we've got a relatively small crowd on tap for this one today a lot of people probably at the beach enjoying this weather jay randolph along with reggie rucker down on the field the toss of the coin coming referee fred silva and it's going to be the san diego chargers to receive speaking of the chargers reggie they have a former pittsburgh steeler mark malone who'll go at quarterback today and mark malone says that this is just another game but i don't believe that you can't tell me that mark malone doesn't want to beat the pittsburgh steelers more than anything else this season the steelers coming off the big victory last sunday in the dome against houston and bobby brister will get the call at quarterback today and he is seemingly solidifying the situation on offense the steelers are building for tomorrow and this is a piece of the puzzle already in place buddy brister he has all of the qualities that they've been looking for ever since terry bradshaw left this organization brister last week 17 of 36 racking up 311 yards brister out of northeast louisiana a very up-tempo chap and he doesn't uh mind telling the folks across the line from him that he's coming yeah but i got one problem with that leave those defensive people alone bobby bristow doesn't need to get involved with that this kickoff is sponsored by budweiser the king of beers anderson kicking off for the steelers and into the end zone it is fielded back there by jamie holland and down and we'll start at the 20-yard line for the san diego chargers both these clubs four and ten the chargers with mark malone at quarterback anthony jones and gary anderson miller the rookie he's a real burner jamie holland and arthur cox it's dala for thompson rosado mcknight and richards the rookie in the offensive line first down from the 20. in motion that's anderson coming to the near sideline and the give up the middle barry redden number 20 who is starting in there at the h-back position nickerson coming up with a stop along with aaron jones it's jones williams and johnson in the defensive line one of the steelers is down jordan little nickerson and hitton jordan the rookie and in the secondary woodruff woodson gowdy and griffin and aaron jones the rookie for pittsburgh out of eastern kentucky getting his fifth start today he had some starts at linebacker his fellows played very very well and it appears to be a knee injury as they're attending to him aaron jones going down for the steelers right side of the screen you'll see number 97 aaron jones really see where he got it but he's grabbing his knee [Music] number one draft choice for the steelers this year has played a lot of different positions defensive end linebacker very talented young fella he needs to bulk up get a little stronger during the off-season we're going to take a time out with this injury situation we'll be back right after these messages back here at jack murphy stadium jay randolph along with reggie rucker aaron jones has helped off the field and he's been replaced by keith gary there is chuck noll noel 56 years old his 20th season as the steeler head coach well he may miss aaron jones in there he's done a good job and they've expected some continued pressure from the pass rushing of aaron jones will try to get a report on the extent of that injury second down and eight malone throws the catch is made gary anderson taking it in and he's at the 26 yard line where david little number 50 made the tackle you take a look at the charges offensive line they have four free agents up front good blocking right there on gerald williams by dan rosado third down and four the steelers go into their nickel defense very retin number 20 darren flutie 89 in the lineup right now along with quinn early 87 and miller 83 malone and the ball tipped and incomplete fine play was made by woodson number 26. woodson who may very well be voted the mvp for pittsburgh when they vote next tuesday what a fine year he's had out of purdue he certainly does a lot of things for the steelers there again is the high jumping rod woodson of course he was a world-class hurdler so he really knows how to get up in the air two good punters in this game today moshenko getting this one off it comes down low taken by woodson 35 and he gets near the 40-yard line a 43-yard punt a 9-yard return and for the chargers gary plummer making the play the steelers on offense will have bobby brister going at the quarterback spot hodge warren williams the rookie locket what a year lips is having preston gothard is the tight end up front 219th regular season game for webster woefully in blankenship dawson and elkin first down the ball near the 40-yard line no score opening moments banging his way forward is williams across the 40 to the 42-yard line williams carrying it looked like plumber making the play williams charles phillips and o'neill in the defensive line browner cedric figaro the rookie gary plummer the other outside backer gilbert sam seal pat miller and vince glenn in the secondary lips set out on the wing right second down and eight the handoff going to williams sweeping it outside and he is near a first down good effort on the play he got that ball down across the 50 gil bird knocked him out of bounds williams averaging 3.9 a carry out of miami and we've got an end zone view the steelers offensive backfield production has been better ever since the combination of hodge and number 42 warren williams have combined they have been getting some production these are two pretty good backs they do a lot of things well going off there is aaron jones they're going to take him for some x-rays banging up the middle warren williams williams getting near the 46-yard line tackle made by cedric frigaro the middle linebacker and mike charles number 71 the left tackle that caught a moment ago for machenko the 79th of the year tied a record by our colleague paul mcguire paul who played at the citadel and of course came here in his early days and al davis was still involved in pro football in this town second down and six and rolling to the near side comes brister looking running at the 40 35 slides in for the first down 11-yard pickup by brister gary plummer number 50 making the stop and a good looking opening drive for the steelers yeah that was a very confident move by bubby brister and i think he's gotten a lot of confidence after that drive last week that he engineered for 80 yards in the waning moments of the game which they won over the houston oilers now you can see brister has really no idea right here that he's going to throw the football that's a fake and he wants to run that ball all the way he picks up the first down easily walter andrew bobby brister the third at the controls and a handoff going to hodge and he can't get anything fine play made by keith browner number 57 browner the outside linebacker used to be at cincinnati played at usc a free agent signed on here a member of the famous football playing browner clan this keith browner is six six 260 some pounds so he's a big strong fella he's tough to get around the outside because he's tough to block he's very strong in his hands [Music] ten minutes left to play we're in the first quarter no score locket and lips both set out to the top of your screen christopher straight back drop pressure and down he goes joe phillips number 75 on the sack 96 tackles coming into today's game tops for the chargers well the charges are a very good pass rushing teams headed by lee williams and leslie o'neil those guys you know about right in the middle of that defensive line though is six five 275 pound joe phillips and he does a good job pressuring the quarterback straight ahead that's the toughest place for a quarterback to deal with pressure when it comes straight at him the loss is back to the 47. third down and 22 for brister and the steelers christopher steps up throws complete to rodney carter partners short of the first down hit along the 31-yard line by gilbert well you wonder now if chuck noll won't attempt the field goal it would be about 55 yards here's another look rodney carter is a pass catching specialist coming across to the left of your screen he's just trying to get anderson in pretty good field goal position and uh nola's going to punch the football yeah he doesn't feel anderson can get it home from there his longest his career 55 yarder this is harry newsom knew some hangs of beauty high high and it comes down just in the end zone we mentioned we've got the top two punters in the league here today we'll be back with more right after this [Music] it's a great day to play football here at jack murphy stadium in san diego jay randolph with reggie rucker and you know we talked about webster in his great career the steelers with the football out there now webster's the cover boy today on game day here in san diego and the first time he's ever been on the cover of game day he deserves it that's a special honor for offensive lineman because they never get the recognition they deserve and certainly this is a gentleman who is headed for pro football hall of fame it's nice of an old wide receiver like you to mention that all right the chargers set to take the football after the punt that went into the end zone first and ten from the 20 and off going to gary's fumble and a fumble he got it back anderson coming up with it hard peterson 54 watch him here watch number 40 gary anderson slightly built at six feet 182 pounds runs right into hardy nickerson there nickerson number 54 doing an outstanding job really coming on strong and that linebacking core for the pittsburgh steelers 8 14 to go first quarter no score second down 10. [Music] alone may have audible here trouble another fumble and the steelers say they have it wait till they unravel and we get the indication but the steelers think they have the football no they don't number 78 tim johnson was down there on it looked like dallapor was able to get it now coming out of center it appears that malone never does have this football sometimes you might hit the knee or the guard or the center might step back on you but i don't think anything happened just then let's take another look at it he just doesn't get this football fortunately number 61 ken dalafor right there gets on the football that's big trouble for san diego third down and nine [Music] 89 in motion is flutie malone's got time throws up the middle overthrows the intended receiver jamie holland number 81 the pass too tall for holland at the 40-yard line woodruff had the coverage and when you look at uh malone and you think that he has all of the ingredients to play quarterback that's one of the problems doesn't have the kind of accuracy that you would like jay that ball was too tall we call that a hospital ball because if that receiver touches that he may go to the hospital here's a punch and up to the 48-yard line with it louis slips we'll be back in a moment a sky-high view of san diego's jack murphy stadium not a cloud in the sky as we have no score 7 10 to go first quarter steelers first and 10 from their own 49-yard line hodge and williams the running backs behind brister [Music] this is williams inside the 45 and down to the 43-yard line cedric figaro number 51 making the tackle well a big day for houston down in the dome and that's making it interesting over there chicago just getting by detroit green bay with a big win over minnesota they've got the seem to have the deal with them buffalo over the raiders giants winning dallas front of washington early on new orleans leading san francisco here we have no score second down and three at the 44. might have been a busted play brister's in trouble and he goes down oh i think he might have thought about getting rid of it and then was well he had the presence of mind not to throw the ball today because that would have been a penalty but i think here is the instance where he's relying too much on his ability and in the national football league you'll find that those defensive ends can outrun quarterbacks he should have taken the football when he had nothing there just dropped to the ground well it was obviously a busted play for him browner and wilson putting the pressure on this is a tough situation for pittsburgh because now you have to contend with leslie o'neil never 91 and lee williams never 99 williams the top sacking defensive end in the league rodney carter 24 is in there he's going to go long downfield lips and incomplete as he tried to deliver it to him at the 12-yard line roy bennett had the coverage back there just outstanding coverage by the corner roy bennett number 23. louis slips who's been burning secondary recently last week he had an 85-yard fourth touchdown a 60-yard afford touchdown it's just a speed pattern right here roy bennett incredible coverage he's looking back for the football and that ball does hit the hands of lewis lips but i think he was out of bounds harry newsome to do the punting lionel little train james takes it in at the seven and the train is trying to find some running room he got it back out to the 16-yard line a 51-yard punt we have five minutes 37 seconds left to play no score here in san diego pittsburgh fans will remember him so will a lot of backs around the national football league and a former wide receiver from cleveland mean joe i remember running a reverse against pittsburgh one year and i looked up and the guy that tackled me was joe green and i looked and i said what are you doing downfield but that was his legacy he would pursue you all over the field nice