okay so we know what you're thinking the best shark species is one that is hidden in the ocean because no one wants to come face to face with it right yeah sure but knowledge is power from a species that looks like it has a saw on its face to the largest in the world here are 15 of the rarest shark species hidden in the ocean number 15 angel sharks angel and shark are two words that most people wouldn't put in the same sentence but scientists clearly thought it was necessary this species of shark is found in the mediterranean sea and northeast atlantic and is the second most threatened of all shark species out of all sharks to pay a visit while you're out surfing an angel shark will be near the bottom of the list the angel shark is also a type of flat shark which means it's dorso ventrally flattened that certainly helps them camouflage against their prey and any threats they lie in wait at the bottom of the ocean then ambush their dinner with little time for them to react believe it or not this shark species is also nocturnal and they don't have the best life cycle the young grow inside the female shark and she gives birth to up to 25 live pups they seem to keep getting caught up in fishing gear and habitat degradation is thought to have played a role as well that's why they are clearly one of the rarest shark species hidden in the ocean before we go on we have a cool challenge for y'all it'll take about five seconds to complete let's make a deal just leave a like on this video smash that subscribe button and hit the notification bell and you will get 10 years of amazing luck and fortune try it it actually works now it's time for the star topic okay so we've gotta talk about the elephant in the room here the shark that has more than one head and it's not even a two-headed shark or even a three-headed shark it has five four at the front and one at the back as if being bitten by one head wasn't scary enough this image is from the film five-headed shark obviously which might make you think that it's not real but could it have been what do you think we've heard that scientists think it might have existed before comment down below with the hashtag star topic and let us know your opinion in relation to what we just showed on screen with that said let's keep things moving number 14 horn shark as anyone who has had a close encounter with sharks will know they tend to enjoy roaming around the open ocean the horn shark is a little bit different and you'd be more likely to spot this critter lurking around in shallow water crawling along the sandy surface feeding on sea urchins and crustaceans porn sharks are not huge fans of swimming they're also pretty terrible at it which might be why it's not their preferred method of getting around instead they use their fins to crawl along rocks and spend much of their time hiding under legs and in caves horn sharks come out of hiding at night to feed on anything they can find along the ocean floor and they then returned to their hidey hole once more because people used to catch them to use their horn as jewelry and accidentally in nets the three-foot horn shark population is in decline it also doesn't help the cause that their spiral egg cases which have one pup in each egg casing take up to nine months to hatch kind of an idiot species has a nine month gestation period number 13 great hammerhead shark it's the shark of your nightmares imagine going diving and finding yourself face to face with a 20-foot 990 pound great hammerhead shark out in the open ocean you'd pass out from fear then and there it doesn't help either that they are an aggressive predator and not one to have mercy on anything that slightly resembles a delicious snack aka humans great hammerhead sharks live in tropical waters from coastal to the open ocean and they are considered highly vulnerable to extinction as the name suggests their head is in the shape of a hammer and they have a single eye at either end to help guide the way their heads also have electrical receptors to help find their prey and they are rarely the prey of any other sea creature due to their size that doesn't stop them from being endangered though humans cause over 90 percent of hammerhead shark deaths don't feel too sorry for him though because the hammerhead shark is ruthless it will eat its own species if it has to and they use their heads to pin down their dinner they're certainly not a shark you'd want to come face to face with in the open ocean that's for sure number 12 basking shark ready to see not only one of the rarest sharks in the world but also one of the biggest and ugliest the basking shark well and truly ticks that box look at this two of them swimming one behind the other this awful looking sea creature is the second largest fish in the ocean grown up to around 33 feet long it has five gill slits in a circle head and a moon shaped tail with 6.5 foot fence and a pointed snout if that wasn't weird enough the basking shark's mouth can open up to 3 feet wide there are plenty of oddities to point out when you see one for yourself they have more teeth than any other species of shark on earth and their liver is so huge that it makes up a quarter of its body weight and gives it the ability to float even though the basking shark looks like a big bad wolf of the marine world they're pretty much a gentle giant they partake in passive feeding which is where they swim with their mouth open to see what flows in mainly it's plankton but they can filter around 2 000 tons of water in as little as an hour if you're looking for a basking shark you'll find them in most parts of the world they don't discriminate between frigid and warm waters from new zealand all the way to iceland and beyond number 11 saw shark if you happen to be hanging out around the northwest and the southeast atlantic ocean or even the west indian or the pacific ocean then you may just be lucky enough to spot a saw shark lucky or unfortunate we'll let the shark decide to