[Music] [Applause] hi everyone I haven't filmed in forever since August or September and it's currently February it's been such a long year we're more than halfway done it's just like I didn't I filmed a lot in this summer because I had a lot of time but I don't have a lot of time anymore and I don't know how like people on YouTube do it like the teachers on YouTube they have like amazing time management because I can't figure it out I can't do it so I'm gonna put together a few things but I came in my classroom and this is what it looked like now all the desks were over there and obviously like they're all supposed to be in the middle of the floor all my rugs were gone I think obviously they're cleaning but yeah and I'm putting that together yeah okay well I'm gonna get started and this is a mess this is this place is a mess [Music] yeah I would pay extra for it to come pre-made probably food do that great any other teachers like Drake so I think I found a new talent carpentry putting things together furniture builder those type of you know areas I think I'm pretty great up took way longer than expected and I don't think I put the wheels on right but you know we'll work with it and I'm going to put book pins on here cheese on here and on here and then I'm gonna fill these with other things too and I'm gonna get rid of that thing over there so or the years from my first year teaching even though it was two years ago to my third year of teaching I have changed so many things and I've learned a lot of tips and tricks along the way things that I would have never thought of my first year of teaching that I wish someone had told me or also things that just work for you like things I say in this video might not work for you but they work for me but I know watching other youtube videos I've gotten a lot of different like tips and tricks and I have taken things from other videos or Instagram or things like that and use them kind of in my own classroom and maybe like tweaked it a little bit so this video is about 15 tips and tricks on how to survive the school year so this is my first tip on my desk I have a huge calendar and it's February right now so obviously fun February but at the beginning of the year I put all the different dates and things that we need on there and then throughout the year and throughout the month I put different things on there too that come up so as you see February is really written in a lot and it just really helps me with scheduling and reminding me things that I need to do you can get these at Target Walmart Amazon really wherever so this is to number two and originally when I got this I hated it but now I love it as you can see there are little buckets or little drawers that you can put little things in and I didn't know what I was gonna do with it at first but like you see I have staples in there I have paperclips in there I have a resource in there I have pushpins in there I have all different things in there and there is 16 of them I believe and they're super accessible I just put it behind my desk and it's perfect you can get these at Michael's so this tip might be my favorite out of them all it has been a life changer for me this year water bottles were spilling and I just had no idea where to put them so I used an old shoe rack an old plastic shoe rack and they fit in perfectly and I use really really strong command hooks I use the moments of bellcore on the back and it's perfect it's only fallen once this year so that's not too bad but the kids put their water bottles in it in the morning and that's part of their morning routine and it just works out perfectly I would highly recommend doing something like this ok so I'm a person that's tried every single turn and system there is on the planet I've had a bucket I've had like slots I've had drawers nothing ever works for me because the papers always just pile up so I have three of these and they just hang on hooks and their fire folders fought fire file folders and I just say turn in on them so each kid has their own so they see where they are and then they pass in their thing so if I want to see what a certain child has passed in or things like that I can just take out theirs and grade it and I can just take it off and I can fold it up like that so I literally just put the fastener on and it's super easy to bring home it's not like a big bolt go far it's been my best like turning system so and look I just can just hook it back on and I usually take them home like a couple nights a week but then I can see okay so everyone has passed in blah blah blah or you know this person passed in a ton of work but this person doesn't look like they've passed in a lot so I can just see like by their names like I can see this person has only passed in one paper and this person has passed in five so I should probably check with that person if have a lot of their unfinished work folder at things like that when I grade I can do them all at once because if you do like a turn and Bend then they're all like all the names are scattered and then it's easier to to put in mailboxes because they're stacked like if I have an Abigail okay like all Abigail's paper is in the bottom and then Joe's papers are on the top so it's really easy to put in mailboxes too so that is a tip ship trick and tip that has worked for me this year so this is a stamp that I made in the beginning of the year and I can just chuck off things in there writing journal that they need to work on instead of writing it so I can just check them off what they need to do and goals to work on so I can show you what it looks like in an actual journal so in addition to the stamp they have these expectations for their journal and it just reminds them what they have to do for their morning work and what I expect of them and they can always go back to them so I can put in the goals right there so she had to work on her spelling and I'll have a little conference with her too but that's just an example of what it would look like so here is another students journal and he really had to work on details and handwriting so we've had a conference about that and then I'll give them about a week to work on the goals and he still needed to work on his details and handwriting but he got better with that and better with his Tetris as well so while I was reading and I tried to come up with another goal and right here it says ending marks so if you can look at it closely I can show you this it's just one whole big paragraph and there's no ending marks so you really needed to work on that so tip number six would definitely be to invest in good headphones those headphones I'm holding up right there are amazing they're super durable they've lasted super long those are okay they're not as great but I can give you the link to the ones that are really durable the ones that I'm holding up right there they've lasted three years those it's not so much and I've had kids donate some but I really would invest in good headphones so tip number seven would be stickers stickers stickers always have them in the back and I always have a variety so those are like dogs wearing pinatas I don't