university of pittsburgh it's game number five for jack mcneil's football team and it's a crucial weekend indeed hi again everybody i'm eric reid joined by one of bc's all-time great ones gerard phelan this could be an all-time great football game today the eagles really need it gerard they come in one and three a very difficult trip to fort worth texas last weekend kind of a lost weekend the tcu lost the football game decisively and lost their starting quarterback mark camp house to injury double whammy a week ago camp house fading back late in the game the competitor that he is stood right in there to deliver the football took it right on the chin as he let the ball go and mark camp house broke his jaw he laid on the turf everybody didn't know what was going on when he got up you got a good view of what mark camp house looked like with a bloody mouth he walked off the field he will probably miss most of this season that'll bring mike power back into the starting group course power started every game last year including the 13-10 win at pittsburgh started the opener this year against southern cal big opportunity can't pass his losses mike powers gained one of the luxuries that jack mcnell has is that he has depth at the quarterback position mike powers started last year most of the football games for boston college he has a tremendous amount of experience good amount of poise throws the football well and obviously knows the offense at this point i think he'll take the reins for jack mcnell and do a fine job as protection key for the eagles power was sacked eight times in last year's game against pitt i guess when you talk about mike gottfried's two-in-one panthers you've got to mention their 42-10 win at ohio state a couple of weeks ago they were beaten rather soundly by west virginia last week this is a tremendous pit defense ranked seventh in the country and they've got an inside linebacker by the name of jerry olsofsky only weighs 218 pounds but this guy is a legit he packs a hell of a wallop and he's all over the football field he's got 207 tackles in the last two years 100 tackles over 100 tackles each year he's going for a record eric this year he would be the only pit defensive player to ever have more than 100 tackles three consecutive years he really wants that record he's a dominant player and a leader with two freshman linebackers outside of him look to him to make the big plays for the defense panthers go with that 4-3 defensive look very physical group in that front four and i guess when you talk physical you talk about the big sophomore right tackle mark spindler he's a real player a year ago he had more than 100 tackles one of only four players that started their freshman year at pitt in the last two decades he's really some kind of player by all means he's not a sophomore he's going to be the strength the backbone of the left side of the pitts defensive line eagles bring in a two-game losing streak in george one thing that has plagued them stopping the run game of their opposition happened at penn state happened to tcu eagles hope it won't happen this afternoon against pittsburgh but the panthers have a junior on the prowl and adam walker he's having a great year he is a fine football player a little injury last week with a groin pull but he's got good feet makes good decisions blocks well catches the football well they're going to look to him for offensive production today they also have a sophomore quarterback in darnell dickerson dickerson has a very strong arm but he affords mobility in the pit defen pit offense so between walker and dickerson pitt is going to have to generate some offense with only 200 yards against boston college just a year ago they're going to have to up that number will really have to be wary of that pittsburgh blitz gerard mike power generally when he gets back into the pocket he's a little jittery with his steps and he's going to have to set his feet he's been practicing on it all week and if west virginia pitt can come after him and ruffle his feathers early it might be a long day for mike power certainly power has the luxury of having tom waddle who have the 13 catches last week the explosive marcus cherry on the other side on first down this is jimmy bell and a penalty marker down as bill goes through 5 to the 25-yard line for his gag tackle eagles really have to get the running game going today they held were held by just by tcu to just 25 yards in the game last saturday there you look at the starting backfield power bell and st pierre in the backfield cherry and waddle the white outs and the sophomore tight end mark chamorro the illegal procedure the call against bc it'll mark it back to the 15-yard line a lawsuit five so it'll be first and fifteen for that group twitch off second straight started left tackle white hill at the right tackle wolf and hank in the guards brian chainley the veteran center so the eagles penalized on the first play from scrimmage eight seconds in it'll be a second down and 15 to go from the 15. waddle night of the football game right now marcus cherry of the loan wide out to the bottom of your screen and again jim bell gets the carry bell will manage to get five difficult yards around left hand where carnell smith number 91 may have stopped the big junior 245 pound defensive end getting jimmy bell on track