big game day in cleveland as the raiders have come to town to meet the cleveland browns good afternoon everyone don crooke with bob trump be on an overcast day good for football temperature in the 50s the browns have never beaten the raiders here in cleveland and the raiders of course a team that stirs strong emotions everywhere they play they've been pointing to this game a long time in cleveland but to beat the raiders trump you've got to stop number 32 marcus allen he is a real treasure for the los angeles raiders in his last 46 games 48 touchdowns the average is about 120 yards rushing and receiving and this is the guy that the dogs have to beat up on today well the cleveland browns want to keep the raider pass rush away from their outstanding young quarterback bernie cosar to do that cleveland has to run the ball and they've got the people that can do it ball control with these two gentlemen ernest biner and kevin mack between them they average about 140 yards rushing per game this is the second best rushing attack in the nfl washington is first some 80 000 here at cleveland stadium tom flores a man who has two super bowl championship teams under his tenure as head coach of the los angeles raiders they don't like it here in cleveland but they've never been beaten here the feel for little damp marty schottenheimer has his team cooking right now the browns have won their last three games and they're solely atop the afc central kickoff downfield bar hits it into the end zone and steel lets it go out so the raiders will go on offense first and ten at their 20-yard line mark wilson the raider report on him his ankle's not a hundred percent his shoulder's not a hundred percent but he's 110 on guts and he'll start today big angular lanky quarterback out of brigham young there are the men he'll be throwing to and running the ball with the offensive line huge as always they've shifted a lot of people though there have been injuries in the raider offensive front marcus helen aligned as the lone setback hawkins going in motion the money back marcus allen on first and ten get some net a lot bob golick the nose tackle for the browns made the tackle cleveland a very tough defensive team golic in the middle reggie camp is their best pass rusher the linebackers on the outside in chip banks and clay matthews two former southern california trojans they have two pro bowl players great players minifield and dixon very strong at the corners and don rogers a second year player out of ucla is a real whammer at the safe position right now second down at eight wilson takes a look [Applause] the completion is it made it appears to be out to the 38-yard line an underthrown ball but coming back at it was the rookie from florida state jesse hester and so a 17-yard gain results and trump the raiders the team has had problems getting the ball way down field does so early don prior to the ball game and talking to al davis and now lokaselle of the raiders both reported that there are several guys in the black and silver with the flu they don't know what effect it's going to have on the football team but they were throwing up and having all kinds of problems last night that was jesse hester's 14th reception of the season now the raiders go back to the run straight ahead is frank hawkins and the browns don't give much up the middle frank hawkins a fifth year player out of nevada arena a power runner and primarily a blocker for los angeles watch 56 chip banks almost plays his linebacker spot like a defensive lineman marty schottenheimer has got to like this situation the best part of his team starts the football game that is his defense nicknamed the dogs here in cleveland they bark as opposed to slap hands when they do something good park in the defensive huddle they've been barking in the stands here at cleveland now second down and seven wilson's looking at christensen he's got him for another raider first down and he's not done until he gets to the 47-yard line might have gone a lot farther than 11 yards could not the footing betrayed him christensen with his 36th reception he's the leading pass catcher for the raiders again this is one of the things that i think will work against the cleveland brown defense a short very precise and high percentage passing offense by the cleveland browns hanford dixon on the tackle they'll mark the receiver and not the shoe there first down pickup 49 games in a row now christensen's caught at least one pass for the raiders he'll probably catch a lot more marcus allen makes it down to the 43-yard line a straight-up slashing runner with that great ability to cut like a quarter horse but there wasn't much there there hasn't been so far inside linebacker eddie johnson filled and made the stop for cleveland cleveland brown's offensive only defense is only allowed one score in the first period so far this season only allowed seven touchdowns all season they're tied with the eagles as the lowest the national football league each with seven allowed so far the raiders who've been hitting in the long yardage plays let's see what they do now and second down and eight with no score in the first quarter it's sold out cleveland stadium marcus allen going for the football and marcus allen had it and lost it at the 10 and there's a penalty marker down [Applause] now there is not that was just drop clean plate you see the ability there's i think a bean bag dropped by the official well it sits mark it'll be third down allen this ball is thrown on the wrong side of the receiver wilson's got time now watch the adjustment that allen makes back over his inside shoulder that's an easy catch bounce right off his face mask he won't do that very often one of the most sure-handed receivers in the nfl he is that comes in with 25 receptions so the raiders almost hit big but now they go to third nate [Music] jesse hester pays the price but he holds down see where they spat the ball hester had to get down to the 36-yard line of the browns he's going to be short of that don l gross on the hit good coverage very high percentage pass by mark wilson obviously trying to keep the cleveland browns defense off their quarterback one two three steps and throws that's a big tackle and it does appear that the raiders are going to go for it here on fourth down and about a yard leland defense as you know trump the number one defense in the american conference tested now as will the raider offensive line marcus allen eight yards off the line of scrimmage in the i set a fourth of a yard allen over the top and he's down to the 35-yard line and the raiders drive on los angeles coming up the ball with gusto there and the great athlete marcus allen takes it over the top for the first down well you see the rude hog of the offensive line there for the los angeles raiders he wins talking about an athlete bob beeman there on the fosberry flop for a first down that's the seventh time the los angeles raiders have gone on fourth down in inches third time they've made it don you know who that is al davis looking on as the raiders now on this opening drive have another first down hilton throws they jam up christensen he looks for a foul call but there's none there was contact eddie johnson on one side al gross on the other side johnson playing with a very bad knee christensen is the line at the bottom of the screen you'll see him at the top of the screen you'll see him pop up there look at the contact all over the place but no foul and wilson is now three for five throwing the ball for 36 yards so now the raiders go second down and 10 from the cleveland 35 allen this looks like the washington super bowl play but it didn't go quite as far that one was good for 79 and a touchdown marcus allen cutting back and there's no foul calls up and there aren't a broken play when the blocking changes a nine yard gain on the run though so it'll bring up third and short for los angeles one of the best things about marcus allen he never gives up on a play you see it's closed on the left side now watch number six mark wilson he's got a bad ankle a bad knee and a bad shoulder he'll come in your picture he's trying to make a block he's just gonna hook slides there to the 30-yard line allen picks up nine yards brings up third down and very short ten minutes to play in the first quarter the clock is running there's no score on the board raiders started at their 20 on this opening drive third one hawkins hitting hard as he gets ahead for another raider first down to the 22. big people on the right side of blastin christensen lawrence and marvin felix wright an extra defensive back made the stop for cleveland mark wilson at quarterback his career trump has been primarily is playing for an injured jim plunkett which is the case now he was the number one draft choice and he's hurt playing with a separated shoulder and a bad ankle you see dokie williams coming in bringing the plays into mark wilson the first time in the history of the raiders that a quarterback is having the place called from the sideline well play as a drive coming up for los angeles no score hawkins heading for the end zone and frank hawkins goes in for a touchdown the browns defense had gone 24 consecutive home games without allowing a back to rush for more than 100 yards here at cleveland stadium but the raiders have come out running the ball very well and frank hawkins on the payoff end of a very impressive drive the lead block the best block thrown by 32 marcus allen watch at the top of the screen you see allen right there just at the last moment gets the block 21 yards on the carry that is a very impressive opening drive by the los angeles raiders and that certainly quiets a crowd of 80 000 at cleveland stadium now chris barr hits the extra point his brother matt is the kicker for the cleveland browns so the raiders look good on the opening drive and they take a 7-0 lead with 9 10 to play first quarter well you like to start any game with a drive like the los angeles raiders just had marcus allen and frank hawkins there in tandem the run by hawkins the block by marcus allen 12 plays 80 yards five minutes and 50 seconds and we'll show you another replay of that run with a tremendous block by marcus allen who really gained a claim at ufc blocking for charles white the year he won the heisman trophy now chris barr ready to kick off for the raiders it's a high one downfield not too deep though and he'll have to do it over again from his 30 as it goes out of bounds let's watch the touchdown run again here it is from behind the defense you'll see the little hand off the hawkins now at the latter stages of this run all of a sudden you'll see tremendous contact right there allen on rogers 29 dixon has got man-to-man buff and run coverage on marcus allen he never saw hawkins coming 21 yards six points top of the screen watch once again allen is covered by dixon at the top dixon right in front of hawkins is not looking at the running back at all and suddenly allen goes in with a tremendous block by that time hawkins is around dixon easy into the end zone that's one of the problems with it bumping around when you've got to concentrate on a receiver out there you don't watch the running play coming at you well schottenheimer the coach of the browns likes to save his defense we give up a lot of yards but when it's on the line we can be outstanding but on that drive the raiders were one great looking football team hawkins was a lot of a two three carries 29 yards 21 on the touchdown run glenn young is the deep man for the cleveland browns in their receiving formation chris barr was waived by the cincinnati bengals went to the raiders in 80 played in that team in january of 81 that won the super bowl the boot down field and glenn young feels it at his eight 20 and the raiders come a hitting at the 25 line so bernie kosar and the cleveland offense come out for the first time ghost how the rookie for miami at quarterback kevin mack has been one of the top runners in the league this year and weiner gets a lot of yards best receiver is the tight end ozzie newsome the offensive line is not full of number ones in fact there aren't any but this offensive line has taken pretty good care of the qb's only 14 sacks just one in the last four games allowed great run blockers and that's what the cleveland browns want to do they really do they've got to keep the raider rush off coaster to do that they've got to maintain possession by jamming the ball at los angeles and they go to the run kevin 35 yards and mcilroy knocked him down but kevin mack going straight ahead gets 10 yards long for kell and alzado they're all outstanding long might be the best at his position in the league rod martin is the blitzer the sacred right linebacker you know about hayes and haynes called the best pair of corners in the league although the two on cleveland minifield and for dixon aren't far behind hayes and haynes i think have gotten the press because they've been to super bowls minifield and dixon are two excellent bump and run cornerbacks very strong very intense both these teams also have excellent support safeties all four are great tacklers tim spencer trump just ran for touchdown for the chargers and they now leave minnesota seven nothing houston on a larry moriarty run has gone in front of cincinnati seven nothing detroit up seven nothing on san francisco [Applause] [Music] 49ers less than great at the moment and buffalo on greg bell's touchdown run is out in front of the indianapolis colts 7-0 browns are the best team in the american conference at running the ball and the raiders are the best in the conference at stopping the run and that's what's coming right now in all probability on second and inches are going to fire slapped right back at him mikhail was there rod martin was coming up the middle on the blitz bill paquel is really emerging as a top nose tackle ozzie newsome was the intended receiver don wide open absolutely wide open defensive coaches teach their defensive players to once they get the into the offensive backfield get your hands up there's piquel hands up he stops a sure completion to ozzie newsome so if the kale comes out as the raiders change alignments now and he's right ready to go again and so is howard long they shift around they'll bring pequel in the middle now as they go to the down line third down in yards mikkel ready to move off mike bab the center for the grounds here's the handoff and straight ahead with the ball as a power back from alabama johnny davis who got some looks like he's got the first down now let's go to nfl 85 and bob costas don san diego has an early 7-0 lead at minnesota and look who helps out with the block there he is number 80 kellen winslow his first action of the year it helps tim spencer get in from the two and san diego leads it in the first quarter 7-0 back to crickey and trumpy thank you bob we've got 7 44 to play here at cleveland stadium 80 000 on hand now watch the raiders the team that they still remember so vividly knocking the browns out of the playoffs and that january day in 1981 browns have never beaten the raiders here at cleveland hosa deep drop lame ball it's up for grabs it falls incomplete as the raiders come hard howie long was busting up 10 of receivers ryan brennan but nobody holds out howie long and sometimes he's triple team long and rod martin you can see long jumps inside picked up by dan pike when he hits his arm therefore kozar can't really follow through look at the contact here on the receiver all over the field receiver almost makes a reception here boy that's that's one for cleveland throw it up like that and it's not intercepted let's see what they do now on second down and 10. [Music] kevin mack to the 42 he got four rodmart knocked him down for los angeles with 7 14 to play in the first quarter and still seven nothing count the raiders in the lead one of the things the cleveland browns must do today is stay out of that second and third long situation because then you put a rookie quarterback as gifted as bernie kozar may be and eventually turn out to be defenses can give him false reads can make him throw into coverage and of course with kevin with howie long he's not going to have a lot of time to throw it now third down and eight bernie cosad from the shotgun he thinks big games are fun we'll see how much fun he finds the raiders third and six let's go long clarence weathers is out there and he has the vote for the brown for the 27-yard line of los angeles so kosar who thrives on the blitz as of the collegiate and through his early pro games hits on a 34-yard throw against the full blitz right to clarence weathers who's been a destroyer off the flank maybe the smallest player on the field last week he had three catches for 146 yards all of that yardage came in the second half kozar throws off his back foot marty schottenheimer told us last week prior to the houston oiler game he'd never seen a better long passer than bernie kosar and also trump the browns coaches were saying they've never seen a quarterback in years have a week of practice like cosar's had he's really looked sharp and he'll have to against the la defense kevin mack goes to the run and the best running team in the