flag at the 45-yard line ben dreith is our referee today and this is not the way the 49ers had anticipated starting off three penalties and we're still just underway here in the first quarter that's a fall start on number 79 five yards and it's second down and again it's harris barton and on the first play he jumped early as well you know what it is a lot of times when you get a quarterback a new quarterback the cadence changes with different quarterbacks montana's maybe a little bit more clipped and rapid than steve young's is and as a result it throws off your alignment also keep in mind barton's got a bad wheel and he may be thinking about that a little bit more than the snap count sometimes they've moved some lymon around too on that offensive line young man number 79 is a pretty good football player you can play inside at the guard positions as well as playing offensive tackle on either side very flexible and a very good pass protector ben dreith is asking the clock officials to put four seconds back on the clock see the penalties against san francisco one major concern now as it'll be second down and 20. one major concern for the cowboys is if the 49ers go to their passing attack and if they ever go to four wideouts which they very rarely do they'll be hard-pressed to put a nickel or dime package together they don't have enough defensive backs rice in motion eugene lockhart lockhart's been on a tear over the last two games he's had an interception a fumble recovery a touchdown half a sack three passes broken up and 21 tackles well you know everson walsh told us yesterday on a bad day eugene lockhart is going to have about 11 tackles but the key there though again as i mentioned to about the 49er offensive line is we've got if you're working cooperative blocks along with the guards and centers they have got to slide off and get to that middle linebacker because eugene lockhart is very active in the middle for the cowboys [Applause] horton and albright now are the two defects in the secondary for dallas they know it's going to be a passing situation on third and 18. they have all six of the defensive backs in the game and younger scramble out and he won't get the first down as a matter of fact he gets just beyond his original line of scrimmage and again he's tripped up by eugene lockhart who got help from tony toby [Music] [Applause] then when you talk about somebody like steve young the one thing that you realize as a quarterback when this guy came into professional football he ran a 4-6-40 so that scares defenses when he springs loose barry hilton onto pawnee averages as you see just over 43 yards healthy average he also has excellent hang time and there's decker derek shepard shepherd king from new orleans near the redskins will hit inside the 10 and go out of bounds and that's where they'll mark it the market at the six yard line a 40-yard eight minutes 54 seconds remain first quarter san francisco drove 45 yards held the ball six minutes before penalty stopping and now the cowboys with steve wall start life after herschel steve walsh 62 of his passes were complete last week this is only his second nfl start first down in ten at the six [Music] and his own end zone throws over the middle and has it complete to his tight end steve folsom at the 32-yard line jim fonhorst made the tackle but it's a gain of 25. jim fonhorst has has the receiver that folsom man-to-man all the way down the field straight down the middle it's a seam right you see 85 there to tight end taking off straight down the field seam routes you know that's going to work well on the man-to-man coverage and he just has jim faunhorn speed on the way one thing all the players say about walsh is that he doesn't play like a rookie he's got great perception he checks off quickly if he sees a weakness and goes to it first down straight ahead they bang and johnston gets a couple let's set that line up for you two and a newton bob white crawford kerr and kevin gogan are the down lineman steve folsom the tight end in the backfield now that herschel's gone the new era begins with daryl o'clock and daryl johnston only 80 career yards rushing between them the wide outs are martin and irvin and broderick sergeant and james dixon come in in obvious passing situations it's second down [Music] great penetration by the san francisco defense led by charles haley and of course michael carter the big six-year veteran out of smu defensively it's holt carter and fagin holt starts for larry roberts who's banged up has a shoulder injury holt himself is hurt he has hip problems haley phone horsed michael walter the leading tackler for san francisco and keenan turner and in the secondary pollard griffin fuller and brooks tom homo will come in in passing situations but ronnie lott is not playing today six defensive backs now as johnny jackson comes in for san francisco on third and eight walsh out of the shotgun has pressure frozen across the middle has to complete and urban has another dallas first down jeff brooks made the stop but irvin had him beaten a gain of 10. now i'm sure the cowboys saw what happened in the situation last week against the saints with the count with the 49ers they saw the slant routes do you see a pick up underneath michael irving comes up underneath and that's the same thing that the new orleans saints were having a lot of success with last week against these 49ers crossing patterns expect to see a lot of that today out of the cowboys dallas moving the ball early here started on their own six six minutes five seconds remaining first quarter tim brandt along with dan jingles on first down walls to throw again irvine looks deep another