[Applause] well the end zone touchdown he's gone and this is going to be a break for the longhorn touchdown one man to beat lookout you talk about the bouncers going the longhorn's way hello and welcome to red river classic i'm dana larson over the years the rivalry between texas and oklahoma has been one of college football's best today we spotlight the 1989 game that year the sooners came into the game ranked 15th nationally having won the previous four over texas but o.u was in the second year of a three-year ncaa probation and because of that the 89 game was actually blacked out to a live network tv audience instead prime sports now fox sports southwest made the game available on a pay-per-view basis here now with the call of the game we join dave armstrong and irv brown [Applause] [Music] [Applause] prime network presents college football today from the cotton bowl in dallas texas it's the oklahoma sooners versus the texas longhorn hello again everyone i'm dave armstrong so happy to have you along in dallas today for this traditional rivalry and all the cliches are appropriate this game is so special half the stadium in red half the stadium in orange working with me today irv brown and herb when they talk about college rivalries they're talking about this game well it starts the night before with what they have a little parade and it's just incredible better not stand around a pile because somebody's going to take your head off and the one thing that never has a bad day is speed that could decide it today it'll be interesting to see what happens down there in the midst of the war with full armor on is bob berry bob you're right in the midst of all that emotion i can't wait to see and witness the contact in this game that's what's been special over the years and this is a streaky series right now oklahoma is on a streak the sooners have won four in a row they're trying to win number five straight and the last tie was in 1984. there was a freshman though in 83 named edwin simmons that guided the longhorns to a victory and texas likes their freshman tailback today adrian walker while oklahoma has a great defense and again they're confident they can extend their streak here at the cotton ball we're excited we'll tell you about injury updates we hope we're not too busy doing that and we'll try and bring you some of the color that truly is oklahoma texas thanks bob we're looking forward to your insight down on the field of the cotton bowl in irv as we look at this game for oklahoma first of all the sooners come in this and you think all their players on their team have never lost to texas yeah isn't that something uh it's been a long time since texas has defeated ou and the sooners you can uh they just don't want to be the first team to do that let's take a look at uh what oklahoma must do first of all mike gaddis must have a big day well is there any question he isn't going to look for him to run the option line i don't believe they'll run straight at texas they must pressure gar deer gardeira is a young guy and i look for people like corey mayfield to really get after him and the secondary must play effectively i just believe that the longhorns must throw the football if they're going to get it done taking a look at what texas has to do they've got to protect gardeer well he got some people capable of doing that particularly cunningham he's a good football player got to establish a run i mentioned cunningham lynn amity thinks he's as good as he has had and you got to make the university of oklahoma throw the football i've never seen oklahoma throw the football they like to run it we'll see if texas can make them do it it'll be interesting to see what happens here today we're right in the midst of the texas state fair since 1929 this rivalry has been included in the texas state fair festivities and we're going to be back with the opening kickoff from the cotton bowl when we come back in just a moment i'm dave armstrong along with irv brown and bob berry as we are so excited to be in the cotton bowl this afternoon for this one the cannons are there the cowboys are here the horses are arrived and even bevo has made his appearance for the texas longhorns i think the thing that uh probably you find uh so interesting about the match are a lot of things i like about it but both schools go into the game with different quarterbacks and they start at the beginning of the year as we look at the sooners come out as they run out they run through the sooner crowd and then they go to the other end of the field and they're booed roundly by all the texas longhorn fans and now here comes texas [Applause] right now a sunny sky here in dallas very warm today 90 degrees with a light wind that weather could play a factor later on with cramps and things such as that they're expecting a cold front to go through texas sometime later this weekend but it's not here yet and it's very warm down on that field the astroturf will make it seem even warmer than the 90 degrees reported officials for today's game the referee is frank shepard the umpire robert holliday head linesman bob jones line judge george hayward tommy moore paul laurie and phil luckett also some of the officials in today's game this is the 84th meeting between the two schools texas certainly has the edge in the series but oklahoma has won the past four including last year's 28-13 win over the longhorns [Music] this is one of the great traditions of the university of texas oklahoma's already on the field texas hasn't gone anywhere until the school song is done [Music] longhorns will have their hands on the football first oklahoma did win the toss but they deferred to the second half well you can understand that that defense is still as solid as as i've watched it in the last decade they're under the football as good as [Applause] anybody [Applause] there's a look at brad riddell the punter but also the place kicker when it comes to kicking off for the sooners [Music] back deep for the longhorns chris samuels [Music] will be at the back of the sooners in the first quarter [Music] the 84th meeting is underway this kick will go through the end zone and texas will start on offense from their own 20. peter gardeire is the first freshman to start the texas ou game since 1944. that fellow's name bobby lane and the longhorns won 20 to nothing gardeira would love a little deja vu here today one of his targets will be johnny walker he's the longhorns leading receiver thanks in part to the double coverage tony jones has been getting this year ed cunningham has been having an all-america type here at left tackle he's been super this season after missing last year with a knee injury [Music] right now five players in the backfield and now texas will come out with a single back offense gardeer wants to pass on the first play he gets it off to jones jones goes out of bounds after a pickup of five up to the 25 25-yard line chris wilson forced him out there the sooners have given up an average of under seven points a game dante williams one of the pillars of a very strong front wall frank blevins isn't called stickman because he's thin his 50 total tackles leads the team at his linebacker position kevin thompson will have his hands full in the secondary especially with the loss of the injured ken mcmitchell at left corner mcmitchell expected to miss about a month second and five from the 25 for the longhorns samuels cutting back no room and a flag comes in frank blevins and dante williams combined on the stop i really believe that they got tubbs the ball goes back to the 13-yard line second down from there second and 17 now for the longhorns gardeer on the draw play to samuels he had a little room to run but then he was smothered by scott evans the all-american candidate out of his defensive tackle position scott evans admittedly not having the kind of year he would like for the sooners but he's still a great one bob barry is down on the field bob what was that like as they came through the tunnel exciting coach gary gibbs was very emotional you could tell when he came out and he also told us earlier this week that if he won the toss he would defer because he wanted to play defense first and force texas into passing situations they rushed for less than 70 yards in the loss to open the season against colorado and less than 60 yards against penn state so they want texas to pass they're going to have to pass here on third and 15 from the 15. gardeil on the rollout he wants to run now looking to get to the 30. he's got it right here showing excellent speed he is rammed out by kevin thompson but excellent speed from the redshirt freshman peter gardeire you can see why they're going with them dave here's a guy who does a tremendous job catches him in a zone normally when you're in zone coverage somebody's going to come up make the play a loose container on the outside in gardir who just took over the starting job after that great effort against rice to get him the victory scrambles for a very important first down one more angle if texas has to punt the football deep in their own territory they would have been in deep trouble gardeir a big emotional lift for the university of texas longhorns first down at their own 34-yard line pickup of about four on the play the give again to samuels and now we got flags flying as a little extracurricular activity is going on in a game that like this you've got to expect that kind of stuff you got a major problem here because good took his helmet off and hit somebody with it and he's done for the day oh my that's a good football player who's out of there he took his helmet off and uh hit one of the texas longhorns and he's gone ed cunningham also had his helmet off for the longhorns james good may be through for the afternoon his backup cory mayfield a guy that leads the sooners in quarterback sacks but if they lose good that's bad for ou boy he's a very good football player and you pointed it out exactly right because there it is the personal foul i thought the year he came out of high school he was the best defensive end in the state of texas got tangled up with cunningham took that helmet off they didn't waste any time he's gone they did give him the thumb james good is out of the contest so scratch him this game not even two minutes old we told you about the emotion of this game you've seen it firsthand boston all of that was a gain and an excellent block by miller dwayne miller did a tremendous job giving his teammates some room to run up front [Applause] the fake to samuels throwing on the fly past completed johnny walker he's forced out of bounds by charles franks but not after a pickup of about 11 on the play walker's a very smooth athlete here they come with boot action guardiere has been perfect in the early going there's the boot there's the toss walker who is a parade all-american makes it look easy he's also a baseball player for cliff gustafsson at the university of texas franks will have his hands full today he is playing in the place of ken mcmitchell who was hurt in the oklahoma state game last week jason burleson now in at fullback for the longhorns the pitch back to samuels he trips over his own blocker he tripped over stan thomas as he came up to the line of scrimmage not much doing there oklahoma had to play well covered simple toss you mentioned burleson i saw him in the colorado game he was a tight end and had some problems tubbs got hurt i incorrectly called his number somebody is wearing that burleson's come a long way about six foot five big kid for a fullback tied in quarterback's done a lot winfred tubbs back in now for the longhorns tub slipped in the tub earlier this week broke a cheekbone but they said if they could get a helmet on him he would play and here he is guardier to pass again straight back lots of time and the receiver wide open pass is caught by samuels cory mayfield on the stop but another first down as they'll move the chains the ball now on a 20-yard line there are five zones that you must defend and you can't do that when you rush five people and samuels drifts into the open area of the zone longhorns keep it going that injury you're talking about the tubs that was the boys will be boys thing and it ended up badly for him absolutely david mcwilliams the head coach of the longhorn said please you're kidding me trainer said no i wish i were burleson burrells ahead for about four frank blevins the strong side linebacker there to meet him at the 16. dave he's on the track team that start has really improved he was a scout team quarterback a year ago he throws the javelin he throws the shot but they do work on starts you can see it's paid off burlson recruited as a quarterback at 6'5-230 you see the longhorns both on offense and defense with their two and two record those numbers pretty much add up garnier again has all kinds of time he finds his receiver across the middle that's the tight end carrie cash a little drag pattern for carrie cash out of holmes high school in san antonio the big play in this drive was gardeer scramble if you're wondering why carrie cash has his full name written out on his uniform it's because he has a twin brother keith cash who also plays on this team guard here now 404 for 38 yards this youngster really looks like a excellent quarterback for the longhorns first and goal from the eight samuel stopped at the six does that blevins punch a ticket or does he punch a ticket that's as tough a motor scooter as we've got playing college football number 35 6-4 228 and watch him stick chris samuels what's the line of scrimmage here dave samuels lowers up and oh does he take a look they say in a texas o.u game the hits are harder you can almost hear that one way up here on the sixth floor in the press box for the end zone touchdown tony jones all right pick it up man-to-man at the goal line frank's is pressing jones hadn't cut that many passes cut four last week but in the push the press as they call it quarterback can't handle it and jones gets the university of texas on the board with 102 left in the corner for jones all southwest conference the last two years that's his first touchdown reception this year clements with the point after it's good he's 12 of 12 this year and with 1002 left to go in the first quarter the texas longhorns lead the oklahoma sooners seven to nothing [Music] everyone thought herb this might be a defensive struggle between these two outstanding defensive teams but that was an impressive 80 yard drive for the longhorn really was garter comes out and i just believe that third down play gave him so much confidence you could see him swagger back to the huddle he looked terrific are you getting close to the dividing line now those people are happy you go to the other side of the 50 they're not happy at all bob barry which side are you on right now on that sideline the oh you or the texas babe i'm on the texas sideline i'm in front of the oklahoma crowd though and they are shocked about the first drive i checked on what happened to james good and