a major task for the eagles today a thousand yard ground gainer last year averaging less than four a pop this year he's struggling so far this year eric and if he's if boston college's offense is going to go and mix the run with the pass jimmy bell is going to be a key he's going to have to get that up around five yards of carry it is now second down in 10 for power and the eagles at their own 20. and this is jim bell up the middle for three yards good tackle by number 92 burt grossman with six six 270 pound senior he's a key for them missed last week's game against west virginia with an injury he is an all-american candidate this year 80 tackles the last two years burke grossman on it that side with spindler boston college will be hard-pressed to run that side of the line bolsowski the middle linebacker though standout hampton and riddick washington and holloway the secondary and a big play here third down and six for the eagles their first drive of the football game at their own 24. cherry with a wide side motion looked like a broken play power keeps and is tossed down at the 25-yard line tossed down by the strong safety lewis riddick the 6-3 210-pound brother of the buffalo bill running back rob riddick it's a and play for the eagles on third down they pick up just two and they'll have to punt it on fourth and fourth now you see the replay here he was off in handoff phase and mike powers goes around the outside and his tre chased by riddick riddick a fullback last year obviously having very good speed pit will get good field position as boston college has to punch from their own 26 yard line low averaging 36 yards a boot this year under a heavy rush gets it away line drive and calling for the fair catch on the 28 yard punt robert bradley came in from the right side pitt put some pressure there on the punter brian lowe number 16 came in robert bradley almost blocked that punt that would have been a catastrophe for boston college pitt nonetheless will start with good field position a yard shy of the 50-yard line as you look at the offensive front for the panthers they will try to open up the lanes for darnell dickerson and the tailback adam walker just a junior having a sensational year and he gets the call on first down and picks up about four inside eagle territory to the 46 yard line eddie duran or free safety from north bergen new jersey and almost stopped durant having another very solid year but adam walker having a sensational year for pittsburgh averaging six yards of carry has already scored five touchdowns 366 yards coming in ivan caesar having a great year at defensive end sailor and kelly two leading leading tacklers for the eagles each with 57 williams and brian williams at the corners lobby in durham with safeties second down five pits first possession at the eagle 46-yard line again this is adam walker and ivan caesar meets walker a pickup of about three caesar and gilday put adam walker down after a short pickup ivan caesar converted from a tight end just a year ago is having a fantastic year making the transition very easily out there on the right linebacker position 52 tackles so far this year the defense against the run been problematic for these 88 eagles they are hoping to toughen up here on this third down and two from their own 43. panthers in eagle territory billy osbourne in motion near shot and here is the delay and a big gain for the first down that was kevin richards the backup tailback shows a good bit of spark and acceleration he picks up the first down down to the 35-yard line matt kelly came from his left linebacker spot trying to guess on the left side shoots through a hole he's unable to come up with the tackle you see him just on the right side of your picture then he breaks the line of scrimmage and lobby has to bring him down only after a first down gervin richards having a sensational start he's a freshman from texas henry tooten to the left reggie williams up to the top wide side right on first and ten from the eagle 35-yard line darnell dickerson for his first throw this afternoon with loads of time finds reggie williams at the 29-yard line williams came back to make the catch a pickup of six on first down four stop immediately by the strong safety rico lobby reggie williams was the leading receiver a year ago with 31 catches for the pit panthers it's just a drop back pass not much pressure back there on dickerson he looks to the left side of the field then comes back to the right side on the curl william the veteran receiver that he is comes back to the ball very well finds a dead spot and makes the completion justice third catch this year a second and four good spot for darnell dickerson at the eagle 29-yard line around the option dickerson keeps it and is flattened by ed duran actually slipped down at the 26 yard line a three-yard pickup and that'll bring up a third down and one steve garr the fullback came up with a fantastic block on this play on the outside taking out the end boston college does a fine job coming up and making the tackle ed duran doing a great job from his free safety position 50 tackles that i said earlier you don't want your free safety making that many tackles but when he makes them up on the line of scrimmage those are big plays panthers averaged 263 yards on the ground per ball game they need one here on third