dallas first down in san francisco territory the tackle was made by pollard irvin wanted a flag thought pollard was a little bit rough after the play a gain of 14. [Applause] michael irvin came down ran a 15-yard comeback just settled down in there he's going to be on the right side of your screen he'll come into view here in just a second but you can see steve young's got some nice protection see he's got those passing lanes in front of him you can see downfield irving on the comeback again push the defensive back off then come back to the football give your quarterback an opportunity to squeeze it in there walsh is three for three 50 yards to the 39-yard line so steve walsh off to a quick start i like what the cowboys offensive line is doing up front you see them reestablishing the line of scrimmage that's what you want your offensive line to do get those defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage and get their feet pushed back about three or four yards then you know you're doing your job and give you your running back an opportunity to get in there and get a couple of yards jimmy johnson the only head coach in the nfl without prior experience in the league has a 10-year contract youngest nfl coach [Applause] cowboys go to three wide receivers on and they're going to call in the grasp throw it right at pete coogler cougar will get credit with the sack pete coogler number 67 is going to come from right in here instead of coming on a hard rush and steve walsh is going to try to get out of there and try to move over to his left side but it's just not going to work out because cool could get us a nice block and you see the twist in there the work the defensive tackle and the defensive end was haley number 94 and both of them end up getting close to the sack of course pete coogler gets it a loss of seven so it'll be third down in 13. for the young cowboys they are young twisters when those defensive linemen you see them cross each other's paths and get to the quarterback they need 13. walsh goes deep almost a marvelous catch by martin he couldn't hold on though but he paused for a second came behind the defensive backs laid out and couldn't hold on i'll tell you what though jeff fuller made a nice defensive play they're just reaching in and popping that ball out at the last second jimmy johnson says that's all right it was a good drive come on off we'll have to get it back mike saxon comes on the punt he's having a fine year as you can see there and it's john taylor number 82 one thing you don't want to see though is your punter having a great year that means he's kicking a lot taylor led the nfl and returns in 1988 10th in the nfl in 89. fourth down in 13 saxon to punt taking all the time he needs and gets off the wobbler off the side of his foot it gets a gallows bounce though and goes inside the 10 and will be down at the nine so saxon gets a break but there is a flag up at the 44-yard line it was a 37-yard punt no return and we'll wait for ben dreith the referee to give us the call it's against san francisco 24 and a receiving team was holding after the kick they get the football after a 10-yard penalty so it's harry sydney who's called for the penalty but the bottom line is san francisco will have the football but he'll be backed up even further than they were the first time inside the five the market at the 4. [Applause] it was intended for taylor and overthrown the reason why steve uh the reason why steve young had so much time to throw the football though was tom rathman got a great block in the backfield see his man go flying up in the air you know he's he's a throwback one of those guys that used to like used to play in the 30s and 40s you know tough guy in there now watch as you see rathman come out of the backfield watch him throw this block out here on the side right there he cuts down the linebacker excuse me outside the defensive rushman that's tolbert just cuts his legs out from underneath him he goes flying up in the air barry helton on the punt his first one was 40 yards this is the second time san francisco started inside their 10. they couldn't get it out this time a lot of pressure on helton but he's going to get it back and derrick shepard will take it up to 42. inside san francisco territory to the 35-yard line derrick shepherd and there's another flag a 47-yard punt 23-yard return and they're going to bring it back number 45 on the receiving team run into the kicker that's a five yard penalty manny hendricks that's a five yard penalty it might be your first down it might be it could be it is the five yard penalties because he touched him and unintentionally did not run over the kicker he just bumped into him boy that hurts the cowboys let's see the contact here [Music] everybody's getting blocked in there i don't understand how you can make that call when people are getting blocked into the kicker [Music] not much contact either i see what is manny hendricks went up to try to block the kick came down and then hit the ground and rolled it to the kicker nickel and dime let him play it's a contact sport first down for the 49ers to the 27-yard line green bay has taken a 7-0 lead over minnesota and hershel walker returned the kickoff 51 yards after the touchdown but they brought it back with a penalty as you see the clock remaining here in the first quarter 130. interesting thing that the 49ers are doing with their passing game is they recognize that dallas many times will find their linebackers in a zone coverage they're about 10 to 15 yards deep that allows you to throw to those running backs coming around circle routes into the middle of the field you can dump it