apparently the oklahoma defensive end took off his helmet and swung it at number 72 ed cunningham and he's been ejected from the game and it's double trouble for the sooners because james goods back up tracy gordon is out of this game due to injury so corey mayfield the freshman is forced to play the rest of the way clements will boot it left footed otis taylor and ike and juelle brewer are back deep that's brewer he's got lightning speed he trips over the 25-yard line and then is smothered at the 28. we talked about how effective that scoring drive was for the longhorns there it was 11 plays 80 yards under five minutes guardia with a touchdown pass and for guardier that is his third touchdown pass of the year so the sooner start at the 29-yard line first and 10 for ous they'll try to get on the scoreboard and the i formation the pitch is to goddess not much room around the right side in fact maybe a loss of one rocky allen makes the stop team collins gets his third straight start for the sooners zinc got his chance when steve collins no relation broke a finger against the baylor bears and when chris nelson was ineffective against arizona mike gaddis is uncomfortable being called the franchise but when you rush for 274 yards you earned that nickname candice will run behind the blocks of senior right tackle mark van kiersbelk at 6-2-270 he can open up some holes a loss of one it's second and 11. the pitch again to goddess trying to get outside a flag on the play a pickup of about nine or ten we'll see what the flag is about this will go against the university of oklahoma with the clip so the big gain by gaddis will be called back the defensive front is the strength of the longhorns big ken hackamack is still growing at 6 10 and 3.05 unfortunately for mr collins he loves to rush the quarterback brian jones mans the middle for the longhorns this lubbock native is back home in texas after a stint at ucla the secondary of the longhorns is young and led by their top gun lancegun a redshirt freshman with two quarterback sacks and an interception the penalty moves the ball back to the 16-yard line where it's second and 23 from the power eye the pitch again to gaddis mattis met at the 20-yard line then stopped at the 23. stanley richard the first one to get there short side option and it shows you the respect oklahoma has for texas forget texas record you've got another penalty down there they don't think they can run straight at them [Applause] this one's going to go against the longhorns the sooner crowd is happy or perhaps a late hit on gaddis well in a game like this with this much emotion you've got to expect penalties like this especially early on as both teams running so much on adrenaline brian jones whistled for the personal foul with the yardage also another first down for the oklahoma sooners automatically at the 38 yard line 8 42 left to go in the opening stanza the longhorns drove 80 yards for their touchdown as soon sooners with the ball for the first time [Applause] status has been the whole story and look out he's gone 62 yards wow [Applause] with plays like that you know why they call him the franchise here's the trap well done strengthen the formations left gaddis runs right up the middle cut to the outside he's got as good of peripheral vision as anybody in the country he just runs away from very outstanding call the trap block was effective you got a man who can just flat fly in gaps r.d lasher's been perfect on the extra points this year for oklahoma that one also good ties the score 25 of 25 for rd lasher and we are deadlocked at 7 with 8 22 left to go and the opening stanza wow what a start to the texas oklahoma rivalry and or perhaps the key play of that drive for the sooners was the penalty against brian jones the personal foul that gave oklahoma first down that's a very good point watch the trap block here it is pays off leads up into the hole and gaddis just does the rest of it this guy is something else look at the hips just a southpaw gonna be around a long time big eight newcomer of the year he just runs away from everybody once he gets behind the secondary he's gone no one's gonna catch him goddess had an 80-yard 84-yard touchdown last week against oklahoma state he's picking up right where he left off and gandis at this point in his career is uh second as far as ou is concerned with this many games under his belt as far as his yardage he's just totally been outstanding and now that he's playing in the i formation nerve gattus even stronger gaddis played in the eye in high school he wanted to go to southern cal for a while decided to stay close to home he's from midwest city oklahoma he said well i'll play the wishbone well they changed the wishbone to the eye mostly for mike gaddis riddell kicks off at the goal line samuels bobbles it to the 12 and that's it an effective scoring drive for the oklahoma sooners aided in part by the personal foul on brian jones and then the 62 yard touchdown run just three plays 71 yards important for the sooners to strike back quickly on the longhorns uh texas took their breath away for just a second samuel spins away from one would be tackler but then met by tom backus wilson actually made the first hit he doesn't hold on but he just disrupts the play chris wilson out of richardson high school i'll tell you something guy can play he's paid his dues i like his enthusiasm he's a good high school full-back that touchdown by the longhorns the first score on the sooners sooners had not given up a touchdown in the first quarter that was my point so far this year the longhorn scored on them gardeer again back to throw lots of time airmail's won it was intended for johnny walker incomplete that's excuse me intended for tony jones they had a defensive end that is drop off and give some help underneath and that zone looked very very good not a lot of gaps in that one defensively the sooners have really been stifling their opponents just 211 yards total yards against them so far this season per game you got to counter oklahoma look for jones on a reverse when the time is appropriate and everything it's just very difficult to run wide against him the thought is the secondary is young and maybe a little inexperienced but they've played steady for ou this year guardia again back to throw he's getting time he's got it to carry cash and carry cash carries it up to the 30-yard line terry ray stopped him he didn't have the first down just does a great job breaking loose it looked like jason belser is going to make the play it would have been a couple of yards short looking stay in a pocket for a freshman kid has great poise there's the hit by belcer unable to hold on and carry cash out of san antonio picks up the first down you have all sorts of thoughts running through your head herb when you get any name like carrie cash like okay i'll burn my credit cards we're going to carry cash or you can sing like johnny cash fumble oklahoma's recovered adrian walker coughed it up and oklahoma is pulling on the football they'll get it at the 34-yard line i think the hip ghost of franks will try and pick it up either franks or dixon dixon recover the fumble terry ray makes the hit all right here let's pick it up toss sweet turn it up field they actually had a little yardage going there's a hit by franks does a great job kicking it loose and then all sorts of white shirts around it 6 53 left to go in the first quarter we're tied at 7. [Applause] oklahoma fumbles the exchange leon perry the fullback falls on it just scored it on through like a greased pig and now the sooners out second down and 14 with the 37. [Applause] the pitch to goddess ahead up to the 27 yard line gonna bring up third and five anthony curl finally makes the stop but collins with the nice effort to get rid of the football did a great job dave the strong side of the field as we take a look at the the tail of the tape there there's some big folks out there they can't quite touch that hakamak though well hackamac really will ruin the curve won't he 610 305 that will get your front-line statistics out there in a hurry there's a penalty flag as goddess goes around the right side shuffles inside the 20 down to the 18 let's see what the flag's about the legal procedure called against the sooners break for the longhorns it's third down and nine yards to go the ball at the 32 collins on the option to gaddis he was pinned in there for a while and then they get him way short of the first down they get it to maybe the 30 but anthony curl and graylin johnson there to make sure that he didn't have much room to run mark steed was the guy that really spread things out he did watch 87 mark steed steve doesn't run well and he's no match for gaddis but he is able to string it out there's steed and by stringing it out he gets some help from his friends rd lasher will come on and try a field goal this will be a 48-yard attempt as long this year 49. it's up and it is no good off to the left only the second missed for artie lasher so the longhorns hold and we're still tied at 7. 4 21 left to go in the first quarter the longhorns will be on the attack when we come back to the cotton bowl in just a moment herb brown and bob berry i'm dave armstrong back at the cotton bowl we're tied at seven texas took their opening drive when 80 yards peter gardeire with a six yard touchdown pass to tony jones texas on the attack again wayne dixon make sure that one goes nowhere texas makes a mistake but make no mistake about it wayne dixon is an outstanding player he breaks through [Music] there's the miss right there and wayne dixon does a great job he had that pick against gundy in the oklahoma state game a year ago he can run for dixon his fourth quarterback sack of the year that's a loss of eight second and 18. the ball back now at the 23-yard line max was split for the longhorns a little flare pattern not to walker that's adrian walker the redshirt freshman who picks up about four or five on the play but tom backus was their offensive worker sooner adrian walker 151 yards versus rice last week two ways to look at that rice owl game for the longhorns one why did they play rice that closely well rice really played an excellent football game the other way to look at it if you're texas is hey we really came back showed a lot of courage in that fourth quarter and something we can build on nothing to build on there though as the sooners come flying in dixon and bacchus were there to stop that one dead gardener sacked for the second time and the second time in a row they just overpowered walker watch dixon so much bigger just throws them aside like a little paper bag comes in and makes the play and texas must punt taylor at his own 45-yard line lil jadal an outstanding punter a high punt pushes taylor back to his 32. the book football is loose and this is going to be a break for the longhorns number 52 michael padgett picks it up and goes in for the score and it's legal the ball was in the air it was not on the ground the ball just squirts loose and the university of texas has taken the lead a 44-yard return michael padgett johnny on the spot watch this the ball just squirts loose it's in the air right there's the hit he's one of his own men and patch it he's got in the left arm just like you spoke you know it looks like he was getting ready to spike it at the 30. instead he takes it in what a turnaround the first real big break of the game the longhorns had fumbled earlier but oklahoma could not capitalize longhorn certainly capitalized there padgett had to go right into his arms and he goes 44 yards for the score he's had a bad knee has been in trouble for two years clement's kick is blocked now he's going to try to pass it in and they get it [Applause] curtis thrift the tight end gets it how about that for being alert that rule changed a couple of years ago it isn't over until it's over as yogi berra used to say dave i have not seen that since the rule changed you talk about the bounces going the longhorns way that one right back into the arms of wayne clement what a nice touch on the pass to curtis griff wow well at some rides on a punt the ball squirts loose and tangent out of beaumont texas runs it in they've got an extra point blocked the bounce is perfect they throw it into the end zone and it works out better for they got an eight point lead instead of seven well they say sometimes that pigskin takes a funny hop not if you're a longhorn [Applause] let's take a look again as otis taylor comes flying up see who hits otis i thought it was a white shirt it is a white shirt he was laying a block on a texas kid and here's paget now watch him switch it to the left hand [Applause] [Music] i'll tell you that's a happy guy [Applause] [Music] brewer at the 12. and then at the 25. as soon as we'll go back on the attack and now if oh you should score you got to feel like they're going to try to go for two as well but that's certainly premature right now as oklahoma has a long way to go 75 yards well it's interesting to catch the reactions er at one half in red they're stunned right now and the half in orange they couldn't be happier problem is 32 still a tailback he can go the length of the field right now [Applause] he's done it once already a 62-yard touchdown run for mike goddess this is ike lewis though in the contest for ou and he has stopped short of the line of scrimmage by brian jones well this is a transfer from ucla and they don't give number 60 out just to be nice this guy can play counter gap this is the play the washington redskins made so famous but they don't fill the backside that's a good hit by jones if he was coming all the way on a dog orb you talk about that number 60 being so special for the longhorns and it really is tommy nobis wore that number back in 63 through 65 and it's a number they generally give to their top linebacker team collins wanted to throw at least it appeared like he did he is sacked for no gain by oscar giles that's his fifth quarterback sack of the year they really do a good job in the secondary collins tries to run up top and texas will have no part of it looked like they had lost their rushing lanes and that wasn't the case collins didn't stay back in the pocket very long it was hard to determine whether he really was trying to throw there or maybe just a drop back and he was going to run with it certainly giles was there to stop any plans the ou sooners had and it's third down and 11 yards to go this time collins will pass he wants to go long pass overthrown for artie guess guess was covered by two longhorns mark perry in on the coverage for texas and now the sooners will be forced to punt for the first time that's the play that we saw him run effectively against kansas around a post for a touchdown this time doesn't work out what's interesting michael padgett suffered a knee injury in 1987 in this ball game he missed a year and a half and is that something the kid runs in for a touchdown sooner is hoping to get as fortunate as the longhorns were on the last punt brad riddell will put