well it's breaking time in the valley on Magnolia way it's the Augusta National and the master [Music] bring come on son that [Music] singing this too [Music] [Music] amidst the beauty and tranquility of the Augusta National the duel for the green jacket is joined [Music] the gallery is watching Tom Watson gopher and even moments later at the 13th it was Tom Weiskopf for an eagle [Music] [Applause] the drama that we have witnessed here today as the final round of the Masters begins to unfold good afternoon everybody I am Flint Musburger and here earlier today a hard-charging Spaniard by the name of Seve Ballesteros went out and eagled the second hole he took charge of this tournament he recorded a 31 on the front nine that's the lowest front nine of the four days of competition but now suddenly he has encountered trouble he has come up with two bogeys on the back nine this was Seve Ballesteros moments ago at the 12th and so again it is the back nine that can bring it to your knees in the final round of the Masters and again Seve is long with his second shot he has putted magnificent throughout the round he missed [Music] the man who was the youngest Masters champion when this decade began in 1980 playing alongside Tom Watson one the following year having bogeyed the 10th par on the 11th [Music] that his second okay it's three holes on the back nine Craig Stadler the defending champion he has lost one shot today he went in tied with Ray Floyd for the lead he is through 11 holes Ben Crenshaw has picked up four strokes today the aggressive Texan is on the move he is through 17 Tom Watson he came into the day at 4-under he has stayed right there playing eyeball-to-eyeball with Ballesteros Ray Floyd has struggled throughout the final round so far he has slipped to 3-under through 11 Hale Irwin is the clubhouse leader at 2-under through 18 Tom kite is 2-under through 16 he had three consecutive birdies Lanny Wadkins 1-under through 18 Danny pull last year's runner-up he is one under through 17 there at even par Scott Simpson George Archer and Tommy Nakajima now let's go out to the 12th this is the par-3 12th 155 yards Craig Stadler sh t shot just over the back of the green and the short fringe wind conditions today into the players faces from right to left problems here at 12 Scott Simpson earlier a triple bogey 7 as he lost his ball up on the hill player after player having problems here Stadler started the day at six under par it's lost a shot to par as we go to 13 had the T this is Seve Ballesteros leader by three with two bogeys this the final hole of Amen Corner trouble he's flirting with that tributary of raised Creek down the left side that meanders through the azalea's at Ken Venturi it happened to him this way in 1980 well you know Vernon one thing you have to think about is that his length that's the one place he doesn't want to leave it he has a three shot lead and he must keep out to the right and that's not the place you want to be as we go to 12 short pitch for Craig and it got away from him normally the best part of this game but obviously the lie not what he'd like to have and a shot not what he'd like to have minutes ago this was Ramos t-shot here 12 lovely shot one of the best of the day the pen today in the back right the tea today position on the left side are you actually shooting at the water and with the right-to-left win you can't imagine a situation being more difficult for the players to give you some idea how this whole displayed this week it played very easy to first two rounds however the winds and difficult conditions have made this whole anything but an easy par three and let's go to 18 first and right now the hottest man of a day and Crenshaw before under par yeah one thing Pat if he posts birdie here and puts five on the board I like to be sitting there right now with that five and this is a big big shot for Ben Crenshaw hit a absolutely perfect Drive it's about 135 yards to the front of the green the pin is back about 25 yards so he's I would say he's about 160 yards get up that was not what he wanted to do now not a good effort if you have to make birdie Pat just go back to 12 Raymond has not made a single birdie all day three bogeys the rest pars and still no birdies Kenny it's hard to imagine this player not making any birdies through 12 holes it is for me because he looked like the man that may have to be but of course you look at all the lengths of these players of speaking about length let's go to 13 that the long hitter Ballesteros well Ken it wasn't a long shot this time because he pulled it left and he's on the left side Ray Floyd made his par by the way at 12 and this is his second shot I would think 95% of the players today have had an opportunity to come to the green in two and have done so but biased arrows obviously has no chance at that what are his particular problems here kenny 1sq - back in the play - he can't make mistakes like this he can't come back to the field he has to make them come after him that's not the place to put it he's lucky he has a shot and he might wind up making 5 after all and there's a look at the remainder of his task here at 13 11 mid iron shot to the green and let's go back to 12 Stadler with a very difficult 7 footer for par he knew it when he missed it he'd love to have it back bogey the Statler drops back to fall under Kenny I see all the players unraveling a bit here is they they play the back nine well with Ballesteros put it in the play at 13 as we are at 13 now Vern and that was Jodie Mudd who's had a bad day Ken he's seven over par now and that was for his birdie this for par go ahead with your thought is that no one's made a move on him Ballesteros birdied one Eagle two and birdied four which is a big jump out but then nobody put a push on him until Watson made Eagle at eight and then he went bogey at 9 and then he bogeyed the 10 and bogey at 11 but so the thing he's doing is Ballesteros is not no keeping it together but no one's catching him this is Keith Fergus and this is a par putt he found the creek in front of the green pitched