in a recent video i talked about how i moved away from adobe photoshop completely i've been using affinity photo for photo editing and post processing but it hasn't been what i needed for digital illustration instead for digital painting i've been using clip studio paint clip studio is one of the most robust digital illustration tools i have ever experienced often times when working in a program you'll find that either you have to kind of fight the program to get it to do what you want or the program will work with you seamlessly clip studio not only works with you but it also has tools that can elevate and completely change your workflow for the better in this video i want to highlight what makes clip studio stand out from other painting software and why it's become my favorite digital illustration tool if you'd like a follow-up video on how to get started in clip studio paint and how to navigate the program as a beginner let me know in the comments and make sure to subscribe so you don't miss that video in the future let's start with some of the layer options if you're familiar with other digital art software you likely have a handle on how layers work you can make new ones in order to do things like draw your line art and then color underneath of it there are a few things that clip studio can do with layers that will make them work much harder and smarter for you first off clipping masks this isn't a feature unique to clip studio paint but if you're not using clipping masks you are missing out on a powerful feature i feel like most digital artists know how clipping masks work but i still encounter plenty of people who don't clipping masks let you draw on a layer and then clip a second layer to the pixels on the first on the second layer your drawing will only display on the pixels that were filled in on the first layer it's super handy for coloring and shading and really anything where you want your color to be contained within an already predetermined shape because you never have to worry about coloring outside the lines secondly clip studio allows you to set a layer as a reference layer and that lets you do so many cool things by making a new layer above or below your reference layer and then setting your brush or bucket fill tool to the refer to reference layer setting you can easily color within your line art on a different layer but the program still knows where those lines were from your reference layer speaking of the bucket fill tool have you ever gotten one of these open boys that completely ruins your fill or magic wand selection that's so annoying isn't it but in clip studio it can automatically detect these and treat them as if they were a closed line also if you ever bucket filled something and then scaled in to realize there's still jaggy white pixels between the fill color and the line not in clip studio there's a setting called area scaling that will overfill into the liner a little so your colors will always go up through the edge of the line art combining reference layers with the close gap feature and the area scaling feature means that you can color your line art faster than i just said color your line art let's talk about one more layer feature vector layers clip studio paint has some of the best vector brush tools i have ever seen other programs can simulate a raster brush texture over top of a vector path sure but they always have weird artifacts to them and not only is clip studio paint's ability to display vector lines with raster brush textures immaculate you can go back and modify that brush line in all sorts of ways like merging two lines together widening or thinning a line simplifying the line so that there are fewer vector node points on it and you can even reposition portions of that line simply by drawing along it the vector eraser has the option to erase lines up to the intersection which makes quick alert quick lurk which makes quick work of cleaning up lines speaking of useful eraser options have you ever had a weird stray mark on a layer that you can't find i've totally never been in that position before what are you talking about i don't use too many layers the erase multiple layers tool will find it for you you can also use this tool to cut something out of a drawing even if it's got line art coloring shading on all different layers this tool will do the trick no problem so i don't use this tool particularly often but you can drag in 3d models of items and characters and pose them around for reference this is great for proportions and also for perspective you can also move individual limbs and even fingers this is a little bit finicky but it's still useful here's some quickies the lasso fill tool one of the quickest ways to fill in a large shape is to lasso it and then use the fill tool to fill it in well this tool cuts all of that down to one step it's just one of those quality of life things that makes things so much faster here's one that i just discovered recently do you have a reference image that you want to be able to display on the side all the time or even very quickly pick colors off of it clip studio has the sub view window you can even pop multiple images into it and flip between them like pages unfortunately i haven't found a way to display more than one image at once but it's pretty easy to flip between them and if you want to pull colors off of it while you're working you can click this eyedropper tool and automatically grab colors from wherever you're clicking this is great for drawing an oc or another character based on a model sheet or just pulling from a palette from an image you like if you've learned something new so far hit the like button for me and let's get on to my favorite clip studio paint feature which is the clip studio paint brush engine oh my god so clip studio paint has great brushes right off the bat most of my work is done with the design pencil brush that comes loaded with the program i use this brush for sketching but also for all of my line work however if you want to make your own brush or play around with some of the pre-made brushes or install some brushes the settings are incredibly vast in ways that i honestly haven't even yet fully figured out for instance you can make a ribbon brush that will seamlessly and fluidly follow the direction of your brush you can kind of do something similar in photoshop but it ends up looking really choppy and i've never seen another program where the brush follows around curves this nicely you can change the brush stabilization per brush and you can change how much it stabilizes and also how much it post corrects you can also find some stunning brushes using the clip studio asset store sometimes you'll have to pay gold for them which is clip studio's currency that you can buy using real money but tons of great brushes are free and lots of them do some really unexpected things somebody's made this finger brush that's gotten really popular it won't draw hands for you but it helps in figuring out the pose of the fingers if that's something you struggle with i haven't quite figured it out let's be honest aside from the design pencil some of my favorites are these two marker and blending brush sets almost all of my coloring and shading is done with the marker brush from this set some of my other favorites are this set of hair highlight brushes that just make adding highlights to the hair really quick this brush called rainbowy that adds like a rainbow looking scanline thing these crystal chard looking brushes that i've been using everywhere lately and this vapor glitches pen for some sweet chromatic aberration effects okay this was a lot i put timestamps in the description for all of these tips so you can easily find them again if you want do you have any favorite tools in clip studio paint that i didn't touch on let me know down below if you missed my last video check it out over here i've been painting on this glow-in-the-dark paper that i'm completely obsessed with i don't have a problem