man yes he is chargers have been able to pick up only two yards rushing so far in this first quarter anderson is the single setback coming in motion quinn early malone's got a lot of time out to anderson anderson breaking out to the 23-yard line stop made by nickerson number 54. mark malone coming in today with a 52.1 percent passing percentage in my mind i think they overuse gary anderson as you take a look at al saunders you know he was born in london england became a naturalized citizen at the age of 13. that's his son behind him right there who handles the chords for the headsets for him second down and two anderson doesn't get it hit right along the 25-yard line again hardy nickerson making a fine play continuing on uh with gary anderson anderson is just an all-purpose halfback but the problem is he's about 182 pounds and they i think when i say they overused him they exposed him to the defense too much al saunders in the conversation we had with him yesterday jay said we'd really like to feature a big running back and be able to use gary anderson in certain roles and situation substitutions he would be more effective that way and now it's third down and one [Music] [Applause] sends spencer in motion and the handoff to rhettand redden getting to about the 25-yard line very very close he got the first down david little nickerson along with larry griffin we're all there to make the stop we've got a iso of the big guy from california nickerson is second year watch him pursue you see him watching his keys looking for the hole the runner will pick and once he makes that decision he gets into that hole gets his shoulder square and he doesn't allow the runner to get any unnecessary yardage first down at the 26 yard line three and a half to play first quarter we're scoreless malone giving it to anderson he almost broke it for a score he gets it to the 44-yard line it was dwayne woodruff who got him from behind a 19-yard pickup one of the keys to this run by anderson was the block by number 20 barry written but watch the flash coming right through the middle number 40 gary anderson he's such a dangerous player here's another look at it you'll see number 20 barry redden go in there and double team that keeps the nose tackle from getting any help on the play good block by rosado number 66 the center 245 to go in this first quarter first down at the 44. malone straight back has lots of time throws complete to anderson short of the first down but in the pittsburgh territory at the 48-yard line a pickup of eight cornell gowdy the strong safety number 29 there to make the tackle once again they go to number 40 and i can understand it because he's so talented but i think that the reason why this guy is hurt so much is because he just doesn't have the frame the body the strength jay to take the kind of pounding that he takes on every play here come the chargers and they go back to their short yardage situation with just early split wide to the right spencer's set on the wing left that's revenue right back up there and redden gets it and doesn't get the first down they were looking for him david little number fifties spelled that one out little out of florida seventh round jaff pick back in 81 a top tackler inside linebacker well david little number 50 has been the mainstay on this defense there he is making the real good tackle on barry redden 88 tackles coming into the ball game today the brother of former all-pro larry little who used to play for the miami dolphins he took over for a fellow named lambert big shoes to fill third and two at the 48. malone has to get rid of it quickly he completes it to jamie holland i don't think he got the first down little number 50 put the pressure on that's why malone had to hurry sometimes when things don't go well it's not always the quarterback now here jamie holland a young receiver shouldn't jump for this ball watch this see there's no need right there to do that because what happens is he takes himself away from the first down he should have been able to catch that football keep his feet on the ground and make a first down they're going to go for it i don't blame him because you know this is a leon sphinx bowl you ain't got nothing to lose fourth and one we're inside the minute mark of this first quarter scoreless anderson and spencer in the backfield spencer in motion to give going to wrestling dave megan that was not anderson but rhett guess who was in there again hardy nickerson 54. well they like this player hardy nickerson he's very active he's very quick he makes hits and one thing about inside linebacker is you want a player that makes hit that that'll hit and the tackle will stop the runner look at this see that runner goes no further than where nickerson puts his shoulder pads on his body steelers take over they have it at their own 47. it's a great this is a great time to go deep when you've had a big turnover like that i would always want to go home right walking and lips are the wide receivers for brister brister throwing out for williams and right off his fingertips so we caught that football that was a good read by bobby brister because the steelers were thinking deep they sent both lifts and lock it deep and the back side of the backfield short that was the checkoff for brister he read the coverage properly through the ball of williams williams should have caught the ball he could have gained five or six yards easily lips had more receiving yards 166 last week in houston and he had all of last season and it's lips and lockets set to the left side 36 seconds left in this first period the pitch comes back to highs hodges across the 50. fights his way to the 47. tackle made by leonard coleman also joe campbell in there if there's if there's one player that has helped this offense come back for pittsburgh it's number 33. merrell hodge hodge eliminated the need to bring in a running specialist a pass receiving specialist a blocking specialist hodge is the kind of player that can do all of those things he isn't spectacular but he's the kind of back that you can rely on and you can build a solid offense around him we come to the end of the first quarter no score here in san diego [Music] you remember the steelers aaron jones went off earlier injury to his right knee he will not play anymore today third down and six the steelers at the 48 yard line of the chargers as we start the second period [Music] penalty marker down and bubby brister really had to hurry pressure was put on by gary plummer number 50 coming from the outside linebacker slot trying to get it to carter i think and as we mentioned the penalty flag thrown the first penalty of the day fred silva the referee right tackle illegal motion decline fourth down fourth down for the steelers hunch elkin the right tackle moving on the play it's unfortunate that toonch ilkin gets called here for moving because they're rarely mentioned unless they commit a foul but ilkin number 62 is the finest steelers offensive lineman right now i think he's one of the best tackles in the game even though he's under publicized newsome with the boot little james the train lionel gets it to the 15-yard line white stone down there to make the tackle 38-yard punt and this chargers will take it just shy of their 15-yard line in newsom the steelers have the top putter in the national football league for the sixth week take a look at the statistics for the first quarter of play minus 15 yards passing for the pittsburgh steelers in this first quarter san diego mark malone who led pittsburgh to the playoffs in 84 and 85 doing the quarterbacking [Music] play action to the right side and down he goes 54 hardy nickerson would not be denied of making that tackle i think somebody blew a pattern here because malone after the play fake was looking for someone to throw the football to there was nobody on the right side i'm sure they wouldn't run a naked bootleg down around this see now watch the face now he's looking for someone to throw the football to there's just nothing going on down there and harley nickerson's too quick for malone second down and let's call it 11 a loss of one holland coming out to the left side [Music] and up the middle there he goes gary anderson oh rod richardson race and coming to make the play was darren jordan the rookie out of northeastern 36 yards on the run they went back to that play jay because they had a lot of success with it in the first quarter outstanding block at the point of attack number 66 watch rosado number 66 good block by number 61 ken dala for reading once again comes inside and this guy is quick and dangerous in the open field but i'll tell you something number 26 rod woodson is out there and he's probably going to catch everybody that breaks away almost everybody at least boy jordan at 6 1 2 35 he can move he can run first and 10 at midfield [Applause] penalty marker goes down maybe yes it is too much time number sixteen sunday lost to the bengals 27 to 10 at cincinnati they had seven penalties for 88 yards in the first half and this penalty puts the ball back at the 45-yard line oh what a day here jay you were asking me why don't we live why doesn't everybody say well of course not everybody does live here if you drive from here up to la jolla most people are there pretty country yeah first and 15. [Music] steelers for that win over houston trying to do another job here today and that pass could have been caught by quinn early early went high into the air wayne woodruff 49 david little 50 and nickerson 54 were all moving in on him this is a very difficult pass to catch because you're running at top speed one direction the ball is thrown behind him watch the ball is going to be thrown to the left of the screen the ball is going to be thrown left up early who's running the other way that's very difficult pass to catch although as a professional receiver you should make that kind of catch glad you said that 12 54 left in the first half second down and 15 from the 45 gary anderson getting the call and not getting much anderson who started this day with a 4.4 rushing average led the team in 87 with 1196 all-purpose yards tackle made by greg carr number 91 car in there now at a linebacker spot al saunders has sought balance in the san diego chargers offense they used to be of course there coryell and throw the football almost on every down but when he took over they wanted to establish an ability to run the football knowing that you have to be able to run the football to control the game in the national football league and that's what he's seeking to do gain more balance in this offense malone out of the shotgun on third and 13. [Music] malone scrambling and throwing and getting it to holland holland's down at the 20 the 15 and out of bounds at the eight eight-yard line delton hall ran him out a 45-yard hookup malone doing an excellent job of avoiding the pressure and getting that pass away the charges field they had drafted the fastest two men in the draft in 87 and 88 jamie holland was the fastest player in the draft in 87 and anthony miller was the fastest player in the draft in 88 now watts coming right of your screen to the left malone gets away from trouble good catch here by holland now watch holland number 86 from ohio state just blinding speed he makes this catch on the move see and now he's on the run and he doesn't have to slow down against the football and makes the big play for san diego first and goal to go from the eight yard line penalty marker goes down too much time yep malone was trying to audible and he didn't have enough time to do it number 16. see that may be the problem with knowing that defense having played in pittsburgh so long he knows the defenses that they get into down there and what he was trying to do was take advantage of something that he saw and maybe outsmarted himself a little bit there well sometimes teams can work mind games against former players that are in key roles it's first and goal to go now from the 13. pitch back fake reverse that's anderson holding on and getting down to the six yard line little number 50 making the tackle if there's any player that gary anderson reminds me of if i think back it has to be the great lenny moore because they have about the same bodybuild you take a look at anderson here as lenny moore did a slight frame but watch the power as he comes through here he's going to break a couple of tackles and he does so many things out of the backfield runs catches sweeps takes it up inside i think he's just an all-around great talent it reminds you of lenny moore he reminds me a little of gail sayre ah good company on second and goal to go into the end zone for the touchdown it's darren flutie flutie's second touchdown of the season and the chargers are on top and did you hear the cannon they haven't heard the cannon here much this year because they haven't been scoring any touchdowns that's only the second touchdown pass of the season for the san diego charges my how times have changed the other one had been flown thrown to anthony miller miller that's right the point after by steve deline is up and it is good and the chargers are on top seven to nothing over the steelers take another look at it here it's just a delay by darren flutie the brother of doug flutie that's down [Music] well that picture there is a flying picture furnished by topshop on hand our nbc sports paraphernalian regalia high in the sky above jack murphy stadium the line ready to kick off dwight stone 20 and rod woodson number 26 back to