century BC evidence from the man's wounds suggested that he was killed and his corpse was thrown into the bog where his body was naturally preserved for more than 2,000 years in fact the man's feet and hands were so well preserved that his fingerprints were successfully recorded the body has been on display since 1955 at the most God Museum in Denmark the Voynich manuscript this was originally a 250 page book that was written in a language no one could read it was discovered in 1912 by a seller of antique books named Wilfrid Voynich and is named after the vellum upon which the term is written has been radiocarbon dated to the early 15th century most of the pages have diagrams images that include descriptions of medicinal herbs and zodiac symbols the manuscript has been studied many times over the years by cryptographers and codebreakers but no one has completely deciphered the mysterious language although Stephen box a British linguistics expert claims to have deciphered 14 of the manuscripts characters and from that effort he thinks the manuscript may be a discourse on nature possibly written in an Asian or Near Eastern language [Music] the Plain of Jars this megalithic archaeological landscape is found in Laos and is considered one of the most important prehistoric sites found in Southeast Asia it's scattered with stone vessels that measure up to 3 meters thousands of these jars have been found in clusters that can range a number from a single item to several hundred of them experts say the vessels date back to the iron age between 500 BC and 500 AD and were likely associated with prehistoric burial practices and rites cremated human remains including bones and teeth fragments have been found in the jaws along with stone disks that are thought to be grave markers the copper scroll an ancient copper scroll was discovered in 1952 at Qumran an archaeological site on the West Bank it's thought to date back around 2,000 years and is actually one of the Dead Sea Scrolls but this one differs in that it is not written on papyrus of parchment this scroll is made of copper and does not contain a literary work inscribed of various locations which might indicate where massive amounts of gold and silver might be hidden or buried researchers think the scroll might have been hidden by locals to keep it out of the hands of the Romans during the region's frequent rebellions against the empire mummy dearest now would you guess that the world's best preserved mummy is found in Egypt but if you guess that you'd be wrong because it's actually in China shinzou was known as the Lady of Dai and her tomb was accidentally discovered by workers who were trying to find an air-raid shelter experts found a body wrapped in 20 layers of silk that was sealed inside four coffins that contained charcoal then sealed with clay all of which provided an area so watertight that even bacteria could not enter and all that preparation paid off after 2100 years the lady's body still had soft skin flexible limbs and all of her own hair scientists said that even her internal organs remained intact Atacama giant located in the Atacama Desert of Chile you'll find the world's largest prehistoric anthropomorphic or human-like figure it measures around 390 feet high and its creation is estimated at between 1000 to 1400 AD and locals there believe it represents a deity experts think the figure could have been used as a type of early astronomical calendar that helped to determine crop cycles did you know that over the past 3 decades around 5000 geoglyphs have been found in the Atacama Desert 20 thousand year old pyramid evidence of a pyramid that is around 20,000 years old may have been found in Indonesia according to experts locals in an area of West Java revered the area because it is thought to contain an ancient pyramid gunung padang is a megalithic site located south of jakarta that was discovered in 1914 and is said to be the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia chunks of volcanic rubble can be found on the hillside which geologists say might be covering up a pyramid underneath its purpose is still unclear but the pyramid is thought to have been constructed for astronomical functions or perhaps for worship man-made structures are said to have been detected some 15 metres below by ground-penetrating radar and rock found around 4 meters below ground has been dated at more than 12,000 years old that theory does have some skeptics but the research continues masada the hebrew name of this ancient fortress translates as stronghold or mountain cask and that is an apt description for this fortified complex located at the western shores of the Dead Sea and Israel experts say the fortress dates to approximately the fifth century BC when it was built by Herod the Great it's located on an isolated rock plateau in the midst of deep gorges that provide a natural defense containing a storehouse barracks armory and a palace Masada is an ingenious feat of Engineering today it is one of Israel's most popular tourist destinations but it might best be known for a battle between Roman forces and more than 900 Jewish zealots in 73 ad which ended with the mass suicide of those zealots Nubian pyramids that pyramids of Sudan are located more than a hundred miles south of Khartoum the capital of the country the structures are found in the ancient city of Marouane and it was once the center of the Koosh Kingdom and remained a power until the 4th century AD the pyramid stand up to a hundred feet tall and the oldest buildings are thought to date back to around 720 BC experts note that all the pyramids spared decorations that display the influences of ancient Egypt Greece and Rome and say the area's most impressive structures are found at the acropolis of narrowing while smaller in size than the Egyptian counterparts the Nubian pyramids have a similar shape rising from our foundation to a narrow point but some of these pyramids have strange flat tops and that was a result of the explorers who pillaged the area during the 19th century and reduced some sections to rubble Machu Picchu this famous lost city is found almost 8000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru and can only be accessed by train or a four-day Trek Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century possibly as an estate for an Incan Emperor it was abandoned around the time of the Spanish conquest although locals were aware of the city's existence it remained unknown to the Spanish during that period and it remained largely unknown to the world until 1911 when US historian Hiram Bingham brought it to the world's attention Machu Picchu was named one of the new seven wonders of the world in 2007 buried Tallis now this picture looks like it could have come from an Indiana Jones movie while the guy doesn't have a trademark fedora hat or bullwhip he does have a uniform identifying him as a soldier in the Iraqi military and the story of how he came to examine some ancient Assyrian stone sculptures is not too far removed from an action-adventure movie in 2014 Isis militants destroyed Iraq's neaby Yunus shrine in Massoud which is said to contain the tomb of Jonah or Yanis as he has identified in the Quran but the location was later retaken by Iraqi forces which allowed archaeologists to locate a palace underneath the ruins that went and discovered for some 2600 years experts found that Isis militants had dug tunnels deep below the shrine in an effort to find loot and those tunnels led to the ancient buried Palace sculptures carved into the tunnel walls of thought to date back around 2,000 years and depict ancient Assyrian Demma goddesses hopefully a curse was not placed in there with but a full excavation is underway and it's a race against time because the tunnels were not built by professionals and they could collapse at any time sealing off the palace Nazca lines these well-known ancient geoglyphs were found in the Nazca desert of Peru and were first referenced in print in 1553 by a Spanish conquistador the largest figures measure up to 370 feet long and the style ranges from simple to complex simple lines and geometric shapes give way to designs of humans and animals and that gives way to shapes resembling trees and flowers while experts have determined the geoglyphs were created by the Nazca culture between 500 BC to 500 AD there are still various theories as to what purpose the designs fulfilled some sources indicate the patterns may have held a religious significance of some sort and contrary to common belief it don't need to be in an airplane to view the lines and figures they can be seen from surrounding foothills rosetta stone this famous artifact was discovered by a French soldier in 1799 during the Napoleonic Wars in Egypt in 1801 British forces defeated the French in Egypt and took the massive stone into their possession the stone was carved