on to within four feet Keith who started the day at -3 is now at +1 not this week another example of how you've got to get it right in the heart of the hole to make the putt and you see where the pin is cut today here for the final round in the right hand side midway back that's rather large green that measures some 45 yards from front to back and back in the fairway Tom Watson who is in perfect position to take a rip at the pin but Tom really can is a strange example of golf because he had the Eagle to pull with him - and then bogey bogey bogey as he made the turn well the biggest fault is his biggest part of his game as he was bold and he was bold at 9:00 and he knotted by about six feet but you can bet one thing the pin may be in a tough spot but he's been a rifled right at it if he can he had an eagle opportunity from 6 feet back here on Thursday in the first round that went awry probably a 4 would and I would guess somewhere in the vicinity of 205 yards with the hanging lie he's got to even move it left to right he can't leave it out to the right and he started it out to the right better move coming back in and going left he's in the heart of the green with about 45 people that's about the same distance and now watch it start to roll [Applause] it shows you the speed of the green turn the chem that made a 45-foot eagle opportunity perhaps 30 now Ballesteros with his third shot here's one thing he's got to keep in mind pin or no pin score or no score he has to make sure he puts it in the middle of the green and makes 5 but watch it makes 4 fine but now if he puts it down in the water he's in in 3 back and forth could make 7 he's thinking now I wouldn't fool with the pin now I would fool for center of the green take my 5 and go quietly to 14 looks like it might be a 6-iron Seve Ballesteros leader by 4 at the current time this his third shot well gusty winds coming up desi buy his pant legs it's blowing back and forth and this is the problem which you find at 11 12 and 13 all the time and as it was yesterday here on the green can there's absolutely no indication of wind whatsoever that's got the big going left I would think a little bit Oh and that wind brought it back a little bit what a courageous shot but not the place that you know it's a great shot but he's still fooling well he's only a what five six feet from the water and he'd have so well he's he's no more than two feet from the from the rough grass he flirted with danger but came out fortunate let's go to 18 his moments ago Ben Crenshaw who as we told you earlier is for under par this is for birdie as you would expect a fine plant we go back to 13 and on the tee Raymond Floyd Steve Melnyk told you he's had three bogeys and no birdies today well he asked for it not to turn right and it obeyed let's go back to 18 fine round and fine par for Fenton shot playing the damn hole - for posted back to 13 and on the tee Craig Stadler defending champion he wet right and maybe too far right to have a chance to go at the green so Seve Ballesteros walks onto the green here at 13 currently enjoying a four shot lead in the final round of the Masters [Music] still a long way to go and this the final round of the Masters Patinkin just told you about that splendid round by Ben Crenshaw in its 69 today Hale Irwin and Jack Renner is in at 70 and right now let's go back to the 18th and Patinkin and another man having a fine day this is moments ago Tom Kyte second shot it seems like he's always there Pat look at this shot brilliant started the day had one under got it to three lost Toby birdied 17 as we go to 13th and the Eagle part of Tom Watson he does go into sales possession at second place but that is not what he had hoped for he was 15 but a lot of golf left for Tom Watson's Seve Ballesteros and the rest now Ballesteros after that outstanding third shot as perhaps 12 feet for birdie when Ken I'll tell you the the bogey possibilities were enormous when he was in the trees to the left well you know to win you have to play well but you have to get good breaks think about the shot he hit at 12 against the bank that Simpson losses ball he rolled back down but he made bogey to hit it in the woods at 13 you don't even have to have a swing but he had a swing and a shot and now has a chance to make four so it's not only good play but some good breaks today two uphill putt for birdie for Seve Ballesteros been right yes burned I think you had a thought on city boy well I was just gonna say that that's been his game all through his life when he first started on the European tour he was only a teenager and he was always in the woods and that's his game it's the strength of his game I know he's got to have luck but he's won major titles from car parks etc well he escapes with a a par 5 for 13 makes 214 still with a three-shot lead over Tom Watson his playing partner meanwhile back in the fairway the enormous gallery surrounding this 13th fairway and Craig Stadler and let's go back at 80 Hal Sutton moments ago finishes plus four and Tom kite to go - for tie Ben Crenshaw for the lead among those who completed play John kites had some pretty good holes on the back nine through this to this tremon pad he birdied 10 11 12 one day and then today he started at 1-under got to 202 went back to even through the turn then he birdied 12 13 and 14 bogeyed 16 birdied 17 this is for birdie at 18 to get to 4-under and a round of 69 he has had a phenomenal record here sir he does it week after week afternoon for under what a grand finish back to 13 Craig Stadler starts that right Kenny I think he missed hitting no he was laying up he had no chance and he played the smart shot as we go to 14 and on the tee at the par-4 400 five-yard 14th save you biased arrows what you'd have to like this hole it's a right-to-left dogleg plays a predominant hook and also say like very long and the second shot of Ray Floyd who is five behind Seve Ballesteros in perfect position best shot of the day we've seen here on the second shot was that of Ben Crenshaw he put a forward five feet from the pen and sank the putt for