american first down moves the ball to about the 23-yard line of los angeles rod martin was on the stop this is that breathless time of the football game for both teams the raiders take the ball down the field and score now the browns need an answering drive started at their own 26-yard line big catch by weathers they can compete with los angeles if they can run the football [Music] raiders are leading the game they drove 80 yards with their opening possession to take a 7-0 lead john jefferson is now in the game he's on the right flank the former san diego charger and green bay packer that's jefferson in motion [Applause] sprinting out call play throwing on the run penalty marker down incomplete pass but the marker is down in the raiders secondary they're looking at jefferson who's yet to catch a pass since coming to cleveland that's going to be on mike davis i believe strong safety for the raiders covering ozzie newsom their legs kind of got a little tangled up raiders don't mind that they really don't mind that with all the bump and run that they use there's going to be contact and they'd rather make the contact and take the chance that the official's not going to drop the flag you see newsome come out right in the middle you see davis pushes him down flag thrown i mean all it is is five yards and a first down for the cleveland browns but they do move the chain markers get four new downs and they have the ball just inside the 19-yard line of los angeles raiders lead the game seven to nothing first quarter five minutes to play in it finer working hard is down to the 16-yard line ernest finer a good back low draft choice a 10th rounder but he's averaging over four yards of carry has gained over 400 yards as you see and been in the end zone five times four on the run once on a pass reception if biner has a problem it's just hanging onto the football that's the only problem that kid has he's out of east carolina who also produced tony collins the gifted running back for the new england patriots and these two running backs for the cleveland browns probably the least known running backs in the nfl second down and seven now for the browns cosa they pick up the blitz nicely he releases it's caught by ozzy newson down at the five yard line what a throw a man who's caught more passes than any receiver in football over the last six years ozzie newsom from alabama comes down with an 11-yard reception it's first in goal for cleveland 89 consecutive games for aussie what a throw by kozar this is double coverage greg townsend is right in kozar's face along with long watch this over brennan in between linebacker van pelt wow what a throw that's the stuff that legends are made out of and of course every quarterback must pay a price there's rod martin dragging bernie down he doesn't see the completion hurts less when you land on rod martin raiders may have jumped as finer takes it ahead down to the goal line brown's getting a good surge in their offensive front as they take it again straight ahead on the run but there was a penalty marker down a raider did leave early but we'll see if he was drawn offside interesting neither offense treating the other team's defense with much respect and both teams came in here with great defenses you're right defense offsides got about five yards on the run declined the penalty second down see if you take the penalty it's first and goal they have marty schottenheimer has confidence they want the yards for the running back he got more on the carry was just by inches but that was about five yards too and they use it down all right i'd still like to take the first down [Applause] so the browns looking at uh tie the game getting ready to challenge [Applause] touchdown cleveland travis tucker a rookie tight end and a slam block ricky bolden was stuff and so was ozzie newsom as they blew the raiders off the line don last year cleveland brown's rushing offense was ranked 28th in the league today number two and they now scored a rushing touchdown in 10 consecutive games and they're the only team this season to score a rushing touchdown in every game they've played now matt fires down the field to try to tie which is brother hit the extra point earlier and now it's manfire putting up the seven points for cleveland so with three minutes and nine seconds to play in the first quarter the browns and the raiders are tied at seven there's ernest spiner who just went in the end zone for the cleveland browns the point after ties the game at seven this is don quickie with bob trump he had sold out cleveland stadium 80 000 here as the browns pointing to this game for some weeks ready to kick it off again to los angeles first possession for the raiders was an 80 yard drive in 12 plays with hawkins going in for the opening touchdown of the game 21 yards out here's sam seal for los angeles emily marker is thrown in as sam seal goes down at the 20-yard line he'll run it to the offensive right good block on howie long there are three tight ends in there and viner with great leg strength hangs under the football gets in the end zone and that's an 11 play 73 yard drive capped by a one yard run by biner six minutes and one second of possession penalty against the los angeles raiders take it back to half the distance to the goal that hurts starting a long way out both teams with a kind of in-your-face offense defenses come in with high ratings but the two offenses have stuffed the ball right at him both these teams are now brute force types of football teams mark wilson and the raiders set to begin their second drive as the cardinals lead the steelers three-nothing allen taking a lot of helmets a lot of hits maybe the number one attribute of the great runners is courage i like allen who ran it 28 times last week probably got hit 80 or 100 times in that game by different people alan five carries for 20 yards there's at least four people pounding on every play because they know where the ball is going most of the time tackles that time made by eddie johnson and tom cousino raiders gaining a lot of yards so far up the middle of that dog's defense mark wilson gets some time and he gets it out but he's too wide for marcus allen al gross defending but he didn't really have to as it was not near marcus allen they're taking pretty good care of wilson though you talk about a guy with no respect though he's the rodney dangerfield of the nfl 16-9 as a starter 3-0 in 1985. watch dookie williams telling the play from tom flores but for some strange reason he's never really been able to take over the starting job from that guy right there jim plunkett old career has been filling in for an injured jim plunkett of course jim is out for the season with a shoulder separation wilson though who has no unknown coming out of byu a number one draft choice who set 11 ncaa passing records not even close that time they put the big heat on bob golic is really coming up the middle the nose tackle for the cleveland rounds the big 270 pounder from notre dame down to six deer pressuring mark wilson and so fourth down arises and the raiders have to punt the ball and cleveland could get very good field position although the raider punter ray guy is having a tremendous year there he is ray guy last week in front of the ball eight times against our ten times against new orleans only one was returned and that was for no yards yeah as a great placement punter although hero just trying to hit it as deep as he can [Music] head over and cut not too deep clarence withers comes up on the ball for cleveland he's got a chance the chance runs out as he goes out of bounds at the 44-yard line of los angeles then a penalty marker came in it was a 34-yard punt and a four-yard return that's a clip and ben dripe the referee brad van pelt was clipped right in front of the cleveland browns bench now called illegal block in the back illegal block in the back receiving team number 37. boy did that hurt yeah it really was senseless too watch right there i mean he's not going to gain another inch even with the block poor choice by rockins we'll be back in a moment first down again the long ball good coverage by the raiders and lester hayes almost picks it up as they're going deep to clarence weathers there is a marker down also in the cleveland backfield weathers in the opinion of the raider coaches has added a new dimension to the cleveland offense because of his great deep speed he really stretches the defense out now they've got the great short receiver in newsom late hit by the raiders defensive line on kosar automatic first down 15 yards and lister had excellent coverage there one of the best bump and run guys you'll find in professional football interesting trump though the raider cornerbacks despite their great reputations have been challenged more this year than ever before and they've been getting beat long more than before although it's taken some perfectly thrown balls to do it so the browns and his tie game 7-7 late in the first quarter get a first down inside the los angeles 40. [Music] kevin angeles fans might remember kevin mack playing for the los angeles express he came out at clemson was projected as a high number two he maybe even a late number one draft choice in the nfl but he went to the usfl early as dallas has taken a seven nothing lead now pittsburgh has come back to take the lead over st louis 7-3 the steelers badly in need of a win atlanta needs one worse they've not won this year and they're leading new orleans 7-0 one of the leading contenders of the bow jackson bowl second down and 11 now for the cleveland browns kevin mack runs the ball he's very fast he's six feet 212 pounds mack in high school he ran a 9-500 in south carolina he can break it long now carried the ball five times has gained 18 yards as the first quarter is down to 58 seconds and running and the game is tied 7-7 another big third down and about eight situation for the cleveland browns john jefferson comes in the ball game to this point all he's done for the browns is run motion they're trying to get him into the offense this would be a perfect time i think that last time they at least threw them was the first time in four games they've thrown to him because you have to catch one third down throw by coaster and cleveland a long ball he's got a man out there and again the raiders are in good position mcelroy the strong safety ready to unload on weather as he saw that coming so it brings up fourth down now and cleveland will punt the ball one of the few times you see the los angeles raiders when they're not in bump and run even though at the top of the screen you see the guy at the line of scrimmage watching he'll let the receiver go on the outside well conceived pattern weather's on the inside breaks for the outside couldn't quite make the completion interesting contrast here trump gossett has the lowest punting averages you see in the nfl the man about to return it fulton walker the former dolphin has the best return average on punts in the american conference over 14 yards walker standing back at his 10-yard line gossip hits a high punt well placed rockin's gonna catch it oh no got into the end zone for a touchdown almost a perfect play by chris rockins that's something the teams are now practicing so the raiders get it back at their 20 when we come back raiders ready to go first and ten from their 20. game tied seven seven 20 seconds to play first quarter marcus allen takes us straight ahead and he's out for a five yard gain kuzano the inside linebacker number 50 made the stop almost a great play here by chris rockins he'll practice this all week long but unfortunately rockets looking up at the football does not know where the goal line is trying to keep himself in fair territory there but once his body hits the line it's a touch back and that ends the first quarter with the game tied seven all [Applause] grounds crew at that sodded in where the cleveland indians play baseball all day long we'll be out there trying to fix that it's only been down two weeks as bad as that that is it's a lot better than the sand and dirt that they have there i'm not sure no it is really pretty loose first second down and five now for the raiders as mark wilson looks to christensen he's going to go for a first down a lot more christensen and the opinion of john makovic the coach of kansas city does the best job with any tight end in the league getting open legally well he gets off the line first which is a great talent that a tight end must have nowadays 13 yards on the catch one of the things when you face a defense that has bump and run on the outside and cleveland does your inside receivers are going to be open the running backs and the tight ends christensen moving out he's a great hand fighter getting out the line of scrimmage first down wilson looking deep airs it out christensen and the big raider is down to the 38-yard line of cleveland 22-yard gain as the raiders strike on consecutive plays pat christensen one year after a holdout very confident guy was in his first scrimmage he caught the ball at the feet of l davis and along the sideline with one hand got up without breaking a stride ran back to the huddle and yelled back at davis that's why i get the money three catches now 47 yards and when he when he was with the dallas cowboys he didn't want to play tight in he wanted to play running back he goes to the raiders and now davis didn't ask him he told him you're a tight end went to the giants he didn't want to play running back all-pro player as a waiver acquisition marcus allen the main man in the raider backfield can't get anything started there is eddie johnson filled eddie johnson the inside linebacker is the only guy of the four cleveland linebackers who was not a high number one draft choice banks cousino and matthews all were but johnson plays like one rams going for a seventh consecutive win out in front of the chiefs of kansas city eddie johnson coming off the field he's got that bad knee got last week in the astrodome on astro turf got a big brace on his left leg scott nicholas now replaces him in the defensive lineup mark wilson looks over the cleveland defense [Music] second and ten wilson in trouble they're going to get him 47. [Applause] one of the great outside linebackers in football the captain and most valuable player of the browns defense 30th sack the raiders have allowed your watch 57 they try to have hawkins a running back on matthews that's a mismatch no running back in my estimation in the nfl can handle matthews or banks on the blitz first sack of the day for cleveland a year ago and matthews was a consensus off-road coach schatzheimer said he'd never seen a defensive player have a better year at any position never gives up either 6-2-2-35 he had 12 sacks as a linebacker last year for the raiders with a big problem now third down to 23 coming out penalty markers down might be a hold in the backfield that's what carl houston of the browns is signaling mark wilson is down here's the guy's playing on sheer courage he has a bad ankle and a very bad shoulder partially separated he came back last week after the separated shoulder we've got flags officials are going to talk is it going to be a late hit it was also a late flag over on the far side of the field a flag in the raider backfield offense holding 65 defense holding 31. wipe them out out of the push you uh they'd mention the fact how injured mark wilson is i noticed that ray guy took several snaps in the warm-up through the ball a couple of times you see the one flag we don't see the other but wilson got up you see him put his helmet on put his helmet on he could barely lift his left left arm that's a separated shoulder he had a tough day at the coliseum last week not only did he suffer a separated shoulder to go along with a sprained ankle but he was booed all afternoon might feel more at home on the road this week wilson's thrown nine times has completed five for 72 yards third down and 23. hawkins gets it across midfield but not a whole lot rogers who is a real striker at free safety the afc defensive rookie of the year made the hit number 20. watch him come up goes bar the center those safeties are waiting there this is great contact great contact by those defensive backs felix wright don rogers certainly not enough for the first down great guys out for a second time with 11 55 to play in the first half in the game tied 7-7 don quickie with bob trump he has sold out cleveland stadium temperature in the 50s over cassidy and the lights are on clarence weather's back deep down for the browns great hit penalty markers down they might have hit ray guy they very nearly got a block it went into the end zone for a touchback but the raiders might get four new downs official threw a flag right at the feet of ray guy after release the ball hold now signal they called holding against the cleveland browns oh holding against the los angeles raiders so a 48-yard punt that just carried into the end zone for a touch back we'll see what the browns elect to do here and send weathers back out to receive another one they're going to make them re-kick that's one of the things you like about ray guy he has such great athletic skills it's hard to get a