sharks are one of the most revered killing machines on earth we've all seen them in films we've all read about them in books we hear new stories all the time of shark attacks across the globe but did you know that there are animals that have existed and still exist that could take a shark down from a prehistoric reptile to a modern-day animal pack of assassins here are 15 animals that could defeat a shark number 15 crocodiles bill gates's 2014 infographic reveals that sharks only kill on average 10 people a year the crocodile however kills a staggering 1 000 human beings a year the first reason in everyone's head is well of course humans live on land like crocodiles while sharks live in the ocean a place where humans are less likely to be but there are other more terrifying reasons crocodiles are ruthless hunters that will consider humans as food without a second thought they'll pretty much eat anything and everything even fellow crocs sharks on the other hand don't seem to like the taste of our flesh and seem to be very scared of humans altogether if you notice that a crocodile is just eaten please don't assume that it won't attack you because for the simple reason of being in its territory it can and will harm or kill you they can be submerged under the water for up to two hours waiting for the right moment to strike dragging you into the water to kill you there with all that in mind if you ever encounter a croc run for your life but whatever you do do not go into the water leave the water for the sharks and let the crocodiles deal with them before we go on like jellyfish they tend to think about that time they got stung by one during a holiday at the beach oh i can feel it stinging oh well what if i told you that there's one kind of jellyfish that can easily kill a shark i'm referring to the box jellyfish although it can only live for one year its venom is one of the most deadly in the world and it's an impressive 10 feet in length some people that have been stunned by these creatures die of heart failure before even being able to get out of the water those who survive have reported unbearable pain and bear astonishing scars these are not your common drifting almost plant-like jellyfish these are carnivores that hunt for prey making them one of the most advanced specimens of their species although they don't have a nervous system they have six clusters of eyes that can track their victim and kill it instantly effect which still bugs scientists because they can't understand how the jellyfish can process what it sees the reason why they've developed such a powerful venom is to instantly kill their victim so it doesn't damage their fragile tentacles if it tries to escape they have 15 tentacles and on each tentacle about 5 000 stinging cells remember that time you got stung by a jellyfish nothing compared to the excruciatingly painful sting of this one number 13 epic seal there is however an animal that nobody considers as a threat on account of its cuteness the seal but seals have been reported killing sharks yeah you heard that right not hunt but kill off the coast of cape town south africa a man noticed an adolescent cape fur seal chase a blue shark for more than 15 minutes then slice it open and devour its entrails but it left the rest of the shark's corpse to sink untouched this was the first time anyone would see such an act from a seal and it took eight more years to see it again this time by scientists studying both animals yet again they saw an adolescent seal but this time it was much more extreme the cape fur seal killed five blue sharks in only two hours the biggest shark amongst them was almost five feet long it turns out seals kill sharks because they both hunt the same prey and sometimes the number of sharks gets too high so the seal simply kills some of them to have more food for themselves pretty smart right the creepy part is that they only eat the shark's intestines each time leaving the dismembered shark to sink in the ocean it is believed that seals only eat the guts of the shark because of its high nutritious components and because eating the rest of the fish would require too much energy and slow down the seal for too long making it vulnerable to other predators number 12 moire eel moire eels can grow as big as 13 feet long and as freaky as they look on the outside covered in a disgusting mucous layer on top of their skin they hide inside of them a very dark secret they don't just have one jaw full of sharp razor-like teeth but two imagine alien but more snake-shaped and launching towards you very fast from a hiding spot in the rocks their second set of jaws is designed to pull its prey towards its throat while the other set of jaws keeps them hostage and unable to escape and that's how they manage to eat white tip sharks once they get the shark into their lair they manage to trap the shark so it can't maneuver to get away and that's when the moire eel swallows the shark pull and alive starting with its head so don't get confused by their beautiful colors moire eels are very dangerous their teeth are very sharp in both of their jaws perhaps more than those of a shark next time you're diving and catching the corner of your eye the shining glimpse of an eel remember that it eats sharks for breakfast and respect its territory number 11 pacific giant octopus the largest giant pacific octopus on record weighs 600 pounds and measures 30 feet in length the average adult however usually weighs 110 pounds and can reach up to 16 feet across not only are they the most intelligent invertebrate being able to solve puzzles or disassemble expensive equipment creating chaos in labs and aquariums they are also highly skilled hunters they like to hunt at night and are known for eating small sharks using their beak-like mouths to penetrate their prey's skin they have over 2 000 suction cups on their tentacles which gives them a powerful grip to overcome a shark they can change color in