an eagle can I think many thought that Raymond whose acknowledged as a great player when he's in front leading a tournament might play a little better than he has today well the golf course has taken a different face last couple of days as the wind has changed around it's not hasn't been the same the greens have speeded up some now but Raymond is always there to be contended with and I think what he has to do here burn it to get back in the in the heat of it he has to make a three here and that's no easy chore looks like you hooked that ball yeah he sure did escapes the bunker and he's pin-high but some 85 90 feet away from the pen so Ray Floyd and Craig Stadler are final twosome of the day stroll down the fairway at 1370 Ellis Terrace is playing the 14th hole he's got a free shot lead over Tom Watson in the final round of the Masters Seve Ballesteros out there on the 14th fairway will go out to that and see how he does remember he's eyeball to eyeball against Tom Watson here this afternoon amateurs such an important part of the Masters tradition James Hallett the former hockey goaltender from Bryant college in Rhode Island he shot a 78 for 297 total he had fine four rounds of golf let's now go out to the 13th grab the third shot of Craig Stadler 75 yards short of him now let's go to 14 seve has put the ball in ideal situation off the tee where he can play right toward this flag that's cut to the far right on a small shelf today 9-iron for seve 135 yards he'll take it in half and left to right when left to right in helping and he took it in well left it's coming down the slope a very tricky putt from there interesting pairing now with Watson playing with biased arrows Tom with a chance to make a birdie playing with seve put the heat on him but he has his problems here in the right rough unobstructed shot but very difficult to get it close I don't think he likes it hit it heavy it's come up well short to the base of a small mound he's proximately 20 yards from the pen and has his work cut out to save par tom has really frittered away some shots but three-putt bogey at 9 and 11 poor drive on 10 led to another bogey and let's go back to 13 and in this gorgeous setting ray Floyd surveying an eagle opportunity you will have a chance to see just how slick these greens have once again become since we had sunshine the last couple of days and this is almost all downhill didn't realize this Ken but Ray's wife Maria has been hill for a couple of weeks I saw her out here today she's following Raymond and vital lady she helped him a lot I'll tell you what when you think many years ago and I play with Raymond how far he's come and his handle success and his way of golf very well and I'm very proud of him and he's truly a great champion at the age of 38 and 39 had two of his better years and now at 40 in contention for a second master's championship he won here of course in 1976 with the record Terry 271 this for Eagle well he will not be happy with that let's go to 14 I can't imagine a more difficult pitch than its Tom Watson faces right here it's gone with the sandwich and there you see it obviously not what he had mine Tom tried to pitch the ball at the top of the shelf trickle it down toward the pen but Kenny I'd have to question his choice of shots right there well he wants to get it up on the hill and the course you look at that shot in the last thing you'd think about is don't leave it shortened that's the time you hit it hard and he had to miss it as long as not one of his better efforts that's for sure there was a shot where he actually had the choice of probably three shots to play it's probably them one of the most difficult I would think this and five and it would be the most difficult greens to maneuver around when you're close into the pen now suddenly he's trying to save bogey tough chip as it goes back up the hill will break hearts and white the left and pick up pace as it goes by the pin as you see there and let's go back to 13 Craig Stadler for birdie not that much has gone well for him in the back nine but really with Ben Crenshaw and Tom kite having posted those four Watson and Statler the only two with the seeming chance to make a run at Ballesteros Kim well that's for sure that like Raymond now is no he's at the point of no return he has this for birdie to go to 4-under and misses this he stays at three and five shots back it's slipping away very fast now Vern gray had back-to-back bogeys at five and six in the front nine and then bogey number 10 and let's go back to 14 Seve is faced with a deceptively difficult putt he comes up and over a crown in front of his ball about eight feet and then as you saw Tom's ball picks up pace as it moves down toward the hole they move right to left only Tom kite has made this putt all day there you have some idea of the speed of that cut and I don't think he's displeased it greens today cut it seven sixty fourths of an inch they're very fast but they're very fair Parker seve he remains 8-under now Watson has no gimme four five must make this as we go for 216 Nakajima at least 16th the hole playing today a hundred and seventy-five yards and that's a 5-iron okajima won over park as he finds the bunker on the right and leaves himself a very tricky shot that once passed today 40 a tough putt for Tom but a good putt for Tom he can give it a firm wrap he's going right back up the hill it's a left-center putt murmur this for bogey 5 incredible double-bogey for Tom and with it his chances of winning probably hard to imagine by esteros Sunday with a four shot lead over Crenshaw kite and Stadler as a tournament is his to win [Music] mostly brutal drive of Seve Ballesteros to the top of the hill where he will have to decide whether or not to go for the carry over the pond you've really let that one out Tom Watson certain to do the same into the teeth of this Westley barely stopped in way past the crowd and there is some rough and muddy ground there since the deluge to the 18th Johnny Miller this is for birdie lower plateau to the upper plateau Miller made an early run - I really