it away a 42 yard average this sort of a wobbly kick that will hit at the 35 and now samuels will let it go boy you're not kidding that took a big ou bounce and it's going to be down near the 10-yard line [Music] a 66-yard punt has a longhorn starting at their own 10-yard line pass way overthrown for johnny walker a little bit too much mustard on that one for 60 yards once again though of samuels feeling that punt texas has had horrible field position three of their four possessions and no different right here they came with the poop pass that has been effective for him just doesn't click this time this should be the last play of the first quarter just six seconds to go in this opening stanza that has been an absolute wild thing from the cotton bowl our score 15-7 in favor of the longhorns samuels wants to run not much doing there a pickup of a couple but that's about it scott evans makes the stop as the first quarter comes to a close at the end of 15 minutes of play the longhorn surprising the oklahoma sooners 15-7 [Applause] [Music] second quarter just about ready to start if it's anything like the first stay tuned texas leads 15-7 bob berry is down on the sidelines bob you have been witness to one of the most amazing first quarters in this rivalry well it's always been a crazy series dave so nothing is new and a guy that knows a lot about oklahoma texas is danny bradley former oklahoma quarterback started two of these games in 1983 and 84. danny what are your recollection of bellevue texas this is about like all of them isn't it you betcha i asked my wife last night i i was up at 3 a.m and i woke up and said what's the problem she said danny it's texas oh you weekend so i rushed over to make sure i get in and get a sideline pass and i can be a part of the action peter gardeire scrambling for texas getting a few yards now you played quarterback i hate to bring this up on the last ou team that lost the oklahoma texas game back in 1983 what do you remember without that game well it was 84 and we tied 15 15. we had the controversy interception in the end zone with keith stanberry and we felt that we won the football game and i guess next week's in the poll uh we were ranked number one and i think we jumped up a couple of notches so this is always a big weekend for the the oklahoma texas people and i'm excited to be here all right we're good seeing you good luck in your career here in dallas danny bradley former oklahoma quarterback david herb all right thanks a lot this is the 22. 84th meeting between these two clubs [Applause] pass caught by samuels out of the backfield a pickup of about seven or eight on the play up to the 30 chris wilson frank blevins the linebacker sandwich him there samuels has got some move good hands he'll make good decisions on his cuts what's the decision he makes after he catches the ball gets a good block right here because guardier there's samuel makes a good decision i like the way he settles into the zone he's talking about tradition i heard the seven key words last night if you do that you're going to jail out in front of the hotel they do have a good time here that's burlson another first down for the longhorns they'll move the chains again dante williams and scott evans there defensively but not after burlson got about three on the play interesting attack for lynn amity the offensive coordinator let's mix things up on the scramble where guardian runs up the middle they go without a running back as they sent the single back burleson in motion they had five people wide lynn amity has really changed the focus of this offensive attack for the longhorns coming over from texas a m and he's really an outstanding job getting more points on the board for texas the key for amity watch the left tackle he must have a good one watch cunningham operate he's got a great one in cunningham that's winfred tubbs he spins ahead for about three or four on the play bring up second down and six is it tough to get a crease against oklahoma though and it's always been that way everybody talks about the texas program turning out great defensive tackles how about oklahoma boy they stand you up i think the guys like tony casillas who is recently here and now look at the front line of backus and williams and scott evans and james good who's no longer in this contest and we'll see what we're going to talk about what kind of story that will be for ou corey mayfield taking his place wayne dixon also outstanding up front samuels gets outside across midfield with a 45. nice run by chris samuels jason kelser had to stop him out of his strong safety position and if belser doesn't get him he's gone watch this he runs so tough on chart yardage but he turns it into something that almost breaks only one man prevents sandals from scoring [Music] let's watch the left tackle we've been talking about cunningham i just think he's an outstanding player see what kind of job he does ed cunningham has got the good size people feel he's going to be an outstanding prospect he missed a lot of uh last year because of a bad knee he's got some leadership ability too curtis govan also an outstanding block to spring that play loose it's a freshman dancing around a red shirt and he danced backwards adrian walker loses ground stacey dillard got him after a loss of about seven on the play he who hesitates his loss against oklahoma they just run too well to the football watch as there is no place to go no way out that movie with kevin costner should have just taken his lumps right there and lost a yard chris wilson the linebacker who came up and really spread that thing out 11 55 left to go there you see the size difference for the offense of the longhorns and the defense of the sooners pretty close although the defensive front a little bit lighter gardier wants to throw pass intended for johnny walker off his fingertips incomplete see if the sooners come with any kind of a blitz an obvious passing situation third and 15. [Applause] there's dixon the first to get him and then smothered by dante williams dixon is so good he became a regular after the third game in 88 because we've all felt that dante williams has an opportunity to be a star there's a guy with positive though nixon actually forces his knee to go down so it's a punting situation perfection the sooners have made a change otis taylor was returning the punch this time it's greg to crazy but he doesn't have a chance to get his hands on the football as the punt of bobby little jedi goes into the end zone the sooners will start their attack on the 20-yard line handed a note by the southwest conference the first touchdown by an swc player since october 1986 baylor's keith rose ran a fumble back 45 yards so it doesn't happen too often i thought you looked that up yourself no no not that smart kid bill little the five publishers the university of texas we have to give it gary gibbs in his first year head coach of the sooners you know gibson no stranger to this rivalry in fact in gibbs last year as a sooner linebacker texas running back earl campbell laid a forearm on gibson and then i almost put him six feet under he said i was just glad it was astro turf because i've never been real turf i might have gone under the pitch on the carpet texas has it the pitch never really came close to gaddis and falling on the football number 43 todd ringo this is a freshman decision tink collins who took the job over university of kansas game we saw him in his first one right here on prime there's the toss and it's just an errant one gaddis does his best but on department it's going to bounce anywhere look how hungry texas is let's see if lynn amity tries to hit him quick here dave he'll have to play action right out of the chute it's tough to run against this outfit longhorns have the ball at the 12 yard line already leading 15 to 7. [Applause] the pitch to samuels well that was strung out well by the oklahoma sooners jason beltzer from his strong safety position number 29 makes this stop loss of one on the play second and eleven cardier has been outstanding when given the time sacko for the fifth time this afternoon chris wilson from his linebacker position a texas native out of richardson makes the stop and a big one it was it jumps the ball back to the 25. no time man coverage look at oklahoma come up front coverage was tremendous and wilson on the dog makes the big play ten minutes exactly to go in the first half and the clock is running cardio scrambling as time puts it up too far he had tony jones that was six if he could have laid it in there throwing it on the run off the wrong foot though that's tough that is tony jones was in the end zone and open but the pass a little bit too long from garter that particular set where they go trips left has not been good for texas they've had a tough time giving gardeer time to throw the football long field goal coming up that's a field goal of 42 yards for wayne clements who's had his problems from the field goal uh situation this year just five of nine he hit a 50-yarder though against smu so he certainly has the leg to do it he had one extra point block that turned out good for the longhorns that one almost blocked it is up and it is good that was good by 20 yards boy i'll say charles frank's the guy that almost got in and blocked it for the sooners but nothing doing in texas comes away with three more points they lead 18 to seven we'll step aside we'll be back to the cotton bowl in just a moment [Music] texas surprising 15 15th ranked oklahoma 18-7 here in the second quarter with 9 39 left to go in the opening half brian clements will kick off for the longhorns back deep for the sooners brewer and otis taylor [Applause] from the near hash mark clements the left footer it's a short kick brewer at the 12 drops the football then he just falls on it smart play by the freshman dewell brewer out of lawton oklahoma after he lost the handle don't try to get too fancy just make sure you don't lose it again dave i think one of the neat things being here there's so many other things going on around here with the rides and all the exhibits and everything i mean you can make a day out of this you get lost it's like a city you can just see the heat rising from the astroturf here at the cotton bowl well there is a lot to do around here to give to the fullback leon perry dives forward for a couple anthony scott they're going to make the stop after a pickup of about three it'll be second and seven really been waiting for oklahoma to go to their fullback game that softens him up has been pretty much gatis and everybody's keying on him you can change things if you'll uh hit quickly with leon perry he's got the very good first step long goes in motion gaddis oh is he hit rocky allen real name rockne named after newt rockne what a big play no speech necessary there rocky allen with a big hit let's pick it up from ground level well newt rockne would have been proud of this any football coach loves noise and they love contact you get both right here as rocky allen lays a major league hit out there he's a high school fullback third and long for the sooners not what they like not a passing team third and eight look out here come the longhorn mark steed and ken hackemack [Applause] one of the things we talked about at the top of the show is make oklahoma pass that was texas strategy there it is collins goes back oh look at the strength of alan and the pocket just collapses nice effort by the texas longhorns again for the sooners he got off one over 60 yards this one is going to bounce again again it takes an oklahoma bounce strategy seems to be working it rolls down at the 36 yard line we're going to step aside with 405 left to go in the first half and the sooners are being surprised by the longhorns [Music] with herb brown and bob berry i'm dave armstrong back at the cotton ball texas leading the oklahoma sooners 18-7 [Applause] adrian walker on the game wayne dixon on the stop a pickup of about six on the play peter gardier back in at quarterback for the texas longhorns bob berry has the inside story as to what's going on there bob today from what i was able to gather they just want to play donovan ford's today in fact they assured him during the week that he would see lots of time against oklahoma regardless of the game situation and as i explained earlier gardeer had a couple of opportunities there and had some tough passing problems after they recovered the fumble recently he's back in now maybe he was just scolded i haven't found that out but they do plan on playing forbes also to keep you in check with what's going on around the big 8 conference we have confirmed that colorado's eric the enemy broke his leg in a game against iowa state today and he's possibly out for the season that's unfortunate for the colorado buffalos making a run at a big a championship perhaps and they're looking even farther to a national championship they're playing at iowa state today that is bad news they lost oc oliver earlier in the in the week they've got another guy though not too bad j.j flanagan flanagan the senior will have to do the job now instead of the enemy this is a freshman winford tubbs a true freshman the longhorn starting to play power football now down to the sooner 40-yard line there's a guy who got hurt in the shower look at this run all of a sudden they're starting to get a seam up front that hadn't happened at all until this drive you know the one thing that texas wants to do is keep the football the rest of the half and with effort like that that's very possible clock is moving under three minutes now 250 and the clock running in the first half walker met behind the line of scrimmage nice play defensively by scott evans well you mentioned at the beginning that uh scott evans hadn't had a count of year he wants to have it i'll guarantee it this he's still got the great respect around the not only the big eight in the country and of course his coach wasn't too bad lucius selman that's a pretty good defensive lineman i guess so scott evans a little bit miffed that more of the sooner's opponents aren't running his way well when you got a guy that's an all-america candidate you tend to go the other way but no bargain there as bacchus and dixon are on that side for the sooners gardeire now he wants to run the official might have helped out there as he got in the way and guardier picks up about seven on the play down to the 34. what did you call that watch the empire robert holliday that's the best block bob's probably thrown since his high school days here it is can't find an open receiver scrambles up the middle runs right at the striped shirt and then cuts inside that's not bad i knew those strikes were worth something did you dave that's right chris wilson was the guy being blocked by the official wilson couldn't get between the official and gardeer frank blevins is the guy that's hobbled right now for ou he's on his feet and that's a good sign for the sooners well hopefully he comes back because if you just joined us james goode was kicked