half feet measuring 32 inches long from beak to tail this bird is an aggressive predator it feeds on poultry as well as hyrax small antelopes impala calves monkeys young domestic goats and lambs serval cats and jackals and that fact alone should give you an indication of just how big this bird is the strength of this eagle is also phenomenal experts believe it is strong enough to break a man's arm with one swift swipe of their talons thankfully this bird does not have a taste for humans and when out for a walk it'll leave your children alone this eagle that will not think twice about attacking virtually any mammal reptile or bird it can overpower searches for its prey from above when it locks onto its target it folds its wings slightly and dives towards the ground accelerating quickly to high speeds it rushes downwards but as it gets closer to the ground it uses its large wings to slow down quickly striking with enough force to tumble and even kill its prey this eagle saves its remaining energy by consuming its kill at the site it may feed from a big carcass for up to five days roosting on a nearby tree between meals the marshall eagle is clearly a very intelligent and resourceful big bird number 13. stellar sea eagle the stellar sea eagle is one of the largest known carnivorous raptors in the world this bird is one of the deadliest on the planet and is mainly found in russia and japan the females of this species weigh in at up to 20 pounds with a length of more than 40 inches and a wingspan of up to seven feet males are normally heavier and can grow up to a foot longer these birds of prey have a serious weapon that you need to stay away from they have the largest and most powerful beak of any eagle the stellar sea eagle feeds mainly on fish which it targets from high in the sky however because it has such a strong beak it can sometimes attack other larger and more worthy animals these birds have even been known to pick up juvenile seals they swoop in and pick these poor unsuspecting animals up with ease apparently they make quite the appetizing afternoon snack who knew fortunately for us humans aren't on the menu number 12 harpy eagle the harpy eagle makes it onto the list of deadliest birds on the planet this eagle is known for its ability to defeat prey much larger than itself including monkeys with its vice-like grip so strong it can crush its skull wow what a scary animal the reported size range of the female harpy's prey was up to 3.2 kilograms much larger than the male who can only wrestle with prey under 2.3 kilograms a mere weakling in comparison the female harpy is typically much larger than her male counterpart weighing between 6.4 and 9 kilograms compared to the male that weighs anywhere between a slight 3.9 to 5.4 kilograms pounces so it has a staple diet consisting of mid-sized mammals including small antelopes lambs monkeys dogs goats and cape hierax it's kind of unnerving reading that list and knowing that this medium-sized eagle has the capacity to prey on these types of animals this bird is often referred to by its nickname leopard of the air this is because it preys on animals in that 65 pound weight range like that of a leopard evidence also exists that the african crowned eagle caused the death of an early human child researchers and scientists discovered the remains in a cave in tuan south africa in 1924 national geographic notes state that the african crowned eagle has been known to occasionally attack or eat human children how disturbing evolutionary biologists have reported that a small child's skull has even been found in this bird's nest so of all the big birds this one might be the one to fear thankfully the chances of being attacked by this bird are slim as they are considered random birds of prey number 10 cassowary the cassowary is known to be one of the deadliest birds on the planet and for good reason with powerful legs and thick helmet-like plates on their foreheads the cassowary can run an impressive 30 miles per hour good luck trying to outrun that these huge birds have four inch claws which makes them resemble the prehistoric velociraptor in fact they are one of the most direct relatives to the dinosaur that inhabited the earth over 80 million years ago often referred to as living dinosaurs the flightless cassowary bird is native to the tropical forests of papua new guinea in indonesia east nusa tenggara the maluku islands and northeastern australia the cassowary varies in size across the three different species the dwarf the defined by its distinctive black and white plumage this bird may not be the largest but it is considered one of the deadliest birds on the planet often described as a menace these birds have a habit of swooping and dive-bombing unsuspecting victims in their hunt for anything shiny and appealing [Music] not only that but occasionally these birds cause injury and in some cases even death one notable incident was that of a man who was riding his bicycle down an off-road path something caught the lurking magpies attention and it began to swoop down upon him he quickly swerved off the path unfortunately into a fence post which caused life-threatening injuries he was admitted to hospital but later died this magpie native to australia is found in parks sports fields school yards in fact wherever people are a whopping 85 percent of brisbane residents said to have experienced an attack during their lives that number is too high given that the population of brisbane is 2.4 million if these statistics are correct just over 2 million people have had a close encounter with these pests number 8 southern giant petrol the southern giant petrol presents an ominous figure measuring between 85 to 100 centimeters long and weighing up to 8 kilograms it is considered to be one of the deadliest birds on the planet this bird is an opportunistic feeder and will happily resort to anything in order to secure a meal unlike other seabirds the giant petrol can feed on land primarily from the decaying flesh of dead animals rumor has it that these opportunistic birds have even been known to attack scientists in antarctica with researcher sturdy clothing proving ineffective against even the youngest of these vultures imagine how much damage a fully grown one would do determined to secure a meal these birds will fight anything that gets in its way it's even known to viciously attack other birds particularly vulnerable juvenile birds and chicks by beating them to death or drowning them to get or make a meal the southern giant petrol is a true vulture of the sea number 7 bearded vulture the bearded vulture or lommergyer is considered to be a very intense bird in fact it is so intense that it's made its way onto the list of deadliest birds on the planet the bearded vulture has the same characteristics as other vultures they are well known as nature's cleanup crew these animals share the unique role of clearing landscapes of dead and decaying animals unfortunately their food choices are a little off with most vultures dying from poisoning due to the disease and bacteria coming from what they feast off the bearded vulture lives on a steady diet of bones and fish this diet turns its feathers blood red [Music] the coloring gives just some