be honest not too much is known about the sawshark other than that it has a long saw-like rostrum lined with razor-sharp teeth they also have flat heads and are quite a petite shark but that doesn't mean they're small they still grow up to nearly three feet long and have around two dozen teeth to get to know you a bit better with they're most often found around the bahamas cuba and florida and they are thought to be endangered or threatened while it's not known how they eat what they eat or who eats them it is known that humans are the biggest threat it's not that uncommon for a saw shark to end up in a deep water fisheries operation by accident as a result an action plan is being installed to help conserve their future number 10 common thresher shark learning about new marine animals is quite exciting and the common thresher shark is no exception if any type of shark is gonna hold your attention it's this one just check out that tale the shark itself is long enough at up to 20 feet but then its tail can grow up to the length of its body as well because this species is so rare it took until 2013 for researchers to finally figure out what its tail was for it basically uses it like a lasso it speeds towards a school of fish uses its fins to come to a screeching halt then throws its body forward while flexing the base of its tail the tail tip catapults over its head at over 60 miles per hour walloping whatever fish it manages to get all the thresher shark has to do then is swim around and swallow up the bits of fish it annihilated there are three species of thresher shark all of which are vulnerable they only reach maturity for breeding at around 8 to 14 years old which gives them a six year window to breed before dying as they only produce up to four pups at once they aren't able to bounce back from bycatch fisheries and accidental killings number 9 mako shark the mako shark is an endangered species but once you hear more about them you might be wondering if that's actually for the best at a minimum you'll be thankful they live too far out in the ocean to cause much grief for humans mako sharks are monsters of the ocean there it is right there right there right there if they were humans they'd have no friends they are apex predators that will terrify any beginner fisher into cutting their line as soon as they caught a glimpse of them they just don't give up and it's that fighting spirit that has put them at the top of the food chain they are warm blooded and this means they work harder faster and with more intelligence than any other shark species in the ocean they also have rapid digestion so they have far more energy to keep eating and fighting than cold-blooded species even in freezing cold oceans they are 35 degrees fahrenheit warmer than their surroundings the mako shark travels all around the world but tend to prefer to go places where bluefish and mackerel are with all that oily fishy goodness they are then set to travel at speeds of over 40 miles per hour jumping 30 feet in the air to secure their prey we don't know about you but we're in no hurry to come face to face with this 10-foot 300-pound shark anytime soon number eight zebra shark well this is awkward that shark clearly has spots so isn't it a leopard shark rather than a zebra shark you'd think so but there's a reason it suits its name this giant shark which grows up to around 12 feet long starts life as a small dark brown shark with yellow stripes once they mature they lose their stripes and gain black dots instead sounds to us like they've got a bit of an identity crisis not only that but they are also one of the rarest sharks in the world and that's on us due to the demand for zebra shark meat and their fins for shark fin soup they have been overfished they are classed as endangered on the iucn red list but populations are thriving in australian waters unlike other man-eating sharks that make you swim away in terror the zebra shark is unlikely to do that they tend to live around 200 feet below the ocean surface and get tired quite quickly you won't find them swimming around but more likely napping in small crevices and grabbing the occasional bite to eat they are well and truly the homer simpsons of the shark world number 7 whale shark the name says everything you need to know about the whale shark it is massive this species of shark lives in tropical oceans around the world and grows up to around 40 feet long if its length wasn't enough to amaze you then its heft will be at 11 tons it weighs as much as 11 polar bears or three times as heavy as a hippopotamus they're no slim jim that's for sure fortunately for mankind though their size isn't accompanied by an aggressive temper like the hammerhead shark or mako shark they are a gentle giant of the ocean and live on plankton which they travel around the world to find they'll even dive down to around 3 300 feet to find the best food to sustain their bulk now that's dedication even though we know a little bit about the whale shark what we don't know is their reproductive habits they give birth to live pups but they are rarely seen at the moment they are endangered but thanks to fishing protections put in place that may change in the future number six nurse shark we're a little confused and heartbroken by the nurse shark when we hear nurse we think of warmth kindness and compassion but then you pair it with a word like shark and we're conflicted is it a nice shark in short no the nurse shark grows up to around 14 feet long and has a mouth filled with thousands of tiny sharp teeth while they don't actively set out to harm humans they're not morally against it they have been known to bite divers who accidentally step on them you might be wondering how you'd accidentally step on a shark but it's easy to understand with the nurse shark they are bottom dwellers and move slowly along the ground as a result they're easy to miss they feed on squid shrimp and fish and have tail fins that grow up to around