down at the eagle 26 yard line and this is kevin richards the freshman with the stutter step move he picks up the first down at the 22 22-yard line irvin richards looking good lappy brings him down an assist from sailor this is an impressive one-two punch for the panthers adam walker and kevin richards they're rushing the football here they've thrown the ball only one time on this drive they've moved the football about 26 yards so far mostly on the ground if the eagles can't stop the run today it'll be a long day 10 25 left in the first quarter this is pitt's first drive they have it first down and 10. at the bc 22 yard line richard's still the tailback in the eye and this is the fullback being wrapped up crossman for the first time gets hit at the line of scrimmage boston college coming up with the tackle for about a one or two yard gain peter gray wrapped up dan crossman peter gray back this week after a shoulder injury a week ago he sat out against tcu boston college i'm sure if they're just stopped the run peter gray it's nice to have him back eagles want to get pitt in new passing situations they're in one now second to nine dickerson they're on the option dickerson had an alley but stumbled at the 20-yard line he could have went a long way around right now they had the option set up very very well out there walker in great pitch range phase crossman came around the corner had the block on lobby we'll get a look at it here the reverse pivot starts out to the right side you see crossman coming up making a good block on mike sailor dickerson just loses his feet the turf monster came up and grabbed him and pulled him to the turf that was a heck of a block taking sailor out now hit two for two on third down here in this drive it's the third and eight at the vc 20 yard line crossman and richard side by side dickerson will throw under a rush fires it knocked away in the end zone by brian williams williams and duran chris cross right in front of the intended receiver henry tooten but a fine play by williams the sophomore it sure was boston college was threatening a blitz you figure that they would have to come after the young quarterback they were threatening a blitz and then they dropped back into his own coverage but you see it the ball is delivered down on the post pattern ed durant coming across play has just broken up that's a good third down hold for the boston college defense after pitch showed some consistency in that drive being able to run the football he'll have to try for a field goal and the freshman kicker scott kaplan will tee it up at the 27 so a 37-yard attempt and it is blocked and picked up by steve williams who runs it up to the 26-yard line special teams big play we're scoreless with 850 remaining in the first quarter we're going to get a look at it again kaplan takes a stutter step before the ball snapped then he gets back in the face kicks the ball right into the line just the pressure remember stephen williams picks up the block field goal and then runs out of bounds returning the ball a few yards upfield that was billy osbourne on the tackle the wide receiver for pitt looked like a low line draft kick didn't see who blocked it but the eagles have it first and ten at their own 26-yard line and survived pitt's first drive of the football game which was 10 players and 31 yards tom huebner is the long snapper for pitt he snaps on extra points and field goals he may have flinched just a bit forcing kaplan to take a step and then he stepped back and then the ball was sent back maybe it threw off his rhythm that's why the ball was kicked into the line by the way it is a gorgeous afternoon here at chestnut hill temperature hovering around the 80 degree mark on this sort of offensive canoe continuity established well to start with better field position this time last time they started on their 20 now they're out to the 26th they tried to run the football last time i think we'll see him coming out throwing the ball a little bit more on this possession and toner in it fullback jim bell lined up behind him chico now the tight end and this is ray hilford in motion but bell goes to the short side gets a decent block from toner gets it up to the 29 a pickup of three on first down boston college trying to run the sweep to the short side of the field they're on the left hash the strong safety lines up on the left side that's where why we saw so much of kevin richards adam walker seems to have turned his right ankle on that first possession well he's a little banged up here he had a hamstring last week and now it appears as if he's twisted his ankle they're going to retape it he'll be back but obviously not at 100 second down and seven for the eagles this is the big tight end mark chamura coming in motion power with a deep drop and a real wobbler intended for tom waddle who is wide open at the 40-yard line well we mentioned it was 80 degrees down on the field and with the turf and the sun beating down it's got to be close to 95 or so you see power there in disgust that could have been a catastrophe with the ball floating around there in the secondary it possibly just slipped out of his hands powers first throw of the afternoon he put up some very good numbers last year well he ranked 11th in the nation a year ago and passed efficiency so he can get the job done well very quickly