indication of how dangerous this bird is the bearded vulture has a well-earned reputation for being one of the most aggressive and assertive birds in the animal kingdom a very strong and robust bird it is known to carry away lambs calves and other young farm animals thankfully these birds are not considered a threat to humans as there have been no reported cases of them showing any hostility towards them number 6. peregrine falcon the peregrine falcon is not only the fastest member of the animal kingdom it is also one of the most aggressive this bird has an impressive cruising speed of between 40 and 60 miles per hour and can reach speeds of up to 220 miles per hour when diving down to catch its prey good luck to whatever has to outer on that this widespread bird of prey has a blue grey back barred white under parts and a black head as is typical for bird eating raptors the female peregrine falcon is considerably larger than its male counterpart these animals prefer open habitats such as grasslands tundra and meadows and are active during the day almost exclusively preying on smaller birds this habitat gives the falcon a lot of choice on what to eat although they are located near the top of the food chain they're not completely safe from predators and may be killed by other large birds of prey and even the odd car that comes out of nowhere number 5. great horned owl the great horned owl is one of the deadliest birds on the planet when we discuss the deadliest birds on the planet we don't usually refer to owls [Applause] despite that some species of owls are known to be ferocious hunters and this is where we see the great horned owl in fact the blanford nature center have labeled this owl the deadliest owl of all the great horned owl lives in all of north south and central america in nations including brazil costa rica argentina colombia el salvador nicaragua the united states bolivia mexico and canada these birds are adaptable and can handle a wide array of living environments such as deserts grasslands canyons agricultural sites outer portions of forests and near cliffs it's also not uncommon to spot great horned owls in city settings with lots of people these birds also have a huge repertoire of what they consume they're definitely not fussy eaters they prefer eating smaller mammals such as skunks raccoons mice porcupines squirrels woodchucks domestic cats voles and young rabbits they are also known to resort to consuming fellow birds mostly waterfowl ducks hawks falcons quail and canada geese their strong and sharp claws and beaks make handy accessories for this nighttime hunter number 4 swan swans are known for their beauty and elegance but they're also extremely dangerous and unpredictable these birds are known to be so dangerous that several state wildlife officials have put out a warning to all people living in homes or cottages on lakes or ponds of the potential risk they pose they've spread the word to watch out for these big majestic birds during the summer months suggesting people give them a wide berth leaving them to their own devices is a lot easier than dealing with the consequences coming face to face with a swan could result in some serious trouble especially when they're feeling threatened these birds can become very aggressive if they feel like their young or nests are in danger and they will stop at nothing to protect them a frightening sight these large birds cause a very loud and out of control scene squawking and biting at whatever they see as a threat it's even been reported that swans have attacked jet ski riders people in canoes and even motor boats that come too close number three venomous pitsui the venomous patui's poisonous properties were only discovered in 1989 when jack dumbacher was scratched by a hooded patooy after releasing it from a net in new guinea its poison is what makes them one of the deadliest birds on the planet their poison is considered the most powerful toxin known to man however natives of new guinea eat them following careful preparation researchers have also discovered that the patui doesn't produce the poison rather it ingests it through its food supply specifically a species of beetle they dine on if their poison wasn't enough to keep you at bay these birds also have strong legs and a powerful beak this bright orange bird fortunately doesn't pose much of a threat to humans unless exposed to a higher quantity of their poison effects from this bird's poison are said to be minimal and include numbness tingling and sneezing either way it's still a bird that should not be taken lightly number two ostriches an enormous bird there's no wonder that the ostrich is one of the most deadliest birds on the planet it can weigh anywhere between 63 kilograms and a whopping 145 kilograms or as much as two adult humans and relies on its strong legs and unique toe design to escape its enemies they are also incredibly fast given their size with a frightened ostrich able to reach impressive speeds of up to 72.5 kilometers per hour if cornered their strong legs allow them to deliver dangerous blows capable of killing lions and other large predators ostrich attacks on humans are considered rare and normally result from the bird being provoked that's a relief on some occasions there have been people that have come into contact with these huge birds records of severe injuries and deaths are enough to keep you up at night one of the most famous ostrich attacks would have to be that of american musician johnny cash cash owned an exotic animal park one day he swung a six-foot stick at a particularly aggressive male bird and the bird retaliated by slashing his foot and attacking his stomach luckily for cash he was saved by his strong belt buckle if it was not for this buckle it could have all been over for the world famous american singer songwriter number 1 emus the common emu close relative to the ostrich is the only survivor of several forms exterminated by settlers a truly incredible fee this big bird cannot be stopped its stout body and long-legged persona is commonly compared to its relative the cassowary this might be one reason why it has so many dangerous abilities oh my god the emu can run at nearly 30 miles per hour that's a huge advantage when retreating from a potential threat if however these large flightless birds do find themselves cornered they can use their big three-toed feet to kick these feet can cause a lot of damage like cassowaries and ostriches the toe claws of an emu are capable of eviscerating animals fortunately human fatalities are extremely rare reports of emu attacks resulting in a range of injuries in australia and in wild animal parks emu farms and zoos across the world are not uncommon however even though these numbers are low i wouldn't suggest approaching one in the wild you never know what it may be thinking birds have provided the plot for many a horror movie over the years on the big screen the main character is a swooping dive bombing menacing member of the bird family technically descendants of the very first reptile the dinosaur it's not really surprising that some should be avoided wherever possible also check out our other cool stuff showing up on screen right now see you next time you
