before he was the danger the one who knocks or even Heisenberg at all Walter White was just the main character of that meth show on AMC that my co-worker told me was pretty alright it's hard to imagine but there was a time when Breaking Bad wasn't celebrated everywhere as one of the greatest TV shows ever made there's 118 elements on the periodic table but I've got 107 facts here for you this is 107 facts about breaking bad welcome to cinematica you're in a home for all Doctor Who Harry Potter we'll be going through all your favorites and favorites you didn't even know you had before we begin we publish new videos every week so be sure to subscribe to our Channel and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos and with that out of the way let's get into the video number one Breaking Bad was written and created by Vince Gilligan before Breaking Bad he had written a number of X-Files episodes number two the whole premise of Breaking Bad came about as a joke between Gilligan and fellow X-Files writer Thomas schnauss at the time they were both unemployed and joked that they should travel around the country cooking and selling meth out of an RV number three even before the meth angle came into the mix Gilligan was eager to write a story about a protagonist becoming an antagonist he wanted to do something different from what he described as the self-imposed stasis of TV characters that kept them the same for decades number four when he came up with Walter White Gilligan wanted his journey to be from Mr Chips to Scarface for the record Mr Chips is a square teacher character there from an old story from the 1930s Goodbye Mr Chips number five if you know Scarface then you'll recognize a few unfriendly faces in Breaking Bad Stephen Bauer and Mark morgolis played drug kingpins Don Eladio vuente and Hector Salamanca respectively both were also in Scarface Bauer played Tony Montana's right-hand man Manny and Margolis played Sosa's right-hand man Alberto number six the title itself breaking bad is Even older than Mr Chips the phrase dates as far back as 1919. at the time it meant something more along the lines of going bad in the sense of failure number seven over time Breaking Bad grew to be a colloquialism localized to the South there the phrase grew to what we think of now meaning raising hell and having a more violent connotation number eight while the phrase is more popular now thanks to the show it wasn't always that way Vince Gilligan picked the title thinking it was more known and widespread than it really was he had grown up saying it in Virginia number nine title aside Gilligan feared that the show's unconventional and at the time edgier premise would be difficult to sell he knew that it needed to rely on other factors to make the show successful from its cast to its cinematography number 10 when preparing to write Breaking Bad Gilligan did tons of research by reading books written by recovering drug addicts he and his writers even took a former drug dealer out to lunch to get a better picture of the ins and outs of the drug trade all to make Breaking Bad feel that much more authentic number 11. did you know that the MythBusters did manage to put together a similar machine gun rake the one Walter used in the finale of Breaking Bad we don't really know how Walt managed it himself but it is manageable number 12. across all five seasons Breaking Bad managed to pull in 16 different Prime Time Emmys Cranston got his own as I said before but aside from the nominations the show itself won for Outstanding Drama Series in 2013 and 2014. number 13 between 2006 and 2007 with the concept and the pilot episode down it came time for Gilligan to pitch Breaking Bad he approached Sony Pictures Television with the pitch and they were all on Board number 14. from there Sony set up a number of meetings between Gilligan and various cable networks including Showtime Showtime ultimately passed on Breaking Bad because of the similarities to another one of their shows weeds number 15 in Weeds a single mother of two boys starts selling pot to support them the premise is so similar that had he known about the show Vince Gilligan would have scrapped Breaking Bad altogether number 16. from there Sony set up meetings with HBO TNT and FX HBO and TNT both gave Breaking Bad a hard pass but FX went as far as to discuss producing a pilot number 17. however FX eventually turned it down at the time FX already had three different male-centric crime dramas on their Network so they went with the female Centric dirt over Breaking Bad number 18 by the time Gilligan got to meet up with the folks at AMC he had all but given up on his project even when his Agents set him up with the meaning to discuss it Gilligan wasn't sure which project he was referring to number 19. even with a meeting secured Gilligan wasn't optimistic about the network either he thought of AMC as that channel where they play short circuit 210 10 times a day at the time AMC was looking to make original content however Mad Men was still just a glint in their eyes and mega Hit The Walking Dead was still a number of years off number 20 and so AMC decided to go for Breaking Bad from then it took about a year for them to buy the rights from FX before they could properly start working on the show number 21 as Gilligan said casting the characters of Breaking Bad would make or break the show in hindsight there was no better choice for Walter White than Bryan Cranston he and Vince Gilligan had worked together on an episode of The X-Files number 22 at the time Cranston was best known as Hal