1931 Ford Model A "Barn Find"! WILL IT RUN?!? Sat for Decades! STUCK ENGINE!

man oh man here we go again and today is a special day guys uh not not a special day because we get to see the wagon outside sitting pretty not a special day because the yeehaws ready to set some land speed records no not a special day because well he's special but they don't make the day special today's a special day because probably six five and a half five and a half years ago I'm gonna roughly say I went and picked up this model A from Waco Texas it was sitting a little lean too kind of like it's doing here ish and I told you guys as we wrapped up on the wagon build and next thing we're going to roll into is finally hopping into the someday Model A and we are not just full starting this build right here but there's one thing I will say about Sir morticus he has about 20 times the knowledge that I have about these things and uh we are getting kind of close on the wagon so I figured while he was here and could educate me a little bit it would be the perfect time to kind of drag this thing out of here I want to say the engine was stuck I can't remember guys y'all know I'm pretty good about just focusing on the engine and staying focused or a project I mean and whenever we went and got this thing I seem to remember my dad pulling on it or prying on it and it being stuck but I guarantee y'all I promise you this my friends and family have looked this model A over more than I have I got it I was building a truck I was focused on the truck it got put back here eventually and yes I've looked it over but I ain't studied it I just I knew at the time it was a good car for what's becoming available anyhow and yeah we're gonna check this thing out good we are gonna see if the engine is stuck uh well it it may not be I honestly don't remember I think my dad said it was stuck what if it's not stuck then maybe it'll run what if it's just barely stuck and we get it unstuck that's the we can do some unsticking the first unstick and we're gonna have to do back here is get it unstuck from this ground and pulled out of this hidey hole it's been in for a while oh we're gonna need to pressure wash this old girl off or what that could be a good creeper right there because you know we're gonna have to crawl underneath there to hook a chain or something oh oh shockingly enough there ain't too much to move here this can go right in the scrap trailer where it belongs now usually this would be a perfect job for the tow roller but my buddies OBS Chevrolet transmission uh it may have a transmission issue right now so I loaned that rig out so if you see it running around pot County it ain't me so unfortunately we ain't got the tug and Tow roller but sir mortar kisses Trucking trailers right there the eight Lug Thug and he's already hooked on so we may just whip that around winch it up on take it to the front try to pull it back off somehow those look good he's got those Beefcake Supremes on this thing uh-huh extra sauce on them beefcakes yeah lordy I think I think something could hold a dump truck a little clearing over here and we might be able to Eagle Eye maneuver this thing out of here do you need more coffee before you speak we about to will it run and find out it's got a stuck engine or something it ain't gonna fit all the way in not without getting a custom Chop top right off the back you're just going to chop it hell no no chopping going on this model eh keeping it all original all original full restoration every night in both just like Henry Ford wanted it small block [ __ ] with the small block Chevy in place but other than that it's going to be Factory except for the mandrel bent frame and lower the ground for fuel economy and other than the custom interior it'll be basically Factory no scratch my hood have these things dude that is a factory install if I've ever seen one right there look at that not only do they use the number nine wire they use the tape and they didn't just go around oh double wrapped it yeah yeah I want to hear these things in action [Music] they're gonna be real loud I got the 12 volts where a six volt system be louder in that tire popping there's ringing before that pop then it fix you no billing's fixed watch out ladies that's why he's riding that bike everywhere all the husbands can't see a bike parked in their yard I don't think it'd be a fast getaway so I think this is a late 31 late 31's got this teardrop for the fuel tank and the firewall there this would have been where an aftermarket heater would have came through the firewall these things since they don't have heater hose is coming off coming off them for heaters they usually just have like a cover that went over the manifold and just sucked all the gases into the car to you know keep you warm that's practically what I have in all my vehicles now yeah I mean it ain't much changed in a almost 100 years it's got this neat coil on the firewall and then it's got this is the wire going to your distributor and then the wire coming from your positive or negative I suppose