off in there and just let them run with the ball first down 49ers [Music] with an entourage breaks a tackle from lockwood and carries it out to 35 and he's knocked out by vince albritton what the 49ers want to do in that swip that sweep ao when you get both of your guards pulling out bruce cauley is still getting picked off on the back side so you're kind of you're kind of losing your your backside guard but watch these guards pull out of here you see guy mcintyre lead it now the key is if you can get collie out here and get him to lead the play as well then you got two guys blocking out on the corner but watch college 69 get bumped off right there so he gets thrown off his track but mcintyre throws a nice block out on the corner extends himself gets the guy out of the way and lets roger craig running the football that's the way the ao is drawn up that's the way they ran it you have to explain that ao action second down and four quick drop quick throw taylor has it at the 44. ao action huh ayo the a guard and the ogun the a guard is the onside guard of the guard to the side of the play the oh guard is the backside guard he pulls out he's the second guy he's the one who's supposed to turn it up field john taylor turned it up feel that time in a little hitch play caught it along the sideline you know see he knows those defensive backs are playing off and giving him some respect playing off about 10 yards you run about five yards down hitch up catch the football and then run with it taylor's a fine receiver but his headlines are often lost behind the greatness of jerry rice first down 49ers [Applause] young with the dish off underneath the rathman who gains two [Applause] young looked deep couldn't find anybody good coverage by the cowboys although taylor thought he was open and he just dumped it underneath to his safety valve who was rathman the one thing about throwing to the running backs coming out of the backfield you know eugene lockhart if he's not up on the line of scrimmage he's going to be coming up to get that running lockhart a pretty good lick one of the problems that the cowboys are having well it's not really a problem with spy design watch these three linebackers here a 4-3 inside they're playing inside these defensive ends these outside linebackers are they're all going to drop back in zone so watch this area of the field it's wide open and that's what san francisco is really exploiting in their passing game you see the running backs craig and rathman turn around right down in there those linebackers in those deep zones and as a result you can dump that football off into your running backs second down and two walsh is watching as jung has hit his last five in a row would like to duplicate that for the cowboys right now the dallas defense is struggling a little bit touchdown san francisco brent jones 36 36-yard strike from yonda jones damn you know when you're working against the zone your tight end's going to be open on the scene routes it happens all the time against zone defenses you see brent jones running the scene route right down the field he knows he's one-on-one with a linebacker jack del rio in that case it's no contest brent jones into the end zone for six points that's six straight completions for young now plus the touchdown and mike cofer comes on to add another point [Music] and the kick is good so brent jones with a 36-yard touchdown reception and san francisco is on the board with 13 25 remaining in the hand dry is bold and wet the taste is dry is less sweet nickel all dry read longer so taste after taste there's just no aftertaste nicolo dry old taste with no the players here and conditional picks now darren nelson has already said he won't play for the cowboys as it breaks down it's really not a 12 for one deal those conditional picks are tied to players who reported this week for example if jesse solomon is released before february 1st and the cowboys get another number one pick it's very complicated there was a report that steve walsh was tied to that deal jerry jones emphatically says that's not true and another report said if herschel signs a long-term deal that dallas gets a cash payment we may never know everything about the deal we know this darren nelson has decided not to play for the cowboys [Applause] mike koffer to kick off for san francisco at seven nothing 49ers dixon [Music] a short kick and it's taken by shepard he has a big hole out across the 40-yard line they'll mark it at the 41 for derrick shepard return of 27 yards mike ko for the kicker had to make the tackle take a look at the rushing yards for dallas minus herschel walker as you can see the quarterback troy aikman is leading the rushing yardage but the key now just got handed a note uh herschel walker's first run from scrimmage for the vikings 47 yards that'd be more than troy aikman with a 38. you see everybody else there the wide receivers punters and everybody else herschel was a great man a great deal to this offense and the cowboys in terms of the running game first down in 10 dallas at the 41. it's back to the line of scrimmage maybe charles haley met him and drove him back cowboys tried to run the counter ot that's where you pull your backside guard and tackle to come in and block but watch nate newton number 61 as he tries to turn into the hole you'll see the hole develop very nicely for the cowboys but watch newton number 61. he'll have to turn around and block his man who daryl haley charles hale excuse me who unfortunately meets the running back in the backfield down and ten san francisco leads seven nothing 95 yard drive young to his tight end for a touchdown and this pass is complete to