what's going on guys so I haven't made a full-fledged holo night video in quite a while and that's simply because I don't really feel like there are many directions left to take it I've heard from other creators and editors how making videos revolving around holo night has become sort of stale recently just because there's really nothing left to talk about but with the highly anticipated silk song being released in what I am personally predicting to be extremely soon like sooner than we think this will likely lead to a lot of people picking up holo night for their very first time so I wanted to take the liberty of compiling not only some general tips but also some very obscure and specific ones that can really enhance your experience with the game I'm rusty and let's go ahead and start rifling these off in hollow nest you're going to find hot spring areas located in small coves that usually have benches next to them and it took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that the hot springs actually refill at your soul gage if you stand in them for long enough I don't think a lot of players catch this one because you have to stand in its area of effect for a short second before its properties start working but there are lots of hot spring areas with benches and hallow night and yes the hot springs can actually be used for something when I first started playing high forewent many opportunities to refill my soul gage simply because I didn't really know that there was any purpose for these hot springs other than giving you an indication that you were in a safe room and just wouldn't be attacked the music ambience would change to something more peaceful and I just I just assumed the hot springs were there to just look nice I know a lot of other HoloNet creators have already sort of hammered this one home and other videos quite a bit but seriously you are probably going to die a lot in boss fights when you first pick up the game and don't worry because this is completely normal and literally everyone goes through it if it makes you feel better at my very first time playing this game was just it was just it was abysmal like I don't even think I reached a dirt mouth before something happened and I panicked and I clumsily just dove into the spiky floor below I don't know I was stupid anyways don't feel bad a lot of the boss fights have these hunched over animations that they usually revert to if they've taken a lot of damage if you're in a boss fight and the boss shows this sign of being weakened or winded from fighting you receiving damage again usually puts them back on the offensive in so it's probably in your best interest to not go 100% balls-to-the-wall and just continue attacking them because you aren't doing any extra damage by attacking them in this state so instead I would just take that opportunity to just look at the status of your night and maybe take some time to heal yourself if need be I like to start charging a nail-art attack here when the boss is in this winded state because I know my next attack is gonna hit so I might as well get some huge damage out of it this one is a little more complicated for newer players but it's an invaluable skill you can learn when exploring how honest down slashing on enemy's spikes and whatnot can give you a little extra hop and this maneuver can sometimes reveal secret places or help you get to other out of reach items the best early game example I can think of is the grub in the Forgotten crossroads place behind a trio of platforms that are completely covered in spikes a lot of newer players kind of trick themselves into thinking I'll come back there's probably a powerup or a charm or something later that allows me to bypass this but it really is as simple as just hitting the spikes if you've gone far enough to unlock the double jump ability down slashing enemies also resets that second jump which can be especially helpful for tricky platforming plus the ability to pull off a quadruple jump just kinda makes you feel like a badass exercise patience pay attention to your timing and victory will be yours just don't try to Pogo on the thorns because that'll kill you slashing upwards in certain areas with thin floors will also mean you can likely hit enemies through the ceiling above you this is especially effective if you've obtained the mark of pride charm because on certain spaces you can just jump to ceiling height and start up slashing foes that are above you and they'll probably get hit you can also do the same strategy with a certain spell you get much later on in the game and its hitbox can permeate walls completely while hitting whatever is on the other side of it for massive damage and you can do this all while under the safety of cover some spouse can also travel through walls completely which makes it a great method of dealing with dangerous enemies in Crampton enclosed spaces you can use the walls and just the geometry of the level design to provide cover while you blast spells at enemies from a much safer area geo isn't well it's important but it isn't that important you can be fooled into thinking geo will be a very valuable commodity throughout the kingdom and during the first few hours of gameplay it does kind of seem that a lot of the larger more important items you're going to want can just be bought from a vendor but there are lots of other ways to farm geo that don't involve repeating areas over and over again just for extra cash you can free grubs you have the gathering swarm charm if you need it and most importantly you will find tons of relics that you can sell to another vendor you've probably yet to meet but if you have met him you'll know exactly what I'm talking about when I say geo isn't too big of a deal in hollow Knight especially once you get into the late game areas because by that time there's a good chance you will have likely just bought everyone out as a lot of the shopkeepers in Hollow 9 have a surprisingly limited inventory there are secrets abound in Halo Nest and most of them just like any good secrets are hidden behind these breakable walls here they're easy enough to see by themselves but once you get a little further underground and biomes begin getting kind of dark it can be difficult to make out exactly where the breakable walls are if you find a room that seems deceptively empty or kind of cryptic just start hitting the perimeters of the room 90% of the time there's a breakable wall or an extra area you can uncover by simply just hitting things the audio feedback of hitting a solid wall versus a breakable one is vastly different and you'll be able to tell pretty much immediately whether or not you are hitting a breakable surface and this tip kind of goes a little past breaking walls too if you feel like you can interact with an object like in any way just just hit it and see what happens it took me over a year to figure out that the platforms in the Crystal peak for instance could be rotated manually by hitting them someone in the comments pointed this out to me in a previous video and it honestly it made me feel like a massive dumbass so I'm I'm relaying this to you so you don't have to suffer from that same embarrassment it takes some practice but you can dream nail just about any living organism in the game and that includes enemies dream nailing enemies gives you a huge soul bonus and also knocks the smaller ones backward quite a bit giving you a window of time you can use to get out of the way I like to practice this on slower enemies like the mistakes in the soul sanctum or even enemies that are kinda fast but have really predictable linear move patterns like the pill bugs other good enemies to practice this on are any type of crawling enemy that never usually leave