gerard a third and seven for the eagles back at their own 29-yard line safety blitz power in a bit of trouble power dumps it off incomplete intended for wattle and mike was knocked down as he threw it richard allen came in chasing him around the corner mike powers showing some good feet but unable to get rid of the football and boston college will have to punt once again six plays and two punts so far for the bc offense scoreless football game 758 remaining in the first quarter alonzo hampton's set to return the brian lopon his first one going just 28 yards on fourth down and seven a line draft kick hampton gets it 39 yard line straight up he comes and gets it to the 49. a 31-yard punt an eight-yard return scoreless in this football game we'll be back for more first quarter action right after this scoreless football game first quarter second possession for pitt for the second time they start at their own 49 and the freshman kerbin richardson follows his left tackle in the bc territory at their 48 a three yard gain pitt going back to the ground game boston college player down on the field we can't get a good look to see who it is that's kevin pearson the defensive end who is in his second game back with an ankle injury he is not 100 percent well he may have re-aggravated that ankle it appears as if he's favoring it on the right side of it sailor and kelly the two inside linebackers having outstanding years but certainly the star of the defense to this point number 88 ivan caesar and a good thing for it because pearson's been nicked up all year so far he sure has and also keep in mind that eric lindstrom has come back from a knee reconstruction just a year ago so he added some depth in that position ivan caesar a big bright spot on that right side of the defensive line big david moore the six seven junior from byfield massachusetts now to tackle spawn right next to caesar eagles looking to beef up against the run 733 left in this first quarter pitt looking to put points on the board second time in as many possessions they are in eagle territory they have had the field position working to their advantage reggie williams in the slot as the sophomore darnell dickerson sends him in motion and calls his signals big hole for kerbin richardson brian williams and ed duran finally write him down but kerbin richardson sprints to the bc 34-yard line a pickup of 13. kevin richardson really has some quick feet he saw that hole and he did not waste any time we'll get a good look to see what ed duran sees here he starts out to the left side both guards out in front of him sealing off kelly he just runs up the field runs into ed duran and brian williams comes in to clean it up you'll see the pulling guard here here's stephanowski an all-american kicks out caesar leaves a big hole up the middle kevin richards out of laporte texas a 510 190 pounder just a first-year player at first and 10 and pittsburgh a little confused with her offensive set and darnell dickerson calls for shot they have two left mark stefanowski you saw just on that play a little earlier but plays that right guard position he is a big player on that right side of the line mike godfrey says he's one of the finest offensive lineman he's ever had at pitt comparison to bill fraley he is a good one stepnowski matter of fact one national pre-season publication had stephanoski and wisniewski from penn state as their two-top offensive lineman in the east right now stefanowski off to a fine start at right guard and kerbin richards the recipient of some of those blocks has 30 yards and four carries there's a reminder to boston college alumni and students planning to tailgate at bc home games a jack mcnail club started one and three turned into a success story 1986 he turned it around ended up with nine wins and a bowl game victory well ironically enough that was at one and three was when halloran was inserted seven in a row and now at one and three boston college goes with power after camp house goes down the offense gotten off to a jittery start here in the first quarter defense has to buckle up now first and 10 for pitt at the eagle 33-yard line darnell dickerson for the short trap has henry tooten wide open at the 27 and toot manages to get down to the 22-yard line picking up the first down rico lobby finally stopping the elusive junior henry tooten you can expect pitt to just go with these little three-step drop backs dickerson looks to the right side and he reads rico lobby if he goes for the post then he throws it outside there to tooten he goes out to tootin and he'll go to bill osborne on the post with a big game against west virginia has 13 catches on the year one of the talented athletes out of camden new jersey so another first down and 10 from the 22 for pittsburgh scoreless football game six and a half left on the first quarter little fullback crossman breaking a couple of tackles and able to rumble down to the 16-yard line where the free safety ed duran pulled him down another good game for the fullback nearly six yards they have so much talent in that backfield they can run the ball outside inside crossman's got so much strength strong safety a year ago is beefed up a bit to play that fullback position showing what he can do on that play mike gottfried pleased with his ground game third year head coach at pitt got for each