there are interesting and exciting abandoned objects in locations all over the world and we've covered many of them on this channel before most of those objects and places are comparatively small we always need land to build on and so when an enormous building area or object becomes obsolete it's usually demolished to make way for something new as with everything though there are exceptions to that rule and so today we're looking at some of the most incredible large-scale abandoned locations in the world [Music] you've probably never given much consideration to the question of where conks go to die when their time comes but based on this enormous pile of shells in the british virgin islands we think we might have found the answer in all honesty the conchs didn't end up here by choice the shells are disposed of here after they're caught by fishermen and over the years the collection of pink shells has turned into a series of hills made of shell covering every scrap of land along the coastline the practice of fishing for conch in this area dates back to the earliest settlers 800 years ago back then the shells were tossed into the seabed after so many years the piles stand almost 40 feet above the water line at their tallest points while living conchs tend to avoid coming close to the unorthodox graveyard it's become a nursery for turtles stingrays and sharks all of whom come here to birth their young in the relative safety of the shell stacks it's not totally abandoned because fishermen still pass through here to dump shells but it's a strange lifeless mass made from creatures that were once living [Music] if we said the words underwater ballroom to you you'd probably pick up on a couple of problems immediately firstly wearing an oxygen mask with your suit or ball gown would ruin your look secondly it's very difficult to dance underwater that didn't stop an underwater ballroom being built beneath the lake of a mansion in godalming england though the ballroom is one of many strange features at lee park estate which was once the property of master fraudster whitaker wright a 19th century con man who got rich by mishandling his customers investments wright's mansion had 32 rooms 9 000 acres of land and three artificial lakes created upon that land the ballroom sits beneath one of those lakes protected from the water by a glass dome whether anyone ever danced in here is unknown it's highly likely that wright built it purely because he could and he wanted to show off his wealth in 1952 long after wright had passed away the mansion burned to the ground in a fire leaving the underwater ballroom as one of the few original features of the estate that's still standing today as the nazis spread across europe during the second world war they dug tunnels everywhere they went you'll still find german-made tunnels in france the netherlands and several other european nations but they started the practice in their home country and that's where you'll still find the largest of the remaining tunnels today these weren't just general purpose tunnels though this network of underground chambers was intended for the use of hitler himself along with his trusted inner circle the tunnel system which is so large in places that it might be better described as an underground city runs directly beneath the stunning german resort town of berkstesgaden one of the main entrances can be found at the berkoff which was hitler's alpine holiday home in the same area rather than being built to advance the nazi cause though it's thought that these tunnels were built in a panic the allies were making significant gains in italy and north africa by 1943 and the nazis ordered tunnels to be dug further and further into the mountains in case they had to go there to hide out and regroup as we all know they never got that chance today the bunkers are officially sealed off but that hasn't stopped a few intrepid photographers gaining access to them [Music] you can't afford to take any chances with something as important as a federal reserve it's where the majority of your country's most valuable assets are kept and without it your nation would be bankrupt the soviet union was definitely keen on the idea of never letting its enemies know where it stored its reserves so it found the perfect hiding place for them it's just over 140 miles away from moscow and a staggering 400 feet below the ground today the former storage facility is abandoned without much to look at inside it it appears as a colossal human-made cavern this place was once central to what was known in the ussr as rose reserve a way of guaranteeing the union's future stability it must have cost millions if not billions of dollars to dig this gigantic facility out so far below the ground and then stock it there's a small village above the ground at this location and the villagers have no idea what exists below their feet in some of the hallways old conveyor belts for moving goods still stand in silence we presumed the entire reserve had run dry by the time the uss dissolved but this might once have been the richest cave of treasures on the planet at first glance you might think that this next abandoned location is the famous pentagon building in the united states of america obviously the american pentagon is not abandoned the chinese duplicate of it however is it's believed that it cost the chinese more than 200 million dollars to build this obvious replica in 2009 and yet it's scarcely ever been used and now it's totally abandoned given that it covers an area of over 5 million square feet it's a wonder that it wasn't bought up by the shanghai disney park which it sits on the outskirts of rather than being a military facility this was intended to become the pentagonal mart and would have been the largest shopping mall in shanghai various reasons have been given for its abandonment ranging from a plain and simple case of the owners of the facility trying to charge too much in rent to the layout being poorly conceived and ill-suited to the creation of individual stores inside it it was hoped that the opening of disney might finally breathe light into the project but that hasn't happened and the ultimate fate of the mart is now unclear royal hotel was built during an era when japanese residents didn't have the luxury of being able to travel abroad on location with that option off the table the government did its best to bring a sense of life abroad to japan and creations like this hotel on the stunning island of hachijojima represented their best attempt during the 1950s and 1960s this was the ultimate destination for wealthy middle and upper class japanese families who gathered here to enjoy the weather and admire the greek style statues and french baroque style architecture of the resort it was even said that this was japan's version of the paradise island of hawaii best of all it could be reached by a ferry service that ran from tokyo unfortunately for those who ran the hotel