as you watch your goldfish dance around its tank you possibly marvel at just how peaceful and serene marine life can be but is it really a goldfish is hardly a shiny example of what lurks beneath our ocean surfaces from vicious fish that form the foundation of many horror movies to one that's simply shocking here are 15 of the most dangerous fish in the world number 15 purana okay so piranhas are given a bad rap yes they are vicious and yes they love to bite but they may not actually be as bad as what you've been led to believe from horror movies of the same name typically the red-bellied piranha tends to be at its angriest during the dry season water levels are low food is in short supply and this feisty fish is hungry it uses its powerful jaw and sharp teeth to deliver some quite nasty and painful bites but rarely do they end up as fatal attacks mostly humans are just mildly annoyed and inconvenienced still that's not to say that they aren't awful to other fish in the human world they would be the schoolyard bully they feed on wounded animals and fish and even their own kind basically they will bite at anything that might end up being quite tasty surprisingly if they themselves are bitten they have a unique ability to heal wounds in a single day not everyone is convinced that piranhas aren't out to conquer the human race though so fish expert dr h.r axelrod set out to prove they weren't he put on swimming trunks and waded into piranha-infested waters with meat on a fish hook while the piranhas annihilated the flesh they left him alone before we go on like this video smash the subscribe button and click the notification bell right now or slenderman will come from under your bed while you're sleeping [Applause] number 14 puffer fish mass chaos and harm can be caused by anything from weapons to natural disasters but strangely puffer fish can also play a part contain enough tetrodotoxin to kill 30 adult humans tetrodotoxin is also around 1 200 times more poisonous than cyanide and has no known antidote so with that information you'd naturally assume that humans don't eat them wrong after all we're a race of risk takers puffer fish while some of the most poisonous vertebrates in the world are a delicacy in japan china and korea specially trained chefs know which parts are safe to eat and can serve them to paying guests but that doesn't mean around 50 people a year in japan aren't hospitalized with poisoning with several fatalities other marine creatures who try to eat puffer fish are often handed the same fate while puffer fish blow themselves up with their elastic stomachs to ward predators off they can be caught off guard before that happens fish who manage to get a bite in are not only impressed by the foul taste but can end up dead number 13 red lionfish everything about the red lionfish says no stop not only does its red and white stripes scream back away but so does its large venomous spines the worst part is while this fish is harmful to fish and humans it's also an invasive species in some places it's both annoying and dangerous the red lionfish is native to the region of the indo-pacific but has accidentally been introduced to the western atlantic that was a pretty terrible mistake for it's now quite hard to get away from in that area so how is this fish dangerous well it's pretty obvious just by looking at it the giant spines are a dead giveaway and these venomous dorsal spines are its defense mechanism if the fish feels threatened it will flip itself upside down and show off its needles while they can be fatal to fish they are fortunately not often fatal to humans still that doesn't mean that you'll be happy about a red lionfish encounter you may experience extreme pain vomiting breathing difficulties and headaches soaking the wound in hot water can help but medical attention is strongly recommended for anyone who's crossed the path of this feisty fish number 12 candy roo not everyone is convinced that the parasitic freshwater catfish called candiru is as bad as it's made out to be still once you learn why people don't like it you'll probably be in no hurry to prove yourself right or wrong as the case may be kandiru also known as toothpick fish or vampire fish is a small fish native to the amazon basin it is commonly found in brazil peru ecuador bolivia and colombia what you're about to learn may make you want to cross those places off your travel list according to legend the fish can swim up a stream of urine and into the urethra of a poor unsuspecting human going about their business in the river once inside the urethra it will expand now what goes in must come out but the expansion makes that process not only excruciatingly painful but sometimes dangerous cases about invading the human urethra have been documented as far back as the 19th century which makes it seem like their valid claims however it wasn't until 1997 that there was a documented case of a candiru being removed from a urethra even this incident has been one of controversy but who in their right mind wants to offer first-hand proof either way number 11 great white shark it only takes one word to send shivers down many people's spines jaws that's it one word jaws and that's because jaws is of course the name of a thriller horror movie with a great white shark terrorizing the inhabitants of an island now we know that movies are not real life but that doesn't make this fish any less terrifying great white sharks are the largest known predatory fish in the world and they have a whopping 300 teeth but believe it or not they don't use these teeth to chew their food as your parents tell you to do at the dinner table no instead they use their teeth to rip into their dinner to create mouth-sized pieces before swallowing it whole their teeth aren't all that make them dangerous to humans either they have bodies the shapes of torpedoes which allow them to cruise and speed through water with ease they can even leap out of the water to feast on dolphins seals and