felt with his length and his ability in his record and everything I thought he really was gonna do well this week he had a 3-under at one time today I was going back you know there's a lot more at stake here than you know of course winning is one thing with the top 24 and ties returned next year and they look forward to that - it's a comfortable feeling young man that coming up to putt now Pat's got Simpson that really what went from dumb from 500 to zero as we go to 16 and Gil Mogens birdie attempt he's 1-under par but he'll be satisfied with but it's a difficult one a large brow to go up flattening at the top there's been a lot of three putts on this green and very few birdies in fact only three so far this afternoon are then for Gil Morgan who remains one under with two holes to play [Music] to the 15 that's Keith Fergus cutting for birdie which will bring him back from two to one over par having started the day at 3-under now back to the 16th and Nakajima who's won over par with a very difficult little bunker shot just needs to flop it out it's very fast what a marvelous shot and even then it's done some four feet by let's go back to the 14th Raymond Floyd first apply here at 14 Raymond has to hit it close as to Statler with whom he's playing have any chance of catching Ballesteros a turn and he takes it in half lovely golf shot chance for layman to make his first birdie of the day Stadler must like this pins - Craig plays that left-to-right shot and it's suited for him so we go to 16 Nakajima this putt for a par our safety captain has been cutting well we can in fact had one streak of five consecutive birdies back to the 49 Aaron four gray safely on but Mike seve is a very difficult putt from there for birdie and let's go forward to 15 where Seve Ballesteros has gone to reason and he's laying up very wise move I fancy since he had the best part of 240 yards to the hole but of course the ball can be very easily dunked in the water from where he is right now it is anything but over but they say that you have to play the par 5s here outstandingly well to win and Ellis Terrace comes in here at 10-under par for the par fives playing his 16th Watson way left had no opportunity to go for it either and as virtually equidistant from the hole with Ballesteros this if he can confirm it is his 30th victory Pacific Ballesteros will go to the 60 Keith Fergus I guess who's won over started the day 3-under so dropped to today the pin today back right very much where it was on the last day last year sitting on a little shelf and a deceptive shot there's a lot of green to go over many of the players have left it short the women swirls considerably on this hole and does make clubbing very difficult it left of the pen but he's going to be on the green that's the punishment for going left you go running all the way to the bottom of this green and leave yourself a long uphill cut with a very difficult brow to negotiate Arnold Palmer was the only person to make a birdie on this hole yesterday today Nicolette Irwin and Sutton have made birdies murder is having a wretched day and in fact has scored nine straight bogeys misses the green on the right and leaves himself a very difficult and fast chip coming down the hill let's go back watch the action on the 14th well Craig and his caddie surveying what is a tough tough putt ordinarily to worry about three putting but in position he's in that's the last thing on his mind he's got to make birdies to catch seve the pace so important turn hard from right to left at the end and a very weak effort very weak effort now let's go forward to 15 Ballesteros has chosen his weapon and into the wind plays that little wedge shot he certainly wasn't fooling with the water eminently safe I think in the old days he might have had a dash at it and tried to carry the water but he's learned reason a tender age of 26 now Tom what that's way past the whole tool and I think you could almost say that the opponents have thrown in the towel and if Cepheus could beat himself he might have done it here for the 40 Raymond would with a 12-footer bothered by the wind balance is a key when it's windy like this to keep the steady stroke it's got to make some birdies remember he's not made a birdie today and if there was an easy putt on this grain he has it right here not a good effort either from Raymond remains three in the park five strokes back up steady with only four holes to play obviously disappointing you have to wonder Ken Venturi weather Ballesteros has started berdyev one in England to may have just suddenly thrust these guys into playing for second well he made the move because of his length making birdie at 1 but he willing to which he not did on the green but another thing he was a man with that length and strength he was a tough man to catch and everybody's falling down I mean no one's even made a move on him since about the 9th hole if that putting strokes an indication like Craig's play today it's no wonder he's 3 of a par firs around a very careless bogey for Craig Stadler as he moves to 15 and let's go forward to the 15th great care an inspection here by Seve Ballesteros this is a deceptive putt it's very very fast down the slope but it's a left-to-right slider and then it tends to straighten up in the last yard but it's very possible if you just overdo it to hit it very nearly back into the water this for an eagle which would put him if he made it 12-under par for the par 5 he will have a sizeable putt coming back for his birdie but when you think that he's 8-under par at the moment and yet he's 10-under for the par-5 so that's where he's done the damage as Ken Venturi was saying with an immense length Tom Watson studying his putt which is a similar one left-to-right break and it comes very fast to the right at the finish this for a birdie the sands of time have run out and of course it's very nice for seve to be playing with Watson and see him failing with monotonous regularity we make any kind of a move we were talking about that start of birdie Eagle but of course birding Li par-3 the fourth hole