receive they've had two kickoff returns for touchdowns this year have the steelers the first time that's ever happened in chuck knowles tenure that's woodson picking it up at the 10 finding room in the middle to the 20 breaks away to the 25. at the 25-yard line roy bennett number 23 making the tackle and the steelers down 7-0 with 11 minutes to go in this first half we'll put it in play of course rod woodson returned 192 as you mentioned earlier jay and the other one was returned 92 yards last week by dwight stone in that houston ball game dallas over washington 24-17 washington completely out of it this year elvis patterson limping off for the chargers brister is one for four passing [Music] williams in the backfield [Music] whisker with a lot of time now going to have to run out of there good coverage downfield and down he goes at the 30-yard line cedric figaro up ending him number 51. mr losing his helmet well there was a lot of time to throw the football and i'm just not sure if this is what brister should be doing or whether noah wants him to do this now watch the protection see the protection is good outstanding protection now step up in the pocket he steps up in the pocket he can't find anybody so he starts to run now you have to get down here now watch him try to run outside see this that goes a little bit beyond what i think quarterbacks should do take what you got and get down second down and five [Music] the tight end comes in motion they give it to williams williams to the 33-yard line short of the first down stopped by joe phillips number 75 and mike charles 71 the one thing about brister and that it has been his history since he has taken over the reigns of the quarterback for the steelers is that he makes big plays and even though he has some problems here and there he's inexperienced this is only his uh 10th or 11th game that he's ever started so he's still a young learning quarterback but he does have the ability to suddenly hit you with the big play third down and three from the 33. [Music] hodge is the single setback [Music] that's carter going in motion brister throws too high for carter carter was there and would have had the first down as leonard coleman 31 the corner played soft but the pass much too high the ball sailed on bubby bubby brister was backing up just a little bit as he let that thing go i don't think he was really set that time and of course rodney carter had run a great route and was open out there in the sideline pattern harry newsom is fourth year out of wake forest 45.7 average his fourth punt coming up lionel james downfield [Music] a line drive spiral james going back at the 16. james breaks out at the 30 35 gets to the 41-yard line 50-yard punch 25-yard return tackle was made by with reggie rucker jay randolph at san diego's jack murphy stadium the chargers doing the job right now leading at seven to nothing and off to anderson anderson to the 42-yard line upended by greg carr number 91 have eight minutes and 50 seconds left to play in the first half a six-yard pass malone to flutie at the 11-14 mark of this second quarter has given them a seven-nothing lead 10-minute ticker new orleans with the lead up the coast over san francisco so far the chargers plan has been just to isolate gary anderson and get the football to him in as many ways as possible second down and nine malone throwing to anderson slides across the 45 to the 46-yard line where david little makes the tackle talking with al saunders yesterday as you had alluded to earlier reggie he says that anderson could really be a great role player for him as he's coming off now that's the problem for them is they have to use him more than they want as you indicated yeah that's a flatter in a flattering sense because what they want to do is they want to keep him around for a full season and let him handle the plays in which he gets into the open field and can make big plays for the chargers three wide receivers set to the right side for malone and malone throws complete and it's very close to the first down quinn early making the catch dwayne woodruff with the tackle it looked like he got the first down quinn early out of iowa this fellow is a very talented artist i've seen some of the work that he did when he was at the university of iowa let me paint this picture for you jay here's quinn early number 87 right at the 50-yard line gets up looks back into that sun makes a good catch tries to get away but you know they have three really talented young wide receivers they're like four three four three five and four four in speed so you know they think big things are on the horizon for these three guys well for early he may get a chance to start a picture at that talent show we've got coming up on super bowl sunday that's going to be something very special uh going to have representatives from every team in the league doing a talent uh and he might start a picture at the beginning and we go back two or three times and take a look at it coming up no i won't be at the senior skins but some very good players will led by a man named arnold palmer on first down malone and it is complete that's jamie holland another first down very close to it yep they picked up enough for the first down at the 38-yard line rod woodson number 26 there along with tim johnson who put pressure on number 78 here is the isolated view of holland jamie holland once again right now mark malone is doing the things that he does best now he isn't playing outside of his abilities he's taking the guys that are open and he's not passing up an open receiver to make a big play he's taking a good safe possession pass and that's working for san diego right now quinn early is set out wide to the right steelers in a nickel first and ten at the 38-yard line and here comes anderson down across the 35 penalty marker thrown in late anthony henton number 96 made the tackle as long as malone can get four five six yards from anderson on the run on first down he is going to be in control of this football game the chargers want to prevent that third and seventh situation third and eight 26 defense personal foul unnecessary roughness 15 yards first down call against rod woodson woodson a 94-day hold out 16 passes defense coming in today this is a fine athlete out of purdue but he costs his club big yardage here with a personal foul ball is down at the 19-yard line first down for the chargers they're leading at seven to nothing we have 6 15 to play in the first half [Music] to the far side malone with time throwing wide open and with the ball taking it down inside the tent is darren flutie flutie who caught the touchdown pass 13-yard pickup malone to flutie tackled by woodrow 49 and hinton 96. first down and goal to go coming up here it is reggie with all that great speed on the outside flutie is able then to just maneuver inside in the middle of the field pick out the open spaces and just settle down mark malone experienced as he is is finding him and getting the football tournament see it's nothing fancy they're just taking what the steelers are giving them right now early is wide to the right colin set to the left side they put anderson in motion here to the near side give it up the middle to retin redden gets near the five-yard line david little again in the middle number 50 the former all-american from florida doing a job there's a line of scrimmage the offensive line the four free agents not very talented or heralded but they're getting the job done today david little number 50 right there in the middle of everything just stacking it up doing his job meeting that runner right in the hole malone has six consecutive pass completions second down and goal [Music] give to anderson and he is the goal line david little stopped him right at the line just short i thought he'd reach the plane reggie but he didn't get it in there i have seen this guy do some incredible things once he got to the goal line as a matter of fact there's a promo that they run for the nfl where the halfback dives and does the somersault into the end zone watch that lurching and that leaping and that agileness that he has he actually got it to the line but the ball was not on the ground and when he is tackled that's car 91 that was david little that was holding him on for dear life that's a touchdown there touchdown for mark malone on the quarterback sneak malone scoring against his former teammates and the cannon is fired for the second time this afternoon i think these people probably believe the cannon is broken because they haven't heard the cannon here that much particularly in first half twice this team came into this ball game averaging 7.8 points per game per home contest that's anemic and of course they've already scored two touchdowns here against the steelers steve deline with the extra point out of the hold by mojenko it is good 3 45 to play we're in the first half the chargers lead 14 to nothing malone has been making it happen for these chargers who have the lead early on you know what i was telling you earlier that uh you can't tell me that mark malone isn't just ecstatic about this opportunity and would like to beat these steelers more than anything in the world when i was traded from new england to cleveland the first thing i wanted to do was play against the new england patriots and do well and what happened when you did we played them and we won all right the kickoff coming down [Music] woodson at the 15. 25 steps out of bounds up near the 30-yard line bennett number 23 was there to make the play back to the attack will come the steelers with bobby brister and it's the same old story for pittsburgh and this is what has happened to them for the most part they get behind and they have to abandon their running game nine plays 59 yards five minutes and 19 seconds malone involved in both scores lock it to the far side lips comes to the near side [Music] and the pass is complete to lock it lock it breaking away all the way down to the 41-yard line first down sam seal number 30 on the tackle a 29-yard pickup and the other thing that you do in a game like this is you evaluate personnel the steelers have been looking at charles lockett over the past few weeks he gets another start here they're finding that this guy can play watching him makes the catch tough catch he's spinning around breaks a couple of tackles and almost takes this thing the distance [Music] you see the time remaining we're right at the three minute mark a little delay hodge hodge has a first down inside the 30-yard line good block by german eddie dawson the rookie out of kentucky pickup of 12 keith browner 57 on the tackle i think the steelers just showed up to play football i mean the san diego charges and the pittsburgh steelers both with four and ten records both having a lot of problems there's no reason why the steelers should start this game as flat as they did new orleans by three up at san francisco rams by six here the chargers lead 14 nothing and it is complete at the 20-yard line charles lockett lockett has made two fine catches in this drive he caught 17 coming into today's game lock it out of cal state long beach a number three draft choice once again it's a quick slant the quarterback takes three steps and fires this ball you've got to be looking quick locker gets his head and he's looking at the football very early that's why he's able to come up with the catch sam seal trying to grab that ball away from him and he didn't we've got a timeout as we have the two-minute warning 14-nothing the chargers lead the steelers time frank before to lay some heavy words on you about the world of sport i'm ahmad paul and gail and you'll be updated on all of the activities in the national football league on this sunday 15 chuck noll looking out is club down 14 to nothing second down and one should be an interesting call and opportunity for brister [Music] lips and lock it both set to the left side [Music] play action and a little toss and it came up short he had him wide open rodney carter and had frister been able to deliver it it would have been a touchdown no question about that pressure from leslie o'neill number 91 beautiful football play completely fooled the charges it's a crisscross action here misdirection brister comes up see he's still backing up and throwing the football he needs to really gather himself and set and throw that football to cardinal see watch him see he's throwing the football going backwards if the ball loses velocity and it doesn't get the carter who's standing out there catching the cold could have been a touchdown third down and one and getting the football merle hodge and hodge banging all the way down to the six yard line a 14-yard pickup i'll tell you something i like this player i think he's going to be a very good player in this league number 33 merrell hodge from idaho state can do a lot of things watching behind this excellent block straight up the middle number 33 breaking tackles good run by merrell hogs dear dad we made our toughest jump yet at dawn i was kind of nervous we all were and then i remembered when you told me that real courage is putting your fear aside and doing your job you see dad here in the army the things i'm learning will help me get the most out of life and the best from myself dad we were really something today i know you'd be proud [Music] 143 to play in this first half taking that uh pass by bristol one in which he was backing up a little further they say that everything is accelerated so so much when you're in the past pocket i