there are a host of animals out there that lived alongside prehistoric beasts like the dinosaur some of these animals are still alive today many are either quite unusual looking or have bizarre traits like the earless seal that lives only in fresh water or the cat that enjoys a day out fishing from the fish whose relatives date back to the jurassic period to the parrot with a meaty appetite here are 15 most bizarre animals that shouldn't exist number 15 bo finn fish this fish belongs to the amity family and is the only living member left on earth the descendants date back to the jurassic period when the likes of the t-rex roamed the earth the bowfin is a slimy greedy individual that is found in the sluggish north american waters from the great lakes southward to the gulf of mexico it has a prehistoric appearance with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth and a never say die attitude at least if this footage of its scrap with a large vom river eel is anything to go by sitting with its mouth ajar head slightly poking out of what looks like a mud hole in the ground the bowfin looks a little uncomfortable moments later we see what the problem is when the back end of an eel slowly appears from inside the fish's mouth is the eel trying to escape or has the fish bitten off more than he can chew i think the latter the bowfin simply can't digest the slippery eel and i'll have to be content with finding a slightly smaller catch today before we go on like this video smash the subscribe button and click the notification bell right now or slenderman will come from under your bed while you're sleeping [Applause] number 14 carnivorous parrots described as one of the most intelligent parrots in the world the kia parrot is found in the forested and alpine regions of the south island of new zealand they measure just under 50 centimeters tall and are believed to have been related to the heracles and expectatus that roamed new zealand nearly 20 million years ago these parrots are understood to have measured up to a meter high and may have been responsible for the deaths of other parrots throughout that time experts say that the large parrot had a beak that could crack open anything it fancied and its descendant the kia has a similar trait these cheeky little birds are mostly olive green with a brilliant orange under their wings they have a large narrow curved grey brown upper beak that can cause a lot of damage many travelers have had their vehicles vandalized by these birds but their quirky personality has them quickly forgiven the kia is omnivorous which means it is both a meat and a plant eater it was once despised by farmers who blamed them for attacking their livestock especially sheep today the only alpine parrot in the world is a protected species in new zealand as their numbers are so low number 13 pitsui poisonous birds this brightly colored bird is native to new guinea and has quite the powerful tool for protection whilst trekking in the bush with a tribesmen in 1989 jack dunbacher discovered quite by accident that the patooi shouldn't be underestimated as he was releasing the pint-sized bird from a missed net he cut his hand what followed led to an amazing scientific discovery dumbacher's hand developed a burning sensation so he popped it into his mouth to help soothe it unfortunately this action only added further fuel to the fire and his lips and tongue began to tingle and burn it was a sensation that he said lasted for several hours undeterred he put one of the bird's feathers in his mouth and was met with a burning sensation he likened to put in a 9-volt battery under your tongue his experiment confirmed that some pituis the variable and hooded type have skin and feathers that contain powerful neurotoxic alkaloids not unlike the colombian poison dart frogs these toxins can temporarily incapacitate their victim effectively acting as the bird's chemical defense against predators such as snakes raptors or humans fortunately for humans unless exposed to higher quantities of the poison side effects are minimal and include numbness tingling and sneezing number 12 fresh water seals a little rotund charcoal colored character the by call seal is a species of earless seal that only lives in lake by call hence the name the lake is located in siberia russia these seals are one of the smallest true seals on the planet and the only exclusively freshwater pinniped species adults can typically grow to just over four feet long and weigh up to 70 kilograms but the maximum size ever reported was 5 feet 5 inches long and 130 kilograms males are only slightly larger than females and they all have a steely gray back and yellowish tinge on their belly as the weather cools their fur changes color slightly to a brownish shade the by call seal is related to both the caspian and the arctic ringed seal their population is estimated to be between 80 000 and 100 000 so they're not considered threatened for the most part of the year these seals are solitary sometimes living away from the other seals in fact they don't even interfere with the food supplies of nearby seals the northern parts of the lake were once very popular with the baikal but times have changed and they are now often found in the southern parts possibly to avoid hunters number 11 fishing cats now it's a pretty common fact that most cats at least of the domestic variety aren't always big fans of water in fact if you want them to stop fighting biting scratching or generally being badly behaved you only need to squirt them with a water pistol and the problem is solved the fishing cat however is a whole different ball game this intriguing little character absolutely loves water surprisingly the fishing cat with its short stocky build can swim like a pro which is fortunate given its hunting ground is often underwater it could easily be mistaken for a domestic kitty if it weren't for its tiny ears short legs and tail another adaptation is their paws they are slightly webbed which helps with negotiating slippery banks the fishing cat is closely related to the smaller leopard cat it has dark mottled fur and like many other feline species it is a fairly solitary animal they specialize in fishing but will hunt anything that lives on or near the water including rodents frogs and ducks they are also nocturnal primarily hunting under the cover of darkness number 10 turkey vulture considered the most commonly seen bird in northeastern ohio the turkey vulture or buzzard has an appearance not unlike its wild turkey relative they are a scavenger eating varying proportions of other animals carcasses the turkey vulture