happy days hi i'm kurt gowdy and welcome to another sports classic today an amazing game and of course an amazing college football series here to help us relive the drama of that day from undefeated notre dame ranked number one and going for its first perfect season in 15 years the all-american left in and record-breaking past receiver number 85 jack snow handsome an inspirational first year leader who followed in the footsteps of rockne and lay coachera porsigian and the all-american quarterback and the heisman trophy winner that year number seven john hewort those are the revitalized fighting irish of notre dame and now for the trojans of sc who must win this game to get a bid for the rose bowl all american running back number 20 mike garrett left halfback the star quarterback of the trojan team number 15 craig ferding and ferdig's favorite target the right half back number 12 rod sherman well those are john mckay 64 trojan stars and we're pleased to have with us the man who broadcast this gridiron classic the voice of southern cal football tom kelly welcome tom thank you kurt nice to be with you set us up on the game it'll be the last game of the season right and in 1963 notre dame had a losing season they won only two ball games and they lost seven and one of the victories they had was against usc strangely enough three very famous coaches terry brennan and joe kuharik and hugh devore had been uh unable to pull the irish out of the football doldrums back at south bend and then they came along with the first non-alum ever to coach at uh south bend era parsigan and he had coached with great success at northwestern and back at south bend the era of era began in the greatest comeback in college football history really parsigan guided notre dame in 64 to nine straight victories and now just um southern california stood between farsight and notre dame and a national championship and a truly brilliant year for the trojans curt thera stakes were less nationally recognized than that of the fighting average but really for sc was great enough they had finished in a tie in the pac-8 conference for the championship and reports were that after the game a committee would meet and decide who was going to go to the rose bowl oregon state or southern cal to represent the west and quite frankly i think if you'd ask anybody on that 64 sc team they would have told you that they had been told if you beat notre dame you're headed for pasadena well it's two days after thanksgiving 1964. notre dame versus usc let's relive this great gridiron classic with the voice of tom kelly crowd of over 80 000 on hand at the la coliseum to see the last regular season game of the year for usc and notre dame the irish unbeaten looking to be number one jack snow and middle in the backfield at quarterback craig ferdig mike garrett rod sherman and ron heller the rest of the trojan team sc kicked off to notre dame but the irish were unable to move the ball and kick good protection fires over the middle jack snow in the end zone touchdown notre dame got behind phil lee and with 13 54 left in the first half the try for the extra point is good and notre dame leads usc 10 to nothing sc gets the ball following the kickoff second and 10 on the trojan 25 ferdigan at quarterback high formation takes the snap flips it out to garrett at the 20 turns the corner at the comes naturally back to throw again this one to the sidelines walsky at the 24. fights his way down to the 17 a 14-yard gain two running plays have picked up six yards and now here at the quarterback fakes the handoff gives on the inside handoff to eddie over the left tackle spot he's down close to the five-yard line first and goal as mike gears made the stop for the trojans leading 10 to nothing the irish looking for more huert pitching back to wolsky he's turning the corner in the end zone touchdown notre dame and the point after with the irish now leading southern cal 17 to nothing with a minute 15 left to go in the first half mike jarrett has run the kickoff back to the 46-yard line for the trojans and now with less than a minute to go ferdig rolling back to his left sets up fires 15 yards and now the last play ferdig rolling out garrett's got it to 25 but the irish are there fight dances to the 20 but too many of the fighting irish surround him and drop him there as the half comes to an end and notre dame leads sc 17 to nothing before mr taylor taught the world to play before fiberglass before parquet before the word doctor was spelled with the jade and ballrooms were second and third for notre dame counter now the fullback finds a big hole and bangs his way to the 40 and down to the token 39 yard line first down for the irish third nate now for notre dame at the sc 26 hubert beautiful protection back to pass fires it complete at the 10 down to the nine yard line phil sheridan on the reception bane and flick smith made the stop for sc but it's a 17-yard gain the irish on the march huert back pitching to bolsky it goes to spray the ball is free the trojans died for it blackwood's got it and sc turns the iris away that drive is stifled the score stays notre dame 17 usc seven now we're in the opening play in the fourth quarter notre dame moving the ball just 15 minutes away from a perfect season here at the quarterback the heisman trophy winners trying to find the perfect gear takes one hand off gives kowalski right side great blocking big hole fights his way to the 30 inside the 30 and down to the trojan 27. fred hill was there on the stop hewitt takes the hand off the wolfski instead pitching out to eddie eddie trying the left side turns the corner at the 20. hit as he gets to the 15 and down to the 13-yard line eight yards in the first down notre dame's offense unable to move but now the give to cantor driving for a first down maybe a touchdown he's at the one-yard line it'll be first and goal for the irish at the trojan one-yard line notre dame leading 17-7 counter gets the handoff notre dame scores but the irish are called for holding illegal use of the hands on offense the touchdown doesn't count and the ball goes back to the thirteen two plays game three fourth down now