snap by him remember the super bowl they felt that turned the game then i was absolutely holding number 31 decline the penalty touchback he's such a gifted athlete he's listed as their third quarterback now he went up to catch that one punt snap one-handed in the super bowl turn the game around game is tied 7-7 second quarter 11 33 to play in it browns go to the run kevin mack looking for a place to move and he's struck down by van mcelroy strong safety for the raiders kevin mack good runner good yardage averages over five yards of carry the giants have just gone in front on a sims to mark bavaro pass to 25 29 yards houston's extended lead over cincinnati to 10 to nothing detroit and the 49ers tied 14-14 in the second quarter new orleans and atlanta now tied up dave wilson just threw to wayne wilson for a saints touchdown [Music] second and seven for the browns [Music] all pro play by howie long as he stuffs kevin mack more and more trump you hear everybody in the league talking about howie long as the preeminent man at his position defensive end you can't hold him out most of the press he gets is for his pass rush you can see here he can also play the run harry hulk 81 was supposed to block howie long he just follows the guard into the hole and he's right there crowns have run that delay sweep a great deal we're gonna come up with another play notice two weathers comes off the field limping and lifting badly don that's their deep threat downs now go third and almost 13. they've converted two of three third downs earlier in the day [Applause] right now bernie costa wants to get some council from the sidelines with 10 minutes to play in the first half and the score the cleveland brown seven and the los angeles raiders seven will be back i'm pregnant with bob trumpy back at cleveland this game was rated just about even coming in and that's where we stand right now it's a 7-7 game big play ready to bust pretty soon though maybe yeah don i've been impressed with both teams defenses after the opening drive for either offense the defenses have kind of taken control of this game one thing of note france weather's on the sideline there they're looking at his knee and he's the cleveland browns deep threat he's made the one big play for cleveland a 32-yard reception gonna hurt if he doesn't come back here's coaster now third and thirteen going to the run and binders shut down by the raiders so the browns have to punt the bomb and los angeles could get good field position jeff gassett comes out raiders the best in the afc it's stopping to run the browns the best in the conference at running the ball so far so far the raiders have won that battle browns are only gaining about 30 yards rushing [Applause] bolton walkers back at his 40-yard line for los angeles and here's the punch by gossett short one walker comes up now it's got some room to run and he takes it inside the browns 45-yard line just a 30-yard punt by gossett and a seven-yard return so gassett hasn't been doing the job for cleveland at least not in that one certainly one of the most interesting spectators is the owner of the browns art model his team solely attacked its division for the first time in five years this late in the season marcus allen gets the reception and he's down inside the 30. they'll spot him out of bounds at the 29-yard line a well-executed pass play as allen slipped the sideline and made it a 15-yard gain this telecast is presented by authority of the national football league it is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the cleveland browns and the national football league is prohibited great choice by wilson with that bump and run defense of the cleveland browns running backs and tight ends going to be open underneath all day raiders starting to mount a challenge now to that short punt it's a 7-7 game marcus allen with hawkins as a lead blocker he allowed him to turn the corner and allen is down to the 23-yard line al gross the strong safety finally got him last week marcus allen ran the ball 28 times for los angeles all the other backs in the quarterbacks combined ran it for five the thing you gotta like about marcus allen is that he catches a pass on one side of the field on one play runs the sweep on the other side of the field the next play he is their offense they're still trying to find that deep receiver like cliff branch was to get the ball down the field until then he'll give it to 32 anyway he'll take it kenny king now comes in for los angeles as you see second and four falcons taking people on cousin oh struck him at midfield right in the middle of the line actually down the 22-yard line so the raiders come close to a first down but not quite there it'll be third down in about two hawkins a blocky very powerful runner at five nine two ten minnesota's now tied the game buffalo continues to lead indianapolis houston up 10-3 on cincinnati third down and uh not two to go for the first down wilson six of ten throwing the ball for the raiders for 87 yards almost but it brings up fourth down as christensen was hit with a well-timed blow by eddie johnson great coverage by the cleveland defensive backs more that bump and run the wide receivers had no chance to be open christian still almost makes his catch much eddie johnson 51 well that's banks right there with marcus allen kind of run together and eddie johnson does the cartwheel on christensen can't make the catch fourth down and bar tries a field goal chris barr ready for a 29-yard attempt 39-yard attempt with a 10 into the end zone hold at the 29. [Music] he didn't get there hit the upright only six for eleven kicking field goals this season for the raiders so the drive is stopped and there's no points realize that upright is six inches wide that's why they hit it how in the world can they hit that thing almost squarely it bounces almost straight back onto the field of play [Music] it's the upright on the left bounces right straight back into the field of play that seems so improbable but it happens a lot it does and the browns gets the ball at the line of scrimmage outside the 20 they'll go first in 10 of their 22 8 16 to play in the first half and the game is tied 7-7 both teams went on long drives in their opening possessions to score hostar has the ball tipped and very nearly matt millen in position to intercept there might be a hold on cleveland it's the only way to keep howie long out and they didn't even do that now they got to start keeping a back in there just to help the offensive line cleveland offensive align has allowed one sack in the last four games this really takes an offense out of its game though it's a killer holding 10 yards it's holding it's against cleveland ricky bouldin number 77 he was blocking on number 75 bottom of the screen howie long right in front of him look at the strength of both of those guys and when bolden has his arm around the front of howie long you see how he long tipped the ball he gets the holding call against on him and tips the ball too not a bad play by howie long we're told the browns are going to spread out a lot away from howie long side they've only done it a couple of times now at first down and 20 they go to the run and get nothing at all as kevin mack is stuffed at the line and we pause briefly for station identification this is the nbc television network this is wkyc tv3 in cleveland we're at cleveland stadium 80 000 are here the browns already have had an 80 000 house for the pittsburgh game that could have one next week when washington comes in they've really sold this one out a long time ago as the raiders a team they've never beaten at cleveland come back with those memories almost five years old but still vivid in the minds of all the brown fans the loss in the playoff game on that bitter cold day when mike davis intercepted brian seif in january of 81. now co-stars at the controls of cleveland he fires a penalty markers down as the completion is out to the 20-yard line ozzie newson the tight end caught the ball he led all afc receivers a year ago did ozzie newsome with 89 catches another hold against the cleveland browns offense i think you decline it let it stand his third down it'll be ten third down and ten tough choice here interesting the attitude and observation of al davis before the game trump he said we've been winning yes but we've been struggling 69 10 yards still second down what'd he say they've been winning yes but they've been struggling they still haven't found a personality but now right these penalty calls against the browns are going to put the raiders in scoring position before long because unless cleveland hits a big one to get a first down they're going to have to punt the ball in good field position to los angeles with 7 10 to play in the first half and the game still ties 10 7-7 ryan brennan and glenn younger wide receivers all out rush coming for the raiders now goes to the run and kevin mack gets out just across the 10 yard line to the 11. it'll bring up third down sean jones a big pass rusher in makes the stop on the running play options are limited here for kosar he's not going to have much time if he goes into his end zone to throw the raiders with 29 sacks already this season they're topping the american conference and they were top a year ago and they had 64. i'd look for a tight end screen here you're going to get a lot of deep drops by los angeles raiders defensive backs and linebackers a good pass rush by the front four you might find newsome available on the screen still only put five balls up today completed two for 43 yards the 131 yarder to clarence weathers finer tries to run and he has stopped cold john jones got him so now we have a moment let's go back to nfl 85 bob don this one is worth looking at watch the catch and run by mike rozier off the flip from warren moon the play will wind up covering 52 yards and certainly wind up in everybody's highlight film at the end of the year as he zigs and zags later he scores from the three and houston leads 17-3 [Music] so cleveland beat houston a week ago they've been struggling now the big win perhaps on the way here's a punt downfield crosses the 45-yard line of cleveland colton walker comes up on it a 37-yard punt is the ruling not being very warmly received here in cleveland he's not been hitting the ball well coming up next on nbc sports it's the second half of our double header most of you will see freeman mcneil in the front running jets of the afc east take on the patriots in new england plus other regional action check your local listings for the game in your area also today the seahawks and the broncos hook up at denver devil header day on nbc sports crater certainly won this field position battle in the second quarter once again inside the 50-yard line wilson he's hurting but he's working and he goes deep dokey williams almost had it the spinner from ucla now he might have a foul call on the offense yeah that's who it's going to go against they try this minifield a little corner number 31 he's only about five eight but he's got a 44 inch vertical leap that's what that basketball star of some time ago david thompson used to have so you can throw on him and throw high on him but he can go up and get it dokie williams i think this ball was intentionally under thrown watch dokey williams put his hands out push off manfield pass interference number 85 10 yards that's a good call by the officials a lot more liberal rules now for defensive backs it looked like trump at the outset of the day we're going to see a lot of touchdowns the raiders went 80 yards with their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead browns came right back 172 yards to tie the game but that's where it stood raiders missing a 39-yard field goal their last possession still a 7-7 game across that 45-yard line on a first and twenty play he got back about seven kuzano knocked him down marcus allen a young man who's known the heights the heisman trophy winner in 81. super bowl most valuable player the main man in the raider offense did a good job too of just kind of bouncing through that hole and finally getting his feet on the ground that's a good pickup the collegiate marcus allen set an ncaa record running for over 2300 yards as a [Music] senior [Applause] another flag thrown very late mcconnell maybe on dokey williams again minifield at least thinks they are we'll find out now they're marking walking towards cleveland stokey williams the spitter from ucla called on a pushing foul a little bit ago and another one was thrown in his area browns are signaling their bench it's going to be against the raiders now the officials are talking it out trying to find out exactly first no foul los angeles certain amount of frustration there when a receiver can't get open all that hand fighting with the pump and run got to keep your cool offense unnecessary roughness number 85 [Applause] dokey a little fired up here today he's not decides to be fired up either 510 175. that's a big foul all the way back to the 33-yard line this stride started on the cleveland side of the field at the browns 48 and now the raiders are all the way back to their 33 in a tie game 7-7 with 4 37 to play in the first half one thing about it though don raiders are used to penalties most penalized team in about the last seven or eight years of the nfl nobody loves goliath the raiders widely booed but they sell out just about every arena they go into every ballpark in the league waits for him this is a proving ground for a lot of football teams if you can play with the raiders that means you're good two things are certain about the raiders when they go on the road place is going to be sold out and the other team isn't going to be flat crowd really starts up and there's 80 000 here backing the browns allen gets across the 35-yard line but cleveland shuts down the run so now the browns will get it back with 425 to play in the first half that drive ned at the los angeles raiders of minus 20 yards two personal fouls in the same drive against dokey williams one was a pushing foul the other just a personal foul call for hitting in a defensive back so ray guys on the field of punt and back teeth now for the cleveland browns brian brennan former all-american at boston college a small wide receiver but very quick liken him to steve larsen beautiful hit by ray guy brennan gonna let it roll and the raiders are gonna get it down at the two yard line of cleveland that side is so soft don and when that ball hit it just died absolutely died so ray guy who's punted for more yards than anybody in the history of the game hits a 61 yarder in his career he's punted for over 22 miles over 39 000 yards and above all he can place the ball with 3 41 now left to play in the first half it's a tie game 7-7 and the browns looking for good field position instead find themselves pinned back at their two-yard line john brennan made the right choice there too at the 10-yard line the punt returner must let the ball go but it's so soft down there that ball was just cradled into that side stop dead and that's one time ray guy didn't want a foot more on the punt [Music] now if converted coaster do here he'll probably try to run it out with one of those big backs aligned in the eye behind him yard line now let's go to bob costas at nfl 85 bob all right don the bengals come back and close it to seven again at houston boomer assistant zips this one 20 yards to the number one draft choice eddie brown on the point after attempt steve kreider picked up a fumble he's the holder and ran it in for the point so they get it anyway and trail by seven whatever it takes freighter is a guy like that he can do a lot of things for you jefferson back in the ball game now for the cleveland browns still awaiting his first reception as a brown [Music] second down and seven now for cleveland beautiful kevin mack has the ball he's across the 25 taking on tacklers he's out to the 30 and there's a penalty marker down at the line of scrimmage it'll come back ozzy newsome 82. he moved early wow that wasn't as much of a pass as it was kind of a shot he led him perfectly though but yes he did the no avail is misfired the line of scrimmage cost the browns a big gain and would have gotten them out of trouble this is a pass a lot of quarterbacks have been around a long time don't throw very well well i'm not sure you can really call this one a throw watch the way bernie gets it he kind of shot puts it out there all he's trying to do is make sure he gets it in the hands of the receiver big pickup brought back by a legal procedure so instead of getting out of jail and not to the 30-yard line the browns now are back at their two-yard line 2 48 to play in the first half of the game is still tied 7-7 as it was early in the first quarter both teams scoring on their opening drives pogba boom the door set for the dallas touchdown a field goal by mcfadden the eagles making seven to three cowboys gosar goes to the run on second and nine and the raiders don't give much matt millen filling rod mark was there so is mcilroy now my estimation the raider defense should take timeouts here the offense can can stop the clock the defense can't i think they're doing the cleveland browns a