small fish there are over 100 reported shark attacks annually and at least a third to half of these are by great whites fortunately most of them are not fatal scientists tend to believe that great whites are curious and are sample biting rather than intending always to eat humans number 10 moray eel moire eels are a delight to see on any scuba diving adventure they have striking patterns a dorsal fin that sits behind their head and along their back and they are an interesting type of ambush predator they also live in fresh water and brackish water and there are at least 200 species in various parts of the world they don't tend to pose all too much of a threat to fish but they do contain a protective mucus over their scaleless bodies to protect them which contains toxins this alone can be enough to give hungry fish their marking orders moire eels are also not the most dangerous creature in the ocean to demand your caution as a human but they aren't the least dangerous either unlike other reef fish the giant moire and yellow edged moire can contain ciguatoxins these can cause neurological cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems the toxins tend to be the most concentrated in the liver but that doesn't mean the whole eel isn't risky to eat in the northern mariana islands 57 people were poisoned just from eating half of a cooked moray eel and its head number nine tiger fish tiger fish are native to africa and can be found in rivers and lakes from one end of the continent to the other while some species are small harmless and go about their business without fault some aren't the goliath tiger fish is not your best friend and is not a fish you would want to come across when out for an innocent dip they're like the piranha of the tiger fish world the goliath tiger fish is a predatory freshwater fish that lurks around the congo river basin they grow up to around five feet long 110 pounds and have frightening looking teeth that grow up to about one inch long each such is the ferociousness of this fish that people around where it lives call it umbenga this translates to the dangerous fish and they're not wrong it's not only hazardous to fish but humans too the goliath tiger fish ambushes its prey by chasing it down no other fish stand a chance in fact the only thing that poses a risk to it is the nile crocodile there have also been reports of it attacking humans in the congo you can be out in the water minding your own business and the next minute you're in a one-on-one battle with a huge fish if that doesn't make you stay out of the water then nothing will number eight stone fish stone fish it's not exactly a name that screams danger instead it makes you think that the fish stays still like a stone and doesn't do anything at all but don't let its name fool you for the stone fish from the sin and seed family is one of the most poisonous dangerous fish ever known and they're lurking closer to home than you might think in the coastal regions of the indo-pacific some stonefish live in oceans but many species even live in rivers they have neurotoxins in the glands of their dorsal spine fins that stick up on end when they feel threatened because of their coloring which is like a stone it's not uncommon for swimmers to accidentally step on them and that's where the problem lies it's not exactly comfortable to stand on something sharp and spiky aside from the pain of stepping on a stone fish you also have to contend with the venom that's released based on how much pressure is applied the poison can lower your white blood cell count which leads to infection and their sting can even cause death a 52 year old man by the name of joseph lethem wassel succumbed to a stonefish sting on thursday island in 1915. fortunately there is an anti-venom for stonefish poison 45 degree hot water may also be able to denature the venom and vinegar can lessen the pain number seven bull shark it's probably of no surprise to most people that a bull shark is one of the most dangerous fish in the world bull sharks are cartilaginous fish that grow up to around eight feet long and up to 290 pounds if their size isn't reason enough to start swimming in the opposite direction from them than their aggressiveness will be these angry creatures are responsible for the majority of near shore attacks they lurk around freshwater systems like rivers and estuaries but also in many salt water and fresh water bodies of water they can live in both which means there's pretty much no escape in them they are stocky broad aggressive and unpredictable and when you think you have the bull shark worked out they go into something entirely out of character their diet is also wide-ranging which can make a lot of humans nervous they will happily feed on bony fish but will change it up for dolphins mammals birds and turtles they are one of three most likely shark species to attack humans and are thought to be the inspiration for peter benchley's novel jaws rather than great white sharks number six mescalenge to look at a mescalench abbreviated to musky by most people they don't exactly look vicious sure they're the largest member of the pike family but they don't appear to be dangerous but could they be muskies are a typically aggressive pike and ambush predator they bite their prey swallow them head first and don't discriminate between fish muskrats frogs ducks and rats they can even handle something around two-thirds of their own body weight the largest ever muskie caught on record was 67 pounds and 60 inches long so you could only imagine what they'll fit in their bellies still that doesn't mean they're about to devour a human in saying that an 11 year old girl found herself with some fairly horrible injuries courtesy of what her dad believes was a giant muskie they had been out paddleboarding on a minnesota lake and 11 year old marin castlehond was dangling her feet over the side of the boat in the water the next thing they know she's flinging her feet inside the boat with 