out of this football game the third play of the game he got very upset pulled his headgear off and took a swipe at ed cunningham now cunningham had his helmet off too but didn't apparently didn't throw that helmet all right watch uh play one more time as we mentioned holiday is the umpire and guardiere runs right at him and then cuts it up you know makes a tackle downfield but it's a third long three four or first nothing you can do as an official you're part of the football field and uh certainly not critical of the official being in the way that just happens in football from time to these guys time so fast sometimes it's very difficult to get out of their way well what they tell you is just stand still let the receiver or i should say let them run about do his thing if you move he'll move with you ball's at the 34-yard line it's third down and four the longhorns need to get it just past the 30-yard line for another first down the sooner crowd on hand this a neutral sight a three and a half hour drive for the folks from austin and for the folks from norman see if the offensive line gets off the mark again they've been doing a good job third down walker the lone back walker trying to find the 30 he's going to be stopped short that'll be interesting do they go for it on fourth down or do they try to kick the long field goal dave i really believe you go on three on the play stanley richard around a little bit let's see what they choose to do here they choose to call a timeout bevo the mascot of the texas longhorns 121 left to go clements is going to kick the field goal here irv they're not going to try to draw anyone offside bebo just kind of chilling out here yeah he's uh he can't worry about anything he don't have any stress he's going to live a lot longer than all of us you know how many uh first downs oklahoma has two that's exactly right is that incredible no i knew that's right oh you knew that i don't see i thought you had come up with that i'd like to think i know everything but i know that's not true i just happen to know that because i got expert help here between ron franklin and david little the statisticians working with me today and i thank them for their help along with spotter bobby little a 49-yard field goal attempt wayne clemons it's up and it's good and that was good by 15 yards [Applause] [Music] [Applause] wow a 42-yard field goal and a 49-yard field goal and both cleared the uprights by plenty they've always had some great kickers down here in the southwest commonwealth that ball exploded and i'm looking for win i don't see that much this has been clements game hasn't it two long field goals and then the pass for the two-point conversion well oklahoma's got three timeouts left they want to get something going drilling by 14. otis taylor the guy that fumbled the punt this time keeps his hands on the football doesn't run into any of his own players and gets it up to the 24-yard line you want to get the ball in gatta's hands crowd will want him to throw but gaddis is the guy who's capable of making something happen everybody will tell you you know you got to throw but if you don't throw effectively go with what is good for you that's gaddis you wonder if the longhorns though will be keying on number 32 of oklahoma will that make it tougher for him to get any big yards look at this defense they got people back to midfield gaddis through the middle puts both hands on the football a first down they'll stop the clock to move the change the ball across the 35 to the 37. see i think this is where ball clubs get hurt against oklahoma by playing that victory defense ou wants to run the football it just lets a guy like gaddis get into the secondary and he's got extra operating room because the db's are so deep from their own first and ten from the 37 for ou clock is under one minute now in the first half again the pitch back to gaddis smothered behind the line of scrimmage by james patton boy he looked like general patton on that play let's get an injury update from bob berry dave frank blevins oklahoma's leading tackler went out of the game on the last series with a hyper extended back and they do not yet know whether or not he will return that combined with the loss of james good and this game is turning sour for oklahoma trailing 21-7 they lost good on the third play of the game to a penalty that i'm sure he feels bad about he hit someone with this helmet he was kicked out of the game the sooners have taken a time out to talk things over here with 40 seconds to go jim donovan is the offensive coordinator and see what he comes up with i thought jim was going to take the north carolina job that's not jim right there thought he was going to take the north carolina job he's from that area tink collins getting the instructions real name fred you wonder why does he go by tink well he doesn't like to admit this but when he was young saint collins his mother called him a little stinker well they changed that to tinker and then he went to school and he was called tinker stinker and things like that so he asked everybody would you please just call me tink and that name has stuck ever since we see the things we learned watching prime network 40 seconds to go second and 12 for the sooners at their own 35-yard line again the pitch to goddess oh he's elusive he gets it almost up to midfield they're going to stop the clock to move the chains again they're going to move it up to the oklahoma 48-yard line brian jones and todd ringo on the stop i like the call once again by donald trump when you have a secondary that deep let that gas operate again the pitch to gattis trying to bust it inside down to the 35. this guy's going to get him in field goal position doing it on his own off of simple toss sweeps and once again it's a three-man rush eight people are back very very deep and then you let this guy operate he's got him down to the 35-yard line everybody expects them to throw they don't throw effectively go with your strength now goddess comes over to the sideline gaddis 12 carries 120 yards already the big play the 62-yard touchdown run last week 274 yards against oklahoma state well just like all the heisman trophy winners the barry sanders the billy sims you know they always have a day like that it seems and uh this guy really shows me something you know you're you're down in tulsa you hear a lot about him he can play it's as simple as that it's the sophomore mike gaddis checks out now [Applause] one time out left now dave they've got to really utilize what they're doing here and be very intelligent not quite in field goal range this would be about a 52-yarder from here into the wind they need to get about five or ten more yards on the option lewis loses the football they're going to rule it down right into the hands of oscar giles giles went down in a knee i believe giles if he had not gone down on his knee would have scored that ball was in the air just like packets boy the ball is certainly falling into the longhorns hands giles again right there but his knee went down on the play the pitch back to ike lewis let's watch it again all right they come with the counter option get it out there very quick hard toss right down no question about it that was a hard toss so tink without a lot of touch texas is going to go in unless something strange happens with a 14-point lead i look for him to run the football here david mcwilliams has to be thrilled he's an 18-point underdog he's up by 14. single back option here to burlson they do run the football and oklahoma will let the clock run out a pickup of a couple but that's it and texas will go into the locker room at the end of the first half leading 21-7 [Music] a 14-point lead for the longhorns an upset in the making here at the cotton bowl texas coming in with a record of two and two trying to upset the sooners who are ranked number 15 in the country david mcwilliams has got to be thrilled with what's going on so far as the sooners have won four in a row between these two clubs and gibbs has his team the head coach of the sooners at 4-1 so far this year the oklahoma sooners coming into this game a 17-point favorite but right now they trail by 14 as they head to the locker rooms here to end the first half the longhorns scored first an 80 yard touchdown play bob berry is down now with david mcwilliams the head coach of the longhorns david you have to be happy with a tremendous half especially the opening drive that got you out quickly well i am but this is a 60 minute game and you can't ever count oklahoma out any football game because they're going to come back in the second half we got 30 minutes more to play in this football game are you surprised by the amount of turnovers that oklahoma has come up with so far well we both had some turnovers that changed the momentum a little bit but i think maybe our defense was causing some of them and quickly why did you put in donovan ford for the forbes of that one series well it's hot out here is a little winded so we want to get him a little blow that's like in the second half david mcwilliams his team leading 21-7 at halftime all right we're going to step aside here at the cotton bowl we'll come back and let you know how things stacked up statistically through the first 30 minutes of play we'll be back the sooners are being surprised by the longhorn with bob barry ander brown i'm dave armstrong back at the cotton bowl and uh this is more than a game this really becomes an event between the oklahoma sooners and the texas longhorns as the longhorns get their final instructions they'll kick off to start the second half here oklahoma comes out of the locker room and you know they've got fire in their eyes down by 14. as we start here the second half oklahoma will get their hands on the football first actually not oklahoma will kick off oklahoma at their back well they deferred and they had the option they could have received to start the second half instead they wanted the wind at their back in the third quarter and so they are kicking off surprising tactic here you know their defense has socked him in three times in that first half i'm just uh convinced gary gibbs thinks they can do it again well maybe that's it maybe gibbs feels like his defense is playing better than his offense and he wants to try to stop the longhorns and create maybe some sort of a turnover adrian walker and chris samuels back deep awaiting the kickoff from the oklahoma sooners brad riddell [Applause] this one goes out of bounds they'll have to redo things dave trying to look over on the oklahoma bench to see who's warming up but nobody's throwing because they don't throw that much but it's gonna be interesting to see if gary gibbs goes with tink collins chris nelson might be a possibility we've talked even about steve collins apparently the injuries are right now well he practiced this week for oklahoma they don't know if he's ready to go yet but he did take some snaps in practice this week the feeling was that if pressed into duty maybe but i don't think you'll see steve collins want to redo things a five-yard penalty will push it back to the 30 where riddell will kick off as you scan the sooner sidelines melson wears 17 team collins 9. the double jeopardy for the sooners it was both offsides and the kick went out of bounds so either way it's still a five-yard penalty [Music] riddell will kick off again again what light wind there is at the cotton ball will be at the back of the sooners wind blowing only about five to ten miles per hour there's a look at chris samuels he had an outstanding first half [Applause] long kick samuels decides to down it in the end zone that was a boomer from brad riddell resetting things offensively for the texas longhorns again peter gardeire at quarterback chris samuels in the backfield along with jason burlson there's guardian the redshirt freshman in a good first half briefly donovan forbes played for the longhorns but that was as david mcwilliams said just to give gardeira a blow as it's very warm down there let's see gardeer statistically in that first half first and ten longhorns from the 20. walker pickup of six little flare pass to johnny walker charles franks makes the stop the same play that they open the game up with here they go fake the run quick little hitch safe pass picks up the little yardage you know we talked at the top about mayfield how many sacks he has i believe five going into the game now playing the entire game unofficially i don't have him for any makes a lot of difference when you have those fresh legs and you can come in for a good instead of playing for good the entire half wayne dixon has been the guy and putting most of the pressure on for ou adrian walker falls forward for a couple of yards chris wilson there stopping him defensively oh you will come at you from the front line of wayne dixon tom backus dante williams scott evans and again corey mayfield playing in the place of james good two guys you're very aware of today for oklahoma on defense are wilson and evans and blevins is in the contest we talked about his hyper extended back as he went into the locker room but number 35 for ou is playing third down and three cardier to throw complete first down pass caught by samuels up to the 34-yard line chris wilson there defensively to make sure it goes no further got a great job pass protection all the time todd smith the center really got a little martial arts going up there that's all it is up front anyway it's war it's martial arts ever since i went to the lockout where you can extend your hands it's totally changed the game with football now much to smile about if you're a sooner fan right now as ou is trailing texas [Applause] 21-7. winford tubbs maybe one chris wilson again there defensively winford tubbs a true freshman adrian walker a redshirt freshman peter gardier a redshirt freshman all starting in the backfield chris samuels alone guy with experience back there he's a junior texas now is going up front with patrick mcfarland at center jeff boyd he's pretty good football player boyd is into the guard now number 58 good player [Applause] second and nine the ball to the 35 in motion that's burlson gardier with a pass back to walker walker strays inbounds and then goes out of bounds good for another first down up to the 44-yard line jason belser and terry ray forced him out that thing was almost picked off watch 46. mayfield i thought he had a pick right there instead something very positive yardage-wise for the university of texas [Music] he gets his hands on that one he's got nothing but the end zone to stop him and that's the kind of break the sooners are looking for right now texas got all the breaks at least it seemed in that first half a blocked extra point that was good for a two-point conversion after they picked it up and threw it in and then a punt that was fumbled and picked up and ran in guardier again but he can scramble switches the ball around the quasi makes the stop for the sooners carrie cash the tight end has a great comeback block