daryl clack gain of five tackle made by michael walter dallas offense has been struggling all season long and you can see the numbers here it doesn't look very good offensively 28th in the rush 22nd the pass total of their deadlines defense is uh not doesn't look very much better of course the past has been fairly decent for them early in the season but now with the cornerback problems that may even go by the wayside today johnny jackson and tom homo come in for san francisco as they load up on a dime four wide receivers on third down and five for dallas there's pressure thrown underneath it's complete for a first down derrick shepherd out across midfield to the 47-yard line we saw dallas through this earlier take all your receivers drive the defensive backs off the off the line of scrimmage and then bring your other receiver up underneath that's the the ex-receiver bring him back up underneath flat right along the by the loss a couple weeks ago of their heart and soul dan hampton he suffered yet another knee injury and leslie visser takes a look at the all-pro tackle and the terrible toll that the game has taken on his body [Music] i personally performed five operations on him all on the at knees time he had torn the cartilage on the inside of his knee and he'd also tore in a tendon called the papadia stemming on the outside of the snake i thought perhaps we ought to start thinking about doing something else for a living a football player's career isn't always measured in yards or tackles or touchdowns sometimes it's measured in punishment given or received one doesn't become an all-pro without experiencing a great deal of pain in dan hampton's case 11 years worth the bottom line of this game is to get harder than the other guy we know it's going to be a brutal fight it's this it's someone said it's a contact sport it's not it's a collision sport and there's going to be injuries there's going to be a lot of pain involved with it just how much pain in the 1980s hampton has averaged one knee operation per year and each procedure has been followed by grueling months of painful rehabilitation throughout this lonely process hampton developed a unique attitude that has helped him cope payne is my friend i've been able to deal with it because i want to play otherwise you know i'd be out of the league now faced with the uh with the choice i'd rather play with the pain and still be played no one doubts his motivation but the price he's been willing to pay could cost him for the rest of his life my doctor says if i play again and tear it up again then i may not i might have a real hard time walking when i'm 40. uh i didn't you know i didn't feel like telling him i have a real hard time walking now when i'm 32. in the final year of his contract and perhaps his career hampton has no regrets i've seen a lot of players play this game great players dick butkus mike ditka was it worth it i think so brent i mean people have eight nine ten operations but they don't really understand that if you love doing something how could you just give it up real easy you know i think i read this week that dan hampton had retired no uh that right there was a report that he did retire and dan gave me the word last night that it's not true now two-thirds it's a sad fact that two-thirds of all former players have permanent disabilities but dan is not going to give up easily i'm telling you he wants to play i think i want to remind everybody that we've got a college texas a i by the name of johnny bailey with this run he wrote tony dorsett's 13-year career rushing record of 6082 yards what about his pro potential it's a pretty exciting bag brad he's only 5 8 178 pounds but he's projected to be a late first round pick an early second round but he keeps out of out of the same conference government came from philadelphia all right let's uh send you back to the stadium and the game you're enjoying here on cbs if you follow the travails of the san francisco 49ers this is their history thus far this year they have not been outstanding in the first half and again today they are tied with the cowboys 7-7 welcome back to texas stadium everybody i'm tim brandt along with big dan jiggets and it's not really been a surprising half other than the cowboys have hung tough they've hung tough but the key though for the 49ers is if they had joe montana like they usually do you know that they own the second half today with steve young it's gonna be a real test for the 49ers the cowboys are desperate for a win down here both quarterbacks have looked very good today on both sides of the field but let's show you how the team scored it was scoreless after the first quarter then this was in the second quarter steve young finds brent jones a tight end number 84 streaking downfield he beats jack del rio on the zone coverage running a seam route just gets in behind him makes a nice reception and tumbles on into the end zone you know every time you run against that zone the tight ends are going to run the seams on you a running into the kicker penalty against dallas kept that drive alive and then the cowboys came back just before the half with 21 seconds remaining on this pass steve walsh gets some good time from his offensive line looks downfield and finds kelvin martin for about 32 yards he beats tom homo and johnny jackson on the play there was a question as to whether or not it was a penalty and a catch on this it was reviewed and rule a touchdown all right that made it 7-7 let's take you now and show you some of the statistics they will better tell the story of the first half between the cowboys and the 49ers you see san francisco with a very very big edge in