everyone Jame what a game we're going to have Washington and Dallas you know you really picked a fine game to take me you promised me at the beginning of season I'll take you to a football game here we are got you out of the studio in New York and you could not have picked a better one you know we wanted to bring along a very special guest for this Thanksgiving today folks and he's someone that you all remember you've watched him so often from the sidelines there he is finger looking good we thought that was very appropriate for your Thanksgiving afternoon turkey the former coach of the Washington Redskins George Allen George what kind of memories do you have when you walk back inside Texas stadium well this is the first time I've ever been welcomed here it's unusual it must have been something when you brought the Redskins in here for some of those showdowns well this was always a tremendous rivalry it was a championship game no matter when we played Dallas whether it was early in the season or late in the season Cowboys ever try to pull any tricks on the the Redskins George no not not anything that we didn't try to pull on them you never loaded that metal up in mly shoe like Tex no we won't get into that Jeffy the Greek what about today's game a lot of folks think it's going to be a blowout for the Cowboys well dorett will break a 100 and I'm afraid that the Dallas Cowboys will outdo the Redskins we'll get back into that in more detail but IR you had an opportunity earlier this week to visit one of my favorite spots the Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio gr I tell you it was a pleasure too because when you go back there course you sit there and you see all the oldtimers and people who really made pro football what it is today and they're there because a new expansion program had been developed there and 3 days ago the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened a new Wing that marked the conclusion of a million dooll Expansion Project new features include the history of blacks in pro football a display of Super Bowl championship rings from Games 1 through 12 and the evolution of the uniform some beautiful Rings this coming Sunday you'll see a show hospital in Washington and uh we wish he was here I doubt if Dallas does it's good to see George Allen here though yeah GW should be here for this one you know I was talking to some of the red assistants just a minute ago they feel uh in order to win they're going to have to throw just about every play and I think that's where they're going to start it I think that Dallas against the Green Bay Packers the game that we did was the best pro football team in action I'd ever seen that day people have been saying uh particularly earlier in the year that Dallas has been stumbling around that they uh they were sort of complacent about things what do you think now they look pretty tough don't I think you better get to them early and get some points and then hang on cuz in the in the last half they're really a tough football team we saw Miami do that that's right and Minnesota did that we look forward to it Brent you got it okay thanks Pat and Tommy and uh earlier this week Jane went uh George Allen you've done more than just think about it we made up a composite quarterback Brent only active NFL quarterbacks we've selected eight players six of whom have played in the Super Bowl and we'll start with U Kenny Stabler uh number one his uh ability to read the coverage to read the defense we got a radar unit up there in his helmet Stabler takes what the defense gives him doesn't throw into the strength of the coverage if you can't read a defense you're going to have troubles you're going to have a lot of interceptions and and Kenny does a good job there the next uh quality comes under Bob greasy that's his Poise his coolness and his Cadence keeps the defense off off bounds strong arm we go to Bert Jones [Music] the strong arm that uh bird has is also accurate some quarterbacks can throw deep but they can't throw Aid and Bert can uh thread the needle now hardt has the quick release very difficult to sack if you look at his Statistics over the years he sack very sellem now leadership generalship and heart we go to this guy number 17 Billy Kilmer he's at his best when he's bleeding when he's hurt there he is coming off the bench and throwing a touchdown pass to Mike Thomas to beat the New York Giants the next quality is toughness and durability and that that's Terry Bradshaw he can stay in the cup take a hit like that hold the ball the last second and release it running ability Roger stabu the shotgun was designed for Roger he's not just a good runner he's an excellent Runner picking up vital yardage the last uh quarterback Fran Tarkington maneuver ability the ability to uh scramble and buy time to pass nobody throws to The Backs or the tight ends any better than Fran targon and there's our composite quarterback George what are some of the other things that a quarterback might need know other categ setting up to pass Bert Jones is excellent uh play action pass and I also like Bert Jones hitting why on a quick pass Bob greasy Waggles Kilmer pardon me what's a waggle Waggles is a quarterback One Way backs the other way okay Kilmer and Tarkington screen passes Jim Hart and starbu and then two-minute quarterbacks we had to have three couldn't narrow it down to one Stabler one Taron 2 and Kilmer three