know I have food ones I have princess ones I have smiley face ones I have dinosaur ones I have Pokemon ones I have all different sorts of them and the Minecraft ones go over really well but I'm gonna just show you in the next clip of why I have them you would be shocked what kids will do for stickers it spits a sticker for Minecraft it's a sticker for frozen so I liked at the beginning of the year get theme stickers and if they're in a reading group or something or something else then I notice that they're doing a really good job then I say oh my gosh this group has done such an amazing job today I think everyone gets a sticker so I don't do it like all the time but I do it enough where the kids know like all sticker like I really want that I really want to do good and guided reading today or math groups or whatever it is so stickers are so well it can be expensive but if it's a reward a little reward for you know a student doing a good job or if you see even like if I see someone doing a really good job and sometimes I'll just go put a sticker on their nametag or I'll just hand it to them and they can put it wherever so I love to have different types of stickers I like to have like minecraft stickers for tonight stickers frozen stickers like weird smelly ones those are those are the ones I got them the smelly ones we had ones that smelled like chocolate I thought they smell disgusting but all the kids wanted it and even if you're having a tough day with them like even in a guided reading group or something you could say oh my gosh you know if everyone does a really good job today and guided reading I got some new chocolate stickers and I really want you guys to have them like I just I I need to get rid of them because they're smelling up my room and I need you guys to have them so kind of just like play up the sticker thing and also when you find out your kids interests then get those type of stickers so for example like I have two kids that need some motivation that really like Minecraft and fortnight so yeah I'll pay three bucks for a whole pack of stickers in Minecraft and if that motivates them go get as many stickers as you want to or frozen stickers or troll stickers or like weird I have weird stickers with like ducks on them that girls in my class are obsessed with ducks and penguins so yep I'll get some dollar-store penguin dollar-store duck and if they can get a sticker for doing a great job perfect it's a great motivator I know probably in upper grades it's not that like probably like when you get to like fourth fifth six but definitely my computer just turned back on but definitely like kindergarten through second even third I would say that stickers are a big motivator so this I've been using for a while so I just had the look what's happening this stays up here all year but these are what I use for my schedule if you go got them at Lakeshore and they're magnetic and you can also wipe them off they're dry erase so I can leave a lot for the day like morning work and morning meeting usually say the same if we had a lot of Valentine's Day stuff on Friday and then we had vacation so it looks a little bit different but I got this idea from one of my teacher friends so instead of always asking toward the bathroom she just puts a little restroom sign near it so then the kids can know okay so during morning work I can go to the bathroom no morning meaning I can't go I don't say activity I can go snack I can go karaoke and finish we don't usually do karaoke that was a special thing right before vacation lunch and recess is supposed to be I don't know why this is all messed up I just came in lunch amuse us they can't go during time ten minutes silent reading and menial blah blah blah so it looks like this and so they can see what times they can go to the bathroom obviously it's an emergency they can go another tip and trick is definitely having hand signals for anything well not anything but a lot so the most used are the bathroom so I know if they need to go the bathroom is a one drink it to this is perfect because if they have a comment and they do this I say oh no no comments right now but if they have a question they raise their hand and put five fingers up this is an important one too for emergency so if it's not a bathroom time and they put this up then I know then they really need to go to the bathroom these are perfect I know a lot of people have different hand signals so this has saved my life comment this has saved my life because if they put this up I'll say oh no comments right now we'll wait until later do you have any questions and that's when they put their hand up but you know when so if you don't have something like this and they raise their hand and you're like what's 6 plus 8 and you're thinking you're like oh they're gonna say 14 like that kid shoots up his hand and they're gonna say 14 and you're like yes Johnny and they're like yesterday my dog he threw up and then we had to take him to the vet and then my mom came home and then she couldn't make us dinner and it just could go on for eight hours so this perfect and then also if they do this and they start going on with a comment I'll say oh is that a comment and they'll go a kind of a question and a comment I said no which one is it and they'll say it's a comment and I'll say oh okay so make sure you do this and one I want comments I want you to go like this later so it's very good classroom management skills and you know those kids that just love to tell stories they love to tell what they ate for breakfast they'd love to tell us something that happened when they were three and usually I'll kind of dedicate a time for this or else I do have any questions or comments so if I say do we have any questions they kind of know but questions or comments I have to be careful because all of them will shoot up this so I'll say oh okay so I need five super important comments something comments about what we're doing today and then usually a lot of the hands go down because if I say comments about what we're doing today usually they were thinking of their dog that threw up and so if I do like this then it's usually much better okay so because they did this to my desks I can't really get in but over here I have a bin and in one of them can't really see it but there's sporks and knives and spoons no not knives forks and spoons so in the bottom and one of their there's forks and the spoons but like right here I have glue I have Expo markers I have dice that's right there I have who has games but I've noticed like that first couple years of teaching I would you assume that they bring us a spork a fork and a spoon a fork and spoon with them but they never do so it's always good to have forks and spoons and instead of like going in a closet and going to get them it's nice to have just a drawer to have them so the kids know where they are they can go get them you can buy a hundred at the beginning of the year so they don't have to keep going back to the cafeteria or going in your closet so that's something that has worked out completely well for me this year they some literally like because all these desks here