favor some thunderous hits administered particularly down on the goal line either way when the people are just blasting straight ahead on the zone blocking and we're going to hear the music of nsl goal line football it's really what a goal line offense with the browns have been running here to try to get out of this accepting that pass that was called back two minutes now showing on the clock in a moment they'll call timeout see the raiders just wasted 39 seconds if they'd have called a defensive timeout they had to have the ball before the two-minute warning which is an extra stoppage of play so it's 7-7 two minutes to play first half raiders have been dominant in the series over cleveland six and one in regular season two and oh in the playoffs browns have never beat them here in cleveland two minutes to go now in the first half don quickie with bob trumpy at cleveland stadium it's sold out on an overcast day on the shores of lake erie the lights have been out since the opening kickoff 80 000 are here as the raiders sharing the afc westernly with seattle and denver all at 4 and two coming in hook up with the browns the sole leader of the afc central at four and two [Applause] [Music] jefferson [Music] van mcelroy in coverage this is as close as he's come to catching one a very gutty call by the cleveland offense even with the pass rush of the los angeles raiders bernie stands back there this is well thrown when jj leaves his feet can't really control the ball fourth down and the raiders with 154 on the first half block could get very good field position another poor punt fulton walker takes it at the cleveland 41. brown's come sticking on special teams he's been averaging 14 yards of return but not today but the punting of gossip has been abysmal watch this throw once again sets up very well he's looking it's there it's there did he catch it oh so close once again great field position now for the los angeles raiders last drive minus 20 yards on that drive raiders though with plenty of time now to get some points up as this game is still tied 7-7 as it was in the first quarter 142 to play as you see in the first half mark wilson working at quarterback hawkins and marcus hall and his runners jesse hester wide receiver speed to the left he's running deep but the ball goes to marcus allen who loses one db and takes it inside the 25-yard line el grosse the strong safety tried to get him and marcus beat him with a shoulder deak and went ahead for a 16-yard gain for the raiders and stops the clock he's such a threat he's simply an outlet receiver here but this ball is thrown about four yards deep and he turns it into about a 16 or 17 yard game that's what you want him stop there dead cousino drags him out of bounds stops the clock first down raiders always a threat to throw the ball oh now when he catches a pass but in the backfield marcus allen is a very good high school quarterback lincoln high in san diego there's a big play kyle harrison a former eagle comes up to make the stop on amanda did you see the game clock winding down to 126 where it's stopped by a raider timeout so as chris barr starts thinking field goal we break for this word they're standing by at nfl 85 bob and amanda next to update things on the seventh sunday of play we have co-leaders in their divisions today brown's actually sole leader for the first time this late in the season in five years in the afc central and marcus hall and trump we've been watching him 120 yards a game he pointed out at the outset he gets running and catching the ball got 70 today yeah 11 carries 40 yards rushing two catches 30 yards receiving and don't forget that big block on the touchdown run by hawkins first touchdown of the game a 21-yard run by frank hawkins with alan king in the way with a block and here now is wilson christensen is down inside the 15-yard line where he's knocked down by al gross going to the line of scrimmage play already called or wilson will call it at the line of scrimmage plenty of time no reason to panic dopey williams on the right flank falcons gets it down to the 10 so the raiders are right straight ahead and very excellent field goal position but still a lot of time left as they stop the clock with 59 seconds to play in the first half the raider offense keyed around mark wilson in the absence of jim plunkett the back up to wilson is a rookie from oklahoma state rusty hillger they're very high on the raider fans sure are they wanted him all last sunday came in through 129 yard reception that went back out well i have a theory that every fan everywhere wants the guy sitting on the bench to start no matter who he is what color he wears the guy in the bench is better than the guy started of course they see him one game a weekend and the coaches see him six days a week but when you pay fifteen dollars or twenty dollars you know better than the coach put in the back one time when the raiders were playing up in oakland they took a man on the street survey asked him what they liked best about raider football one guy said the last two minutes that's when ken stabler was there this is where they're tough 59 seconds to go now as we're in the last two minutes of the first half and the tie game 7-7 schottenheimer's browns number one on the afc on defense take it in first in ten wilson throws and tom rogers had a hand on the ball they were looking again at todd christensen second down once again great contact legal contact by the cleveland browns defense you see a good rush here too games all over the place up front rogers almost picks that off that would have been a spectacular catch second down and 10. they can get a first down don yeah they can they're at the 11. talked about stabler leading those comebacks but over the years doesn't matter who the quarterback has been the raiders have been the best to beat the clock wilson right now has completed 8-15 for a 111. christensen's caught four for 56. [Applause] touchdown marcus allen comes down with the ball and the raiders break the tie as marcus allen who among other things was his all-state basketball player shows that rebound ability going up to take it down that's his 49th catch touchdown scored in 47 games he ran it out and up and i'll tell you trump you know they talk about pass offense starting with cass blocking that raider front has taken care of wilson they know he's hurt they gave him time that's his third catch of the day now 41 yards and that touchdown 11 yards on that catch it can do everything probably can kick extra points too the more he gets it the more he likes it he's going to carry it every play if they want him to great durability now with 48 seconds left to play in the first half the raiders break the tie in the touchdown throw mark wilson to marcus allen it's a 14-7 game los angeles thing you gotta like about marcus allen too he's they're every down watch allen come out of the backfield you see him on the right he runs out to the flat and then turns up wilson sees the coverage marcus just goes into the end zone up over midfield makes the catch you see marcus allen in the background there oh all christians trying to do is draw coverage boy that's a spectacular catch there's no way minifield can stop that without interfering with him and then it's first and goal really a good looking play and we have to hearken back to those injuries that wilson's playing with he's long on courage as you said at the outset they said the raiders his ankle is less than 100 percent his shoulders way less than 100 but he's 110 on guts and he'll be in there for us he's now 9 of 16 mark wilson putting that throw to marcus allen for the touchdown for 122 yards passing offense marcus allen with his fifth touchdown of the year he scored 18 last season i wonder if it's that number what's that i wonder if it's that number if i were running back in the nfl i'd want that number yeah you've got to be awful good to wear don't you he's good he's uphill the 32 over the years the jim brown number o.j simpson and here's the kick to glenn young of the cleveland browns he's a slasher and he almost broke him he got to the 24. big play by travis tucker on a block for the cleveland browns jeff barnes came down to make the tackle for los angeles this is a zone coverage by the cleveland browns you can see eddie johnson 51 dropping back there just reading the eyes of the quarterback this is all wilson and allen he gets into the end zone comes down with the football minifield had no chance there appeared to be there should have been underneath coverage there to help out there wasn't big catch trump you were talking about wilson's record as a starting quarterback 16-9 a lot of people forget he quarterbacked the team at byu that was 11-0 he's a winning player that was a great throw and catch for some strange reason that has not been enough now the browns in their two-minute offense with only 44 seconds on the clock go right to the shotgun on first down fire runs and a hit is made and it was a beauty by rod martin a provo linebacker don we set this football game up as the cleveland browns the second best rushing offense in the nfl in the first half they've not run the ball with real consistency and their entire offense seems to stem off that the play action passes browns have got to run the ball well this is what happened to him last week they didn't run the ball well in the first half houston led had half brown fans booing as cleveland gonna go to the locker room without running any more plays flores and the raiders have to be happy they don't like to come to chilly weather and even though they've won here every time they've played they don't particularly like this stadium not with 80 000 people rooting against him in a very good cleveland team but the raiders have stood tall in the first half playing sound football coming up with some big drives when they had to including the opening one and then the last one of the half but mark wilson brought them into the end zone with that touchdown throw to marcus allen so the raiders a team that is said by their management to be struggling as a team that right now has a very impressive first half to its credit from the thing i liked and if you characterize the los angeles raiders they are a team of great team speed and i think in the opening drive when hawkins runs the ball in the end zone they showed it and the speed with allen when he got into the end zone on that last reception once again you showed the team speed they're just outstanding they have so many weapons dan schuler calls the raiders the fastest team in football they believers that speed kills although they've not gone deep very much today in fact twice when they tried to they're a great flanker dokie williams their deep threat of the moment their deep burner was called for fouls well that bump and run defense that cleveland runs is going to allow marcus allen todd christensen to be open underneath and mark wilson is smart enough and so is tom florey he's calling the players on the sideline just to get it to those guys turn him loose let him pick up yardage up field always the commitment to excellent sign at the los angeles coliseum as the raiders fans know there must be five thousand of them second to washington in the nfl but not today look what the raiders have done to the brown running game held at the 39 yards and that's the secret to the browns offense run that ball and play action off of it here's chris farr kicking off a spinning kick taken by glenn young he'll go to the 22 24 yard line still working on it maybe he got to the 25. kosair's passing numbers also trump weren't very happy for the cleveland fans two of six just 43 yards as a comparison mark wilson even though injured nine of 16 123 yards and a touchdown but the browns are still in the balkan down just seven points but they've got to be able to run the football this is a very similar half to the half that they had last week against houston don would you agree yep and i recall very vividly the first pass that kosar through in the second half was a 68-yard touchdown to clarence weathers weathers right now is troubled by an egg a leg injury he's not in the game glenn young is on the left flank and brian brennan's on the right to the lower portion of your screen first down and 10 for cleveland those are looking long just like a week ago but comes up short second down and 10 for the browns looking at glenn young a third year player from mississippi state primarily a kick returner reggie mckenzie on the coverage there ernie now two of seven you need better stats out of your quarterbacks than that regardless of the problems your offense is having in the first half young was open should have got the ball to him there heaven call lyle alzado's number a lot couldn't run for much here except for the exits the fans really got on the last time he came in here's the handoff straight ahead and they'll cross to the 30-yard line because kevin mack of the browns and matt millen knock him down for the raiders on the play with 14 33 to play he came into the game averaging 5.1 yards per carry has not been close to that today elzada really is a pretty amazing athlete though 15th year they talk about the legs being the first thing to go usually it's the enthusiasm he still has that he can still play he's the old man he's the teacher for for uh sean jones giant defensive end raiders like lyle said or he's their type of person and a winning player for him now third and seven and costar from the shotgun big rush and townsend knocks him down it's a sackback of the 21. greg townsend a third year player with tremendous takeoff speed very quick one of the fastest raiders certainly the fastest defensive lineman he just ran by the blocker this is the first sack the cleveland browns have allowed today they protected kosar and danielson very well but that's more because it's a very short passing game you can't run it you can't run that high percentage passing game that's what's happened to cleveland here's gassadoo's punting has been a very negative stat for the browns this time he hits a good one downfield and fulton walker fair catches it as 34. so gossip the young punter who had his problems connecting in the first half hits a 44 yard as you see no return so the raiders go on offense for the first time in the third quarter they'll have the ball at their 34-yard line leading the game 14-7 raiders though seven points scored right at the end of the first half you have no idea what what that does to a team when you score the points and the way it makes the defense feel when you score points against them going into the half now you shut cleveland down to start the second half you got a chance to put more points on the board he said something to wilson when they broke the huddle marcus allen the sprint draw stock play in the raider arsenal that carries marcus allen out across the 40-yard line of the 42. allen waits a step and then takes off on the quick draw don rogers on the tackle and of course when you hear the name of the safeties making awful lots of tackles you know the defensive line is not doing their job brown's defensive coordinator tom bettis says we don't blitz a lot because we get such good people we don't have to we play a straight up defense raiders playing one of their best games this season maybe the best since the jets game you're the opener here's a handoff and marcus allen in open field inside the 45-yard line sees there's no further road and he takes it out of bounds for a 15-yard gain and the raiders start to challenge again watch don rodgers he's the safety they catch the defense in a shift power the formation went one side hawkins with a great block number 27 alan out there boy he floats doesn't he 15-yard run remember the cleveland browns have not allowed a running back to rush for 100 yards in 24 straight games this being the 25th he's now got 63 yards and over 40 yards catching the ball he's over 100 for the day won't get anything here though defensive end reggie camp comes up to get marcus allen in the raider backfield the knockdown will be made outside the cleveland 45-yard line they'll spot it right at the 45. didn't look like reggie was tough by touched by anybody to pull camp just comes in from behind the pole there to make the tackle nobody gets very much against this cleveland defense with the raiders today using a lot of different plays same people getting the ball but different ways right now the raiders have a 14-7 lead wilson throws and christensen comes up with a ball there's a marker down both in the backfield and where christensen caught it he said he got it roughing the passer took a shot at wilson did the cleveland browns and vendreath was there to call it and i think the other flag is on cleveland too going to be pass interference against al gross stopping the clock with 1202 to play in the third quarter both against cleveland and they'll take the one that cost them the most yards defensive pass interference declines roughing the passer will be accepted 15 yards in a first down now one of the problems that tight ends now face because of the bump and run coverage on the outside the release off the line and the contact made by people down the line you see eddie johnson