the ground such as the crawl it's the shadow creepers in the Bazin or the pill flips in the waterways this is a trick that's gonna save you tons of trouble much later on in a certain Coliseum area and without revealing too much you do also get a charm from another mid game NPC that makes the dream nail animation a lot faster and easier to time you can also read the thoughts of the enemies you dream nail as well but a lot of the infected enemies don't really have much on their mind though expectedly if you have a collection of these weird items called rancid eggs that you have no idea what to do with then well you're not alone rancid eggs may not be coveted by a majority of the kingdom and for a while I thought it was just another collectible you could trade in for geo or something but there's actually a merchant in dirt mouth named confessor Gigi that considers them to be quite delectable and according to her they make really good meals okay sure sure Gigi you're gonna need a simple key to access her dugout but if you have some rancid eggs you're willing to let go of Gigi will summon you our shade from a location that you previously died and bring it into the room with you where you can defeat it hear and recollect all the Gio you lost upon death the benefits this NPC gives you are particularly useful if let's say you end up dying in a foreign place that's really far away from safety or maybe you've lost your shade in a just a really inconvenient hard-to-reach spot where you might die in the process of recovering it if you want to maximize your DPS try comboing nail and spell attacks when catching an enemy off guard if a boss appears wounded for example and your health is full my personal favorite to go to combo is a great slash nail art and then followed that up with vengeful spirit if you press B immediately after executing the slash the spell should fire off fairly quickly late-game hallow nest has a lot of faster enemies and bosses that don't leave themselves open to attack nearly as often as others so when they are open you really have to cram in as much damage as you can fit into that small window and a great impractical way to do this is by chaining together melee and spell attacks for instant high damage if you have the soul for it a slash and a spell is almost always quicker and more effective than two consecutive slashes and of course there are charms that accentuate these combos as well so be sure to pay attention to those when you get to them using lifeblood cocoons can be tricky because any health you accumulate from them is reset after sitting on a bench to refill your health lifeblood cocoons are really valuable in certain spots and in some instances they're extremely close to other boss battles and places where you might need them most I find it's generally good to go after lifeblood cocoons as part of a preparation phase for a boss you're about to fight because an extra two or three masks of health that stave off the worry of healing for sometime can an extremely powerful advantage that soul that you would have used to heal when losing health can instead be used offensively for high damage spells there are only that much more useful against faster bosses with really short windows of time for healing because at least until your extra health runs out that's simply just less attention you have to devote to healing and more attention you can devote to actually dealing damage and defeating the boss if a shopkeeper still has items in their inventory move to the right of them or behind them and the prompt will usually change from shop to listen this is an extremely small thing and it's meant less for getting the most out of your gameplay and a little more for lore aficionados that like being enamored with the world they're exploring I kind of skipped out on a lot of dialogue my first time through just because I thought the only way you could interact with vendors was to just buy them out first and that's well that's just not true yeah yeah I know go ahead I'm a dumbass I didn't know it okay if you get far enough into the fungal wastes and defeat the area boss without upgrading your nail and or realizing such a thing as possible at this point you may be tempted to head into the following area with no upgrades I'm just gonna go ahead and say this as bluntly as I can yeah don't don't do this don't do this you will die and you're going to die with a very false sense of how difficult the game is because you're basically continuing into one of hollow nights in game areas and I would wager you're doing it without any nail or soul upgrades of any kind turning back and revisiting an area you can't make progress in is always an option but the game seldom ever tells you that upfront thus one of the things I would prioritize is first finding the nail Smith in the city of tears and have him just repair and soup up that rusty iron pencil you've been carrying around with you vengeful spirit the starting spell the knight gets after defeating the false Knight does three times the base as a standard hit with your nail this is what makes soul catcher a great early charm in my opinion and you totally shouldn't sleep on it a lot of newer players tend to lean towards being hesitant to use spells simply because they feel like they're going to need to heal more often than they really need to so if that's something you're worried about then the soul catchers benefits can be a massive help to you you aren't going to be running into any nail upgrades for quite a while so I'd recommend trying out of the vengeful spirit in combat and just getting a feel for how to use it it can 2-shot most of the standard enemies in the Forgotten crossroads and even a couple areas after it when it comes to early game it's potential is honestly pretty hard to argue against upon your death you will be sent back to a bench with a broken soul gauge at the top left and this took me longer to figure out than it probably should have so I just figured I'd publicize the information to another player who's just now getting their feet wet that cracked soul gauge is not just an aesthetic effect on the UI it actually prevents you from completely filling your soul gauge and while this is active you're only going to be able to replenish 2/3 of your normal amount which might not sound like a lot but that one extra mask you're going to have to forego when healing honestly makes a huge difference in earlier parts of the game assuming you haven't found any soul upgrades you're only going to be able to heal twice at a time before needing to refuel again and the only means of repairing your soul gauge is to find and kill your shade but not to worry because the soul gauge only cracks once so if you die trying to recover your shade you'll still only be forgoing one third of your normal soul capacity and Rusty's 15th and final tip arguably the most important one to your hollow not experience guys don't show off there are no heroes and hallow nest just just sit on the bench there's no reason you have to bypass it it refills your health it updates your map it gives you the opportunity to switch terms if you need it just just sit on it okay I just sit on the goddamn bench we are kind of sitting on the eve of a big new release here very soon and I feel like Halle Knight is going to be getting a massive wave of newer players once that happens so if there's a specific tip that helped you out a lot in a certain section then please feel free to discuss some of your own advice for newcomers in the comments I only gave you 15 but honestly there's so much more thanks for tuning into the forge I'm rusty and if you're new to hollow Knight just please stick with it because it hit kits pretty intense I'll see you guys in the next video peace