the dad from Malcolm in the Middle because of cranston's then squeaky clean image AMC's bigwigs weren't sure if he was a good choice for the role number 23 for some extra star power AMC looked to movies for their Walter White movie stars like John Cusack and Matthew Broderick were approached with the role but both turned it down number 24 ultimately AMC was convinced Cranston was the right choice when they saw his performance in The X-Files in the episode drive he played a terminally ill white supremacist who takes Fox Mulder hostage a far cry from Hal number 25 Walter White was originally written to be 40 years old but the writers decided to age the character up to 50 as that age felt more appropriate for a midlife crisis number 26 Bryan Cranston was instrumental in helping create Walter White when writing the character Gilligan left much of his backstory blank so Cranston wrote much of Walt's backstory himself number 27 Cranston helped determine Walter's look too alongside costume designer Kathleen de toro number 28 the two made Walt's wardrobe a series of neutral greens and Browns to make him look as Bland and boring as possible number 29 clothes aside Cranston also collaborated with Breaking Bad makeup artist Frida Valenzuela to hone these smaller details of his appearance number 30 Cranston and Valenzuela worked together to specifically craft Walter's mustache which Cranston has described as impotent and a dead caterpillar number 31 on his own Cranston put on 10 pounds to play Walter and died the natural red highlights in his hair brown just to make Walter that much less interesting number 32 for how Walt carries himself Cranston lightly based his performance off his father's walk as an old man he described it as a little hunched over never erect as if the weight of the world is on the man's shoulders number 33 of course Breaking Bad isn't just Walt's Story Jesse Pinkman is in there too and he's played by Aaron Paul Paul also appeared on an episode of The X-Files Lord of the Flies number 34 like Cranston the decision makers weren't convinced that Aaron Paul was the right choice to play Jesse at the time they said he was both too old and too much of a pretty boy to be cooking meth number 35 sure enough Paul's audition changed Gilligan's mind and the X-Files connection helped too number 32 6 at one point the casting choice for Jesse was down to just two actors Aaron Paul and Penn Badgley these days you probably know Penn Badgley best as the main character of Netflix's you number 37 also Jesse pinkman's original name in the pilot was Marion Allen Dupree in these early versions other characters referred to him by his last name number 38 originally Jesse was going to be killed off at the end of the first season in a botched drug deal Vince Gilligan said that Jesse was supposed to be Walt's introduction to the criminal world and his death would be a tremendous source of guilt for him number 39 however it only took two episodes for Gilligan to change his mind he loved Paul's performance so much that he decided it would be a mistake to kill off this character number 40. Walt's DEA brother-in-law Hank Schroeder almost saw the same thing happen to him Hank was also in the running to be killed off by the end of the first season number 41 of course Hank is played by Dean Norris Norris also appeared on the X-Files as a cop even in episode F in masculata number 42 from the beginning of the show Hank was only supposed to be comic relief Like Jesse though his character grew to be more instrumental for the greater plot number 43 from the outset of the show Vince Gilligan was set on killing off one of the major characters by the end of the first season he wanted to close the season out with a bombastic ballsy moment number 44. however while Breaking Bad was originally ordered as Nine episodes the first season only ended up consisting of seven the season was cut down to size due to the massive writers strike between 2007 and 2008 number 45 with the lowered episode count Gilligan decided to scrap the whole idea of killing a major character number 46 Peter gold writer and producer on Breaking Bad has said that the writer's strike saved the show and that if they'd produce those two originally planned episodes in the first season the show would have gone down a different path and likely been canceled by the third season number 47 The Writer's strike was so impactful that it also delayed the production of the second season number 48 Breaking Bad was originally set in Riverside California however to cut costs Sony suggested that they film in Albuquerque New Mexico number 49 filming in Albuquerque Gilligan was concerned about the Sandia Mountains appearing in the background every time they shot towards the east So to avoid the hassle they simply changed the setting of the story to Albuquerque number 50. the white residence in Albuquerque 308 Negra Arroyo Lane is somebody's actual house people living there have had to deal with overzealous Breaking Bad fans throwing Pizza onto their roof number 51 of course this isn't just some random prank it's a reference to the moment in the show where Walter yes throws a pizza onto the roof turns out that that was an accident but the shot was so great that they went with it they even used the roof Pizza as an establishing shot later in the episode number 52 also it turns out that the real-life DEA office in Albuquerque was just about a half mile down the road from Albuquerque Studios where lots of Breaking Bad was filmed number 53 Walt's wife Skyler white is played by Anna Gunn number 54 as the show