and this lets gardeer scramble for a little bit of yardage cash keeps the block up high or you're looking at a cartilage on the knee watch 19 after the scramble starts this is going to be no game but number 19 cash is going to make a block right there boom a little bit of yardage for peter garder thanks to carrie cash pickup of a couple second and seven now the ball three yards shy of midfield [Applause] on the option first time the option play is run and walker steps out of bounds after a pickup of maybe just one and now dillard may be whistled for some unnecessary contact after the whistle stacey dillard they sophomore out of clarksville texas with some extracurricular activity well you got to keep your poise in this situation your best tackler in football by far is the boundary and that's who makes the tackle here for the university of oklahoma texas clapping their hands apparently that's going to go against the sooners dillard claiming that his contact was not the initial contact it was retaliatory well this should go both ways in and that's the way the official saw it honey has been called against texas followed by a dead ball personal foul against oklahoma we've got the replay i don't think you'll see the penalty short side option and here's the uh here's the tackle the out of bounds the boundary the best offense by far into the boundary is the wishbone offsetting penalties so we'll redo things second and seven again the ball will remain at the 47-yard line well now they're gonna march a little bit because this is a dead ball foul that's my mistake so it's an automatic first down that's right the personal foul makes it the first down for the texas longhorns they'll move the chain now with the ball right at midfield it turns out it was just a three yard penalty after they walked off the holding call then they walk off the personal foul and they give the longhorns the automatic first down half the fans love it that man and the other half don't blevins on the stop frank blevins you got to feel like he's in pain every time he makes a hit now with a hyper-extended back he gets up slowly after stopping adrian walker once again though they're able to get a little bit of a seam on that left side pick it up now watch this because they hadn't been able to run at all in the first quarter blevins who will stick you has to come up make the tackle walker now 12 carries 35 yards it's second and six the ball inside sooner territory now oklahoma surprising they could have received the football to start the second half they chose to kick off and have the wind at their back in the third quarter so far that strategy has paid off for texas they got the ball up to 20 and they have marched across midfield now take too much time here went with four wideouts trying to get man coverage instead they got zone and they look like they might have had something going over here on the right side they just take too much time you got to be careful too with texas lynn amity is the reputation of always throwing in a trick play or two he'll pull a rabbit out of the hat that is his reputation of course i'll tell you what i've seen as many trick plays from the university of oklahoma down through the years as anybody everybody thinks they just run run run [Applause] second now and 11 after the five yard penalty gardeer to throw lots of time his intended receiver with samuels went off his fingertips incomplete third and long blevins outstanding coverage for the sooners wanted to go to eat the walker he was covered at the 30-yard line as oklahoma really was able to to handle that and do a good job cornerback over to thompson all over [Applause] third and 11 now and this is why oklahoma wanted to kick off they felt like their defense could stop guardier pressure by blevins on the linebacker blitz dardeer will go down blevins made that play and then also pressure from tom backus lance swanson finally got him [Applause] was terrific downfield though by belser watch blevins on the stunt this is the original hitman back in the pocket flushes him there's blevin chasing belser just had such great coverage plus going to the left it's hard you saw him try to set up just unhappy punting situation otis taylor is back deep for the sooners along with greg duquesne the short man the punt is a short one he tried to cough and corner it but it goes out of bounds at this 17-yard line we'll be back to the cotton bowl in just a moment collins is in at quarterback not chris nelson so collins will stay in for the sooners basketball teams you see number 10 that's steve collins off to gibbs right you're left and he's not really out of the picture steve collins broke his finger against the baylor bears and he's been out of action since i expect him back in a week or two status with some tough yards falls forward for a couple anthony curl and todd ringo there defensively for texas always seems to be around the football as does the right end oscar giles status has also been great for the sooners the 6u 62-yard touchdown and 124 yards offensively on the ground for mike gaddis the give to leon perry dive forward for just a couple it's going to bring up third and six not sure if that was true triple option that time because uh perry was so low to the ground normally quarterback comes down the line reads a defensive tackle if he takes a wide approach he'll give the football to the fullback this could have been a call play all the way short yardage look for gaddis third down four yards to go on the pitch here comes goddess first down and then some as he falls down i'm not sure exactly what happened gaddis went down and is getting up slowly and not really getting up at all hopefully he's all right teammate carrie a great block on curl to give him the first down boy this would be bad the enemy went down you heard bob berry a little earlier vienna the outstanding tailback for colorado now gada strips on the carpet all right here it is what's the block by perry reverse pivot option perry gets the block and let's see if he just it looks like he steps wrong right right about there one more angle let's see if we can pick it up and we won't try to speculate that's up to the trainers and the doctor right there maybe right ankle yeah that you're exactly right that's when it happened on the cut at about the 27 yard line oh he's in pain are they looking at the knee or the ankle it's a whale of a lot of different it's a knee well we're going to step aside as the oklahoma sooners try to catch their breath gattus down we'll see if he gets back up we'll be back they help mike gaddis off the field not good sign there for the oklahoma sooners he cannot put any weight at all on that left leg not sure yet whether it's the knee or the ankle walking very gingerly over to the sidelines and without gaddis the sooners have minus 11 yards rushing [Music] first mike lewis takes his place lewis has got some great speed looked out he's outside louis is brought down from behind but a nice pickup up to the 49-yard line he can do it and does he get a block from his teammate eric guess what's the wide out 18. here's lewis shaking and bacon this is what gives him some extra yardage white outs generally don't like the block yes does a good job nice run grady cavanist got him from behind the freshman out of sugarland texas but not after a pickup of 19. lewis again cut back into the middle uh three or four tough yards brian jones the middle linebacker stopped in there really shorten up the toss sweep uh let lewis find some open open area this is a prop 48 guy good track man in high school big reputation and it's going to be on his shoulders as oklahoma looks like he's going to go strictly with the tailback today you've seen very little out of the fullback the quarterback hadn't kept it on the option yet gain a four second and six leon perry on a quick shooter up the middle close to another first down at the 43-yard line of texas perry was bothered by turf toe last year you know he's been the big eighth player of the week a couple of times so he's certainly capable carrying his senior year out of orlando florida one of the few floridians to play for either team third and a long one lewis well that's going to be close looks like he got it they got just enough of a crease i'm not sure well let's see the spot you got them young eyes i think they're going to have to measure is there any doubt in your mind down i can't wait they got to go for i don't think they have the first down i think they're gonna be about two inches shy let's see what happens give me a break two inches shot huh let's see all right we'll take it all right all right let's take a look now what is it about two inches you're amazing you gotta go though right fourth down question take this take the middle backer out of it and run the snake the big problem here is to make sure everybody keeps their patience and poise gonna be a lot of noise you're going into the texas side of the field they're gonna try and disrupt the snap count if you cheat somebody on the other side of the field when you other side of the line goes up boy they're standing here on the texas side they're going to make it very difficult you got to go with the snake it's still early but certainly a key play fourth and inches no problem collins on the snake dives forward for one that's all they needed down to the 40-yard line so the sooner drive stays alive keep this in mind dave you're talking about very very fresh legs in now are running the football now you know this like lewis has got a lot of ability it's hot out there texas doesn't have enough the fake pitch to lewis here comes tank he wants to throw ernie touchdowns and there's a flag i think it'll be against texas what a play from pink collins to artie actually thought he'd made a mistake thought he should have run the football grady canvas whose father play the cornerback for the denver broncos interference doesn't matter watch this boot this is a great call mcdonough with a call going to run it decides to throw it kava's had pretty good coverage does hold on and oklahoma right back in it with gatta sitting on the sideline [Applause] that's already the second touchdown reception of the year the other one a 51-yarder against the kansas jayhawks [Music] collins then looked like he might want to run and then at the last second just before the line of scrimmage he pulls up and he throws a strike to arty gas 41 yards for the touchdown so with 6 20 left to go here in the third quarter the sooners with the extra point from artie lasher could pull to within seven and now it's looking like the strategy of oklahoma kicking off to start this half and getting reasonably good field position may help out there's the pass interference against the texas longhorns what you have to appreciate is how this ball club is responding when they lose their best football player that's arguably their best football players certainly their best offensive player all they do they'll take the ball around and score flashers extra point is good the sooners put the exclamation point on a 41-yard pass play from team collins to arty gas the first pass completion for tim collins this afternoon and it goes for a touchdown bob berry is down on the oklahoma sidelines with an injury update bob david doesn't look good at this point we're not going to speculate because we don't entirely know but the trainers were working on mike gaddis's left knee the outside ligament and he was taken off to the dressing room he's definitely done for the day and he was in some severe pain so we'll keep you updated on that the sooner faithful have come alive at the cotton ball you know oklahoma had to go for it fourth in an inch they get the first down with collins now collins on the boot pass lays it out there and there's the story brad riddell to kick off for the oklahoma sooners there you see the scoring drive again the big pass play collins [Applause] longhorns now it looks like artie lasher will kick off rodell will go over lasher with the penalty 13. look at here texas will kick off close they could onsite you don't have much to lose kick it from the 50. either on side or try to kick something very high and get down with coverage remember you can fair catch a kickoff oklahoma rd lasher will kick off from the 50-yard line brad riddell normally kicks off but he has the stronger of the two legs he normally kicks off from the 35 this after a 15-yard penalty it's gonna be a two-step kick on it they try to kick it high the ball goes to samuels at the three and hit him in at the 22. there's a clip by texas that one real smart boy i tell you the texas kids are not very happy with their uh teammate smith a backup fullback is going to give his buckle a very poor position and in a game that's built on emotion or you can really feel the momentum changing here at the cotton bowl without question and and what you also can feel there's the call all right watch it'll come to you into your screen on the left side watch number 17. [Music] well i picked it up afterward there's one on the other side i actually have one on this side you have the feeling that lewis is going to dig tacklers the rest of the way it's a change of pace from gaddis he's a little guy got us a big strong north south runner it's up to this man now to move the football for the university of texas gonna have to throw a lot of weight on the young shoulders of peter guard here well last week texas was down 13 points in the second half in fact in the fourth quarter to the rice owls and came back gardeer going in on fourth and goal from the four you know texas finally gets some field position makes a mistake and now they're at the 11-yard line has done pretty much what the coaches have asked of him today 9-14 no interception guardier on the rollout he'll tuck it under with a nice pickup of about five or six on the play wayne dixon and chris wilson on the stop defensively for ou wilson lost his helmet on the big hit helmets back about five yards he's still stand down hopefully he's all right let's pick it up they've used this bootleg pass several times nothing open turns it up field you'll watch the headgear as it goes backwards chris wilson the starting linebacker still down for the sooners boy they're losing them quickly for ou james good went out of the game thanks to his own doing in the third play of the game that might be a crap that's something we talked about earlier on or if yeah cramps might play a part of this with a temperature over 90 degrees and down in the field it's got to be over a hundred and that's something that i know they warn the players about there's not a whole lot you can do about that they try to give them as many liquids as possible well it used to be salt tablets but now you know with blood pressure problems maybe they don't do that i don't know second down now 14 yards to go they had the clipping penalty and they had to march that off first so it's still second and long for the longhorns see if they run at the new linebacker 45 alden with fake to had time and then look out scott