on the inside gross on the outside hand on the jersey same he's just kind of leading him around the defensive backfield there contact first down raiders so the raiders have quieted this crowd now that penalty took something away from the browns and here's wilson going back to his ace marcus allen heading back the other way look at the blockers form and finally allen was chopped at the 36. it was a channel of blockers on the far side when he cut back but eddie johnson the inside linebacker split them and got through for a five-yard knockdown a loss on the play mark wilson once again trying to make a block but he thinks wait a minute what am i doing here watch when ellen cuts back you'll see mark wilson just kind of dive down to the ground there to avoid contact gets in somebody's way well that's about as good a block as you'll see from a quarterback in any game good second look our producer today for nbc sports is kenneth edmondson our director richard klein ted nathanson the coordinating producer of nbc football here to see this big game as the raiders go long and the ball is broken up inside the five yard line dokey williams was on the fly and frank minifield the little guy who can go up knocked it down great coverage one of the things you'll notice here that minifield does he gets himself between the receiver and the quarterback watch at the top of the screen he makes sure that if the ball is going to complete it's got to go through him he's right inside the receiver perfect position by frank minfield he's able to just tip it away raiders only two for seven on third down conversions in the first half let's see what they do now as they have third and long third 15. raiders lead the game 14-7 [Music] [Applause] well-thrown ball but doki williams was a little late turning back to look at it so it comes up incomplete and ray guy comes out to punt the ball for los angeles and prediction and coverage there at the bottom of the screen right in front of us here you'll see the hand-to-hand combat and about right now the ball is thrown get your head around he does get his head around but he can't get his hands up that was a well thrown ball by wilson and should have been caught by dokey williams ray guy a great placement punter about it ten times last week against new orleans five of those went out of bounds inside the 20-yard line angles far sideline that's a spiral deep they're gonna spot it out of bounds five yard line great kick oh this guy first in 95 for the cleveland browns what a weapon 13th gear ray guy doing it better than ever stadium is the side of the action don crooke with bob trumpy browns have the ball but they have it in the problem area at their five yard line trailing the raiders 14 to seven in the third quarter kosar swings it out that was the play to back earlier that was called back you'll remember in the first half back is out to the 20. so he gets out of jail 15 yard gain for the browns great call but in big games like this look where they've started and what's happened for the cleveland browns field position has been absolutely terrible for cleveland throughout this football game that first one of course after the opening touchdown drive first time the browns got their hands on the ball that's their last five possessions they got to run the ball and they got to run it with consistency john jefferson at the top of your screen has yet to catch a ball as a cleveland brown they're going to look at them before long this time they go to kevin mac on the run and the raiders come hitting again make the knock down at the 24 yard line that's vintage raiders not late but almost late just on time piling on that's what builds the reputation of the los angeles raiders this is a good pickup by the cleveland browns about four yards mckenzie holds him up one two three four five and wait wait six brings up second down and six now for the browns they're looking long coats are fires far flank makes the connection with ozzie newsome it looks like a first down it is out to the 33-yard line trump we've talked about the browns haven't run to get in this game i think they got to throw i think the raiders are going to stuff their run all day because they've done it so far nine yards on the catch but don the thing that sets up the cleveland brown offense you've got to hold those linebackers at the line of scrimmage to free people like ozzy newsom you do have to establish control of the line of scrimmage and that you can only do by running the football and that's what marty schottenheimer wants his offense to accomplish and you've got to get the ball in the hands of your all flow players and ozzie newsome is one of them consensus all pro tight end caught two today for 20 yards gosar takes a look here's a big rush he fires oh there's a penalty marker in the welcome one harry holt number 81 a former all-pro player in canada was held by mike davis before the ball came in he did a great job too holt did when he turned around to look back at kozar he realized where davis was behind him and he held his position he didn't move and of course in lunging out to the football davis had to go through the receiver to get it defense 36 pass interference first down so the penalty assessment is 12 yards against the raiders now watch at the top of the screen watch him hold his position you see the contact there davis he holds his position see there great job by holt last moment he dives out that causes the interference very smart play by the young man out of canada mike davis they'll never forget the play he made here though in cleveland january 4 1981. he stopped the browns in a playoff game with that end zone interception when the temperature was about 40 degrees below zero at the chill factor the rest as they say is history the raiders went on to route philadelphian super bowl 15. now though it's first down for cleveland fake the reverse kevin mack takes it ahead and he gets it on eight across the 50-yard line down to the raider 48. first time that play's been called today well they're moving it around calling a lot of different formations kind of holding the raiders at the line of scrimmage scoreboard changing the steelers we're down three nothing badly in need of a win now they've roared back buffalo yet to win a game mike today sold 22 000 tickets to that one that's all that was all all right somebody that led the nfl on attendance not that many years ago averaged 80 000 a game one year so 79 and change you don't win they don't show second down and four now for the browns kevin mack didn't get much nice play by matt miller who shot the gap made the first hit for los angeles as the knockdown was at the 46-yard line of the raiders and the game clock shows 7 45 to play in the third quarter trump raiders have done an outstanding job against what i think is a much improved offensive team in the cleveland browns they just about totally shut down the running offense of the cleveland browns marty schattenheimer putting the ball in the hands of a young starting pitcher bernie kosar ozzie newsome said when coaster came in the game for the first time in regular season he came into the huddle with a big smile on his face he said right away it was his huddle you knew the guy's going to do something for you brought the browns from behind last week he'll have to do it again today if he can the long ball ozzy newsome's out there very nearly interference nuisance looking for a call and doesn't get one this is the part of the game that has changed so much in 1985 if that defensive back can look back at the quarterback there's an awful lot of contact that's allowed inside release watch davis see his left arm go up there yep but his head is back perfect coverage so the officials say hey they're both going for the football rule of my estimation has been hard to enforce by the officials but davis certainly was looking back at it so they couldn't fault him and now gossett's on the field to punt the ball for cleveland and fulton walker is back at his 10 yard line for los angeles angle punt near side could be trouble for the raiders it is that's where the emily raiders go on offense first and ten still 14-7 raiders when we come back while we were away there was a penalty marker on that punt by gossip that was down to the nine yard line legal man downfield for the browns so they had a repunt next one was a 39 yarder with no return that carried down to the 16 17 yard line of the raiders that's where mark wilson will go with his offense first and ten after he consults with head coach tom flores floyd is now in his seventh year as the raider coach not in big games like this field position so vitally important to winning this is the first time that the los angeles raiders have had the ball back inside their 20s that i can remember today the doubleheader day on nbc sports the jets are rolling the afc east play at new england today seattle and denver two of the other co-leaders in the asc west along with the raiders match their four and two records at mile high stadium we have 6 52 to play in the third quarter here at cleveland the raiders lead the game 14-7 and have the ball first and 10. wilson gets the johnson johnson award this week there's the the dog that's the dog pound they're all barking down there wilson with all his injuries along the way he's playing the dog house the dog [Music] house the raiders have been no dogs here today they've played very sound football on both sides of the line of scrimmage and right now the raiders with the crowd noise starting up set it up first and ten allen he got five [Music] free safety don rodgers tackled him jim plunkett a long time raider in his 15th year but he'll not play again this season going out with the shoulder injury plunkett a lot of people forget a lot of people didn't know this guy was a great linebacker in high school is an all-state linebacker in california he's got the size all-state wrestler but now he can only look at as another less injured quarterback mark wilson directs the raiders in quite well long ball dokey williams he's there and williams is down to the 40-yard line of what of the cleveland browns al gross saved a touchdown but that shoulder and all mark wilson drills a tight spiral for a 38-yard game that was a tremendous throw in between two receivers it looked like a double rotation zone corner up safety over and watching put it right in between the two boy that's a great catch and an excellent pattern run by doki williams al gross on the coverage raiders have just gotten their offense together today this is an outstanding defense by the cleveland browns the raiders have not paid a lot of respect to it i want to get you to explain a double rotation those of us didn't go to mit i will tell you hitch back marcus is they do why is that a big play for cleveland first turnover of the ball game the double rotation zone means nothing now [Music] on the pitch by mark wilson it did appear to get to the hands of marcus allen a lot of times a running back you see the pitch well it was thrown a little bit behind him hawkins out in front as good a hands as marcus allen has though that's an easy catch for him i have a feeling he was just looking up field browns are going to have to go deep with the throw to beat this los angeles team they're not going to beat him running takes the ball ahead for three yards to the 50. but as you pointed out trump you've got to keep those linebackers in position if they can drop back and pass coverage and they know you're going to throw you're trying to complete against eight yeah the thing that the cleveland browns must remember they're still squarely in this ballgame down by just a touchdown and you can still keep the ball on the ground and influence that raider defense and influence it a lot and that opens up the pass game there's no reason to go out of the offensive game plan for the browns yet very big turn of events the fumbled pitch back by marcus allen and the raider drivers down to now the cleveland browns trailing by seven of the ball in the third quarter 434 to plan at the clock running costar takes a look gets some time guns it up the middle and he's incomplete here's markers down all over lester hayes will have the flag thrown on him lester i take no prisoner hayes holding brian vernon's uniform how many holding or pass interference penalties have we had against the raiders today more than they like so two big plays now the fumble recovery and here's the defensive foul against lester hayes and the browns when what was an incomplete pass instead get up first down at the raider 45 that defensive pass interference or illegal use of the hands by the raiders being the brown's biggest play of the day it's happened several times kosar has been a great deep thrower his whole career right now he has a first in 10 at the 45-yard line of los angeles raiders lead the game 14-7 third quarter pitch back finer open field and ernest feiner from east carolina takes it all down to the 31-yard line of the raiders for a cleveland brown first down as it starts to rain here in cleveland hard no matter how they run the ball down they've got to run the ball defenses are taught once the quarterback goes by the deepest running back look at that coming down in sheets linebackers are taught that once the quarterback goes past the deepest running back you drop in coverage but in that particular instance bernie drop back just a little shovel pass forward if byner drops it it's just an incomplete pass good call now they go again first down and 10 for cleveland 32-yard line of los angeles brown's down by seven co-star loops one out and there's nothing that raiders nearest to it who is he throwing it to i think he's looking at john jefferson who one of these days going to catch a pass for cleveland bernie's got to learn that you don't kind of hang it up there that one could have been fair caught by anybody four of eleven for 67 yards he's used to throwing the ball in the rain too that should be no problem out of miami they very suddenly played a game when it didn't rain man doing his barking for the browns bark louder they need it got that bark juice in him i think second and ten for cleveland great play down to the 23-yard line the wizard of oz they call him catches his third pass on second and 10 he gains nine yards he's caught three now for 29 yards from first half the los angeles raiders were able to put lots of pressure on kozar second half he's had plenty of time to throw this one zinged out there to newsom knew some off his feet makes the catch not enough for a first down but a very very big catch and he can make some big catches for you tremendous hands he's just a great player great leader on and off the field right now third one breaks across he's down to the 20 and he has a first down for cleveland as now on the shores of lake erie the weather's turned ugly the temperature dropping and a hard rain has begun to fall making an already wet field even more difficult to move on like this now the adrenaline pumping in the cleveland grounds too really going at it this has been a very impressive drive after that turnover the only turnover of the ball game and the browns are going to make good on it big boys from california trump aren't used to this kind of weather now is a raider down on the play brad van pelt an outside linebacker shake it up [Applause] well there's a pause in the action with 351 to play in the third quarter we'll be back [Applause] temperatures dropping but the action's heating up here in cleveland 3 42 to play in the third quarter the browns down by seven with a first and ten at the raider 20. driving rain now rounds go right at the los angeles defense for about three inside of the 17-yard line byner the 220-pound fullback took the ball sixth play in this drive after the fumble recovery by tom cousino philadelphia getting back in the game at veterans stadium against the cowboys three paul mcfadden field goals houston has now extended its lead to a big margin over cincinnati and the browns find themselves down by seven to los angeles those guys on the right side are doing some blocking lilija moved out number 62 made a big block met millenfield to make the hit on the second and seven play the ball was advanced to the 14-yard line so it's going to bring up third down and a short five still staying with her game plan which i admire for the cleveland browns see beiner's numbers for the day came in with over 400 yards in the first six games for cleveland his running mate kevin mack had an average of over five yards of carrying 47 yards for the browns running the ball for six games raiders primarily though with a stunning defensive shutdown a lot of running plays here's a ball into the end zone brennan is there and he can't get to it there's no call they rule the defensive back sam seal was looking back at the ball which he was so it's a clean play and brennan has screened off from the football that brings up fourth down that bump and run by these two teams is outstanding you see the contact but both are looking for the football therefore no flag bernie likes to throw it deep there's no question about that matt barr the brother of raider kicker chris bars on the field now he's made only three or