25 cuts from her upper ankle to the top of her foot some as deep as to the bone she felt her foot inside the mouth of a fish and it was in no hurry to let go number five alligator gar hearing about a fish with alligator in its name would send chills up anyone's spines you wouldn't want to get into one-on-one combat with an alligator so a fish with the same name would be the same right truth is the alligator gar is a fish that has similarities in its looks to an alligator but it's certainly a lot less harmful i can tell you one it has razor sharp teeth a torpedo-shaped body and a crocodilian head it's not the prettiest specimen that's for sure it can also grow up to 10 feet long and pounds so yeah it does look pretty scary still you won't find yourself randomly under attack the only time well we hope the only time this fish poses a threat to human life is if you're an angler trying to land one they are huge powerful fish that are covered in bony sharp scales when they put up a fight there's a genuine risk of being cut or bruised so you certainly need to take care with the alligator gar landed with a rope lasso cradle or large net and keep it on its stomach wear cut resistant gloves when removing any hooks and never stick your hands near its mouth otherwise it's certainly no great white shark number four electric eel if it's not enough that electric eels are terrifying to look at with their square mouth and worm-like body they also have to be electric that's right to get to their prey this type of knife fish has quite a shocking approach they have three sets of organs that produce electricity the sox organ hunter's organ and the main organ together they can produce high and low voltage electricity for two different tasks low voltage is so that it can sense its surroundings and high voltage is to go into attack mode it attacks and stuns its target then starts using a suction feeding bite to finish it off humans too are not exempt from the pain of a jolt from an electric eel they can produce shocks of up to 860 volts which is enough for a brief but painful and numbing shock some people say it feels similar to a stun gun discharge however scientists are also beginning to discover that new species of electric eel might exist in the amazon which are capable of far more painful stings that may require medical treatment number three fox jellyfish box jellyfish may look a little strange but you wouldn't go so far as to say they look deadly but something doesn't have to look deadly to actually be it and the box jellyfish is well and truly proof of that this little critter which also goes by sea wasp and marine stinger lives in the indo-pacific and coastal waters off northern australia they are transparent pale blue and are named box jellyfish because of the strange cube-like shape of their tail but that's not why they are considered dangerous they contain a toxin that is thought to be one of the deadliest venoms in the world it attacks your nervous system skin cells and even your heart such is the pain from a sting from a box jellyfish that some people have died of heart failure or went into shock and drowned before reaching the shore those who survive a sting can suffer from significant scarring from the tentacles and ongoing pain for weeks their tentacles grow up to 10 feet long and have around 5 000 stinging cells on each one they can also grow up to 10 inches across and 10 feet long weighing up to 4.4 pounds number two flower urchin okay so a flower urchin is a marine animal rather than a fish but let's not detract from the idea that they are still dangerous to humans fish or not you're gonna want to avoid them in the ocean flower urchins are found throughout the indo-west pacific living among coral reefs seagrass beds and both sandy and rocky environments they can be a pink white color but it's not uncommon to also see them with yellow and white and a central purple dot it doesn't matter what color they are though for they are all gonna result in a lot of pain this sea urchin can deliver an excruciating sting once stung swimmers and divers can experience muscular paralysis numbness disorientation and breathing problems while these symptoms on their own may not always be fatal they certainly can be if you're a diver or swimmer at risk of accidental drowning in fact there have been reports of that happening a pearl diver supposedly drowned after being rendered unconscious by accidentally touching one however there's not a lot of documentation to prove this number one blue ringed octopus you would think for something as small as a blue ringed octopus which is around 8 inches that it would be quite harmless it doesn't look like it poses much of a thread and it's more beautiful than menacing the blue ringed octopus has yellow skin with blue and black rings that when it feels threatened can even change color but for all its voodoo magic there's something quite sinister about this sea creature and it's the neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin not only do crustaceans and other small animals not stand a chance against this toxin and the octopus but neither do humans they carry more than enough venom to kill 26 adult humans in mere minutes the problem is there's little time to act and their bites are often painless and hard to notice some people don't even know that they've been bitten until paralysis and respiratory depression sets in there's also no antivenom treatment involves pressure on the wound and artificial respiration patients often need to be placed on a ventilator until the toxin is removed from the body those who survived the first 24 hours normally recover as if the fear of drowning touching something squishy and foreign with your toes or getting sand in inappropriate places weren't reason enough to stay away from the water now you've got 15 more have you seen any of these fish in person were they as bad as you thought also check out our other cool stuff showing up on screen right now see you next time