was a tremendous feat Kenny no doubt about that been that that hole has proven over the years to be one of the toughest par pars to make on the golf course and of course birding nine similarly sure Ballesteros still have this for par he he can't afford to make bogey here Ben that's true not with that stroke her sir Seve Ballesteros starts they line up her walk to triumph a nice four-stroke cushion over two gentlemen who already finished the Texans Ben Crenshaw and Tom kite [Music] I think everyone is a little bit stunned at what has happened but the man next to me who tried to put a move on the Spaniard Ben Crenshaw with that sensational 68 how many birdies did you think you needed today to really make a move and win this tournament Ben I figured I had to shoot 66 on a windy day let's go back out to sixty now for their drives Ben and will come back Savi's teed it over on the left the tee to give himself the widest possible shot to this green the last of the water holes I'll just half a cup short that was safe there's a large bundle waiting behind metal pin only seven seven yards away and it's a very difficult shot if you come out of there remember Craig Stadler last year really struggled to make a four on this hole and well if I would have lost him the title Tom Watson at 3-under 175 yards to go [Music] that's right on the pen was a good most of the players here hitting five Ann's today but many of the longer it has been using a six let's go back to Brent Musburger in a studio live thank you then why are all these marvelous masters champions being brought to their knees while Ballesteros spurts first of all I think Ballesteros we all must understand has an absolutely unbelievable imagination for playing shots he was born playing the game he he was born with a 3-iron and a putter in his hand and he can invent shots he's never in trouble and he the way he sets up and the way he walks and everything he's a golfer through through he's very exciting man he was absolutely magnificent on the 13th that may go down as the turning point he saved par down there here is Craig Stadler let's go back to the course was the second shot of Craig Scotland laying up as has Ray Floyd also and let's go to the 18th this is earlier George Archer Masters champion right at it and now for the birdie one stroke pickin anybody besides Crenshaw's I might take this man too if there's one of only three birdies today back to 16 I believe it was Horton Smith who said Augusta presents two games on every hole a game for reaching the greens and another for figuring the ever challenging contours after reaching him and I think Tom Watson down there knows exactly what he means in fact Tom really let it go at the 9th having made a marvelous eagle at the 8th wrapped in a very long putt and then three putted 9 10 and 11 in fact it was noticeable there that seve also eased up a little bit I don't know whether it was the large lead or perhaps the fact that Watson who was challenging him at that point was starting to go on the greens but seve started to play a little more conservatively he missed the green at the 10th in fact played very conservatively at the 11th out to the right and didn't really attack the pin and then 12 he seemed to aim for the center of the green and pulled it left not really SEVIS game but you know seems to have got things very well under control a four shot lead this is the last hole over water so 17 doesn't present any serious treble and there was the wood and bunkers at the 18th but he really should have it sewn up by this stage Oh Watson with a very long twisting putt on this 16th green was a break of at least eight or nine feet here from the right side and he's going up the hill [Applause] back to Brent Musburger all right Clive now joining me Tom Kyte of course he was a teammate at Texas along with Ben Crenshaw they once shared the NCAA championship and they wind up the tournament identical totals 280 for Tom and Ballesteros went out and went Eagle birdie immediately now did the other players perhaps try too hard Watson paired with him and right behind him Floyd and Statler did they try to turn it on too quickly Brett I would think so certainly when you get off when you see a player of Ballesteros ability get off to that fastest start you know you've got to make something happen because the odds of him coming back has been said he's such a great player and he's got such an imagination for the game he never is in trouble even though he looks like he's in trouble and practically ever home he is so courageous as he's demonstrated again for those of you who've just joined us when he made the turn at 31 he immediately bogeyed two of the first three holes Ben but now let's go back out to the course and a very safe from Ballesteros is 8-under with a four shot lead not that this has been his best hole though he's had a four a three or four and this is going to be another par three Tom Watson course does not remember this hole with great favor he had a six here on the first round last year which virtually cost him the title Stadler made a 2 in the first round a four shot swing far then for Tom Watson that's for pars on this hole for Tom [Applause] and a beautiful hole it is the stroke average though has been almost 3.2 back to the 15th and this is Ray Floyd on videotape playing by his standards a very ordinary stroke over the green at 15 and Craig Stadler shortly afterwards could only laugh disconsolate Lee in a sense it's virtually all over for these two and of course the two young lads in the studio at the moment have a lock on second place and these are great birdie opportunities that have been squandered by Floyd and Stanley 217 and of the T hear of the pine shaded 17th our leader seve biased arrows 400 yard par-4 straightaway most of it uphill came off of bogey yesterday at 16 and thundered out the loudest and longest drive of the day and that will play very nicely right center portion of the fairway ideally you'd want it left center with the pin placement today the horrid is the bunker is gonna come into play regardless now here's