we've had psychology already implemented here John mackovic would not bring his football team on the field until Iowa did as an end result we have a long delay Steve Davis and getting these two football teams on the field will remember it paid privacy a psychology major is his undergraduate degree his master was in human development well let's look at the game in the context of the Big Ten Michigan is playing Indiana today but you can see the winner of this game between Illinois and Iowa really will put themselves in a great position to play on New Year's Day and of course Iowa played in Pasadena last January first and Illinois today coming in here [Music] likewise had this foreigner Wisconsin and addiction there's a head coach of Oaxaca or are there some of electricity here today sell out of better than 70,000 Rachel about the beginning of a game [Music] we'll go back now for the Illini traveling white Jeff skillet will be kicking off for the hot guys of this crowd a real high-scoring game [Applause] fifty-four kill it get into it it'll be - the 10-15-20 stick hold in the 3035 and Lynch in the country a 41-yard kickoff return so Olin Sachs was there to make the stuff and here is the little guy at five nine jason Verduzco he leads the pick 10 of total offense [Music] Camino Bell leads a big ten and receiving was 31 grams Mama's been a big play guy for him Albert turned out a big catch last week against Ohio State very good on people America Canada yours taken running why John Derby the guy that Steve and I were talking about at the start of the game they've stopped going back to the Illinois offensive line Simpsons an all-american candidate but watch Brad Hopkins they feel he has a great future a junior out of gained up to on the play second down and eight now for the Illini [Applause] Kennedy nature comes into a football player [Applause] hopping over the middle complete the dilgar but tied in Gregg penny has a first down 35 of Iowa 24 yard games and yogurt latching onto that before Brian wives made the stop with a 32-yard line let's look now at this number one right defense on the big 10 Gator is six six he'll get his hands up high today but Leroy Smith very active at that defensive ends but Derby we talked about him earlier and this secondary they'll hit you Brian wisest six to a 215 pounds from Beijing [Applause] complete this is Camino fell and fell is very close to a first down nice down there as he tried to make his cut by shot played in Gary Clark he's just short of the first down and they're throwing the ball underneath very well and the reason they're doing that is because the two linebackers Derby and that time billiard was in the ball game they've taken real deep drop so that was the key of the ball game early on how deep those linebackers get and then the you throw underneath is their Shalit didn't go beyond Illinois took the drive last week against Ohio State score and then too late the game when they want a little field goal second down less than a yard deep hand off the by the 15th [Applause] to stop again KFC Illinois looks very impressive well one of the things that I was real concerned about is so many teams playing Illinois concentrate on the passing game and they were really concerned about making sure they stopped whenever they did choose to run the football so first down at the 15 yard line a gain of eight Darren Boyer who scored last week that touchdown against Ohio State's in the backfield this is for you John Kirby out of Oconomowoc Wisconsin his brother Glen played at the University of Wisconsin is over there also Brian Weiss Derby you were talking about he's married has two kids you talk about a guy it's focused well he that's the coaches the whole thing he's very folks watch him get heat no one gets around his feet he keeps his hands out in front of him and then just finds the open area and makes the tackle keep people away from his feet so that he can move parallel to the line of scrimmage six to 226 pounder one of the captains [Applause] No they go running back Camino bail he'll get the [Music] [Applause] [Music] has really come on this year he's such a good receiver coming out of the backfield but running effectively there he's the leading rusher Ron Gator out of Marion Iowa Mike wells from Arnold Missouri in the st. Louis area made the stop it's third and seven now or Illinois the third down Iowa's been tough that is the best figure in the bacon and bell in the backfield bagel he's in motion we're disco on 3rd and 7th gays in the pocket he completed the Gus Palma Palma fighting for the question goal I don't think he got it he did not gossip Alma out of Belfort New York Jenny jo pehli out of Dubuque Iowa the linebacker Mayo stopping short of it he did it is short of the first down also Gary Clark out a University City Missouri a senior big tackle and it's fourth down Lincoln's going for it good job by Palma to find the open area Hilliard the linebackers stepped in [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] first series [Music] [Applause] call timeout and think about this one so on fourth and one Jason Verduzco uses the Li knives first time out and John McAfee who's so tough on the road he's 9 2 & 1 as a head coach of the Illini Stadium for citron for the Illini very effective us Farnsworth downs they've attempted nine converted five this is an impressive drive Steve an early gamble in the game well they film important to have success for that one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] handoff to Bell he's got a person gold the body before [Applause] a train who just checked in at the nose guard stopping and Bell gets it and Illinois continues their movement towards ago lines [Applause] what's the offensive line they bring in the motion see the motion back come inside make the block she's kind of an inside track blank that's what gave them the first intent an offensive line is becoming a very good offensive going to Illinois first and golden CIFOR fell straight ahead fighting for the goal [Music] [Applause] Toninho bells scoring his seventh touchdown rushing what john derby 31 get blocked if time and Camino Bell does an excellent job of staying moving forward he just didn't go down he bounced out thought for the touchdown Pressey drive 58 yards and nine plays point after Jim foul by Chris Richardson the redshirt freshman holding his John Wright Kuznets Andre Gide horn and at the seven another game fill the opening series the line takes it in to go first quarter [Music] simple decaying of Stephen Kerry he's a major in marketing from Barrington Illinois the queen is Natalie Spears he is majoring in business administration from Bloomingdale Illinois oh she's got a major in business administration being from Bloomingdale out of work right she could just go work for Bloomingdale's anyway that was an impressive drive by Illinois interestingly enough Steve last year Illinois fumbled on their first possession and I would underscore all five of their first possessions so we'll see what develops here Richardson to kick off Dana news and Harold Jasper back for the Hawkeye big burger [Music] and a nice open field tackle ed time by Samuels who came flying across a team yard kickoff return let's go to New York here's Roger twibell well that just brings his game even more into focus Illinois would like to win today and move into that November 16th meeting will the Wolverines blame for the Rose Bowl first down just short of the 25 senior out of milky Wisconsin brings it out to the 29 Matt Rogers the all big 10 quarterback he had a tough week last week trying four interceptions but he is a coach's son and knows how to play this football game a gunnery starting to pull back he's played some tailback we mentioned huge he's put the big play guy and Allen cross is very dangerous that tight in he has 11 catches second down and six now for the hawk eyes Saunders goes in motion Rogers to throw and he's on target is a starting center fielder for the Iowa Hawkeyes a 14-yard gain and defensively Ellis look first Iowa was offense Davis Baroni Devlin Devlin is very very good in fact Hayden Fry feels there's not a better center in the country and Baxley a senior 280 pounds fact Illinois think that's the best offensive line they face this year we're gonna find out as this game wears on comes back to Saunders again going good pursuit that time Nina Howard the man who had a school record 20 solo tackles last week along with Robert Crumpton no gain on the play here is that Illinois lineup now Sean Street are not starting because of a curfew problem and so John mackovic bring him in later Pulaski's leading the Big Ten in sacks and Howard was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week last week Trumpton at a pick deflection of a past run last week against Ohio State second attempt [Applause] [Music] fathers again and he runs into some congestion here's the pile forward across the 45 to the 48 yard line Julian Brown stopped him there will be third and six now Florida having an easy day of it against Northern Illinois look at that boy Kansas State is having some year that's a shocker in it 17 arm when did that last happen Steve you know the big a two-thirds thing [Applause] here's a common motion Rogers is so mobile moving [Applause] the cat it'll be a first down inside the 45 and a yard gain I mentioned being a coach's son as colonial walk-on now on scholarship being a coach's son Steve what that means to me about Matt Rogers is he understands how to come back from adversity he's been around so much exposed to so much where's his dad Jimmy Rogers now the head coach to the Minnesota Timberwolves to the NBA that's right two weeks ago he was defeated last week he threw for intercepted the real pressures on Matt Rogers to pull it back together as a team all the pressures on his shoulders so he's got to make things happen they don't have that power backfield of a year ago as football but I think he got it back they came right back to him fortuitous bounce for the hawk eyes as they don't pick up on anything on the play [Music] next Saturday 3:30 Eastern 2:30 central ABC Sports brings Monday their first win of the season 22:12 isn't even the golden gophers of Minnesota [Applause] he's going to be about three yards short of the first down Mike Hopkins over there so lodgers right now Steve playing with a lot of boys as you would expect really distributing the ball very well well this is a young Illinois defense and they really felt like with motion try to change the strength of the offense to get them a lot of pictures the defensive coordinator of Illinois terribly concerned about getting rattled early in the ball game and so they were they're just being very conservative on defense against his offense budget about new tempers a defensive coordinator third and three Rogers [Applause] [Music] Robert pumpkin made the stop and use that of Newark New Jersey has more touchdown catches this year and that's a 14 yard completion we talked about that Dana Howard number 40 the linebacker easy on the redshirt freshman he was totally out of position on the play there he is trying to play catch-up but he was buried up in the line not even close to the pass coverage he really attacks to run but he's still learning to pass defense that's right [Applause] just outside the 22news in motion Rogers to throw huge can't come up with that one and there was a man Howard again defending on Dana news that is the first miss of the game for Matt Rogers he had hit all four of his passes previous to that one part of the attack of Iowa was to take advantage of Dana how he's very aggressive he's not right now because he's young not the greatest in the ability to cover the pass that time he slips down a little bit but they're going to try to exploit him a little bit and that aggressiveness that he has and trying to get him reacting and making the wrong decision