finds these by using their excellent sense of smell so the animal must be dead enough that it has an odor coming from it it also has a preference for clean red meat not the entrails that the griffin vulture will happily devour no the turkey vulture likes its food without hair or bones gourmet corpses if you will they don't like to share their meals either and will easily drive other birds away with the authority of their size their meat preference is mainly mammals but they've also been known to snack on dead reptiles other birds amphibians fish and even invertebrates when desperate the majestic bird has a wingspan that can reach up to six feet like most other vultures they are not vocal and communicate using a series of hisses and grunts these are often only displayed when it feels threatened or is fighting with other vultures over a carcass although highly territorial when it comes to feasting they almost never attack living prey number nine panda and velvet ant it's easy to see how this little black and white insect got its name dressed in a panda suit the panda ant or velvet ant is quite the cutie with its fuzzy black and white exterior making it stand out amongst the crowd unfortunately as we know looks can be deceiving and although this bug is anything but aggressive it has a sting that is extremely painful yeah don't let the name fool you the panda ant is technically a wasp and its colors and patterns like those of a wasp serve as a warning to predators to stay away these curious characters were discovered in 1938 they inhabit the chilean scleraphil forests and are distinguished by a white coat that covers all their head except the eyes not unlike its namesake the giant panda black and white spots cover the rest of the ant's body the male has wings but the female does not both sexes average up to eight millimeters long panda ants do not live in colonies or have nests like other ant species preferring a life of solidarity instead although their sting is painful they are not considered an aggressive insect they are however parasitic and lay eggs on or near other ground nesting insect larvae or pupa they will use this larva as a food source for their young number eight the menacing peacock mantis shrimp despite being only six inches long this gorgeous assassin is both beautiful and deadly pound for pound the peacock mantis shrimp packs the biggest punch in the natural world the colorful marine crustacean is a real living fossil it inhabits the indo-pacific and can split skin to the bone and smash through glass with the two tiny club-like claws attached to the front of its body these can strike with the force of 225 pounds and with such speed that they can vaporize surrounding water molecules the mantis shrimp are believed to have been evolving for up to 340 million years pretty impressive for a creature that's so tiny they enjoyed a varied diet of fish crabs worms and shrimp and will even eat fellow mantis shrimp if necessary related to the malacostroku family these tiny crustaceans are important to reef communities helping to keep them clean researchers find them extremely intriguing comparing their arms and eyes to that of the praying mantis their eyes allow them to see polarized lights which is a complex skill amongst most animals they're also fascinated by their ability to remain undamaged when delivering a punch and are studying their body armor in the hopes of developing better body armor for humans number seven glaucus atlanticus if we've learned anything from the komodo dragon it's that dragons aren't the mythical beasts we once thought they were the fact they breathe fire however is only reserved for fictional movies like shrek for example although these dragons share part of the same name they are nothing like the type you would expect in fact they are water dwellers commonly known as dragon slug blue dragons or officially glaucus atlanticus measuring a maximum of 1 inch long these sea slugs may be small but they are mighty they are also extremely striking in the looks department with beautiful markings making them stand out amongst their slightly ordinary peers often when you think of sea slugs you imagine a slippery little bottom feeder a little like the slugs we see in our garden but the dragon slug is like no other it uses a gas sack in its stomach to float upside down in warm ocean currents whilst floating the dragon slug uses its tiny blue feet to snag small venomous jellyfish for dinner the dragon slug snatches up the helpless jellyfish quickly dismembering it with its strong jaw and rows of needle sharp teeth and it's not only jellies that unwittingly drift into this dragon's path these merciless creatures are also prone to eating each other if the need arises number six cape buffalo also known as black death the cape buffalo is considered a pest to ranchers a prize to hunters and a temperamental tank to anything that bothers with it these large bovines can be extremely dangerous and are not an animal you want to mess with with a memory like an elephant the african cape buffalo roams the sub-saharan africa and is believed to have killed more big game hunters than any other animal in africa experts say that if you ever cross one be warned because they won't stop until they've sought revenge an impressive creature the cape buffalo is one of four distinct subspecies of the african buffalo and the most common easily distinguished by their coloring size and horn shape cape buffalo formed part of the big five a group that was considered the most dangerous animals to hunt in africa the group also included leopards rhinos elephants and lions when the buffalo aren't fighting off the occasional lion or hunter for that matter they lead a relatively unexciting life spending most of their time eating grass and plenty of it grumpy and unpredictable they can run up to 37 miles an hour and are a force to be reckoned with they are very robust weighing anywhere up to 1 000 kilograms and can do a lot of damage with their horns when wounded like most animals they should be given a wide birth as they become very aggressive and angry if provoked the buffalo will charge and trample anything that is standing in the way so watch out number five geographic cone snail this cone snail is the most venomous of all the cone snail species this is a pretty impressive statistic given that there are 500 known species of this small creature considered one of the most dangerous animals on earth its minuscule size should not deceive you in fact this little character has had humans scratching their heads for centuries their beautiful shells have been utilized as currency