you mind if I add Hayden to that group he's done good job in that he's coming along very well you know IR you and I have marveled at the series while George has been in the middle of so many of these Washington Dallas brawls but just to sit back as a spectator has to be the finest rivalry in football over the last decade no question about it particularly since 1971 when George Allen went to Washington as the head coach every time the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins play the championship was at stake won the first game so the Cowboys of course have a Revenge motive this afternoon and what a showdown at figur to be so important to both Dallas and Washington to win it the Rivalry between the cool business-like world champion Dallas Cowboys and the emotional Washington Redskins is unequal in pro football and often crosses the border between mutual respect and outright hatred their games bring out heads of state and the best in every player historically each meeting presents an intense No Quarter asked or given brand of football that is fiercely fought if not flawlessly played Dallas swept both games in 1977 something neither team achieved for S years in their first meeting this season Washington moved confidently between the 20s but had to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns never has nine points been enough to produce victory in this series but then again never had the redin defense proved so defiant throughout 60 Minutes Washington denied Dallas the run which opened up the passing lanes for spectacular catches by Tony Hill number 80 the cowboy offensive line tunneled the rush into a crushed Mas which allowed rer stabach to float outside where he found an unobstructed sight line to his receivers trailing 9 to3 with less than two minutes of play Dallas failed twice in the clutch first reliable Drew Pearson number 88 bobbled a pass that would have given the Cowboys a first down at the Washington 2 then on Fourth and goal starbox scatter armed a pass to Hill who had beaten a fallen defender in the end zone perhaps the most Grievous mistake was made by Redskins quarterback Joe fisman who hot doged backwards to the end zone and into a safety instead of safely falling on the ball and running out the clock last night on a television station in Dallas they ran that thyman play at least three times and talked to him to help motivate the Cowboys all right our good friend Jack Whitaker is back from Australia he's been looking at all that rugby and golf down there and let's see if Jack is back in the football mood I found him for you he's right in the corner let's go to check that well thank you Brent with exquisite timing you've come just at the entrance of the cowgirls but here they come and it is certainly a football day for the first time in the history of the NFC the Dallas Cowboys on this Thanksgiving day will bar all pressmen from the dressing room now this is their answer to get around the pressures of allowing a woman reporter into the dressing room and with a Solomon like decision they say nobody will go in we'll have an interview room and bring the players there thus bringing hows of bitter anguish from reporters who now lose the immediacy of talking to any player they want and probably some size of relief to players who get a little bit of privacy Dallas of course has always been one of the great innovators in professional football and it's going to be very interesting to see how this new departure from tradition is going to work out now against this historic background we have a game that pits the two teams tied for the lead in the NFC East a bitter rivalry between them as ER cross just pointed out a team Dallas apparently going back up to their potential and Washington coming down they won their first six and now beset with injuries have found it very difficult to win in the last 6 weeks one of their wins was against this Dallas team however in a game that saw the quarterback kman run in for a safety thus angering the Cowboy players so against this background you would think that we have a head-on collision set for the crossroads well I'd like to think of it more as a meeting at a four-way stop Street intersection a four-way stop sign intersection requires the first person who gets there to have the right away but it seldom works out that way and I think today's game might prove to be the same way Dallas heavily favored but the way things have gone in the NFL the past few weeks that could mean hardly nothing so Brent with a strong step toward cowardness I will say definitely that whoever wins this game today will lead the NFC East at least for the next 10 days bold prediction from our man down on the field but here's where I think Dallas has got a big Edge two tall will overcome Williams unless they bring that Fugate over to help block block him off a little bit the offensive line's dead even I'm going to give the running game to doret and lad low special teams even Mosley definitely has the kicking game I have to give the edge to to Dallas in other words you agree with that large handicap that they a after a slow start why is it that the Washington Redskins in the Dallas Calia boys are such b enemies when they meet it's like a Super Bowl game it's that important to each team what as far as since I've been with Dallas uh it goes back to the 71 season where it really started we we we had lost to Baltimore in the