across the world are hidden communities of people who don't live life like the rest of us through adding a bit of flavor and color to a white picket horizon it's refreshing but also straight up weird from the dwarf run kingdom of the little people to the freezing northernmost town in the world here are 15 cities you won't actually believe exist number 15 kingdom slash city of small people also called the kingdom of the little people this place is a theme park like no other most places you need a slick looking cv to bag a job but here you only need to be shorter than four feet three inches located an hour away from the capital of the southwest province of china kunming the place has drawn criticism from across the world founded in 2009 the wizard of oz like place was created by wealthy real estate mogul chen ming warwick davis probably the most famous person to have a dwarfism condition is vocal about his dislike and the exploitative nature of the place which uses people with dwarfism to create a disneyland-like vibe through comic performances [Music] the performers here range between 19 and 49 and claim to enjoy life in the theme park where they're away from mocking eyes and prejudice with the employees even living on site the performers receive a monthly salary of between 1 000 and 3 000 rmb which is about the same as a university graduate in the local area would make with roles ranging from sales representative to accountants the community is almost entirely self-sufficient and with everything scaled down to fit the employees needs it's all very practical to use even if a bit surreal before we go on like this video smash the subscribe button and click the notification bell right now or slenderman will come from under your bed while you're sleeping number 14 long year bien the world's northernmost town the unusual title of the northern most permanently inhabited community goes to long eurobien in norway found in the middle of nowhere the town was used to accommodate the local coal miners and their families but now that the mining operations have dried up it mainly survives off of tourism and this is a very popular restaurant called with no sunlight for five months a year it's a hard sell for any travel agent aside from polar bears the permanent population of long yearbien is 2 300 with a stunningly diverse population considering its size 50 nationals are represented mainly thanks to the svalbard treaty making it a visa-free zone there's a pretty funny reason as to why over 100 thai people inhabit this isolated and below freezing place back in the day coal miners used to go to thailand on their time off to unwind and enjoy themselves this would sometimes mean falling in love with a local and getting married after bringing their brides back to svalbard the bride's families and friends would follow and end up creating a mini thai community in this bitterly cold climate i can't imagine wanting to go from the warm and paradisial land of thailand to a place that gets as cold as negative 46.3 degrees celsius and where 7 degrees celsius is considered a hot summer's day number 13. fusing in busingen is a piece of germany carved out of switzerland whilst the residents are technically german they speak swiss and use swiss francs to buy their shopping the borders almost comical as it actually divides one road in half meaning one side of the road pays lower income taxes as they're technically in switzerland whilst the other gets a tax break on their pension as they're technically in germany with a population of one thousand five hundred germans the confusion stems from a family argument stemming all the way back to 1693. eberhardhim thurne was an austrian noble in control of busingan who was thought to be secretly catholic by his protestant family the suspicions erupted when his cousins kidnapped him and took him to schaffhausen in protestant switzerland where he was tried and sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars that was until austria threatened to invade this small town to get him out austria would go on to sell the land in the area except for busingen why just spite austria lost it to napoleon in 1805 which then fell into the hands of germany number 12 hell michigan usa welcome to hell no literally in the state of michigan usa is a little town called hell made up of a few businesses and a bar gloriously called hellhole bar there may not be any lucifer to greet you on arrival but it is a pun maker's dream there was a national media delight when the town experienced severe snowfall in winter 2014 with countless headlines commenting on hell freezing over if you were to visit the town you can pay 100 to become the mayor of hell for the day along with a key to the city why would a place ever be called hell well no one knows for certain but there are a few theories floating around one theory states that the founder george reeves when asked about what the place will be named responded i don't know you can name it hell for all i care the people of hell certainly don't shy away from the joke with countless restaurants and shops cashing in on the gimmick even the tourism page for the place encourages people to go to hell michigan number 11 slab city the last free place on earth is a community made up of misfits from all walks of life who are joined in their desire to be off the grid and away from wider society in the middle of a scorching desert otherwise known as slab city this place in the sonoran desert california is quite literally off the grid as it has no connection to the main power grid no trash or water services and an all-around lack of the basics which make life easier and more pleasant this stripped back dust road and shacked house community gives off serious mad max vibes the place has also been