from the twelve you were back to pass looking looking looking through the end zone out of the end zone incomplete the ball goes out to the 20. the irish have had two golden scoring chances get away but they still lead 17-7 now less than eight minutes to go ferdig passing from his own goal line out to the 25-yard line it's complete the hill fights and way up field down to the 36 before rasus makes the stop second and 10 for the trojans trying to fight their way back ferdig again going to the air over the middle complete the rod sherman walk down at the 49 a 13-yard pickup verdict takes the pass hands off garrett's got the ball at midfield dives his way inside at the 45 and down to the irish 42. nine yard pickup for garrett now put the ball at the 40. ferdig is back to pass his effort complete hill's got it at the 26. terry makes the stop there for notre dame 14 yards pick up in the first down second and seven for the trojans hurting back to pass throwing in the end zone hills got it touchdown usc with 509 left sc has within four points they trail 17 to 13 and the try for the extra point coming up and hold everything ron heller came on the field too many men a flag is down the kick was missed the irish refused the penalty and the score stays 17-13 notre dame with about five minutes left to go in this football game well in opening the third quarter the usc men in four minutes you drive and score what were you doing differently craig well uh actually i was completing some passes for a change now the guys had been blocking the first half mike was running real well rob was catching the balls that were close to him and fortunately i was throwing him somewhere where he could catch him in the second half now mike's running outside very well you're turning that corner you're getting some blocking well um all you do is just you know you're afraid to death and you just move as quickly as you can because you know those people can hurt the reason he was running so good to the outside was alan page was chasing him yeah he was a lot faster when paige was chasing with page chases you run faster than the other side johnny uh let's look back now disaster struck you're down here threatening to score maybe wrap this game up you've got a pitch out of an option play that goes astray and usc recovery how about you doing the slow-mo replay well i think this is the same play that we scored on before so we got down the same position to hit right here and the ball's behind him i should have got it free and behind bill walsh he didn't have a clean shot at it and we scrambled for it and that that killed the drive era 17-13 now we're going back the game in just a minute but how worried are you now i was concerned obviously but when they didn't get that extra point i knew that it was going to require a touchdown to beat us and not a field goal and i felt that we'd be able to hold up one of the things that occurred as we'll see here in the film which was a a very critical thing that occurred that changed field position drastically that made it a little bit easier to go in for that final score they only had to go i think 39 yards uh jack snow got a great kick off and mike got it down around the 19 or 20 yard line and i think we stopped him right down in there so they had to go 80 yards what time is it subaru all-wheel drive time time to get it all up to 2 000 in customer cash rebates depending on model and financing as low as 0 apr time to get incredible savings on an incredible all-wheel drive 2003 outback legacy or baja that's up to two thousand dollars in customer cash rebates and zero percent financing hurry to subaru all-wheel drive time now because time runs out september 2nd suarez i different but who is the real kobe with these charges everything's being uncovered i'm innocent sport century 7 eastern tonight on espn classic with less than three minutes to play the trojan defense has gotten tough and worried errol parseghian paces the sidelines the irish have the ball on their own 34th third and fourth here at the quarterback hands off to eddie sweeping to the left the trojan defense is waiting for him there and they bang him down at about the 34. no gain the irish have to kick and snow is back to take the snap he gets it and gets it away a fine kick high and deep mike garrett wakes downfield at the 28 takes it gives ground back to the 25 the irish are on top of him he's down at the 23 but hold everything the irish are called for holding and they're going to have to kick it again this time from the 19. snow back gets it away this time jared is waiting on the 46. he has it there comes to this side now back to the other side which value dives between two tacklers at midfield at the 45 squirms and fights his way to the notre dame 42 fumbles the ball rolls free lopez recovers and the trojans have the ball at the irish 40-yard line and now ferding from the 40 for the first down back to pass beautiful protection looking looking fires down the middle that's complete the hill at the 20 fights his way inside and down to the 17-yard line a 23-yard gain the potions trailing by four and ferdig is back to pass again sets up fires out on the left side hill has got it in the end zone incomplete ruled incomplete even though he made a great catch all right third and eight from the notre dame 15. ferdig rolling out of the pocket now giving ground the ball is pop free on the ground hold everything the official says he was trying to pass a break for the trojans as paige knocked the ball loose herded and the trojans maintained possession it's fourth and eight now in the 15. ferdig rolling back fires down sherman at the three in the end zone the trojans have scored for the minute 33 left in the game sherman beats terry the crowd goes wild it's sc 19 notre dame 17 and the tokens have staged up brilliant come back here at the coliseum now the try for the extra point joy reigns supreme on the trojan side of the field troy winslow to hold donnell tries to kick hits up it's good sc leads 20-17 17 but hold everything notre dame's got a minute and 33 seconds left they trailed 20 to 17. less than 30 seconds now a field goal will tie it no timeouts left