mean i've talked to quarterbacks and they have said that and all you have to do really is just take your time and make the play happen lips and locket again set to the left side [Applause] [Music] brister steps out of bounds at the three wanted to try to go into the end zone couldn't find anybody there bird and phillips applying the pressure looked like he might have been looking for carter well that's the guy to look for number 24 let's see if we can't find him my question number 52 comes back and gets a good block on hinkle and then there is brister who there's carter right there in the right hand corner of the screen but that was a wise decision by number six buddy bristol not to throw it and wise to get out of bounds [Music] second down from the three oh they're gonna get flagged for this yep the handoff going to hodge but the penalty markers are down there was movement well hodge was moving because he was going to get the football and that's usually the case when a young back is down around the goal line if he moves that's just his anxiety watch this on the right side of the screen can't see it two men moving at the same time illegal motion five yards there it is number 33 now see kenneth number 81 on the right side of the screen he's he's eligible to move he's legal but now you see number 33 on the left side of your screen moving at the same time because he's getting the football and that's what happens when you're young the penalty puts the ball back out at the eight yard line where it is second in goal to go a minute and a half to play he'll probably come back and make a great play now and off going to lips oh he had he had hearts open now he throws and it is intercepted intercepted by gilberg [Applause] the steelers missing a scoring opportunity as the chargers come away with the football and when you look at this tomorrow you'll say that was just a terrible play call but that was actually an outstanding play call the conception of it was just beautiful coming out of the backfield right now lips needs to throw the football earlier and he has hearts wide open this is lips's second attempt earlier earlier this season he had a 13-yard completion well i'd say he who hesitates is lost is that what they used to say they still do you cannot throw that football late in the middle of the field see now you can't see highs but hodge is open there's no one uh there's the legs of hearts he's wide open out there but now lips throws the football back to the middle of the field no velocity on it it's just it's just unfortunate that he made that decision oh the steelers missed the opportunity and lips shaken up on the play a six yard touchdown pass malone to flutie got the scoring underway at 11 14 of the second period and then a bit later on the chargers march yards in nine plays malone going in on the quarterback sneak 345 remaining and it was 14 to nothing and that's the score on the board right now as the steelers miss the opportunity let's see who gets lit oh wow wow that's got it that's a that's that takes you out of a football game that kind of shot because once you raise your pads once you raise your elbows above your shoulders a football player has no protection in here now watch as lips comes around number 83 he'll throw the football and he'll be completely unprotected let's see who it is can we get that number looked like roy bennett it looked like number 23. they're continuing to attend to lips what happens in a situation like that jay not only can you have the wind knocked out of you which is just a feeling of death in itself but also you can crack or break ribs and watch it again let's get rid of the ball now watch your shoulder see that whole area is exposed that's number 23 roy bennett and he gets this thrift lips excuse me right in the midsection bennett used to be in the cfl went to school at jackson state that's a good sign lips is walking off under his own power reggie we've had some interesting games played earlier of course and we'll update everybody at halftime but the victory today for houston the bengals have a spot clinched but they still now are in a situation where they could lose that division title over there right if cincinnati loses to washington and houston beats cleveland next week 14 to nothing chargers see how they want to play it with 125 remaining in this first half anderson across the 25 puts his head down gets to the 27 yard line before david little and larry griffin make the stop i remember this guy at the university of arkansas this is lewis lips from southern mississippi number one draft choice of the steelers and he appears to be okay 14-0 the steelers aren't okay at this point in the proceedings second down and two that's anderson again [Music] david little again and the faithful here don't like the play calling in the final stages of this first half but i think al saunders and his squad would be happy to go away with a 14 nothing lead now they've called a let's watch number 40 anderson once again following number 61 dalla four number six broderick thompson those two offside offensive linemen get into that hole that's an example of that counter trey jerry rome is the offensive coordinator here he was the offensive coordinator in washington he has brought this two back offense excuse me it's too tight in one back offense to the san diego charges if you watch these charges they will resemble the redskins play for play that interception a short time ago for the chargers was the 13th interception of the year for them nfl live coming up at halftime the chargers leading at 14 to nothing chargers have two timeouts remaining the ball at the 32-yard line first down coming up of course early on in this telecast we told you about the glory days of these two teams and like dan phelps charlie joyner hooking up here for the chargers and brad shaw on that great crew that he worked with in pittsburgh but right now the chargers are showing some very good football that was little train james making that catch at the 40-yard line hit by david little and mark malone is as accurate as i've ever seen in his career i mean he's hitting everybody that's been the wrap on him he's had all of the qualities for a top-flight quarterback but they say that he has been erratic as a thrower james again complete to the 49-yard line number 26 lionel james holds the nfl record for all-purpose yardage set three years ago greg lloyd made the tackle and they called timeout with 18 seconds left in this first half they're probably trying to figure out a way to get a player two away and give an opportunity for steve deline to kick a field goal malone has been phenomenal you and and i still re to reiterate i think this game means more to him than any that he has played how else does a guy who is oh and six as the starter here suddenly come out and be this spectacular and it just coincidentally happens to be against his former team he played at arizona state number one draft of pittsburgh in 80. well the chargers have some nostalgia as we've mentioned dan fouts who was honored here recently this fella had great touch didn't he yeah he also had a couple of great receivers too like number 18 charlie joyner we have first and 10 at the 49 yard line speaking of 18 18 seconds remaining in the second quarter in motion quinn early to the far side down goes malone where's the football and i slow to get up he looked like maybe he tripped over his own man coming back out of there a call timeout with 12 seconds remaining he did he tripped over number 66 dan rosado rosado number 66 one of those players that made this football team as a replacement player last year and then hung on you know they they gave us an interesting stat about this football team the san diego chargers yesterday in 1986 they had 17 draft choices and only one man is left from that draft isn't that incredible leslie o'neil and he has missed virtually all of the last two seasons with a knee injury so they they've gone from a talent rich football team to a town four football team and in order to get back where they want to get they've got to build the foundation and that is that offensive line and they have to make a determination about stability at quarterback don masik the chargers number one centers on ir rosado playing that position rosado a puerto rican former dolphin from northern illinois now out of the shotgun on second and 14. just look for james lionel james inside the 45-yard line they hurry it up hardy nickerson made the tackle and they're not going to get a play away halftime here at san diego's jack murphy stadium after a scoreless first quarter the chargers get two touchdowns in the second period and lead the steelers 14 to nothing nfl live and halftime activities are coming up score again 14 to nothing we'll be back right after these messages [Music] bob costa's back along with paul mcguire big first half for mark malone against his former mates he runs for one he throws for another he completes 13 of 16 on the chargers lead 14-nothing at the half other games underway at present the 49ers in the battle for first place in the nfc west leading the saints 14-10 joe montana has just thrown a 68-yard touchdown pass to john taylor earlier he had run two yards for a touchdown montana himself had and san francisco got a td from roger craig so the 49ers have now tacked on a touchdown and they lead 21 to 10 late in the second quarter at home the saints could be in jeopardy of losing their third consecutive game john robinson's rams might be on their way to a 9-6 record they lead at home over the falcons 19-0 also just a few moments before halftime jim everett just hit henry ellard with a touchdown pass to build the lead to 19-0 now these are finals from earlier today the oilers were all over cincinnati 41-6 warren moon threw for two touchdowns and mike rozier had a big day he ran for three tds 126 yards in all this is the last of the three watch this a 180 degree turn back the other way in he goes for the touchdown and the oilers romp in the house of payne 41-6 not only was their offense clicking but obviously they completely denied boomer osias and company anything offensively and they had been the top rated offense in the afc i think the most most important stat in this whole game is other than the score is the fact that the cincinnati bengals 30 points a game or better probably less than 50 yards in the first half total offense that's incredible i mean when you have a team that's that powerful and you go up against the defense and houston's defense is pretty good it's not a great defense but totally shot that kind of an offense down it was nice to watch though houston now in good shape for a wild card outside shot at the division title if they can be cleveland if washington beats cincinnati next week nothing is assured in terms of the division title for the bengals but they have wrapped up at least a wild card chicago has sewn it up in the nfc central they have won the division title they have clinched the best overall record in the nfc at 12-3 they'll be home for any playoff game they're involved in here's how they did it down 12 10 eight seconds to play at soldier field 32-yard field goal by kevin butler mike ditka exults and on the sideline in a moment you'll see wayne fonts the lion coach his team almost pulled the upset they lose it in the waning seconds 13-12 and the difference after their last touchdown they led 12-10 but they had the point after blocked otherwise it might have been an overtime game as it is the bears win 13-12 and then incredibly they watch as green bay finishes off minnesota at lambeau field 18-6 the packers are three and twelve and yet two of their three victories this year have come at the expense of the vikings here's don makowsky he came in in relief of an ineffective randy right he hits patrick scott for a 12 touchdown it was a big day for packers safety tim harris he had three sacks once he got wade wilson in the end zone for a safety and so the vikings who perhaps were looking ahead to their monday night showdown in a week at home with the bears now are not even assured a wild card and that game against the bears which might have brought them the division title have they been able to win today is in no way for the division title that's been wrapped up by the bears and they might be hanging by a thread for the wild card we have to see how things break they lose today 18-6 at lambeau field buffalo one at home they beat the raiders 37-21 buffalo now 12-3 and they've got the best record in the afc and the inside track on home field advantage in the playoffs there thurman thomas the rookie out of oklahoma state heisman trophy winner barry sanders school goes 37 yards off left tackle for a first half touchdown and the bills have it all their own way before their eighth consecutive sellout crowd they sold out every home game this year they did it today despite snow flurries and 11 degree temperatures and by a small margin they break the overall league attendance record which had been set by the lions in 1980 at the silver dome paul one thing about the buffalo bills they proved not only to the people around the country but also to themselves bob that they're a good football team and i'll tell you why they were 11-1 go into cincinnati and lose i mean and it was ugly then they go down to tampa lose to tampa bay and it was ugly and it was ugly and then come back and then win this football game they lost this it would have been grotesque oh besides that it wouldn't look good yeah i liked it why is it