teams five one and one following a loss in his brief tenure in pittsburgh they bounced back well second and five kerbin richards slanting inside the 15 down to the 13-yard line four-yard game it'll bring up a third and one this is where boston college got tough last possession of pitt they were able to stop him short of the first down and had to go for the field goal boston college defense has been out on the field a long time already in this football game they're going to have to stop this rushing attack for pitt it seems to be the ongoing scenario boston college unable to stop the rush there you see on third down and time of possession will be key today as fatigue begins to set in later on on this steamy afternoon third down and one reggie williams in motion this is richards he has the first down and bangs away and they'll watched it as he came back ivan caesar and rico labby got him on the rebound and the first down and bounced back may have lost it well they're gonna give them they're gonna it's gonna be interesting to see where they spot this ball you'll see kevin richards coming right at you behind a block of crossman showing some good feet there and then he just bounces to the outside it'll be interesting to see whether they give them forward momentum and where they mark the football he started into the line and then back back out if he still has his feet they will not give him that forward momentum impetus and they'll mark the ball where he was tackled first down pittsburgh panthers now five first downs in this football game eagles have yet to pick up their first first down what do you suppose is going through the mind of jack mcnell right now well they've tried so many things to try and stop this run game and they're not allowing pitt to come up with the big plays like tcu did a week ago but they're still not effective against the run pitts being consistent in running the football a scat guy with wide receiver bill osborne now going in motion this is kerbin richards and the freshman gets outside and into the end zone a 12-yard touchdown run for the freshman kevin richards and the panthers on the scoreboard first oh you saw walker was hurt on the sideline they don't lose anything with kevin richards in there getting the first down on the play before this showing some good balance and patience picking the hole running through the middle boston college unable to tackle three or four guys hit him on his route to the end zone pitt goes ahead six nothing a seven-play 51-yard drive and already kirbyn richards averaging seven and a half yards of pop six carries 46 yards kaplan will try to add on the point after with 4 35 left in the minutes so far the panthers have out first down boston college 6-0 and have run off 17 plays to the eagle six so with 435 left first quarter kaplan will boot it to either giles or frazier giles to your right fraser to the top of your screen eagles need a first down they've got to get that defense arrest and get some offensive flow going boston college has taken their last two meetings with pittsburgh but the panthers are often running seven nothing on the bounce giles will let her roll into the end zone for the touch back so the eagles get it first down and 10 from their own 20. well the sun is still shining on that side of the field they're having trouble fielding the football tracy giles unable to come up and feel that it was a low line drive but he was able to catch it he'd start up field a few fans want to see some boston college offense mike power the starter mark camp house with his jaw wired shot watching this game from the coaches box helping bc read the defense ed toner the loan setback and power quickly finds marcus cherry who makes a nice catch up at the 27-yard line dropped immediately by the right corner holloway good juggling catch by marcus cheryl who is having an outstanding season 16 receptions for 358 yards he's got a 22-yard average per reception two consecutive games with touchdowns marcus cherry overshadowed by tom waddle on the other side but he is a good one that was a seven-yard pickup eagles have it second down and three and ed toner the fullback is wrapped up a pickup of just a yard for toner jerry olszowski the middle linebacker number 55 got there quickly to wrap him up and got an assist from big number 91 carnell smith wilson reads the hole so well from his middle linebacker position he'll just mirror the backs mirror the flow of the play and pick a hole and get in there and try and stop them for a loss boston college here needs a first down third and one from their own 29 yard line eagles already today over two on third down ed toner dives into the pile looks like he had it but it'll be close well they started this drive on the 20 after the ball was down in the end zone they have to get it across the 30 for the first down it appears as if they have done so much to the liking of this crowded alumni stadium see the right side of the line there there's spindler crashing in able to grab the the legs of toner as he jumps over the top spindles so quick from the right side the smiling face of mark spindler you'd smile too if you played defensive tackle like spindler good bit of running for jim bell he dashes across the 40 for the 43 yard line a 12-yard pickup and that is vintage jim bell running jim bell got through the line of