Super Bowl the year before and our uh some of our management we're talking about we we had a uh uh a team of the future a dynasty and then we played Washington and George Allen's first game here it was in the Cotton Bowl and they beat us and man they went back to the locker room and they started saying well Dallas has got a Dynasty huh that's a bunch of baloney and that then the word started and that that year it was Washington's first year under Allen they had a great team and we battled them down to the wire and we finally beat them out we went on to play Miami in the Super Bowl but that developed the verbal abuse started back and forth and then in 70 uh the following year we played them in the playoffs up there in Washington they beat us pretty good and uh since then we've gone back and forth and just because of of that first game in 71 where they had to beat us and we had to beat them to to to get into the playoffs and into the Super Bowl and when that when that happens and then a few verbal things back and forth it it gets heated all right Detroit has beaten Denver this afternoon by a score of 17 to4 Jane you are with the quarterback make a prediction for me Washington Dallas well you know when I first started with you I told you that if it ever came to Washington Dallas I wouldn't know what to go for but Dallas I pick 21 21 to 17 217 Dallas serve I like your 21 points I'm lousy at this I'll take Dallas 21 to 10 2110 Dallas coach Allan 17 Dallas 14 receive Mark Mosley's kickoff Detroit beat Denver as I'm sure you know 1714 this match between the Cowboys 8 and four and the Redskins 8 and four and B Johnson receives the kickoff back close to his own End Zone slips at about the 18 Terry Anderson made the tackle let's look at the offense for Dallas the offensive line is playing extremely well Donovan Scott Fitzgerald Forever at Center raffy and Rayfield right big cats playing right tackle pretty well those the receivers Tony Hill and Preston or Drew Pearson rather the wide receivers look out for Tony Hill today he may break out he's been sort of stopped occasionally the last couple of games Billy Joe DUI is the tight end those are the backs starback the trigger man first down Dallas at their own 19 yd line Scott lad law and KY Dorset the running back and this is Dorset Dave buts and will'll set the rest of that Washington defense for you here's the front four and L is playing Super he's replaced mcdull at Left End big butts Brooks is really in his first start there as Darron tabs back in the hospital and Coy Bacon he's leveled off the playe right end a little bit the linebackers are acting Brad Dusk and Chris hurger on the on the outside Harold mclinton number 53 in the middle and there's their secondary and that secondary is hitting in that first Monday night game probably uh beat the Cowboys they really can hit got about a yard on first down so we'll make it second and [Applause] nine ony Hill and he was inbounds just shy of a first down a good throw from Roger Joe lavender knocked him out catch number 33 but watch the way Roger stabach throws this this is the way he's been throwing about the last month and I mean on target a smooth tight spiral and Hill might be the best third round draft choice of come this league in a long time third round draft choice from Stanford the other wide receiver of course is Drew Pearson who was not a draft choice a walk on actually John NY went to Philadelphia and that's how Dallas got that draft choice for Tony Hill not bad third and one not bad at all Scott L law gets back into that fullback spot replacing new house and L law will get the carry and get the Dallas first down Gerard Williams The Blocking up front by Scott Donovan very good we saw the young guy from Stanford a little bit against Green Bay and Milwaukee because the team was ahead but to be the starter for the first time since back in 76 uh that's some responsibility goty to give John Fitzgerald a center two a lot of credit for a good controlling block on Middle Line back Harold mclinton let's see how big those splits are by the Dallas offensive line see if they're trying to get some room first and 10 at their own 36 Cowboys operate with Pearson in motion and now everybody else is in motion like raford he might have moved Burton Lawless a shuttle guard might have moved looked like his right ankle sort of made the stutter step huh of course the early turnovers is really the reason Dallas had so many problems this season they fumble 16 times and when they do it early uh sometimes Roger had to wait to get the offense on the field false start number 66 offense still first down it was Burton Lawless that moved but that was the force of Dick Jorgenson the referee the Umpire is John kek Dave Hawk is the head linesman line judg is Dick hanac the back judge Lori Hagerty side judge royal catg guard and the field judges dick goak so it'll be first and 15 Dallas dorette goes down and so does one of the officials handker in the grass of Dave butw Tony Dorset they're going to call Kenny Houston for unbuckling the headstrap on Dorset as he went by again uh it's it's not an intentional foul it's just one that the official feel they must call to protect people watch to the left of your screen you'll see 27 show early he's an allpro and he's super at playing off people and tried to make an equipment change on Dorset didn't mean to all sted Love and War right that doesn't matter 