[Music] in the colossal world of mega construction as you may imagine building the biggest and baddest machine possible is a pretty essential part of the job while every tool has a purpose in the world of engineering for some of the most extreme construction projects imaginable it takes more than just manpower to maneuver and assemble the most robust and remarkable materials on the planet whether it's the construction of an otherwise impossible highway or the means of building a giant turbine at the top of a mountain it takes a special kind of machine to do the job from gigantic tunnel boring machines to custom-built hotel moving rigs here's 15 extreme engineering machines building the most amazing megastructures to press this button once and automatically the the service break will be applied [Music] yang zee river bridge steel cofferdam launch for our first entry into this incredible world of extreme engineering what better way to begin than with one of the most difficult logistical operations imaginable building a huge bridge across one of the world's most powerful rivers the yangtze river of china is a huge fast-flowing body of water that has historically been a mammoth challenge for engineers and modern urban planners built back in 2013 an engineering project began to construct one of the longest suspension bridges in the world the rmb river bridge that connects wuhan city to the rest of china's hugh bay province although there have been several bridges built to connect the city the rmb project was certainly the most incredible featuring two consecutive spans that stretch 2790 feet across the fast flowing yangzi river the bridge cost an incredible 3.08 billion yen to build and was officially opened on december 28 2014 and none of it would have been possible without this ingenious engineering process known as code for damming essentially it's an engineering system that dams off a body of water from inside the river that creates a huge steel structure that provides a safe and dry area for engineers to erect huge bridge columns while it's considered a common bridge building process the sheer scale that it was utilized in in the rmb river bridge makes it one of the most incredible projects of the 21st century hey hey did you know that if you smash the like button subscribe and click the notification bell you're more likely to win the lottery so what are you waiting for asta hanstein rig spark while all of the entries on this list are pretty darn enormous in their own right this next megastructure stands in a league of its own when it comes to colossal construction projects seriously although it may not seem like it this monolithic oil rig is technically taller than the eiffel tower feast your eyes on the asta hanstein oil rig a floating oil rig platform that's a serious contender for being one of the largest engineering operations ever undertaken the main oil rig structure consists of 70 000 tons the 1100 tall foot platform that was painstakingly towered through the norwegian sea back in 2019 which officially took the title as the biggest towing operation since the similar trolley platform in 1995. although the structure itself is absolutely huge the site is only part of the wider astan steen oil field a region that stretches across 4 265 feet across the voring area of the norwegian sea ever since oil was discovered in the area back in 1997 the norwegian government has undertaken extensive engineering projects in the area to fully utilize its potential currently there's an estimated 353 million barrels worth of oil inside [Music] segmental bridge launching machine when it comes to building nearly impossible bridges it takes a pretty incredible kind of machine in order to traverse the tumultuous terrain that it's intended to cross historically building high flying bridges has resulted in an incredible cost to human life but this next engineering masterpiece is forging the way into a brave new world feast your eyes on the slj 900 perhaps one of the largest industrial devices ever created manufactured by the beijing wow joint machinery company and weighing in at a colossal 580 tons this dimension-defined construction measures in a staggering 298 feet in length and is 22 feet wide it was designed to build incredibly long bridges consisting of a large number of girder spans and unlike many machines of its kind it was designed to drop bridge girders in place as it moves along its track effectively functioning like a train as it moves to and from its destination instead of using stationary crawler cranes to lift the girder of a bridge from the ground and then drop it into place the slj 900 is expertly designed to drive them off the bridge on top of each other like the teeth of a zigzag zip slowly extending its arms into place to support the next platform truly this masterwork of extreme engineering is an amazing piece of machinery and it stands alone as one of the most impressive pieces of bridge building technology ever constructed lieber tower cranes all right while we may have seen some monolithic machines so far the truth is even the most common of construction projects can be responsible for enormous feats of engineering take for example the mobile tower crane one of the most important machines in megastructure construction have you ever looked out across the city skyline at a huge construction site building skyscrapers that stretch thousands of feet into the air and ask yourself the question how did those cranes get there surely they didn't just roll up and start lifting things right but the simple answer to that question is what enormous machine do you use to lift another crane in the construction industry lieber tower cranes have been an important part of engineering history and the world's biggest and most powerful mobile tower crane is undoubtedly the lieber ltm 11200 a colossal piece of machinery that can lift up to 1200 metric tons set on a double cab truck the ltm can lift the equivalent of 700 automobiles and it has historically been used to pull off some of the most complex engineering operations in modern history the important crane lifting history of this german-based company the liebherr group reaches back to the late 1940s when in 1949 they invented the first ever mobile tower crane the tk10 an incredible megastructure that essentially rebuilt europe following the second world war [Music] bertha the tunnel boring machine while