evans wow boys this thing turned around dave evans beats his man around the corner there wasn't anybody open i mean nobody was open watch evans coming to the picture doesn't go for the fake handles his man cunningham in this case look at the speed you talk about being in motion one step after avoiding contact he was boy you don't want to get cute here you got third in about 9 000. run the draw well we said early on that they would have to try to protect garter and now there's some holes in that offensive line they give to walker well they're trying to get as much as they could to give the printer some room they got it past the 20 up to the 21 but terry ray stopped from there and the sooner fans are on their feet little tidal and dupont so far you see his statistics he's been having a good afternoon planning the football otis taylor back deep for the sooners a wobbly kick the quasi fair catches it inside of texas territory a very short punt from lil jadal and oklahoma will start at the texas 47. we're going to step aside with 4 15 left to go in the third quarter oklahoma is coming back [Music] with irv brown i'm dave armstrong bob berry down on the sidelines and the very heated sidelines how would you like your egg and you could cook an egg on the field today here temperature over 90 degrees leon perry he'll pick up about four or five for oklahoma as they come back on the attack and momentum such a key part of college football and you've got to think in this game in particular [Music] oklahoma really has a great field position now they're starting to soften them up a little bit with perry inside second and five from the 42. perry again goes inside this time stock after pickup of only one rocky allen there to rock him allen gave him a false read that time took a false step collins went for it short yardage there wasn't any question when it was third and three which it is right now who's gonna get the football now you don't know again are the sooners in two down territory here it's third and three they went for it on fourth and inches in their last drive and made it that was followed by a 41-yard pass play from ching collins to arty guest collins on a keeper first down and more down to the 32. that six hole opened up you talk about a big hole how'd you like to run through this in your living room look at this hole that's stopping and starting on a dime that's his best read of the day that thing just opened up they fly to the outside and you might think team collins has not run that much this year and texas starting to overplay the pitch exactly they fly to the outside and once again jim donald takes advantage of that good call again the stuff up the middle good for just a couple of yards but that stuff up the middle tends to open things up outside well i really felt that they depended so much on gaddis in the first half that he was just catching a shadow out there plus they were ignoring the first man you can't do that with perry pickup of just a couple down just outside the 30-yard line second we'll call it eight it's a long eight collins again on the keeper he goes out of bounds inside the 20 down to the 19-yard line forced out by todd ringo you're looking at a quality guy right here gaddis gets hurt look at this cut look at perry hustle to try and get in front of his teammate and do some good tim callas has been terrific ever since his teammate gaddis went out sometimes that happens but you've got to get going and help out you got to feel like oklahoma gave team collins a vote of confidence in that locker room i'm sure after his first half he had to think maybe they're going to go with nelson in the second half but the coaches gave him the confidence and he's playing a much better second half very good point leon perry again dives forward for two or three it'll be second and seven 152 clock running in the third quarter texas leading but that lead seems a little bit questionable right now as oklahoma has come out of the locker room fired up 21-14 our score the longhorns by seven still a long way to go in this one mike lewis is stopped or is he he was hit initially there by tommy jeter and james patton and spun forward maybe to the line of scrimmage and it's going to bring up third and long i really thought jeter had him down at the 22-yard line watch the knee and see what you think here it is straight isolation play jeter comes in with the hit and no you can't see it i believe he's legal third and nine loss of one on the play collins to long cut inside falls down to the 10-yard line it's gonna be about a yard shy of the first down nice cut back though by ted long todd ringo kept him from getting the first down long touches the ball for the first time today play action guess the blocker in front of him just a one-man screen if you like there's the block by guest it's good effort by long and away oklahoma runs the football i would say that was a great call they only need one what do you do do you run the option you keep it in the quarterback's hands or do you give it to the fullback perry i only need one but it's fourth down collins pitches it ike lewis is stopped i think short of the first down they had to get to the nine and they won't do it good defense by the university of texas and now maybe the momentum shifts back towards the longhorn what's the play it looked like college is going to be able to cut up the six hole off tackle and i appears but instead he's got to pitch it this is a gallon effort here by lewis because there was nothing doing on the outside he needed to go the nine he gets buried at the 10. lance gunn is the guy that forced collins to pitch it anthony curl makes the stop and the longhorns take over at their own 10. we're talking about curl before he was a defensive player of the city when he came out of houston really came on this past spring talking to bill little about him guy hit some people one more time on this uh dave here it is option all the way and it looks like there's daylight there isn't as they close strong and then ike lewis is nailed at the 10. not almost a fumble by the sooners as the pitch was behind ike lewis he made a valid effort and a great athletic play to get it back to the line of scrimmage five seconds to go here in the third quarter this probably will be the last play of the third stanza the longhorns take over at the 10-yard line adrian walker stopped by wayne dixon and that'll do it the gun goes off and that's the end of the third quarter texas holds on to the lead it's 21-14 we'll be back to the cotton bowl in just a moment [Applause] there is a prerequisite to this game in addition to needing a ticket if you're an ou fan you must wear the crimson colors if you're a longhorn fan you have to wear something inburn orange [Applause] and you must cheer wildly long snaps at all excuse me you know what a lot of high school teams have to do to get a snap back there 13 15 yards use their quarterback that's tough that's not as easy as it looks no it's not garnier on second and five both the 15-yard line the pitch back to walker first down out of bounds nixon and mayfield forced him out of bounds topping the clock just starting the final stanza he really does have the speed to get to the corner color guard lead up field and then walker shows you all kinds of moves to turn that into a nice little game good effort riley's the guy on the pull did a nice job he's been playing very very hard and they've used him to trap using the pull using the drive think of that fourth and one for the sooners at the 10 yard line that's going to be a play that will be replayed and replayed on talk shows throughout the midwest for the next several days i really thought the call was good i thought texas did a great job with their defensive end they were concerned i'm sure about going with perry because he hadn't been able to pick up a lot of yardage the best gap that they've been able to find as we look at the call going against the offense the best gap they've been able to find was at the six and seven hole particularly the six hole which is a right tackle been doing a good job i thought texas had a great call it was a good defensive play from lance gunn and anthony curl to stop that one yeah i thought at the time too it was a smart move for ou they had the momentum on their side and they wanted to try to get it in and score another touchdown so the two second guessers up here agree with the oklahoma coaches on that call it didn't work for them but i think we'd have done the same thing guardier fakes a throw the old statue of liberty play falls forward to the 20-yard line after the penalty not quite back to the original line of scrimmage it's going to bring up second and 12. that's interesting play you run that with the hope that you're going to get man coverage because when the fullback goes in motion you want the middle backer to go with him oklahoma has the answers on the quarterback draw nice nice cover second down 13 yards to go ball back at the 19. oklahoma counting on their defense to hold the longhorns here and get the hands back in the hands of tink collins and ike lewis and the rest pressure from blevins he just gets it off what a pass to tony jones gardeer was just inches away from the astroturf [Applause] [Music] kind of world did he get that off i mean that is a great play watch the pursuit coming up the middle there's no way he's going to get this off and somehow he's able to complete the pass before he goes down as blevins was coming all the way and he breaks free well that was a great effort by uh qb guardier [Applause] that reminded a lot of longhorn fans of that diving touchdown he made in the closing moments against rice last week well he was almost done and outstretched with one hand guardier goes across the middle his intended receiver was the tight end carry cash that was a solid call goes for the hot receiver the stunt was coming they got what they wanted just unable to hook up now the oklahoma fans are going wild texas must punt it away one thing too about oklahoma wanting the south side and the third quarter is in the fourth quarter they're going to be going towards their fans their fans will be the ones cheering them on as they go for the touchdowns now little toodall with a high punch the crazy with a fair catch he's got it [Music] vivo still just kind of chilling out here trying to stay cool in the very hot dallas sunshine here at the cotton bowl evil hasn't changed expressions today there you see the sooner schrooner they're willing to celebrate folder ears for that mike lewis outside one man to beat look out lance gunn was the last gun to get it it's a good thing lance had his pistol loaded he had the angle i like that too for those fresh legs watch the little guy lewis turn it on he gets those shoulders north and south suddenly thought the boundary might get him earlier when he crosses midfield and only the angle permits uh texas to keep him from scoring the balls at the 21-yard line but oh you want to move excellent run by the way 41-yard play for mike lewis lewis again diving forward boy is he playing with inspiration in front of the shooter fans down to the 15. ken hackamack finally tripped him up yeah lewis weighs about i don't know 185 190 305. i thought he might tear the leg off instead he's able to yank loose second and five [Applause] perry perry gets across the 15 down to the 14 to pick up a couple rocky allen and ken hackamack there defensively it would appear it's time for an option here as their third [Music] well when they spotted probably about three ball just on the other side of the 20. normally you like to keep it in your quarterback's hands [Applause] well at the 14 they need to get it down to the 11 yard line for the first down third and three on the option collins on the keeper behind his block he's close to the first down but i don't think he's got it behind the uh block of taryn manning dwayne duncan i think stopped him short of the first down all right let's pick it up counter option they do keep it in the hands of the quarterback defensive end does a nice job stringing it out that's an excellent effort though by collins he just doesn't have to wait to do much other than that they will go for the field goal that appears remember it's a 21-14 game he had a strange extra point texas had one block they picked it up and threw it in the end zone to pick up two points thinking here ou needs two scores to win unless they would have gone for the two-point conversion the field goal is up and it is good a 30-yard field goal from rd lasher and the sooners have pulled within four 11 44 left to go in this one and the sooners have scored all the points here in the second half they trailed 21-7 as they went into the locker room 10 unanswered points for oklahoma bombarry has the gas down on the sideline dallas cowboys offensive lineman coach tony wise who's seeing a lot of friendly faces here tony you know a lot about oklahoma texas what do you think of this game today well i know a lot about oklahoma but i not know much about texas i had the afternoon off just decided to come down it's a great game love being here well you're the offensive line coach for the dallas cowboys and what a blockbuster of a trade the other day 12 players for one herschel walker to the vikings for a lot of new faces what do you think about the trade well jimmy felt we needed to do something like that to uh for the future of the cowboys we had to uh get some draft picks and some defensive players and uh i you know i i trust in his judgment and uh the judgment that the pro-personnel department that kind of thing so sounds like a good deal tony wise i appreciate you being with us cowboys will turn it around tony tells me they're on five but they've got a lot of new faces tony wise formerly of oklahoma state university he knows the big eight dave number 84 goes with jimmy johnson from the miami program that started at the oklahoma state program and now with the dallas cowboys brad riddell will kick off for the oklahoma sooners van malone and tony james back deep that's ben malone who drops it at the six cuts back cuts back again and ripped down to 21. texas is to do something they need something very positive to drive here they're coming off the field a little slow oklahoma looks fresher momentum is definitely on the senior side that's why statistics really mess you up or you look at it statistically texas has outscored their opponents 54-36 in the second half this year not in this game though this game is 10 to nothing the big play in that drive the long run from ike lewis backs are split they give us to walker not much doing there tom backus and chris wilson there defensively that wasn't much of a play boyd pulling on the trap watch 58 can't find anybody right here and the play just never really gets off the schneid there is oklahoma closes quickly you know the oklahoma band is picking things up chris wilson looking over to the sidelines he's happy and the most of the noise you're hearing here at the cotton bowl right now is emanating from the sooner