trading and jewelry in coastal communities ever since they were first discovered their colorful pattern has many artists including rembrandt featuring them in a host of sketches and paintings the snails are a highly sought after creature with scientists at the national institute of standards and technology nist particularly interested in them they have discovered that although they are a deadly predator that's even killed several humans they might also be a medical marvel after sourcing several of them from the ocean scientists are seeking to use their poison to help with curing old medical problems national institute of standards and technology biochemist frank mari says that their venom is the same type that was used to kill dinosaurs in the jurassic park movies although it is scary and very dangerous it does have the power to be used for good these snails are almost all tropical and all are venomous and capable of giving a fatal sting to humans this sting is delivered via a harpoon-like tooth propelled from an extendable proboscis unfortunately there is no anti-venom for a cone snail sting and treatment is limited to merely keeping victims alive until the toxins wear off sounds nasty number four golden poison dart frog another extremely toxic animal is the golden poison dart frog measuring just two inches a single specimen can kill 10 grown men its toxic venom is used by the indigenous ambara people of colombia where the frog is often found they've used it for centuries to tip their blow gun darts when hunting hence the name dart in the frog's name these brightly colored amphibians are yet another fine example that sometimes the cutest animals are not to be trusted the poison dart frog belongs to the dendobroty family and lives within a tiny plot of rainforest on the pacific coast of colombia there are over 170 known species however this particular frog is listed as endangered they come in multiple colors ranging from black white red gold copper green blue or yellow and are also amphibian they tend to live their entire lives near the water to keep their skin moist this aids with their breathing their toxin is an alkaloid which has strong and dangerous effects on humans these frogs are extremely clever making their toxin from what they ingest in their diet this is called diet toxicity hypothesis what an interesting little creature shame it's so dangerous number three black mamba this species of snake is fast lethally venomous and when threatened highly aggressive over the years black mambas have been blamed for numerous human deaths and many african myths that exaggerate its capabilities to epic proportions for these reasons the black mamba is now widely considered the world's deadliest these snakes are native to the savannas and rocky hills of southern and eastern africa and are africa's longest venomous snake in fact they are so venomous they've been labeled the second most venomous snake in the world mature specimens generally exceed 2 meters but they can grow up to 3 meters long not only are they long and extremely venomous but the black mamba is also fast these slippery characters can reach speeds of up to 12.5 miles per hour usain bolt is faster but not by much and many of us mere mortals would struggle to escape this snake's clutches you would think that with a name like black mamba they would be black but they actually range from olive to grey it's the inside of their mouths that are a blue black color a sight you only see when they're threatened if you see it you better get your running shoes on pronto number two mosquito this disease-carrying insect is considered one of the most dangerous creatures on earth there are over 430 specimens of mosquito and between 30 and 40 of these pesky little insects are known to carry diseases these diseases are transmitted to humans and have often proved deadly in fact mosquitoes and the diseases they spread have been responsible for more deaths than all the wars in history there are a host of mosquito-borne diseases including malaria yellow fever and dengue malaria alone kills between 2 and 3 million people a year and infects another 200 million preferring to feed off mammal blood the mosquito is found right throughout the world they are normally dark brown in color and consist of three sections the head thorax and abdomen an annoying little character they are easily squished due to their size only growing to a maximum of 4.4 millimeters long although its lifespan is normally quite short the mosquito will meet several times producing around 200 eggs these eggs hatch in temperate waters and the larva grow fast soon out hunting for blood themselves this dangerous insect is active before dawn and right after dusk so it's important to minimize the chances of being bitten at these times of the day number 1. saltwater crocodile described as the earth's largest living crocodilian the saltwater crocodile is a semi-aquatic reptile that is found throughout the tropics of africa asia the americas and australia the average male of the species can reach up to 17 feet long and weigh 1000 pounds however some specimens have been found to weigh a whopping 2 200 pounds imagine coming across that where still the saltwater croc is dangerous and best avoided wherever possible these guys will often go out of their way to show their aggression strongly territorial the saltwater croc is responsible for several dozen attacks on people every year with their extremely powerful jaws and strong teeth these crocodiles have the strongest bite in the animal kingdom they can also hold their breath underwater for very long periods of time which makes them the perfect predator they can hunt large land mammals including buffalo deer and wild boar snatching them and dragging them down into their watery domain here they will hold them until they drown as cold-blooded predators they have a very slow metabolism this means that they can go for long periods without eating which is fortunate for their prey i would imagine despite appearing slow they are considered one of the top predators in their environment and are capable of killing other predators like sharks and big cats that's impressive animals are an interesting bunch they come in all shapes and sizes and some have quite the intriguing backstory many even have ancestors dating back to prehistoric times there are also some whose appearances are deceiving like the dart frog and the petui bird both are colorful and cute but poisonous one more so than the other it really is quite surprising don't you think also check out our other cool stuff showing up on screen right now see you next time