imma literally gonna have to go under here like what ha ha so right here I have my adhesive tool so I have just a bunch of things that I use like mount tabs and tape and magnetic things and double-sided tape and things like that and then I have all my labels right here so things I can put on book fins things I've gotten from Target a bunch of labels these oh these are like dry erase labels so oh and you know what look here's my spoon and forks I'm literally and literally like underneath okay okay okay I think you're not too mature but I do have a whole drawer for adhesive stuff and labels because I feel like those get lost easily so I can just pull it out and I know those we're all my labels are and then the bottom all my adhesive stuff so tape I'll really just tape like double-sided tape just all forms of tape I should really put on there forum sub tape but I just have adhesive stuff and then the labels have been like perfect because usually like in the beginning of the year you have everything set up and then from time to time you'll need a label and it's just blowing in your closet and digging for them so it's better to have that this is like this has worked out perfectly for me this year it's all things that were in right there that like I would have to go get or I wouldn't want the kids going in there because it was hard to find so now it's perfectly accessible for that over there okay yep I need to do this over oh I had my best friend in the whole world here my personal laminator and it's on right now I just laminate stuff so let me turn that off but I got that well my mom actually got me the Scotch one for Christmas or my birthday I'm not sure that this has been a lifesaver and I store sheets in here these sheets are actually like amazingly thick and I like to use these more than the school laminator but it's perfect it heats up in about like five minutes I know the school eliminators heat up like it takes like 20 minutes so that is super good to have in just a high high light just to laminate like little things that I feel bad turning the school laminator on four so if it's a little name tag will not name tags but like little things to label things like that um I feel bad turning the school laminator on and it's super helpful look if I'm on a prep so I can just go turn that on and that's if that's what I need to do instead of going all the way down to the copier room turning it on which takes 20 minutes and then putting it through so it's just I love having a laminator I would highly suggest getting one recently got a new bag so instead of lugging everything this I think this is a scrapbooking bag okay this is all the candy that I got for Valentine's Day but it's perfect so it you can just roll it it's like a suitcase but like a cooler version so in the front you can put your laptop in here you can put all your books did I bring home or all like grading papers and stuff and then where's the my hair and then look it I have a bunch of pencils and things like that in here so this has been amazing on my back and so I was having back problems and shoulder problems I'm 25 years old should not be having these issues so I asked for this for Christmas and my mom got this for me and so it's perfect I just look at this wheeling into success and I just go like this it's literally perfect it has helped my shoulder is in my back up so much and it holds a ton so yeah I've switched to that and it's been a life changer you know when you make a label right and you print it and you think it's gonna like work perfectly and you think it's gonna fit yeah it never does so what I do is I save all my labels and so I'll know like letter stamps okay I know this goes on a certain thing and I know this is the right size because I would have saved it as the right size so all these things I have saved so if I ever need to make another one or something for that specific like drawer or something I know the size is so like these are all my jobs things these I actually just made today and they're going over there they're gonna go on there so it's just it's literally what is it called it's literally called labels and stuff so throughout the year what I need labels I'll just come on this is everything from my morning meeting so if I need to print something or it's like over there I don't know if you can see this is human so those are all over there and they're laminated but sometimes as you can see they get a little dirty so if I need a new one I don't have to worry well I just have to print it and laminate it again but I know exactly what size it was so these have worked out perfect place so this is something I didn't know if it was gonna work but it actually worked out perfect so this is the community markers and colored pencils and I did it all by color in the beginning of the year and I was like that's gonna last six days but it's actually been perfect so I have all the markers up here I have highlighters right here skinny markers right here and I think probably next year I'll just like combine the fat markers and the skinny markers so here's the issue they're the colored pencils have been very sparse so at the beginning and there were all different colored pencils as you see we don't really need white so there's a lot of weight left but there's basically like this was supposed to be green and all this yeah and they have in their caddies right here they do have these RMS but they have crayons and they're supposed to have you know okay this is bothering me they're all whatever we'll fix that later but in their caddies they do have scissors they have glue crayons this is not supposed to be in there and that's okay that's why there we go yellow and they have marker no they don't have markers they have one is supposed to be pencils when I supposed to be scissors glue crayons the sharpener supposed to be in one and colored pencils so a lot of the times what they'll do is it'll come over and they'll get colored pencils and it's not their fault like they just they put them back in here so I think that's why those have been depleted because you can't really tell if a color pencil supposed to be an arrow they're they're not supposed to have markers in there so it's easier for me to go around in the Caddy's and you're like oh that's not supposed to be in there and thought to go in there so yeah hopefully I can get some more videos it's hard to do it during this school year just cousin so busy and this is only my second year here so I still have a lot to learn here and I still have a lot that I'm working through and like making sure I'm all set with the curriculum and things like that so filming hasn't been like my number one priority but I'm in the middle of my masters I'm getting my masters of Education in reading so further down the road I can be a literacy specialist and I have to film a video for that of me teaching so that will give me an excuse to film so to be honest I completely forgot to film an ending because I got hungry and I wanted to go get some Mo's and that's what I did so if you want to like comment and subscribe from our videos or have any questions that'd be awesome thanks guys bye