terms of rushing the football still not great though for the 49ers and what you're used to seeing out of them with roger craig dallas is suffering without herself walker young had almost 50 yards of that rushing for the 49ers both quarterbacks as we mentioned are hot 10 for 13 for young 11 for 13 for walsh i think the thing is you're seeing a young steve walsh doing quite well for himself in his second start and what's been very impressive as you look all the way to the right hand corner of that statistic is walsh has not thrown an interception so that's the touchdown a piece i want to show you some interesting numbers though as we start the second half don't be fooled by the present score because what's taken place thus far this year is dallas has been shut out in the third period look at that the big goose egg 61 total points none in the third period meanwhile san francisco has been red-hot in the third period and has scored 66 points in the fourth and so it's been a second half team they've been outscored everywhere else in every other quarter but the fourth 66 points but again keep in mind that's when joe montana has been starting at quarterback steve young will get his chance to prove the 49er legend true today so mike kopfer will kick off for san francisco and it'll be fixing the shepherd deep for the cowboys high kick it'll be taken by dixon at the two [Music] out to the 34-yard line and once again a flag flies tackle was made by johnny jackson [Music] yard return we'll wait to see what the penalty is after ben talks to don wedge the back judge they'll move it back it's against dallas number 50 on a receiving fee that's a 10-yard penalty and it's first down number 50 is steve hendrickson who's carried several numbers over the last couple of weeks and a matter of fact he was originally drafted by the uh san francisco 49ers and we figured he wants to get a couple shots and his old teammates may have been a little aggressive on that one henderson wore number 99 last week david howard came in the trade he now has 99 and hendrickson gets jersey number 50. hard to hit a moving target that happens when you're young first down cowboys first pass second half walsh gets it off throws it underneath the urban and michael urban breaks the tackle and carries it out to the 17. so it's a gain of three after a lot of work by michael irvin the pressure came from michael carter straight up the middle michael came right back along the line of scrimmage that time to make the play and really he catches the ball on the line of scrimmage you see him in motion here now he's going to turn inside after the little pig play there by his tight end slides back along the line of scrimmage but jim fonhorst has him in his sights along with michael walter and you just don't get away from those two guys very easily but michael irving does make that little move there to slip him for a yard or two [Music] it'll be second down and seven dixon on the reverse breaks a tackle and carries it out to the 27-yard line first down dallas tackle finally made by jeff fuller now see you run the reverse when you know that the backside is not staying home let's see what happens in this area with the outside linebackers and the defensive ends does kevin fagan stay at home no he goes down the line of scrimmage when you see that happen you say as an offense well maybe we can beat him on the corner there and you see that they did indeed indeed beat the 49ers on the corner there's only one guy back there to make the play and he missed it first down in ten now martin and irving come to the bottom of the screen dixon to the top the carrier and again there's absolutely nothing up the middle to an a newton's white curve up front and they've really had a tough time trying to push and open things up for daryl clack well you know when you have to make adjustments uh and dave what else going to get a chance to play today he started for the cowboys a couple of times last year you make those changes when you change the offensive structure what you're doing how you're coming off the ball all of a sudden you've got a lot of big guys up there because that's what dallas wanted last year big offensive lineman it's tough to get that running game going again three wide outs now with martin in motion on second has another down down to the 44-yard line again it's fuller who makes the tackle but martin on the crossing route has a gain of 14. yeah you have to believe the cowboys really did a nice job of taking off the plays that the saints were successful against the 49ers with and going right back to them the crossing routes up underneath run the pick plays outside pick me get that one receiver cross him over and take the defender off at least make him get out of position and then allow kelvin martin to come back up underneath jerry jones is smiling as all the young guys now start to click walsh [Music] still trying to get black on track james may be won this time it's hard for a running back to get on track if he's not getting the blocking up front and certainly with the cowboys offensive uh front there's some big people all of them about six six six seven and close to 300 pounds that means you got to start moving some people off the line when you got that kind of size but what the 49ers are doing is beating them with speed daryl clack four-year veteran out of arizona state came into this game with just 73 yards rushing for his career he has 12 yards today on eight carries [Music] great play by kena turner oh and he almost had an interception it was intended for michael urban where he dropped back in his zone and he spied the ball all the way steve again this time steve