being a negative ground goes in the top side of the coil it should be a foot push starter that would activate the solenoid or whatever engage the starter but somebody has since put a relay on it yeah wait and then it's got a push button on the top so if we get everything working we should be able to just push that button and crank her over somebody had a deal it doesn't have flexi radiator hoses this is my thumb screw is that a witic oh yeah but she's got the uh flexi Road draft tube on there so there's there's just doing the wine dangle Bill hello nothing good down in there yeah I was expecting something to crawl out where do you check the oil on this thing I was thinking so this cap is I don't think is right there should be a cap that you turn off and then this cap has the dipstick built on so we can just look down in there with our flashlight let's just give her the dip test where we know we're gonna be disappointed it's supposed to feel solid in there hello oh I'm an idiot oh I'm an idiot [Music] oh I'm an idiot oh she just use this dipstick oh that's thinking no that's like that's like gold right there oh perfect well we may have to take her to the Taco Boy by lunchtime I better get to work look at this hose clamped got the plumber's tape with a screw through it oh seen it right right the strap never never that was the only fuse in the entire vehicle we're missing the only fuse so it's gonna have some electrical issues no no surely not holy cow look at that then they must uh for like bleeding the system or something it's got this fitting that's molded into the straight hose huh oh you said she's got the four Blade versus oh yeah there's a there's a two blade fan so I mean this must have been a factory air conditioned model yeah speaking of air conditioning is on Max AC right now yeah and the uh pivot for the air conditioning has seen better days after market as well I think they just had a hand we'll vacuum yeah it used to have vacuum accessory so these wheels guys obviously aren't Factory you think those are 44. 44 yeah well I've talked to like 40 to 48 Ford I think well no those are 15s no they're 16. are they 16 yeah yeah so those are 40 to 48 Fords on top the fenders yep not Factory nope so that was probably like a JC Whitney type deal those hubcaps aren't Factory that pinstripe which looks good but any Factory they match it to the steelies too so someone that kind of gave her a little a little love back in the day somebody's trying to enjoy it one time and it never got touched since then because that when would you guess this stuff was done probably like 50s yeah like early to mid 50s probably because I got the other one over here I think it does oh no it used to you could see where it had one yeah yeah that whole lips bin repaired I did take those totes out and we did just pressure wash it out but they're in a whole lot of awful lot to see in here uh a lack of floor looks like some rusty sub rails or cross members whatever you call these things yeah we're gonna have our uh we'll definitely have some work cut out for us on this thing is that I'm pretty sure that's like a plunger handle for a plunger boots oh it's got the Chrome park brake oh somebody's got the aftermarket brake pedal on it this was a full-on drift car 86 000 miles that's uh pretty impressive yeah for one of these what are we doing here the headlight switch oh and then maybe they must have had a horn and then one of these is your throttle and one is your timing advance and [ __ ] and this is your choke over here here's our push button start they had added to go with our solenoid out there that's like a lake Ford switch too potato sack interior that's about the only piece of interior left other than our superb seat frames here and Yep this stuff is uh more Rusty than I'd realize because like I told you guys I never really looked it over and that stuff seeing better days I remember when you brought her home you brought it home and put it right back there in the back and got back to work on the truck huh and I did give a damn no crank works though oh don't don't you break it I would say you break it you buy it but then you'd break it on purpose you got sir morticus I probably had another 20 of them in your lifetime yeah yeah don't tell no one but your cranks longer is mine where it disappeared in the potato sack yeah we'll pop her up in there pop up in there okay it's even got the glove box built into the door this thing shuts better than the international door I'm not saying much nothing in this yard shots including the stuff I brought I can't imagine there's something in there that's blocking it surely not I think this wind is the least of our worries right now oh is that rusted out too no all right probably a little [Music] this is what happens when you're dealing with 90 year old cars foreign oh my gosh that tank looks like brand new in there is she good yeah I would run that how come my 1931 have a good tank and every little Courier I buy has a trash door because these you can buy brand new or a courier you can't yeah Ayanna