again last week a school entered 2000 down here struggling to the first down I think he got it he did as Hampton 11-yard gain on the play Hayes is the go-to guy right now you can understand why he's such a great leader six-two weighs over 200 pounds I wanted to get the game to 1-dimensional they may have it man Roger just rares back and throw it again the the ability just break out on the outside they're really stretching on the sidelines the perimeters at this defense they are stretching a deuce has three catches already 440 yards here inside the ten to the nine they were concerned about Saunders he came off at these surgery a year ago playing wide receiver then came into this game with a badly bruised rib but boy he did not protect his body there he took it over the top Jerry I was working on the perimeters the reason is they've got a freshman cornerback a sophomore cornerback and two freshman linebackers and so stretching the outside the veterans are in the center at the safety positions that's why they're going outside and it again speaks so well of John mackovic such a young team to be playing as well this is a twelfth play of this Drive on a second down nice play action fake lashes in cow cut down [Applause] Iowa goes outside stretching the perimeters of the deep and across the middle right there the line back [Applause] Allen cross the fallback [Applause] across his first touchdown catch to the air and we're all even at seven a 75 yard [Applause] well as we mentioned the idiot mom coming here at the University of Iowa I think this band has been all my hotel window all night long they've had a great festivity guy here loves all can be back sleeting yesterday started right and sunshiny today and starting to cloud up but this is Chris ottoman fall football big tense time we're even at seven both teams taking their initial series and taking it in for six skillet to kick-off but let's return to first one yard to race up to get to this one I gotta get on that one picked up by Scott Turner [Music] the 22 became a disaster it was like you take it I'll take it almost nobody took it eventually Illinois does at the 22 well the point to make Illinois and their first drive got a great opportunity to get though to midfield this time to get a short kickoff at the Canton burnt make anything out of it and so Illinois we marched the last time 58 yards of nine plays to score this defense of Iowa has been tough the cue rushing touchdowns coming [Music] by Michigan so motion play action buy produce go on down gravely being chased by Mike Wells and he shows his mobility is John Derby tackles him at the 28 yard line you know the interesting thing Steve when he watched Purdue's go is how deep he drops he gets new 10 to 12 yards Gary and that really puts a lot of pressure on the linebackers because they have a tendency to mirror the quarterback as he goes back what it does it causes the secondary to haven't had to cover so much more field is he doing that cuz of his height to read the type is one the other one and to get better throwing Lane against this hard rush of Iowa Danis six fiber disco second and four now at the 28th of the seven all our score Verduzco to Camino Bell and Bell has the first down I see his forward progress we'll give it to him as he is able to hammer his way out to the 33 Larry blue made the stop Camino Bell leading rusher leading receiver for the Illini 31 catches coming in here and in the last two games he's caught 19 passes and look at he's averaged less wide he has been a complete player for John McAfee first down quick pitch near side this is Quentin lifts he'd come back into the of Youngstown Ohio brings it to the 36 yard line Carlos James and Leroy Smith over to make the stop tell you one thing about Illinois they has some depth bacon Boyer and Lynch from that tailback spot and they can run imagine Wade's and be very effective second down and seven that a lot of people thought this Illinois team was a team in transition that they would struggle they don't know what the word struggle is one two and all in Big Ten play [Music] we're disco nice play action has taken that's it off the panel that makes a nice open field move and advances to the 43 very close to the first half Steve that's what I noticed in film is that film makes that first guy miss useful but in the open field well he when he comes up perimeter like he does you're typically you've got an angle at him even so good at stopping and going and that's what he does this time I was doing a great job on the receivers they're really doubling up on him putting pressure on him forcing the quarterback to go to the receiver out of the backfield that's exactly what happens and then he overshoots things so Bell makes the first guy miss and the measurement is a first down the Camino value watched him time and time again he gets himself under control so well when he makes the catch seemingly everybody else is flailing around and he's ready to make that initial move well he's got the advantage people are coming in hot pursuit for him at an angle and then he's just sitting there broken down and ready to make a move and he did there for the first down to the 43 yard line 7 all five minutes to go on a very very fast-paced first quarter this is just palma going in motion Verduzco giving off to fakin bacon pouncing off with people across the 45 to the 47 and John Derby who'll make a lot of tackles he is the leading tackler on this team approaching 200 on his career Mike wells is also there got a hand on him and it's going to bring up second down and six at the conclusion of today's game will be selecting to Chevrolet most valuable player of the game from each team and for the 21st year through the Chevrolets scholarship program $1000 have be donated to the general scholarship fund of each school second inspect this dog being flushed for a moment Kelly's come back in and bail there's a class of 45 to the 47 but that will be no gain on the play [Applause] now we've got a late flag and I mean a very late flyer [Applause] personal foul against Illinois that is John Nealon the referee so that will wipe that way out and bring it all the way back to the 32 they didn't [Applause] [Music] that is Brad Hopkins number 79 coming in late there he goes at a Moline Illinois so that comes after the play moves the ball back to the 32 and his third down on a bunch down third and 21 it is go that deep drop that she was talking about he can cuddle 27 he goes down the black shirt at Iowa Hawkeye Larry blue and Ron Gator that's a coverage sack in the true sense of the word well really they've got such an advantage knowing he's got to throw the ball they put normal pressure on him and they just keep scrambling they're doing a great job in the secondary matching up with the receivers and closing it down and making the pressure on the quarterback and sewing to punt the football is for he wells he hits a beauty Errol Jasper back for the hawk I see before thee this guy missing that was Steve Nelson and the guy who came flying down a great job defensively was Julian Brown who's a linebacker who is on the punting team a 43-yard punt a one-yard return there is Brown out of East st. Louis Illinois so the hawk I stopped Illinois stops this offense seven seven are scored that drive is a perfect illustration of what Iowa does see when they're on defense Gary they wait for you to make a silly mistake a penalty the 15-yarder all that is just a part of the way they go about their business you believe that k-state now lady dog Raskin from the 30-yard line first down [Music] Rogers got time far side Sanders he's got it first down to the 50 yard line that is a 19-yard game John bonacic another one of the redshirt freshmen over there to make the stop and Sanders who was very questionable this week with a bad rib limping a little bit as he returns to the huddle but that plane a wide receiver last year's really helped him as a receiver coming out of the backfield it really is and you're right he is hobbled Matt Rodgers did a great job to look away and throw back down the sideline and put the pressure on the young sophomore in freshman those cornerback to have that outside responsibility Ken Jones comes in a wide receiver he's a fastest white out for Iowa and off to Sanders again as Saunders wrestled down I think we have another facemask coming up Saunders trying to go wide and it looked like somebody reached in there got a piece of it [Music] [Applause] Julian Brown the guy who got over there and got a piece of the facemask [Applause] [Music] [Applause] polis AK supposedly is the culprit left the right theory is making the play on the tackle reaches around Perry yeah you're right it was not Julia Brown who's Brown a made the stop on Polasek guilty of the violation and makes it now first down in three yards to go after the pendulum first and three balloon comes foot to the nearside Paul who Yahveh is now in at fullback booyah the number 23 he kept ago Harry Cohn kontin why he's a tough kid as it carried a ball 16 yard game Shyama right up the middle great trap fly from the inside and he breaks right into the secondary doesn't carry the ball a whole lot of time he's only carried it 20 times for 79 yards but all of a sudden they get the trap play on that with on philosophy number 98 boy that crossed him up who Yavin known for his blocking has seen his numbers but there was a 16 yard run and that's his longest of the season first down out the 27 yard line nice play action by Rodgers backside pressure coming scrambling out of there this guy's very mobile he's to the 20 to the 18 you forget how big Rogers is he's six for 210 pounds and he can run and he scrambled for eight yards on the play man has made a difference this year and being able to run the football and he's had to he's not had as much of a supporting cast around him he's run the option a little bit - all those things are factors he's not afraid to put it under his shoulder and go run he wants the football in crucial situations and the coaches are more than happy to give it to it gain of eight second and two [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that'll be a first down for Iowa say this Iowa football team played so well offensively last week they couldn't score a touchdown until late on a ball game on a 4th down pass to Mike Saunders and as an end result their offense is rolling effectively now and this guy Hayden Fry always has a few surprises for you in the course of an afternoon and he and he would tell us what they were yes [Applause] Rogers again to Robert at 7:00 4:23 a big part of this drive as an eight-yard catch on the play Mike Hopkins made the stop on foo Yaga watch what they do they really drive the receiver's drive the secondary batch really deep and then Kajal is right there underneath no linebackers around and so as fired up as Illinois has asked for their second timeout very interesting they had one earlier on the initial dry they called timeout now defensively they were a group Rogers would make a lot of teams call timeout he's hit eight of nine passes for 93 yards Matt is really recovering from this two weeks with that admittedly so the coaches said that he did struggle he's not struggling today well you know last year they had that high shootout he looked at the statistics of last week's game you'd figure there wouldn't be a lot of points scored that that's reason the Big Ten is so exciting and so unpredictable well part of the problem today Illinois defense Gary they're so young and coach the pepper yesterday the different afford we're just so fragile emotionally we've got if everything happens just right for us they get rattled if it the kill players nearly together so it's really time to clean the pressure automate exposing this young deep in I think a lot of credit has to go to John Mack of it to be 9 2 & 1 on the road I think a lot of us his demeanor on