that you're taking my time i don't jump in on your stuff oh we're getting testy now here okay mark malone has not only hurt the pittsburgh steelers when he was playing with the steelers he now hurts him when he's playing against the steelers can i use that you did i know it was one of your notes and you were afraid to use it i wasn't going to say that because that wouldn't have been a nice thing to say you can get on with it now we're going to hurry you you've taken as much time as you'd like is that when i'm together all right perhaps some of these folks are interested in the rest of the scores kansas city lost to the giants at giant stadium to score their 28-12 the chief's limited to four nick lowry field goals phil sims hooked up twice with mark navarro for touchdowns a 12-yarder in the first half and this 24-yarder in the second half the giants win it with a lot of help from joe morris 31 carries 140 yards second consecutive week over 100 yards for him the giants take their record to 10 and 5 and they will wrap up the nfc east if they beat the jets at giant stadium technically it's a home game for the jets but they play in new jersey next week and if the giants win that game they clinch the nfc east no matter what happens to anybody else any place else the cowboys finally have ended their 10 game losing streak they have won for the third time in 15 tries they beat the redskins 24 to 17 with steve palure throwing three touchdown passes all of them to the former miami hurricane michael irvin this was the longest of the three a 61-yarder doug williams had a 40-yarder to ricky sanders mark griffin threw a 55-yarder to terry orr rippon had come in after williams was shaken up in the third quarter but the redskins lose it dropped to seven and eight they're completely eliminated from the playoff picture and the cowboys prevail at rfk 24-17 prior to today the new england patriots were the only one of the 28 teams in the national football league that had never won an overtime game in fact they were 0 and 10 in overtime until this moment jason starovski nails a 27-yard field goal in ot and the patriots go to 9-6 they keep their wild card hopes alive they beat the tampa bay buccaneers who have a very tough defense last week the bucks upset buffalo they almost did it today in foxborough but the patriots prevail 10-7 interestingly tampa bay won the coin toss to start overtime and they elected to kick off the decision for which the patriots made them pay when we come back frank the board will join us for this halftime essay and we'll do it following these messages from your local station [Music] san diego shutting out pittsburgh after the first half of play here at jack murphy stadium jay randolph along with reggie rucker before we get to the highlights of the first half i feel like entertainment tonight but i better mention it it is news around here uh ralph banerska who used to be the place kicker here is going to be the new male host of wheel of fortune so he's found work i wanted that job working with vanna huh oh yeah all right let's tell you about this first half up to now it has really been dominated by a team that's played well this afternoon the san diego chargers well i think you have to credit mark malone with knowing exactly what's wrong with the pittsburgh steelers defense he knows that they don't have a pass rush and he also knows that they're having trouble with coverage in the linebacker poor so he has thrown most of his balls to backs coming out of the backfield the kickoff is sponsored by budweiser the king of beers and down it comes to rob woodson woodson's at the 15 out of the 20 steps out of bounds at the 24-yard line knocked out of bounds by ken woodward the linebacker jeffrey jackson also in there to make the play and spot the ball at the 23. well looking at the stats look at passing mark malone 13 of 16. he has had flawless pass protection he is getting outstanding running from gary anderson in the charges of dominating this game steelers missed the golden opportunity to score late in that first half locket and lips both set to the left side for bubby brister coming in motion lips handoff goes to hodge and hodge doesn't get much a yard or two as they unravel out of there underneath the pile big number 71 mike charles the left tackle cedric figaro 51 also there a 14 lead jay will improve your defense immeasurably everybody begins to take chances they gamble they can do things that they couldn't afford to do if the game were tied so the steelers are going to have to get back into this ball game if they want to make the chargers defense play honestly second down and about seven over the middle it's complete that is warren williams for the first down at the 37-yard line plumber number 50 the linebacker making the tackle after a 10-yard pickup plummer out of california top tackler on this charger club a free agent in his third year that's the way to get started by brister get the football to some of your inside people your backs and your slot man because san diego is trying to take the outside people away they're eliminating lewis lips from the offense completely with double coverage that's williams williams banging across the 40. he gets near the 42-yard line stop made by leslie o'neill number 91 let's take a look at this now you'll see number 42 warren williams rookie from miami getting in good block by hodge once again good tackling by plumber and figaro those are pretty good linebackers they tackle the football very well lips at the bottom of the screen lock it out at the top second down and five from the 42. [Applause] it's complete the hodge hodge down the sideline he gets to the 41-yard line got the first down 17-yard pickup keith browner number 57. very good read by bubby brister his first look is to lewis lips on the slant now watch him look for lips inside lips is not there so he reads to pass outside to hearts now hard turns it up field and once again he's making those big plays catching the football out of the backfield i doubt if they're going to be able to get the football elites because san diego is really focusing in their coverage on lips somebody else is going to have to make the big plays that shot from nbc's top shot high in the sky above jack murphy stadium brister on the run throws long downfield and it is going to be intercepted coming back with it is gil bird birds still on the move all the way back to midfield 39-yard return a pass intended for warren with him for i think it was intended for lockett no let's be he wasn't intended well no he shouldn't have thrown it there's no way you should throw this football i mean i'm a big fan of this young man's potential and i like him and i think he's going to be an outstanding player but you can't have this you get rid of it there right right yeah you throw the football away it even takes a sec i mean there are three charges down there that's not that's not what you do gilbert's enjoying this isn't he and now bristol is going to take a lick right here what well you don't see it well see now he just throws it up first down for the chargers at midfield and it is incomplete intended for jamie holland coverage down there by woodruff woodruff right there with him malone certainly got what he was looking for was a man-to-man coverage woodruff though the veteran that he is recognized that holland was coming deep because colin came out of there smoking just straight speed straight away woodruff almost makes the interception here however he does defense the pass good play by dwayne woodruff holland came into today with 35 catches second down and 10. redden going in motion anderson breaking through inside the 40. larry griffin number 22 made the tackle 11-yard pickup we've got a look from high above at this very talented running back you get a chance to see how the holes open and express themselves to the runner number 40. now watch right behind number 65 there that's david richards with the good block and number 40 gary anderson good vision getting up inside richards is a rookie out of ucla first and 10 at the 39-yard line the handoff to quit early and the steelers read it very well indeed it was rod woodson who made the tackle he came over and got some help from larry griffin woodson out of purdue and he used his speed well here yeah they've got everything going left and suddenly they come back to quinn early coming to the right side of the screen there really isn't a very good play darren jordan number 55 plays it excellently they are never losing his position on the outside 11 minutes to play third quarter 14 nothing chargers anderson penalty marker goes down might have a holding call coming up keith gary on the tackle at the 36 yard line if you're going to look for one of the reasons why san diego is playing so well 66 offense holy holding against rosado still second down one of the reasons why they're playing so well jay is they've been able to stay away from a lot of penalties and they've also playing pretty error-free they're not turning the football over to pittsburgh we talked about those penalties in the first half at cincinnati last week how they plagued them let's remind you that we will be selecting the budweiser mvp for today's game at the conclusion of today's action chargers leading 14 to nothing facing second down and 18 now [Applause] holland going in motion to the far side malone comes out to anderson and he is brought down immediately gowdy made the play cornell gowdy number 29 who's moved to that starting spot at the strong safety had a thumb broken in week two donnie shell of course retiring he was a mainstay there at strong safety for a long time and watched the open field tackle by gowdy brings down a very difficult runner to bring down in the open field however anderson was just content to make that catch there's gotti it's now third and 22 as the steelers go into their prevent defense and malone will operate from the shotgun over the middle lionel james short of the first down as he got it to the 40-yard line a pickup of 13 woodson number 26 again there to make the tackle on james number 26. it's a good safe defense pittsburgh was willing to just give up the short pass like that make the tackle knowing that they would keep san diego out of field goal range good job by the steeler defense after the turnover woodson back to receive the punt that will come from mojenko a left-footed kicker out of michigan state they may be going after him here no hangs it high and it's into the end zone 39-yard punt we'll be back with more from san diego right after this first down standoff and reggie rucker with you from jack murphy's san diego stadium it is 14 to nothing the chargers here's the first score a six yard td pass malone to flutie that came at 11 14 of the second quarter on first and ten from the 20-yard line that's williams breaking out to the 30-yard line he got to the 31 and picked up a first down bency glenn number 25 on the stop the second score of the game came on a quarterback sneak by malone capping a 59-yard drive nine plays 345 left in the first half and then of course the steelers missed that opportunity when they drove down the field and gilbert came up with the first of two of his interceptions this afternoon he now has 17 in his career turnovers have stopped to steal us they actually do have a pretty good offense wrister gets on track to you first down from the 31-yard line back has a lot of time throws complete that is lips and lips comes up to the 45-yard line a 13-yard reception lips came into the day with 199 career catches so that's number 200 for the star out of southern miss and he is the second steeler ever to have 200 catches in his first five years of play he made a good move there to get away from coverage he was jammed inside that's hodge hodge fighting his way across midfield gary plummer number 50 on the tackle hodge out of idaho state very hard worker we mentioned gil bird with two interceptions there's the lips play that it was going to be a pass to merrell hodge that couldn't get rid of it early he threw it late and that was a mistake second down and five great job by this crew the video tape operators and our entire camera crew headed up by director andy rosenberg our producer today glen adamo errol hodge hit by lee williams number 99 and not much there for him let's call it no gain and it's going to be third down and four stealers bring their pass receiving specialists back into the ball game rodney carter number 24. then especially tough out of the backfield san francisco by 11 and the rams shutting out atlanta chuck noll much influenced by paul brown he played for the cleveland browns and also by sid gilman when he was an assistant here with the chargers 60 through 65 on third and four that's ouija thompson going in motion the rush is on they get it out the hodge hodge very close to the first down great effort by merrell hodge and brister is shaken up o'neill made the tackle on hodge they're close to the first down but i don't think they've got it i'll tell you what it's going to be very close because they do go with a right foot spot here now brister's in trouble they've got good pressure from joe campbell number 95 on the outside and he does get rid of the ball good move right there the fake outside and comes back inside now watch paws just take a couple of people with him really gets close to that spot but of course this is the thing to do go for it fourth down about a half a yard [Applause] thompson goes in motion he got it it's going to depend on the