[Music] the winning of world war 2 is now history and credit has been given to a combination of our gallant allies Armed Forces mighty production lines vast and superior airpower scientists who came up with the impossible and to our American supply lines that covered the world but little has been said about the men and women who kept the supply lines filled filled with food oils fibers and clothing the Forgotten man and woman who had just as great a part in winning the war the story of the production lines on the American farm is a story of the use of mechanical power as a substitute and a good one for the human muscles and animal power that performed the work in peace and war until the engine came along and nowhere on earth has the use of mechanical power on the farm progressed to anything like the extent that it has in America let's do a little figuring a laborer can develop about 1/10 of a horsepower working all day in the Orient he collects for this work about 6 cents a day cheap labor definitely not he's overpaid yes he is an engine will do the same amount of work for about 1 and 1/2 cents or approximately 15 cents per horsepower per day for fuel and oil and of course can be operated day and night if necessary now remember that the American farmer went into the war with 40 million mechanical horsepower in his tractors alone to say nothing of his power units trucks autos small electric motors horses mules and of course implements to go with them this huge storehouse of power while away short of his demands was nevertheless sufficient to do the job our farm production line story is also one of the farmers cooperation and teamwork with the scientists plant breeders soils men livestock breeder and the engineer it is a story of the teamwork that resulted in bumper crops of food and fibers all through the war years and into the peace it is an achievement without parallel in the history of the farm world the Platt men have for many years search the world for new and better plan experimental plots covered thousands of acres and our wartime emergency proved their value from fabulous Persia came alfalfa to become our best forage plant the plant breeders have developed new strains that resist disease and set better and larger crops of seed from the steppes of Russia came drawn grass to regress our Western farms and our water ways to make pasture where other grasses had failed and to yield both a crop of seed and excellent pasture in the same year then from Japan came kudzu the Wonder vine that has done so much to heal the gullies and eroded banks of the south and is now providing excellent forage and hay for the Stockman who is rapidly coming to the front in these territories from Korea the lespedeza that now covers our southern fields like a blanket and that furnished hay and forage on fields that had once stopped producing anything from siberia came the grass that helped to rebuild the northwest Crested wheatgrass Australia the land down under furnished us with another crop that is being hailed as the greatest forage find in a generation subterranean clover so named because like the ostrich it sticks its head in the ground a dense growing self-seeding pasture hay and seed crop it does well in the territories of mild winters and on soils that are high in acid and low in organic matter it thrives along our west and Gulf coasts and from the Carolinas to Texas on the very soils that refuse to grow most of our known varieties of clovers and legumes sub clover furnishes pasture for six months ample reseeding and a crop of seed that equals a grain crop in value but that isn't all of the story chewings fescue or alta fescue in fact several other grasses that mature and seed at different times can be sown with this legume and can be harvested for seed like this out of fescue in Oregon or it can be utilized to extend pastures for a considerably longer period we haven't even started to find all of the ways in which this crop can be utilized soil builder cash crop and moneymaker that's sub clover everywhere new and improved varieties are helping to produce larger yields of forage and seed crops here in Tennessee a mixture of fuzzy cheat button clover and Korean lespedeza provided year-round pasture to seed crops a year and feed for more livestock per acre than ever before in Kentucky a new and improved strain of meadow fescue is providing green fields the year round and we mean green fields in the Middle West Ladino clover waited for war time to get in and demonstrate what a splendid job it could do in improving and extending pastures this mixing of the right legume crop with suitable grasses has improved pastures as well as hay crops for the middle west brom and alfalfa have been making records not only for pasture but for better hey here's an excellent crop being harvested for grass and cyllage the bog type pastures were made to produce by drainage of a new and inexpensive kind mould draining simpler than tiling isn't it here's another development that's new winter pasture on our Gulf Coast a whole story in itself and a story that is changing the dairy picture of the nation this also was made possible by utilizing a mixture of legumes and grasses that mature at different times now they have year-round pasture year-round milk from grass is now an established fact from the Carolinas to Texas beef too came into the picture in this area here the plant breeders and the livestock men worked together to produce not only better feed but stock suitable to the climate hybrid cattle this time quarter bred Bremer's seemed to be the answer they have spread from Texas to Florida examples of this kind are everywhere we are just getting underway