visited in sean penn's movie into the wild about the trials and tribulations of christopher mccandless's life this place which is situated in an abandoned army base may come across as a hippie utopia where everyone lives in harmony but that is far from reality with theft drug abuse and the fact that it can get up to 120 degrees fahrenheit in the sweltering summers it is far from a dreamland its various societal buildings make it not completely desolated these buildings include a church a library and even a hostel which takes in runaway teenagers for the smallest of donations far from conventional slab cities like stepping into a post-apocalyptic world number 10 hall stat china if you copy someone's homework there is an unwritten rule that you change your version around a bit to masquerade the fact that it's a duplicate i just wish the creators of hall stat china had heard about that rule when they decided they liked the town of hall stat austria so much that they replicated it brick by brick using a technique called duplicature the austrian version is a unesco world heritage site which contains 6th century alpine houses and streets which are decorated with various homes restaurants and shops with a stunning mountainous backdrop and an ancient salt mine and salt lake nearby it's no wonder the housing developers in china settled on this european gem this isn't the first time that china's made a carbon copy of a beautiful area in a bid to boost tourism and entice residents china has copied no other than london amsterdam and paris within its borders to name a few their version of paris 6 000 miles from the original and nicknamed paris of the east is even fully equipped with its own 354 foot eiffel tower they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery but this might be going too far number nine madmada southern tunisia if you're a fan of unusual architecture or star wars then you need to head down to mad mata in southern tunisia the housing situation in manmada is unique to say the least known as troglodytes the residents inhabit cave-like homes which line the border of a communal pit there are about 1 200 of these unconventional homes still around today and preserved by locals with some unbelievably still in use one place will get a certain fandom excited to star wars fans delight you can actually spend the night in the home of none other than luke skywalker this sandy dwelling was featured in the blockbuster franchise and has since been turned into the hotel city dress understandably cashing in on the popular attraction but why would anyone live in a cave well mainly to hide from the unbearable sun's heat and have some form of moderate and comfortable temperature the bizarre-looking homes have also doubled as fortresses during early attacks from nearby tribes due to its useful panoramic view and as a hideout for resistance fighters when france invaded tunisia interesting how resistance fighters of fact and fiction both stayed in these strange caves number eight shifshow in morocco possibly the bluest city in the world lies in the northwest of morocco the whole city is coated in a light blue paint that makes for a great instagram snap with many of the streets cleaned and painted daily to ensure visiting tourists stay impressed the striking blue complexion of the city is said to represent heaven and the beauty of the sky with others claiming it as a more practical use in keeping mosquitoes away whatever the reason the color certainly leaves an impression an interesting fact about shift shaon is that you can tell someone's economic status from their door when he comes to me good money he make like this one it means he lives by himself if a front door has multiple locks then it's said to be the home of multiple families whereas if the front door has a gate and only one lock on it then the inhabitants are said to be wealthier due to their ability to afford a house all to themselves the mystery behind the city's name is fairly simple and obvious if you speak the local m a zig berber tongue literally translates to horns which is representative of the two horn-like hills above the smurf blue city number 7 roswell when roswell a city in new mexico was allegedly the crash site of a ufo in 1947 it was pushed into the limelight and was subsequently the inspiration for countless hollywood movies and tv shows with independence day even mentioning the crash whilst the town people mayor and wider ufo fanatics insist that alien life did indeed touch down near the city the government decided to shed light on the matter in 1997 in the roswell report the government officials claimed that something did indeed fall out of the sky but it was nothing to do with extraterrestrial life instead it was claimed that a secret spy plane used to spy against the soviets was actually the craft that landed whilst the locals are sticking to their guns it's understandable considering the supposed landing is what makes the city famous and helps boost the economy there's even a museum dedicated to the crash they're surely the last ones to back down and give in the crash site isn't even near roswell anyway it's a full 75 miles from the city with it actually being closer to the village of corona corona coincidence i think not number six oily rocks neft das lari far out in the caspian sea lies a community of people who choose a mostly abandoned oil settlement as their unconventional place to call home the caspian sea which is the largest lake in the world has been exploited for years for its oil and gas resources with it even dating way back to the third and fourth centuries back during soviet times this valuable resource was left upon by companies and local government so oily rocks was born the mostly abandoned network of oil platforms and