scrimmage good hole off that side you see only a 3.8 yard rushing average that time for more than 12 yards you're going to get a good look from also's point of view he comes through the hole there he's getting blocked very well inside jimmy bell showing some good strength getting a few extra yards and a first down for boston college 21 yards three carries for bell first down for power he's got his tight end mark chimera open he makes the catch at the 45-yard line a 12-yard pickup powers to mark chamura boston college runs that naked bootleg so very well camp house takes the ball he'll reverse pivot out to his left side and come down the line defensive lineman was full good block on the corner delivers the ball down to chamara he might have had some room to run if he was able to stand up and catch it the boston college will take any kind of first down they can at this point power was stepped down by his own lineman and goes down at the 47-yard line a loss of two that'll bring up a second and 12. pittsburgh leading seven nothing eagles moving for the first time this afternoon with two and a quarter left in this first period you see jack mcnell signaling in the formation there and all kinds of crazy gyrations and then they'll run the play in from the sideline so it's not to confuse the quarterback the eighth year for a cowboy jack been a rough ride through four games second down and 12. pitch back short side jim bell nice move bell gets out of bounds right at the 41-yard line that was forced out of room by a freshman linebacker named curtis bray curtis spray is a very big bright spot in the linebacking position like you said eric just a freshman but he was touted as the number one linebacker recruit a year ago in the country see also gets stuck inside trying to trying to pin him inside gets a good block right there unable to come up with a tackle and bray comes from his backside chico with a good block on him but gray showing some good strength and getting rid of him making the tackle great camera work as you saw safsky laterally moved sideline the sideline power on third and six is sacked and smothered right prentice wright the safety came blitzing in and then a familiar sight for mike power seeing a panther on top of him eight times last year he was sacked in that football game they came from both sides you'd expect it here at this point in the field there you see prentice wright coming up with the tackle grossman there as well nine yards makes it fourth and 15 and with a minute 28 left in the first quarter panthers will get it back by the brian lowe punt leading 7-0 another line drive short kick taken by hampton on the run and hampton dropped right out the 24-yard line brett chico running well on the special teams a 28-yard punt the three-yard return 7-0 panthers a minute 15 left here in the first quarter boston college that time with three first downs on the drive got some momentum off a big run from jimmy bell and then a pass completion to mark chamorro stumbling a little bit uh mike powers but at least pitt does not start on boston college's 50-yard line they're gonna have to go 75 yards for a score they'll have to earn this time this one this time freshman fullback in the game for pitt ronald redmond so a pair of freshmen in the backfield is dickerson looks deep on first down and has henry tooten at the 45. tooton in the eagle territory could go 30 25 10 henry tooton with a 76 yard they've got a third and eight here with 11 40 left in the second quarter it's a 14-7 pit lead so a big play for darnell dickerson fumble the snap and sailor puts him right down so the eagles are back in this football game they'll get the football back with 11 25 left in the first half and they're only a touchdown behind if boston college can amount to drive they're going to get fairly good field position they can amount to drive on this possession they'll be okay to get a look at the fumble here he's probably snapped he's probably snapped a little bit early he had nowhere to go with the football keep in mind caliguire you see mike seller coming in making the tackle dickerson doing everything he can to recover the fumble remember kyle guy went out before this play they substituted booster of boston college can take advantage of this field position pitt has had the luxury to start from this point on the field two times so far in this game let's see what boston college can do not been doing as well defensively as they had earlier lost the college trying to call a timeout here we want to talk about it here on third down and about three and they will get the time out the zone over the head of chamura incomplete the intended receiver or the primary receiver appeared to be tom waddle who ran the square out right corner and was well covered number 16 robert bradley did a real good job on the all-american tom waddle out on the right side you'll see tommy waddle out on the right side powers gets plenty of plenty of time to throw the football you see him looking a while run yes this is curve and richard's impressive 12 yard run for the freshman after a big sustained drive they give the ball to richards out around the 15 yard line he shows some determination and great balance right there coming through a host of bc tacklers scoring a touchdown we'll get to the rest of those highlights that put the panthers up