but the plant breeders didn't stop with forage new strains of wheat rice barley flax and oats have pushed our cereal crops to new records here's a new wheat that's something to look at then the vegetable crops came in for their share of improvement here's one that is exceptional a head lettuce that thrives in the Middle West Lila pole beams that beat out the weather in the same territories hybrid tomatoes that set fruit even in a greenhouse when the blossoms are treated with plant hormones new hybrid onions that grow to enormous sizes in fact they must be planted 50% thicker than normal in order to keep them from becoming too large to market these new hybrids are the latest product of the plant hybridize err skill they are also highly resistant to disease and insects this new development opened the way for easy hybridization of a number of other crops with the attendant gain in yields fruits of all kinds grapes apples pears berries had all come under the eyes and hands of the plant scientist with gratifying results producing bigger and better crops where they were needed most the soils man also had a big share in this job the soil conservation practices started after World War 1 to correct the mistakes made in our farming system have paid big dividends dividends not only in bigger crops but in more stable farms and in better citizens thousands of miles of terraces have been built and maintained not only in the South but on a nationwide scale millions of acres have been stripped cropped to furnish yields far in excess of those secured on these fields before these practices were put into effect and contour farming the practice of farming around the hill instead of up and down has increased yields in practically every state in the Union some of the results obtained by a combination of these soil saving practices together with the newer crops are almost unbelievable new yields from old fields are now an established fact then to the engineers who gave the farmer the rubber-tired tractor and the all crop harvester have been working hand in hand with both the farmer and the scientist working to make farming both pleasant and profitable let's see what this group all working together have been able to do with corn our largest cultivated crop science had developed hybrid corn and the growing of these hybrids was pretty well established long before Pearl Harbor but the mentum gained in pre-war years really paid off in a big way during the last few years last year's corn crop was upped over 600 million bushels as a result of hybrids alone this is just an indication of what's going on and a hint of what's to come the yields from hybrids keep on going higher and higher hundred bushel crops are no longer considered large 200 bushel yields are not yet common but they are around the corner and the Corn Belt now extends from coast to coast these larger crops are seldom grown on the Czech Road fields that were so typical of the Corn Belt but have gradually gone to the narrower spaced rows drilled to utilize every inch of ground and fertilized by side dressings at planting ordering early cultivation and while by far the larger percentage of our huge crop is still picked by hand 1 and 2 roll mounted pickers did their share to cut down hand labor and prove beyond a doubt that they could harvest and save anything the plant breeders could bring forth from their magic box each new advancing crop found the Machine ready to do the job even sweet corn for canning roasting ears to you is picked successfully by a mechanical picker which gently snaps the ears from the stalk and elevates them into a wagon but you may be wondering if these extra big crops won't deplete the soil at too rapid a rate the answer is no all of the nourishing food material in the plant all of the proteins carbohydrates the fats and vitamins come from the air only a tiny percentage of the plant's total comes from the soil that's part of the story of the hybrids more efficient leaf traps to catch more life from the air then remember that the residues from big crops left on the land fatten the soil with houmous the one material in which a very great percentage of our soils are still deficient we have learned how to supply the necessary minerals to make up any deficiency but this amounts to a very small item even on the largest crop remember a big yield costs no more to raise than a small one teamwork between science the farmer and industry has found many new uses for corn here are a few of the products turned out by one manufacturer corn oil core binder hominy feeds pastes adhesives Brewers grits corn flakes dextrose sugar corn starch corn syrup sausage binder and many others sorghum's have also been improved and developed into vastly better plants with larger yields and a far greater number of uses hybridizing sorghum's wants a slow expensive process may now put this crop on a much larger and more important scale saving sorghum's for feed is now a simple and easy matter where Green feeds were desired the whole plant was ensouled with the new row crop forage harvester making a high protein feed of excellent quality or when left for seed the crop was harvested in this manner and if moisture was too high for dry storage the seed was unsold in a trench silo in a very simple and inexpensive manner pit or trench plain earth or cement lined trapped down tight supplied with enough moisture covered with straw or paper than with earth stored until needed simple wasn't it trenches were usually long and narrow and feeding was from the end spoilage almost nil the ensel grain was readily ground with a hammer mill and strange as it may seem broke up nicely with no juice or excess moisture