walsh didn't really look off the receiver you see keena turning right in the middle of your screen number 58 see him drop back in he says now i got to go outside get coverage it makes a nice little slap there you know i used to play basketball with kenny turner when he was a youngster growing up in chicago and he always could jump and dunk and as a result you can see there he can still get up in the air even after having had the operation on his knee and his knee rebuilt does not like the artificial surface playing well here today doesn't even tape it anymore nobody said that calf is still skinny [Applause] but it's a gain of 12 and dallas continues to move the football well if you're the cowboys you want that kind of a match-up with kelvin martin working against jeff fuller a much bigger guy again another pick play you see michael irving coming up underneath or maybe it's a shepherd there but you see kelvin martin is open on the outside as a result of all of that traffic happening with those picks happening right down near the line of scrimmage but that's a match up you wouldn't mind having your strong safety of your fast wide receiver three catches 58 yards and a touchdown martin goes out of the game [Music] first down in 10. [Music] folsom has another first at the 26. and again it's fuller and fuller gets up shaking his head he's frustrated and he's tired a gain of 15. not only that jeff fuller recognizes also that his linebackers watch the linebackers bite on the play action steve walsh runs nice play action you see those linebackers standing in there they don't know quite where they go michael walter in the same position as spawn horse that allows the tight end to get behind him and now the safeties have to make the tackle folsom laid a pretty good look into forwards first down cowboys at the 26. [Music] and again there's not any room to run jim fonhorst filled the hole alone with michael carter and carter can fill a lot of holes he's six to 285 pounds tim what you can really see with the dallas cowboys offensive line though is that i talked about reestablishing the line of scrimmage and against against the 49ers now watch their legs that's the line where their legs are now watch they do not move those those legs past the line of scrimmage or even to the next yard market you see their offensive lineman cannot get any kind of push on that offensive line and as a result the defense meets your people in the backfield michael carter carter's a wide body second down and call it nine [Applause] and it was a poor pass by walsh irvin had him beaten but the key there was pollen had enough time and enough speed to close in on the play [Applause] we've got somebody down it looks like michael is hurt here's the isolation on the play michael urban see him give him that post move and then go back to the corner now watch darrell pollock closing on the play but you're right that's not a great defensive play it's a great save after he's beaten and the crowd want to pass interference on pollard meanwhile more importantly michael irvin is hurt and he did get pushed well you hate to see that [Applause] five catches 49 yards for ervin you see him there give him the post move then go back out to the sideline paul is beat right now the ball is drifting up maybe uh michael irvin had a chance to fair catch it down there but now he got hit right in the back of the leg just as he came down in the end zone and he is still down when they're in the end zone it looked damn when he hit that his leg stuck to the turf didn't have any give and when that happens there's only one thing that will give that turf is very very brittle down there in the end zone of course it doesn't see a lot of action sometimes down here in dallas and that may be one reason why it's still very brittle down there the weakest joint on the strongest limb in the body and when the shoe doesn't give the knee usually does [Music] if they do that to test to see if there's any movement and find out if the ligaments are stretched at all when you see the trainer pulling on the leg like that and of course the dallas crowd wants pass interference on the play you've seen the replays on the big screens here that is not revo reviewable except for the crowd and they have been rather vociferous in their boos talk about the cowboys though and what they need to do to come back and one of the things that jimmy johnson will continually tell you is that you have to have some patience when you have a lot of young people playing it looks like michael ivan's going to be okay the one position that jimmy johnson him there's no question about it well but see he's got as much right to catch the football as the receiver the ball's on the throne so the defender can come back and catch the football that's what happened on the play third down and nine dallas incomplete it was intended for broderick sergeant [Applause] [Music] [Applause] see just because a receiver is an offensive receiver doesn't necessarily mean that he's got the right to catch the football and the defense can't do it daryl paul at that time steps in and becomes the receiver the ball is hung up there in the air broderick sergeant wishes he could have brought that one down or he was 6 10. i'll tell you this shepard thought he was open in the end zone and kelvin martin thought he was open as well it's a 43-yard attempt for roger ruzick [Music] the cowboys are threatening to take the lead with 8 35 remaining in the third quarter [Music] [Applause] johnny jackson is gone a 61-yard return of the block field goal attempt and johnny jackson put san francisco back in front and it appeared to me like steve wallace number 74 is an