cue at the heisman trophy winner can he pull it out firing long downfield complete out of bounds to stop the clock that's jack snow on the reception at the notre dame 41. only time for one maybe two more plays now the ball at the sc 47 hewitt throws down field and it is going to be intended for snow it's on the ground the game is over no more time pandemonium at the coliseum as the trojans have come from behind to knock off previously unbeaten number one right notre dame 20 to 17. era when that gun went off what was it what were your innermost feelings well kurt as i recall it there was a picture taken by life magazine that did a series on that story and they as a matter of fact they caught a picture of me that told it all just as rod was scoring the touchdown craig had thrown the ball and just as he was going into the end zone i could see the undefeated season the national championship and i think i grabbed my head and they captured it right at that point and that told the whole story of how i felt it was a it was a moment that you know you've worked so hard and you think you've got it and you're going to make it all right and the third down play that uh that craig had we had him uh probably back around i suppose close to the 30-yard line would have made it fourth down they could have ruled it a fumble or an incomplete pass or grounding of the ball they ruled in complete pass the ball was moved back up to the 17. it would have been fourth down back around to 30. and that was a very crucial call at that stage but it was a smart move on craig's part because it was one of those things that could have been called two or three different ways if he didn't get rid of the ball it would have been fourth down probably 30 yards to go and we'd have dropped off error proceeding talked about craig friday going back and uh the incomplete pass call or fumble and whoever buying let's have you do the slow motion rerun in this craig well on third down we were going to roll out here and as i mentioned before kurt we were going to block nine people and i'm going to try to hit fred hill and alan page there's got a hold of me and i belong to the screen actors guild at this time and that's one of the better acting jobs that i've ever done that was an incompleted pass in my mind aaron's laughing over there coach this game is so much a game of breaks how do you reconcile all that in your mind touchdowns that went in that won't count maybe an incompleted pass maybe not maybe it should have been a fumble how do you live with that one of the great things about participating in athletics is that you learn not only from winning but you learn from losing and you learn to live with those things every day is not a bright sunshiny day every day you know doesn't everything happen happens to you is not always good and that's what happens in athletics and i think it's a great learning process sure we had to live with it sure was it was tough and sure it hurt but uh they had come a long way and you couldn't destroy the the things that had been done and we were proud of them and we're proud of the team and i think that the uh the guys uh i know we all heard from that but we learned a little lesson from that as we move through life everything in life is not that easy exactly right you need some sometimes you need to lose a game of course i didn't like the way that one happened right garage sherman this play was called 84z delay that you caught the touchdown pass explain what this means 84z delay the 84z delay is the in the context that we rented that particular afternoon i had the privilege of being in the backfield with mike garrett and as you know defense is keyed on mike we put mike in motion coming out to my side i merely delay at the line of scrimmage and then break across the middle looking for an open area mike had already gone in motion i think the defense had adjusted i ended up in a one-on-one situation with the defensive back now you go into the locker room you've beat notre dame as a great wind-up of the season and you're ready to go to the rose bowl what happened well uh how are you told of the news that oregon's favorite go instead of you what were your thoughts i think most of the team had gone to a dinner we were at a team party neighborhood restaurant and uh i'd never felt so high or so great after a game as that victory and then two two hours later uh at the restaurant uh could not believe it what were your thoughts craig on this well i was a senior so it affected me worse than these two people because uh mike was a junior and rob was a sophomore so they had another shot and i cried because we wanted to play in the rose bowl very badly and we thought we could and as mike garrett said later on he'd give his heisman trophy back just to play in the road what was that true mike yeah i felt like and so i always wanted to play in the rose bowl and of course i'm from los angeles and i would see the rose bowl game every year on tv and i kind of missed that the experience of playing against notre dame in the coliseum today was the most unbelievable experience i've ever had in athletics never before i was ever in such a massive stadium the sign was so deafening that you couldn't hear the quarterback in the huddle and as we were marching down and we got third for the last like it's fourth down and on the 17th and and i'm saying i don't know they gotta pass because i don't want it i don't know what i can't go 17 years since these guys and i didn't know what we're going to do and he called the 84z delay and lion said i hope it works guys i just hope and uh when we scored it was like the sound was just so deafening that you just became paralyzed in in where you're standing just couldn't move and all i could do is said oh my god oh my god thanks to jack snow era persiggian and john heward of notre dame and mike garrett craig furtick and rod sherman of usc and utah and kelly for the excellent job you did on a play-by-play of this classic and that's the way it was when the 64 trojans upset the unbeatable undefeated mighty fighting irish who were only 95 seconds from [Music] immortality [Music] happy days are here again [Music] oh