spot hodge carried that ball to the 45-yard line but i want to see where they spot it well at the last minute jay haas did reach out and extend the football right at about the 45-yard line as you were saying though it'll depend where they give him the knee down i think he's got it but they're going to check it that looks good enough to me i got good eyesight it's very close first measurement of the game a very important measurement coming up for the steelers who are down 14 to nothing 5 16 remaining third quarter first down pittsburgh steelers now you're moving you pick up a first down you're running the ball well here is the spot where i always wanted to say to the quarterback let's go play action fake and go deep make them think we're running you're bound to get maybe a man-to-man coverage on first down let's see if they don't do something like that lips to the near side lock it to the far side pump fake in trouble brister the ball will be placed at the 45-yard line george hinkle number 97 had a foot injury was on ir earlier came back last sunday and gets a big play here see that's what they wanted they were going deep to lips but as i said before they have got lips double covered he's going to have to look for someone else now there's the fake now he's looking deep for lips and he sees the double coverage he decides this time not to put the football up that's good judgment by bristol sometimes you have to take the sack first sack of his career for hinkle a rookie out of arizona rodney carter number 24 in the game hinkle or hodge excuse me fumble over there on the far sideline brister going for it and we'll wait till they unravel this one brister handed that ball off to hodge and they're conferring as to who has the football and whether the whistle blew this is too complicated to call and why worry about it you know who's going to take over here anyway instant replay here's number 33 merrell hart who does lose the football he that is a fumble picked up by joe phillips number 75 who gets crushed falls on the ground look at bristol going for it sticking his head in there and the ball is recovered by number 25 vinci glenn we'll take a timeout 4 26 remaining in the third quarter the chargers shutting out the steelers turnovers that tells the tale as the chargers lead at 14 to nothing doesn't matter whether you play at home or on the road when you give the football to the other guys and you're giving them more chances to score than you have and it's not going to work in your favor this steeler team on this sunday doesn't resemble that team that performed in the dome a week ago malone throwing and completing it to darren flutie his third catch of the afternoon he had one earlier for a touchdown david little number 50 on the tackle or little's been busy this afternoon for the steelers boston college is putting out some pretty talented possession receivers uh brian brennan at cleveland calvin edwards at dallas and of course now darren flutie here all basically similar in style second down and four from the 43. quinn early going in motion to the far sideline gary anderson getting the call gets to the outside at the 30 down to the 25 still going he's all the way to the 18-yard line good block by 61 dalla for 25-yard round over the right side lloyd number 95 on the tackle second back this year to gain over 100 yards against the steelers magnificent run but he does something here that i would think is illegal now watch him coming to the left of the screen he's going to put his hand on number 61 ken dalla for and push him right into the linebacker that's actually an illegal move there but he gets away with it and it's a beautiful run nonetheless icky woods of cincinnati is adding some here he was the other back who got more than 100 against the steelers anderson again he's down near the 12-yard line this guy has incredible feet his feet are so very fast when you have the quickness and the agility that he has in his lower body he can virtually stop and go in any direction he wants at any time seeing all those moves with his feet the tackler can't get set he doesn't know where the guy's going his fourth 100 yard game this year and he missed weeks six and seven with a leg injury gowdy and griffin making the last tackle second down two from the 11. [Applause] spencer going in motion and the handoff to barry retton who've come in there and reading right at the 10-yard line is smashed down by keith gary number 92. gary out of oklahoma number one draft pick in 81 he spent a couple of years in the canadian football league good tackle the steelers are really going to have to address that defensive line jay in the off season they have to get people there they've got to get more pressure on the passer and more talent along that defensive line third down and one [Applause] banging in there is very redden nothing well it's going to be very close david little again on the tackle number 50. royal cathcart is the replay official here today and the fine official he was as we look at this play again he tells us that uh what anderson was doing with that hand on the back of the man in front of him is not illegal what is it not illegal [Laughter] cathcart wouldn't know he's a fine official all right royal you got me there i'll get you later at the nine yard line they're going to have a measurement second of the afternoon yard line first down chargers a minute and a half to play third quarter chargers leading 14 to nothing going wide to the right quinn early colin set left anderson he gets to the seven again it's david little to make the tackle along with daryn jordan the rookie number 55. little's had a day eddie yeah he isn't one of those players that's going to give up i mean the last thing you want is for your team to just lay down and say oh that's it you know this end of the year you know we're not going anywhere but you saw number 50 there still working hard getting away from blockers getting up in the hole look at him giving instructions you know this is this thing isn't over for him second down [Applause] quinn early comes to the near side malone's got a lot of time now he's on the run throws back against the grain incomplete win early almost came up with it there again quite risky for the quarterback to after having this much time throw the football back into the middle of the field without anything on it you're gonna see him throw this thing across his body anybody could get in there and pick that off and go 100 yards that's a very dangerous play to make at that point in time i would agree third down and goal to go early goes out to the right side james 26 is in the backfield that's holland in motion 14-0 chargers and the pass comes out and it is at the six yard line the stop as james took it there and larry griffin was the first man to hit him he bounced away and then number 91 greg carr came in lone gets rid of this he sees the blitz coming now james number 26 at 156 170 pounds shows amazing strength there as larry griffin bounces off of him another look at it right here good one-handed catch by lionel train james after three quarters chargers lead 14 to nothing back after these messages from your local station 24-yard field goal attempt coming up for steve deline out of the hold of magenko and it is good [Applause] the opening seconds of the fourth quarter the chargers take the lead 17 to nothing oh it's jack murphy stadium the last time the steelers were shut out was on october the 19th of 1986 when new england beat them 34 nothing they're down right now 17 to nothing woodson coming out at the 10. that's it for the 20 slides through at the 25 and goes down around the 27-yard line we'll be back with more of the action from san diego with the chargers doing a job on pittsburgh that's a splendid shot from top shot high above this stadium and jay randolph and reggie rucker a few moments ago lionel james hit very hard down here and a shoulder problem they're going to take him for a precautionary x-ray here's the play that's a good shot he's only five six 170 pounds and probably lighter than that brisker throwing to the far sideline and completes it in fine fashion to lewis lips gilbert with the coverage over there bird already with two interceptions on the day the steelers need to move a little quickly now they need to conserve time they're behind 17 points they're gonna have to get scoring here the steelers need more home run people in their offense more people that can threaten the defense because you take away louis slips such as the charges are doing today there's no one else on the field that san diego fears lips going in motion play action brister comes back bigfoot williams down the sideline at the 40. at the 30 at the 20 and out of bounds at the 15-yard line and the penalty marker goes down 43 yards on the play got a great block by webster the veterans center helps spring williams down there that's the longest catch in warren williams career there's a flag down in the backfield now this is an intricate screenplay and on play like this you wonder if an offensive lineman doesn't get downfield and that's the only thing you really have to be concerned with when you design a play this way as warren williams 48 runs very fast mask tackle 63 illegal man downfield on the pass replay they're going to replay it well germany dawson the rookie out of kentucky who's half back now from injured reserve after having his knee scope and there's the call on the mask miller pat miller yeah it's pat miller oh it wipes out a very fine play for the steelers and they've just self-destructed all day long every time they get a big play they come right back and do something that destroys the game three turnovers and a very debilitating penalty right here for chuck knowles bunch gothard the tight end is set in motion it comes to rodney carter carter right at midfield short of the first down wrapped up by cedric figaro the middle linebacker number 51. no trouble with the steelers right now is they're doing a lot of stuff jay but they're not getting anything done and you know it's it's like taking two steps forward and two steps back they need to get everything going in the right in the same direction all at once here i mean uh bristol is going to have to take charge in that huddle and say come on guys we got to get this thing going everybody's got to do his part on second down and two brister calls on carter carter inside the 40 gets down near the 38 yard line 11-yard pickup got an end zone angle as the stop was made by figaro again if you look at the second half actually the steelers have done very well they're executing very crispy what number 60 is brian blankenship that's a very good block on cedric figaro and then rodney connor is really weaving and wheeling and dealing in there picking up the extra yardage they just got to eliminate the turnover in the offense first down at the 38. [Music] lips comes in motion little pass out to the right side to hodge hodges at the 30 at the 20 out of bounds boy he got a good block from craig wokeley number 73 and they spotted out of bounds at the 18 a pickup of 20. and i'll tell you i think pittsburgh can get back in this game because right now san diego looks a little winded they look a little tired to me that a lot of screen passes a lot of misdirection plays have winded the san diego defensive line and they have the charges spread out all over the field and you're seeing big plays time after time after time at the 18 first down for the steelers looking for their first points of the afternoon lips to the right side now there goes in motion there's a touchdown there and the pass to carter he didn't get the touch but it's going to be first and goal to go at the five a pickup of 14 on the play vincey glenn number 25 making the tackle help from gary plummer number 50. the chargers are trying to cover the steeler backs man-to-man with linebackers they can't do it rodney carter right there really puts an outstanding move on number 50 gary plummer gets back inside makes a very good catch san francisco up by 14. the rams shutting out atlanta that's carter [Applause] he didn't get much carter out of purdue who has been used a lot this year as a third down receiver 21 catches coming into today's game averaging 6.2 per carry 32 carries 198 yards before today they spot the ball at the three-yard line 12 minutes to play and you have to wonder if san diego didn't feel that well with 14-point lead at the half we can just settle down here and run the clock out and win this football game but pittsburgh won't quit they keep coming back [Applause] gothard again goes in motion the pass to gothard touchdown pittsburgh that's a rarity preston gothard who walked on at the university of alabama an excellent blocker been injured much of his career gets his first touchdown catch of this season i don't think a pittsburgh steeler tight end has caught a touchdown pass all year and probably haven't caught that many passes that is only his 12th catch of the year gary anderson with the point after out of the hold of newsome and the steelers battling back here the one good thing about this pass from britster is he gets it there in a hurry because the defender almost gets there but he doesn't gothard with his first touchdown catch of the year [Music] well last sunday in houston gary anderson missed an extra point his streak stopped at 202 tommy davis the nfl's all-time leader 234 anderson kicking off anthony miller miller's at the 15. and he gets it to the 23-yard line down there to make the stop number 90 tyrone