fans guardier to throw scrambling look out tom brackus wow the pass rush has been fantastic and back as the guy who missed the citrus bowl because of that knee injury just blows past his man look at this you talk about getting after it the sixth sack of the game for the sooners a total loss of 53 yards for the longhorns on those sacks if hard work will do it you're looking at a guy who's made it because of hard work in the weight room tom back bacchus has great work habits he just has that epic repetition he was a tight end in high school had to work hard in the offseason too recovering from a knee injury that forced him to miss the citrus bowl third and long and now the whistle will blow the play dead scott evans rip guard ear down but then tried to hold him as he went down he didn't really hear the whistle with the sooner fans making so much noise in that end of the field and a little bit of conversation that time between cunningham and evans but i thought evans showed some sportsmanship not drilling him play was blown dead very early as things have kind of fallen apart now for the universe of texas o.u is just blowing them out up front secondary's had it off second half they've been able to take the time off of the tremendous pass rush that's going to make it third and longer after another five-yard walk-off 91 yards and penalties against the longhorns and now it's third and 23. and the ou fans are going to make it very difficult for carder to hear his signals if this is the pros you have that new rule where they just keep penalizing it centers with five defensive backs as the quasi comes in as the nickelback gardeer batted away a fine defensive play from kevin thompson thompson was eighth in the nation a year going picks let's pick it up here they actually do a great job of giving him time look at that protection that time as the longhorn lineman responded a challenge but there's the play they're going to get the football back they meaning oklahoma about midfield adrian walker looked to be wide open but kevin thompson closed quickly otis taylor back at the 50-yard line waiting the punt of bobby lil jidal who's putting from his own end zone [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh a good all the way back to the 38 yard line taylor fumbled it momentarily and then returned it about five yards but that's it oklahoma will restart things at their end of the field at the 44 yard line we're going to step aside with 9 35 left to go on this one oklahoma has the ball when we come back [Music] well things have changed in this game 10 unanswered points for the sooners and now the coaches of the longhorns are the ones that are unhappy it's amazing irv how you can feel things like that in this stadium you feel the longhorn fans just kind of sitting on their hands biting their nails a little bit hoping their longhorns can hold on collins wants to throw on first down he wants to go deep just under throws already guess artie gas was streaking behind the defense at the 15-yard line grady cavanis was beat deep but the pass just a little bit short has him turned around we'll pick it up in the air look how wide open he is just unable to come through cabinets just a youngster great prospect as we mentioned his father starting corner for years for the denver broncos he was beaten that time they just don't connect now you come back my guess is with the option they'll try and get into lewis hands mike lewis has done a yeoman's job in the place of mike gaddis who went out with a knee injury now they pass again to ted long long gets it to midfield stopped by mark berry and paul biermann biermann an interesting story there he being from norman oklahoma the home of the oklahoma sooners [Music] ross upset with himself tries to make the block here it is just this one-man screen the wideout must make the play watch frost number 18 just unable to get it done that time third and four and once again i do believe you're looking at the option let's see if they keep it in the little guy's hands collins after a no for two first half now three of six in this game for 57 yards penalty flag on the play as perry i think had enough forward momentum to get the first down but let's see what the flag is about now the linesman threw it they were split on the left side this could be interesting let's see if it's holding or offside motion motion on the sooner so perry's gain that looked to be enough for a first down will be called back and now a passing situation for the sooners 8 41 left to go in this one oklahoma trailing at one point 21-7 within 21-17 in the longhorn [Applause] third and nine at the 45 of oklahoma let's see if the set dick takes the call he came out in a wing set here it is they haven't shown this colin straight back almost picked off anthony curl almost picked off a pass that was intended for ike lewis on the sidelines what they do is they overload the left side with both backs they came out in this set for the first time one back swings and the other on the circle that's pretty well covered so the university of oklahoma is gonna have to punt 816 left in the game chris samuels is deep for the longhorns a booming kick that samuels will call a fair catch on back at the 10 yard line so the longhorn certainly starting with poor field position in this second half the defense of the sooners has pinned them back there that's been tough to get a first down [Music] well you see the crutches now and mike gaddis bob berry give us the word dave mike's coming back out on the field as you can see and i talked to the sooner trainers they say it's definitely his left knee and they're only calling it a sprain at this point it's obviously not as bad as first guest or he wouldn't be coming back out here but he was in the locker room for most of the third quarter having it examined and we still don't know how much or how many games he'll miss after the texas game good news to see him back out here though sure is and i'm sure that will be inspiration for the sooners as they see him come back onto the field you know there's so many knee injuries and there was a guy years ago and i honestly don't know what happened with it he had an idea much like the flak jacket to protect your ribs he had something for the knee and i i don't know where that stands but i'll tell you one thing if somebody could come out come up with something out there that would protect the knee the man is an instant millionaire too many knee injuries every year certainly the big bugaboo and football not only at the college ranks but high school and professional as well sooner fans making a lot of noise down on that end of the field they give the walkers got some room up the middle across the 20 at first down jason bowser finally stops him but not after a pickup of 12. great call by lynn amity is walker a little slow getting up run the draw to slow down a hard charging front four oh look at him shake and bacon that's not without the casualty of adrian walker who's carried off remember university of oklahoma burned a timeout because of that formation set a moment ago they have two left texas three the clock is running with 7 47 to go in this one longhorns clinging to a four-point lead here comes samuels he slips and goes down at the 25 chris wilson made sure he stayed now in a pickup with just a couple stays uh in bounds by cutting it short that really is crucial here it is toss short side of the field and they've told him young man and he is young he's a freshman stay in bounds good balance there to keep keep from going down second and long samuels just 33 yards on the ground today second and eight clock nearing seven minutes cardio to throw picked off felser has it still on his feet flags are flying looks like we might have a clip on the sooners but they'll have the football what a great job nobody's safety that's the way you're supposed to play come over and help out in the middle of the field texas on the gamble they go for the post pattern they beat the initial coverage but watch the safety come over right there the university of oklahoma got the football they'll be penalized for the clip looked like an injury here to belcher too we'll pick this up boy they've had a ton of guys go down and they lost james good we hate to keep talking about that but good win out very early now belcher limps officials yeah those guys uh they can save money and only had one official for that play well the sooners get the break after the turnover for the longhorns they'll push the chains back to the 49-yard line of the shooters but it'll be first and ten from there elsa really showed you something there the db checklist is speed agility balance and you can back pedal he showed all three all four i should say i'll have to pick the play plenty of times 6 52 left to go in this one sooner is trailing by four with a ball at their own 49. the pitch to lewis and lose one blocker one tackler and uh gets it back to about the line of scrimmage and that's it biermann and tommy jeter there don't know if we'll have that one again dave but the angle was not good that time collins has been doing such a good job watch his angle he lets one man play two by taking that step backwards and that's just inexperienced texas does a nice job caving it in on that side but once again if one can play two it makes it a lot easier lewis now 10 carries in the game in substitution for my goddess and 63 yards from the power eye long now in motion reverse here comes long what a play defensively but long still has room to run look out he fumbles it who's got it there's a big pile up at the 25. [Applause] shane caused ted long to go wide in the backfield let's see who has the football well it's not who had it to start with oklahoma gets it it's who ends up with it those pilots are mean watch this play it's a great call to catch him in man this is the man who went in motion the other way along an excellent effort back there by a long to get looser what a wall he has down here cuts inside texas very fortunate to keep it from going all the way and in oklahoma fortunate to pounce on that fumble it looked like it was gas wasn't it yeah artie gas and mike sawatsky also there for the sooners but jess was the guy that had his paws on it that's a great call i guess also the guy that caught the touchdown pass of 41 yards from team collins now the sooners have it at the 25. mike lewis he wants to get outside now cuts it back in 9 to the 12. first down sooner that's the kind of moves you see every week from heisman trophy candidate dallas from the airport nobody ever gets a good shot and nobody gets a good shot at ike lewis right here watch this you can't arm tackle this kid he's too quick that looked like eric metcalf the guy who played here at the university of texas [Applause] metcalf now on with the cleveland browns but ike lewis is doing a yeoman's job and substitution for mike addis louis a prop 48 sophomore 5 19 clock ticking [Applause] leon perry keeps a texas defense honest as he dives across the 10 down to the nine yard line you don't know if it'll come up but we'll just settle for a field goal here negative yardage second and uh [Applause] then i got eight to go i can get a first down at the one-yard line well i don't know with uh under five minutes to go now or that'd be a tough call because that would still leave the sooners trailing by one the pitch to lewis cuts it back falls forward down to the five yard line mark barry makes the stop as he trips lewis up as he was diving back inside somebody fights off long's block on the outside on the perimeter watch number two long with the block right there number three i beg your pardon that is not wrong and uh university of oklahoma getting that block out there from uh from long i had the right man wrong number louis looks like he's hurting a little back spasms if he goes out that will leave the uh oklahoma's being charged with the timeout one left now they have a take any time out they want ike lewis to get back in this game now they might have been able to take an injury time out but then lewis can't be reinserted if he's the guy that's hurt they have to keep him out for a play why do you make a great uh great thought though they did want to take him out you don't want new hands touching the football games on the line right here now they've got to keep that one [Music] if you hosted a meeting of the mines a place where the right-brained dreamers inspired the left-brained doers where would you gather what starts here changes the world oklahoma pulls this one out you're going to look back for two things belser's pick and then the great car i mean a great call on the reverse they sent a man in motion long comes back for the reverse and ronan the linebacker has the playmate he kicks out of that play don't oklahoma texas always come down to this not always but it just seems that way this is a game that we talked about at the beginning herb that you really can't predict because of the emotion involved see what jim donovan calls her brewer does check in for ike lewis collins stopped short of the first down at the three-yard line rocky allen and brian jones topped him short now you've got fourth and two from the three what do you do well they're going to go for the field goal but once again leon fuller is very intelligent when lewis doesn't come back in you know is going to carry the football it's going to be the quarterback unless you go to the garbage pail they're not going to go the garbage pail down there that close fans are booing a little bit but i really believe that this has to be the strategy look at that disparity wow oklahoma in the second half and they've about scored texas ten to nothing the reason that you're doing this you've got a tab out here don't the reason you're doing it here is you don't have gaddis and you don't have lewis everybody in the ballpark knows who's going to get the football it's going to be the quarterback now you've got dual brewer an outstanding freshman out a lot in oklahoma with 4-4 speed a lot of pressure then yeah it is a lot of lots of pressure but you got a freshman and team collins playing quarterback and you got a a sophomore prop 48 mike lewis who hasn't played before this year a lot of pressure on all of now it looks like oklahoma may go for it flasher has gone off the field mike lewis has checked back on [Music] well so texas took the time out and during the during that time out it was oklahoma who changed their mind and the uh oklahoma has no timeouts left did they take that time out no it was oklahoma then i guess that did take the time out they have no timeouts left not texas i guess oklahoma wanted to think it over so they have no timeouts left here's the ball game folks fourth and two at the three mike lewis i don't think he's got it anthony curl i think stopped an inches short along with brian jones number 60. let's see where the spot is oklahoma says they have it they're going to measure well this one's not right in front of me so i'm not going to be able to tell you it's close adrian cooper the tight