seven nothing early on first quarter and we're set for our first play from scrimmage here in the third darnell dickerson went four for eight the first half gives it off to richards who has met line of scrimmage by matt kelly mike sailor the inside linebacker also there first half richards had nine carries 48 yards kelly gave him a helmet for that time biggest play first half darnell dickerson to henry tooten this one covers 76 yards faking the run again they look downfield and they find tootin coming over the middle shows great athletic ability and a fake right there on baker coming back inside and then just tremendous speed coming down the touchdowns against b.c defense pitt coming out here in the second half with fire jack mcnail's eagles continue to have problems solving opposition offense in terms of running games and today kevin richards the freshman out of texas going for the injured adam walker 133 yards 11 carries he just ran 83 yards right to the end zone to put pittsburgh up 21-10 for just a minute 33 into our third quarter here at chestnut hill that's how tcu beat bc last week just by big plays tootin with a big play that time kervin richards was another big play taking it 83 yards and a touchdown boston college big yards here and pick up the first down as he slides out of bounds at the 45-yard line 19-yard pickup for power on third and nine well just before the half he had a third in one had an opportunity to run the football and didn't this time he was not going to be full twice and he ran the football for a first down getting them out of their hole out to about the 45-yard line you see the replay here power's showing some speed and troy washington comes over from his free safety position to force him out of bounds panthers sent their strong safety lewis riddick on the blitz on that third and nine picking and choosing showing some patient was going to deliver it there then across the middle he sees frazier throws the ball down the field frazier just over the yard marker for a first down but they're trying to the corners to try and get in the backfield to prevent anything from happening before it hits the line of scrimmage that time rico lobby in on a blitz is able to come up with the tackle panthers leading by five points three and a half minutes left in our third quarter here on a very warm afternoon nice day in suburban boston chestnut hill massachusetts crossman the fullback staggers down to the 15-yard line mike saylor and matt kelly of the two inside linebackers waiting for him but a five-yard pickup for crossman this will be a big third down officials will call a time turned it in the results so it is a third down and 12 for pittsburgh they are now back at the eagle 23. keep in mind pittsburgh without their regular kicker jeff van horn with a freshman scott kaplan i was born to the right tooting up top dickerson to throw it looking for henry tootin in the end zone picked off and then dropped jeff baker sliced in to knock it away it appeared as if he was going to complete that pass and at the last second jeff baker comes up with a big play almost intercepts it he had a leg in but couldn't hold on to it jack mcnell gambling here they wouldn't get the first down and deliver the ball down the left side of the field and there you see a good picture of baker stepping in front of tooton unable to come up with the interception pit will have an opportunity to try and kick a field goal from 40 yards out kaplan will try it scott kaplan the freshman straight away a 40-yard kick against the breeze he makes it big boat for scott kaplan 217 remaining in our scott kaplan some help via the hole kaplan hits that with his wedge out of bounds at the seven he'll have to try it again kaplan perfectly accurate on the field goal then showing a little bit too much excitement enthusiasm and miss hits that kickoff he'll start back five yards this of course a big football game for pittsburgh with their two-in-one record they have the fighting irish of notre dame next week that game will be televised nationally now if you're mike godfrey i lost to west virginia then another a loss to an eastern foe like boston college and then you have to go and play notre dame don't think that he really needs this game panthers lost last week at home to west virginia 31-20 they had beaten the mountaineers in morgantown last year 6-3 but the panthers opened up this year with a 59-10 victory against northern iowa then routed john cooper's ohio state team 42-10 came into this game averaging 410 yards of offense per ball game you saw that breeze that kaplan is working against this squib kick taking on the run by tracy giles and giles able to maneuver his way up across the 40 to the 44. good bit of running for giles one thing that they did there that they haven't done before when pitt had to kick into the wind as they allowed their deep man to feel the kick the wind is blowing right in pitt's face that's why kaplan tried to kick it along the ground boston colleges could come up with good field position they allowed tracy giles to get the ball and he ran it well and they're going to start on their 43. thinking back to dickerson's pass in the end zone for tootin that was knocked away by baker that strong win probably had a lot to do with it holding that football up power on first down sends it downfield for waddle