you've almost certainly seen a similar kind of mega machine in a science fiction movie the truth is when it comes to digging hundreds of feet beneath the earth there's only one mega machine fit for the job amazingly back in 2017 the world's largest tunnel boring machine ever constructed big bertha broke through to the open air after spending almost four years beneath the dirt yeah we're not making this up this tunnel boring machine had been digging underground for almost half a decade astonishingly bertha has been asked with the colossal challenge of digging a tunnel large enough to carry four lanes of motor traffic deep beneath the heart of seattle spanning a subterranean tunnel that ran almost two miles underneath the skyscrapers and skylines of washington state's crown jewel city the astonishing piece of machinery is accompanied by more than 300 feet of support gear that trails behind the bulk vessel that includes pretty much everything that the machine and its crew need from supplies like grout and grease to amenities like restrooms and even a kitchen hey it's tough work boring beneath the earth and you've got to stay fully stocked on average bertha can cover about 35 feet of rock solid earth per day that's pretty darn impressive the machine itself was named after seattle's first female mayor bertha knight landis a woman who changed the landscape of washington state in her own unique way in many ways the name big bertha is an engineering trailblazer [Music] bo scalise while the norwegian oil rig asta einstein may have seemed like the most colossal marine megastructure imaginable why don't we take a look at one of the vehicles responsible for getting it there in the first place if you've ever wondered how gigantic oil rigs get from a to b well it's likely that one of these incredible vehicles towed it in the world of heavy transport vessels the global company boscalis operates the largest fleet of marine vehicles on the planet the flagship vessel the newly named boca vanguard is a heavy lift vessel which transports super heavy fpsos across the oceans of the world this extraordinary machine is capable of carrying cargos of up to 110 000 tons as well as servicing other vessels that receive fluids such as crude oil water and a host of other things these mega machines are integral in shipping vital resources across the planet and as you may imagine as of all the vessels weigh in a possible amount it's also the boca vanguard's job to lift these floating factories in and out of the ocean when they need repairing measuring in at 902 feet in length and possessing a deadweight tonnage of over 116 000 tons the boca vanguard is the largest of her kind to have ever been constructed and laid down in water when it comes to moving colossal oil rigs or deep sea installations there's only one machine equipped for the job weak anger wind farm installation in the world of extreme engineering new megastructure projects are as important as wind farm installations after all paving the way to a greener and brighter future is one of the industry's most challenging and important tasks ahead feast drives on the weekender wind farm installation an offshore project located off of a german island which was created with the intention of giving rise to the largest offshore wind complex in the baltic sea purpose built to provide clean renewable energy to over 350 000 households in germany the weekender wind farm installation first came to light back in 2014 after a spanish electricity producer won the contract to create the custom-built steel mega structures that the wind turbines are constructed upon as you may imagine undertaking an engineering project that covers more than 15 square miles of huge spinning turbines in the middle of the baltic sea is a pretty difficult task sarens spmt when it comes to jaw dropping mega machines space shuttles are at the top of the list but have you ever wondered how these astonishing vehicles get transported from place to place well as it turns out there's an entire industry fully equipped to tackle this space faring issue one of those is serends an international company that specializes in heavy lifting and engineering transportation by utilizing a system known as spmt self-propelled modular trailers these incredible machines encompass a series of automotive modules that are custom built to transport massive vehicles that can't be conventionally transported and what's bigger than a rocket ship back in 2012 thanks to the engineering efforts of saren's spmt system the space shuttle endeavour soared over the skies of downtown los angeles mounted atop nasa's modified boeing 747 the vessel was completing its final flight after being retired from the fleet and it spent its last day in the air on five hour flyover before landing at the los angeles international airport this huge transport operation required the vessel to stay stationed at the airport for several weeks before embarking on its slow speed land journey through towns and neighborhoods where it finally ended up at its final museum home the california space center the space shuttle endeavor was one of nasa's most celebrated vessels and it was initially constructed in order to replace the challenger shuttle which was tragically destroyed back in 1986 after endeavour had embarked on its first mission in may of 1992 it completed 25 successful missions with its final mission ending in may of 2011. now it remains at the museum of the california space center all thanks to this incredible engineering mega machine the clock of the long now nothing says extreme engineering quite like building a gigantic thousand-year-old clock directly inside a mountain right well if you thought that prospect sounded like the work of a super rich evil genius then you wouldn't be far from wrong feast your eyes on the clock of the long now an absolutely astonishing megastructure that is officially being manufactured and constructed by the second richest man on the planet jeff bezos the owner of amazon also known as the 10 000 year clock the original project was conceived by an american inventor and scientist named danny hillis back in 1986 that's how i started thinking about the clock and is currently located at the top of mount washington in nevada as an astronomical time keeping apparatus the huge mechanical structure is being constructed with the intention of allowing future human generations the possibility