end for oklahoma's clapping like he thinks the sooner is happening let me break coming down to the measurement hey let me bring up something if they don't have it here's what david mcwilliams is thinking about he's thinking about taking the safety if things don't work out if you have to punt out of the end zone if it goes a fourth down you're in trouble here's where you make your money and earn your living first of all first things first let's see if it's a first down [Music] let's see they've got a this is so close that they had to get the flagship up right to make sure a silly little millimeter and the sooner drive stays alive [Applause] [Music] wow can you score too quick in this situation that's a thought there are four minutes left you're looking at a gimme you would think a yard yard and a half away unless you drop it louis cut down ground level straight power get a little bit of a wedge up there ram blocking so lewis keeps the drive alive on fourth and two from the three and then he jams it in from the one for the touchdown and the sooners have the lead for the first time this afternoon [Music] could this all come back when you look at it to a timeout that was called they weren't going to go for it they had the field goal unit on they took time out and decided to go and it certainly has paid off as the suitors now lead the texas longhorns with 3 42 to go in this one our score oklahoma 24. the university of texas 21. [Applause] and if you're a longhorn fan you're going to think back to that fourth down play more than this the touchdown for mike lewis the sooner fans are delirious the longhorn fans are trying to pump their team up with still under four minutes to go get some credit on that right side and keys bricks been blocking effectively all day long later with this but he's been laying a nice block in there and the sooners have the lead for the first time artie lasher will kick off for oklahoma [Music] chris samuels and tony jones the experience in there for the longhorns back deep still a lot of time on the clock though texas you'll remember last week against the rice owls was down by 13 in the fourth quarter came back to win it as gardeer took it over with about four minutes to go in that game from the four yard line on fourth down lost in all of this is the pick that beltser made give his ball club a shot that followed a first down [Applause] flasher with a two-step kickoff samuels at the 10. the 20. still on his feet up across the 30 down to the 34 to bob berry down on a i'm sure a very happy oklahoma sideline it's very noisy down here dave and i think you guys would agree one of the biggest plays in the game in an odd sense was mike gaddis injury because when he went out ike lewis came in got a big run right off the bat led to the touchdown pass when he went out moments ago with an injury and do well brewer came back in lewis was over there screaming i'm fine i'm fine let me back in there he converted on fourth down and he scored what might be the game-winning touchdown this is a great finish you think back to 1984 this game ended in a tie with a field goal at may again out of bounds goes tony jones at the 43-yard line one yard shy of a first down dave you think ahead now if there's anything such as moral victory would texas love to tie oklahoma my guess is yeah they've got a tremendous field goal kicker we've seen him convert from 49 yards and he actually was 20 20 yards through the net clemens put figure in this thing he's almost in range now this would be about a 75-yarder but that's exactly right he really has a strong leg guardier has been outstanding this afternoon no interceptions in that touchdown pass to start things off for the longhorns right here to throw again johnny walker is wide open the coverage by kevin thompson but across midfield down to the 41-yard line that was run and shoot all the way and walker goes down on the curl all right pick it up watch this this is a run and shoot play miles davis is detroit six steps left bingo there it is right now i guarantee you texas isn't thinking about a tying field goal they've got great field positions still 3 17 to go in this ball game ball down at the 41 yard line to the sooners samuels in motion garnier gets rid of it jones was hit hard by chris wilson but it's close to another first down not quite there a pickup of nine on the play down to the 33. they are in field goal range what a pair of hands as jones has this is not an easy catch extends comes back i thought he's going to cough it up right here look at the hip as oklahoma really gets some effort that time from wilson he's been doing the whole game start here now 13-21 for 119 yards and that touchdown samuels on the draw play a first down to the 30. greg de quezy makes the stop for the sooner they're going to move the chains again they'll stop the clock momentarily to do that with 2 28 to go on this one and now the longhorn fans are up on their feet nobody's going home i'm looking out on those fairgrounds and anybody out there they're just automobiles and buses people trying to get back in those that didn't even have tickets i'd like to see the finish of this one only one of them excited bebo first and 10 from the 30. with a big defensive play and now a flag mayfield gets a flag let's see what it is if he grabs a face mask now he rubs the passer gary mayfield let's pick it up blevins with an outstanding stunt let's see what happens here piles on then he ripped him across his body i think that's what he got it for not so much the hit but then taking him and throwing him across his body well the personal foul really hurts the sooners and really what it turns out to be is a five yard gain and another first down but a big loss was evident for the longhorns after blevins made the initial hit watch it one more time here's what dave is talking about he rips the face mass and pulls him over officials are very conscious of that facemask under two minutes to play first and ten from the 25. guardia to johnny walker no gain good defensive play from kevin thompson i think that one was close to being picked off by thompson ill-advised pass texas will take time out they have two left now that was not a good decision right there now the longhorns got the football after a short kickoff from rd lasher they had great field position up at the 33. gardeer has engineered this drive down to the 25-yard line texas led 21-7 at the intermission it's been all oklahoma in the second half but now the sooners are trying to hang on to a three-point lead they've covered all the bases texas did have an extra point block that ended up to their advantage when they scored on a pass and of course with the new rule brought in a couple years ago with work but keep that in mind ou has pressured the kicker and i know all those things are going through david williams mine this is one and whoever loses it is going to look back and say if we'd have just done this if this would have happened but you think back to that two-point conversion if that were just the normal one-point conversion gary gibbs would be looking at texas needing the touchdown to win not the field goal to tie the quasi comes in walker touchdown johnny walker's fourth touchdown catch of the year there's a baseball coach watching this in his living room right now cliff dustin who has this guy in the spring will be pretty proud of that catch a post pattern the ball was right on the money it's an important field extra point it's good and now the longhorns lead by four with still 1 33 to go but remember oklahoma has used all their timeouts wow imagine yourself a long hard fan right now you've been watching this entire slide in the second half it's been all oklahoma here in the second half and now all of a sudden when you think all hope is gone the 25-yard pass play from peter gardeire to johnny walker watch this he barely gets it off look at the pressure stays in there avoids the pass rusher you don't see a better catch in that that ball was strong where it could not be picked off it could only be caught or dropped big players make big plays when it's sticky [Applause] brewer and otis taylor are back deep for the sooners and a the delirious was really yelling at him earlier but not now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's a high kick that taylor will take at his eight-yard line rip down at the 24. and with 128 to go no timeouts oklahoma a team that does not throw the football well we'll try to come up with a miracle touchdown [Applause] [Music] what a scoring drive engineered by the redshirt freshman peter gardeer and the 25-yard passplay to johnny walker the thing that caps it off and we remind you that the last time the longhorns went with a freshman quarterback was 1944 in this oklahoma game that was bobby lane and the longhorns won that game that one goes out of bounds to stop the clock [Applause] what an upset this would be for the longhorn snapping a four-game winning streak by the sooners in this contest i promise you what they're talking about on the texas sideline yelling at their guys or watch out for the hook and ladder watch out for a reverse those are the things that ball clubs would have a problem throwing the football like to do late in the game watch for a hook and ladder king collins fakes the throw now he comes outside he gets it up to the 30-yard line but the clock is still gonna run anthony curl stopped in there remember oklahoma can't stop it they have no time-outs remaining [Applause] freshman quarterback trying to get him off the mark one minute left in the game third and three mike lewis had the first down i think they're going to give him enough for the first down to stop the clock to move the chains and the sooners must hurry i thought they had the hook and ladder set up on the play that that colin scrambled that's simply a pass and then a lateral to somebody coming out of the backfield [Music] well there's a trick play in the sooner arsenal they're going to try it now clock moving again as you see there's 45 ticks left i think collins wants to run again that's fine with the longhorns they want to keep that clock moving under 30 seconds to go the sooners need a touchdown trailing by four they've got to go deep here they just throw it out of bounds to stop the clock and that will allow team collins to get some further instructions from the oklahoma sideline remember the old boomerooski that nebraska used put the ball on the ground let it guard run it you need something wild here because the conventional stuff just isn't going to work [Applause] now that happened in the orange bowl for the nebraska cornhuskers well again oklahoma is going to search into their playbook and try to come up with something that will allow them to go 50 58 yards or 53 yards in just eight seconds right now lance gunn who runs four four four five is back at the 30-yard line if somebody does break loose they're going to have to beat lance gunn because he can't even see the down lineman he's that far back bob hucker is closer to oklahoma right now than lance gunn he's cheating in a little bit he was way back they're going to reset the clock and give oklahoma 10 seconds not eight a chance maybe for oklahoma to run two plays whatever they run it's got to go out of bounds or it's got to be for a touchdown oklahoma looked to have won the game on the one-yard touchdown by ike lewis but what a drive by the longhorn collins is sacked the sooners won't be able to get another playoff and that'll do it the longhorns upset the sooners wow [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the longhorns pull off the upset of the oklahoma sooners 28-24 our final score and what a great drive by the texas longhorns gardeire capping things off with a 25-yard pass play to johnny walker and that man david mcwilliams goes off a winner for the first time as the head coach of the longhorns williams never lost a texas o.u game when he was a player back in the early 60s but he was owen two versus ou as a coach not anymore he's got that monkey off his back and david mcwilliams is a happy man and he'll sleep well tonight well and and they did it against an excellent defense ou plays as good a defense as anybody and the university of texas after giving up the uh go ahead touchdown with about four minutes left they come right back at him and they win it on a great post pattern that was a tremendous catch by walker sooner fans are stunned they thought they had the game one when ike lewis went over with 3 42 left to go in the ball game but then again that final drive 66 yards on just seven plays that took just over two minutes and was capped off by peter gardeer the redshirt freshman a 25-yard pass play to johnny walker and the posts are history [Applause] i get a reminder you can use all the cliches records [Applause] again you can just point back or if you're a longhorn fan you're sitting there thinking on that fourth and one you thought lewis would stop short of the first down the officials said no it's just a millimeter good enough to make it and as a longhorn fan you're thinking oh no here we go again snake pit against the oklahoma sooners we're going to lose but no the youngster peter gardeire who will be forever enshrined in longhorn history brings the texas team back and they win it 28-24 we'll come back to a rowdy cotton bowl in just a moment a lot of happy people here at the cotton bowl especially dressed in burnt orange and one of those happy people is with bob berry johnny walker they gotta cut the touchdown pass bob great play for johnny walker beating oklahoma tell me about the play first of all did you have it open during the day yeah it was open all day they've been blitzing all day long we finally went ahead and said hey let's look for the crossing route the middle of the field is wide open and the last play that's exactly what we did i think a lot of people were just hoping texas would kick a field goal and tie did you guys know in the huddle you'd score touchdown hey as soon as we got there said touchdown let's go let's go for it we want to win it ty is not going to do us any good we didn't want to keep the field going to go for the touchdown johnny was your team outraged a little bit by the point spread coming in people saying oklahoma win by three touchdowns exactly we're very very upset because we thought that we had played some good football even though it was a one-point game against watch we proved how hard uh we came back we worked hard we still proved that we had a good football team so hey we came in here play oh you and sean congratulations get on into the locker room arkansas next for the texas longhorns and again they break a four-year losing streak it's been since 1983 since they've walked off the field here dave and herb victoria it's back to you the 28-24 victory over oklahoma was the first of four that peter gardier had over the sooners dubbed peter the great by texas fans gardeer is the only quarterback on either side to win all four red river games we hope you've enjoyed red river classic [Music] 1989.