the sidelines he never seems to be flustered or ruffle we talked about that the other night but I think it's his system he really has everything buttoned down well he is under control his players are very professional life and away they go their team hotel last night in there they just go about very business blog about every little detail of the game that they approach [Applause] jump on the second and two [Applause] I will try to take the lead Rodgers knife way the intended receiver was Matt Whitaker and that's premise mothers Pearlman who gotten a piece of the ball and he's shaken up you know Priebus is holding that army hurt last week and a tackle against Ohio State what's premise number 16 right across to the tidy and he breaks on the ball Prince does a really good job cutting off the throwing line and makes a good effort to knock the ball away from the tide in winter 446 thus far on third down I was 2 of 2 and here's a third and 2 Rodgers to settle for the deal going [Applause] nearside intended for Kim Jones bilbul Johnson depending on the play and fire Jeff kiloton tenant part the fourth down apparently will come in an attempt to feel go he's very good from short yardage he's 5 of 7 in hiragana skillet the Silvis Illinois they're in very dependable for this Iowa team this will be a 24-yard attempt Jim Hartley the backup quarterback behold Steve bro to snap skillets kicked us up an Iowa pick up a three point lead [Applause] [Music] are you talking about this gun they really are being tested made a good point I was using all the field they are really stretching them well done a good job when you think they're going to run the football they've been throwing it you think they're going to throw it they've been running it that's the very thing that keeps this young man coming a character someone the other thing that they're doing I think is really a finger on top in Matt Rogers doing a great job into fixing on this place election okay now Michigan defeated Indiana so they are still unbeaten no I'd like to climb into a tie for first place and then meet the Wolverines November 16 Iowa State for the victory today they played Northwestern by the way in Cleveland Municipal Stadium I show you the finals of the Big Ten Desmond Howard and the move for the Heisman with three touchdown receptions today our producer Jim Bressler tells us that brings him up to 15 for the year that's pretty good [Music] [Applause] or that almost made it in for the touchpad so Illinois will have the ball at the 35 Quentin Lynch over there very wisely let that ball go out of bounds there's that wind in Cleveland Municipal Stadium Buckeyes a tough loss against Illinois in Champaign last week the John Cooper's team still off to a very good start so Jason Verduzco we moved him on the initial series into the end zone and then the last one with a penalty put in a hole could not dig themselves out of it we'll start this one from the 35 Michigan State their first win of the air Kiko duckenfield 240 [Applause] Disko Bay setting up a screen completely communal down to the 40 Lord Z's Kennedy's about a half yard inshallah the birthday a bell is a handful in the open field Matt Hilliard is over there along with John derby Bell was 511 a 218 pounder his father lettered in track at Illinois and is now a dentist and we have come to the end of this first quarter 10:7 a hawk eyes homecoming 1991 with Ally [Music] with Steve Davis I'm Gary bender we go to quarter number two Iowa with a 10 to 7 lead Illinois with a football they've used two timeouts in this first quarter they now start the second quarter second down on a yard to go Jason Verduzco a tremendous competitor Lorenza map [Applause] nummy Nobel diving for the first down he got it and that gives us an opportunity to go to New York and here's Roger partner here okay Roger that maybe for the Rose Bowl the pac-10 everybody thinking to wonder that one will be in Pasadena January 1st John Wright goes in motion [Music] 50 45 and looks like he may have a first down that Hillyard over there reacted well and Elbert Turner three-time pick 10 hurdles champion picking those knees up like he was running some hurdles coming to the near side it's an 11 yard gain first down for the Illini most coaches that look at Iowa have been more impressed with their speed this year than ever before what happens if speed causes them to react quickly and that's why they moved the sweep everybody's going towards the ball then right back and so you've got to really switch ears and then you've got a feet like Albert Turner play work okay that's the one thing a concerned Iowa's wide receivers they think Illinois he's got remarkable play from him and off this time to fake it fake it the Deerfield Beach Florida folks to the 36 Steve after one quarter Iowa leading by three and what do you pick out there well there's really just it really illustrates the score where we are on the ball game Illinois has made some mistakes Findlay don't show up here that did really cost him in their Drive and of course a couple of times we get the Iowa but really it just fears that Iowa's been able to troll do the thing they wanted it throw the football no trans yet anyway second down four yards to go when the 36 Verduzco that deep drop the chief talks about completes the children he's got a first down inside the 25 to the 24 John Kirby caught up with a 12 yard game dilgar is the guy that they say he's just learning so quickly his mind is racing at all times a redshirt freshman but his a talent is quite obvious John Durbin 31 he'd the senior on the redshirt freshman the tidy and he gets a little bit behind him doesn't react as quick behind him all the way yogurts 6-4 244 disco is seven for 67-yard [Applause] this time for a very little game maybe lost some yardage on the play Ron Gator and Larry blue there's Gators six six and they want Gator to get those hands in the air with Purdue's go at five nine they feel he can really give them some problems up the middle they want to collapse that pocket in front of Jason Verduzco I tried the deep drop they want to really collapse around here they squeeze down around him and all that [Music] that cracker second and ten Camino Bell now to the 20 leg drives he's way inside the 20 Gary Clark stops him after a five-yard gain on the play third down five yards coming up now [Music] high-powered offense this Illinois TV [Music] ah yards again that's best in the big 10 as far but right side okay that's far he'll annoy so for two on third downs and that's not going to help their cause here the right side Tony last her and James Messick move they go procedure against Illinois El Camino Bell on the opening drive took it in from four yards out to give Illinois that lead and then Allen cross with a 10 yard touchdown catch at the 641 mark of the first quarter knotted it up and then skillet from 24 yards out has given Iowa their lead that they enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] completes with a John right to the 15 he's got the first down to the 10 John right who John mackovic says is the most underrated player most unheralded player in the Illinois team 13-yard gain he's a third-generation player here for Illinois Illinois that time had four wide receivers and what really made the play is John Wright number five when he makes the catch what receivers great receivers do something after they catch the football breaks down the lineman goes past him he turns up for six additional yard he had a big catch for 42 yards against Ohio State last week his father and grandfather played at Illinois Verduzco down eight of eight for 80 yards quick pinch Camino Bell a little bit short of the buy gain of five on to play Bell showing his quickness to the outside Eddy Poly number 27 a senior out of Oklahoma City met him at that point it'll be second down by the line of scrimmage the six so they can pick up a first and goal at the 1 yard line [Applause] Illinois team [Applause] 482 tiny and change in his alignment in motion [Applause] a yard and that's all Leroy Smith was there a former running back now played at defensive end areas number eight he runs so well brings up third and fourth back you talked about Leroy Smith you never know where you gonna find him on the football field more in the comments of the coaches try to expose them a little bit more Illinois wants to get him because sometimes he look like he's out of control is what they Phil Monty he made the stop there yards to go from the five [Applause] we're disco he gets rid of it John right touchdown Illinois what a play by Verduzco [Applause] the ulema the nose guard was draped all over birdie show and sent away he stayed on his feet and completes a passage on right luck the pressure on produced though the quarterback everyone coming closing in on him and produced code the ability to jump inside away from the pressure that's what the making him a different player in his junior year at Illinois they ability to get away from pressure and find the open area Chris Richardson out of Richardson Texas to attempt the point after John Wright who just caught the touchdown to hold Richardson kitka's his right down the middle 1410 Illinois 1018 to go that was a 65 yard drive culminating on this touchdown grab [Music] chemic stadiums sold out they've expanded here they put in the new natural grass field it's quite a setting and Jason Verduzco engineering that last drive has not missed on a pass he is 9 of 9 for 85 yards as Richardson will kick on 1410 the aligned on news and we're back deed for Iowa [Music] he's a redshirt freshman breaks it off across the 15 to the 17 yard line he's grounded there by Mike Hopkins who plays so well for this Illinois team you know what's interesting about this score the head coach at Kansas State is Bill Snyder he was the offensive coordinator here for Hayden fries he has done a remarkable job at Kansas State and certainly if that score holds up for the rest of the ball game he will have pulled off maybe the all-time victory of Kansas State football history oh boy they have come off of a big win over Kansas they've lost only one game thus far that was delighted [Music] now by four the whole nine yard gain second and one Nina Howard yet on another stop we mentioned this Iowa offensive line and in all estimations blue temper told us he felt it's the best offensive line they will have played this year now that's saying something I think Ohio State at a very good offensive line it's interesting to see how they have grown as a team [Applause] hard to go deep drop setting up the screen Montgomery and he's cut down nicely that time good reaction defensively husband stop was the guy that got there the freshman out of Belleville Illinois in a loss of the yard on the play it'll bring up third down and long two almost three yards to go hasn't stopped playing a place of Shawn Streeter we mentioned that to the top of the broadcast Streeter got into some kind of a disciplinary action and John mackovic did not starting the senior out of Chicago third down and two go watch me take them take down that was Erin she'll be 53 who got there first Shelby started earlier the year lost his starting job to Hollis sec the redshirt freshman and we have a 4th and 2 now for Iowa Iowa runs the option play Matt Rogers may not want to run it again he just turns and comes down the line of scrimmage to run the option play and what he's trying to do is make sure those outside backers and the corners stay at home that they checked the responsibility give credit also to Brian Samuels helping Shelby on the play Jim hi sack to punt the football billable Johnson camino belle when guys back high snap Isaac just got another one he got a good cut out of it this is Johnson from the 35 [Applause] accord of disaster i shat out of Nashua New Hampshire got aloha a 39-yard cut a - two yards on the return [Music] Hayden Fry was the Big Ten