a quarter of their length unlike other sharks that are quite rough they are soft to the touch if you're gonna stumble across this shark anywhere it's most likely gonna be in the eastern pacific ocean and the western atlantic ocean they prefer warm shallow water fortunately their numbers are stable for now still human activities are certainly not making it easy for them to remain so number five goblin shark if you don't like looking at anything terrifying or gross then turn off this video now we're about to show you what nightmares are made of a goblin shark which is very very cool the goblin shark is not going to win any beauty pageants unless of course it ate all the other contestants it has a long snout covered in sensing organs and it tends to lurk in the deepest darkest depths of the ocean and for that we're thankful because just look at it gross it's not even just its weird nose that senses electric fields in the water that makes this shark genuinely awful it has pink purple and gray skin bright blue edges and what looks like tacky slimy skin if there's anything that would make you wake up drenched in sweat after a nightmare it's the goblin shark fortunately they live well away from most people and they only really live on fish squid and crustaceans they are also extremely rare and date back around 125 million years if you ask anyone that's fearful of sharks they would probably say that's long enough number four thrilled shark if you happen to be exploring the deep dark tropical waters around the world then you might just stumble across the frilled shark frill shark is one of the most bizarre looking creatures on the planet at first it might be hard to tell if it's a frilled shark it might even be challenging to know if it's a shark at all but once you see its strange seven foot eel-like body and frilly gills you'll surely make a positive id the frilled shark is nearly extinct or so researchers think they can't know for sure though for they live so far down in the ocean that they can't establish a headcount what they do know for sure though is that the frilled shark is an active predator they swallow their prey whole even large squid and fish and they have several rows of long teeth that can snag the bodies of their unsuspecting victims frilled sharks also give birth to live young and don't have too many enemies their biggest threat is us when we accidentally catch them while out looking for other fish fortunately no one actively seeks to hunt down the frilled shark so their numbers are most likely gonna remain stable number three mouth shark we know what you're thinking mega mouth shark ah that can't be good can they eat a human hole are they gonna take over the ocean it's not looking likely for they've only been seen in the wild a few times and only 60 have been captured and observed the mega mouth shark is a rare shark species that lives in tropical waters around the world it grows up to around 2 700 pounds and 16 feet long and is one of three species of filter-feeding sharks but let's address the most obvious thing about this shark its mouth as the name of the shark suggests the mouth is well mega it grows up to around four feet across which is one of the largest mouths on any shark in existence they also leave it open at all times so that they can swim around and enjoy a nice continuous supply of plankton aside from how rare they are you're unlikely to see this shark in person anyway they live around 15 000 feet below the ocean's surface and only come near the surface at night they will ultimately live their entire life in the dark number two bird beak dogfish the bird beak dogfish sounds like it's some kind of hybrid animal almost like they took a bird attached it to a dog and then i don't know taped it onto a fish to be fair though it does look like it's a bit of a mash up maybe that other shark is that um a smaller one than the one eye it has a long snout grooved dorsal fin spines and tentacles in the shape of pitchforks if we were to name it anything we'd come up with the scientific name of confused the bird beak dogfish lives in the pacific ocean and the atlantic ocean but most people will never come across one in their lifetime they live up to 4 700 feet below the ocean surface so it's not like they're gonna appear when you're out for a quick dip they also grow up to around 3.6 feet long but males tend to be a lot smaller than females fortunately for those that are fearful of sharks even if you did see one you wouldn't be at great risk they prefer to eat shrimps scaly dragon fish and hatchet fish humans don't typically appear on the menu number one ghost shark ghost sharks have been around for about 300 million years so you would think that scientists would know everything about them he's so creepy quite the opposite is true which might be one of many reasons why they go by the name of ghost shark they almost don't exist at all they live far below the ocean's surface at around 6 700 feet and remain as mysterious today as they did when they were first discovered they have dead looking eyes pale skin and they tend to be more fish than shark oh and one more thing they have genitals on their head that's right they have a retractable on their head which scientists realized when they found them in the northern hemisphere for the first time they later learned that they also have another set of appendages on the front of their pelvic fins the females lay eggs in leathery egg cases ghost sharks that also go by the name of chimeras have smooth skin and can range in color from brown to black they grow up to around 5 feet long and have strange teeth when you compare them to other sharks while other sharks have replaceable teeth the ghost shark has just three pairs of permanent grinding plates we hate to ask but have you come face to face with any of these species and have you seen any in person we're hoping you haven't also check out our other cool stuff showing up on screen right now see you next time