of caring for and maintaining its operation potentially for tens of thousands of years other than the fact that this incredible megastructure is built inside a darn mountain it remains to be one of the most ambitious projects of its kind locogens wind turbine construction while we've briefly touched on the incredible wicking girth wind farm installation have you ever wondered just exactly how a wind turbine is constructed we'll feast your eyes on this astonishing piece of footage an engineering time lapse that depicts the incredibly complex conception of a 330 kilowatt wind turbine in scotland astonishingly this awe-inspiring structure stands at over 200 feet high and is one of the flagship models of locogen a pioneering green energy manufacturer in the renewable energy sector while it may not be the prettiest of projects the importance of these towering turbines is rapidly being realized across the planet currently in scotland alone wind turbine energy has contributed to over two-thirds of all renewable energy in the country georgia power nuclear build speaking of wind energy we should probably address the nuclear elephant in the room because when it comes to engineering extreme megastructures few projects can compare to the monolithic effort required to create a nuclear power plant as you may imagine it's not just the size of these megastructures that count but the strength of the material required to construct it back in 2019 in an effort to add an extra layer of protection to a power plant in waynesboro georgia the state's largest energy supplier georgia power completed the installation of a 40-foot nuclear reactor shield on both of its newly constructed cooling towers although the plan itself was originally built back in 1987 two brand new reactors were commissioned in 2017 and although the project has been hindered by increasing setbacks once completed they'll become the largest nuclear power station in the united states hotel montgomery relocation way back in the year 2000 one of the unlikeliest structures imaginable needed to relocate itself and what followed was to be one of the most daring transport operations in history originally built back in 1911 the hotel montgomery in san jose california is one of the oldest and most iconic structures still standing on the west coast and over the years it became a landmark location at the first street in paseo de san antonio however as times changed so did the needs of the hotel industry and california's legendary hotel needed to be moved in order to preserve its structure due to a more modern development being planned to take its place the registered historic building had to be moved 187 feet south of its original foundations as you may imagine moving an entire hotel requires a pretty extraordinary means of extreme engineering so what did they do well they lifted the whole thing onto trailers and what's considered to be the fourth heaviest building ever moved in history the entire cost of the renovation operation came to over 25 and a half million dollars and despite its seemingly impossible journey it was a resounding success port adventurer roller coaster construction as one of the largest theme park rides ever constructed the extreme engineering required to implement the shambhala roller coaster in spain's port adventure park is one of the most challenging projects ever undertaken technically speaking this mammoth megastructure is so large that it's considered to be a hype coaster the next level in thrill-seeking adventure rides at the time of its construction it was the tallest and fastest hyper coaster in europe measuring at over 265 feet tall and being capable of achieving speeds of over 83 miles per hour as you may imagine the sheer engineering mastery required to construct such an incredible structure was a record breaker too the steel track of shambhala measures 5131 feet long and possesses a total weight of 1600 tons yeah that's a lot of steel [Music] bagger 288 forget about gigantic roller coasters let's take a look at one of the most incredible digging machines on the planet feast your eyes on the world's largest excavator the bagger 288 officially known as the world's largest engineering machine and also previously known as the world's largest land vehicle that's a pretty compelling resume right but when you understand what the bagger 288 does for a living then you'll understand exactly why it needs to be the largest and bulkiest boy on the block first produced back in 1978 the bagger 288 is a bucket wheel excavator used for digging coal mining operations and also establishing lines for pipes to be laid it takes several weeks for its move from one location to another and although it may be pretty slow in hefty operations it certainly does the job when the bagger 288's construction was first completed back in 1978 it superseded the big muskie as the heaviest land vehicle in the world weighing in at a staggering 13 500 tons it took over five years to design and manufacture this beast of transportation and another five years to assemble with the total cost reaching over 100 million dollars when in full operation the bagger 288 can excavate 240 000 tons of coal roughly the equivalent of an entire football field dug 98 feet deep the coal production alone fills 2 400 coal wagons every single day sure while these relics of carbon-based power are soon to be a thing of the past they remain to be an insane demonstration of human engineering [Music] mincy muck walking excavators alright for our final entry into this astonishing list of extreme engineering why don't we turn our attention toward a machine that does things a little differently take a look at the mobile minzy muck walking extractor an ingenious vehicle designed to tackle some of the most challenging terrains on planet earth while it may not measure in as the largest machine on the list its purpose-built design certainly makes it one of the most capable engineering vehicles that we've ever seen by utilizing a sophisticated high-tech chassis the menzi extractor uses a series of hydraulic cylinders to adapt its wheels and supports to virtually any terrain incredibly this ingenious design feature has earned this amazing machine the title the spyder excavator and it even is believed that this pioneering design may play its part in the near future as a fleet of vehicles sent to colonize other planets well there we have it 15