one tenth of a second so they can stay hidden until the moment of attack making them the masters of camouflage under the ocean and if none of that works they can always just eject onto their prey a cloud of toxic ink which can be deadly to sharks if confined to a small space these creatures are a perfect combination of intelligence and power and with 74 000 eggs being laid by each female every season sharks better keep their eyes wide open number 10 sea turtle remember the surfer sea turtle in nemo could you imagine it taking down a tiger shark keep in mind tiger sharks are amongst the biggest and most vicious sharks out there believe it or not sea turtles scare them off on a regular basis when the tiger sharks are still young and unexperienced and they think they're big enough to kill a turtle the turtle will use its strong beak to attack one of the few delicate parts of the shark their gills making the sharks swim away in total fear but even when these two animals cohabitate as already fully grown specimens sea turtles don't seem to change their behavior at all to avoid the tiger sharks which are their natural predators they in fact constantly reach the water surface nonchalantly exposing their vulnerable parts to the sharks now i'm not just talking about any shark these ones can be as big as 18 feet long and weigh a staggering 3360 pounds with teeth so powerful they can sink into the turtle's shell like a knife through butter so a more accurate image of the sea turtle would be a hells angels motorcycle rider rather than a surfer dude like in nemo number 9 hippopotamus the hippopotamus is the third biggest land mammal on earth and even if the name means river horse in ancient greek which makes him sound like very pleasant creatures they are considered one of the most dangerous species for human beings in the entire african continent they can outrun usain bolt but at an impressive 25 miles per hour they could certainly outrun most people and i just did a little fact check on that so yeah 25 miles per hour is the top speed for a hippo usain bolt's top speed is 27.44 miles per hour so pretty close but bolt would still beat him in a race on top of being extremely aggressive and short-tempered they are most deadly in the water this is due to the fact that hippos are most territorial in water and not on land which is certainly not good news for the sharks the biggest males can weigh up to 4 000 pounds which could easily crush to death any shark that would approach them bull sharks have been seen trying their luck on a bloat of hippos at the zambezi river in africa but due to the extreme thickness of the hippo's skin they can hardly sink their teeth into him on the other hand hippos can easily take a chunk out of the shark due to its massive canine teeth i bet that changes your opinion of hippos being fat and slow weird-looking cows milk's not bad though number eight lamprey now you don't need to be a big animal to take down a mighty shark you just need to be very creepy sometimes that is the case of the sea lamprey they are a snake-like parasitic fish that can be up to 3.9 feet long which is not very long compared to a shark their deadliness comes from their ability to attack and stick to their host with the help of their round mouth full of teeth and in the middle a strong tongue to dig a hole on the skin and finally suck the blood of their victim to top things off their saliva acts as an anticoagulant to keep the wounds from healing so they can remain attached to their prey with very little effort after a while of this nightmare the host will most likely be killed and in the better cases very badly wounded leaving horrific round scars behind there have been reported hosts with up to eight lampreys attached to him enough to make anybody cringe you could even say that they are the vampires of the sea sucking the blood of their victims until they slowly die number 7 piranhas certainly one single piranha wouldn't have a chance in the world against any type of shark but what about a thousand piranhas the tables can turn very quickly piranhas are extremely sleek and muscular which allows for surprisingly fast bursts of speed their teeth are scarily big for their size and dangerously sharp they could cut through a human finger bone no problem they also possess one of the strongest bites for vertebrates in the world unlike what is commonly understood piranhas are not carnivores but omnivores which means they like to eat pretty much anything so given all that information if a large shoal of piranhas wanted to attack a shark and win it could absolutely manage to mainly because a shark wouldn't be able to defend itself from a death by a thousand cuts how do you protect yourself from a thousand little mouths armed with extremely sharp teeth at a grand velocity sharks are very advanced predators but they are certainly not equipped for counter-attacking the frenetic feeding of a shoal of piranhas number six giant squid the giant squid was a mythological creature until recently but now we have the first footage of the deep sea monster taken in 2004 by japanese divers before the first images we only had as proof of their existence the terrible scars that we could observe on many marine animals amongst others white tip sharks the reason for that is that the giant squid lives in extremely deep waters and the white tips sometimes ventures into their habitat for prey the giant squid can grow up to 40 feet in length and weigh around 600 pounds it has the biggest eyes of the animal world on account of the absolute lack of light in the deep waters it has arms with hundreds of suction cups which allow them to grab onto anything they want and at the end of each arm they have serrated suction cups that will cut into any animal they come into contact with that really is one of the weirdest most beautiful creatures i've ever seen given the power of this deep sea monster it could even defeat a great white if it had the