progressed Anna Gunn herself received tons of hate online for things that Skyler the character did in the show she even wrote an op-ed in the New York Times about the hate that she got number 55 if you can believe it Gunn never appeared on the X-Files but she Brian Cranston and Bob Odenkirk all had guest spots on Seinfeld at some point number 56 yes of course Bob Odin Kirk plays Saul Goodman before he took the role he was bankrupt his then agent told him to say no to the part but Odenkirk ignored the advice because he saw that Breaking Bad was developing a following number 57 Odenkirk did worry about one detail though reading the character based on the name Odenkirk told Gilligan that because he wasn't Jewish he wasn't sure he'd be the right casting choice for Goodman sure enough Gilligan assured him that Goodman wasn't actually Jewish and the name was just a fake to bring in more clients see Better Call Saul for way more details number 58 in fact the name Saul Goodman is a play on words it comes from it's all good man the name was coined by Vince Gilligan figuring that the character would pick it as an easy way for his prospective clients to remember him number 59 while Gilligan came up with the name a few details were all Odenkirk he based his portrayal of the character on Hollywood agents Ari Emmanuel and Robert Evans also Saul Goodman men's comb over haircut was his idea number 60 when filming the finale of season 2 Bob Odenkirk had a scheduling conflict so Gilligan and the writers created the character Mike ehrmantraut as a substitute for the episode number 61 Mike ehrmantraut is played by Jonathan Banks number 62 Betsy Brandt plays Marie Skyler's sister and Hank's wife number 63 rant was actually pregnant during the filming of season two once she reached the same level of pregnancy that Skyler was they would use shots of Brant's belly as Skyler's number 64. if you've never noticed Marie is just about always wearing purple Gilligan has said that the color purple is meant to symbolize that Marie is being misled while the character herself would say that it represents loyalty number 65. in fact there's lots of color work in Breaking Bad for example Jesse is regularly shown in red early on to symbolize his aggression and short temper blue symbolizes Purity both literally and in terms of the meth and metaphorically Skyler wears blue because she has no idea what Walt is up to number 66 and of course Mexico is yellow it's a meme at this point but the yellow was meant to symbolize the danger of the drug business even the uniforms of Los Pollos Hermanos are yellow number 67. of course Los Pollos Hermanos is run by Gustavo Fring played by Giancarlo Esposito number 68. it's hard to believe that arguably the most iconic Breaking Bad villain almost never made the show he was originally introduced as a replacement for tuko Salamanca because Raymond Cruz who played tuko was leaving the show due to scheduling conflict number 69 Esposito only agreed to continue playing Gus if the character would become an integral part of the story not just a sporadically appearing guest villain as he'd originally been written number 70 RJ midi plays Walter Jr AKA Flynn number 71 like his character RJ midi also has cerebral palsy however his condition is not as severe as Walter Jr's for the role midi learned to walk with crutches and also slowed his speech down number 72 again for the sake of cost efficiency Breaking Bad was largely filmed on 35 millimeter film The Crew would occasionally film digitally for different angles and specific shots like time lapses and point of view shots number 73 if you look closely POV shots are a staple of Breaking Bad just about every episode has a point of view shot from within a small space such as a car trunk crawl space and even from within appliances like microwaves and refrigerators number 74 despite efforts to keep the budget from ballooning each episode of Breaking Bad reportedly cost an average of 3 million dollars number 75 Breaking Bad debuted on January 20th 2008 the same night of the NFC and AFC championships of the NFL playoffs number 76 this was no coincidence AMC intentionally chose this date optimistic that they would capture that runoff male audience after the widely watched football games ended number 77 well their plan totally backfired both football games ran long cutting into breaking bad's time slot while 1.4 million people tuned in to watch the pilot it was a smaller number than AMC had been hoping for number 78 middling ratings would follow Breaking Bad throughout the first three seasons however it did Buck the usual television trend of declining viewership slowly but surely breaking bad's numbers were climbing number 79 ratings aside Breaking Bad received tons of Praise from critics the show was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys number 80 Brian Cranston actually won the 2008-2009 and 2010 Emmys for outstanding lead actor in a drama series that covers breaking bad's first three seasons number 81 despite the praise things were starting to look dire for Breaking Bad by the end of the third season in 2010 AMC was already discussing with Sony and Vince Gilligan the possibility that the third season would be breaking bad's last number 82 things were so Bleak that Sony even approached FX to work out the possibility of their Network airing two more seasons sure enough once they heard that news AMC changed their mind and how held on to Breaking bad's rights number 83 however seeing how jumpy AMC had been Sony continued shopping around anyway at the same time Netflix was also