offensive tackle was in on the block right up the middle of the cowboys offensive line the block was made by wallace so just like that san francisco comes back takes the lead and kopher comes on to add another point now it's barry hilton who's the holder [Music] and the kick is good so with 8 23 remaining third quarter a quick turnaround and the 49ers take a 14-7 lead steve wallace number 74 is an offensive tackle as i mentioned earlier six foot five so he's got plenty of height comes right in the middle of that watch here as they collapse the dallas uh front and get into the ball the key is to get penetration and move people back steve wallace gets in there gets that big hand on it just slaps it down like a rebound he's rejecting a shot and now jackson picks the ball up takes off the only guy that really has a chance to catch him is roger rouzak and if that happened you can believe jackson would never go back in the locker room for the 49ers another look at it you can see roger roussack at the end of this play is the only guy that really has a shot at stopping him because there's a nice block by wild boy he really got up in the air on that one now watch jackson make the take off here gets out in front and there's nobody near him there's no way he's going to get caught on this play and the fifth round draft pick out of houston turned it on 62-yard return for the touchdown get some style points too watch him collapse that inside front of the dallas cowboys now the center really didn't block anybody that i believe is stefanowski is a long snapper but his responsibility is to get the ball back to the holder that's his key responsibility everybody else has to block down toward the center and that didn't happen that's right everybody should be taking a step in you see they do that indeed do that but wallace gets that great penetration in the middle the center was dave waddell the kick center and he never really got a block on anybody 14-7 this will be dixon at the one look out boy he had a hole for a second out to the 27-yard line a return to 26 so between dixon and shepard cowboys have some return threats attacker was made by daryl pollard the word on michael irvin from the cowboy bench that we just received is that he has a sprained knee and should return they don't think the damage in there is serious they don't think there's any tears right now they say it's a sprained knee and he may return the way he was talking uh to daryl paul as he was heading to the sideline i suspect that he really wants to get back in this ball game [Applause] his second sack of the year dan you hear about coverage saks tim and then what that really comes from is good coverage by the secondary downfield so walsh looking at time took a step up inside and really couldn't find anybody to throw to downfield so he just let's go steve walsh now backing up you see him he's getting a pretty good view downfield now watch his head you'll see it rotate around he says now i got to get out of here still pump fakes can't find anybody coogler makes a nice sack turner a little pressure that time for the defensive front of the 49ers forces steve walsh to unload to his tight end folsom who he finds coming across again you see him in the middle of your screen generally those guys are going to be a little bit faster folsom came into this game with three receptions and you see what he did today he's got five catches so eight for the year most of them coming k-mart there kelvin martin makes a nice reception now watch these moves in here he puts about 55 moves on one yard line gains about two yards after the moves tackle made by fuller and homer homo dave waddell is injured boy that could be a big blow too because kevin gogan's already left with an injury at that right tackle position it appears he's pointing towards his hip as the problem look at this dan everything they're throwing is well pretty much short well the thing that they've been effective on is that the play like we just saw with shepard throwing the ball after the pick play and allowing the receiver to run with it the rest of the way so it may only be uh 10 to 19 yards but then the receiver makes the best out of a tough situation by running well with the football 15 under 20 yards michael irvin back in the ball game he comes to a wide out position and steve walsh now has one of his big weapons that's urban at the bottom of your screen right there first down dallas daryl clack tim sometimes what you need as an offense and an offensive line is to get one play like this one where you finally spring your running back dallas really doesn't get that good blocking off the line of scrimmage but they stay in front of their people and daryl clack cuts the ball back near the center and it just scoots it up through the line of scrimmage 17-yard gain more than he's had all day the longest run of his career first down cowboys trail by seven [Music] walsh in trouble and he sacked holt came through cleanly untouched and made the sack so he's got one and a half sacks now for the year shared that one sack with charles haley well it's a counter trade you see the backside garden tackle pulling walsh fakes the hand off there tries to set up but hey no he can't pierce holton's right in his face and then as a result gets the sack loss of seven it'll be second and seventeen so he now has one and a half on the year and hope never even bit on the uh on the play action fake there just met steve walsh right at the corners continue to make big plays and hurt themselves somehow with a breakdown second down and 17 for walsh this will complete the kelvin martin inside the 30 to the 29 yard line it will not be enough for