Coach of the Year last year and look at this third winningest active coach only Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden the Florida State are ahead of him Dayton fried interesting point was made by you Steve he's turned a program around it was really down and his Kempe turned around well there are not any two better man in college coaching turning a program around staying with it think or disco on a roll out wide open Albert Turner first due to the 45-yard line there's Verduzco showing his flexibility running left the right hander completing the ball 13-yard gain the duct book at a keystone iowa a backup free safety making the stock per disco at five nine running around and he doesn't let that height bother him because he finds those passing lanes nearly caused uses of problems I think he's been kidded enough about being compared to throw off its Doug Flutie but what he's really doing that coaches say that is so much what like Doug Flutie is he's being able to get away from pressure and find that open area boy if he finds that Doug Flutie magic look out not that he hasn't had success on his own as Darrin Boyer knifes forward employee well gana cook two yards they'll be second down and eight Mike wells made the stop warrior coming back from reconstructive surgery both means he was a starter a couple of years ago got hurt against Colorado early in the area this battle to a position where he played a lot down for the Illini [Music] second and eight [Music] [Applause] I guess Alma knocked out of bounds inside the 20-yard line Jason only sac over there to make the stop the 35 yard gain and this guy's benefit play performer he's been catching the ball an average of 24 yards each time he's coming in motion a quarterback and getting a deep deep drop what happened the two deep safeties are really deep and so they're trying to exploit that middle of the line of what happened is in Carla's game got behind him as he's coming across the field earlier this year palma he had a five catches for three touchdowns against houston he makes another completion the dilgar joker has it inside the five first and goal 15-yard gain and jason Verduzco is absolutely sensational 12 of 12 now a hundred and forty eight yards you can't do any better than that well what we said at the beginning the program booklet they were really going to key off of those linebackers in terms of what they did in terms of where they're dropped for he did an excellent job of reading John Derby that time throwing the ball right in front of Derby and making the chuckling special he's gotta be sure doesn't go along 20 yards short of the first down will bring up second there as Ron Gator was the first to get there I don't think about desire with defense they always have tough tackles and Gator and Nelson replacing to all big 10 players from a year ago they haven't worked off it on and it's second and goal from the one mackovic seen leading by four was six minutes and Hayden Fry looking for some magic on that half with Bell again [Music] [Applause] Ramin Odell with the second touchdown one of the day or yard earlier this from one yard away team to make a big mistake when they think Illinois is just a throwing football team it's a very good point and I think the balance john mack of its system has been evidenced every year right pull away he has copes these teams and the reason they're so effective Richardson's point after is good [Applause] can i Illinois 552 to goes Camilla Belle with his second touchdown run of the day [Applause] [Music] talking to the offense that just marched 68 yards Camino Bell with the second touchdown run of the day his eighth of the year number 70 James bet they make the good block to turn inside and then they break through on Bailey number 49 to put Bell into the end zone good effort to break through the tackle white a is Steve he made such a good point you think it's produced going passing it isn't just passing they can hurt you at the run Richardson now kicking off very effectively by Jasper Jasper up to the 25 it's down there Steve Delta this is probably a good of specialties players they have out of Madera California is a transfer from Fresno City Junior College down there he makes a lot of tackles on special teams trying to figure out the the difference in the ball game so far Illinois on first down is averaging eight point five yards every first down play to Iowa's five point six they're really making their advantages they're going to stick it down and short every time we had one their heels the 25 5:45 to go in the first half of play founders in motion Rogers was off the car [Applause] [Music] that's what I like about Rogers his ability to look one way and throw the other yeah and watching films he did the Michigan game he's just done it consistently he's a senior he ought to be able make those decisions but if look for a receiver and then he's able look doesn't have the ability to receive where that open man is and he'll take the time the Boyd and deliver the good ball for the completion Rodgers 10 of 13 a hundred and three yards not quite as impressive as Verduzco but not bad a good job handling the ball [Applause] yes to capture the Illini that's a 17-yard a motor Johnson depending on to play a Jasper that only caught four passes coming into this game we use primarily as a mother attorney what was impressive is the long throw I mean this is a long throw on the field he's working on Jack for 83 he works on the building Johnson number three but that's a long throw for the quarterback and he delivers it just in time Gasper a red shirt come from the same del portillo here my defense reacting very well Todd leach the south side of Indianapolis was their loss of two Saunders had no place to go on that particular play second down and 12 Monday night here on ABC Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bill with a complaining peeler and won't be thought about the idea of possibly getting fired or something like that he said why to understand it deeper suck it down 12 yards to go Sanderson motion Rodgers has got time five beautiful open vehicle and Samuel out of Morgan Park High School in Chicago there he is he could Palmer strong safety now being used at linebacker boy thee you've got to put some attention on that offensive line of Iowa they're giving that Rodgers a lot of time because anytime he's able to look at the second third receiver you know he's got the comfort of having all the time he's getting good protection against the deep breath before [Music] just inside the 45 of the Allina 21:10 Illinois with the lead Rogers [Music] a third and seven they cross up Illinois John tsageri over to make the stop ends up being an eight yard [Music] [Applause] [Music] you're saying Lyman's run down the field Baxley and davis Baroni all-loving going down to make extra block after the play has run last second change marks if he comes in for arey pogie at nose guard first down before Iowa why action by Rodgers again sigh pressure coming from [Applause] got it at the 17 okay so Roger showed some boys in he had somebody coming after him he stayed in the pocket got the ball underway for a 20 yard completion you're seeing the tooth best quarterback the big pan put on the show today Harold chance for the redshirt freshman the good feet he finds the open area sees it right in between the linebacker and Matt Rogers has the presents to know and wait for him to get right inside watch Matt Rogers think right across the middle he's way to get the middle then he delivers the ball boy did he deliver that [Applause] setting up the running game after that completion of 20 yards pick up nine here it'll be second in a yard Harlan premise big ten pick for Illinois the free safety open to make the stop on Saunders they're gonna measure to see if he got the first down we get back to Rogers he really absolutely loves oppression he loves to be in tough situations in that play previous a passing play indicative of his play exactly great quarterback they're all competitive and they're all make good decisions but the real difference that separates the best from the rest the ability to play big and big game and that's what he's been able to do he split the linebackers perfectly and just waited on the receiver to come open boy what a shootout we're having thus far a Big Ten showdown and again will reiterate the winner today really positions himself well to play on New Year's Day in a bowl and there's a lot of bulls here in the stands a lot of dignitaries visiting this game but you're really saying two great quarterbacks putting on a show a lot of bulls who like to have a woman sunken down out of the yard to go - Yahveh Zin now's the way back in the eye dick he's the guy replacing the Old Vic templayer bowl gardener and he was off [Applause] Cosmo Gardner Garrett Brown will bell AG and still to play the way they are most gardeners starting for the Atlanta Falcons proudly playing to the Cowboys then Henry Jones the number one pickin quarterback for the Buffalo Bill good play by Iowa that night Matt Rogers second down in one the inflection of his boys to be able to pull Illinois off five to be able get there's the penalty situation I was not made any infractions person goes to Cornell [Music] schooled especially John Thomason yield on with Howard the to redshirt freshman who he's really taken their play to another level we've always said you generally don't get all that excited by young players but here to five was holodeck powered and he just great food to make the puck the tackle goes over the blocker then get in goal for the six see they have [Applause] indicating he did not get in looks safe [Applause] touchdown the official was knocked down and it took awhile [Applause] [Music] feel putting pressure on the linebacker that's gotta get outside there and watch the great effort to get the ball wrapped across that break the flame for the touchdown as part of the insole and so he got right over the pylon and took it in right after a temp now skillet [Music] 21:17 now Illinois's lead has been cut [Applause] my Saunders to know he's not going to get their standing up to reach across hit the pylon and get the six points I wonder how they practice [Applause] whatever they did they did it right Saunders scoring 56 left and his wide open game his big 10 showdown to go in this first half of play and it's been wide open Illinois now leading by four 2170 look at these drives Steve 5875 65 68 and now the last drive of 75 yards that's pretty good football or discos not mr. Paz yet he'll be coming in after this kickoff a 41-yard return - sighs - he goes to the far side [Music] Berthe richardson down to make the stop [Applause] and a half time on the Prudential halftime report Roger and boa run down the top twenty-five scores and bring to the latest college football news and highlights plus coverage of a Hawkeye marching band [Laughter] they're playing good football but the quarterback we're doing right [Music] [Music] [Applause] penis 1751 thank y'all six-six free Iowa talked about getting in front of our disco and he almost came up with an interception on a screen set up over the middle Ron Gator almost gets an early Christmas present watching number 96 he just gets pushed and Chuck right in the face of the quarterback and jumps up he really didn't need a jump up his hands are fake [Music] quick hits near side [Applause] get out to the 28th so that last pass is the first pass reduce go did not complete which is an amazing stat would you figure we have as you see here a minute and a half left to the first day third down coming up four yards to go remember now Illinois had to use two timeouts in the first quarter [Applause] [Music] and a third and four Camino [Applause] and good vision running by Camino Bell he had to change his path he got it done and Ron Gator made the stop what a creative call that got