on the prowl for additional material to put onto their service sure enough Sony and Netflix struck a deal to put the first three seasons of Breaking Bad onto the streaming service before the fourth season aired number 84. well Netflix breathed new life into the series Breaking Bad popped off and was heavily binged by Netflix users to this day Breaking Bad is considered to be the first show known to receive a Netflix Boost number 85 season 4 of Breaking Bad debuted on July 17 2011 and was watched by 2.58 million people that's quite a jump from the 1.95 million viewers for season 3's Premiere and the biggest growth for the show that far number 86 despite the shot in the ratings are Vince Gilligan decided to end the show with the fifth season however the fifth season would be a doozy number 87 season 5 5 would be 16 episodes split up into two different eight episode halves originally AMC actually pushed for a truncated season of only six to seven episodes instead of the usual 13 of the last few seasons number 88 however Gilligan and the producers wouldn't play ball insisted on more and Sony once again went shopping if AMC didn't relent sure enough they did number 89 of course both halves of season 5 saw increasing viewership culminating in a massive 10.28 million viewers of the series finale on September 29 2013. number 90 when it came to the actual chemistry of the show Gilligan and the producers wanted to be as accurate as possible so they brought in the help of Donna Nelson a professor of organic chemistry at University of Oklahoma number 91 Nelson a fan of the show offered help early on after seeing it while she was never on set Gilligan would send scripts her way to make sure that what they had written was accurate sometimes she even wrote Dialogue herself number 92 aside from running through script Nelson would also write chemical equations and draw up chemical structures for them to use as props in the show number 93 before Nelson Gilligan did manage to get away with his own research because at that point all of the heavy chemistry related dialogue was Walt explaining things to his high school students and Jesse number 94 Cranston did his research too he paid a visit to the University of Southern California chemistry Department to learn which Erlenmeyer flasks would be the right choice to cook method number 95 Nelson worked remotely but there was at least one chemistry expert on set Walt's former boss and car wash owner bogged in he is played by Mary Stan who has a PHD in chemistry Number 96 Walter White's Alias Heisenberg is a reference to Werner Heisenberg a theoretical physicist and the creator of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle which states that you cannot tell the speed and direction of a particle at the same time number 97 all of the writers research paid off the cooking methods you see on the show are real in early episodes of the show you'll see a classic meth making process called the nagai method this process goes back to a Japanese scientist who first synthesized meth this way in the 1890s number 98 the nagai method is one of the more popularly known ways to cook meth it relies on pseudoephedrine as a major part of the chemical process and that's why pseudoephedrine is so regulated at the pharmacy number 99 Walt runs into the same issue so he switches over to a fennel to propanone or P2P based reaction as a substitute this method was popular with bikers from the 1960s through 80s where meth got the nickname crank from bikers hiding it in their crankshafts for transport number 100 both methods are portrayed accurately but how about that blue coloring Well turns out that's not a thing biker math was prone to discoloration but it usually would turn shades of yellow these shows explanation about the purity of Walt's meth turning it blue bogus pure meth would be white or clear crystal number 101 life imitates art though the popularity of Breaking Bad changed the real world meth game law enforcement officials started finding blue meth likely as a marketing tactic used by Meth dealers in the wake of Breaking Bad number 102 as for the meth itself on the show it's just rock candy even when you see characters smoking it they're not inhaling Number 103 specifically the rock candy is from an albuquerque-based candy store the candy lady all the myth you see on the show was made there number 104. The MythBusters actually tested a number of other yeah science moments from the show largely debunking them remember the infamous scene where Jesse tries to dissolve a body in the bathtub hydrofluoric acid wouldn't burn all the way through the tub through the floor like that number 105 also the classic fulminated Mercury seen intugo's office wouldn't have played out like that the MythBusters determined that Walt would need more fulminated Mercury and would need to throw it much faster to create the explosion seen in the episode number 106. oh and if he had managed to create an explosion of that size he likely wouldn't have been able to renegotiate with tuko everybody in the room would have likely been dead number 107 even on MythBusters Jr they tested out the feasibility of using a giant magnet like in the episode Live Free or Die turns out even a massive magnet can't just pull metal objects across a room and there you have it 107 more reasons than you already had to go back and re-watch Breaking Bad did you enjoy our list what facts do you think we missed let us know in the comments below and while you're there like And subscribe to see more great videos every week and remember frederator loves you