Tom Watson up-and-down round three birdies three bogeys an eagle and a double bogey and he is 1 over round today well you really hooked that left and that will be over in the adjoining fairway which is the 7th fairway so Watson continues to have his problems he indicated to us earlier this week that he wasn't particularly happy with his game and it's showing him the 15 marvelous view of the problems that confront Ray Floyd as he plays his fourth shot and really rather inconsequential and just a few moments ago Statler's which caused a quiet explosion down below from this very volatile character so both men have only par putts and very difficult ones indeed down and across the slope so Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kyte must be watching with more than little interest instead of well he had it Eddie just given it a little touch more so he drops back to 2-under par and Seve Ballesteros strides up the hill to 17th with a four-stroke cushion over the two players who have finished Ben Crenshaw and Tom kite was in in on his second master's title and the two men four strokes behind a Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kyte you both say the course is playing tougher today than yesterday Ben in Tom why I thought it did I thought they used a lot of their very difficult pin placements today I thought the wind blew a little bit harder today - I thought it shifted to more I agree the wind not only was it blowing hard but it's blowing from a direction that makes the par 5 so long and so difficult that there's almost no chance for for even the long hitters to get to the green into Benna Tom thank you very much congratulations on a great tournament out to 17 and frankly there's Ballesteros second shot directly over the bunker and that pin is cut just 12 feet back our traditional final round placement he's on the putting surface 20 feet to the left but obviously in good shape to make par here then we won this tournament in 1980 will never forget the shot he hit on Saturday off the tee which landed on the 7th green he dropped it hit it over the scoreboard and made birdie here on 17 back to 15 quite a few moments ago this was his putt to save par remember it turn sideways to the right of the finish and obliges and so ray Floyd goes to the last two holes at 3-under par we take him to 60 and Roman just having a debate on exactly what club it might be not breeze there is is against on this hole that it's really dropped quite considerably now as the afternoons gone on huge shadows from the pines sprawling across this green making cutting just that little bit more difficult and Raymond Floyd with a 6-iron [Music] just four or five yards short and how many times have we seen that this week the pin all week long has been along the right side or the right half of this green up on the high spots and anything left of the pin just spins away right down the slope down towards Lake instead Levin who's dropped four shots today it's played this hole so far with three pars and this is a six am [Music] lovely shot cutting back to the pin let's go forward to the 17th and biased arrows looking over his putz arts gallery surrounding the 17th green year town once it hit a fine second shot from over in the direction of the adjoining 7th fairway put it on the fringe of the grain about 15 feet away but nice Terrace looking at about 20 feet or so for birdie but he won this tournament in 1980 he virtually lapped the field in the first three rounds shot 66 69 at 68 had a seven-shot lead and had a few shaky moments on Sunday as he did today but eventually won by four shots 31 he shot on the front nine today just 1 off the front nine record set by Johnny Miller a 30 in 1977 this for birdie at the par-4 17th very nicely done a couple of inches left anti esteros remains at 8-under par with a four shot cushion over Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kyte who have already completed play there's the only other foreigner to win a green coat is Gary Player who has three and seve of course working on his second Tom Watson this is for birdie off the fringe Kansas City where this man lives they call him the fourth franchise to go along with the three professional teams just isn't Tom's day and you'll have that left to stay at 3-under par for the tournament not nearly enough at least in this particular day just be the third time that he's part this whole in four days and Watson and Ballesteros who take the short walk to the finishing hole 2:18 Tomi Nakajima good tournament for him finishes one very impressed by him again boy he had some streaks in there five birdies in a row three birdies in a row he made him in groups and very strong player he's undoubtedly I guess the longest hitter in Japan and one of the best players you're gonna hear more of him Pat right there you get a pretty good look at the 18th hole the gallery starts to move up and we'll line this fairway 18 is a par for 405 yards that bends around to the right uphill the bunkers on the left side of the fairway woods as you can see down the right side we go back to 16 and Raymond Floyd with a long birdie putt well he's left himself a three and a half footer and that one's going to be vital he's 3-under par at the moment in fourth position Crenshaw and kite already in the clubhouse at 4-under so let's go through to 18 Keith Fergus up the hill second shot back honey get up some more ball and it caught the bunker right pat did not come in from right to left and pin it getting way back up there is a longer shot you think Ballesteros must be certainly very aware of the situation it would be very hard for the championship take it away from him now that's moving it to the right Oh hit somebody we went back a little bit but it was a good break it might have going in the trees but with four shots and with his ability I think as long as he stays on his feet he's gonna be alright bounced back in the fairway so he's not in bad shape Watson now Oh right through the trees good break right out in the fairway pet so they both got a good break both going right and coming