four this year hasn't tried many this is a 31-yarder if successful in the rain it'll bring it to a 14-10 count raiders looks like he's got it he does so with two minutes and one second to play in the third quarter the browns capitalize move down the field and they now have come back to within four and we'll be back with a cleveland kickoff after this chris barr ready to kick it off for cleveland or matt fires brother he just hit the 31-yard field goal in matt fire to bring the browns back to within four center downfield goes to sam seal he's quick gets him to the 30-yard line and there the raiders go on offense with a four-point lead and 153 to play in the third quarter travis tucker was on the stop dallas still holding to a five-point lead over the eagles at philadelphia now in the fourth quarter could you believe it at day's end spending world champions the 49ers could be three and four and four full games behind the rams in their division los angeles is winning big at kansas city right now giants beating washington soundly 17 to nothing jesse hester goes in motion the give goes to marcus allen raiders trump talk about their offense allen gets the ball almost all the time as a runner said we really run a two-back off but it was a one-back offense with the second back in just really to block functions very much like the one back officer i don't blame them either hawkins is an excellent blocking running back and marcus allen now 18 carries 64 yards as many times as you can get in his hands that's very smart offense bruce davis left tackle lines up charlie hannah left guard down over the ball of center gives it to wilson on second and six intercepted gross has the ball for cleveland and finally mark wilson himself gets him down but it's inside the 15-yard line to the raiders [Music] [Applause] [Music] you can hear him in the background barking in the doghouse christensen was the intended receiver they had double coverage inside and outside on christensen generally a very high percentage pass completion for any offense gross in the right place 26-yard line van pelt coming from the left outside a linebacker blitz and he got bernie cosa the second sack of the day of the cleveland quarterback here's the interception once again you see the coverage we've seen this before eddie johnson bumps him that ball just thrown christians and seemed to stop in his pattern gross right there to make the interception two turnovers today both for the cleveland browns great defensive play call too by the raiders and here's the sack too it looks like van pelt was untouched first down they go to a linebacker blitz and nobody laying a glove on van pell loops it out kevin matt can't get to the balls kosar was pressured and released a little bit short with 38 seconds down the third quarter clock and it was howie long in the backfield again pressuring kosar he's gotten his hand up in bernie's face a couple of times that time tipped the ball again there was absolutely nothing on the pass you see just at the end that's a dying quail most difficult pass to catch and that thing is diving into the ground oh this is a missed opportunity to this point for the cleveland browns that sack was big because it puts the cleveland browns if they don't convert here into long field goal position depending what they do raiders digging in there'll be a flight at bernie kosar setting in the shotgun but he's going to run himself [Music] down inside the 15-yard line he's well short of a first down but he does make it a sure shot field goal now for matt barr the other thing is though he's got a field goal no matter where he is out there you got to try to throw the ball in that instance don that's too long a field goal though under the open end with that wins look at that flag straight out blowing in but but still that's the field goal kicker's responsibility not the quarterback if he throws the ball it's a lot easier to gain the needed yards than it is for bernie cosar to run it they're gonna let the quarter run out so they'll have that win at their back they'll be back after these messages from your local station [Music] we're ready to start the fourth quarter at cleveland the browns now changing ends will have a strong wind at the back of matt barr who sets up for a 31-yard field goal attempt if he hits it cleveland will be within one of los angeles got it air tight it's a 14-13 game raiders have the ball and the browns will kick it off so the big play by el gross the interception does not result in a go-ahead touchdown but the browns do come away with points the sack by van telt was enormous yeah that was an awful big play the two turnovers now by the los angeles raiders have cost them two field goals which if you're a raider fan and supporter at least the raiders have kept the cleveland browns out of the end zone with great field position on both turnovers marty schottenheimer is just now completing a first year as head coach of the cleveland browns as of next week it'll be his one year on the job he took over at the halfway mark a season ago and the rounds were one and seven stepped in for sam rotigliano they finished four and four the rest of the way were beaten in oventime their opening game by the st louis cardinals and the browns had lost so many close games a season ago shot timer and sister this is a new year we're not going to lose close games they came back and started to win winning four their last five and three in a row to take sole possession of first in their division see how much numbers mean nothing time of possession clearly in favor of the cleveland browns and the raiders lead now matt barr who hits consecutive field goals for cleveland hits the kickoff downfield and well sam sia will not bring it out [Applause] [Music] so the raiders go on offense first and ten at their 20-yard line mark wilson at quarterback has been effective until that last throw when he tried to drill it into coverage to his tight end christensen and gross came away with a ball the raiders are trying to control this ball and pound it at them i think they'll pretty much stay with their game plan last two times they've had the ball of course they've turned it over to the cleveland browns but you can't go away from your game plan gomez now on the side of the cleveland browns marcus allen gets his number called and the browns really fire out on defense golic the nose tackle led the charge along with linebacker eddie johnson brown's defense and them dogs are now fired up barking loud this uh they actually spark in the defensive huddle yes they do they as opposed to saying good job they bark i guess one is a good job too is a spectacular job i'm not sure what the conversation is like down there sometimes you'd be inclined to think that a grown man barking might not be a well man but defensive player had the last two possessions by the raiders it was grounding but now intentional grounding call is going to be signaled against wilson and the raiders and now let's go back to nfl 85 bob well don when trump gets back to cincinnati those callers on his talk show will be in a foul humor rookie ray childress smacks boomer assistant it causes a fumble into the hands of mike stensrud moments later moon to drew hill 34 yards it's now 34-13 [Applause] that's the most expensive penalty an offense can have accosted yards and a down that it was surely intentional grounding was going to be sacked he just released the ball to a wide open area of the field he hit green but there was a receiver near it the reason it took the official a long time before it throws the flag is the referee is back there to protect the quarterback first he looks for the late hit then he looks for the intentional marcus grounding is the engine that drives the raider offense and he's only got four yards in his last six carries they are really fired up in cleveland 80 000 strong donna looked like a busted play nobody blocked reggie camp but mark wilson handed the ball to frank hawkins reggie camp was standing right there hawkins had no place to go nobody blocked him is right a lot of time to go though 13 30 to play we'll have no tie game here it's a 14-13 score guy one of the main men for the raiders hits a long spiral downfield brian brennan goes back in the rain fields the ball light rain down he's down at his 48-yard line 37-yard punt by ray guy and just a two yard return as a new raider jerry robinson was down to cover [Applause] rookie with bob trump at cleveland stadium a place to be this sunday afternoon as the browns trail the raiders 14-13 with 1306 to play in the game cleveland with a ball and to the run on first down goes to fullback 510 215 pound ernest byner who is knocked down by matt millen this is the third straight drive now that the cleveland browns have started inside the 50-yard line previous to of course just six points two field goals raiders have done a good job trump shutting down the run bonner and mack working hard to share 80 yards 81 yards spiner has 40 and mack has 41 in a combined 27 carries kevin mack runs the ball nice stutter step then accelerating into the gap mile alzado made the tackle for the raiders but it brings up third down and four for cleveland that was a short crap by the browns back did an outstanding job of waiting for the block that was that stutter step giants continue to lead over the redskins the l.a rans looking to extend their mark to 7-0 houston's going to get a second win after an opening day upset of miami detroit now their lead cut to just two over the 49ers but atlanta looking like they might win a first game so might buffalo the browns on third in a long five long four really as cosar sets up in the shotgun they give him time almost picked off by sam seal he's a former wide receiver seal the browns can't move it down so they have to punt the ball back to los angeles with 11 38 to play intended receiver was clarence weathers of the browns purity tried to force that one there was coverage all over clarence weathers fourth straight incompletion by bernie kosar his numbers not very impressive today running the ball the key to winning for cleveland in the last 16 games and they've rushed 36 or more times they've compiled a 14-2 record well hit ball by gossip angling at near sideline and he gets it out of bounds we'll see where i'm gonna spot it at the 11. a little farther up field now to keep walking and bring it to the 13-yard line a 30-yard punt but placed out of bounds inside the 15-yard line so the silver and black come back out with a one-point lead and 11 30 to play in the game throwing the ball trump but at the end of the day it might be good enough to win what he's doing uh he's your quarterback for the cleveland browns for the rest of this ballgame you can't make a change now with just 11 30 to go in the fourth quarter it's up to the browns defense marcus and there's not much there as he's knocked down at about the 15-yard line marcus helens still hauling that skin brown's still pounding at him as you see they've been shutting him down they really shut down just like pass offense starts with pass blocking run offense starts with run blocking in the cleveland front particularly those very active quick linebackers have been shutting it down this is cleveland defense's game right now from here on out they got to stop the raiders with the cleveland offense as much good field position as they can long ball they're looking at jesse hester but he can't quite get there mark wilson throws a beautiful long ball it's a pure spiral heading down the field and maybe a yard long for jesse hester a flyer out of florida state the raiders number one draft choice and for dixon on the coverage one of the advantages that wilson has he's got to be the tallest quarterback in the nfl at almost almost six seven i think he's listed at 6-6 but about six six and a half as you know trump the raiders bear watching in the fourth quarter last year they led the nfl in fourth quarter scoring this season the fourth quarter has been their highest scoring period again they can play beat the clock they're holding to a one point lead right now are the raiders 14 to 13. big rush and allen can't quite hold on at the 27-yard line thrown behind him just enough pressure by the defensive line to hurry wilson ever so slightly helen on the pattern he runs a good one c-o-a stops and has to come back tough catch tough catch if that one's on the money it's the first down for the raiders the cleveland defense is held again so ray guy is back at his goal line standing at the waddle hit the ball about the five the return man is short-handed brian brennan got 66 passes from flutie as a senior at boston college flutie was a junior here's a long hit downfield brennan fair catching into 48 rounds with good field position after a 37-yard it is a double-header day on nbc sports most of you will see the new york jets a rolling outfit right now go against the new england patriots at foxborough mass and then also there's a very big game at mile high stadium in denver with the seahawks and the broncos hookup both at four and two at the outset of the day tied for first place in the afc west along with the la raiders raiders right here in cleveland are leading 14 to 13. it was projected to be a very close game and it has been that raiders had a 14-7 lead cleveland coming back with consecutive met bar field goals to cut it to one [Applause] got yard line picked up five he's got a great ability trump to wait for his blockers he's not in a hurry yeah that's something you can't teach either you either have that coming to the game or you never seem to really acquire it i guarantee you marcus allen has it last series of downs for the cleveland browns three plays and out that was a pickup of about a yard so young bernie kosar he's only 21 years old from nearby boardman ohio grew up always wanting to play for the browns definitely that's at least the fourth flag on the defensive backs of the los angeles raiders today davis knows it too he has no argument whatsoever that's the first down 10 28 to play we've still got a long way to go the receiver does an excellent job of just being big in this situation realizing the defensive back's got to go through him to make the catch with brian brennan who can't be too big no matter how tall he stands look at that what a difference it hurts so the browns get a first down trailing by one in the fourth quarter more markers as the carry by kevin mac is down to the 40-yard line of los angeles that's one of the things that bernie kosar can do to really help his offense bury the cadence enough to draw some people offsides and that's exactly what he did it'll be first in five for the cleveland browns that's a learned art too defense 75 offside 11th penalty of the day first down [Applause] so the raiders falling back now with the yellow flags thrown against them and now the ball is set down at the 38-yard line of los angeles 37-yard line where they place it there cleveland will go first down at five so ernie kosar for the luxury of a play call you rarely get first slam bang football ernest byner shortest distance between two points and earnest takes it on a straight ahead slash rookie linebacker reggie mckenzie 54 for the raiders made the hit i don't blame the browns for being very conservative in this situation about a clock left though as you see it wind down to 10 minutes in the fourth quarter raiders leading 14 to 13 they led at halftime 14-7 [Music] the only scoring in the second half has been a pair of matt bar field goals for the browns one in the third quarter one in the fourth got a hurry five seconds left on the clock and bernie takes time out two timeouts left now for the cleveland browns they don't want to spoil this drive as they could take the lead with another field goal so kosar comes to the sidelines and will be back into the fourth quarter it's 14 13. runs the ball browns conservative in their offense and a second down and long two call they go down close to a first down i think schottenheimer employers were teammates weren't they they were free 1968. i imagine both appreciate where they are now as compared to them didn't have a great year but it worked out well that was the year the juice came in the next year oh yes one in 13. giants after two straight losses disappointing ones and back now to beat this redskins today 17-13 17-3 excuse me third down and short for the cleveland browns margin of victory can make a difference yes it can this cleveland offense has struggled for most of the day you take away the pass interference penalties by the los angeles raiders they've had a lot of drive stopped raiders have helped them a great deal that really has hurt a series of penalties against los angeles some of the penalties you almost have to take though trump ozzie newson gets open he's been going a long way if he end davis hasn't tackled that's true in this team the los angeles raiders they don't mind taking those penalties johnny davis of powerback is in he's the up back second back through his finder and he's ahead it looks like first down the rain has stopped here in cleveland it rained very hard for a while during the game rain two inches yesterday feels soggy browns power the ball it wasn't easy