stock of all kinds thrived on it this plan answers the storage problem for the whole Southwest and for feeders in the soft corn areas as well let's see what the engineers and research men have been doing with hay and grass for years we stored hay by stacking or stowing away into the barns today there are new machines to go with the new crops and new methods that ensure better forage here are a few of the answers about new ways to handle hay power cutting in the field is now the accepted way it's faster better and uses fewer man-hours new rubber tyred ball bearing rakes also save man-hours they'll cut down on the time required to handle the crop they turn on a dime and operate at higher speeds this is a distinct advantage in tractor use the dry hay with foliage uninjured can be chopped up and blown into the barn or rolled into an entirely new type of bale that saves the foliage and does not break or split the stems one man handles the whole job no wire or sore fingers ordinary binder twine wraps the Bale and keeps it securely bound just another example of what research and engineering have developed to push up farm production but that isn't all here's an entirely different way to handle these bales after they are ready for storage a bale loader and a smart boy does this job in a hurry no lifting or grunting again no sore fingers then when they arrive at the barn the same loader with an extension puts the bales into the loft simple yes but it saves hand labor or at the stack in the field or yard this system takes out heavy labor straw can also be stored in the same manner a whole winter supply in a very small space and when corn picking time comes around this same loader equipped with a small engine puts this prop in the bin or crib water from Grand Coulee Boulder Shasta and dozens of smaller dams gotta start at increasing farm productions Lions in the Pacific Northwest in the Intermountain region and in the upper reaches of the Missouri and Arkansas drainage basin were ready and waiting for the ditches that supplied the water to make things grow then millions more acres were watered from wells drilled in the fields and operated by ordinary power units some through ditches that irrigated level fields by flooding or merely cutting small furrows in the crop surface irrigation or crop insurance that ensured victory over weather also covered huge acreage this type has many advantages it works on uneven ground where levelling would not be practiced also on loose silty or muck land where ditch irrigation would lose too much water it requires only a fraction of the water necessary for complete irrigation and allows the entire area for crop no space required for ditches or laterals the pipe is quickly portable and requires no wrenches or bolts rubber seals make quick joints and the sections of the pipe are light enough to be moved by one man light portable power plants combined with pumps that could be quickly moved from place to place provide the pressure necessary to keep the sprinklers working users of this type of crop insurance have invariably found that they increase their yields per acre pastures that dry up in midsummer are kept green throughout the season increasing yields without additional acreage science research typical American ingenuity has found new ways to combat disease and insect pests on plant life of all kinds chemicals that are not now needed for the destruction of humans are being used to produce better crops on cleaner fields dusters that really get down in the entire foliage of the plant and strangle every living insect others cover the surface of whole fields and put the finishing touch to green sucking plant lice that infest peas and vetch then to potato diseases and pests gave up the ghost in rather short order when the Power Sprayer got into the field the simple mechanical dusters that protect our vegetable crops from all kinds of insects and diseases were used with still another kind of chemical dust to defoliate cotton so that mechanical Pickers could get at the bowls without having to work among heavy foliage this allows a clean fast workmen like job yes and there are many other variations to this unbeatable team of winners and there are many more to come new crops and new methods of handling old crops new tools to add still more strength to the combination and to keep the American Farm miles ahead of any competitive system the flame cultivator that eliminated the hand home of cotton and sugar cane was developed and refined into a practical machine so were the mechanical cotton pickers that speed the harvest on this crop in actual tests the planting chopping cultivating and harvesting of cotton mechanically has reduced production cost to around 8 cents a pound mechanical harvesting of sugarcane once a slow one stock at a time job is now both fast and easy hybrid cane that stands up straight and clean is another product of the plant breeders aren't loading cane has also been mechanized and is now both fast and easy no walking up the ladders and know carrying cane just a small tractor and a cable operated loader does the job the handling of fertilizers is no longer a hard job tractor driven loaders make short work of the barnyard variety and new types of spreaders that handle manure lime and mineral fertilizers are just another way of utilizing the power of the modern rubber tyred tractor the lessons learned in wartime are now going to pay big dividends dividends instill better crops instilled better machines to strengthen the farmers good right arm new crops and new machines now under test will place him still further out in front and keep him in the winner's column for the years to come [Music]