poor wideout you're expecting to throw the football they run inside and they get the first and ten [Music] you see the timeouts remaining 53 seconds left in the half [Applause] before they Snapple the ball we have a flier start on the offense [Applause] tonight on ABC after all new episodes of who's the boss and growing pains it's Madonna in the network television premiere of who's that girl an ABC movie special tonight what are you smiling about bursted 15 [Applause] Albert Turner almost got it and then further up the field Doug book on the deflection addict racket an interception [Music] there is book [Music] we started the first nine games last year then he got hurt and had a tough time getting that starting free safety stop back he's been alternating with Gary Clark Illinois is doing a great job Gary really taking those two deep safety is deep and spreading everybody out that's what it opens everything up and they're finding a wide field [Music] - Camino Bell fell across the 35 and he's going to be stopped just short of the first down as Carlos James the quarterback Mari a crane the nose guard over there to make the stop block grunting you see it 15 in Illinois is going to use the timeout that will be their final timeout and so why we have this break in the action there's a message from the University of Illinois Illinois uses their final timeout with 14 seconds they're going to have down third and 3 coming down they've been able to convert on their last 30 third down conversions not a lot of options left now but with Illinois and their diversity their imagination you never can be comfortable against them Kenya they just have so many things that they can attack you with and I think John mackovic is just an excellent coach of being able to expose where your weaknesses and he does a good job of covering up his own team weaknesses well I enjoyed my visit with Hayden fried yet every time I come in here I laugh get one in his office about everything but football his office you feel like you're on some porch at the country just rocking back and forth talking football he keeps telling me this jokes but they're so complicated I can't remember third and three reduce show the field complete the Turner now they have no timeouts left they'll stop the clock with a 15 yard gain 7 seconds as you can see they get up he'll start the clock as soon as the ball is put in play no timeouts left for the Illini they're gonna line the clock and here we go and a quick bite from the ball fiber disco what's it a long time getting the clock stopped three seconds I think the clock wasn't stopped when it was supposed to be a mackovic feels the same way well that was a long four seconds and that illustrates probably that the talent and the ability of Jason for disco more than anything else he really Erie that thought he knew the clock had kept running and he looked at it went directly to the official instead some pain the pops gone too far but if they're really on top of this game now they're going to put six seconds up so they add three well I tell you when you're on the road you don't expect that clock operator have a quick trigger finger there do you I won't lead you into the home-field advantage right we kid about that but they did lose only a second on the spike of the ball and so now the line of scrimmage at the 44 no timeouts left six seconds left in the half lady 21 to 17 they go to trips formation type of appeal / Turner's over there along with guest Palma [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and like well drop in there Disko very slow getting up and so in half time it's Illinois 21-7 [Music] Illinois 21 Iowa's 17 I'm Gary bender along with Steve Davis and Steve as you look at the numbers through the first half you get a indication of how efficient the offenses event well both quarterbacks are just having great days Verduzco is 81 percent in his passing Rogers is 82 percent their balance they're accomplishing what they wanted to do no turnovers Illinois's ability to control the ball 17 minutes I think is some water surprise so they've all accomplished their offensive goals that they had early in the ballgame anis diversifies they've been there's been no turnovers in the game the scoring summary let's go back the opening drive 58 yards Camino Bell taking it over from four yards out and I had the early lead I'm coming right back was Iowa on that 10 yard touchdown pass to Alan cross from Matt Rogers it was 7-7 Jeff skillet gave Iowa a 10-7 lead and then Illinois came roaring back John Wright 5 yard touchdown catch made it 1410 and then Camino Powell with a second touchdown [Music] and then a 75-yard Drive kept going a six yard touchdown run by Mike Saunders and here comes Iowa that very unusual way they enter the field they did that to start the football game we should remind you is at the end of the first half Jameson Verduzco scrambling round was tackled he went limping off the field so we'll watch him closely and to see if he'll be affected as we begin the second half and there's that old psychology major a try looking for some secrets on that tablet well the game has been everything we thought it would be there's Jensen producer on the sidelines looks like he did get a lot of pressure latter part of the second quarter when he got significant pressure he threw in completed passes so Illinois and I will hook it up here today this has really been something special the announced crowd sellout 70,000 to 20 let's look at that way the last play of the first half a lot of pressure they've not been able of any pressure now because of his height we think he's got to find a place to throw he can't throw they're collapsing down on it and he gets sandwich in between well the billiard that's where he gets a little bit of a finger on it either knee right so he looks like you'd be alright this is fantastic crowd here in Iowa I tell you what they love hatin fry and you know it's interesting Kate fry loves Iowa there is a love affair from the true sense of the word [Music] let's substantiate what you're talking about offensively look at Rogers 14 to 17 and he's really distribute the ball more receivers they're getting into the offensive role of this game Illinois do a bad job either half first half as Jason Verduzco was just brilliant hitting his first 12 passes use a Jasper now go back for Iowa Richardson to kick off the Illini with a point lead [Music] yes for coming up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] our kickoff return okay this guy has he's had to come on his own today milton eventually [Music] he made that catcher of the Miller hasn't been used that much in the offense but he's doing a job today Carol great speed but he's got tremendous quickness see breakdown Nathan paddler missing and then jump up field get a decimal yard good balance stomping goes that's the kind of thing make this special a great situation field is [Applause] 15 yard gain he just went over robert Crumpton his onder's out of Milton Wisconsin he was Wisconsin Player of the air his senior year and he is carried a ball about ten times for 42 yards and he really was a load on that 131 Rodgers again [Applause] fifteen yards now eleven Pam Rogers has them with Illini 20-yard line that was technically on the stop I say Rogers has picked up where he left off well they've done a great job we're those linebackers are finding the open area though back there really doing a great job from the 20 now the hawk eyes Rogers taken a lot of time with the line of scrimmage second man defenders on his own because he had a big hole up the middle nine yard gain and Saunders on three consecutive plays as boot Court this will be at the 11 yard line a gain of nine second and a yard to go if you're looking for the adjustment that I was made I think just mentally they've made the decision that we can go run the football against this front of Illinois when we have to make something happen go to the great block by Devlin [Applause] that was not a second got a hand on him I thought Dodgers fires across the makes contact with Rob Baxley let's see if he was drawn WA or if he's in fact offside dead ball false fire boy he was drawn on and very alertly Pulaski the senior out of Joliet and that by the way is the first penalty against Iowa today [Applause] see the positions they started very effectively 75 yards touchdown field goal punt for the touchdown penalty makes it second down six rule Montgomery the full-backs straightened up as he tries to make another 15 good reaction that time by the sec number 52 was one of those Pulaski the other bottle sick was not heavily recruited in fact they signed him late after they didn't get a couple of the linebackers they were recruiting on the other hand Deana Howard was everybody's all-american and now he and Herod are gonna play for a long time third down five [Applause] Ponder's comes in motion deep drop look out [Applause] the balls dance they're gonna rule that Rogers was down his part [Music] first sack [Applause] I think Rogers selfish it confers lucky he has the premise to get away from the printer his knee is down but even turn loose is a football at that point you put yourself in terrible situations good point it 45-yard field goal attempt now by skillet he could cut it too wide skillets kick design here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] on their initial series committing a penalty then the sack do not come over at any point can they trail like war [Music] well mistakes really hurt you Hayden fries team was moving the football they moved 235 yards in a hurry and then all of a sudden that illegal procedure and they never recovered then then go three plays and make go 60 yards backwards so that's the kind of thing little bitty thing make big differences as it end-result the missed field goal from 45 yards boy takes over at their own 28 yard line [Applause] most of the tight-end will go in motion play action by producer [Applause] and it's going to be Cochran what is it go to Iowa it is that it was James on the far side with Turner and they're going to bring it back incomplete see this one again [Applause] [Music] so again you see the great effort of the defensive line to jump up there's Carlos James breaking on the ball [Applause] and then go to the turf with a hot-glue why that is we pulled James body Hannah he's the junior at a park force alone emotionally this game has pivoted in favor of Iowa their plate was outstanding intensity right now no place to go on that play Eddie Joel ala was over there to make the stop out of Dubuque Iowa sir to go [Applause] you love to be at home [Music] [Applause] for this show to get out to the ferry fourth down the emotion changing don't you [Applause] first half when they put pressure on him he was either put to the turf or he threw an incomplete pass the same thing is happening here early in the second half kicking the football will be poor Ewald [Music] [Applause] [Music] and it's going to take an Illinois bounce however it wasn't artistic but already well to take the ends up having 20 yards on the roll 30 here at the University of Iowa they have an unusual course called football for foreigners designed to introduce the game to foreign hires which in Iowa is approximately seven percent of the student population with 74 countries skipper represented this is a football and interesting in it you know you think about the cultures of other countries coming over here must look like a crazy game to them huh from the 30-yard line after the punt of 39 yards Iowa has a football for the second time in the second half [Applause] backside pressure gets it off the lumic gunnery [Music] that is not bullying in the background it's just the crowd yelling woo ha the SEC made the stop Mike Pulaski the leading sacker in the bit 10 put some pressure on but that's a nine yard game like an any yard to go Rodgers again just really