chance and that is because of its strong arms and the suction power of its cups it could easily harm the shark enough for it to lose a fin making it impossible for the shark to swim and therefore it would die on the other hand the squid has 10 appendages to lose before making it impossible for it to defend itself and therefore the squid would take down the great white shark number five titanoboa the titanoboa for example was a giant snake that lived 66 million years ago it was considered to be the ruler of the amazon for its tremendous size of over 42 feet long and its weight of 1.25 tons like its modern cousins the boas and the anacondas it was a constrictor snake meaning that they killed by suffocating their prey constricting their muscle rings around them until every single bone in their bodies would break like little twigs and then swallowing them whole the last supper of the fossilized specimen found in colombia consisted of giant turtles twice the size of manhole covers and crocodiles that measured over six feet long this monster snake was able to eat anything that would cross its path do you think it could defeat a modern day shark well given that the biggest great white ever recorded was 20 feet long there would be no battle at all the snake might not have been able to swallow a great white hull but it could certainly suffocate it without breaking a sweat number 4 mosasaurus the mosasaurus is a marine reptile from the late cretaceous era ring a bell they were featured in jurassic world in that terrifying scene where it jumps out of the water to feed on a great white it is estimated they could grow as big as 57 feet long and weigh 28 tons they were apex predators of the deep sea and they preyed upon other marine reptiles and even on other mosasaurus they had a double hinged jaw with three different types of teeth that were constantly shed for optimal sharpness and deadliness their flexible skull allowed them to swallow their prey whole like their descendants the snakes there's evidence of them engaging in aggressive combat within their own species speculated to be because of their extremely vicious behavior this giant sea monster could and did feed on sharks whenever it was hungry at that size it could eat a great white like weed a little sardine nothing could get away from such a gigantic reptile with flesh shredding teeth their fossils are a reminder of how small the human race is compared to the past we will never again see such a beast unless jurassic park becomes real and even then would you want for them to come back number three dolphins dolphins are known for their niceness and overall playful nature but they can also use their aptitudes for war sharks are known to prey upon dolphin calves and sick adults mainly because of their vulnerability compared to the rest of the pod but dolphins being the smart mammals that they are have understood the situation and are now at open war against sharks their pack mentality and incredible intelligence makes them a very real threat to sharks so much so that dolphins will cooperate all together to try and kill any aggressive shark that crosses their path their safety in numbers as they say this has caused sharks to openly avoid large pods of dolphins and swim away for their and this is a lives of echolocation what it sounds like their horizontal tails allow them to move very quickly and change directions in a fast frenzy attack they also have a very thick and strong skin over their skulls which they use as a ramming weapon they will swim half a dozen feet underneath the shark and then sprint up to hit the abdomen with their snout causing internal and fatal injuries it's not surprising that their method of killing is born through intelligence and not through brutality number two orcas orcas otherwise known as killer whales are also known to kill sharks these are extremely beautiful and scarily intelligent mammals that'll take down a great white and cut it in half just to eat its liver which is very high in fat and nutritious qualities some people would do the same thing for a rare delicacy so you might think their nicknames a little unfair to the defense of the great white though i would be scared of the orcas too they seem to know exactly where the shark's liver is located and perform an almost surgical extraction of it think of a surgeon but 22 feet long and able to launch at you at 34 miles an hour the great whites are apparently so scared of orcas they have reportedly given up on their usual feeding grounds for up to a year just to avoid them it is believed that great whites are an easy prey for the orcas with a high reward because they find sharks livers simply delicious leaving behind the carcass of the former king of the ocean number one sperm whales the sperm whale at an impressive 52 feet long can eat an estimated 110 to 320 million tons of flesh per year that is 1.5 tons per day in 1980 a study revealed a sperm whale with several sharks in its stomach some of them were up to 10 feet long living primarily at 1600 feet deep they can rely on their vision to hunt for their prey however sperm whales can produce the loudest noise in the animal world it's a loud clicking that can stun their prey instantly they don't have natural predators and are on average three and a half times bigger than sharks there is no battle sperm whales feed regularly on the biggest species of sharks that exist and the great white has no chance against the whale moby dick may have been fiction based upon a sperm whale but it's no fiction for any sharks in the sea even today these creatures are one of the few reminders left today of a past with a world populated and ruled by giants as you can see there are many different ways of defeating a shark do you still think they are the kings of the ocean in your opinion which creature could be the next indisputable ruler of the seas also check out our other cool stuff showing up on screen right now see you next time