you'll recall this was a first and five drive a series of downs become three hard runs they get that five yards and so they're down to the 32 yard line marty schatzheimer well aware that his place kicker is very accurate short but matt barr is not a long-range bomber 8 58 to play cleveland content to run the clock down as they try to control the ball still five for 15 throwing dumps it [Applause] [Music] same play they've run with some regularity a little half roll by bernie he's got good protection there fire uncovered for about the third time that was the play they ran in the first half it was called back and watch ozzie newsom if you want to see a block first of all he has trouble getting away from mike davis but watch this block he could find her another few yards davis on the ground now the browns with first down mack wisely puts two arms on the ball something binder did not do and those waiters know how to put their helmet on the football and take it away he holds on gets a little bit but he gets it straight ahead and so the browns are straight away at a field goal attempt with still three more downs coming on this sequence with 8 23 and running in the fourth quarter and the raiders in the lead 14 to 13. matt barr he kicked out a super bowl championship team at pittsburgh [Music] john jefferson in he's on the right flank moving in motion to their side [Music] [Applause] yard line he'll be short of a first down it'll bring up third in about three ran right through the tackle of mike haynes number 22 of the los angeles raiders strong safety mike davis made the tackle for the raiders now the game clock ticks down on what is now turning into a cold day in cleveland down to 7 35 and running in the fourth quarter good block by mack on van pelt now watch find a run right through the tackle of mike haynes looking up for a pickup of about five those are the yards brown soon to go over 100 yards rushing took a lot of carries by two backs to do it though kosar dumps it off and they're going in kevin touchdown and the ground take the lead [Applause] he might be hitting new highs on the decibel count here in cleveland as 80 000 raise the roof for this old stadium on the shores of lake erie a seven yard touchdown play extra point is good [Applause] 707 to go in the game and now the raiders find themselves behind for the first time in the game they trail 20 to 14 and need a touchdown kozar's numbers 7-17 102 yards and that touchdown to kevin mack he didn't have great numbers a week ago as you remember trump he said i'm out here to get w's that's what we got good play action fake holds matt millen we can run that back again you'll see exactly why he is so wide open kevin mack matt mill on the middle linebacker has to respect the run and that's not on the field he's got to make sure that he doesn't allow somebody to run right at him you can see the moment's hesitation by matt millen that allows mack to get out in a flat an easy catch ozark knows when to get it on the money doesn't he down by the goal line watch again watch 55. watch 55. you see the fake holsey already back is out in a flat touchdown philadelphia just beat dallas 16-14 in an upset at philadelphia now the brown's kicking off sam seal sees the ball go in to go out of bounds before they got to the end zone now it's a touch back it comes out to the 20. so the raiders needing a touchdown have 80 yards of real estate down to the cleveland goal line as bernie cosar who wouldn't get nervous if the building was on fire an amazing guy you know one of the signs of an excellent team is a team that doesn't play particularly well still comes up with the winning numbers on the board offensively the cleveland browns have not done anything outstanding they've run one play that's gained him a majority of yards got a lot of penalties against the raiders and they lead team of character but the raiders accepted they can play beat the clock better than anybody they've got time now throwing a completion christensen takes it out of the 24-yard line a 20-14 game the browns in the lead for the first time with the clock running in 650 as you see to play camper dixon made the stop there it is the philadelphia eagles score late in the game jaworski threw to kenny jackson a 36-yard touchdown pass play that brought the eagles from behind the rams with a shutout go to 7-0 a perfect record the bears will try to equal that when they play green bay tomorrow night at soldier field hawkins steps down the second and five plays kyle hairston and tom cousin look at him park you're in cleveland if you're joining us late they have a group called the dog backers defense is the dog the defense parks the defensive they park in the stands for a while it wasn't a whole lot of barking games change on one plane that was certainly the case here the raiders had a 14-7 lead and we're moving the ball well but a pitch back to marcus allen was fumbled that was in the third quarter subsequently the browns turned it into a math bar field goal to get back to within 14 to 10. then another mass fire field goal made it 14-13 and then the browns took it down the field aided by some penalty calls against los angeles and finally on the seven yard swing pass kevin matt took the ball and ran in for the go ahead touchdown big play for [Music] [Applause] the browns defense holds with 5 35 to play fourth down arises for los angeles [Applause] i think these guys didn't want this game they don't have it yet intended for todd christensen but four guys tipped it just enough pressure on wilson that he had to throw it when he did he has tried very hard to get that ball into todd christensen ray guy to punk the ball long punt brennan [Music] mask that's a friendly bounce if he gets the ball out of bounds at least the raiders can't recover it which he does great second look our producer for nbc sports today is kenneth roy edmondson our director richard klein as right now we have 5 23 to play in the game the cleveland browns are holding to a 20-14 lead costar's numbers right hall of fame but uh and rozelle is just what they like [Music] ended up losing yardage on the play as the ball is back at the 25-yard line seven yard loss on the play holding cleveland offense holding 61 declining a penalty second down you got the center mike babb but the raiders will take the play with a loss where they spotted of eight yards all the way back to the 25-yard line so now it's a long yardage play for costar in the cleveland browns mile alzado spent three years here in cleveland after his years at denver they traded under the raiders for an eighth-round draft choice and al zado said that was the biggest motivator they only thought i was worth the number [Applause] eight yard line matt millen knocked him down on the plate raiders looking to get it back now as the game clock keeps it ticking down 435 left to play it's clearing up somewhat in cleveland no threat of rain right now the lights are on fiverr cleveland i think i'd run this not take a chance with a turnover and hope mr gossett gets off his best fun of the day turn it back into the hands of my defense good point defense is what wins games for the cleveland browns and it's gotten stronger as this games go on they do indeed go to the run and kevin mack takes the ball he lost it for a moment raiders think they have it mitchell says no he got really nailed look at that again mikel as you can see his exercise [Applause] watch once again kevin mack on the carry he's the sure-handed ball carrier for the cleveland browns wants to hit and you see the whoa wait a minute he was still up he was still up the raiders pull this one out it won't because they got a lot of breaks hits his best part of the day indeed colton walker back at his 13. the blockers form to the left side and he gets some room to run and fulton walker is out to the 25 but what do we see a flag back at the spot where the ball was punted 54-yard punt a 13-yard return the flag is against cleveland though they're going to make him kick it again for sure offense 88 holdings 10 yards penalty and fourth down now don at that carry by kevin mack i think that was a fumble and a recovery by the los angeles raiders the ground cannot cause a fumble but in the nfl they don't count knees down but you on the replay they definitely lost yeah it looks like looks like the ball was loose watch again we can slow it down decline just as he is about to get hit about right now he's got both hands on the football let's see if we can see that ball is loose that ball is loose he had a knee down too with a man on him well but they're going to mark it where he goes down completely that's tough call [Applause] colton walker the leading punt return now in the american conference awaits the second point fry on this sequence jeff gossett of cleveland who had a bad first half it's begun to hit the ball well it'll come back rory got a chance don great blocks look at this inside the 40 and down to the 35-yard line and a penalty marker down against it would seem los angeles on the return a 38-yard punt but fulton walker brought it back 31 yards but a lot of that's going to come back jeff gasser was the man who came over made the hit so the game clock now is stopped with two minutes and 53 seconds to play the cleveland browns are in the lead 20 to 14. last score of the game was the first time the browns have led all day they trailed seven nothing tied the game 7-7 that was early in the first quarter when both teams scored on their opening drives at halftime with the raiders scoring on a wilson demarcus allen pass just before halftime los angeles had a 14-7 lead at intermission then the scoring in the second half was field goal by matt barr for cleveland another one in the fourth quarter make it 14-13 in the browns have outscored the los angeles raiders 13-0 in these two quarters [Applause] the call a clipping call number 30 illegal block roblox number 30 15 yards stacey turan the thing that hurts most is they don't mark that penalty off from the spot where the return ended they mark it off in the spot where the penalty took place starting to rain again don yeah it is who's that guy talking about it clearing up i don't remember that was me here's a first and ten play a throw by wilson a catch down to the 49 and another penalty marker down i think this time they're going to call hanford dixon on the far side against doki williams hanford dixon's over there talking to the raider bench in his wisdom defensive holding number 29 declining a penalty first down a missed raider field goal that hit the upright was a big problem in this game also [Applause] here's what happened earlier when chris barr kicked one it looked to be on the way in good but it hit the upright bounce back and the raiders were denied points now they go first and ten wilson throws the ball is caught at the 39-yard line eddie johnson was the man who hit jesse hester the rook he has a gain of almost 10 yards and it is a 10-yard game where they spot the ball it'll be a first down 2 23 to go in the football game you can see that the raiders are going away from todd christensen and going to the other side of the field that's just caught a couple of big passes here in the latter stages of this ball game and we harkened back trump to that man on the street one day in oakland when asked what's the best thing about raider football the last two minutes it's coming up two minutes and 20 seconds left to go in this game and the raiders down by six a touchdown on an extra point will win it cleveland browns last season lost nine games in the last two minutes this year they seem to have changed that pattern hawkins runs and he gets a first down for the raiders down to the 37-yard line cuzinho makes the stop and the game clock will now wind down to two minutes to play so it's gonna be fun uh down the stretch front of the game the raiders driving and trailing by six we'll be back [Music] the brothers bar from penn state where their father was the soccer coach on either side of the field matt barr's two second half field goals are really the margin of difference at this point in the game as the cleveland browns lead the raiders 20 to 14 chris barr's missed earlier would peta made that would of course have the raiders do within three now they had to they could kick a field goal and possibly send this game to overtime but as it stands they need a touchdown which if they get with the extra point could give them a one point win an airtight game was projected it was rated just about even coming in it's a double header day on nbc sports the jets and the patriots will be coming up on most of these stations another big game at denver's mile high where the seattle seahawks go against the broncos i'd be looking for marcus allen here he's their big money player we talked earlier trump the cleveland defense not a fancy one because they've got good people they're in position they won't gamble a lot there's a blitz razor through and it's incomplete john rogers almost had the ball on first down rogers making a diving play at the ball a second-year man from ucla intended for marcus allen out of the backfield good coverage by the cleveland browns wilson tries to put this right in between the two defensive players almost picked up by picked off by rogers when you throw it mr rogers neighborhood you're taking a chance afc defensive rookie of the year now second down and ten for the raiders they trail by six with less than two minutes to play penalty marker as the strike is made to todd christensen down to the 28-yard line looks to be just short of a first down we'll see where they spot it i think they got frank minifield lining up offside they'll take the play then second down and ten it looks like the ball is just short of a first down if they go with the play it'll be third down in less than a yard oh they call it against the raiders [Applause] minifield looked like he was lined up offsides trying to really get up there on the receiver's face illegal motion number 85 five yards and second down and that's where frank minifield was minifield was so tight on him jokey got a little antsy there okay we got a full house almost 80 000 here and an area party is left yet we're going down to the final again it looks like 147 to play raiders down by six second and 15. wilson knocks the ball to marcus allen it's incomplete at the 24-yard line now are they realigned let's go to mad rashad at nfl 85. all right don 19 seconds left to go in minnesota tommy kramer looking back trying to find a receiver finds leo lewis a 26-yard touchdown vikings lead 21-14 i thought leo well done [Music] you sure did you cut him real well and that's old the old trapper bud grants got those guys back on track once again watch this play great coverage by banks he's not looking back but there doesn't appear to be any contact on marcus allen before the ball gets there thanks one of the few players who could cover a running back out of the backfield [Applause] right now they only cheers the raiders here from their sidelines the pressure is really on the los angeles waders a team that over the years has thrived on heat right now 141 left to go there are the numbers 20 to 14 cleveland leads the raiders have not scored in the second half and when they put the ball in play the raiders have third down and 15 coming up at the cleveland 42 fans are a big part of this game right now wilson going the line of scrimmage it appears he wants to call a play from the line of scrimmage he can't get the signals out because the fans are so loud they'll start up again as the raiders go to the line of scrimmage once again that reception and good defensive play by chip banks watch right at the end of it is banks interfering the officials say no the raiders set up no nothing but a big play now will carry this team marcus dana the lone setback they flex out the tight end christensen he's to the left [Applause] wilson can't call the signal he's probably going to call a play at the line of scrimmage it's never going to get any better brown's coaches are calling for quiet i'll tell you one thing wilson's milking this a little bit because he is right up underneath the center which is a very wise thing to do yes third the raiders get the first down to the 25-yard line mark wilson under pressure guns a line drive throw in just off the turf dokey williams goes to both knees to take it in a 17-yard gain and the raider drive is alive 120 to play raiders trail by six wilson was in the grass but chip banks he had a hold of one of his feet still got to pass off the raiders the masters that playing beat the clock try to do it again marcus allen takes it inside and he's down to the 13-yard line as the game clock is down to 102 the raiders call timeout they have one left they have to get in the end zone 12 yards on the run by marcus allen the previous play that's a highlight that's a season highlight wilson as hurt as he is the lack of respect he gets chip banks on a blitz from the outside against bruce davis now watch he reaches out he's got his hand on his leg wilson is almost going down still able to get the ball off a big reception for a first down and why wasn't he ruled in the grass wilson 14 of 30 205 yards a touchdown and an