stowe the reserve linebacker [Music] there's an interesting statistic reggie the scoring highs and lows on the year and the nfl average 282 points coming into today well on the ignominious side are san diego and pittsburgh ignominious i want to look that up first and ten a handoff going to anderson gary anderson getting out to about the 27-yard line well the first order of business if pittsburgh is going to get back into this ball game is to stop that guy number 40. gary anderson he has had his way on first down and that's one of the reasons why san diego has been so effective with their offense is that they have had good first down plays with gary anderson tim johnson made that last tackle this is jay randolph along with reggie rucker 17-7 the chargers they lead it we're in the fourth period with 11 minutes to play anderson and he is stopped for no gain making the play was cornell gowdy with help from nickerson number 54 is that a fine game has to be the first time in the series of this ball game that they had stopped anderson on first and second down now they can play defense like they want to play and that is putting mark malone in a third an obvious passing situation where historically that is he hasn't been so successful however he has been very good today completed nine straight to end the first half it's third and seven from the 28th flutie goes in motion to the far side whistle [Applause] let's see what this call is the pittsburgh steelers are indicating that the family is going to go against the chargers number 65. richards the rookie out of ucla the right tackle moved early there is the head man of the chargers al saunders 41 years old an academic all-american and defensive back and an outstanding performer at san jose state hope he doesn't start looking like don coryell did around here at the end third and 12 from the 23. we're inside the 10-minute mark we're in the fourth quarter [Music] malone all kinds of time throws incomplete at the 31-yard line loopy sanchez the extra defensive back in there making good play against jamie holland see all that proves is that the best third down defense in pro football is first down defense because now you make malone play outside of his abilities now he has to just do it on his own which is throw the football in there get it to a receiver paul thrown slightly behind holland holland could have caught that but they've dropped some passes on malone this year mojenko to punt rod woodson downfield he takes it at the 37. trying to find something on the near sideline he's at the 40 and down to the 37 and penalty markers go down majenko made the tackle [Music] looked like he might have got kicked boy there let's see if he's tripping is illegal i do know that let's see if someone sticks their leg out and tries to hook him with a leg mcshane oh yeah you can't do that oh that's that i don't like to see that happen don't do that there's a great run here of course moschenko says i got to get him down anyway i can go ahead and tackle him put your shoulders in there kicker 40-yard punt 27-yard return and now we're gonna have the penalty tacked on well the steelers are upset and uh you know a situation like this mojenko doing what he did there that just might get the steelers really wrapped up number two 10 yards first down no i want to say something about this because you know what i think i think this is when in the discretion of the officials if this guy was going to go for a touchdown he should be awarded a touchdown because that's an act that's outside the realm of professional football and there was no one near him to stop him watch this see now he's gone you'll hear the reaction from the crowd as the play was put on the big replay board here at san diego's jack murphy stadium and i'm not picking on noshenko or any other kicker i just think that you you love to see the great kick runs in football they're the most exciting plays in this sport the ball is placed down at the 25. twinch hillkin is out of the game at right tackle and the rookie john jackson out of eastern kentucky is in there at right tackle and we'll check to see if there's some problem with elkin we have nine and a half minutes remaining the chargers lead 17-7 both clubs have three timeouts remaining and this one is far from over it appears to be two different ball games san diego dominated this football game in the first half offensively and now it appears that pittsburgh looks stronger at the line of scrimmage they're getting the big plays and their fifth time people are making big-time plays lips and locket are here to the near side the short side carter's in the slot that's lips making the move brister comes back the other way to carter 15 10. great play at the five down to the three yard line it'll be first and goal to go figaro 50 plumber 50 or figaro 51 and plumber 50 on the tackle 22 yards on this play again chuck noll switched playbooks on us at halftime because this does not resemble any pittsburgh steeler team i've ever seen they have fake misdirection plays reverses fake screens screens across the backfield long passes this is quite an exciting offense mr knoll good blocking by dawson 63 and wilkley 73 on that last play brister rolling keeping and scoring the steelers are back in business with 8 44 to play in this game you know what you have here in bristol you have what i call a confrontational quarterback he isn't afraid to take you on bootleg once again everything going the wrong direction now watch number six take the shoulders down and take on some people oh get in there touchdown bubby briston and a little late shove there by vinci glenn point after it is up and it is good 17-14 chargers lead cut to three at the top of this show this afternoon we talked about the glory days of the steelers and the chargers it's been a very entertaining football game the steelers are having fun all of a sudden i want a helmet and some shoulder bags so i can go down there and catch some of these passes the steelers have just thrown away the playbook they brought in here to begin with and now they're playing wide open professional football the likes of which i've never seen pittsburgh play and a lot of it has to do with the way bubby brister has played in the second half of this football game a low line drive kick coming down holland at the 20 holland still on his feet gets it to the 30-yard line nice return by jamie holland holland out of ohio state tackle made again by tyrone stowes good a good job today if you want to know what the difference between these two teams and the teams uh who are winning today it's not in the skill position players the quarterbacks and the and the receivers and so forth you see those guys making big plays on both sides i think it's in the offensive line in the defensive line the trenches that's where you have to build a football team those guys let the skill guys do their thing lionel james will not play anymore today but the x-rays were negative on the shoulder anderson across the 35 david little again on the tackle for what a busy day it has been for little number 50. todd blackledge warming up brister was shaken up a little bit you remember and they've been attending to him black ledge had the opportunity to play earlier this year wrister was out with a dislocated finger on his passing arm and on his passing hand and of course blackness got a chance to play but this is bristol's team and he's got the momentum right now anderson anderson gets the first down over the 40-yard line little again on the tackle with help from nickerson the only time pittsburgh has been successful in a defensive series has been when they were able to stop gary anderson on first down they were able then to come back and stop him on second down but when he gets this kind of momentum going they get the good block here from red number 20 anderson gets up in there and picks up another first down when he's operating successfully on first down then san diego is able to do what it wants with his offense first and ten at the 41-yard line [Music] down the far sideline and it is almost intercepted it was intended for quinn early rod woodson almost came up with it and uh i'll tell you there's a little mugging going on at the end over there trying to outrun the wrong guy he's not going to outrun rod woodson just on a straight speed pattern now that's what you're supposed to do if you're quinn early though they teach receivers look uh if that ball's up in the air and that defensive back has a chance to catch it then you've got to turn into the defender and strip him of the pass it's a good job by quinn early because if he can't get it you're not supposed to let the defender get it either quite early number 87 good play on rod woodson one second down and ten holland goes to the left side that's written in motion the pitch back to anderson and anderson hurdles to the 44-yard line gary anderson with a career-high rushing mark today rod woodson number 26 made the tackle chargers are four and one when he's had a hundred yards or more he looks like one of the flying lenders here watch number 40 take off leave the ground airborne i mean he's throwing his body around out there like he's fearless the flying will endure i used to appear between the swiss bell ringers and the dancing bears well we got a circus in town i don't know maybe they're here moscow circus is appearing here in san diego chargers lead 17 to 14. anderson trying to get outside and he is stopped at the 47-yard line and the fans didn't like the play call i don't blame him luffy sanchez made the tackle number 28. what a role reversal the chargers just playing completely conservative in the second half good shot there by rod woodson who slows him up and then luffy sanchez makes the tackle and i know the charges have to be concerned now because brister and the steelers offense has been unstoppable mojenko coming to woodson woodson from the five woodson goes down at the seven yard line leading the way downfield after the 48-yard punt was pat miller a safety reserve number 48. chris is coming back rod woodson has to be very very tired he is doing everything imaginable and if you talk about mvps it has to be rod wilson this telecast presented by authority of the nfl intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the national football league is prohibited this game is the property of the nfl the san diego chargers and the pittsburgh steelers all rights reserved five minutes 27 seconds remaining brister throws to the far sideline incomplete trying to get it to lewis lips kind of force that one over there is gil bird who has two interceptions on the day had the coverage and there's a penalty marker and a penalty indicated against pittsburgh see if we can't pick up the culprit here durmani dawson isn't going to like it when they review these films he got caught for being downfield number 63 tripping decline tripping his decline well they'd rather take darrony dawson uh got caught on a big play earlier jay and now comes back and is holding here but tripping here but they don't uh accept the penalty you agree with declining it yes here yes yes second and ten of all at the eight yard line chargers leading at 17 to 14 as the steelers have battled back with 14 points here in the fourth quarter well the guys that have been hurting the charges had been hodge and caught her out of the backfield i would stay with them [Applause] mr gonna run out of there penalty markers go down brister gets it out over the 15 to the 17-yard line penalty marker fell on the far sideline lee williams made the stop for san diego don't want to hesitate too long in your own end zone before you decide to get out of here take a look at it now left of your screen brister is dancing around with his feet in the end zone and you don't want to mess around too much in there so he comes out let's see where the we're not going to see the flag flag is thrown on the far sideline near the 20 and fred silva the referee talking things over the umpire is dave hamilton silva and hamilton conferring 23 defense illegal use of the hands to the face five yards from the end of the run first down the call goes against roy bennett number 23. [Applause] he was once a dallas cowboy property first down pittsburgh out of the hole with the ball at the 21 and five minutes to play well keep in mind too that chuck knoll has one of the outstanding place kickers not only in this game today but in the history of this game and gary his own gary anderson and he doesn't have to go to length of this field just get gary anderson in shape to kick a tying game-tying field goal [Music] brister hunks throws and it is incomplete very very close to a possible call for interference as sam seal had the coverage against charles lockett sam seal who had played a number of years with the los angeles raiders now cornerback for this play big win for houston chicago just gets by detroit green bay there's something else when they play minnesota buffalo with a big win the giants getting by kansas city dallas knocks washington right out of it the playoff picture in new england now san francisco and the rams in excellent shape brister throwing it complete to carter and carter is brought down at the 30 short of a first down gary plummer there to make the stop number 50. 