her first down so it'll bring up third down but they were working on don griffin on that side and they pick up 13. i asked kelvin martin during the week and said hey what's your favorite route the one that you feel you specialize in the most and he said well i feel it's kind of the the 15-yard comeback but that's been the route that i haven't seen him run today he's been running a lot of crossing patterns and uh and out patterns dallas last drive they went 65 yards to the san francisco 25 held the ball almost seven minutes and got no points as a matter of fact the 49ers got seven third down and three [Music] they need a big play here's the first down to the 15-yard line tina turner and johnny jackson finally make the stop but it's another gain of 13. and credit kelvin martin with a great block downfield to help out his quarterback when he saw him scrambling and in trouble steve walsh knows that he's in trouble as he drops back can't really find anybody open get some decent protection up there really wasn't flushed out of the pocket because of pressure now when you see that block right there by kelvin martin or kena turner just enough to allow the quarterback to slide in there and get about four or five extra yards on the play crowd is back in it [Music] welsh and that was a fine defensive play by [Applause] [Music] don griffin made a close play last week and again he makes another one here he's going to be coming from the right side of your screen that's where kelvin martin is running the goat pattern steve walsh lays it out there very nicely for him and actually when you look at it griffin had was out of position there but close very quickly on the receiver martin it'll be second down and ten as you look at don griffin 424 remaining in the third period but look at the time of possession the san francisco offense has not had the football but they are the only ones who scored walsh inside the five to the three michael irvin there's a flag and again they were working on don griffin [Applause] six catches 61 yards for that man michael irvin the great thing was when irvin made the attack he saw it it was a hand catch because he had the ball in his hands as he was going out of bounds almost shaking it in the defender's face see him he's still trying to get that crowd worked up a reminder that the dallas cowboys have not scored in the third period this year they've been shut out had a shot just moments ago with a field goal attempt had it blocked in san francisco illegal contact on a defense number 29 they'll take to gain decline a penalty and it's first down he was calling on griffin [Applause] so the big game by irvin sets up first and goal at the two thornton chandler comes in at tight end for dallas steve folsom stays in it's a two tight end system johnston and clack will be in the backfield and they're gonna review it one way or the other dallas gets the ball down here either you take the penalty if they say that michael irving was indeed out of bounds then then you still get the ball based on the penalty play but play stands the way it was called on the field that's a first down ben sounded a little incensed that somebody upstairs might even be questioning his calls down there walsh is now 19 of 25 for 226 yards and a touchdown the cowboys trying to get their first points of the year in the third period right here first and goal from the two [Applause] [Music] johnston to the goal line no signal chet brooks tries to come out of there with the ball and thornton chandler wants no parts of that [Applause] the only thing chef brooks is going to get out of that play with some exercise he tried to run that one back it'll be second down in goal from inside the one now let's see if those cowboys can get those helmets down and move some people off the offensive line nate newton there blocking against michael carter who ends up making the tackle but the key there is newton gave his running back enough of an opportunity to squeeze it into the end zone or near the end zone still no signal it'll bring up third down and less than one good play here by jim number 55 who really stops the momentum of the running back and michael walter on that defense of the 49ers you see both of both of those linebackers come right up over the top and stick the running back as he's trying to come through both of these runs dan have been to the right side as you see it again nate newton number 61 on the left side went halfway to the bench and started pointing at himself said hey jimmy johnson come behind me i'll get it in maybe you want to run the ball third and goal for the one touchdown [Applause] [Music] yarder sets up rogers so with two minutes and 50 seconds remaining third quarter we're tied again at 14. when you get down on the goal line you try to keep things pretty simple you don't get real cute he's just running off tackle just pounded in there on the defense third try works the third time as a charm good blocking there by johnson number 48 helped daryl clack get into the end zone and he is thankful this isn't an ad for a tropical vacation this be traded it hadn't been an easy road for this man it certainly hasn't and they've had to make a lot of adjustments with injuries and all of that which naturally comes during the course of a season but uh george seifit is a guy who has both feet on the ground very solid guy kind of quiet a little bit different than bill walsh in that sense but really has this team headed in the right direction defensively as well as offensively well it's going to be a big week the trade deadline three o'clock tuesday afternoon and these two teams certainly will make some of those post-game show coming up