the japanese eventually regained their ability to travel abroad and see the rest of the world for real instead of the hotel's imitations business dropped off sharply and although it raged against the dying of the light it was finally forced to close for the last time in 2006 after multiple failed relaunches nature has now reclaimed much of the site swallowing up most of the facilities that have been left behind [Music] abandoned silos aren't hard to find but there's something a little different about henninger tourm in frankfort germany perhaps it's the fact that back when it was open it had a pair of revolving restaurants on its roof the restaurants had very little to do with the silo beneath them that was built during the late 1950s by carl liser for the henninger brewery and used to store up to 16 000 tons of barley at a time for use in the brewing process he was quick to realize the tourism potential of having a 270 foot tall high silo in the middle of a busy city though and so he added a pair of restaurants and an observation deck to his design in order to cash in on the superb view the more expensive and glamorous of the two restaurants also hosted a winter garden for people to browse at their leisure for many years it played host to frankfort's great and good but by 2002 the silo was no longer required and the restaurants were unable to maintain the cost of running the building on their own it's been a lonely place ever since many of us dream of owning our own private island if you're one of them perhaps you could try to claim mcnabb's island in nova scotia canada it's abandoned today but that hasn't always been the case in fact there are decaying relics of its former life all over the land once upon a time families lived here along with a few members of the military and a small soda factory the story of the island's permanent occupation begins with peter mcnabb who settled here with his family during the 1780s he'd fished on the island before and liked it so much that he decided to stay he brought his extended family here too and so generation after generation of mcnabb's lived and thrived here until the last of them died of old age in 1934 with the mcnabbs gone the military moved in and used it as a base during the second world war but left as soon as the conflict was over as for the soda factory nobody knows how it got there some people speculate that it wasn't even a soda factory at all instead they believe that it's where the mcnabb family brewed black market alcohol as a means of sustaining themselves during the prohibition era hitler's nazi forces never quite made it as far as the british mainland during the second world war having been beaten back during the infamous battle of britain they did however occupy all of the british channel islands in the body of water between england and france and stayed there for some time while they were there they set up massive fortifications and seemed particularly keen on turning the small island of jersey into one enormous fort between 1940 and 1945 this was the most fortified island in all of europe there were already some usable defensive structures on the island dating back to the napoleonic and english civil wars so the nazis strengthened them and added a few new ones of their own the occupying forces are long gone but many of the structures they built still remain the island is full of secret underground bunkers hidden gun emplacements intimidating observation towers and tunnels so far below the ground that they'd be unaffected by an attack from the air it isn't without reason that the british government used to refer to jersey as hitler's island mega fortress we're going to move around the british coast now to take a look at another island fort this one's up for sale if anybody wants to buy it the strange-looking circular structure is known as stack rock fort and you'll find it in milford haven in wales the idea of building a sea defense off the coast of wales had been considered by the british since thomas cromwell proposed it in 1539 but they didn't get around to it until the government felt that there was an imminent threat of invasion by the french under napoleon iii during the 19th century building work was completed in 1852 but the government's paranoia was unfounded the attack never came and even if it had approaching via wales would be an illogical way to invade britain from a strategic point of view the fort was scarcely used even in the first world war and was officially disarmed in 1929 it's been formally up for sale since 1932 but has never found a buyer perhaps the lack of any water storage sewage or power facilities has something to do with that when businessman captain william winslow bought a plot of land in warwick rhode island in 1847 his initial plan was to create a family restaurant with a few basic amusements to keep children entertained over time that humble idea expanded and became rocky point amusement park the focus shifted from the restaurant to the fairground rides and by the 1950s it was attracting more visitors than any other tourist attraction in all of rhode island attractions like the white knuckle corkscrew loop roller coaster were as thrilling as rides got back in that era and the 60 miles per hour free fall drop was years ahead of its time sadly the park didn't manage to stay ahead of the times and by the 1990s it looked dated compared to the quality of attractions available at disney or universal the park closed its doors in 1994. and the majority of the rides have been demolished once upon a time this park was such a big deal that its ballroom hosted concerts by the red hot chili peppers but all you'll hear at the site today is the sound of silence [Music] moving across the usa to south dakota we find black hills ordnance depot which was built for a grander purpose than the one it now enjoys during its heyday this was an essential storage facility for the ordinance corps of the us army built in response to the unprecedented demands of the country's participation in the second world war what's remarkable about the now abandoned site isn't so much the abandoned facilities but the abandoned homes next to them when it was active the site was so large that the people who worked here had to be built accommodation next to it over time that accommodation became a living city containing a church a hospital a swimming pool and even a theater and a bowling alley after the war came to an end black hills was used as a testing location for chemical weapons like sarin and mustard gas we hope everyone had moved out by then even that unpleasant purpose came to an end and the military was gone by 1967. we understand that a property developer has recently acquired the buildings and intends to turn them into apocalypse-proof doomsday shelters subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications and you will be the first to know when a new video comes out thank you for watching and see you soon