back in our day we had good fuel we made real dinosaurs holy cow that's like real good so it's like surprisingly good if the rest of the metal is that nice Factory Ford headlights you could get them in uh painted or stainless clearly these are the stainless they got the Ford script there and then the Ford two light headlamp clearly the hood latches ain't been working for a while somebody stuck some three-quarter inch heater hose over the hood latches and then just wired it shut tie wire oh yeah don't worry about that for all them high speed pulls and then this braided hose I don't believe is original we need a better drop out of our gas tank there oh valve is good we may just have to put some fuel in her the throttle works and the chills free she's ready to rip look at her distributor here guys this is obviously like one I ain't ever messed with a good plug wire just reach up there real close to that as she's running see what happens it's got a dooring marine plug in it I'm guessing those guys are probably no longer in business what what happens when we pop these oh so that's part of your so if you get a new coil wire for this does it come with this whole top cap no it's it should slide right in there slider in and out should but we're not going to try it yeah better not it's a it's a factory Ford distributor cap too it's got the script on it Ford USA right there baby oh good looking points not all corroded up just playing a little crowded up the the morski flick in person that's like you talking about my pressure washing people can watch you flick these and I don't know what it'll do for them there's your lever that's hooked out of steering column you can adjust your timing Advance yeah so and you you saw how the distributor lays whatever like a set of airplane wings so you can't play with the timing by moving the uh no no no so you set your timing you take that screw loose right there and you actually turn the buttons on the distributor and that's how you set your timing by using that pin down there to find top dead center and then if you're running moonshine and you need to give her a little extra just bump her on the column and hightail it what do you think I want to see if she's free I guess we could take these off too and just get this hole custom setup out the way you got a locking players sir yeah hit her some loopy doobie that'll change your mind you guys got safety no yeah be careful be careful because if you're gonna sit her on that I'm gonna get over here really a gestation for the situation yeah try it see what happens but look right there off the uh uh castle nut they beat the you know dog piss out of it to make it fit I need a little snipping action is that just powering these I'll be coming off the bottom of the column where that horn button comes through if we can't do it we'll will it not my good felt maybe this is a deluxe because it's got the stainless band on there I said I've never even noticed that until I pressure washed it what do you think our best bet is to look for that hand crank and see if it fits in there and look at this here's your here's your intake or is that where they were getting vacuumed for the wipers I was wondering where you get back in for the wipers because there's no vacuum ports had to be I bet that ran up the pillar and then over there yeah so those wipers were at on because that definitely maybe it is original it's it's nice maybe I got a rare bird here oh you definitely got a rare bird right here there it is that's where it's leading up to it's got the tow roll a 9105 belt on it oh she'll definitely pull a house down yeah I've seen something that looked like a hand cranking that one tote is a bar that went like this then it went like that they went like this then it went like that then it went like this definitely crank them she has all of her other premium options that came with their stored in here I guess that's our starter today I can deal with these type of starters you'll probably find a way to mess it up too it identifies as a starter today what's behind door number one here huh it's long enough to read she didn't spin too easy huh oh could you imagine it being like negative 20 out and you're trying to get this thing started that's why you drain the oil out and you put in a pan you take it in the house and you put it on the stove oh yes and then you dump it in so she's nice and warmed up ready to go dump it in and they probably knew to fill it in there and then where to actually check the dipstick at you got a horoscope should we pull some plugs and peak in there that turnover we didn't pull grip oh no we got a socket that big but we'll see what we got those don't even look like the rights well they're not threaded all the way down that's for sure and that one is cross threaded definitely look at this thing leaning at us guys that thing is crooked as can be it's as crooked as a pot County politician there's like three perfectly straight up and then that one's just like ain't nobody got time for that is she in Oklahoma too yep oh oh yeah there's a pound