presses meeting with his poise in the pocket well the ability on first down to get nine yards now your second and short those are down in distance situations Iowa wanted to get into second man is Saunders and Saunders will get the first down for the hot guys go to the 43 yard line Shawn Streeter who did not start the game is now in there he made the stop he's the most experienced defensive lineman for Illinois at a brother George you played a Notre Dame with the Chicago Bears for a while line of scrimmage now at the 43 first down Hewitt's of the near side also Ken Jones is blanked out [Applause] Rogers on the first down yes sir dr. Montgomery open field to the 15 nice tackle by halle SEC eight-yard gain on the play Hollis a good open field stop on Montgomery that's impression after him but Matt Rogers is doing such a wonderful job of moving around the pressure they're putting it on him but the point is he's finding that second third receiver he just holds the ball till the last moment so that's the kind of pressure that he's been able to handle he's doing very very effective finding the open guy John Gustafson was the guy that hit a mastery just got rid of the football backin down long two to go Rogers play-action again boy he freezes those linebackers of the play-action [Applause] [Music] Wisconsin makes the catch it's only his third of the year a 22-yard grab Angela 81 was injured in the Northern Illinois game good speed he just kind of sneaked down the sidelines and really finally Illinois begins to close on e but nobody's there five yards four yards away second air has got to react they've got to find again Iowa's doing a good job of putting their receivers out to the perimeters the corners and making the deep end to plan for the long way to make every yeah until oh of that catch here's Rogers he's hit ten nice taxes and pokey is fact they're also brown that's the second sack of the day for Illinois that time Rogers rolled right into trouble and this guy in particular fogey out of Chicago vocational high school same high school the produced Dick Butkus well this time trying to be a little fancy when they've really been affected just running the ball right at Illinois and Illinois is not fooled there quick reacting and they were able to make be in the right spot Illinois defense came around second down now 14 yards to go [Applause] 21:17 Illinois with the lead Rogers [Music] the old Johnson has picked it off that was Saunders up the scene on the far hash and bilbul Johnson comes up with his second interception of the air [Music] the first turnover of this football game [Music] and probably the only bad ball that I've seen Rodgers throw today exactly see what happens when you get out of down in this situation little Johnson two men are breaking on the ball [Music] great [Applause] let me put down [Applause] was there also Larry blue blue in particular out of hips Ted New York and that didn't fool anybody [Applause] one of three second and 13 one of the things that ill gracious he fit the coordinates on the chapter that he wanted to stress to deepen is not the panic but Illinois was going to have success obviously they've not panicked they came out they were behind but they've really [Applause] [Music] reduce it down [Applause] there throws up the field and completion Albert Turner and that's enough for a first down and I'll taste something for disco did quite a job there he could not find his lip receiver he is open man but some time and got a 14 yard completion outstanding job by Turner number eight the play was obviously very slow in developing because the quarterback Verduzco got pushed out of bounds to put pushed aside Pauli loftware the receiver Hattie [Music] [Applause] forty-four to go on the third [Applause] I own has shut down the running game they've just thrown a brick wall up there John Derby led the charge yet time philosophy our let's watch John Derby we talked about him in the pregame show just jump up wow really the coaches they built boys and focus and what he's doing he just identified the flight he knew where to go he just stepped up [Music] Derby's we'd be invisible [Applause] [Music] okay brings it out to the 24 again that was Ron Gator out of Marion Iowa defensive tackle it's six six 270 pounds third down down nine yards to go [Applause] they're coming [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to cut the ball fine but Julian Brown boy that's a pizza open field tackle by Brown 36 yard 1 3 yard return [Music] [Applause] well Illinois has gotten remarkable mileage from California players nine out of the last 12 the lionize starting quarterbacks hail from California Jason Verduzco will last to that group from Antioch California you go back to the Dave Wilson's the Jack Trudeau's Jason Verduzco now is taking it over and there's the rest of them Shane lamb Tony Eason Mike white started all of that took in 83 at the 42 Iowa as a football 452 left in the third use will come in motion [Applause] Rogers stepping up in apakah Jews in Tennessee on Johnson's got another interception his second of the day why did he adjust to the ball as Hughes worked up and looked too late and Johnson was there [Applause] wonderful job of playing the ball perfectly good fake inside going to heat is number three but watch the ability of Phillip Johnson number three right in always concentrate on the ball really the receiver Hughes he didn't turn around and look for the ball Johnson took over from there they say they're always trying to pick on Johnson because of his height - 5 9 got up in the air that time he has been a complete player where this Illinois team has third interception to the air I was able ball three times two interceptions and the illegal procedure call had stopped all three drive and off the Camino Bell and Illinois still trying to establish bail but in this second half it has not worked very effective while hiking wells made the stop for Iowa heavily recruited parade all-american out of Arnold Missouri suck it down eight yards to go [Music] in this quarter Illinois thus far in total offense [Music] I was 61 [Applause] spinning around completed very wisely grandpa Cinzia tackle didn't try to catch that ball as wells and Smith were pouring down on Verduzco every time I was put significant pressure he's either gone to the ground gets it again this time I really think they could have called additional grounded Gary because we do it right at Grant Hopkins he did have a bacon back there reasonably close but I don't think he's all fake yeah J Hopkins did a great job to get put me pants down at her herd there's the staff Selection our statistician gave us a moment ago four yards on offense dr. Fagan [Applause] okay right then there's been some adjustments made and hate crime [Music] again in the greater is less on the the emotion they've been able to generate have been [Music] that is in chill for a while to cut again Jasper [Music] he's going to be drunk good reaction that time by Fred after stopped on me Noctowl for the cornerbacks for Illinois Wells has a 36-yard punt new yard return so Iowa was self-destructed three times here on drives in the Illinois end of the field now starts this one from their own 42 got to give some credit so to film will Johnson though he's made two very good defensive play Iowa's down by four three 1/2 minutes to go on the third Rogers discharger or he gets off the ball so quickly Aaron shall be over to make the stop on Saunders gain of it'll be second down and four saunders 13 carries 60 yards the effort of the tide in Whitaker the stand up tide in only Iowa really has the stand up tide in they had it back at North Texas State when Hayden Fry was there didn't have any fight in put the tallest biggest guy there and he made [Music] Rogers back now on second and four [Music] the dairy made the stop there game is seven it's been good to them all day long releasing the back out of the backfield and hit him over the middle and Montgomery in particular a gunnery start of the years a fullback then they moved him to tailback and started him there last week now moving back to fullback and Saunders running out of the tailback spot first down at the 45 of the Illini [Music] Rogers deciders he breaks it up in straighter days on his painted co-co-co / eventually catches up with him but he got out of the grasp of Streeter and was able to get back to at least the line of scrimmage Michigan winning today Illinois I'd like to go to three and up Indiana their first Big Ten loss at the hands of the Wolverines Ohio State winning for the Big Ten they start playing 93 and that will be short huh that will not be a completion but gunnery trying to come back to the football Polaski again putting heat on no Pulaski coming in as ten sack we had a tough time getting to Rogers but he's had a lot of lead rifle except he's of Hungarian descent and his dad called up one days and what are they calling you the Polish rifle for [Applause] they're down eight yards to go [Music] and time out NAB Rogers will use Iowa skirt at the 155 mark he'll come over to talk to Hayden Fry and that gives us an opportunity remind you next Saturday 3:30 Eastern 2:30 central we're bringing Rachel college-football most of you'll see a Big Ten game Michigan State Spartans winning their first game of the year today battle Ohio State John Cooper's cheap UCLA Arizona State Mississippi State against Auburn and unbeaten North Carolina State against Clemson and then later we'll be announcing a game from the Western Athletic Conference next Saturday 3:30 Eastern 2:30 central got a hair out of place John back of it like really enjoy him so much he is such a quality guy and you can see his demeanor really rubs off on his football team they play with such confidence and a young team it's really been important to him to get that kind of poise and confidence and still well he he's just a real technician of the game there he's taking notes writing to someone note just to be able to remind himself something a little bit later the ballgame or something to ponder the flares after the ballgame about that that's the process these kids take they take on that demeanor of your folks extension of the coach third down and eight done after Rogers uses a timeout looks like he's checking now at the line of scrimmage Polaski coming out for him setting up the screen complete to Montgomery [Applause] [Music] Illinois's got it the illini heaven captain comes up with him Montgomery was diving forward to be sure he got the first down and the ball comes out of there three turnovers here in the third quarter [Music] well reports of the wheels are falling all combined with wagon ride now Rogers they get exactly what they want they got man coverage so everyone spread out with the defender so that's he break down he's trying to reach I think area [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Bronson who made a big mass breakup against Ohio State last week comes up with a fumble recovered Shelby shrimp team of the ball here's Fagan secured out to the 35 many Joe Bailey made the sign I'll tell you what on that particular plate Joel mutti that pullback hit a nice kick out block and they ran right behind it and take it picks up the RT now mackovic 2200 and leading after three quarters maybe that's a little bit of that boys we're talking about you know there there are enough teams in college football that will beat you without you beating yourself that's what I was doing fear interceptions in a fumble pitch comes back to west you'll get the first down comes across the 40 goes at the bounce to the 40 won't carry on Bailey over there to make the stop Eddie Joe Bailon he started all five games for Iowa coming in here so Lynch picks up the first down and all of a sudden now Illinois's been able to run the ball and pick up a first down - scrimmage the lii 41 just outside of minutes left in the third quarter 