back into the fairway Ballesteros by four over Crenshaw and Watson and Floyd at minus three and Statler at minus 2 the rest of the scores a fine day for Hale Irwin and - to Watkins Pole Morgan - one and Scott Simpson even par two days ago Seve Ballesteros celebrated his 26th birthday he is about to take one of the grandest marches in all of sport up that beautiful tree-lined fairway on the 18th he will cap his second master's championship a tournament that he went out early today and grabbed by the throat going evil birdie on the second and third holes other Masters champions have fallen by the wayside all afternoon but not the noble Spaniard Ray Floyd was one of the co-leaders he's prepared at 17 out - frankly Bert Raymond three over par for his round today and obviously very disappointed the way things have been going yet another par at 16 starch that will down the right side but coming back nicely center of the fairway this at 16 a few moments ago Raven nailed down yet another car and a bit earlier for birdie Craig Stadler and he also lond up with a par and that Statler's tee shot on its way here at the par-4 17th down the left side and scatters a few gallery and with the direction of that large tree between the 7th 17th fairways meanwhile back at 18 Keith Fergus has had to wait while Jody mud I've had some problems with where to hit from here's Keith out of the bunker earlier tough day for Jody mud it has been departing at the 7th he made eight consecutive bogeys to go to 9 over a day from 4 under to 9 over it has to be one long day for him with Augusta National he turned pro last year the night after the final round of the Masters comes from nearby and has a lot of supporters in the gallery and a more tough day for Keith Fergus to last year when Jody Mudd was playing so well I thought he might have been come one of the first amateurs to win the Masters and Ballesteros and Watson waiting out in the fairway while Jody mud gets prepared to the putt path you know I've played in and also have seen a multitude tournaments but I can't remember where three players of the caliber of Statler Florida and Watson have played as puli collectively and not made any move at all is Jody mine it's been one of those days it's not over yet it's a golf course that I think once you get going well you can keep going and once it gets going bad it's hard to gather it all together but now for bogey to finish ten over for the tournament and very disappointing round for him I'm sure furgus now for par reminder began to stick with us after the round is completed the chairman of the Masters Tournament committee board Hardin will be in the studio to make the presentation of that coveted green jacket Fergus started 300 losses momentum at 6 & 7 he went bogey-bogey and then from then on it was downhill for me and finishes at +2 after starting out at 3-under so it's a long day sometimes here at Augusta National when you're trying for that green coat and so discipline it because there is nothing like victory here and second place is course looks like Crenshaw and kite will finish second and they just came right out of the blue wall stairway right in here and sitting in the clubhouse watching the winner looks like come up 18 pet Ballesteros is just about ready now and he's raking the bunker and whoops there to get the sand off the grass another caddy holding the pin until it's ready done and he places it in Ballesteros now we'll prepare to it is shot somewhere about a hundred and seventy-five yards takes it high left to right and look out ere bailing the whole world read back by the scorer's temple where they passed the ground he's anxious to sign his card but that's the privilege you can have when you're leading by four shots coming to the 18th hole and trying to get it up he hit a little bit of a flower Pat let's go back to 17 where Raymond Floyd is about to hit his second shot 7 or 8-iron distance away then cut directly behind that bunker it's pard this hole three straight days and Raymond still looking for his first birdie of the day look at this just a fine shot it took a long long while the granite part is finally looking at a birdie back to 18 and the walk up the hill that has been so much discussed Severiano Ballesteros just listen this the applause starts to swell as he comes up earlier here's time Watson Matt we've got two players in the clubhouse French showing tight at 4-under Floyd with a birdie at 17 and watching with a possible birdie here at 18 and here is Ballesteros and I'll watch them ballesteros has some work yet to do well he's the one thing he's gonna have to watch let's get that smiling person out of his way one person he's gonna have to watch is I don't believe he's gonna hit this very hard pat well he doesn't want to go down the hill it's one of those things you could go down a hill and make six it's not gonna be a big thing for them that with a four shot lead but we could have if Watson makes we could have a four-way tie for second with the Floyd still to play 18 and Floyd very very close at 17 Ballesteros up for a look and as Ken Venturi just mentioned you don't want to go too far past that pin it'll just pick up speed his thought Pat coming to 18 with the bunker in the front of the green and right he wanted to get to the top shelf he didn't want to leave it in the bunk of course and in the adrenaline-pumping he had a little more and he wanted to and it kind of took off on him but if he's going to miss it not quite that far back he would like to have been on top shelf and behind the hole she had the wind at his back and a pretty pretty substantial wind event it's a good look at what he has he has to bump this he'll hit it short of the green who bounced it down try to run it off the fringe and run it down because once it hits the green it'll be very fast now it's gonna well he guarded against it too much that's his thought again his mind not too down the hill but you know that's the time when you enjoy a four shot lead I'll say let's go back to 17 just in time for Craig Statler's birdie try from about ten feet away in a