artificial islands are all connected by a huge 300 kilometers of trestle bridges meaning there are plenty of routes to go for a walk this region with its community being a whopping 55 kilometers from shore was dubbed the land of fire by the persians due to its petroleum and natural gas seepage which is mentioned in many accounts the city even holds a guinness world record as the world's first offshore oil platform number five coma california if you find cemeteries a creepy place to be then don't visit colma california as they are full of them with over one and a half million people buried in the earth but only 1 700 living residents this town in california is full to the brim with 17 cemeteries coma has almost every walk of life covered when it comes to laying people down to their resting place and it doesn't end with people there's a jewish a catholic a greek an italian cemetery for example with even a pet cemetery making the cut but why does such a small town have a ridiculously high amount of dead bodies the town inherited a huge amount of dead bodies due to the minors of the gold rush coming to the town and bringing countless diseases in tow you could no longer bury a body on the homestead or along the wagon trail the high death rate of the miners led to san francisco's 27 cemeteries reaching full capacity tired of the countless corpses the city father said that our land is for the living and not the dead and filed an eviction notice in 1914 and the bodies were transferred to colma the cemeteries are part of everyday life here and are used as regular parks by the residents that halloween here must be fun number four cetanel de las bodegas in the southern part of spain lies a town literally built into the nearby stone cliffs cetinil de las bodegas even has an entire block of houses shaded from the sun thanks to the stoney neighbors whilst this gives a nice cool temperature hidden from the sun the rocks also form the house's stone ceiling and with houses located on top of the cliff it's essentially one big house rock house sandwich the local area was renowned for its wine until the local vineyards and wine trade was erased by the phylloxera insect infestation in the 1960s which had a devastating effect on the whole wine trade across most of europe the full name of the town cetanel de las bodegas goes all the way back to the 15th century with the name thought to come from the roman latin phrase sepatemna hill seven times no which is probably a nod to the town several earlier invasions humans have been thought to have been settled here as long as the stones with a presence in the area dating back to at least the 12th century during the arabic al-mohad period number three hashima island lying nine miles offshore from the japanese city of nagasaki is hashima island a 16-acre piece of land with a past linked to coal world war ii and james bond in the early 1800s coal was found on the japanese island and was quickly exploited by 1959 the island was home to an astounding 5 259 residents but this was not to be for much longer when petroleum gas became popular in the 60s the island and its mining operations were quickly abandoned by 1974 everyone had left the island and because of the rush to leave the island is trapped in time to this day medical equipment and personal belongings are left in the exact place their owners left them the island was used in the 2012 james bond film skyfall and as a result tourism on the island boomed the island has a morbidly dark past during world war ii it was used to forcefully work prisoners of war from korea and china in harsh conditions that were so bad it's thought that over 1 000 workers died on the island as a result of the awful treatment today the island is a unesco world heritage site in 2015 securing its safety and fascinating existence for years to come number 2. lily dale believing in the ability to contact the deceased can be quite a niche belief unless you live in lilly dale that is lily dale is a gated community and the largest center for the spiritualists movement located in a remote area in western new york almost every single one of the couple hundred residents of lilly dale are mediums who speak to the dead founded in there's even a fairy tale where you'll pass countless gnomes fairy homes and pretty flowers on your strolls the place is so picturesque and quaint that it makes for a great day out regardless of if you're a skeptic number 1. cooper petty an opal gemstone contains a kaleidoscope of different colors and has the power to make its finder a very wealthy person mining for opal can be a lonely existence with the underground australian town of cooper petty being a good example of that the town is in the middle of australia and is 500 kilometers from the closest town of port augusta the whole town lives off the opel gemstone with people mining buying and selling the gemstone to make an income living underground may seem bizarre but it has plenty of benefits the temperature of the cave-like homes only reaches a consistent comfy range of between 21 and 24 degrees celsius whereas above ground can get to a fire-like 53 degrees celsius aside from being safe from the australian climate outside your door extending your cave home is an easy and sometimes money-making project using machines used to mine for opel the homeowners just dig into the sides of their homes if they want a larger front room or an added bathroom no planning permission needed here on their digging for an extension they can also come across more opal gemstones making the whole extension very worthwhile the opal gemstone might ring a few bells to those who have seen the recent adam sandler movie uncut gems you probably realize by now that the world can be a wild and wacky place which was your favorite