21:17 Illinois [Applause] [Music] [Applause] drop completed in 43 Leroy Smith the former running back showing his feet on that drop as he gets back makes the tackle but dilgar with a 17 yard catch on the play again they continue to really press and hold key for the quarterback Verduzco is really where those linebackers are seen again they throw the ball right towards Bailey now 49 arrived back go to those linebackers and [Music] four catches for 68 [Applause] fourth sack of the game for Iowa this one goes to Matt Hilliard why they like this guy outta Cedar Falls a sophomore he's played so well on the special teams the Bilbray the defense coordinator said we're gonna let me play more defensively and linebacker they really started recognizing him on their special team because they just made such a caesarian he they'd get blocked and he's still fighting in their 48 and keep pushing and pushing by and he comes right by [Music] those [Applause] [Music] it's happened as far defensively to the outside and did he get the worst town we've got late met up with him at the sideline one second left in the quarter third down coming up eleven yards to go as Belle with one second going out on the far side [Applause] [Music] Harrison all this year [Applause] get to the temple appear [Applause] or just go back flag on the play complete the John ride he lunges and guess what would be a first down if the penalty flag doesn't bring it back we've ended the third quarter but let's see what this flag is all about the illegal procedure they'll bring it back there was a fine play by right John right is not what you call a burden he's kind of possession receiver he's made so many big catches this year number John back about that'll bring the ball back to the 47 yard line that's the sixth penalty against Illinois for 39 yards against Iowa only one that was a very big way illegal procedure stop that initial drive of the second half Iowa at that time win it man-to-man they've squared up on their receivers and I think jay-z produced Oh thought they might would be a blitz typically when they see man you expecting a blitz no one came he threw a good ball that [Applause] [Music] Verduzco [Applause] Cybertron Gator also man Hilliard get happy and so we've come to the end of 3/4 for actually doing a little [Music] 15 minutes to go I'm Gary bender along with Steve Davis Cory wells will start the fourth quarter with a punt [Applause] no scoring in the third quarter three turnovers by Iowa look like we'd have a high-scoring game and all of a sudden nothing on the scoreboard here in the third Wells hits this one de Jasper at the 18 yard line and a tackle by Steve Nelson let's go to the art now for an update here's Roger twine thank you Steve you're talking about the hangover there always occurs after Oklahoma Texas playing Dallas big hangover effect emotionally Oklahoma's been ranked more on tradition than performance so far there as a counter-reaction you taste it for maybe a yard as Dana Howard was over there let's look at the numbers in the third quarter of course the big number in the turnover Department three against Iowa well the quarterback to slow down in the third floor just because of the pressure of the defense's and the way they're really coming to them and making it tougher what's the obvious the most revealing is a three turnovers of Iowa they self-destructed in the third quarter Illinois is really not stopping two interceptions a fumble and an illegal procedure yeah that's been the big play in the second half and yard pickup as Hopkins over to make them to stop for Illinois low Montgomery who came in here with 14 catches has been busy today mark the ball at the 38 yard line first down Iowa tear them competitor this guy is Rogers he'll just keep fighting it every step of the way and you know those two interceptions after 24 last week are really stuck in his craw Saunders who Yaba in the backfield handoff to sander get away from Shelby Aaron Shelby [Applause] let's go back to a game the started out like there's going to be a high-scoring affair first drive Camino Bell took it in from four yards out cross came back ten yard touchdown catch it was 7-7 skillet 24 yard field goal 10 7 Iowa then right gave Illinois the lead which they have not relinquished thus far they added 21 to 10 advantage on Camino Bell run Saunders scoring on a six yard touchdown catch and that's where we are right now with 13 18 left in the game changing the play as Rodgers on a second down and 12 [Music] boy [Applause] forty-two Eldo Johnson that San Diego in the Quad City areas for a long time a bit westerner by birth made the cat I will finally got the right combination this young diva they went to man coverage they don't like to go to man coverage because there they're inexperienced and cross comes across the middle and he died still a one-on-one and he buys doubtful individually fanny [Applause] at four catches two dead for a total of 50 yards first down at the 42 blue McGovern she'll be heading handling as he steps inside the 40 yard line changed now Coker Jan Cooper comes in defensively for Illinois Iowa continually relentlessly trying to get into the facial year of the bill second him that's Montgomery again this time hit hard yes a couple more yards short of the 35 Streeter was one of the first to get there go boy he checked in at 66 244 founder Richard freshman shot Peter 36 yard line as we're ready and it's third and four now 80 degrees and became a dear Thursday gulab met a little sleep some snow in Northern Iowa but a beautiful Christmas day for football today [Applause] Rogers on third and four receiver Saunders fourth down we'd like to get that one back see Sanders wants to go for it but instead they're going to cut it away Jim hi sac we'll come here now they did have a fake punt against Michigan on a fourth and nine did not convert it and it was a big turning point in the loss to Michigan two weeks ago this is fourth and three eyes act to punt he's going to try to kick that one into the cop and quarter didn't really get that much on it but he's evil wolf Johnson with the fair idea to throw yard line 24 yard cut 2117 Illinois [Music] 11:42 go Illinois who really hasn't been able to get anything going in the second half offensively has hung on to their halftime lead of 2117 Verduzco has been sacked three times rogers has thrown two interceptions [Applause] right Oh Calvin motion my producer gets rid of it too right right Pizza a spin moves and gets additional yardage he needed to get out to about the 23 for a first down he's about a yard short gain a 9 Scott plate was over there to make the stop and now we're seeing Illinois strategy in the second half get four just go away for the pressure the rolling away early really brought me back now get him away to the pressure he goes Kabam frightening right and again John shows that great presence to know where the defender is get away from him and move up field well he's an a-minus student he ought to be able to do that to a gain of eight not easy but I think he got the first down we got slammed down pretty hard that time by Mike wells also faily on the stop they look to the far side they haven't indicated first down now they do first down just short of the 24 yard line time 11:27 Illinois has all three timeouts Iowa has used one of theirs the winner really positioning themselves well to try to get to a New Year's and bail in the back there Ashton produced a complete to dilgar dilgar the tide in the cross is 30 in the 32 and he's become quite a weapon now for Verduzco that'll be an eye and yard catch remember this guy's just a redshirt freshman we're trying to get him bigger he only weighs 239 they keep trying to bulk him up a little more he has five catches for 77 yard but was a jean doubt was told us I keep forgetting he's just a redshirt freshman they've been sent back knee down a control is a receiver but he's improving as a blocker and he really is a young talent they're cited about yard this is Lynch and Lynch drags a tackler boss appears to be enough for the first down let's see were they gonna marquise maybe he didn't get it nope they're gonna move it back he didn't get a very good spot on that one blue and Gator over there and so it's going to be short of the first down third down and less than er this is the real test of illinois' often late in the ball game trying to eat up some clock via ball control offense now he throw the ball a lot you rely on the pan with late getting out of the huddle eight seconds they're gonna have to call the timeout when confusion dilgar came out Beauty came out Turner came in and by the time all that transpired John mackovic had to use the timeout so he has two timeouts left 9:53 to go mackovic and company will the 2117 leave University of Iowa a very diverse University oldest dentals College Law School Natural History Museum west of the Mississippi well we're about 45 minutes west of the Mississippi be heading that way we get out of here headed to the Windy City of Chicago you know that's a safe bet to say 45 minutes it just depends what boater friend I'm riding with my producer Jim wrestlers is probably cut 15 minutes off of it third down and a yard to go [Applause] for sizing their time out and he did not get the first down we'll be fourth down and there we give us an opportunity join Roger in New York Roger Wow people forget how good Lindsay Chaplin is you always hear about Russell white you just saw how good he is line drive by for Ewell's Gerald Jasper at the 20-yard line up to the 30 spin move there and so 70 yards away now is Iowa 48 yard cut 11 yard return 905 to go on this big tin showdown [Applause] Steve Davis we really for all intensive purposes had two different games here well the early part of the vlog in the first half Verduzco is hitting 81 percent of his passes he's been sacked five times they really didn't put pressure on him until late in the second quarter and Matt Rogers he sees the two interceptions that he's thrown and he's been sacked twice so it has taken a different complexion the defense's that put more pressure on the quarterback and they've been more willing to go to man divorce a big fly possessions in the second half how is mr. field goalie suffer two interceptions fumbled and punted once and they have it again at the 30 [Music] made the stop [Music] this reminder the thrifty Car Rental postgame report we'll be coming up at the conclusion of this football game Gary this is the reason why coaching on both squads have said offensively you've got to establish the running game because late in the ball game it really becomes a factor now he's established the running game we'll be able to control the clock and make a difference I went down by floor that was the first down to the 41 handoff this time comes to Montgomery again he's become a workhorse in the second half Aaron Shelby over to make the stop Montgomery out of Waterloo Iowa just north of here he was the Iowa Player of the Year his senior year and a very durable player today throwing to him over the middle and a hard tough yards up the middle so I get a 9 make it 8 yards to go 814 you see the time remaining [Music] Rogers Chrysler came in the middle setting up a screen and a kid back when he was two closest to the football that's twice he's been really almost ready to take the ball and realizes he can't I think it was Montgomery was held up in the screen somehow well he fell down that's what happened they did a perfect job of executing the offense in terms of setting up that screen play and then Montgomery falls down watching good good effort by look at the offensive line how they kind of fake act like they're blocking left guy sits through and then they're 34 Montgomery fell down and Rogers threw it over his head third down eight yards to go Rogers good time on target the you used to the 35 big completion like pumpkins makes a stop