39 no score Dallas in Washington at Texas stadium D set two three not much more than that like Perry Brooks is playing a sliding defensive tackle in there a little bit obviously with dyron they can do more stunning but I'll tell you this secondary and the linebackers on the Redskins will make you pay they are very tough and they're aggressive they attack on defense the score in the first game between these two teams this year was 95 there is Brooks of whom Tom Brook Shire was just speaking first big start for him second and seven situation right here Drew oh Gerard Williams almost got a hand on that one and perhaps was close to an interception close to getting beat up the sidelines too a short out if you want to intercept that one good luck you won't be in the league very long a great play by Pearson to make the catch and you're right number 45 had a pretty good shot at it another good throw by Roger and right on first down Dallas the line of scrimmage their own 49 no score Mike dka strolls around behind Tom Landry Dorset and lad law the [Applause] setback Tony B with no place to go finally ran into one of his own men the floor the Washington defense converge pretty good play by Coy Bacon on the outside some people have thought you could run inside the defensive right end but try to get outside he makes the quick move came over from Cincinnati and I tell you for about seven or eight games played about as well as you can play defensive end but he sort of leveled off a little bit they all have intensity is hard to keep over 16 rough ones you know oh yeah those two extra regular season games make a big difference not only injury-wise but Mally we're tired too yeah Roger St pits back to Dorset this time [Applause] some Ken Houston made the tackle on Tony Dorset and the ball showed up late but the ball came loose from the overhead camera watch that play develop this is from the eye nothing fancy about this you've been seeing this if you've been watching football for about 45 years but watch the ball almost be be fumbled by dorset's got nine coming [Applause] in hello there it'll be third down now for the Cowboys Preston Pearson and Tony Dorset as Roger starbo operates this time from the shotgun formation comes out of it and out of it and has the Dallas first down harl gch finally brought him down from behind but Roger starback in rip him Washington could could win today because I know the Rivalry I know how the players feel about Dallas I think Dallas started fast they haven't been starting fast they were 21 to 69 in the first quarter and today they scored the first four times they possessed the football I I think the Redskins came out throwing the football which is really not their style I think you have to run a little bit against those cowboys establish the run and then throw the football but Dallas just played a superb ball ball game and made the Redskins look bad indeed now Jimmy the Greek what does this mean as far as the NFC Playoff Picture is concerned brenet puts LA and Dallas in the playoffs but it makes it at five teams uh Minnesota Green Bay Atlanta Philadelphia and Washington it's a it's a real toss up and of course Minnesota and Green Bay meet on Sunday on CBS and Minnesota is a slight favorite but you know N9 and seven 8 and8 could be the fifth Wild Card the second wild card it's true even the talking to Roger stck so let's go down to ir and find out what's happening Jane and Brent uh Jane you know this F had spent some time with him last night Roger saach we winning quarterback Rog you have to feel pretty good well well it's a uh you know a great great Victory we played him in Washington and a very close game and we didn't get the end zone and today we started off on the right foot and we scored our running backs uh Scott Tony and were running very well and Drew made a couple fine catches so it was uh and Tony Hill set up won with a fine catch so we got off to a good start which has been unusual for us this year Roger it was an awful lot of pregame buildup you know that there was hate between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys there anything to that I don't like to use the word hate there's uh probably uh it's a very competitive rivalry and it's more than a friendly rivalry uh it's pretty deep rooted and we always play a key game against them and they've won some against us and uh today we won a big game so uh they're a very fine football team and uh they've given us all we could handle through the years and it's been pretty even actually rre thanks very much and go Ahad and take a shower congratulations Tony D set the beast from the East Tony how you doing I tell you let me tell the country why we're standing out here on the on the stadium you know the the Dallas Cowboys started a new policy today that you could not interview the ball players in the locker room so we had to grab Tony Dorset and Scott L law and uh Roger stach out here on the field and I really appreciate you stopping down here to talk to us Tony how do you feel you had a big day I feel great uh you know we played a super game it was a must game from both clubs and I think we came out after the short layoff and we played some superb football it was a must like I said must game for both teams and I think we Rose to the challenge let me put you on a spot Tony you had a lot of trouble handling the ball early with fumbles the last few weeks you've handled the