great trouble shot out of the wooded area but he'll have to settle for par as we go back to 18 and again the same philosophy with occupy Palace Terrace mine don't want it too hard now I would think a little differently of course every player plays differently Pat I would think from this position with now a he's looking at bogey a three shot lead i I would think that maybe a putter would be good choice because he just wants to he doesn't want to make it he just wants to guide it down as close as he can he's doesn't have the putter no he's chipping that I guess it was meant for him to be the champion going very slow Pam he might have gone down that slope that Balkan very but it hit the pin we went in it was meant to be we'll get a look at that again probably Pratt in will see that that ball was not going very slow that was I meant by chipping it and to guide it down with a putter but now after quieting down Watson a big putt for him Watson is minus three this play would put him -4 and tied with Crenshaw on kite this is the difference of finishing fourth or tied for second and one of those days for Watson it just seems everything is going according to the way the day began Watson made that Eagle at 8:00 got to 7-under it looked like he was really gonna make a run at Ballesteros two more yet to play stabbing Floyd as always the tremendous galleries so very courteous here the customer Ballesteros through now at minus eight [Music] congratulations to that noble Spaniard Seve Ballesteros who today in Augusta Georgia won his second master's championship Ray Floyd was tied for the lead coming into this final round yet he and co-leader Craig Stadler struggled all afternoon this was ready for a birdie moments ago at 17 it was his first birdie it was that kind of a day for everyone except Ballesteros and Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kyte now let's go back to Pat at 18 while we wait for Stadler and Floyd to play a team let's check some of the other finishing scores a windy day today when the wind was I suppose the most significant factor Kenny there's no doubt it was an Amen Corner pattern here some of the scores hokey at +3 Archer +1 Ballesteros the champion -8 foody couples the fine 68 by Ben Crenshaw Keith Fergus plus 2 as you look at the rest of them the ammeter aims Hallett low amateur Hale Irwin a fine tournament - to the old Morgan who was very much in the thick of things at one time finished - 1 Peter Oosterhouse +4 Dan Pole a good tournament every lost in a playoff last year - Stadler finished at -1 Lanny Wadkins - 1 and Tom Watson through now at -3 let's go now back to Ben Britt Musburger all right Pat what a glorious event the Masters is this is an event that says springtime and it attracts worldwide attention Thursdays traditional opener 81 year old Gene Sarazen teed off first along with our own Ken Venturi and a new tradition began with George archers daughter Elizabeth became the first woman caddy but the day belonged to this man he woke up the echoes Arnold Palmer with a spectacular 68 the crowd surged with him but Friday was a day of waiting a driving rainstorm prevented any play [Music] that forced even the international media to scramble for the rainy-day interview hi Donna got the disc arm up at the head on ie so you go to a monument Vicky night on Saturday carefree lee trevino and plenty of golf action despite the less than perfect conditions great golfers such as Tom kite demonstrated why they are playing and we are watching [Music] but the day had a damper put on her by Jack Nicklaus he was forced to withdraw because of a muscle spasm in the back then on Sunday the Augusta National came out in all its splendid glory it was a Bobby Jones had in mind when he designed this great course there was subtle danger however in the wind still Arnold Palmer would surge finishing with an ego disastrous seven bogeys for the day Ray Floyd grabbed the share of the lead with a magnificent tee shot like this at number 12 and second round leader Gil Morgan is willing to wade in the water [Applause] and this 47th masters will be remembered as the last one for Sam Snead he says he's trading in his clubs for a fishing pole after 44 years here at Augusta and three Masters Championships and number 47 belong to the noble Spaniard Severino biased arrows running in this par putt at 18 destroyed the field Seve Ballesteros will be back to get the green jacket award Hardin in just a moment when we continue on CBS marvelous tradition and here to present the green jacket to the winner the chairman of this tournament order hard thank you very much Brent and congratulations on a job well done fellas we've got much time today because of the this is Monday and that we're running short I do want to say congratulations to you Jim I hope that you feel that that getting in here early made the difference for you say it sure did and paid off what do you expect to do you're going to be a professional or not I'd like to be in my future but right now let's just play amateur golf for a year take it from there congratulations again seven the last time you and I were here they told us we were gonna have to talk for 22 minutes and you didn't speak much English and I was frozen now now you can talk English and we haven't got much time congratulations oh it's great to have you a second winner thank you thank you very much what how do you feel about it coming over here and the best team to win the Masters you will be here forever as long as you were still alive so that's the best thing and very happy how did you feel when that shot on 12 sailed up into the brush up there and might get lost yeah well I remember when I won the knighting 80 I hide my 602 right and was in the water and say this time you have to hit left and I hit a little bit too much and the ball was over the game but I was very fortunate to get ball back and make it good for and go direction wonderful seve I want to put the jacket on you Craig's usually would do this but he's still out there on the course finishing up congratulations to you thanks very much thank you