4 25 remaining in regulation time watch bristol hanging there to the very last minute allowing carter to get away and then he gets taken down and that's almost on every passing play for a quarterback in the national football league that was george hinkle 268 pounder out of arizona putting the wraps on him with reggie rucker jay randolph four minutes left in regulation time chargers lead by three third and one for the steelers and banging through and getting the first down i believe a fine effort hodge gary plummer had the tackle and hodge did an excellent job of stretching out looked like he got the first down he did i think the steelers have found themselves quite a jewel in the rough in merrell hodge this is something you can't teach watch the extension here he knows where the first down marker is he knows he doesn't have it there but then he stretches the football and he does get the first down hodge put on 18 pounds in the off season and his jaw enjoying certainly a very fine year in his second year played in 13 games as a rookie last season throws it out nobody there and the penalty flag goes up they've got it oh boy is upset with fred silva i would i would be as well but you better watch out unsportsman sportsmanlike conduct on brister he is some kind of hot boy is he upset that's the kind of competitor he is jay and i don't blame him here because i can't imagine why silva throws the flag he does not get rid of the foot he has a man there that's a screen pass they're setting it up he is i mean they do that all the time but on the other hand you must maintain some poise no matter how wrong the call may be he's the quarterback he's got to set the example illegal pass intentional grounding oh no loss of a down no you just never see this you never see this one sportsman like what right there's the back what is the problem second [Applause] the steelers are in a big hole back at the eight-yard line 307 remaining chargers to 14. he's seen it all hasn't he yeah they got to get the ball they look lost it down of course they got to get the ball out to the 42-yard line [Applause] for a first down brister throwing for the tight end preston gothard incomplete [Music] roy bennett with the coverage number 23. there it is again it's ball a little bit too long for gothard gotham covered very very well by roy bennett no chance to make that play bristol is probably still fuming and steaming smoke coming out of his helmet third down [Music] 34 for the first down lips and lockett set to the far side [Applause] out into the flat to hide hodge going out of bounds at the 17-yard line punting time coming up for the steelers with 254 remaining al sanders along with chuck noll you know chuck noll would really like to continue to win because you know he's on a two-game winning streak you like to get this one they got miami next week at their place they could finish the season winning four ball games would help a great deal for next year we've been told that james wouldn't return to the game but he is back out there as he takes this kick from newsom and james breaks through and gets it all the way down to the 43-yard line a 43-yard punt an 18-yard return and hinton made the stop number 96 we've got 243 remaining as tom moore the offensive coordinator of the pittsburgh steel is trying to calm bubby down he knows he needs him they're probably going to get the football back once more and have an opportunity to tie this game maybe send it in overtime and get a win both teams have three timeouts remaining he's a cajun louisiana and he is a tremendous prospect they fake the reverse and anderson keeps big hit and anderson is stopped after he got maybe a yard and the steelers are going to use the timeout right here show you some headlines on today's action as that last stop was made by hardy nickerson well the bears patriots are still involved that's a big thing to do [Music] and have home field advantage yes sir buffalo would have that houston big game in cleveland next week houston and cleveland oh i hope to tell you the raiders of course have still got life very interesting afc west here does anybody want this thing bobby brister signed a letter of intent to play at alabama for bear bryant chose to play baseball for the detroit tigers organization once played winner ball under manager jim leyland he's now at pittsburgh second and nine look at this guy there he is he's their bretton butterman gary anderson looks like he got the first down near the 33-yard line before hardy nickerson made the stop 163 yards this afternoon on 23 carries for anderson and for those of you who have not seen this guy we're not discovering a star he's been doing that out here all along he is a great talent i mean he has wishbone running statistics today griffin on that last play for the steelers along with nickerson but a very big first down and we come to the two-minute mark two minutes remaining in regulation time here at jack murphy stadium 17-14 chargers san diego leading by three with two minutes to play jay randolph and reggie rucker with you key turnover in the first half remember this red yes this was a pass by litz who should have thrown it early he didn't do it right there now watch him throw it back into the middle of the field with nothing on it the ball is intercepted they come away from there with nothing first and 10 at the 32-yard line for the chargers [Music] nickerson made the tackle timeout steelers that's their second timeout that they've used they have one remaining we'll be back with more in a moment in the second half late in this game steelers had the ball we're trying to drive for some points this play was called an illegal forward pass a rounding intentional grounding call this angle you don't see it as well as the wide angle which you see the screenplay developing and merrell hards out there in the screen pattern and i don't think that place would be called i think you let them play on right there jay i don't think you take it away from and call the grounding and then tacked on another penalty for sportsmen unsportsmanlike conduct all right watch this angle here you're going to see number 33 merrill hodge in the play right there to the right of your screen right now there it is number 33 right there in the screen foot second down and four at the 26 a minute and 53 remaining chargers by three anderson brought down no gain david little again if there's a group that the san diego chargers and al saunders ought to be very happy with in terms of their performance today it would be the charges offensive line we mentioned at the beginning of the telecast they have four free agents in that offensive line only david richards the right tackle number 65 is a draft choice steelers have just taken their last timeout minute and 47 remaining in regulation time so this is going to be held to skelter if they do get the football back again but i'll tell you what i would not be surprised if they don't see the football again because as i said the chargers offensive line have played very very well today chuck noll has led the steelers to four super bowl wins 74-75 78-79 saunders a 1969 honors grad at san jose state has a masters from stanford worked at usc missouri utah state california and tennessee came here in 83 work for don coryell took over for coryell third and six anderson did he get him oh he's short of it i don't know it's very close little and greg carr 91 they say short they're going to put the ball down at well it's between the 23 and the 24. so what do you do if you're al saunders now reminder that we will name the budweiser most valuable player for today's game at the end of this game and obviously there he is there's the leading candidate gary anderson there he is still a minute and 17 to play the clock is running and uh there's some concern now for the chargers what they want to do steelers have no timeouts remaining and now i'd kick the fields they they call time the chargers want to talk it over and decide what they're going to do it's fourth and about half a yard you know because now saunders has to consider that they have a guy on their side of the field who's one of the best that has ever played at kicking field goals now if they decide to kick the field goal it's conceivable that they make this and of course they go up by six points and i think that gives them an advantage in the ball game well they have steve deline out of colorado state who was in camp lost the battle with abbott now but of course the knee injury in the atlanta game he's three out of four i gotta go this is what you do i mean you play by the bill playing legal positions steve delaine it'll be mojenko to hold it's going to be a 42-yard attempt watch right over the center this is where the steelers will try to block it the kick is away and it is good it just did get over the bar the three points backed on for the chargers 20-14 the steelers could still win it with a touchdown they have 62 seconds with which to operate but no timeouts but remember this too a week ago here's the happiness of the field goal by steve deline a young man is trying to make a living in this business needs anything that he can get and the sadness chuck noll but chuck don't be too sad because you have a guy who last week took you 80 yards and eight plays and one minute 10 seconds against a very good football team once you do it in this league people think you can do it again and the winning touchdown was thrown by brister with just 20 seconds remaining in that football game so it's it's possible well it's time for our most valuable player award sponsored by budweiser and it goes to gary anderson who's at his finest day budweiser will make a contribution to the united way on behalf of all the mvps selected in today's games here's anderson at his level best he's just a remarkable athlete not very big but truly very very talented would you think they would try to receive this kick and get it out of bounds 102 left well uh i think when you have stone when you have white stone which isn't that's why you want to handle the football because this is the first offensive play of this drive both men who are back there have gone 92 yards for touchdowns this is a short kick at stone and stone is out to the 34-yard line stop made by leonard coleman number 31. pass me a seatbelt because with young players anything can happen steals report card most of this done in the second half mind you because the steelers did virtually nothing in the first half the steelers coming back with 14 points in this fourth quarter chargers lead at 20 to 14. anderson 26 carries 178 yards they're 4-1 when anderson rushes for 100 yards in the ball game carter going in motion brister growing now and completing it to lock it could not get out of bounds now they'll call what's called check with me everything will be called at the line of scrimmage you have to get to your positions as quickly as you can brister now will just get rid of the football and brister stopping the clock with 33 seconds even even though it's second down you have to waste it down here you just have to get rid of the football so you can stop that clock and regroup we'll run down all the scores houston very much in a situation where they've still got a chance to win that division chicago sneaks by green bay beats minnesota buffalo bill's back in business giants they're going good [Applause] dallas knocked the redskins out of business third and three from the 41. this is in trouble throws on the run incomplete 28 seconds remaining pass intended over there for barrel hodge and number 50 who you saw right there in the middle of your screen plumber doing a good job being chased by number 99 lee williams who leads the afc and sacks with 10 but had a tough go of it today facing ilkin the steal is best pass blocker four o'clock games san francisco rolling and the same for the la rams big down last time around for brister and the steelers fourth and three from the 41. i wouldn't be surprised if he puts himself in a situation where he can run it is complete for the first down to carter at midfield they've got to get on it fast he's got to throw it into the ground down to 15 seconds now the officials stop the clock because the chargers are not getting out of there got to throw something toward the end zone now elvis patterson number 34 trying to delay the process of proceeding with this game and there's 10 seconds on the clock two hail mary shots two prayers and hope one gets answered that would seem to be the strategy you hope that you maybe get one completed or maybe you get a call yeah you get a defensive foul game cannot end with a defensive foul so you could get another shot whatever wrister has to throw the football into the end zone it's going to be quite a he luigi thompson is in there with lips and johnson mr on the run throwing down the sideline and it is jump over the outstretched fingertips of troy johnson with two seconds left oh i'm shocked that san diego would even find themselves in a situation where they're covering man-to-man on a fast guy like troy johnson i mean he only missed this by step brister does a wonderful job escaping and letting go a great throw now watch this on the right corner low right pointing to the screen this doesn't miss by much there is some kind of competitor he hangs in there you may be watching the last play of this game the chargers are back in an umbrella defense brister throwing down field they go up fourth down it goes and this game is over the cannon fires off as the san diego chargers and their fans celebrate a 20 to 14 victory here at san diego's jack murphy stadium the steelers were shut out until they came up with 14 points in the fourth period chargers win it 20 to 14 here in san diego chargers now 5 and 10 pittsburgh 4 and 11.