interception i think that was a live play i think you have to have a little bit of grasp of that well if you're a cleveland brown fan he was in the grass okay so the raiders tell you you know you have them beat when the gun goes off and you look up with a scoreboard ahead of them that's it not until then that's it [Music] so the raiders now have the ball 13-yard line of cleveland as you see the clock show 62 kicks left eighth play of this drive for the los angeles raiders it's 20-14 cleveland in the lead raiders need a touchdown first down oh nestor had it and hester lost it he was inside hanford dixon no protection in there whatsoever top of the screen you see him beat him right at the line of scrimmage should have been caught should have been caught that was a touchdown all the way but hester could not hold on and so the down goes to two the line of scrimmage just inside the cleveland 14. the raiders break the huddle again the crowd starts up 58 seconds as you see on the clock second down and 10 coming up for los angeles the raiders opened this season with a 31 to nothing blow out of the jets and the raiders were beaten badly their next two times out by kansas city and then the 49ers they've come back to win their last three games you see dokie williams talking to mark wilson look at all those dogs remember at the outset of the day we showed you that play from the playoff game of 1981 when mike davis made the diving interception of brian sipe to stop the browns and the raiders won that playoff game and went on to win the super bowl now the converse of that is what the browns need they need the big play in that open end of the field end zone wilson at his leisure now with the backing of the official waiting for the crowd to quiet down cleveland defense trying to get quiet you have to win if they're not going back to that they're playing rogers right back on the goal line they had one-on-one coverage on hester and he had ann for dixon beat well they got bump and run again dixon at the top midfield at the bottom dokey williams went over and talked to mark wilson so mark wilson who's thrown the ball 30 times today for over 200 yards one touchdown one interception sets his team again if chris parr had not missed that field goal earlier the pressure would not be so heavy on the los angeles raiders to get the ball in the end zone a field goal would tie we'd go to overtime it is conceivable as you know trump that the officials can call a personal file on the stands but they don't leave the building alive if that happens so we won't see one of those there's a lot of talk and this is really doing the los angeles raiders a big favor [Applause] cleveland fans are going to delay this game apparently indefinitely and the officials in their wisdom not calling a foul against the stands you can't call signals of this we might see a flag [Music] they can't throw a flag on the crowd they can't no they cannot throw a flag on the crowd it's never been done i don't know if it's ever been i think it has but in the rules today you can't throw a flag on the crowd we could be here until thursday now there's time to throw things on the field but we'll try again marty schottenheimer trying to keep his people down his backers his dogs in the stands [Applause] the other end zone would be no problem this is where the doghouse is yep now the barnyard chance starts up i think i'd rather have the park we do have a very outstanding devil header game for you say nothing on this outstanding game but nothing's going to happen now the officials send the raiders back into so their seconds still on the clock and still second down and 10 are rising for the los angeles raiders at the 14-yard line of cleveland the raiders failing in the game 20 to 14. a dog he's got his dog bone now the noise levels come down a little bit broken up and for dixon broke up the play the marcus allen and third down arising 52 seconds to play this ball slightly under thrown there's great coverage by the cleveland browns just outstanding coverage dixon just able to get his hand in there at the last second to knock the ball away maybe that marcus allen option pass is a good idea right now oh this is really tough for the raiders trying to call signals as that heavy noise picks up again but in the face of mark wilson but he's gonna go on third ten incomplete inside the five a penalty marker first in five it'll be first and goal from inside the five yard line for the la raiders it looks like they got hanford dixon on the call so the raiders who've seen flags go against them all day finally get one their way and it is a huge one as with 48 seconds left to play he'll have it first and goal actually that's just a five-yard penalty so it's a five-yard penalty but it is a first down the holding call for five yards and a first down and so the ball is now spotted at the nine yard line probably the same play again hester inside hanford dixon contact there the official throws the flag we expected this bump and run by both these football teams all day long so the raiders now with 48 seconds to play have a first and goal inside the 10-yard line would have been intercepted but hanford dixon on the wet turf lost his footing going for the ball as wilson was under pressure so it falls as an incomplete pass and third down second down comes up now for los angeles boy you talk about a gutty call cleveland brown's defense came with a blitz al gross the safety was the strong safety was right in mark wilson's face hale davis has been through a lot of these but this is as tough as any and the same for art model across the other way as he watches his team hold to a six point lead 20-14 43 seconds to play second down and goal for the raiders the eight-yard line of the cleveland browns looks like another blitz is coming it is wilson stands he throws it's shot down and again almost picked off by hanford dixon now third down arises they're trying to beat him in that slant pattern again that the ball was dropped off earlier and now dixon stepped for step with the receiver and he's been knocking him down that time he shouldn't have thrown the ball to hester hester was covered very well by hanford dixon whoa eddie johnson right there underneath timeout now the los angeles raiders mark wilson goes to the sidelines now you got to go to the last place page of the playbook don you really do you've tried just about everything that you can to get the ball in the end zone i look for trickery here big take down that bag of tricks uh the allen option passes one that they have two downs left and they've got to take it in with 39 seconds to play the raiders are down by six chris barr the place ticket for the raiders does have one miss extra point this year extra point looms very large the raiders first have to get in the end zone easy to grow old as an owner on a day like this i'm sure mark wilson is glad these plays are coming from the sideline now what do you do what do you you just flood the do zone with people and try to get it off might go to christensen first the browns are thinking that too probably [Applause] 12th play of the drive coming up all positioned at the eight yard line five-yard penalty for holding against the cleveland browns gave the raiders four new downs but so far they've been unsuccessful in the first two tries at the end zone third down and goal now for the raiders they trailed 20 to 14. [Music] broken up by hanford dixon dokey williams was the man they were going to but hanford dixon has made three consecutive plays now after he was beaten but not burned when the ball was dropped [Applause] cleveland brown start of the day having allowed the fewest touchdowns along with the eagles in the nfl just seven all season long through the first six games they've not allowed the raiders any second half points today los angeles had a 14-7 lead at halftime the browns have outscored the raiders 13-0 over the last two quarters and with 34 seconds left to play it's fourth down and goal for the raiders this is it [Applause] touchdown there's a penalty marker down also they did go to christensen and he gets the ball todd christensen catches the ball off the turf it's a touchdown and also a penalty call on the play the touchdown will go and the greatest team in football is beating the clock the la raiders make it happen with 29 seconds to play a game they were seemingly out of on a defense decline the penalty the touchdown is good 15 yards on a kickoff for throwing a helmet unbelievable but not when it's the raiders christensen won the war of contact there but now it's not over the browns it's tied right now so the extra point has to be good and even if it is there's 29 seconds left for costar to try to get the browns in position [Applause] barge missed one this year so far don chrisma ready to try the point after that will break a 20-20 tie he gets it and the raiders lead with 29 seconds to play another helmet is fired down in the field this time by minifield and another flag is thrown so now they'll kick off from 30 yards farther what a comeback do you realize that the los angeles raiders had eight plays inside the 25 yard line [Music] another flag on frank minnifield what a catch by todd christensen man sitting with al davis as sam berkovitz maybe the all-time raiders fan he's almost ready to come out of the box look at that that ball thrown below christian does a great job with the contact watch once again he looks left waits for christensen he sees the contact stands right in there oh what a catch we'll watch the reaction davis on the left model on the right story of the day in microcosm as davis impassive he's been through this so many times so is art modell but a bitter disappointment but not done yet 29 seconds to play in the game christian christensen does a great job of just bouncing off the man in coverage tight ends are supposed to win that and after five straight incompletions the touchdown pass by mark wilson on the day 14 of 35 213 yards two touchdowns an interception and a last-second victory not yet 29 seconds to go they'll kick it off and the browns will be firing trying to get in field goal range the extra point was all important here this broke a 2020 tie chris barr hitting it knew it was good right away so it is a 21-20 game for but now the penalty call a personal foul call with signaling the raiders are going to kick off from the browns 45-yard line though the browns are going to have to start 80 yards from the raider goal line but they'll be looking to get in field goal position barra's going to nail this right out of the end zone or do you squibb it just let him try to return it as opposed to giving it to him at the 20. well it could happen too far with the cleveland browns unbelievable they expect to do this these guys yeah if i were the cleveland browns i'd try to reverse a pass something you only have 29 seconds left seconds left this has got to be spectacular here whatever they do how many plays can you run past plays in 29 seconds not enough to go that far i don't believe so you got to try to get something on this kickoff return chris barr gets set hits it he knocks it out so it'll carry into the cheap seats one of the dogs makes a play on the ball and the browns come out a bitter disappointment now the browns trailing 21-21 seemingly to have the game one but the raiders as they've done time and again over the years strike late beat the clock take the lead 21-20 and now it's the browns who must come out with just 29 seconds left and make big big plays to get in field goal range if they can kozar certainly made a name for himself in the collegiate ranks of in 29 seconds getting the miami hurricanes down the field in a hurry raiders will rush three he'll defend with eight browns are stacking the deck on the far side three wide receivers to flood over there gosar stands in throws on the run he gets ozzie newson he's out to the 40. cleveland with one timeout remaining remember they used one earlier in the half when kosar didn't like an alignment came over to get some council but they do have one timeout remaining with 20 seconds left to play a 20-yard gain on that play when you run out of timeouts that takes the middle of the field away from you buffalo bills finally win the game 21-9 over the colts the only problem is nobody in buffalo will know it with 22 000 people there that's right 79 000 here today and right now they're waiting to see what's going to happen 20 seconds left to play the ball at the 40-yard line the cleveland browns under the gun i wonder if the cleveland browns have the hook and ladder will pass in that play run by miami a number of years ago you had that game against san diego this would be an excellent time to run the hook and lateral they got to do something sideline they got one timeout left they really can't i don't know if they can use the middle of the field but that's what's open now they use it they'll have to cut another timeout and then they'll be out of them 20 seconds to play well they can't really call a time-out and you can't really aim towards the sideline again the brown stacked the deck this time near side as kosar against the three-man rush stands in fires over the middle is incomplete at the 45-yard line john jefferson claims foul but no flag comes in and with 15 seconds left and one timeout left it's second down now for cleveland the browns trailing 21-20 a double header day on nbc sports will be switching after this immediately to the jets at new england game or to the seattle denver game well we're going to find out how strong bernie kosar's arm is in the next couple of plays he's got to wing it as far as he can get it hope for a flag phenomenal reception by todd christensen on his knees in the end zone brought the raiders back that tie the game then the extra point by chris barr was good and the raiders have a one-point lead he gets out at midfield seven seconds is all that remains uh used a lot of time you gotta give it one shot throw it up as far as you can and of course the game can't end on the penalty on the defense so you get one more chance and that could be the field goal attempt you got to air it out then all the way down ernie's drawing plays on the sideline for a defensive foul yeah he has no timeouts left so bernie kosar the scoreboard says they have one timeout left yeah they do have one left they do have one left career long field goal for matt barr as you see 50 yards been excellent inside the 40. he's kicking off a lot stronger than he used to do so he's got enough to get it there if they get a lot closer than this though where they're aligned right now with a seven yard snap talking about a 77-yard field goal or 67-yard field goal so bernie cosar comes out seven seconds left to play in the game and the ball right at midfield and the raiders in the lead 21 to 20. let's see the raiders and i have two four six seven defensive backs in a linebacker and three defensive lineman to rush crowds need about 30 to 35 yards on a completion or a long penalty flag brigham young connection combining that last score incomplete with four seconds to play tried to loop it out to ozzie newsome over the middle get him down the field and use the one timeout to kick along field goal but it didn't work so now third down arises ball at midfield still with just four seconds left that's one play fourth down comprising now as they flip the down marker so marty schottenheimer in the browns with one last ditch chance and it's a long range one they use their last timeout they want to go over everything they have in the book no question about that this has got to be the hope shot and if they have the hook and lateral with four seconds left now this ball's got to be thrown in the end zone or as close as you possibly can and the only hope you have is a field goal look at that fella he's not particularly happy with what's happened here in the last few minutes of the ball game this place for most of the afternoon was an emotional cauldron upwards of 79 000 cleveland brown fans who'd been pointing to this game has had the browns waiting for the raiders to come to town and then after the browns were behind everybody stayed with him and they fought back to take a 20 to 14 lead but low number six mark wilson on the brigham young connection to todd christensen hit him and with less than a minute to play and the raiders as they've done throughout their history had come back to snatch another game in the closing seconds the browns took over the ball with 29 seconds left to play they've moved it this far out to midfield but now they have just four seconds on the game clock trailing by one and fourth down arises no timeouts left for cleveland so this is it got to go in the end zone yep all they can do is fire it as far as they can too long for a field goal attempt swing pass going out of bounds [Applause] oh they're going to get there they rule it's over they give me that four they were trying to get ready for a long field goal attempt trying to get another playoff inside of four seconds and they couldn't do it and so the raiders extend their win streak to four straight a dramatic come from behind victory los angeles 21 the browns 20 for bob trumpy this is don quickie glad you could be with us