at the 35 22 yard games you know we haven't heard from use in the second half he started out effectively has four catches for the day underneath receivers take the linebackers out of it now walking he breaks past the secondary back Hopkins 19 perfectly the area was cleared out there was no linebacker in front so the ball had a direct course to the receiver from the 35 after the 22 yard gain Iowa with the football Rodgers giving off this time to Saunders he's in trouble [Applause] gob was one of the first there he is number 53 look at this Washington now has jumped up on top 24 17 that's coming from Berkeley I saw kiai last week I knew to be a good one and is disappointed no one everybody thinks Washington is good as anybody has been the pac-10 in a long long time you can see a discourage Verduzco second and eleventh [Applause] [Music] Rogers keep coming gets away to fix it they used again and use packable the 30-yard line Pulaski over there putting the pressure on a six yard gain let's go to Roger for an update on that Washington Cal game Roger what attract mates 68 yard run by Chapman and then coming right back 65 yards in oxygen [Applause] the yard game first down inside the courtyard that is an invention that he gets his team he will take over his reset critical situation why am i successful again Illinois is taking chances they went again [Applause] favours and Rogers breaks into a relic joby was the guy that caught him from behind at the 19-yard line trying to take the lead by 40 left in the game [Music] [Applause] Watkins a late flag is thrown by the head linesman Hopkins combined on the stop [Applause] let's see if we can identify what the penalty is there the play is [Applause] basically right there but number 19 Mike Hopkins so that shows the penalty and that will move the ball five yards further and makes it down at the 12 yard line first down and three now for Iowa three 17 [Applause] we're going haircut [Applause] Rogers Saunders nice more than India's get ours I'll tell you what there's some tackling going on right now that was Marlon Prima's who made a beautiful tackle after Saunders made the spin move he's playing with a very sore shoulder that he heard last week against Ohio State but he suck in there he's got great respect from his teammates a four-year starter there John [Applause] and ER [Applause] thunders giving ground and he's going to lose big yardage played back to let's see what they're going to margin he tried to go wide on a second and one Shelby and Hopkins met him he tried to give ground and giving ground back to the 12 and Iowa's called timeout they'll have one timeout remaining for 19 to go Illinois protected us four-point lead as we could have a stretch drive well there's the teacher john mcafee with pupil jason Verduzco they have not been able to do anything offensively in the second half and waiting to see what Iowa gets out of this Drive and trying to retool it's amazing effectively were in a first half up in the second half both offenses were very at Illinois remember control the ball in the first half they had more time of possessions in Iowa now the thicker is it if they get the ball back without Iowa getting the touchdown and they control the ball they have not been able to do that consistently boy here's a big play there down in three Iowa down by four [Applause] to the game the others in the backfield wider [Music] [Applause] sighs [Applause] he wants the ball the pressure and heat [Applause] if you want to responsibility and he's just trying to get the 4-yard great job Matt Rogers and what a daring call what a drive as soon as it started on the 31 that to go here's the 13th play to Montgomery and he got back to about the five a gain of a yard maybe two Crumpton made the stop she'll be final timeout because of a lineup problem that's got to really earth came from we'll be back Gary bender Steve Davis deep with that drive they've got to get a touchdown really don't have they've really got to go back the timeout the line of scrimmage the 5-yard line down and quarterback you are short the ball came loose into the endzone Hopkins fell on it but they're rooming it down in Iowa hasn't just short of the goal line let's look at this one again taking it driving on the pressure at the quarterback brawl they can try to split the middle turn the flagman out and he printed for it looks like you got in the end zone yeah I broke the plane I agree with you there's probably chalk on the ball that looked to me like he was across well they'll try to get it in here third and goal [Applause] [Applause] [Music] left side Rogers has shaken up on the play 69 yards and 14 plays skillet right after that the good [Applause] Rogers on the steep for the touchdown [Applause] she'll be number 53 hit him right there on the arm [Applause] a great ride by really big the difference twice they rush 12 times and Rogers is the guy that carry the ball when they got inside the five [Music] number 53 [Music] [Music] in the second half with two timeouts left two minutes 39 seconds left in the game play oh by 324 to 21 [Applause] arrived as they control the ball by running it only two phases of the drive and I tell you we said it at the top of the broadcast and we'll say it again Pat Rogers is a pressure player he is a crunch time the great ones separate themselves in the bee yelling weird kick on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] to make the stock so you saw and Purdue I wonder if they found some magic yet in their offense [Applause] [Music] [Applause] where this goes comes out the Camino down to 30 he's just short of the first down as Mike well the packaging [Music] industry majubi at the 33-yard line two yards to go this go back again [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] telling his team to get off the field [Applause] [Music] pick the flag up I think the official was waving incomplete and he knocked a handkerchief that's what make the throw right there to build they're throwing the safe outlet passes great stick [Applause] [Music] and again the official picked up [Music] so it's filthy play action for this joke up places away [Applause] let's go down [Applause] now that grape speed got over there boy did he get there in a hurry what this drive is represented that I was doing a great job in the secondary and they're forcing Illinois to have to go to the short passes out of the perimeters very they're not very deep into secondary retirement yards to go this year Illinois is six of kin on fourth down they converted their only fourth down attempt today [Music] when winch caught the ball he will get the first what reaction by Iowa when they came flying out secondary their linebackers like much better they put more pressure on the quarterback to throw see making shallow good tackle head-on that was a previous boy with Camino Bell [Music] man [Music] oh this is a football game right here fourth down three right now is on the field he's making to change defensively got faily in there now Hayden's about five yards on the field he got Hilliard out of there got Bailey in and I think he apologized to the victim [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] gasps separately [Applause] work is the great effort was seen and heard of the everybody's covered up those short and he gets hit the going down around the arm the quarterback Verduzco he oh boy [Music] number-one ranked defense in the Big Ten Iowa has been something special in the second half of life in the 32 handoff to Saunders Sanders to the 30 will be tackled air Illinois has only one timeout left to try to kill this clock [Applause] Illinois coming in here with a three-game winning strip 1:26 left a discouraged Verduzco who came out playing so well in the first half and in the second half Iowa just shut he and the offensive roots down great job by their secondary the cover up their linebackers played much better pressure on [Applause] of why they headlines when running in [Music] [Applause] start on the part of the offense I think that was Rob Baxley that's only the second penalty for a total of 10 yards against Iowa they played very well in some areas and that's one of them for disco 19 of 25 218 yards he did not throw an interception he had one touchdown but he was sacked five times and they forced him to go two shorter underneath pipe route as the game wore on Rodgers has thrown for 281 yards he has two interceptions in a touchdown here goes on the draw boy he's hammered here fielding it round from the backside was there Sean Streeter the other side and now with 59 seconds left Illinois are they going to use their final timeout [Applause] the official not indicating anything yet let's see what he has to say the clock operator had I like the way you said that so the final time out by the Illini Eddie Marsan one of the assistants over there we're going to add a couple of seconds you know you talk about coaching is a game of adjustments and two different football games I give credit to both coaches for just going into the locker room making some adjustments and turning this game into an entirely different type of football game in the second half I will keep trying to really establish the run I think they felt like the thicket really established themselves and really be more physical with Illinois and yet they self-destruct and early in the third quarter but they just kept coming back the big drive was the 14 play drive 12 run two passes they had the two interceptions in the fumble and again looking ahead to next Saturday here on ABC Illinois with 51 yards in offense I will with 194 now they have the clock set at 101 no timeouts left for either team [Music] in the last two years the visiting team was one in this series but that may change here today Michelle at homecoming day [Applause] on a third and fourteen Montgomery hit quickly Mike Hopkins hiking in their box still running now as you see the time remaining Co colleagues here locally in the Iowa area 32:21 see I think bill Fitch is from coal college an NBA coach Matt Rogers now is going to probably take a delay a game here it just let the clock expire well if this game stays as is Iowa will go to two and one Illinois two and one Michigan on top the only unbeaten team in Big Ten play as now delay a game twenty-one seconds left fourth down and a bunch Matt Rogers looking to the nearside comes over now to visit with Hayden for eyes it's thus now starting to settle here in Iowa City [Applause] now Illinois make it a lot of changes defensively just before the snap of the ball fourth and 22 yards to go and coming after you I said not a very good kick dil vil Johnson picks it up he'll need to get out of bounds and he's knocked out of bounds on the far side Fred Cox over there to make the stop 13 seconds left well it's desperation time now 23 yard punt that time and casein Verduzco who's had a lot of magic for this team really needs it now his dance team me for 21 killed from the shotgun [Applause] up the middle right with a great catch now they'll stop the clock because of the first down he's at the 50-yard line seven seconds 22 yard gain for that all of a sudden gives them a shot there disco now as soon as they put it in play well snap it they put it in play and for this girl spices [Music] four seconds left put a lot of plan Steve in this something this was Big Ten football you never know what you did again well for disco he can make up a lot of yarn quickly but he made 22 of a moment ago what he's got now with a strong arm he can throw that ball into the end zone we've got to take a shot and then if he doesn't pull this off then he would be compared to that Flutey hoho that would be the magic he does have the window he's back with four seconds to go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] any taken the victory Jason Verduzco the Chevrolet most by the barely [Music] first thing you do is Gary Ben