makes another shorthanded grab at college has to score on this driver in this quarter because they have the win with him they like to throw the football and obviously when you're throwing against the win it's much more difficult than from one and is pinned down by three of the 31 a two-yard pick up on second and seven apprentice right the very active outside linebacker it was like glued to number 21. that time fraser trying to bounce it out to the left side see jack mcnell trying to take off here you're going to have to flap him faster than that those are all the formations you'll get a look at frazier i'm going to try and bounce it to the outside somebody grabs hold of him here that's right and jerry is there muskowski to finish it up that could be your best line of the year well jack would like to flap him a little rather obvious pass interference call well that was a gutsy play cornell hollywood trying to get in there just as the ball gets to tom waddle while it's such good hands he knows he's got to get in walker the tackle apprentice wright showing that he's a disciplined player out on that left side turning the very dangerous timmy frazier in when he gets to the outside you know how dangerous he is struggling here against the run mike godfrey's got to be happy with the pit panthers as much as they toss the ball and handle it as many times and as hard as the backs have been hit today they have not yet fumbled the football gottfried's got to be happy when he looks at his offensive backfield right now a freshman in redmond a freshman in richards and a sophomore quarterback in dickerson and they're doing the job eric they have a five point lead in the first down and ten and this is the freshman fullback stepping over the pile ronald redman getting inside the 20 down to the 19. three yard gain on first down when you consider the fact that pitt has not fumbled the ball and also consider the fact that their backfield is so young that's just a time bomb waiting to go off they've done a great job so far in that category they've not lost a fumble yet this year have dropped it six times but haven't lost their one ratio is very impressive second and six darnell dickerson looking around and getting inside the 15 to the 14 where mike saylor took his legs out from under when you have a guy like dickerson running that triple option he comes down the line reverse pivot fake to the cross crossman then comes out he's got pitch phase he can do a couple things he decides to run with the ball he's going to come up with third down and one very big play for boston college dickerson has gained 35 yards and 11 carries but panthers with 256 yards of offense via the rush third down and one panthers at 40 percent on third down today kevin richards dancing around probably has it down to the 11-yard line gilday lindstrom ed duran and laby all right around richards but kerwin gets the first down richard basically does this by himself he comes to a line of boston college defenders goes along the line a lot of times they get stopped behind the line there they're going to call it a first down but he sidestepped right through a gap was able to get the first down richard's a artful runner he can run away from he can also pick his spot very well ten and a half minutes to play first and ten pitt at the eagle eleven richards runs right into ivan caesar doesn't get away may have lost the football thomas thamer the official saying no that he was down ivan caesar got to richards very quickly murphy was there to assist and it's just a pickup of one and jack mcnell is really upset well just as we talk about it there he lets the ball go on the ground obviously or apparently after he was down but boston college at this point's got to be looking for the football they can't allow pit to score second and nine from the bc10 richards has really been a workhorse and richards goes out of bounds right near the flag at the one yard line rico labbe pulled him down but kevin richards picks up a first down fruit pit they'll have it first and goal right at the doorstep now this is what boston college had to prevent him from doing scoring the touchdown richards with a nice big run here on second down got the ball on the wrong arm rico lavi touchdown saving tackle at the one yard line but it will be a first down and goal from the one adam walker's ankle probably feeling better as the yards pile up for kevin richards richards now with 189 yards did jack think it was a fumble that is a fumble first and goal inside the one dickerson snakes doesn't score it'll be second down well we could clearly see on the replay that he did fumble the football not a knee or an ankle or leg was down when that ball was dug out so pit obviously taking advantage here looking as if they're going to score a touchdown on a blown call by the officials well jack doesn't lose his cap for nothing that's about as close as you can possibly put it without it being a touchdown again darnell dickerson moves forward this time he's in touchdown 11 plays 61 yards a one-yard sneak by dickerson and a big possession for the panthers it sure was not only did they culminate it in a touchdown they were able to dodge a bullet when they fumbled the football they overcame a couple third down conversions and they also ate up a lot of this clock pit panthers offense obviously doing it