in spark plug man that thing was holding on with literally uh I think somebody did oil and they just set them set him in there because I didn't like hardly turned these red sticking out they weren't down huh maybe whoever had it stored in that shed before me oiled them a freaking hog Molly of the plug getting fancy here I fired up the old uh luck this is a borescope someone had sent out and this is going to be a little easier to show you guys with an extra set of hands so let's go into number one this should be the valves there that should be the exhaust little a little rusty that's the intake oh look at them cylinder walls actually pretty clean down in there there's the intake on number two exhausts over there and that should be the cylinder yep a little bit of hucky puck right in the middle June bug or two May made it in there it's somehow snuck by them two cross threads this is the one that had the cross headed oh spark plug she's a little yeah not the greatest looking condensation going on in the Old Situation so I think that's the one that's going to be giving us problems let's look in the cylinder itself she's pretty Rusty too cylinder cylinder walls are Rusty we might have to mix up some special mix for this one there's number four it's our intake there's our exhaust where's the cylinder that looks pretty good A little bit of surface rust in there but overall uh one two and fours pretty clean number three Mr Cross thread himself has definitely seen better days uh morsky said because of our downdraft carburetor there it makes makes it hard for Stuff obviously to get in there so that kind of makes sense the post I don't like your you know any other newer engine you leave a breather off or something and cramp just it always works its way down in there I think we need to mix up some special special mix for number three you Oklahomans know how to make that special mix that stuff that gets you going in the morning knock the cylinders clean out of it I've always oh that's lacquer thinner that ain't it a little kerosene action a good spray bottle and a little ATF so realistically guys uh us doing a little soaking and what we're gonna do right now it's definitely not going to be enough of you know the soap time this engine would probably need but we're still gonna try we're gonna shoot some Looby Dooby uh down in there we're gonna do about a 50 50 of ATF and kerosene some people say acetone I've always had good luck with this stuff it has a little more than a 50 50. oh oh we're gonna make a mess we're nope seal it in don't worry it's like nothing ever happened that fit in there just beautifully we're always spraying in here sir everywhere well the valves usually aren't going to stick you up it's going to be the Pistons which is over on that side you're getting it we'll snuffle up I guess down there nice and deep Long Reach tip all this is really gonna do is uh make a mess we gotta work around when this engine does not unstick and we have to uh pull the head off this thing so now we just walk around and watch paint dry yeah for about everyone says if we would have soaked it for about three or four months it was three years so we'll be back in three months I'm just gonna spray down these be proactive here a little proactive don't forget the don't forget the plumber strap down I need that one we only got to take the top stuff off well we've been soaking it so she'll probably just bust free now I don't know we may as well call Sonic and tell them to get that chili cheese dog order ready to go she's fun sure the nut didn't just spin I watched the pulley watch watch yeah she's fine I carburetor kit for a 31 Model we got two hours plugs wires we got two hours to have it or we're gonna lose the shot both of them I wouldn't have guessed it ready look at that get any compression I spark plugs for Model A up there I might no I know where to get some though oh yeah we got a stuck exhaust but you might as well just pull that side cover off because that that exhaust one is stuck and you can only get at the intake one so what we gotta do to pull that cover pull the manifold and everything we'll try sneaking it off just so we don't have to ruin them gaskets but I don't know if we can or not because there's a couple behind it but it might are those half inch or so yeah I think so this one right here is our oil drain back tube all the oil from the valve train goes in that runs down that funnel and then goes back into the oil pan it's usually Mr power tool he didn't even want this thing I didn't know you guys had that the bathroom looks funny without the model A in it squeeze it what's the cruddiest you've seen in one of these pretty bad or are they usually pretty clean in here oh these things they're usually pretty clean uh the sludge will build up in the pan and the pans actually have like a like a six or eight inch like an inspection cover you can take off and like clean because these didn't have any oil filters in them so just let everything sludge up at the bottom and then you clean it clean it and roll on she's been