pretty well have you done anything different are you just concentrating about hanging on the ball what have you done well I think it just goes back to concentration going back to fundamentals I think it was a whole problem with our whole team I think for about a month span you know we were down and everyone was cing the Cowboys out because we weren't I don't think mentally prepared we were waiting for people to go out and do things make things happen instead of going out sorry we were waiting for things to happen instead of going out and make things happen and it was the same with myself I think it was just a little lack of mental concentration after I went back into practice and started concentrating on holding football uh it's it's worked out for me quite well the last couple of weeks thanks very much congratulations again I have Scott L law down here but I think we're have to go back to the booth to Brent busber so Brent all right ER thank you very much and of course one thing to keep in mind Dallas a week from Sunday plays New England what a game that's going to be and Washington has to regroup in time for Miami Jane where's Jack Whitaker going he's standing by he also has a report for us uh Jack thank you Jane about a week ago yesterday I was standing in a hotel bar in Sydney Australia and inw walk Miller Barber who's the number one foot B fan on the PGA tour and he said Jack do you believe what Dallas did to Green Bay and I said no I hadn't seen the game and he said they're the best football team I ever saw well I'm inclined to agree with Miller after today what Dallas has done now since that loss to Miami has put three very strong games together against Green Bay against New Orleans last week and here today one of the strongest performances ever yes Washington offensively was lacking because of a lot of injuries but defensively they're still pretty good and had the feeling today Dallas might have beaten any team of the 20 other 25 they're going through the momentum very well it has to carry them through the playoffs into the championship game and next week they get a good test two and I think Tom Landry has them ready all right Brent very much prior to the start of the game Greek you and I talked about the absence of Robert new house and what it might mean to the Cowboys but you know what Tex told is that he was just as good runs a little faster and blocks as well but I still like new house for that four yard all right L law standing by with her cross down on the field let's go to them now Bren here he is Scott L had a real big day and had of course a big pair of shoes to fill today because Robert new house was out you did a big job Scott well thank you very much uh it was just an enjoyable day today it's the best way to spend Thanksgiving and get everybody in the game and uh I fortunately had a pretty good day and we had a terrific day blocking on the line you know in all honesty I mean you've been here for a while you know the Dallas Cowboy system well Robert new house is a starting fullback you've played a lot of football down here and you've always played well haven't you well I it's been enjoyable I always seem to get up for the occasion the last time I started I think I had the same stats first half and uh I've just had some real good luck it seems as though the offensive line has has blocked well just about the time I get in so it's been tremendous what kind of a ball carrier are you what kind of style of carrying the ball do you have would you say you're a power back a quick back what kind of football player is Scott Le oh maybe a little bit of a small Lona I don't have a lot of speed you see I got caught from behind but uh I just have probably tried for a good body Lane and and uh go where there nobody else at Scott thanks very much congratulations nobody else is there 37 to 10 the Dallas afternoon in Irving Texas Roger starback on the Scramble for 15 yards coach Allen well there's his running ability we talked about at the start of the show picking up a vital first down and going forward not sliding into second base now that's set up a field goal and here's 50 yds to Tony Hill George on the button accurately throwing fine catch the defender played the the man rather than the ball now Washington gives it up here Riggins on the fumble this was a costly turnover he had good yardage Barnes will return this to the 8 yd line for the Cowboys and from there George Scott lelaw took it in for the touchdown yes he went over the top and that's the way to score over the top Drew Pearson one of the finest receivers in the NFL 53 yard scoring play another Well throwing ball starbar had good protection here he is hitting him again George what have you got to do against Pearson well you got to double him most of the time you got to try to jam him and not let him get off the line of scrimmage and Roger Stak told Jane last night that the Cowboys were oh so ready for Joe thyman and the Washington Redskins and he was right as you watch that defensive pressure come right down the middle and fax Iceman and you know George I've got a question about play calling I just have to ask it late in the game in the third quarter of the fourth I couldn't believe that the skins were running I think they ran five straight times when they were way down well Joe isn't calling his plays you know the plays are all sent in from the sidelines okay Jane we've got to go back to New