cutting fluid but now she's the good stuff so listen right here is our exhaust on our number one cylinder you see there's our intake it's going up now how does that feel on your knuckles you can see these two are going up and down and this one's just stuck up kind of like that gal that I used to date so we're gonna pry that one down and get her Lewis hold on right there so now we know that our intake is open and you never got both valves open at the same time so now we're gonna pry down on this exhaust I haven't unstuck many valves in these things I just don't know what I'm looking at exactly yeah let's try to get a different one then and he's got really light Springs on it so we're just kind of compressing the spring it's not there we go we got that one to go down so now well we got it down I'm gonna put a little bit on it so there right there so now we got that number one intake over let's try to get that number one exhaust so you got something we can slide in there other than my finger there we go get a bigger pry bar foreign [Laughter] you can hear it yeah I could hear it I could see it bill you gotta let us know when we're messing up are you you're the worst supervisor if you're supervising but not paying attention you're in your own world back here huh you're dreaming about small block Chevys my guys right there so use this pin there's a a hole in the timing gear that's when that slides in that's when you know it's that top dead center number one so now we'll drop our distributor in and uh set the rotor to point at number one so we're gonna drop our distributor in and then this bolt right here is what retains it this was drives I think it's the oil pump I don't know what it is but that's what drives it so yeah it's that Notch is off yeah she's a little offset so it'll it should only drop in one way but we're gonna drop it in it's just gonna line right up the first shot like they always do oh yeah we gotta turn it so that ball it out or the whole retaining bolt though you want to restore that thing or what well she's rested you see the pinhole it's fine so now you loosen this screw it's like time them and then you give me that rotor back and you point that up number one with that screw Lewis there's a couple screws loose around here you can that's how you time it you aim it at whatever you want when you set that screw again that's how you set the timing on the model A and then you do have you want to kind of set this in the middle you didn't want to do that there we go popped out of there so that's you can adjust that I'm in the car so we had our distributor cap so I think we got a test continuity because you got four contacts here for all your four cylinders we need to figure out which one is for number one go yep so Western clockwise it's gonna go one three four two can we point that at number one Locker down I'm gonna keep cleaning up on this stuff uh or spark we don't know what we're gonna get so anything that helps that we'll take kind of like our gold stuff in a can any sealant we can get will take more to kiss is gonna slap our little side cover thingy back on oil oil drain tube don't forget that he educated us about that too now rotor here she is paper thin nice little brass Hole uh we'll clean what we can but we gotta be careful with this let's tear into the engine see what's really wrong with it kind of assess what went wrong in this car's life at some point but instead we were able to pull the head off of it get the valves freed up we had quite a few stuck ones uh gave her the gold paint resurfaced custom gasket deck she sealed head job she seal the sealed a couple O-rings on some spark plugs you know we did what we had to do with no Model A Parts on hand uh absolutely zero and yeah she's running uh brakes working clutch working took her around I ain't saying she's ready she would if we put gas in this it would make it to Sonic I have no doubt it'd probably overheat but along you know along the way but anyway would make it he did two laps that's probably far enough to Sonic I guarantee you y'all want to get a chili cheese dog or what we took the someday Model A for down and backs in the backyard which I thought would never ever happen off the factory drivetrain uh now we're not tearing into this build right away um like I said I knew morsky had a lot of knowledge about these cars that I did not have so if there's any time to do a will it run on this thing it's when he's here to help show us uh you know what we don't know along the way where we can learn so I know y'all really didn't see me do a lot of work in this video he kind of took charge and flicked he would build a hot rod today if he could so you know they were handling stuff bill was did you figure out what we were doing nope nope bills still not on page but today is a great day I got to hang out with friends I got to work on the model A we got to take it for a couple hot laps even little hot rod you could tell she was surprised to see it and she even said I can't believe that car is working when's it from the 80s yeah so I'm on the
